The thing is that if the Universe is expanding (and it is), it means it was born from a much more compact state.

Like Rhode Island. And if it does have a beginning, it’s likely to come to an end too! But how exactly will it happen? By the way, does our Universe have an edge?

Alien Craft Encounter Over Indian Point Reactor In New York

JULY 24, 1984 ….INDIAN POINT REACTOR NEW YORK STATE

The threat of UFOs compromising reactor security, as if the nuclear industry didn’t have enough to deal with already, became a very real concern in 1984.

Although of- ficials won’t admit it, several researchers have information That New York’s Indian Point Reactor complex endured such a UFO problem during the long siege of sightings that happened throughout the state’s Hudson Valley area.

The portrayal of the event in this article is based primarily on the disclosures of unnamed sources.

The summer of 1984 was a troublesome season for authorities at the Indian Point nuclear reactor complex in Buchanan, New York.

Two UFO appearances, one of which was verified by Carl Patrick, director of nuclear information for the New York Power Authority (NYPA), and later documented by the press and the 1987 book Night Siege, apparently put the normally tight security of the plant to a severe test.

The first event entailed the brief flyover of a huge craft, witnessed by three security policemen on June 14.

That was followed ten days later by a UFO incident of unprecedented impact. It was one of hundreds of UFO sightings in the Hudson Valley, but one the nuclear workers won’t soon forget.

“Here comes that UFO again!” an Indian Point security guard is said to have yelled on the night of July 24, 1984, alerting other security personnel by way of the plant’s internal communications system.

A UFO, variously described as looking like “an ice cream cone” and “boomerang,” had lazily drifted over to Reactor #3-the only active reactor at the time-lingering about 300 feet above the domed construction for some ten minutes, sending security officials into an uproar.

Now, six years later, the principal UFO researcher on the case admits that many aspects of the event remain confusing and undisclosed. And although he’s still receiving information, Philip Imbrogno calls his own lengthy investigation “stagnant.”

“Every time new information comes up or I get a lead on something, I get very reluctant to deal with it again,” said Imbrogno, who heads the science department at the Windward School in White Plains, New York.

“The entire case has caused me quite a bit of pressure…

The event would indicate that whatever appeared over there, our state-of-the-art technology in defense was unable to deal with it.”

He suggests that from what his sources have said, a military aspect came into play. The Indian Point UFO represented an intolerable security breach. Military customers?

Imbrogno says that it is precisely that aspect which has had a lasting effect, and which has generated repercussions that continue to this day. But according to the New York Power Authority, which oversees the reactor complex, Indian Point itself has no direct military customers.

Reactor #3 primarily services local and state facilities in New York City and Westchester County, including local school districts, the New York City subway systems and some of New York’s trains.

Most importantly, in Imbrogno’s mind, are several military installations in and around Duchess County, which allegedly get their power from Indian Point.

According to his sources, these are primarily satellite receiving stations, and “a number of other military operations of which we can only guess,” Imbrogno says.

The official agency overseeing the reactor complex is the New York Power Authority, although Consolidated Edison has jurisdiction over Reactor #2 and is sold use of #3 for extensive transmissions to New York residential users and, perhaps, military facilities such as Camp Smith, an Air National Guard base located north of Peekskill. (Reactor #l is inactive.)

It was NYPA whose officials apparently spent considerable human energy trying to dissuade Imbrogno from writing about the July 24 event, concerned he would release information vital to the plant’s security.

“I think other agencies were using (the NYPA) to harass me,” he said, noting that he was constantly subjected to their repetitive phone calls, threatening that he would be forced to appear at a hearing on the incident.

(He was never subpoenaed, but Imbrogno subsequently, and perhaps coincidentally, was audited by the IRS four times.)

The compulsion to publish was undeniable; of what may have been as many as 70 UFO witnesses among Indian Point personnel, a number quietly sought out Imbrogno, and on the condition of anonymity provided him with the vital facts which led to the production of Night Siege (co-written with Bob Pratt and J. Allen Hynek.)

“My sources involve people who work in security for the plant and also people in secretarial and janitorial positions,” he said.

“The only problem is that getting anything on paper- documentation, something official-is very, very hard, I have unofficial confirmation right now that a number of documents pertaining to the sighting do exist at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.”

Normally, NRC records can be opened to the public under terms of the Freedom of Information Act, but when he in- quired, Imbrogno was informed that the documents were being held at the reactor complex, and as such were protected under national security regulations.

“It’s a joint sort of thing,” he said, “In other words, although the NRC is pretty open to the public, if they want to keep a document classified, they’ll store it with another agency. I have an inside secretarial source who’s actually seen the documents filed.”

The NYPA’s Patrick denies that any such documentation exists, and dismisses the incident by claiming that all Hudson Valley UFO sightings were later identified as light aircraft.

There was no videotape taken by on-site surveillance cameras, Patrick insists, or audio recording of oral communications, both pieces of evidence which Imbrogno strongly feels do exist and are being retained somewhere.

According to Imbrogno’s sources, a security shake-up ensued the very next day. “A number of agencies came in, including the NRC and military personnel, and they supposedly cleaned out everything. You have to remember that with nuclear reactors, you’re only going to get 10 percent of the real story.

They’re overly terrified of bad publicity, and are really afraid of the anti-nuclear groups, which can cause trouble. Anything that happens is immediately covered up, including UFO sightings.”

An ‘irregularity’

Imbrogno further alleges that shortly after the UFO infringement, a crack in the reactor’s casing was discovered. The public didn’t hear about such a situation until a year later; the NYPA’s Patrick denied any “crack,” although he did recall a time when Reactor #2 may have developed an “irregularity.”

Imbrogno says, “[Indian Point officials] made a public statement that operations were not affected, that everything was normal. But I’ve been told by several people that they lost power, the security system dropped, and the reactor controls went crazy. Apparently it was caused by the UFO.”

No way, says the NYPA.

“Any implication that the sightings of these [light aircraft] in any way affected Reactor #3 is false”, Patrick said. Imbrogno’s sources indicate otherwise. Supposedly, a mass of sophisticated, high-accuracy tracking equipment was installed at the complex, enabling security to quickly generate a computer image of whatever aircraft might be affecting the equipment.

Apparently such problems are still going on. Patrick would not comment on what kinds of security equipment protect Indian Point, but stressed that nothing new has been installed since the incident.

Imbrogno is also suspicious that the armed security forces at the site may have had reason to attempt firing on the craft, again an allegation flatly refuted by the NYPA.

“I know a number of helicopters with rocket launchers were sent up and followed the craft for some distance,” Imbrogno commented, citing his anonymous sources for the info.

“When these helicopters went on their way, the object moved off and started crossing the Hudson, and disappeared up north.”

Officials will not talk to Imbrogno, nor answer his letters, he says. UFO spoke with Cliff Spieler, vice president at the New York Power Authority. He, like Patrick, basically dismisses the entire affair.

“Having looked into this thing and living two miles from Indian Point, think the UFO reports are nonsense,” he said.

“All Hudson Valley UFO sightings] are linked to small planes flying out of Duchess County.”

At one time, officials speaking for Indian Point made their position quite clear to Imbrogno, “They said, ‘you can cooperate with us, or you don’t have to cooperate with us.

If you don’t cooperate with us, you have to face the consequences, because you are dealing in an area of national security. The incident that took place over there involved national security because it was a breach of security at a nuclear reactor.’ But they weren’t ready to say who was breaching security!”

In considering the “who,” Imbrogno took in a number of hypotheses, including the possibility that the incident was an elaborate test flight of a secret military craft, such as the B-2 Stealth bomber, or a covertly-planned contingency test of the plant’s security operations, carried out under the guise of a UFO overflight.

Nothing is impossible, he’ll admit. But the most tenable answer, he feels, is that the UFO was an extraterrestrial craft. “I don’t think our government could be so bold with a craft of the kind that appeared at Indian Point,” he said.

“Talking to these security people, and looking into their eyes,” his voice trailed,” . . . they tell a story of this one cop who got up on the roof below the UFO, and the thing started moving a little bit. He pulled out his gun, looked at it, then put the gun back in his holster and ducked!

The people who were telling these stories are not familiar with the UFO literature. If I really wanted to go into this, with no fear of what would happen to me, I’m sure there’s an incredible story here.

I am still being given information about certain things going on there-In the nighttime, people seeing little creatures coming through the walls of the casing on the reactor, and military personnel indicating ‘we’re aware of these creatures and we don’t care if they’re from outer space-shoot ’em!’

On a newscast on Channel 7 in New York, they were interviewing one guy, and he said, ‘I saw it going over the reactor! I think they’re sucking the power from it! That’s what they’re doing!’ But a civilization that has this type of vehicle- any intelligence, whatever it is-I’m sure doesn’t need nuclear energy.”

Editor’s Note: In a letter to UFO Magazine shortly after this article was written, Imbrogno added to his remarks.

“It is hard to believe that people like John Lear and Bill Cooper are revealing ‘top secret’ information with little or no repercussions.

I just poked my nose a little too deep into an area of national security and got my ears pinned back for it. My next step is to approach this in a legal way by asking for an investigation (preferably by a member of Congress) to find out how and why the security at this government reactor was violated and why information is being withheld.”

Patterns Formed by Spiral Galaxies Show Universe May Have A Defined Structure, And That The Early Universe could Have Been Spinning

An analysis of more than 200,000 spiral galaxies has revealed unexpected links between spin directions of galaxies, and the structure formed by these links might suggest that the early universe could have been spinning, according to a Kansas State University study.

Lior Shamir, a K-State computational astronomer and computer scientist, presented the findings at the 236th American Astronomical Society meeting in June 2020. The findings are significant because the observations conflict with some previous assumptions about the large-scale structure of the universe.

Since the time of Edwin Hubble, astronomers have believed that the universe is inflating with no particular direction and that the galaxies in it are distributed with no particular cosmological structure. But Shamir’s recent observations of geometrical patterns of more than 200,000 spiral galaxies suggest that the universe could have a defined structure and that the early universe could have been spinning. Patterns in the distribution of these galaxies suggest that spiral galaxies in different parts of the universe, separated by both space and time, are related through the directions toward which they spin, according to the study.

“Data science in astronomy has not just made astronomy research more cost-effective, but it also allows us to observe the universe in a completely different way,” said Shamir, also a K-State associate professor of computer science. “The geometrical pattern exhibited by the distribution of the spiral galaxies is clear, but can only be observed when analyzing a very large number of astronomical objects.”

A spiral galaxy is a unique astronomical object because its visual appearance depends on the observer’s perspective. For instance, a spiral galaxy that spins clockwise when observed from Earth, would seem to spin counterclockwise when the observer is located in the opposite side of that galaxy. If the universe is isotropic and has no particular structure — as previous astronomers have predicted — the number of galaxies that spin clockwise would be roughly equal to the number of galaxies that spin counterclockwise. Shamir used data from modern telescopes to show that this is not the case.

With traditional telescopes, counting galaxies in the universe is a daunting task. But modern robotic telescopes such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, or SDSS, and the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, or Pan-STARRS, are able to image many millions of galaxies automatically as they survey the sky. Machine vision can then sort millions of galaxies by their spin direction far faster than any person or group of people.

When comparing the number of galaxies with different spin directions, the number of galaxies that spin clockwise is not equal to the number of galaxies that spin counterclockwise. The difference is small, just over 2%, but with the high number of galaxies, there is a probability of less than 1 to 4 billion to have such asymmetry by chance, according to Shamir’s research.

The patterns span over more than 4 billion light-years, but the asymmetry in that range is not uniform. The study found that the asymmetry gets higher when the galaxies are more distant from Earth, which shows that the early universe was more consistent and less chaotic than the current universe.

But the patterns do not just show that the universe is not symmetric, but also that the asymmetry changes in different parts of the universe, and the differences exhibit a unique pattern of multipoles.

“If the universe has an axis, it is not a simple single axis like a merry-go-round,” Shamir said. “It is a complex alignment of multiple axes that also have a certain drift.”

The concept of cosmological multipoles is not new. Previous space-based observatories — such as the Cosmic Background Explorer, or COBE, satellite; the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, or WMAP mission; and the Planck observatory — showed that the cosmic microwave background, which is electromagnetic radiation from the very early universe, also exhibits multiple poles. But the measurement of the cosmic microwave background is sensitive to foreground contamination — such as the obstruction of the Milky Way — and cannot show how these poles changed over time. The asymmetry between spin directions of spiral galaxies is a measurement that is not sensitive to obstruction. What can obstruct galaxies spinning in one direction in a certain field will necessarily also obstruct galaxies spinning in the opposite way.

“There is no error or contamination that could exhibit itself through such unique, complex and consistent patterns,” Shamir said. “We have two different sky surveys showing the exact same patterns, even when the galaxies are completely different. There is no error that can lead to that. This is the universe that we live in. This is our home.”

Hey everyone, I found a black dome structure on the moon today. The dome looks tinted and dark with nine small back circles on its outer edge and a bright white reflection on its top. In the video I compare the appearance of this dome with some rocky craters nearby so that you can see the detail and the difference. I did add a little contrast to it to make it stand out, and stand out it does. 

It seems obvious to me that NASA is going out of their way not to report such discoveries to the public. Its a shame really. This kind of news would really excite a lot of astronomers and cause them to awaken into a new reality. Much like Covid-19 did to the people in each country as it spread...because the public once believed that such a pandemic would be impossible...and yet, the human race has changed their perspective on that very fast. Thats how disclosure of intelligent aliens would be...but it would not kill people or frighten them as much.

The Earth's magnetic fields, upon which the planet depends to defend itself from solar flares, appear to be weakening. Astrophysicist Juan Soler joins Rick Sanchez to discuss the troubling news in the following video.

New data from Europe's Swarm satellites show something strange is afoot in Earth's magnetic field. The South Atlantic Anomaly might be splitting in two. "A new, eastern minimum of the South Atlantic Anomaly has appeared over the last decade," says Jürgen Matzka, from the German Research Center for Geosciences. "In recent years it has been developing vigorously."

The South Atlantic Anomaly is a weak spot in Earth's magnetic field centered roughly on the Atlantic side of South America. Discovered in 1958, it has been growing and shifting for decades. The latest data from Swarm show a new weak spot forming just off the southern tip of Africa.

"We are very lucky to have the Swarm satellites in orbit to investigate this development," says Matzka.

According to spaceweather, launched in November 2013, Swarm is a constellation of 3 identical satellites flying in formation around Earth. They are equipped with magnetometers, star trackers and other instruments, which allow the satellites to make exquisitely detailed 3D measurements of Earth's magnetic field. The possible splitting of the Anomaly is just one of the mission's many significant findings.

Researchers have long known that Earth's magnetic field is weakening. Over the last 200 years, the globally averaged magnetic field has lost around 9% of its strength, with the South Atlantic Anomaly leading the way. From 1970 to 2020, the minimum.

As the South Atlantic Anomaly has weakened, the inner Van Allen Belt has spilled into it, allowing energetic particles (especially protons) to get within 200 km of Earth's surface. This poses little threat to people on the ground, but spacecraft aren't so lucky. 

When satellites fly through the Anomaly, they are exposed to relatively strong radiation. Onboard computers may reboot and digital cameras can be fogged by streaks of charged particles flying through them. The ISS has extra shielding to deal with this problem, and the Hubble Space Telescope doesn't even bother to make observations when it is inside the Anomaly.

If the South Atlantic Anomaly eventually splits into two cells, satellite mission planners will have to contend with a new zone of high radiation. The splitting is more than just a nuisance, however. It could offer clues to the origin of the Anomaly itself. Earth's magnetic field is created by currents of superheated liquid iron swirling ~3000 km beneath our feet. Changes "up here" can tell researchers what's going on "down there."

2 triangle-shaped UFOs over Rio Rancho, New Mexico

The sightings of oddly shapes objects floating in the skies is ever increasing. In a yet another sighting recorded from New Mexico, two strips of triangularly organised lights was seen flying across the skies in the twilight hours. All the lights seemed to form a part of the same big single spaceship (UFO) as all tue lights moved in perfect synchronicity. The front and the rear streak of lights each consisted of 4 different light sources arranged in such a pattern as to form an arrow end. Some viewers surmised that the object could have been an air plane but no known air plane on earth features the triangularly oriented lighting designs and plus the object was too close to the surface and emitting too low sound to be successfully considered an aircraft. The UFO, as can be seen in the video, was travelling toward the direction of tue desert, maybe it was trying to locate a safe position to land for spending the night, and what can be better than a secluded desert dune in the prodigious darkness of the moonless night.

I was looking in the old Apollo 15 mission photos when I came across this huge structure. The building is about half a km long and looks like a recently used base. I say recently used because the other structures near it are 90% covered in a thick layer of moon dust. The other structures are also white, but only a faint outline is visible of them. I can make out about ten other semi visible structures in these photos, but it does take a lot of experience to get your eyes use to focusing on the right details. I often only point out the highest detailed structures to insure the readers can also see it, but today I will circle the others to show you a bit more. 

This is proof that NASA has a secret goal for the Apollo missions...to map out alien structures and possible locations of alien tech retrieval sites.

This is a great capture of a UFO flying past the Dragon SpaceX capsule while it was about to dock at the space station. This UFO passed in front of the spacex capsule, so we know its small, like an alien drone monitoring history being made. 

 

Its strange that neither NASA or SpaceX mentions what this strange glowing object is since it came within a few meters of the capsule carrying two astronauts. You would think anything that close would be seen as a possible threat to the lives of the astronauts, but nothing was said. 

100% proof that alien life exists out there.

Richard and Tracey Dolan discuss the incredible landing of a UFO in Valensole, France in 1965, witnessed by former French Resistance fighter Maurice Masse. An extraordinary case involving the sighting of two short, large headed alien beings. 

Near the French village of Valensole, farmer Maurice Masse was smoking a cigarette just before starting work at 5:45 A.M. on July 1, 1965, when an object came out of the sky and landed in a lavender field 200 feet away. 

Annoyed and assuming that a helicopter had made an unauthorized landing, he walked toward it. However, he soon saw it was no helicopter but an oval-shaped structure resting on four legs. In front of it stood two figures, not quite four feet tall, dressed in tight gray-green clothes. 

Their heads were oversize and with sharp chins, their eyes were large and slanted, and they were making a "grumbling" noise.

One of the beings reportedly pointed a pencil-like device at Masse, paralyzing him in his tracks. The figures entered the UFO and flew away, and the witness needed 20 minutes to recover his mobility. 

In its wake the object left a deep hole and a moist area that soon hardened like concrete. Plants in the vicinity decayed, and analysis found a higher amount of calcium at the landing site than elsewhere.

UFOs shooting each other over New Mexico?

This UFO video was filmed back in October 2019 but it was just today uploaded to MUFON’s website. This strange event happened over Carrales, a village in Sandoval County, New Mexico.

Witness report:

 “Orbs shooting at each other. I saw 4 to 5 orbs stationary for a minute or so before I began to film. The orbs stayed stationary and then would fade in and out they also appeared to shoot something at each other.”

Archaeologists in Luzon Island have turned up the bones of a distantly related species, Homo luzonensis, further expanding the human family tree.

In a cave in the Philippines, scientists have discovered a new branch of the human family tree.

At least 50,000 years ago, an extinct human species lived on what is now the island of Luzon, researchers reported on Wednesday. It’s possible that Homo luzonensis, as they’re calling the species, stood less than three feet tall.

The discovery adds growing complexity to the story of human evolution. It was not a simple march forward, as it once seemed. Instead, our lineage assumed an exuberant burst of strange forms along the way.

Our species, Homo sapiens, now inhabits a comparatively lonely world.

“The more fossils that people pull out of the ground, the more we realize that the variation that was present in the past far exceeds what we see in us today,” said Matthew Tocheri, a paleoanthropologist at Lakehead University in Canada, who was not involved in the new discovery.

In the early 2000s, Armand Salvador Mijares, a graduate student at the University of the Philippines, was digging at Callao Cave, on Luzon, for traces of the first farmers on the Philippines. Soon, he decided to dig a little deeper.

Researchers on the Indonesian island of Flores had discovered the bones of an extraordinary humanlike species about 60,000 years old. The scientists named it Homo floresiensis.

Some features were similar to ours, but in other ways Homo floresiensis more closely resembled other hominins (the term scientists use for modern humans and other species in our lineage).

Homo floresiensis was able to make stone tools, for example. But the adults stood only three feet high and had tiny brains. This strange combination led to debates about who, exactly, were their ancestors.

The oldest fossils of hominins, dating back over six million years, have all been found in Africa. For millions of years, hominins were short, small-brained, bipedal apes.

Starting about 2.5 million years ago, one lineage of African hominins began to evolve new traits — a flatter face, bigger brains and a taller body, among other features. These hominins were the first known members of our own genus, Homo.

Only later, about 1.8 million years ago, do the first fossils of Homo appear outside of Africa. One common species was Homo erectus, a species that spread to East and Southeast Asia. The youngest Homo erectus fossils, discovered in Indonesia, may be just 143,000 years old.

Our own lineage kept evolving in Africa. Homo sapiens emerged about 300,000 years ago, and only 100,000 years ago did we start leaving the continent. By 50,000 years ago, our species had reached Australia. (Some researchers believe that date should be pushed back to 65,000 years ago.)

One hypothesis, then, is that Homo floresiensis evolved from Homo erectus. So here was the question for Philippine archaeologists: Could hominins have reached Luzon as well as Flores?

“That inspired me to go back and go deep,” Dr. Mijares, now a professor at the University of the Philippines, said in an interview.

In 2007, he returned to Callao Cave. As his team dug into the cave floor, the researchers hit a layer of bones. At first, Dr. Mijares was disappointed by the fossils, which mostly belonged to deer and other mammals.

But when Philip Piper, an archaeologist at the University of the Philippines, later sorted through the finds, he noticed one that resembled a human foot bone. It was small, Dr. Mijares said, “and there was something weird about it.” But not much more could be learned from a single bone.

In 2011, on another dig, he and his colleagues found more humanlike fossils, including teeth, part of a femur and hand bones. In 2015, they found two more molars, which they dated to at least 50,000 years ago.

All told, the fossils came from three individuals. And they were remarkable.

The teeth had a peculiar shape. Some of the front teeth had three roots, for example, whereas those of our species usually only have just one. And the teeth were tiny.

“These adult teeth are smaller than any hominin known,” said Debbie Argue, a paleoanthropologist at Australian National University who was not involved in the new study.

“Could it be that these teeth belonged to adults that were even smaller than Homo floresiensis?” she wondered.

The researchers didn’t find enough bones to estimate how tall Homo luzonensis stood. But they do display their own strange mix of traits. One toe bone, for example, looks nearly identical to those of early hominins living in Africa more than three million years ago.

“The combination of features is like nothing we have seen before,” said María Martinón-Torres, the director of Spain’s National Research Center on Human Evolution, who was not involved in the new study.

Taken together, Dr. Mijares and his colleagues concluded, the evidence pointed to a new species of Homo.

Drawing such a conclusion from a few bones is risky, acknowledged Huw Groucutt, a paleoanthropologist at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology.

Nevertheless, “I think the argument for a new species does look pretty convincing in this case,” he said.

Homo erectus may have been the ancestor of the tiny hominins on both Flores and Luzon — perhaps swept to the islands by storms, clinging to trees. It may even be possible that Homo luzonensis descended from hominins that came to Luzon hundreds of thousands of years earlier.

Last year, another team of scientists digging in a different cave on Luzon found the bones of a butchered rhinoceros. Near those remains, they also discovered stone tools dating back 700,000 years.

At the very least, the two studies indicate there were hominins on Luzon 700,000 years ago and 50,000 years ago. The question now is whether they belonged to the same population.

“I think it’s likely the same lineage,” said Gert van den Bergh, an archaeologist at the University of Wollongong in Australia and co-author of last year’s study. Over the next several hundred thousand years, he speculated, Homo erectus shrank as it adapted to life on Luzon.

Dr. Tocheri disagreed with that interpretation.

“I don’t really buy into the idea that it’s island-dwarfed Homo erectus,” he said. Instead, he suggests, the tiny island hominins had tiny ancestors — perhaps small hominins in Africa that expanded to Asia and wound up on Flores and Luzon, taking refuge from bigger hominins.

“But it begs the question,” Dr. Tocheri added. “If we’re finding these things way over there, there’s got to be a record of them all the way across the continent leading back to Africa.”

Sorting through these possibilities will demand more fossils of Homo luzonensis — and perhaps fossils from some of the many islands off the coast of Southeast Asia.

“I see it as an amazing opportunity to see several parallel experiments in human evolution on these islands,” Dr. van den Bergh said.

SPACEX AND NASA HAVE DONE IT! A CREWED MISSION HAS SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED FROM U.S. SOIL

At precisely 3:22 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2020, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule — with astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley inside — took off from NASA’s historic Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A, bound for the International Space Station.

While the two astronauts are bringing important scientific experiments to the ISS, the most important piece of cargo was themselves.

As the first astronauts to fly into space through a private company’s rockets, they mark a new era for spaceflight with this mission, known as Demo-2. The launch marked the end of a nine-year period in which the US had to rely on Russia to send astronauts to space and back.

The launch on Saturday was the second attempt at history; a Wednesday effort was scrubbed due to poor weather in Florida.

Astronauts Behnken and Hurley began their 19-hour journey to the ISS.

As they continued skyward, the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket returned to Earth to land on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You, which is floating about 90 miles off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean.

While the live feed of the first stage of the rocket approaching the droneship cut out, when the shot returned, it showed the first stage of the rocket standing upright on the droneship, a perfect landing. (This hasn't always been the case):

"It is absolutely our honor to be part of this huge effort to get the United States back in the launch business. We'll talk to you from orbit," said NASA astronaut Doug Hurley a few minutes before launch. A few minutes later, they were traveling at more than 5,600 miles per hour toward the ISS.

At 3:35 p.m., the Crew Dragon capsule separated from the second stage of the Falcon 9 on its way to ISS. It would be powered by 12 Draco rocket thrusters for the rest of the journey:

THE MISSION HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING for both NASA and SpaceX. Neither the government nor the company wanted to pass up the moment. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk were side-by-side during interviews leading up to the launch, each expressing their excitement for the public-private partnership and what it could mean for the future of space exploration.

"We want to inspire kids to say that one day, they want to wear that uniform, that spacesuit" Musk said. “What today is about is reigniting the dream of space, and getting people fired up about the future. It’s one of those things—everyone from all walks of life, from all parts of the political spectrum, in the United States and elsewhere, should be really excited that this is a thing made by humans, for humans.”

The excitement from NASA was similar. “We need a new generation of Elon Musks,” Bridenstine said. “I think we’re going to see these models of doing business with public-private partnerships apply not just to low Earth orbit, which is what we’re doing today, but we’re taking this model onto the Moon, and even to Mars.” Demo-2 kicks off NASA's Commercial Crew Program, which will send astronauts into space through partnerships with SpaceX and Boeing, whose Starliner capsule launch date is currently unclear.

Streaming viewers heard astronauts call out to “SpaceX,” as opposed to the more familiar “Houston” of past launches.

The pomp that would normally come with a historic launch was also somewhat dampened, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Although Benkhen and Hurley nodded to Musk’s several companies by taking Tesla Model X cars to the runway, many SpaceX engineers who have spent years working towards this moment were unable to attend.

INTERNATIONAL IMPLICATIONS — That SpaceX is an American company was made loud and clear throughout the runup to the launch. #LaunchAmerica was the hashtag of the week, which hammered home the international implications of the launch. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the revamped Russian space program, Roscosmos, has enjoyed a strong relationship with NASA.

It’s a relationship between political adversaries that has held steady even at moments of great tension. It’s also a relationship that has earned Russia millions of dollars — a seat on a Russian Soyuz rocket costs $90 million — and one the United States believes could be done with greater cost efficiency and in-country.

It’s a consideration that Musk could appreciate. His decision to build SpaceX rockets in America came in 2001, after he tried to buy Russian rockets but balked at the price tag.

In the future, NASA hopes to maintain its rocket diplomacy by trading seats with Russia.

"If we don't launch on their rockets and they don't launch on our rockets, we could end up in a situation where the only people on the space station would be Americans or the only people on the space station would be Russian," Bridenstine told news site Axios earlier this year.

On Saturday after the launch, Bridenstine gushed, "we have done it." President Donald Trump flew to Florida on Air Force One to witness the launch. President Trump became the first sitting president to watch a space launch live since Bill Clinton.
