UFO mania: Recent crop circle predicts solar event on 9/9/14?
New amazing Crop Circles have appeared in:
Parkers Hill Plantation, nr Cherington, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. Reported 27th July.
Green Street, Nr Avebury, Wiltshire, United Kingdom. Reported 29th July.
Roundway Hill, Nr Devizes, Wiltshire, United Kingdom. Reported 30th July.
Especially the circle near Roundway Hill in Wiltshire is a weird circle with lots of surprises. It shows the geocentric locations of planets, Mars, the Moon and the Sun in our solar system.
The geometric work in the circle seems to refer to an unexpected astronomical event on 9-9-14 (September 9, 2014).

In “United States of Secrets,” a two-part series airing May 13 & 20, FRONTLINE reveals the dramatic inside story of how the U.S. government came to monitor and collect the communications of millions of people around the world—and the lengths they went to trying to hide the massive surveillance program from the public.
Police are investigating after a human skull was found among donations to a charity store.
Medical examiners say the skull is from an adult who died within the last two years.
The cause of death is unknown, and medics don’t know if the skull is from a man or woman.
Goodwill store staff discovered the skull as they were sorting through donations to the outlet in Austin, Texas.
Austin police say they don’t believe foul play was involved, and think the skull may be from a private collection.
Detective Derek Israel said: “We think it was probably something that belonged to the person who donated it, and it was part of a collection or an anatomical model or something like that.
“It could have been something that was kept by someone who was a student of medicine, dentistry, any of those things.”
Goodwill has 31 stores in Austin and 40 donation centres, and has had other unusual gifts in the past.
A spokeswoman said: “We have gotten prosthetic limbs. We have gotten Rolex watches. We have gotten Krugerrands. Our donations run the gamut.” – Mirror
I’m ready to share something quite unnerving that just happened to me last Sunday. So, some background. I drive a ’98 Toyota Rav4 which has certainly seen better days, my grandfather was the one that used to drive the SUV before it was handed down to me. So, it got into his head that we should maybe give the Rav some love, give it a fresh coat of paint on the front and rear bumpers.
Here we are then, my grandpa just getting the finishing touches on the Rav while I just idly watch him work when something at the distance catches my attention ( I live in a closed neighborhood, my house being at the end of the street so any car that enter must turn right in front of the house ) another Rav4 identical to mine comes driving down the street, what a coincidence I think, it just so happens that when it passed in front of me I caught a glimpse of the driver, it was, well me, driving a Rav that was already painted; the driver just looked back at me, our gazes crossed, he didn’t give me a nod of acknowledgment or something, he just stared at me for a few seconds, made a u-turn and left.
I was left astounded to say the least, this guy, which I could swear looked just like me, driving the same car at me, just drove past my house, stared at me for a few seconds at leaved. I didn’t tell my grandpa of the other guy, seeing as how he didn’t even notice the car because he was to busy painting.
Do you guys have any idea as to what this may mean? Is he like a doppelganger or something, my mind playing me some sick joke? – Reddit.com
That Time Lloyds of London Insured The Loch Ness Monster
In 1971, Cutty Sark offered an award of one million pounds ($2.4 million) to anyone who could capture the Loch Ness Monster. But, the whiskey manufacturer began to get cold feet, so it asked Lloyds of London to underwrite the contest. The insurance company agreed, with the condition that it would get to keep Nessie.
To this day, nobody is certain why Cutty Sark came to believe that someone might actually reel in the mythical, Scottish sea creature. Still, this was the 1970s, when Nessie-mania was reaching a peak and scientific expeditions were searching the dark depths of the 22-square-mile, freshwater loch. (The late monster-hunter, Robert Rines, took an underwater photo deemed so convincing that scientists at Harvard and the Smithsonian Institution expressed serious interest.)
Perhaps that’s also why Lloyds of London initially turned down the request to accept Cutty Sark as a client. A spokesperson for the firm stated that, “The Risk is too great.”
But, after a barrage of news reports that the unflappable Lloyds had “chickened out,” the insurance company reversed its decision.
“Everybody was saying that our underwriters were refusing to insure and that got our backs up,” the spokesperson said a week later.
The contract between Lloyds and Cutty Sark stated:
“As far as this insurance is concerned, the Loch Ness Monster shall be deemed to be:
In excess of 20 feet in length.
Acceptable as the Loch Ness Monster to the curators of the Natural History Museum, London.
In the event of loss hereunder, the monster shall become the property of the underwriters hereon.”
Since Lloyds had no way to calculate the probability that Nessie would be captured, it charged an outrageous premium that far exceeded the reasonable probability of loss.
Still, Cutty Sark signed. And Lloyd’s made a nice profit, since the Loch Ness Monster was never caught. Or, so we’ve been led to believe – io9
Execution by Elephant: Ancient Capital Punishment in India
The death penalty is one of the oldest methods of criminal sentencing. Although different countries have had equally gruesome methods of inflicting the highest form of punishment, India had one of the most brutal methods of criminal torture: execution by elephant.
Designed to demonstrate to the people that even the awe-inspiring power of nature was under the iron grip of the emperor, execution by elephant — or gunga rao, as it’s called in India – became a choice method for capital punishment during the Middle Ages and continued well into the 19th century. Although the execution method was thought to have originated in ancient Rome, the practice of stomping the punished via elephant became popular in both western and Southeast Asia and in India. However, this method of execution declined as the British Empire grew in power.
Sources say that Hindu and Muslim leaders executed citizens for tax evasion, rebellion, and being enemy soldiers alike. Thieves and Mongol prisoners were also punished by death.
As for the elephants, they were often trained to “instantly crush [the offender] to atoms … but if it was desired to torture him, the elephant would break his limbs successively, as men are broken on the wheel,” observed Robert Kerr, a writer from the 19th century.
Crushing the victim, however, was not the only method of elephant-inflicted torture. According to François Bernier, a French traveler who witnessed such executions in the Mughal sultanate of Delhi, the elephants were also capable of slicing the prisoners to pieces “with pointed blades fitted to their tusks.”
Another traveler who visited Delhi in the year 1330, Ibn Mattuta, witnessed and recorded his account of the event, stating: “If the order was to cut him to pieces, the elephant would do so with his irons, and then throw the pieces among the assembled multitude. But if the order was to leave him, he would be left lying before the emperor, until the skin should be taken off, and stuffed with hay, and the flesh given to the dogs.” – weirdasianews
Firefighters were called in to rescue two people after their home was invaded by giant hornets.
The couple were forced to barricade themselves in their bedroom after a large nest, which was filled with hundreds of the enormous flying insects, fell through the ceiling from the attic above.
The terrified pair ended up calling the fire brigade and had to be rescued by ladder through their bedroom window.
The incident took place in the UK where this particular species of hornet, which is from Asia, has only recently started to appear.
Measuring up to 6cm in length and with a stinger 6mm long, these giant wasp-like creatures are responsible for killing dozens of people every year and have been gradually making their way westwards since hitching a ride to France in a shipment of pottery from China back in 2004.
Last year 1,600 people were injured and 41 were killed by the insects in China’s Shaanxi province with similar figures reported in other parts of the country as well as in Japan. – maidenhead-advertisor
The Daily Mail paper reported “A pilot and his co-pilot have spotted a mysterious orange and red glow over the Pacific Ocean. The strange lights were spotted south of the Russian peninsula Kamchatka during the flight of a Boeing 747-8 from Hong Kong to Anchorage, Alaska. ‘Last night over the Pacific Ocean, somewhere South of the Russian peninsula Kamchatka I experienced the creepiest thing so far in my flying career,’ he said.”

The Utah arm of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) is analyzing video shot by an Ogden witness who captured multiple orbs “moving like a school of fish or birds” across the sky, according to testimony in Case 56393 from MUFON witness database.
The witness was outside watching the moon about 9 p.m. on May 15, 2014, when movement was noticed in the sky that first appeared to be a drone.
The witness uploaded one video with the MUFON report, which was filed on May 18, 2014. The video is currently being analyzed.

Ogden is a city in and the county seat of Weber County, population 82,825.
Utah State Director Erica Lukes is investigating. Utah has a current UFO Alert Rating of 5 with a low number of recent reports nationally. Utah had 4 UFO reports in August 2014 – the 38th highest reporting state – while California had 99 reports as the highest reporting state. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.
The UFO Alert Rating System is based on five levels – 1 through 5 – where states with 150 or more reports for the month are rated an Alert 1; states with 100 or more reports are rated an Alert 2; 25 reports or more for the month are rated an Alert 3; 13 or more reports are rated an Alert 4; and those states with less than 13 reports for the month are an Alert 5.
UFO researchers say UFO sightings are increasing in the state of Queensland in Australia. Recent sightings have included photos and video.
UFO Research Queensland President Sheryl Gottschall told the Brisbane Times there has been a spike in reports over the last few months. She says, “We get about 100 calls a year and across Australia all up the UFO research groups get up to 800. That’s just the reported sightings – a lot go unreported.”
Another representative from the Queensland UFO group agrees. In a radio interview with 4BC, Tino Pezzimenti says, “Only about 5% of reports or sightings actually get reported, so you can imagine. We get a couple hundred a year. That’s only probably 5% of people that actually find their way to reporting something to us.”

Pezzimenti says many of these are not just reports of lights in the sky. Some of the sightings come with photos or video.
The hosts of 4BC said they had heard many sightings are due to a large local event called the Royal Queensland Show, aka Ekka (referred to as “the exhibition” in the radio show). The event is Queensland’s largest annual event, attracting hundreds of thousands of guest from around the world. It includes farm animal, food, and strength competitions, among other events, and takes place in early August.
Pezzimenti admitted that many UFO reports are misidentifications. He cited a recent sighting in mid-July in which the police suggested the mysterious lights were actually due to the testing of the fairground lights in preparation for Ekka.
However, Pezzimenti says their organization is not quick to call everything a UFO. He explains, “To be a UFO it’s got to have to do something unusual or look unusual like this photograph, or it does a 90 degree turn, or it flies off faster than any jet we have ever heard and there’s not even a sonic boom.”
The photograph Pezzimenti refers to is a sighting he is particularly excited about. The photo was allegedly taken on Friday, May 23, 2014 in the Wooloowin area at 5:35 pm. It shows what appears to be a strange disk-shaped object in the sky.

Pezzimenti says the object does not appear to have engines or propellers. He says this kind of photographic evidence needs to be taken “pretty seriously.”
The image was posted on a Facebook page called Brisbane UFO Sightings, which was created recently for the founder of the page to post pictures of UFOs. Apparently, he or she captures them often. Other than the date, time, and location of the sighting, no other information is provided.
Other videos can be seen in the interview with 4BC and Pezzimenti, embedded in the Brisbane Times article.

The increase in sightings has lead to a local resident to begin holding skywatches. Kristy Buist, founder of the Paranormal Awareness Community, had her first skywatch scheduled for earlier this week.
Buist told the Brisbane Times she has had four sightings of her own. She described the first as, “platinum and sort of shaped like diamonds just casually floating across the sky”.
Now she says, “I do look for UFOs often. I look for them wherever I go.”
Brisbane Times says participants at the skywatch look for “‘unusual movement’ in the night sky, including ‘classic’ UFO moves such as bright lights travelling from one horizon to another in seconds or lights making sudden turns.”
Photos from the skywatch were posted on UFO Research Queensland’s Facebook page, but none of them include UFOs. However, as their Facebook page says, “Skywatching calls for a lot of patience and persistence.”
Both of which I am sure local researchers will continue to practice as they continue their quest for UFO evidence, which, incidentally, remains elusive despite the increased reports.
Wall, NJ – 3/19/2014 – unedited: I didn’t see the craft. I am trying to submit my story but this program is making fill in info about the craft. The Greys were already coming up my driveway with what appeared to be white flashlight like wands coming to the house. Amber, Green and blue lights started to pulse just outside my bedroom window as I looked out of it. The one closest Grey was not more than 10 feet outside my bedroom window. He stopped, looked directly at me with red glowing eyes. I could make out the outline of his head. I communicated telepathicly with it. As the lights kept changing, I told him that blue was cool. Blue was cool…Then all the other colors stopped and the lights in the driveway went all cool blue….I was getting communication without words in my brain. I just said to it, Please don’t hurt me and I will come outside to meet you if you want. (I know they can abduct you anytime if the really want to). My girlfriend saw the lights and everything. Got scared and hid under the covers in bed. I then got dressed, went outside cautiously to meet them, and they were gone. Poof! True event. Swear to god. I believe the message to me was that they will be back for me sometime soon for who knows what? I was scared s**t but was not afraid at the same time. If they want you, there is nothing you can do about it. – MUFON CMS
Volusia County — A 13-year-old girl is recovering after being bit by a shark on Sunday in New Smyrna Beach.
Beach Safety officials say the girl was swimming near the 2400 block of North Atlantic Avenue when she was bit on the calf causing a small puncture wound.
The girl was body surfing when the incident occurred, and was in what officials described as waist-deep water.
The shark was not seen by lifeguards, other swimmers in the area or beachgoers nearby.
According to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Public Information Officer Tamra Marris, this was the sixth shark bite this year. – MyNews13

The 37-year-old was given a zero chance of survival after he was born with the astonishing condition, but he has defied medical odds to become an inspirational public speaker.
Claudio suffers from various disabilities, including badly deformed legs, almost no use of his arms and hands and his neck folded back on itself.
Doctors had given up hope of his survival shortly after his birth and even told his mother, Maria Jose, to stop feeding him.
But this inspirational man, from Monte Santo, Brazil, has proven them all wrong by overcoming his extreme disadvantages to graduate from university as an accountant and become a public speaker.
He said: “Since I was a child I’ve always liked to keep myself busy and work – I don’t like to depend totally on other people.
“I do a bit of accounting, research for clients and consulting.

Some close viewers of Fox 2′s nightly newscast in St. Louis, Missouri noticed an unknown object quickly shoot through the sky on Monday, September 1.
During the broadcast, footage from the Fox 2 roof camera shows an active lightning storm resulting from the area’s severe weather. The station describes that “during that shot something flashes across the screen. The flying object is illuminated by flashes of lightning. In the blink of an eye it is gone.”
Viewer David Whitener posted a video clip to Facebook from the newscast showing the unknown object shooting through the sky. He posed the question, “What was that shooting across the screen did anyone else see that?” Some offered suggestions like meteors and alien spacecraft. One commenter chimed in, stating, “It is said that during thunder storms UFO sightings increase.”

FOX 2 producer Kevin Pope and reporter Andy Banker examined the footage in question. After reducing the playback speed of the video, they conclude that the UFO is a bird illuminated by the lightning.
What do you think? Does the “bird” suggestion explain the mysterious object seen in the video? Share your thoughts by posting a comment below or by posting on the Open Minds Facebook page.
SAUCER SHAPED CRAFT PHOTOGRAPHED OVER AUSTRALIA MAY 23, 2014 ……. WOOLOOWIN AUSTRALIA
A saucer-shaped object photographed at Wooloowin on Brisbane’s north side should be taken “pretty seriously.” The truth is out there – and maybe it is hovering over Queensland. here has been a spike in the number of reported UFO sightings across the state over recent months, according to president of UFO Research Queensland Sheryl Gottschall, with the Gold Coast being a real “hot spot.” “We’ve had people calling from all over Queensland,” Ms Gottschall said. “There was a sighting on the Gold Coast on Friday night, Cairns last week and there was another sighting in Childers. “We get about 100 calls a year and across Australia all up the UFO research groups get up to 800. That’s just the reported sightings – a lot go unreported.” One photograph reportedly taken over Wooloowin on May 23 shows a silver disc hovering in the sky. There is also a letter from police dated July 18 in response to a call to investigate “three bright white lights hovering low” over homes in Wooloowin. The police concluded the lights were “presumed to be the result of EKKA lighting tests” but were of “unknown origin.” Ms Gottschall, who claims to have seen five UFOs and experienced one extraterrestrial “close encounter” in her lifetime, says there has been an ever increasing interest in UFOs and extraterrestrial life, which has resulted in the formation of “skywatch” groups. On Monday night, Ms Gottschall will attend a skywatch at Kurwongbah, just west of Brisbane, organised by Kristy Buist, founder of the Paranormal Awareness Community. Ms Buist, a 35-year-old from Redcliffe, saw her first UFO aged 11, when a fleet of three flew over her primary school at Gunnedah, NSW. The flying objects were also seen by a teacher, who happens to be her step-father. Since then, Ms Buist has experienced three more “definite” sightings. “I do look for UFOs often. I look for them wherever I go,” she said. “There’s always ifs and buts, but I’ve had four definite sightings in my lifetime.” Ms Buist described the fleet of UFOs she first saw as silent and “platinum and sort of shaped like diamonds just casually floating across the sky.” KEN’S NOTE: The real photos below were taken in 2014. Witness said: 26/08/14 – I was in Sardinia. I just arrived in a nice hotel, before coming back home. I was about to take a bath in the swimming pool, when I noticed several huge lights in the sky. I took my iPhone, and recorded them. After watching the video on my PC, I also noticed a strange dark triangular craft, hovering next to the lights. It was certainly monitoring them. When the lights disappeared, the craft accelerated and certainly followed them. I’m sure it was some sort of escort, as there’s obviously a link between that craft and these lights. It’s a landing.
The lights were super huge, almost stunning to the eye. They descended fairly quickly behind the mountain, getting lower and lower, and further and further. It means these are physical objects, and probably some type of motorized device. You may think — and I did too — that these are Chinese Lanterns, but if you reflect a bit you’ll understand that Chinese lanterns don’t behave like that, and absolutely don’t look like that, overall in broad daylight.
Witness said: Bright yellow light appeared suddenly in sky, hovered and then started moving slowly. I was on my break at a gas station at the corner of 14th Street and Spring Street, looking up into the sky towards the north. Bright yellow light suddenly appeared in the direction I was looking, just above the trees, about a half or mile away. Then I grabbed my camcorder started taping and object started moving. At first it was hovering in same spot for about 5 minutes then it started moving, downward, when I started recording. At first I thought it was the reflection on a plane but it didn’t move. I look at planes all the time since I work around the airport. It was not a plane, not a blimp, or a helicopter. I finally lost sight of it as it desended and was obscured by the trees.
Witness said: On this video you will see a Formation of what appears to be Energy U.F.O Balls of Light traveling overhead….As you can see on the video they appear to be high above the clouds. At first they seemed to Hover as the Clouds Pass underneath.I continue to film as i zoom in they seem to be emitting some kind of glowing energy. At some point they began to travel until out of sight…In my opinion these objects were clearly no aircraft or satellite..
Foto: David Stanley
Sommige koningen werden gemummificeerd, terwijl anderen werden gecremeerd.

Campaign to clear the name of Devon witches hanged for dabbling in the occult
A campaign has been launched to clear the name of the last three witches hanged in England – who met their fate in Devon.
The infamous trio, knows as the ‘Bideford Witches’, were put to death in 1682 for supposedly dabbling in the occult.
Temperance Lloyd, Susannah Edwards and Mary Trembles became the last three people hanged in England for witchcraft.
But historians and MPs claim they were targeted because they were old and suffered dementia.
A new campaign to have them officially pardoned has been launched to mark the largest ever gathering of witches together.
The event, the Grand Witches Tea Party, will see hundreds gather at Rougemont Castle in Exeter, Devon – 322 years since they were hanged in August 1682.
Modern witch Jackie Juno, 51, hopes the campaign will persuade Exeter City Council to take them seriously and reconsider.
She said: “By getting them pardoned we are making a statement that this bigoted behaviour should not be tolerated nowadays.
“It would prove that humanity could change for the better. It would also be laying the women to rest in a way that resolves the mistakes of history.
“If you were unmarried or childless or sometimes simply owned a cat you were regarded with suspicion.”
Records show Lloyd was accused of “having discourse or familiarity” with the devil and “having used some magical art, sorcery or witchcraft”.
Edwards and Trembles, who both lived with her, were also arrested before all three were executed at Exeter Prison in Devon.
Historians say the women were convicted on hearsay evidence, which included one of them being accused of turning into a magpie.
Even the justices at the time did not believe they were guilty but were forced to respond to an angry mob that was baying for a hanging.
Last year author Christine Nash set up an online petition to call for their public pardon but despite support, which included Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, it was unsuccessful. – Plymouthherald
An interesting development in the last few hours at the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF): a short statement has been posted to their website under the title “Los Angeles Office Closed”, advising that the headquarters of the organisation is moving across the country to Virginia. Oh, and also as an aside (in a statement released at the end of a long weekend) that the President of the organisation, D.J. Grothe, “is no longer with the JREF”!
In order to achieve cost-savings and greater efficiency, the Los Angeles office of the JREF has closed effective September 1, 2014. All operations have been moved to Falls Church, Virginia.
DJ Grothe is no longer with the JREF. James Randi has taken over as acting President.
This restructuring is part of an enhanced educational agenda aimed at inspiring an investigative spirit in a new generation of critical thinkers by engaging children and their parents, as well as educators and the general public, in how to think about the many extraordinary claims we hear every day.
A funny thing happened while Tim Bennett weed-whacked on a Scottsville farm two weeks ago: a big black cat crossed his path.
It was a really big black cat.
“He was all black, had a round face and long, black tail,” said Bennett, a seasoned woodsman who runs a landscaping business near Scottsville.
Bennett is pretty sure the cat was a black cougar, the elusive cousin of the elusive mountain lion that has been reported in a variety of Virginia mountain counties but has yet to be proven to exist.
Cougar sightings are commonplace with the big cats having been reported everywhere from Lynchburg and Bath County on to Rockingham County. Cougars themselves, however, are not as commonplace as their sightings.
In fact, no mountain lions, catamounts, pumas, American panthers, painters or mountain cats — all the same species — are believed to be full-time residents of the Blue Ridge Mountains, according to wildlife officials.
But Bennett’s eyes — and the odd behavior of a mare in a field — told him something different.
“I was doing some weed-whacking along the stable fence and one of the horses was there with me. I was going along with the weed whacker and she all of a sudden went up on her hind legs and kicked her front legs out,” Bennett recalled. “When she came down, she ran toward the stable and stopped. I shut down the weed whacker because I thought that’s what upset her.”
It wasn’t.
Bennett said the horse stared down toward the pond and pawed the ground with her front feet, making a distressed noise.
“I walked along the fence line to see what she was looking at,” he said.
That’s when he saw the cat.
“I proceeded to walk toward it and the cat proceeded to walk away, down toward the pond and then into the hollow. It walked with its head low and its tail toward the ground,” Bennett said. “It wasn’t like the cat was afraid of me. It was like it just knew that what was walking toward it wasn’t something it was interested in.”
There are doubts about the existence of black-furred or melanistic cougars despite thousands of reports over a hundred years because no bodies have ever been recovered. The Eastern cougar has been declared extinct, although its relative, the Western cougar, is alive and well in the Rocky Mountains and points west.
The only photo known to exist of a black cougar was shot in the 1950s in the Southwest. That cougar had dark gray fur on its sides and back, but pale gray fur on its belly.
“There has never been a documented case of an all-black cougar and the ones you see on television are all either jaguars or leopards,” said Mike Fies, wildlife research biologist at the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. “The Eastern cougar is considered extinct, with the last one being confirmed around 1880. There are no known resident populations. I haven’t seen one in the 30 years I’ve been here, and that makes it hard to accept that there is a resident population.”
Just because it hasn’t been proved doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
“We never say never about these things,” Fies said. “But we still have no evidence of their being in Virginia.”
Ed Creasy, on whose property Bennett saw the cat, believes.
“[Bennett] came to the house and he was kind of shaken. He said he saw a large cat with a black tail and a rounded face down by the pond,” Creasy recalled. “We found a footprint where it looked like the animal had walked around the pond.”
The former FBI agent did a quick preliminary investigation, making a plaster cast of a paw print.
“I hadn’t done a plaster cast in years and had to go to the store to get what I needed,” Creasy said. “When we got back to the pond, water had just started to seep into the print, which meant we had been there pretty close behind it. I dried the print lightly with some paper towel and made the cast.”
The cast is inconclusive, though what it shows closely resembles a cat print, with an apparent trefoil paw pad at the back end.
The idea of a cougar prowling the Blue Ridge foothills might be improbable, but it isn’t impossible. In 2011, a cougar was killed on the streets of Connecticut. The animal had walked for three years across six states only to meet its death.
According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, DNA tests showed the cougar made its way east from South Dakota’s Black Hills, its image captured on trail cameras in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and New York before the animal was struck and killed by a 2006 Hyundai Tucson outside Milford.
The cat’s death was not in vain, according to Science Daily. It taught researchers about cougar dispersals in which young male cats hit the road looking for mates. The dispersals from the West and Midwest can go far to the east and likely have occurred sporadically for many years.
That doesn’t mean that a lone male or female in a strange state will meet up with a lover and raise a family of resident cats.
“Neither males nor females will stop to establish a home range without the presence of possible mates. So, ultimately, for a new breeding population to start, a male and female who have dispersed separately from the West must randomly stumble upon each other in the 2 million square miles of habitat east of their range,” said officials from Mountainlion.org, an organization dedicated to preserving cougar populations.
“These random bets on exact location and timing, repeated over and over, represent the lion’s only chance for survival,” the publication states.
Sightings in the Midwest and East prior to 2000 commonly were attributed to rural myth, mistaken identity or the release or escape of lions once held as pets. Thanks to the killed cat in Connecticut, however, biologists say some of those sightings could have been dispersed males.
The nearest native pumas to Virginia are Florida panthers, which range from Florida into Alabama. There are believed to be only about 200 of them, although there also have been reports of cougar tracks and sightings in West Virginia and North Carolina.
Still, it’s unlikely cougars have filtered into the Blue Ridge, since no bodies, no photos and no feces have been found, Fies said. Regardless, he receives a lot of reports of puma sightings.
“That week, I had three reported sightings,” he said. “I’ve been in public meetings and asked how many people have seen a cougar and have almost everyone raise their hand. It just seems to me that if that many sightings were accurate, we’d see some evidence.”
Crozet-area residents have reported puma sightings for years, with a flurry around 2008.
“It’s been quiet recently, but for a while people were reporting them every few months,” said Mike Marshall, editor of the Crozet Gazette. “I think a lot of people don’t report them because they are afraid of being made fun of. I’m personally convinced they’re here.”
Fies said he has no doubt those who reported seeing cougars saw something; he just doubts they saw cougars.
“People misidentify them with a lot of things,” he said. “Bobcats are in the woods and from a distance, people easily mistake dogs for cougars. A lot of photos have been shown to be something else when they are reviewed.”
Fies said wildlife biologists doubt cougars would just disappear into the mountains without a trace. The Connecticut cat left tracks, trail photographs and scat across its path so that it was easy to follow once found.
“There’s no doubt that mountain lions are moving eastward. The Western cougar is definitely moving eastward,” he said. “Maybe there will be a time when some will colonize Virginia in the future.”
Bennett, however, said he believes that, be it Florida puma or Western cougar, there is at least one cat out there. – Roanoke
‘Finding Bigfoot’ Plodding Through Southwest Pennsylvania
The Bigfoot hunters starring on Animal Planet’s hit television series “Finding Bigfoot” went on a search for the mythical creature in southwestern Pennsylvania, an area that locals claim is a hot spot for supernatural activity and Bigfoot sightings.
On the popular program, which is now in its fifth season, four researchers travel to a different location in the United States and interview people who claim to have seen Bigfoot. Then the researchers set up re-enactments of the sighting to try to prove the existence of the mysterious creature.
The team consists of Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) President Matt Moneymaker, researchers James “Bobo” Fay and Cliff Barackman, and scientist Ranae Holland.
On Aug. 26, the producers of “Finding Bigfoot” explored Uniontown to find “a Sasquatch in these woods.”
According to the Herald-Standard, Bigfoot believers from as far as Ohio and West Virginia were among the more than 200 people who attended a town hall meeting where people shared stories about their interactions with the ape-like creature. The meeting was held at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown.
“We knew we needed a venue that was capable of holding all these people,” said show producer Sean Mantooth. “It’s beautiful and centrally located in downtown Uniontown. It was a great location.”
Erica Miller, the executive director of the theater, mentioned that the theater received publicity from the show.
“We’ve had a lot of famous names and faces in here, but it’s not every day we film a TV show here,” she said, adding “It’s great exposure for the theater.”
“This is the best town hall meeting we’ve ever had – the sheer amount of stories we had – we literally did not have enough time before we had to start wrapping things up,” said Mantooth.
“We’ve gotten a lot of support from the local community. They’ve been very welcoming to the cast and crew and made it a really good episode for us,” he continued. – Latin Post
