The hottest 5 years on record: 2016, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2014
Officially, 2018 has been the 4th hottest year on record, fulfilling a dreadful pattern: the past five years have been the hottest since mankind started recording global temperatures in 1880. This is no coincidence — it’s a clear exemplification of the warming trend our planet is experiencing, and that we are causing.
Global average annual temperature anomalies from NASA’s global Land-Ocean Temperature Index data set (1951-1980 base period).
“The key message is that the planet is warming,” Gavin Schmidt, the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City, told reporters at a news conference. “And our understanding of why those trends are occurring is also very robust. It’s because of the greenhouse gases that we[‘ve] put into the atmosphere over the last 100 years.
Both NOAA and NASA have confirmed that 2018 was the 4th hottest year on record. They also double-checked their data with other external and independent groups, further confirming the results: last year, global land- and ocean-surface temperatures were 1.42 degrees Fahrenheit (0.79 degrees Celsius) above the 20th-century average.
The warming wasn’t uniform, however. In North America, temperatures were closer to the century average, but the difference was more than made up for in other parts of the world.

Yet even without elevated temperatures, the effects of climate change were visible in the US. It was the third wettest year on record — yet at the same time, drought ravaged parts of the country. There were also much more extreme weather events than normal, something which is increasingly attributed to climate change.
Researchers also warned that the climate change and the damage will pale in comparison to what we will experience in the future, especially if we continue to spew carbon at the rate we currently are.
All models and measurements consistently show that the planet is warming.

The data in case is extremely reliable, and climate scientists have gone to great lengths to avoid any potential uncertainties. For instances, they factored in how different methodologies for data acquisition and processing may have changed over the years and factored in the “urban heat island” effect” in which cities are warmer than the surrounding environment. Nowadays, agencies collect most of the data from rural areas — which is also controlled for.
Overall, you could hardly imagine more convincing data to show that climate change is happening. So one can only wonder — for those people who don’t “believe” in climate change (although believing in a scientific reality doesn’t really mean anything), what would it take to convince them? Would that even be possible? Or is it a “hoax” or a “liberal conspiracy” no matter what the evidence says?
Now is a really good time to remember that science is non-partisan, and the science says we’re causing a lot of trouble for ourselves and the rest of the planet. It’s time to reduce emissions and start cleaning up after ourselves.
In July 2018, the UK space agency announced a competitionto name the rover, which is scheduled to launch in 2020 as part of the ongoing ExoMars mission. Over 36,000 people from all over the European Unionsent their proposals and suggestions. Apparently, the ESA learned from the previous “Boaty McBoatFace” experience and instead of choosing the most popular suggestion, they had a team of experts select from the proposals.
The ESA has a long tradition of naming its missions after famous researchers, and this was no exception. British astronaut Tim Peake announced the decision: the rover will be named Rosalind Franklin.
Rosalind was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer who contributed to unraveling the double helix structure of our DNA. However, her contribution was ignored and even denied in subsequent years. This is a well-deserved recognition of her contribution.
“This name reminds us that it is in the human genes to explore. Science is in our DNA, and in everything we do at ESA. Rosalind the rover captures this spirit and carries us all to the forefront of space exploration,” says ESA Director General Jan Woerner.
Rosalind herself was much enamored with space exploration, although unfortunately, she did not get to witness to much of it.
“In the last year of Rosalind’s life, I remember visiting her in hospital on the day when she was excited by the news of the [Soviet Sputnik satellite] – the very beginning of space exploration,” Franklin’s sister, Jenifer Glynn, said according to the BBC. ”She could never have imagined that over 60 years later there would be a rover sent to Mars bearing her name, but somehow that makes this project even more special.”
The new ExoMars rover will be the first of its kind, being able to combine the capability to roam around Mars and to study its subsurface. The mission is being run by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Russia’s Roscosmos. ExoMars was originally supposed to have three parts: an orbiter, this rover, and a lander, named Schiaparelli after an Italian astronomer. However, Schiaparelli crashed into Mars, a disaster that was likely caused by a software bug.
If everything goes according to plan, the mission will launch in 2020, and Rosalind Franklin will land on Mars in 2021, offering us a new understanding of the geological processes on the Red Planet.
“This rover will scout the martian surface equipped with next-generation instruments – a fully-fledged automated laboratory on Mars,” says Tim Peake.
Astronomers have just found an asteroid that zips around the sun every 165 Earth days.
That's the shortest year for any asteroid known to humankind, discovery team members said. And the space rock, called 2019 AQ3, could be part of a vast and virtually unknown population zooming through the inner solar system, quite close to the sun.
"We have found an extraordinary object whose orbit barely strays beyond Venus' orbit — that's a big deal," Quanzhi Ye, a postdoctoral researcher at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC), an astronomy data and science facility at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, said in a statement. [Watch: Asteroid 2019 AQ3's Superfast Orbit Around the Sun]
2019 AQ3 is a "very rare species," Ye said, adding that "there might be many more undiscovered asteroids out there like it." To be clear, asteroid 2019 AQ3's orbit isn't the fastest of any object. The planet Mercury makes one trip around the sun every 88 days. But the space rock is unique, researchers said.
Ye spotted 2019 AQ3 on Jan. 4, in images captured by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a sky-surveying camera installed on the 48-inch (122 centimeters) Samuel Oschin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory in Southern California.
The ZTF, which began operations in March 2018, scans the entire visible northern sky every three nights. Its wide field of view and rapid surveying frequency make the ZTF a great observer of supernova explosions, asteroids and other “transients” — astronomical objects and phenomena that are visible only temporarily.
Indeed, the camera has already spotted 60 new near-Earth asteroids, ZTF team members said.
Ye reported the discovery of 2019 AQ3 to the IAU (International Astronomical Union) Minor Planet Center, the organization responsible for collecting and coordinating data about asteroids and comets in our solar system.
Multiple research groups then observed the object on Jan. 6 and 7, using a variety of telescopes. Astronomers reviewed archived data as well, finding evidence of 2019 AQ3 in images captured by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) in Hawaii dating back to 2015.
Putting all this information together, Ye and his colleagues were able to map 2019 AQ3's orbit in detail. The asteroid zooms around the sun on an elliptical path that takes it inside Mercury's orbit at closest approach and slightly beyond Venus at its most distant point, the researchers determined. And 2019 AQ3's orbit is inclined, out of the plane of the paths taken by Earth and the solar system's other big planets.
2019 AQ3 therefore appears to belong to the Atira (also known as Apohele) class of asteroids, which have orbits interior to that of Earth. Just 20 or so space rocks, out of 800,000 known asteroids, are Atiras, researchers said.
"The origin of Atiras is an intriguing and open question," discovery team member Wing-Huen Ip, a professor of astronomy and space science at the Institute of Astronomy and Space Science at the National Central University in Taiwan, said in the same statement. "With every additional object, we get closer to formulating and testing models about that origin, and about the history of our solar system."
Many more Atiras likely exist and the ones that line up Earth in their crosshairs could be especially dangerous, the researchers said. That's because these asteroids would be coming from the direction of the sun and would thus be hard to spot because of our star's overpowering glare.
2019 AQ3 is not dangerous, however. Its orbit never brings it closer to Earth than about 22 million miles (35.4 million kilometers), the researchers said.
While the size of the newfound asteroid is unclear, observations suggest that it could be almost 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. If that's the case, 2019 AQ3 would be one of the biggest Atiras known.
"In so many ways, 2019 AQ3 really is an oddball asteroid," Ye said.
Mike Wall's book about the search for alien life, "Out There" (Grand Central Publishing, 2018; illustrated by Karl Tate) is out now.
SpaceX's new astronaut taxi won't make its inaugural trip to the International Space Station (ISS) this month after all.
SpaceX and Boeing are developing commercial space capsules — called Crew Dragonand CST-100 Starliner, respectively — to carry NASA astronauts to and from the orbiting lab.
"The agency now is targeting March 2 for launch of SpaceX's Crew Dragon on its uncrewed Demo-1 test flight. Boeing's uncrewed Orbital Flight Test is targeted for launch no earlier than April," NASA officials wrote in the status update.
"These adjustments allow for completion of necessary hardware testing, data verification, remaining NASA and provider reviews, as well as training of flight controllers and mission managers," they added.
The next big box to check after these demonstration flights will be tests of the private vehicles' emergency escape systems, which would get the capsules away from danger if a problem arose during launch. Boeing plans to run this test in May, and SpaceX will perform its version in June.
Then will come huge milestones — crewed test flights to the ISS. Astronauts haven't launched to orbit from American soil since July 2011, when NASA retired its space shuttle fleet. Since then, the space agency has been dependent on Russian Soyuz rockets and spacecraft to perform this taxi service.
Crew Dragon's crew-carrying demonstration is currently scheduled for July, and Starliner's for no earlier than August, according to the new NASA update. Operational flights will begin sometime thereafter, assuming everything goes well.
The latest delay is far from the first for the commercial-crew program. When NASA inked its big multibillion-dollar deals with SpaceX and Boeing in 2014, for example, agency officials said they expected Crew Dragon and Starliner to be in operation by 2017.
"There still are many critical steps to complete before launch, and, while we eagerly are anticipating these launches, we will step through our test flight preparations and readiness reviews," Kathy Lueders, NASA's commercial crew program manager, said in today's update. "We are excited about seeing the hardware we have followed through development, integration, and ground testing move into flight."

China's history-makingChang'e 4 missionhas been spied by one of its robotic moon-studying brethren.
NASA'sLunar Reconnaissance Orbiter(LRO) recently caught a glinty glimpse of the Chang'e 4 lander, which on Jan. 2 became the first-ever spacecraft to make a soft touchdown on the moon's mysterious far side.
On Jan. 30, LRO rolled 70 degrees to the west as it approached Chang'e 4's landing site, the floor of the 115-mile-wide (186 kilometers) Von Kármán Crater. The maneuver brought the Chinese lander into view for LRO, though the mission's rover, named Yutu 2 ("Jade Rabbit 2"), escaped detection. [Photos from the Moon's Far Side! China's Chang'e 4 Lunar Landing in Pictures]
"Because LRO was 330 kilometers (205 miles) to the east of the landing site, the Chang'e 4 lander is only about two pixels across (bright spot between the two arrows), and the small rover is not detectable," LRO team members wrote in a description of the image, which was released today (Feb. 6).
"The massive mountain range in the background is the west wall of Von Kármán Crater, rising more than 3,000 meters (9,850 feet) above the floor," they added.
The Chang'e 4 lander-rover duo carry a variety of scientific instruments, which they're using to characterize the surface and near-subsurface of Von Kármán Crater. (Yutu 2 rolled down twin ramps from atop the lander a few days after touchdown.)
The mission could help scientists understand why the moon's near and far sides are so different from each other, Chinese officials have said. For example, dark volcanic plains known as maria cover most of the near side but are rare on the far side.
The Chang'e 4 lander also totes a biological experiment, which contains fruit-fly eggs and seeds of a few plants, including cotton. The cotton seeds sprouted, becoming the first non-human organisms ever to live on the lunar surface (not counting the microbes that hitched a ride with NASA’s Apollo astronauts). The little plants froze to death soon thereafter, however.
And in case you were wondering: The moon has a far side and a near side because it's "tidally locked" to Earth, meaning it always shows the same face to our planet. (That would be the near side.)
LRO has been circling the moon since 2009. The spacecraft's high-resolution imagery assists a wide variety of scientific studies and also aids planning for future robotic and human missions to Earth's nearest neighbor, NASA officials have said.

With our busy lives and fairly stable day-to-day environment, it’s easy to forget that we’re actually sitting on a huge rock hurtling through space. Only a thin atmospheric and magnetic cushion is what separates us from total annihilation. This cushion is fairly good at keeping some cosmic intruders at bay, such as smallasteroids, but larger objects could wreak havoc if they were to collide with Earth. Throughout our planet’s history, this has happened countless times, the dinosaur extinction being a prime example.
For some time, NASA has been working on an asteroid-deflection strategy and will soon launch a test mission to asteroid 65803 Didymos — a pair made of a smaller object called Didymoon that orbits around the larger 780-meter Didymos asteroid. The Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) project involves slamming a small probe into Didymoon, which measures only 160 meters in diameter, about the size of the Great Pyramid in Giza. The impact would slightly veer Didymoon away from its normal orbit around Didymos, informing NASA what kind of punch would be needed to deflect a real threat to Earth.
Danger from above
An impact with an asteroid isn’t the likeliest thing to happen in the universe. However, despite its low probability, such a scenario is a high-consequence event which requires “some degree of preparedness,” according to the authors of the new 18-page document titled the “National near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan”.
NASA has so far cataloged about 18,310 objects of all sizes, of which just over 800 are 140 meters or larger. A 2005 congressional mandate tasked the agency with tracking 90 percent of the near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters. NASA is just one-third of the way there, however.
While big asteroids, such as the kind that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, are absolutely brutal, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be worried by anything smaller. For instance, a 40- to 60-meter asteroid that exploded over Tunguska, Russia, leveled 2,000 square kilometers of forest. If the same were to happen over New York City, it would cause millions of casualties.
Didymoon will be by far the smallest asteroid ever explored by us — but even at its seemingly puny size, it would be enough to cause a continental-scale catastrophy if it slammed into Earth. The plan is to launch DART in 2021, with the goal of ramming into Didymoon in 2022 in order to change the course of the tiny world. In 2022 the double asteroid system will be only 11 million km (about 7 million miles) from Earth, which is why NASA is in quite a hurry.

If all goes well, the European Space Agency (ESA) will launch a follow-up mission called HERA in order to examine the impact.
“Such a binary asteroid system is the perfect testbed for a planetary defense experiment but is also an entirely new environment for asteroid investigations. Although binaries make up 15 percent of all known asteroids, they have never been explored before, and we anticipate many surprises,” Ian Carnelli, Hera project manager, told Earth Sky.
Using a small fleet of CubeSats, the HERA mission will measure the masses of the two asteroids, their surface properties, their new orbits, and the impact site itself. ESA hopes to launch the mission by 2026.
“This will give us a good estimate of the impact’s momentum transfer, and hence its efficiency as a deflection technique,” explains ESA’s Hera project scientist, Michael Küppers. “These are fundamental parameters to enable the validation of numerical impact models necessary to design future deflection missions. We will better understand whether this technique can be used even for larger asteroids, giving us certainty we could protect our home planet if needed.”
Scientists with NASA will unveil the latest climate trends and global temperature measurements for Earth today (Feb. 6) and you can follow the announcement live online.
SNASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) "will provide the annual release of global temperatures data and discuss the most important climate trends of 2018" in a teleconference today at 11:30 a.m. EST (1630 GMT). The audio will stream atNASA.gov/liveandwill be simulcast on Space.com here, courtesy of NASA.
The participants will include Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and Deke Ardnt, chief of the global monitoring branch of NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, NASA officials said in a statement. [What Is the Temperature of Earth?]
NASA and NOAA independently monitor the Earth's surface temperatures and changes based on observations of both land areas and oceans, using a network of satellites scattered in Earth orbit. While most people associate climate change with rising sea levels and melting glaciers, the effects of global warming are more profound than most realize.
For example, scientists from scientists from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) – and five other organizations – discovered last year that human-induced climate change is even extending into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide emissions flow into the troposphere (the lowest level of Earth's atmosphere) and increase the contrast between cold winters and hot summers.
A separate University of Iowa-led 2018 study of hurricanes suggests that some of these massive storms throw down 10 percent more rainfall today, compared with the period before climate change. That's expected to worsen to up to 30 percent more rainfall, according to simulations. Peak wind speeds could also pick up by as much as 33 mph (53 km/h).
'Oumuamua, the first known visitor frombeyond our solar system, is long gone, but it's still leaving scientists guessing. A new explanation proposes that the strange object was a "monstrous fluffy dust aggregate" — that's a technical term, apparently — produced by a busted-up comet.
That's the explanation laid out by Zdenek Sekanina, an astronomer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a new, unpublished paper. The explanation draws on observations of comets breaking apart as they get closer to the sun.
'Oumuamua is the interstellar object that astronomers detected whizzing through our solar system in October 2017. It was the first interstellar object scientists ever spotted, although they expect thousands more have gone unnoticed. Ever since 'Oumuamua's appearance, scientists have debated what the object is: asteroid or comet, ripped-up planetesimal, or of course, the least likely explanation, an alien probe.
The new paper adds another loop to the already-knotty issue by suggesting that the object changed during its brief time in our solar system. Scientists caught sight of 'Oumuamua only when it was already on its way out of the neighborhood, after all. So, while the object appeared reddish, long and thin during its exit, it may have started out with different properties. ['Oumuamua in Photos: The Solar System's 1st Interstellar Visitor Explained]
Starting with that idea, the new paper compared 'Oumuamua to other faint but more mundane comets that astronomers have observed. Typically, when these faint comets come within a quarter of Earth's distance from the sun, they don't survive the visit. And a comet's death is not a quiet process; instead, these comets experience a so-called outburst that triggers their disintegration.
Specifically, the paper considers a comet called C/2017 S3 (Pan-STARRS), which crept in from the Oort Cloud, which surrounds our solar system. This comet experienced two of these violent outbursts before finally falling to pieces. Observers gathered some strange data that suggested C/2017 S3's remains had become "a monstrous, extremely fluffy aggregate of loosely bound dust grains" before it even reached its closest approach to the sun.
While 'Oumuamua's precise origins and structure have confused scientists, this explanation offers a new complication: that the object wasn't actually a solid body when scientists first spotted it but was instead a clump of remnants. The new paper proposes that a similar fate to C/2017's befell 'Oumuamua, with its outburst coming before any scientific observations occurred, thus disguising the object's original structure.
The paper was posted to the pre-print server arXiv.org on Jan. 30.

US Coast Guard Discloses Unexplained Disappearances of Submarines After UFO Activity (Video)
There are many strange facts surrounding a number of missing submarines. Joseph was on duty on an Ocean Station patrol on the Coast Guard Cutter Mellon.
It was during this patrol that they had a number of unique UFO sightings that included radar and visual verification by a number of witnesses.
Three objects passed over the ship traveling at 3500mph having approached the ship from the direction of where the sub was lost. Flying time of note from OSV to that site at that speed recorded and verified was approximately 10 minutes.
It is highly possible that the UFO phenomenon, and what could have been a very dangerous “rogue” operation gone array, possibly leading to what could have been one of the most significant event.
Even thought this may only be anecdotal data it may help penetrate the veil of secrecy and mystery surrounding the Submarines.
Alexander Weygers, a Renaissance man in the mold of the tech industry’s stated ideal, inspired an art dealer to become an acolyte.
Alexander Weygers made numerous detailed drawings of an aircraft called the “Discopter”, a vertical liftoff aircraft that looked very much like what was to be later termed “flying saucer” and other drawings of an American cities specifically flying saucers in San Francisco and as well as a port in Chicago.
He sent these detailed plans to all the branches of the U.S. Military and was eventually told that they were intrigued by the concept and the design of the craft but were not prepared at that time because the war effort superseded its development.
However he did indeed patent the design for the “Discopter” in January 1944 with the U.S. Patent Office and it served as the prototype for other similar aircraft that have been developed up to the present day.
Ashlee Vance visits the dealer whose curiosity about Weygers has evolved into an obsession.

Two geologists who were on a field trip to study volcanic rocks in Namibia came upon another huge discovery –Africa once had ice streams. Graham Andrews and Sarah Brown, who are geologists at West Virginia University, were exploring the South African desert country when they noticed an odd land formation.
The land consisted of flat desert along with hundreds of steep, long hills. The landscape was shaped by drumlins which are hills that are commonly found in areas that once had glaciers. Needless to say, glaciers – even ancient ones – are not what one would expect in the desert.
Andrews explained that they knew exactly what they were looking at, “We quickly realized what we were looking at because we both grew up in areas of the world that had been under glaciers, me in Northern Ireland and Sarah in northern Illinois.”
Once Andrews returned home from the trip, he did some research on the drumlins in Namibia but found out that nobody had ever studied them. He said, “The last rocks we were shown on the trip are from a time period when southern Africa was covered by ice,” adding, “People obviously knew that part of the world had been covered in ice at one time, but no one had ever mentioned anything about how the drumlins formed or that they were even there at all.”
That’s when he partnered up with Andy McGrady, who is a geology senior at West Virginia University, and they used morphometrics to measure the shapes of the drumlins to see if they could find any regular patterns from when they were carved by the ice.
Normal glaciers don’t move a lot, but they discovered that there are big grooves in the drumlins that indicate that the ice must have been fast-moving in order to create the grooves. Those large grooves indicate that there was in fact an ice stream in the southern part of Africa around 300 million years ago during the late Paleozoic Age.
“The ice carved big, long grooves in the rock as it moved,” Andrews explained, “It wasn’t just that there was ice there, but there was an ice stream. It was an area where the ice was really moving fast.”
What they discovered shows that the southern part of Africa was over the South Pole during that time period. “These features provide yet another tie between southern Africa and south America to show they were once joined,” Andrews confirmed.
For some unknown reason, UFO reports seem to be on the decline even in the face of recent so-called “disclosures” of government research into unidentified aerial phenomena. What’s behind this mysterious decline? Have we become jaded and over-saturated with UFO reports thanks to the innumerable conspiracy YouTube channels publishing endless streams of shaky, out-of-focus videos of lens flares, or could something else be afoot?
As all things UFOs, it’s hard to say. Whatever the cause is, there seems to have been a sharp decrease in annual UFO sightings reported since 2014. That’s according to Cheryl Costa, a reporter with the Syracuse News Times who tracks NUFORC reports throughout the state of New York. According to her most recently published data, UFO sighting reports peaked in 2012 with 378, only to begin dropping in 2014. In 2018, only 103 sightings were reported in New York.
It’s important to remember that the term ‘UFO’ doesn’t necessarily imply an extraterrestrial craft, merely something unidentified in the skies.
New York’s downward trend is reflective of national data; UFO sighting reports nationwide in the US peaked in 2014 with 13,985 and fell to just 6,933 in 2018, a 50% decline. Despite the decrease, UFO hot spots Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona once again remain at the top of the list of cities with the highest numbers of UFO sightings, with 52 and 40, respectively. What’s behind this decrease in UFO sightings? Is this a sociological phenomenon, or are anomalous objects actually disappearing from our skies?
One would think that UFO sightings would be increasing along with the rise of aerial drones, but the opposite is true. Could it be that drones have created a go-to explanation and have led to fewer anomalous aerial phenomena to be reported? Or are urban light pollution and the digital zombification caused by mobile technology keeping us from gazing up at the skies as much as we used to? Is that all by design? Any guess is as good as any at this point.
Shhh. Quit asking questions and keep your eyes pointed downward at your device. Always at your device.
Are people losing interest in UFOs due to over-saturation, or are these phenomena actually less frequent than they once were? For those of us who track and research anomalous phenomena for a living, either explanation should be worrying.
When the CIA released millions of declassified documents in 2017 and placed them in a searchable online database, it was expected that some seriously spooky stuff would turn up. It’s public knowledge that the CIA has conducted research into all sorts of paranormal or otherwise anomalous phenomena ranging frompsychic abilities to UFOs, but a new trove of documents discovered among the millions of files has revealed the US intelligence agency even once went looking for the legendary Yeti in the mountains of Nepal. Was the ever-elusive abominable snow man-ape ever found?
Who knows; after all, the CIA likely released these documents merely to placate the public under the guise of transparency and is withholding the really good stuff in dusty warehouses full of the world’s higher mysteries and secrets. Still, these new documents add to a growing body of evidence showing that the CIA may take paranormal phenomena or entities including the Yeti seriously – or at least purport to in order to cover its tracks.
The documents were unearthed and posted online by Amish Raj Mulmi at the Kathmandu Post. In addition to the Yeti documents, the files show that the CIA took interest in at least seven different sightings of unidentified flying objects above Nepal and Bhutan in 1968. The unidentified objects described in the reports range from a “white light” emitting “blasting sounds” and “white smoke” to fast-moving cigar shape objects reminiscent of many other UFO sightings from the time period. Here are the “Particulars of the Object” from one report from 19 February, 1968:
A fast-moving object, long and thin, emitting red and green bright light, as bright as to cause daylight. Thunder sound heard after few second of sighting object.
Sure sounds an awful lot like a ballistic missile test or high-altitude aircraft breaking the sound barrier (aircraft typically have red and green navigation lights on the left and right wingtips, respectively). That would make sense given the historical and political context surrounding these sightings, which happened at the height of US involvement in the Vietnam War and at a time when the relatively newly-formed People’s Republic of China was ramping up their missile research, nuclear weapons program, and domestic aircraft production.
An early Chinese Shenyang J-8 from the 1960s.
Naturally, then, the CIA would have wanted to document any sightings of anomalous aerial objects in case they might shed light on what the Chinese or Soviets were up to in the skies above the region. One report even mentions that “huge metallic disc-shaped object with a six-foot base and four feet in height was found in a crater” at the foot of the Himalayas. Could this have been a crashed Soviet or Chinese aircraft or missile, or something stranger?
China and Nepal share a mountainous border with several ports of entry like the “Crisscross road” seen here.
The documents discovered by the Kathmandu Post also contain a cable sent 30 November, 1959 from the American Embassy in Kathmandu to the Department of State in Washington, D.C. The document outlines America’s official “Regulations Governing Mountain Climbing Expeditions in Nepal – Related to Yeti” and describe what American personnel conducting so-called “Mountaineering and Scientific Expeditions in Nepal” should do in the event of contact with the Yeti:
1. Royalty of Rs. 5000/- Indian Currency will have to be paid to His Majesty’s Government of Nepal for a permit to carry out an expedition in search of ‘Yeti.’
2. In case ‘Yeti’ is traced it can be photographed or caught alive but it must not be killed or shot at except in an emergency arising out of self defence. All photographs taken of the animal, the creature itself if captured alive or dead, must be surrendered to the Government of Nepal at the earliest time.
3. News and reports throwing light on the actual existence of the creature must be submitted to the Government of Nepal as soon as they are available and must not in anyway way be given out to the Press or Reporters for publicity without the permission of the Government of Nepal.
While hardcore ‘Squatchers may point to this document as proof of the US government’s knowledge of the legendary Yeti, it very well may be that these cables were actually using the Yeti to hide the true nature of these alleged “Mountaineering and Scientific Expeditions.” In the late 1950s, the CIA and the US government were deeply concerned with the spread of Chinese communist forces throughout the region as the Chinese were actively asserting their presence along the border with Nepal. It could be that the Yeti hunt was actually a cover for spies to keep tabs on the PRC’s activities in the region. It’s known that the CIA and other intelligence agencies often use “scientific expeditions” as a cover to send agents into the field; if you replace every instance of “Yeti” in the document with “Chinese spies or scouts,” these cables begin to make a lot more sense.
It’s long been suspected that intelligence agencies intentionally muddy the waters by using alleged paranormal activity to cover their tracks.
While these documents are far from a smoking gun, they may show how the government study of anomalous phenomena can be used to mask the true purpose of the CIA’s or other agencies’ intelligence gathering activities. Could the CIA actually have been hunting the legendary Yeti and gathering reports of truly unidentified aerial phenomena? It’s possible – but it’s highly more probable that they were keeping tabs on the USA’s favorite frenemy, the PRC. What might these documents suggest about the Pentagon’s modern day study of UFOs?
Dulce Base 2019 - What REALLY Happens Deep Underground is Astounding!
Dulce Base 2019 - What REALLY Happens Deep Underground is Astounding!
Located almost two miles beneath Archuleta Mesa on the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation near Dulce, New Mexico was an installation classified so secret, its existence would be one of the most protected realities in the world.
In the following video we will look at the Secret Space Program: the ships of the Deep Space Fleet; interstellar/interspecies treaty conferences on Earth; non-human species who work with the military; Mark Richards' training with the Raptor Imperial Fleet; and, various missions on-and-off Earth to defend humanity.
In 1979 there was the human-extraterrestrial confrontation that took place at Dulce Base. The most detailed report comes from Phil Schneider, a former military geologist who worked on underground military bases.
Image left: Phil Schneider - Learn more about his experiments at the Dulce Base Here.
Philip Schneider, an explosive engineer who worked for the U.S. government, with high-level security clearance, claimed that in 1979 he participated in the building of a "secret underground base," in Dulce, New Mexico.
It was here that a horrific battle played out leaving 60 humans dead and countless subterranean aliens fighting for their life.
Schneider asserts that he was suspicious of the engineering operation while noticing the presence of Green Berets and Special Forces. His fears were realized when after drilling underground he came face-to-face with a 7-foot tall, stinky, gray alien.
Obviously he freaked out and grabbed a pistol he was carrying and shot and killed two aliens. Another alien shot some laser-plasma ball or whatever at him and blew off some of his fingers.
He was saved by a Green Beret who allegedly gave his life for him. In all, 60 human-people allegedly lost their lives that day at the "Alien-Human Battle of Dulce."
"There's a war under there and it's been going on since that time," he said. He spoke of 1,477 underground bases around the world, 129 of which were located in the United States. Each cost $17 billion or more.
He said the Black Budget, hidden from other U.S. government agencies and from the public, garners 25 percent of the gross national product. Military forces from multiple countries have been engaged in such warfare with aliens, he said.
In the video Jo Ann speaks about her knowledge of operations and secret meetings that these men were involved with. She shares information about numerous alien species, the secret space fleet, and battles with aliens on- and off-world.

Formation Cigar-shaped UFOs traveling through space next to the Orion Nebula
Formation Cigar-shaped UFOs traveling through space next to the Orion Nebula
On February 3, 2019 a sky-watcher using a telescope Skywhatcher 8” with camera ZWO-AS1174MM-USB3 captured a formation of three cigar-shaped UFOs traveling through space next to the Orion Nebula (M42)
The footage shows the Orion Nebula and surrounding space when suddenly a white colored large cigar-shaped UFO appears out of knowhere with two cigar-shaped UFOs on each side of the craft. The two UFOs are less visible, maybe they fly at a further distance from the white colored UFO.
Together they fly in a formation where a fourth cigar-shaped UFO follows at some distance behind the three huge alien craft.. Given the distance they cover in a very short time, the speed must be enormous.
With all the other older footage's of UFOs near the Orion Nebula, this footage is again proof that many of these interstellar alien spacecraft are present in the Orion Nebula sector.
The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion.
M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth.
Scott Kelly is a formerNASAastronaut who commanded the International Space Station (ISS) on Expedition 26,45 and 46. On March 27, 2015, Mr Kelly launched in Soyuz TMA-16M in what marked the beginning of a year in space. He detailed his journey on social media, posting regular updates.
However, one photo he snapped on board the ISS received more attention than the rest.
On November 15, Mr Kelly tweeted a photo of India from outer space, captioned: “Day 233. Once upon a #star over Southern India #GoodNight from @space_station! #YearInSpace.”
At first glance, the photo appeared to simply show the South Asian country lit up during the night.
However, space boffins were quick to notice a small, white object in the top right of the snap, that appeared out of place.
One reply read: “What is that in the upper right corner?”

Another added: “What is that in the TOP RIGHT-HAND CORNER?!”
A third questioned: “Is that a UFO on the top of the frame?”
And a four flat-out claimed: “Great shot of a UFO Scott.”
However, these theories were quickly debunked, with some revealing the “UFO” is actually part of the space station.

Today marks 31 years since the first “human satellite” was launched.
On February 7, 1984, Bruce McCandless became the first human to fly untethered in space when he exited the US space shuttle Challenger and manoeuvred using a rocket backpack.
McCandless orbited Earth in tangent with the shuttle at speeds greater than 17,500 miles per hour and flew up to 320 feet away from the Challenger.
After an hour and a half testing and flying the jet-powered backpack and admiring Earth, McCandless safely reentered the shuttle.
Disc-shaped UFO that causes condensation is a small but very interesting object in the photo. It shows what I believe is the process of some kind of condensation at the bottom of this craft. The special feature with UFOs and condensation is evident throughout my photos on site. Extraterrestrial vessels cause condensation as terrestrial aircraft´s do, just in a different way.
As you can see in the above picture, the disc-shaped object is very small. But thanks to high-resolution DSLR photography, we can magnify the image more than normal before the object gets screwed in the pixels.
So far so good. The disc-shaped UFO has been magnified to a very satisfying extent, but it´s still very faint in the above picture. Let´s bring it into Adobe Photoshop and use some filters. First filter I use is Auto Contrast with some extra Brightness, see below.
Finally, the disc appears with a metallic finish on top and black in the middle at the bottom. At the absolute bottom of this disc, white material, or a substance, is emitted or is just there stationary. That´s how I see it. You might see something else?
The last picture above was processed with Auto Tone in Photoshop and shows a clear metallic round object.
The pictures here originates from a photo investigation inside a secluded pasture where I had a creature UFO sighting on May 24. And because of that UFO sighting, I decided to visit the site again on May 25. I had my Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera with me and it produced 173 images and this UFO gallery with 43 hi-res UFO photos.
Disc-shaped UFO is a paraglider?
The white material or substance that is beneath the disc-shaped UFO has a strange shape. It is bent downwards away from the craft? One should think that a paraglider just passed below the object. Well, I did not see any paraglider while I was there. I have seen a paraglider in the area before but not with a white parachute. Even if the paraglider was there, the disc above would still be a mystery!
Because of the high-resolution photography, it would have revealed the paraglider him- or her self including the ropes connecting her/him to the parachute. So the thing below the disc-shaped UFO is NOT a paraglider but something else.
Disc-shaped UFO and condensation?
I have a few photos with UFOs that emits what looks like condensation and in different ways. Sometimes it looks like they are using a cloud to hide in and I wonder if they create clouds for that specific purpose? And sometimes it looks like they emit, or cause condensation like an aircraft does, but different.
If the disc-shaped UFO here really causes condensation I cannot know for sure? But something strange is happening beneath the craft and it is not something on the lens. It is ON the object. What could it be? A field? I adhere to that some objects have this cloud-white material on them or it is trailing them. Some kind of additional phenomenon is maybe evident here?
Explore the “Condensation”-TAG to see the other unidentified flying objects related to possible cloud creation and condensation.

The latest episode of History’s Project Blue Book covers one of the most significant UFO mysteries, Foo Fighters. However, remember, this is a fiction program, so although it is true World War II pilots saw strange light they called Foo Fighters, not much else in the episode is real history. Much of the rest of the show is full of conspiratorial intrigue and adventure. Luck for you, to find out about the actual events in history and the mythology behind the show, you have my weekly reviews. Read my latest review to find out more about the real Foo Fighters, and, among others things, mysterious messages allegedly from aliens.
The U.S. Air Force may have some explaining to do when it comes to UFOs, but what is happening to their pilots and crew who spot UFOs inProject Blue Bookis downright terrifying.
In “Foo Fighters,” we see the return of Henry Fuller, the pilot who was the witness of the first UFO encounter investigated by Hynek and Quinn. Fuller has gone nuts and has been stalking Mimi, seeking to speak with Hynek. Now she has Russiansanda crazy pilot stalking her.
We also find out that the secret keepers in the Air Force, including Quinn’s bosses, Valentine and Harding, are looking for Fuller because he seems to hold secrets they cannot allow to be revealed.
In one encounter police officers have with Fuller he is stammering incoherently about a string of numbers. Fuller avoids capture, but word gets back to Hynek who recognizes the numbers. They were displayed to him on a screen at the end of the first episode. In that encounter, Hynek chased a man in black to a building in an abandoned amusement park. At the end of the chase, Hynek found himself in a room with a projector that was displaying strange symbols and numbers.
Hynek checked his notes on that encounter, and the numbers matched Fuller’s. He recognized them as a radio frequency, and when he tuned in, he heard a voice with a warning. It repeated a message saying “the arrival is upon us.” Using radio equipment, Hynek tracked where the signal to a photographer’s studio. The photographer says she was paid to set up the radio transmitter by someone she did not know.
It turns out the transmitter was set up by a former Air Force pilot who was part of a group of former pilots who had seen UFOs during World War II. They called the UFOs Foo Fighters - yup, same name as the band. They described the UFOs as glowing orbs of light. They said when they reported the encounters; the Air Force did something to make them forget the incidents and gave them dishonorable discharges. The group eventually banded together and began trying to communicate with the aliens they suspected were flying the Foo Fighters.
Hynek, unsure of what the pilots saw, begins to suspect the Air Force was using mind control on the men to blank their memories. But what is the Air Force hiding?
Hynek had not shared the incident with the man in black to Quinn, but now that he felt he was beginning to piece things together and was comfortable trusting Quinn, he spilled the beans. They decide to investigate the abandoned amusement park, but what Hynek had seen before was removed.
While wandering alone, Hynek finds Fuller. He shows Fuller one of the pictures he had seen on the screen at the park. Fuller had a strange reaction and grabbed a can of fuel and ran off. He stops in an open area and then began pouring the fuel on his head. Realizing what is about to happen, Hynek ran to stop him but was tackled by Quinn. At that moment Fuller went up in flames. The symbol triggered some sort of self-destruct command that someone programmed into Fuller’s mind. Scary stuff.
The more fear-inducing this show gets, the more exciting it gets. Project Blue Book also teeters between suggesting the UFO phenomenon is extraterrestrial to suggesting it is the result of nefarious military research. All of this makes for an exciting show. However, at this point, it is not representing the real Project Blue Book. It’s also becoming very dark. The men in black are jerks, the Air Force are jerks, the aliens - if they even exist - are no help, and every town Quinn and Hynek go to they get threatened by locals portrayed as country bumpkins. Fortunately, the majority of what happened in this episode is made up.
The dark turn this episode has taken made this episode a little less enjoyable for me. I contacted Paul Hynek, one of the real Dr. Hynek’s sons to get his opinion on the show’s portrayal of his mother being embroiled in Russian espionage.
“It's part and parcel of the show being set smack dab during the middle of the cold war,” Paul wrote via email. “Of course this didn't happen as far as I know, but it's part of the show that viewers, should they care, will likely realize to have been dramatized.”
While the suspense of the series has been amped up, the dark conspiracy turn is a bit cliché. The excitement of Project Blue Book and Hynek’s involvement inspires a scientific curiosity into an unknown phenomenon that is wondrous and baffling, which is how the series began. Although I enjoy the references to real mythologies related to the UFO phenomenon, I hope the show does not devolve into yet another dark alien/government conspiracy show.
The Project Blue Book Files
Let’s start with the Foo Fighters. During World War II allied aircraft personnel occasionally reported spotting round aircraft following them, often at their wingtips. Pilots assumed these were weapons, but none had caused any damage. In the daylight they looked like metallic balls, at night they appeared as glowing orbs of various colors. Investigations into the Foo Fighters have mostly been inconclusive, although a couple of them did conclude the Germans must have had a secret remote-controlled weapon.
Pilots who spotted Foo Fighters were debriefed, and several of their stories made it into newspapers. None of the airmen were reprimanded, discharged, or brainwashed. However, there is a case in which an Air Force Colonel believes his men were debriefed and possibly drugged after a UFOencounter.
In 1980, on the evening of December 26, strange lights were seen in the Rendlesham Forest outside the gates of Bentwaters Royal Air Force base. Bentwaters is in the UK who leased the base to the U.S. Air Force at the time. Three security personnel were sent to investigate. They approached a brightly lit object. Fearful, one of the men stayed with the jeep. Another made it close to the object but stopped short of walking up to it. The third walked right up to the object and described seeing a triangular craft about 6 feet long hovering a few feet off the ground. He had time to circle it and take notes before it moved up above the tree line and took off at an incredible speed.
Deputy base commander Charles Halt was skeptical the lights in the forest were unexplainable. He believed there was a mundane answer and planned to investigate personally if the lights should return. He got his chance a couple of nights later. The lights were seen again, and he took some men into the forest. This time he witnessed the lights firsthand. One of the bright lights broke into several lights and flew into the night sky. Another of the lights maneuvered over the base’s weapons storage area and beamed a light into it. The object then moved towards him and his men and shone a light down in front of their feet. Unable to explain what he saw, Halt believes they encountered alien technology that night.
Halt says he learned years later that “OSI [Office of Special Investigations] operatives harshly interrogated five young airmen…who were key witnesses.” Halt says “the agents told them not to talk about the UFO events, or their careers would be in jeopardy.” And that “Drugs such as Sodium Pentothal…were administered during the interrogations…” His concern is that “the whole thing has had a damaging and lasting effect on the men involved.”
Another bit of strangeness in this episode that is reminiscent of a real-life bit of weirdness is the weird radio transmissions Hynek heard. The real version is even more dramatic. In 1977, British television was interrupted by an extraterrestrial message. On November 26, during Southern Television’s evening news the picture “wobbled” and the audio was taken over by a voice with a message from aliens.
“This is the voice of Vrillon, a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, speaking to you,” the voice pronounced. “For many years you have seen us as lights in the skies. We speak to you now in peace and wisdom as we have done to your brothers and sisters all over this, your planet Earth.”
The message continued to warn humans that we need to get rid of our weapons and take care of our planet, primarily as the earth was about to enter the Age of Aquarius. The announcement continued for nearly 6 minutes.
The incident is widely regarded as a hoax, but no one has ever claimed responsibility for the event, nor have investigators figured out how it was pulled off. Some, of cou}rse, think it was aliens. But if it was, we certainly did not heed their warning.
On April 12th, 1961, a Russian man named Yuri Gagarin made history aboard a Soviet Vostok 3KA-3 spacecraft. For years, the United States and Soviet Union had been using the barrier between our world and beyond as a benchmark to test each nation’s greatest technological and engineering advances, and on that day, Gagarin achieved an incredible victory for the communist nation: he flew in space.
The space race was about far more than national pride, however, it was truly about global supremacy. Each nation recognized the final frontier as both a tactical advantage for military operations and a public relations necessity – competition put the American people behind spending the money required to go up against the Red giant, and victory would benefit morale nationwide. However, the Soviets did not need the public’s approval for expenditures, opting instead to announce each mission toward the unknown only after its successful completion, leaving their people under the impression that the Soviet program was incapable of failure.
In recent years, however, stories have begun to emerge about failed Soviet space missions and their policy of ensuring the media, the public, and their American competition never learned of their missteps.
Photographs surfaced in the 1970s depicting early Cosmonauts (Soviet Astronauts) at work and on vacation with one another, but because of confusion regarding which photographs had been published, Soviet news managers accidentally released never before seen versions of the images. When previously published images were compared to the images that were released in the seventies, inconsistencies began to surface. Most notable among these issues were missing Cosmonauts; the Soviet government had actually airbrushed entire people out of group photographs, opting to pretend these men were never a part of the program to begin with.
When confronted about these alterations, the Soviet Government made a number of fumbled attempts at explaining why they felt the need to forge the images released to the public. Finally, in the final years of Soviet reign, Gorbachev instructed Soviet journalists and historians to determine what truly happened to these “missing” and omitted men. Their research revealed that most had been expelled from the program for behavior that made them unsuitable to be seen as heroes for the nation or had developed medical conditions that prohibited them from participating in space flight. According to reports, the Soviet government had opted to remove them from records completely rather than explain away their failures in public.
All of this did little to sway American beliefs that the Soviets, even years after America claimed victory in the space race by landing on the moon, had more to hide than they were letting on. While some Americans have gone so far as to travel to Russia to meet with some of these redacted cosmonauts to verify Soviet stories, not all of the men can be accounted for officially.
American author and former NASA mission control scientist, James Oberg, was one of the first to notice the inconsistencies in the Soviet images and, although he has written at length about his beliefs regarding these “lost” cosmonauts in books like “Uncovering Soviet Disasters,” he seems fairly convinced in recent years that the Soviets were telling the truth about these redactions, and that most, if not all, of these missing cosmonauts were simply removed from the space program photographs to protect their flawless reputation.
Possibly the most damning, or at least the most controversial, evidence to suggest that the Soviet space program was not nearly as flawless as they contended at the time, were reports of a pair of Italian brothers that recorded radio transmissions prior to and after Gagarin’s historic flight that seemed to indicate manned orbital missions going awry.
The Judica-Cordiglia brothers were amateur hand radio operators that released a number of recordings in 1963 that they claimed were recorded during the Soviet’s most intense period of attempts to put a cosmonaut in space; attempts which they claim began in 1960, nearly a year prior to Gagarin’s successful mission.
According to the brothers, in May of 1960 they recorded a Morse code message indicating that a manned Soviet spacecraft had drifted dangerously off course. Then, on November 28th, 1960, another Morse code signal, this time an SOS distress call, was recorded as another spacecraft reportedly left Earth’s orbit. In February of 1961, they recorded a cosmonaut audibly suffocating to death while attempting to contact mission control, then in April, they tracked Gagarin’s vessel as it made three successful orbits around Earth before reentering. The Soviets announced Gagarin’s success three days after the brothers claim to have tracked his flight path.
The recordings did not stop there, however. In May, the brothers claimed to have recorded another craft’s distress call as it slipped out of orbit, then again in October and November. In November of 1963, the brothers said they recorded a female cosmonaut pleading for help as her craft burned up during reentry. A final death, according to these brothers, occurred in April of 1964, again due to failed heat shielding during the return flight.
There are confirmed reports of Soviets dying in their pursuit of space flight, but these reports were often not confirmed until after the fall of the Soviet Union and in the face of overwhelming evidence. Gagarin’s own best friend died in an orbital mission. According to claims, he was aware that his mission was likely to fail due to a number of structural issues on the vessel, but opted to fly anyway to prevent his friend and backup pilot, the Soviet hero Gagarin, from having to take the risk. While it is confirmed that Vladimir Kamarov died during the failed re-entry of his Soyuz 1 capsule, rumors continue to surface about his final minutes, in which many claim he railed against the Soviet regime and faulted them for his impending death.
Twenty-two Americans have died as a result of our own efforts to extend mankind’s reach beyond our tiny blue dot. The task is incredibly dangerous and the men and women of every nation’s space program should be heralded for their bravery, but if claims about Soviet efforts to erase the lives of men and women that were lost in pursuit of victory over America are even partially true, it would add a dark lens to how we perceive all Soviet accomplishments during the era.
