There are several aspects that can be broken down into the multi-level approach to intelligence analysis. One of the primary prerogatives is sociological impact. We know now from recent revelations that the hysteria created during the Orson Wells broadcast of “War of the Worlds” in 1938 was indeed intended to monitor the public’s response to an ominous announcement of an invasion from a hostile extraterrestrial civilization. Obviously the results were nearly catastrophic. The havoc created by that one radio play regardless of the numerous reminders that it was merely a Fireside Theater radio performance made little difference to a listening audience that had experienced pandemonium.

Manipulating an unsuspecting public

Military analysts as well as sociologists learned very quickly just how easily such a reaction could be provoked from the public at large under the aegis of a sudden disclosure of disturbing proportions. No doubt this became the frame work for the US Air Force’s official approach to the UFO frenzy that was about to descend upon the American public a few years later from 1947 on. The use of military style intelligence strategy during Roswell ranged from disinformation to outright threats of physical violence. Mack Brazel was held in communicado after bringing artifacts from the UFO crash that occurred roughly 75 miles north of Roswell on that week in July 1947. Brazel was even coerced into retracting his statements on the local radio station by military interrogators.

Nonexistent evidence

Decades later researchers found that old base operation records at Roswell Air Field had been illegally destroyed once the DOA under the direction of Representative Steven Schiff, who vowed to settle the Roswell UFO mystery once and for all. It is clear that intentions were to scrub the Roswell incident from all sources possible and for years to come in order to marginalize any claims of the crash of an alien disk on Mack Brazel’s ranch on that stormy July evening in 1947. General Roger Ramey’s cover story of a weather balloon was implausible at best, but it served to quell the sensation of the initial Roswell Airfield public information release to the local radio station authorized by Base, Commander Butch Blanchard, who had ordered Lieutenant Walter Haute to deliver it. Thanks to quick thinking and the implementation of counter intelligence techniques the accidental disclosure of an alien crash in the New Mexico desert was conveniently thwarted.

Implausible explanations

During his tenure with Project Blue Book as a technical advisor, Astro Physicist, Doctor J. Allen Hynek used disinformation tactics under the direction of US Air Force high command to help derail any spectacular UFO sightings that could possibly alarm the public or divulge the existence of extraterrestrial life before the federal government and the Defense Department were ready to do so. Using such mundane explanations as swamp gas and the planet Venus, Hynek was usually able to head off any undue suspicion or detailed investigation by the mainstream media with few exceptions. Thanks to the intended marginalization of Project Blue Book by the Robertson Panel in 1953 another aspect of military intelligence was utilized known as compartmentalization. While Project Blue Book was transformed into a PR front for the Air Force the more serious cases that posed a threat to the policy of secrecy were funneled up the ladder to Wright Patterson AFB for further investigation.

Polishing deception

With the occurrence of still further crash events and dramatic UFO sightings to come, the US Air Force, CIA, and FBI along with other intelligence branches of the armed services were refining their approach to mitigation of the flying saucer dilemma. Fast response teams were formed, a policy of harsh intimidation was adopted onsite, and witnesses were discouraged or escorted from areas that were cordoned off as soon as possible. First hand witnesses at crash sites were quickly exposed to interrogation style treatment by military authorities to further intimidate and promote reluctance by the public to persist in reporting what they saw. Even military personnel ordered to respond to crash sites and conduct interviews of witnesses were they themselves subjected to denial, repudiation, aggressive debriefings, and even threats.

Pursuing lights in the forest

As the security personnel at RAF Bentwaters Strategic Air Command Base in Great Britain were soon to find out after several nights of chasing unidentified lights through the nearby Rendlesham Forest, security strike teams were subjected to hostile interrogations as well as mind altering drugs to scrub their memories. Some researchers say that one or more of the security personnel at Bent Waters came in contact with an alien presence after chasing down one ebony colored craft that had a sleek angular design. The security officer was reportedly stunned into unconsciousness while his companion registered missing time during the course of the bizarre event. Others, such as Colonel Halt, reported one alien space craft they had tracked accelerating skyward and splitting into multiple objects that displayed bright colors.

The Bentwaters Incident

Authorities involved such as Strategic Air Command’s intelligence branch and the British Int. Corps as well as the infamous M15 counter intelligence corps, who both used disinformation and denial to try and delegitimize any shred of truth that could have leaked to the public in the aftermath of the incidents. Such staged explanations as a supposed Apollo Mission recovery operation happened to be going on simultaneously as well the misidentification of a nearby lighthouse beam mistaken by Bent Waters security teams were used as questionable explanations for the series of disturbing events that went on just outside the perimeter of a SAC base that was later disclosed to have been harboring a secret nuclear weapons arsenal!

The nuclear attraction

Perhaps as has been the case at Sandia Weapons Storage and the Manzano Underground Facility at nearby Kirkland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico where frequent UFO sightings have occurred, RAF Bentwaters too became a focal point due to the unknown presence of their nuclear stockpile. Yet, ongoing intelligence operations were keen on maintaining secrecy at all costs even if it involved scrubbing the minds of their own base officers in order to conceal the truth. It seems that the intelligence game is just as ruthless as the enemies that it supposedly exists to counter in the event of a cold war or the outbreak of hostilities. Yet, the long legacy of military intelligence and the flying saucer will most likely continue for some time until a sincere effort at disclosure has been unveiled to the public.

In Part IV we will discuss some of the more regrettable actions taken against individuals considered a threat because of their disclosure of UFO evidence and the intelligence tactics used against them.

In the late Eighties and throughout the Nineties, alien abductions were at the heart of ufology. How did what might be regarded as a subset of ufology become its central meme? Abductions (irrespective of whether one believes they take place in a literal sense) could arguably be regarded as an evolution of the contactee phenomenon, and for those who believe UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft, it’s only logical that one should look beyond the vehicles and focus on the nature and agenda of the occupants. John Keel’s 1967 article “Never Mind the Saucer! Did You See the Guys Who Were Driving?” articulates this point perfectly, but it wasn’t until the publication of “Missing Time” (1981), “Intruders” (1987) and “Communion” (1987) that Keel’s question became the question most asked in the UFO community.

Of the three books mentioned, Whitley Strieber’s “Communion” did most to move alien abductions out of the ufological fringe and onto centre stage, and from there, into the mainstream public awareness. From there, things snowballed. Abduction plotlines were featured in “The X-Files” and a wide range of other TV shows and movies, while the image on the front cover of “Communion” became embedded in public consciousness, further boosted by the so-called alien autopsy film in 1995. In 2002 Steven Spielberg’s TV mini-series “Taken” illustrated that abductions were still big news and big business.

All this time, abductions were the central focus for much of the UFO community, and the three charismatic figures of Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs and John Mack were at the heart of things. While the centre of gravity was America, interest was global. My own book on the alien abduction mystery, “The Uninvited”, got to number seven in the UK hardback non-fiction chart, while the US mass-market paperback edition, published by Dell, was also a best-seller, clearly showing not only that abductions were the dominant force in ufology, but also that the subject had broken out into mainstream media and public awareness.

Now let’s fast forward to 2014. One hears comparatively little about alien abductions, even within the UFO community, where the main current areas of interest are government cover-ups, ‘Disclosure’, secret space program/‘breakaway civilization’, the Rendlesham Forest incident, and – perhaps most prominently of all – the resurgence of the ancient astronaut/ancient aliens hypothesis. What’s going on? There are a number of theories and it’s worth running through them.

At the extreme end of the belief spectrum, for those who think abductions take place in a literal, physical way, as many abductees claim, there’s the suggestion that the alien agenda is coming to its climax. Such people regard abductions as an extraterrestrial project, usually characterized as a human/alien hybridization program. If abductions have declined, or stopped altogether, does this not suggest that the program is coming to an end, or has finished? If this is the case, what happens next? Is some dramatic development just around the corner? It’s certainly food for thought.

There are, of course, some more prosaic possibilities. As a journalist and broadcaster, I know that interest in just about everything is cyclic. There comes a time when saturation point is reached and people lose interest, not least because pretty much everything there is to say has already been said. Whether this is reflected in, or driven by the media is open to debate, but editors and producers looking at abductions these days are inclined to say things like “that’s a bit passé”, or “this has all been done to death”. If this is the case, perhaps interest will return, just as interest in the ancient astronaut theory has returned. The TV show “Ancient Aliens” may have driven this resurgence, but it only worked because a new generation of people were genuinely interested in ideas that had been popularized back in the Seventies by authors such as Erich von Däniken.

What other factors could explain the lack of coverage and (apparent) lack of interest in abductions? One cannot overstate the influence of individuals when it comes to driving the agenda in a subject, whether they do so deliberately or not. Simply put, Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs and John Mack played a huge role in putting abductions centre stage within ufology, and now that Hopkins and Mack are both dead, the greater part of that impetus is gone. This is in no way meant to disparage the work of other ufologists and abductees, or downplay the continuing influence of writers such as Whitley Strieber, but there’s no getting away from the fact that the deaths of Hopkins and Mack dealt a hefty blow to abduction research.

There have been other assaults on the validity of abductions and the credibility of both abduction researchers and abductees. The debate over whether regression hypnosis can recover hidden memories, distort existing ones or even implant false ones was the first shot across the bows. Concerns about using regression hypnosis on abductees segued into wider concerns about the propriety of ufologists dealing with abductees. This was essentially a therapist/patient relationship in a situation where some of the people claiming abduction experiences (real or not) were extremely vulnerable. Were abduction researchers suitably qualified or otherwise equipped to deal with such people in a professional and ethical way? The allegations made by “Emma Woods” against David Jacobs brought that debate into focus, as did the criticisms made by filmmaker Carol Rainey regarding her former husband, Budd Hopkins. The recent arrest of self-described abductee Stan Romanek on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography may turn out to be the final nail in the coffin.

Alien abduction may be down, but it isn’t altogether out. Travis Walton remains popular on the conference circuit and hopes to see a remake of “Fire in the Sky”. Researchers such as Yvonne Smith continue to fly the flag for the subject, while this month’s “Contact in the Desert” conference in Joshua Tree has a panel discussion on the “contact experience”. This latter point is particularly noteworthy, because it seems that we’ve gone from contactees to abductees and now back to contactees – the more neutral term “experiencers” is sometimes used, but that’s another story. 

In all of this, here’s the key question about the apparent rise and fall of alien abductions: does it tell us something about the true nature of the UFO phenomenon, or does it tell us just as much – and maybe even more – about ufology and ufologists?

Recent programs on the History Channel and elsewhere on cable television have helped popularize the concept that extraterrestrials have been visiting Earth since time immemorial and have been responsible for many of the advancements of human civilization. Once the mainstay of writers such as Erich von Daniken, Brinsley Le Poer Trench and W.R. Drake, the concept has since inspired big budget movie epics and   television shows like “Ancient Aliens” and, more recently, “In Search Of Aliens,” hosted by the “wild-haired” Giorgios Tsoukalos. 

Steven Spielberg first burned images of the Ark of the Covenant into our collective imagination when his 1981 mega-hit “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was unleashed upon the public. The movie popularized the mysterious Ark for a more secular audience as Harrison Ford found himself in conflict with Nazi archaeologists who sought to conquer the world by using the supernatural powers of the Ark as a terrorist weapon. 

Recently, journalist Timothy Beckley and his always prolific publishing house Inner Light – Global Communications set out to explore the mysteries of the Ark and other super-weapons of antiquity to determine if the “sky gods” were behind the development of these highly advanced implements of destruction – or if humankind

had somehow been able to conjure them up on their own. 

Many questions arose, which Beckley and crew attempted to sort out during the course of their dissertation, such as:  

When God instructed Moses and the Israelites to construct the Ark of the Covenant, could they have understood the awesome, death-dealing technology it contained?

Did ancient India, like the Old Testament Jews, possess weapons of mass destruction? The new book contends that nuclear weapons or a method of kinetic bombardment were a standard component of the arsenal of people living many thousands of years ago. 

Read about weapons that appear on the surface to be rather commonplace, such as a simple sword or bow and arrow, but which are in fact supernaturally transformed by the gods into miraculous instruments of combat. 

Does archeological evidence exist today that proves nuclear war took place in ancient times, negating our belief that atomic weapons did not exist until the 20^th century? Was space travel another forgotten achievement of a people long ago consumed by the passing millennia? Did they leave spaceports behind as a sign of the technological prowess that helped them reach the stars?  

In his introduction to the newly released book from Global Communications, “The Ark of the Covenant and Other Secret Weapons of the Ancients,” editor and author Timothy Green Beckley writes: “The Ark of the Covenant has always been an object of great wonderment. Biblical scholars have debated its uses for years, while the public fantasizes about its powers. Moviemakers have attempted to tell the story of this gleaming gold artifact in epic fictionalized form. Made to be a receptacle in which the Ten Commandments given Moses could be safeguarded, the Ark also had the power to destroy the enemies of the Israelites.” 

Beckley goes on to explain that he met researcher and writer David Medina in the 1970s when Beckley was visiting the UK to speak before the House of Lords UFO group. Medina presented Beckley with his privately printed manuscript on the Ark and asked Beckley’s help in giving it wider distribution. Beckley subsequently published Medina’s book and was pleased with the limited but positive reception it received.  

Recently, Beckley decided to publish a new edition, this time with additional chapters written by Beckley’s usual robust stable of writers. The new book focuses not just on the Ark of the Covenant but also examines other high-tech weapons created by what we have been taught are vastly more primitive societies. Thus the “Other Secret Weapons of the Ancients” part of the new book’s title. 

THE ARK AND ITS ENIGMATIC CAPABILITIES

The book opens with the reprint of David Medina’s original text. Medina gives an account of the building of the Ark of the Covenant, based on verses from the 25^th chapter of the Book of Exodus, as well as describing other elements that went along with it, such as the tent specifically constructed to house the Ark. 

It fell to Moses’ brother Aaron, in his role as high priest, to tend to various ceremonies and rituals related to the Ark. Aaron and his sons, who often assisted their father with his priestly duties, were required to wear special clothing while in the Ark’s presence. It has long been speculated, by Medina and numerous other writers before and since, that the special clothing was not a simple matter of priestly ceremonial garb but was instead specifically intended to protect Aaron and his sons from high levels of radiation. Because of that danger, no one else was permitted near the Ark. There are incidents recorded in the Bible in which disobedient Israelites ventured close to the Ark anyway and were subsequently struck dead by the device or died lingering deaths from radiation sickness. 

It is also theorized that the Ark could generate high voltage electricity and serve as a two-way radio to the heavens. How did some pieces of acacia wood, some gold overlay and a few other components readily available to the Israelites, who were essentially wandering nomads in the desert, accomplish this technological wonder? That is part of the fascination of Medina’s analysis of the Ark of the Covenant and the details are better left for those reading the Global Communications book to discover for themselves.

THE UFOS OF INDIA AND THEIR DEADLY PAYLOAD

But the formidable Ark was not the only high-tech weapon of the ancient world. As part of Beckley’s aforementioned stable of writers, I contributed a chapter to the new book on the weapons of ancient India. A great deal of the mythology of ancient India is taken up with a form of flying craft called a “vimana,” whose origin is unclear. Some Sanskrit writings say the vimanas were manmade but available to only a rich and elite part of the population. Other writings say the vimanas belonged to the gods and served to house ascended holy ones in luxury dwellings in the sky. 

But whatever that mystery may involve, the relevance to the new book lies in the fact that the vimanas were used to deliver and deploy super-weapons similar to our nuclear missiles. In the midst of a conflict between two ancient royal families, called the Kuruhshetra War, a projectile called a “Brahmastra” was launched from a vimana flying overhead. According to the scripture called the “Mahabharata,” the missile, also called the “Iron Thunderbolt,” produced “an incandescent column of smoke and fire, as brilliant as a thousand suns,” and reduced the enemy combatants to ashes. “The corpses were so burned as to be unrecognizable. The hair and nails fell out; pottery broke without cause; and the birds turned white. After a few hours, all foodstuffs were infected.” 

All of which is familiar to modern readers as the consequences of the radiation-saturated aftermath of a nuclear blast. As an eerie addendum, 20^th century archeologists uncovered evidence that certain cities in the Indus Valley region had been completely destroyed, with people lying dead in the streets. Some kind of “sudden doom” had decimated these cities, killing the entire population and leaving no survivors to bury the dead. 

LETHAL FORCE WITHOUT THE MESSY CONSEQUENCES

There is little disagreement among scholars of the subject that some kind of death-dealing technology was available to the ancients that is easily comparable to nuclear weaponry. But author Olav Phillips begs to differ about all that. While he refers to the same passages of the Mahabharata as most scholars do, Phillips argues that the weapons in question may not have been nuclear. 

The “Iron Thunderbolt” of the Kuruhshetra War may instead have been an example of “kinetic bombardment,” Phillips contends, or the use of super-dense chunks of material dropped at terminal velocity from orbit or high altitude. Kinetic bombardment would produce the same effects as a small-scale nuclear device minus the radiation. Those effects would include an enormous fireball and a tremendous shockwave that would radiate outwards from the impact site. Phillips believes this explains the decimated cities discovered by archeologists in the Indus Valley.   

“The superheated shockwave and concussive force wall,” Phillips writes, “would explain the collapse of structures and the scorching.”

Phillips goes on to say that kinetic weapons are easy to target since their firing angle can be computed from orbit. He says modern weapons developers are working on something called “Project Thor” or the “Rods From God,” a system which hurls telephone pole-sized tungsten rods from orbit for the purpose of targeted, non-nuclear strikes. 

Military planners have been working on the idea since the 1950s, and there exists a 2003 US Air Force report suggesting that a tungsten cylinder six meters long impacting at Mach 10 has the equivalent kinetic energy of 11.5 tons of TNT. The idea is to deploy a lethal weapon with mass destructive force that does not have a long lasting global environmental impact. Phillips believes the combatants in the Mahabharata must have reached a similar conclusion, that a large-scale nuclear exchange would permanently destroy the very land they seek to possess, so they too opted for a devastating weapon that would not cause long-term ecological damage.

SWORDS WITH A MAGICAL EDGE 

Publisher Timothy Green Beckley takes up the subject of magical swords, swords that were not mere steel attached to a hilt but were instead handed down by the gods to aid mortals in combat. One finds this idea in numerous Greek myths, such as when Perseus was given a sword by the gods to slay the monster Medusa, she who had hair made of snakes and scales invincible to human-made weapons. 

Also included is a brief retelling of the legend of King Arthur’s sword “Excalibur” and how it blinded his opponents with its brightness. Meanwhile, the scabbard that stored Excalibur had healing powers and would prevent its bearer from bleeding to death. Excalibur can only be brandished for good purposes or it is useless. It prevents those who wield it from lying and inspires courage in all who follow in its path. 

Well-known writers Brad Steiger and Tim R. Swartz provide chapters for “The Ark of the Covenant and Other Secret Weapons of the Ancients” as well. Steiger talks about the archeological evidence found throughout the world for prehistoric nuclear war while Swartz declares that the ancients may have achieved space travel and bolsters that contention with still more archeological evidence. 

“The Ark of the Covenant and Other Secret Weapons of the Ancients” is profusely illustrated, thanks mainly to the efforts of writer and graphic designer William Kern, who packs the pages with Biblical art relevant to the story of the Ark as well as paintings depicting the flying craft and weaponry of Indian mythology. The book is an excellent and original approach to the subject of Ancient Astronauts and their technological revelations to early mankind that will have you shaking your head in wonderment even as you shudder at the destructive force we are capable of with a little help from above.
