Japan’s Hayabusa 2 probe just brought an asteroid piece to Earth
The samples are in 'perfect shape' and they could shed new light on the birth of the solar system.
After six years of traveling alone, the Japanese Hayabusa 2 probe sent a capsule back to Earth. The capsule should contain at least 100 milligrams of samples taken from Ryugu — an asteroid located about 186 million miles (300 million kilometers) from Earth. It’s the first time any samples from asteroids have been brought back to Earth.

The spacecraft spent over a year investigating Ryugu, a kilometer-wide potentially dangerous asteroid, taking photos and measurements from as close by as possible — before ultimately snagging some hard rock samples.
It’s not easy to latch onto a quick-moving asteroid. Hayabusa 2 had to fire a small tantalum projectile into the surface, collecting the cloud of surface debris with a sampling horn, and returning to its holding position. But this was just the first stage: for the second stage, Hayabusa actually fired a larger copper projectile, exposing pristine material, and landing on the asteroid to take a sample. Then, as the asteroid approached our planet, Hayabusa released the capsule with the samples and used its engine to push it towards Earth. The capsule contained a radio beacon which gave off a signal, allowing researchers to track its location and retrieve it successfully.
“Hayabusa 2 is home,” Dr. Yuichi Tsuda, project manager for the mission, said at a press conference on Sunday morning (GMT) in Sagamihara, Japan.
“We collected the treasure box,” he said, adding: “The capsule collection was perfectly done.”
Satoru Nakazawa, the Hayabusa 2 sub-manager at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa), who was part of the retrieval operation described the search:
“We went there with the helicopter and it was emitting the beacon signal. But at that time, it was still dark, so it was unclear [where it was]. I was very, very nervous.
“We flew over the area [where it landed] many times and I thought maybe that was where it was. Then the Sun rose and we could visually confirm the existence of the capsule. We thought: ‘Wow, we found it!”
“But we had a very jittery, frustrating time until sunrise.”

Geologists already had some idea of Ryugu’s geological but of course, having access to direct samples will offer a much clearer vision — especially as it’s never been done before. But there’s more to this mission than just Ryugu’s own tale, the asteroid hides secrets from the early days of the solar system.
Asteroids are essentially time capsules, going about the solar system for billions of years. Scientists have a decent idea of what they’re made of, but fine measurements have been lacking until now — hence the importance of bringing asteroid samples to Earth. Some researchers believe these asteroids brought water to Earth and made it habitable; this idea will now be investigated in closer detail.

Indeed, to scientists, the asteroid sample from Ryugu really is like a treasure box. As explained by the Verge, asteroids are the earliest pictures of our Solar System. They’ve been around for billions of years, and scientists don’t think they’ve changed much. Some scientists believe that it’s possible that asteroids like Ryugu brought water to Earth thereby making the planet habitable. Asteroid samples could help shed light on this hypothesis and plenty others.
What makes it even more exciting is that Hayabusa 2 managed to grab samples from below the asteroid’s surface — samples that haven’t been struck by sunlight in billions of years and could still hold the original chemistry of billions of years ago.
Researchers aren’t sure yet just how big the treasure box is. It will now be thoroughly investigated, and hopefully, the payload will be at least 100 milligrams, which would be enough to carry out all the desired tests.
Meanwhile, Hayabusa 2 still isn’t retired, it merely made a quick trip to drop the capsule. Now, the shuttle is off to explore another asteroid: 1998KY26, to find out how we can deflect potentially dangerous asteroids.

Case closed or will we still be debating the Bermuda Triangle on the 100th anniversary?
“We should ask ourselves: if we don’t know what caused something, or if something appears entirely mysterious, should we look for the answer in the paranormal.”
Oh, boy. If you want to start a controversy, there’s a good place to start. Shane Satterley of Griffiths University in Queensland opened with that statement in his interview with 9 News about the 75th anniversary of the December 5, 1945, disappearance of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers collectively known as ‘Flight 19’ which took off from a Naval Air Station in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on a three-hour exercise (hum ‘Gilligan’s Island’ theme here) following an ironically triangular flight plan. The mission was led by Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor, an experienced pilot and WWII veteran.
“Both my compasses are out and I’m trying to find Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I’m over land, but it’s broken. I’m sure I’m in the Keys, but I don’t know how far down.”
Based on previous reports, the planes were not over land but still far out to sea. Non-mission pilots who picked up Taylor’s and other pilots’ broadcasts said later that he sounded confused and anxious. A PBM Mariner flying boat from a Ft. Lauderdale air station was sent to find them but vanished off of radar 20 minutes later and neither the plane nor the 13 crew members were ever found. Search parties of over 300 boats combed the Atlantic east of Florida but found no remains of Flight 19 either. The official government explanation said the disappearance was “cause unknown” and it became known as the Lost Patrol.
“However, when we take the time to learn more about these events and not jump to conclusions, they start to look much more ordinary.”
In the interview and an earlier article in The Conversation, Satterley lays out the critical thinking process that led him to an ordinary cause for the disappearances. On the disappearance of the search plane, Satterley points out that these were nicknamed “flying gas tanks” for their tendency to go down in flames, and that is what a passing merchant ship witnessed, along with the resulting oil slick. On the other hand, TBM Avengers were known to sink about 45 seconds after a water landing – which resulted in an ocean bottom landing that made finding them nearly impossible.
Then there was the coverup.
“Beyond the reported drinking, other rumors have surfaced about Taylor’s behavior that day. One story holds that he was anxious to get home from the mission to go on a hot date, possibly with Jinx Falkenberg, a well-known actress of the day. Another rumor was that he had recently broken up with a girlfriend. He received a letter that same day with some kind of disturbing news.”
Besides the possibility that Taylor made a mistake and may have panicked, there were rumors of his drinking problems and women problems. All of this upset Katherine Taylor, his mother. Upset that her son was being blamed by both the Navy and the media (some things never change), she petitioned the Navy, which capitulated a year after its initial report and changed the reason for the disappearance to “for causes unknown.” In a minor defense, Satterley points out that the other planes had inexperienced trainee crews who were little help in flying by instruments in that day’s bad weather.
“But if 1000 aircraft fly through the Bermuda Triangle and we can explain what happened to 990 of them, should we say the other 10 were supernatural cases? I don’t think we should. All we can say is we don’t know what happened for sure – and we should try to learn more.”
Is the Bermuda Triangle supernatural or natural to logical thinkers like Shane Satterley but not to those with super imaginations? Can the same be said of other paranormal phenomena?
For now, on the 75th anniversary of the disappearance of Flight 19 in the Bermuda Triangle, Shane Satterley has opened a triangular can of worms.
Just when you thought the basketball-with-protrusions coronavirus would be the symbol of 2020, a new candidate come streaking in from parts unknown (maybe) to make a late bid for 2020 meme supremacy. We’re talking, of course, about the monolith. They started in Utah, spread to Romania and California, disappeared both mysteriously and nefariously, and ended up being claimed by an artist who has them for sale. That should have been the end of the mania … right? Ha! You forgot that this is 2020 – killing the monoliths has become as difficult and controversial as killing the coronavirus. Before that artist could start filling orders, a new supplier undercut him, a monolith appeared in the sky over Idaho, more appeared on the ground in the Netherlands, Pittsburg and on the Isle of Wight — and then came the ultimate (so far) … a golden monolith was found in Columbia! Can this be topped? Somewhere, a monolith said, “Hold my beer and watch this!”
“We went down the steps and to the right about 100 yards in front us we saw this big reflection of the sun. I knew about all the monolith stories recently, so I recognised it straight away.”
You can’t miss the monolith on the Isle of Wight’s Compton Beach, according to dogwalker Tom Dunford, who found it on December 6. It differs from earlier monoliths because it has a pointy top – from the planet of the Coneheads perhaps? This one is also extremely reflective rather than a brush metallic surface – so the aliens can collect our fingerprints? Of course, it may not be aliens – just another copycat. However, don’t tell that to the hikers in Friesland near the Kiekenberg nature reserve in the Netherlands. On the same day, they found a mini-monolith next to a frozen pond with no telltale human footprints in the frost around it. Levitating aliens?
Baby golden monoliths?
“All of a sudden this rectangle showed up. It was only in the sky for a couple of seconds. It wasn’t there, then it was, and as quickly as it appeared, it was gone again. That quick!”
Speaking of levitation, Jeff Jacobs, was driving in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on December 4 when he saw a dark monolith-shaped object in the sky. Luckily, he was quick with the smartphone and snapped a picture before it disappeared. The aliens leaving in their monolith spaceship to leave more homing beacons? No one seems to have an explanation for the monolith-in-the-sky, but one on the ground in front of Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop in Pittsburgh has a logical explanation – the owner ordered it built out of plywood and sheet metal to attract customers. Finally – an honest non-alien obelisk owner.
“I will hand craft and ship to you a 10 foot tall extruded triangle 3 feet on each side, made of 7 gauge 304 stainless steel, and includes 7 foot attachable ground mounting rods with 1/2 inch toggles, these can be used by the installer to mount the sculpture in firm soil, solid rock, concrete or suspended in concrete. Properly installed it will be very sturdy, small arms bullet proof, and extremely difficult to remove.”
If you’re not handy with tools and you don’t have $45,000 to buy one from The Most Famous Artist, you can get a bullet-proof monolith on Etsy for only $10,000. That’s not much more than a 12-foot live Christmas tree these days … and it’s bulletproof! However, even that can’t compete with the greatest monolith so far.
“This Saturday, social networks in Colombia began to fill with photos and videos of what would be the strange appearance of a golden monolith in the municipality of Chía, located a few kilometers from Bogotá. It is unknown who located it there, and the only thing that is known is that it would have been found by workers in the morning.”
The tweets accompanying the Mystery Planet’s article on Colombia’s golden monolith hint that they think it’s a marketing ploy – and that seems to be as good of a guess at any right now. One thing is for certain – it’s not over, especially when there’s money to be made. And it’s a great distraction from the rest of 2020.

An Israeli space official has claimed that aliens are real and secretly in contact with America and Israel - but are keeping their existence quiet because humanity 'isn't ready'.
Haim Eshed - who was head of Israel's space security programme for nearly 30 years and is a retired general - described a so-called 'Galactic Federation' which supposedly runs an underground Mars base in a secret pact with Washington.
But the aliens had to intervene to stop Donald Trump when he appeared 'on the verge' of blurting out their secrets, he told Israeli paper Yediot Aharonot.
And the 87-year-old Eshed says the aliens will not come into the open until humanity can 'evolve and reach a stage where we will... understand what space and spaceships are'.
Eshed did not say how long the aliens have been hiding in the shadows, but said some of the supposed contact had taken place during Trump's presidency.
Speaking of an 'agreement' between the US government and the alien visitors, Eshed said the extraterrestrials wanted to work with American agents to study 'the fabric of the universe'.
'The aliens have asked not to announce that they are here [because] humanity is not ready yet,' Eshed told the Hebrew-language newspaper Yedioth Aharonoth, according to Jewish Press.
'Trump was on the verge of revealing [alien existence], but the aliens in the Galactic Federation are saying, 'Wait, let people calm down first'.
'They don't want to start mass hysteria. They want to first make us sane and understanding.'
Until that point, he said, aliens have secured an agreement to keep their movements secret.
'They have been waiting for humanity to evolve and reach a stage where we will generally understand what space and spaceships are,' said Eshed.
'There's an agreement between the US government and the aliens. They signed a contract with us to do experiments here. They, too, are researching and trying to understand the whole fabric of the universe, and they want us as helpers.'
'There's an underground base in the depths of Mars, where their representatives are, and also our American astronauts,' Eshed is reported to have said.
The former space official claimed he had come forward now in the unlikely hope that his revelations would be accepted as true.
'If I had come up with what I'm saying today five years ago, I would have been hospitalised,' he told the Israeli paper. 'Every place that I went to in academia with this, they said: The guy has lost his mind.
'I have nothing to lose. I've received my degrees and awards; I am respected in universities abroad, where the trend is also changing.'

The professor has even put his thoughts into a book in which he describes how aliens have prevented nuclear disasters on Earth, according to the Jerusalem Post.
The book is called The Universe Beyond the Horizon: Conversations with Professor Haim Eshed.
As head of the Israeli defence ministry's space directorate, Eshed helped launch spy satellites which he said would help provide high-quality surveillance of Iran.
When he retired in 2011, he was even described in Israeli media as 'the father of Israel's satellite programme'.
But after leaving his role at the defence ministry, he is said to have 'turned to what really interested him - aliens'.
In the new book he discusses UFOs and 'various theories about their nature, purpose and origin, which in his opinion is probably not from Earth,' according to a blurb.
Eshed is described a researcher who 'believes that the human race is not alone in the universe, and that it must fit into the harmony of the great plan'.
Israel's space agency hinted at a future moon mission on Monday by publishing a short clip entitled 'Back to the Moon' with the caption 'Ready to get excited again?'.
The country's first attempt at a lunar landing ended in failure when a privately-funded robotic craft crashed on its final descent last April.
Only the US, China and the former Soviet Union have succeeded in carrying out a controlled landing on the moon.
NASA has an official target of returning humans to the moon by 2024, but the development of a next-generation rocket has been held up by the pandemic.
The US and China also have Mars in their sights, but the dream of landing humans on the red planet is still some way off - despite Eshed's claims of an underground base.
Beijing's unmanned Tianwen-1 rover is due to arrive in the red planet's orbit in February 2021 after taking off in July.
NASA has its own Mars rover on the way, Perseverance, and is working on systems that could support human life on the 34million-mile trip to Mars.
Trump, whether secretly in league with aliens or not, unveiled America's new Space Force last year, the first new military service in the US for more than 70 years.
The Pentagon said in August this year that it was setting up a new task force under the US Navy to investigate UFO sightings.
In April, US defence chiefs released three videos taken by Navy pilots showing mid-air encounters with unexplained objects.
The grainy black and white footage had previously been leaked and the Navy had acknowledged they were genuine videos.
One of the videos was shot in November 2004 and the other two in January 2015.

Soaring over the barren, featureless desert of Utah's aptly named Red Rock Country, the helicopter crew could not believe its eyes.
A tedious routine flight counting bighorn sheep in one of America's emptiest regions had suddenly taken a dramatic turn, one that would immediately capture the world's imagination — and fuel wild conspiracy theories.
In this rugged, canyon-carved, sun-baked corner, an otherworldly, 10ft 'monolith' was glinting in the harsh desert light. Three-sided, metallic and as immovable as the menhirs of Stonehenge, it seemed somehow both to have been there for ever and to be a kind of message or sign — but it gave no clue as to its origins.

Helicopter pilot Bret Hutchings described how a biologist on the flight with him spotted the object. 'He was like, 'Whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!' said Hutchings. ''There's this thing back there — we've got to go look at it!' I have to admit, that's been about the strangest thing I've come across out there in all the years of flying.'
A bewildered spokesman for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources euphemistically said the monolith — which are usually a single stone or rock — was an 'anomaly' after it appeared on November 18, adding: 'It's a tough place to get to by vehicle and on foot.'
So who — or what — could possibly have planted it? The internet was instantly aflame with theories. It was a prop left over from films including Indiana Jones, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, all of which were made in the area. It was, others insisted, a satellite beacon, a 'resonance deflector' — or maybe just 'an eyesore'.
But perhaps the most common suggestion was that the monolith was placed there by an alien species of vastly superior intelligence.
After all, it resembled nothing so much as the huge black object that mysteriously appears in the desert in the epic opening scene of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Fixed into the dusty ground by a higher intelligence, the object appears to teach the 'apes' in that film how to use tools — in turn sparking the arrival of humans.
Then, just as strangely as it arrived, the Utah monolith vanished, nine days after it had first baffled the globe. And from there, the mystery only deepened further.
Within days, similar objects began popping up all over the world. A near identical monolith appeared on a hillside in Romania. Internet users were quick to point out that the metallic, triangular object had appeared close to an ancient archaeological landmark, the Petrodava Fortress, built by the ancient Dacian people about 2,000 years ago.
Could this be significant, many wondered. Were aliens trying to send a message? Or were pranksters merely copying the Utah phenomenon that fascinated the planet? Then the monoliths began proliferating with extraordinary profusion. One 'landed' at the top of a mountain trail in California. It too vanished.
Another turned up in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennyslvania, outside a sweet shop. Perhaps the extra-terrestrials were fond of Hershey's chocolate, some quipped.
At the end of last week, an especially beautiful monolith appeared in the Joshua Tree National Park of southern California. Others appeared in Colombia and the Netherlands.

New on the block: Another monolith appeared on a hilltop near the city of Atascadero in California last week, days after others had mysteriously appeared then vanished
Finally — closest to home — in the early hours of Sunday morning, a gleaming, three-sided monolith 'landed' out of nowhere at genteel Compton Bay, on the south-west coast of the Isle of Wight.
Dog walkers were awed by the sight of the 8 ft object standing rigidly straight, reflecting the winter light that sparkled on the sea. Resident Alexia Fishwick said she was 'dumbstruck' when she spotted it during a beach walk, saying the monolith was 'really quite magical'.
Once again, it was in a hard-to-reach place, fixed into the sand below a sheer cliff, accessible only by a narrow footpath. Former Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank, who lives on the island, says: 'I'm not sure if it's aliens, a Coldplay PR stunt or a local mirror dealer drumming up trade, but it got us all down the beach anyway.'
Tory MP Bob Seely was more measured, saying: 'It's fascinating that this sculpture has popped up.'
Sculpture? Surely not, many insist. It must be far, far more than that.
A spokesman for Isle of Wight Council claimed the beach at Compton Bay is owned and managed by the Crown Estate — although the National Trust disputes this, insisting it owns the site.
The Trust says the monolith had appeared without permission — how infuriating that the aliens failed to follow proper planning rules — and insists: 'We need to monitor over the next few days to ensure the beach remains safe and does not become overcrowded.' The organisation also conducted a full study of the object, concluding that it 'seems secure on a wooden plinth and is made from mirrored sections of plastic or Perspex material'.

Over in America, suspicion has fallen upon an anonymous collective called The Most Famous Artist, based in Sante Fe, New Mexico. They quickly took credit for the monoliths in Utah and California and, while they were about it, showed some entrepreneurial flair by posting an image of the Utah creation — with a £34,000 price tag attached.
Whatever the truth of the monoliths' origins, it's clear there hasn't been anything like them since crop circles began appearing in 1976. Over the next two decades these phenomena were all the rage. Many seem to disappear almost as fast as they arrive. One at the top of the Californian hiking trail came a cropper when a group of Trump supporters chanting 'Christ is King' and 'America First' came across it on a hike, took a dim view and demolished it, though it soon reappeared.
But as with those perplexing circles, the beauty of the monoliths seems to be that you can believe whatever you want about their origins. Go all galactic, if you wish, and convince yourself that they have appeared as an urgent — if rather opaque — message from aliens. Or take the view that people with too much time on their hands are planting a few bits of shiny metal and revelling in the subsequent speculation.
As Matty Mo, founder of The Most Famous Artist collective, said when he heard about the Isle of Wight's version: 'The monolith is out of my control at this point. Godspeed to all the aliens working hard around the globe to propagate the myth.'

Former Israeli space security chief says aliens exist, humanity not ready
This "Galactic Federation" has supposedly been in contact with Israel and the US for years, but are keeping themselves a secret to prevent hysteria until humanity is ready.

According to retired Israeli general and current professor Haim Eshed, the answer is yes, but this has been kept a secret because "humanity isn't ready."
Speaking in an interview toYediot Aharonot, Eshed – who served as the head of Israel's space security program for nearly 30 years and is a three-time recipient of the Israel Security Award – explained that Israel and the US have both been dealing with aliens for years.
And this by no means refers to immigrants, with Eshed clarifying the existence of a "Galactic Federation."
The 87-year-old former space security chief gave further descriptions about exactly what sort of agreements have been made between the aliens and the US, which ostensibly have been made because they wish to research and understand "the fabric of the universe." This cooperation includes a secret underground base on Mars, where there are American and alien representatives.
If true, this would coincide with US President Donald Trump's creation of the Space Force as the fifth branch of the US armed forces, though it is unclear how long this sort of relationship, if any, has been going on between the US and its reported extraterrestrial allies.
But Eshed insists that Trump is aware of them, and that he was "on the verge" of disclosing their existence. However, the Galactic Federation reportedly stopped him from doing so, saying they wished to prevent mass hysteria since they felt humanity needed to "evolve and reach a stage where we will... understand what space and spaceships are,"Yediot Aharonotreported.
As for why he's chosen to reveal this information now, Eshed explained that the timing was simply due to how much the academic landscape has changed, and how respected he is in academia.
"If I had come up with what I’m saying today five years ago, I would have been hospitalized," he explained toYediot.
He added that "today, they’re already talking differently. I have nothing to lose. I’ve received my degrees and awards; I am respected in universities abroad, where the trend is also changing."
Eshed provided more information in his newest book,The Universe Beyond the Horizon – conversations with Professor Haim Eshed, along with other details such as how aliens have prevented nuclear apocalypses and "when we can jump in and visit the Men in Black." The book is available now for NIS 98.
While it is unclear if any evidence exists that could support Eshed's claims, they did come just ahead of arecent announcement by SpaceIL, the group behind Israel's failed attempt to land a spacecraft on the moon in 2019.
Uploaded to social media with the text "Ready to get excited again?," the announcement contained a 15-second video of the moon with text saying "Back to the Moon," followed by the date of December 9, 2020.
It is likely that this is a follow up to the Beresheet spacecraft, which crashed after engineers lost contact with it just minutes before it was due to land. However, the follow up project, titled Beresheet 2, is expected to take three years to be ready.

Paul Hellyer UFO Disclosure, Nearby Exoplanet Confirmed.
Paul Hellyer, a former Canadian defense minister, had first aired his views and opinions about aliens. He had claimed back then that aliens have not only visited our planet but they also live among us. That is, aliens live right here on earth and they are right here right now. In January 2014, Paul Hellyer gave an interview to Russian TV and he made certain disclosures. Paul Hellyer served as a defense minister in Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson’s government from 1963 to 1967.
Ninety year old Hellyer claimed that there are many species of aliens and that some of those species have been visiting our planet for thousands of years. Some of these aliens are from other galaxies and star systems but a few of those species do live in Venus, Mars and on the moons of Saturn. Hellyer states, that most of these alien species are not a threat to humans. To the contrary, most alien species are benevolent and intend to help mankind. However, the species have decided not to intervene in our ways of living or to assist us in any way unless we desire so and ask for their help and collaboration.
Some species, Hellyer says, are however a threat and may have ulterior motives. The entire interview had made some noise in the press and media. The transcripts have been published by many news organizations and the episode has been dubbed as Paul Hellyer UFO Disclosure.
Former Defense Minister of Canada Claims Extraterrestrials are on Earth
Paul Hellyer was Canadian minister of Defense in 1960s, ruling over the country’s armed forces during the time of the Cold War – and when he retired he publicly stated that we are not alone in the universe, and some guests from outer space actually live here, on planet Earth.
Sophie Shevardnadze: Our guest today is the Honorable Paul Hellyer, former minister of Defense of Canada, and he believes that life forms from space are present on Earth. It’s great to have you on our show. Why do you say that UFOs are as real as airplanes flying over our heads?
Paul Hellyer states: “Because I know that they are here, as a matter of fact, they’ve been visiting our planet for thousands of years and one of the cases that would interest you most if you give me two or three minutes to answer is that during the Cold War, 1961, there were about 50 UFOs in formation flying southwest from Russia across Europe, and Supreme Allied Command was very concerned and about ready to press the “Panic” button when they turned around and went back over the North Pole.
They decided to do an investigation and they investigated for 3 years and they decided that, with absolute certainty, four species – at least – had been visiting this planet for thousands of years. We have a long history of UFOs and of course there has been a lot more activity in the last few decades, since we invented the atomic bomb and they are very concerned about that and the fact that we might use it again, and because the Cosmos is a unity and it affects not just us but other people in the Cosmos, they are very much afraid that we might be stupid enough to start using atomic weapons again, and this would be very bad for us and for them as well.”
All of Paul’s claims cannot be rejected outright since there is always a possibility that some alien species may look like us and might be living with us on our planet, undetected for many years. I had a long talk with Paul who said, “Hw contacted a series of General officers he trusted and the confirmed what each had told him.” Additionally, he saw some of the aliens walking around Las Vegas.
It is entirely plausible that we ourselves did not originate on this planet which doesn’t rule out the theory of multiple species being of similar nature and also appearance, as well as biological composition. The often claim to be our ancestors and we are not from apes or chimps.
He goes on to say that aliens are miffed or disappointed with us because we don’t have the best ways of living. We don’t feed the poor, make atomic bombs and keep fighting with one another; we destroy forests and don’t evolve and use our planet as we should. All these reasons, although meaningful, appear to be of an environmentalist and a concerned citizen of the planet than that of an alien expert. They indicate they may be coming here in large numbers and want to preserve the planet environmentally/

Dr. Lachezar Filipov, deputy director of the Space Research Institute in November of 2009, said: “Aliens are currently all around us and are watching us all the time; they are not hostile towards us, rather, they want to help us but we have not grown enough in order to establish direct contact with them. Colony Earth and Watson Computer
If UFOs can reach us from other planets, or dimensions or from under the sea their technology must be far in advance of our own. Not generally realized is how advanced our own Earth computers are becoming. Google for example is experiencing with computers that drive cars, there are more than 2000 robots fighting in Afghanistan alongside our troops, the Jeopardy game show was played with Watson an IBM computer this week against two former human champions. It is logical to assume the aliens also use advanced computers, and it is quite likely many of the aliens themselves are advanced robot computers, probably a combination of biological alien and computer.
It is predicted Earth computers will surpass human intelligence in the year 2023 and Watson is a terrific start. Computers are operating faster at an increasing rate and probably by 2035; computers will greatly transform our human civilization. The world as we know it may greatly change as society may decide to trust computers that have been programmed with ethical decisions to control governments, to judge court cases, drive cars and planes, and even clean our homes. We can logically assume alien computers greatly exceed human intelligence and may be a reason they choose to remain comparatively hidden and anonymous. Abductees often report the aliens seem robot like and seldom talk or express emotions. Only a few aliens would be needed to control a vast array of robotic aliens collecting data, DNA, energy, foodstuffs and minerals from our planet. There is evidence of mining under the oceans.
Seven billion people now populate the Earth and resources and food are finite. Another twenty years the population will increase to eight billion people and we may have to colonize other planets to manage the growing population. The aliens may be here exploring to manage and upgrade their population for similar reasons.
Sir Francis Crick, 1962, a discoverer of DNA won the Nobel Prize for physiology/medicine, perhaps, said it best:
“Life did not evolve first on Earth; a highly advanced civilization became threatened so they devised a way to pass on their existence. They genetically-modified their DNA and sent it out from their planet on bacteria or meteorites with the hope that it would collide with another planet. It did, and that’s why we’re here. The DNA molecule is the most efficient information storage system in the entire universe. The immensity of complex, coded and precisely sequenced information is absolutely staggering. The DNA evidence speaks of an intelligent, information-bearing design.
Complex DNA coding is necessary for even the hypothetical first ‘so-called’ simple cell(s). Our DNA was encoded with messages from that other civilization. They programmed the molecules so that when we reached a certain level of intelligence, we would be able to access their information, and they could therefore “teach” us about ourselves, and how to progress. For life to form by chance is mathematically virtually impossible.” The UFOs in our skies appear to be updating, probing, investigating, and likely improving DNA. Kepler Locates 2800 planets outside our Solar System
NASA’s scientists announced that the Kepler space telescope
– an orbiting NASA telescope — spotted 2800 exoplanet candidates including almost a 100 that orbit their host stars in the so-called habitable zone, a region where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface. After revealing more than 2,800 confirmed planets outside our solar system, the data collected by the Kepler space telescope continues to yield important new discoveries about our place in the universe. Though Kepler’s field of view covered only 0.25% of the sky, the area that would be covered by your hand if you held it up at arm’s length towards the sky, its data has allowed scientists to extrapolate what the mission’s data means for the rest of the galaxy. That work continues with TESS, NASA’s current planet hunting telescope. There are planets where life could thrive.
Kepler has helped turn science fiction into today’s reality,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine . “These discoveries underscore the importance of NASA’s science missions, which consistently increase understanding of our place in the cosmos.”

In just a year of peering out at a small slice of the galaxy, the Kepler telescope has discovered 12800 planets outside our solar system. “Kepler has discovered its first Earth-size planet candidates and its first candidates in the habitable zone. Five of the potential planets are near Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of smaller, cooler stars than our Sun.

Astronomers have discovered the first Earth-size planet orbiting a star in the “habitable zone” — the range of distance from a star where liquid water might pool on the surface of an orbiting planet. The discovery of Kepler-186f confirms that planets the size of Earth exists in the habitable zone of stars other than our sun.

Since astronomers confirmed the presence of planets beyond our solar system, called explants, humanity has wondered how many could harbor life. Now, we’re one step closer to finding an answer. According to new research using data from NASA’s retired planet-hunting mission, the Kepler space telescope, about half the stars similar in temperature to our Sun could have a rocky planet capable of supporting liquid water on its surface.
Our galaxy holds at least an estimated 300 million of these potentially habitable worlds, based on even the most conservative interpretation of the results in a study to be published in The Astronomical Journal. Some of these exoplanets could even be our interstellar neighbors, with at least four potentially within 30 light-years of our Sun and the closest likely to be at most about 20 light-years from us. These are the minimum numbers of such planets based on the most conservative estimate that 7% of Sun-like stars host such worlds. However, at the average expected rate of 50%, there could be many more.
This research helps us understand the potential for these planets to have the elements to support life. This is an essential part of astrobiology, the study of life’s origins, and future in our universe.
The study is authored by NASA scientists who worked on the Kepler mission alongside collaborators from around the world. NASA retired the space telescope in 2018 after it ran out of fuel. Nine years of the telescope’s observations revealed that there are billions of planets in our galaxy – more planets than stars.
“Kepler already told us there were billions of planets, but now we know a good chunk of those planets might be rocky and habitable,” said the lead author Steve Bryson, a researcher at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. “Though this result is far from a final value, and water on a planet’s surface is only one of many factors to support life, it’s extremely exciting that we calculated these worlds are this common with such high confidence and precision.”
For the purposes of calculating this occurrence rate, the team looked at exoplanets between a radius of 0.5 and 1.5 times that of Earth’s, narrowing in on planets that are most likely rocky. They also focused on stars similar to our Sun in age and temperature, plus or minus up to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit.
That’s a wide range of different stars, each with its own particular properties impacting whether the rocky planets in its orbit are capable of supporting liquid water. These complexities are partly why it is so difficult to calculate how many potentially habitable planets are out there, especially when even our most powerful telescopes can just barely detect these small planets.
Asteroid 2011-CA7 Apophis Could Hit Earth in 2036
“On Wednesday afternoon, 2011-CA7, an asteroid the size of a Volkswagen, will shoot past the Earth so close that it will be lower than some satellites. The probability of impact is microscopic. If the orbital elements of the asteroid are a tiny bit off, though, and it does hit us, the rock is expected to break apart high in the atmosphere with the pieces harmlessly burning up.
If the rock manages to remain intact down into the lower atmosphere, and then breaks apart, it could flash off all at once like the rock that blew down an estimated 80 million trees in the Tunguska, Siberia forest in

The Earth has been hit thousands of times in the past by large asteroids. It is believed the dinosaurs met their demise when one hit what became the Gulf of Mexico. Asteroid Apophis, will certainly come close as it passes by in 2029 and 2036. But how close? Estimates range from a near-miss at 18,000 miles to a bull’s-eye hit. The energy available from a 300 meter 90 stories tall, 25 million ton chunk of flying rock is like the dinosaur ending event.
Professor Lenoid Sokolov of the St. Petersburg State University is the first to suggest that Apophis may pass through just the exact-right spot in space, called a gravitational keyhole, to perturb the 2029 pass enough to cause the 2036 pass to hit Earth. Thanks to Tom Carol and NASA.
AN ASTEROID the size of a car has zipped past Earth. Scientists say is the closest flyby on record. NASA has admitted it didn’t see the space rock coming ahead of a near-miss on Sunday that took it within 1,830 miles (2,950km) of our planet.
That’s more than 130 times closer to Earth than the Moon (230,000 miles), or less than the distance between Los Angeles and New York City (2,400 miles).
“The asteroid approached undetected from the direction of the Sun,” Nasa’s Dr Paul Chodas told Business Insider. “We didn’t see it coming.”
The Palomar Observatory in California first detected the rock, now known as 2020 QG, six hours after it flew over the southern Indian Ocean at 5:08am BST (12:08am ET) on August 16.
At between 6 feet (2m) and 18 feet (5.5m) wide – a little larger than the average sedan – the object posed no threat to Earth.
Peru Nazca Lines UFO and Andes Mountain Runway Shaved
According to the video on YouTube, two medical professionals took an early morning flight in a Cessna plane to observe the Nazca Lines in Peru, near the foothills of the Andes on New Year’s Day. In the YouTube video, at 3’28, an aircraft is flying through rain clouds, when suddenly a UFO appears in a hole in the clouds at left, about 20 to 30 feet from the plane and seemingly on a collision course. The grey disk rapidly changes course and disappears back into the clouds, all within the space of a couple of seconds. Subsequent slow footage and still frame analysis of the incident clearly shows a flying saucer-shaped object. Is it possible the UFO was an alien craft navigating above the mysterious Nazca Lines?
Top of Mountain Flattened to Build Airport in Ancient times
Archeologists and anthropologists have studied the ancient Nazca culture and the complex to try to determine the purpose of the lines and figures. One theory is that the Nazca people created them to be seen by their gods in the sky. They can actually be seen from space and at least one Andes Mountain has been shaved off to allow for landings. Thousands of tons of earth and stone had to removed to create an apparent landing zone.
Eric Von Däniken maintains that the Nazca lines are runways of an ancient airfield that was used by extraterrestrials. My theory is that the various animals and birds point to ancient cities used be the ancients. From the air the huge drawings on the ground become a map of the ancient world.

Martha’s Vineyard— Seven unknown airborne objects appeared in the filming of the first Jaws movie in 1975. In this clip four unknown flying objects appeared. In the first scene a bright object shows up moving from right to left low behind the boat. Later a light is seen in front of the cabin as Roy Schneider moves forward.

Here is a picture of my Roswell display which I finally completed this past weekend. The keystone of the display is a piece of wood floor board from one of the old hospital annex buildings from the time of the historic UFO event. Also a signed photograph of Brig. Gen. The Hopi call this imminent condition–and that of society today–“Koyaanisqatsi”, which means “world out of balance…a state of life that calls for another way.” Hopi tell of two water serpents coiling the Earth, from North Pole to the South Pole. Each serpent has a warrior twin sitting on the serpent’s head and tail. These warrior twins/gods relay messages of our conduct and behavior toward one another to the serpents who, when they move causes the Earth to move. These Earth movements—earthquakes, if you will, are to warn us that we must stop our bad behavior and live peaceably amongst ourselves. Legend says when we fail to heed the warning, these warrior gods will let go of the serpents and we will all perish in the ensuing cataclysm.
Editor’s Note: The geographic north pole at various times as been in the Atlantic Ocean near Greenland, in the Pacific Ocean and Northern Canada. It appears the tectonic plates slip to various points on Earth.

I watched about a dozen people give testimony to fraud in Phoenix and Detroit during the election that appeared both reasonable and honest people. I worked in the Polls a dozen times and it’s easy to steal thousands of votes. The software in the machines has for example A-Biden and B- Trump so with your Flash Drive you reverse the order now B-Biden so all Trump votes go to Biden. Why are we using machines easily hacked? In the ten key Democratic cities the poll workers were trained to keep Republican poll watchers out completely or more than six feet away where they could not see the fraud. Biden Votes were put in the counting machines dozens of times at fifty to a hundred at a time. Frankly I do not trust politicians, judges or lawyers so I listen to the typical guy who worked in the e polls. Allegedly there are thousands of Affidavits from typical unpaid poll workers who claim thousands of votes were stolen. For Example in Detroit the ballots have numbers on them, and ballots are coming in from all over the state, yet the alleged mailed in ballots were in numerical order which is impossibility without fraud.
At Detroit late in the evening two truck loaded with Biden ballots were unloaded and suddenly Trumps hundred thousand lead was over turned.

California Object
Riverside– On December 4, 2020, at1830, observed three V shaped objects travelling roughly North to South. Objects appeared relatively large, possibly a few thousand feet in altitude. Objects would stagger left to right as they travelled south, and would bank with those turns. They would then appear to hover, and then the lights they emitted extinguished. In one case, e lights shut off, I could barely make out a much smaller object, which turned east and disappeared quickly. It did not appear to be travelling very fast. The lights emitted from the V shapes were quite strong, about f 3000 degrees Kelvin. The rest of the “wings” were also illuminated with slightly dimmer lights. The attached image is from a sighting in Indiana which very closely resembles what I saw.

Port Charlotte — On November 30, 2020, I was outside on my patio with my dogs when one of them looked up. When I looked up I was looking at the bottom of a gigantic black triangular UFO. Then I thought I was getting dizzy as the whole sky started moving and I realized what was happening. I just looked for about 30 seconds then ran in the house and grabbed my phone. It was going over the neighbor’s house when I took the pictures. Then the lights all faded and flickered and went black

New York Changeling Huge Light
New York City – On November 25, 2020, out walking my dog around 8:30pm.I looked up and noticed a bright light behind some clouds. Initially thought this light was the moon and clouds were just passing over it. The light was blue and that was what was confusing to me (determined it wasn’t the moon at this time). I stopped and then saw that the light was changing colors. This light was stationary and was visible for over 1/2 hour. The light was not close to any tall buildings or bridges but was just on its own pulsating a rainbow of colors silently. Was high up in the sky which made me think it was definitely something in the atmosphere.
Ohio Objects’
Powell – On November 12, 2020, at approx. 8:02 PM, five objects were observed to be hovering in the sky. Bottom left object moves slowly towards the left and one flash of light is seen about 11 seconds in. Objects appear to change shape or move in place. Size and distance is unknown.
Oregon Lights
Preiville –On November 27, 2020, woman was taking her dog out and noticed three orange lights in triangular formation. Two of the lights were stacked vertically and the third was to the left. The lights stayed in the same formation and moved away from the witness to the west. The lights emitted no sound. The lights were only seen for 30 seconds to one minute and the witness didn’t believe that the lights were Chinese lanterns. Another orange later appeared for about the same duration. A photo was taken of the three lights and of the one light. The photo of the three lights is included in this report. The lights were much bigger than stars and skies were clear at the time of the sighting.
Note: The photo clearly shows the three orange lights. The lights must have been very bright and large to show up that well in a nighttime photo.
Nashville – On November 22, 2020, saw something through my window that moved through the sky in a way that made me take another look. When I couldn’t figure out what it was, I began filming with my phone. It was a ring shaped object flying over the park behind my house. I would guess based on the distance that it was about 3 feet in diameter. My first guess was that it was a drone, but it was hollow in the middle. After researching, I could not find a single identifiable flying object of that shape or size.

Wytheville– On July 28, 2020, checked my hunting cam cards every 6 months. This camera was point toward my house and land for security purposes. I have not exterior lights, no street lights, area is very rural and object appears over my forest land which is 300 plus acres of nothing but trees no houses. Lights pattern appears too curved with a slight outline of an object. Lights also appear to be separated. I have attached two photos on is the original and the other is one I magnified. Former law enforcement not a nut job or fake it’s the photo that was on my trail cam SD card.

D.C. – On December 5 2020, my camera turned off for no reason what so ever then the craft vanished into thin air.

Bugarach, Occitani– On October 15, 2020, I saw nothing, heard nothing in particular while filming with my camera. It was while watching in slow motion (around 31 frames per second) that I could see unusual things, such as metallic objects moving at insane speeds, among insects and birds. Warsaw – I took this picture on the 9th of June, 2019, while making a picture of a tree with butterflies. The sky was clear and while making a photo I didn’t see anything on it looking like a plane or something else. After inserting a card into my computer this object showed up.

Essex– On December4, 2020, I was working as a security guard on nights as normal it was dark and overcast I saw some lights underneath the clouds I went outside the gate house and saw a black triangle object with lights on each corner but rotating every six seconds I took a photo and a video on my cell phone then I went back in the gate house and carried on working then about ten minutes later I heard loads of helicopters outside

As you have seen over the last few years, white UFOs are the most common, but the closer you are to them, the more transparent they become. The white is less visible and you notice swirling mother of pearl colors. This one is not an orb, its a UFO with a pilot and all. Yes the ship has AI for functions and monitoring, but the pilot controls the it. Not surprising to see one over Singapore. It's one of the smallest and most powerful countries for its size. The country has tight control over Covid and is very modern compared to many larger countries.

While walking below the MRT tracks between Bukit Gombak MRT stations towards BBDC direction, I had noticed a white speck flying high up in the sky across my field of vision. It disappeared behind the clouds proving its a high flying object, usually with the naked eyes in daylight can spot the wings of most airplanes especially military & commercial planes. This looks like a white drone of some sort flying above the clouds, I suspect the future is already here & maybe this is some sort of drone with human passengers.

You all know I started the UFO watch over ten years ago on the space station live cam. I even organized people to protest NASA taking them down about 5 years ago and we won. But today I want to share with you something strange I caught while watching the live cam last night.
The object is golden in color and shaped unlike anything I have ever seen before. The UFO was not cloaked or invisible, but instead was hiding in the darkness not far from the space station. When the light over the earth began to hit the space station...the light also hit the UFO, causing it to become visible from the darkness below. I have explained that some aliens are extremely advanced and are equally lazy at manual labor...so they grow their ships...not all species but many. Biomechanical ships, living, but made to serve. The shape of this UFO off the bow of the space station makes me think it too...had been grown. This is 100% proof that aliens are watching humanity's activities in space...very closely...about 70 meters away to be exact.

A person was lucky enough to catch a UFO cloaked in a cloud over Indonesia this week. The UFO was creating a cloud around it...which takes on the form of the UFO itself, but much larger. The cloud around it is about 75% larger than the UFO. The raw footage is only 14 seconds long, but really gives us some idea of what it looked like and how much in awe it leaves us all. This is 100% proof that aliens fly low over cities worldwide!

A man in Turkey was looking up at the sky above his home and noticed some white UFOs moving around slowly. He recorded a few 25 seconds of footage of the confusing objects to show his family later, but then decided to share it on Youtube to get others opinions.
The object are cloud orbs. They are bigger than a soft ball, but smaller than a bowling ball. They are alien probes that look white far away, but up close the surface is smooth and slowly swirling colors like that of mother of pearl. (Yes once saw one 2 meters from me so yes...I know first hand.) They hide in clouds, however the video shows the sky is clear and blue, so there are no white clouds for the orbs to hide inside...and the blue makes it easy to see the white small spheres moving about. 100% proof that aliens exist.

Here is a black Bell shaped cylinder UFO hovering over the city of Winterthur, Switzerland last month. It's thiner on its top, giving it a bell shape. It was seen on Sept 2020, but reported at end of Nov. The object is standing upright and moving slowly across the area. What gets me is that compared to the apartments below it...this UFO is huge! It's about the size of a semi truck. The focus of the UFO is equal to that of the apartments below it, so I know its real. The black surface of the UFO is visible because of the light reflecting off it it. So we get some detail...or not...of its curved cylinder skin.
This looks similar to the old Kecksburg, Pennsylvania UFO incident from Dec 1965. The UFO was similar but wider on the bottom like a bell or acorn nut and slimly brown tint to it.

Witness report:
Submitting on behalf of my friend, who’s also a trainee pilot and his partner. Object spotted by his partner first, who thought there’s something burning, then thought its a moon, but excluded that possibility after observing moon on a different spot in the sky. Object hovered for a long time, pulsating slightly. At some point blinked and disappeared. then reappeared again with its twin for a moment (there were two of them at the same time for a brief moment) and just disappeared for good after another 20 min or so of hovering there. Jupiter is sometimes called a ‘failed star’ for good reason. The gas giant is the largest planet in the solar system by a large margin and is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium — just like the sun. But despite the fact it’s 318 times bigger than Earth, Jupiter isn’t massive enough for gravity to trigger nuclear fusion, which would have elevated it to stellar status.

The fifth planet from the sun has an atmosphere composed of about 90% hydrogen and about 10% helium, with trace amounts of other gases. These include water vapor, methane, hydrogen sulfide, neon, oxygen, phosphine, carbon, ethane, sulfur, and ammonia crystals, according to spectral analyses of the planet.
The atmosphere is not uniform with the gases being piled on top of one another, forming multiple layers extending downward, including a layer of supercritical hydrogen (the point where distinct liquid and gas phases do not exist).
These layers aren’t necessarily linked to Jupiter’s famous stripes. These are actually the result of a combination of a fast rotation of the planet and dramatic differences in temperature in various regions. Earth rotates once in 24 hours, whereas Jupiter rotates once in about 9.5 hours. However, the surface of Earth at the equator is rotating at about 1000 miles per hour, while Jupiter’s equatorial cloud-tops are moving nearly 28,000 miles per hour. Jupiter’s equator is also more intensely heated than at the poles. The physics responsible for Jupiter’s stripes is actually quite similar to that responsible for trade winds near the equator and jet streams near the poles on Earth.
But unlike Earth, Jupiter doesn’t have a solid surface, so a visitor traveling through the Jovian atmosphere in a spacecraft would simply plow through like a knife through the mist. However, for practical purposes, scientists consider Jupiter’s surface the geodesic line where the atmospheric pressure is equal to that of Earth at sea level — at this point, gravity is 2.5 times more powerful than on Earth.
However, this hypothetical spacecraft wouldn’t just end up on the other side of the planet if it kept zipping through in a straight line — at some point, it would crash into Jupiter’s core, estimated to be about 35,000 degrees Celsius (63,000 degrees Fahrenheit).
Does Jupiter have a solid core?
Scientists still aren’t sure what this core looks like since the dense and swirling clouds obstruct observations. But there are reasons to believe Jupiter has a dense rocky center enveloped in a layer of metallic hydrogen (a phase of hydrogen in which it behaves like an electrical conductor), with another layer of molecular hydrogen (regular H2, dihydrogen gas) on top.
The presence of a rocky core is also supported by models of planetary formation which show that a rocky core, or at the very least an icy one, would have been necessary at some point in the gas giant’s history.
According to a 1997 study, which performed gravitational measurements, Jupiter’s core could have a mass of 12 to 45 times the mass of planet Earth — that’s 4% to 14% of Jupiter’s total mass.
Another school of thought concerning Jupiter’s core suggests that the gas giant lacks a rocky core. Instead, when the planet formed billions of years ago, a pocket of gas simply collapsed in on itself, creating a more-or-less pure hydrogen-helium world.
But this latter hypothesis has since been dispelled by the Juno mission. Launched in August 2011, the spacecraft named after Jupiter’s wife in Roman mythology has revealed numerous secrets about Jupiter.
By measuring how the spacecraft’s velocity was ramped up or slowed down by the planet’s gravitational field, scientists could deduce how mass is distributed in Jupiter’s depths. Although there’s no way to peer through Jupiter’s swirling dense clouds, this clever method confirmed that Jupiter does indeed have a core, scientists wrote in the journalNature. What’s more, rather than being a compact ball, the analysis showed that the core is more like a fuzzy sphere spread across nearly half of Jupiter’s diameter.
Scientists don’t actually know why Jupiter has such an atypical core, but whatever the explanation may be, it’s telling of how the planet formed. One possible explanation is that early Jupiter was stirred up by the impact with another huge proto-planetary body. Another explanation would be that Jupiter changed orbit and added more planetesimals early in its history.
Nevertheless, this insight showed that we still don’t know much about giant gas planets. Besides overturning assumptions about Jupiter’s core, the Juno mission also showed that the strange clusters of cyclones raging around the planet’s north and south poles are more chaotic than previously thought. Another surprise was Jupiter’s magnetic field, which turned out to be twice as strong than scientists assumed.
As Juno continues its mission exploring Jupiter and its moons, NASA scientists hope to uncover strange new things about Jupiter.

The message is headed for a nearby exoplanet named GJ 273b. GJ 273b is what astronomers call a “Super Earth”. It’s slightly more massive than Earth and is within its star’s habitable zone. GJ 273b is a good candidate for alien life.
This is the first radio message of its kind designed for a direct response at a specific time. GJ 273b lives in another star system 12 light years away.
That means if intelligent life responds we could make first contact in just 24 years.

Het leidde tot een prachtige nieuwe kaart van het heelal, waar bovendien een aantal heel interessante ontdekkingen uit rolt. Meer over ASKAP ASKAP staat voor Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder en is ontwikkeld en beheerd door het Australische nationale wetenschappelijke bureau CSIRO. Het belangrijkste kenmerk van de telescoop is het brede gezichtsveld; zo heeft de telescoop zicht op zo’n zes graden van de hemel, wat overeenkomt met twaalf keer de grootte van de maan. Hierdoor is ASKAP in staat om in verbazingwekkend detail panoramische foto’s van de nachtelijke hemel te maken. Maar de radiotelescoop is nog tot veel grotere dingen in staat. De meest opwindende ontdekking van ASKAP zijn namelijk de nog altijd raadselachtige snelle radioflitsen (FRB’s). Tot voor kort was de precieze locatie van snelle radioflitsen – dus waar ze zich precies aan de nachtelijke hemel bevonden – niet bekend. Maar ASKAP is erin geslaagd om hun precieze locatie te bepalen. Bovendien is de radiotelescoop ingezet in de zoektocht naar buitenaards leven. De telescoop luisterde naar talloze sterren in de hoop op een signaal van een buitenaardse beschaving te stuiten.
Met behulp van de ASKAP-telescoop observeerde de onderzoeksgroep 83 procent van de hemel. Dit resulteerde in een nieuwe hemelkaart die bestaat uit ‘slechts’ 903 verschillende afbeeldingen; aanzienlijk minder dan de vaak tienduizenden afbeeldingen die veel andere grote wereldtelescopen nodig hebben om een soortgelijke kaart te vervaardigen. De nieuwe hemelkaart onthult bovendien miljoenen sterren die allemaal verre sterrenstelsels vertegenwoordigen.
Recordtempo De radiotelescoop liet er overigens geen gras over groeien. Want door vijftien luttele minuten naar de nachtelijke hemel te turen, kan ASKAP een afbeelding vervaardigen waarin 3000 sterrenstelsels pronken. En in slechts 300 uur bracht de radiotelescoop zo’n drie miljoen sterrenstelsels in kaart; een recordtempo. “Van deze drie miljoen sterrenstelsels, zien we nu een miljoen sterrenstelsels voor het eerst,” vertelt onderzoeksleider David McConnell in een interview met Scientias.nl. “Deze nieuw gevonden sterrenstelsels zijn allemaal vrij zwak, vandaar dat ze ook nog niet in eerdere studies aan het licht zijn gebracht.” Met de nieuwe gegevens kunnen astronomen statistische analyses van grote populaties sterrenstelsels uitvoeren, vergelijkbaar met onderzoekers die informatie uit een nationale volkstelling halen. Daarnaast zijn astronomen met name geïnteresseerd in de meest afgelegen stelsels. “Deze kunnen waardevolle informatie opleveren over de jonge jaren van het heelal, toen de eerste sterrenstelsels geboren werden,” aldus McConnell.
Google Maps Dankzij de nieuwe kaart ontwikkelen astronomen eigenlijk een soort Google Maps van de ruimte, waarmee ze door het omvangrijke universum kunnen navigeren. “Net als landkaarten hebben astronomische hemelonderzoeken veel verschillende toepassingen,” legt McConnell uit. “Ze bieden nieuwe inzichten die gebruikt kunnen worden in statistische studies over bijvoorbeeld de populatie en distributie van bepaalde klasse hemellichamen. Maar het kan ook nieuwe informatie verschaffen over een bepaald object dat al bestudeerd wordt. Over het algemeen vullen studies zoals deze, eerdere onderzoeken die gebruik maakten van optisch licht of röntgenstraling aan. Veel astrofysisch onderzoek is gericht op de vorming, ontwikkeling en evolutie van sterrenstelsels. En veel sterrenstelsels – ook die op grote afstanden – hebben actieve centra die goed met radiotelescopen gedetecteerd kunnen worden. Daarom kunnen onderzoeken met radiotelescopen sterrenstelsels aan het licht brengen die anders gemakkelijk over het hoofd zouden worden gezien. Deze kunnen we vervolgens weer in meer detail bestuderen, om te begrijpen hoe sterrenstelsels zich in de loop van de tijd hebben ontwikkeld.”

In totaal genereerde de ASKAP-telescoop een slordige 13,5 exabyte (ofwel 13.500.000.000.000.000.000 bytes in het SI-prefix) aan onbewerkte gegevens. Dit onnoemelijk hoge aantal werd vervolgens met behulp van hardware en software die speciaal op maat zijn gemaakt, verwerkt. De ‘Galaxy’ supercomputer van het Pawsey Supercomputing Centre zette de gegevens om in 2D-radiobeelden met in totaal 70 miljard pixels. De uiteindelijke 903 afbeeldingen en ondersteundende informatie, zijn samen goed voor zo’n 26 terabyte (26.000.000.000.000 bytes) aan gegevens.
Vragen De onderzoekers hopen dat ze dankzij de nieuwe hemelkaart eeuwenoude vragen over het heelal kunnen oplossen. “Deze telling van het heelal zal door astronomen over de hele wereld gebruikt worden om het onbekende te verkennen,” stelt McConnell. “We kunnen alles bestuderen; van stervorming tot hoe sterrenstelsels en hun superzware zwarte gaten evolueren en een wisselwerking met elkaar aangaan.” Het betekent dat mogelijk al binnenkort grote mysteries over het universum ontraadseld kunnen worden.
Bovendien bewijzen de recordbrekende resultaten dat een volledige hemelkaart in slechts weken in plaats van jaren gemaakt kan worden. “Voor het eerst heeft ASKAP met een recordsnelheid een kaart van het heelal vervaardigd in meer detail dan ooit tevoren,” gaat McConnell verder. En dat is veelbelovend. Het onderzoek laat daarom zien dat we klaar zijn om een grote sprong voorwaarts te maken op het gebied van radioastronomie. “We verwachten in toekomstige onderzoeken nog tientallen miljoenen nieuwe sterrenstelsels boven tafel te krijgen,” besluit McConnell.

Wetenschappers stellen de afstand tot het zwarte gat in het hart van ons melkwegstelsel bij, van 27.700 lichtjaar naar 25.800 lichtjaar.
De nieuwe afstandsmeting is gelukkig niet te verklaren doordat onze planeet op het zwarte gat afstormt, maar het resultaat van nieuwe observaties. En die wijzen dus uit dat de afstand tot het hart van onze Melkweg – waarin het zwarte gat Sagittarius A* te vinden is – bijna 2000 lichtjaar kleiner is dan gedacht.
Sneller Daarnaast blijkt uit de observaties dat de aarde ook net ietsje sneller om het hart van de Melkweg heen cirkelt en wel met een snelheid van 227 kilometer per seconde. Eerder werd deze snelheid nog geschat op 220 kilometer per seconde.
VERA De nieuwste schattingen vloeien voort uit een vernieuwd model van onze Melkweg. Dat model is weer gebaseerd op de nieuwste observaties, onder meer van het Japanse onderzoeksproject VERA. Binnen dit project worden meerdere radiotelescopen in Japan ingezet om de positie en beweging van verschillende objecten in onze Melkweg vast te stellen. En op basis van die data kunnen onderzoekers zich weer een beeld vormen van de structuur van ons sterrenstelsel en de plek die wij daarin innemen. Iets wat nog niet zo eenvoudig is als je zelf in zo’n sterrenstelsel opgesloten zit.
Kaart Maar met behulp van nieuwe data en het nieuwe model zijn onderzoekers er dus toch in geslaagd om weer ietsje nauwkeuriger vast te stellen hoe onze Melkweg eruit ziet en waar wij precies in die Melkweg te vinden zijn. Ze maakten een kaart met daarop de positie en snelheid van verschillende objecten in onze Melkweg. Vervolgens hebben ze op basis van die kaart weer berekend waar het hart van onze Melkweg – oftewel het punt waar alles omheen draait – zich bevindt. En de kaart suggereert dat dat centrum – met daarin dus het superzware zwarte gat Sagittarius A* zich dichterbij bevindt dan gedacht. Waar de International Astronomical Union (IAU) de afstand eerder inschatte op 27.700 lichtjaar, hebben onderzoekers deze nu bijgesteld naar 25.800 jaar. En daarnaast blijkt het zonnestelsel en dus ook de aarde bovendien net iets sneller om het hart van de Melkweg heen te bewegen.
In de toekomst hopen astronomen van nog veel meer objecten in onze Melkweg de positie en snelheid te achterhalen. Ze richten zich daarbij met name ook op objecten die aanzienlijk dichter bij het zwarte gat in de buurt staan en onder meer meer kunnen onthullen over de beweging van onze Melkweg.
Gaia De Japanners zijn overigens niet de enigen die helder proberen te krijgen hoe ons eigen sterrenstelsel eruitziet. Zo heeft ESA in 2013 ruimtetelescoop Gaia gelanceerd. Deze telescoop is ontworpen om zeer nauwkeurig de positie, afstand en snelheid van meer dan 1 miljard sterren vast te stellen. De afgelopen jaren heeft de ruimtetelescoop al een schat aan informatie verzameld en onderzoekers in staat gesteld om een aantal interessante conclusies te trekken. Zo weten we inmiddels dat de Melkweg in het verleden met meerdere sterrenstelsels in botsing is gekomen en zich daarbij tienduizenden sterren uit andere sterrenstelsels heeft toegeëigend. Ook heeft Gaia onthuld dat onze Melkweg niet twee, maar vier armen telt en constant sterren uit andere nabije sterrenstelsels ‘steelt’. En Gaia heeft ons ongetwijfeld nog veel meer te vertellen; op 3 december wordt weer een enorme hoeveelheid data vrijgegeven waar astronomen zich in vast kunnen bijten.
