Traces of Flesh-Eating Bacteria on Martian Soil?

                                                               

Microscopic photographs taken by NASA’s all-terrain vehicle Curiosity Rover, on mission on Mars since 2012, showed traces of fossilized bacteria which some experts believe to be a Martian kind of our own flesh-eating bacteria here on earth.

The discovery which has caused a stir in the scientific community around the globe could explain the sudden extermination of life on the red planet, more than 200 million years ago.

“At the time, the atmosphere of Mars might have resembled that of the Earth at the beginning of its formation. Huge erupting volcanoes and a basic form of bacterial life spreading increasingly. If it had not been for the sudden disaster that destroyed life on Mars, one might wonder if a few billion years into the future, Mars would not have become identical to the Earth “, explains astrophysicist John Hashgard of the University of Houston in Texas.

Canada: Extraterrestrial Lifeforms Discovered in Meteorite Debris -

Canada| The fragments of meteorite recovered last week by a team of canadian NASA physicians from Western University, in a frozen field near St-Thomas in Ontario, has turned out to contain some living microorganisms. If the discovery is confirmed, these microscopic lifeforms would become the first extraterrestrial organisms to be encountered alive by human scientists.

Peter Brown, Director of Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration (CPSX), who specializes in the study of meteors and meteorites, says that on the evening of the 18th of March, a long-lasting fireball which occurred near 10:24 p.m. was detected by seven of the all-sky cameras of Western’s Southern Ontario Meteor Network (SOMN). Two camera systems in Ohio and Pennsylvania jointly operated with NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office also captured images of the object.

Brown along with Phil McCausland, an Assistant Professor and Meteorite Curator at Western’s Department of Earth Sciences, have been able to recover fragments of the meteorite thanks to the help of the public. They have been analyzing the object for barely a week, but they have already been capable of gathering many samples of the unidentified lifeforms.

“We had noticed that the mineral fragment seemed to be covered with microscopic grooves and believed we could have found traces of some now extinct lifeforms, like those already discovered on Mars” explains Mr McCausland. “We were extatic when we noticed that many of the organisms were still alive! We were able to collect a few hundreds which we should now be able to study more thoroughly. Of course, this is the kind of discovery which we do not intend to keep for ourselves. Scientists of many different expertises and from all over the world have already manifested their interest in participating in the research. I think it could be years before we learn everything we can from those microorganisms.”

The general director of NASA, Charles F. Bolden, saluted the discovery and praised the canadian university for it’s exceptional contribution to the world’s astrological knowledge. He added that many NASA experts were to take part in the study of these lifeforms.

Alien Abduction Cases Soar in Cape Town, South Africa

                                                               

Cape Town, the second-most populous city in South Africa, has been struck by a massive increase in what local authorities have called ‘alien abduction cases’. Over 200 UFO sightings have occurred in the past months and no less then 16 alleged victims of sexual assault by ‘alien like’ humanoids were reported to police forces in past weeks, calling the city to immediate action.

«We are asking citizens to stay calm and to please not panic. The situation should be resolved any moment» declared Jim McLaren, a spokesman for the mayor. «The mayor is temporarily outside the city and unreachable for comments at the moment» he explained.

«Before people started disappearing, many farmers complained about their missing cattle» explains Leigh Britts, a local ufologist who has been studying the abductions.  «Sometimes, they found dozens of sheep or cows decapitated, shred to pieces or torn inside out. It was simply horrible!» he recalls.

Most abduction victims are found wandering in the streets, with temporary amnesia and unusually high levels of alcohol in their bloodstream. «It is very peculiar that extra-terrestrial beings would use alcohol to intoxicate their victims» wonders Dr. Wundbärt, visiting astrophysicist at the University of Cape Town, who has written more then 30 books on the subject of UFOs.

«South Africa has something that seems to attract these UFOs. Is it the gold or the diamonds? Why have they been visiting this specific location for hundreds, even thousands of years?» he asks. «Indigenous zulu tribes told of their brothers being taken away to the stars and never coming back. Those who came back, were called udidekile ngokomqondo or insane ones. They were feared and worshipped for hundreds of years» he adds.

Former Pope warns of Vatican Alien Agenda

 Former pope Benedict XVI spread consternation in the catholic world as he claimed in a press conference rebroadcasted live on FM german catholic radio station, Radio Horeb, that a group of  jesuits had infiltrated the Vatican and were pursuing what he called an “alien agenda”.

The first pope to retire from his position in 598 years expressed his feelings of deception as “a sinister group of members of the Vatican”  were pushing on for the search for extra-terrestrial life through their Lucifer 2 Large Binocular Telescope based at Vatican Observatory on Mt. Graham in Tucson, USA.

The Vatican made front news earlier this month when José Gabriel Funes, an Argentine Jesuit priest and astronomer, and the current director of the Vatican Observatory, sponsored a major conference in collaboration with NASA entitled The Search for Life Beyond the Solar System: Exoplanets, Biosignatures & Instruments and announced the purchase of a new 2 M$ lens for its Lucifer 2 Large Binocular Telescope.

“Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, there can be other beings, even intelligent, created by God. This is not in contrast with our faith because we can’t put limits on God’s creative freedom. Why can’t we speak of a ‘brother extraterrestrial’? It would still be part of creation” answered Vatican Observatory director, José Gabriel Funes, when asked about the role of extra-terrestrial life in the catholic faith.

Egypt: Archaeologist Could Have Discovered the Tomb of Alexander the Great

Alexandria| A team of archaeologists and historians from the Polish Center of Archaeology, that were conducting some research in the crypt of an ancient christian church, have revealed a mausoleum made of marble and gold that could well be the long lost tomb of Alexander III of Macedon,  who went down in history as Alexander the Great. 

The site is situated in an area known as Kom el-Dikka in the heart of downtown Alexandria, only 60 meters away from Mosque of Nebi Daniel, where Arabic tradition maintained the tomb was to be found and where many excavations had already been conducted

A famous site of pilgrimage in Antiquity, the tomb is notably known to have been visited by many Roman emperors, including Julius Caesar and Gaius Octavius, better known as Augustus, who is said to have placed flowers on the tomb and a golden diadem upon Alexander’s mummified head. The last recorded visit to the tomb was made by the Roman emperor Caracalla in A.D. 215, less than a century before it disappears from Roman records. 

The large monument, apparently sealed off and hidden in the 3rd or 4th century AD, possibly to protect it from the christian repression and destruction of pagan sites after the change of official religion within the Roman Empire. The entire site is a testimony to the multicultural nature of Alexander’s empire, combining artistic and architectural influences from both Greek, Egyptian, Macedonian and Persian origins. The inscriptions, mostly in greek, but including also a few egyptian hieroglyphs, mention that the Mausoleum is dedicated to the “King of Kings, and Conqueror of the World, Alexander III”.

It held a broken sarcophagus made of crystal glass, possibly damaged during the looting that took place during the political disturbances that ravaged Alexandria during the reign of Aurelian shortly after A.D. 270. It also held 37 bones, mostly broken or heavily damaged,  presumably all from the same adult male. A carbon-dating analysis is already under way to determine the age of the bones, and a battery of other tests also await to determine if the bones could be those of the Macedonian king. Other than that, the site held only a small number of artefacts, mostly broken pottery, dating mostly from the Ptolemaic and Roman eras.

The Egyptian Supreme Council for Antiquities had already officially recognized more than 140 unsuccessful searches for the site of Alexander’s third and final resting place, built by Ptolemy Philadelphus around 280 BC. Many astounding theories had been elaborated by various historians to explain the fact that the archeological excavations had come up empty-handed. Some historians had even evoked the possibility that his body could have been unintentionally stolen from Alexandria by a pair of Venetian merchants, taken to Venice, mistakenly renamed and venerated as St. Mark the Evangelist in Basilica di San Marco (Venice, Italy).

The actual facts however, seem to have been a lot closer to what had been corroborated by many authors of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, such as Plutarch,  Ibn ‘Abd al-Hakam, Al-Massoudi and Leo the African. In 321 BC, on its way back to Macedonia, the funerary cart with Alexander’s body was hijacked in Syria by one of his generals, Ptolemy I Soter.  Ptolemy then diverted the body to Egypt where it was interred in Memphis, the center of Alexander’s government in Egypt. Then, in the late 4th or early 3rd century BC, Alexander’s body was transferred from Memphis to Alexandria, where it was reburied.

By the fourth century A.D., the tomb’s location was no longer known, if one can trust the accounts of several of the early Church Fathers. However, creditable Arab commentators, including Ibn Abd al-Hakam (A.D. 871), Al-Massoudi (A.D. 944), and Leo the African (sixteenth century A.D.) all report having seen the tomb of Alexander, but none of them specified its exact location.

This new discovery by the Polish Center could certainly be one the most important ever made in the country, despite the already immense wealth of archeological treasures it has yielded. The site itself is a masterpiece of architechture and craftsmanship, and containing many possible new details about the great king. Should the bones turn out to be those of Alexander, the importance of this incredible find would certainly skyrocket, making it one of the greatest in history of archeology, if not the greatest.

UFO video captured in Alberta, Canada

A man in Alberta was driving with a co-worker when they spotted some strange lights in the sky. They caught it on video and took some pictures before it made a strange sound, causing them to retreat to the car where they found the radio was not working and most of their pictures were gone.

This sightings was reported to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), and was posted on the Huffington Post by MUFON’s Communications Director Roger Marsh. The witnesses were driving From Hinton east to Edson, about 150 miles east of Edmonton. It was about 1:45 am when the driver noticed some green and red blinking lights just above the tree line in the distance.

They didn’t take notice at first. They assumed it was just a low flying airplane. However, as they got closer they noticed the object was not moving and it appeared to be very large. When they got near the grove of trees the object hovered over they saw that the lights were many different colors, blue, purple, red, green, and pulsated quickly. They also noticed a dome on the bottom of the craft that emitted a “white/yellow” light that illuminated the trees beneath it.

They stopped the truck to take pictures with their phones. They estimated the object was only about 400 feet away at this point, and they said it appeared to be the size of six cars wide. Unfortunately, they had a hard time seeing the object in the screen of their phones. However, the witness took a minute of video and several pictures. The other witness also got some pictures.

The witness decided to try and use the flash on the phone’s camera to see if the object would respond. The first flash didn’t seem to cause any reaction. However, when they witness flashed again, the object emitted a “high pitch 2 tone sound lasting for maybe 7 seconds.”

This scared the two, so they got back in the car. They had been listening to a Hinton radio station. However, the radio was now just static. They assumed this had to do with the UFO. They felt it was about time they got out of there, so they got back on the road.

Later, they noticed that their phones also must have been affected. Although they had taken several pictures, only one remained. The video was also supposed to be a minute long, but it was only 8 seconds.

The witness says, “This by far was the weirdest and most interesting experience I have ever had.”

We were coming back from late night work coming from Hinton AB on HWY 16 coming towards Edson, AB where it happened about 4 kilometers before town of Marlobo heading east.

While driving I noticed on the north side of the highway green and red lights low with in treeline, it was 1:45 am and it was very dark, the trees are bare no leaves as this is early spring here so I thought it was low flying airplane as they carry the Green and Red light, I thought I’ve seen an airplane flying low on the horizon through the trees.

As I was getting closer I noticed these lights were not moving and they appeared bigger, it was nothing of significance to us as we thought it was perhaps some sort of tower…

Finally we passed the small grove of trees and were able to have the direct visual on these lights, we’ve seen red, green, blue / purple light blinking sort of pulsating around quite fast, there was also a light at the bottom like a dome light rotating a beam of white/ yellow light illuminating ground and trees.

We stopped the truck and parked on the shoulder looking at this thing and wondering what are we seeing, we got out of the truck to snap some photos with our cell phones, the truck was put on park idling with radio playing – local Hinton music radio station, we were in front of that thing with in 400 ft distance as it was just above the trees across the highway right in front of us, it was very dark and the lights it was projecting were very bright sort of blinding us, we tried to catch this object on the camera but you could not see it in the lcd display.

I snapped 2 pictures without flash to see if I could capture something as I was looking through the pics my friend yelled that the object moved to the right abruptly, I set up my cell phone on vide record mode and recorded the event, I finally could see the object if I zoomed on it all the way although this object was 300-400 ft in front of us fairly large maybe 6 cars wide, I could hardly see it on my cell phone cam. I recorded about a minute of video, and we honestly got a bit freaked out , but I wanted to see it move, so we stayed a bit longer and I noticed that the object drifted slowly to the left, I then thought that maybe that thing is projecting the lights maybe I should use cell cam flash to signal a couple flashes as a form of communication , I got my phone again I snapped once and nothing happened, but when I sent the next flash that thing suddenly made a high pitch 2 tone sound lasting for maybe 7 seconds, we got afraid a bit so we jumped back in the truck and decided it was time to go…, what we noticed inside the cab was a static noise of the radio, where we pulled over to investigate the object, we were listening to Hinton music station , now there was nothing but static noise, upon that we realized we just seen UFO wich interacted with the truck’s radio, we took off rather fast leaving that thing behind , it did not attempt to follow us or either left, it just sat there over the trees.

We were quite disturbed, it was mine and my co-workers first time witnessing ufo event especially that close , we talked about that all the way to Edmonton, we stopped in Edson to have a look at the photos and to our surprise we hardly had any photos on the phones…, I shot 4 pictures in total made about a minute long video all I have on my phone is one picture and 8 seconds video, my friend shot over 6 photos, his phone did not record a single photo.

This by far was the weirdest and most interesting experience I have ever had.

Earliest-known images of Jesus found in Egyptian tomb?

Spanish scientists have discovered what could be one of the earliest-known images of Jesus Christ, painted on the walls of a mysterious underground structure in an ancient Egyptian tomb.

A team of archaeologists led by Josep Padro from the Catalan Egyptology Society (SCE) has unearthed a mystery underground structure in buried tombs, which date back to the 6th and 7th centuries, in the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus.

The structure is decorated with Coptic images – or paintings by a group who number among the earliest Christians – and may contain one of the earliest-known representations of Jesus Christ.

Padro, who has spent over 20 years excavating sites in the area, described the discovery to La Vanguardia newspaper as “exceptional”.

Padro said the underground stone structure was “incredibly good, but we don’t know what it is”.

According to The Local, the archaeologists found “five or six coats of paint on the walls, the last of which was from the Coptic period of the first Christians.”

Among the plant motifs and inscriptions was the “figure of a young man, with curly hair, dressed in a short tunic and with his hand raised as if giving a blessing,” according to Padro.

“We could be dealing with a very early image of Jesus Christ,” he added.

A team is now translating the inscriptions surrounding the figure.

The Egyptian ministry will take responsibility for developing the archaeological site, which was discovered by a joint team from the CSE and the University of Barcelona. – Business-Standard

Ghost Sex?

A Ukranian-born actress is scaring up lots of publicity after making this outrageous claim: She’s had sex with a ghost — twice.

Natasha Blasick made the spirited confession Tuesday morning on British TV show This Morning and said she found the experiences “really, really pleasurable.”

The first experience happened when she was alone in her room.

“I was laying in bed and then I felt something enter the room and I couldn’t see anybody,” she said, according to the Mirror. “I could feel that somebody was touching me and the hands were pushing me against my will and I could feel the weight of the body on top of me.

“I couldn’t see anybody but I could feel the pressure, the energy, the warmth pushing in different directions.”

She added: “I enjoyed it.”

The ghost then left, but Blasick said it returned a month later for more, the New York Daily News reports.

Although Blasick is married, she said her ghost sex antics have given her something more than traditional nookie ever could.

“It was fun. I think ever since I was a child I always wanted to know if there is anything more to this world, I was always asking the questions, and I think this made me feel kind of reassured that there is something more than what we can see with the naked eye,” she said, according to DigitalSpy.com. “It gave me comfort and support and love, and it did answer questions for me that there is something else out there.”

Blasick isn’t the first performer to extol the virtues of ghost sex.

In September, Kesha revealed to Ryan Seacrest that a randy romp with a male ghost helped give birth to her new song, “Supernatural.”

“It’s about experiences with the supernatural… but in a sexy way,” she told Seacrest. “I had a couple of experiences with the supernatural. I don’t know his name! He was a ghost! I’m very open to it.”

Claims like Blasick’s arouse skepticism from paranormal experts.

Alexandra Holzer, a ghost researcher and HuffPost blogger, says people who experience ghost sex don’t feel “warmth” of the kind that Blasick alleges.

“The people who report having sex with a ghost report feeling pressure on them and even penetration, but ghosts don’t have warmth,” Holzer told HuffPost. “When they’re in the room, it’s a very cold environment.” – THP

Beacon Dental Care on Pickersleigh Road is set to be transformed from Heartbreak Hotel to Toothache Hotel for one day only as staff dress up to remember the King and take charge of his very own crown.

The reason for the Elvis Presley-themed event on Wednesday (April 30) is both the 60th anniversary of his first hit That’s All Right and to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

The practice will take temporary charge of the King’s Crown – a model of Elvis Presley’s teeth together with the genuine crown made for the star by former Memphis dentist Henry J Weiss.

Elvis’ legendary music will be played in the waiting room.

Dentist Dr Karen Sutton says the day has a serious message behind it, raising awareness of mouth cancer with free mouth screenings on offer.

“Beacon Dental Care is thrilled to have been selected to be one of only a dozen dentists in the UK to host the prized object which is on loan for a day,” said Dr Sutton.

It is believed Elvis had toothache shortly before his death in August 1977 having visited a dentist the night before.

Elvis’ crown was bought in auction in February 2012 for $11,000 by Michael Zuk, a Canadian author, dentist and obsessive collector of celebrity teeth. Five people a day are reported to die in the United Kingdom from mouth cancer. – Malvern Gazette

Family Gift…or Curse?

The first time I experienced anything paranormal I was 5 years old. Of course, at the time I had no clue what was going on, or whether it was a normal occurrence for people.

I always kept my bedroom door open so the light from the bathroom could shine in and I wasn’t in complete darkness. One night I was up secretly reading when I should have been asleep and it was the first time I saw her. I remember all the sudden I was overcome with a fear and dread that I had never experienced before. I also felt I was being watched. I glanced to the doorway and there stood someone. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a little girl, like me. She was probably around 8 years old, was wearing a dirty long dark colored dress, she had long brown hair that hung slightly into her face, and oddly, she looked wet all over. I was confused. Why would some random girl come into my house? Why was she wet? Why are her parents letting her out this late? Normally, seeing another girl I would have spoken to her and asked if she wanted to play or something of that nature, but the fear I had wouldn’t allow it. I just stared at her. She slowly lifted her head and glanced at me and I saw she was very pale, had dark eyes and dark circles under them. She then raised her arm almost robotic like, with twitchy sort of movements, and started moving her index finger in the “come here” motion.

Even at 5 years old I listened to the voice in my head and my gut telling me not to follow her. I covered my head with my blanket because as everyone knows, nothing can harm you or see you when you are under the shield of your “invisibility cloak”.

I woke up the next day and told my mom about the girl. She shrugged it off and said I was probably dreaming. I accepted that, it was possible, but I had never had a nightmare before. That night, I laid in bed trying to convince myself it was a dream. I decided to stay up and wait to see if she came back just in case it wasn’t.

She came back.

I knew I wasn’t dreaming this time. I had the exact same terrified feeling as she stood at the door beckoning me to come with her. Again, I hid under my blanket. I didn’t mention it to my mom, but after a week of the girl returning every night I decided to tell my dad.

He nodded his head as I told him and told me he was going to let me in on a little secret. He told me that his side of the family has a “gift”, or as some of his family call it a “curse.” That confused me so I asked him what he meant. He explained that he had the ability to see and speak to people who aren’t alive anymore. I understood somewhat, but still was confused how he could do that. He told me his mother had the ability to hear them and her mother could hear, sense, feel emotions and communicate with them. He said from what I’ve told him, it seems as if I had the abilities of his grandmother, as I could feel what they felt and if they were good or bad as well as see them. He told me if I ever have that bad feeling to listen to it, as it is a gift and won’t let me be fooled by “nice faces”. I took his advice to heart.

That little girl visited me every night, no matter what room I was in (only in my house though) until I turned 10 years old. At 10, I finally had the courage to tell her to leave me alone.

I just remember so vividly how she would always try to get me to follow her. I know you will probably think I’m making this up or crazy for this next statement, but sometimes she even had a dollar (or what looked like a dollar) waving it in her hand trying to get me to follow her (I know it sounds insane, but I swear to you on my life she did). Of course I was curious as to what she wanted to show me, but my dads words and my feelings about her always kept me from going with her.

When I was older, I asked my mother about the little girl. Her face became pale and she just looked at me. She asked almost as if it were a disease, “You have it too, don’t you?” I told her yes and she proceeded to tell me to never tell her when I saw or heard things unless they were threatening to harm someone or give her message. I agreed. She proceeded to tell me that a very long time ago, there was a man and his wife that lived there with two children, a boy and a girl. She said the two children died by drowning in the well and that it was ruled accidental, but everyone suspected the father had murdered them.
I tried looking it up, but they live so far out in the country, its hard to place the address back then.

Star Wars ‘Tatooine’ Film Sets

The witness was watching the sky to the south of his mobile home when he saw a large saucer shaped craft slowly proceed down and just above the trees from east to west. He followed it with his eyes as it passed just before him about 100 ft away. It then settled silently in the corner of the next field about 1500 ft away. The witness walked over to where he saw it land…it was a clear, cool, moonlit night. He took no flashlight or camera and felt no fear. He easily found the craft as a very bright light shone from beneath it at the far southeast corner of the field.  As he approached about 20 ft from the craft he noticed an individual in the light from the bottom of the craft directly before him. The human-like figure appeared to have on a form fitting white suit. The eyes were covered in what appeared to be goggles or protective bubbles of tinted glass or plastic, he then noticed a second similar figure to his right only about 6 ft away. The witness was a bit startled, as he did not notice the approach of the figure. However his attention returned to the figure standing near the object by the light. This figure was busily attempting to catch a grasshopper; he held what appeared to be a glass sample container in his right hand and a stopper type lid in the other. He emitted a strange type of giggle as he finally caught the grasshopper. The figure in the trees rejoined this one carrying a sample jar as well. In it the witness could clearly see in the light that it contained a sprig from an oak tree with leaves and acorns attached. They were both about 5 ft tall and lean.  The witness then heard a sound of someone walking through the field of drying corn just to the south and behind him. It was a slow, steady type of walking sound, which someone would make walking on a field of dry grass. As it approached it stopped and then sped up as it walked around the witness. Into the light of the craft then appeared another figure in the same type of suit. He also carried a sample jar. The jars were about 4 inches around and about 15 inches tall with wide mouths and black stopper caps. In this jar he had an ear of the corn. The third arrival hastily pointed out the witness to the other two as they all looked directly at him. He could only smile and wave, and then turn slowly and walk back to his home. The craft hovered silently about 4 ft off the ground. Nothing protruded from it except the bright light from an opening in the bottom. The opening was about 4 ft in width. He could see no stairs leading up to the opening. The witness did not see the object depart.  NOTE: The above image is a rendering.

Space Plane X-37B Mystery Mission Gets Increasingly Stranger

With more than 500 days in orbit, the third mission of the mysterious X-37B spaceplane is not only longer than any previous flight, but also much stranger.The X-37B is a robotic spacecraft launched by the US Air Force on a secret mission that has generally eluded boffins and analysts. It’s not unusual for nations to launch secret spacecraft, but it’s often the case that their true missions can be deduced. The size of the rocket, the orbit and other factors can give analysts clues that a certain satellite is an optical spy satellite, a radar observation satellite or a classified communications satellite.

Knowing that the secrecy is sometimes just a formality, some missions have patches that hint at their true missions, like owl’s eyes and large mesh arrays with the motto “We own the night”. Suspicions that this was a radar observation satellite that could see targets in the dark were confirmed.

No such clues have been dropped for X-37B. Part of its mission is known, thanks to US Air Force statements and the fact that X-37B was once a civilian project operated by NASA. This is an experimental spaceplane designed to test new technologies, ranging from “robot pilot” avionics to an advanced heatshield system. Photography of the exterior of this spaceplane has been extensive, both before and after landing.

There’s more mystery surrounding what lies inside. X-37B features a small shuttle-like payload bay in its middle, with clamshell doors that open in space. We know that there’s a solar panel inside that unfurls from a mast once the X-37B is in orbit. But there’s room for other items too. Exactly what else is inside, and what it’s doing, has confounded the media and the space community.

This analyst has suggested that X-37B is conducting mundane but critical tests of electromechanical components intended for future US national security satellites. The parts are operated in open space for long periods then returned to Earth for study. Other analysts have suggested that the vehicle is conducting a semi-operational mission that involves the use of sensors for Earth observation.

The fact that the X-37B isn’t the most ideal platform for a spy satellite could be an advantage: There’s a cover story for the real mission. Most theories have their pros and cons. Amazingly, nothing has been conclusively proved, disproved, or favoured above all other theories. The cloak of secrecy is compounded by a lack of clear deduction. This is indeed mysterious, even by the normal standards of classified “black” space missions.

The highly extended mission hints that there’s more than mundane testing on this flight. Perhaps components that were undergoing testing on previous flights are now on a true operational mission. Or perhaps we are witnessing a long endurance run to prove that certain critical satellite parts can work reliably for a long-duration spy satellite. Both theories are plausible.

Adding to the confusion, nobody knows when the X-37B will come back. Will it attempt to stay in orbit for 18 months? Will it go even longer? It’s possible that even its mission controllers don’t know for sure at this stage.

Local encounters with the unknown

Have you seen a UFO? Have you ever encountered anything you couldn't explain? Have you ever had an experience that made you feel like you were in an episode of "The X-Files" or "The Twlight Zone?"

If so, hopefully you didn't miss the library's recent presentation from the co-director of the Cleveland Ufology Project.

Thomas Wertman, also chief field investigator for the Mutual UFO Network, raised a number of local cases during his "Encounters with the Unknown Presentation" April 8 at Pierce-Streetsboro Library, which was attended by about 35 people.

Cleveland Ufology Project is the oldest UFO organization in the world, starting in 1952. The group investigates UFOs and other relating occurrences.

Wertman discussed local and unexplained encounters such as crop circles and unidentified objects. Wertman said he's pursued many investigations of his own to find the truth behind these strange occurrences.

"I like to keep it real," Wertman said. "When you turn on the TV at night, you get a multitude of shows that are pretty good, and then there are some that take some artistic liberties and change a few things because of Hollywood. I tend to try to keep things as real as I can out there. My main thing is investigations."

Wertman said over 1,000 reports of UFOs and other strange encounters have been made in Ohio since January 2009, but he estimates about 80 percent of cases can be explained. Often, people mistake airplanes, planets and even Chinese lanterns for unidentified objects. He said Venus and Pluto are often mistaken for UFOs.

However, Wertman said he's investigated and researched a number of cases that still cannot be explained, including a UFO sighting that occurred in the '90s reported by a number of people in Trumbull County.

"I always like to look at airports and other things in close proximity," Wertman said. "You have the Youngstown airport close by, and the Youngstown airbase does have National Guard units out there. You have to be open-minded about it."

After Liberty Township Police Department dispatch received many calls, an officer, Toby Melero, finally left to investigate a rural portion of the area. He was driving down a  country road, when everything mechanical and electrical in his vehicle failed. He attempted to call the station on his radio, but it wasn't functioning.

After exiting his vehicle, Melero looked up and saw he was below a massive structure that Wertman said he described as being about 100 feet across. Melero got back in his vehicle and was finally able to start it.

Wertman said a former Youngstown Airport public relations officer denied any UFOs near the airport.

Wertman presented another case that is left unsolved: an intricate crop circle in Chillicothe. Wertman and other investigators visited a farmer's corn field that the crop circle was engraved in. The crop design was made up of a number of circles creating an odd design.

The crop circle was estimated to be 350 feet across, Wertman said. He does not believe humans with boards could create the crop circle considering about five acres were flattened in the process, and it appeared the crop would have to be bent by hand in order to create the bends in the corn stalk.

When Wertman and fellow investigators inspected the crop circle and found the flattened circles making up the overall design alternated between clockwise and counterclockwise formations. The joints on the corn stocks also appeared to be expanded as if some sort of radiation blew them out, causing the stocks to bend and fall.

Wertman and his team conducted a number of experiments on the crop circle but cannot explain its existence today. The farmer erased the design in the process of harvesting the corn. Wertman said the farmer did not want media attention and unwelcome visitors on his land.

Ohio ranks within the top five states nationally for the occurrence of crop circles, Wertman said. He continues to respond and investigate strange occurrences.

TIME Travel, Dr Michio Kaku Explains

In H.G. Wells’ novel, The Time Machine, our protagonist jumped into a special chair with blinking lights, spun a few dials, and found himself catapulted several hundred thousand years into the future, where England has long disappeared and is now inhabited by strange creatures called the Morlocks and Eloi. That may have made great fiction, but physicists have always scoffed at the idea of time travel, considering it to be the realm of cranks, mystics, and charlatans, and with good reason.

However, rather remarkable advances in quantum gravity are reviving the theory; it has now become fair game for theoretical physicists writing in the pages of Physical Review magazine. One stubborn problem with time travel is that it is riddled with several types of paradoxes. For example, there is the paradox of the man with no parents, i.e. what happens when you go back in time and kill your parents before you are born? Question: if your parents died before you were born, then how could you have been born to kill them in the first place?

There is also the paradox of the man with no past. For example, let’s say that a young inventor is trying futilely to build a time machine in his garage. Suddenly, an elderly man appears from nowhere and gives the youth the secret of building a time machine. The young man then becomes enormously rich playing the stock market, race tracks, and sporting events because he knows the future. Then, as an old man, he decides to make his final trip back to the past and give the secret of time travel to his youthful self. Question: where did the idea of the time machine come from?

There is also the paradox of the man who is own mother (my apologies to Heinlein.) “Jane” is left at an orphanage as a foundling. When “Jane” is a teenager, she falls in love with a drifter, who abandons her but leaves her pregnant. Then disaster strikes. She almost dies giving birth to a baby girl, who is then mysteriously kidnapped. The doctors find that Jane is bleeding badly, but, oddly enough, has both sex organs. So, to save her life, the doctors convert “Jane” to “Jim.”

“Jim” subsequently becomes a roaring drunk, until he meets a friendly bartender (actually a time traveler in disguise) who wisks “Jim” back way into the past. “Jim” meets a beautiful teenage girl, accidentally gets her pregnant with a baby girl. Out of guilt, he kidnaps the baby girl and drops her off at the orphanage. Later, “Jim” joins the time travelers corps, leads a distinguished life, and has one last dream: to disguise himself as a bartender to meet a certain drunk named “Jim” in the past. Question: who is “Jane’s” mother, father, brother, sister, grand- father, grandmother, and grandchild?

Not surprisingly, time travel has always been considered impossible. After all, Newton believed that time was like an arrow; once fired, it soared in a straight, undeviating line. One second on the earth was one second on Mars. Clocks scattered throughout the universe beat at the same rate. Einstein gave us a much more radical picture. According to Einstein, time was more like a river, which meandered around stars and galaxies, speeding up and slowing down as it passed around massive bodies. One second on the earth was Not one second on Mars. Clocks scattered throughout the universe beat to their own distant drummer.

However, before Einstein died, he was faced with an embarrassing problem. Einstein’s neighbor at Princeton, Kurt Goedel, perhaps the greatest mathematical logician of the past 500 years, found a new solution to Einstein’s own equations which allowed for time travel! The “river of time” now had whirlpools in which time could wrap itself into a circle. Goedel’s solution was quite ingenious: it postulated a universe filled with a rotating fluid. Anyone walking along the direction of rotation would find themselves back at the starting point, but backwards in time!

In his memoirs, Einstein wrote that he was disturbed that his equations contained solutions that allowed for time travel. But he finally concluded: the universe does not rotate, it ex- pands (i.e. as in the Big Bang theory) and hence Goedel’s solution could be thrown out for “physical reasons.” (Apparently, if the Big Bang was rotating, then time travel would be possible throughout the universe!)

Then in 1963, Roy Kerr, a New Zealand mathematician, found a solution of Einstein’s equations for a rotating black hole, which had bizarre properties. The black hole would not collapse to a point (as previously thought) but into a spinning ring (of neutrons). The ring would be circulating so rapidly that centrifugal force would keep the ring from collapsing under gravity. The ring, in turn, acts like the Looking Glass of Alice. Anyone walking through the ring would not die, but could pass through the ring into an alternate universe. Since then, hundreds of other “wormhole” solutions have been found to Einstein’s equations. These wormholes connect not only two regions of space (hence the name) but also two regions of time as well. In principle, they can be used as time machines.

Recently, attempts to add the quantum theory to gravity (and hence create a “theory of everything”) have given us some insight into the paradox problem. In the quantum theory, we can have multiple states of any object. For example, an electron can exist simultaneously in different orbits (a fact which is responsible for giving us the laws of chemistry). Similarly, Schrodinger’s famous cat can exist simultaneously in two possible states: dead and alive. So by going back in time and altering the past, we merely create a parallel universe. So we are changing someone ELSE’s past by saving, say, Abraham Lincoln from being assassinated at the Ford Theater, but our Lincoln is still dead. In this way, the river of time forks into two separate rivers. But does this mean that we will be able to jump into H.G. Wells’ machine, spin a dial, and soar several hundred thousand years into England’s future? No. There are a number of difficult hurdles to overcome.

First, the main problem is one of energy. In the same way that a car needs gasoline, a time machine needs to have fabulous amounts of energy. One either has to harness the power of a star, or to find something called “exotic” matter (which falls up, rather than down) or find a source of negative energy. (Physicists once thought that negative energy was impossible. But tiny amounts of negative energy have been experimentally verified for something called the Casimir effect, i.e. the energy created by two parallel plates). All of these are exceedingly difficult to obtain in large quantities, at least for several more centuries!

Then there is the problem of stability. The Kerr black hole, for example, may be unstable if one falls through it. Similarly, quantum effects may build up and destroy the wormhole before you enter it. Unfortunately, our mathematics is not powerful enough to answer the question of stability because you need a “theory of everything” which combines both quantum forces and gravity. At present, superstring theory is the leading candidate for such a theory (in fact, it is the ONLY candidate; it really has no rivals at all). But superstring theory, which happens to be my specialty, is still to difficult to solve completely. The theory is well-defined, but no one on earth is smart enough to solve it.

Interestingly enough, Stephen Hawking once opposed the idea of time travel. He even claimed he had “empirical” evidence against it. If time travel existed, he said, then we would have been visited by tourists from the future. Since we see no tourists from the future, ergo: time travel is not possible. Because of the enormous amount of work done by theoretical physicists within the last 5 years or so, Hawking has since changed his mind, and now believes that time travel is possible (although not necessarily practical). (Furthermore, perhaps we are simply not very interesting to these tourists from the future. Anyone who can harness the power of a star would consider us to be very primitive. Imagine your friends coming across an ant hill. Would they bend down to the ants and give them trinkets, books, medicine, and power? Or would some of your friends have the strange urge to step on a few of them?)

In conclusion, don’t turn someone away who knocks at your door one day and claims to be your future great-great-great grandchild. They may be right.
