This UFO was captured on a hunters camera in California last month. The camera shows a tree stump with a block of salt and some other food on it. To the upper right sites a glowing object thats seems to be disk shaped. The disk has a light shining down from it onto the tree stump. It almost looks like a scene from a classic alien movie doest it? The classic disk design is wider on the edges and has a hump on its upper and lower center areas. The UFO appears to be 1.5 meters across. This is absolute proof that aliens and UFOs are highly interested in everything on Earth, not just humans.

White orbs in clear blue sky. White orbs seen high in the sky from backyard. Approximately 3 or so at first appearance , three objects looked like they were dropped from the sky and coming toward earth, meanwhile noticed the 100 or so orbs farther up in the sky. Orbs stayed in random, stationary pattern then most of the group floated East, while apx six orbs remained hovering In groups of two. Through binoculars it appeared that an elongated object was hanging down from the center, bottom of the closer orbs but still to far away to see definition. New computer simulations by an international team of researchers suggest the asteroid that doomed the dinosaurs, 66 million years ago, struck Earth at the “deadliest possible” angle. That is, these researchers say, it struck at an angle of about 60 degrees, thereby maximizing the amount of climate-changing gases thrust into the upper atmosphere. Such a strike would have unleashed billions of tons of sulphur into the air, blocking the sun, and triggering a nuclear winter that killed the dinosaurs and 75 percent of life on Earth at the time.
All of this is according to a study published May 26, 2020 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications,
The – from Imperial College London, the University of Freiburg, and the University of Texas at Austin – examined the shape and subsurface structure of the Chicxulub meteorite crater in what’s now Mexico. Afterwards, they used that geophysical data to create computer models of the event. Their computer simulations helped them diagnose the impact angle and direction of the incoming meteor. They said in a statement that the new models are:
… the first ever fully 3D simulations to reproduce the whole event, from the initial impact to the moment the final crater.
Gareth Collins, of Imperial College London is the new work’s lead author. Collins said:
For the dinosaurs, the worst-case scenario is exactly what happened. The asteroid strike unleashed an incredible amount of climate-changing gases into the atmosphere, triggering a chain of events that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. This was likely worsened by the fact that it struck at one of the deadliest possible angles.
Our simulations provide compelling evidence that the asteroid struck at a steep angle, perhaps 60 degrees above the horizon, and approached its target from the north-east. We know that this was among the worst-case scenarios for the lethality on impact, because it put more hazardous debris into the upper atmosphere and scattered it everywhere – the very thing that led to a nuclear winter.

The upper layers of earth around the Chicxulub crater contain high amounts of water as well as porous carbonate and evaporite rocks. When heated and disturbed by the impact, these rocks would have decomposed, says the study, flinging vast amounts of carbon dioxide, sulphur and water vapor into the atmosphere. According to the research:
The sulphur would have been particularly hazardous as it rapidly forms aerosols – tiny particles that would have blocked the sun’s rays, halting photosynthesis in plants and rapidly cooling the climate. This eventually contributed to the mass extinction event that killed 75 per cent of life on Earth.
It turns out that an impact angle of about 60 degrees is ideal for hurling as much vapour into the air as possible, Collins told New Scientist. If the asteroid ha came in from straight overhead, he said, the asteroid would have smashed up more rock but not sent as much into the atmosphere, and if it was more of a glancing blow, less rock would have been vaporized.
The analysis by these researchers was also informed by recent results from drilling into the 125 mile (200 km) wide crater, which brought up rocks containing evidence of the extreme forces generated by the impact. Read about how the scientists conducted the study here.
Bottom line:A new study suggests that the asteroid that doomed the dinosaurs struck Earth at an angle of about 60 degrees, which maximized the amount of climate-changing gases thrust into the upper atmosphere.

This week marks the 30-day milestone until the launch window of July 20-August 11, 2020 opens for NASA's Perseverance rover and its journey to Mars.
For nearly 20 years, NASA has been sending out robotic rovers to the Red Planet where they roamed the dusty surface on their own for years.
However, the latest addition to the rover family will have a tiny companion by its side, or rather hovering above it.
NASA is testing out its ability to fly a helicopter on another planet with the upcoming mission to Mars as the Ingenuity helicopter hitches a ride along with the rover to the Red Planet. Ingenuity will be strapped up to the Perseverance rover's belly for the ride, covered by a shield to protect it during landing.
Once the duo has landed on Mars in February, 2021, the shield covering will drop and Ingenuity will separate from its robotic companion.
After it detaches itself from the rover, Ingenuity will fly solo in a series of test flights. The pair will be apart by at least 160 feet before they each start doing their own thing, although Perseverance will still keep a watchful eye on its sidekick as it records the helicopter's first attempts at flight using its onboard cameras.

"The thing that has me the most excited as the NASA administrator is getting ready to watch a helicopter fly on another world," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said during a press conference that previewed the mission on June 17. "That's something that's never been done before in human history, and here we are."
Over the course of 30 Martian days (a day on Mars is about 40 minutes longer than it is on Earth), a team of NASA engineers on the ground will test out Ingenuity's ability to fly. But they're going to take things slow.
For its first flight, the helicopter will take off a few feet off the ground and hover in the air for around 20 to 30 seconds. Although brief, those first seconds of flight will be considered a major milestone as the first powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere, much different than our own world. Mars' atmosphere is less than one percent the density of Earth's atmosphere.
After proving it can fly, the Ingenuity helicopter will attempt more flights, each one with further distance and a higher altitude than the one before it.
"Getting it to Mars, getting it safely off the vehicle, we're going to learn a lot," Matt Wallace, deputy project manager for the Mars 2020 mission, said during the press conference. "We are not looking for an extensive and ambitious return from this technology, we're looking to learn those first few things that we need to learn."
The helicopter could fly for up to 90 seconds, to distances of almost 980 feet at a time and about 10 to 15 feet above the ground.
Ingenuity weighs about four pounds on Earth, and will weigh 1.5 pounds on Mars. It is powered through solar panels, that charge up its lithium-ion batteries for one 90-second flight per Martian day.
The Perseverance rover will join Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars back in August, 2012, and is still roaming the Red Planet to this day.
NASA previously sent two other rovers to Mars, Spirit and Opportunity, which landed on the Red Planet in January, 2004. Spirit ended its mission in 2010 — way past its planned 90-day expedition on the planet — while Opportunity tragically lost contact with Earth in 2018 after a massive dust storm swept over Mars.
The goal of the Perseverance mission will be to look for clues of ancient life on Mars, and understand the history of the planet that scientists believed was once a wet, habitable world.
The mission will also test out conditions for possible human exploration of Mars by trialing a method of producing oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, characterizing environmental conditions such as water and dust on Mars, and looking for resources.

Scientists have been perplexed by the origins of chondrules — the tiny, mysterious spheres found in many of the meteorites that have crashed into Earth. But now, they’ve got a new hypothesis for where they came from, and it may be the most brutal space theory so far.
As the idea goes, tiny proto-planets covered in oceans of lava — yes, lava planets, as seen in science fiction everywhere from Star Wars to Star Trek to Star Fox — may have incinerated asteroids as they flew by, melting then flash-freezing bubbles (the chondrules) into them in the process, according to The New York Times. If it’s true, then it means that probing these chondrules could give scientists a rare glimpse into the hellish early days of our solar system.
No Good Answers
The research, presented this month at the American Astronomical Society’s meeting, is still imperfect — chondrules and the meteorites that contain them continue to elude an easy description.
But this new explanation checks many boxes, and it’s almost poetic that, as the NYT reports, it mirrors an early 19th-century description of chondrules as “droplets of fiery rain.”
Circling Back
Interestingly enough, the idea that meteors bubbled as they flew past lava oceans suggests that chondrules would be extremely rare — yet chondrule-packed chondrites make up 86 percent of the meteorites that hit Earth. And some of them even have chondrules that seem to have melted on two separate occasions, Rowan University researcher Harold Connolly, a critic of the theory, told the NYT.
“Chondrule formation is just a really thorny problem,” University of Manchester researcher Rhian Jones told the NYT. “So anytime somebody comes up with something completely different it’s very welcome, because we don’t have the answer.”
Although Pluto orbits the sun at an average distance of 3.7 billion miles (5.9 billion kilometers), some studies claim that the icy dwarf planet may havea liquid ocean under its surface. According to a new study, the accretion of new material during Pluto’s early geological history may have generated enough heat to sustain the formation of this ocean, which would go on to continuously freeze over billions of years.

Pluto is so far away from the sun that it lies inside the Kuiper Belt, a group of rocks and ice left over from the formation of the solar system. It’s really no wonder that today the planet looks like a barren ball of ice and rock.
However, detailed images of Pluto’s surface taken during flybys by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft have revealed intriguing geological features that can tell us many things about the dwarf planet’s past.
According to Francis Nimmo, a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UC Santa Cruz, Pluto’s surface shows evidence of both ancient and modern extensions of its surface. This suggests that Pluto may have been ‘hot’ during its early days.
To understand why this matters, we have to make a brief tangent to talk about how water freezes. Most liquids shrink when they are cooled because molecules are moving slower, making them less able to overcome the attractive intermolecular forces that draw them closer together. When the freezing point is reached, the substance solidifies in a tightly packed crystalline matrix.
Water is an exception to this chemical behavior. Liquid water also contracts when cooled, but only until it is chilled to approximately 4 degrees Celsius. If you cool water past this threshold, it will actually expand slightly. Cool it further to its freezing point and the water will expand by about 9%.
So, water expands when it freezes and contracts when it melts — and this has important implications for Pluto’s history.
“If Pluto had a subsurface ocean shortly after it formed, that ocean would have been continuously freezing over solar system history. That would cause Pluto to be expanding and that would result in specific geologic features we can look for. In contrast, if Pluto started with a cold ice shell, that ice would have warmed and melted slowly from the heat of radioactive decay forming an ocean. That ocean would have been refreezing in more recent times as the heat from radioactive decay waned. This would lead to early compressional tectonics followed by later extension,” Carver Bierson, UCSC graduate student and co-author of the new study, told ZME Science.
If Pluto had a ‘cold start’, compression on its surface would have occurred early on, followed by more recent extensions. However, if it had a hot start, then extension would have occurred throughout Pluto’s history — and this seems to be the case, current observations suggest.
“When we look at the surface of Pluto we don’t see any clearly compressional features even on the oldest terrains. We do see many extensional features, most of which are recent. The oldest tectonic features we see look to be extensional, but are hard to interpret because they are so eroded. Taken together we think this favors Pluto’s ocean already being present very early in Pluto’s history,” Bierson added.
Pluto’s hot past
Where could all this energy have come from? Pluto is too far from the sun to be of consequential difference, which leaves us with only two main possible sources of energy.
One is the heat released through the decay of radioactive elements in the rock, the other is gravitational energy released during impact with asteroids and other cosmic bodies. Early in the solar system’s history, it was quite common for planets to be bombarded by asteroids and meteorites.
Calculations performed by the researchers suggest that if all of that gravitational energy was retained as heat, Pluto could have supported an initial liquid ocean.
In reality, however, we know that is simply not possible — some of that energy will escape into space.
“How Pluto was put together in the first place matters a lot for its thermal evolution,” Nimmo said in a press release. “If it builds up too slowly, the hot material at the surface radiates energy into space, but if it builds up fast enough the heat gets trapped inside.”
The researchers found that if Pluto formed over a period of less than 30,000 years, then it would have most certainly been hot. If it took a couple million years for accretion of proto-Pluto to take place, then a hot start would only be possible if a large impactor buried its energy deep beneath the surface.
“If Pluto’s ocean was there early on it raises another question, “What was the heat source to form that ocean?” Today Pluto sits in an extremely cold part of the solar system. Its surface temperature is about 45 Kelvin (-480 Fahrenheit). When Pluto was forming new material would have been coming in and impacting its surface. Each impact is like an explosion that will warm the nearby area. If Pluto formed slowly, the surface would cool between each impact and generally stay very cold. If however Pluto formed quickly you have impact on top of impact and the surface doesn’t have time to cool. We calculate that if Pluto formed in less than 30000 years the heat from these impacts could have been sufficient to lead to an early ocean,” Bierson said.
There are a lot of assumptions and ‘ifs’ in this study, but if the findings are confirmed, other large objects in the Kuiper belt likely started out hot, possibly harboring oceans billions of years ago.
What’s intriguing is that these oceans could persist to this day in the largest objects in the belt, such as the dwarf planets Eris and Makemake, shielded under a blanket of thick ice.
“Pluto is the first Kuiper Belt object we visited and what we found was amazing. There is no reason to think that Pluto’s neighbors (Eris, Makemake, Haumea) are any less interesting. From this work, we suggest that they also should have formed with oceans, but we don’t know if they would have completely refrozen over solar system history. Up to now, we haven’t been able to see those worlds as more than points of light in the night sky. This is hard because the Kuiper belt is very very far away. It took New Horizons 9 years from launch to Pluto and it was one of the fastest spacecraft ever launched. Still, I am optimistic that with new telescopes and maybe a future mission we can keep unlocking their secrets,” Bierson concluded.
In archeology, sometimes you can teach an old site new tricks, it seems. New research reports the discovery of at least 20 huge shafts forming a circle at Durrington Walls, the site of a stone-age village about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from Stonehenge.

The discovery of this major, buried monument could help us better understand how the iconic stone circle in England came to be, or what its purpose was.
Ancient digs
“The size of the shafts and circuit surrounding Durrington Walls is currently unique,” says Vince Gaffney, an archaeologist at the University of Bradford and corresponding author of the paper describing the findings.
“It demonstrates the significance of Durrington Walls Henge, the complexity of the monumental structures within the Stonehenge landscape, and the capacity and desire of Neolithic communities to record their cosmological belief systems in ways, and at a scale, that we had never previously anticipated.”
When the shafts were first found, the team assumed they were natural structures, formed by water flowing through the chalky subsurface. However, remote sensing and sampling quickly showed that this wasn’t the case, and that the shafts were built by human hands.
Researchers say the shafts appear to have been dug around 4,500 years ago. Exactly what their purpose was remains unclear, but the team suspects they served a religious purpose, for example acting as a boundary around a circular monument known as the Durrington Walls henge.
The shafts are, on average, 864 metres from Durrington Walls henge, forming a circle around 2 kilometers in diameter. They are over 10 meters (32 feet) in diameter and 5 meters (16 feet) deep. Although 20 have been discovered so far, there are likely more to be found at the site.
“When these pits were first noted it was thought they might be natural features—solution hollows in the chalk,” says Gaffney. But geophysical surveys carried out at the side showed “there was a pattern on a massive scale.”
Britain is a hotbed for archaeology. Stonehenge, built between 3000 B.C. and 1600 B.C., is iconic across much of the world and one of the country’s top tourist attractions, and a feat of engineering during its day — but it’s by no means the country’s only stone circle. These structures are thousands of years old and the reasons why they were built are still poorly understood It was likely a religious or spiritual place, or a means of keeping track of the seasons.
Among the more exciting implications of this finding is that it betrays a relatively advanced understanding of mathematics, without which the ancient builders couldn’t have produced a neat and organized circle on the scale seen here.
The paper “A Massive, Late Neolithic Pit Structure associated with Durrington Walls Henge” has been published in the journal Internet Archaeology.

Every year – from May through August in the Northern Hemisphere, and from November through February in the Southern Hemisphere – people at high latitudes report seeing noctilucent or night-shining clouds. We read at SpaceWeather.com this weekend that these beautiful clouds have now descended to their lowest latitude of the 2020 season so far: +44 degrees North in Bend, Oregon.
I woke up at 3:30 a.m. to a very bright sky shining through the shades. I got up to take a look and was surprised to find noctilucent clouds. I live in Bend Oregon and since living here (18 years) have seen this only two other times. Beautiful.
Noctilucent clouds typically descend even lower after the summer solstice, according to Tony Phillips of SpaceWeather.com. If you’re at a northerly latitude, now is a good time to watch for them!

When the sun is below the ground horizon but visible from the high altitude of noctilucent clouds, sunlight illuminates these clouds, causing them to glow in the dark night sky.

What are noctilucent clouds? Noctilucent clouds form in the highest reaches of the atmosphere – the mesosphere – as much as 50 miles (80 km) above the Earth’s surface. They’re thought to be made of ice crystals that form on fine dust particles from meteors. They can only form when temperatures are incredibly low and when there’s water available to form ice crystals.
Why do these clouds – which require such cold temperatures – form in the summer? It’s because of the dynamics of the atmosphere. You actually get the coldest temperatures of the year near the poles in summer at that height in the mesosphere.
Here’s how it works: during summer, air close to the ground gets heated and rises. Since atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude, the rising air expands. When the air expands, it also cools down. This, along with other processes in the upper atmosphere, drives the air even higher causing it to cool even more. As a result, temperatures in the mesosphere can plunge to as low as -210 degrees Fahrenheit (-134 degrees Celsius).
In the Northern Hemisphere, the mesosphere often reaches these temperatures by mid-May, in most years.
Since the clouds are so sensitive to the atmospheric temperatures, they can act as a proxy for information about the wind circulation that causes these temperatures. First of all, they can tell scientists that the circulation exists, and also tell us something about the strength of the circulation.
How can I see noctilucent clouds? If you want to see the clouds, what steps should you take? Remember, you have to be at a relatively high latitude on Earth to see them: typically between about 45 degrees and 60 degrees north or south latitude, although the clouds can sometimes be seen at lower latitudes, particularly following the solstices.
For best results, look for these clouds from about May through August in the Northern Hemisphere, and from November through February in the Southern Hemisphere.
Noctilucent clouds are primarily visible when the sun is just below the horizon, say, from about 90 minutes to about two hours after sunset or before sunrise. At such times, when the sun is below the ground horizon but visible from the high altitude of noctilucent clouds, sunlight illuminates these clouds, causing them to glow in the dark night sky.

Scientists studying these clouds have included those from NASA’s AIM (Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere) satellite. This satellite, launched in 2007, has observed noctilucent clouds using several onboard instruments to collect information such as temperature, atmospheric gases, ice crystal size and changes in the clouds, as well as the amount of meteoric space dust that enters the atmosphere. Noctilucent clouds can be seen from space, too. Astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) took this photo on January 5, 2013, when ISS was over the Pacific Ocean south of French Polynesia. Below the brightly-lit noctilucent clouds, across the center of the image, the pale orange band is the stratosphere.
Bottom line: Noctilucent or night-shining clouds are seen during summer in Earth’s high-latitude regions. They form in the highest reaches of the atmosphere – the mesosphere – as much as 50 miles (80 km) above the surface.

Still, the origin of a strange, balloon-like UFO that appeared in the sky over the city of Sendai, Japan, yesterday (June 17) around 7 a.m. local time, remains a mystery a full day after its sudden arrival. The object looked like a large white, unmanned balloon attached to two crossed propellers, according to news reports. The UFO lingered in the sky, largely motionless, for several hours before drifting over the Pacific Ocean, AFP reported.

While a weather balloon seems like the obvious explanation (they are widely available for purchase), a spokesperson from the Sendai bureau of the Japan Meteorological Agency told AFP that "it's not ours." In his daily press briefing later that day, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga also denied any knowledge of the balloon's origin, according to AFP.
Suga also tried to pop any rumors that the balloony UFO was the dastardly instrument of a foreign government. Earlier on Wednesday, social media speculation about the object ran rampant, giving air to theories that the UFO was distributing North Korean propaganda or even spreading the novel coronavirus.
The evidence for either of these theories — much like the balloon itself — looks like a big, fat goose egg. For a truly head-scratching UFO mystery, grab a tinfoil hat and take a look at these eerie airborne videos recently declassified by the U.S. government.
FNNinterviewed people on the streets, one of whom said, “It looks like a balloon but it’s totally not moving.” A representative from the Sendai District Meteorological Observatory said the object was not theirs, so they were unable to provide any details.
Floating at more than 3,000m above the ground for hours, the airborne mystery seems to have a cross-like equipment and rotating propellers below it.
Besides Miyagi, the mysterious object was also spotted in various other regions such as Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures. According to the UFO Fureai Museum in Fukushima, “it is difficult to say that is a UFO” as it does not have the sudden acceleration iconic to UFOs.
The object is rather similar to a radiosonde, which is a battery-powered weather monitoring equipment brought into the atmosphere by a white weather ballon. However, the Japan Meteorological Agency has denied that it was something they had released into the sky for monitoring or research purposes.
Based on aviation law, in order to fly a balloon or the likes, one has to submit a request to the vicinity’s airport office. But it seems that no application was submitted for this “unidentified flying object”.
The mysterious balloon-like object has reportedly floated out over the Pacific Ocean, but it’s left a country baffled as its origin and function remains undetermined.

No, we haven’t suddenly become a sightseeing hotspot for intergalactic aliens. More likely, it has something to do with new technology that may be mistaken for UFOs or spread conspiracy theories about aliens. Next time you see some conspiracy theorist post a video about the latest UFO sighting, keep these three things in mind.
These flying objects can easily be mistaken from the distance as alien spacecrafts touching down into our atmosphere. Back in the day, UFO sightings often turned out to be objects like weather balloons, satellites, meteorites, planets, airplanes, and weather anomalies.
But now, enter the drone. These flying mechanical objects zipping through the air may even be deliberately created to look like UFOs, causing unsuspecting viewers to mistake them for out-of-the-world machines. In 2014, some drone enthusiasts even organized a night to strap LED lights to drones and fly them to prank the public and get them to think they’re UFOs.
2. If there are no pics, did it really happen?
Back then, if you claimed to see a UFO, unless you had an expensive camera, there was really no way of verifying whether you saw one or not. But now that people are equipped with smartphone cameras, pictures of UFO sightings can quickly go viral on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, or anywhere else on the internet. What’s more, people can edit their photos digitally to make the UFO look more like an alien spacecraft — leading to more “UFO sightings.”
3. The internet.
With the internet, it’s easier to figure out how to report sightings. Just type “report UFO sighting” and the NUFORC’s website will pop up. Even if you don’t officially report it, as said before, it’s easy for photos and videos of your “UFO sighting” to go viral. There are conspiracy blogs and websites all over the internet about UFOs and aliens, like this one.
What’s more, countries like the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Scandinavian nations report more UFOs. It doesn’t necessarily mean aliens are visiting those countries more — it probably just means people have more access to the internet. The same goes for countries that report less UFO sightings — likely meaning less widespread internet access.

Several channels reporting that the ISS live feed captured a space laser battle between two UFOs. Despite the stunning footage it was a Department of Defense low earth orbit laser communications test which was caught on the ISS feed on June 17, 2020.
The Space Development Agency says optical inter-satellite links are "one of the most critical technologies to be demonstrated."
Optical communications terminals that use lasers to beam data across space will be tested in upcoming experiments by the Space Development Agency and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
These terminals are important pieces of DoD’s future low Earth orbit constellations which will require satellite-to-satellite optical crosslinks so data collected in space can be immediately sent to military command centers on the ground.
“Optical inter-satellite links are one of the most critical technologies required to be demonstrated for Tranche 0,” the Space Development Agency said in a request for proposals issued last month for its communications constellation known at the transport layer. Tranche 0 is the initial deployment planned for 2022.
The satellites in the transport layer have to pass data in space and down to the ground to military users with very low latency. That can’t happen “without the demonstration and maturation of optical inter-satellite crosslinks — with radio frequency (RF) crosslinks as a backup,” the SDA request says.
SDA wants to build one or more constellations of hundreds of satellites for communications and for missile tracking.

Bright orange lights in the sky – 9 in perfect triangular formation then vanished. I went to close my landing window, facing South onto my street, and saw 9 bright orange lights apparently flying in direction East and slightly hovering between (behind) the houses opposite, but quite far away, I think. It was approx 10.20 pm and they appeared to flying in a triangular formation, shaped a bit like a molecular structure, grouped in threes, some above; some below. There was no noise. I called my son ‘I think there are Ufos in the sky!’ and he managed to capture three of them on phone video by running down and outside (he is keen not to give identity on this site) They looked solid and disc shaped like an old spinning top. The sighting was very short – They disappeared one by one by zig zagging down or forward towards my position, and then vanished at super speed (like going into hyperspace) until the last one had gone. we posted the video, of seconds, online.

Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken are two of the first people to fly on a SpaceX rocket, a feat they achieved last month.
Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken are the only two people who know what it's like to fly on a SpaceX rocket. On Friday, the pair revealed some more details about how it feels, and why the Falcon 9's design changes things.
Hurley and Behnken flew on the first crewed flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon. The human-carrying capsule, designed to help NASA send astronauts to and from the International Space Station, was launched by a Falcon 9 rocket on May 30 from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A in Florida. It was a momentous occasion: after NASA's space shuttle program ended in 2011, the agency had to send astronauts to the station with the help of Russian agency Roscosmos. SpaceX's crewed flight helped kickstart a new era for NASA missions, one that brings these flights a little clsoer to home.
In an interview with Spaceflight Now, Hurley described the launch as feeling "totally different than shuttle,” adding that “it was smooth. It got a little rougher.” Hurley, who was in charge of launching, landing and recovery for the Crew Dragon mission, also flew on the space shuttle's final mission.
Behnken agreed, saying that he was "surprised a little bit at how smooth things were off the pad." He told the publication:
“The space shuttle was a pretty rough ride heading into orbit with the solid rocket boosters, and our expectation was, as we continued with the flight into second stage, that things would basically get a lot smoother than the space shuttle did. But Dragon was huffing and puffing all the way into orbit. It was not quite the same ride the smooth ride as the space shuttle was up to MECO (main engine cutoff). A little bit less Gs, but a little bit more alive is probably the best way I would describe it.”
The main difference, as noted by Hurley, is the propellant in use. The space shuttle used two solid rocket boosters (SRBs) for flight, designed to send the vehicle up to 150,000 feet. Each SRB booster weighs 1.3 million pounds, with a motor that uses 1.1 million pounds of propellant. These worked with the main engines, so the boosters provided the thrust for the first two minutes of flight before giving way to the hydrogen-powered main engines.

Using solid fuel, unlike liquid, makes it easier to store and makes the development process cheaper. But the New York Times noted that solid fuel burns more "like a giant firecracker," as opposed to the easier-to-control liquid fuel as used on the Falcon 9.
This is perhaps why the launch phase felt smoother to the pair. The nine Merlin engines that power the Falcon 9 use super-cool liquid oxygen and rocket propellant to provide 1.7 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.
Behnken and Hurley will likely be joined later this year in the exclusive SpaceX flyers' club. The first non-test mission, "Crew-1," will send up astronauts Victor Glover, Michael Hopkins and Shannon Walker from NASA. They will be joined by Soichi Noguchi from Japan's JAXA agency. The mission is expected to take place in the third quarter of 2020.
THE INVERSE ANALYSIS
The comments demonstrate how SpaceX's entry into the rocket race is changing how astronauts experience spaceflight. Beyond the fuel switch, the Crew Dragon also uses a more futuristic-looking array of touchscreens on the inside, as opposed to the dials and levers better associated with traditional spacecraft.
As SpaceX gears up to fly the Starship, there could be more changes on the way. That ship, with the ability to send up to 100 people into space at a time, is set to be complete with an entertainment area and internal cabins. In the future, spaceflight may no longer be limited to the confines of a tiny capsule.
How many friends do you have? We’re talking the “Can you take me to the airport?” kind, not Facebook friends. Finished counting? If you have 109, you can return the favor of taking you to the airport by taking them to Mars, where new research has determined that’s all the humans needed to start a survivable colony on another planet. Knowing that, do you want to change your list?
“Humanity could be threatened with extinction due to some cataclysmic event. As pointed out by Sagan, in this case, the only possible way to avoid the end of the world as we know it might be to settle another planet within a short period of time. But what is the feasibility of survival on another planet for a small group of humans?”
Professor Jean-Marc Salotti from France’s Bordeaux Institut National Polytechnique was inspired by Carl Sagan’s book, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space, and Elon Musk’s planto build a 100-person Mars spacecraft to investigate the minimum number of people needed to escape Armageddon to another planet and maintain the survival of the human race. In his paper published in Scientific Reports, Salotti starts by making the simple yet necessary assumption that the 110 people could do more than one task and share activities. In that case, if you’re choosing friends to take along, you’d want people who could help you move (a task involving lifting, carrying, placement, driving, navigation, climbing to name a few) rather than a friend who is only able to drive you to the airport.
Better take a farmer
“Providing that the initial state is viable, it is assumed that survival depends only on two important variables:
Available local resources. A local resource can be a gas, mineral or liquid present on the surface of the planet. It is available if its exploitation is possible to extract useful chemical elements. Specific chemical elements have to be found on the planet for survival (water, oxygen, etc.). They must exist as available local resources or they have to be produced from the exploitation of other local resources.
Production capacity. The production capacity is defined by the number of items (consumables, tools, …) that can be produced among the list of all items needed for survival for a given period of time. For a given number of settlers, the capacity has to reach an acceptable threshold allowing survival and development of the settlement.”
Assuming the planet has resources already there (not exactly the case on Mars, which is why Musk proposed to terraform it first) keeps the ship’s cargo manageable for a quick escape from Earth – just enough to build temporary structures to hold and house everyone until permanent buildings and infrastructure are completed, or at least usable – and, of course, to keep them fed until food van be gathered or grown.
Salotti defines five essential task to help you or the captain pick out the right friends to bring: ecosystem management (air, water, agriculture), energy production, industry (especially extracting minerals and manufacturing), building (construction and landlord) and social activities (health care, day care, education, entertainment, etc.). Time to update your friends list again and remember, everyone needs to multi-task.
Who’s bringing the weapons?
“The minimum number of settlers has been calculated and the result is 110 individuals. Other assumptions can be made. The proposed method allows assessments and comparisons, opening the debate for the best strategy for survival. If this relatively low number is confirmed, survival on another planet might be easier than expected, provided that the organization of the settlers is appropriate.”
Anticipating your surprise and probable disbelief that 110 people (especially out of your group of friends) is all that is needed to move humanity to Mars in an emergency, Salotti agrees it’s open for debate. He also reminds you that your pool of friends might not be the right pool for selecting an appropriate group of settlers.
One final thought … how many of your friends escaping Armageddon would select YOU?
May 2006 was the date on which a remarkable revelation of the UFO type surfaced. It demonstrated that the U.K.’s Ministry of Defense has a remarkable (and a secret) interest in ball lightning and plasmas – and potentially using them as weapons, no less. It was a revelation that made UFO researchers all across the world sit up and listen and look. For a number of years, it was disclosed, the U.K.’s Ministry of Defense had been secretly working on a UFO program. I must make it clear, however, that it wasn’t the kind of project that had dead aliens and crashed UFOs – as per Roswell – at its heart. In fact, it had zero to do with such things. Nevertheless, the disclosure was stunning, all the same. Between 1996 – when the operation began – and February 2000, when the project was completed, the MoD had been carefully and quietly investigating the UFO puzzle. The program’s official title was Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defense Region. Unofficially, it went by the far less lengthyname of Project Condign.
It was due to the U.K.’s Freedom of Information Act that the Report surfaced – and with thanks to the investigations of UFO researchers Dr. David Clarke and Gary Anthony. The pair worked hard to try and get the report released. That work eventually paid off. The 465-pages-long report was a fascinating one. Despite the fact that the MoD always maintained it had very little interest in UFOs, the sheer length and depth of the report showed that this was, at the very least, a misunderstanding. Or, at the other extreme, an outright lie. A great deal of focus was placed on the author of the report. His name remained hidden behind closed doors for quite a few years. But, nothing stays hidden forever. And that applies here. The elderly man was a Dr. Ron Haddow.
In 2006, Haddow wrote an adventure-driven novel titled No Weapon Forged. It was reviewed in that same year by John Nicholls, who was writing for Testimony Magazine. In part, Nicholls noted that Haddow “spent the early part of his life in the Royal Air Force, both in flying and in testing the first airborne digital equipment to enter RAF service. His work then changed to teaching radar, electronic warfare, air defense and guided weapons, with special reference to Middle East warfare.” Nicholls continued that Haddow, “continued in research and design of equipment, and later became a Senior Advisor to a NATO Industrial Advisory Group work on future defenses…” Without a doubt, that’s quite a body of work.
For years, the U.K. UFO research community sought to find out who it was that wrote Project Condign. A good friend of mine, Irene Bott, almost got to the heart of that mystery in the late 1990s. From 1996 to 2000, Irene ran the U.K.-based Staffordshire UFO Group. On one particular day while I was hanging out at Irene’s then-home, she put a call in to the Ministry of Defense. The purpose was to inquire about a UFO incident that she was looking into at the time. For reasons that still remain fully unclear to this day, Irene was transferred by the MoD operator who answered her call not to the MoD’s “UFO desk” that Nick Pope previously ran, but to none other than Ron Haddow. Documentation now in the public domain shows that Haddow and his colleagues were deeply concerned by this spectacular error. That Haddow actually spoke with Irene hardly impressed the Ministry of Defense, as the now-declassified documents on the Haddow-Bott conversation show. By all accounts, the whole thing caused a fair degree of concern within the MoD. And for Haddow, too. Just another day in the weird, intrigue-filled world of UFOs and government.
