(CNN) A NASA spacecraft that will deliberately crash into an asteroid is preparing to launch this week.
The DART mission, or the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, will lift off at 10:20 p.m. PT (1:20 a.m. ET) on November 23 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Live coverage of the event will air on NASA TV and the agency's site.
But the true test for this asteroid deflection technology will come in September 2022, when the spacecraft reaches its destination, to see how it impacts the motion of a near-Earth asteroid in space.
The mission target is Dimorphos, a small moon orbiting the near-Earth asteroid Didymos. This will be the agency's first full-scale demonstration of this type of technology on behalf of planetary defense. It also will be the first time humans have altered the dynamics of a solar system body in a measurable way, according to the European Space Agency.
Near-Earth objects are asteroids and comets with orbits that place them within 30 million miles (48 million kilometers) of Earth. Detecting the threat of near-Earth objects, or NEOs, that could potentially cause grave harm is a primary focus of NASA and other space organizations around the world.
Asteroid Didymos and its moon Dimorphos
In Greek, Didymos means "twin," which is a nod to how the asteroid -- nearly half a mile (0.8 kilometer) across -- forms a binary system with the smaller asteroid, or moon -- 525 feet (160 meters) in diameter -- that was discovered two decades ago. Kleomenis Tsiganis, a planetary scientist at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a member of the DART team, suggested that the moon be named Dimorphos, which means "two forms."

It's the perfect time for the DART mission to occur. Didymos and Dimorphos will be relatively close to Earth -- within 6,835,083 miles (11 million kilometers) -- in September 2022. The spacecraft will come speeding in at about 15,000 miles (24,140 kilometers) per hour, targeting Dimorphos, said Nancy Chabot, DART coordination lead at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland.
A camera on the spacecraft, called DRACO, and autonomous navigation software will help the spacecraft detect and collide with Dimorphos. DRACO is short for Didymos Reconnaissance & Asteroid Camera for OpNav.
The mission's aim is to deliberately crash into Dimorphos to change the asteroid's motion in space, according to NASA. This collision will be recorded by LICIACube, or Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids, a companion cube satellite provided by the Italian Space Agency. It's the Italian Space Agency's first deep space mission.
The briefcase-size CubeSat will travel on DART and then be deployed from it prior to impact so it can record what happens. Three minutes after the impact, the CubeSat will fly by Dimorphos to capture images and video.
The video of the impact will be streamed back to Earth, which should be "pretty exciting," said Elena Adams, DART mission systems engineer at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
"Astronomers will be able to compare observations from Earth-based telescopes before and after DART's kinetic impact to determine how much the orbital period of Dimorphos changed," said Tom Statler, DART program scientist at NASA Headquarters, in a statement. "That's the key measurement that will tell us how the asteroid responded to our deflection effort."
A few years after the impact, the European Space Agency's Hera mission will conduct a follow-up investigation of Didymos and Dimorphos.
While the DART mission was developed for NASA Planetary Defense Coordination Office and managed by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, the mission team will work with the Hera mission team under an international collaboration known as the Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment, or AIDA.
"DART is a first step in testing methods for hazardous asteroid deflection," said Andrea Riley, DART program executive at NASA Headquarters, in a statement. "Potentially hazardous asteroids are a global concern, and we are excited to be working with our Italian and European colleagues to collect the most accurate data possible from this kinetic impact deflection demonstration."
A mission of firsts
Dimorphos was chosen for this mission because its size is relative to asteroids that could pose a threat to Earth, but the double asteroid system itself is not a threat to Earth.
The spacecraft is about 100 times smaller than Dimorphos, so it won't obliterate the asteroid.
"This isn't going to destroy the asteroid, it's just going to give it a small nudge and deflect its path around the larger asteroid," Chabot said. This means there isn't a chance of changing the trajectory of the asteroid to make it more of a threat.
The fast impact will only change Dimorphos' speed as it orbits Didymos by 1%, which doesn't sound like a lot -- but it will change the moon's orbital period by more than a minute. That change can be observed and measured from ground-based telescopes on Earth.
Dimorphos completes an orbit around Didymos every 11 hours and 55 minutes. If the impact is successful, it will change that period by at least 73 seconds, said Andy Cheng, DART investigation team lead at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.
Measuring the momentum transfer between the spacecraft and Dimorphos will show how much is needed to change the course of an asteroid.
"If one day an asteroid is discovered on a collision course with Earth, then we will have an idea how much momentum we need to make that asteroid miss the Earth," Cheng said.
Planetary defense strategies
While there are currently no asteroids on a direct impact course with Earth, there is a large population of near-Earth asteroids -- more than 27,000 in all shapes and sizes.
"The key to planetary defense is finding them well before they are an impact threat," said Lindley Johnson, planetary defense officer at NASA Headquarters. "The principle with all of them is just to change the orbital speed of the asteroid just a small amount. Changing that speed of the asteroid in its orbit changes its orbit so in the future, it won't be in the same place it was going to be to impact the Earth."
Three years after the impact, Hera will arrive to study Dimorphos in detail, measuring physical properties of the moon, studying the DART impact and the moon's orbit.
This may sound like a long time to wait between the impact and follow-up, but it's based on lessons learned in the past.
In July 2005, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft launched a 815-pound (370-kilogram) copper impact into a comet, Tempel 1. But the spacecraft was not able to see the crater that resulted because the impact released tons of dust and ice. However, NASA's Stardust mission in 2011 was able to characterize the impact -- a 492-foot (150-meter) gash.
Together, the valuable data collected by DART and Hera will contribute to planetary defense strategies, especially understanding what kind of force is needed to shift the orbit of a near-Earth asteroid that may collide with our planet.
After analyzing the results of the mission, "this technique would be a part of a toolbox that we're starting to build of capabilities to deflect an asteroid," Johnson said.

De Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA en ruimtebedrijf SpaceX hebben om 7.20 uur Belgische tijd ruimtesonde DART, afkorting voor Double Asteroid Redirection Test, gelanceerd. DART zal een opmerkelijke test uitvoeren waarbij het opzettelijk tegen een ruimterots botst om te kijken of de koers ervan veranderd kan worden.

De sonde werd vanop de basis Vandenberg in Californië gelanceerd door een draagraket van het type Falcon-9 van SpaceX, het ruimtevaartbedrijf van Elon Musk. De eerste rakettrap keerde terug en landde keurig op het droneschip Of Course I Still Love You dat in de Stille Oceaan dobberde. Het was de derde missie van deze trap. De afscheiding van de tweede rakettrap vond om 08.17 uur Belgische tijd plaats. Twee uur later ontplooiden zich met succes de meer dan negentien meter lange zonnepanelen.
Aarde beschermen tegen naderende asteroïden
In oktober 2022 moet de sonde dan de asteroïde Dimorphos raken, die zich op elf miljoen kilometer van de aarde bevindt. Met de DART-missie, die ongeveer 330 miljoen dollar (290 miljoen euro) kost, hoopt de NASA inzicht te krijgen in de manieren waarop de aarde kan worden beschermd tegen naderende asteroïden. Hergebruik van raketonderdelen drukt daarbij de lanceerkosten.
Zoals de naam doet vermoeden, is het doel van de DART-missie tweeledig: de grote asteroïde Didymos met een diameter van 780 meter en de maan Dimorphos, een maan met een diameter van 160 meter die rond die andere asteroïde draait. Op die maan zal de sonde, die aan een snelheid van 24.000 kilometer per uur door de ruimte vliegt, tot stilstand komen. Vervolgens gaan de wetenschappers na of de maan door de impact een beetje uit haar baan rond Didymos wordt geslagen. Zoiets is nog nooit geprobeerd.
De bestemming Dimorphos vormt volgens de NASA geen bedreiging voor de aarde. “Het stelsel is een perfecte plek om te testen of het mogelijk is om de koers van een asteroïde te veranderen door er moedwillig een ruimtevaartuig op in te laten slaan”, aldus de organisatie. De sonde zal de asteroïde niet vernietigen, maar slechts een kleine schok toedienen. Als er ooit een asteroïde op ramkoers ligt met de aarde, hebben wetenschappers een idee hoeveel kracht nodig is om haar onze planeet te doen missen.
Ruwweg vier jaar na de impact zal het HERA-project van het Europese Ruimtevaartbureau ESA beide hemellichamen gedetailleerd observeren, met bijzondere aandacht voor de veroorzaakte krater en een precieze vaststelling van de massa van de maan. Op zijn beurt zal de sonde de Europese Cubesats Milani en Juventas uitzetten. HERA is zelf een Cubesat die 800 kilo weegt en in 2024 vertrekt. Het Belgische bedrijf Spacebel participeert toonaangevend in HERA. Het ontwikkelde de software voor de sonde en is ook verantwoordelijk voor de vluchtleiding die in Redu gevestigd zal zijn.
Hoe moet ik mij de DART-missie voorstellen?
Nog geen enkele dreiging
Voorlopig is er überhaupt nog geen enkele dreiging voor de aarde, benadrukt de ruimtevaartorganisatie. Rond de zon draaien miljarden asteroïden en kometen. Enkele tienduizenden daarvan zouden ooit een gevaar voor de aarde kunnen vormen, maar die komen in elk geval de komende honderd jaar niet bij ons in de buurt.
Since the 1980s, sightings of large, triangular-shaped UFOs, usually described as being black in color, making a low humming noise, and very often with rounded rather than angled corners, have been reported throughout the world. The sheer proliferation of such reports has led some ufological commentators to strongly suspect that the Flying Triangles (as they have come to be known) are prime examples of still-classified aircraft, the development of which was secretly begun in the 1980s by elements of the U.S. Department of Defense. Largely, UFO researchers are split into two camps: that the Flying Triangles are the creations of the American military or that have been flown by extraterrestrials. There is, however, another theory for all of this mystery. It’s a theory that pops up now and again; however. It is tied to the issue of nothing less than time-travel. I must stress that the theory was addressed in the early part of the 1990s, but faded away. The theory also kind of vanished into the woods – so to speak, and quite literally – of England’s Cannock Chase expansive woods.
The late Omar Fowler, a UFO expert who died in 2017, had a theory that the so-called Flying Triangles just might be nothing less than the aerial vehicles of time travelers. Fowler had a good reason for that. On one occasion, in September 1992, over a large area of woodland in central England called the Cannock Chase, Omar secured a piece of testimony from a man named Alan Ball. He agreed to meet Ball on the Chase one morning. Incredibly, Ball claimed that he was taken on-board a huge, black, Flying Triangle late one night – and while he was driving home – when he was “beamed into” the craft and subjected to a series of medical experiments by three small, humanoid figures in what “looked like a medical lab.”

Ten or fifteen minutes into the experimentation, Ball claimed that his mind was flooded by images of the U.K., in ruins. It was a definitive Armageddon: buildings, in all directions, were destroyed; charred human bodies lay everywhere; and it was clear that a nuclear event occurred. And the assumption was that the event was not alone. That the U.K. – and possible everywhere else – had been destroyed. After having the terrifying vision, Ball was dropped off the craft – literally, from a door about five feet above the woods. Ball was in a state of terror – and for several days. Particularly of interest is the fact that Fowler had in his files two extremely similar cases – and also at the Cannock Chase woods – of people taken onto Flying Triangles and exposed to images in their minds of a massive apocalypse. Fowler was still open on the idea that the Flying Triangles could be extraterrestrial in nature. However, he wasn’t able to shake off the disturbing possibility the craft were piloted by time travelers, and that what Ball and the two other people were seeing was a future still to come – and that all three victims had been taken to the future and then returned to in 1992. Should we consider those who pilot the Flying Triangles to be us, but from a faraway time?Maybe, so. To a degree, Omar Fowler did.

Admittedly, there is no reason why such a theory should be dismissed and tossed away. And, indeed, there is the intriguing fact that the Flying Triangles look like next-generation versions of our “Stealth” bombers and “Stealth” fighters. Moreover, the very fact that the FTs look like they came from our world – but from an Earth far ahead of us, time-wise – is yet another reason to think the Flying Triangles are flown by people just like us. Could they be historians? Looking to prevent us from destroying ourselves? The theories are many. The answers, though, are most definitely not.

Enorme schachtengordel bij Stonehenge wel degelijk gegraven door mensen
De grootste prehistorische structuur ooit gevonden in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Zo omschreven archeologen vorig jaar in juni de vondst van de merkwaardige kring van diepe schachten rond de oude nederzetting Durrington Walls, op zo’n drie kilometer ten noordoosten van Stonehenge. Sommige collega’s waren sceptisch, maar nieuw onderzoek toont aan dat de neolithische kuilen wel degelijk door mensen zijn gemaakt.
De sceptici deden vorig jaar smalend over de ontdekking en waren ervan overtuigd dat de putten, die een cirkel vormen met een diameter van twee kilometer, op natuurlijke wijze waren ontstaan. Maar dat is nu wetenschappelijk weerlegd: het zijn met zekerheid mensenhanden die de schachten hebben gegraven, zo’n 4.500 jaar geleden. Dezelfde periode waarin ook het prehistorische en mysterieuze stenen monument Stonehenge is opgetrokken.
Precies in het centrum van de enorme schachtengordel ligt de nederzetting Durrington Walls, wat doet vermoeden dat het een heilige plek was. De archeologische site ligt ongeveer 3 kilometer ten noordoosten van Stonehenge op Salisbury Plain, nabij Amesbury in Wiltshire.
Wetenschappers analyseerden negen schachten, bijna de helft van de 20 die werden gevonden. “Ze zijn allemaal hetzelfde”, zegt professor Vincent Gaffney van de universiteit van Bradford. “Dat betekent dus eigenlijk dat dit één enorme structuur is.” Elke kuil is ongeveer 10 meter breed en 5 meter diep. De wetenschap staaft de theorie dat de neolithische mensen die Stonehenge bouwden, ook dit monument hebben gegraven.
De ondergrondse cirkel, tot vorig jaar onbekend, is twintig keer groter dan Stonehenge. De ontdekking levert nieuw bewijs voor het vermoeden dat vroege bewoners van Groot-Brittannië, voornamelijk boerengemeenschappen, een manier hadden ontwikkeld om te tellen, door honderden passen af te leggen om de kuilen af te meten. Mogelijk had de begrenzing van de schachten een kosmologische betekenis, terwijl Stonehenge duidelijk in verband stond met zonnewendes.
Het grondonderzoek gebeurde met de nieuwste teledetectietechnologieën, die zelfs na duizenden jaren kunnen aanwijzen waar de grond is verstoord en toelaten te achterhalen wanneer sediment voor het laatst aan daglicht werd blootgesteld. Over de uitgevoerde testen zei onderzoeksleider Tim Kinnaird van de universiteit van St Andrew dat ze “onomstotelijk bewijzen dat de kuilen dateren van rond 2400 voor Christus”. Uitvoerige analyse in het laboratorium bevestigde verder dat “dit geen natuurlijke fenomenen waren”. Dan zouden ze verschillende afmetingen moeten hebben, zoals dat het geval is met zinkgaten. Volgens de onderzoeksdata werden de schachten gebruikt van de late steentijd tot de midden-bronstijd. Daarna liet men ze dichtslibben, aldus Kinnaird. Ze werden dus nog “na de monumentfase van Stonehenge onderhouden”.

This may appear as nothing to most people, but to me, it's 100% proof that UFOs exist near our sun. You see, nothing made in nature could make a hard right turn in space, and yet, we see that here. Clearly there is only a single explanation for it...that it's an intelligently controlled spacecraft. Thats why I recorded it and posted it here. In the twenty-first century, the world has been swamped with various accounts of extraterrestrial interaction with people on the planet Earth, and it has been suggested that there is perhaps too much information available for people to take the phenomenon seriously, particularly as so much of it is false.
According to several experts and conspirators, there are approximately 82 documented extra-terrestrial races that have developed direct or indirect communication with us. Proof such as declassified papers, photographs, and videos can be seen all over the world. Normally, while looking for any sort of evidence linked to extraterrestrial existence, we do this through three key channels. The first involves abductees and contactees, as well as observers to the UFO phenomena. The second arises from informants who might involve retired government employees or military officers.
Workers digging on the property of an old spinning factory in Turkey in an area that had not been used in over 30 years found a mysterious intact skeleton of a strange looking creature with long hind legs, short front ones, pointy nails instead of feet and extremely sharp teeth. Better yet (for investigators, at least), the skeleton had some flesh still intact. Dinosaur? Mutant? Or should we start the countdown … 3-2-1 … is this the first known skeleton of a Chupacabra (ignoring the fact that it was found in Turkey, not Texas or Puerto Rico)?
“We especially noticed that its hind legs are long. We informed the authorities that it might be an interesting species, since its feet are not hooves but nails and have sharp teeth. Controls will be carried out, we are also curious. I hope something interesting will come out and be useful to science.”
Sharp teeth did you say?
Yusuf Kıtay, the operating officer of the excavation, said the workers found the animal skeleton while they were working in an area that has not been used for the last 30-40 years outside a factory in Iğdır, a far eastern near the border with Armenia. The long-tailed skeleton was of a creature that would have stood about one meter (3.3 feet) tall and appears to have died recently. While the long hind legs might suggest it was a kangaroo, the head is the wrong shape entirely for it to be an Australian marsupial. Kitay did the right thing – he had the workers carefully remove the skeleton intact from the site and, after photographing it (a series of photos can be seen here), delivered the remains to the Iğdır University’s Biodiversity Application and Research Center.
It’s not THAT big
“Then we will ensure that this skeleton is preserved in a museum.”
So this is not just a deformed stray animal but something that is museum quality? That sounds strange. Which museum? Archeology World reports that Belkıs Muca Yiğit, a lecturer at Iğdır University, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that researchers there would attempt to identify the species of the animal and then donate it to a museum. That’s curious … it it’s an out-of-place animal like an escaped pet, why donate it to a museum? If it’s indeed the most well-preserved dinosaur skeleton complete with DNA-filled flesh, why not study it more? If it’s cryptid (note: there were no telltale dead livestock reported), why not announce the unique discovery in a three-part miniseries on some cable channel? And why have there been no further updates besides the initial report over a week ago? Is this the victim of some sort of radiation leak or worse – a strange experiment?

When we look at the Moon, we only see its one side. The other lunar hemisphere, known as the far side, or the dark side of the Moon, is always hidden from us. In 1969, the Apollo 10 astronauts heard something unusual on the far side of the Moon. Apollo 10 lost contact with the mission control and started receiving a mysterious radio signal.
This signal could not be from the Earth because Apollo was on the far side of the Moon, and no one on the planet could see or contact them. The astronauts heard the spooky sounds for about an hour until they emerged to the side of the Moon facing the Earth.
However, the astronauts did not report this to the mission control because they were scared and thought they would be grounded on mental health issues. For more than four decades, people believed that the mission went according to the plan. There was nothing weird about it. Then, finally, the incident came to light when the recorded transcripts were declassified. Now the question that everyone wanted an answer to was, What was there on the Moon’s far side?
Was someone really trying to contact the astronauts? What was the source of the unusual sounds? Before answering all these intriguing questions, let’s see what’s there on the far side of the Moon.

Recent UFO videos released by the US government tracking on infrared video a UFO...showed a UFO that tried to make a smoke trail in order to distract the military plane tracking it. Also in Sept 1957 a US Army private was on guard duty and took photos of a ring UFO...clearly showing the craft before during and after it made the clouds around it to hide within. Proof...we already have the proof.

These bright lights were seen in Virginia a few days ago. They appear similar to searchlights but should not be mistaken for them. Such lights have been seen over the ocean by sailers, where there was nothing but water. These lights flew intentionally and were recorded at 11 pm when most people would be home sleeping. I have confidence that these were actual alien craft.

This week a white orb was recorded flying over Paris this week. The orb seemed to glow even during the day and move as if it were intelligently controlled. Here’s one really interesting daytime footage of a huge UFO hiding in a clouds over Rome in Italy. It was taken on Snapchat as soon as the witness spotted it.
Scientists warn that without good biosecurity measures, 'alien organisms' on Earth may become a reality stranger than fiction.
Published in international journal BioScience, a team of scientists, including Dr. Phill Cassey, Head of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Adelaide, are calling for greater recognition of the biosecurity risks ahead of the space industry.
"In addition to government-led space missions, the arrival of private companies such as SpaceX has meant there are now more players in space exploration than ever before," said Associate Professor Cassey. "We need to take action now to mitigate those risks."
Space biosecurity concerns itself with both the transfer of organisms from Earth to space (forward contamination) and vice-versa (backward contamination). While the research points out that at present the risk of alien organisms surviving the journey is low, it's not impossible.
Dr. Cassey said: "Risks that have low probability of occurrence, but have the potential for extreme consequences, are at the heart of biosecurity management. Because when things go wrong, they go really wrong."
The research provides clear evidence of how humans have spread organisms to the remotest regions of the earth and sea, and even into space.
To address the risks of invasive species from space travel, the authors suggest the emerging field of 'invasion science', which deals with the causes and consequences of introducing organisms into new environments, could offer valuable learnings. This includes the fact that insular systems such as islands, lakes, and remote habitats, are most vulnerable to invasion threats.
Further insights that could be applied include protocols for early detection, hazard assessment, rapid response and containment procedures currently used in response to invasive species threats.
Dr. Cassey said: "It is far cheaper to prevent biological contamination by implementing protocols on Earth than it is on Mars, for example."
Both Dr. Cassey and co-author Dr. Andrew Woolnough from the University of Melbourne and the University of Adelaide suggest that with some of the best biosecurity in the world Australia is well-positioned to contribute expertise in this area.
"We have a fantastic opportunity to contribute to international policy and to develop biosecurity mitigation measures that can be used by the expanding private space industry. This is an untapped economic development opportunity," Dr. Woolnough said.
Despite the value to space biosecurity, the authors state that invasion biologists have yet to be involved in Committee on Space Research Planetary Protection planning. In the research they argue this should change because "greater collaboration between invasion biologists and astrobiologists would enhance existing international protocols for planetary biosecurity—both for Earth and for extraterrestrial bodies that could contain life".
One of the brutal truths about getting things off the Earth and into space is contained in something called The Tsiolkovsky rocket equation, which, to put it absurdly simply, means that most of the volume of a rocket leaving Earth will be needed for fuel. That’s why the rockets you see are huge towers of fuel and oxidizer with just a little area up top for the payload. A startup company calledSpinLaunchis hoping to work around this grim equation by spinning rockets really, really fast in a circle. That name may have given it away?
The process is known as “kinetic launching” and utilizes a huge electric motor-powered centrifuge called the Suborbital Accelerator, which looks kind of like a turbocharger the size of the Statue of Liberty.
The Suborbital Accelerator is a huge vacuum chamber (i.e. there’s no air to create aerodynamic drag) with a carbon fiber rotating-arm style centrifuge inside it. The arm spins the payload (which can include a second-stage rocket to potentially reach orbit) and then a high-precision mechanical release flings it out of that tube, where it then shoots out into space.

The current Suborbital Accelerator is about one-third the scale of the planned final one, and for this test the accelerator was only spun up to about 20 percent of its capacity, which was all that was needed to send the 10 foot test payload up those tens of thousands of feet.

Essentially, the big spinner is taking the place of a conventional rocket’s massive and fuel-thirsty first stage, allowing for much smaller rockets with much better fuel-to-payload ratios to be developed.

The company claims that adapting satellites and other space hardware for the high-G spinning process is no big deal:
This engineering process has been used to develop high-g reaction wheels for 20kg and 200kg-class satellites, deployable solar arrays and electric propulsion modules. Even unmodified smartphones, action cameras, and telescope lenses have survived without damage. In comparison to mechanical systems, electronics are surprisingly simple to ruggedize for kinetic launch. Because of the relatively low mass of resistors, capacitors, and electronic chips, many existing designs can be flown without any substantial modifications.
I suspect that this method wouldn’t be suitable for crewed launches, though.
The company has already raised about $35 million, and they have a Department of Defense launch contract, so maybe we’ll be seeing more things yeeted into earth orbit in this massive mechanical discus style.
An emissions-free space launch system will be popular as the world strives to become more environmentally friendly. SpinLaunch claims that in the future, it will be able to launch complete constellations of satellites into the atmosphere’s most mission-critical layers.
The corporation also notes that in the future, when vast numbers of people are flying into space, structures, equipment, and supplies will need to be launched.
That comment appears to imply that SpinLaunch envisions a future in which it will be able to launch items heavier than 440 pounds satellites. The launch system’s development began in 2015. SpinLaunch’s accelerator achieved a record for the fastest spinning tip speeds two years after the project began. However, the launch last month was the most significant milestone in the project’s history.
It is uncertain how big the orbital-class accelerator should be. The suborbital accelerator is 50.4 metres tall, and the orbital-class accelerator would definitely be far larger. To put things into perspective, the Statue of Liberty is 46 metres tall. SpinLaunch claims that their suborbital technology will be valuable in the long run as a satellite qualifying facility.
