Scientists, true believers gather for annual UFO symposium
Jorge Rigoboulos doesn't care if you don't believe him; he knows when he was a 10-year-old boy he saw a circular-shaped object with lights on it that flew across the sky.
"It was impressive because it was so close," the now-48-year-old said Saturday. "It is true what I saw."
It may have been the first time the Miami man saw an unidentified flying object in the sky, but he said it wasn't the last. Just four years, ago he says he saw another set of lights darting around the Florida sky, only reinvigorating his interest in the unknown.
"It's something that attracts me," Rigoboulos said.
He's not alone in his quest for information about what else—or who else—could live in this solar system or another dimension. Rigoboulos was one of nearly 500 people expected to attend the annual MUFON Symposium.
MUFON, short for the Mutual UFO Network, is a science-based organization that investigates and researches the phenomenon of the existence of aliens and their connection or contact with Earth.
This year's event, "UFOs: From our Oceans to Outer Space,"ends Sunday at the Hilton Lake Buena Vista Hotel near Walt Disney World.
Symposium attendees range from true believers and UFO enthusiasts to skeptics and those determined to debunk any finding of extraterrestrial life.
"Hollywood has always painted this as an X-Filey, sensationalized subject matter," said Morgan Beall, Florida's MUFON state director.
Beall said the importance of the event is to show attendees, including the skeptics, that the work being done isn't about the stereotypical big-eyed, green-skinned alien.
"There is that ridicule factor, that giggle factor that's still out there that shouldn't be because it's actually a very, very serious subject matter," he said. "And, if real, think of the implications."
Shari Gackstatter, owner of Tempe, Ariz.- based Star Woman Crystals, said the event is important to bring together like-minded people, giving them a safe space to discuss their beliefs without fear of judgment.
"I assume every single person has seen something in the sky that didn't make sense," she said. "To me, an intelligent person is going to assume there's more to everything that what we see."
Beall hasn't had any personal experience with extraterrestrials, either having an up-close encounter or seeing an object in the sky, but he knows scientists every day are learning more about the possibilities that humans aren't the only existing life form.
"And I think just putting it into perspective, we're a grain of sand in an ocean," he said. "And we're young compared to the rest of the universe."
Robert Powell, MUFON's director of research, said he's interviewed more than 200 people who've had some kind of experience with other-worldly beings, enough to believe there's something out there even if he hasn't seen it for himself.
Powell said he would love to have his own experience one day.
"In a way, it's really like winning the lottery because there's lots of UFO reports," said Powell. "But there's very few real UFO incidents for witnesses, right? Because people misinterpret what they see."

5. Rock Structure
This particular scene is imaged from the Spirit rover Panoramic camera on Sol 726 and the rover location is elevated just enough in the terrain to see some background behind the object and a little more of the terrain it appears to sit in. I include this scene here to provide general site context wider area terrain information and to demonstrate how alone and what a sharp stand out this object is in this terrain.
4. Face on Mars (Cydonia)
The Viking images presented us with a mesa and a reason to suspect artificiality – its seemingly improbable humanoid-face-like appearance. However, as is well known, face-like images sometimes appear in clouds, profiles of mountains, and various other random or visually noisy scenes. This is simply because remarkably regular patterns frequently arise by chance, even when the a priori odds are billions to one against that happening.
3. Monolith
The object in question was first spotted several years ago after being photographed by the HiRISE camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA space probe; every so often, it garners renewed interest on the Internet. But is it unnatural – a beacon erected by aliens for mysterious reasons, and even more mysteriously paralleled in the imaginations of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, creators of “2001”? Or is this rock the work of nature?
2. Humanoid Figure
NASA posted a photograph (PIA10216, Google it-same photo as the woman figure was found!) taken by the Mars Spirit Rover on their web site that bloggers around the world began scanning over carefully in order to catch anything that NASA may have accidentally let slip through. To everyone’s amazement some anonymous person in Asia did and posted it on the Internet causing widespread excitement over the possibilities of life existing on Mars.

Er zijn beelden opgedoken van een aantal grote UFO’s boven de enorme supervulkaan Yellowstone. Alien-jagers suggereren dat er mogelijk een buitenaardse basis in de vulkaan verscholen ligt.
In de wolken boven de supervulkaan in het Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, die al 70.000 jaar niet meer is uitgebarsten, lijkt een groot cilindervormig object met een doorsnee van meer dan 100 meter te zien te zijn.
Energie
Wetenschappers speculeren dat een uitbarsting van de vulkaan tot zo’n 10.000 sterfgevallen en een nucleaire winter kan leiden. UFO-jagers menen dat buitenaardse levensvormen energie onttrekken aan de vulkaan.
De ‘vloot’ vliegende schotels is gespot op livebeelden van het park. Volgens Jeanette Foresta, die de beelden op YouTube zette, is de video bewijs voor de aanwezigheid van buitenaardse wezens.
Op de hoogte
Foresta maakt wel vaker beelden van Yellowstone National Park, maar heeft nog nooit een filmpje over UFO’s geplaatst. Het beeldmateriaal is geanalyseerd door Scott C. Waring van de website UFO Sightings Daily.
“De Amerikaanse overheid is op de hoogte van het bestaan van een actieve buitenaardse basis of zelfs meerdere bases in het gebied,” claimt Waring, die speculeert dat het gebied om die reden is uitgeroepen tot nationaal park. “Ik leef voor dit soort filmpjes.”

SETI-onderzoekers zijn in de ban van radiosignalen die uit de richting van een zonachtige ster in het sterrenbeeld Hercules lijken te komen. Het gaat om de ster HD 164595, zo meldt GeekWire.
Het signaal komt overeen met het profiel van een boodschap afkomstig van een buitenaardse bron, maar het kan net zo goed gaan om radio-interferentie of een geval van microlensing.
Hoe dan heeft het signaal de interesse gewekt van de mensen die zich specialiseren in de zoektocht naar buitenaardse intelligentie, oftewel SETI, waaronder Paul Gilster, die het signaal afgelopen weekendonder de aandacht bracht.
Aantal redenen
Tenminste twee onderzoeksgroepen gaan HD 164595 nauwgezet volgen. Het SETI-instituut gebruikt de Allen Telescope Array in Californië terwijl METI International de Boquete Optical SETI Observatory in Panama inzet.
Het signaal is meer dan een jaar geleden, op 15 mei 2015, opgepikt door een Russische radiotelescoop in Zelentsjoekskaja, niet ver van de grens met Georgië.
De bron van het signaal, HD 164595, is om een aantal redenen interessant: het is een zonachtige ster op 95 lichtjaar van de aarde en er draait tenminste één ‘warme Neptunus’ rond de ster. “Er kunnen zich natuurlijk nog meer planeten in dit stelsel bevinden,” zei Gilster.
Wow!-signaal
Het signaal wordt al vergeleken met het mysterieuze Wow!-signaal dat in 1977 eenmalig werd opgevangen en KIC 8462582, die ook wel de meest mysterieuze ster in het heelal wordt genoemd. Na mei 2015 is het signaal niet meer gedetecteerd. Volgende maand gaan astronomen erover discussiëren op een bijeenkomst in Mexico.
“Dit object moet permanent gemonitord worden,” zeggen de onderzoekers die het signaal hebben ontdekt. Zij staan onder leiding van Nikolai Boersov van de Russische Academie van Wetenschappen.

The topic of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs), alongside the extraterrestrial hypothesis being one of multiple explanations for their appearance (which seems to be quite a common phenomenon), is an area of interest for many people that’s continually growing, and for good reasons. This is in large part due to the fact that we now have hundreds of credible witnesses that have officially testified to the reality of an extraterrestrial presence, and its relation to the already disclosed UFO ‘problem.’
This is why members of government, like John Podesta, Chief of Staff for Bill Clinton, Counsellor to Barack Obama and head of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign before she dropped out, stated that “the time to pull the curtain back on this subject is long overdue. We have statements from the most credible sources, those in a position to know, about a fascinating phenomenon, the nature of which is yet to be determined.”(You can find sources for this quote, and other statements made by Podesta on this matter in this article we published in February about him.)
“As the F-4 approached a range of 25 nautical miles it lost all instrumentation and communications. When the F-4 turned away from the object and apparently was no longer a threat to it, the aircraft regained all instrumentation and communications. Another brightly lighted object came out of the original object. Why It’s Time To Listen To Contactees, Abductees & Experiencers/ A Psychological Standpoint
Just to clarify, ‘contactees’ are usually those who have reported ‘friendly’ contact experiences with extraterrestrials, ‘abductees’ are those who have had what they perceive to be fearful experiences, and experiencers are those who neither view the experience as ‘good’ or ‘bad,” but simply just an experience. It’s important to note this, because various people have reported different types of experiences with different types of beings.

The reality is that some people who claim to have had contact with intelligent extraterrestrial beings actually have.
John Mack, A Harvard professor, psychiatrist and Pulitzer Price recipient stresses that:
“Yes, it’s both. It’s both literally, physically happening to a degree; and it’s also some kind of psychological, spiritual experience occurring and originating perhaps in another dimension. And so the phenomenon stretches us, or it asks us to stretch to open to realities that are not simply the literal physical world, but to extend to the possibility that there are other unseen realities from which our consciousness, our, if you will, learning processes over the past several hundred years have closed us off.” (source)
We published an article earlier this year regarding John Mack, and more than 60 school children witnessing non-human beings and a large craft landing. The children were interviewed by him, and it was quite a remarkable story with all of the children providing very similiar stories. Until this day these children have been speaking of it, an event occurred more than 20 years ago….

According to retired McGill University professor in the Department of Psychology (research areas beings cognition and cognitive Neuroscience), Dr. Don Donderi:
“Some of what people report as UFOs are extraterrestrial (ET) vehicles. Some of those extraterrestrial vehicles actually have ET crews, and some of those ET crews catch and release humans.” (source)
Academicians like these, and others like Richard Dolan, David M. Jacobs and more have been studying this phenomena for decades, and the reports of beings and examining why they are here, what they are doing, what they look like and more has been documented by their (and others) research.
What I find most fascinating about these stories is how many of them seem to compliment each other instead of contradicting each other, which just adds to the mystery.
As far as physical research goes:
“There are a great many photographs of such body marks, many of which are in an equilateral triangle pattern of red dots on the wrist or near the ankle. Also common are scoop marks,” in which it appears as if a small amount of tissue was removed from beneath the skin, leaving an indentation.” -Richard Dolan (taken from his book, UFOs for the 21st century mind)
Below is a clip of Dr. Roger Leir. a doctor of podiatric medicine, and arguably the best known individual with regards to extracting alleged alien implants. He has performed more than fifteen surgeries that removed sixteen separate distinct objects. These objects have been investigated by several prestigious laboratories, including Los Alamos National Laboratories, New Mexico Tech, and many others. Unfortunately, he passed away in March 2014, but his legacy lives on.
Truth is, as former NASA astronaut and Princeton Physics Professor puts it, “there is abundant evidence that we are being contacted, that civilizations have been visiting us for a vary long time.” (source)
**The information below is a very brief summary of a few of the most commonly reported extraterrestrials based on all of the research I’ve done on this subject.
Human Looking Extraterrestrials
Extraterrestrials with features drastically similar to human beings have reported by contactees, abductees and experiencers for a long time. This type of experience is actually quite common. Many people have reported that they’ve been taken into ships, and warned about the direction the human race is heading. They’re also often portrayed as assisting our planet in various ways, both on a physical level and an energetic one.
“Decades ago, visitors from other plants warned us about where we were headed and offered to help. But instead, we, or at least some of us, interpreted their visits as a threat, and decided to shoot first and ask questions after.” – Paul Hellyer, Former Canadian Defense Minister (source)
There have also been reports of human looking extraterrestrials working with humans inside of what’s known as the military industrial complex with regards to making technological advancements. This is why in the highly classified world, the black budget world, it’s probably the independent government contractors that are working in these areas.
Stories of human like extraterrestrials date from the beginning of time all the way up to the present day, and historical literature is littered with accounts of these types of encounters.
My people tell of Star People who came to us many generations ago. The Star people brought spiritual teachings and stories and maps of the cosmos and they offered these freely. As far as the picture above, I am not sure if it’s real or fake, but that’s not the point. It was used to spark your imagination, it is supposedly one of the extraterrestrials that was discovered dead inside of a ship that was located on the moon – retrieved from one of the Apollo missions.
Other common looks are tall, muscular with long hair, blue eyes and blond hair. The same type of figure has also been reported with black and white beings. Some reports have detailed beings with blue skin, larger eyes, as well as shorter beings, with a little more ’round’ of a head. There seems to be a large variation, some know asand the possibility of several different looking human-like extraterrestrial beings. This raises some very interesting questions regarding the origin of our species, if the humanoid form is common throughout the universe, what does that mean?
Contanctee’s commonly refer to these beings being from various star systems like Arcturus, Sirius, Andromeda and the Pleiades, just to name a few.
Cat/bird like humanoid (like above) beings are also fairly common among supposed encounters.

The grey alien is another very common type of extraterrestrial that’s been reported by several abductees, contactees and experiencers. Reports range from small, three to four feet tall beings all the way up to seven to nine foot tall beings and everything in between.
One of the most common types of experiences among several abductees is one in which they have their sperm or eggs extracted. Many have gone through what seems to be a pretty scary experience, despite the fact that multiple times people have reported the beings communicating to them and trying to calm them down, and tell the person that they weren’t going to cause any harm to them. At other times, forceful abduction goes without any communication. Many abductee’s report being impregnated, and then abducted years after to see their hybrid child. This seems to be a very common experience, and suggests that this race (Greys) are creating a human/grey hybrid race, or have been tinkering with the DNA of human beings for quite some time. Many researchers have suggested that these hybrids are already here, and that many babies being born today could have been ‘tinkered’ with. There have also been sightings of Grey like beings taking vegetation from our planet (perhaps’s to study, alien scientists?).
There have also been reports of woman being impregnated by a supposed extraterrestrial or extraterrestrial/human hybrid. Shortly after the experience the women are taken by ‘government’ agencies and the baby is removed and taken away to be studied by them. It’s not uncommon for these people who have had these experiences to get visits by these unknown people who seem to want to know more about the UFO/extraterrestrial phenomenon.
There are some reports of races like these working with certain governments (or ‘shadow governments’) in a technological exchange program. I have come across stories in my research where some groups of beings warn the human race not work with other groups of beings. These stories are endless, and quite fascinating, but I’ll save that for another article.
Reptilians
The ‘Reptilian’ type being is one that’s been reported and depicted in various human cultures that date back thousands of years all the way up to the present day. These beings have been reported as ‘friendly,’not so friendly and in between. That’s a common theme throughout most supposed extraterrestrial species. The fact that two different beings of the same race can be reported as benevolent and the other as malevolent.
Many people seem to believe that reptilian type beings are one (out of many) working behind the scenes with those who control the government to ‘en-slave’ the human race. Some even believe that that the global elite are in large part reptilian in origin.
To be honest, it’s not that far fetched. After researching this topic in depth for almost a decade, there is no doubt in my mind that not only have governments and ‘shadow governments’ become aware of the extraterrestrial presence, but they’ve interacted with several different groups of extraterrestrials.
It’s Ok To Ask These Questions
Just to re-emphasize that things like this need to be discussed more, because they are and have been discussed at the highest levels of government, in secret, for almost one hundred years. For example, this particular FBI document was addressed to “certain scientists of distinction,” to“aeronautical and military authorities,” and to “a number of public officials.”
The document is a letter that was sent to the director of FBI in Washington from the San Fransisco office, on a matter pertaining to UFOs & extraterrestrials:
“Lt.. Colonel (name redacted) of G2 [G2 means army intelligence], San Francisco advised today he has no further information, and that our Seattle office is in possession of all information known by him and is handling the matter at Tacoma, Washington”
The document goes on to provide a copy of a letter written by someone with “several university degrees” and a former “university department head.”
The memorandum also states that “the mere fact that the data herein were obtained by so-called ‘supernormal’ means is probably sufficient to insure its disregard by nearly all persons addressed.”
Key words above – the fact that they would like to “insure its disregard” by “nearly” everyone addressed.Does this mean that ‘some’ of the people addressed should not disregard it?
The letter goes on to outline and state that: (pages 21 & 22)
Part of the disks carry crews, others are under remote control.
Their mission is peaceful, the visitors contemplate settling on this planet.
These visitors are human-like but much larger in size.
They are not excarnate Earth people, but come from their own world
The disks posses some type of radiant energy.
They do not come from any “planet” as we use the word, but from an etheric planet which interpenetrates with our own and is not perceptible to us.
The bodies of the visitors, and the craft also, automatically materialize on entering the vibratory rate of our dense matter.
They re-enter the etheric at will, and so simply disappear from our vision, without trace.
The region they come from is NOT the astral plane, but corresponds to the Lakas or Talas. Students of esoteric matters will understand these terms
Please keep in mind that there are probably many different types of extraterrestrials out there, and many different kinds that have interacted with humanity in some way. The above document is probably referring to one specific race? I don’t know.
This is one out of thousands of examples of documents, and it’s not even one that I would pick as most startling. We should definitely be thinking about why these documents were concealed from the public for decades, and think about what other information still lay dormant inside of the military industrial complex when it comes to extraterrestrial beings.

Coming from such a distinguished background, we can make several basic assumptions about him, not least of which is that he is highly intelligent. We can also assume that he knows and has worked with other intelligent and powerful people, and that he has had access to extremely sensitive data, which he himself makes clear in the below interview and in his book, The Ringmakers of Saturn.
What makes Norman’s story so intriguing is not only his impressive background, but the fact that hundreds of other scientists, politicians, and high-ranking military personnel have also shared information like this. He is just one of many insiders exposing the reality of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial beings.
When former NASA astronaut and Princeton Physics Professor Dr. Brian O’Leary said that there is“abundant evidence that we are being contacted, that civilizations have been visiting us for a very long time,” he wasn’t joking. There are now officially declassified documents that verify a long history of military encounters with these objects; objects which are performing maneuvers that no known aircraft can perform, all while traveling at speeds no known aircraft can travel. Not only that, but at the same time that pilots visually confirm their sightings, these objects are being tracked on both air and ground radar.

There are certain discoveries on planet Earth that cannot be explained by conventional thinking methods and mainstream history sure has a problem with many findings that remain an enigma to experts. Researchers found out that the largest pieces that were unearthed were made almost entirely out of copper and the smaller ones from tungsten and molybdenum.
According to reports, the largest of the objects is 2.87 centimeters in length while the smallest ones are only 2.5 microns in length, to give you an example of their size, the average human hair is approximately 100 microns wide.

Via één van de NASA ruimtetelescopen is een groot cirkelvormig object waar te nemen dat ogenschijnlijk richting aarde koerst.
Misschien is het een technische afwijking in de telescoop, maar dat overheden iets verwachten blijkt onder andere uit het feit dat de Duitse bevolking, geadviseerd door de regering, moet gaan hamsteren.
Op de beelden van de NASA ruimtetelescoop Stereo A is op de beelden van 22 en 23 augustus een vreemd groot cirkelvormig object waar te nemen. Of, beter gezegd, twee cirkelvormige objecten.
Het lijkt er zelfs op dat de twee bollen met elkaar zijn verbonden en dat niet alleen, het lijkt alsof ze ook recht op de aarde af koersen.
Ook in 2011 werden er al eens vreemde objecten waargenomen via deze telescoop, maar dat werd toen door NASA verklaard als interne reflecties.
Wat het dit keer is, weet op dit moment niemand.
Wat we wel weten, is dat de Duitse overheid de bevolking verplicht wil laten preppen en dat heeft uiteraard niets te maken met terroristische aanslagen, maar alles met de nadering van de planeet Nibiru en metgezellen.
Zoals we in een vorig artikel schreven, zullen grote delen van Europa volgens verschillende Nibiru experts zoals Nancy Lieder en de Zeta’s onder water komen te staan.
Dit wordt veroorzaakt door de zogenaamde poleshift, waarbij torenhoge tsunami’s kunnen worden verwacht.
Echter, volgens Nancy heeft de voorbereiding van de Duitse overheid wel degelijk te maken met de komst van Nibiru, maar dat ze zich nu in alle haast voorbereiden op overstromingen die zullen gaan komen en die in dit stadium nog niet zullen worden veroorzaakt door de poleshift, maar de zogenaamde wobble van de aarde.
Deze wobble komt alleen voor op het noordelijk halfrond en je kunt het je voorstellen als een tol. Waarbij de zuidpool van de aarde de punt is waarop deze rust en de noordpool de bovenkant van de tol vormt. Als een tol wat langzamer gaat draaien dan gaat de bovenkant wiebelen. Dat is wat er in toenemende mate gebeurt met het noordelijk halfrond als gevolg van de nadering van Nibiru.
Echter, voordat de planeet Nibiru daadwerkelijk voor die poleshift zal zorgen, zal er ook wat zij noemt een sterke wobble optreden. Een wiebelen van de aarde dat groter zal zijn dan normaal en wat ook gevolgen heeft voor de aarde.
Zo zullen er na deze sterke wobble ook overstromingen optreden, alleen nog niet zo heftig als dat dat met de poleshift zal gebeuren. Wat er door de heftige wobble zal ontstaan, is dat het water in de oceanen en zeeën heen en weer zal klotsen.
Het water van de Atlantische Oceaan zal dan volgens Nancy in een noordelijke richting klotsen en in combinatie met hoog water wellicht vloedgolven van 100 meter hoogte veroorzaken.

A witness at West Jordan in Utah reported seeing a cylinder-shaped UFO floating and changing colors before moving away slowly. According to case 78051 from the witness reporting database of Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), the witness was traveling at 7000 South and Redwood when he noticed two lights floating under 500 feet.
He initially thought it was just a plane, but the lights weren’t moving. When the witness got closer, he noticed a cylinder-shaped figure in between the two bright, white lights, which later turned into purple, red, and blue. As he passed, he looked behind and saw the UFO slowly moving towards the northern side of Utah while changing into three colors.
According to Utah MUFON investigators Robert Crowe and Cary Crowe, the witness claimed to have seen a door that was centered on the cylinder, approximately 10 feet by 10 feet. The witness explained that the door is similar to an airplane that rolls up. The witness did not notice a source of propulsion from the flying object.
The investigators tried to find other witnesses in the area for four hours but failed to find one. They also contacted the local West Jordan Police Department to know if there was any report related to this strange event, but the local police received no report.
The investigators dispose this case as Unknown after failing to find another sighting of this description in a thousand mile radius.

Undersea phenomenon isn’t new to Russian submarines as they have been encountering it since the days of the Soviet Union.
The files on the so-called unidentified submersible objects (USOs) are still not available for public scrutiny. However, some of the sightings about encounters with undersea creatures and massive objects have leaked out. Researchers Paul Stonehill and Philip Mantle talked about the secret conflict in a new book.
They believe Russian government has been preventing any witnesses to tell the public on the truth beneath the waves.
They claim these encounters range from UFOs duping craft into the sea, meetings with underwater lifeforms, and mysterious submersibles.
One of the most extraordinary is what they called “The Swimmers”.
These so-called alien humanoids stand at three-meter tall and live at 50 meters in the icy underwater around Siberia.
Stonehill and Mantle feature the testimony of Major General V. Demyanenko, a Russian commander of the Military Diver Service. He reportedly warned his crews on the unknown creatures after some encounters in 1982.
These creatures are reportedly clad in a silvery suit and wearing sphere helmets. Soviet Navy divers of seven were thrown to the surface by a mysterious force after they tried to capture one of the creatures in a net.
In another odd encounter, Steamship Raduga has seen a massive fireball emerging from the ocean while sailing in the Red Sea in 1965. The unusual thing allegedly hovered 150 meters above the surface with a gigantic pillar of water around it before it dived again.
Russia Chief of the Pacific fleet’s intelligence department, Admiral V.A. Domislovsky, claimed to have seen an estimated 900 meters long object floating above the water in the Pacific Ocean.
Rear Admiral and nuclear submarine commander Yury Beketov claimed to have witnessed a mysterious activity involving USO in the Bermuda triangle. Based on their radar, the object was moving 250 mph below the surface.
Mr. Mantle said that the Soviet Union’s military fleet commanders kept their secret about the USO subject, and those witnesses who tried to share their experiences were debunked and ridiculed.

De nieuwe methode kan helpen in de zoektocht naar een tweede aarde. Door te weten uit welke grondstoffen planeten buiten het zonnestelsel uit bestaan, kan er een simulatie gemaakt worden om de leefbaarheid en biologische evolutie van een exoplaneet in kaart te brengen. “Op die manier kunnen we vaststellen of een aardachtige exoplaneet meer weg heeft van Venus of toch een zusje van de aarde is”, zegt onderzoeker Debra Fischer van de Yale universiteit.
Dankzij de nieuwe methode zijn in het verleden de oppervlaktetemperatuur, de zwaartekracht nabij het oppervlak, de rotatiesnelheid en de chemische samenstelling van 1.600 sterren berekend. En dat allemaal gebaseerd op basis van vijftien elementen die zijn gevonden in deze sterren. Nu hebben onderzoekers 800 nieuwe sterren geanalyseerd. Zij richtten zich nu op de verhouding koolstof-zuurstof en magnesium-silicium.
Eén van de conclusies is dat diamanten planeten zeldzamer zijn dan gedacht. Er zijn namelijk vrijwel geen sterren die zoveel koolstof bevatten dat er diamanten planeten bestaan. Om diamant in de kern te vormen is namelijk veel koolstof nodig.
Uit de nieuwe gegevens blijkt o.a. dat 55 Cancri e onvoldoende koolstof bevat om de naam ‘diamanten planeet’ te verdienen. Overigens is dit geen gloednieuwe conclusie. De theorie van 55 Cancri e als diamanten planeet is in 2013 al ontkracht.
“Diamantplaneten zijn zeldzamer dan we een paar jaar geleden dachten”, vervolgt Fischer. “Diamanten planeten zijn echt kostbaar.”

Nieuw onderzoek suggereert dat de donkere strepen die in warme seizoenen op Mars te zien zijn, amper of zelfs helemaal geen water bevatten.
Het is een bekend fenomeen op de rode planeet: de Recurring Slope Lineae (RSL). Het zijn donkere strepen op hellingen – bijvoorbeeld kraterwanden – die alleen in de warmere seizoenen op Mars te zien zijn. De strepen zijn doorgaans minder dan vijf meter breed en verdwijnen weer als het kouder wordt.
Stromend zout water Waaruit bestaan deze donkere strepen toch? Vorig jaar dachten onderzoekers het eindelijk te weten. Ze ontdekten op de plekken waar de donkere streepjes opdoken, gehydrateerde zoutmineralen en stelden dat de donkere strepen het resultaat zijn van zout stromend water. Het was wereldnieuws: opeens bleken er in ons zonnestelsel niet één, maar twee planeten te zijn waarop vloeibaar water stroomde (de aarde én Mars).
Temperatuur Nieuw onderzoek geeft echter een iets genuanceerder beeld. Wetenschappers bestudeerden de donkere strepen dit keer met het Thermal Emmission Imaging System (THEMIS) aan boord van de ruimtesonde Mars Odyssey. Dit instrument meet de grondtemperatuur op Mars en uit die grondtemperatuur kunnen de onderzoekers dan weer afleiden hoeveel water de Recurring Slope Lineae bevatten. Want wanneer water aanwezig is in de ruimte tussen zanddeeltjes, dan is dat van invloed op hoe snel een stukje grond overdag opwarmt en ’s nachts afkoelt.

Weinig water Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de Recurring Slope Lineae veel minder water bevatten dan gedacht. Als de RSL een heel dun laagje water bevattende grond bezitten, dan zou die laag niet meer dan drie gram water per kilogram grond bevatten. Daarmee zou de grond ongeveer net zoveel water bevatten als de droogste plekken op aarde (de Atacama-woestijn en de Dry Valleys op Antarctica). Als de laag grond die water bevat dikker is, zou de hoeveelheid water per kilogram grond nog kleiner zijn.
Droog of nat? De onderzoekers sluiten niet uit dat water een rol speelt bij het ontstaan van de Recurring Slope Lineae. “Maar de duisternis van de grond hangt niet samen met grote hoeveelheden water, hetzij vloeibaar of bevroren,” vertelt onderzoeker Christopher Edwards. Hij benadrukt dat echter niet kan worden uitgesloten dat volledig droge mechanismen aan het ontstaan van de RSL ten grondslag liggen.
Het nieuwe onderzoek veegt het eerdere onderzoek dat stelde dat de RSL rijk waren aan gehydrateerde zoutmineralen niet van tafel, zo benadrukken de onderzoekers. “Je kunt gehydrateerd zout hebben, zonder genoeg water te hebben om de ruimtes tussen deeltjes te vullen,” legt Edwards uit. “Zouten kunnen gehydrateerd raken door waterdamp uit de atmosfeer te trekken, daar heb je dus geen ondergrondse waterbron voor nodig.” En daarmee zijn de donkere strepen op het oppervlak van Mars dus eigenlijk weer het mysterie dat ze sinds hun ontdekking in 2011 waren. Nog altijd weten we niet waardoor de donkere strepen ontstaan en weer verdwijnen. Stromend water lijkt in ieder geval niet zo’n grote – of zelfs helemaal geen – rol te spelen.

De rivierbeddingen bevestigen wat klimaatmodellen van een jong Mars al voorspelden: de rode planeet was warm en nat.
Al sinds de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw ontdekken onderzoekers met regelmaat valleien en kanalen op Mars die door water lijken te zijn uitgesneden. Het bewijs dat Mars ooit nat en warm was, stapelde zich geleidelijk aan op.
Arabia Terra Maar één gebied bleek elke keer een kink in de kabel te zijn. Arabia Terra: een noordelijke vlakte op de rode planeet. Klimaatmodellen van een nat en warm Mars lieten elke keer zien dat het hier lang geleden regende. Maar onderzoekers konden maar geen geologisch bewijs vinden voor flinke regenbuien op de vlakte. “Het leidde ertoe dat sommigen dachten dat Mars nooit warm en nat was, maar een grotendeels bevroren planeet was, bedekt met ijskappen en gletsjers,” vertelt onderzoeker Joel Davis.
Rivieren Davis en collega’s hebben nu echter – eindelijk – bewijs gevonden dat ook Arabia Terra vochtig moet zijn geweest. Ze ontdekten in het gebied gefossiliseerde rivierbeddingen. En niet zo weinig ook: als je ze achter elkaar zou leggen, zou je een afstand van 17.000 kilometer kunnen beslaan. “We hebben nu bewijs gevonden voor uitgebreide riviersystemen in dit gebied en deze onderschrijven het idee dat Mars warm en nat was.” En daarmee moet de planeet een stuk aantrekkelijker zijn geweest voor leven dan wanneer deze bedekt was met ijskappen en gletsjers.
Omgekeerd De rivieren die de onderzoekers ontdekt hebben, zijn ‘omgekeerd’. Het zijn geen geulen, maar heuveltjes in het landschap. Ooit waren het geultjes, waarin het water kiezels en zand afzette. Omdat het omringende landschap sneller erodeerde dan de rivierbedding, ging de rivierbedding gaandeweg steeds verder boven het oppervlak uitsteken. De rivierbeddingen die de onderzoekers nu in Arabia Terra hebben ontdekt, zijn ongeveer 30 meter hoog en tot twee kilometer breed. “We denken dat het de restanten zijn van gigantische rivieren die miljarden jaren geleden stroomden,” vertelt Davis. “Arabia Terra was eigenlijk één grote overstromingsvlakte, grenzend aan de hoog- en laaglanden van Mars. We denken dat de rivieren 3,9 tot 3,9 miljard jaar geleden actief waren, maar geleidelijk aan droogvielen.”
Met deze nieuwe onderzoeksresultaten in gedachten wordt Arabia Terra wel heel interessant in de zoektocht naar sporen van Martiaans leven. Als er miljarden jaren geleden leven was op Mars en die organismen ook in de machtige rivieren van Arabia Terra leefden, zijn resten ervan wellicht nog in de gefossiliseerde rivierbeddingen terug te vinden. “Deze oude Martiaanse overstromingsvlakte is een geweldige plek om te zoeken naar sporen van leven,” vindt onderzoeker Matthew Balme. En misschien gaan we die vlakte al wel heel snel van dichterbij bekijken. Eén van de mogelijke landingsplekken van de ExoMars-rover – deze wordt in 2020 gelanceerd – bevindt zich namelijk in Arabia Terra.

Zal een stofdeeltje roet in het eten gooien en het ruimtevaartuig dat Stephen Hawking binnen 20 jaar tijd naar de dichtstbijzijnde ster wil sturen al ruim voor aankomst vernietigen?
Eerder dit jaar kondigde Stephen Hawking een nieuw wetenschappelijk project aan: Breakthrough Starshot. Het project moet binnen twintig jaar leiden tot de lancering van een ruimtevaartuig dat een bezoekje gaat brengen aan Alpha Centauri: het dichtstbijzijnde stersysteem (dat sinds gisterenavond opeens een stuk interessanter is geworden, zie kader). Het ruimtevaartuig in kwestie weegt niet meer dan een vel paper en gebruikt in eerste instantie een groot, maar flinterdun zeil om op snelheid te komen. Dat zeil wordt door een gigantische laserstraal die vanaf de aarde wordt afgevuurd, versneld. uiteindelijk zal het ruimtevaartuig zich met een snelheid van 60.000 kilometer per seconde door de ruimte haasten. Zelfs met die ongelofelijke snelheid zal het ruimtevaartuig er ongeveer 20 jaar over doen om bij Alpha Centauri te arriveren.
Gisterenavond maakten astronomen bekend dat ze een aardachtige exoplaneet hebben ontdekt die rond de dichtstbijzijnde ster cirkelt. De exoplaneet heeft de naam Proxima b gekregen en draait om de ster Proxima Centauri, onderdeel van het stersysteem Alpha Centauri. De aardachtige planeet bevindt zich in de leefbare zone. “De zoektocht naar leven op Proxima b is de volgende stap,” zo stelde één van de ontdekkers van de exoplaneet, Guillem Anglada-Escudé.
Stof Prachtig plan. Maar is het ook haalbaar? Daarover buigen onderzoekers zich momenteel. En één van de dingen waar ze zich zorgen over maken is: stof. “Zal een ruimtevaartuig dat beweegt met een snelheid die in de buurt komt van de snelheid van het licht in staat zijn om de schade die toegebracht wordt door interstellair gas en stof te overleven?” zo vragen onderzoekers zich in dit recent verschenen paper af.
Kogeltjes Hier op aarde zien we in een enkel stofdeeltje misschien niet zo’n bedreiging. Maar in de ruimte is dat anders. Het ruimtevaartuig van Hawking heeft een snelheid van eenvijfde lichtminuut per minuut. En wanneer je met zo’n snelheid op een stofdeeltje klapt, heeft dat heel andere effecten dan wanneer er hier op aarde een stofdeeltje op je dressoir landt. Met zulke snelheden worden stofdeeltjes als kogels en kan het ruimtevaartuig flink beschadigen. Grote vraag is: zijn die beschadigingen vervelend of fataal voor de missie? Het hangt met name af van de omvang van de stofdeeltjes. Een stofdeeltje van slechts 15 micrometer groot is voldoende om het ruimtevaartuig totaal te vernietigen. Maar, zo stellen de onderzoekers, gelukkig zijn zulke grote stofdeeltjes vrij zeldzaam en de kans dat het ruimtevaartuig zo’n stofdeeltje tegenkomt, is bijzonder klein. Een ontmoeting met kleinere stofdeeltjes is een stuk aannemelijker. “Interstellair stof kan talloze kraters op het oppervlak van het ruimtevaartuig veroorzaken,” zo schrijven de onderzoekers. Tegen de tijd dat het ruimtevaartuig bij Alpha Centauri arriveert, kan het oppervlak van het ruimtevaartuig zo gemakkelijk 30 procent van het volume zijn kwijtgeraakt.
Maatregelen Het goede nieuws is dat er tijdens de ontwikkeling van het ruimtevaartuig wel maatregelen kunnen worden genomen om de kans op beschadigingen door toedoen van stofdeeltjes te verkleinen. Zo kan een 1,3 millimeter dik ‘schild’ gemaakt van grafiet al een verschil maken. Ook lijkt het verstandig om het zeil – dat alleen tijdens het begin van de reis nodig is om het ruimtevaartuig te versnellen – op een gegeven moment op te vouwen en achter een beschermend schild weg te stoppen. “Een andere oplossing kan zijn om het zeil achter het beschermende materiaal, maar voor het ruimtevaartuig te stoppen om de gevoelige elektronica te beschermen.”
Interstellair gas De onderzoekers gingen ook na welk effect het interstellaire gas op het ruimtevaartuig heeft. En ook dat gas kan het ruimtevaartuig beschadigen, maar niet zo erg als het interstellaire stof. Zo zal het interstellaire gas het oppervlak van het ruimtevaartuig slechts tot een diepte van 0,1 millimeter kunnen aantasten. En als het ruimtevaartuig gemaakt wordt van goed geleidend materiaal (bijvoorbeeld grafiet) kunnen beschadigen door zware gasatomen wellicht zelfs helemaal voorkomen worden.
Al met al is er dus nog geen reden om Breakthrough Starshot af te schrijven. Wel wordt duidelijk dat er nog een hoop werk aan de winkel is alvorens dit ruimtevaartuig het luchtruim kan kiezen. Er valt nog veel te onderzoeken en er zijn nog heel wat hindernissen te nemen. Maar het is alle moeite ongetwijfeld waard.

Wetenschappers hebben een sterrenstelsel gevonden op een afstand van 320 miljoen lichtjaar van de aarde. Dit sterrenstelsel is even zwaar als de Melkweg, maar bestaat uit veel minder sterren. Dit is te danken aan donkere materie.
Wetenschappers beweren dat het sterrenstelsel Dragonfly 44 voor 99,99% uit donkere materie bestaat. De andere 0,01% wordt verklaard door de aanwezigheid van sterren. “Als je kijkt naar onze Melkweg, dan moet je van iedere honderd sterren er slechts één bewaren. Dan kom je in de buurt van de verdeling van sterren in Dragonfly 44”, zegt onderzoeker Pieter van Dokkum van de Yale universiteit tegen de Amerikaanse nieuwssite New Scientist. “Daarnaast moet je de overgebleven sterren in een blender doen.” Dragonfly 44 is geen mooi spiraalstelsel als onze Melkweg, maar een zogenoemd elliptisch sterrenstelsel.
Volgens Van Dokkum en zijn collega’s zijn er veel meer sterrenstelsels als Dragonfly 44. In het Coma-cluster – een grote groep sterrenstelsels op 320 miljoen lichtjaar van de aarde – zijn 47 zwakke vlekjes te zien. Dit kunnen sterrenstelsels zijn die minstens zo groot zijn als de Melkweg – 100.000 lichtjaar in doorsnee – maar veel minder sterren bevatten. Daarom zijn ze net zo helder als kleinere dwergstelsels.
Met dank aan de spectograaf van de Keck II-telescoop weten de astronomen dat de sterren in Dragonfly 44 een snelheid hebben van 47 kilometer per seconde. Een hogere snelheid betekent dat het sterrenstelsel zwaarder is. Uit de berekeningen blijkt dat Dragonfly 44 een biljoen keer zwaarder is dan onze zon.
