What happened to the robots? The future of robots and robotics explained
What happened to the robots? The future of robots and robotics explained
Why we may never see fully functional robots in everyday life
With serious money being invested in robotics by companies such as Google, Dyson, and others, are we about to see robots become an everyday reality? We look at how far the field has come, and what lies ahead in the very near future. (See also: Google shows more love for robots with Savioke investment.)
Our lives are awash with technology. The internet brings valuable information and freshly cooked pizza to our doors, smartphones organise our lives, while even our cars are beginning to talk to us. But one huge omission blights this electronic utopia, prompting the eternal question: "Where's my robotic manservant?" Well, it might be sooner than you think that we'll be rubbing shoulders with digital denizens, at home, work and even in hospital.
Robots in the home
Books and movies have spun a yarn or two about how robots will serve our every needs: clean the house, cook dinner and walk the dog – unless that's a robot, too, in which case it can walk itself, possibly after making your favourite meal. It might then seem sensible to go to your robot emporium of choice, order the Jeeves-Bot 3000 and sit back to enjoy a life of peeled grapes and microwave-equipped canines. Sadly, things aren't quite there yet.
Although millions of pounds in research investment have been poured into robotics, the practical upshot for the high street consumer is that you can now buy a pretty funky vacuum cleaner. The Roomba 760 (£399) is a disc-shaped robotic device that will spend the day negotiating its way around your house, hoovering as it goes. It joins the family of devices available from US company iRobot that also includes the Scooba (£599), which scrubs your floors, the Looj (£249) cleans your guttering, while the Braava (£259) is a robotic mop. iRobot also sell a variety of military automatons, including the 710 Warrior, but they don't really get into those hard to reach corners of the carpet.
For the more technically astute there are a wealth of home robot kits that can be bought from shops such as Conrad, Jameco, and Amazon, but even these are still not much more than clever Meccano kits with a few sensors.
Other than these humble offerings, and the occasional expensive toy, the options for robot-hungry consumers are all mostly vapour and fairy wishes. Things could be set to change, though, as technology continues to develop at an incredible rate. Sir James Dyson, designer of the eponymous vacuum cleaner, has recently invested £5 million in a laboratory at Imperial College London, which will work with Dyson's company to research and develop domestic robots.
"My generation believed the world would be overrun by robots by the year 2014," Dyson told the BBC. "We now have the mechanical and electronic capabilities, but robots still lack understanding – seeing and thinking in the way we do." The goal of the research with Imperial College is to improve this aspect of robotics, and solve the problems that have held the area back so far. It will still be years before we actually see something affordable on the shelves of Tesco, but at least the area is now becoming a focal point for many developers and technology companies.
"Mastering this will make our lives easier," Dyson continued, "and lead to previously unthinkable technologies."
Google has spent the past year or so buying a number of robotics companies including Boston Dynamics, who build military devices for the US government. The search giant has remained strangely quiet on its motives, but the sudden move to acquire so many talented minds in the area illustrates how important it has become. One example of a Google use for intelligent machines is the self-driving car that has been in development for some time. The Chauffeur project has recently celebrated 700,000 accident free miles, many of them on the real streets of California. At the moment, the huge number of sensors and tracking technology in the cars amounts to an eye-watering £90,000 but in time this should come down to make it a far more affordable option. Robots might not be in our homes, but maybe they'll take us there safely.
One country where robots have a domestic presence is, unsurprisingly, Japan. Companion robots have been an accepted technology for many years now, with machines such as the Wakamaru, launched in 2005, used to provide company for the elderly or housebound. Employing a voice interface, admittedly primitive by today's standards, the Wakamaru could engage in basic conversation and also provide its owners with prompting for taking medication or even contacting emergency services in the event of a fall or sudden illness. Such is the need for care assistants, due to a large number of aged citizens, that the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced in the 2013 budget the allocation of around £14m for the development of robots specifically to help in this area. Replacing human carers with mechanical alternatives isn't proving popular yet, though, and the industry still has a long way to go before this becomes a serious alternative to human nurses.
One that's already earning its keep is the Paro therapeutic robot, which, rather unusually takes the form of a fluffy baby seal. This curious device is used to deliver animal therapy to patients in hospitals, in particular to those suffering with Alzheimer's and dementia. It learns from its user, responds to their voice and physical interactions, and the company claims that the robot "has been found to reduce patient stress" and "improves the socialisation of patients with each other and with caregivers". This led the Guinness book of records to certify it as the World's Most Therapeutic Robot.
The UK has also started to embrace the health-related benefits of robots with the diminutive Nao, built by Aldebaran Robotics, being used by a school in Birmingham to help teach children with aspergers and autism. The placid nature of the machine makes it an ideal tool for educational purposes, while its small scale, mobility and voice interaction endear the creation to the children.
There has been a trend in recent years to build smaller, more human-like robots. Some of these – Roboy, iCub and Asimo – are pushing forward the boundaries of design, artificial intelligence, and the ‘feel' that Sir James Dyson referenced. Asimo has become something of a celebrity in its own right, with appearances on TV shows all over the world, such as the UK's QI and Norway's Brille, conferences, and it even greeted US President Barack Obama on a recent trip to Japan, then proceeded to play football with him.
The Asimo (Advanced Step in Mobility) project has been in development at Honda for around 15 years, and the results are impressive. The robot can run, hop, jump, talk and interact with humans in a variety of ways. In terms of classic robots of fiction, Asimo is definitely the closest yet that any have come. It's the pinnacle of humanoid robotics, but with only an estimated 60 units in the world, it won't be making the transition to a domestic setting for a long time to come. Career-minded robots
If there's one area of robotics that is beginning to flourish then it's that of robots in the workplace. We've already seen how manufacturing has been automated in recent years so that robots are now a common sight on production lines and in car assembly plants. From a business point of view this makes perfect sense: machines are more efficient at handling repetitive tasks without getting tired, injured or needing the toilet. They also don't take lunch breaks, holidays, call in sick or engage in industrial disputes, although they will no doubt need repairing from time to time. Additionally, there are no regulations on how many hours a day robots can work, and overtime for weekends and national holidays isn't an issue.
Baxter is one of these new breed of employee. His creators, Rethink Robotics, have designed him to be affordable and easily adapted to new tasks. With a starting price of around £15,000 (plus £4,000 per year for maintenance) this certainly meets the first goal, and an innovative programming system makes the second surprisingly achievable. Baxter has two appendages that are multihinged to allow a wide range of movements. To teach him a task the operator presses a button, then physically moves the arms through the positions required. When finished they press the button again and Baxter will remember and repeat. In essence, it's recording a macro on a giant robot.
"Unlike traditional industrial robots, Baxter is an adaptive manufacturing robot' stated Mitch Rosenberg, Rethink Robotic's VP of Marketing and Production management, in a recent interview. "It contains cameras, sensors and sophisticated software that enable it to ‘see' objects, ‘feel' forces and ‘understand' tasks. The result is a robot that automatically adapts to changing environments."
This awareness also means that the robot is safe for humans to work alongside. Traditionally, industrial machines work in a defined pattern, which can be potentially dangerous if someone accidentally gets in the way. Baxter uses his sensors to prevent this from happening, and while there may be a few bumps they'll be more akin to a fellow employee backing into you rather than a bone-crunching attack.
Another goal of Rethink Robotics is to stem the flow of manufacturing being outsourced to the Far East, a trend that has increased in recent years due to the paltry wages and questionable safety requirements that allow for lower costs. By employing robots rather than impoverished people in another country, there could be serious implications on the nature of manufacturing and the worldwide economy if the idea were to be implemented on a large scale.
Obviously this is still worrying news for the large majority of unskilled workers in the West, who currently rely on factories and packing plants for their livelihoods. The average UK factory or assembly line employee is thought to earn somewhere in the region of £15,000 per year. That would mean that over five years they would cost their employer £75,000. Baxter, by comparison, would cost a frighteningly low £35,000, and be able to work more than twice as many hours. (See also: Intel plans to sell a robot you can customize with a 3D printer.)
It's not only industrial jobs that could be superseded; with voice interactions and increasingly sophisticated chassis that are safe to be around, how long before supermarket aisles are the domain of stacking robots that can also tell customers where they can find Fennel seeds? In fact this year at the Consumer Electronic Show the Furo-S robot was demonstrated by FutureRobot, which can roam around its environment, talk to people, features a touchscreen interface for customers to find information, order items and even has a card slot to take a payment. Whether it can be made waterproof or not might determine whether it will shortly be accosting you on city streets to donate to various charities.
While all of these innovations are fascinating, there's genuine concern that many unskilled or casual jobs will disappear in the coming years as robots become more financially attractive. The need for skilled supervisors will still exist, but for the majority of the workforce, the future could become very uncertain. Amazon has already bought Kiva Systems, whose squat, orange robots fetch and carry entire shelving stacks in the enormous Amazon fulfillment warehouses, to enable pickers to package and send deliveries far quicker than humans have ever managed.
This $775m purchase will no doubt pay for itself quickly, as productivity is estimated to have been improved threefold. Amazon isn't stopping there, though. With robots doing most of the heavy lifting in the fulfillment process, why not have them actually deliver the items as well? Amazon Prime Air is the new initiative from the retail megalith which involves flying drones delivering your packages. It might sound like an April Fool's joke, but the retailer is deadly serious and is just waiting on FCC approval to allow the company to enter US airspace. Couriers should be concerned about this, although Google may well put them out of business first with their self-driving cars. The International Federation of Robotics expect machines to be adopted in previously resistant areas at an increased rate.
"In 2007, the US Bureau of Labor reported rates of work-related injury or illness for full-time food manufacturing workers were higher than the rates for all of manufacturing and for the private sector as a whole," it says on its website. "Robot manufacturers have designed robots to meet the unique needs of the food industry that comply with food grade equipment standards. The pharmaceutical industry is another industry that has been slow to adopt robots but has pressure to decrease costs, increase production accuracy, and achieve flexible manufacturing. The worldwide demand for pharmaceutical products is on the rise making this another fertile industry for the use of robots."
While the IFR reports that the use of robots could create as many as three million jobs upstream from manufacturing in the next eight years, it's assured that many employment sectors will see substantial changes in the future.
"There's no automatic guarantee that these jobs will appear or that they'll be at good wages," argued author and technology analyst Eric Brynjolfsson in a recent BBC interview. "There's no economic law that says that everyone's going to benefit from technology. It's possible for some people, even potentially a majority of people, to be made worse off." One area where many people would be happy to see robots employed is when the danger to human life makes machines a preferable option. DARPA, the Pentagon's scientific research department for military technology, has created a competition for robotics companies to design and build machines that can be used for search and rescue missions. These robots must be capable of completing tasks that range from navigating their way through treacherous terrain, operating machinery (for example, pressure valves to avert explosions), using firefighting equipment, locating survivors and carrying them to safety.
This might sound like something still in the realms of science fiction, but creations like the Atlas robot illustrate just how far the technology has evolved. It's a six-foot tall, bipedal automaton that bears a frightening resemblance to a Terminator-style metal exoskeleton. It's about as advanced as things get at the moment in terms of strength, balance and capability in a single model. Demonstrations by its inventors at Boston Dynamics show its ability to balance on one leg after being hit on the side with a weight, climb stairs, walls, and there is also the potential for it to drive a vehicle. Eventually the hope is that Atlas, and units like it, will remove the need for humans to risk their lives in rescue situations, in much the same way as bomb disposal robots operate now.
Capabilities such as these raise the obvious question of military applications, after all Atlas received significant funding from DARPA. The US Department of Defence has gone on record, stating it isn't planning to use the robots in combat situations, but the temptation will prove very hard to resist as these creations become even more powerful.
Like so many other areas in technology, it seems that industry and the military will be the first to see the benefits of robotics. But just as the Apollo missions gave us non-stick frying pans, maybe the race for robotic supremacy will gift us similar benefits. Let's just hope that we get a C-3PO before the Transformers arrive. Star Trek's "Scotty" finally launched into space
Star Trek's "Scotty" finally launched into space

(AP) WASHINGTON - James Doohan, Scotty from "Star Trek," spent his acting career whizzing through the cosmos. Gordon Cooper was one of America's famous Mercury seven astronauts. And Bob Shrake spent his work life anonymously helping send NASA's high-tech spacecraft to other planets.
Now the three men who made space their lives are also making space their final resting place. Their ashes - and those of about 300 others - were aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket that blasted into orbit Tuesday as part of an in-space for-profit burial business.
Shrake was an engineer who designed spaceship control instruments for NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab. After he died in 2007, his family decided that space would be a nice place to send some of his ashes so they spent a few thousand dollars to launch them in space with the Texas-based firm Celestis Inc. His daughter, Robin Smith of Grapevine, Texas, got up very early Tuesday to watch the pre-dawn launch, and said it was fitting.
"I thought wow, he was actually up in the sky, in the place where his work is being used," Smith said by telephone.
The ashes were in a special container, which SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell confirmed Tuesday was in the second stage of the Falcon rocket. That section of the rocket was jettisoned about 10 minutes after launching a capsule full of supplies for the International Space Station. It will remain in orbit for about a year then burn up as it returns to Earth.
You don't have to be in the space business to have your ashes deposited in orbit, but you do have to have nearly $3,000. Some of what Celestis calls "participants" in this flight, which the company called its "new frontier" mission, have no connection to space.
Some people's ashes that flew Tuesday, including those of Doohan and Cooper, were also on a botched 2008 SpaceX launch that didn't get the remains into orbit and dropped into the Pacific Ocean. This is a makeup flight for them.
Others whose ashes have flown previously include "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry and his actress-wife Majel Barrett, who was in the series.
Smith said her father - ever the frugal engineer - might have thought this a waste of money, but his family is glad they did it: "Most of his career dealt with outer space and orbit and now he's in it."

Newly Found Megalithic Ruins In Russia Contain The Largest Blocks Of Stone Ever Discovered
Newly Found Megalithic Ruins In Russia Contain The Largest Blocks Of Stone Ever Discovered
An incredible discovery that was recently made in Russia threatens to shatter conventional theories about the history of the planet. On Mount Shoria in southern Siberia, researchers have found an absolutely massive wall of granite stones. Some of these gigantic granite stones are estimated to weigh more than 3,000 tons, and as you will see below, many of them were cut “with flat surfaces, right angles, and sharp corners”. Nothing of this magnitude has ever been discovered before. The largest stone found at the megalithic ruins at Baalbek, Lebanon is less than 1,500 tons. So how in the world did someone cut 3,000 ton granite stones with extreme precision, transport them up the side of a mountain and stack them 40 meters high? According to the commonly accepted version of history, it would be impossible for ancient humans with very limited technology to accomplish such a thing. Could it be possible that there is much more to the history of this planet than we are being taught?
For years, historians and archaeologists have absolutely marveled at the incredibly huge stones found at Baalbek. But some of these stones in Russia are reportedly more than twice the size. Needless to say, a lot of people are getting very excited about this discovery. The following comes from a Mysterious Universe article…
Alternate history buffs are about to be whipped into a frenzy! OK, maybe not, but they will find this interesting.
An ancient “super-megalithic” site has been found in the Siberian Mountains. Found recently in Gornaya Shoria (Mount Shoria) in southern Siberia, this site consists of huge blocks of stone, which appear to be granite, with flat surfaces, right angles, and sharp corners. The blocks appear to be stacked, almost in the manner of cyclopean masonry, and well…they’re enormous!
Russia is no stranger to ancient megalithic sites, like Arkaim or Russia’s Stonehenge, and the Manpupuner formation, just to name two, but the site at Shoria is unique in that, if it’s man-made, the blocks used are undoubtedly the largest ever worked by human hands.
When I say that this is a new discovery, I am not kidding. In fact, the very first expedition to study these stones happened just a few months ago. Prior to this expedition, there were no known photographs of these megalithic stones. Archaeologist John Jensen is mystified by these ancient ruins, and the following is an excerpt from a post on his personal blog…
The super megaliths were found and photographed for the first time by Georgy Sidorov on a recent expedition to the Southern Siberian mountains. The following images are from Valery Uvarov’s Russian website.
There are no measurements given, but from the scale depicted by the human figures, these megaliths are much larger (as much as 2 to 3 times larger) than the largest known megaliths in the world. (Example: The Pregnant Woman Stone of Baalbek, Lebanon weighs in at approximately 1,260 ton). Some of these megaliths could easily weigh upwards of 3,000 to 4,000 tons.
Below, I have posted some of the images that he was referring to. As you can see, they are absolutely stunning…
Another very unusual thing about these stones is that they caused the compasses of the researchers to start behaving very strangely.
Some events that were happening during the autumn expedition could probably be called mystical. The compasses of the geologists behaved very strangely, for some unknown reason their arrows were deviating from the megaliths. What could this mean? All that was clear was that they came across an inexplicable phenomenon of the negative geomagnetic field. Could this be a remnant of ancient antigravity technologies?
Of course much more research needs to be done on this site.
Nobody knows who cut these stones or how old they are.
These megaliths reach well back into the mists of pre-history, so far in fact, that conjecture about their ‘builders’, methods, purpose and meaning is pure speculation, and as such, I would hesitate to offer any observation at all, other than to say our pre-historical past is richer than we ever dreamed.
These stones are likely to remain an unsolved mystery for a very long time.
But what is abundantly clear is that according to the commonly accepted version of history they should not be there.
And of course this is far from the only site around the world that contains massive megalithic ruins. Perhaps the most famous are the megalithic ruins at Baalbek, Lebanon…
The following is some information about Baalbek from one of my previous articles…
The ancient city of Baalbek is one of the greatest archaeological mysteries of all time. Located east of the Litani River in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, Baalbek is world famous for its exquisitely detailed yet monumentally scaled Roman temple ruins. In Roman times, Baalbek was known as Heliopolis (after the sun god) and it contained some of the largest and most notable Roman temples ever built. In fact, the Romans had constructed an extraordinary temple complex in Baalbek consisting of three separate temples – one for Jupiter, one for Bacchus and one for Venus. But what these Roman temples were built on top of is much more important. These Roman temples were actually built on top of an ancient 5 million square foot platform that was made from some of the largest stones ever used in any construction project in the history of the earth. In fact, the largest stone found near the Baalbek ruins weighsapproximately 1200 tons and is about 64 feet long. To put that in perspective, that is the equivalent of approximately 156 full size African elephants.
How people in ancient times were able to move such massive stones is a complete mystery. In fact, these giant construction stones were stacked so closely together that you can’t even fit a piece of paper between many of them. Many of the architectural feats found at Baalbek cannot even be duplicated with 21st century technology.
So how did they do it?
How did they move such massive stones to create a structure of such intricate precision?
Keep in mind that the base of the Baalbek ruins alone weighs approximately 5 billion tons.
Evidence continues to mount that very sophisticated technology was used in the ancient world.
These megalithic ruins are undeniable reminders of highly advanced ancient civilizations.
So who were they and what happened to them?
Could it be possible that they were wiped out by a massive global cataclysm such as a global flood?
INITIAL REPORT: June 7, 2014, Saturday // UFO Investigation. Time to be there: 2200 Hours // Location: Colfax, CA Activity: The UFO appears on a nightly basis. The occupant feels we will not have any problem seeing this UFO. Case Manager is Lori Schulz of The Dirt.
20:30 Hours – Emilliano Mooey Debudey and Mark Bales show up at my door. We loaded up the Rusty Anomaly (My Kia Forte) with telescope, night vision goggles, video cameras, digital cameras, glow sticks, flashlights, binoculars. Piling in the car are Deanna Jaxine Stinson, Mooey and Mark. We are headed up to Colfax to a private residence, where the occupant sees UFOs on a nightly basis. Point of rendezvous is the Red Frog, an establishment in Colfax. Colfax reminds me of one thing. In 1977, I was a firefighter stationed in Colfax with the California Division of Forestry, which is now called CAL-FIRE. In the wooded areas of Colfax, you get reports of UFOs, Bigfoot and other creepy creatures of the night. Maryfrances Smith – the occupant tells me how she once saw a terrified coyote run through her yard, being chased by something unknown.
Maryfrances Smith Story: The UFOs seem to appear frequently in the night skies above her home. On one particular night, she saw a disc shaped UFO and it shown a bright light into her home. During this evening at 8:08 pm, she feels she lost 45 minutes of time. Maryfrances says she has psychic abilities and at a young age she would have severe headaches and nosebleeds. Headaches and nosebleeds are at times an indication of abductions. Also, many abductees feel at a later time that they have psychic abilities. Maryfrances was so frightened by her experience, that she contacted MUFON and talked with Mary Barr. On other nights she saw figures and outlines of creatures that resembled Grays. On another night, she saw 4 alien women on her balcony with long dark hair. One of the alien women cavorted up a tree. She tells us that a chunk of flesh was taken from her buttocks, she has seen faces in the windows and her bed once shook violently.
UFO HUNTER ROLL CALL: Paul Dale Roberts – Team Leader – HPI Co-Owner; Deanna Jaxine Stinson – Co-Owner; Mark Bales, Lori Schulz; Josie Schulz; Carlee Bennett; Emilliano Mooey Debudey; Alaceo ‘Big Al’ Rosatano – Lead Investigator – Videographer. Maryfrances Smith – Occupant. Initial Meeting Spot: Red Frog in Colfax. See Red Frog here: https://plus.google.com/115828429513630813669/about?gl=us&hl=en
On this night Carlee and Josie saw 2 UFOs through the trees, they kept moving sideways to the right, back to the left, over and over again. It was so unusual, it startled them enough, where they wanted to go back inside the home.
During this long night of conducting a UFO investigation in the night skies of Colfax, we also tried to attempt communicating with Bigfoot with wood-on-wood communication. We were unsuccessful.
UFOs were not observed with our telescope, binoculars or night vision goggles. No UFOs were captured on film. Maryfrances has video footage of strange activity in and around her home. Strange fog, strange faces, strange lights, strange orbs as she describes them. We saw the videos and on some of the videos, there were strange appearances that may be unexplainable, while other videos there may be a natural explanation.
We also learned that this home was haunted. We captured some designer orbs with intricate designs inside the orbs themselves. We captured a designer orb with a distinct face inside the orb. Special Note: Orbs are not deemed paranormal, unless we can show intelligent movement. We captured 3 EVPs, where the entity is saying ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘yes’ again. Some investigators felt vertigo, or loss of balance. I felt very dizzy and a loss of balance when I was looking into the night sky with my binoculars. On this night, we investigated the large basement of this home. There is a creek that runs alongside this home that has a homemade bridge that goes over the creek.
STRANGE BLACK SHADOW ON DEANNA’S LEG: Deanna being a sensitive herself felt a burning sensation on her leg and when she took a picture of her leg a round dark shadow was engulfing her leg. Investigators tried to recreate this image and were unsuccessful.
THANK YOU! Thank you to Maryfrances for providing the crew with watermelon, Chinese cashews, tea; water; chips/salsa; blueberry bread and sugar cookies.
We got home at 0300 Hours – Sunday morning – June 8, 2014. I was so exhausted from driving, I hit the sack immediately. I usually work on the article while it is fresh on my mind, but in this case I was bushwhacked. In the morning Deanna woke me up with French toast and sliced bananas and strawberries. Deanna woke me up further by taking me, Princess Hannah and Hi-Pee aka HPI to the greenbelt on Franklin Blvd for a jog and walk.
SPECIAL NOTE: The forest in Colfax is the beginning of the Sierras, an area that has a reputation of the weird, such as a hunter who makes claim he killed a Bigfoot in the Sierras as seen here: http://bigfootevidence.blogspot.com/2011/10/sierra-kills-bigfoot-shooter-cracks.html – or the Green Valley Vortex that is rumored to have a buried pyramid, robots from a UFO chase out two high school kids, shadow people lurking in the trees, a tuberculosis graveyard, etc. UFOs are sighted constantly and many UFOlogists suggest that UFOs are attracted to 4 things – gold and other minerals, our DNA, our water and nuclear power plants. The Sierras does not have nuclear power plants, but it is known for gold and other mineral deposits and an abundance of water.
On this night, two investigators may have seen two UFOs, we did get some ghostly activity, so this night was a well-worth it night!
From ocean fireballs, to mythical apes and ghosts that only show up on film, these are 20 photos so mysterious, so impossible that it’s often said they shouldn’t exist at all. With modern technology we see more and more photos of great finds.
“We’re going to transfer power without any kind of wires,” says Dr Hall, now Chief Technology Officer at WiTricity — a start-up developing wireless “resonance” technology.
“But, we’re not actually putting electricity in the air. What we’re doing is putting a magnetic field in the air.”
It works like this: WiTricity build a “Source Resonator” — a coil of electrical wire that generates a magnetic field when power is attached.
Publisher’s Note:I came across this article is my Google Alerts. It is written by Mary-Ann Russon and is published on the International Business Times website. It is about a group of real Australian UFO Hunters and discusses how they train there investigations. Enjoy Dirk
An Australian group of UFO hunters has introduced in-house training and an examination, to ensure that its members know how to deal with the public properly, but the exam will not be added to the TAFE curriculum in the near future, as reported by the Australian media.
“Our first test was held on Sunday but its still in its infancy,” Ivan Rigoni, Victorian UFO Action's (VUFOA's) investigations case coordinator tells IBTimes UK.
“The test touches on preliminary research and investigation. It's an educational tool to help our investigators realise the difference between natural phenomena like meteors, stars, the lunar cycle, ball lightning and cloud formations, as opposed to man-made phenomena like weather balloons, aircraft and drones.
“The test also touches on how to write a report; how to conduct yourself with a witness, what questions to ask; and how to determine whether someone might be hoaxing or if it's a misidentified object.”
Their training manual is two inches thick and the group hopes to eventually be able to offer advanced investigation training to their members. However, while they wouldn't rule out making their qualification a formal one, it's not the most important thing.
Unidentified, not extra-terrestrial
VUFOA was started in 2008 by Andrew Arnold, a keen documentary maker who continues to document the group's cases in YouTube videos.
Anyone can join VUFOA – they just have to have a genuine interest in UFOs, pass the in-house test, and make an efffort to attend weekly meetings.
The group's main activities consist of investigating UFO sightings in Victoria, as well as researching and collating data on UFOs in a database and manning a 24-hour hotline for the public.
The 15-member strong team includes investigators, a disclosure document specialist with access to 240,000 previously classified documents from different countries, and a qualified in-house hypnotherapist, who is available to counsel citizens who claim to have been abducted by aliens.
However the group makes a clear distinction to demonstrate that it operates from a position of science.
“UFO stands for unidentified flying object, we don't perceive it as being extra-terrestrials,” explains Rigoni.
“We like tangible evidence that can be qualified and quantified. We tend to stay away from alien abduction. It's foolish to assume we're alone in the universe and we all presume [extra-terrestrials exist], but I've never seen or touched ET or an alien space ship.”
The group investigates about 150 cases a year of reported sightings of UFOs, and the hotline is most busy during winter and summer.
Often, people will call VUFOA claiming to see lights in the sky during the summer, says Rigoni.
However, these sightings are usually confused with the planet Venus, which is visible low in the sky, and as the Earth rotates, appears to move over half hour-to-hourly intervals.
Unsolved cases
Besides investigating new sightings, the group also looks into infamous UFO cold cases that have puzzled Australians for decades.
One of the cases they recently looked into was the Burkes Flat case, which is one of the most famous UFO incidents in Victoria's history.
Two men experienced a UFO encounter on two separate nights in 1966 in the same location. The first, Ron Sullivan, saw coloured floating lights in a field by the road. He also saw his car headlights bend off to the right, causing him to almost drive straight into a tree.
The Albanvale UFO, recorded on video last year by Ivan RigoniVUFOA
Unfortunately, the same thing is believed to have happened to another man, Gary Taylor, who was killed in a car accident when his car collided with the same tree two nights later.
When police investigated Sullivan's report, they found a shallow depression in the ground exactly where Sullivan saw the coloured lights.
Each member of VUFOA has seen an unidentified flying object and continues to search for answers, including Rigoni, who recorded seven minutes of footage last year of a strange floating object in Albanvale.
"Through history, the [Australian] government and authorities have willingly and knowingly hidden possible cases and occurrences to which they have no answer for," he says.
"I think that the perception of UFOs [in Australia] is changing. They're more accepting of it now. There are a lot of cases out there that don't get reported, but it's definitely getting bigger."

The main witness, Early Patterson saw 50 foot wide UFO that hovered 2-3 feet above Highway 82 at twilight, seemingly suspended on a “beam of light.” The primary witness car lights went out and the engine died when it was 100 yards from the craft. Another car stopped just behind him. A second UFO hovered about 60 feet above the first, illuminating it with a light. Both craft were similar, like inverted cups, and had greenish blue flashing lights. A catfish like creature came out from the top of the lower UFO, holding onto a handrail. It had gray, fish-like skin, a wide mouth, one glowing eye, flipper like feet and webbing between the legs like a “flying squirrel.” It had feather like objects on its back, which opened and closed when it moved.

Mermaid encounter, Russia 1974 (in a river!): Location. Chusovaya River, Perm area, Chelyabinsk region, Russia Date: August 25 1974 Time: night Alexander Kataev (a young boy, but already a seasoned hunter) was walking along the shores of the Chusovaya River when suddenly he heard someone floundering about in the water. He thought at first that it was a large fish, but when he heard strange mutterings he crept closer to the shore and lay down in the bushes. A few meters away in the water he saw a man and a woman that did not appeared to be normal ‘human’ beings. Both appeared to be gray in color, the female had long reddish curly hair and was obviously pregnant. The ‘man’ swam over to the bushes and retrieved a box which contained something inside, perhaps berries Alexander thought, that he gave to his mate. She seemed to be enjoying herself, waving, kicking and emitting an unnatural metallic laugh. Alexander watched as the strange beings began rubbing two rocks together near the weeds on shore apparently in attempt to start a fire, but only managed to create some sparks. They spoke to each other in strange high pitch voices resembling “Que-Que”. Eventually they tired and swam silently onto the opposite shore; they climbed out of the water and then quickly climbed up a rock cliff near the shore. Once on top they disappeared into the darkness.

Time: evening
The witness and his girlfriend were walking beside a local lake and saw what they thought was a fire or fireball on the far side of the lake. As they watched what they thought was a fire on the other side of the small lake (about 150 feet away) then noticed several short and “obese-looking” figures walking around the “fire”. His girlfriend said that they looked like “puffy or fat kids”. But he thought more that they looked like the “Michelin Man” because of how the arms were extended out and puffy looking. Approximately a minute or two later they noticed what the thought was a camera flash or an arc flash and the fiery sphere/ball lifted about 2 or 3 feet off the ground and turned into 2 fiery balls. Within a few seconds they watched as the one on the right slowly ascended into the sky on what looked like a set trajectory as it steadily ascended up and to the night sky until it was out of sight. Immediately after the first one disappeared, the second one ascended in the same trajectory. After the figures and the fiery spheres had disappeared, the witness said he wanted to take a look at the location where they had seen them in an attempt to find some evidence of the incident. After some convincing, his girlfriend agreed to go look with him, however they weren’t able to find anything as it was getting very dark and they weren’t prepared with flashlights. After a quick glance of the “landing” area they decided to go home and come back during the day. The next day he alone returned but had difficulty finding anything at all. He returned again that same evening to the shore line with a flashlight and began a “stakeout” of the area. Within minutes weird stuff started to happen. He heard all kinds of strange banging in the woods behind the shoreline where he stood, and almost immediately after the banging he heard a huge splash in the water. The splash frightened the witness since it was very close to him. He thought something had thrown a large boulder in the water. However his curiosity overcame his fear and he decided to stay and find out what was going on. A minute or two later he spotted along snake-like creature with a big head and shiny glossy eyes. This creature was not like any snake he’d ever seen and quickly realized this creature was responsible for the loud splash. He thought the loud splash was a “warning” to stay away. However, frightened but still curious the witness began to signal the “serpent” with his flashlight with 3 quick flashes at it, when he did this it would always come over to the shore within a few feet of him and swim by and create huge splashes. He got several good looks at it and could not compare it to any creature he had ever seen. This serpent-like creature would whip the water with its tail or possibly a wing as he could not see what was causing the splash as it always happened so fast. The creature did several “laps” back and forth to the area where he had seen the strange orbs and creatures the night before. He tried to get closer to the water and noticed that the creature never went under water and it always had its large head above the water. It was approximately 4 to 5 feet long and very thick looking. The witness says he saw weird “humps” and prehistoric-looking features on the creature’s body through the water. He saw this creature swim around for several nights and he claims that in October the creature was still in the lake. Eventually his girlfriend also saw the strange snake-like creature. He was not able to photograph it since it was always very dark. He thought the creature acted in an “intelligent manner”. He decided eventually to leave it alone.
A Canadian witness at Abbotsford, British Columbia, recalled a frightening experience with a silent, egg-shaped object that hovered nearby for three minutes before moving away at “warp drive,” according to June 6, 2014, testimony in Case 56883 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The events occurred in May 1975 as the reporting witness and a friend were walking home as they reached the crest of a hill facing north at the Sumas Mt. Road and Dawson Road intersection.
“As we crested this hill I noticed an object out of the corner of my eye,” the witness stated. “And as I looked to the west I saw this object – soft yellow – moving toward us. We stood there for about two minutes as it slowly moved toward us – arguing as to what it might be.”
The two quickly ruled out an airplane as it was moving too slow or a helicopter because it was not making any sound.“Well it keeps coming closer. Now keep in mind on Sumas Mountain at night if a neighbor dropped a tire iron the whole mountain top would hear it. This hill before the four corners is like a knoll where you could see back and then clearly to the west, north and clearly to the east.”
Then the object stopped directly in front of them and the two froze.
“I could hear my heart pounding in my chest. The vessel hovered for around three minutes. Then it starts to leave slowly at first. Then it went into like a warp drive. As it rose up the eastern mountain side it maintained the level of a plane. It seemed like it used the side of the mountain as a launch ramp.”
The witness described the object.
“It was egg-shaped but with a substantially flattened bottom – no visible ports or windows – no sound – not a wisp – no visible exhaust. Also it was the size of a small house – 30 to 50 feet in diameter.”
The object left a trail as it moved away.
“We lost sight as it hyper-drove into the night starlit sky. It actually left a steak of light and then went blink – like a star – and turned off.”
The reporting witness came forward after 39 years to recall an odd encounter at the intersection of Sumas Mt. Road and Dawson Road, pictured. (Credit: Google)
In other Canadian news, a witness reported a sphere-shaped object hovering in the clouds near St. Caltharines, Ontario, about 3:20 p.m. on June 6, 2014, in Case 56884.
Investigation is underway. Witnesses speak of the strange presence of a humanoid-type being in the beaches of Necochea on 20 May 2014 (date to be confirmed) at 23:00 hours (approx.).
It seemed to float, was very large as its strides were quite long. It was seen from an apartment in the coastal area at the beach resort itself. It moved along the beach, near the water, before vanishing abruptly. Before this, it appeared to fade away, as parts of its body would disappear.
It should be noted that this was an extremely cold evening and there was no one walking along the shore. On Sunday, 18 May, other people also witnessed a strange, man-like figure heading to the sea, to an illuminated site at the water's edge.
The sighting was also made from an apartment facing the shore. After 22:00 on that cold and rainy night, whatever was headed into the sea vanished along with the white lights on the berm.
Swiss scientists say they can prove beyond a doubt that the Lost City of Atlantis was on Mars, and its astronauts traded with ancient Egypt for a significant period of time! Even more incredible, they claim to have the evidence to show that the legendary King Tut died spectacularly in a space shuttle crash with an alien crew.
“The Martian Civilization destroyed itself or was destroyed by a meteor while Egypt was still in its prime,” Dr. Stephan Weisz told a gathering of reporters and scientists in Bern, Switzerland.
But the inhabitants left their mark both on Earth and Mars. Top secret photographs taken by America’s Martian probes clearly show the remains of temples on the surface of the planet.
“Egypt’s pyramids and the ability to mummify the human body are definitely the result of technologies that originated not on Earth but someplace else, in this case Mars. It is our belief that the Atlantans traded these technologies to the Egyptians for gold.”
Dr. Weisz and a colleague, Egyptologist Conrad Vetsch, said that a recently deciphered Egyptian scroll first led them to believe that Atlantis was located on Mars. The scroll describes a technologically advanced civilization existing beyond our own planet “in the vast, black ocean of space.”
It also alludes to space travel and the use of a shuttle craft to ferry manlike extraterrestrials from a space-bound mother ship to the surface of Earth.
“Researchers have long known that the Egyptians were exposed to flight because an elaborate model of what they called a glider was found in Tut’s tomb,” Dr. Weisz told the group. “In light of information gleaned from the scrolls, we now see that the glider was in fact the replica of a space shuttle. And it was just such a space craft that crashed with Tut aboard.”
Not everyone attending the conference agreed with the experts’ theories. Dr. Seth Rausch, a German historian, thinks they went too far in calling the Martian civilization Atlantis.
“I don’t doubt that the Egyptians were in contact with extraterrestrials,” said the expert. “But until we actually inspect the ruins on Mars, there is no way to know if they are the remains of Atlantis.”
“In my opinion, if Atlantis did exist, it existed here on Earth.”
Norwegian astronomer Elling Gade agreed.
“Atlantis might have been the colony of an alien civilization. But it most definitely was located on this planet,” he said.
How come none of these scientists were surprised about temples on Mars? How come these scientists seemed to know of scripts that possibly prove the inter action of ancient Egypt and aliens?
What else is it that the scientific elite are aware of, that we are not? Why is it that they think our history, and things that may determine who we are, are none of our concern? Or, is it just that they think the more secrets they have, the more important they are?
Time travelling and time machines have been a topic of science fiction and countless movies for many decades. In fact, it appears that the possibility to travel in time, either into the future or into the past, has appealed to the imagination of mankind for centuries. While many may think it is absurd to believe that we could travel back or forwards in time, some of the world’s most brilliant scientists have investigated whether it could one day be made a reality.
Albert Einstein for example, concluded in his later years that the past, present, and future all exist simultaneously, and most are familiar with his well-known concept of relativity. That is, that time is relative and not absolute as Newton claimed. With the proper technology, such as a very fast spaceship, one person is able to experience several days while another person simultaneously experiences only a few hours or minutes. Yet the wisdom of Einstein’s convictions had very little impact on cosmology or science in general. The majority of physicists have been slow to give up the ordinary assumptions we make about time.
However, if time travel really was possible, one can hardly contemplate what this may mean for humanity for whoever has the power to move through time, has the power to modify history. While this may sound attractive, it would be impossible to know the consequences of any alteration of past events, and how this would affect the future.
Time travel in ancient mythology
If we look into ancient texts we can find a number of references to time travelling. In Hindu mythology, there is the story of King Raivata Kakudmi who travels to meet the creator Brahma. Even if this trip didn’t last long, when Kakudmi returned back to Earth, 108 yugas had passed on Earth, and it is thought that each yuga represents about 4 million years. The explanation Brahma gave to Kakudmi is that time runs differently in different planes of existence. Similarly, we have references in the Quran about the cave of Al-Kahf. The story refers to a group of young Christian people, who in 250 AD tried to escape persecution and retreated, under God’s guidance, to a cave where God put them to sleep. They woke up 309 years later. This story coincides with the Christian story of the seven sleepers, with a few differences.
Another story comes from the Japanese legend of Urashima Taro. Urashima Taro was an individual who was said to visit the underwater palace of the Dragon God Ryujin. He stayed there for three days, but when he returned to the surface, 300 years had passed. In the Buddhist text, Pali Canon, it is written that in the heaven of the thirty Devas (the place of the Gods), time passes at a different pace where one hundred Earth years count as a single day for them. And there are many more references.
Scientific research
Probably the most well-known story of accidental time travel is the Philadelphia experiment which allegedly took place in 1943 with the purpose of cloaking a ship and making it invisible to enemies’ radar. However, it was said that the experiment went terribly wrong – the ship not only vanished completely from Philadelphia but it was teleported to Norfolk and went back in time for 10 seconds. When the ship appeared again some crew members were physically fused to bulkheads, others developed mental disorders, a few disappeared completely, and some reported travelling into the future and back. Allegedly, Nikola Tesla, who was the director of Engineering and Research at Radio Company of America at the time, was involved in the experiment by making all the necessary calculations and drawings and also providing the generators (however he wasn’t alive when the experiment took place, he died a few months before the experiment took place).
In 1960, we have another interesting case report of scientist Pellegrino Ernetti, who claimed that he developed a machine that would enable someone to see in the past, the Chronivisor. His theory was that anything that happens leaves an energy mark that can never be destroyed (something like the mystical Akashic Records). So he allegedly developed this machine that could detect, magnify and convert this energy into an image – something like a TV showing what happened in the past.
In the 1980s, there are reports of another controversial experiment, the Montauk project, which again allegedly experimented with time travel among other things. Whether the Philadelphia and Montauk experiments actually took place is still under debate. However, it is common sense to assume that the military would definitely be interested in the possibility of time travel and would engage in extensive research on the subject.
Moving on, in 2004, Marlin Pohlman applied for a patent for a method of gravity distortion and time displacement. Marlin Pohlman is a scientist, engineer, and member of Mensa with a Bachelor, MBA and PhD. And only last year, Wasfi Alshdaifat filed another patent for a space compression and time dilation machine that could be used for time travel.
Physicist Professor Ronald Lawrence Mallett of the University of Connecticut, is working on the concept of time travel, based on Einstein’s theory of relativity, and is absolutely convinced that time travelling is feasible. He predicts that human time travel will be possible in our century. Particle physicist Brian Cox agrees that time travel is possible but only in one direction.
We have the mysterious story of Ali Razeqi, managing director of the Iranian Centre for Strategic Inventions, who claimed that he developed a device that can see anywhere from 3 to 5 years in the future. His initial story disappeared from the internet a few hours after it was published.
In theory, time travel is possible, even if it is difficult to comprehend. Has the research cited above brought us closer towards making time travel a reality? If so, we can only hope that the technology does not get into the wrong hands.
According to this video just released by DarkSkyWatcher74, an alleged ‘insider’ who happens to be a Lieutenant Colonelwarns herein that ‘massive disclosure’ is coming soon and ‘aliens run the US government’. Talk of reptilians and ‘inner Earth’ abound in this video interview.
Is the information that you hear here REAL or just the figment of someone’s wild imagination? Is this a set-up for ‘Project Blue Beam’ or ‘legit information’ on par with recent comments made by Bill Clinton? Or, was Clinton just setting us up for Blue Beam as well?

UFO documentary reveals “humanoid of unknown classification”
UFO documentary reveals “humanoid of unknown classification”
A new documentary on UFOs, extraterrestrials, and advanced clean energy, hopes to provide evidence that the government has figured out how UFOs operate and are hiding advanced technology that can provide clean energy. The film also features the discovery of an alleged humanoid body whose DNA has been sequenced and found to be of an “unknown classification.” Photos of the being were released today with the announcement of the Hollywood premiere of the film scheduled for later this month. It was also announced that the film is narrated by actor Thomas Jane, who is known to have in interest in UFOs.
The new film is titled Sirius, and features the work of Dr. Steven Greer. With a similar goal as the film, Greer brought together a panel of highly credible witnesses who testified in front of representatives from all of the major media outlets at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. in May of 2001. At that time he filmed hours of testimony from hundreds of credible witnesses. His work has been very influential in convincing people that the government knows more than it is sharing, and as he puts it, “Once people understand that classified projects have figured out how UFO’s operate, they will realize we no longer need oil, coal and nuclear power. This is the truth that has driven the secrecy.”

One of the most shocking claims put forth in the film is that they have obtained, “paradigm shifting physical evidence of a medically and scientifically analyzed DNA sequenced humanoid creature of unknown classification found in the Atacama desert, Chile.” According to the filmmakers the credentials of the group of scientists and the medical team behind this claim are “eye-opening.” They believe that the announcement of their discovery could be “potentially profound and historical.”

The film is directed by Emmy Award winning Amardeep Kaleka. He won his Emmy in 2011 for his short film Jacob’s Turn, on a child with Down Syndrome. He explained why he would chose to work on such a controversial topic:
“Given the possibility that there was something profound to explore here – something that could potentially open minds to new realms and new possibilities – we seized the opportunity to take on this project. For every story we told, we found hundreds of others. Our goal is to initiate our audience on the same journey – to open their minds and inspire them to search – and freely consider that there is more in this world than we may ever know.”
Actor Thomas Jane, most recently known for his leading role in the HBO’s Hung, also shared why he chose to participate:
“The Sirius documentary is a powerful and important film that I encourage everyone to watch with an open mind, as it truly speaks to the heart of the people who like me, are probably okay with the government keeping secrets from its people in the name of national security, but are not okay with a secret government.”
The film is set to premiere in Hollywood on April 22, and will then be followed by a limited theatrical release. It will also be launched video on demand on the Yekra video platform and Yekra’s Affiliate Connect customized social media networks. The film’s funding was mostly obtained through crowd sourcing on the Kickstarter website, and according to the filmmakers press release it has been the “highest documentary crowd-funding raise in history.”
You can follow the film’s progress, and access the video on demand later this month via the film’s website: http://siriusdisclosure.com/.

Jill Tarter Explains in 30 Seconds Why We’re Searching for Aliens
Jill Tarter Explains in 30 Seconds Why We’re Searching for Aliens
After nearly four decades of of listening for for signs of life in the cosmos, astronomer Jill Tarter is one of a handful of true experts on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). And since 1995 we’ve known for certain there are other planets out there; the goal now is to find one that’s habitable.
“Exoplanets are real,” Tarter said recently, talking about how the Kepler planet-hunting mission has changed the concept of SETI. “We are now observing stars where we KNOW there are planets. We’ve gone from having 20-30 potential targets to having thousands of targets. Kepler is telling us WHERE to look, and we are focusing there.”
s ”and she gave them an answer in less than 30 seconds.
