Eisenhower briefing on UFOs by Intelligence Agency MAJI - info from Dr. Greer
Eisenhower briefing on UFOs by Intelligence Agency MAJI - info from Dr. Greer
Eisenhower briefing on UFOs by Intelligence Agency MAJI - info from Dr. Greer.
Below is the commentary from Dr. Greer's intelligence source regarding this briefing. The commentary in and of itself is very revealing.
The Eisenhower Briefing (18 November 1952) was sent to Dr. Greer by an intelligence source with the following commentary.
"The MJ-12 papers is a contingency plan to test the public's reaction to the information.
I have a friend who said this to me who was in the Navy. Majesty files are the real ones. He also told me about the code word "Poderosa" and why the executive order on the MJ-12 papers is wrong. They did it for a reason.
And project Grudge Blue Book Report #13 is 100% real. Lt Col. Friend told this to me when I took him to dinner here in Lakewood near my home in 2011."
"That MAJI = Majority Agency for Joint Intelligence. All information, disinformation and intelligence is gathered and evaluated by this agency. This agency is responsible for all disinformation and operates in conjunction with the CIA, NSA, DIA and the Office of Naval Intelligence. This is a very powerful organization and all alien projects are under its control.
MAJI is responsible only to MJ-12. MAJIC is the security classification and clearance of all alien connected material, projects and information.X MAJIC means MAJI controlled (MAJI plus controlled + MAJIC). The MJ-12 papers is a contingency plan to test the public's reaction to the information. I have a friend who said this to me. Majesty are the real one is they want to show the President. That's if they trust him.
To read the whole document (7 pages of briefings papers) go to Greer’s website siriusdisclosure.com/c-setipapers and scroll down to Letters and briefings documents. It is the last one on the list, open it as zip file.
Below three scanned pages out of the 7 pages of the briefings papers.
Note: Decades after the United States Air Force closed their official investigations into the UFO phenomenon, the files are now online in their entirety for free on projectbluebook.theblackvault.com
Project Blue Book is regarded as the third UFO investigation project by the USAF. The first was Project Sign, which began in 1947, then Grudge, which ran from 1949 to 1951, and the final project, Blue Book, ran from 1951 to 1969.
The files surrounding the investigation of the sightings are all included in the Project Blue Book files. That is, unless, as some suggest, there are secret investigations that the public still does not have access to. More information at Openmindstv.
According to Dr. Greer, Project Grudge Blue Book Report #13 is 100% real.
Report #13 contains three UFO cases.
1949 – Location: Boise – Idaho 1951 – Location: Orange – VA 1964 – Location: Summit – New Jersey
NASA recently released a 1.5 billion pixel image of the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor, which contains over 100 million stars and spans more than 40,000 light years – and that’s just a section of the galaxy.
This image, created from a mosaic of 411 Hubble pictures, was then used by YouTuber daveachuk to create this incredible fly-through video. Combined with gorgeous music from the band Koda, it’s an awe-inspiring – and humbling – experience.
A UFO has been spotted near the International Space Station in footage broadcast after astronauts evacuated part of the orbiting craft.
Alien spotters noticed a strange object disappear behind the ISS, reigniting bizarre claims that the space station is actually a place for aliens to come out hang out with humans.
Footage of the UFO was shown on the news channel CBS, sparking furious debate among online conspiracy nuts. It is not clear whether the film was stock footage, or taken from NASA's live feed.
Some claimed it showed a UFO entering the Earth's atmosphere, whilst others speculated that ET's friends in the emergency services might be on hand to help out the evacuating astronauts.
Space gazers are forever spotting strange objects near the ISS, though they are often explained away as space debris.
NASA has also been accused of covering up existence of aliens, with conspiracy theorists claiming it cuts live video streams whenever a strange spacecraft floats into view.
Unfortunately for believers in extra-terrestrial life, the latest UFO could actually be anything from a weather balloon to a cloud or a blob of ice. It may even be earthbound, as it appears to be moving at the same speed as the planet.
Still, it's always nice to see a proper unidentified flying object - which is exactly what this is until NASA tells us otherwise.

Alien Mystery: The Most Famous Unexplained Alien Abduction Cases (Watch Video)
Alien Mystery: The Most Famous Unexplained Alien Abduction Cases (Watch Video)
Reports on alien abductions and UFO sightings have always done the rounds, intriguing both the scientific world and lay men alike. The truth behind these abductions and sightings still remain a mystery but a few cases have got the scientific world thinking, if it really is true, what is the purpose behind these strange visits and what do they intend to do with the abductees.
These are the most famous cases of alien abductions.
1. The Antonio Villas Boas Abduction
This is the earliest case of alien abduction that happened in the 1950's. In Brazil a poor 23 year old farmer Antonio Villas Boas claimed to have seen a spacecraft, he continued seeing it until one night he stated that he was abducted. There was physical evidence on his body that revealed he was experimented on. He wrote of his experience to Brazilian journalist Joao Martins who writes about UFO's and had asked people through an ad in the newspaper to send in their experience.
Boas was examined by a doctor in Rio de Janeiro, Olavo Fontes. Upon examination Fontes found that he was suffering from radiation sickness. Boas was feeling nauseous, was suffering from head ache, lethargy and skin lesions. The farmer claimed that he was abducted to impregnate another alien, who according to him was rather attractive. He explained the whole incident in detail.
Different conclusions have been drawn from Boas's experience. Some claimed that he was a poor farmer who created a false story for money, while some believe that it really was true. Scientists also say that he may have been hallucinating. But the physical evidence was something they could not explain.
2. The Barney and Betty Hill Abduction
Barney and Betty Hill abduction case is the most famous one that occurred in Portsmouth, NH. The Hills were an interracial couple and had gone on a vacation to Canada, while driving home they saw a huge space craft with a bright multi coloured light, they even claimed to have seen what they called, "bipedal humanoid creatures" who were staring out the window of the spacecraft. They got afraid and hurried back to the car and raced down the highway. Two minutes later they found that they had driven 35 miles. It was impossible.
Investigation was conducted into their UFO sighting by Major Paul W. Henderson. He said, "The UFO was also confirmed by our radar."
After the incident life was never the same, they became famous when two writers heard about her story. Everyone wanted to know what was going on. Betty began having nightmares and so they contacted Boston psychiatrist and neurologist, Dr. Benjamin Simon. Through regressive hypnosis he found out that they were abducted, medical experiments were conducted on them and they were then released. They had two hours of missing time that they could not recollect. The hypnosis helped there.
Their car had damages and their clothes and shoes left "evidence" of their encounter. The incident turned Betty into the nation's first "UFO Hunter."
3. The Betty Andreasson Luca Abduction
After the Hills case came out in the open several others began claiming that they had similar experiences. Scientists could explain most of them but one case years later was another mystery. A woman Betty Andreasson in Ashburnham, MA claimed to have been abducted by aliens.
Her case was examined by Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) founder and investigator Ray Fowler. He examined her and then hypnotized her and found shocking details. She described how they tried to implant something in her skill, the manner in which they spoke to her was through telepathy as they had not spoken through their mouths but were still conversing.
She said that they told her this was done to "prepare for some kind of planetary revelation." Fowler examined her for over a decade and said, "Either she is the most accomplished liar and actress the world had ever seen, or else she had really gone through this ordeal."
4.The Travis Walton Abduction
This is the most known abduction case. Travis Walton was a logger in Arizona who was driving home with his colleagues late at night. They suddenly saw a diamond shaped light and stopped the car to get a closer look. On approaching closer Walon found that the ligh grew stronger and the fluorescent object approached closer too. Suddenly when he went into the light beam being emitted from the craft, he was suddenly being lifted from the ground and thrown back. His colleagues saw this and ran with fear. He was unconscious.
After a while his friends decided to go get him but could not find him. They reported the matter to the police who suspected foul play but five days later Walton was found at a gas station 30 miles away. He claimed that he had no memory of the past five days, falling down was all he could recollect. His story created waves in the media and a movie 'Fire in the Sky' was made on his experience.
Science mattered more than ever in 2013. Climate science questions raged after Super Typhoon Haiyan pummeled the Philippines. And scientific expertise figured in disarmament debates in Syria and in Iran's proposed halt to its nuclear activities.
Meanwhile, on the pure research front, investigators made plenty of intriguing discoveries in 2013. With plenty to choose from, and argue over, here's a top five list of some favorites from the year. And while you're at it, check out National Geographic's Year in Review.
1. Space gets more crowded.
"Buy land, they're not making it anymore," Mark Twain famously advised investors. Twain never heard of exoplanets, of course. Caltech researchers suggested this year thatat least 100 billion such worlds orbit stars in our Milky Way galaxy. That's a lot of new real estate. (See "Smallest Exoplanets Found—Each Tinier Than Earth.")
Of course, not all of them are places you would want to live. A November analysis from NASA's Keck Observatory team suggested that one in five stars may have Earth-size planets orbiting in their "habitable zones"—zones that could be friendly to surface oceans. A more recent climate analysis of habitable zones said that number may be too high, but that is still plenty of planets.
2. Human embryonic stem cells cloned.

A scientist removes the nucleus from a human egg using a pipette. This is the first step to making personalized embryonic stem cells.
After more than a decade of false starts, Oregon Health and Science University researchers announced they had cloned human embryos and collected stem cells from them. They also grew the cells into specialized skin and heart cells, a first step toward using them in transplant medicine.
The key to the team's success turned out to be the addition of caffeine to the cloning process. Now researchers will seek to discover whether these cells or similar "induced" stem cells, made without embryos, will have the most medical use.
3. Voyager reaches edge of the solar wind.

One of the year's biggest announcements came from news that actually happened in 2012. The aftershocks of a pair of solar storms in September confirmed that NASA's venerable Voyager 1 spacecraft had actually entered interstellar space. (See "Voyager 1 Leaves Solar System, NASA Confirms.")
"It is an incredible event, to send the first human object into interstellar space," study lead author Donald Gurnett, of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, told National Geographic.
NASA had long been hoping to announce that the far-flung spacecraft, launched in 1977, had passed the edges of the solar wind. Voyager 1's twin, Voyager 2, is also expected to soon reach interstellar space.
The discovery is seen as vindication of NASA's efforts to look for past habitable conditions on Mars. The $2.5 billion rover next heads for Mount Sharp, in the center of Gale Crater, its original destination after landing. (See also: "Did Life on Earth Come From Mars?")
5. Lord of the Rings looking more like a documentary.
PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF GEORGIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM
This skull's features resemble those of both earlier and later humans.
The human family tree suddenly sprouted some funky-looking shoots after a year of ancient DNA and fossil discoveries.
At the Dmanisi site in the Republic of Georgia, for example, researchers reported that what seemed like a lot of different-looking early human species likely were just one, Homo erectus. They based the claim on the discovery of a 1.8-million-year-old skull blessed with a mixture of more ancient and more recent characteristics. (See "Beautiful Skull Spurs Debate on Human History.")
On the genetic front, what looked like a Neanderthal bone in a Spanish cave turned out to actually possess the genes—the oldest DNA yet sequenced—of a different vanished early human species, the Denisovans.
This finding suggests that archaic humans mated with Homo erectus, as well as with some early modern humans in prehistory. A lot of modern people have a little archaic human in their genes, it turns out.

Witness report: I was driving to our local waste center when I looked up into the sky and saw this weird hole in the clouds it was what looked like a perfect circle, i got out of my car and took a picture of it with my Iphone.
Original image.
I have been a pilot for over 35 years and had never seen anything like it before.
I did not see the two black objects below the cloud formation until I got home and enlarged the picture on my computer.
Image in Negative.
I downloaded the picture to the weather channel thinking some expert would comment on it and when I went back to check a few days later they had removed the picture from their site.

Ardy Sixkiller Clarke Sky People: Untold Stories of Alien Encounters in Mesoamerica
Ardy Sixkiller Clarke Sky People: Untold Stories of Alien Encounters in Mesoamerica
Dr. Ardy Sixkiller Clarke, author of Encounters With Star People, vowed as a teenager to follow in the footsteps of two 19th-century explorers, John L. Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, who brought the ancient Maya cities to the world’s attention. Dr. Clarke set out on a seven-year adventure (from 2003 through 2010) through Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico, collecting stories of encounters, sky gods, giants, little people, and aliens among the indigenous people. She drove more than 12,000 miles, visiting 89 archaeological sites (Stephens and Catherwood visited only 44) and conducting nearly 100 individual interviews.
The result is an enthralling series of unique, original, true stories of encounters with space travelers, giants, little people, and UFOs. Sky People may very well change the way you perceive and experience the world.
Dr. Ardy Sixkiller Clarke brings to the field of ufology degrees in history, English, psychology, and educational leadership and a background as a teacher, university professor, administrator, licensed therapist and psychologist, and social science researcher. As a professor emeritus at Montana State University and director of the Center for Bilingual/Multicultural Education, Dr. Clarke has focused on working with indigenous people. Her first book was the best-seller Encounters With Star People. She lives in a mountain cabin in Big Sky, Montana. Her Website, www.sixkiller.com, provides updates on her activities.

A teenage girl spent three years of her life convinced she was dead due to a rare medical condition known as 'Walking Corpse Syndrome'.
Haley Smith, 17, suffered from the ultra-rare illness Cotard’s Syndrome.
Sufferers genuinely believe they are dead, or that parts of their body no longer exist, and some die from starvation because they feel they no longer have to eat.
Alligator Found at Van Nuys Home in Crate With Two Dead Cats
An 8-foot-long alligator was seized Monday from the backyard of a Van Nuys home by Animal Control Officers from the Los Angeles Animal Services Department, authorities said Wednesday.
The discovery was made in the 13200 Block of Sylvan Street after authorities received a tip regarding the alligator, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services.
The same property had been searched in late 2014 after officials received a similar tip, but no alligator was found at that time, the release stated.
On Monday authorities returned to the home.
The resident refused to allow officers to inspect the property, so a search warrant was obtained, according to Animal Services.
In the back of the yard, officers found the 40-year-old alligator in a covered box, the release stated.
Also located in the box with the alligator were what appeared to be the remains of two dead cats, authorities said. The carcasses were impounded along with the alligator.

Landlords seeking compensation for house fires in Dubai have sometimes told police the blaze was started by supernatural beings, it's been reported.
Owners claim their properties were set alight by goblins or jinns in order to claim insurance money or even to get a new house, the Khaleej Times website reports. A police fire expert has rubbished the idea as little more than a scam, telling the paper that their investigations suggest the fires are often either started deliberately or caused by negligence. "Fire experts follow scientific methods according to specific rules," says Ahmed Mohammed, a senior fire expert at the Criminal Evidence Department of the Dubai Police. "There have been cases in which a person or persons tell lies, and make weird claims that a jinn is behind the fire," he says, adding that many people don't know how to deal with fires when they start. A straightforward solution would be to set up CCTV cameras in buildings, Mr Mohammed says.
In Arabic mythology, jinns - or genies - are spirits which can influence the actions of human beings. In 2014, a man in Dubai was granted a divorce after he said his wife was possessed by a jinn and refused to have sex with him. A court initially awarded the woman alimony but this was cancelled by an appeals court, which said she should have been "honest" about the jinn issue. - Khaleej Times

Red UFO sighting recorded above Cargo Ship to ISS on 12th January 2015
Interesting video footage of a strange red UFO sighting recorded above Cargo Ship to ISS on 12th January 2015.
Witness said: Very Clear Amazing RED Flashing UFO close to Cargo ship making deliveries to International space station on 12 Jan 2015..then on 15 Jan ISS as major alert saying there is a leak on ISS..& evacuation on ISS happens. Two days after its launch from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, the unpiloted U.S. SpaceX Dragon cargo craft arrived at the International Space Station Jan. 12 with more than two tons of supplies and science experiments for the Expedition 42 crew. The station crew grappled the Dragon supply ship with the station’s robotic arm and ground controllers at Mission Control, Houston manoeuvred Dragon to the Earth-facing port of the station’s Harmony module, where it was installed and bolted into place for a month-long stay.
A witness observed a bright blue UFO streaking through the sky above Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia on the evening of Thursday, January 15.
Ryan Peat noticed the aerial object from his backyard at approximately 6:25 p.m. He explains to local media outlet Bundaberg NewsMail, “It was travelling much like a shooting star but not as fast.”
He says this blue streaking UFO “then started to turn green and little specks of light started to trail behind it before it disintegrated.”

Mary Rodwell of the Australian Close Encounter Resource Network points out that UFOs are common in the Bundaberg region. But based on Peat’s description, the UFO in this case was likely a meteor or other space debris entering the atmosphere.
Peat agrees that this is the likely explanation for what he observed. But, still, as the Bundaberg NewsMail points out, “Whether it was space junk, a meteorite, shooting star or something of the extra terrestrial kind, Mr Peat said the UFO sighting wasn’t one he would forget in a hurry.”
ALIEN CRAFT AND MISSING TIME IN SHINNOCOCK NEW YORK
AUGUST 1972 …… SHINNOCOCK NEW YORK
I was with my girlfriend on the beach at Fire Island, NY watching a meteor shower in August of 1972. A large object appeared over the ocean. We first thought it was just a large meteor. but it hovered above the ocean and changed direction. It settled into the ocean approximately 1/2 mile from us. We could see it shining under the water. It traveled quickly through the ocean towards our location. I had never seen anything like it before or since. There was a jetty and a small light beacon that I climbed on to get a better look. The object was coming quickly. The next thing we both knew was that it was almost 3am. over 4 hours passed without any sensation of time passing. Both myself and my girlfriend were shaking and had an incredible sensation of fear. Neither of us could remember what happened during the lost period of time. I will also add that neither myself or my girlfriend ever used drugs or alcohol. We were both sober and wide awake at the time of the event. my girlfriend was never the same after that. She withdrew from the world and never wanted me to see her again or to ever remind her of that night. As for myself, I have had a severe sleep disorder my entire life since that night. I have the same nightmare that I am being chased several nights a week for over 40 years. I never get to see what or who is chasing me and I never know why I am being chased. This is a fact. I am not crazy or a liar. I have told this story to many of my friends most of my life. I did not make it up and I have been laughed at most of my life because I told people about this event. I have actually talked to someone else that swears that he had the same missing time happen to him. That made me wonder if this happens often, that most people that lost time never remember what happened. I am willing to answer any questions that you might ask. I have always wondered what happened to us. I have never been able to forget it. the memory stays as fresh as if it happened yesterday
Series Of UFO Sightings Over Nuclear Plants in France and Belgium
Series Of UFO Sightings Over Nuclear Plants in France and Belgium
A vast amount of reported UFO sightings over nuclear power plants since October 2014 sparked a high alert status issued by the French government. The latest of the sightings happened just last week, and the most recent one in Belgium was reported in December. Majority of media outlets made drones as the suspect, but not all witnesses are convinced with this explanation. Authorities can’t identify the UFO, and if they are drones they don’t know who controlled them.
Austrian news site ORF.at reports that UFOs were observed flying above nuclear power plants in France on 18 separate occasions between October and November. The site adds that authorities suspect an unknown group has been coordinating to create the UFO sightings.
ORF.at also says the series of sightings have set off a debate over the safety of nuclear power plant facility. The French government has received denunciation from Greenpeace for alleged downplaying the danger of these unknown flights over nuclear power stations.
The latest UFO sighting took place on January 3, 2015 over the nuclear power plant in Nogent-Sur-Seine, southeast of Paris. Two security guards claimed to have seen two flying objects.
In Belgium, an unidentified flying object was seen over Doel nuclear power plant, around ten miles from Antwerp. According to Spiegel Online news site, the plant had been shutdown reportedly due to sabotage four months ago. No further details have been known.
The Independent, UK-based website, says that authorities arrested three young men in November in central France for attempting to fly drones over a nuclear plant. But their drones were later discovered to be mere toys, not similar to the sophisticated craft reported by the witnesses of several UFO sightings over power plant in France and Belgium.
The Independent explains that a campaign of harassment by anti-nuclear campaigners is considered as a possible explanation of these nuclear power station UFO sightings. Meanwhile, the news site notes that the French government remains on high alert.
Writer Robert Fleischer is skeptical about drone explanations after reading accounts from witnesses at forum-ovni-ufologie.com and interviewing witnesses of a UFO over nuclear plant in Golfech on October 30, 2014. He suspects there’s more to it than French authorities are willing to divulge.
A Plane Passenger Records UFO Activity Above Australian Capital
A Plane Passenger Records UFO Activity Above Australian Capital
A UFO caught on video maneuvering from left to right before flying below the aircraft and disappearing out of the picture.
The video shows a mysterious unidentified flying disc shape object in the sky of the Australian capital Canberra. Caught on video from a plane, the alleged alien UFO can be seen speeding past the clouds. The newly released video was actually shot a few years ago.
Finding UFO group, which records UFOs across Australia, posted the UFO sighting video. The video has gained a lot of interest from curious and open-minded individuals over the internet, as it shows unusual looking object speeding through the horizon from left to right then flying under the plane before it went out of picture.
The videographer was on a passenger aircraft when he shot the video of the mysterious flying object.
News about the recently released UFO sighting video comes after a strange ball of light was seen speeding across the night sky above California, triggering alien UFO theories.
The video shows a crashing aircraft releasing an escape pod and alien enthusiasts believe that it was a spaceship. The video received over 500,000 views in just 24 hours after it was posted to YouTube. However, many also think that the so-called extraterrestrial UFO was simply a space rubble burning up in the atmosphere of Earth.
A series of meteorite sightings have been reported in the U.S. over the past months, and many of these reports were coming from California.

Undercover researchers expose new species of lizard for sale on Philippine black market
Rafe Brown, curator-in-charge of the herpetology division at the University of Kansas' Biodiversity Institute, has devoted years to cataloging and conserving the biodiversity of the Philippines, a nation he views as an ecological treasure house.
It's no wonder that Brown finds Manila's wide-ranging black market in exotic animals to be "bizarre and grotesque." He said Manila's criminal trade in animals ranges from pet stores "with many endangered and illegal species hidden behind the scenes" to major international wildlife violators and wholesale smuggling rackets.
"The operations involve everything from sea turtles, to ivory, to tiger parts and rhino horns," Brown said. "These involve private individuals, pet store owners, politicians, zookeepers and corrupt government officials. Many animals are sold as pets and 'captive breeding' stock and zoo specimens. Many are sold as food, many are slaughtered and sold as parts for 'medicinal' purposes and aphrodisiacs, and many are huge, high-stakes status symbols for the wealthy elite -- such as tigers, monkeys and Komodo dragons."
Recently, amid this commerce, Brown and colleagues discovered two species of water monitor lizard that were previously unknown to science. They have just published descriptions of the new species in the journal Zootaxa, along with an analysis of Manila's illegal pet and bush-meat trade in the journal Biological Conservation. Moreover, a film documentary about their remarkable discovery is in the works.
"Over a five-year period we visited pet markets, roadside bush-meat stands and various other markets where monitor lizards were sold as pets or meat," said the KU researcher. "We used to walk around pet markets and side streets talking to traders using circuitous conversation and eventually getting around to asking them if they had 'anything else' behind the scenes or in the back room."
Oftentimes, sellers would offer Brown and his fellow researchers "a turtle or monitor lizard or some other animal which they should not have had in their possession," he said. The team purchased these reptiles to genetically analyze them at KU in an effort to help Philippine police and conservationists.
"Our plan was to build genetic databases to use as enforcement references for confiscated animals, to empower local enforcement officials with the forensic, scientific and legal means of establishing a confiscated animal's provenance," Brown said. "We were aware that traders routinely mislead buyers with fantastic stories of animals' origins to fetch a higher price, so we reasoned that genetic methods could pinpoint an animal's origins when a trader's account was not to be trusted."
In the process, to their surprise, the researchers found genetic varieties of water monitor lizards that varied sharply from those common to the areas surrounding Manila. This was their first clue that additional species diversity might exist, hidden within the northern Philippine water monitor lizard population.
"Both are gorgeous, black-and-white or black- and yellow-colored animals," Brown said. "They are dark in general appearance with bright speckling of white or yellow spots arranged in rows and stripes around the body, as if wearing shining necklaces. One gets up to a little over three feet in length, and the other is somewhat larger at about four feet. They're monitor lizards, so they're alert, with large eyes, continually flicking long tongues, which they 'smell' with, and they're generally very alert and look quite intelligent."
Back at KU, Brown and his colleagues Luke Welton, now with Brigham Young University; Cameron Siler, now with the University of Oklahoma, and Mae Diesmos, with the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, sequenced the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA of the monitor lizard samples. They found the two lizards were "morphologically cryptic," meaning they looked much like known species of monitor lizard, but their genetic variation indicated they were evolutionarily distinctive, qualifying them as unique species. The researchers named the lizards Varanus dalubhasa and Varanus bangonorum.
According to Brown, conservationists had overlooked the lizards because they were considered to be the same as another, widespread species. Now, the two new species are becoming a priority for conservation efforts.
"They were confused with species that were physically very similar in scale numbers, shapes, color patterns and body size," he said. "But even though they looked similar, it now makes perfect sense to us in hindsight that they should be distinct and considered separate species because they come from different areas -- a separate island in one case and an isolated peninsula in another. Both have been isolated for considerable geological time."
From other animals procured from Manila's black market, the KU-based research team found that half of the time traders had misled them, reporting "exotic" locales for their animal wares in hope of getting higher prices.
"We used standard DNA sequencing technology, determined the genetic types of the samples from traders, compared them to our wild-caught, known-locality samples and then 'ground-truthed' what the traders told us versus what the genetics inferred," Brown said.
According to Brown, much of the illicit trade has moved online recently, where traders utilize social networks to hawk animals.
"Whereas two years ago, deals were frequently made in the back alleys of streets of Manila, most are now made online, using the most rapidly growing scourge of wildlife protection -- Facebook," he said. "Today, Facebook is the primary means with which unscrupulous individuals deal in wares of illegally harvested wild animals." - EurekaAlert
