The Meaning of Mecca, Islam’s Holiest City
Mecca (also spelled as Makkah) is regarded as the holiest city in Islam. Apart from the fact that Mecca was the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, it is also the city whereIslam’s holiest placeof worship, the Great Mosque (more commonly known as al-Masjid al-Haram) is located. In addition, it is in the direction of Mecca that Muslims face when they perform their daily prayers. Furthermore, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, the Hajj, or Pilgrimage, involves an extended visit to the city.
Where is Mecca?
Mecca is located in the western part of the Arabian Peninsula, in what is today the Makkah region of Saudi Arabia. The sacred city is historically part of the Hejaz, which stretches along the Arabian Peninsula’s Red Sea coast from Jordan in the north to the Asir region in the south. Mecca is situated 73 km (45 mi.) inland from Jeddah, the commercial hub of Saudi Arabia.
The city sits in the Wadi Ibrahim (Valley of Abraham), and is surrounded by the Sirat Mountains. There are four passes through the mountains that grant access to the holy city.

Mecca is most closely associated with the Islamic faith. Nevertheless, the city was already a significant religious center and key spot for trading even before the founding of Islam. This is due to the fact that Mecca was an oasis on the trade route that linked the Mediterranean world with Southern Arabia, East Africa, and the Indian subcontinent.
Due to Mecca’s strategic geographical location, it was developed during the Roman and Byzantine periods. It is possible that Mecca was also known to the peoples of the Hellenistic period. In Ptolemy’s Geography, a city in the interior of the Arabian Peninsula called Macoraba is mentioned. Macoraba has been traditionally identified with Mecca, though some modern scholars have cast doubts on this identification.
The Earliest History of Mecca
Still, ancient writings referring to Mecca seems to be scarce. Instead, the main source of information for this part of the city’s history comes from later Islamic and Arabic sources. Islamic tradition, for example, traces the history of Mecca all the way back to the beginning of time .
It is believed that when Adam and Eve were thrown out of Paradise, they were separated. Adam landed on the island of Sri Lanka, while Eve found herself in the area that is now Jeddah. After wandering the earth on their own for a period of time, Adam and Eve were reunited by God on Mount Arafat, to the east of Mecca. Arabic sources also state that Adam was buried in Mecca. Eve, on the other hand, was buried in nearby Jeddah.
The next appearance of Mecca in Islamic tradition is in the story of the Great Flood. It is said that during the flood, Noah’s ark came to Mecca, and passed around the disinterred body of Adam seven times. According to the Quran, Abraham and Ishmael (Abraham’s son by Hagar) were responsible for building (or rebuilding) the Kaaba in Mecca (more about the Ka’aba later in this article). The city is also associated with Abraham by the belief that it was there that Hagar nursed Ishmael back to health with the waters of the Well of Zamzam.
The Arabian Peninsula Before Islam
Muslims refer to the period on the Arabian Peninsula before the arrival of Islam as Jahiliyya, which may be translated to mean ‘Age of Ignorance’. The term Jahiliyya is normally used pejoratively to refer to the pre-Islamic period in the Arabian Peninsula. The Jahiliyya period is important for Muslims, as it is serves to highlight the change brought about by Islam to the Arab way of life.
Some features of the Jahiliyya period include: the worship of idols, tribalism, and the practice of female infanticide. In short, the Jahiliyya period was thought to have been a dark age. Interestingly, the term Jahiliyya is considered to be positive with regards to Arabic literature, as pre-Islamic Arabic poetry is esteemed by Muslims.

The birth of Islam is normally portrayed as a radical break from the Jahiliyya period. The story of Islam began in Mecca in 570 AD. According to tradition, this was the year that the Prophet Muhammad was born.
For the first 40 years of his life, Muhammad lived as an ordinary man. Muhammad’s father is said to have died before he was born, while his mother died when he was six years old. The future prophet was raised by his paternal grandfather until the latter’s death two years later.
Finally, he came into the care of his uncle, Abu Talib, who had become the new head of the Hashim clan. According to one story, while accompanying his uncle on a trading journey to Syria, Muhammad was recognized as a future prophet by a Christian monk. At the age of 25, Muhammad married a wealthy woman named Khadijah, who was 40 years old. Khadijah had employed Muhammad to oversee the transportation of her goods to Syria, and was so impressed by him, that she offered to marry him.
Every once in a while, Muhammad would seclude himself in a cave on one of the mountains near Mecca. One night in his fortieth year, as Muhammad was meditating in the cave, the angel Jibril (Gabriel) appeared to him, and gave him his first revelation. The angel taught him the opening verses of Surah 96 of the Quran: “Recite in the name of your Lord who creates, / creates man from a clot! / Recite for your Lord is most generous…”
The encounter with the angel left Muhammad feeling disturbed, but he was reassured by Khadijah and her cousin, Waraqah ibn Nawfal (a Christian who confirmed Muhammad’s prophethood). Muhammad continued receiving revelations from Jibril, but for the next three years, limited himself to speaking about them in private.

Eventually, Muhammad was commanded by God to preach publicly. Initially, the Meccans did not oppose Muhammad. When the prophet began proclaiming that there is no god but Allah, however, he began to face opposition from the Quraysh of Mecca.
This is due to the fact that the monotheism preached by Muhammad was perceived as an attack on the religious beliefs and practices of the Quraysh. Moreover, the Quraysh feared that the economy of the city would be affected if they accepted Muhammad’s message and became monotheists because pagan pilgrims would stop coming to the city.
Although Muhammad faced opposition from the majority of the Meccans, he received protection from his clan, and was therefore able to stay in the city. In 619 AD, however, his uncle, Abu Talib, died, and leadership of the clan passed to another of the prophet’s uncles, Abu Lahab.
Abu Lahab opposed Muhammad, so he withdrew the clan’s protection of the prophet. This meant that Muhammad was no longer safe in Mecca. In 622 AD, Muhammad and his followers left Mecca for Medina, a journey which is referred to as the Hijrah. 622 AD is also the year in which the Islamic calendar begins. In 630 AD, the Muslims were strong enough to march an army on Mecca. The Meccans submitted, and an amnesty was declared by the prophet.
The Holy City of Mecca
Interestingly, despite being the holiest city in Islam, Mecca never became the capital of any Islamic state. The immediate successors of Muhammad, the Rashidun caliphs, for instance, ruled from Medina (with the exception of the fourth caliph, Ali, who moved the capital to Kufa). The Umayyads who followed ruled from Damascus, while their successors, the Abbasids, were based in Baghdad. The latter moved to Cairo after the Mongols invaded.
Lastly, the Ottoman caliphs ruled from Constantinople. Nevertheless, Islamic rulers continued to contribute to the upkeep of the holy city, and served as its defenders. The title ‘Protector of the Two Holy Cities’ (referring to Mecca and Medina), for instance, has been used by various Muslim rulers in history.
As a holy city, Mecca retained its significance in the Muslim faith. The most obvious sign of this is the fact that when Muslims perform their daily prayers, they do so in the direction of Mecca. Another clear sign of Mecca’s religious significance is the role it plays in the Hajj. This is the last of Islam’s Five Pillars, which states that every Muslim who is physically and financially able to do so should make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.
The Hajj is an annual pilgrimage that takes place during the during the Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic year. More precisely, it begins on the 7th day of that month, and ends on the 12th day. One of the most important rituals of the Hajj is the tawaf, which is the circumambulation of the pilgrims around the Ka’aba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. The Ka’aba is a small shrine located near the center of the al-Masjid al-Haram, and is considered by Muslims to be the most sacred spot on earth.
According to Islamic belief, Abraham was instructed by God to bring Hagar and their son, Ishmael, to Arabia from Palestine to protect them from the jealousy of Sarah. Abraham brought the two of them to the site of Mecca, and left them there, as instructed by God. Although he gave them some supplies of food and water before leaving, it ran out.
Soon, Hagar and Ishmael were suffering from hunger and thirst. In desperation, the mother ran up and down two hills, Safa and Marwa, to see if she could spot any help in the distance. Finally, Hagar collapsed beside her son out of exhaustion, and prayed to God for help. At that moment, Ishmael struck his foot on the ground, and water gushed out, and thus the two were saved. This is said to be the origin of the Well of Zamzam. The Spring of Zamzam, from which the well draws its waters, is believed to be a tributary of the Waters of Paradise.

The miracle not only saved Hagar and Ishmael, but also allowed them to make a living, as they were able to trade their water with passing nomads for food and supplies. Sometime later, Abraham returned to check on Hagar and Ishmael, and was commanded by God to build the Ka’aba. According to one interpretation of the verse, Abraham was told to rebuild the shrine.
This may mean that there was an older shrine, one said to have been erected by Adam, the foundations of which were left by the time of Abraham. As time went by, the people of Mecca became polytheists, and idols were placed in the Ka’aba. When the Meccans surrendered to Muhammad in 630 AD, the Ka’aba was cleansed of its idols.
In the eastern corner of the Ka’aba is the Black Stone. As part of the tawaf, pilgrims touch and kiss this sacred object. The Black Stone is believed to date to the time of Adam and Eve. According to Islamic belief, the stone was given to Adam when he was cast out of Paradise so that he could obtain forgiveness for his sins.
The Black Stone is said to have been concealed during the Great Flood, but was restored to Abraham when he was building / re-building the Ka’aba. Legend has it that the stone was originally white in color, but turned black as a result of absorbing the sins of the countless pilgrims who have touched and kissed it.
Mecca’s status as the holiest city in Islam has been maintained from the faith’s beginning till this day. In the almost 1400 years since Islam was established, Mecca has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Ownership of the sacred city, for instance, has switched hands many times in its long history.

In 1269, for example, Mecca came under the control of the Mamluks, while in 1517, the city fell into the hands of the Ottomans. In 1925, Mecca was captured by the Saudis, and it has remained a part of their kingdom since then. For the faithful, however, such political changes are of secondary importance, as the Hajj has been performed over the centuries, regardless of who is in charge of the city.
NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter is the first spacecraft to successfully achieve controlled flight on another planet.

Ingenuity, NASA’s pint-sized Mars helicopter, has kicked up some surprising science on its flights over the red planet. When whizzing through the Martian air, its blades sometimes stir up a dust cloud that envelops and travels along with the tiny chopper.
In several videos of Ingenuity’s flights, planetary scientists have seen dust whirling beneath the helicopter’s rotors — even when Ingenuity is flying as high as 5 metres above the Martian surface. That suggests that dust can get lifted and transported in the thin Martian air more easily than researchers had suspected.
“It’s really cool,” says Mark Lemmon, a planetary scientist at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.
On its fourth flight, on 30 April, Ingenuity kicked up a large bolus of dust that travelled along with the helicopter as it flew, as shown in this video taken by Perseverance.

Mars is a dusty planet, so it’s not surprising that the helicopter kicks up dust during takeoff and landing, much as helicopters on Earth do when operating in the desert. Engineers designed Ingenuity to operate with a lot of dust blowing around as it takes off and lands. But scientists are surprised by how the dust interacts with the drone during flight. By watching how Ingenuity entrains dust as it flies, researchers can better understand the dynamics of Mars’s thin atmosphere, where tornado-like ‘dust devils’ often form when the Sun heats the air and afternoon winds begin to blow.
“There’s an unanticipated atmospheric science experiment coming out of this,” says Jim Bell, a planetary scientist at Arizona State University in Tempe.
Ingenuity is what NASA calls a technology demonstration, whose only goal is to show that flight on Mars is possible. So "anything we can learn from it scientifically is icing on the cake", says Brian Jackson, a physicist at Boise State University in Idaho who studies Martian dust.
Bizarre dust clouds
Space scientists and amateur image processors have been analysing images and videos of the helicopter that NASA has posted online.
The agency's Perseverance rover carried Ingenuity to the surface of Mars in February. Its job is to roll around Jezero Crater and explore the rocks that were once part of an ancient lake, to look for signs of past life. In April, Ingenuity became the first machine to achieve powered flight on another planet. It has made seven flights so far.

On the first two flights, Ingenuity kicked up a fair amount of dust as it rose 3 to 5 metres above the surface, but it didn’t travel far from its takeoff point and the dust cloud phenomenon wasn’t pronounced. On its third flight, the helicopter rose 5 metres and then flew north from its takeoff point, kicking up a cloud from several light-coloured patches it flew over on the Martian surface. Those patches might be small hollows where dust has collected in the Martian landscape, says Lemmon. “A lot more dust comes up at that moment” when the helicopter flies over them, he says.
Ingenuity’s blades spin at more than 2,400 revolutions per minute — a dizzying rate necessary for the helicopter to achieve lift in the Martian atmosphere, which is just 1% the density of Earth's.
It was Ingenuity’s fourth flight, on 30 April, that really intrigued scientists. A video, recorded by Perseverance from a vantage point nearby, shows the helicopter rise, disappear from view, and then re-appear while enveloped in an enormous cloud of dust following a 133-metre flight.
The video confirms that Ingenuity was flying along with the 3.5-metre-per-second wind, says Håvard Grip, the helicopter's chief pilot at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "The dust was getting carried beneath us," he says.
Lemmon plans to compare tracks on the Martian surface left behind by natural dust devils with those where the helicopter kicked up the most dust. That will help researchers to better understand how winds blowing across Mars can lift dust and spin it into dust devils. The Martian atmosphere is so thin that scientists have had a hard time explaining how so much dust gets aloft, says Jackson. "We have to know how that first step in the process works," he says.
Ingenuity ran into some trouble on its sixth flight, on 22 May; it began wobbling because of a glitch in its navigation system, but managed to land safely. On its seventh flight, on 8 June, it flew 106 metres with no problem.
The helicopter has been wildly successful in demonstrating flight on other worlds, says Grip. In the future, bigger helicopters could travel long distances and scout out areas where wheeled vehicles cannot travel. "It's just so clear that this is definitely a way that could be used to explore Mars," he says.
Ingenuity will now tag along as Perseverance begins to roll south from its landing site. The helicopter will probably make additional flights every two weeks or so from now until the end of August, when operations are expected to draw to a close.
Perseverance has been exploring the rocks that make up Jezero Crater’s ancient lake bed. Team scientists are in the process of deciding where to drill to collect their first geological sample — either from the fractured rock that makes up the crater floor, or from a dune-laden region nearby. It will be the first in a collection of rock cores that are destined for pickup by future spacecraft, which will fly the material back to Earth — in the first-ever sample return from Mars.

Lawmakers have expressed serious concerns about the threat of UFOs to America's national security, with one lawmaker going as far as to say 'something’s going on that we can’t handle.'
The comments emerged after a highly-classified briefing from the Navy and FBI to members of the House Permanent Select Committee on counterterrorism, on Wednesday - ahead of the Pentagon's highly anticipated report on UFOs this month.
'Clearly, something’s going on that we can’t handle,' Rep. Tim Burchett warned after the briefing.
Sean Patrick Maloney added that they were taking the issue of unexplained aerial phenomena 'seriously' - especially when it comes to the national security interests of the United States - 'so we want to know what we’re dealing with.'
'There are legitimate questions involving the safety and security of our personnel, and in our operations and in our sensitive activities, and we all know that there’s [a] proliferation of technologies out there,' Maloney told the New York Post.

The Pentagon's UAP Task Force is set to deliver its report on UFO sightings by the military to Congress on June 25. An unclassified version will be made public, while a more detailed classified one will remain secret - and anticipation has been mounting over what might be revealed.

Instead, they focused on expressing their concern about how UFOs could threaten national security in the United States.
Rep. Val Demings said, 'You know it’s always about our safety and security — our national security is [priority] number one — and so that’s really the area where we really focused on this morning.'
'It was an interesting briefing,' Rep. Adam Schiff stated. 'I did learn things that were certainly new to me. But I think I’m going to leave it at that.'
Not every politician was as concerned, however, with Rep. Peter Welch saying of the forthcoming report, 'I’m not on the edge of my seat.'
At least one ex-pentagon official has already expressed concerns that could relate to national security, saying that UFOs have repeatedly meddled with U.S. nuclear technology, even forcing some facilities to go offline.
Luis Elizondo, the former head of the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, told The Washington Post last week that UFOs or as they are officially identified UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomenon) have actually interfered with U.S. nuclear technology.
'Now in this country we've had incidents where these UAPs have interfered and actually brought offline our nuclear capabilities,' Elizondo said in an interview.

The Pentagon's UAP Task Force is set to reveal their findings when they submit a long-awaited report on UFOs to Congress on June 25
Elizondo was asked about several UFO sightings above secret nuclear weapons facilities and the fact that almost every major nuclear power across the globe has reported and declassified these sightings.
He said that the phenomenon is a national security 'concern,' and added that the same observation has been made in other countries, making it a 'global issue.'
Elizondo said some people have suggested that UFOs bringing U.S. nuclear capabilities offline could be interpreted as a sign that the unidentified objects are 'peaceful' but said in other countries the UFOs have actually turned on nuclear technology.
'So that is equally, for me, just as concerning,' he said of their interference either way. 'I think that there is certainly at this point enough data to demonstrate there is an interest in our nuclear technology, a potential to even interfere with that nuclear technology.'
Elizondo also told the Post that the Pentagon's upcoming report will definitively state that UAPs are not U.S. technology, despite speculation.
He said he believed the findings would conclude that they were also not Russian or Chinese technology either, saying that instead he believes it is 'next generation' technology, decades ahead of our own.
'You know, through observations we are, we are quite convinced that we’re dealing with a technology that is multigenerational, several generations ahead of what we consider next generation technology, so what we would consider beyond next generation technology,' he said. 'Something that could be anywhere between 50 to 1,000 years ahead of us.'

Earlier this week, a top physicist also expressed alarm of UFOs, though physicist and science writer Mark Buchanan wrote in a recent Washington Post op-ed that he was concerned that alien contact could result in 'the end of all life on earth.'
'Chances are, we should all be grateful that we don't yet have any evidence of contact with alien civilizations,' Buchanan writes.
'Attempting to communicate with extraterrestrials, if they do exist, could be extremely dangerous for us.'
Search for extraterrestrial intelligence astronomer Joe Gertz echoed Buchanan's sentiments, stating that all of our attempts at communicating with extraterrestrials could ultimately cause 'the reckless endangerment of all mankind, and be absolutely proscribed with criminal consequences, presumably as exercised at the national level, or administered through the International Court of Justice in The Hague.'
Buchanan compared a possible alien encounter to Christopher Columbus coming to North America, where an older civilization was vulnerable to the more technologically-advanced Europeans.
However, astronomers and scientists from a differing school of thought believe extraterrestrial contact could only benefit humanity through the use of alien technology, which in turn could improve the planet's sustainability.
Douglas Vakoch, an American astrobiologist, search for extraterrestrial intelligence researcher, psychologist, and president of METI International, is one of those astronomers who not only believes in contacting aliens, he's actively doing so.
While UFOs have been sighted by civilians for decades, their existence was brushed off as nothing more than a conspiracy theory.
But public opinion has shifted in recent years, especially after video footage and pictures taken by U.S. Navy pilots between mid-2014 and March 2015, was leaked to the New York Times, three years ago.
The images showed a 30 to 40ft object, shaped like a Tic Tac, with no wings or rotors, yet able to hover, turn and accelerate through the sky at hypersonic speeds. The flabbergasted Navy pilots can be heard exclaiming in awe: ‘Oh dude!’
A New York Times also reported on a shadowy organization based at the Pentagon dedicated to reports of UFO sightings, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program — AATIP.
In April 2020 the Defense Department released several videos, one of which shows a US Navy aircraft encountering 'unidentified aerial phenomena,' including objects flying and moving at speeds and directions that are impossible for human-made flight.
Just a year prior, leaked Pentagon footage showed an unidentified flying object hovering over San Diego, suggesting that maybe a 'close encounter of the third kind' isn't so far off from happening.
With a June 25 deadline, the Pentagon has just one more week to release its report on unidentified aerial phenomena, but the U.S. House Intelligence Committee received a detailed briefing on June 16 by Navy and FBI Personnel, and many of the members expressed concern – not only that it doesn’t reveal enough but also but that there is a real unease about things that can’t be explained. Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee told a TMZ reporter before the briefing that “Clearly, something’s going on that we can’t handle.” Specifically:
“It has to be something that is out of our galaxy, it just has to be if it in fact is real.
“I think Roswell was covered up.”
Burchett also referenced what he said (and many agree with) were UFO references in the bible, particularly in the book of Ezekiel. Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the committee chairman, said in The New York Post that the briefing was “interesting” and he “did learn things that were certainly new to me,” but wouldn’t give any details. Rep. Mike Quigley of Illinois said was glad the “stigma is gone” from UFO discussions and “the fact that they are taking this sort of thing seriously for the first time, I think, is important.” If one needs more proof this briefing was considered important, look no further than the fact it was held inside a SCIF, or “sensitive compartmented information facility.”
“Everyone who’s paid enough attention to it understands they need to take it seriously. But once you go beyond that circle, you get people who are understandably resistant because of the tinfoil hat stigma. If [these objects] had the flag of Russia on the side, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Every one of these would be reported; everyone would be on top of it.”
Burchett said there was no way the UAPs seen by Navy personnel were Russian, as did former deputy defense secretary David Norquist, who set up a task force in 2020 to investigate UAPs but was not part of the briefing. He told CNN the “tinfoil hat” skeptics may have prevented more from being revealed. Which side is President Biden on? Burchett told TMZ he didn’t think Biden brought it up with Vladimir Putin in their summit in Geneva – which coincidentally occurred at about the same time as the briefing.

“If the Russians had UFO technology, I mean, they would own us right now, they used to say that they’ve heard people talk about how the Nazis had it in the second world war that they did, they would have won. That is ridiculous.”
A discussion of who owns UFOs between two world leaders is “ridiculous”? No wonder Burchett thinks they’re from “out of our galaxy.”
If there’s one positive takeaway from the briefing, it’s that there really is a Pentagon report on UAPs and all signs indicate it wall be released soon. Congress members are concerned. The suspense is becoming unbearable. Let’s hope these are signs it will be worth the wait.
There have been plenty of strange flaps of mysterious lights and luminous phenomena in the skies of our world. Such spates of sightings often come in a wave, only to just fade away leaving no explanations and plenty of awe and debate. One such case happened in Northern Europe in the region of Scandinavia back in 1946. During this one year period there would be thousands of sightings of something very odd going on up in the sky, which have never really been explained and have come to be known as the Ghost Rockets.
Beginning in 1946, mysterious objects in the sky began to appear frequently over a variety of Scandinavian countries, in particular Sweden and Finland. These objects were typically described as tubular or cigar or spindle-shaped objects, sometimes with visible wings and sometimes without, that typically streaked fast across the sky but also displayed all manner of erratic behavior. These objects were reported as speeding up or slowing down, doing aerial maneuvers, and even flying in formation, typically leaving no exhaust trail and almost always described as being completely silent, although a few reports described a hissing or rumbling sound. They were seen at all hours of the day and night, and were so bright they could even be seen in broad daylight. The first real recorded sighting of what would go on to be called “Ghost Rockets” was made in Finland on February 26, 1946, but soon the entire region would experience a surge of sightings of these things in the sky, with around 2,000 sightings reports made between May and December of that year alone, often with radar signatures to back them up.

At times, there were even reported crashes of Ghost Rockets, usually with the rockets coming down into large bodies of water such as lakes or the sea. There were quite a few such crashes that allegedly happened, and on more than one occasion Swedish authorities moved in to investigate, even sending divers in to look for evidence of any mysterious objects on the bottom. One of the most well-known of these investigations was carried out at Sweden’s Lake Kölmjärv, where on July 19, 1946 a gray, rocket-shaped object with wings reportedly came down after an earsplitting boom, to go skidding over the surface and sink. The Swedish Air Force quickly moved in and spent around 3 weeks scouring the bottom of the lake, but they would officially find nothing but a large patch of lake bottom that had been disturbed and looked like something very big had impacted there. No fragments or reason why this crater was there could be found, and one Swedish Air Force officer would state:
There are many indications that the Kölmjärv object disintegrated itself. The object was probably manufactured in a lightweight material, possibly a kind of magnesium alloy that would disintegrate easily, and not give indications on our instruments.
Several more military investigations were carried out at other similar crash sites, but on every occasion it was claimed that nothing was found. In the meantime, sightings of the Ghost Rockets were pouring in from all over Scandinavia, and although Sweden tried to keep a lid on it all, there were simply too many reports to keep it all a secret, with headlines around the world covering the strange phenomenon. When pressed for answers as to what was going on, Sweden projected a skeptical stance that anything truly unexplainable was happening, largely writing it off as a mixture of atmospheric phenomena, meteors, aircraft, and overactive imaginations. However, they did concede that not all of the reports of Ghost Rockets were so easy to dismiss, and in October of 1946 the Swedish Defense Staff would tell a press conference:
Most observations are vague and must be treated very skeptically. In some cases, however, clear, unambiguous observations have been made that cannot be explained as natural phenomena, Swedish aircraft, or imagination on the part of the observer. Echo, radar, and other equipment registered readings but gave no clue as to the nature of the objects.
Most in the scientific community wrote it off as meteors, as several alleged fragments from the Ghost Rockets that had been examined turned out to be either pieces of meteorites or just plain old coke or slag, in other words, rocks. However, not everyone was so sure all of the phenomena could be attributed to meteorites, due to the fact that the objects often were seen doing acrobatics, flying horizontally, flying in formation, or accelerating and decelerating, none of which are things meteorites are known to do, and they also did not typically leave trails behind them.
The phenomenon also attracted the interest of the United States, and two U.S. experts on aerial warfare, a General Jimmy Doolittle and General David Sarnoff, went to Sweden in August of 1946, ostensibly on other unrelated business, but who also asked around to the Swedish military about the Ghost Rockets. In fact, they were given briefings on the phenomenon and able to interview many senior officers with the Swedish Air Force. The two generals went away convinced that the Ghost Rockets were a real thing and not a myth. When they brought their findings back to the United States, the Americans came to the conclusion that these were actual missiles being seen, likely top-secret V-1 or V-2 missiles being fired by the Germans from a rocket facility at the German seaside town of Peenemünde. Lt. Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg, who was the director of the Central Intelligence Group (CIG), would write a Top Secret memo to President Truman explaining this theory, saying:
The weight of evidence pointed to Peenemünde as origin of the missiles, that a US MA [military attaché] in Moscow had been told by a ‘key Swedish Air Officer’ that radar course-plotting had led to conclusion that Peenemünde was the launch site. CIG speculates that the missiles are extended-range developments of V-1 being aimed for the Gulf of Bothnia for test purposes and do not overfly Swedish territory specifically for intimidation; self-destruct by small demolition charge or burning.
The problem with this is that not only had there been no reported launches of any sort of missile or rocket from Peenemünde at the time, but missiles don’t speed up and slow down or do the extreme aerial acrobatics seen with the Ghost Rockets any more than meteorites do. Despite the widespread belief that these Ghost Rockets must have been meteorites, rockets, or both, the U.S. government seemed to remain open to the idea that they could have been something more outlandish and mysterious. In a top secret document by USAFE (United States Air Force Europe) from 1948 that was declassified in 1997, the Swedish Ghost Rockets are mentioned, as is a supposed crash of one of them that left a crater at the bottom of the lake, and the document says:
They (UFOs) have been reported by so many sources and from such a variety of places that we are convinced that they cannot be disregarded and must be explained on some basis which is perhaps slightly beyond the scope of our present intelligence thinking. When officers of this Directorate recently visited the Swedish Air Intelligence Service, this question was put to the Swedes. Their answer was that some reliable and fully technically qualified people have reached the conclusion that ‘these phenomena are obviously the result of a high technical skill which cannot be credited to any presently known culture on earth’. They are therefore assuming that these objects originate from some previously unknown or unidentified technology, possibly outside the earth. We are inclined not to discredit entirely this somewhat spectacular theory [extraterrestrial origins], meantime keeping an open mind on the subject.
The lights would disappear just as suddenly as they started, reports would dry up, and we would be left to wonder just what was going on here. To this day there has been no clear explanation for what caused the Ghost Rockets flap of 1946, despite much discussion and debate. Were these meteorites, rockets, some weird atmospheric phenomena, or all of the above? Or was it perhaps something altogether stranger and more otherworldly? Why did it all congregate in this region in 1946 and what is it that the governments involved might not be telling us? No one really knows, and the Scandinavian Ghost Rockets remain a curious unsolved mystery.
My previous article was on the subject of the Bigfoot-UFO connection. It’s important to note, however, that Bigfoot is not the only cryptozoological creature that has been tied to aliens. Take, for example, the matter of the mysterious Dogmen. There’s no doubt that the leading researcher in the field of the Dogman is Linda Godfrey. And, interestingly, Linda has a relevant story to tell about the Dogmen; a story that ties the creatures to aliens. In 2005, Linda was contacted by a man – a military whistle-blower, we might say – who was an expert in the field of remote-viewing. According to Linda’s Edward Snowden-like source, the U.S. Government has uncovered data suggesting that the werewolf-like Dogmen are a very ancient, alien race that closely resembles a certain ancient deity of the Underworld. And who might that be? It’s Anubis, that’s who. Linda’s informant also discovered – via remote-viewing – that the Dogmen can “jump” from location to location via portals or doorways in the fabric of space and time. Wormholes, we might say. That’s quite a story told to Linda.
Moving on: between the nights of December 26 and 29, 1980, multiple, extraordinary events of the UFO kind occurred within Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England. They were events that involved military personnel from the nearby Royal Air Force stations of Bentwaters and Woodbridge. Since that now long gone period, countless U.S. Air Force personnel, who were stationed in the area at the time, have spoken out regarding their knowledge of a small, triangular-shaped object that was seen maneuvering in the forest. Others described seeing in the dark woods almost ghostly, extraterrestrial-type beings of short size and with eerie, feline-like eyes. Strange and unknown lights were seen dancing around the night skies, circling both the forest and the twin military facilities. There were stories that the amazing movements of the UFOs were caught on radar. There is, however, something else: a strange creature seen in the very same forest.
Rendlesham Forest, as well as the Suffolk locales of West Wratting and Balsham, is reportedly home to something equally as strange – maybe even far more so – than a vehicle and creatures from another world. It is a beast that, locally, has come to be known as the Shug Monkey. Described as being a bizarre combination of giant dog, muscular bear, and large ape, the creature is said to take its name from either (A) an old English word – scucca – which means demon, and which, as we have seen already, also has a link to the naming of Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire; or (B) an old east-coast term – shucky – that translates, into modern day terminology, as hairy or shaggy. Maybe the name is even born out of a curious melding of both terms. But, whatever the true nature of the name applied to the foul, hairy entity, its presence in the woods of Suffolk is enough to strike deep terror into the hearts of those souls unfortunate enough to have crossed its path.
Now, let’s take a trip to Loch Ness, Scotland – the home of the legendary Nessies. Just like the Bigfoot creatures, the Dogmen and the Shug Monkey, the Loch Ness Monsters have connections to UFOs. On August 13, 1971, a notable encounter occurred at Loch Ness. Not with a monster, but with a UFO. The witness was one Graham Snape, who told Nessie-seeker Ted Holiday that he saw an unidentified object crossing the skies above Loch Ness in a left to right fashion, quickly, and with not even a bit of accompanying noise. The somewhat circular-shaped UFO was purple with a white center. By his own admission, Snape was unsure of the size of the object but suggested it was around five-feet in diameter. More Loch Ness weirdness hit the news in 2011, specifically in August of that year. The UK’s Daily Express newspaper splashed a headline across its pages that read: “Alert as UFO is sighted over Loch Ness.” The story was, undoubtedly, an odd one. That something occurred does not appear to be in doubt. It is, however, the nature of the “something” that remains open to debate. It was on the night of August 20, 2011 that a number of people –many being completely independent of each other – encountered something unusual in the skies over Loch Ness.
Witness descriptions of the movements of the object fell into two camps: those who said they saw it descending into the loch and those who maintained it was actually hovering above the expansive waters. As for the appearance of the UFO, it very much depended on who one asked. But, whatever it was, it quickly caught the attention of the emergency services, who were contacted by worried locals. Martin Douglas, of the Loch Ness Life Boat crew, told the Daily Mail that someone in the area had seen what, superficially at least, resembled a microlight or a hang-glider, and which actually seemed to enter the loch in a controlled flight. Oddly, however, others who saw the unknown craft described it as being somewhat balloon-shaped. Then there were those who opined it looked eerily like a fully-open parachute. There was, then, no real, solid consensus on what was seen – or on what wasn’t seen.
And, of course, there’s the Mothman of Point Pleasant, West Virginia that plagued the area from 1966 to 1967. The red-eyed, winged thing was not the only strange thing seen in and around the city. Men in Black prowled around, terrifying witnesses to UFOs and the Mothman itself. What all of this tells us (including the information in my Bigfoot-UFO article) is that, like it or not, where strange, cryptozoological creatures are seen, so are UFOs. Somewhere there’s an answer to all of this, but outright denying the reality of these weird connections between UFOs, aliens and monsters will get us nowhere. In fact, it will push us back, rather than forward.

Four massive planets 135 light years away from Earth will be sent 'pinballing' around their solar system when the sun they orbit eventually dies, a new study suggests.
Astronomers say the planets, more than five times the mass of Jupiter, will fly loose from their orbits and bounce off each other's gravity in a similar way to a game of pinball.
They are currently locked in a 'perfect rhythm' around a 30 to 40 million-year-old star, with each one completing double the orbit of its close neighbour.

WHAT IS THE HR 8799 SYSTEM AND WHEN WAS IT DISCOVERED?
The HR 8799 system is made up of four unusually massive planets orbiting a star that is 30 to 40 million years old.
It was discovered almost 13 years ago and has been 'iconic' for exoplanetary science ever since, according to one researcher.
The four planets, which are more than five times the mass of Jupiter, are currently in a 'perfect rhythm' around their sun 135 light years away from Earth, researchers have said.
Although this is expected to continue for the next three billion years, it will break when the star enters its red giant phase.
It will then expand to several hundred times its current size and eject nearly half its mass, finishing as a white dwarf.
For every orbit the furthest planet completes, the next closest completes two, the next completes four, while the closest completes eight.
Despite the effects of Galactic tides and close flybys of other stars, this is likely to continue for the next three billion years, researchers from the universities of Warwick and Exeter determined.
However, it will break when the star in the HR 8799 system enters its red giant phase.
At this point it will expand to several hundred times its current size and eject nearly half its mass, finishing as a white dwarf and wreaking havoc with the gravitational forces in the solar system.
The planets will then start to pinball and become a highly chaotic system where their movements become very uncertain.
Changing a planet's position by even one centimetre at the start of the process can dramatically change the outcome, researchers say.
Lead author, Dr Dimitri Veras, from the University of Warwick department of physics, said: 'The planets will gravitationally scatter off of one another.
'In one case, the innermost planet could be ejected from the system. Or, in another case, the third planet may be ejected.
'Or the second and fourth planets could switch positions. Any combination is possible just with little tweaks.
'They are so big and so close to each other the only thing that's keeping them in this perfect rhythm right now is the location of their orbits.
'All four are connected in this chain. As soon as the star loses mass, their locations will deviate, then two of them will scatter off one another, causing a chain reaction amongst all four.'

As well as the star and four unusually massive planets, the HR 8799 system also contains two debris discs – one inside the orbit of the innermost planet and the other outside the outermost.
When the pinball game is triggered, researchers are certain the planets will move around enough to dislodge this debris and knock it into their dying sun.
They hope this modelling can offer new insight into how white dwarfs with polluted atmospheres originally evolved.
Astronomers are analysing this type of debris today to discover the histories of other white dwarf systems.
Dr Veras added: 'These planets move around the white dwarf at different locations and can easily kick whatever debris is still there into the white dwarf, polluting it.
'The HR 8799 planetary system represents a foretaste of the polluted white dwarf systems that we see today. It's a demonstration of the value of computing the fates of planetary systems, rather than just looking at their formation.'
Co-author, Professor Sasha Hinkley, of the University of Exeter, said: 'The HR 8799 system has been so iconic for exoplanetary science since its discovery nearly 13 years ago, and so it is fascinating to see into the future, and watch it evolve from a harmonious collection of planets into a chaotic scene.'
THE VERY LARGE TELESCOPE IS A POWERFUL GROUND-BASED INSTRUMENT IN CHILE
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) built the most powerful telescope ever made in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.
It is called the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and is widely regarded as one of the most advanced optical instruments ever made.
It consists of four telescopes, whose main mirrors measures 27 feet (8.2 metres) in diameter.
There are also four movable six feet (1.8 metre) diameter auxiliary telescopes.
The large telescopes are called Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun.
The European Southern observatory (ESO) built the most powerful telescope ever made in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile and called it the Very Large Telescope (VLT).
The first of the Unit Telescopes, 'Antu', went into routine scientific operations on April 1, 1999.
The telescopes can work together to form a giant 'interferometer'.
This interferometer allows images to be filtered for any unnecessary obscuring objects and, as a result, astronomers can see details up to 25 times finer than with the individual telescopes.
It has been involved in spotting the first image of an extrasolar planet as well as tracking individual stars moving around the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way.
It also observed the afterglow of the furthest known Gamma Ray Burst.
Four large worlds located in a multi-planet system called HR 8799 will someday end up playing space pinball with one another. As of right now, these planets are orbiting their host star located about 135 light-years away from us in an organized and locked rhythm, but that will eventually change when their sun dies.
According to astronomers in a new study, these massive planets (they are over five times the mass of Jupiter) will be sent “pinballing” around their system after their star dies (it is currently between 30 and 40 million years old) as they will lose their perfect orbits and starting crashing and bouncing off of each other.
Their orbits are presently perfect as one planet completes double the orbit of the previous closest world. To understand this better, when one planet completes an orbit, the next one does two orbits, followed by the next world completing four orbits, and the last one doing eight.

Researchers from the universities of Warwick and Exeter have calculated that the “pinballing” event won’t happen for another three billion years when the host star will begin its phase of becoming a red giant. When this happens, the star will lose almost half of its mass and grow several hundred times the size it is now until it becomes a white dwarf.
At that point, the planets will begin to bounce around as explained by Dr. Dimitri Veras from the department of physics at the University of Warwick, “The planets will gravitationally scatter off of one another.” “In one case, the innermost planet could be ejected from the system. And that’s not all as there are two debris discs located in the system – one inside the innermost planet’s orbit, and the other on the outside of the outermost world’s orbit. It may seem easy to dismiss the UFO phenomenon for the average human going about their daily lives. From Ancient Aliens to War of the Worlds, pop culture around the world has banked off the idea that we are not alone in this universe for nearly a century. Yet, as time moves forward and technological capabilities increase, the thought still remains. And questions about the subject are more widespread than ever before.
Today, concerns on the issue may deepen. And acceptance over the potential issue is set to grow. The United States Congress itself is to be briefed over what the Pentagon claims to know so far about what has possibly been lurking over the human world.
In a report from The U.S. Sun, what is known about the truth of the matter from U.S. intelligence agencies will be told to lawmakers in Congress as of today.
Experts from the Navy, the FBI and the Pentagon will reveal what they know so far to Congress.
Representative Andre Carson will chair the classified briefing. He claims that the meeting is a “significant and timely topic” due to growing concerns that the unidentified aerial phenomenon might be an issue of national security. Some in congress have warned that this may be an unknown technological advantage from the likes of Russia or China. But others are not so quick to reduce the idea to human efforts.
Representative Tim Burchett told TMZ that, “If they had the kind of advanced technology pilots have reported seeing, Putin would already own America.” The news does come on the same day that Biden and Putin had a conference meeting. But doubts are high that there is any correlation on that matter.
This is the first time since the Disclosure Project event at the National Press Club on May 9th, 2001 that government officials have gathered to reveal truths on the matter. Before that, Project Blue Book from the U.S. Air force researching the idea had come to the conclusion that there was nothing to see. It ended its own research in 1969. Humans across the United States have to question the matter on their own. There is little official reporting from any news or government agencies since the time. Now, that narrative has seemed to have come to a great change.
In recent years, the Pentagon has released a few important but hardly decipherable videos claiming to show UFO activity.
The videos have sparked intense debate and conversation across media outlets worldwide. But the public has not seen anything concrete or entirely revealing as of now. The briefing to Congress is still a big step in a direction towards understanding what is actually happening here.
UFO documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell said in a recent statement to Newsmax that, “It leaves us with some uncomfortable truths that these are not ours. Soon we’re going to know it’s not Russian, it’s not Chinese, it’s not any foreign nation that is technologically developed as we know it… They fly with impunity through our airspace. They outmaneuver, outperform our greatest warships and warcraft. The big question is who’s operating these unidentified flying objects and what is their intent? We need to start asking the hard questions and eradicating the stigma associated with these because they’re right in front of your eyes.”
Thousands of UFO sightings are reported and documented every year, according to statista.com.
The number has jumped from 319 in 1990 to 7,267 in 2020 alone. These individual reports include everything from triangle-shaped UFOs in the skies to UFOs breaking apart into geometric fleets. They also include reports of UFOs, astonishingly, coming from the ocean instead of coming down from the sky. Some have been reported to shut down nuclear facilities. Some have been reported to actually abduct humans from the Earth.
The truth still seemingly remains unknown. But as information is set to be declassified sooner than later, let us hope that the real truth is what we are about to see and not further games from players on the world stage with a set agenda of God knows what. There is a great deal of hype around the subject. And many are prepared to build an understanding of what is happening here.

June 11. The gentleman speaking on the video asked if anyone else saw it and if anyone knew what it was. No one seemed to think it was a UFO. Most people said it was the the lunar eclipse. In the video he said it wasn’t a fire but that he saw vapour. Whatever it was it was giving off enough heat to cause vapour in the cold temperatures we have at night.

This object was sighted as the witness was coming into land at San Juan in Puerto Rico and of the bat we can tell that this is not a reflection from a light inside the plane as when the buildings we see that the object goes behind them and remerges. If this is another plane then where is the Navigation lights, These should blink every two to three seconds and in the footage their are no blinking lights. As for a boat this would have to be a pretty fast & big boat to keep pace with the airplane. So what do you guys think this could be??

This object seen to look like the classic saucer shape craft and could these crafts making a return? The object looks metallic with the sun shining upon the top part of the UFO leaving the bottom part a darker gray color. On vacation with my husband we enjoy sitting and talking on the beach in the evenings and listening to the waves. On June 13th we were sitting on the beach and heard someone say what is that? We looked to our left and 2 reddish orbs were above the beach almost looked like they were flying towards us. We watched a couple minutes or so trying to come up with an explanation of what they could be but we have seen tons of helicopters and planes in the skies at night and it was clearly not either one. They never moved away from one another , they stayed the same distance from each other and didn’t appear to be carried by wind. By the time I got my phone out to record them one just seemed to dim out, not long after the other did the same. Not sure what we saw but it seemed to also puzzle the others on the beach around us.
While searching a Ceres map I noticed that the map was deliberately lightened by NASA to hide the details. So I added some contrast and the things started popping out. Adding too much light, making photos black and white and also using false color (mars photos) to confuse the public so that we don't notice the alien artifacts on the surface of the moons and planets. But once you become use to this...its easy to focus it and restore the photo to its original glory most the time.
This UFO is parked in a crater, where most the UFOs I find on planets and moons are commonly found. The crater is about 25km by 35km more or less and that would make the size of this spaceship 5km from wing tip to wing tip. It could easily carry tens of thousands of passengers. It's like a small city inside this craft.
Can you imagine what Elon Musk would say if he knew about this craft? I bet it would be, "I'll get there in 30 days." But I'm sure Elon Musk gets alot of alien tech from DARPA program. They leak it out bit by bit to get it into the public sectors. I think even President Biden has no clue to the existence of this alien spacecraft and others out there. Even US presidents are kept on a need to know basis about aliens and alien tech.

UFO sightings have increased dramatically ever since the pandemic began and I might add...the UFOs have been getting stranger and stranger looking. This one was spotted over a shopping area of Richland Hills, Texas and if you look carefully you will notice that its darker on both ends, yet lighter in between. It also rotates on end. What odd is its out during the daytime...and its allowing itself to be seen uncloaked. It's very possible this object is hovering over a location that is of particular interest to it. Maybe a hospital or residence of a person infected with covid...with a special immunity or reaction never before seen. Something important sits below this UFO.

Capitol Hill lawmakers said Wednesday that UFOs could pose a pressing threat to America’s national security, as the pols emerged from a highly classified briefing with Navy and FBI officials on the unexplained phenomena.
As for the existence of extraterrestrial life, the lawmakers largely left the secrets inside the surveillance-proof room, declining to tell reporters what they learned.
But some did voice concerns that the UFOs — which may be espionage assets controlled by America’s foreign adversaries, in a possible explanation just slightly less terrifying than the vanguard of an alien invasion — could pose a danger to national security.

“We take the issue of unexplained aerial phenomena seriously to the extent that we’re dealing with the safety and security of US military personnel or the national security interests of the United States, so we want to know what we’re dealing with,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY).
“I think it’s important to understand that there are legitimate questions involving the safety and security of our personnel, and in our operations and in our sensitive activities, and we all know that there’s [a] proliferation of technologies out there,” he continued. “We need to understand the space a little bit better.”
Added Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), “You know it’s always about our safety and security — our national security is [priority] number one — and so that’s really the area where we really focused on this morning.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the committee chairman, implied that the briefing was eye-opening, but also declined to get into specifics ahead of the release of a public report.
“It was an interesting briefing,” he said. “I did learn things that were certainly new to me. But I think I’m going to leave it at that.”
Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.), who has been heading efforts on the UFO inquiry, said Americans should expect an eventual public hearing on the report’s findings.
“We’re looking forward to having a public hearing at some point,” he said. “I mean, there’s some national security concerns that we want to take into consideration.”

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) said that, if anything, the landmark report shows that UFOs are finally being taken seriously.
“The stigma is gone,” he said. “Now that’s as big a change in policy as I’ve witnessed about this issue in my lifetime. So the fact that they are taking this sort of thing seriously for the first time, I think, is important.”
Referencing the 1997 sci-fi flick “Contact” — adapted from a Carl Sagan novel — Quigley admitted that the report won’t have all the answers and that some things remain unexplainable.

“What do they say in ‘Contact’? Occam’s razor,” he said. “I still think that’s what’s real, and there are things we can’t explain.”
But with so many mysteries of the universe still beyond human understanding, Quigley cautioned Americans against getting their hopes up for the report.
“If I had to predict how the public will react to this, one word would be ‘disappointing,'” he said.

President Biden has been in office less than a year but now, in the midst of grappling with the coronavirus and with a wealth of other issues on his plate, he is facing perhaps the biggest question of all: are we alone?
The idea that we may share our universe with alien life is far from new, and there have been regular sightings of UFOs — Unidentified Flying Objects — for decades.
But these have, until recently, been dismissed as hoaxes, or misinterpretations of natural phenomena.
Despite Hollywood’s enthusiasm for the subject, the U.S. Defense Department has always downplayed the significance of such reports and sightings.
Now, however, no less a figure than Barack Obama has raised the stakes by admitting on The Late Show that, when President, he asked whether there was a lab somewhere ‘where we’re keeping the alien specimens and spaceships?’

The answer was no, but he did acknowledge the existence of objects without an ‘easily explainable pattern’.
His comments come days after U.S. fighter pilots revealed seeing Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) off the coast of Virginia ‘every day’ for two years.
The idea of the government secretly investigating sightings of UFOs and other strange incidents has long been thought to belong to the realms of Hollywood or TV: it’s no mistake that The X-Files, featuring a secret organisation dedicated to such other-worldly phenomena, was described as a science fiction drama.
No longer. Once a preoccupation of hardcore sci-fi fans, UAPs (or UFOs) are now being taken extremely seriously at the very heart of government.
Easy as it may be to discount sightings and photos of UFOs by civilians, video footage and pictures taken by U.S. Navy pilots between mid-2014 and March 2015 that emerged three years ago could not be dismissed so easily.
Barack Obama has raised the stakes by admitting on The Late Show that, when President, he asked whether there was a lab somewhere ‘where we’re keeping the alien specimens and spaceships?’ The answer was no, but he did acknowledge the existence of objects without an ‘easily explainable pattern’
They showed a 30 to 40ft object, shaped like a Tic Tac, with no wings or rotors, yet able to hover, turn and accelerate through the sky at hypersonic speeds. The flabbergasted Navy pilots can be heard exclaiming in awe: ‘Oh dude!’
The footage was leaked to the New York Times, whose report also revealed the existence of a shadowy organisation based at the Pentagon dedicated to reports of UFO sightings, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program — AATIP.
Its $22million budget was buried within the defence department’s £600billion a year funding.
The titles of some of the studies conducted by AATIP read like something out of an episode of Star Trek: Invisibility Cloaking; Traversable Wormholes, Stargates And Negative Energy; Warp Drive, Dark Energy And The Manipulation of Extra Dimensions; and Metallic Spintronics.
But its work was shrouded in secrecy and its former head, Luis Elizondo, resigned in 2017 in protest at this cloak-and-dagger approach.
The UK has been similarly secretive about UFO sightings, although the Ministry of Defence did at least set up a department dedicated to otherworldly phenomena, which I headed from 1991 to 1994, earning myself the name ‘Real Life Fox Mulder’, after The X-Files detective played by David Duchovny.
This department was eventually wound up, but the sightings have continued and — as in the U.S. — while many can be discounted, there are some that have no reasonable, scientific explanation.
The pressure is now on the U.S. Defense Department to go public with what it knows about UFOs and what the implications are for national security.
The leaking of the pilots’ footage prompted it to announce in 2020 the establishment of an Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF), led by the Navy.
The stated mission of this body was ‘to detect, analyse and catalogue UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security.’
The Senate Intelligence Committee — which oversees the tangle of 18 or more departments and organisations dedicated to intelligence-gathering in the U.S. — last year demanded a report on UFOs.
It is due next month, and it will be unclassified, although I suspect they will hide anything deemed too sensitive and secret within a classified annex to the report.
Certainly the government can no longer get away with dismissing those who have reported sightings of UFOs as cranks. If they know what these strange phenomena are, then they should be transparent, and tell us. And if they don’t — well, then we really do have reason to worry
Although this material too could be leaked. There has already been a great deal of leaking of photographs, official footage and documents relating to these unexplained sightings, notably the Navy pilots’ footage, and of other documents doing the rounds.
It is the existence of this information that has made it impossible for the government to deny or debunk such sightings and refuse to investigate them — as they have done since the 1960s.
What might the report contain? I believe there are three possible theories behind the strange sightings.
The first is that these strange aircraft are a U.S. ‘black project’ technology — a secret weapon developed by the U.S. Air Force that it is blind-testing against the Navy, to determine its efficacy.
After all, one unanswered question has been: where is the Air Force in all this? They have been strangely quiet, given that it is an issue about aircraft and airspace.
In this scenario, everything about UFOs is just a deception operation. The second theory is that the craft involved are secret prototype aircraft or drones operated by Russia or China — a troubling explanation, given the capabilities observed by the Navy pilots.
The third possibility is that we are in unknown territory — this would include the extraterrestrial hypothesis, or even a strange atmospheric plasma phenomenon that looks like an aircraft.
The Defense Intelligence Agency seems to want to play down the extraterrestrial theory but it is interesting to note that among the footnotes to the letter to Congress is a reference to a study of the Drake Equation, designed by the astronomer Frank Drake to calculate how many non-human civilisations there might be.
I sincerely hope that the intelligence community co-operates with the Senate report and gives us some idea of what we are dealing with. If we don’t know what it is, we cannot take defensive measures against it, if necessary.
And I trust that the findings — even the classified ones — will be shared with the UK, its closest defence ally.
Having studied unexplained sightings for many years, not only in my role at the MoD, but as the author of several books about such phenomena, including an investigation into the UK’s Rendlesham Forest Incident in 1980, about the landing of UFOs there witnessed by U.S. airmen, I believe that unexplained objects in our skies cannot simply be ignored.
My understanding is that there are disagreements within the defence and intelligence services about what it is that we are dealing with, and what steps we must take. For so many years scepticism and secrecy have prevailed. Now, at last, we are beginning to see some transparency.
But what we have learned so far is, I believe, just the tip of the iceberg. If these are the videos and pictures that have been leaked, how many more sightings are going on that we are not seeing? I suspect a lot.
Other pictures are emerging, captured on phones — one recently recorded an unidentified object disappearing into the ocean.
The U.S. Navy has even issued guidance to its pilots about what to do if they encounter these mysterious aircraft.
They wouldn’t bother doing that if there had been three or four incidents. This suggests ongoing encounters.
This could just be one of those interesting instances where conspiracy theorists turn out to be right. Not about aliens — I don’t think little green men are about to descend on us — but about the unexplained aircraft.

Our panel discusses the new interest in these mysterious sightings.

I’m an astronomer at the Seti Institute, a non-profit research organization in California’s Silicon Valley. My colleagues and I look for extraterrestrial life, including intelligent beings – or in the vernacular, aliens. It’s exciting times for people like me, because extra-terrestrial life is being widely discussed now in the lead-up to the Pentagon’s highly anticipated report on so-called unexplained aerial phenomena.
Yet I should say straight away that I am not expecting any big revelations out of the report. I think it’s overwhelmingly likely that aliens are present in our galaxy. But I don’t believe they’re hanging out in our airspace. Not now, and not in historic times.
Everyone is now serious about UFOs. But they reveal more about earthling politics
Claims that extraterrestrials helped build large, pointy monuments in the Egyptian desert 5,000 years ago are, frankly, laughable. And I don’t think that videos made by cameras on navy F-18 Hornets actually show alien craft darting around the skies above the Pacific. There are more prosaic explanations for these videos: no extraterrestrials required.
But in a galaxy in which every third star is likely to host an Earth-size planet, it hardly seems possible that our world is the only one sporting intelligence. Which raises the possibility that we might someday make contact. If that occurs, what might the inhabitants of other worlds be like? The question is especially relevant if – as often happens in science-fiction – the aliens decide to pay us a visit.
If extraterrestrials come to Earth, the ensuing scenario would be quite different than picking up an alien radio signal or detecting a flashing laser in the sky, modes of discovery being pursued by my colleagues and myself. The aliens producing such signals will be light years away, and their appearance and intentions wouldn’t be of much concern. But those of anyone landing their spacecraft on our turf would be.
Consider their looks. On Earth, nature has spawned a wide variety of living forms, and presumably would do so anywhere multicellular life exists. All terrestrials have DNA blueprints, and share similarities in molecular makeup. Nonetheless, few of our fellow Terrans resemble us. The extraterrestrials wouldn’t either.
This argues against the iconic aliens of film and TV, those little gray guys who are no more than modified humans. Their four appendages, upright stance, and absence of body hair are simple extrapolations of ourselves. Yes, Hollywood offers up these beings as residents of faraway worlds. But really they’re just the guy next door, lacking in eyebrows and whites in their eyes.
Any aliens that trek to our planet are unlikely to be carbon-based life forms, either hirsute or hairless. Their cognitive abilities will probably not be powered by a spongy mass of cells we’d call a brain. They will probably have gone beyond biological smarts and, indeed, beyond biology itself. They won’t be alive.
The reason is a simple consequence of the staggering distances to the stars. Even the nearest, Proxima Centauri, is 25tn miles from Earth. Our fastest rockets would take 75,000 years to reach it. Neither humans nor Klingons are built to withstand such trips.
You might be thinking that the aliens might have far speedier spacecraft. Without doubt, that’s possible. But there are natural limitations to high-speed rockets. Suppose that an alien would like to cover the distance between Proxima Centauri and Earth in 10 years. Their rocket would need to muster 600m times as much energy as a Saturn V rocket. Double that number if they plan to come to a stop at Earth and engage with the locals.
This may sound like an annoying practical matter that can be dismissed by noting that aliens could be far more advanced than us. And that’s easily possible: The universe is three times the age of our solar system, so the Galaxy may house societies that are millions or even billions of years ahead of Homo sapiens. Nevertheless, while their technology might be in a different league, the aliens must operate under the same laws of physics. Star Trek and similar scenarios aside, it’s extremely difficult to traverse light-years of space in less than a lifetime – anyone’s lifetime. You can call up Scotty in the engine room, but he won’t be able to help.
Traveling from one solar system to another is incredibly difficult and expensive. However, if you’re not in a hurry, the prospects for an interstellar voyage brighten considerably. Such leisurely trips aren’t going to appeal to biological passengers who will die long before their destination is reached. Machines, on the other hand, won’t complain if they’re cooped up in a spaceship for tens of thousands of years. They don’t require food, oxygen, sanitation or entertainment. And they don’t insist on a round-trip ticket.
Artificial intelligence aliens may not be as appealing as those who are warm-blooded and squishy, but we shouldn’t get hung up on an anthropocentric viewpoint. Researchers who work in AI estimate that machines able to beat humans on an IQ test will emerge from the labs by mid-century. If we can do it, some extraterrestrials will have already done it.
Therefore it’s reasonable to expect that any cosmic intelligence paying us a visit will be synthetic. That rules out easy speculation on what the “aliens” will look like. But if it’s a machine, who cares?
Of greater concern would be its intentions. Most sci-fi stories postulate that visitors would be noxious, arriving with a primal urge to obliterate Los Angeles or London. Frankly, if that’s what’s on their mechanical minds, it’s probably impossible to keep them at bay. Chimps couldn’t outsmart humans in any serious confrontation. Likewise, devices who can manage a trip to Earth will have the capability to do whatever they wish once they get here.
It’s a sure bet that any face-to-face encounter with extraterrestrials will be fraught. So, if alien craft ever do settle on the White House lawn, you can hope that whatever’s inside is friendly. If not, there’s always negotiation.

Former NASA astronaut Colonel Terry Virts spent over seven months in space on the International Space Station, where he captured the reality of his experience through photography. Virts has famously taken more photos from space than any other human, having taken over 300,000 spectacular images.
He is one of the stars of the IMAX film, "A Beautiful Planet," and is the director of the documentary, "One More Orbit." He is also the author of the National Geographic photography book, "View From Above," as well as his latest book, "How to Astronaut."
We caught up with Virts and asked him a few questions about how space travel has changed his perspective about issues down here on Earth and what his main goals are for his podcast. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Space.com: Would you say you've gained a new perspective of Earth after being in space?
Terry Virts: I think so, yes. People ask, "How did you change?" I've thought about this and I think the way it changed me is I'm less of a black and white person. The older you get, the more wisdom you have and you're like, "Yes, there's probably two sides to everything, and you really should look at the data before you come to a conclusion."
We used to be stuck on Earth, everything was two dimensional, everything was north, south, east and west right? Then once we started flying, all of a sudden there was this third dimension. Now we have the Hubble Space Telescope and these telescopes that are really looking in four dimensions — they're not only seeing things that are far away, they're seeing things that are really old, back billions of years old.
Space photography has changed everything. People like you and me just grew up with it, like that was normal. One of the pictures I had when I was younger was from Viking which was the first American lander on Mars. A hundred years ago we barely had airplanes so it's amazing how quickly our perspectives have changed.
Space.com: What inspired you to start your own podcast? Is it something you've been wanting to do for a while?
Virts: A couple of years ago I was writing blogs, and then I started writing books so my extra bandwidth went from blogs to books. I do podcast interviews all the time and I did this one in the U.K. It's an aviation podcast called EVA, and it was great, and the producer afterwards was like, "Terry, that was amazing, you need to do your own podcasts," and so we spent a few months talking about it and then I just did it.
The thing is, I know so many cool people from totally random different backgrounds.
Space.com: Like who?
Virts: My first guest was Larry Kopald from The Carbon Underground, we talked about how to get carbon out of the air back underground. My second guest was Eric Berger, this really well known space reporter at Ars Technica. I talked to astrophysicist Katie Mack about the end of the universe.
I just talked to Chris Mellon, who is a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence and ran the Senate intelligence committee. A very serious, senior U.S. security official, and [we talked] about UFOs and that blew my mind. Afterward, my producer and I were just staring at each other like, "What do we do with that? That was unbelievable!"
Space.com: What are your goals with the podcast?
Virts: The goal is to talk about things that matter in an honest way.
And so we'll talk about quantum mechanics or how to land on Mars or why gun violence is so awful or how to solve the climate problem or are UFOs real. We will talk about how we are going to get out of this debt and the political divisions that we have.
All this stuff matters, some of it is interesting, some is important, some is critical. As you can tell, I have a pretty wide interest but I think that's just how my brain works.

FAA Reports 10,000 UFO Sightings
10,000 UFO/UAP reports
The Federal Aviation Administration has seen a dramatic increase in drone-related incidents, recording approximately 10,000 reports in the last five years. The War Zone has identified a substantial number of military encounters with unidentified aircraft among those reports, often in sensitive airspace. When I flew out of Langley Air Force Base, Virginia in 1967, we used to see them periodically. Navy divers told us they saw them under water moving at high speed around the coast. This was before drones existed.
FAA reports, while some of the incidents represent typical hazards associated with commercial drones, others are indicative of advanced capabilities, including the ability to fly at relatively high altitudes and to potentially operate in coordinated groups. More so, it is not just what’s happening, it is where it is happening that is so intriguing.

The incidents appear to have predominantly impacted the U.S. Navy and Air Force, with a pronounced geographic nexus off the coast of the southeastern United States, as well as another in the southwestern United States. Many of the incidents we identified occurred far out over the ocean in military training ranges that have become known for ongoing sightings of unusual aircraft. Notably, there were far fewer similar incidents reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in other areas that also host a great deal of military activity, such as off the West Coast or around Florida. Momentous UFO events are taking place for the first time UFOs are being treated with respect by our government telling us they are real like I told you in these Files for 25 years. Carol Rosin was the first woman corporate manager of Fairchild Industries and was spokesperson for Wernher Von Braun in the last years of his life. She founded the Institute for Security and Cooperation in Outer Space in Washington DC and has testified before Congress on many occasions about space-based weapons. I met Carol at the Disclosure Project at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. in May 2001 when we both testified. Carol is known for having helped start the movement to prevent the weaponization of space. Carol Rosin was a close friend of Wernher von Braun (23 March 1912 – 16 June 1977) was a German-born American aerospace engineer and space architect. Von Braun joined Fairchild Industries as a Vice President for Engineering and Development. Fairchild Industries was one of the aerospace contractors that was secretly involved in building a ring-shaped space station.
Von Braun was the leading figure in the development of the v-2 rocket technology in Nazi, Germany and a pioneer of rocket and space technology. While in his twenties and early thirties he helped design and co-developed the V-2 rocket at Peenemunde during World War II. He was also likely participating in the development of the Space Force.
Following the war, he was secretly moved to the United States, along with about 1,600 other German scientists, engineers, and technicians, as part of Operation Paperclip. He worked for the U.S. Army on an intermediate range ballistic missile program, and he developed the rockets that successfully launched the United States’ first space satellite Explorer! Michael E. Salla, Ph.D. wrote that Von Braun was committed to eliminating weapons in space as he convinced Rosin during the final years of his life, or was he a double agent secretly working for the Fourth Reich Antarctic Germans? In 1960, his group was assimilated into NASA, where he served as director of the newly formed Marshall Space Center and as the chief architect of the Saturn V heavy lift Launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo Spacecraft to the Moon
William Tomkins worked with him and NASA developing the Apollo Control Room. He announced that Germany had gained the secret of anti-gravity that was later used I the Space Fleet. He was aware of the various advancements in technology and the race to the Moon in competition with the Soviet Union. He was likely aware of the Hangar near Chicago where a false area of the Moon was set up and a movie made to show the landing on the Moon. The movie was made to insert a false narrative if the landing was not successful on the Moon.
I met Carol Rosin, a high-ranking manager at Fairchild Industries on several occasions. Each time she told me that Von Braun’s had been briefed of a False Flag Alien Invasion – a genuine warning or a Fourth Reich deception or other key forces wishing to take control of the world?
From 1974 – 1977, Werner Von Braun began privately telling, about a sequence of contrived global false flag scenarios of an extraterrestrial invasion, which would usher in a New World Order. The scheduled release of new information about UFOs may be part of the false flag scenario he warned about. The locking up of the country for the Chinese release of the Corona Virus may have been a test of how willing the country was to accept fear of danger and to stay inside, wear masks, etc. The next big fear is likely to be the sky is falling concerning meteorites, or an alien invasion is taking place.
Von Braun had been it the SS and knew how powerful Nazi propaganda against the Jews had been. He knew that a clever propaganda campaign controlled by the six companies that control the television media in the U.S. can carry out a false flag extraterrestrial invasion, just as they have ignored any threats from China. If the country was told that the extraterrestrials were now in control, stay inside so they don’t harm you, and listen to the news. What would Americans or the people of the world do?
The extent of the Fourth Reich in Red
It’s possible World Communist/Marxist Governments or the remnants of the Fourth Reich, have the UFOs and Direct Energy Weapons, media and computer technology to give Von Braun’s prediction capability. Von Braun a former Nazi SS officer would know about the existence of a breakaway Nazi colony in South America and Antarctica. We can assume his multiple warning was genuine and he had held high classified positions in our government, contact with German scientists in the Soviet Union and some contacts the Fourth Reich. If the people believe aliens are about to attack or global false flag “cards” such as asteroid impacts and extraterrestrial invasion, would lead to the militarization of space and usher in a New World Order.
After NASA made the decision to end the Apollo Program, Von Braun decided to retire on May 26, 1972, six months before the launch of Apollo 17, the last moon landing mission. He had been the Director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (1960-1972), where he led the largely German engineering teams designing the Saturn V rockets that would power the Apollo Program.
In return for its covert help through the Apollo program, the US military gained scientific assistance in its efforts to study and reverse engineer captured extraterrestrial technologies. Werner Von Braun was among a select group of Operation Paperclip scientists who were asked to evaluate the remains of the 1947 Roswell Crash.

Dr. Von Braun explained how he had been taken to the crash site and how the exterior of the space craft was not metal as we know it, but appeared to be made of something biological, like skin. There were alien bodies which were being kept in a medical tent near the UFO. The beings were small, very frail, and reptilian in nature. Von Braun compared their skin to rattlesnakes that he and his group had encountered at White Sands. Von Braun was puzzled by the nature of the debris. The material was very thin, aluminum colored, like chewing gum wrapping, unlikely to have traveled from another planet according to the scientist.
. German Paperclip scientists were helping the USAF study and reverse engineer alien technologies? During the 70s, industry was able to back engineer and build electromagnetic and torsion field propulsion systems that were put into newer craft.
Wernher von Braun’s Deathbed Warning reportedly admitted late in life that German humans have possessed anti-gravity / beam-energy technology since WWII…Von Braun also pointed out in the 70’s that humanity could now easily convert to a long-suppressed, free-energy technology at any time”.
I net Carol Rosen at various conferences where she always emphasized Von Braun’s False Flag Alien Invasion that some group would use it to put weapons in space. There is strong evidence that the weapons do in fact exist aboard various objects in space.
1989 Soviet Attack Possible False Flag

Ronald Reagan liked to say, “God has a plan for everything.” He and Nancy were expected at a casual dinner party with friends in Hollywood when they were first married and showed up a half hour later quite upset. “They stated that they had seen a UFO coming down the coast.”
In 1974, California Governor stated, “I was in a plane last week when I looked out the window and saw this white light. It was zigzagging around.” “I went up to the pilot and said, “Have you ever seen anything like that?” He was shocked and he said, “Nope.” And I said to him: “Let’s follow it!” “We followed it for several minutes. It was a bright white light.” “We followed it to Bakersfield, and all of a sudden to our utter amazement it went straight up into the heavens.”
When he became President, he frequently discussed UFOs with his staff, and received numerous reports on sightings, and made frequent references to UFOs in his speeches.
On September 28, 1981, President Reagan received a letter from Colonel Ret. Colman VonKeviczky, Director of the International UFO Galactic Spacecraft Research and Analytic Network (ICUFON) that claimed UFOs were an intergalactic task force that will destroy earth unless world leaders’ band together to end their hostile actions against UFOs.”
Chief Advisor of the White House, Major General Robert Schweitzer replied, “The President is well aware of the threat you document so clearly and is doing all in his power to restore the national defense margin of safety as quickly and prudently as possible.” Dated November 21, 1981.
General Douglas MacArthur also spoke of “an ultimate conflict between a united human race and the sinister forces of some other planetary galaxy.
On December 4, 1985, Reagan made a speech at Fallston High School in Maryland talking about his meeting in Geneva where in five hours of private conversations with Soviet Premier Gorbachev he had brought up the alien scenario:

“I couldn’t help but – when you stop to think that were all God’s children, wherever we live in the world, I couldn’t help but say to him (Gorbachev) just how easy his task and mine might be if suddenly there was a threat to this world from some other species from another planet outside in the universe. We had forgot all the little local differences that we have between our countries, and we would find out once and for all that we really are all human beings here on this Earth together. Well, I guess we can wait for some alien race to come down and threaten us, but I think that between us we can bring about that realization.”
Reagan showed his perception of UFOs at the United Nations General Assembly September 21st, 1987, when he stated, “In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to make us recognize this common bond. I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet, I ask you,” he went on, “is not an alien threat already among us? What could be more alien to universal aspirations of our peoples than war and the threat of war?”
Was Regan considering creating his own false flag alien invasion on the Soviet Union?
President Reagan apparently developed a plan to defeat the USSR, and Communism that he called the Evil Empire. A key part of the plan was the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) announced in 1983 and called the “Star Wars” defense system that could destroy Soviet missiles and probably UFOs. Reagan proposed a complex set of defensive lasers and missiles intended to shoot down Soviet IBCMs. He even offered the defense system to the Soviets.
Whether inspired through his conversations with President Reagan, or through information provided by his own intelligence, Gorbachev had his own interest in UFOs.

On February 16, 1987, in an important speech, at a conference at Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow on the “Survival of Humanity,” Gorbachev stated, “At our meeting in Geneva, the U.S. President said that if the earth faced an invasion by extraterrestrials, the United States and the Soviet Union would join forces to repel such an invasion. I shall not dispute the hypothesis, although I think it is early yet to worry about such an intrusion. It is much more important to think about the problems that have entered in our common home.”
Hundreds of reports of abductions were reported in the Soviet Union, astronauts were reporting UFOs, fighters were being launched to chase them, and while rumors persist Gorbachev himself was visited by an alien and given a stern warning.
Not generally known is that the Soviet Union under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev prepared and nearly carried out a nuclear attack on the United States according to two Soviet KGB Colonels “At the age of 54, Gorbachev was elected to the General Secretariat by the Politburo on 11 March 1985. This was the beginning of a series of fundamental Soviet reforms”.
President Reagan ordered a massive buildup of the United States Armed Forces in 1981, directing funding to the B-1 Lance bomber, the B-2 Spirit bomber, cruise missiles, the MX missiles, and the 60 ship Navy.
Reagan and Gorbachev
In response to Soviet deployment of the SS-20, long range nuclear missiles and a potential alien threat. The Strategic Defense Initiative dubbed Star Wars was first proposed by President Ronald Reagan in a nationwide television address on March 23, 1983. The idea was to block nuclear missiles and allegedly attack alien craft and after several years was meeting initial success. In June 1987, American president Ronald Reagan stood at the Berlin Wall and demanded that Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev “Tear down this wall!”

Gorbachev agreed that the nations of the world would fight together. The Soviet Union’s first step in the end of the Cold War came when Mikhail S. Gorbachev implicitly abandoned the Brezhnev Doctrine. On 14 April 1988, the Governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan, with the United States and Soviet Union serving as guarantors, signed an agreement known as the Geneva accords. This included five major documents, which, among other things, established a timetable that ensured full Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan by 15 February 1989. Gorbachev was secretly preparing and nearly launched an attack on the United States.
Gorbachev demanded that the retreat be orderly and dignified — he did not want television images reminiscent of the chaotic 1975 US pullout from Vietnam. “We must not appear before the world in our underwear or even without any,” he told the Politburo inner circle. “A defeatist position is not possible.” The withdrawal was intended as a sign of conciliation toward the West and reassurance to the East Europeans, but it encouraged others to challenge Soviet power.
In 1989, one-fourth of the entire Soviet population was engaged in military activities and preparing for a possible strike at the US. Soviet Bloc countries were threatening to escape Soviet leadership and war would likely keep them in line. I believe Gorbachev decided to take a chance and see if the US defense was down. The Inauguration of George H. W. Bush as the 41st President of the United States was held on Friday, January 20, 1989. Bush might easily be fooled concerning Soviet attentions and quickly surrender to a surprise attack.
Typhoon Class Nuclear Sub the largest ever built
The Soviet Navy was a large part of the Soviet Union’s strategic plan in the event of a conflict with the opposing superpower, the United States; Soviet Navy had 63 ballistic missiles submarines.
These Soviet subs generally carry 16 missiles, and many are multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs) that if launched could have hit key military installations and cities in a few minutes after launch and likely succeed before the SDI Star Wars was operational.
The Soviet Unions also had 72 cruise missiles submarines and 64 nuclear attack submarines plus bombers and Intercontinental missiles. It had the older III/IV SSBNs that carry 16 of the older Sineva Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles with a range of up to 5,100 miles with a full payload. It is reported that the Sineva missiles have been upgraded to the new Layner standard, a highly advanced derivative of the Sineva, which carries up to 12 MIRVs (warheads can be of a mixed set with various yields).
Normally four of five Soviet nuclear missile submarines came on station near the U.S. shores. After several months on station the missile subs would be replaced by more subs and the initial subs would return to the Soviet Union. However, the initial subs did not return, and the additional subs came on station in the spring of 1989. Soviet military forces had now left Afghanistan in January of 1989 and were now ready to launch an attack on NATO… Fortunately the airborne Sub tracker aircraft were on station looking for the Soviet subs.

VP-64 t Orion P-3 Aircraft of the Naval Reserve unit from Willow Grove Naval Air station near Philadelphia allegedly were the first units to spot the Soviet buildup. They noticed the subs on station were not returning while there was a buildup of the new subs. Also, Soviet subs were spotted off the Florida coast. Twenty Soviet subs on each coast could launch 320 nuclear missiles plus MIRVs hitting multiple targets with only a few minutes warning. Long range missiles could knock out key Minuteman missiles and nuclear equipped bombers in a fifteen-minute attack before the US could respond. The Soviet attack submarines would hope to knock out US Polaris missile subs near the Soviet Union.
Once key military installations were knocked out in the US, it was doubtful NATO forces would put up much of a fight. Large Soviet underground facilities would protect most of the Soviet population if some retaliatory missiles got thru. If the numerous subs were not detected the US would likely surrender.
Once the alarm was sounded large US Navy forces of dozens of P-3s and attack helicopters and naval vessels moved into hover over the Soviet submarines. US attack subs had followed several of the Soviet subs across the Atlantic Ocean and a picture of the Soviet intentions developed. Gorbachev felt if the subs had not been detected most key military bases in the US could be destroyed before the US could retaliate. Fortunately, the subs were tracked by Orion Aircraft and US attack submarines and the Soviet Union gave up their secret attack plan and a nuclear was averted.
UFO Crash After Being Shot Down
According to the “Secret KGB UFO files” TV program UFO craft were discovered after crashing possibly after Soviet intercepts. UFOs were swarming over the Soviet Union in an apparent response to the Soviet failed attack.
Besides numerous abduction scenarios, UFOs were destroying key Soviet installations, and intercepts of Soviet communications indicated fighters were being launched to ward off further UFO attacks. General Igor Malsev, Chief of the General Staff for Air Defense Forces (PVO), admitted that over a hundred observations of UFOs had been reported to him, mostly by pilots, on March 21, 1990. The Soviets were overly concerned about the attacks and the new threats provided by UFOs.

In May 1990, shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union Gorbachev made a second more direct statements about UFOs. “The phenomenon of UFOs does exist,” he stated, “and it must be treated seriously.”
According to filmmaker and Russian ufologist Dr. Vladimir Avinsky, on September 13, 1990, just after midnight a Soviet radar station near Samara was attacked by a black triangular shaped UFO. It was about 50 feet in length on each leg of the triangle. A fire stated and the radar antennae seemed to melt. These extraordinary events were reported in the Red Star Military Newspaper. Dr. Avinsky provided these drawings of the attack.

According to Timothy Good in his excellent new book “Need to Know” on September 28, 1990, cosmonauts on board the Mir Space station saw a UFO over Newfoundland. Astronaut Gennadi Manakov states, “It was a great, silvery sphere and it was iridescent at 22:51 hours. It was much larger than a huge ship and had a regular shape, but what it was I don’t know, perhaps an enormous, experimental sphere, or something else“. snip
Officially it is stated the Soviet Union collapsed because of economic problems, but from its beginning it always had serious financial problems and its huge oil production was coming online. I suggest UFOs participated in the collapse of the Soviet Union to protect their interests.
Boris Yeltsin came to power on June 12, 1991, and was elected president of Russia becoming the first popularly elected president, and completing the fall of the Communist USSR and essentially ending the Cold War.
According to two Soviet KGB Colonels I met the Extraterrestrials were well as where of the Soviet plans and may have helped in uncovering the Soviet planed attack The aliens have a strong dislike for nuclear war in that it may make living on the planet intolerable. Shortly after the failed attack the Soviet Union was attacked almost nightly by triangle shaped craft and key installations were destroyed. According to the KGB Colonels, Gorbachev was visited by Exterrestrials who told him the world cannot have two Superpowers ready to destroy the Earth and the Soviets had been chosen to in effect to surrender and dissolve the Soviet Union. The failed attack was the momentum for various Soviet Bloc countries to start to withdraw from Soviet rule and suddenly the Soviets seemed weak and unwilling to occupy its Soviet Bloc nations as they had previously done in the past. By the summer of 1989 Gorbachev’s domestic reforms had run into serious trouble. The centrifugal forces in the “outer empire” stimulated and accelerated those in the “inner empire”, as the Soviet republics sought sovereignty and then independence. As the center disintegrated and Gorbachev opened the political process with glasnost (openness), the old communist “barons” in the republics saw the handwriting on the wall and became nationalist.
Shortly after Poland’s electorate voted the Communists out of government in June 1989, Gorbachev announced that the Soviet Union would not interfere with the internal affairs of the Eastern European countries. By October, Hungary and Czechoslovakia followed Poland’s example. The second act of the drama began in the fall of 1989 with peaceful revolutions in Eastern and Central Europe (except Romania) and the fall of the Soviet “outer empire.”
On 09 November 1989, the East German Government opened the Berlin Wall. East Germany, the center of contention throughout the Cold War, was united with West Germany and integrated into NATO.
Collapse of Soviet Union Lost Numerous Nations and Area
As one historian noted, in Poland communism took ten years, in Hungary ten months, in East Germany ten weeks, and in Czechoslovakia ten days to disappear. In Romania — the bloody exception to the rule of peaceful transition — the end came with the execution of Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife on Christmas Day. The Eastern Bloc. Charter 77 (Czechoslovakia) Solidarity (Poland) Jeltoqsan (Kazakhstan) Braşov rebellion (Romania) January Events (Lithuania) The Barricades (Latvia) April 9 tragedy (Georgia) Black January (Azerbaijan). The collapse of the Warsaw Pact a year later plus the 1990 Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe [that substantially reduced Soviet superiority in conventional forces in Europe resulted in a stronger Western alliance — so strong that the US could redeploy forces from Europe to the Persian Gulf for use against Iraq.
President Bush and Yeltsin Declare End To Cold War
At the of Malta Summit on December 2 and 3, 1989, both the leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union declared the Cold War over. Taking place on December 2–3, 1989, just a few weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was their second meeting following a meeting that included Ronald Reagan, in New York in December 1988.
At the Malta Summit, new US President George HW Bush, announced that the superpowers had ‘buried the Cold War at the bottom of the Mediterranean.’
My history of the world is quite different than that of the news media. Perhaps the real history will be revealed some day.
In 1991, the two countries were partners in the Gulf War against Iraq a longtime Soviet ally. On 31 July 1991, the START I treaty cutting the number of deployed nuclear warheads of both countries was signed by Soviet General Secretary Gorbachev and U.S. President George Bush. However, many consider the Cold War to have truly ended in late 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
