Trey Mack, a graduate student in astronomy at Vanderbilt University, has developed a model that estimates the effect that such a diet has on a star’s chemical composition and has used it to analyze a pair of twin stars which both have their own planets. The results of the study were published online on May 7 in the Astrophysical Journal.
“Trey has shown that we can actually model the chemical signature of a star in detail, element by element, and determine how that signature is changed by the ingestion of Earth-like planets,” said Vanderbilt Professor of Astronomy Keivan Stassun, who supervised the study. “After obtaining a high-resolution spectrum for a given star,
This ability will add substantially to astronomers’ understanding of the process of planet formation as well as assisting in the ongoing search for Earth-like exoplanets, according to the astronomers.
First, some background: Stars consist of more than 98 percent hydrogen and helium. All the other elements make up less than 2 percent of their mass. Astronomers have arbitrarily defined all the elements heavier than hydrogen and helium as metals and have coined the term “metallicity” to refer to the ratio of the relative abundance of iron to hydrogen in a star’s chemical makeup.
Since the mid-1990′s, when astronomers developed the capability to detect extrasolar planets in large numbers, there have been several studies that attempt to link star metallicity with planet formation. In one such study, researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory argued that stars with high metallicity are more likely to develop planetary systems than those with low metallicity. Another study concluded that hot Jupiter-sized planets are found predominantly circling stars with high metallicity while smaller planets are found circling stars with a wide range of metal content.
Building on the work of coauthor Simon Schuler of the University of Tampa, who expanded the examination of stars’ chemical composition beyond their iron content, Mack looked at the abundance of 15 specific elements relative to that of the Sun. He was particularly interested in elements like aluminum, silicon, calcium and iron that have melting points higher than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit (600 degrees Celsius) because these are the refractory materials that serve as building blocks for Earth-like planets.

Mack, Schuler and Stassun decided to apply this technique to the planet-hosting binary pair designated HD 20781 and HD 20782. Both stars should have condensed out of the same cloud of dust and gas and so both should have started with the same chemical compositions. This particular binary pair is the first one discovered where both stars have planets of their own.
Both of the stars in the binary pair are G-class dwarf stars similar to the Sun. One star is orbited closely by two Neptune-size planets. The other possesses a single Jupiter-size planet that follows a highly eccentric orbit. The difference in their planetary systems make the two stars ideal for studying the connection between exoplanets and the chemical composition of their stellar hosts.
When they analyzed the spectrum of the two stars the astronomers found that the relative abundance of the refractory elements was significantly higher than that of the Sun. They also found that the higher the melting temperature of a particular element, the higher was its abundance, a trend that serves as a compelling signature of the ingestion of Earth-like rocky material. They calculated that each of the twins would have had to consume an additional 10-20 Earth-masses of rocky material to produce the chemical signatures. Specifically, the star with the Jupiter-sized planet appears to have swallowed an extra ten Earth masses while the star with the two Neptune-sized planets scarfed down an additional 20.
The results support the proposition that a star’s chemical composition and the nature of its planetary system are linked.
“Imagine that the star originally formed rocky planets like Earth. Furthermore, imagine that it also formed gas giant planets like Jupiter,” said Mack. “The rocky planets form in the region close to the star where it is hot and the gas giants form in the outer part of the planetary system where it is cold. However, once the gas giants are fully formed, they begin to migrate inward and, as they do, their gravity begins to pull and tug on the inner rocky planets.
“With the right amount of pulling and tugging, a gas giant can easily force a rocky planet to plunge into the star. If enough rocky planets fall into the star, they will stamp it with a particular chemical signature that we can detect.”
Following this logic, it is unlikely that either of the binary twins possesses terrestrial planets. On one star, the two Neptune-sized planets are orbiting the star quite closely, at one-third the distance between Earth and the Sun. On the other star the trajectory of the Jupiter-sized planet grazes the star, taking it closer than orbit of Mercury at the point of closest approach. The astronomers speculate that the reason the star with the two Neptune-size planets ingested more terrestrial material than its twin was because the two planets were more efficient at pushing material into their star than the single Jupiter-sized planet was at pushing material into its star.
If the chemical signature of G-class stars that swallow rocky planets proves to be universal, “when we find stars with similar chemical signatures, we will be able to conclude that their planetary systems must be very different from our own and that they most likely lack inner rocky planets,” said Mack. “And when we find stars that lack these signatures, then they are good candidates for hosting planetary systems similar to our own.”
Added Stassun: “This work reveals that the question of whether and how stars form planets is actually the wrong thing to ask. The real question seems to be how many of the planets that a star makes avoid the fate of being eaten by their parent star?”

Each month a new planet is discovered that bears similarities to our own – and it is becoming increasingly apparent Earth is not unique. So it stands to reason that of the billions of Earth-like planets in our galaxy alone, there might be another that hosts life.
It’s a thought that is gaining more credence all the time, and now Nasa has released a fascinating book detailing how, or if, we might communicate with some of these worlds. Some of the most interesting chapters tackle the issue of alien communication in the past, present and future.
‘If a radio signal is detected in a modern Seti experiment, we could well know that another intelligence exists, but not know what they are saying,’ he writes in the book’s introduction. He goes on to add: ‘Even if we detect a civilisation circling one of our nearest stellar neighbours, its signals will have traversed trillions of miles, reaching Earth after travelling for years.’
But, all hope is not lost – throughout the book Vakoch and his colleagues tackle these very problems, and provide solutions that may prove invaluable in the future. ‘To move beyond the mere detection of such intelligence, and to have any realistic chance of comprehending it, we can gain much from the lessons learned by researchers facing similar challenges on Earth,’ he continues.
‘Like archaeologists who reconstruct temporally distant civilisations from fragmentary evidence, Seti researchers will be expected to reconstruct distant civilisations separated from us by vast expanses of space as well as time.
‘As we attempt to decode and interpret extraterrestrial messages, we will be required to comprehend the mindset of a species that is radically Other.’ Elsewhere in the compendium the authors tackle the question of the possible biology, evolution and physics of an extraterrestrial race.
Vakoch explains how the methods via which aliens communicate might be vastly different from our own, making contact difficult. He says that messaging through sound, as we are used to on Earth, might not be possible.
‘On the other hand, vision and the use of images would appear to be at least plausible,’ he writes.
And, he adds, imaging the surface of habitable planets in the future might reveal ‘the physical arrangement of objects’ that suggests the presence of alien life. Edmondson suggests, for example, that ‘an optical telescope of diameter 620 miles (1,000 miles) could resolve an object of diameter one kilometre (0.62 miles) at a distance of 100 light-years.’
Vakoch concludes his introduction with the monumental task awaiting scientists and scholars across the world, but highlights the importance of these studies and research. ‘These scholars are grappling with some of the enormous challenges that will face humanity if an information-rich signal emanating from another world is detected,’ he writes.
‘By drawing on issues at the core of contemporary archaeology and anthropology, we can be much better prepared for contact with an extraterrestrial civilisation, should that day ever come.’

Documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden conclusively prove that the United States has been ruled by a race of tall, white space aliens who also assisted the rise of Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
These revelations about our alien overlords might not cost you any sleep. But the part that should concern you a tad is that the UFO story was just published by the Fars News Agency, the English-language news service of Iran, a nation that may be very close to acquiring nuclear weapons.
This being a crazy conspiracy theory, naturally the Russians are behind it. The alleged alien invasion was revealed in an alleged report by Russia’s FSB spy agency, which found “incontrovertible proof’ that an ‘alien/extraterrestrial intelligence agenda’ is driving U.S. domestic and international policy, and has been doing so since at least 1945,” said the Iranian news service.

Fars apparently got the story from a hard-core conspiracy site called whatdoesitmean.com. Here is the gist of the whatdoesitmean.com story as best I understand it (or as the alien mind-control lasers allow me to understand it):
Snowden, who has been given asylum in Russia, leaked documents that a race of extraterestrial “tall whites” arrived on Earth, helped Nazi Germany build a fleet of advanced submarines in the 1930s, and then met in 1954 with President Dwight Eisenhower “where the ‘secret regime’ currently ruling over America was established.”
“Most disturbingly, this FSB report warns, is that the ‘Tall White’ agenda being implemented by the ‘secret regime’ ruling the United States calls for the creation of a global electronic surveillance system meant to hide all true information about their presence here on earth as they enter into what one of Snowden’s documents calls the ‘final phase’ of their end plan for total assimilation and world rule.”
Meanwhile, the U.S. government is embroiled in a “cataclysmic” power struggle between President Obama, who heads the alien shadow government, and some unknown force that opposed the U.S.-alien alliance. “Most to be feared by Russian policy makers and authorities, this [FSB] report concludes, is if those opposing the ‘Tall White’ ‘secret regime’ ruled over by Obama have themselves aligned with another alien-extraterrestrial power themselves.”
Any good conspiracy theory needs a patina of truth, a bit of intellectual cover to camouflage the craziness. In this case, the whatdoesitmean.com/Fars story cites Paul Hellyer, the 1960s Canadian defense minister who is now a fervent UFO activist.
This is almost a funny story, until one remembers that Iran is a moderately powerful nation of 76 million people, with a possible nuclear arsenal, relatively large conventional military power, extensive terrorist capabilities through its intelligence agencies and Hezbollah, and a fundamentalist government that could easily engage in hostilities against the U.S. Laugh if you will at conspiracy theories, but they offer explanatory value for their believers, a way of making sense of why things happen, even if it is a funhouse-mirror explanation of the world. The Fars News Agency is reportedly affiliated with Iran’s influential Revolutionary Guards, which suggests that either Iran is either desperate to smear the U.S. any way it can, or there indeed is a very peculiar view of U.S. politics at the highest levels of the Iranian government.
If there is a bright spot to this as well as a funny bone, it’s that the goal of U.S. policy is to contain and neutralize Iranian influence. So, perhaps it’s not necessarily a bad thing that Tehran thinks its main adversary is backed by the power of space aliens. It’s good to have friends in high places, even if they have two heads.

Crinoids are echinoderms, like starfish . . . so these are animals! And I’m saying that Opportunity took a photograph on Mars that shows features that are consistent with what we know of crinoids . . . Now, the fascinating thing is here you have a possible fossil of a very interesting organism in a rock on Mars, and three hours and a half after that photograph was done, that rock was destroyed by the rock abrasion tool.

Residents of Barstow, CA are claiming there was an unidentified flying object (UFO) landing on a local highway on Saturday, Dec. 12, which has been sparking internet forum postings. The sighting was called to our attention by a reader Eric. A relative of a witness reported on an internet forum God like productions.com about the sighting Saturday at 1:20 pm EST: “My sister just received a call from her stepson from Barstow who attested that a UFO landed on one of the major highways there (presumeably Interstate 40 or 15). The UFO was surrounded by a team of black cars.
Witnesses are questioning whether this is a Government UFO or the ‘real thing.’ My sister is waiting for a return call from her stepson. I’ll give more details as they arrive.” Today the same person, maya2012, wrote back to the forum after hearing more information from the sister: “Her nephew called today. Apparently, the UFO landed (or crashed) off off the road early in the morning when it was still dark outside. The police and black cars arranged themselves so that their headlights were facing outward, making it difficult for people to see what was happening. My nephew’s coworker took two pictures but they came out somewhat blurry. He stated that you could partially see the UFO in one picture.
My nephew doesn’t have the pictures, his coworker does. We’re still trying to get them. A large military transport was brought in to take the UFO back to the nearby military base.” Whether the UFO was an alien spacecraft or a military plane is unknown. If the UFO claims are true, there will probably be other Barstow residents reporting the sighting soon since it was on a highway. It should be interesting to hear what other people from Barstow have to say about the sighting.
In the city of Barstow, California on December 12, 2009, residents see a low-flying UFO streaking across their neighborhoods. The pre-dawn event included several witnesses seeing the object cross a highway and either land or crash in a deserted area. Some residents decided to follow the path of the object and find out where it was and what had happened to the object.
Soon, they have visitors; a number of SUVs come speeding by, heading straight for the UFO. The residents come close enough to the unknown object to see the SUVs encircling the UFO. Their headlights were pointing away from the object, blinding the onlookers from getting a good view of the scene. Soon, a flatbed truck arrives. About 10 minutes later, the flatbed begins to leave the scene, accompanied by the SUVs. The residents see a tarp-covered object about the size of a VW bug.
Soon, the parade of vehicles is gone, leaving the residents at a loss as to what the object was and how the incident had transpired. Reports were made to local law enforcement and the Air Force, but no information was gleaned from the sources. NOTE: The above image is a rendering
The Higgs boson or Higgs particle is an elementary particle initially theorised in 1964, whose discovery was announced at CERN on 4 July 2012. The discovery has been called “monumental” because it appears to confirm the existence of the Higgs field, which is pivotal to the Standard Model and other theories within particle physics. It would explain why some fundamental particles have mass when the symmetries controlling their interactions should require them to be massless, and why the weak force has a much shorter range than the electromagnetic force. The discovery of a Higgs boson should allow physicists to finally validate the last untested area of the Standard Model’s approach to fundamental particles and forces, guide other theories and discoveries in particle physics, and potentially lead to developments in “new” physics.
This unanswered question in fundamental physics is of such importance that it led to a search of more than 40 years for the Higgs boson and finally the construction of one of the world’s most expensive and complex experimental facilities to date, the Large Hadron Collider, able to create Higgs bosons and other particles for observation and study. On 4 July 2012, it was announced that a previously unknown particle with a mass between 125 and 127 GeV/c2 (134.2 and 136.3 amu) had been detected; physicists suspected at the time that it was the Higgs boson. By March 2013, the particle had been proven to behave, interact and decay in many of the ways predicted by the Standard Model, and was also tentatively confirmed to have positive parity and zero spin, two fundamental attributes of a Higgs boson. This appears to be the first elementary scalar particle discovered in nature. More data is needed to know if the discovered particle exactly matches the predictions of the Standard Model, or whether, as predicted by some theories, multiple Higgs bosons exist.
The Higgs boson is named after Peter Higgs, one of six physicists who, in 1964, proposed the mechanism that suggested the existence of such a particle. Although Higgs’s name has come to be associated with this theory, several researchers between about 1960 and 1972 each independently developed different parts of it. In mainstream media the Higgs boson has often been called the “God particle”, from a 1993 book on the topic; the nickname is strongly disliked by many physicists, including Higgs, who regard it as inappropriate sensationalism. In 2013 two of the original researchers, Peter Higgs and François Englert, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work and prediction Englert’s co-researcher Robert Brout had died in 2011, and except in unusual circumstances, the Nobel is not given posthumously.
In the Standard Model, the Higgs particle is a boson with no spin, electric charge, or color charge. It is also very unstable, decaying into other particles almost immediately. It is a quantum excitation of one of the four components of the Higgs field. The latter constitutes a scalar field, with two neutral and two electrically charged components, and forms a complex doublet of the weak isospin SU symmetry. The field has a “Mexican hat” shaped potential with nonzero strength everywhere (including otherwise empty space) which in its vacuum state breaks the weak isospin symmetry of the electroweak interaction. When this happens, three components of the Higgs field are “absorbed” by the SU and U gauge bosons (the “Higgs mechanism”) to become the longitudinal components of the now-massive W and Z bosons of the weak force. The remaining electrically neutral component separately couples to other particles known as fermions (via Yukawa couplings), causing these to acquire mass as well. Some versions of the theory predict more than one kind of Higgs fields and bosons. Alternative “Higgsless” models would have been considered if the Higgs boson were not discovered.
A team of scientists studying the afterglow of a gamma-ray burst tell us that their findings will re-write scientific theories. Using the Very Large Array Telescope, the team examined the afterglow of a gamma ray burst which mainstream astronomers assume is formed by a so-called shockwave. What they observed does not match the theoretical predictions of the standard model. Wal Thornhill tells listeners how the Electric Universe paradigm would view the findings.
Kudos for those searching for answers about the elongated skulls in Peru. They are unique enough with their interparietal bones (os inca) that prove they were born to be shaped like this – not cradle-boarded.
The os inca bones were found on the “otamid” skull shapes in North America (referred to as primitive shapes) in certain tribes and odd skulls found in moundbuilder areas and Nevada as well as Texas coastline tribes and Baja tribes (see my slope-headed post). Their skulls were elongated looking, sloping forehead, strong brow ridge, and other unusual characteristics that led researchers to call them primitive looking and carnivorous looking. Those who follow my ancient giants posts, know about these red-haired race of robust and tall people compared to other tribes. The dried up lakes like in Nevada's Humboldt Sink and in this location in Peru create ideal conditions for preserving these remains.
Here is a video interview with Brien Foerster who led the mission with other researchers to finally get DNA results on these. It does amaze me that these were not tested by local authorities. But, then, look what happened to the “otamid”skulls in North America.
Brien describes these as robust large jaw, bone is strong and large where neck muscles attached, more powerful and complicated neck muscles, eye orbits bigger than normal, cranial capacity is 25-30% larger than homo sapiens. DNA results so far: Mitochondria – segments do not match anything in GenBank (holds cataloged results of every DNA documented on earth). Segments do not match anything in Homo sapiens and nothing in Neanderthal. This also explains why the skulls are shaped so oddly – they are not related. The skull tested is believed to be at least 2000 years ago as much as 3000 years ago. It might even be older, but researchers hadn't been studying them, assuming that they were cradle-boarded and that their look was cultural.
We already know that the term “Inca bone” came from these skulls of Peru who had interparietal bones naturally from birth, not from cradle boarding. Why did the locals choose to cradle board? My honest observation would be that they wished to look like the “gods,” these people who were much wiser, had advanced knowledge (having evolved earlier and settled the world). It's sort of like kids wanting to smoke to look like grownups or a girl wanting a butt implant to look like a Kardashian.
What might all this mean? It seems to be a step closer to my theory that man first developed from homo erectus lineage in Asia and Indonesia and spread out by land to places like Georgia, France, and the future British Isles and by sea through the South Pacific, to South America and eventually up to North America, way ahead of the homo sapiens who had yet to emerge from Mitochondrial Eve in Africa and leave to spread around the world in the last 100,000 years, coming upon these advanced cultures and getting their jump in knowledge that some desperate researchers would like to attribute to a high protein diet (I understand lions eat a lot of protein too).
There are legends of these giants in all cultures including the Bible and, in fact, those who follow that text would find it reassuring to know that their Lord flooded the world to obliterate this first cannibalistic race in favor of one that showed compassion and intelligence both. When we toss giants into the mix as the original earthly race hundreds of thousands of years before us, suddenly the desperate explanation of ancient aliens playing tinker toys with boulders is finally discarded. As well, human sacrifice might be explained by appeasement to the cannibalistic “gods.” When you stack onto that a unifying universal language adopted around the globe, stone megaliths, metal works, weaving and other technology that happened simultaneously for us homo sapiens as we arrived in giant territory and learned from their already established knowledge, now we're talking seamless explanation. Suddenly, the world makes sense. The greater mystery now is, who were they a lineage of? Several forms of homo erectus hybridized? And, what became of them? War uprising by homo sapiens?
When it comes to the victims of the September 11th, 2001 attacks, we have to stop and ponder whether or not we have treated them with respect and why they continue to be exploited politically and why now they are merchandized like some trinket in a drugstore knickknack isle.
Now, people aren’t so sure about the sacred, because of the money changing going in at ‘ground zero’.
As the Gothamist reported, “The National 9/11 Museum opened to the public [May 21], with dozens of museum employees on hand to assist visitors through exhibits, numerous Red Cross workers and chaplains eager to help those who needed comfort… President Obama dedicated the museum last week in a special ceremony that was by invite only. There were mostly politicians and a few of the victim’s families in attendance.”
But those honored visitors were told to leave because only the VIPs, which included former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, were allowed back inside for a black-tie cocktail reception, the NY Daily news said. It is said later this summer there will be a family restaurant opening up in the facility.
The creepiness here is evident, the cocktail soiree was being held on the site where it is believed many of the victim’s remains are still buried and many people feel that it is also a bit sick to open a restaurant on the site.
The museum’s cocktail hour took place near the “remains repository,” where 8,000 unidentified body parts are being stored.
Again, our censored Gothamist reporter noted: “There’s a warning in front of the entrance, “The exhibition may not be appropriate for visitors 10 years old and younger. Adults accompanying younger visitors should exercise discretion before entering.””
Upon arrival, the scene is set up like a Halloween spook alley in a posh library. Scorched car doors, salvaged firefighters’ uniforms, banners, toys, and a destroyed fire engine are preserved forever and on display at the museum.
The museum itself was designed to look like a fallen and crumples tower as it is set on the ground next to trees and a reflecting pool. Inside the building are numerous columns and beams that did not melt in the extreme heat that the two planes allegedly generated on that day.
In an area that looks like an airport terminal, there are two columns that represent a double trident.
As the official WTC.com site says: “These seven-story steel structures were part of the original façade of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center, once forming the distinctive Gothic arch motif at the base of the skyscrapers. The forked columns are so large that the Museum Pavilion’s structure will be built around them.”
As MythsOfChristianity.com informs: “The three-pronged pitchfork is the trident of Poseidon, the Greek god of water. The trident was a powerful weapon capable of stirring the waters to fury and in the ancient epic, the Odyssey, Poseidon was the foe of the hero Odysseus, constantly wrecking his ships and thwarting his attempts to return home.”
For many centuries, the original symbol of Poseidon and his powerful three-pronged staff eventually evolved into the devil that lived in depths of the earth.
Poseidon has also developed a relationship with the great beast or Leviathan of prophecy that rises from the sea in the final days before judgment.
There have also been comparisons that have already been made to the Holocaust Museum and there have been many complaints about how graphic and horrific it is.
The museum is said to be difficult to walk through and the photographs of the victims are said to be so devastating to people that they turn away either repulsed or emotionally devastated.
The displays are said to be very indicative of the scale of destruction, with the wrecked fire engines and World Trade Center elevator motor, is also distressing. There are audio recordings that are particularly harrowing, including a 911 call from someone on the 106th floor that of course is worried that he is going to die.
In the heart of the museum is a video gallery showing the burning towers news reports and people jumping out of buildings.
There are many people that have many ideas of what this museum is about, and why it was even erected in the first place. The 9/11 Museum is a for-profit museum and it has a gift shop where people say the souvenirs are grim and are in poor taste.
It is a tricky proposal to memorialize a tragedy, but this is really beginning to look like an attempt to turn the 9/11 tragedy into a commodity.
For years, the United States government has used the victims of 9/11 as an excuse to fuel their war efforts and there is really no honor in that little enterprise. As you may already realize, there is some outrage over what is being sold at the gift shop. For $64.00 you can purchase survival tree earrings and $39.00 gets you a hoodie emblazoned with an image of the towers. There is also a collectable cheese plate you can purchase as well.
Victims’ families didn’t ask for this, they didn’t expect their family members to be important deaths for eternity and have their remains in a containment hold piled behind a locked door in a museum that doubles as a mausoleum with an adjacent Shake Shack.
It wasn’t enough that these victims were used for the battle cry to invade Afghanistan and Iraq, now they are bankable for commemorative shirts and hoodies. The building’s ornate design can now be seen on a commemorative necktie and bath towel.
It is also interesting to know that the executives and directors of the 9/11 Museum are making six figure incomes while many family members still are struggling to live day-to-day.
“Schoolchildren thought their penny jars and bake-sale proceeds would go toward building a 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero — not the six-figure salaries of nonprofit execs.
But 11 staffers at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum each pulled down more than $170,000 in total compensation in 2009, according to the most recent filings. Four execs took home more than $320,000.
Foundation President Joseph Daniels, 38, pocketed $371,307 after receiving hefty raises three years in a row — 28 percent in 2006, when he was promoted from acting president, followed by 12 percent and 6 percent.
The money to pay the $5.3 million in compensation for the foundation’s 87 staffers in 2009 came from private donations — $220 million raised in a Herculean grass-roots effort to honor the 2,974 victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and $150 million from blue-ribbon board members. More than 60,000 individuals in all 50 states and 31 countries donated to the cause.”
Now that the museum is open to the public, the hefty salaries are paid through the selling of tchotchkes at a gift shop that has been built over the dead bodies of 9/11 victims.
They say that, “this is America, what do you expect.” I expect a little more dignity and less political pomp and merchandizing at a place that is supposed to be tribute to those who died.
The question is, is this a dignified way to treat the victims of the 9/11 attacks and have we pushed the envelope too far by treating 9/11 like the Jewish holocaust?
It is being called a crass commercial enterprise. The sickness people are feeling as they walk through the museum is not only buffered by the horrors of 9/11, but by the sick sense that that something very evil is taking place upon sacred ground.
Would you have a picnic at a crematorium? Probably not; however, at the 9/11 Museum you can listen to those unbearable last-words-to-loved-ones recordings, look at bloodied shoes and falling-body images – and then eat comfort food and be offered a cocktail.
Would it be prudent to sell to family member’s trinkets made from the pulverized metal and bones at the site? Just as well sell commemorative sausage at the venue, there is nothing to sick or twisted that the museum won’t exploit.

The 2013 Canadian UFO Survey marks the 25th anniversary of collecting and analysing Canadian UFO report data by Ufology Research. A quarter century of quality analysis and commentary on the fascinating field of Canadian Ufology is complete.
Since 1989, Ufology Research (formerly Ufology Research of Manitoba) has solicited UFO case data from known and active investigators and researchers in Canada. The goal has been to provide data for use by researchers trying to understand this controversial phenomenon. No comparable studies are currently produced by any other research group in North America. Similar programs exist in several other countries such as Sweden, where UFO report data is analysed by the Archives for UFO Research, and in Italy by Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici.
The 2013 Canadian UFO Survey: Summary of Results
There were 1,180 UFO sightings reported in Canada in 2013, or about three each day.
The number of cases in 2013 is the second-highest number of UFO sightings recorded in Canada during the last 25 years.
The 1,180 UFO cases reported in 2013 is much less than the peak year of 2012, when almost 2,000 reports were recorded. We suspect this was an anomaly, and likely due to many people excited about the so-called “end of the world” in 2012 according to the Mayan Calendar.
In 2013, Ontario had more than 40 per cent of all Canadian UFO reports.
In 2013, about 14 per cent of all UFO reports were classified as unexplained.
The typical UFO sighting lasted approximately 13 minutes in 2013.
Results of this study show that many people continue to report unusual objects in the sky, and some of these objects do not have obvious explanations. Many witnesses are pilots, police and other individuals with reasonably good observing capabilities and good judgement.
Numbers of reported UFO sightings remain high. Several theories for this can be suggested: more UFOs are present and physically observable by witnesses; more secret or classified military exercises and overflights are occurring over populated areas; more people are unaware of the nature of conventional or natural objects in the sky; more people are taking the time to observe their surroundings; more people are able to report their sightings with easier access to the Internet and portable technology; or even that the downturn in the economy is leading to an increased desire by some people to look skyward for assistance.
Although the largest percentage of reported UFOs is simply lights in the night sky, a small number are objects with definite shapes observed within the witnesses’ frame of reference.
Popular opinion to the contrary, there is no incontrovertible evidence that some UFO cases involve extraterrestrial contact. The continued reporting of UFOs by the public and the yearly increase in numbers of UFO reports suggests a need for further examination of the phenomenon by social, medical and/or physical scientists.
The number of UFO reports per year has varied, although there has been a general trend towards a steady increase in yearly UFO report numbers over 25 years, with spikes in some years such as 1993, 2008 and 2013, when there were almost 2,000 reports in one year. Although there may be a perceived notion that UFOs are not being reported with as much frequency as in the past, this is not true. UFOs have not “gone away.” This data clearly contradicts comments by those who would assert that UFOs are a ‘passing fad’ or that UFO sightings are decreasing.
In 2013, Ontario had about 41 per cent of the total number of UFO sightings reported in Canada, the most reports of any province, and exactly the same percentage as in both 2011 and 2012. British Columbia was second, with about 25 per cent of the total. If UFO reporting was simply a factor of population, one would expect percentages of 37 per cent for Ontario and 13 per cent for BC.
Monthly breakdowns of reports during each year tend to show slightly different patterns. UFO reports are generally thought to peak in summer and are at minimum in winter, presumably due to the more pleasant observing conditions during the summer months, when more witnesses are outside. In Canada in 2013, July and August numbers were again high, but report numbers were unusually high in January as well.
An analysis by report type shows a similar breakdown to that found in previous years. The percentage of cases of a particular type remains roughly constant from year to year, with some variations. Proportionally, Daylight Discs increased significantly in 2013, but most cases still were Nocturnal Lights.
Just under two per cent of all reported UFO cases in 2013 were Close Encounters, emphasizing the reality that very few UFO cases involve anything other than distant objects seen in the sky. This is an important statistic, because the current popular interest in abductions and sensational UFO encounters is based not on the vast majority of UFO cases but on the very tiny fraction of cases which fall into the category of close encounters. Speculation on what aliens may or may not be doing in our airspace seems almost completely unconnected to what are actually being reported as UFOs.
The types of sightings vary in 2013 , a summary follows with totals:
NL (Nocturnal Light) – light source in night sky - 631
ND (Nocturnal Disc) – light source in night sky that appears to have a definite shape - 333
C1 (Close Encounter of the First Kind) – ND or DD occurring within 200 metres of a witness – 9
C2 (Close Encounter of the Second Kind) – C1 where physical effects left or noted – 4
C3 (Close Encounter of the Third Kind) – C1 where figures/entities are encountered – 3
C4 (Close Encounter of the Fourth Kind) – an alleged “abduction” or “contact” experience – 3
The hourly distribution of cases has usually followed a similar pattern every year, with a peak at 2200 hours local and a trough around 0900 hours local. Since most UFOs are nocturnal lights, most sightings will occur during the evening hours. Since the number of possible observers drops off sharply near midnight, we would expect the hourly rate of UFO reports would vary with two factors: potential observers and darkness.
Duration of events is interesting in that it represents the subjective length of time the UFO experience lasted. In other words, this is the length of time the sighting lasted as estimated by the witness. Naturally, these times are greatly suspect because it is known that most people tend to badly misjudge the flow of time. Although an estimate of “one hour” may be in error by several minutes, it is unlikely that the true duration would be, for example, one minute. Furthermore, there have been cases when a UFO was observed and clocked very accurately, so that we can be reasonably certain that UFO events can last considerable periods of time.
The average duration of UFO sightings in Canada in 2013 was 13.5 minutes, similar to 2012 when the average duration was about 15 minutes. These significant lengths of time suggest some simple explanations. Previous analyses have shown that long-duration sightings tend to occur in the early morning hours, from about midnight until 6:00 a.m.
The duration of a sighting is one of the biggest clues to its explanation. Experience in studying UFO reports has shown us that short duration events are usually fireballs or bolides, and long duration events of an hour or more are very probably astronomical objects moving slowly with Earth’s rotation.
In cases where colours of an object were reported by witnesses, the most common colour in 2013 was orange, similar to previous years. The next most common colours were red, white and “multi-coloured.” Since most UFOs are nocturnal starlike objects, the abundance of white objects is not surprising. Colours such as red, orange, blue and green often are associated with bolides (fireballs). Orange is most often associated with the observation of a Chinese lanterns, the launching of which became popular during the past few years. The ‘multicoloured’ designation is problematic in that it literally covers a wide range of possibilities. This label has been used, for example, when witnesses described their UFOs as having white, red and green lights. Many of these are certainly stars or planets, which flash a variety of colours when seen low on the horizon. Aircraft also frequently are described as having more than one colour of light, such as flashing coloured wing lights. However, seen from a distance, aircraft will often be visible only as moving white lights.
The average number of witnesses per case is approximately 2.00. This value has fluctuated between a high of 2.4 in 1996 to as low as 1.4 in 1990. In 2011, the average number of witnesses per case was 1.74, and the value in 2012 remained about the same, at 1.79. In 2013, the average number of witnesses per sighting was 1.71.
This indicates that the typical UFO experience has more than one witness, and supports the contention that UFO sightings represent observations of real, physical phenomena, since there is usually at least one corroborator present to support the sighting.
Witnesses’ descriptions of the shapes of UFOs vary greatly. In 2013, about 54 per cent were of “point sources”—that is, “starlike” objects or distant lights, about the same as previous years. The classic “flying saucer” or disc-shaped object comprised only around five per cent of all UFO reports in 2013, contrary to popular opinion. Even the “triangle” shape, which some ufologists have suggested has supplanted the classic “saucer,” was only five percent of the total in 2013.
The shape of a perceived object depends on many factors such as the witness’ own visual acuity, the angle of viewing, the distance of viewing and the witness’ own biases and descriptive abilities. Nevertheless, in combination with other case data such as duration, shape can be a good clue towards a UFO’s possible explanation.

The assigning of a Strangeness rating to a UFO report is based on a classification adopted by researchers who noted that the inclusion of a subjective evaluation of the degree to which a particular case is initself unusual might yield some insight into the data. For example, the observation of a single, stationary, starlike light in the sky, seen for several hours, is not particularly unusual and might likely have a prosaic explanation such as that of a star or planet. On the other hand, a detailed observation of a saucer-shaped object which glides slowly away from a witness after an encounter with grey-skinned aliens would be considered highly strange.
The numbers of UFO reports according to strangeness rating show an inverse relationship such that the higher the strangeness rating, the fewer reports. The one exception to this relationship occurs in the case of very low strangeness cases, which are relatively few in number compared to those of moderate strangeness. It is suggested this is the case because in order for an observation to be considered a UFO, it must usually rise above an ad hoc level of strangeness, otherwise it would not be considered strange at all.
The average strangeness rating for UFO reports during 2013 was 3.67, up from the 2012 average of 3.21, where 1 is considered not strange at all and 9 is considered exceptionally unusual. Most UFOs reported are of objects which do not greatly stretch the imagination. Hollywood-style flying saucers are, in reality, relatively uncommon in UFO reports. The overall Strangeness rating of Canadian UFO reports has been sliding slightly over time.
The averageReliability rating of Canadian UFO reports in 2013 was 3.8, down significantly from an average of 4.6 in 2012. In most years, there are approximately the same number of higher quality cases as those of low quality. However, in 2013, more reports had minimal information on the witness, little or no investigation and incomplete data or description of the object(s) observed. Higher reliability cases include actual interviews with witnesses, a detailed case investigation, multiple witnesses, supporting documentation and other evidence. Since data for many cases are taken from websites and second-handpostings, or in fact self-postings, there is usually no significant investigation of UFO sightings. Well-investigated cases likely comprise only a small fraction of all UFO data, a fact that makes posted UFO case data have limited value.
Reliability andStrangeness ratings tend to vary in classic bell-shaped curves. In other words, there are very few cases which were both highly unusual and well-reported. Most cases are of medium strangeness and medium reliability. These are the “high-quality unknowns” which will be discussed in a later section of this study. However, there are also very few low-strangeness cases with low reliability. Low-strangeness cases, therefore, tend to be well-reported and probably have explanations.
UFO data used in this study were supplied by many different groups, organizations, official agencies and private individuals. Since this annual survey began in the late 1980s, more and more cases have been obtained and received via the Internet.
About 32 per cent of Canadian cases in 2013 were reported to the large organization known as the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), which has a good online reporting system. Traditionally, the lion’s share of reports used as data came through Sightings.com, which has been relaying UFO cases reported through the former Houston, BC, Centre for UFOs (HBCCUFO), with about 32 per cent in 2010 and 35 per cent in 2011, but up to 45 per cent in 2012 and down to 24 per cent in 2013. The decline in 2013 was due to HBCCUFO scaling down its activity.
In 2013, about nine per cent of the total cases were obtained through the private and non-profit National UFO Reporting Center in the USA. Like MUFON, NUFORC has a toll-free telephone number for reporting UFOs and a large sightings list created through voluntary submission of online report forms by witnesses.
About five per cent of all UFO sightings reported in 2013 were sent directly to Ufology Research.
Less than one per cent of all cases came as a result of information obtained through Transport Canada and the Department of National Defence.
It should be noted that the preparation of this Survey is becoming quite challenging. Few UFO investigators or researchers actually submit case data to UFOROM anymore, requiring considerable searching of online sources. And, although many sites post information about UFO sightings, very little actual UFO investigation is being conducted. In fact, it could be said that the science of UFO investigation has nearly become extinct. This does not bode well for an area of study that is under constant criticism by debunkers wishing to prove the unscientific nature of the subject.
In 2013, the percentage of Unknowns was 14.5 per cent. There were 172 Unknowns out of 1,180 total cases in 2013.
If we look only at the Unknowns with a Strangeness of 6 or greater and a Reliability rating of 6 or greater, we are left with 48 high-quality Unknowns in 2013 (about four per cent of the total). This is in line with previous studies, such as USAF Blue Book, which found three to four per cent of their cases were “excellent” Unknowns. As it is, these 48 Canadian cases in 2013 can be reduced further by eliminating those in which investigation is not complete or details not made available for outside evaluation.
It should be emphasized again that even high-quality Unknowns do not imply alien visitation. Each case may still have an explanation following further investigation. And of those that remain unexplained, they may remain unexplained, but still are not incontrovertible proof of extraterrestrial intervention or some mysterious natural phenomenon.
The interpretation of the 172 Unknowns in 2013 is that these cases were among the most challenging of all the reports received. It should be noted that most UFO cases go unreported, and that there may be ten times as many UFO sightings that go unreported as those which get reported to public, private or military agencies. Furthermore, it should be noted that some cases with lower reliability ratings suffer only from incomplete investigations, and that they may well be more mysterious than those on the list of Unknowns. And, above all, these cases are not proof of extraterrestrial visitation.
The increase in the numbers of UFO reports with time likely does not have a simple explanation. It could be related to a growing awareness within the general population that there are agencies which collect UFO reports. It could be that there really are more UFOs physically present in the sky. It could be that the collection of UFO data is becoming more efficient. It could be that there are more private websites allowing or inviting people to report their UFO sightings. While media have been noted as playing a definite role in UFO waves (a national increase in UFO sightings), media coverage of UFO reports has significantly declined over the past decade while the number of reports has risen. Perhaps a cultural factor is at work as well, where “aliens” and UFOs are now well-entrenched within the societal mindset and are accepted as more probable than fiction. This question by itself is deserving of scientific study.

When we think of fairies, most of us immediately think of pixies, gnomes, or leprechauns from Ireland. Most of us have no clue that dozens of the Native American tribes in the United States believed in the “little people”, just as the Europeans did for many centuries. In fact, there have been real fairy sightings in the United States for hundreds of years. Some real fairy sightings have occurred in the past couple of years, right here in America. Nonsense, some might say. But if the non-believer would travel back in time to a year when nature was still Queen of the Earth, that non-believer would meet people all over the world (even right here in the United States) who not only believed in fairies but have had many real fairy encounters. To the Cherokee tribe, the little people were just as real as you and I.
The Cherokee tribe of the North Carolina mountains believed in different types of fairies, including the moon-eyed people, laurel people, and more. Of course they had their own Cherokee names for the little people which sounded a lot different than the names presented above. And just as the Irish and Scottish believed that fairies could be benevolent and also mischievous, so did the Cherokee. In many cases, they believed that the fairies were nature spirits who guarded the mountain and the wildlife living on the mountain. Some stories tell of the fairies actually helping the Cherokee on hunting trips, while other stories depict a different type of fairy that liked to play tricks on the Cherokee hunters by tripping them, et cetera.
Many of the real fairy sightings that the Cherokee tribes experienced for many years have been forgotten or not handed down, but I’ll bet if you ask the right person some real fairy sighting stories still exist among the Cherokee tribe. There is one story of Chimney Rock in North Carolina of a real fairy sighting that happened in the late 1800s, and it was experienced by more than one person. All of whom were not Cherokee Natives but were Caucasian villagers.
(Just as a pre-cursor to this real fairy sighting story, I believe I have a few minor details incorrect as far as the sequence but the meat & plot of the story is true.)
There was a professor (a man of reasonable logic) in 1891 who was working in his home when there came a knock at the door. A few children had pleaded with the professor to come to the side of Chimney Rock mountain to see the “people floating around on the side of the mountain”. The professor ended up dismissing this cry for help as simply a prank being done to amuse the children on a boring Summer’s day. But then, a few minutes later, another knock came at his door. This time it wasn’t the mischievous children but an older woman who lived in the village. She was also pleading with him to come and see the “ghosties” on the side of Chimney Rock mountain. At this point he decided he would accompany the old woman to Chimney Rock to assure her that there was no supernatural thing floating on the side of the mountain.
But when he got there, he saw it. There were dozens of bright beings flying around the side of the mountain…right there on the side of Chimney Rock! He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Was he witnessing a real fairy sighting? These beings were bright and all wearing white gowns, they looked like humans but were flying. There was dozens of these fairies, even appeared to be men, women, and children. It was a sight that he never dreamed of seeing in all of his years. Many more people from the village went that day to see the real fairies or little people, some in later years claiming they were indeed angels, and the story lived on for years afterwards at Chimney Rock. In my honest opinion, I believe they had a real fairy encounter that day though many religious people don’t want to attribute the sighting to real fairies but would rather say they were angels at this point. Such a shame, really.
While a real angel encounter would be a thing of wonderful magnitude, a real fairy sighting at Chimney Rock just seems to fit easier with the Cherokee legends of the little people and real fairies that have circulated that area for hundreds of years.

There was no way dozens of people had the same mirage or hallucination, especially since the mirage or hallucination lasted for hours that day. And if they were all poisoned or on drugs of some nature, why would they see the exact same thing? I’d like to hear your thoughts on this real fairy sighting. Purple jellyfish with multiple mouths could be new species
Scientists believe a bright purple jellyfish covered in tiny mouths that has washed up on a beach in Queensland, Austarlia, could be an undiscovered species. The extraordinary colour of the creature has baffled marine experts, who are now trying to determine the species, which sadly died during analysis.
“It’s straight out of science fiction,” said marine biologist Dr Lisa Gershwin. “It’s an electric, vibrant, ‘wow’ purple.” She said the tentacles, or oral arms, were about a metre long and covered in microscopic mouths. Lifeguards on the sunshine coast found the jellyfish at Coolum beach on Wednesday morning and handed it over to scientists at nearby Underwater World.
Gershwin believed the jellyfish could be a thysanostoma, but said the species was normally brown or beige. “It begs the question, if it’s such a vibrant, different colour, what other features does it have?” Gershwin, from the CSIRO marine and atmospheric research centre, said. The plot thickened on Thursday, with pictures emerging of a second specimen from Ballina in northern New South Wales.
Dr Gershwin said it was possible the jellyfish had arrived in Australia in the ballast of a ship. If it is a species known as a thysanostoma, it could have come from the Red Sea, Malaysia or the Philippines. “The reason we haven’t been able to progress this is because the literature is in German and from the 1800s,’’ she said. “No work has been done on this since then. I’m getting the papers translated by a native German speaker. We need to find out if it’s new to science and, if it is, why it hasn’t been seen before. If it’s not from here, we need to work out where it came from and how it got here.’’ –news.com.au
Hi I am seeking some advice. For some background my wife and I have lived in this apartment for 4 years and 3 months ago brought home our newborn baby boy. Over the last few weeks we have had some strange occurrences centered around our bedroom.
The first thing we noticed when our son was laying in the bed was him staring at a blank spot on the ceiling. Sometimes he smiles or makes sounds while looking at this spot, which is in front of a wall mirror we have. We kind of joked that he was looking at an invisible friend but he does it all the time when he is in our room, sometimes he will kind of track across the ceiling with his eyes like he is looking at something. It’s a little creepy but what has happened the last few nights have freaked my wife out a bit.
A few nights ago I woke up from a vivid nightmare. I was sleeping on the couch because I snore sometimes and my wife was sleeping in our room with the baby. I noticed the house felt hot so I went into her room and noticed the thermostat turned up and I could smell the heater and hear it ticking on, so I turned it down because it is warming up for summer here and it was pretty warm in the room. I didn’t think much of it and turned on some Netflix and fell asleep.
The night before last my wife wakes me up and asks if I turned up the heat. It was really warm in the room and once again the heater was turned up mysteriously. This happened AGAIN last night and it’s pretty weird. Neither of us have any history of sleepwalking and the thermostat is not an automatic one, it has to be manually adjusted.
The other thing to note is that I have been awoken from vivid nightmares almost every night for the last two weeks. This usually happens at about 3 am exactly which I know is regarded as one of the witching hours. I’ve always had trouble sleeping and have had periods of vivid dreams and nightmares in the past but not for years. I attribute these to the stress of having a new baby and my worries but I thought it was worth mentioning.
My wife and I have had a handful of unexplained, possible paranormal experiences in our lives between the two of us. Does anyone here have any thoughts or advice for us? – Reddit.com
Miguel Olivo was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, two days after biting off a piece of Triple-A Albuquerque teammate Alex Guerrero’s left ear during a dugout brawl.
Olivo, a veteran catcher, and Guerrero, the highly paid Cuban second base prospect, fought during the Isotopes game at Salt Lake on Tuesday. The Dodgers suspended Olivo on Wednesday while they conducted an investigation.
“It’s unimaginable, inconceivable and unforgivable,” Dodgers President Stan Kasten said at Citi Field before the Dodgers played the New York Mets. “It’s not a question of fault. The action of removing a part of someone’s ear is unforgivable. Fault is not an issue here.”
The 27-year-old Guerrero had reconstructive surgery on his ear and there is no timetable for his return, Kasten said. The Dodgers executive said he was told Olivo bit off a significant chunk from the top of Guerrero’s ear.
The Dodgers should have a better idea of how long Guerrero will be out by Sunday, Kasten said. Kasten also said there was no decision yet on whether Guerrero will file criminal charges.
Olivo will not face discipline from the commissioner’s office because the Dodgers terminated his contract. Under the collective bargaining agreement, either the club or Major League Baseball can discipline a player, not both. – AP
Did the US Government Make a Pact With Aliens to Get Technology?
Phil Schneider was vocal before his death about what he says he learned about aliens while working under a high-level security clearance for the U.S. government. Epoch Times does not make any claims as to the veracity of his story, but rather presents his extraordinary claims for the reader’s entertainment and contemplation.
Schneider met with ridicule from many, but there are also many who believe him after watching his videos, such as Veterans Today senior editor Gordon Duff who calls him a “UFO whistleblower.” Schneider was found dead in his apartment in 1996. Though it was ruled a suicide, some believe he was murdered.
In 1954, then-President Dwight Eisenhower made a pact with three species of aliens, said Schneider in a lecture at the 1995 Preparedness Expo. In exchange for alien technology, Eisenhower allegedly gave aliens permission to abduct some cattle and a limited number of human beings.
For decades livestock have been found inexplicably mutilated across the United States. More than 10,000 attacks have been recorded throughout the country, according to KLAS-TV Las Vegas. Some say these mutilations are done by cultists. Some say it’s predatory animals, although livestock have been found with their organs removed in a precise manner. Some say it’s aliens.
As for human abductees, Schneider said many of the thousands of people missing worldwide may have been taken by aliens. He said there are nine races of aliens that see a human being as “a bag of food.”
The technology aliens gave to uphold their end of this exchange includes a kind of metal that is nearly indestructible. Schneider showed the audience what he said was a piece of this metal. It is made of niobium, an element we have on the periodic table, and marinite, an alien element you won’t find mentioned in Earth’s textbooks.
He said the government also developed a spy satellite with the help of aliens that could spot a dime on your kitchen floor. It used infrared technology and had a resolution factor of 99.99961.
The aliens violated the pact, said Schneider, by taking more humans than agreed upon. A war with the aliens has been fought ever since. He said the aliens plan to take over Earth by 2029 and he called on the government to tell citizens what it knows.

The House Science Committee Has Held More Hearings on Aliens Than on Climate Change

Congress is fascinated by the search for intelligent life on other planets. Apparently, they’ve given up the search at home.
In this session of Congress, House committees tasked with covering U.S. energy and science have held a total of seven hearings to discuss climate change. By contrast, the two chambers have held a combined 19 hearings about space exploration in that same time period.
The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee—led by Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, since 2013—has held 15 hearings on space exploration alone, at least three of which have involved the search for extraterrestrial life. By comparison, Smith’s committee has held just two hearings devoted to climate change.
The Democrat-controlled Senate doesn’t have a much better record. The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee has held three hearings this session on climate change, while the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has not had a hearing devoted to the topic since 2012. The Senate Commerce Science and Space Subcommittee has had one hearing about climate change and four about space.
On the House side, the House Energy and Commerce Committee hosted one solitary hearing about climate change, and the House Natural Resources Committee has not had a hearing on climate change in the 113th Congress.
In a House Science Committee hearing Wednesday, Seth Shostak, an American astronomer, defended the notion that the search for alien life is worthwhile. He pointed out that NASA’s Kepler mission has found there are trillion of planets in our galaxy, including many planets that could hypothetically support life.
“It’s very easy to make fun of this,” Shostak said. “On the other hand, it would have been very easy to make fun of Ferdinand Magellan’s idea to sail around the earth, or Captain Cook to map the South Pacific.”
And make fun of it the committee members did. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, joked that extraterrestrial societies may be actively avoiding contact with earthlings. “Maybe they’ve got their caller ID turned on or something,” Johnson said.
Rep. Chris Collins, R-New York, joined the fun. ”I’m going to ask what everyone in the room wants to ask. Have you watched Ancient Aliens, and what do you think of that series?” he asked. “I think I’ve been on that program,” Shostak replied.
But committee Chairman Lamar Smith took the issue very seriously, pressing the panelists on how likely it is that there’s intelligent life on other planets. He was pleased with their response: nearly 100 percent.
While Smith may support the search for extraterrestrial life, he’s much less sympathetic about the cause of climate change on this planet. Last year, Smith wrote a column in The Washington Post casting doubt on the idea that global warming is caused by human energy use.
“Climate change is an issue that needs to be discussed thoughtfully and objectively,” Smith wrote. “Contrary to the claims of those who want to strictly regulate carbon dioxide emissions and increase the cost of energy for all Americans, there is a great amount of uncertainty associated with climate science.”
But, judging by the actions of the committee Smith chairs, a reasoned debate about Earth’s atmosphere isn’t nearly as appealing as speculating on the atmospheres of other planets.
You could argue that it makes sense for the House Science Committee to rigorously discuss outer space—after all, it’s right there in the committee’s name. But you could also argue that when the committee you chair has the word “science” in its name, you may want to discuss the premier scientific debate that’s going on.
The House Science Committee has discussed climate change in relation to other projects, such as theKeystone XL pipeline. But its main focus, along with other House committees dealing with energy and the environment, has been to reprimand the Environmental Protection Agency for its regulations.
At Wednesday’s hearing, Dan Werthimer of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute, or SETI, made the point that a search for intelligent life could prove futile. “If we discover that we are alone, we’d better take really good care of life on this planet,” he told the committee.
The truth may be out there, but so are some uncomfortable truths we’ll eventually have to deal with, right here.
Apophis was discovered on June 19, 2004, by Roy A. Tucker, David J. Tholen and Fabrizio Bernardi at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. On December 21, 2004, Apophis passed 0.0963 AU (14,410,000 km; 8,950,000 mi) from Earth. Precovery observations from March 15, 2004, were identified on December 27, and an improved orbit was computed. Radar astrometry in January 2005 further refined the orbit. When first discovered, the object received the provisional designation 2004 MN4, and news and scientific articles about it referred to it by that name. When its orbit was sufficiently well calculated, it received the permanent number 99942 (on June 24, 2005). Receiving a permanent number made it eligible for naming, and it received the name “Apophis” on July 19, 2005. Apophis is the Greek name of an enemy of the Ancient Egyptian sun-god Ra: Apep, the Uncreator, an evil serpent that dwells in the eternal darkness of the Duat and tries to swallow Ra during his nightly passage. Apep is held at bay by Set, the Ancient Egyptian god of storms and the desert. David J. Tholen and Tucker—two of the co-discoverers of the asteroid—are reportedly fans of the TV series Stargate SG-1. One of the show’s persistent villains is an alien named Apophis. In the fictional world of the show, the alien’s backstory was that he had lived on Earth during ancient times and had posed as a god, thereby giving rise to the myth of the Egyptian god of the same name. After the Minor Planet Center confirmed the June discovery of Apophis, an April 13, 2029 close approach was flagged by NASA’s automatic Sentry system and NEODyS, a similar automatic program run by the University of Pisa and the University of Valladolid. On that date, it will become as bright as magnitude 3.4 (visible to the naked eye from rural as well as darker suburban areas, visible with binoculars from most locations). The close approach will be visible from Europe, Africa, and western Asia. During the close approach in 2029 Earth will perturb Apophis from an Aten class orbit with a semi-major axis of 0.92 AU to an Apollo class orbit with a semi-major axis of 1.1 AU. After Sentry and NEODyS announced the possible impact, additional observations decreased the uncertainty in Apophis’s trajectory. As they did, the probability of an impact event temporarily climbed, peaking at 2.7% (1 in 37).This probability, combined with its size, caused Apophis to be assessed at level 4 on the Torino Scale, and 1.10 on the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale, scales scientists use to represent how dangerous a given asteroid is to Earth. These are the highest values for which any object has been rated on either scale. The chance that there would be an impact in 2029 was eliminated by December 27, 2004. The danger of a 2036 passage was lowered to level 0 on the Torino Scale in August 2006. With a cumulative Palermo Scale rating of −3.2,[3] the risk of impact from Apophis is less than one thousandth the background hazard level. On April 13, 2029, Apophis will pass Earth within the orbits of geosynchronous communication satellites, but will come no closer than 19,400 miles (31,300 kilometers) above Earth’s surface. The 2029 pass will be much closer than had first been predicted. The pass in late March 2036 will be no closer than about 23 million kilometres (14×106 mi) — and will probably miss us by something closer to 56 million kilometres (35×106 mi). 2005 and 2011 observations In July 2005, former Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart, as chairman of the B612 Foundation, formally asked NASA to investigate the possibility that the asteroid’s post-2029 orbit could be in orbital resonance with Earth, which would increase the probability of future impacts. Schweickart also asked NASA to investigate whether a transponder should be placed on the asteroid to enable more accurate tracking of how its orbit is affected by the Yarkovsky effect. Why Were These UFOs Shadowing a Virgin Jet Above Australia’s Bondi Beach?
More unexplained objects. Do non-believers of UFO’s still exist? I suspect everyone acknowledges UFO’s these days. If not, they’re in for one whollop of a surprise in our near future!
Photographer snaps UFOs flying over Bondi while taking photos of a storm. Dan Toomey said they were not visible to the naked eye but on a computer. He saw one saucer-like and cigar-shaped object hovering next to a plane.
In the series of photographs, taken in 2009, a saucer-like and cigar-shaped object are seen flying either side of a Virgin Blue plane. Over the next few days, Mr Toomey tried to find out what the objects were, but was unsuccessful. ‘I tried to experiment to determine whether or not any insects or birds could have produced similar results, which is impossible – I’ve consulted with other photographers,’ he said. ‘The photographs are authentic and they are objects that cannot be claimed. ‘If you invert the photo to a negative, the plane appears white as a solid object and so do the other objects.’ But this is not the first time Mr Toomey has spotted an unexplained object. He said he had seen them with his own eyes but had rarely captured them on film.
‘It always pays to have a camera handy,’ the 38-year-old said. Even though the photos were taken in 2009, Mr Toomey has been holding them close to his chest. Read more or watch video below.

But with the unexplained disappearance of the Malaysian Airlines flight, he felt it was time to share them.
'There’s a big a question mark next to that plane and a lot of conspiracies surrounding what happened,' Mr Toomey said.
'Maybe it’s the right time for the world to know and that these things are real.'
Flight MH370 was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it went missing on March 8.
The search for the plane continues off the coast of Australia in the southern Indian Ocean.
