Seth Shostak, SETI senior astronomer, tells PopMech why it's no surprise our search for alien life has so far come up empty—and why, if there really is intelligent life out there, we'll find it within the next few decades.

Question : Over the past 50 years, several SETI projects have scoured the cosmos but have yet to turn up anything conclusive. What do you make of this cosmic radio-silence?
Answer :A lot of people do think of and refer to this as a silence, but I certainly don't. Because of the limitations in equipment and money, we've carefully explored very little of the sky. Yes, the first SETI experiment was done more than a half century ago, but you probably have to look at a few million star systems at very high sensitivity before you score a success. We haven't carefully examined anywhere near that number—a few thousand at most.
The thing to keep in mind is that we're still in the very early days when it comes to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Saying there's a silence is a bit like if Columbus, looking to discover a new continent, only sailed 10 miles off the coast of Spain before turning back to say, "Nothing out there! I guess that whole exploration gig isn't going to work out."
Question : Still, you've said before that we'll likely find some evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence within the next two decades. What makes you so confident?
Answer: If you're trying to determine when we're going to succeed with SETI, that really depends on only two questions. First, how many societies are out there broadcasting signals strong enough for you to find? And second, how quickly are you examining these star systems to find them?
My guess that we'll succeed in the next two decades is based on the fact that with improvements in digital electronics and computers—which are getting better and cheaper, following Moore's law—we will be continually sifting through the sky faster. And you can extrapolate how fast we'll be able to search, assuming we have the money, in the next decade or two.
As for the number of civilizations out there—how many needles are we looking for in this haystack—now that we don't know. But there are certainly thoughtful guesses, including those made by people like Frank Drake and Carl Sagan. And if you just look at the range of guesses, then this is where I've come to the conclusion that, if this experiment is well founded, if the ideas of SETI are legitimate in the sense that they make sense and this is realistic, then it's going to succeed rather quickly if it's going to succeed at all.
Question : What exactly are we looking for?
Answer : A lot of people assume we're looking for complex patterns in radio signals, like the value of pi, a list of prime numbers, or the Fibonacci [sequence]. But what we're really looking for is just any radio signal that some sort of transmitter could have made—one that's restricted to a very narrow band of frequencies. This is because the cosmos makes a lot of radio waves and other noise, but those are all over the dial, which is a sign of bad engineering, because you're wasting a lot of energy. We're looking for something that is, so to speak, carefully manicured.
Now there are also other SETI experiments looking for other types of signals beyond those made of radio waves, particularly very short flashes of visible light. That makes sense because light and radio both cost more or less the same amount of energy per bit of information when you're sending a signal.
Admittedly, these are not the only way to do SETI. You could also just build a number of very large telescopes to look for signs of astroengineering. That would be expensive and very difficult, but perfectly legitimate. I also get emails all the time from people saying that we should be looking for gravity waves, or using neutrino detectors, and lots of other ideas. But it seems to me—because of the cost and the fact that we know it works—looking for radio signals and other electromagnetic communication is the way to go.
Question : Last week NASA practically doubled the number of known exoplanets. Will this affect where we search through the cosmos?
Answer :Oh yes, and I think that the biggest change is this. In the past, people spent a lot of time putting together lists of star systems they thought were the best candidates to search for signals. And those were systems that had stars like the sun, and stars that weren't too young. But now we're learning that you can pretty much forget those lists, because essentially all stars have planets. And in terms of which ones have planets that are hospitable for life, we still don't know exactly, but it's beginning to look like a fairly high percentage. The preliminary numbers are somewhere between 10 and 30 percent.
Question : It takes time for light to travel, so looking out into space is also looking back in time. Won't any intelligence or civilization we discover be ancient or even long gone?
Answer :Well, it kind of doesn't matter. I studied Latin in high school, and I was reading stuff from Cicero. And that signal took a few thousand years to get to me. But I was still interested in what he had to say. Also, keep in mind that if there are a lot of intelligent societies out there right now, tens or hundreds of thousands, then the nearest ones could be just a couple hundred light-years away. Of course, even that distance means you're not going to get into conversation.
Question : What if we do find a signal? What happens?
Answer : A lot of people in this country assume that it'd be kept quiet, because "the public couldn't handle it," or something like that. And we know that's wrong, because the media has been all over every false alarm we've ever had.
What would we learn? Well, in the beginning, maybe not much. If you're getting information from a society that's more advanced than ours—and they might be much more advanced than ours—it strikes me as uncertain that we might ever really understand anything. Actually comprehending the message could be hard, and we might never figure it out.
But forget the message. Just knowing that there's somebody else out there—that what's happened on this planet has also happened in many other places—that might change our lives in a very subtle way, but it's interesting to know and worth looking for.

It appears that fewer aliens took vacations last year, as Canadians reported nearly 1,200 UFO sightings in 2013– well below the record-breaking total of the previous year, according to a new report.
In its annual report, released Tuesday, a Winnipeg group called Ufology Research said there were about three reported sightings of unidentified flying objects each day across the country last year, for a total of 1,180.
More than 40 per cent of the sightings were in Ontario, with the typical sighting lasting about 13 minutes, the report said. British Columbia was second with 25 per cent of the total recorded sightings.
In more than half of the recorded UFO sightings, witnesses reported “simple lights in the sky,” while others reported spheres and boomerangs.
“Results of this study show that many people continue to report unusual objects in the sky, and some of these objects do not have obvious explanations,” the report said. “Many witnesses are pilots, police and other individuals with reasonably good observing capabilities and good judgment.”
The group has been releasing annual reports on recorded UFO sightings in Canada for 25 years.
While the 2013 total is the second-highest ever recorded, it was well-short of the nearly 2,000 sightings on the books from 2012. That year, the 1,981 UFO reported sightings shattered the previous record of 1,004, which was set in 2008.
While it’s fun to speculate what made aliensseemingly stay home last year (rising fuel prices hitting the spaceship sector hard? the Polar Vortex making intergalactic space travel difficult?), the group suspects the big 2012 was “an anomaly and likely due to many people excited about the so-called ‘end of the world’ in 2012, according to the Mayan Calendar.”
The report notes, however, that despite last year’s drop-off, the number of reported sightings remains high.
Several theories for this can be suggested, the report notes, including:
That more UFOs are present and physically observable by witnesses;
More secret or classified military exercises and overflights are occurring over populated areas;
More people are unaware of the nature of conventional or natural objects in the sky;
More people are taking the time to observe their surroundings;
More people are able to report their sightings with easier access to the Internet and portable technology;
The downturn in the economy is leading to an increased desire by some people to look skyward for assistance.
The Filer Research Institute feels the scientific study of UFOs is for the benefit of humankind and is an important endeavor.

The purpose of these files is to report the UFO eyewitness and photo/video evidence that occurs on a daily basis around the world and in space. These Files assume that extraterrestrial intelligent life not only exists, but my hypothesis is that the over a thousand UFOs reported each month represent technologically advanced spacecraft conducting surveillance of Earth. I personally became interested in UFOs when London Control ordered me to intercept one over England while flying for the US Air Force. Under Project Blue Book, the US Air Force investigated UFOs for more than twenty years; and we continue this research.
I believe the God of the universe has spread life throughout the cosmos and UFO's are visiting us in ever-increasing numbers.

The history of the UFO phenomenon, going back to Biblical times, is essentially a record of human testimony of lights, objects, or events that cover the spectrum from the unusual to the high strangeness of close encounters. No doubt the same can be said of paranormal phenomena. This record has its share of charlatans, those who are mistaken, and perhaps those who have been deceived by others—or even by themselves. But the fascinating feature of Ufology is the core of honest, intelligent people in different eras and from all over the world, including many who are scientifically or aeronautically trained, who describe very similar objects or similar experiences of high strangeness which on any basis cannot be the product of a “black” research program.

Interacting With Angels
In the latter half, professional Angelologist and international author, Chantel Lysette, detailed her interaction with the archangels and explained the nature of the divine realm as well as how heavenly beings manifest here on Earth to offer guidance. She traced her relationship with divine forces back to childhood, when she would receive guidance from unseen voices that protected her from harm. Later in life, she recalled, her spirit guide introduced her to the archangels which led her to "work with God's messengers." According to Lysette, as she spent more time with the archangels, these beings became more human to her and she saw their specific personalities on display. To that end, she shared the story of being on a flight and listening to the angels bicker about who was best at keeping the plane in the air.
Lysette marveled that the process of summoning an angel for help is much simpler than we have been led to believe. She revealed that merely asking, in a straight forward fashion, for assistance from the angels will draw their attention. "All you have to do is, with an earnest heart, ask the angels to come into your life," she said, "and if you are serious about it, they will come." Lysette emphasized that the angels expect a person to make changes in their life that will further their own spiritual growth. She also differentiated between angels and archangels, noting that the former are tasked with specifically interacting with humans while the latter are "more like helpers," who carry out tasks in heaven. Janet Smith, Ph.D. writes, “ Kudos, George, this is a very important message. I’ve been blogging about this topic since 2010, called Eternal Gateways. www.janetkatherinesmith.blogspot.com. By the way, I know several people who have seen angels and I’ve read many a tale about it. They don’t look like aliens. People say some have wings, some don’t. They seem to be gender neutral, but more male than female. Sometimes caring departed relatives do the angel work. Since demons are fallen angels, of course they can do many things that angels can do, but they aren’t angels, and neither are aliens. Angels always quickly acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord.
“Mary” of Vance Davis’s story hesitated when asked if she acknowledged Jesus Christ as Lord. She dodged by saying she was loyal to the Father (or some such dodge). The six young intelligence agents let it pass. They shouldn’t have. I recall that one abductee asked a gray if they believed in God. It answered, “He’s the same to us as He is to you.” So, if you’re an atheist, we are, too. We can be whatever appeals to you. But they won’t acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord of the Kingdom of God and is the Son of God, Redeemer of the world. Or they may say that, “He is Lord, but they can’t say that he is MY Lord.

Drug DMT Can Bring on Alien Encounters
Harv Howard writes, “It seems like this topic has interested you more than most. I don’t blame you for the interest. MUFON at its core was slow in accepting abductee cases such as my own and slower still in moving even further along the path. From your column this month, I get the impression that you have not moved too far from the older works stipulating that demons are involved with UFOs or that UFOs flatly are demonic. For a better update on that/those topics I suggest that you get acquainted with the many of the thousands of people that have taken the drug Ayahuasca clinically known as DMT. An excellent book by Rick Strassman is entitled,” Inner Paths to Outer Space”. It is available from Amazon. If you read the book, you will find that even when Strassman was doing the initial DMT experiments using college students in the mid-1990s that his subjects frequently reported contact with aliens in one fashion or another. The book does attempt to put such experiences in perspective as internal to the experiencer, but it fails to answer the larger question of exactly what is going on.
Having experienced total loss of control of my body and mind during my abduction while I was driving in 1964, I strongly suspect that the ETs are real, very much as they appear in body and ships but that these days they find the DMT users easier, receptive targets, getting into and controlling if not altering their philosophical states of mind. Some of them remember strange encounters with aliens, some do not. Reflecting back on my experience, I remember only the beginning and end of my two-hour time loss. If I can be programmed starting from a fully conscious state, I suspect it is possible that some of these DMT people may have been influences beyond what they remember. (Some may not be suitable.) From what I understand in learning about DMT is that typically the experiencer gained a perspective of a greater appreciation of the cosmos and, a propensity to think that the New World Order is not such a bad concept. I can attest that overnight I had a change of view on far beyond that I held the day before.

Without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm.
In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this, it could save their lives!"
Star Wars Defense Initiative
Remember President Reagan saying the Star Wars Defense initiative was for the defense of the planet, not the defense of the country? That was when the funding was supposedly being cut. I don't think the funding was cut. It just moved into a black box. I think alien abductions are real and the reason for secrecy is no one wants to admit that we cannot do anything about it, even though we shoot at them once in a while. Derrel Sims reports, “We have over 20 dsp (defense systems program satellites) out in geo synchronous orbits…looking at other satellites to see what they are doing?
They can see in ir, uv, and natural light. It’s a pretty neat configuration if you are knowledgeable in ufo work of ir, uv and natural light imaging. This satellite system has followed fast walkers (ufo and objects that travel faster than "us" and slow walkers (which are objects that are not 'us"…and move slowly…
The dsp system has a log record of every event like this (and much more) since its inception.
If the government wanted to, it could prove abduction and ufo contact made to mankind that is in view of the every 12 minute sweep of these big eyes in the sky.
I agree with the star wars defense initiative. If aliens want DNA material they should come to the negotiating table and bargain for it. They are users taking what they want because they can.
I look forward to when we have the technical ability to talk to them as equals, although I doubt if this will happen within our lifetimes. Neither will disclosure unless it is ousted by unofficial channels. There are just too many odd things happening for it all to be nothing. It is the greatest lie ever sold. I have seen a UFO, and my friend saw a landed craft with aliens on the ground that was disguised as a barn by a hologram. U.S. Navy Unveils New Weapon: The P-8A Poseidon
The U.S. Navy is preparing to equip the USS Ponce with a laser cannon, which can cheaply disable drones and speedboats.
Another winter storm is bringing snow from Illinois to the Northeast. This winter's severe cold over the Great Lakes--Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario--froze a near-record amount of ice this year. Ice coverage peaked at 92.2% on March 6, the 2nd highest ice cover on record, according to NOAA. Unusual cold temperatures have created Preliminary measurements from CryoSat show that the volume of Arctic sea ice in autumn 2013 was about 50% higher than in the autumn of 2012.
Antarctic sea ice extent continues to track very high in January, reaching the second-highest monthly extent in the 36-year satellite monitoring record.
EVPATORIA, UKRAINE --The Russian Navy placed the decommissioned Russian anti-submarine vessel Ochakov, from the Black Sea fleet, in the middle of the entrance to the Ukrainian Navy home port in, then SANK that old Russian ship to permanently block the Ukrainian Navy vessels located at Donuzlav lake from accessing the Black Sea. This is a "blockade" and, since there is no national security threat to Russia from the Ukraine Navy, and since there is no declaration of war between Russia and Ukraine, this is an act of war by Russia against Ukraine.
SIMFEROPOL, Crimea – Lawmakers in Crimea voted for this mostly Russian enclave to become part of Russia and moved up a referendum to decide the matter to March 16.
Ukraine’s interim government and Supreme Court have rejected talk of a Crimean referendum to determine its status, calling it unconstitutional. Russia says it will decide how to go forward after the referendum happens.
The referendum will asks Crimean’s two questions: whether they want to be part of Russia or whether they’d like to adopt the 1992 Crimean Constitution, which would give Crimea more autonomy under Ukraine.
“We’re not working out what to do if Crimea joins the Russian Federation because we believe it’s unconstitutional,” Ukrainian interim Economy Minister Pavlo Sheremeta said.
Crimea’s new Prime Minister Sergei Aksyonov has rejected the Kiev government, saying ousted President Viktor Yanukovich is the country’s rightful president. Aksyonov said says 11,000 pro-Russian “self-defense troops” have joined Crimean military and riot police forces and now control all access to Crimea.
When Russian President Vladimir Putin was asked about Russia annexing Crimea, he told reporters: “Only the people who live in a certain territory have the right to decide their own future.” US forces have been moved into some bases close to Russia.
Note:Putin will likely gain control of Simferopol; Russia’s only warm water port located on the Black Sea.
Malaysia Aircraft Missing
Chinese satellite probing the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 missing since March 7 Friday, with 239 passengers and crew on board has observed three suspected floating objects in the sea south of Vietnam. Hishammuddin Hussein of Malaysia denied this was parts of the Boeing 777 or a US report that the plane might have flown for four hours after contact with air traffic control was lost. The Boeing 777-200ER like the one that disappeared is about 61 meters (200 feet) and its overall length is about 64 meters (210 feet). Some speculatethe aircraft was hijacked by two Iranian passengers.

Arizona Light
HUNTINGTON BEACH – On March 5, 2014, the witness was driving on Garfield into his complex when he noticed a strange light in the sky that was neither a star nor an aircraft. He contacted his wife by phone to meet outside and she also observed the object move west for a short distance slowing, and then stopping. Suddenly it dropped a glowing ball of fire toward the earth that was lost below the tree line. The main object remained overhead and dropped a total of four objects before it faded away.

Sahuarita -- Watching the sky lighten up at sunrise, I have witnessed many strange things and I am coming into another active period of strange sightings. As I was looking South, I noticed a vibrant bright, slightly yellowish light that sparkled like an enormous diamond on March 10, 2014. It was moving northeast at probably 15 - 20 mph, absolutely silent and without any visible engines, wings, tail or nose, it resembled a tall narrow bell jar with a plate shaped bottom. As the object moved over the top of the house at 500 feet I could see with my binoculars that there was no visible structure to it, just pure light with a plate shaped bottom. It was exactly the same craft/object I witnessed on September 12th and 14th of 2012. The sighting on the 12th involved an Air Force jet from Davis Monthan AFB in South Tucson, which is about 9 miles North of where I live.

California Mass UFO Sightings
Los Angeles – Videos were made of Robert Bingham's Public UFO Summoning Event at MacArthur Park in Downtown Los Angeles on February 22, 2014. The event was a celebration of Robert's two year Anniversary since going public with his abilities to summon UFOs. A large crowd showed up to witness multiple UFO sightings. The event started with two sizable orbs interacting with each other then continued as a large orb hovered over the crowds. The orbs interacted and divided. Everyone was excited and stayed at the park until late in the afternoon to discuss the sightings of the day.

Florida Triangle
Port St. Lucie – On March 2-3, 2014, at 11 PM, off Jensen Beach witness saw dark grey object with bright light on bottom. The object appeared triangular in shape with blue light around the perimeter. A dime would cover the object. The object appeared "thick" and about 50 feet long as it hovered, flashed lights, and then moved erratically. Witness said that he flashed a halogen light at it, whereon it "went out" and then flashed back. A helicopter circled the area but the object "disappeared" only to reappear after the helicopter left. Witness watched the object for seven hours and took several pictures. It finally gained altitude and disappeared over the ocean. According to the witness, approximately 35 people stopped to look at the object. Witness is an Assistant Manager of Golden Corral. He has seen UFOs several times. Thanks to MUFON CMS
BOYNTON BEACH -- I witnessed three bright orange lights traveling from the SW to NE soon joined by one more and quickly followed by two more on March 7, 2014. The first group hovered in a triangular formation while the other three danced around them. This group was then joined by four more moving in a single file. Once it joined the group the first six were in two groups of three in triangular formation. The final four danced around the grouping of six. In a few minutes the lights grew dimmer and eventually just seemed to disappear. I went inside to grab my cell phone and managed to take 15 second video. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Hawaii Stars
Keaau-Pahoa -- Driving on Kaloli Avenue ocean bound with my friend in passenger seat, noticed objects flying in a zigzag formation all orange in color. I stopped and turned off the engine and the lights of my jeep. My friend and I observed the objects fly in a changing formation in southwest and I took four pictures. A home owner came out and another object flew byand saw it. I was able to enlarge my pictures and to my amazement I saw a structured object of unknown origin.

Nevada UFO
HENDERSON -- On March 3, 2014, last Tuesday the witness a Private Pilot with his uncle saw strange lighting in the sky. The "navigation lights, looked really strange" they kind of swooshed green and red around a constant pulsating strobe. They got out of their car and realized it was too high to be a helicopter and was moving abruptly to the left, accelerated and decelerated fast, but smoothly.
It suddenly descended and stopped right over the homes in the valley at about 500 feet and two miles north where it disappeared. There was some very fancy L E D lighting on the hull and a conventional aircraft would not be able to withstand the G's. It would need to have an antigravity drive to avoid hitting the ground at the speed it achieved. His uncle thought it was some kind of a casino stunt.
The Question is why would it descend in the vicinity of McCarran Airport in a highly populated area. Thanks to MUFON CMS
LAS VEGAS -- On March 7, 2013, the witness stepped out tothe back yard and looked up and noticed a series of dull green lights in a straight line pattern. He then noticed another series of lights near the others and could clearly see they were connected by a solid boomerang shaped object, moving from west to east with a constant speed and direction. It was very high and appeared to be over 500 feet long. He watched the object for 45 seconds before losing sight as it traveled southeast. Thanks to MUFON CMS
New Jersey Orb
MEDFORD – I saw apulsating orb with ring that was changing colors rapidly on March 5, 2014. It was moving short distances rapidly in all directions, while observing the constellation Sagittarius with a very bright star pulsating and changing directions very rapidly. It continued with this color and travel pattern.
I am convinced that this was no plane or helicopter, due to the rapid ability of the object to change directions constantly and stop. I asked my wife to observe the UFO and we continued to observe for 20 minutes. A neighbor came and he claimed to be a military pilot in the past and tried to explain it as a fighter. But when I pointed out the rapid direction of travel while not following a flight path, he couldn't explain it.
I had my cell phone with me and tried to video and could see the vivid colors pulsating on the surface of the orb, as well as a ring. I observed multiple UFO's in 1967, when I was 14 years old. I have prior law enforcement experience, with extensive observation and investigative skills while in the corporate security profession for over 35 years. I have also been a certified NJSP certified security officer Instructor since 2007.

TABERNACLE -- I was riding my bike on March 7, 2014, and heard a sound in the sky that made me look up to see a UFO. It was a tent like shape that was black and white that had something that looked like a clear propeller in the back. It appeared to be some type of stone surface with a split in the middle and possibly a door with red flashing lights around it. There were also red flashing lights all the way around the tent like shaped object. It moved through the air at a medium pace but it rose up about two feet doing this three times. Then it just disappeared. When I initially saw it I got scared and froze for a moment. I ran inside and told my grandfather what I had witnessed and we looked it had just disappeared.

North Carolina Triangle
Fayetteville -- I was about 8yrs old in 1986, my younger baby brother was taken for ride to help him go to sleep. My uncle and mother when they came home, they were both quite excited. They said they had seen a UFO. They described an object that was rectangular, estimated about 100ft long and 30 to 40ft wide with bars of white light on the bottom. It hovered in place for a few minutes and then suddenly rocketed away and disappeared. The next night when they came home, again they had seen something. The next night, again they saw something. The fourth night, I asked to come along. I saw what at first appeared to be an airplane but it was much lower and slower. I saw three small white lights that formed a perfect triangle. The lights themselves were quite. There was a dark mass between the lights so it had to be a solid object about the size of an airliner at between 500 and 1,000feet.
I pointed it out to my mom and uncle and followed it in our car for some distance. We actually got ahead of it at some point and it flew right over us. A few minutes later, we saw the craft change from three white lights into one large white light and began to accelerate leaving a streak of light in its wake. Thirty seconds after it disappeared, three large airplanes flying one behind the other and quite close to each other, came from the direction of the Air Force Base. They were at about the same altitude as the UFO apparently attempting to find the UFO.
I'm not completely sure what I saw. Whatever it was, it got the attention of the air force.

Oregon Light
ATHENS – On March 11, 2014, in early morning I saw another orb that was a lot better than August 3,-2013. An orb or fireball lights with some of them turned 180 degrees another one goes very low and another one was to much lower. I recorded with my Sony Xperia camera mini st15i the ufo event but it can’t record the lights except one that you see in pictures. This one you can see in daylight with my finger where it was. After nine minutes it was gone.

Tennessee Triangle
Hixson -- At 10:55 PM, I was standing outside with my dog when I saw what appeared to be a dark gray triangle shape object with no lights on it gliding across the night sky over a suburb of Chattanooga on February 28, 2014. It was about 1/8 to 1/5 the size of a full moon. There was no sound, and it was traveling east for about 12 seconds and flew out of sight remaining the same speed and direction the entire time. Virginia Red Ball
Charlottesville– A red ball of light became a halo as it moved up into the sky and flew erratically, then straightened out on February 22, 2014, at 8 PM. One object came up from the South. It started low on the horizon, and I thought it was just a plane heading north for a landing. The object was really low, though, and I saw it jerk to the West suddenly. I thought then that it might be a meteor that was splitting up, and that it was so low it might hit nearby.
When I got a good view and I could tell it wasn't a plane. It had no flashing lights and moved faster than any aircraft. After a few seconds, the jerking motions stopped and the center of the object actually blacked out. It picked up speed and just kept going north at high speed.
Burien-- On February 28, 2014, no motion was detected from what appeared to be a twinkling star or planet. Through my binoculars it appeared to pulsate and change color. That is when I took a picture with my Smartphone. I totally enlarged it the next day, and was surprised by what I saw. I am forwarding the original picture and also an enlargement of the original.

Australia Sightings
Humpty Doo, Northern Territory -- We were going for our 6:05 AM walk on February 28th 2014, and our dog was acting very strange. We saw a very bright white round orb surrounded by a distinct protective cloud. This cloud protector moved surrounding the white orb light across the sky and lasted for a 30 seconds plus. We took photos and video of it hovering and then proceeding and it vanishing but they are poor.
Hillarys, Perth-- I was lying on the grass at 8:30 pm just relaxing with the missus when I saw four stars form an almost perfect square in the sky on March 1, 2014. I noticed the top right 'star' slowly moving down towards the lower corner of the square, which I naturally thought was a satellite. The thing that intrigued me was the 'star' started moving back up to its original position, then higher, then started rotating in a clock wise direction.
We went in doors and a half hour later it was gone, and only the three stars remained to form the almost complete square.
Sydney-- I photographed my wife at a place called "The Gap" South of Sydney Harbor on December 4, 2014. I did not see the object until I looked at the screen after the shot was taken.
I thought it was a UFO moving at speed. The shutter speed was one two fiftieth of a second, and the object was blurred. It has a white spot on the right hand side of it.Thanks to MUFON CMS
Brazil Apparition
São Paulo/SP – I was home eating and looked at the sky and saw a brief apparition fading and turn off its lights gradually. I thought it was a civil aircraft, but marveled as it changed the route and faded and disappear gradually. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Canada Disk
Huntsville,Ontario -- I have been watching these strange lights and one had four or five different colors. All of sudden I saw a bright light going southeast in behind my house and down behind the trees. It looks like it was searching for something on February 17, 2014 at 4:30 AM. I was using binoculars and saw different freaky colors.
Buckingham -- I was taking a walk when all of a sudden I noticed a bright light on the horizon between houses. I started walking towards the light when I noticed it had moved into the forest, but I could not go into the forest because of all the snow. At first, I thought it was a light flashing on a Cell tower but there is none there. I have never seen a light there in the 7 years I have lived there. It was a very bright flashing light every 10 seconds white/blue in color. I was nervous and anxious to see what it was but mad that I could not go in the forest to get closer due to the snow. I decided to leave after looking at it for 5 minutes as I was getting cold. This was filmed around 10 pm on March 1st 2014. Can it be a UFO?

I went to smoke a cigarette and saw something in the sky on March 8, 2014. I thought it was a bird, and then I noticed there are two objects flying in the same direction with exactly the same speed. The objects were rectangles with lights on the corners. It flew from west to east. I was scared. The objects just disappeared after about 10 seconds. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Germany Two Silver Disks in Sky off Autobahn
Potzberg -- I was driving north on A-62 in the direction of Trier at 08:20 AM, on February 15, 2014, and there was one other car on the autobahn in front of me. To the east I saw what appeared to be two silver flat disk objects moving diagonally up and down in the sky over the hills above the village a little ahead of me off the autobahn.
The sky was a dark gray color and it was drizzling rain. The objects appeared flat and shiny silver and about dime-sized from my vantage point. They appeared to have a sort of tail of light that moved with them. I took my foot off the accelerator to slow down and cleaned my windshield thinking they might be a reflection of some kind, but I could still see them after I did that.

New Zealand Meteorite
WAIKANAE, WELLINGTON -- My friend and I took a walk and we saw this huge coppery orange bright object coming towards earth on January 3, 2014. At 9 pm, it was moving closer fast and I started freaking out that it was a meteorite heading towards us aflame.
My friend insisted it was some sort of space ship. All of a sudden it stops and goes back even faster getting smaller and disappearing.
I work as an airline pilot for an airline in Europe. In October 2013 I was operating crew member on the flight from Germany to Skopje (Macedonia). When we flew over Slovenia, I took photos of the Triglav Mountain and National Park. Later I noticed several glowing orbs on the photos that were taken successively.

Turkey Disc
The witnesswas walking down Market Street when he snapped a picture of the people and markets. I first detected the object in the picture when I was home shuffling through my pictures. I can’t believe my camera caught this but there is no reaction from the people walking. Very odd looking, but very typical saucer shape.

--While watching Global Leaks "Drone Footage - northern tip of Crimea" on U-Tube I noticed an anomaly at around 0:31 seconds of a disc that enters from left bottom and travels diagonally towards what appears to be a road. Then takes and abrupt right turn and out of picture! I generally dismiss ufo videos and sightings with common sense!

KOROSTEN – A cylindrical UFO was videotaped moving over the city on March 6, 2014. Allegedly, MSN has reported on the video. Allegedly, this is a USAF Sky Dreadnought that is the most advanced military weapons system in the history of human existence. The ship, a long, cigar-shaped craft, is almost 3,000 feet long, about the length of three aircraft carriers and flies by virtue of a gravity-manipulation system. It was also uploaded to Canada’s Yahoo! News.
UK/England Klingon Craft
KENT, ENGLAND -- A Lewisham family of UFO buffs are looking for other witnesses to an "intelligently-controlled" triangular objectwhich flew over their house towards Kent.
Les Burlington, 68, first spotted the UFO - a bright white light in the sky moving from their Cliffview Road house towards Hilly Fields - on February 22, 2014, at around 8.45 pm. He called to his son Andrew, and they both watched from the back garden, making out two white lights, one of which turned red for about a second.
Andrew Burlington, 38, said, "Whatever it was, we all agree on one thing - it was being intelligently controlled." The computer repairman said, "It appeared to be at flying at the same height as some low cloud that we could just about see in the sky because it went behind them briefly.”The object circled over our garden a couple of times and above the roofs of two houses in Fossil Road before moving off towards Kent. "My dad using binoculars thought it looked triangular in shape."
"The object was completely silent and there were no flashing lights on it. "We often get police helicopters circling nearby areas and they are always extremely noisy and have flashing red, green and white lights on them, so I think that rules that out." The pair - who both claim to have seen unexplained phenomena in the sky before - want other people to come forward who may have seen the UFO, which appeared to pass over Lewisham High Street. Macclesfield, Cheshire – I witnessed a 200 to 400 meters long Klingon like ship with several delta wings joined by structure; no lights or engines on February 27, 2014. It was dark brown/black color preceded by something going up and down our road at100 mph. It flew from 7 to 15 miles away in 10 seconds through 15 degrees of arc. It was silent and flew behind a cloud base and disappeared. Note photo is rendering.

As the US Air Force, US Navy, and even the National Guard conducted an ongoing undeclared air war with UFO’s in a number of intense incidents, the American public was oblivious as the US media cooperated with the truth embargo. Yet, according to Philip J. Corso in his book, “The Day After Roswell” many scientific breakthroughs attributed to human ingenuity were in reality harvested from alien artifacts recovered from the UFO crash near Roswell in 1947.
According to US Army Colonel Corso retired, debris of the wreckage yielded a number of mysterious devices that were secretly ceded to US defense contractors as captured foreign technology. Thanks to General Nathan F. Twining who ingeniously sequestered the recovered alien devices under the aegis of foreign technology right under the nose of the public and competing intelligence agencies like the OSS, the instrumentality that survived the crash near Roswell was secured for future generations to back engineer.
Mankind an unwitting beneficiary
Under the direction of his superior, General Arthur Trudeau, a very deft move resurrected the recovered Roswell wreckage that had been hidden by US Army intelligence from the prying eyes of civilians and competing armed services within the Pentagon, and back engineered by US contractors. The giant technological advances made by mankind according to Philip J. Corso can be attributed to the efforts by General Trudeau and his aid Corso himself in discreetly handing off alien artifacts that would yield breakthrough discoveries in electronics, propulsion, and other instrumentality.
A telecommunications veteran weighs in
From lasers, to pilot to aircraft interface, the bizarre hardware of the alien civilization that either crashed due to the disruption to its systems by powerful military targeting radar or by design, leant a speedy methodology that jump started human technological advancement toward light conducting optical fibers, miniaturized circuitry, electromagnetic properties, stealth, and computer memory. Philip Corso presents a puzzling alternative history as the true origin of mankind’s seemingly all too rapid ascent to technological development. These findings are further corroborated by an acquaintance I would make with an educator.
I spoke with an electronics teacher at a now defunct video technical institute who worked for Bell Northern Labs for more than 40 years. As an instructor he often told his students that he believed that man’s technical advancement did not go unaided by an extraterrestrial influence. He simply stated that after years in telephony and the sudden change that came about in a very short time that this speedy development completely contradicted what direction was being undertaken by the analog, vacuum tube, electronics that were not soon destined to be eclipsed into obsolescence by a vastly different form of improvement that could not have been foreseen. This man taught my brother, who received a 2 year degree from this institute. This professor of impressive credentials would later provide me with contacts to UFO witnesses, one of them being a former Florida policeman, who witnessed a fantastic aerial phenomenon event over the skies of Miami along with a crowd of onlookers.
The persistence of denial
As the American public was led astray by the government over the subject of UFO’s being told that there was nothing to it, that it was all within the realm of misperception and hoax, events continued to perplex aviators and high command. If indeed there was nothing to UFO’s one might ask why well known writer, Donald Keyhoe, was literally blacked out from the TV screen during an interview he conducted with an Air Force Colonel because one of his questions was not on a script that was supposed to have been followed. On this NBC program in 1958 in front of millions of American viewers the public experienced the kind of iron fisted censorship used by the Soviet Union and other fascist governments to suppress the truth!
End of one war but not another
When the Korean War ended in 1953, the undeclared air war over the skies of the US did not. November 23, 1953 USAF pilot Felix Moncla in his F-89 Scorpion had been ordered to intercept a UFO over a vast stretch of Lake Superior guided by an air traffic controller at Truax Air Force Base in Madison Wisconsin. Scrambled out of Kinross AFB, F-89 Scorpion all weather interceptor crew pursued the strange aerial intruder. As his backseat radar officer 2nd Lieutenant R. Wilson attempted to clarify their bearings on the unknown aerial object, they rapidly approached at 500 knots. Little did they know their fate with destiny became sealed forever in the tomb of the unknown. As the air traffic controller watched both blips on his screen converge (F-89 and UFO) they disappeared and radio contact with Felix Moncla and his interceptor aircraft was lost forever. A massive search yielded no results in the days that followed.
Caught in a lie!
When the US Air Force issued a formal statement that Moncla and Wilson had collided with a Royal Canadian military Cargo plane, the Canadian authorities immediately denied that their aircraft had been involved! Yet, such is the case in the long history of the UFO cover-up. Few answers can be given and many more questions arise. Especially, when the governments of the world have followed a policy of denial and ridicule until recently, still the US maintains a veil of secrecy over the issue. The stubborn policy of lies and counter intelligence tactics continues to shroud the true nature of UFO’s in a realm of uncertainty.
US aircraft losses continue
A year after the armistice of the Korean War had finally been negotiated, still the fatal specter of the unknown cast a shadow over the UFO landscape. July 1, 1954 another incident that would spell tragedy for the participants occurred. A bright unknown object in the sky reported by many callers initiated a scramble order from Griffiss Air Force Base. The two man crew of an F-94 Starfire jet interceptor climbed into the sky to meet their appointment with destiny. As the backseat radar officer picked up the unknown target at approximately 6 miles distant ground intercept continued to guide the two man crew. The F-94 Starfire was to climb to an altitude of 20,000 feet in search of its objective.
As the pilots closed in on the reflective airborne disk of unknown origin, tragedy struck! Both pilots were assaulted by a suffocating wave of heat within their cockpit that quickly convinced them their aircraft was stricken with an unrecoverable in-flight failure. The controversy is apparently whether or not these aviators were attacked as they steered toward the UFO or whether or not as they flew through a break in the clouds they found themselves in the path of a mid-air collision with a bright unidentified craft with hostile intentions.
Removing the veil naivety
Such encounters as this quickly stripped away the benign aspect attached to UFO’s as merely being harmless glowing objects in the sky that often outran the interceptor pilots tasked with maintaining a secure air space as is the mission of the domestic air defense role. The pilots were quickly forced to eject as the sweltering heat within the aircraft rapidly overcame them. As the pilots clung to their parachutes and descended in the relative silence of the upper altitudes they looked down in horror to see their stricken F-94 Starfire jet crash into a building in the small town of Walesville, NY and explode into flames striking a car and killing the family of four within that vehicle.
Still the truth remains hidden
Despite the desire of the two aviators to tell the people of Walesville what had really happened, they were quickly retrieved by an Air Force staff car and debriefed. The mention of a UFO in relation to this case was quickly dismissed by authorities, but there were those who knew and were asking questions. The Air Force officers anxious to explain to the families of the victims in Walesville were put under strict orders to maintain silence over this troubling incident.
The ominous conclusion
Such has been the case in the long twisted corridors of time under the darkness of official denial that has woven a web of questionable circumstance and misleading accounts. There seems an undeniable parallel of human history and events not so clearly understood as the UFO mystery eclipses many attempts of denial and repudiation. As man continues to approach levels of advancement that force us to ponder our future still the unseen hand of a persistent enigma calls out to us from darkened skies as pilots vanish and aircraft are lost for no apparent reason.

An Arizona witness at Sahuarita reported a “glowing vertical cylinder” UFO with “rays of light poking out of it” that moved slowly overhead about 6:05 a.m. on March 12, 2014, according to testimony in Case 54651 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness was outside in the backyard “anticipating this object to return” after having seen it twice in 2012 and also on March 10, 2014, as reported in Case 54564. The witness details the current sighting from March 12.
“The object came from the west, no evidence of an engine, wings, nose, tail or rotors,” the witness stated. “It's a vertical cylinder shape with what I can only describe as rays of light poking out of it. It moved silently and smoothly at approximately 15 mph.”
Attempts by the witness to photograph or videotape the object did not come out well.
“It also changed direction from heading east to northeast. I was able to finally take a picture but the camera was reading the background as black and the object turned out small. I am unable to transmit the picture since I am using an iPad, but could email it to someone through my husband's computer if there's any interest.”
The witness is hoping the object returns again.
“As the object moved further away to the northeast it got smaller due to the distance and then it just disappeared. I am hoping that it will come back maybe one more time but since its behavior is exactly like my sightings two years ago, I doubt that will happen, but I will be ready with the camera!”
Both cases remain under investigation by Arizona MUFON.

CBS 6 was contacted via email and Twitter about a photo snapped Thursday at Southpark Mall, that allegedly captured a UFO in the clouds.
Erica Skiddle said was with her mother and sister tonight at the Southpark Mall. They were leaving a department store and exited around 6:30 p.m. to a “weird and ominous” sky.
“My mom and I took several pictures of the sky and while we began looking through our pictures, I noticed in one of mine that there was something,” Skiddle wrote via email. “I had no flash in, nor a filter.” “And my mom looked through hers and also saw she had whatever it was in one of hers,” she added.
Erica described what she and her mom saw in the pictures as looking “…like there are six little lights, in like a hexagon, I don’t know, it just looks weird.”
According to the National UFO Reporting Center, for as long as they have been keeping records, 1,490 UFOs have been reported in the grand state of Old Virginny.

A West Virginia Dad in Sutton relates a UFO encounter his daughter and two friends had where a fireball-looking object appeared to move intelligently overhead, according to March 7, 2014, testimony in Case 54493 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The father tells the story from his daughter’s point of view about the event, which occurred about midnight on March 2, 2014. West Virginia MUFON Assistant State Director Dennis Henshaw is investigating.
The daughter and two friends were on their way to pick up a friend from work when a bright light was first noticed.
“Light was bright enough to see from other lights,” the witness stated. “Stopped to see what it was and thought it was a meteor. It came down towards a plane, commercial type, and thought it was going to hit it. Fireball stopped as if to let plane pass, and then continued.”
The witness described the object.
“It made a zigzag pass, glowed brighter, and then dimmer. Had tentacles (shafts of light come out from top and bottom), shoot from top and bottom. It dimmed to almost nothing. We thought it was gone and then it came back on and finally disappeared behind the mountain.”
Although no images or videos were included with the MUFON report, which was filed on March 7, 2014, the reporting witness states that one of the friends in the car did record video from a cell phone.
“I was thrilled, scared and praying while watching this. We all were.”
Sutton is a town in Braxton County, WV, population 994. West Virginia has a current UFO Alert Rating of 5 with a low number of recent reports nationally. West Virginia had 3 UFO reports in February 2014 – the 38th highest reporting state – while California had 59 reports – the highest reporting state in the nation.
UFO sightings in Canada are sky high, hitting a total only seen once before in the past 25 years.
There were 1,180 UFO sightings reported in 2013, or about three each day, according to the Canadian UFO Survey, an annual survey released Tuesday by Winnipeg-based UFOlogy Research of Manitoba.
It is the second-highest number recorded in Canada in the past 25 years. The peak year was 2012, when almost 2,000 reports were recorded.
The spike in 2012 was likely an anomaly due to many people excited about the so-called “end of the world” in 2012 according to the Mayan Calendar, and reporting many lights and objects as UFOs, suggested UFOlogy Research director Chris Rutkowski.
UFO report highlights
Ontario had more than 40 per cent of all Canadian UFO reports.
About 14 per cent of all reports were classified as unexplained.
The typical sighting lasted approximately 13 minutes.
As for 2013, there are several theories for the surge in reports, Rutkowski suggested.
Among them:
More UFOs are present and physically observable by witnesses
More secret or classified military exercises and overflights are occurring over populated areas
More people are taking the time to observe their surroundings
And more people are able to report their sightings with easier access to the Internet and portable technology.
Or perhaps, more people are simply searching for divine answers and catching a glimpse of something else, Rutkowski said.
“That the downturn in the economy is leading to an increased desire by some people to look skyward for assistance,” he wrote in the survey report.
The results show many people continue to report unusual objects in the sky, and some of these objects do not have obvious explanations, Rutkowski stated in a press release.
“Many witnesses are pilots, police and other individuals with reasonably good observing capabilities and good judgment,” he said.
CBC News reported last year that the Canadian government has given up chasing unidentified flying objects. Its various federal agencies, including Transport Canada, the RCMP and the Department of National Defence, used to track and investigate UFO sightings to some degree, but it’s now up to civilian volunteers to report what’s going on up in the sky.
Any information on UFO sightings received by the various agencies is now passed on to Rutkowski, a civilian science writer who has produced the Canadian UFO survey since 1989.

VLT spots largest yellow hypergiant star: Mix of new and old observations reveals exotic binary system
ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer has revealed the largest yellow star — and one of the ten largest stars found so far. This hypergiant has been found to measure more than 1300 times the diameter of the Sun, and to be part of a double star system, with the second component so close that it is in contact with the main star. Observations spanning over sixty years, some from amateur observers, also indicate that this rare and remarkable object is changing very rapidly and has been caught during a very brief phase of its life.
Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), Olivier Chesneau (Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, Nice, France) and an international team of collaborators have found that the yellow hypergiant star HR 5171 A [1] is absolutely huge — 1300 times the diameter of the Sun and much bigger than was expected [2]. This makes it the largest yellow star known. It is also in the top ten of the largest stars known — 50% larger than the famous red supergiant Betelgeuse — and about one million times brighter than the Sun.
“The new observations also showed that this star has a very close binary partner, which was a real surprise,” says Chesneau. “The two stars are so close that they touch and the whole system resembles a gigantic peanut.”
The astronomers made use of a technique called interferometry to combine the light collected from multiple individual telescopes, effectively creating a giant telescope up to 140 metres in size. The new results prompted the team to thoroughly investigate older observations of the star spanning more than sixty years, to see how it had behaved in the past [3].
Yellow hypergiants are very rare, with only a dozen or so known in our galaxy — the best-known example being Rho Cassiopeiae. They are among the biggest and brightest stars known and are at a stage of their lives when they are unstable and changing rapidly. Due to this instability, yellow hypergiants also expel material outwards, forming a large, extended atmosphere around the star.
Despite its great distance of nearly 12,000 light-years from Earth, the object can just about be seen with the naked eye [4] by the keen-sighted. HR 5171 A has been found to be getting bigger over the last 40 years, cooling as it grows, and its evolution has now been caught in action. Only a few stars are caught in this very brief phase, where they undergo a dramatic change in temperature as they rapidly evolve.
By analysing data on the star’s varying brightness, using observations from other observatories, the astronomers confirmed the object to be an eclipsing binary system where the smaller component passes in front and behind the larger one as it orbits. In this case HR 5171 A is orbited by its companion star every 1300 days. The smaller companion is only slightly hotter than HR 5171 A’s surface temperature of 5000 degrees Celsius.
Chesneau concludes “The companion we have found is very significant as it can have an influence on the fate of HR 5171 A, for example, stripping off its outer layers and modifying its evolution.”
This new discovery highlights the importance of studying these huge and short-lived yellow hypergiants, and could provide a means of understanding the evolutionary processes of massive stars in general.

Saturn and Jupiter: X-ray laser spies deep into giant gas planets
Using DESY’s X-ray laser FLASH, researchers took a sneak peek deep into the lower atmospheric layers of giant gas planets such as Jupiter or Saturn. The observations of the team working with lead author Dr. Ulf Zastrau from the University of Jena reveal how liquid hydrogen becomes a plasma, and provide information on the material’s thermal conductivity and its internal energy exchange, which are important ingredients for planetary models.
The scientists present their experiments in Friday’s issue of the scientific journal Physical Review Letters.
The atmosphere of gas giants consists mainly of hydrogen, which is the most abundant chemical element in the universe. “We have very little experimental knowledge about the hydrogen in the interior of such planets,” says Zastrau. “This is despite our very good theoretical models.” The researchers therefore decided to use cold liquid hydrogen as a sample of the planetary atmosphere. “Liquid hydrogen has a density that corresponds to that of the lower atmosphere of such giant gas planets,” explains Zastrau. The scientists used DESY’s X-ray laser FLASH to heat liquid hydrogen, almost instantaneously, from minus 253 to around 12,000 degrees Celsius and simultaneously observed the properties of the element during the heating process.
Hydrogen is the simplest atom of the periodic table, consisting of a single proton in the atomic nucleus, which is orbited by a single electron. Normally, hydrogen occurs as a molecule consisting of two atoms. The X-ray laser pulse initially heats only the electrons. These slowly transfer their energy to the protons, which are around 2,000 times heavier, until a thermal equilibrium is reached. The molecular bonds break during this process, and a plasma of electrons and protons is formed. Although this process takes many thousands of collisions between electrons and protons, the studies showed that the thermal equilibrium is attained in just under a trillionth of a second (a picosecond).
Astrophysics in the lab:
“We are carrying out experimental laboratory astrophysics,” explains Zastrau. Until now, researchers have relied on mathematical models to describe the interior of gas giants such as Jupiter. Important model parameters include the dielectric properties of hydrogen — for example, the thermal and electrical conductivities — which are crucial to correctly simulate the massive, outward-directed heat flows in giant gas planets.
“The study has revealed the dielectric properties of the liquid hydrogen,” reports co-author Dr. Philipp Sperling from the University of Rostock. “When you know the thermal and electrical conductivities of the individual layers of hydrogen in the atmosphere of a giant gas planet, you can calculate the associated temperature profile.” The researchers’ experiments enabled them to locate a first point in the phase diagram of hydrogen. The experiments will have to be repeated at other temperatures and pressures in order to create a detailed picture of the entire planetary atmosphere.
The study requires a great deal of effort, in part because hydrogen does not normally exist in liquid form on earth. In order to liquefy hydrogen gas, it first must be cooled to minus 253 degrees Celsius. “We use extremely pure hydrogen gas and force it through a copper block that is cooled by liquid helium,” explains DESY researcher Dr. Sven Toleikis, a member of the team. “The temperature must be very precisely controlled during this process. If the hydrogen gets too cold, it freezes and blocks the line,” says Toleikis. In such cases, a small heater is used to re-liquefy the hydrogen as needed. At the end of the copper block, a nozzle projects like a finger into the experimental vacuum chamber. From its tip flows a fine jet of liquid hydrogen with a diameter of just one fiftieth of a millimetre (20 micrometres). This experimental setup has been developed in the course of many years of cooperation between the University of Rostock and DESY.
Super-slowmo
In order to study the properties of liquid hydrogen as it vaporizes, the researchers shot the intense pulses of DESY’s FLASH soft X-ray laser at the fine jet. “For the experiment, we used FLASH’s unique ability to split up the individual flashes,” explains Toleikis. “The first half of the flash heats up the hydrogen, and we use the second half to investigate its properties.” Using the Split-and-Delay Unit, which was developed in cooperation with the University of Münster and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, the second half of the flash is deliberately delayed by a tiny fraction of a second (up to 15 picoseconds, i.e. trillionth of a second). By studying the system in this way with slightly different delay times, the way in which a thermal equilibrium is established between the electrons and the protons in the hydrogen can be observed similar to a super-slow motion camera.
The interpretation of the observation data was not simple, however. “It took us a long time to understand what was actually happening in the experiment,” says Prof. Ronald Redmer, who leads the Rostock working group. The researchers made use of density functional theory — a standard tool of quantum physics which is used to describe systems with many electrons — to model the process. However, this standard procedure does not work for systems with two different temperatures, as in the FLASH experiment. “Before we were able to correctly describe the observations, we had to extend density functional theory with a two-temperature model,” reported Redmer.
“Our experiment showed us the way of how to investigate dense plasmas with X-ray lasers,” says Dr. Thomas Tschentscher, scientific director of the European XFEL X-ray laser, at which experiments will be possible in 2017. “This method opens up the road for further studies, e.g. of denser plasmas of heavier elements and mixtures, as they occur in the interior of planets. Hopefully, the results will provide us among others with an experimentally based answer to the question, why the planets discovered outside our solar system do not exist in all imaginable combinations of properties as age, mass, size or elemental composition, but may be allocated to certain groups.”
In addition to the universities of Jena and Rostock and DESY, researchers from the US research centres SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Helmholtz Institute Jena, the University of Oxford, the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI), the University of Münster and the European XFEL also participated in the study. Time: 08:30 a.m. Local farmer Jan Pienaar, 45, was rounding a curve on a road when he saw a black man shielding his face with his arms as though he wanted to ward off something. At that exact moment the engine of his brand new, small truck stopped. He looked up and saw an incredible sight. Roughly 80 meters on the road in front of him stood a huge craft that rested on three landing pods. It extended over the entire width of the road and was about 8-9 meters high. The entire unit was translucent and lustrous as though it had been fabricated from a type of stainless steel. It had the form of two inverted soup plates with a pudding bowl on top. It appeared as though this upper level had seven windows or portholes. A red-violet-green-yellow glow emanated from somewhere and illuminated the hull. In the sheen of the light he was able to recognize that the flying craft had problems because there was a dent with a hole of a little less than 2 feet on the seam around the edge. He could not see any beings in the vicinity, only the strange craft which buzzed like a gigantic electric beater. He got out of his small truck but suddenly he could not take another step. It was as though a magnet held him on the spot. He stood like that for three to four minutes when the craft suddenly rose into the air. First it lifted up like a helicopter high into the sky, and then it sped off like lighting on a course toward the sky. It took sometime before Pienaar regained his senses and when he got into his truck and turned the ignition, the engine immediately started up again. He called police from a nearby farm and was told that the craft had apparently been seen the previous night in various locations. The ground at the landing site was scorching hot to the touch and could have easily burned a person’s hand. There was a strange lingering odor in the air, almost like chloroform. The old black man that the witness had initially seen had disappeared and could not be found anywhere.

Time: evening Two young girls riding their horses on a field noticed some multicolored circus like lights coming from a nearby glade. Upon investigating they encountered a landed silvery disc shaped object with an egg shaped cupola on top. Time: 1600 As Inacio De Souza, 41, and his wife Maria were approaching their home at Santa Maria; they saw three figures “playing about” on the landing strip of the owner of the Fazenda. The beings were as tall as young children, had no hair and were wearing skin-tight clothing of pale yellow. At the end of the landing strip was an object having the shape of an inverted washbasin. De Souza, carrying a .44 caliber carbine, fired a shot at the nearest person. De Souza not only incurred a circular burned patch 6” in diameter but also upon examination by a physician was found to have leukemia of which he died in less than two months.

The international team of scientists at the North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk, Siberia, believe they can extract DNA taken from the blood of the animal to mix it with that of an elephant.
The team, made up of scientists from several countries including Russia, US, UK, South Korea and Denmark, said the DNA taken from the autopsy could provide the perfect material for cloning.
Radik Khayrullin, vice president of the Russian Association of Medical Anthropologists, added the team must be responsible if they decide to in effect bring the woolly mammoth back to life.
Viktoria Egorova, chief of the Research and Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory of the Medical Clinic of North-Eastern Federal University, described her surprise at how well-preserved the body was after tens of thousands of years.
The mammoth was discovered in May 2013 on the Mally Lyakhovsky Island, off the northern coast of Siberia.

On August 16, 1945, 20 mile southeast of San Antonio, New Mexico, Reme Baca and Jose Padilla literally stumbled across the remains of what they believe to have been an alien spacecraft. Their personal account of the case displays many of the key ingredients of crashed UFO lore:
In August of 1945 Jose Padilla and Reme Baca said they were sent out on horseback from the Padilla Ranch in San Antonio, New Mexico tasked to check on Jose’s father’s herd of new cows.
What they were sent to do and what they claimed to have experienced was nothing short of what actually occurred to them that frightening afternoon.

With trepidation tendered by child-like watchfulness they approached the crash site to within 200 yards to witness a craft stuck in rock and sand; its charred 30 foot hull shrouded in dust and burned ash had skidded to rest at the end of a wide plough-like furrow the length of a football field.
Using binoculars they saw strewn wreckage, strange creatures and military activity that would haunt them for days to come and – for the rest of their lives.
All of this occurring two full years before the archetype of all UFO crashes on the Foster Ranch outside the small town of Corona, New Mexico a mere 67 miles from Roswell.
These astonishing claims, made by Jose Padilla and Reme Baca, have been researched and recorded by Denver author/researcher Paola Harris who – in conversation with ZlandCommunications – detailed how these two young Hispanic children: saw at least three creatures in the unusual oval shaped craft, had, some days later, climbed into the craft itself to retrieve pieces of the wreckage after guards had vacated the area and, how they were told by State Police to be quiet about what they had seen. – exopoliticsinstitute.org

Two little Hispanic children experienced an extraordinary event occurred in August of 1945.
Jose Padilla, age 9 and Reme Baca, age 7 witnessed a saucer crash on Padilla land in the town San Antonio, New Mexico. They were witness to one of the most spectacular events in UFO history.
The book entitled Born on the Edge of Ground Zero: Living in the Shadow of Area 51 describes Jose Padilla’s and Reme Baca’s detailed account of what happened in their childhood. They explain what they saw the actual crash, the creature’s appearances, the pieces they took, the military clean up and an in-depth analysis of the significance of this case.
First printed in The Mountain Mail, Soccorro, New Mexico on November 2, 2003 by journalist Ben Moffet, the case was passed to me, journalist/researcher, Paola Harris in May 4, 2009. The desire to finally disclose the details and the kind invitation of Reme Baca, led me to fly to Gig Harbor in Washington State in the Northern part of the United States to interview witness Reme Baca and his wife, Virginia in July 2010. Consequently because he now lives in California, I interviewed Jose Padilla by telephone from the Baca house. During my two day stay, I was able to see and photograph the piece that Jose extracted from the craft and study the detailed analysis of its composition done in Europe.
It is one of the most astounding cases I have ever covered in my career and it helps complete the puzzle of why there has been so many crash retrievals in New Mexico. As journalist Ben Moffet who so beautifully describes the cover-up, we can begin to see where it fits in UfO history.
It was in this crucible of suspicion and disinterest bred by familiarity that a small contingent of the U.S. Army passed almost unnoticed through San Antonio in mid-to-late August, 1945 on a secret assignment.
Little or nothing has been printed about the mission, shrouded in the “hush-hush” atmosphere of the time. But the military detail apparently came from White Sands Proving Grounds to the east where the bomb was exploded. It was a recovery operation destined for the mesquite and greasewood desert west of Old US-85, at what is now Milepost 139, the San Antonio exit of Interstate 25.
Over the course of several days, soldiers in Army fatigues loaded the shattered remains of a flying apparatus onto a huge flatbed truck and hauled it away. That such an operation took place between about Aug. 20 and Aug. 25, 1945, there is no doubt, insist two former San Antonioans, Remigio Baca and Jose Padilla, eyewitnesses to the event.
Padilla, then age 9, and Baca, 7, secretly watched much of the soldiers’ recovery work from a nearby ridge.
NOTE: other than their interviews with Ben Moffett and Paola Harris, the witnesses have been fairly tight-lipped over this incident. Because of the amount of time it took for the witnesses to finally come forward with the information, I feel their claims need to be examined much further…Lon

On comprendra entre les lignes que les scientifiques de l'espace (du moins US) commencent officiellement à envisager les implications d'un contact éventuel avec une intelligence extérieure. Le pas est ainsi franchi, de la recherche de formes de vie primitive à celle de civilisations. Bien sûr on ne parle pas d'ovnis mais on peut lire en particulier au § 7 : If aliens ever do visit Earth (...) they won't destroy us (...). But others take a darker view..., "Si des aliens devaient éventuellement venir sur Terre (...), leur but ne sera pas de nous détruire (...) Mais d'autres (scientifiques) adoptent un point de vu plus sombre (...)". Ceci suggère que pour les exobiologistes la possibilité que nous soyons (un jour) visités n'est plus aussi folle du'auparavant. Et dès lors qu'on envisage une visite future, il est logique de penser que celle-ci a déjà pu avoir lieu. "Certains" prétendront que je leur fais dire ce qu'ils n'ont pas dit. Pas du tout ; j'écoute les astrobiologistes, surtout leurs conversations de couloir et en privé.

Searching for Life: What Does It Mean for Humanity?

Is intelligence inevitable? How altruistic will aliens be (or will they just wipe us out)? These are just some of the questions posed at a Library of Congress astrobiology discussion on January 28, 2014. Moderated by Washington Post reporter Joel Achenbach, NASA/Library of Congress Astrobiology Chairs David Grinspoon and Steven Dick addressed the topic of “Searching for Life in the Universe: What Does it Mean for Humanity?”
Grinspoon said it seems likely life is widespread throughout the universe because it originated so quickly on Earth. Soon after our planet settled down from its own tumultuous origins, life appeared.
“Any universe that allows order will lead to biology of some sort, a building of complexity,” said Grinspoon. Quoting the author Doris Lessing, Grinspoon added, “There’s a cosmic comfort knowing that if we blow ourselves up, there’s plenty more out there.”
Steven Dick said that if we do find aliens on Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa, or some other more far-flung planets or moons, the discovery could tell us if there are universal biological principles.
But even if we discover that both simple and complex life is widespread, it doesn’t mean intelligence will be universal. Human intelligence implies tool-use and technology — will advanced aliens evolve the same way?
Dick took a pessimistic stance, pointing out that most biologists argue against directional evolution, and so human-like intelligence is not inevitable. He also noted that even if aliens are “intelligent,” they may have mental processes so different from humans there would be no hope for common understanding. Even fundamental aspects of the universe, like math and physics, may be seen by aliens in an entirely different light.
If aliens ever do visit Earth, Grinspoon thinks they won’t destroy us because they’d be so far advanced they simply wouldn’t be bothered. But others take a darker view — referencing the history of Western cultures’ conquest of Native cultures — and so a question often posed in the astrobiology community and particularly SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is, “How do you practice ‘Safe SETI?’” Especially since our radio signals are traveling out into the cosmos, announcing our presence to any who can listen?
Another “advertisement” of life on Earth is our atmosphere. Life produces gases like oxygen and methane, and that acts as a biomarker for aliens looking our way. “Earth has a flagrantly weird atmosphere due to life,” said Grinspoon, and aliens would notice this.
We also are looking for such gases on the 1,000-plus exoplanets that we’ve discovered so far, hoping to find any indications that we’re not alone in the universe. Dick acknowledged an audience comment that our view of exoplanets is a picture of the past, due to the time it takes light to travel, and added that the farthest back our telescopes can see exoplanets is 1600 light years away.
But telescopes are improving, and more exoplanet space missions are in the works. Grinspoon said he’s jealous of astrobiologists 5,000 years in our future, when exoplanets are more commonplace and well understood.

Steven Dick is an astronomer, author, historian of science, and the 2014 NASA/LOC Astrobiology Chair. Prior to this position, he held the chair in aerospace history at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. He served as NASA’s chief historian from 2003 to 2009. David Grinspoon became the first NASA/LOC Astrobiology Chair in 2013. A planetary scientist and former curator of astrobiology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Grinspoon has been involved with many space missions and serves as an adviser to NASA on space exploration strategy. The astrobiology chair was created through a collaboration between NASA’s Astrobiology Program and the Library of Congress, and is named for Baruch “Barry” Blumberg, the founding director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute. The chair holder conducts research on the societal implications of astrobiology.
