“Strange” Signal From Star Triggers SETI Investigation—Much To Scientists’ Dismay
A strong signal detected over a year ago from the Hercules constellation is now being assessed. While astronomers doubt that it came from an advanced extraterrestrial civilization, they think it's worth having a look (if only to quell the rumors).
THE MYSTERIOUS BLIP
In May 15, 2015, a strong signal was detected by the RATAN-600 radio telescope in Russia. The transmission came from the direction of a star called HD164595, located around 95 light-years away from Earth in the Hercules constellation, and astronomers think this “strange” signal is worth investigating…for aliens?

To back up a bit: One interesting detail about the star is that it is pretty much like our Sun: it’s 99% the Sun’s mass and has a temperature only 12 Kelvin hotter than the Sun. It’s metallicity is almost the same as the Sun’s, and it’s only 100 million years younger. In terms of universe figures, that’s not a big age gap.
What’s even more intriguing is the fact that the signature detected came at a frequency consistent with that of an intentional transmission, sparking astronomers’ interest enough to circulate the readings with their peers and sending at least two research groups from SETI the (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) looking to the skies to track the star.
Studying the mysterious signal also made its way onto the agenda for the IAA (International Academy of Astronautics) SETI Permanent Committee’s meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico, which is set for this September 27th.
PROBABLY NOT ALIENS
As many publications have already noted, if the signal did come from an alien beacon, it would have been from a Kardashev Type II civilization (the kind of culture that can harness the energy from a whole star). “If that beacon is transmitting radio waves in all directions, the energy it would need to produce is a whopping 1020 watts,” notes SETI astronomer Seth Shostak. “It’s hundreds of times more than all the energy falling on the Earth from sunlight,” Shostak clarifies.
Yet, the possibility that the signal came from an advanced civilization in an attempt to make their presence known (or indeed, came from aliens at all) is low. “The signal may be real, but I suspect it’s not ET. There are other possibilities for a wide-band signal such as this, and they’re caused by natural sources (or even terrestrial interference),” Shostak wrote in an email to GeekWire.
And this case is especially marred because the Russian observatory waited over a year to announce the detection.

“Standard SETI protocols call for confirmation of possible signals from a separate observatory. This helps ensure that the original signal didn’t arise from a technical glitch in the original observatory, and it helps rule out a hoax perpetuated by some enterprising graduate students targeting a SETI experiment,” Doug Vakoch, president of San Francisco-based METI International, noted.
Moreover, a member of the SETI team has recently posted a response which asserts that that they are “unimpressed” with the paper from the Russian team (and that’s putting it mildly):
I’m sure that many of you have seen the news reports of a “SETI signal” detected from the star HD 164595
I was one of the many people who received the email with the subject “Candidate SETI SIGNAL DETECTED by Russians from star HD 164595 by virtue of RATAN-600 radio telescope.” Since the email did come from known SETI researchers, I looked over the presentation. I was unimpressed. In one out of 39 scans that passed over the star showed a signal at about 4.5 times the mean noise power with a profile somewhat like the beam profile. Of course SETI@home has seen millions of potential signals with similar characteristics, but it takes more than that to make a good candidate. Multiple detections are a minimum criterion.
Because the receivers used were making broad band measurements, there’s really nothing about this “signal” that would distinguish it from a natural radio transient (stellar flare, active galactic nucleus, microlensing of a background source, etc.) There’s also nothing that could distinguish it from a satellite passing through the telescope field of view. All in all, it’s relatively uninteresting from a SETI standpoint.
But, of course, it’s been announced to the media. Reporters won’t have the background to know it’s not interesting. Because the media has it, and since this business runs on media, everyone will look at it. ATA is looking at it. I assume Breakthrough will look at it. Someone will look at it with Arecibo, and we’ll be along for the ride. And I’ll check the SETI@home database around that position. And we’ll all find nothing. It’s not our first time at this rodeo, so we know how it works.
The research should be completed soon, and we will know more at that time (but don’t count on ET).

To measure the level of a civilization’s advancement, the Kardashev scale focuses on the amount of energy that a civilization is able to harness. Obviously, the amount of power available to a civilization is linked to how widespread the civilization is (you can’t harness the power of a star if you are confined to your home planet, and you certainly can’t harness the power of a galaxy if you can’t even get out of your solar system).
In short, according to the Kardashev scale, Interstellar Travelers = Advanced society
In a previous article, we offered an overview of the various civilization types: Subglobal Cultures, Galactic Cultures, Multiverse Cultures etc. We’ve already discussed a Subglobal Culture. Today, I want to talk about what it would be like to live in a Type I Civilization—A Planetary Culture.
I know that this type of culture doesn’t sound too terribly interesting. A Planetary Culture…a culture that lives on a planet. Wow. Fascinating. But don’t be so quick to judge, as such civilizations are generally far more advanced than we are.
EARTH: ABOVE AND BEYOND
While it’s true that such cultures are limited to the energy that can be obtained from a single world, that they are stuck on a single rock, Type I Civilizations have harnessed the power of theentire planet itself (estimated at about ~4 x 10^19 erg/sec.).
This means that their technological advancement isn’t limited by the availability of fossil fuels.
So in essence, if you lived in a Type I Civilization, you wouldn’t need to worry about earthquakes, tornadoes, or other catastrophic phenomena. Horrifying natural disasters like Pompeii, the 2004 South Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina…all of these cataclysms would be things of the past.
Ultimately, harnessing the power of the planet means controlling weather patterns, plate tectonics, oceanic currents, controlling volcanoes…the list goes on and on. As such, Type I Civilizations are able to manipulate (and, in many ways, manufacture) their own world.
You want rain? You can program it, so no more droughts. And no droughts means little to no starvation. This is a very good thing.
SO. WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE?
Of course, exploiting the power of a planet takes work. And you certainly can’t do it if your civilization is comprised of a few measly individuals who are confined to one tiny continent. Consequently, if you lived in a Type I civilization, you would be part of a vast population. Cities would stretch across the globe. Literally. Your world would no longer have countries or nations; it would be a single City-Empire. All peoples would act as one. They would be one…a truly global culture.
This is an inspiring and a harrowing thought.
The optimist will assert that Type I Civilizations will have ended war and genocide through peaceful processes. The pessimist will assert that Type I Civilizations will have ended war and genocide through war and genocide—by killing all those who dissented and opposed the majority.
Regardless of the path taken, the main point remains: A Type I Civilization will be a single, global culture that uses a network of highly advanced planetary-wide technologies to harness the total energy output of the Earth. For any world plagued by war and infighting, the large-scale projects required to attain Type I status will simply be out of reach.
WHEN WILL WE GET THERE?
Obviously, Planetary Civilizations are more advanced than we are. But, with any luck (if we don’t blow ourselves to oblivion, or turn the Earth into an uninhabitable wasteland), we will reach this stage in 100 to 200 years. So maybe your grand-kids will be around to see it; there’s some hope in that (assuming you have kids).
But there are problems that we will need to overcome if we are to attain the vast amount of energy generation needed to advance to a Type I Civilization. In order to reach Type I status using current modes of technology, we would need to essentially coat the entire surface of the planet with man-made structures. Such an enterprise would be astronomically expensive…and insanely detrimental to the environment. Moreover, we lack the material needed to create such large-scale structures.
On top of all this, nearly all forms of energy — electrical, thermal, mechanical, nuclear — they all return to the biosphere in a single degraded form: Heat. And heat is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Without it, we would all be very, very dead. But too much of a good thing is, well, not a good thing. Thermal pollution can rapidly reach catastrophic proportions. As more and more energy (heat) is liberated, the global temperature begins to rise, and the precarious energy balance of the biosphere begins to suffer irreversible damage.
At what point will this ultimate catastrophe occur?
On Earth, it is estimated that our pale blue dot will turn into a dry dead inferno long before we reach the energy levels needed to reach a Type I Civilization. The main point: The coming days will test us. There is a limit to every kind of energy production. At least, there is a limit if we don’t want to kill ourselves. So if we want to really advance, if we hope to boldly go where no one has gone before, then we are going to need to invest in new technologies and new means of production. We are going to need educated individuals to conduct research (I’m looking at you).
Welcome back to Geek.com’s Origin of the species. Each time out we’ll take a look at one of our favorite fantasy, science fiction or horror races or species, delving deep into history, fiction, mythology and etymology. Check out our previous installments on dwarfs, vampires, and robots!
Aliens run the gamut. Which gamut? Every gamut. Decades of pop culture have taught us that aliens can be pretty much anything, from humans with wacky heads to insect-like monsters to floating clouds of gas. But if you ask an average person to describe an alien, or just what comes to mind when they hear talk of abductions or close-calls with UFOs, chances are they’ll tell you about short grey humanoids with big heads, small mouths, and expressionless black eyes: Grey aliens or just Greys for short.
Greys are very much embedded in the human psyche, with a full 43% of alien encounters in these United States said to involve them. The way we see it, there are three reasons for why this could be the case. The first, and most useful for fiction, is the fact that aliens exist and that just happens to be what they look like. Of course, that’s something best left for our series on conspiracy theories, as we’re sure the Geek.com audience wouldn’t buy the outlandish idea that an alien race would evolve to look so similar to humans, right? Right.
So that leaves us with two other – somewhat connected – possibilities. One is that like werewolves or vampires, grey aliens are a manifestation of deep-rooted racial memories, the fruit that ripens on the vine of our collective unconsciousness. The other possibility is that Greys are nothing more than a fad that got picked up and elaborated upon before taking on a life of its own, a meme from the decades before the word even existed. Before we make a call one way or the other, however, let’s take a look back at where the Greys came from.
For many ufologists and true believers, the answer to that question is a deadpanned “Zeta Reticuli.” Reason being is that, according to some string-and-bead-based model-making by an amateur astronomer, that is supposedly the origin of the aliens that allegedly abducted Barney and Betty Hill. Their story, which they claimed happened in 1961, became the first widely reported abduction incident, and featured a group of aliens that, while not totally in line with the contemporary conception of Greys, weren’t too far off either.
This particular abduction story kicked off a myriad of other similar claims, many of which, as you’ve probably guessed, featured small, grey humanoid aliens. The origins of the grey aliens stretch back far further than the 1960s, however, as H.G. Wells, in an 1893 article, described a futuristic evolution of mankind that was remarkably similar to Grey aliens. He picked up on the notion in a number of subsequent works which depicted the grey skin, big head, and large black eye-having creatures as being extra-terrestrial in origin.
Though Grey aliens can be spotted throughout pop culture – including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and even Star Wars – business really picked up during the 1980s. Reason being is that was the decade in which the Greys were first linked with one of the most famous alien conspiracy theories: The Roswell UFO incident. The claim was that the Roswell wreckage contained not only otherworldly technology but also the bodies of actual Grey aliens.
That rumor and belief spread unchecked throughout the 80s, during which time the Grey aliens became a crucial component of contemporary belief in UFOs. But in the 90s, the Grey aliens became even more central to the beliefs of not just amateur ufologists, but all manner of conspiracy theorists, due largely to the popularity of The X-Files.
The X-Files smashed together countless different conspiracy theories, tying the Grey aliens into a nefarious New World Order-esque organization. As one of the most popular television shows on the air, the show, and its depiction of Grey aliens, was enormously influential, leading to the conflation of Greys and pretty much every other wacky conspiracy theory or New Age belief you could possibly imagine. And given the type of people who go all in on such things, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the Greys were latched onto by hordes of 90s ravers and drug culture adherents.
So, where does this leave us? There are a few different theories as to the origins of the Grey alien trope, including the idea that the creatures represent an idealized version of traits that read as “intelligent,” as well as claims that they line up with what a mother’s face might look like to the brain of a still developing infant. While there’s nothing to completely discount either theory, there’s also not a whole lot other than speculation and circumstantial evidence to support them.
And for what it’s worth, I’m inclined to believe that any theories to the deeper meaning of Grey aliens are a lot of malarkey. That’s because unlike say, werewolves and vampires—the belief in which goes back hundreds, if not thousands, of years—Grey aliens only really started popping up in the 20th century. If there was something baked into us to envision the little bastards, why didn’t they start showing up sooner? And why does their appearance seem largely limited to Europe and former European colonies?
Similarly, prior to Grey aliens really taking hold in the second half of the 20th century, there were other default looks for aliens. The most notable of these being the bug-eyed monster, a trope that was once the most popular way to depict an alien invader, showing up in countless movies and pulp magazines. There was even a more regional variation on the “standard” alien, the tall, statuesque, blond humanoids known as Nordic aliens, which were particularly popular in Europe during the 1950s.
So, while the Grey aliens certainly might seem, due to their ubiquity and frankly, excellent design, like some kind of vestigial memory from times long past, or the manifestation of some deep-rooted, primal fear, it seems more likely that they’re something just as powerful: A cliché.

The former US intelligence contractor went into hiding after carrying out a major leak of information that was initially published in the Guardian newspaper.

Only in 2013 had the US publicly admitted about the existence of the infamous Area 51. Its name is also mentioned in an official statement of Barack Obama, but although the veil of secrecy appeared to be falling off, the CIA refused to offer any additional details on this subject.
Now that the beans have been partially spilled, here are some less known facts about the notorious military base:
1. It had various names along the years, some used for cover up reasons and some for luring unaware working force to the remote area of Nevada where it is located. It was known as ‘Paradise Ranch’, and referred to as a rustic resort. Other names were ‘Home Base’, ‘Water Town’, and ‘Dreamland’, none of this sending suspicions about a top-secret governmental facility. The CIA insists that the correct name for it is either Homey Airport, or Groom Lake, but we all know it as Area 51, a name first mentioned in a CIA document from the Vietnam war.
2. Decades after the Cold War, reports have surfaced revealing mounting evidence of the existence of the A-12 spy plane – an aircraft with advanced flight capabilities developed inside Area 51. According to the existing documents, the plane could reach speeds up to 3,500 km/h and remain undetected from ground radars.
3.Staff only worked during the night when building the 9,000 foot long runway for the testing of A-12, so that it wouldn’t draw any suspicious eyes, and no clear pictures or video could be taken.
4.In April 1955, when Dwight Eisenhower was president, control of the area was given to CIA for developing and testing a scouting aircraft in a classified project named Aquatone.
5.You could have lobsters, oysters and even steak on a weakly basis at the Swedish buffet at Area 51.
6.Access inside the massive military base and a large amount of terrain that surrounds it is strictly forbidden for anyone not directly involved, but that didn’t stop controversial material of extraterrestrial beings, fallen UFOs and other anomalies from surfacing from time to time.
7.There is a strip of land called The Nellis Range near the Groom Lake facility used for testing weapons and technology vital for US military. During the Cold War, the Atmoic Energy Comission (AEC) supervised several atmospheric nuclear detonations for the sol purpose of developing novel atomic technology. The Air Force has publicly admitted its existence, but all activities are still classified.

8.A few reports suggest that the military exploited the secrecy agreement surrounding area 51, including the fact that people working there had to remain silent about what was going on at all times. In this acceptance, huge amounts of toxic wastes were dumped at the site. In 1996, after Robert Frost died because of the toxic fumes inhaled during working hours, his wife Helen took the matter to court, but she didn’t reach any consent because the case was dismissed as a result of national security considerations. Other rumors speak of how other military facilities were illegally disposing their toxic trash at Area 51 because of its remote location and because the base is apparently exempt of any environmental laws.
9.After test pilot Ken Williams ejected from the cockpit before his plane had crashed, he landed near a pickup truck. The owners offered to take him to the wreckage, but he immediately refused and suggested them to leave the area immediately because the craft had radioactive material on board.
10.Most reports concerning UFOs between the 50s and 60s were written by pilots that were constantly scouting the area. A recent study showed that 70% of people living in the U.S. believe in the existence of UFOs and extraterrestrial being, and most of them suspect the two are related in a way to Area 51.

Most people ‘in the know’ realize that NASA is just part of the military industrial complex, but a recent open admission on mainstream news that “there are indications of alien life” is likely the beginning of a bid to get your undivided attention before full-forced disclosure ensues.
Most people already believe what NASA Chief Scientist Ellen Stofan states:
I think we’re going to have strong indications of life beyond Earth within a decade . . .I think we’re going to have definitive evidence within 20-30 years.”
It isn’t going to take that long if we open our eyes.
Stofan goes on to say:
“We’re on the verge of things that people have wondered about for millennia. Within all of our lifetimes we’re going to understand that there is life on other bodies in the solar system. We’re going to understand the implications of that for life here on Earth.”
What we’re going to understand is that our ‘secret’ government has been hiding this fact for ages. In an effort to transition the US and other countries through its reach to a cabal-run oligarchy, our shadow government has been lying about off-planet corporate slavery rings, alien abductions, benevolent beings who can only do so much until our collective consciousness elevates, and much, much more.
William Cooper, among others, tried to disclose the true purpose of NASA, but he was exterminated. His death, among thousands of others, will not be in vain.
We will learn that aside from extraterrestrial beings visiting our planet and many different ET races tinkering with our DNA over millennia, there are ancient humanoid races that are more than 10 million years old.

We will also learn that chemtrails and GMOs were the LEAST of plans made for us ‘sheeple’ and ‘useless eaters’ by a Luciferian cabal, and that President Harry Truman signed a document with certain ETs that allowed the ‘elite’ to conduct highly technological experiments with intelligence gained from these ETs in exchange for looking the other way when certain humans were abducted for ET experiments.
We will learn that we are not helpless, as we have been programmed to believe. We are, in fact, a rare humanoid race that has an incredible range of emotion and creative power. We will learn that our minds and emotions can either fuel chaos on this planet, or restore it to its rightful place of peace and cooperation, of care for others at least as much as ourselves.
We will learn that our ascension into infinitely peaceful beings is indeed possible, and it has been described in countless books, many of which have been suppressed along with UFO information.

Op 27 augustus werd er in het Engelse graafschap Wiltshire een bijzondere graancirkel aangetroffen.
Met een symbool dat we allemaal kennen.
De boeren die eigenaar zijn van het land waar deze graancirkel is verschenen, hebben laten weten dat ze absoluut geen bezoekers op hun land willen zien.
Ze hebben gedreigd de cirkel compleet te vernietigen wanneer ze mensen daar aantreffen en bovendien hebben ze aangifte gedaan wegens moedwillige vernieling bij de lokale politie.
Hoe die verhaal moeten gaan halen bij de buitenaardsen die de cirkel hebben gemaakt, is niet helemaal duidelijk.
Alhoewel het voor veel inwoners in ons land een negatieve uitstraling heeft en doet denken aan Adolf Hitler en de Nazi’s is de oorsprong van het hakenkruis of swastika heel positief:
Bij het zien van een Swastika gaan bij veel mensen de haren overeind staan. Dit oud-boeddhistische symbool lijkt namelijk precies op een hakenkruis! Helaas waren de Duitsers niet zo origineel en hebben zij dit teken gestolen en letterlijk gekopieerd van het boeddhisme en hindoeïsme. Hier wordt het teken ook niet hakenkruis genoemd, maar krijgt het een veel sierlijkere naam: Swastika.
De oorsprong van Swastika
De oudste swastika’s die zijn gevonden komen uit 2500 voor Christus. De Swastika werd toen veel gebruikt om een Boeddha mee te versieren. Het teken werd veelal op de borst of voeten van de boeddhabeelden afgebeeld. Later werden ook Swastika’s gevonden in Amerika, afkomstig van de oude indianen en ook bij de Maya’s, Azteken en zelfs de Vikingen werd dit symbool al gebruikt.
De betekenis
Het Duitse hakenkruis heeft qua betekenis overigens niks te maken met een van deze oude culturen en religies. Tijdens de tweede wereld oorlog stond het kruis symbool voor het fascisme en nog steeds wordt het teken gebruikt bij hele rechtse ideologieën.
Bij het boeddhisme wordt de Swastika gebruikt als zonnerad. En worden met de ‘haken’ de vier windstreken benoemd. Dit heilige symbool wordt gezien als de cyclus van het leven. Een andere betekenis bij het Hindoeisme is dat het symbool staat voor het kosmische bewustzijn en het scheppende principe. Oftewel de voortgang van het leven en zijn evolutie.

Its big, about as big as our moon, and its shiny...like its surface is metallic, reflecting the light off of it. The shape is unusual like a pyramid. This object should not be this close to the sun without burning up. It should be impossible, but its there in a NASA SOHO image. I saw other photos of the same location from 13:00...6 min before and from 13:13...7 minutes after this photo was taken. The UFO is gone...no moon size object could possible just disappear unless it had partial light speed capability. There is no known propulsion that could get this moon size object far enough from the sun in just 6 minutes. It may have been entering the sun, because if it was leaving from the sun, there should have been a trail following it, but there is none, therefore, I know it was entering it. Scott C. A Georgia witness at Woodbine reported watching a silver disc UFO hovering under 30 feet off the ground along the Satilla River near I-95, according to testimony in Case 78596 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness was northbound along I-95 at the Woodbine exit, pictured, when the object was first seen.

The witness was driving northbound along I-95 just past the Woodbine exit near the Satilla River at 4:30 p.m. on August 20, 2016, when the incident occurred.
“I saw a huge silver, highly polished disc hovering over the marsh next to the treeline about 20-30 feet off the ground,” the witness stated. “The object seemed to be as big as a minivan.”
The witness wanted to get closer to the object.

“I wanted to turn around, but the next exit was 10 minutes down and would be too long to get back. It might be gone. I didn’t turn around.”
The witness was upset over the sighting.
“I was freaked out wondering what the heck I saw and why was it in the marsh. I just so happened to look that way and saw it before I drove past. It was tucked back, almost hiding behind the treeline on the highway.”
Woodbine is a city in and the county seat of Camden County, GA, population 1,412. Georgia Field Investigators Jeremy Haslam and Brion Trainor are investigating. Australia outback is large and mostly uninhabited, so its only logical that the US gov asked Australia to a lot a large amount of land to aliens for their personal use (underground bases)...probably land that is a preserve, with no hunting, no living on, no harming the trees and such. Its a well known fact that the US works on its top secret aircraft outside of the US in order to confuse the public. And the USAF probably got some new tech from them. News states: A GIANT triangular UFO “100 times bigger than a plane” that emerged on the Tablelands on the weekend has shocked a young family. Kyle Mathiot was playing with sparklers with his two young boys and partner Deborah Price in the front yard of their Herberton home on Saturday about 7.30pm when they spotted something strange in the distance. “I notice one light up in the sky and it was way, way too big to be a star,” Mr Mathiot said.
“I went to get my partner’s phone, and started taking pictures of it and all of a sudden there was another two lights, and it was in the shape of a triangle, with a big light up the front and another two lights up the back.” Mr Mathiot, 21, took several photos of the aircraft as it hovered in the same place for about half an hour before it disappeared. “It was zipping around like no plane or drone we’ve ever seen,” he said. “The lights were about two centimetres apart in the sky. “It had to be a massive object. “It definitely wasn’t a drone. It was 100 times bigger than a plane.” He said he was amazed by the sheer size of the unknown object. “I kind of like that type of stuff. I’m kind of a believer but I’m not freaked out, just in shock,” he said. “I’ve never had an experience like that.” An Australian Defence Force spokesman said there was no evidence of military aircraft in the Herberton area at the time of the sighting. Alec Brimacombe, the Far Northern investigator for UFO Research Queensland, said Mr Mathiot’s photos certainly appeared to show a triangular object. “I’m not aware of any reports from Herberton but there were sightings of smaller objects around Tinaroo last year,” he said.
“Certainly there are a great many reports of flying triangular objects seen around the world.” He said in other cases, the large size of triangular UFOs was often mentioned. “If the object was sighted with the naked eye, then it cannot be a photographic anomaly,” he said. “The three points of light suggest a structured triangular object or craft. “As to what it is, we just cannot say. “It sounds too large for a drone and the zigzag movements are not characteristic of planes – civilian or military.”

This is the full extended version of the film I had the honor of making for the National Space Society to promote NASAs New Horizons spacecraft and its historic reconnaissance mission to Pluto and its system of moons on July 14 2015 - the very first exploration of this system in human history. I got to work closely with the missions principal investigator Alan Stern and I am grateful for his and the rest of his team's confidence in me to make this film.

The Solar Express is a space train that would be designed and used to ferry humans, supplies and minerals between celestial bodies and space stations in our solar system. It would run non-stop, so smaller vessels would need to catch the train when it passed by.
The Background
In space, the most expensive portions of travel are the acceleration and deceleration phases. The energy required for those portions is tremendous, especially for something as heavy as a space train. In addition, if you were to start hauling cargo, it would become very expensive. However, once the train reached its cruising speed, its energy consumption would be minimal. That’s the idea behind the Solar Express concept. It would never stop; instead, space wagons / capsules would rendezvous with it.
How It Works
The Solar Express would take the form of a series of aligned cylinders. Each cylinder would have a length of at least 50 meters, and one train would be composed of six of them placed in a straight line. These cylinders/torus would be split into four cargo bays and could be swapped in-flight with the help of maintenance robots.
The Solar Express would first accelerate with rocket boosters. Stored fuel contained in the vessel’s core could be used to make course adjustments. The train wouId also use the force of gravity to slingshot around planets or moons. The speed of the Solar Express could be set at 1% of the speed of light, or about 3 000km/s.
Huge solar arrays located along the train’s path could be used to capture solar energy and transfer it by laser to supercapacitors. Water harvested from comets or small moons would be used for humans living on the train and transported to other stations. The harvested water could also be used to create hydrogen and propellant, but the main propulsion system should take the form of an ion thrusters.
Mobile Cargo Bays (MCBs) and other spacecraft would allow for transhipment between celestial bodies (planets, moons, asteroids) and the trains. These vessels could use different types of propulsion to rendezvous with the Solar Express. They would need to match the speed of the train to attach and carry on their transhipment.
The Solar Express would be used to transport material, minerals, vessels and even people living in sections under gravity. Of course, on the train they wouldn’t suffer from acceleration or decceleration. A large ‘space city’ would rotate around the longitudinal axis and provide artificial gravity inside so that humans could walk and live there during the long months of travelling.
The faster the Solar Express moves, the more expensive it will be to catch it. As you can imagine, the cost per ton is important, much like parcel shipping services. Some Solar Express trains could be used to make large loops (between distant planets), while others would be assigned shorter routes and their speed will vary.
What It’s Used For
Obviously, there is a lot to consider, starting with dimensions, masses, speed, energy, etc. How do you control such a complex vehicle? The general idea here is to devise a system to transport minerals, materials, and humans from one place to the other in our solar system. The Solar Express is a basic idea and we would like to know how we could improve it.
The Designer
I would like to Olivier Péraldi who helped me developed this concept along with Boris Schwarzer, who created the renderings of the Solar Express. Boris is based in Michigan, U.S.A. He went to the College of Creative Studies. He currently works as a contractual designer for the Ford Motor Company. Boris also created the images of the Urban Link driverless electric tuk-tuk and the Snowrama II snowmobile concepts.

Imaginactive founder Charles Bombardier released a concept for a space train that never stops: it cuts down on energy required by eliminating the acceleration and deceleration phases which take up most fuel. The Solar Express will pick up passengers and cargo at specific points where it will meet up with other smaller shuttles so it doesn't have to land (and accelerate) all over again.
SPACE TRAIN
It takes between three to six months for a probe to reach Mars from Earth. A new concept space train called Solar Express is challenging that time frame: it would, hypothetically, be able to transport people and cargo from earth to Mars in less than two days.
Imaginactive founder, Charles Bombardier, and his team aim to create Solar Express in a way were it could travel at around 1% the speed of light, which is 3,000 km (1,864 miles) per second. At this rate, a trip to the moon would only take seven hours.
The concept started out with identifying what makes space travel expensive and inefficient. “In space, the most expensive portions of travel are the acceleration and deceleration phases. In addition, if you were to start hauling cargo, it would become very expensive,” he said on their website.
Solar Express plans to circumvent these inconveniences by eliminating the acceleration and deceleration phase—it will never stop once it’s up there. Instead, it will move back and forth in space as smaller capsules containing cargo and passengers dock onto it while still in motion.
Bombardier says: “once the train reached its cruising speed, its energy consumption would be minimal. That’s the idea behind the Solar Express concept. It would never stop; instead, space wagons/capsules would rendezvous with it.” The space train will use the momentum it gained from its initial launch, and rely partially on gravity thereafter, reducing the need to use fuel. It would, hypothetically, also be able to harness solar energy and pick up water from celestial bodies, which will be used by those on board and well as being converted into fuel.
AMBITION IS THE NEW NORMAL
Seeing as this is just a concept, there are a lot of details that would still need to be figured out. Imaginactive, being a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring innovative, out-of-the-box concepts, encourages and welcomes innovators to think up crazy ideas—and then figure out details after. In fact, they are continuously on the lookout for more inventors and proposals are open to everyone.
To be clear, this is just an ambitious concept. The science and development to make this possible are nowhere near the levels of certainty that would be required to actually get this concept off the ground.
While the concept seems like a moonshot, at the rate space technology is developing, can we really, definitively, say it’s impossible? Besides, we’ve regularly seen science-fiction turn into reality.
Jorge Rigoboulos doesn't care if you don't believe him; he knows when he was a 10-year-old boy he saw a circular-shaped object with lights on it that flew across the sky.
"It was impressive because it was so close," the now-48-year-old said Saturday. "It is true what I saw."
It may have been the first time the Miami man saw an unidentified flying object in the sky, but he said it wasn't the last. Just four years, ago he says he saw another set of lights darting around the Florida sky, only reinvigorating his interest in the unknown.
"It's something that attracts me," Rigoboulos said.
He's not alone in his quest for information about what else—or who else—could live in this solar system or another dimension. Rigoboulos was one of nearly 500 people expected to attend the annual MUFON Symposium.
MUFON, short for the Mutual UFO Network, is a science-based organization that investigates and researches the phenomenon of the existence of aliens and their connection or contact with Earth.
This year's event, "UFOs: From our Oceans to Outer Space,"ends Sunday at the Hilton Lake Buena Vista Hotel near Walt Disney World.
Symposium attendees range from true believers and UFO enthusiasts to skeptics and those determined to debunk any finding of extraterrestrial life.
"Hollywood has always painted this as an X-Filey, sensationalized subject matter," said Morgan Beall, Florida's MUFON state director.
Beall said the importance of the event is to show attendees, including the skeptics, that the work being done isn't about the stereotypical big-eyed, green-skinned alien.
"There is that ridicule factor, that giggle factor that's still out there that shouldn't be because it's actually a very, very serious subject matter," he said. "And, if real, think of the implications."
Shari Gackstatter, owner of Tempe, Ariz.- based Star Woman Crystals, said the event is important to bring together like-minded people, giving them a safe space to discuss their beliefs without fear of judgment.
"I assume every single person has seen something in the sky that didn't make sense," she said. "To me, an intelligent person is going to assume there's more to everything that what we see."
Beall hasn't had any personal experience with extraterrestrials, either having an up-close encounter or seeing an object in the sky, but he knows scientists every day are learning more about the possibilities that humans aren't the only existing life form.
"And I think just putting it into perspective, we're a grain of sand in an ocean," he said. "And we're young compared to the rest of the universe."
Robert Powell, MUFON's director of research, said he's interviewed more than 200 people who've had some kind of experience with other-worldly beings, enough to believe there's something out there even if he hasn't seen it for himself.
Powell said he would love to have his own experience one day.
"In a way, it's really like winning the lottery because there's lots of UFO reports," said Powell. "But there's very few real UFO incidents for witnesses, right? Because people misinterpret what they see."

We’ve rounded up five bizarre things that have been spotted on Mars during past missions, including the mysterious “Crowned Face” above. Continue reading to see more.
5. Rock Structure
This particular scene is imaged from the Spirit rover Panoramic camera on Sol 726 and the rover location is elevated just enough in the terrain to see some background behind the object and a little more of the terrain it appears to sit in. I include this scene here to provide general site context wider area terrain information and to demonstrate how alone and what a sharp stand out this object is in this terrain.
4. Face on Mars (Cydonia)
The Viking images presented us with a mesa and a reason to suspect artificiality – its seemingly improbable humanoid-face-like appearance. However, as is well known, face-like images sometimes appear in clouds, profiles of mountains, and various other random or visually noisy scenes. This is simply because remarkably regular patterns frequently arise by chance, even when the a priori odds are billions to one against that happening.
3. Monolith
The object in question was first spotted several years ago after being photographed by the HiRISE camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA space probe; every so often, it garners renewed interest on the Internet. But is it unnatural – a beacon erected by aliens for mysterious reasons, and even more mysteriously paralleled in the imaginations of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, creators of “2001”? Or is this rock the work of nature?

NASA posted a photograph (PIA10216, Google it-same photo as the woman figure was found!) taken by the Mars Spirit Rover on their web site that bloggers around the world began scanning over carefully in order to catch anything that NASA may have accidentally let slip through. To everyone’s amazement some anonymous person in Asia did and posted it on the Internet causing widespread excitement over the possibilities of life existing on Mars.

Er zijn beelden opgedoken van een aantal grote UFO’s boven de enorme supervulkaan Yellowstone. Alien-jagers suggereren dat er mogelijk een buitenaardse basis in de vulkaan verscholen ligt.
In de wolken boven de supervulkaan in het Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, die al 70.000 jaar niet meer is uitgebarsten, lijkt een groot cilindervormig object met een doorsnee van meer dan 100 meter te zien te zijn.
Energie
Wetenschappers speculeren dat een uitbarsting van de vulkaan tot zo’n 10.000 sterfgevallen en een nucleaire winter kan leiden. UFO-jagers menen dat buitenaardse levensvormen energie onttrekken aan de vulkaan.
De ‘vloot’ vliegende schotels is gespot op livebeelden van het park. Volgens Jeanette Foresta, die de beelden op YouTube zette, is de video bewijs voor de aanwezigheid van buitenaardse wezens.
Op de hoogte
Foresta maakt wel vaker beelden van Yellowstone National Park, maar heeft nog nooit een filmpje over UFO’s geplaatst. Het beeldmateriaal is geanalyseerd door Scott C. Waring van de website UFO Sightings Daily.
“De Amerikaanse overheid is op de hoogte van het bestaan van een actieve buitenaardse basis of zelfs meerdere bases in het gebied,” claimt Waring, die speculeert dat het gebied om die reden is uitgeroepen tot nationaal park. “Ik leef voor dit soort filmpjes.”
