“Fastwalker” is a term used by NORAD and branches of armed forces to describe unidentified aerial phenomena moving and/or changing directions at high speed far beyond what current aerospace technology is capable of.

Fastwalkers have only been spotted in recent years and mainly captured by amateur drones from around the world.

Is it secret advanced space technology used by the military or should we think of extraterrestrial origin.

Are we alone in the universe? That’s one of the biggest, still unanswered questions facing humankind. Now, the Breakthrough Listen initiative has announced the release of a comprehensive Exotica catalog, listing over 700 objects and phenomena in the known universe of potential interest to scientists searching for technosignatures, that is, evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence beyond just the radio signals focused upon in traditional SETI.

Breakthrough Listen says the targets listed in its Exotica catalog will also be useful for the study of astrophysics in general.

A new paper detailing the creation of the list – officially called The Breakthrough Listen Exotic Target Catalog, or Exotica Catalog – was published as a preprint at arXiv on June 23, 2020.

As explained by Breakthrough Listen:

Breakthrough Listen to date has largely focused on the search for ‘life as we know it’ – including Earth-like planets around sun-like stars such as Kepler 160. But what if extraterrestrial intelligences are not like us, but are found in the frigid reaches of the outer solar system, the extreme gravity of neutron stars, the brilliant cores of active galaxies, or the hearts of the richest galaxy clusters? Now we’re announcing an expanded approach, targeting ‘one of everything’ in the universe.

The new Exotica Catalog includes over 700 distinct objects. It has an example of each type in our Prototype sample, extreme objects with record-breaking properties in our Superlative sample, and lingering mysteries in our Anomaly sample. A small Control sample rounds out the list with sky locations we do not expect to be special as a comparison.

With the Exotica catalog, we aim to answer many questions. Have we been looking in the wrong places? Might a few of the objects we think are natural actually be artificial? Could some natural phenomenon or problem with our instruments fool us into thinking we are looking at a signal from an intelligence? What can we learn by using the unique Breakthrough Listen backend to observe the natural world?

The intention of the catalog is to include “one of everything” in the observable universe. It is the first catalog in recent years to cover the entire vast array of exotic phenomena, from distant galaxies to objects in our own solar system. The idea is that it will serve as a guide for researchers searching for evidence of extraterrestrial life, as well as studying natural astrophysical phenomena. Brian Lacki, a graduate student at Ohio State University and lead author of the new catalog, said in a statement:

Many discoveries in astronomy were not planned. Sometimes a major new discovery was missed when nobody was looking in the right place, because they believed nothing could be found there. This happened with exoplanets, which might have been detected before the 1990s if astronomers looked for solar systems very different than ours. Are we looking in the wrong places for technosignatures? The Exotica Catalog will help us answer that question.

The catalog is not just limited to SETI, though. My hope is that any program with a new capability may use the Exotica catalog as a shakedown cruise around the universe.

While the catalog has over 700 listings, those listings are grouped into four main categories:

• Prototypes: a list containing at least one example of every known kind of celestial object (apart from those too transient to present realistic observation targets). Planets and moons, stars at every point of their life cycle, galaxies big and small, serene star clusters and blazing quasars, and more are all included in the list.

• Superlatives: objects with the most extreme properties. These include examples like the hottest planet, stars with unusually high or low metal content, the most distant quasar and fastest-spinning pulsar, and the densest galaxy.

• Anomalies: enigmatic targets whose behavior is currently not satisfactorily explained. For instance, the famous “Tabby’s Star” with its bizarre dimming behavior; ’Oumuamua, the interstellar object that passed near Earth in 2017; unexplained optical pulses that last mere nanoseconds; and stars with excess infrared radiation that could conceivably be explained as waste heat from alien megastructures.

• Control sample: a list of sources not expected to produce positive results.

There is also a new classification system for anomalies and new plans for observations of some of these objects based on the catalog.

This catalog is an innovative and welcome addition to the overall SETI effort, as it broadens the focus to many other celestial objects and phenomena, while traditional SETI tended to search only for radio signals, and more recently, light or laser signals. Technosignatures are the new big thing in the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. But even the search for those until now has focused primarily on looking for evidence of “life as we know it” around nearby stars. According to Andrew Siemion, leader of the Breakthrough Listen science team:

Technosignature searches to date have largely focused on the search for ‘life as we know it’: nearby stars, in particular those known to host planets with the potential for liquid water on their surfaces. The expanded search capabilities that Breakthrough Listen has made possible allow us to consider a much wider range of possible technology-laden environments.

The Exotica Catalog will include “one of everything” of a wide range of known objects and phenomena in the universe.

Yuri Milner, the founder of Breakthrough Initiatives, also said:

Breakthrough Listen has already greatly expanded the breadth and depth of its search. The publication of this catalog is a new and significant step for the program.

Pete Worden, executive director of Breakthrough Starshot, added:

When it comes to the search for intelligent life, it’s vital to have an open mind. Until we understand more about the forms another civilization and its technology could take, we should investigate all plausible targets. Cataloging them is the first step toward that goal.

No confirmed technosignatures have been found yet, but the new, expanded search is really just beginning. The universe is vast, so it’s logical that finding something conclusive, if it’s out there, might take a long time. The Exotica Catalog will help to narrow down the search to some of the most interesting candidates and locations, and of course, new ones are always been discovered as well. The guiding principle behind it is the concept of “survey breadth,” i.e., the diversity of objects observed during a program. This will help astronomers constrain the project’s focus to the most interesting or promising targets and weed out natural phenomena that could be mistaken for artificial, and vice-versa.

Last February, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) also announced an outline for new approaches to the question of alien intelligence, and how best to look for it. This was a big step away from the old SETI paradigm, and could now be referred to as SETI 2.0.

We don’t know what surprises the new catalog will yield, but it is an exciting venture that just may help scientists determine whether humanity has any intelligent companions out among the stars and galaxies.

Hundreds of mysterious golden-coloured orbs have been found buried in a hidden chamber deep beneath the Temple of Feathered Serpent in Mexico.

The discovery was made by archaeologists from the Mexico National Institute of Anthropology and History, who admit they have no idea what the spheres are for.

A tiny robot called Tláloc II-TC, which has been scanning tunnels deep beneath the famous temple, found the orbs using infrared scanners.

According to archaeologists from the Mexico National Institute of Anthropology and History, the spheres would have appeared to be made of gold because they are covered in jarosite - a bi-product of the oxidisation of pyrite, also known as Fool's Gold

Infrared scanners found the location of the chamber and the orbs. Archaeologists have no idea what the spheres would have been used for, although believe they may have been involved with religious rituals

THE TLALOC II-TC ROBOT

The Tláloc II-TC is named after the Aztec god of rain.

It is three-feet-long and can squeeze through tight spaces and explore small, hidden areas.

It is fitted with video cameras and a mechanical arm used to clear obstacles out of its way.

It is part of a robotic system called Tlaloque, which includes a large rover that carries the two smaller robots.

Once the Tlaloque arrives at a chamber, the robots break off and scan the area using infrared scanners.

A separate flying drone captures video footage. 

They were hiding in a previously unexplored ancient chamber at the end of a stretch of 2,000-year-old unexplored tunnel on the Teotihuacan site, near the Pyramid of the Sun.

Jorge Zavala, an archaeologist on the dig said: 'They look like yellow spheres, but we do not know their meaning.

It’s an unprecedented discovery.'

The spheres are made of clay and range from 1.5 to 5 inches in circumference.

They get their yellow colour from a material called jarosite.

Lead archaeologist Sergio Gomez explained that the spheres appear to be made of metal because jarosite is formed by the oxidation of pyrite, which is a metallic ore also known as Fool's Gold. 

The walls in the chamber were also found to be dusted in pyrite, which gave it an appearance of a gold room.

The archaeologists therefore think that the orbs would have been used by 'high-ranking people, priests, or even rulers' to perform rituals within the tunnels.

Although, the team admit what part they played in these rituals, and what these rituals meant remain a mystery. 

The team from the Mexican Institute have been using the robot for months to explore the tunnels under the celebrated temple, also known as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.

The social structure of Teotihuacan remains a mystery after nearly 100 years of archaeological exploration at the site

The temple lies about 37 miles north of Mexico City and the site houses the remains of the pre-Hispanic city of Teotihuacan in the Basin of Mexico.

It is best known for the towering Pyramids of the Moon and the Sun.

Earlier this year, the team and the remote-controlled robot found three unexplored passages.

It was only expected to find one.

The discovery of the hidden passages and golden orbs could be highly important.

In 2010 experts said a tomb discovery would be significant because the social structure of Teotihuacan remains a mystery after nearly 100 years of archaeological exploration at the site.

When the civilisation was abandoned, almost 50,000 high-value objects including jade, stone, shell and pottery, such as ceramic beakers, were thrown into the tunnel because it was closed up.

No depiction of a ruler, or the tomb of a monarch, has ever been found, setting the metropolis apart from other pre-Hispanic cultures that deified their rulers.

Vertical excavations begun in 2009 to reach the mouth of the tunnel suggest this was a ruler's tomb, claims Gomez.

'I think the tunnel was the central element, the main element around which the rest of the ceremonial center was built,' Gomez said. 'This was the most sacred place.'

'There is a high possibility that in this place, in the central chamber, we can find the remains of those who ruled Teotihuacan,' he added.

Ancient sites are more often than not peppered with the mysteries of the past. They hold enigmas and unsolved clues that almost seem to taunt us through the mists of time, and as much as we study ancient sites, we usually seem to dig up more questions than answers. One fairly recent case of this happened in the country of Mexico, where a team of archeologists exploring a mysterious ancient city sent a robot down into its bowels and turned up more than they bargained for.

Sitting out at a site located fewer than 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the bustling urban center of Mexico City, lies one of the true wonders of the ancient world, a massive city built more than a thousand years before the arrival of the Aztecs. Called Teotihuacan, meaning “the place where men become gods,” it was once the center of a thriving megapolis of an estimated 100,000 residents, which at a time when the total population of the Earth was only 200 million made it perhaps one of the largest cities in the world at the time, seeing its heyday from between 100 B.C. and 650 A.D. The mysterious people of this city built by hand wide swaths of road, walls, elaborate buildings, and ornate temples such as the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon, which were grand pyramids not unlike those of faraway Egypt, to the point that when the Aztecs found it abandoned, they were awestruck by its splendor.

Teotihuacan is in and of itself an enigma. Although it was once perhaps the most populous and sprawling city the world had ever seen, almost nothing is known of its people and culture, and it was all mysteriously abandoned in some mass exodus event in around 700 A.D. for reasons unknown. Just about the only thing we know is that they worshipped around eight different gods, and made frequent animal and human sacrifices, but that is about it. In modern times this ancient city has been the focus of countless excavations, many of which have only deepened the mystery behind these long lost people, and although much of the surface of this place has been mapped, excavations have only scratched the surface of what lies beyond that, and there are also believed to be extensive labyrinthine systems of manmade tunnels and chambers underground that are completely uncharted territory. It is here at one of these places of perpetual darkness not looked upon with human eyes for thousands of years that yet another mystery would be found.

Teotihuacan

In 2013, something very odd was found down beneath a pyramid called the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, also known as Temple of Quetzalcoatl, when archaeologists from the Mexico National Institute of Anthropology and History were exploring its dank spider web of subterranean tunnels. To do this, they employed a robot called Tláloc II-TC. Measuring a mere 3 feet long, the remote-controlled robot was designed to squeeze into tight spaces too small for humans to enter, and it carries cameras, infrared scanners, 3-D mapping equipment, and a mechanical arm to push away debris in its path. Part of a robotic system called Tlaloque, it is carried to the target site by a larger rover, which dispenses it and another similar small robot like itself, and the system has been instrumental in uncovering numerous previously unknown tunnels, rooms, and side chambers. It was in one of these rooms that it would make a spectacular discovery. Archaeologist Sergio Gómez Chávez would say:

The robot was able to enter in the part of the tunnel which has not yet been excavated yet and found three chambers… We believe that high-ranking people, priests or even rulers, went down to the tunnel to perform rituals.

This was already exciting enough as it was, but what made it truly remarkable is what was found inside. There scattered all over the ground out in the open were hundreds of yellow clay spheres or orbs, measuring from 1.5 to 5 inches in circumference and covered with pyrite, also commonly called “fool’s gold,” which had over the centuries oxidized to become an amber mineral called jarosite. Because of this, back in pre-Hispanic times when they were first placed here the spheres would have appeared to be metallic, made of gold, and would have shone and glittered brilliantly. The walls too are covered in a coating of magnetite, pyrite and hematite, which would have made it seem as if the whole, scintillating chamber was crafted of solid gold. Truly it would have been a magnificent, breathtaking sight to see back in the time when people still ventured here long ago, but the archeologists have no idea at all as to what they mean or what their function was. Indeed, the whole origin and purpose of the chamber is a complete mystery, and it has been called by the team “an unprecedented discovery.”

One of the main ideas was that this was likely a place of great importance, perhaps the center of the whole complex and used as a place for rulers and high priests, either as a place for rituals, a burial chamber, or both, although it is an utter mystery as to what kinds of rituals might have been carried out here. The spheres might have been objects for ritual purposes, talismans, or as offerings to their gods. It would have been an incredibly important place, further supported by evidence that seems to show that the main tunnel that leads to the secret chambers was at one point totally sealed off, as if to protect something of great value, and the main tunnel itself is lined with jade, stone, shell and pottery objects that would have been luxury items at the time. It is thought that if the cave is explored further, there may be more discoveries in the darkness, perhaps even the remains of a ruler, never found before in the city of Teotihuacan. At the moment there are no answers, and they remain just another of the many questions the ancients have left in their wake for us to ponder.

In 2006, Anomalist Books published my book, On the Trail of the Saucer Spies. It’s basically a full-length, historical examination of how and why government, military and intelligence agencies have secretly spied on certain elements of the UFO research community – and all across the world, no less – since that legendary year in which the Flying Saucer was born: 1947. The book revealed that numerous, central players within the UFO arena had been watched closely by the world of officialdom, including infamous UFO “Contactees” George Adamski, George Hunt Williamson and George van Tassel (all of who were the subject of FBI files); Gray Barker and Albert Bender – two of the earliest chroniclers of the Men in Black puzzle; Bill Moore, Stan Friedman and several other of the premier Roswell investigators; crashed UFO data-collector, Leonard Stringfield; and various early UFO research groups, including the National Investigations Committee for Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), and the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO), to name just a few.

Without a doubt, the most controversial data contained within the book was provided to me by a retired employee of the British Police Force’s Special Branch who, within the pages of the book, I termed “The Sandman.” He asserted to me that while working for Special Branch in the mid-1970s, he was engaged in a secret operation to monitor certain members of the British UFO research community. The Sandman further maintained that after his retirement from Special Branch, and during the 1990s – the time period in which he ran a private security company that occasionally undertook clandestine work for British Intelligence – he was recruited into a Special Branch-led operation to carefully monitor some of the newer faces on the ufological scene. Those same, newer faces included (a) UFO researcher, Matthew Williams; (b) computer-hacker, Matthew Bevan; and (c) Robin Cole, a Cheltenham, U.K.-based researcher who was busy at the time digging deeply into the links between UFOs and the Government Communications Headquarters, GCHQ, at Cheltenham.

Most interesting of all was the reaction of the UFO research community in late 2005 and early 2006, when the rumor-mill began to quietly report on both the above data and the then-forthcoming publication of On the Trail of the Saucer Spies. As I know personally from emails sent to me at the time, there was a high degree of anticipation that, finally, the UFO research community was going to see prime evidence that we were being watched because we were getting, as one commentator concisely put it, “too near the alien facts.” Similarly, a couple of contacts in the research field praised the book – before they saw it – and predicted it would open the floodgates to “a final proof the government knows we know they have aliens and crashed ships in their hangars.” Well, when the book was published several of those enthusiastic commentators vanished into the shadows in a flash; and the reaction was decidedly mixed, to say the very least. And I’ll tell you why. Time and time again, I found that the reasons why British, American and Australian Intelligence agencies (to name but three nations involved) were secretly spying on the UFO community actually had nothing whatsoever to do with UFOs, aliens, dead extraterrestrials held in cryogenic storage, or tales of Area 51 and Hangar 18.

Rather, the motivation was prompted by the fact that those same intelligence communities were acutely worried some UFO researchers were also tied with politics, the criminal underworld, and hostile, overseas intelligence agencies – such as those of the former Soviet Union and North Korea. They also feared that UFO research was acting as a form of ingenious camouflage to mask the fact that we were, in reality, trying to uncover defense and intelligence secrets of a distinctly down-to-earth nature for those same aforementioned hostile overseas intelligence agencies. Needless to say, this was not at all what the UFO research community anticipated; nor was it what they wanted to hear from me. Instead, they wanted tales of researchers getting too close to the extra-terrestrial truth. They desired stories of intimidation created out of a direct result of us uncovering cosmic conspiracies – and here I was giving them stories of espionage-based chicanery, of which the UFO angle was always secondary, and sometimes barely that, even.

Predictably, out came the old, tried-and-tested saucer-based chestnuts: I had been financially bribed by “them” to write the book and diffuse the controversy surrounding so-called “real saucer spying.” “They” had threatened me into writing the book. The utterly tiresome, and wholly anticipated, tirade went on and on. Certainly, one of the biggest criticisms leveled at me in many quarters was the fact that I had relied on a source – the Sandman – that had (a) insisted on anonymity; and (b) maintained that Special Branch was deeply engaged in spying on ufologists for strictly political and espionage-based reasons. Well, at the time that On the Trail of the Saucer Spies was published, there was no evidence – whistle-blower testimony aside, that is – that Special Branch were watching the UFO research community because of concerns of a political and security-based nature. It did eventually surface, however. And for that evidence we have to turn our attention to the most recent book from British ufologists Dave Clarke and Andy Roberts: Flying Saucerers. Clarke and Roberts have secured a body of intriguing official UFO-related documentation from Special Branch, via the terms of the Government’s Freedom of Information Act.

As their book amply demonstrates, one organization that Special Branch took more than a passing interest in was the Aetherius Society, founded by George King. The roundabout way in which King’s organization came to the attention of Special Branch is a convoluted story in itself – and I urge you to get hold of a copy of Flying Saucerers if you are in any way interested in how and why the world of UFO research can cross paths with that of officialdom. Consider the following from Clarke and Roberts that concerns the activities of the Aetherius Society in 1958: “…the Aetherius Society was by now very firmly on the establishment’s radar and in May 1958 they once again came to the attention of Special Branch.”

The pair continue that Special Branch’s report, copies of which are in the possession of the authors and me too, stated that the Aetherius Society was “…active in its campaign against nuclear weapon tests, and in this respect its policy is closely allied with that of the Communist Party” – even though, as the authors note, “no evidence of open Communist association with the Society” was ever found. Clarke and Roberts also learned from now-declassified Special Branch documentation that in both August 1958 and August 1959, Special Branch operatives secretly attended Aetherius Society demonstrations in London. With respect to the 1958 demonstration, Special Branch recorded that: “…it can thus be seen that the Aetherius society is molding its preposterous claims to conform with the popular concepts of religion…There is a possibility that all this high-sounding talk of ‘Karma’ and ‘Cosmic Parliaments’ is simply a system of financial gain for certain individuals and George King in particular.”

As all of this demonstrates, Special Branch was certainly taking notice of King and Co., but not for reasons that had any direct bearing upon UFOs and/or official, secret knowledge of UFOs. Rather, it was for other, more down to earth reasons and theories, such as the issue of nuclear weaponry and politics – which is precisely what the Sandman had told me Special Branch was doing, years before the King documents surfaced officially to Clarke and Roberts from Special Branch. On the other side of the Atlantic, the picture is very similar. Thanks to the provisions of the U.S. Government’s Freedom of Information Act, files have surfaced on another individual implicated in the UFO puzzle – and again as a result of specific concerns about the man’s politics. That man was Oliver Kenneth Goff, described in now-declassified FBI files of 6 May 1955 as ‘a self-styled freelance Evangelist who for the past number of years has been speaking around the U.S. regarding the threat of communism to the U.S’. Interestingly, one of Goff’s regular lectures was titled: “Traitors in the Pulpit, or: What’s Behind the Flying Saucers – Are they from Russia, Another Planet, or God?” Other lectures that Goff routinely delivered to interested parties included: “Treason in our State Department;” “Should we use the Atom Bomb?” “Red Secret Plot for Seizure of Denver;” and “Do the Reds Plan to Come by Alaska?”

As the FBI additionally noted: “Also, some of the titles of Goff’s books, which he publishes voluminously are: ‘Will Russia Invade America?, One World, A Red World, and Confessions of Stalin’s Agent.’ The FBI further added that “Goff is a self-admitted former member of the Communist Party’, and that he ‘was found guilty by jury trial on February 25, 1948, in United States District Court, District of Columbia, and was fined $100 as a result of the subject’s placing anti-communist signs before the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C.” FBI files on Goff also record that: ‘The Rocky Mountain News on October 25, 1951, contained an article stating that three Englewood persons were ordered to appear in Denver Municipal Court as an aftermath of the ripping of the Soviet flag yesterday at Civic Center. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Goff were two of these three individuals.”

Goff was certainly an interesting character, and someone who had made comments in the 1950s about communist based plans to covertly introduce fluoride into the US water-supply, to create a “spirit of lethargy in the nation.” Goff also claimed that – in the 1950s – he compiled a document titled Brain-Washing: A Synthesis of the Russian Textbook of Psycho-politics. Goff died in 1972 while still only in his early sixties. And while we now have access to at least some of the official world’s surveillance files on Goff, the full story of his links with communism and flying saucers remains tantalizingly incomplete.

Another interesting piece of data that surfaced in the wake of the publication of On the Trail of the Saucer Spies came from none other than well-known UFO researcher, Bruce Maccabee. In a review of my book for the Journal of Scientific Exploration, Maccabee wrote of his own run-ins with the official world: “After I spoke at a UFO conference near Washington, D.C. in February 1993, I was contacted by an assistant military attaché who was stationed at the Russian Embassy. He wanted to know how to obtain US government files on UFOs.” Maccabee continued that: “…you can imagine my surprise and amusement when, about six months later, while I was at work I got a call from the ‘dreaded’ FBI.” Notably, Maccabee added: “…it became obvious to me that the agent didn’t know much about the UFO phenomenon and was amused to learn about the FBI files on the subject. But he was especially interested in my interactions with the military attaché.” Almost certainly, given the fact that Maccabee has undertaken sensitive work of a non-UFO nature at an official level, this was a typical attempt to recruit Maccabee – using the UFO issue as a starting point, and one that would inevitably have led into other defense related avenues. Maccabee chose not to take the bait. Let us now turn our attention to the situation in Australia.

A file that originated with the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) has been declassified and details the strange saga of how, and why, Australian spies kept watch on elements of the nation’s UFO research community for years. The lengthy dossier is full of data that ranges from the strange and the esoteric, to the hilarious and the sinister. It contains a wealth of material on (a) Australian Flying Saucer groups; (b) concerns about communist-related issues and affiliations pertaining to members of some of those same groups; (c) fears of military personnel and non-military civilians with secret clearances becoming involved with such groups; (d) possible leaks of security data of a distinctly non-UFO nature; and (e) even issues pertaining to vegetarianism and nudism! In other words, yet again, we see a situation where the official world of Intelligence keeps close tabs on the UFO community – but yet again for reasons that are lacking in a direct UFO connection.

Everyone knows that, despite the tantalizing prospect of being able to travel through time and space, it’s never a good thing to get too close to a black hole. Astronomers last year detected a strange object orbiting a black hole which they soon determined was actually being consumed by it. They were afraid it would be swallowed before it could be identified, but they’ve been able to collect enough data to determine that it’s probably a missing link in the hierarchy of black holes.

“We’ve been waiting decades to solve this mystery. We don’t know if this object is the heaviest known neutron star, or the lightest known black hole, but either way it breaks a record.”

In a press release by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration announcing the publication of the research on the discover in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, Vicky Kalogera, a professor at Northwestern University, explains the discovery of something that right in between the heaviest of neutron stars (a dead star that didn’t turn into a black hole) and the lightest black hole – a gap that has defied definition until the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) picked up gravitational waves from the cosmic event known as GW190814. The waves allowed astronomers to determine that the black hole has the mass of 23 suns while the mystery object is about 2.6 solar masses. (Images and visuals can be seen here.)

GW190814

On 23 June 2020, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration announced the discovery of a gravitational wave binary, GW190814. While one component of this binary is a 23 solar-mass black hole, the other (2.6 solar mass) component could be either a low-mass black hole or a heavy neutron star. This signal was seen in the twin LIGO and Virgo detectors. No electromagnetic counterpart was found.

GW190814: heaviest neutron star or lightest black hole? In August 2019, the LIGO-Virgo gravitational-wave network witnessed the merger of a black hole with 23 times the mass of our sun and a binary companion 2.6 times the mass of the sun. Scientists do not know if the companion was a neutron star or a black hole, but either way it set a record as being either the heaviest known neutron star or the lightest known black hole.

“It’s a challenge for current theoretical models to form merging pairs of compact objects with such a large mass ratio in which the low-mass partner resides in the mass gap. This discovery implies these events occur much more often than we predicted, making this a really intriguing low-mass object.”

This “really intriguing low-mass object” would fit nicely in the slot known to astronomers as the “mass gap” – the grey area between black holes and neutron stars. Most previous black hole mergers detected are between two of fairly equal sizes, making them more of a merger or collision. On the other hand, this one is the first seen between such an odd-sized pair – the ratio is 9-to-1 – resulting in a display of astronomer humor by Kalogera.

“I think of Pac-Man eating a little dot. When the masses are highly asymmetric, the smaller neutron star can be eaten in one bite.”

The end result is a black hole where the GW190814 event took place, about 800 million light-years away from Earth. It’s unlikely that astronomers will ever completely identify the consumed object, but the discovery of such an odd Laurel-and-Hardy pair means that more are possible and could yield the answer.

Whether they’re heavy neutron stars or light black holes (isn’t that an oxymoron?), by the time they’re discovered it will be too late to tell the smaller one about Pac-Man.

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist and professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. Oppenheimer was the wartime head of the Los Alamos Laboratory and is among those who are credited with being the “father of the atomic bomb” for their role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons.

The first atomic bomb was successfully detonated on July 16, 1945, in the Trinity test in New Mexico. Oppenheimer later remarked that it brought to mind words from the Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” In August 1945, the weapons were used in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Unsolved Mystery of the Rh-Negative Blood Genetic Origins (Videos)

The Rh-Negative blood factor has remained a mystery since almost the beginning of time. Nearly 85% of all human beings have RH positive blood. This merely indicates that their red blood cells contain a substance called the Rhesus (rhesus) blood factor. Simply put, their positive blood contains a protein that can be linked to the Rhesus monkey.

It is acknowledged that blood factors are transmitted with more exactitude than any other human or animal characteristic. It is not generally known from where the negative RH factor derived, although tantalizing evidence exists that it arrises from genetic experimentation a little over 5,000 years ago.

The highest concentration of RH negative blood occurs in the Basque people of Northern Spain and Southern France, and in the Eastern/Oriental Jews. Only 15% of the entire world´s population is known to have the RH negative blood factor. While it is known that RH negative blood – (type ‘O’) is the purest blood known to mankind, it is not known from where the negative factor originates, as it is generally theorized by evolutionists that there is an unbroken bloodline from early human prototypes (pre-humans) to present-day human beings.

As previously mentioned, ‘Rh-negative’ blood indicates no protein connections exist to the Rhesus monkey, whereas ‘RH positive’ blood does carry protein linked to the Rhesus monkey – hence the ‘RH’ designation, ie. rhesus. All other earthly primates have this RH factor. Thus if all humans evolved from that line, all would have the RH factor. Obviously, that is not the case. Therefore, there must have been some manner of intervention giving rise to Rh-negative blood groups.

Blood type ‘O’ is the most common of the blood groups. When we separate the ‘O’ types into ‘negative’ and ‘positive’ we find that ‘O’ negative (the universal donor blood) constitutes less than 7% of the world´s population. Science at this very time is attempting to create a synthetic RH negative ‘O’ blood but without success. For while the protein in positive blood can be cloned, that of negative blood cannot – which is quite interesting, and maybe indicative of an alien origin, or more probable, from early genetic experimentation during previous advanced human civilization(s).

If the RH negative factor does not derive from any known earthly link (seemingly outside of the theorized evolutionary process) – from where did it originate? Geneticists generally claim the RH-negative factor is a mutation of unknown origin which apparently happened only a few thousand years ago. These ´negative´ blooded people spread heavily into the area of what is now Spain, England, Ireland, France, and later into America, Canada, and Australia. Basque peoples contain the largest concentration of known ‘O’ negative blooded people today because, they, for the most part, have confined themselves to one area, whereas the Celtic people have branched out among all of the new worlds. 

WHAT DOES THE ABSENCE OF RHESUS MONKEY FACTOR MEAN?

No solid scientific explanation exists as to how or why Rh- blood came about. It is presumed to be the result of a random mutation. Have you ever felt you were weird or different? It may be due to your DNA … 85% of humans have the monkey gene (RH+) and 15% do not (RH-) and maybe have an alien gene instead. RH- people are characterized by higher IQs, sensitive vision, lower body temperatures, sensitivity to heat and sunlight, psychic power, ability to stopwatches and electrical appliances, and having extra vertebrae. This film explores the possibility that we were bred as a slave race for labor, since 97% of our genetic code is disabled, with only 3% left for us to survive.

RH NEGATIVE BLOOD

Interestingly, popular sciences endeavor to attribute Rh-neg blood groups to “mutations.” A solid alternative case may be extended to the conclusion that Rh-neg is NOT a mutation, but possibly the original human blood group. This, however, does not reflect tenured thought, and thus has never been adequately researched.

That there was a group of “pure” humans, not directly related to the evolutionary processes on Earth, is a distinct possibility. This reasoning would suggest that the original humans on our planet were not directly related to the apes, but at some point were “MADE” or “genetically engineered” to give such an impression.

Perhaps it was never intended that the Rh-positives become the dominant species. That through some as a yet undetermined epoch, the genetically impure group gradually became the controlling species, except for several remote enclaves, initiated a wide-ranging genocidal pogrom, effectively wiping out those who gave birth to them.

All of which begs the questions: What reasons were the sub-species created, what was the process of conquest, what was the duration, and does it continue?

BLOOD TYPES CONSPIRACY & RH FACTOR 

Items from the Science Community 

Here are a few tidbits about this blood thing. In ALL blood groups there exists a common microbe that in essence is THE LIFE FORCE ITSELF. During experiments that our team conducted we heated the blood to 700 degrees F and also put it in Liquid Nitrogen. This microbe which is visible only with a highly modified dark field microscope that was custom built for us was STILL ALIVE. We have also tested this on ´mummy dust´. This microbe is STILL alive after 5000 years plus when the mummy dust is placed in a ph perfect solution the same as the “live blood”, it returns back to ´life´.

The Draco (Reptilian) with the “O” RH-blood has unique properties because of the polarity of the blood cells. Blood is electrical/magnetic/chemical-based. The relationship of all three must be kept at a specific PH balance of 7.0 to 7.2. The problem with the “O” RH-systems is this, the stomach has TOO MUCH acid in it for proper digestion so they had to resort to taking the trace mineral in THRU THE SKIN aka ´sitting in a bathtub full of minerals´.

Then after generations of this type of eating the digestive systems ceased to function properly. This is why Type “O” blood groups have so much trouble with ´indigestion´. It’s in your genes because of this Draco influence. I am currently putting together a geographical reference to the placement of just how many people carry this genetic code in their blood. 

DO NOT EVER TAKE A BLOOD TRANSFUSION.

The main reason for this has to do with cellular/genetic/galactic memory of blood. This is coded into the entire structure of the blood. All the emotions that the donor has felt during his entire lifetime are part of the blood. This cannot be filtered out.

For example, if you get the heart of a man who died in a car accident, all the cells of that organ have the memory of the accident and every emotion that was felt while dying. These emotions confuse your own coding and then mass internal confusion happens at the cellular level and the order turns into chaos. No shrink at $100 per hour is gonna fix that, ever.

Many “O” Rh-negative people on the planet are also holding karma from the Draco Empire. Some of you have chosen to come to earth to help balance that karma. Some who were “O” Rh-negative have switched to “A” RH positive which is the TOTAL OPPOSITE to “O” RH-neg.

Our worldwide team, over a 10-year time period, has gathered hundreds of thousands of blood samples. We are only now beginning to understand what is happening to humans, as indicated by blood-types, as Earth nears Nexus.

Those having the hardest time being the “O” Rh- blood groups with alien (to Earth) heritage. I cannot reveal at this time just how this is done but I can say this, we are at a crossroads as far as our ability to affect our OUTER world by changing the INNER world of the blood. Every ´disease´ is nothing more than a reflection of the INNER terrain of the blood. As the blood is intimately integrated with the life force, this explains the feeling that we have when working with people that have the same blood type.

To answer the questions that I am sure will come up, The book Eat Right For Your Blood Type is correct only in the foods, but he does not take into consideration the GALACTIC history of the blood in relation to the person. That is what I have been working on. As far as his history as to how the different blood groups came about is pure hogwash. The different blood groups are from different parts of the Galaxy. More of this is going to be revealed as more understanding of REAL RNA/DNA Coding is researched.

When you measure the heart harmonics of people with “O” RH-neg blood, they are usually lower if they are smokers and heavy red meat-eaters. The ones who eat fish and vegetables are in the normal range. This is a very new science and there are but a handful of people who are involved in this research.

Here is something for all of you to think about: 

There is a race of people in a remote region of China that are only 3 – 4 feet tall and speak a language spoken only within that remote area. When they try to move from this region to lower geological elevations, THEY DIE. Their skin color is ashy white. Their eyes are very small almost like slits. 

THE pH REGULATORY SYSTEM OF THE BODY

The pH balance of the human bloodstream is recognized by all medical physiology texts as one of the most important biochemical balances in all of human body chemistry.

pH is the acronym for “Potential Hydrogen”. In definition, it is the degree of concentration of hydrogen ions in a substance or solution. It is measured on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 14. Higher numbers mean a substance is more alkaline in nature and there is a greater potential for absorbing more hydrogen ions. Lower numbers indicate more acidity with less potential for absorbing hydrogen ions.

Our body pH is very important because pH controls the speed of our body´s biochemical reactions. It does this by controlling the speed of enzyme activity as well as the speed that electricity moves through our body.

The higher (more alkaline) the pH of a substance or solution, the more electrical resistance that substance or solution holds. Therefore, electricity travels slower with higher pH. All biochemical reactions and electrical (life) energy is under pH control.

If we say something has an acid pH, we are saying it is hot and fast. As an example, look at the battery of your car. It´s an acid battery. On cold days you want it to be hot and ready, and you want your car to start fast.

Alkaline pH on the other hand, biochemically speaking, is slow and cool. Compare it to an alkaline battery in a flashlight. You want that battery to be cool, and to burn out slowly.

Here is an example of how pH can control. Look around you at society in general. 

Do you see people getting exhausted, burned out, and quick to anger? Do you see a rise in violence? In part, it could be due to the fact that people today lean to an acid pH. As a society, we are running hot and fast. How did we get there? We guzzle coffee for breakfast.

There are about 5000 known blood factors, and all of these must contribute to the complete picture. But the Rh-negative blood is the place to start our search.

As you can see the vast majority of RH- people come from the Basque people of France and Spain, and then Europe has the second-highest percentage.  We can surmise that the RH- blood type originates out of Europe and has spread over to other countries that contain European ancestry heritage.  The RH- recessive alleles (+/-) make up approximately 60% of the Basque people and 40% of the Europeans, so that means that a higher percentage of RH+ people in Europe are carrying the genetics of the RH- factor in their DNA. 

“No one has tried to explain where the Rh negative people came from. Most, familiar with blood factors, admit that these people must at least be a mutation if not descendants of a different ancestor. If we are a mutation, what caused the mutation? Why does it continue with the exact characteristics? Why does it so violently reject the Rh factor, if it was in their own ancestry? Who was this ancestor? Difficulties in determining ethnology are largely overcome by the use of blood group data, for they are a single gene characteristic and not affected by the environment. 

The Basque people of Spain and France have the highest percentage of Rh-negative blood. About 30% have (rr) Rh negative and about 60% carry one (r) negative gene. The average among most people is only 15%-Rh negative, while some groups have very little. The Oriental Jews of Israel, also have a high percent Rh negative, although most other Oriental people have only about 1% Rh-negative. The Samaritans and the Black Cochin Jew also have a high percentage of Rh-negative blood, although again the Rh-negative blood is rare among most black people. 

The Basque people are also known for having the oldest language in Europe, and the origins of the Basque language are unknown.  The languages in neighboring countries in Europe show no resemblance to the Basque language, so this has become a real mystery to the linguist.

The Celtic people of Ireland and Great Britain also have high incidences of the RH- factor and it has recently been proven that there is a genetic link between the Basque and the Celts.  This research proves that the Celtic people came from the Basque regions of France and Spain and a group must have migrated over to the islands of Great Britain.

“ROYAL DISEASE”

Global Blood suppliers managed to infect or kill 90% of Hemophiliacs in the world by providing them with tainted blood. If Hemophiliac is the “Royal Disease”, woe to generations of boys, who could not be king. Worldwide, over 120,000 men, women and boys…a true “genetic holocaust”…are now infected with HIV worldwide…due to tainted blood transfusions, At least 25,000 have died. 

In some areas, the Rh-Negative blood factor is referred to as “Blood Royale” or “Royal Blood”. For centuries, European royalty has been inflicted with Hemophilia or “bleeders disease”. Apparently, Queen Victoria was a “carrier” of Hemophilia and gave it to all of her children who then intermarried and infected the bloodlines of every throne in Europe during the 1800s and 1900s. 

As a direct result, Hemophilia became known as the “Royal Disease”. To keep this in perspective, only about 5% of all “royalty” have Rh-Factor negative blood…which means “less than the general population. That would indicate that the vast majority of “rulers” and “monarchs” are NOT Rhesus-factor negative. Is this by chance? or by genetic engineering called “arranged marriages”? 

For all practical purposes, the cultural group with the highest rates of Rh-negative blood is the “Berbers” of Morocco. In an earlier meme, I indicated that the highest concentration of Rh-Factor Negative was from Iraq. It seems that the Berbers may actually have originated thousands of years ago, from the border of Syria and Iraq. 

If European royalty is no disposed to intermarriage with Rh-Negs, it may be because they are avoiding the “Arab” bloodline? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It appears that the Basque Rh-neg factors come from ancient Berber seafarers as early as 8,000 BC! Perhaps, many of the “cave paintings” may be attributed to “strangers” of great artistic ability that migrated into the area.

As we know from the history, Zahra competed in grandeur and magnificence with Baghdad. Al-Zahravi served in the capacity of the court physician to King Al-Hakam-II of Spain. After a long and distinguished medical career, he died in 1013 C.E. 

As an inventor of many surgical instruments, Al-Zahravi is famous for developing instruments for internal examination of the ear, internal inspection of the urethra, and for applying or removing foreign bodies from the throat. He introduced such new procedures as cauterization of wounds, crushing stones inside the bladder, the vivisection, and dissection. 

He applied the cauterization procedure to as many as 50 different operations. In addition, Al-Zahravi discussed the preparation of medicines and the application of such techniques as sublimation and decantation. He prescribed the use of diuretics, sudorifics, purgatives, the absorption of pure wine and hot baths. Al-Zahavi was the first to give a detailed description of hemophilia and was the first to use silk thread for stitching wounds. 

So, you begin to wonder if the good doctor was treating an “Arab” family in Moorish Spain for the disease. Then you begin to wonder just where supposed blue blood as Victoria got her “Arab Royalty Disease”??? Was it a disease of Spanish Royalty? 

In other words, was marriage to Victoria’s daughters a way to kill or weaken future “non-Hapsburg” kings…since most males only contract the disease from their mothers? Still, Hemophilia was in Royalty long before Victoria. 

Victoria’s daughters passed the disease into the Spanish, German, and Russian Royal lines and threatened the thrones of all of Europe’s major powers. It would appear that Victoria is actually a direct descendant of Ferdinand of Castille, who retook the city of Castille in 1236, where the surgeon Abulcasis had counseled King Hakam II about a family who’s sons died easily.

A week of unusual high earthquake activity

The best independent earthquake reporting website in the world

Mexico, Turkey, California: Over the past seven days, from June 22nd to June 28th 2020, the world has seen a couple of big and damaging earthquakes. The Mw7.4 quake in Mexico, which was the largest quake on the American continent since January, caused 10 casualties and damaged more than 10.000 houses. Less significant damage was caused by two M~5.5 quakes in Turkey, two people were injured in a 5.8 quake in Japan.

These events, combined with an elevated frequence of posts that were shared by us on Facebook, lead to several comments wondering why we had so many quakes lately. "A week of unusual high earthquake activity" or "Many earthquakes lately" was said by different people. More comments with the same meaning can be found in earthquake groups in Facebook.

But the question is: Do we really have days of unusual high earthquake activity?

Let's have a look on the earthquake catalog from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Why USGS: Because they usually detect more quakes than other agencies (e.g. Geofon) and they have a lower number of falsely reported events (like EMSC in the past couple of months....).
For the week between June 22 and 28 UTC the USGS recorded:

1 quake about M7
2 quakes about M6
27 quakes about M5 and
158 quakes about M4*

Which might look like a rather active week for many people is actually nothing unusual. If we compare these numbers with the statistics from the previous years (you can see a comprehensive statistic on Wikipedia), we see that these numbers are actually below the long-term average.
Since 2010, following average weekly earthquake numbers were recorded:

0,26 quakes about M7
3 quakes about M6
32 quakes about M5
210 quakes about M4*

(* Improved monitoring over the past decades allowed that more smaller quakes could be recorded in recent years compared to prior years. But still the catalogs are not complete, more improvement is needed.)

Therefore, what seemed to be an unusual active week was actually a quite inactive week, slightly below the long-term average.

However, the long-term average is only useful for statistics. Terms like "normal" or "unusual" should not be used to describe the earthquake number. As global earthquake activity is not following a strict schedule, quakes occur in an irregular pattern: We have weeks (or days, months, years) with more than average quakes and also weeks, etc. with less than average quakes. Normal is only that we have earthquakes, no matter how many of them. A week with 20 strong quakes is as "normal" as a week without strong quake (because the conditions on Earth allow this kind of clustering). As "normal" as the past week.

Just because you haven't seen earthquakes occurring in a specific way yet, it doesn't mean that this is strange. It only means that you haven't noticed this happening before.

Incredible Video Shows UFO in the Skies Over Bristol Channel

A video has circulated showing an unidentified flying object (UFO) over Bristol Channel, and many people believe it could be a flying saucer.

The silver of the UFO, just off the coast of Dunster, seems to blend in with the grey skies. Some conspiracy theorists believe it’s a camouflaged UFO.

The footage shows dog walkers on Dunster beach, Somerset, and when the camera zooms in, the silver, shiny shape UFO can be seen floating behind a cargo ship.

James Wheatley published the video on his YouTube channel and the clip was eventually picked by The Hidden Underbelly 2.0, a popular YouTube channel among UFO enthusiasts.

The witness tried to enhance the silver UFO but had trouble identifying what kind of mysterious object he is looking. He said that that the bizarre object could not be cigar-shaped, but with some distortion, it made him think it could be a saucer.

He further explained that the distortion could be the result of moving or could be from the atmosphere because the UFO must be far out there.

Viewers were amazed by the video, but some explained it could be mirage reflected from other objects.

“Utsurobune”: A UFO Legend from Nineteenth-Century Japan

A mysterious event in Japan at the beginning of the nineteenth century shows surprising similarities with stories of UFOs.

In 1803, a round vessel drifted ashore on the Japanese coast and a beautiful woman emerged, wearing strange clothing and carrying a box. She was unable to communicate with the locals, and her craft was marked with mysterious writing. This story of an utsurobune, or “hollow ship,” in the province of Hitachi (now Ibaraki Prefecture) is found in many records of the Edo period (1603–1868), and Tanaka Kazuo, professor emeritus at Gifu University, has studied the topic for many years. What drew him away from his main research area, applied optics, to investigate this curious episode? And what really took place?

“Like a Flying Saucer”

Tanaka says he began to research the ship after the deadly subway sarin attacks in 1995 by the Aum Shinrikyō cult. “There was a lot of coverage of Aum founder Asahara Shōkō's prophecies and claims to be able to float in the air. Yet the cult’s senior members were part of the scientific elite. I started giving lectures considering paranormal phenomena from a scientific perspective, which meant that I was collecting all kinds of materials for teaching, such as about UFOs in the United States and Japanese folklore. While doing so, I came across the utsurobune legend.” He adds, “Long before the American UFO stories, the craft depicted in Edo-period Japanese documents for some reason looked like a flying saucer. This was fascinating to me.”

UFOs became a modern sensation after the media reported US businessman Kenneth Arnold as having witnessed “flying saucers” on June 24, 1947. A flood of similar stories followed from around the world. Most famously, a UFO was alleged to have crashed to the ground near Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. “In the end, though, no wrecks or alien bodies were recovered,” Tanaka says. “There was only the ambiguous testament of witnesses. It was the same with all the other UFO stories from around the world—they were mysteries without any substantial evidence. The utsurobune legend, however, has a number of documents to examine as leads, so in this sense, for researchers it’s a mystery with substance.” 

A Ninja’s Report

There are similar oral traditions about “hollow ships” across Japan in the Edo period. Tanaka’s research is focused on the various documents that describe the 1803 incident in Hitachi and include illustrations of a beautiful woman and a strange vessel, although they cite different dates. One of the best-known sources is the Toen shōsetsu (Toen Stories), an 1825 collection recording fantastic rumors, which was written by the Toenkai literary circle and edited by Kyokutei Bakin, famous for his lengthy historical romance Nansō Satomi hakkenden (The Eight Dog Chronicles). Others are Nagahashi Matajirō's 1844 work Ume no chiri (Plum Dust), as well as collections like Ōshuku zakki (Ōshuku Notes), Hirokata zuihitsu (Essays by Hirokata), and Hyōryūki-shū (Records of Castaways), which gathers stories of foreign ships washed up in Japan and of Japanese sailors who came ashore overseas.

At first, Tanaka theorized that the incident was an embellished account concerning a shipwrecked Russian whaler, but he could not find any mention of such a disaster in official records. Instead, he discovered new materials, becoming absorbed in further background research. To date, he has found 11 documents relating to the Hitachi utsurobune legend, of which the most interesting are thought to date from 1803, the same year that the craft was said to have come to shore.

One is the Mito bunsho (Mito Document) owned by a collector in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. Tanaka noticed that the woman’s clothing in an illustration in the work was similar to that of a bodhisattva statue at the Shōfukuji temple in Kamisu, also in Ibaraki, which is dedicated to the raising of silkworms. A legend credits the start of sericulture in the area to a Princess Konjiki (or “golden princess”), who is a motif in images at the temple. In one version of the story, Princess Konjiki is washed up to shore after traveling from India on a dugout boat in the shape of a cocoon. She repays the kindness of a local couple who try to nurse her back to health by bestowing on them the secrets of sericulture when she herself becomes a silkworm after her death. Among the various materials, only the illustration in the Mito document appeared greatly similar to Princess Konjiki. Tanaka thinks that when the first rumors of a “hollow ship” coming ashore at a beach called Kashimanada were spreading, the people at Shōfukuji may have decided to incorporate it into promotion of the temple.

Another even more important source is the Banke bunsho (Banke Document) owned by Kawakami Jin’ichi, the heir to the Kōka ninjutsu (ninja arts) tradition and a ninjutsu researcher and martial artist. It is named after the Banke, or Ban family, of Kōka ninja. While some other materials say the vessel came ashore at locations like Harayadori or Haratonohama, there is no evidence that such places exist. This document, however, records the location as Hitachihara Sharihama, which appeared in a map produced by the famous cartographer Inō Tadataka, and is now known as Hasaki Sharihama in Kamisu. Tanaka comments that while the other materials show geographical inconsistencies, this document mentions a real place name. He says that Kawakami suggested a Banke member might have been assembling information while working for the head of the Owari domain (now Aichi Prefecture). “If so, he wouldn’t record any untruths, so we can say the document is very reliable.”

Awaiting New Revelations

The folklorist Yanagita Kunio once said that all of the utsurobune legends were groundless fictions. “But in the case of the Hitachi utsurobune, there’s a clear difference from other stories around the country,” Tanaka says. “For one, it’s specified as having taken place in 1803. And then, it’s strange that there are specific pictures of the craft showing it as resembling a flying saucer. I feel it was probably based on something that really happened. But Japan was largely closed off then, so if there was a wreck of a foreign ship or foreign people had arrived in the country, it would have been a huge event and a government official would have investigated and left a public document. When British sailors entered Ōtsuhama [now Kitaibaraki] in 1824, it became one of the causes of an edict to repel foreign vessels the following year. So it might be that there was witness testimony of something taking place for just a short time at Kashimanada. It’s possible that this became tied in with earlier utsurobune legends.”

Just as descriptions of the woman’s clothing vary depending on the document, so do those of the shape and size of her vessel. For example, Records of Castaways says that it was around 3.3 meters high and 5.4 meters wide (when converted into current measurements) and that it was made of rosewood and iron with glass and crystal windows. “I’m not sure whether Records of Castaways was an official document. There are two volumes altogether, and apart from the utsurobune, they’re all incidents that actually took place. This suggests that the writer at least believed the utsurobune was really washed up to shore,” Tanaka says. 

There are countless mysteries connected with the “hollow ship,” such as the meaning of the script written inside it. Tanaka says that one theory has it that it resembles the pseudo-Roman letters sometimes seen in the border of ukiyo-e prints. “So it might be simply decorative. Although it’s not impossible that we’ll discover evidence that it’s alien script!” Having said this, he laughs. “There are likely to be further discoveries of currently unknown materials related to the utsurobune, and new revelations. This legend is so appealing because it’s possible to come up with so many different theories. Having a story like this in Japan—from 140 years before the American UFO sightings—that stimulates the imagination to this extent reminds me of how deep and fascinating Japanese culture can be.”

Her face is pale, and her eyebrows and hair are red. It is impossible to communicate with her, so it is unclear where she is from. A new study shown by NASA scientists at the Goldschmidt conference this week provides further evidence that Europa’s ocean is habitable and similar to Earth’s oceans.

Europa has many cracks in its otherwise smooth surface. Many believe the cracks are the result of the rising and falling of tides in a global ocean beneath Europa’s icy surface. A new study adds to the evidence that this subsurface ocean may be habitable.

Is there life on Jupiter’s ocean moon Europa? This moon has fascinated space enthusiasts for decades, since scientists determined there’s a global ocean of water beneath the moon’s icy outer crust. Last week (June 24, 2020), NASA scientists announced new research that supports the idea that Europa’s ocean is habitable. They said this underground ocean is likely similar in many ways to the open-air oceans on Earth.

The fascinating results were presented at the Goldschmidt conference (virtual this year due to Covid-19). The associated abstract is available on the conference website. These are preliminary results, and not yet peer-reviewed.

First, the findings support what scientists had predicted about the composition of the ocean, as planetary scientist and lead researcher Mohit Melwani Daswani explained in a statement:

We were able to model the composition and physical properties of the core, silicate layer, and ocean. We find that different minerals lose water and volatiles at different depths and temperatures. We added up these volatiles that are estimated to have been lost from the interior, and found that they are consistent with the current ocean’s predicted mass, meaning that they are probably present in the ocean.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers modeled geochemical reservoirs within the interior of Europa using data from the old Galileo mission. The results are significant since they show that oceans like the one on Europa can be formed by metamorphism, that is, by a change of minerals or a distinct arrangement of minerals (a change in what geologists call texture) in preexisting rocks (protoliths) without the protolith melting into liquid magma.

On Europa, heating and increased pressure caused by early radioactive decay or later subsurface tidal movement, would have caused a breakdown of water-containing minerals. Trapped water would be released, and Europa’s underground ocean would be born.

So what about habitability?

The study also found that Europa’s ocean would have been mildly acidic at first, with high concentrations of carbon dioxide, calcium and sulfate. But over time, it became chloride-rich, resembling oceans on Earth (seawater on Earth contains 1.94% chloride). According to Daswani:

Indeed it was thought that this ocean could still be rather sulfuric, but our simulations, coupled with data from the Hubble Space Telescope, showing chloride on Europa’s surface, suggests that the water most likely became chloride rich. In other words, its composition became more like oceans on Earth. We believe that this ocean could be quite habitable for life.

Europa is one of our best chances of finding life in our own solar system. NASA’s Europa Clipper mission will launch in the next few years, and so our work aims to prepare for the mission, which will investigate Europa’s habitability. Our models lead us to think that the oceans in other moons, such as Europa’s neighbor Ganymede, and Saturn’s moon Titan, may also have formed by similar processes.

We still need to understand several points though, such as how fluids migrate through Europa’s rocky interior.

Although not proven yet, there is growing evidence for water vapor plumes on Europa, similar to those on Saturn’s moon Enceladus (artist’s concept).

Another interesting possibility is that volcanic vents on the seafloor of Europa’s ocean might have contributed to the process of the water’s becoming chloride-rich. That would be exciting, since such vents on Earth provide heat and nutrients to a wide variety of life in our world’s deep oceans.

The Cassini spacecraft has already found evidence for such vents on the seafloor of Saturn’s moon Enceladus, which also has a global ocean beneath its icy crust.

These or other energy sources would be necessary for life to evolve and thrive in an underground ocean: a dark and sunless environment. As Steve Mojzsis, Professor of Geology at the University of Colorado Boulder, noted:

A long-standing question over whether a ‘cloaked ocean’ world like Europa could be habitable boils down to whether it can sustain a flow of electrons which might provide the energy to power life. What remains unclear is whether such icy moons could ever generate enough heat to melt rock; certainly interesting chemistry takes place within these bodies, but what reliable flow of electrons could be used by alien life to power itself in the cold, dark depths?

A key aspect that makes a world ‘habitable’ is an intrinsic ability to maintain these chemical disequilibria. Arguably, icy moons lack this ability, so this needs to be tested on any future mission to Europa.

The results of the new study are tantalizing, but more work needs to be done. How much chloride is really in Europa’s ocean? As mentioned in a June 25, 2020, article on Centauri Dreams, a paper from 2019 stated the following about sodium chloride (NaCl) on Europa:

The presence of NaCl on Europa has important implications for our understanding of the internal chemistry and its geochemical evolution through time. Whereas aqueous differentiation of chondritic material and long-term leaching from a chondritic seafloor can result in a system rich in sulfates, more extensive hydrothermal circulation, as on Earth, may lead to an NaCl-rich ocean. The plume chemistry of Enceladus, which is perhaps the best analog to Europa, suggests an NaCl-dominated ocean and a hydrothermally active seafloor. However, the compositional relationship between Europa’s ocean and its endogenous material is unknown, and the surface may simply represent the end result of a compositional stratification within the ice shell… Regardless of whether the observed NaCl directly relates to the ocean composition, its presence warrants a reevaluation of our understanding of the geochemistry of Europa.

Scientists can learn more about Europa’s ocean by modeling, but obtaining solid evidence will require actually sending a mission back there. Fortunately, NASA’s Europa Clipper mission is set to do just that, scheduled to launch in 2023.

Europa is one of the largest moons in the solar system with a diameter of 1,926 miles (3,100 km), just a little less than Earth’s moon. While the subsurface ocean is relatively warm (exact temperature not known yet), on the almost airless surface of Europa the temperatures are always a bitter minus 256 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 160 degrees Celsius) or lower.

There is also growing evidence for water vapor plumes on Europa, similar to those on Saturn’s moon Enceladus. If they are there, Europa Clipper could fly through them, just as Cassini did at Enceladus, and sample the vapor for analysis. If connected to the ocean, as Enceladus’ are thought to be, that would provide valuable clues as to conditions in the Europan ocean and, maybe, even evidence of life itself.

The latest analysis of Europa’s ocean is tantalizing, but we will know a lot more after Europa Clipper – and ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer (JUICE) mission – take a closer look in the years ahead.

One would be hard-pressed to find a natural phenomena with more myths and symbolism associated with it than the rainbow. A welcome sight after a storm, a simple rainbow is a sign of better – or at least drier – things to come. It’s when the rainbow deviates from the norm that causes people to worry – both mythologically and meteorologically. That’s why an extremely rare red rainbow and a red dome seen recently over Birmingham, England, has people there wondering if 2020 is going to get worse or better … or if Stephen King is working on another movie.

“This is amazing, oh my God, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

That’s the comment of Abigail Daisy Parkes, who recorded the red rainbow on June 13. The video (watch it here) was sent to the YouTube channel Disclose Screen ‘The Grimreefar‘ where comments speculated on it being an effect of Nibiru or radiation caused by a hole in the ozone. While an appearance by Nibiru or Planet X would certainly be a sign of something (besides proving so many people wrong), could this appearance of one of the rarest of rare rainbows be a sign of something else?

Double rainbow

The standard rainbow is an optical illusion nearly as common as the raindrops, fog, sea spray and other conditions that create it. Sunlight from behind the viewer hits the tiny droplets and is reflected and refracted into the standard color spectrum of light. The refracting also gives the light its ‘bow’. Variations include double (also triple and quadruple), fogbow, cloudbow, moonbow (all pretty self-explanatory) and the red or monochromatic. Meteorologists say red rainbows occur at sunrise or sunset and low in the sky. Because the light has to travel so far, only the long red waves make it through. The dome effect is merely a continuation of the reflection and refraction through the entire mist.

While most people see rainbows as a good thing (pot of gold, good luck, God’s promise to never cause another flood like Noah’s, seeing a deceased pet someday, etc.), there are plenty who see them as bad omens. A great one comes from Bulgaria, where some believe if you walk under a rainbow, you will change genders! Nicaraguans and Hondoruans see them as a sign of the devil and stay indoors long after a storm. Some in Japan see its resemblance to a snake as bad luck. The Old Farmer’s Almanac Book of Lore warns pointing at a rainbow brings bad luck (uh-oh). Finally, some cultures see the different colors as separate stairs to heaven — does this make the red dome over Birmingham a red slide that will keep them from getting to heaven?

No gold or wrong end?

“Wow.”

Maybe that slide was what Abigail Daisy Parkes was thinking about when she said this a few times while watching the red dome form over Birmingham. Fortunately, it eventually disappeared. On the other hand, the pot of gold was never there in the first place – the myth is based on a fable about a trick played by a leprechaun on a farmer and his wife in return for his freedom.

The slide at least sounds like more fun. Just don’t point at it.

What is a red rainbow and are they really that rare?  

A red rainbow - otherwise known as a monochrome rainbow - is a meteorological and optical phenomenon and a variation of the multi-coloured rainbow.

The formation process is very similar to the classic rainbow, insofar as it involves light reflecting and refracting off of rain droplets, but a red rainbow occurs when the sun is very low, typically at sunrise or sunset.

The low angle of the sun results in a longer distance for its light to travel through the atmosphere, causing shorter wavelengths of light, such as green, blue and yellow, to be scattered and leaving primarily red. 

Despite red rainbows being less common than its multi-coloured variant, there is contention whether they are all that rare.

Deborah Byrd, a skywatching enthusiast, told earthsky.org that she has only ever seen one red rainbow in her decades of skywatching. 

However, they are usually rare to see because of the conditions they typically appear in, according to the Sky Lights blog, The dusky colour of the sky sometimes means that the red is ever so faint and gets washed out, meaning that people sometimes miss the phenomenal sight.

Close Encounter By Multiple Police Officers In Illinois

JANUARY 5, 2000 ……HIGHLAND ILLINOIS

On Wednesday, January 05, 2000, the National UFO Reporting Center received two telephone messages (at 0316 and 0351 hrs. Pacific Standard Time) from Officer Thomas “Ed” Barton, employed by the Lebanon, IL, Police Department.  The messages apprised our Center that a UFO sighting had occurred in St. Clair County, Illinois, and in surrounding areas, at approximately 0410 hrs. (Central)  earlier that morning. 

Later the same morning, we were able to talk to Officer Barton, who reported to us the following:

At approximately 0410 hrs. (Central) on that morning, he overheard an announcement by the St. Clair (IL) Emergency Dispatch operator that a citizen had entered the Highland, IL, police station, and requested that an officer go outside and view a very peculiar object that was hovering nearby in the sky.  The citizen had witnessed the bizarre looking object on his way to work, and he apparently refused to leave the station until a police officer had viewed the object with him.

Having heard the announcement about the incident over his radio, Officer Barton looked to the southeast from his location in Lebanon, and noticed two extremely bright white lights suspended in the sky, close to the horizon. The two lights were radiating so much light that the spectacle reminded Officer Barton of the Japanese “Rising Sun” symbol, used on the Japanese battle flag.  A very short period of time later, the two large lights appeared to merge into one, and the illumination the object was radiating appeared to increase dramatically.

Officer Barton began driving south and east in attempt to approach the object.  He turned his overhead flashers on, and at times was driving at 75-80 m.p.h. toward the object, which was still generally to the southeast of his position.  After a short period of time, Officer Barton realized that the object appeared to be traveling toward him. 

He stopped his vehicle, extinguished his overhead flashers, and rolled down the window on the passenger side of his vehicle.  The object approached his location, and passed overhead at an estimated altitude of 1,000 to 1,500 feet, and within an estimated 100 feet lateral distance of his position on the ground.  It was headed generally to the west, or northwest, at this time.  The object was distinctly triangular in shape, with three white lights on the apices of the triangle, and it exhibited a “galaxy” of peculiar lights on its aft end, including white, hues of red or pink, and perhaps other colors, as well.

After passing overhead Officer Barton, the object suddenly turned to its left, without either banking or yawing apparently, it suddenly accelerated quite dramatically, and seemed to “streak” to the west, covering approximately 8 miles, the officer estimated, in approximately 3 seconds.

(Note:  Officer Barton, in multiple telephone conversations with our organization, and during at least one radio broadcast, has emphasized how almost unbelievably quickly the object accelerated and moved a considerable distance to the southwest in just a few seconds.  Its velocity was almost unimaginable, he reports.  This is one aspect of the case that strongly suggest to us that the object almost certainly was not of human manufacture.)

He radioed St. Clair County Emergency Dispatch, apprising them that he had the object in sight, and advising them as to the direction it had moved, generally to the southwest.  He recommended that dispatch contact units to the south and west of his position, e.g. Shiloh, Millstadt and Dupo, to have the officers there attempt to spot the object from their vantage points

Apparently at least one officer from Shiloh, IL, witnessed the object next, and two other officers, who have not come forward and who apparently do not wish to be identified, witnessed the object while they were standing in the cemetery of their town, as well.

An officer from the Millstadt Police Department, Officer Craig Stevens, with whom NUFORC also spoke, overheard the broadcast, and moved his cruiser to a dark part of that town to see if he could spot the object in the night sky.  He quickly spotted the object to the west of his location, at approximately 45 degrees above the horizontal plane, and gauged its size as “huge.”  He estimated that it was “one or two stories” tall, and perhaps three stories long.”  It had several very bright lights on it.

St. Clair Dispatch requested that someone, if possible, attempt to get a photograph of the object.  In response to that request, Officer Stevens removed polaroid-type camera stored in the trunk of his cruiser and quickly photographed the object.  Because the outside temperature was low, approximately 18-20 degrees (F), neither the camera, nor the film functioned well, so the resolution of the photograph is not good.

After Officer Stevens had taken the photograph, the object appeared to move further to the west, moving toward Dupo, IL, Cahokia, IL, and St. Louis, MO.  A Dupo police officer may have witnessed the object at that time.

In the final analysis, the police departments and communities involved in the incident include the following:  Highland, Summerfield, Lebanon, Shiloh, Mascoutah, Millstadt, Dupo, and Cahokia, Illinois.  The object was observed by officers from at least the following communities (in chronological sequence):  Lebanon, Shiloh, (Other?), Millstadt, Dupo, and Cahokia (?).

Notes and Addenda:

1. Scott Air Force Base:  At one point during the sighting, we estimate, the object was within 2-3 statute miles of Scott Air Force Base.  However, an official spokesman for that base reportedly made an official statement to the effect that A) their tower was closed for approximately one hour during the time of the sighting; B) their base radar had been turned off for unspecified reasons during the same hour; and 3) none of their personnel was aware of the sighting, and none had seen the object.
2. NUFORC has received several unconfirmed reports that shortly after the incident, several of the police departments involved in the sighting, and several of the actual eyewitnesses to the incident, received visits from two, or more, individuals, who are active employees from the federal government.  They requested that the parties involved in the incident curtail all their statements to the press.  We are unable to confirm these reports at the time this Summary Statement is being prepared.
3. Alleged intercept by military aircraft:  NUFORC has an unconfirmed report from a highly reliable source that jet fighters from a nearby Air National Guard unit may have been “scrambled” to take a look at the object.  The nearest ANG unit we are aware of is the Missouri Air National Guard, which flies F-15’s out of Lambert Field/St. Louis Airport.  We have a second hand report that personnel at the airport witnessed a take-off of F-15’s at approximately 0420 hrs. that morning.  We have a second report from an individual who remembers having been awakened at approximately the time of the sighting by the sound of military jets taking off from Lambert Field.
4. Other witnesses:  NUFORC has received a report from a woman who was driving to work that morning and allegedly witnessed the object.  We are awaiting her written report.  Other witnessed have asserted that they may have seen the object earlier to the north, near Lake Michigan.  We have received no written reports of such sightings.  We also have an unconfirmed report that the object was video taped during the early part of the sighting.  This fact, too, is yet to be confirmed.
5. Media coverage:  The incident has gained wide coverage in the print and electronic media, including the Art Bell radio talk show (“Coast to Coast”); the Jeff Rense talk show (“Sightings”); German public radio; many other radio programs across the country; The St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper; Knight-Ridder publications; the Los Angeles Times; the Chicago Sun-Times; other publications that subscribe to, or carry releases from, the above media outlets.
6. Investigations:  The incident continues to be investigated by members of the Mutual UFO Network (Illinois and Missouri chapter), by the National Institute for Discovery Science (Please see link to their website), Mrs. Barbara Becker of Columbia, MO, and perhaps by other independent individuals and organizations. Are We Being Watched?

All over the world, UFO sightings are taking place regularly. These are very significant events in the history of the planet. For some reason, we humans have some sort of interest in them. We find ourselves curious about the existence of these unidentified flying objects.

It is said that many sightings of flying creatures and other humanoids who do not have wings and cannot fly have been reported all over the world. Whether the sightings are reported by eyewitnesses or by those who have captured images of the objects is not always clear to us. But, it has been clearly stated that some of these sightings can be very valid.

We all have experienced the impact of flying objects and space debris. Some of these have caused serious injury and death to people. We should keep in mind that the earth is covered with dangerous space debris and they can be very dangerous.

There are actually a lot of space junk, which have been left over from space travel. These are remnants of spacecraft, which had broken apart during flight. This, however, is a relatively small amount of space junk. Many times, when a large object like a rocket breaks up, this debris is not larger than a pea; they can be as small as a grain of sand.

Over the years, there have been a lot of reports of UFOs, but it is said that they may be classified according to their different sizes and speeds. The first sightings were reportedly made by professional scientists who were working in government facilities. They have also claimed that there are military scientists who are doing an in-depth study of UFO sightings.

It is interesting to note that there have been a lot of claims made by professional scientists that these are real. These people have been sent to investigate the events that took place in the vicinity of outer space. Of course, there have been people who have tried to argue against the existence of these phenomena and they claim that they are all just hoaxes.

There are some strange and unusual formations that have been recorded. Many of these have been recorded in photographs. Some of these photographs were taken by amateur scientists who have claimed that they have documented the events that took place. Many people say that this is simply part of some very advanced research project that they are conducting.

The best way to combat the appearance of UFO sightings is to get a handle on how many of these objects have been spotted by the American public. It is also to see if we can get to the bottom of the mystery of what these mysterious flying objects really are. In the end, it is a good idea to remember that there is a lot of unexplained phenomena around us, but there is nothing extraordinary about UFOs.

This is a great example of a UFO that has made a disk cloud around it so that it could fly low and close to the public. Look how low this one is. It wouldn't surprise me if they had windows or transparent walls that allow the aliens to look down at the people and activities below. Absolutely amazing catch of a perfect disk over England yesterday. Aliens have been around us for thousands of years, but we are wising up, our technology and our intelligence is increasing and they wont be able to hide from us for long. The public will expose them. We don't need any help from any government. We have the man power, we have the skill, we have the passion to accomplish it.

Alien Bases Found On South Pole Of Moon, Apollo Map, UFO Sighting News.

Now I have some structures I found in the southern pole of earths moon. The map is from an Apollo mission. There are some really complex structures down there. The structure above is over 6.5km long. There are obviously structures, but to the untrained eye, they may be nothing at all. I fear that until AI is created and comes across my discoveries, no real change on earth will ever occur from the work I have done over the last two decades. But the real question is...if AI is created and confirm everything I say and found...will the public turn on AI? Calling it racist, biased, politicalized, or domineering? When humans are faced with the ultimate intelligence...are we intelligent enough to listen? Time will tell.

I was looking over some Mars photos when I came across one that had perfectly even thickness of walls. The walls were all connected and each made its own room. The walls appear to be the ruins of a tiny intelligent species that once lived within them. 

Back about 10 years ago, I discovered the woman figure on Mars and it was merely 6 inches tall or 15 cm. I believe the same human like tiny species built these structures to live within. Notice the even thickness of all the walls. That is impossible in nature, but clearly deliberately created. This is 100% proof that an intelligent species, albeit tiny, once lived and thrived on Mars.

On March 8th, 1994, civilians in western Michigan on the edge of Lake Michigan called 911 en masse about strange lights in the sky, described as mostly cylindrical, moving up and down in altitude, and having a vertical row of lights on them. They appeared to be coordinated, as one caller described them as moving in a circle.

This was backed up by a National Weather Service radar operator in Muskegon, MI, who was contacted by the 911 dispatcher and asked to look into it. In the tapes in this episode, which are in the public domain, you can hear the NWS official remark at the anomalous and possibly coordinated behavior of the objects, which he reported moved together in a triangle.

He states they were not storms or aircraft, and as time passes, he becomes gradually more distressed, as highlighted by the subtitle overlay.

Interestingly, Project Blue Book had several interesting cases in this area of Michigan, including several that civilians described as "metallic," but USAF officials deemed them astronomical in nature or insufficient data for analysis.

Aweird unidentified aerial phenomenon has been seen in the sky over Taverny, France, and the photographer has no idea what it could have been.

A photographer and his friends were chatting outside on June 20, 2020 around 9 p.m. The sky was still very clear when they spotted strange bright elongated shaped anomalies in the sky, as if the sunlight was reflected on the objects.

They counted four objects and they were all moving in the same direction, at approximately equal distance and they made no sound on which the photographer took several photos using the super zoom of his Pentax camera, before the objects were too far away. The sighting ended when they were no longer within sight. Mufon case 109736.

When zoomed in on to the anomalies you can clearly see that these are not mylar balloons, drones or known registered aircraft.

Why is the far side of the moon so weird? Scientists may have solved a lunar mystery

In a new study, scientists explore a new theory that aims to explain why the moon's near and far sides are so different.

In the new study, researchers from the Earth‐Life Science Institute at Tokyo Institute of Technology, the University of Florida, the Carnegie Institution for Science, Towson University, NASA Johnson Space Center and the University of New Mexico investigated the moon's geologic history and found a new explanation for the asymmetry between its far and near sides. 

Through a number of experiments, computer modeling and the use of existing observations of the lunar surface, these researchers found that concentrations of radioactive elements on the moon could help to explain the asymmetry between the near and far sides of the moon. 

This study showed that radioactively unstable elements including Potassium (K), thorium (Th) and uranium (U) create heat through the process of radioactive decay. This heat can melt the rocks where these elements are located. 

This work was published March 30 in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Heat gave Jupiter's icy moon Europa layers. That may be good news for the search for life.

Jupiter's icy moon Europa experienced enough heat to produce a layered interior and subsurface ocean, scientists say. The finding could help researchers learn about the potential for life on other worlds. 

Mohit Melwani Daswani, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, led a team that analyzed data gathered by the Galileo mission. Beginning in the mid-1990s, Galileo studied Jupiter and its moons for about eight years and discovered that a global ocean of liquid water likely exists under the icy surface of Europa. 

Daswani's team found that a layer-creating phenomenon called differentiation may be the reason Europa has its ocean. Daswani announced his findings Wednesday (June 24) during a presentation at the virtual Goldschmidt conference, an annual conference on geochemistry and related fields. The work has yet to be peer reviewed. 

Europa has some key features suspected to be necessary for a habitable world, Daswani told Space.com in an interview. Daswani's findings could have implications for the study of habitability on other worlds, even those beyond the realm of our sun. The team hopes that upcoming missions like NASA's Europa Clipper, due to launch later this decade, will help determine if the icy moon is indeed habitable.

Daswani's team found evidence of a promising sign: Europa's ocean could have originated from the breakdown of water-bearing minerals that were in the interior of Europa. That process may have occurred during differentiation, during which Europa was "separated into distinct layers, sort of like an onion," he said. 

"The interior of Europa is much denser than the outer layers," Daswani said. "That already tells us a really important property of Europa's history and geology: It must have experienced high heat in order for that process of differentiation to occur." That past high heat also increases the odds that Europa currently has enough heat to hide a liquid ocean.

The source of that heat could be radioactive decay in the moon's interior, or a phenomenon called tidal dissipation caused by interactions with Jupiter and large nearby moons, or some of both, Daswani said. With liquid oceans, Europa has one important characteristic to supporting life. 

This process of differentiation happened on the key habitable world, Earth, as well as on Mars. "Europa was large enough to experience that as well," Daswani said.

There isn't a direct connection between differentiation and habitability, but Daswani said that this process of breaking down minerals via heat to produce oceans is perhaps not unique to Europa. "Large ocean worlds that experience this heat in the interior may have a mechanism to build oceans," Daswani said. By looking at the processes that led minerals to release water on Europa, scientists could figure out if an exoplanet might host a liquid ocean, because this may be a common way for oceans to form on worlds in our solar system and beyond.

There is a solar system world with an ocean that doesn't seem as promising for life, Daswani said. "The exception to this would be [Saturn's moon] Enceladus … [it] is a much smaller body than Europa and couldn't have experienced such high heat, and we know this because Enceladus' density is much lower than Europa's density. The ocean must have been created by a different process."

But Europa's neighbor Ganymede could also have a differentiated interior and might be similar to Europa in that regard. 

Of course, life needs more than just water to exist. "Life is chemical. Life powers itself with chemistry, which is all about the flow of electrons," Steve Mojzsis, a geologist at the University of Colorado who wasn't involved in the new research, told Space.com in an interview. The exchange of electrons yields energy, and it's this kind of energy that gets used for metabolism.

In the future, Daswani wants to research whether or not there is sufficient energy for life to exist in Europa's ocean.

The new study also suggests that the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park was much more explosive in its early history and could be slowing down.

Explosions from volcanic super-eruptions have been some of the most extreme events in Earth’s history, ejecting enormous volumes of material – at least 1,000 times more than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens – with the potential to alter the planet’s climate.

Now, in a study published June 1, 2020, in the peer-reviewed journal Geology, researchers have announced the discovery of two newly identified super-eruptions that occurred 9.0 and 8.7 million years ago, associated with the Yellowstone hotspot track – a volcanic hotspot responsible for large scale volcanism in Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Wyoming. The researchers believe the younger of the two – known as the Grey’s Landing super-eruption – was the volcanic province’s largest and most cataclysmic event. Volcanologist Thomas Knott of University of Leicester is the paper’s lead author. Knott said in a statement:

Based on the most recent collations of super-eruption sizes, it is one of the top five eruptions of all time.

The results indicate the hotspot, which today fuels the famous geysers, mudpots, and fumaroles in Yellowstone National Park, may be waning in intensity. Knott told Scientific American that although the current rate of eruptions suggests that another explosion will not occur for roughly 900,000 years, this estimate is simply a historical average, and it doesn’t forecast how and when nature will act. He said:

We don’t want to encourage complacency – nor do we want to fearmonger.

The team used a combination of techniques to correlate volcanic deposits scattered across tens of thousands of square kilometers. Knott said:

We discovered that deposits previously believed to belong to multiple, smaller eruptions were in fact colossal sheets of volcanic material from two previously unknown super-eruptions at about 9.0 and 8.7 million years ago.

The younger of the two, the Grey’s Landing super-eruption, is now the largest recorded event of the entire Snake-River–Yellowstone volcanic province.

The team estimates the Grey’s Landing super-eruption was 30% larger than the previous record-holder (the well-known Huckleberry Ridge Tuff) and had devastating local and global effects. Knotts said:

The Grey’s Landing eruption enameled an area the size of New Jersey in searing-hot volcanic glass that instantly sterilized the land surface. Anything located within this region would have been buried and most likely vaporized during the eruption.

Particulates would have choked the stratosphere, raining fine ash over the entire United States and gradually encompassing the globe.

Both of the newly discovered super-eruptions occurred during the Miocene, the interval of geologic time spanning 23–5.3 million years ago. Knott said:

These two new eruptions bring the total number of recorded Miocene super-eruptions at the Yellowstone–Snake River volcanic province to six. This means that the recurrence rate of Yellowstone hotspot super-eruptions during the Miocene was, on average, once every 500,000 years.

By comparison, Knott says, two super-eruptions have – so far – taken place in what is now Yellowstone National Park during the past three million years. He said:

It therefore seems that the Yellowstone hotspot has experienced a three-fold decrease in its capacity to produce super-eruption events. This is a very significant decline.

But the new findings, says Knott, have little bearing on assessing the risk of another super-eruption occurring today in Yellowstone.

We have demonstrated that the recurrence rate of Yellowstone super-eruptions appears to be once every 1.5 million years. The last super-eruption there was 630,000 years ago, suggesting we may have up to 900,000 years before another eruption of this scale occurs.

Astronomers witness light produced by the merger of two black holes for first time

The flare was equivalent to the light from a trillion suns.

It doesn’t get any blacker than a black hole, the densest object in the universe. Their gravitational pull is so strong that nothing can escape its clutches, including light.

However, it’s an ironic twist of fate that when two black holes merge in a cataclysmic event, they can also produce a flare of light as powerful as a trillion suns. Astronomers have now confirmed this phenomenon for the first time in a new study.

On May 21, 2019, scientists affiliated with the National Science Foundation’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and the European Virgo detected the gravitational waves generated by the merger of two black holes, in an event dubbed S190521g.

Gravitational waves are essentially ripples in the fabric of spacetime which are generated by interactions between very massive accelerating cosmic objects, such as neutron stars or black holes. Physicists liken gravity waves to the waves generated by a stone thrown into a pond.

Although gravitational waves were predicted by Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, their existence was confirmed very recently in 2016 by LIGO, whose founders were awarded the much deserved Nobel Prize in Physics one year later.

Since then, scientists have found many sequences of gravitational waves, with much more to follow once more sensible detectors come online.

This story isn’t about gravitaional waves, though. While studying S190521g, physicists at Caltech’s Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) also spotted a flare of light emanting from the pair of merging black holes.

“This supermassive black hole was burbling along for years before this more abrupt flare,” Matthew Graham, a research professor of astronomy at Caltech and the project scientist for ZTF, said in a statement. “The flare occurred on the right timescale, and in the right location, to be coincident with the gravitational-wave event.”

Light-emitting black holes mergers aren’t exactly a new idea. They’ve been theorized before by physicists whose models suggested that merging black holes can plow into the hot gas, dust, and all the other jumbled mess of matter hovering around the black hole, waiting to be gobbled up.

The huge momentum and sudden release of kinetic energy of the merged black hole can cause gas to react, generating a bright flare.

Now, the theory has been shown to also work in practice. The light from S190521g was visible for days, before it slowly faded into oblivion about a month later.

However, the researchers say they will keep an eye on this newly birthed supermassive black hole. They hope to catch another flare within a couple of years as it is expected to ram into the surrounding disk of gas once more.

“Supermassive black holes like this one have flares all the time. They are not quiet objects, but the timing, size, and location of this flare was spectacular,” Mansi Kasliwal, an assistant professor of astronomy at Caltech, and co-author of the study, said in a statement.

“The reason looking for flares like this is so important is that it helps enormously with astrophysics and cosmology questions. If we can do this again and detect light from the mergers of other black holes, then we can nail down the homes of these black holes and learn more about their origins.”

Whatever you know about Brian Eno – member of Roxy Music, record producer, visual artist, inventor of ambient music and the Oblique Strategies – it’s not everything to know about this complicated creative genius. This week, he announced the release of the Starsounds Project, a musical composition of the sounds of stars. If you thought stars, including our own sun, sounded like huge blast furnaces, you’re in for a shock.

“These infrasounds were computed by astrophysicist Garik Israelian in 2005. This unique acoustic library inspired Israelian and Dr. Brian May, astrophysicist and legendary guitarist of Queen, to create a festival to bring together stars and music, and so Starmus was born.”

Dr. Brian May is the well-known mathematician and astrophysicist who worked with NASA on the New Horizons mission, promotes awareness of hazardous asteroids and occasionally dabbles in music. Dr. Garik Israelian is another astrophysicist known for his research on extrasolar planets, black holes and neutron stars and is known for his acoustic library of infrasounds produced by stars which cannot be heard by the human ear. However, he is better known for joining with Dr. May to create the Starmus International Festival in 2011 to celebrate astronomy, space exploration, music, art and science. The festivals have attracted musicians like Rick Wakeman and Tangerine Dream and have featured Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, Stephen Hawking, Alexei Leonov, Jim Lovell and more.

“Starsounds”, a hypnotic piece with complex harmonies and mesmerising visuals, is being made available on the internet for the first time – finally, we can listen to the stars and both see and hear the music that they make!”

“Starsounds” is based on Dr. Israelian’s 2014 Starmus festival lecture “Our Acoustic Universe.” Eno took the infrasound recordings and sped them up so they could be heard. Then Paul Franklin and Oliver James of DNEG, an Oscar-winning visual effects studio, created images based on the star waveforms and images of our Sun. “Starsounds” was made available on the internet (You can listen to it here) because there is no 2020 version of the biennial festival.

“Ambient music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular, it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.”

“Starsounds” is considered to be ambient music – a term coined by Brian Eno to describe a form of background music that pulls the listener into the environment. Eno’s best known ambient music is “Ambient 1: Music for Airports,,” but he has used the concept on many projects, including David Bowie’s ‘Berlin Trilogy’ consisting of the albums “Low,” “Heroes” and “Lodger” – a group recognized as some of Bowie’s most innovative music.

Another of Brian Eno’s contributions to creativity is “Oblique Strategies: Over One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas,” a card-based method for promoting creativity created with artist Peter Schmidt. Each of the printed cards contained a challenging constraint to help musicians and artists overcome creative blocks by encouraging lateral thinking. When blocked, the instructions are to pick a card at random and follow the advice. Eno himself used them during the recording of Bowie’s Berlin trilogy – a pretty strong endorsement. Some examples:

• Use an old idea.
• State the problem in words as clearly as possible.
• What would your closest friend do?
• What to increase? What to reduce?
• Try faking it!
• Ask your body.
• Work at a different speed.

The original decks are now extremely rare but a fifth edition of Eno’s Oblique Strategies is available on his website.

Brian Eno, Brian May and others show the benefits of bridging the arts/science right brain/left brain divide. In a world where both arts AND science are being de-emphasized in schools, perhaps a project like Starsounds can inspire today’s youths to return to them. Give it another listen here.

The lost continent of Zealandia, which sank into the ocean 23 million years ago after breaking away from the supercontinent Gondwanaland, isn’t technically a ‘lost continent’ anymore – it was discovered in the 1990s and upgraded from microcontinent in 2017. However, most of its submerged 2 million-square-miles (5 million square kilometers) remain a mystery.

That changed this week when GNS Science — New Zealand’s leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research and consultancy services – unveiled two new maps of Zealandia and an open-to-the-public interactive website with more data on Te Riu-a-Māui / Zealandia – the new name for the lost continent. Te Riu-a-Māui translates to the hills, valleys and plains of Māui – the great East Polynesian ancestor explorer of the Pacific Ocean. Māui is the mythical ancestor of all Polynesians who explored the Pacific.

“We’ve made these maps to provide an accurate, complete and up-to-date picture of the geology of the New Zealand and southwest Pacific area – better than we have had before.

“Their value is that they provide a fresh context in which to explain and understand the setting of New Zealand’s volcanoes, plate boundary and sedimentary basins.”

Geologist Dr. Nick Mortimer, lead author of the maps, reveals in the press release that the maps are so much more than just the boundaries of Zealandia – they will help bring the geological history of New Zealand’s volcanoes from the mythical to the historical.

“Users can zoom and pan around different thematic geoscience webmaps of the region. They can readily view and interrogate the maps and turn layers on or off. They can also query features in the layers and generate custom maps of their own.”

Program Leader Dr. Vaughan Stagpoole describes how easy it is to use the webmaps. Traditionalists can also purchase printed copies at the GNS Science store. The three maps available so far are a Geoscience data webmap showing general information about the size and shape of Zealandia; a Tectonic webmap showing major faults, plate boundaries and locations of ancient and modern volcanoes; and a Bathymetric webmap color-contrasting the solid land and seabed to show coastlines, territorial limits and names of major undersea features. All are provided here courtesy of GNS Science, which holds their license.

While the maps are impressive, GNS Science will continue its research and update the maps and interactive website as more information becomes available.

An interesting photo appeared this week in The Campeche Tribune showing an unidentified flying object taken while the photographer was shooting dust clouds from the Sahara Desert floating over Champotón Bay in the state of Campeche. While the photo is fairly clear despite the dust, the interesting part of the incident is that Campeche is the location of one of Mexico’s more famous UFO sightings – in 2004, Mexican Air Force pilots saw 11 UFOs and filmed them. Are these incidents related?

“I immediately took the photos and shared them in my social network. The characteristics are very similar to those of a flying saucer.”

Kind of like this, only not as close

The Campeche Tribune reports that local resident Luciano Carrillo photographed the UFO (see the photo here) on June 23rd at 7:15 pm. The dust haze is clearly visible and casts a shadow on a small island in the bay, but the saucer-like UFO is reflecting light from somewhere. Unfortunately, that’s the extent of the coverage by The Campeche Tribune and no other local media seems to have picked it up.

Radar operator: “There they go, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, no, there are eight. There we are going to see them, they go to an unusual speed. One, two, three, four, five , six, seven, eight in the screen.”

Captain: “Are they at the same altitude?”

Radar operator: “Affirmative”

Contrast the limited coverage of Luciano Carrillo’s UFO to that of the 11 UFOs seen and recorded by Mexican Air Force pilots on March 5, 2004. That incident and the video was reported by Mexican national news and on major news outlets around the world – CBS and Fox reported on it in the U.S. The objects were said to be flying at an altitude of 11,500 feet and the Air Force C-26 A crew claimed that they followed them and were surrounded by them, but the objects disappeared when they stopped the pursuit. Their speeds were said to have increased from 180 kph (112 mph) to 540 kph (335 mph) in seconds. The C-26A is a small plane and the crew was using it to search for drug smugglers. “I couldn’t say what it was … but I think they’re completely real.”

After hearing testimony like that from Lt. Mario Adrian Vazquez, the infrared equipment operator who recorded the UFOs, Mexico’s Defense Department released the video, the audio and the interviews, confirming the objects were unidentified. (Those were the days.) The news prompted celebrations from those who believed this was evidence of alien visitation, while skeptics suggested they were ball lightning (unlikely at that altitude), meteor fragments (kind of slow for that) or flares from oil rigs in the bay (kind of high for that too).

What other explanation could there have been for these UFOs? The location is about 1000 km (620 miles) from the Popocatapetl volcano where many UFO sightings have been reported. The bay off the coast of Campeche contains underwater asphalt volcanoes, but those aren’t known to attract UFOs. One other thing that wasn’t known by the public at the time but is well known now – UFOs would be seen and recorded later in 2004 by US Navy pilots attached to the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. Was there ever an investigation into whether those two incidents may have been related? If there was, there don’t seem to be any public records of them, nor any follow-up of the Mexican Air Force sighting.

Which brings us back to the latest one. It’s unlikely there will be any government looks at Luciano Carrillo’s photo. It will probably be examined by UFOlogists for evidence of CGI tampering.

Military UFO sightings should get more investigation and probably do. Yet the public rarely gets to see the results. Whether you like the popular investigators and reporters in the UFO world or not, they’re at least keeping the incidents in the public eye, which is keeping pressure on the governments to disclose.

“In 1971, Zel’dovich predicted that quantum fluctuations and classical waves reflected from a rotating absorbing cylinder will gain energy and be amplified. This concept, which is a key step towards the understanding that black holes may amplify quantum fluctuations, has not been verified experimentally owing to the challenging experimental requirement that the cylinder rotation rate must be larger than the incoming wave frequency.”

Until now. This opening paragraph of a new study published in the journal Nature Physics is referring to the idea that black holes are not just matter-sucking bodies consuming all energy in their path but may actually be able to be mined by energy by a brave alien civilization or even humans – provided they can figure out a way to get close enough to plug their battery into the black hole charger. But how?

The idea came from British physicist Roger Penrose. In 1969, he theorized that rotational energy could be harvested from a black hole by lowering an object into the outer edge of its event horizon – the ergosphere – and then collecting the energy the black hole gave off as it dined. The first and biggest challenge was that the collector had to be stationary with the black hole, which meant it had to be moving at faster than the speed of light. This energy-harvesting idea became known as the Penrose Process.

While Sir Roger went on to share the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics with Stephen Hawking for the Penrose–Hawking singularity theorems, renowned Soviet physicist Yakov Zel’dovich picked up the Penrose Process in 1971 and developed an experiment that could be conducted on Earth to test the theory. It involved shooting twisted light waves (used in optical tweezers and ultra-powerful microscopes) at a rotating cylinder which reflect them back with additional energy taken from the cylinder’s rotation due to something called the rotational Doppler Shift. Zel’dovich was certain it would work – he just needed a cylinder that rotated at least a billion times a second. Sigh.

Fast forward to the present. Marion Cromb, a Ph.D. student in the University of Glasgow’s School of Physics and Astronomy and lead author of the paper, came up with an alternative that would allow her and her research team to successfully test the Penrose Process using sound instead of light. Sound obviously travels far slower than light but performs the same way in a rotational Doppler Shift. They used a small ring of speakers to create a twist in the sound waves, then directed them at a rotating sound absorber made from a foam disc. Microphones on the other side picked up the sound as it passed through the disc. And?

“What we heard during our experiment was extraordinary. What’s happening is that the frequency of the sound waves is being doppler-shifted to zero as the spin speed increases. When the sound starts back up again, it’s because the waves have been shifted from a positive frequency to a negative frequency. Those negative-frequency waves are capable of taking some of the energy from the spinning foam disc, becoming louder in the process—just as Zel’dovich proposed in 1971.”

Eureka! … or whatever researchers yell these days — Cromb preferred to comment quietly to Phys.org.   Penrose and Zel’dovich’s theories on the possibility of harvesting energy from a black hole were proven in a lab experiment using the equivalent of your Wifi speaker and a fast-spinning Nerf bat. Yes, that is a long way from charging your spaceship at a roadside black hole for the ride home, but it’s still a proof.

One more point to ponder. Penrose came up with the process as a way for alien civilizations to harness black hole power. The experiment proves this is possible. Does this mean it may already be happening? What would that mean?

When the Men in Black Investigate Monsters and Strange Creatures

Whenever the matter of the Men in Black surfaces, it inevitably provokes debates on UFOs. It’s a far lesser known fact, however, that the MIB also have significant ties to the world of Cryptozoology – the study of unknown and mysterious animals. Just about everyone will know of the associations between the Mothman and the MIB encounters that dominated the city of Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the 1966-1967 era. So, I’ll avoid that particular affair and focus on some more obscure incidents. We’ll begin with a woman named Maureen Abbott. She saw, when she was in her twenties, what she describes as a large “black panther” late one winter’s evening in either 1954 or 1955. Astonishingly, it was doing nothing less than racing along the track as she stood, alone, awaiting a train on the Bakerloo Line of the London Underground. Describing the animal as running very fast, she said that as it passed her, it quickly looked in her direction, with a menace-filled frown on its visage, before vanishing into the darkness of the tunnels. Although Abbott did not see the creature again, she has never forgotten her brief, terrifying encounter with the unknown, deep below the city of London.

There is a very curious sequel to Abbott’s encounter: two-days later, she was visited at her home by a government official who, while the pair sat and drank cups of tea, advised her, in fairly relaxed tones, not to talk about the experience. Of course, to a degree, this aspect of Abbott’s story inevitably conjures up and provokes Men in Black-style imagery. If true, it suggests that elements of the British Government may wish to keep exceedingly quiet the fact that wild animals are on the loose in the heart of London’s old tunnels. Still on the matter of what have become known as “Alien Big Cats,” there is the following: I have seven reports on file where witnesses were on the receiving end of what can only be described as MIB-themed telephone harassment. Notably, in two of those seven cases, the witnesses claimed to have seen the bodies of dead ABCs: one was seen by the side of a road near the English village of Blakeney in 1986, by a shift-worker on his way home, around 3.00 a.m. The other body was almost literally stumbled upon, in October 1987, in an area of woodland near the English town of Bradford on Avon, during the early afternoon.

In both cases, the cats were very large, powerful-looking, and completely black in color. Neither witness told anyone – outside of their immediate family – anything about their encounters, chiefly because they had nothing to back up the claims. In the first case, the witness returned to the site at daybreak, around 7:00 a.m., and the body was gone. In the second case, precisely the same thing happened: when the frightened witness told her husband what she had seen, he accompanied her back to the site, around 3 or 4 hours later, after he returned home from work. That body, too, had curiously vanished. In both instances, however – and despite neither party having made an official report or having informed the local press – the witnesses were on the near-immediate receiving end of curious phone calls, filled with what can only be described as classic MIB-type interference and intimidation.

Moving on, there’s a strange tale from Puerto Rico. It surfaced in 2005, when I was on the island for a week with Paul Kimball’s Redstar Films team. The purpose: to get as much material as possible on the Chupacabra.  While we were there we did an interview with a farmer who lived in a small, isolated village, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Late one night, approximately five years earlier, he jumped out of bed to the screams of his pigs – he was a breeder and seller of the animals. And, given that this was his only source of income, he raced to the back-door, grabbed a handy machete and a flashlight, flung the door open, and charged out into the muggy darkness. The scene was one of carnage. The bodies of a number of dead rabbits – which the farmer also kept – were strewn about the yard, many torn to pieces. And one of his prize-pigs was dead, too, lying on the ground. All of them, the pig and the rabbits, were killed in the same fashion: via three, huge puncture wounds to the neck. As the man, pretty much in a state of shock, prowled around the tree-shrouded yard, he heard movement in the undergrowth.

Wasting no time at all, he threw the machete in what he thought was the right direction. His instinct was right: the machete slammed into something solid. The sound was akin to metal hitting metal. Whatever it was, it didn’t hang around. In seconds, it was gone, having leapt into the safety of the all-encompassing, nearby woods. There were even weirder developments to come – in the form of none other than a man and a woman in black. It was early the next morning when the darkly-garbed duo descended upon the man’s farm. They asked all sorts of questions about the previous night’s events, making it clear to him that they knew far more about the attack in particular – and the mysterious attacker in general – than they were willing to admit. The strange pair listened, in an emotionless fashion, to everything that he had to say, then suddenly turned on their tails and vanished into the woods, along with his machete – which they made clear they were confiscating. The story was over.

Some monsters, like Bigfoot, the Chupacabra, the Yeti, and Ogopogo, are seen time and again and across decades – sometimes even centuries. There are, however, a few bizarre beasts that put in very brief appearances for startled eyewitnesses, and soon vanish, never to be seen again. Perhaps there is no better example of the latter than what has become known as the Dover Demon. It was around 10:30 p.m. on the night of April 21, 1977 when all hell broke loose. William Bartlett, then seventeen, was driving along Farm Street, in Dover, Massachusetts, when he spotted something both amazing and terrifying sitting on a wall. It was nothing less than a small, almost goblin-like, beast of about three and a half feet in height that had huge, glowing eyes and “tendrils” for fingers. Very curiously, it lacked ears, a nose, and a mouth. As for its head, it was described as being “melon”-like and extremely pale.

In the wake of the affair of the Dover Demon, something very strange occurred in the mystery-filled town. Precisely two months to the day that the strange creature was first encountered, a pair of very weird men appeared on the scene. They were not invited, nor were they welcomed. Indeed, the MIB seldom are – if ever. They turned up in the town, quite out of the blue, at what was termed the Dover House. Loren Coleman says that the house “…was a group home in Dover, for emotionally disturbed boys, serving as a residential branch of the treatment center, the Walker School for Boys, in nearby Needham, Massachusetts. In 1977-1978, I was Walker School’s overnight program director and a social worker masters’ graduate therapy intern there.”

They arrived at the Dover House and spoke with one of the staff, who made the very unwise move of giving the men Coleman’s address. Fortunately, the MIBs did not pay a late-night visit to the Coleman home. Nevertheless, the story of the unsettling encounter did get back to Coleman. The two characters, he was told, were dressed in black leather jackets and white motorcycle helmets and warned the woman not to talk about the Dover Demon – under any circumstances, at all. This was very weird, given that the pair claimed to be nothing stranger than “investigators” from National Geographic! There was, however, something very strange about the disturbing duo: they spoke in a monotone, robotic, style, their arms were constantly by their sides, and they stood upright – almost like the military on guard duty.

“He is afraid to give his real name and surname. In Poland talking about UFOs means that people will take you as a person with mental problems.”

Especially when the UFO looks like something out of a 50s sci-fi movie. According to someone who would know – well-known Polish journalist and ufologist Robert Bernatowicz – the set of five photographs were given to him by a fearful Pole who wished to remain anonymous. Bernatowicz revealed that the witness was riding his bike in a remote area near the village of Jastrowo, about 180 miles west of Warsaw.

“The witness reports that he saw a UFO then took the photographs and then has a break in his memory of what happened next.”

Bernatowicz reveals to the Mirror, which appears to be the original source of the story (no Polish media sites seem to have reported it first), that the witness said the UFO was close enough to the treetops that he could hear it scrape against them. The missing memory may explain why there’s no mention of the sound of the UFO – unless it made none. (Look at it again.)

As stated before, Bernatowicz is a well-known ufologist in Poland, but that appears to be the extent of his investigation – it would have been nice to know more about the location, whether there were impressions or burn traces on the ground, evidence of the tree being hit, or other witnesses. Instead, he sent the photos to Philip Mantle, a well-known British UFO researcher and former Director of Investigations for the British UFO Research Association and former MUFON representative for England, who had this to say:

“I have worked on a number of alleged UFO photo-cases down the years with most of them turning out to either be something convention or a hoax.”

Mantle apparently couldn’t tell if the UFO in the photos was “something convention or a hoax,” so he sent them to Jason Gleave, who is described as a former RAF member who also worked for British Aerospace Airbus division and “now specialises in UFO photo analysis.” According to the Mirror, Gleave gave the photographs some intense scrutiny and analysis. (Take another look.)

“I overlaid the five separate images to confirm the movement of the object. It appeared to move in a small radius of approximately 200 feet, staying within approximately 150-200 feet altitude from ground level.”

Gleave points out that the lack of time of day, direction the camera was aiming and other key information made it difficult to better diagnose the object. He did the best he could with what he had …

“Also the shadow of the object on the ground is not detected, which makes me assume the Sun is behind the camera operator thus positioning the shadow off towards the distant foliage (similar to the nearby central tree). I have also embossed one of the images showing an enlarged and enhanced view of the object which is exhibiting no device or cabling system to suspend the object.”

And?

“In my conclusion to my analysis of the five images draws me to believe there is a structured object present and it is of an unknown origin.”

That led Phillip Mantle to state:

“If the analysis of Jason Gleaves is correct, and I have no reason to suggest otherwise, then these five UFO photos from Poland could be the best we have.”

Is it?

The Reddit UFO group, normally a pretty skeptical bunch, has uncommonly mixed feelings about it. Yes, it looks like one of the famous Billy Meier photos which are widely considered to be hoaxes (his ex-wife attests to this) but the UFO does appear to be very small (although not resembling any known drones) and quite a few commenters agree the photos don’t appear to be graphically altered.

It would be helpful if the witness agreed to be hypnotized so the “missing time” might be found. For this writer (after taking one more look himself), even with the strong endorsement by Mantle, the needle on these ‘best ever’ UFO photos is firmly pointed at “Really?”

When my book The Rendlesham Forest UFO Conspiracy was published on April 28 of this year, it provoked a lot of questions from those who read it. One issue surfaced time and again in debates, on radio, and during online chats. It revolved around the theory that the Rendlesham incidents were the creations of advanced hologram-based technology. On more than a few occasions, this led to debates of the infamous Project Blue Beam. If you don’t know what it is alleged to be, read on. Within the field of conspiracy theorizing, there are few greater controversies than Project Blue Beam. Allegedly, it is the brainchild of a secret group of powerful figures in, among many others, NASA, the United Nations, the Bilderbergers, the Trilateral Commission, and the Vatican. Project Blue Beam, so the story goes, will be at the forefront of a program to create a new society dominated by a ruthless one-world government.

And how might such a government come about? By faking the second coming of Jesus Christ, specifically by using sophisticated hologram-type technology to project huge images of the Son of God across the skies of the United States, Canada, Australia, and much of Europe. Other parts of the world will see massive images of Buddha, of Allah, of Krishna, of Muhammad (and the list goes on), depending on the regions, the people and their cultures, and the beliefs of the relevant nations. In mere days, however, each and every one of those images will merge into one far more sinister and terrifying image: that of the Anti-Christ, who will inform the people of Earth that not a single one of the world’s religions has the correct version of events. Only the claim of this nightmarish entity will be seen as the accurate version. As a result, the entire human race will be expected to bow down and worship the Anti-Christ.

Such a thing will result in worldwide chaos, disorder, and anarchy – which the people behind Project Blue Beam shrewdly know only all too well. With the world plunged into states of fear and mayhem, this terrible ruse will then allow the United Nations to coordinate a planet-wide program to enslave the Earth’s entire population. That’s quite a story, to say the least. The source of the undeniably outrageous Project Blue Beam story was Serge Monast, a journalist from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Although Monast began in his career in regular journalism, by 1994 he was focused almost exclusively on conspiracy theories, including matters relative to Masonic-based conspiracy theories and matters relative to the one-world government scenario. It was at this time that Monast claimed to have uncovered massive amounts of secret information on Project Blue Beam, and how it would be utilized to enslave all but that aforementioned elite. That Monast died in December 1996, of a heart attack, and at the age of just fifty-one, has led to suspicions that he was murdered by agents of this dangerous program. The reason: to prevent Monast from blowing the whistle, big-time, on the project.

The story is as fantastic as it is terrifying. But is it true? In my view, no, it’s not true – at all. In my view it’s complete garbage. But, it may very well be garbage that was secretly created for a specific purpose. This brings us back to my book on Rendlesham Forest. For those who haven’t seen the book, here’s a summary from the publisher: “In the final days of December 1980, strange encounters and bizarre incidents occurred in the heart of Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England. Based upon their personal encounters, many of the military personnel who were present at the time believed that something extraterrestrial came down in those dark woods. What if, however, there was another explanation for what happened four decades ago? What if that explanation, if revealed, proved to be even more controversial than the theory that aliens arrived from a faraway world? The ramifications for the field of Ufology would be immense. In his new book, Nick Redfern reveals that one of the most famous UFO cases of all time was really a series of top secret experiments using holograms [my italics], mind-control programs, deception, disinformation, conspiracies and cover-ups. The shocking truth of a forty-year-old mystery is now revealed.”

This issue of utilizing holograms to fool the military personnel in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England in December 1980 sounds very much like certain aspects of Project Blue Beam. Albeit, on an extremely scaled-down size, of course. With that in mind, it would not surprise me at all if the story of Project Blue Beam was a deliberately planned fabrication of such outrageous and over-the-top proportions that no-one would believe that advanced holograms could ever be created and used. In other words, bury the truth of the Rendlesham Forest holograms by inserting into the UFO community wholly-over-the-top tales of incredible, religion-based holograms in the form of Project Blue Beam. I can totally accept a scenario in which a small hologram-based project was deployed to determine if military personnel in an English forest could be deceived into seeing what they believed was a UFO (or several). But, a worldwide deception that targets everyone on the planet? And succeeds to a 100 percent degree? Not a chance.

One final point on all of this: it was in the early 1990s when the theory – that the Rendlesham Forest affair had holograms at its heart – first began to surface. And, it was in 1994 – just a couple of years later – that the Project Blue Beam scenario was fed to Serge Monast, something that led him to write his book, Project Blue Beam (NASA). An attempt to diffuse the real controversies surrounding Rendlesham’s genuine holograms and smother them with over-the-top tales that most people would laugh at? For me, at least, that’s a plausible reason why the utterly bogus Project Blue Beam scenario was concocted.

Getting Too Deep Into Paranormal Phenomena: A Cautionary Story

Over the years, more than a few researchers and writers on paranormal, cryptozoological, and ufological phenomena have changed their views on the subject of their particular choice. That includes me, too. In 2017 I wrote a book titled The Roswell UFO Conspiracy. It was a follow-up to my 2005 book, Body Snatchers in the Desert. Both presented data suggesting that the famous event of July 1947 had nothing to do with aliens. And in this year I wrote The Rendlesham Forest UFO Conspiracy. At its heart is the theory that the famous incident of December 1980 was really a top secret experiment designed to determine the extent to which the human mind can be screwed with. Of course, it’s inevitable that over time minds will change as new and alternative data surfaces. For the most part, it isn’t a big deal. Occasionally, however, it can result in disaster and tragedy – and particularly so when an interest and a fascination combine into one and become an obsession. And this latter point brings me to today’s article and to a certain man under the microscope. His name: Frederick William “Ted” Holiday.

Born in 1921, Holiday had two passions: angling and the Loch Ness Monster. His books included included Fishing in Wales, Angling in Wales, River-Fishing for Sea Trout, The Great Orm of Loch Ness, The Dragon and the Disc, The Goblin Universe, and – with Randall Jones Pugh – The Dyfed Enigma. What is particularly notable about Holiday’s work in the field of the Nessies, is the way in which his theories and conclusions changed – not just slightly but to incredible degrees. Holiday was someone who, in the 1960s, had his very own sightings of strange creatures in the loch. It prompted him to do something that a number of people had already done: he wrote a book on the subject of Scotland’s famous monster. That book was The Great Orm of Loch Ness. It was published in 1968.

Holiday came up with an intriguing theory: that the creatures of the loch were really massive versions of a very small creature called Tullimonstrum gregarium. And what that might be? Let’s see. The Illinois State Geological Survey states: “The Tully monster was a soft-bodied, invertebrate, marine animal – an animal that has no shell and no backbone, and lived in the ocean. It had an elongate, segmented body that tapered at both ends. At the front was a long snout ending in a ‘jaw’ with eight tiny ‘teeth.’ At the other end was a tail and two fins. Two eyes on stalks projected out sideways near the front of the body. Judging from the streamlined shape, flexible body, and maneuverable fins, it’s likely the Tully monster was an active swimmer. Perhaps, like a modern squid, it hovered near the sea bottom. The Tully monsters’ ‘jaws’ and apparent swimming abilities suggest that they attacked other marine animals such as jellyfish and shrimp, perhaps piercing their prey with their ‘teeth’ and sucking out the juices.”

On top of that, Tullimonstrum gregarium lived solely in the muddy landscapes of Pennsylvania, USA. Oh, and one more important thing that should be noted: it went extinct around 300 million years ago. None of these clearly important points appeared to bother Holiday in the slightest, who continued to pursue his theory with a great deal of enthusiasm. Even though Ted Holiday sincerely believed that the Tullimonstrum gregarium theory had merit, he wasn’t able to shake off a deep, foreboding feeling that there was something more to the Loch Ness Monsters, something that – rather paradoxically – implied they were flesh and blood animals, but ones possessed of supernatural qualities. It was a feeling that would ultimately become a full-blown, unhealthy obsession (filled with paranoia), and one that pretty much dictated the rest of Holiday’s short life.

By the time The Great Orm of Loch Ness was published, Holiday had not only been to the lair of the Nessies on numerous occasions, he had also had the opportunity to speak to many witnesses to the beasts. In doing so, Holiday noticed a most curious, and even unsettling, pattern. There were far more than a random number of reports on record where eyewitnesses to the creatures had tried to photograph them, only to fail miserably. As time progressed, it became abundantly obvious to Holiday that this was not down to mere chance. When an excited soul on the shore went to grab their camera, the beast would sink beneath the waves. When someone even just thought about taking a picture, the monster would vanish below. On other occasions, cameras would malfunction. Pictures would come out blank or fogged. It was as if the Nessies were dictating, and manipulating, the situations in which the witnesses found themselves. That is exactly what Holiday came to believe was going on. That was, largely, when the paranoia started to kick in.

By 1969, Holiday’s life was dominated and dictated by weird synchronicities – meaningful coincidences, in simple terms – something that led Holiday to question both his sanity and even the very nature of reality itself. What had begun as an exciting hunt for unknown animals was now rapidly mutating into something very different. The outcome: In 1973, Holiday wrote his second book on Nessie, The Dragon and the Disc. In that book, Holiday made connections between UFOs and lake-monsters (and not just those in Loch Ness, but in Ireland and elsewhere, too). Holiday became fascinated by the fact that none other than the “Great Beast” himself, Aleister Crowley, had a home at Loch Ness: Boleskine House. To his deep concern, Holiday learned of a dragon-worshiping cult operating at the loch. Also, Holiday spoke with those who had seen UFOs over that huge expanse of water, and he even engaged in an exorcism (in June 1973), to try and banish the beasts from the murky depths. On top of that, Holiday had a traumatic encounter with a Man in Black, no less – also in 1973.

For Holiday things were becoming not just weird, but downright uncanny. Unsettling, too. Indeed, one gets a sense that from the late sixties onward Holiday’s life was filled with stress, paranoia and a sense that he was no longer in control of his life. Something else – something supernatural – was taunting the man. Something akin to the “Trickster” phenomenon, we might say. Holiday continued with his research, though. It has to be said, however, that by this time Holiday had no time for Tullimonstrum gregarium. Now, it’s time to move ahead to 1979. That’s when the aforementioned The Dyfed Enigma was published. The book described “dramatic manifestations of ufological activity which occurred in West Wales between 1974 and 1977.” In other words, Holiday was now deep into the UFO subject. But not for long: 1979 was also the year in which Holiday died – from a heart attack – at the age of fifty-nine. Matters aren’t quite over, however.

In 1986, Holiday’s posthumous book, The Goblin Universe, was published. Its subjects included the monsters of Loch Ness (of course!), Alien Big Cats, life after death, that 1973 exorcism at Loch Ness, phantom black dogs, Bigfoot, synchronicities, the work of John Michell (the author of The Flying Saucer Vision) and the writings of John Keel. As an aside, Keel and Holiday corresponded in the 1970s. Keel warned Holiday of the hazards of getting deep into the investigation of such phenomena. Holiday chose to push on with his new and alternative theories and left Tullimonstrum gregarium way behind him. And then he died.

Huge UFO Shoots Past Sun, NASA Deletes Access To Originals! June 2020, UFO Sighting News.

I found a huge rectangle UFO shooting past our sun and its got to be several miles across or more. I tried to find it on Helioviewer.org a SOHO/NASA site, but I got an error message. Then I tried using official ESA European Space Administration software...and again, error message. Then I went into the individual photos online and input my own URL, but these photo times do not exist. Thats there different sources all erased from existence. I found it at a fourth source and there is no way in hell I will reveal it, but its a NASA source thats all I will say. I don't want my source cut off too.

This UFO is seen in twenty different photos in a row! Its seen over a three day period and NASA said nothing to the public! If I handout caught it, the world may have never even known this huge UFO existed and traveled right past earth and our sun. But I'm on it, and wont let those aliens get past me unseen.

Senate Admits US Navy Has A UFO Task Force

The call for this review of information was included in a Senate Intelligence Committee report accompanying a draft of the Intelligence Authorization Act – which concerns funding the government’s intelligence activities – initiated by Senator Marco Rubio.

The report asked for a ‘detailed analysis of unidentified aerial phenomena data and intelligence reporting collected or held by the Office of Naval Intelligence, including data and intelligence reporting held by the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force’, according to Motherboard.

It also expressed the need for a ‘detailed analysis’ of ‘unidentified phenomena data’ that has been collected by ‘geospatial intelligence, signals intelligence, human intelligence; and measurement and signals intelligence’.

Not only that, but the committee report wanted a ‘detailed analysis of data of the FBI, which was derived from investigations of intrusions of unidentified aerial phenomena data over restricted United States airspace’.

The report continued:

The Committee supports the efforts of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force at the Office of Naval Intelligence to standardise collection and reporting on unidentified aerial phenomenon, any links they have to adversarial foreign governments, and the threat they pose to U.S. military assets and installations.

However, the Committee remains concerned that there is no unified, comprehensive process within the Federal Government for collecting and analysing intelligence on unidentified aerial phenomena, despite the potential threat.

The main takeaway from this, apart from the upcoming report, is that the Senate has finally acknowledged the existence of a UFO task force. Prior to this report, the existence of such a task force had only been alluded to.

Before you get all excited and think this means the Senate has also acknowledged the existence of aliens, I hate to break it to you but that’s just not the case. UFOs – or UAPs, as the US government calls them – in this case refer to ‘potential aerospace or other threats’ to national security.

The committee has asked that the report identifies whether these phenomena are the work of a foreign adversary who ‘may have achieved breakthrough aerospace technology that could put the United States strategic or conventional forces at risk’.

In simple terms, they’re not looking for aliens… so they say.

US senators are demanding to see the Pentagon's UFO files as they push for influence over a secretive Navy program. 

The Senate Intelligence Committee wants defense chiefs to publish a report on the Pentagon's UFO program and any phenomena it observes.

The committee says it 'supports the efforts of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force' - appearing to confirm that such a program still exists.  

In 2017 the Pentagon acknowledged funding a secret multi-million dollar program to investigate UFO sightings, although defense chiefs claimed it had ended in 2012. 

Senators now want to regulate the program - saying the public should be better informed of its activities.

The Senate's focus on the program stems less out of a concern over extraterrestrials, and more from the threat posed by real-world US adversaries such as China.

The Pentagon admitted earlier this month that a nuclear detonation in space by Russia or China was among the possible threats to US interests. 

The US is particularly worried about China's espionage capabilities, including use of drones and other aerial technology. 

The UFO program, managed by the Office of Naval Intelligence, is responsible for 'collection and reporting on unidentified aerial phenomenon, any links they have to adversarial foreign governments, and the threat they pose to US military assets and installations.'

But senators said that information sharing had been 'inconsistent' and called for a detailed report on the program's progress and any phenomena it observes.  

The provision is part of the 2021 intelligence authorization bill, which has yet to make its way to the full Senate. 

If it passes, the Pentagon will have 180 days to submit a report to Congress.

The Pentagon said in 2017 that an earlier operation called the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Programme had ended in 2012.   

'It was determined that there were other, higher priority issues that merited funding and it was in the best interest of the DoD to make a change,' a spokeswoman said at the time.

But the Pentagon was less clear about whether the UFO program continues to hover somewhere in the vast universe of the US defense establishment.

'The DoD takes seriously all threats and potential threats to our people, our assets, and our mission and takes action whenever credible information is developed,' the spokeswoman said.

In April this year, the Pentagon released three videos taken by US Navy pilots showing mid-air encounters with unexplained objects.

The grainy black and white footage had previously been leaked and the Navy had acknowledged they were genuine videos. 

One of the videos was shot in November 2004 and the other two in January 2015.

In one, a weapons sensor operator appears to lose lock on a rapidly moving object which seconds later suddenly accelerates away to the left and out of view.

In another video which is tracking an object above the clouds, one pilot wonders if it is a drone.  

The Department of Defense said it was 'releasing the videos in order to clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real, or whether or not there is more to the videos.'

'The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as 'unidentified,'' the Pentagon statement said. 

Retired US Navy pilot David Fravor, who saw one of the 'UFOs' in 2004, said the object he saw had been moving erratically.

'As I got close to it ... it rapidly accelerated to the south, and disappeared in less than two seconds,' Fravor told CNN in 2017.

'This was extremely abrupt, like a ping pong ball, bouncing off a wall. It would hit and go the other way.'

Former Nevada senator Harry Reid, whose state hosts the top secret Area 51 Air Force facility, welcomed release of the videos.

'I'm glad the Pentagon is finally releasing this footage, but it only scratches the surface of research and materials available,' he tweeted.

'The U.S. needs to take a serious, scientific look at this and any potential national security implications. The American people deserve to be informed.'

Hubble telescope spots a flapping bat signal in space

The Hubble Space Telescope spotted a bat signal out in the cosmos, 1,300 light-years from home. And the bat? It's flapping its wings. 

In new observations released Thursday (June 25), Hubble has captured the young star HBC 672, nicknamed Bat Shadow. The far-off star, which lies in the Serpens Nebula, got its moniker because it sports a wing-like shadowy feature, which happens to be so large, it stretches out about 200 times the diameter of our entire solar system. The star has a planet-forming disk surrounding it that casts this wing-shaped shadow across the cloudy star-forming region. 

But, while the bat-like feature might seem subtle (and might even take you a few minutes to spot), with these new images it is more apparent as you can see the structure's "wings" "flapping." That's right, much to the surprise of the team observing the star, Bat Shadow "flaps." In a new study, researchers led by Klaus Pontoppidan, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland, observed the star using Hubble and noticed this shadow "flapping."

Pontoppidan and the other scientists think that this "flapping," which you can see in the video above, might be caused by a planet tugging on Bat Shadow and its surrounding disc and warping that disc. The researchers didn't expect to see the shadowy feature "flapping." But, as they observed Bat Shadow over 13 months, it looked like the shadow had moved. 

"You have a star that is surrounded by a disc, and the disc is not like Saturn's rings — it's not flat. It's puffed up," Pontoppidan said in a statement. "And so that means that the light from the star, if it goes straight up, can continue straight up — it's not blocked by anything. But if it tries to go along the plane of the disk, it doesn't get out, and it casts a shadow." 

The scientists concluded that a planet tugging on the star's disk and warping it would likely need at least 180 days to orbit the star and be about as far from its star as Earth is to the sun. The researchers also suggested that the star's disk is likely flared, meaning it angles out like the end of a trumpet, according to the same statement. The team also thinks another planet, or less likely a small star, may be embedded in Bat Shadow's disk. 

The research is described in a paper published June 10 to the preprint server arXiv. The study has been accepted to be published in an upcoming edition of the Astrophysical Journal.

Newfound 'super-Earth' exoplanets bear clues about atmospheres of alien worlds

The brightest red dwarf star in the sky may be the best chance astronomers have yet to analyze the atmospheres of alien worlds — and perhaps detect whether those worlds have life, a new study finds.

Scientists focused on the red dwarf star GJ 887, also known as Gliese 887. (Red dwarfs are the most common kind of star in the galaxy, and weigh between 7.5% and 50% the mass of the sun.) At a distance of about 10.7 light-years from Earth, Gliese 887 is the twelfth-closest star. Furthermore, at visible wavelengths, Gliese 887 is the brightest red dwarf in the sky, and with nearly half the sun's mass, Gliese 887 is the heaviest red dwarf star within about 20 light-years of Earth.

Previous work found that many red dwarfs host planetary systems, ones usually made up of multiple small worlds. Still, "we've been looking for exoplanets orbiting Gliese 887 for nearly 20 years, and while we saw hints of a planetary signal, it wasn't strong enough to convince ourselves that it was a planet," study lead author Sandra Jeffers, an astrophysicist at the University of Göttingen in Germany, told Space.com.

Pressing forward, the researchers examined Gliese 887 for 80 nights in 2018. They relied on the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) instrument at La Silla Observatory in Chile, combining this data with archival measurements of the star spanning nearly two decades.

Astronomers use two strategies to discover most exoplanets, or worlds beyond our solar system. One method relies on how distant worlds regularly block out a fraction of light from their stars as they pass in front of their stars from the observer's perspective. However, this method will only spot planets that pass through the line of sight between Earth and their stars, meaning it will only detect a small fraction of exoplanets.

Instead, the scientists in this latest work looked for any wobbles from Gliese 887 due to gravitational tugs from orbiting planets. They found the red dwarf has at least two "super-Earth" exoplanets, dubbed Gliese 887 b and Gliese 887 c. The former is about 4.2 times Earth's mass and orbits just 6.8% of an astronomical unit (AU) from its star (one astronomical unit is the average distance between Earth and the sun), whereas the latter is about 7.6 times Earth's mass and orbits 12% of an AU from the red dwarf.

The researchers also found evidence for a possible third planet farther out from Gliese 887. Although the red dwarf's two confirmed planets are likely too hot for life as we know it on Earth, this potential third planet might lie within the star's habitable zone, where surface temperatures are suitable to host liquid water.

The bright light from this red dwarf might help astronomers learn more about the atmospheres of its planets by illuminating what ingredients make up those skies, Jeffers said. (The spectrum or wavelengths of light that an element absorbs or emits can act like a fingerprint, revealing the identity of the material in question.)

In addition, Gliese 887 is unusually quiet when it comes to flares and other explosive activity when compared to other red dwarfs. This factor would make it easier to analyze exoplanet atmospheres, because such activity could get confused with atmospheric signals, she added.

"The host star Gliese 887 is the best star in close proximity to the sun to understand whether its exoplanets have atmospheres and whether they have life, because it is such a bright and quiet star," Jeffers said.

The unusually quiet nature of Gliese 887 suggests that if it does possess a planet within its habitable zone, that world might have a greater chance at life than other red dwarf planets, which often erupt with dangerous flares.

"When a star is active, this makes it more likely that the original atmosphere can be blown away, with the result that the planet is less shielded from the star's activity," Jeffers said.

In the future, "our next step is to see if there is a third planet, and to try and detect exoplanetary atmospheres using the James Webb Space Telescope due to be launched next year," Jeffers said.

The scientists detailed their findings in the June 26 issue of the journal Science.
