Golega has long-standing and deep-rooted equestrian tradition, and is now one of the leading exponents of Lusitanian equestrian culture.
As a result of its history, Golega maintains the National Horse Fair, the former St Martins Fair, which dates back to the 16th century, as well as the International Lusitano Horse Fair.
Over the years the National Horse Fair has diversified grown to include several aspects besides horse-dealing and the presentation of each breeder's best products. Nowadays the Fair holds commercial, sporting, cultural and tourist events, focusing especially on the Lusitano horse. The Fair's programme includes such activities as a show by the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art and other equestrian centres, the National Dressage Championship, the National Horse Riding Championship, the Steeplechase Competition, the Horse Riding Raid, the National Meeting of Equestrian Training as Scholastic Sport, and other horse-related artistic activities.
Giving mares their rightful place in the limelight, since 1998 Golega has held a fair specifically dedicated to the presentation of mares. During this event, which is usually held in mid-May, mares are available for trading and also take part in sporting events.
Golega benefits from wide-ranging horse-related business activities, from trade, training, sports and culture, to leisure, numerous private stud farms, equestrian centres (with several education programmes), equipment and services for horses.
Golega's customs and traditions are also well worth exploring. lts landmarks include churches (15th and 16th century), chapels, manor houses and a 19th- century photography studio and laboratory, built by Carlos Relvas, the only one in the world and a pioneer both in Portugal and internationally, as well as the interesting natural reserve included in the international network of biosphere reserves (UNESCO), Paul de Boquilobo.
