8 Explanations for UFOs
8 Explanations for UFOs
According to MUFON, there are about 700 reported UFO cases a month in the United States alone. Approximately 6% of the global population has reported one or more UFO sighting. The phenomenon continues to grow and, as our detection methods get more sophisticated, the mystery only deepens. Here are the Ghost Diaries’ top 8 explanations for the UFO phenomenon:
8 – Natural causes
UFOs are tricks of the eye, lenticular clouds, refracted light, birds, weather balloons, meteors, comets, stars. You name it. If it’s a physical object in the known universe it’s been cited as an explanation for a UFO.
7 – Mass Hallucination
Humans are desperate for meaning in an incoherent universe, so they project unknown objects from their subconscious onto the world around them. This could account for ghosts and paranormal activity as well.
6 – Aliens
UFOs are indeed spacecraft carrying extraterrestrials from other star systems who are looking for resources or conducting research. With a billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy alone, probability falls on the side of aliens existing in numbers. The only question is whether or not they are advanced enough to harness the kinds of energy sources necessary to cover the vast interstellar and intergalactic distances.
5 – Humans or AI From the Future
UFOs are time travel machines operated by humans from our own future, who have used the technological singularity to master time. They are returning to prevent some cataclysmic disaster from occurring or to study their own past. Some fringe thinkers think time travelers may be trying to prevent humans from using the Hadron Collider to accidentally create a black hole; still others think UFOs are advanced artificial intelligence time traveling back to adjust its own source code.
4 – Holograms
Tupac at Coachella was just the tip of the iceberg. A surprisingly large faction of the UFO research community believes UFOs are holograms created by Project Bluebeam, a covert psi op meant to instill fear and pave the way for a one world government. There is fairly good evidence that several different governments have experimented with advanced hologram technology in the skies.
3 – Secret Government Technology
Straight from the hangars of Area 51 and Dulce, UFOs are advanced government technology in action, soaring above us with powers of anti-gravity, invisibility, teleportation, and other forms of propulsion. Whoever devised these dirigibles may be early adopters of a technological singularity that hasn’t trickled down to the mainstream populace yet. There is precedence for such secrecy. Manhattan Project anyone? Maybe consider known technology as well, such as drones.
2 – Secret Government/Alien technology
UFOs are the result of our government either joining forces with an alien civilization or reverse engineering an alien’s crashed spacecraft, possibly from the Roswell incident. UFOs are therefore conceptually alien, but built by human hands using elements found on our own Earth.
1 – Glitch in the Matrix
UFOs–and ghosts for that matter–are momentary glitches in the simulated program that is our universe. Evidence for our existence being a computer simulation run by a vastly more advanced human or alien civilization is still being collected. We may never get an answer to Nick Bostrom’s classic theory. However, some have speculated that later this century the combination of artificial intelligence and nanotechnology will allow humans to contact the operators of the simulation, the godlike creators of our artificial reality.
What do you think UFOs are? Which explanation, or combination of them, makes the most sense? On one extreme we have cloud formations and refracting light; on the other we have glitches in a simulated universe and time travel. We may not discover the answer in our lifetime, but to quote the X-Files: “the truth is out there.”

Whistleblower Explains Mysterious Sounds Heard Across the World–and It’s More Disturbing Than Anything You Can Imagine
Whistleblower Explains Mysterious Sounds Heard Across the World–and It’s More Disturbing Than Anything You Can Imagine
Starting in the second half of 2011 and accelerating into 2012, reports have flooded in from hundreds of cities around the world regarding the strange and powerful sounds and mysterious noises emanating from unknown sources. Varying from “midnight roars” and loud booms to industrial drones that seem to permeate the walls of the cities, these sounds have been reported by thousands of people and documented for all to hear. Perhaps the creepiest sound has been the oft-reported omnipresent trumpet horns played in eerie musical patterns.
Sounds made up, doesn’t it? But it’s actually one of the most empirically documented mysteries of the modern era. If this is the first you are hearing of it, buckle your seat belt because you’re in for a wild ride….
The Incomprehensible Scale and Frequency of the Mysterious Sounds
What’s most incredible has been the widespread nature of the sounds–they are heard simultaneously by thousands of people in completely different parts of the world in different time zones; the phenomenon’s geographic scale has encompassed up to 5 counties at once. In 2013, explosive bangs were heard in Buffalo, New York and London, England–cities separated by three thousand miles–at the same time, with thousands of people reporting to local police. Authorities in both locations confirmed that there were no jets in the area, no seismic activity, no fracking, etc–no explanation.
On March 16th, 2015, from North Carolina to New Jersey, a distance of 345 miles, roaring explosive sounds exactly 20 seconds in length were heard exactly two hours apart in sequential patterns.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you YouTube ‘mysterious sounds’ you can literally consume hours upon hours of different eye witness examples. The following are the ones we find to be most disturbing–keep reading after the last video, because we will propose the mind boggling possible explanation to this mysterious phenomenon.
The Terrifying Groaning Industrial Noise in the Sky Over Kiev, Ukraine
I’m sorry, but if that doesn’t give you chills from head to toe, you’re an alien. Is this a government operation of some kind, a sound check for Project Blue Beam, with trumpet sounds preparing for a false flag Rapture that will feature Archangel Gabriel from the Revelation?
Let’s move on to the next video, shall we?
Scraping Metallic Hum in Czech Republic
Seriously, what the hell is that? It sounds like the Earth is an industrial machine with some detached gears. Is a veil between dimensions and universes being lifted? Maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves–perhaps it’s just HAARP related terrestrial black projects. In many cities, people have reported their dogs reacting to the noises before they started–could there be significance to this eerie detail?
Mysterious Non-Geologic Booms Right Before Earthquake in Colorado
This video has been corroborated by hundreds of witnesses. The creepy fact here is that these noises preceded an earthquake on the same day and yet geologists maintain there was absolutely no seismic activity prior to the earthquake when these booms were occurring. Should we consider government geoengineering projects as an explanation?
Creepiest Storm Sounds Ever in Finland
It might be a good idea to pack up the picnic and get out of the way of this thing. Perhaps now we should also consider weather modification technology in the mix here as well.
New York Prior to Hurricane Sandy
There were multiple reports of strange sounds in New York as Hurricane Sandy drew closer. Accusations of weather tampering and geoengineering conspiracies aside, perhaps this is gradual climate change playing mind games with the Earth’s storm fronts.
Possible Explanation from Government-Contracted Geologist Turned Whistleblower
So, is there a rational explanation to all these mysterious sounds heard across the world?
It turns out there may be, but the ramifications of it are more horrifying than any conspiracy or paranormal answer. According to a geologist who worked for the government, “Something is going on in the inner core of the Earth.” It has to do with the magnetic poles changing and involves minerals recycling in the mantle of the Earth. The sounds are being generated in the mantle as large static discharges of energy, pushed up through the Earth’s crust, broadcasting as infrasound through the ionosphere and then bouncing back at a lower frequency that we can hear and feel as vibrations.
The whistleblower says there has been a change in speed of mantle movement, which is affecting magnetic conductivity. Government scientists evidently don’t know if it’s long term or not but could involve a weakening and strengthening of magnetic field anomalies similar to the last major pole shift. Since the Earth is about a half million years overdue for a pole shift, this explanation is more disturbing than most people can fathom.
From what we know of studying sediment from 786,000 years ago, when the magnetic field that protects us breaks down, more solar radiation inundates the surface and can could cause instability in our ecosystems for thousands of years. It may cause major species die-offs, including humans.
And about that whistleblower? Yeah, well he evidently disappeared soon after making his disclosures to Linda Moulton Howe of EARTHFILES.
Even More Mind Blowing Explanation
While the trumpets and booms are probably not biblical in any kind of traditional religious sense–contrary to popular apocalyptic readings–could these sounds still be interpreted as a warning, signals from the universe itself and possibly other intelligences trying to wake up planet Earth and prepare us for the pole shift? Perhaps the 21st century will indeed be the experience of the apocalypse, but in many layers, a geophysical change that sets into motion magnetic field anomalies that go on for thousands of years. Perhaps other intelligences know how to use magnetic field shifts and want to use the energy from that polarity. Or maybe they are trying to help us. Or maybe this explanation is bogus and terrestrial government black ops are the cause. Whichever way your mind leans, we know that something very strange is going on that is not being reported on or acknowledged by mainstream news.
What do you think? Listen to a few more of these incredible mysterious sounds and tell us: are these the vibrations of a geomagnetic pole shift, the collateral audio of government black op projects, or something even more sinister….
Strange Ancient Colombian Artifacts Made With Highly Advanced Alien Technology
Strange Ancient Colombian Artifacts Made With Highly Advanced Alien Technology
MessageToEagle.com - These astonishing artifacts are made out of lydite, an exceptionally hard stone that is nearly the same hardness as granite.
What is exceptional about these ancient objects is that would be practically impossible to make the same artifacts today in our modern era using the same materials!
Who created them and for what purpose? How were they manufactured?
Colombia remains a country full of ancient secrets. It is here we encounter several very strange and sophisticated artifacts that were made with unknown ancient technology.
These puzzling artifacts are estimated to be more than 6,000 years old. Who created them and for what purpose? How were they manufactured?
A tool made out of lydite. What was it used for?
MessageToEagle.com has previously reported about the Genetic Disc, a remarkable artifact that could re-write ancient history and our origins.
The Genetic Disc was originally discovered in Colombia by Professor Jamie Gutierrez. Since it does not fit any existing pre-Columbian culture, it is assumed to be more than 6,000 years old and was created by an unknown ancient civilization that used alien technology.
Remarkabel ancient Genetic Disc could re-write ancient history.
The truth is we have no idea how or why the carvings were made at a time when humans were not supposed to have knowledge of advanced biology and microscope technology.
The creators of the "Genetic Disc," carved depictions of human biology that can only be seen with a microscope!
Professor Jamie Gutierrez came also across other very intriguing artifacts that modern science cannot explain. Here are some of them.
This is an ancient flute. Its holes are carved so perfectly that it would be difficult for us to replicate even with today’s machinery.
Here is another ancient flute. This one is designed in the image of an alligator.
This is a knife, also made of lydite.
Yet another instrument used for unknown purpose.
Is this being sitting in what we today call an armchair?
Who were the mysterious creators of these remarkable artifacts? What were the objects used for? Were they tools of some kinds or perhaps just souvenirs?
Who possessed such advanced technology to produce such magnificent objects?
Unfortunately, we are left with several unaswered questions and the ancient Colombian artifacts remain an unsolved mystery.
Chinese scientists are well on track to join the ongoing, worldwide hunt for the (still) elusive dark matter. Based on our most up-to-date data, dark matter accounts for just over 25% of the universe. Dark energy, on the other hand, makes up about about 68%, while normal matter (everything that we’ve ever seen—planets, stars, nebulae etc.) adds up to less than 5% of the universe. Unfortunately, we’ve yet to actually find dark matter or dark energy. Ultimately, the search for dark matter, the stuff that cannot be seen with telescopes, continues long after Dutch astronomer Jan Oort postulated the presence of dark matter particles in 1932.
Now, China is gearing up to make its contribution to the virtual army of scientific probes already hunting for this unseen portion of our universe.
Engineers from the Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites (SECM) announced on May 29 that the country’s Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) will be launched into space by the end of this year. DAMPE will detect electrons and photons with unprecedented energy resolution in order to identify possible dark matter signatures. It will have the widest observation spectrum and highest energy resolution of any dark matter probe in the world.
“DAMPE satellite will observe the direction, energy and electric charge of high-energy particles in space in search of dark matter,” said Chang Jin, chief scientist of the project, at a press briefing held by SECM.
The 1,900 kg spacecraft will be inserted into a sun-synchronous orbit at the altitude of 500 km to perform observations for up to 3 years.
The probe will be equipped in a Plastic Scintillator strip Detector (PSD) that serves as anti-coincidence detector and charge detector, a Silicon Tungsten tracker-converter (STK) that measures the direction of incident particle, an imaging calorimeter that measures the energy with high energy resolution, and a Neutron Detector (NUD) that gives types of high energy particle shower.

According to SECM, all key components of the spacecraft have been tested and are functioning well. DAMPE is one of the five Chinese space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS).
Having in mind the long-lasting and, thus far, disappointing search for dark matter, this is a tough task that the Chinese probe has set to undertake. To this day, we only know about dark matter’s existence because of gravitational effects. Scientists admit that something we have yet to detect directly is giving galaxies extra mass, some invisible matter, generating the extra gravity they need to stay intact. The question: “Will we ever find dark matter?” is still open. Perhaps this little probe can give us an answer.
UFO with Dual lights, changing Red to Green lights,… What is it?
UFO with Dual lights, changing Red to Green lights,… What is it?
Fountain Square, Indianapolis 6/5/15
I was standing outside of Pure Eatery, preparing to go inside for Dj Gig. I looked above the building across the street and observed two stationary, dual red lights. About 30 seconds after noticing it, it moved across the sky and came to a stationary position nearly above me. I began filming the object, which made no sound. As I filmed the object, several other people on the crowded street took notice. I filmed the object for two minutes and then stopped filming. I looked down for a second and when looked back at it, the color had changed from red to green. I began filming again and it suddenly made its way swiftly across the sky, until it went out of view behind the buildings. I stopped filming and about 30 seconds later, a helicopter flew across the sky rapidly.

10 Creepy Stories Of Encounters With Men In Black
10 Creepy Stories Of Encounters With Men In Black
Men in black have been popping up for awhile, usually whenever someone claims to have recently sighted a UFO. Shortly after each sighting, the person in question is visited by strange men who usually wear black suits, black ties, and white shirts.
The details and motives sometimes vary, but even stranger are the variations in the descriptions of the men in question. While some tales simply describe them as cold, aloof gentlemen wearing black suits, others say that they get an uncanny vibe from those who visit them. The stories tell of men who are unnaturally bald, men who talk in an almost robotic voice and wear lipstick over lipless mouths. Some suggest that they are from another world, disguising themselves as humans to learn our ways. Others believe that they are experimental cyborgs in the employ of the government. The truth behind the men in black is still shrouded in mystery, and we may never know the identity of these strange stalkers.
A man known only as Larry claims that one night he was drifting off to sleep when he was contacted by a strange presence who communicated with him telepathically. This weird presence explained that he was not from Earth, but beyond that he gave no reason for contacting Larry. Somewhat skeptical, Larry asked the presence to provide some proof of its existence beyond simply sending thoughts into his head—he wanted a face-to-face meeting. The presence agreed to provide him with further proof—he would show up during the day when Larry was with his best friend.
Larry wasn’t sure what to make of the entire thing the next day, and while he continued on with life as usual, he obsessed about the dream for months afterward. Eventually, he caught up with his buddy at an Independence Day celebration at a nearby park. As Larry was talking with his friend, a black van pulled up nearby and two black-clad men got out. Two more similarly dressed men exited the van after them, but they did not appear to be entirely human in shape. The strange men sat down at a nearby picnic table, looked over at Larry, and then reentered their van and left just as mysteriously as they had arrived. Larry never found out why they had contacted him.
Albert Bender was the director of an amateur organization called the International Flying Saucer Bureau and he believed that he had finally blown the lid off the whole flying saucer thing. He had his own publication called Space Review in which he planned to spread his discovery. After compiling all of his collected wisdom on the matter, he mailed it to a friend to look it over before he unveiled it to the world. Unfortunately, this attracted the attention of the men in black, who decided that it was time to pay him a visit and prevent him from leaking all their secrets to the world.
A couple days later, Bender was on his bed when he suddenly had a dizzy spell. He noticed several dark shapes in the room with him that slowly materialized into men in black suits with black hats obscuring their eyes and faces. He noticed in particular that the men’s eyes lit up with an incredible glow and they seemed capable of speaking directly to his mind. They made him promise to destroy his findings and cease all of his research into the subject—Bender was so scared that he was only too happy to comply.
A video was captured of two men in black who allegedly entered a hotel in Canada and started asking questions about one of the hotel employees. The stories say that the employee in question had recently seen a UFO and had told others about his experience. Not long after, these two men showed up at his place of employment. Luckily for him, he was not working during their visit.
According to witness accounts, the men were asking people not only about the employee in question, but also about conspiracies in general. They had no eyebrows or eyelashes, strange, hypnotic eyes, bald heads possibly disguised by wigs, and clothes that seemed to be meant for fitting in, but somehow were just enough out of place to raise alarm bells. These two men were definitely caught on camera—the question is whether they were clandestine government agents, beings from another world in disguise, or simply the product of a clever hoax. Regardless of the answer, there is something hair-raising about two men in suits walking into a hotel in the middle of the day and asking strange questions about one of the employees, then leaving as mysteriously as they came.
An anonymous postal worker from Washington, DC was out delivering mail one day when he decided to stop and eat an apple. When he was finished, he looked around for a trash can and, finding none, decided to just toss it onto the ground. Before he could leave the area, a security guard approached and lectured him for his negligence, explaining that the entire building and surrounding grounds were under constant surveillance. The postal worker thought about this, along with the fact that he already had to be buzzed in to deliver the mail, and began thinking that there was more to this place than met the eye.
Awhile later, he was out on his usual delivery run when he came by the foreboding building again. This time, he saw three men walking toward the building, except they didn’t appear to be like men. They waddled when they walked instead of putting one foot in front of the other, and they were abnormally thin—it was this thinness more than anything that frightened him.
Though shaken, he decided to soldier on and march his way up to the door to deliver the mail. When he entered, he found a group of men who began questioning him about what he had seen moments earlier. He was flabbergasted and unable to respond until one of the strange beings who he had seen earlier sidled up near him, at which point he felt even more terrified. After more grilling by the men in the room, and after repeating that he had seen nothing at all, he was allowed to leave. His mail route was changed shortly afterward.
The Man In Black Who Liked To Hang Out
In most stories, the men in black are malevolent, intimidating entities who only appear briefly after someone sees something they weren’t supposed to. But that’s not always the case. In one account, a woman claims that when she was a child her engineer father was regularly visited by a man in black who went simply by the name Lev. This man was completely bald, which she noted was very odd during her time. When she went to shake his hand, the skin was impossibly smooth, as if he had no hair whatsoever on his body.
The man constantly wore his trademark dark suit, glasses, and hat, even on scorching summer days. He was known for hanging around several engineers in the area, and her father always visited him in a little house near the local supermarket. The woman who tells the story says that she is sure her father knew Lev was an alien, although she never figured out what they talked about during their meetings.
An anonymous man related a tale of a strange experience he had while sightseeing in Washington, DC. Without realizing that there really wasn’t anything of interest for a civilian to see, he wandered into the State Department building. He meandered through the lobby for awhile until security became suspicious of him and headed over to usher him out of the building. However, before they could do so, he saw something that he would never forget.
The elevator opened and five men got out. Two of them were very businesslike and wore gray suits that were formal, but hardly remarkable beyond that. What drew his attention were the other three men in their escort. These men wore black hats pulled low over their eyes and long, black trench coats, even though it was the middle of the summer. The appearance seemed so strange that our observer could only describe it as “cartoonish.”
As they were walking by, one of the strange men lost his footing on the marble floor and fell to the ground, dropping his portfolio in the process. Upon helping him up, he noticed that the man’s legs seemed extraordinarily weak and it felt like there was a thick layer of wool underneath his suit. Even stranger, the man’s expression never appeared to change at all, despite falling onto the hard marble floor. Near the dropped portfolio, he found a small coin with words written in no language he could identify—one side depicted a man with features like a wolf and the other had navigational lines and two crescent moons.
Normally, the sneaky men who appear after UFO sightings are dressed all in black, but in one tale from Essex, England, they chose gray suits. William Shearer claimed to have seen a UFO, and a few days later two men showed up at his house. One of the men stayed by the car and maintained an intimidating presence while the other grilled Shearer about his experience. On this first visit, however, the man seemed more concerned with gaining permission to enter Shearer’s home than the answers Shearer was giving him.
The men spoke in a strange voice that seemed flat and expressionless and had extremely pale skin. This, along with the oddly intimidating behavior, was enough to scare Shearer and he chose not to let them into his house. Unfortunately for him, his experience was not yet at an end. The men ominously proclaimed that they would visit him again and, not long after, they turned up at his work. They made it clear that they wanted to talk about UFOs and once again asked permission to enter. When Shearer turned them down again, the men vanished and never returned—although Shearer believes that since then his phone has been tapped.
Loch Ness has always been a place of mystery and intrigue. Many people believe that the depths of the lake contain a primordial creature from the early days of the Earth and some have dedicated their lives to proving its existence. One man named Frederick Holiday was well known for being passionate about the study of cryptozoology and had spent years looking for evidence of creatures in the lake. Perhaps paranormal phenomena are more connected then we might have thought, because while out investigating the lake for the Loch Ness monster, Holiday had an experience that he would never forget.
Holiday looked up on a hill near the lake and spotted a strange man dressed in a black suit. While it wasn’t remarkable for people to sightsee along the lake, Holiday was struck by the fact that the man seemed to be looking directly at him. He was profoundly disturbed and reported feeling malevolence from the being that was staring him down. Before he could do anything, there was a bizarre noise and the man was gone as mysteriously as he had appeared. Just one year later, Holiday was back at the Loch for further studies when he had a heart attack—as he was being carried to the ambulance, he passed over the exact place where the strange man had been standing.
A professor of folklore named Peter Rojcewicz told of an experience that occurred one night in the college library while he was reading a book on UFOs that had been recommended to him by a colleague. He was just relaxing in a chair and reading his book when he noticed what appeared to be a leg and a shoe out of the corner of his eye. Before he knew it, there was a man sitting in a chair in front of him. The man immediately asked Rojcewicz about the book he was reading and questioned him on whether he had seen UFOs or was at all interested in the phenomenon.
When the professor stated that he wasn’t really that interested in the subject to begin with and was only reading the book to satisfy the suggestion of a colleague, the man became enraged and angrily asked him how he could not be interested in “the most important facts of the century.” Seemingly satisfied that the professor was not going to dig into the world of UFOs, the man left, but not before telling the professor to “go well on his purpose.” However, while it seems like this would be the end of it, it’s here that the story takes a turn for the extra creepy.
After the encounter, Rojcewicz got up to walk around the library. However, none of the librarians were anywhere to be seen. The same went for the guards and all the patrons. In fact, as far as he could tell, the library was completely deserted except for him. The professor returned to his chair in an attempt to gather his wits. In about an hour, according to the professor, he decided to get up and look around again—and this time he found that everything was as it should be.
Back in the 1960s, Jim Templeton took a photo of his daughter near Burgh Marsh, and before long it made big news. You might have heard of this photo as the Solway Firth Spaceman, which captures what looks like an unexplained figure in an astronaut outfit in the background. Stranger then the photo is the experience that Templeton had shortly after taking it. He was at work when a car arrived with two men who claimed to be working for the government. When asked, they refused to identify themselves beyond the codes #9 and #10. Even though their badges pointed to no specific government agency, Templeton agreed to get in the car with them and drive back to the Marsh to answer their questions.
The questions were pretty strange. Apart from the expected ones, like where it had happened and whether there were any other witnesses, they also wanted to know about the weather conditions and the behavior of the animals in the area. Templeton told the men that the domestic animals in the area had seemed scared on the day in question and had huddled together for protection.
It was after stating this that the men became much more hostile toward Templeton and started questioning the validity of his story. Of course, Templeton would not go to all this trouble simply to admit defeat, even if his story wasn’t entirely honest, and claimed that he was indeed telling the truth as far as he knew it. The men seemed to be unconvinced and headed back to their car. They drove off and simply left the baffled photographer in the dust to find his own way home.

500 Pages Of Australian Government UFO Files Unearthed
500 Pages Of Australian Government UFO Files Unearthed
By Paul Dean ufos-documenting-the-evidence.blogspot.com 6-7-15
A question for my readers.. What Australian federal government agency, other than the three armed branches of Department of Defence (DOD), or, the three air safety and/or transport regulation outfits, would be maintaining over 500 pages of hardcopy files related to the UFOs, or as I like to often say, the UAP (Unusual Aerial Phenomenon) riddle?? If you guessed the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) you’d be close, but I have tried them, and they drew a blank in their systems. If you guessed the Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO), well, that would be lovely, but I have barely even started on them yet, so I know nothing of what they may have. If you guessed the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), you’d be spot on; and I now have a bunch of information regarding their UFO files, in black-and-white, directly from their understaffed Freedom of Information (FOI) desk, as we shall see.
Firstly though, back in early 2013, when trawling through the National Archives of Australia (NAA) using the RecordSearch database, I came across a BOM file titled “Observations - General By Outside Authorities (Includes UFO)”. Its date range was listed as 1972-1981. Immediately, I had the NAA staff examine this material and release it to me in hard copy. Indeed, it contained reports from the general public, and other records, related to UAP. For anyone who wants to go over this file using the NAA’s system, file series is PP956/1 and the control symbol is 45/38. The barcode is 1854167. More on that later.
On the 17th January, 2015, I sent the BOM a very reasonable FOI request which stated:
I wish to submit a subsequent request under the Freedom of Information Act. I am seeking to obtain any files or other materials held by the BOM regarding the topic of “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” (UAP)and/or “ Unidentified Flying Objects” (UFOs). Specifically, I am looking for files containing:
1) Copies of enquiries from members of the general public to the BOM relating to UAP and/or UFOs;
2) Further BOM correspondence with the members of the public relating to the UAP and/or UFOs;
3) Copies of any previously and/or currently used standard templates or standard letters in such correspondence;
4) Internal BOM policies or guidelines for responding to Ministerial enquiries on the UAP and/or UFO topic;
5) Any files relating to the UAP and/or UFO matter itself, such as actual UAP and/or UFO case reports made to the BOM; studies or investigations related to UAP and/or UFOs; correspondence with other , embassies, etc related to UAP and/or UFOs.
I also went on to say that their agency had maintained such files previously, and I gave them actual details of such material, thus, potentially avoiding any misunderstandings regarding exactly what I thought they may have in their archives. The BOM’s FOI officer, Erin MacLatchy, rang me a week after my initial request to firstly clarify exactly what I was looking for, and secondly, to explain to me that she was inundated with difficult requests of late and that my enquiry would take some time to process. Fair enough. On the 4th of March I finally received a formal reply letter, known as a “Notice of Charges”, which also contains a official determination regarding if they have actually found anything to furnish me with. In this material, the BOM stated, amongst other things:
“The Bureau has undertaken a range of searches for documents, and is now in the process of decision-making. I have decided that you are liable to pay a charge pursuant to section 29 of the FOI Act in respect of a request for access to the documents that fall within your request. A copy of this section is provided with this letter.”
So, this basically says that they found the sort of material I was asking for, and it is going to cost me a bit of money to have them released. That was the good news. Here is the bad news:
“My preliminary assessment of the charge is $1005.00. This is based on 27 hours of searching for the documents requested, and 30 hours fordecision-making beyond the first 5 hours of decision-making time (which have been excluded from this assessment).
Over $1000 dollars? Not happening. Not on my watch. On the 11th of March, I appealed this fee on the grounds that it was by far the most expensive charge that I had ever encountered from an Australian government agency, including the complex encounters I have had with the Department of Defence, and, also, that the UFO topic was of public interest, because, you know, if one of these things slams into a packed airliner one day, then I think the average man on the street would be fairly concerned. Anyway, back comes the reply to my appeal on the 8th April 2015. In it, they clearly took my appeal efforts into account, however, those efforts resulted in merely this:
“Taking the above matters into account, I have decided to reduce the charges by 25 percent. Subject to my comments below, the total charge you are liable to pay is $753.75.”
I won’t detail what is involved in a second appeal, however, I will detail what was said on the phone when I rang the BOM FOI Desk officer two days later. The FOI staffer, Erin MacLatchy, explained to me that a hefty 500 pages of UFO-type files had been located, and the rest. She wasn’t able to say how many files made up this 500 pages worth of records exactly, or where they came from on a state-by-state basis, or the date ranges of found files, but, the mentioning of 500 pages was enough to put it all into perspective. See, if an FOI officer has to go through that much material to redact names, addresses, phone numbers, etc, and then color photocopy the whole lot, as well as handle administrative issues related to the FOI request, then, well, maybe a partially waived fee of $753.75 isn’t so unrealistic after all. So, instead of jumping in and spending a fortune, or, at the other end of the spectrum, throwing the towel in and forgetting it all, I decided to re-review the currently released BOM file that we do happen to have available–The very file I got released from the National Archives of Australia over 2 years ago.
As mentioned above, the old 1972-1981 BOM file which I got released in 2013, titled “Observations - General By Outside Authorities (Includes UFO)”, is held now physically by the NAA and available to all to review. It contains 297 pages of general public generated reports of meteorological phenomena, reports of apparent astronomical phenomena, reports of UFO/UAP activity, and various pieces of interagency and intra-agency correspondence.
The UFO/UAP events include:
1. A Mr G. Neads of Kelmscott, WA, took a picture in New Zealand about 1979. In the picture were bright circles of light. The Bureau passed the photograph to RAAF Base Pearce.
2. On the 14th Mar 1979 the BOM sent a letter to a G Hume of UFO Research Group, Perth. It said that the photograph you forwarded “...does not appear to show any object which could be recognised as part of a balloon train... I am not able to offer any alternative meteorological explanation of the object in the photograph.” The associated letter from PUFORG dated 28 Feb 1979 stated that the object was photographed at Ceduna, SA in Dec 1977. The photo is unfortunately not on file.
3. One the 27th May 1978, in Kings Rocks, Hyden, WA, at 2050hrs, apparently a dull orange object, low on the eastern horizon travelling north to south. It was described as faster than an aircraft, but slower than a meteor. No sound was heard, and the duration 1.5 to 2 minutes. It moved from north-east to south-south-west, above the clouds, and had a long orange tail. Furthermore, 3 or 4 weeks before, at dusk, a similar object was seen travelling in the opposite direction in the eastern sky.
4. A 16 Dec, 1976; 1225WST; Kalgoorlie meteorological office. M. Winterbourne saw an object travelling north-east to south-west. It passed south of overhead. It was white in colour, glowing, fuzzy at the edges and slightly pulsating. The shape was like a rugby ball, with an angular size of about half a degree. The duration of the sighting was some 10-12 seconds. Also, when at about 50 degree elevation in the south-west it seemed to stop for five seconds then dissolved in the same spot. On the same day at 1330WST Winterbourne received a telephone call from Dave Bower at the Scotia Mine, near Kalgoorlie reporting a “Strange object in the sky which was hardly moving. He gave me the bearings, but I failed to locate it at that time.” The same day at 1445WST - Winterbourne saw the same object as at 1225hrs. This one flashed across the sky from east to west. It was lost to sight as it diminished in angular size apparently due to distance. The duration of this event was stated as being, similar to the earlier sighting, 12 seconds.
So, if these cases about are some of the “best” reports in the currently available BOM file, what are the chances that the 500 or so pages of unavailable BOM records would contain anything significantly “better”? At a price-tag of $753.75, I have, at least for the moment, decided to drop this one and spend my money on other various FOI requests that will be far more likely to yield more fruitful and usable results. Most likely, the currently unreleased, unsanitised 500 pages of BOM files would almost uniquely contain low level sightings and various unrelated reports of meteorological and astronomical oddities, just like the above BOM file at the NAA contains. Certainly, if anyone wishes to contribute to getting this bunch of unknown records released I would be open to sharing the cost I think; or, better still, a whole bunch of us could chip in and share the material. The other option is to merely bide time until the BOM records management area simply box up the files and truck them to the NAA for cataloguing and storage. It would be then that we should have the material released for all to see.
Another 500 Pages Of Unseen Australian Government UFO Files Unearthed
I am seeking to obtain any files or other materials held by the BOM regarding the topic of “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” (UAP) and/or “Unidentified Flying Objects” (UFOs). Specifically, I am looking for files containing:
1) Copies of enquiries from members of the general public to the BOM relating to UAP and/or UFOs;
2) Further BOM correspondence with the members of the public relating to the UAP and/or UFOs;
3) Copies of any previously and/or currently used standard templates or standard letters in such correspondence;
4) Internal BOM policies or guidelines for responding to Ministerial enquiries on the UAP and/or UFO topic;
5) Any files relating to the UAP and/or UFO matter itself, such as actual UAP and/or UFO case reports made to the BOM; studies or investigations related to UAP and/or UFOs; correspondence with other government departments, embassies, etc related to UAP and/or UFOs

STRANGE LIGHTS OBSERVED OVER THE OCEAN IN NEW JERSEY JUNE 1, 2015 …….VENTNOR NEW JERSEY
While driving north on Ventnor ave. in Ventnor NJ, I notice what seemed like a quick flash of light traveling west to east above me. I didn’t think much of it. Within approx. 30 seconds there appeared to be what I thought was a large hazy search light moving in the sky but it seemed to be coming from above the clouds rather than from the ground. Within a couple more seconds a second similar light appeared and they would seem to meet each other and then bounce off each other. They did this a few time and then other lights joined in. At first just a third joined in and then more seemed to join in just seemingly to move randomly in the sky. this lasted about a min. Finally approx. 4 or 5 of these lights rapidly came in from the south east, which is from the ocean, in a straight line, seemed to reach a certain point and then changed direction flying back over the ocean. One light remained in the sky where these lights seemed to bounce off of and then just disappeared into thin air. My first reaction was some sort of search light until all of the formations and zooming and bouncing off each other. I turned down my street, parked the car rapidly walked toward the ocean searching the sky, there was nothing there. I thought I would see police or other people searching the sky there was no on out as it was a dreary rainy night. I went home and surly thought there would be an explanation on the news, I found none.

Date of sighting: June 5, 2015 Location of sighting: Earths orbit
The contrail of the rocket was caught in this video at 1:30-1:32 and shows a curly trail leaving Earth and going into orbit. I assume its the Space X rocket, but could also be some other craft leaving the planet. The trail should be straight, but the pig tail curl of it, is very confusing. I’m not sure, but I don’t believe typical rockets leave a curve like that. Tell me your thoughts on it. SCW

On August 7th 1999, London police received more than 36 reports of a gigantic sea serpent in the Thames. It was “at least 200 ft long and 5 yards across,” said one panicky witness. Despite all the sightings, no one managed to get a picture—or so it was thought. That day photographer John Collins was taking aerial photos of London from a private plane. He didn’t notice the object at the lower right until he examined the photo later.
Stone sculpture depicting a Vimana, flying machines in ancient India (1200 b.c.), Many Sanskrit epics, which were written in India more than two millennia ago, contain references to mythical flying machines called vimanas. Pointing to similarities between descriptions of vimanas and reports by people who claim to have seen UFOs, ancient alien theorists have suggested that astronauts from other planets visited India during ancient times.
Project Avalon – Klaus Dona: The Hidden History of the Human Race On the big cup you can see a perfect inlaid star constellation also showing the Orion and other stars. And inside the big cup it is very, very magnetic and outside the cup nearly nothing. Professional geologists are saying this is impossible because if a stone has metal particles inside the stone, it must be same magnetic from both sides.
Mystery rock from Earth or alien spaceship? This gigantic boulder with its belly laced like an oversized waffle grill continues to baffle visitors who come to the West Virginia side of Jennings Randolph Lake. There have been numerous theories and speculation as to its origin, ranging from a pictograph made by prehistoric man, an Indian carving, the impression of the skin pattern of a giant lizard, or evidence of a visit to Earth by ancient travelers from outer space.
The Bob White Object: In 1985, Missourian Bob White recovered physical evidence following a UFO encounter in Colorado. In 1996, Mr. White was flown to the classified Los Alamos National Labs for an analysis of his evidence. White was told by Senior staff that the object he recovered was extraterrestrial. The lab recanted their position later. Mr. White has passed polygraph examinations given by law enforcement professionals concerning the Los Alamos matter.

Mysterious medicine wheels ~ two persons, unknown of each other, separated by thousand miles noticed on one morning these strange marks on their skin. They had no idea how those get there. In July, 1944, Waldemar Julsrud, made a resounding discovery to Acambaro, Mexico. He found figurines that represent, among others, dinosaurs, unknown animals, reptiles, unknown divinities, and its everyday objects (pipes, musical instruments, etc.) Dinosaurs, how these people were able to represent animals they are supposed to never have known? Once again, the traditional archéologie makes a mistake and prefers, in spite of the obvious facts, stay in the error… Figurines from 2500 BC
Strange Being captured on a photo in1973 in Falkville, Alabama by Sheriff Jeff Greenhaw. “It looked like his head and neck were kind of made together… he was real bright, something like rubbing mercury on nickel, but just as smooth as glass-different angles give different lighting… when I saw him standing in the middle of the road I immediately stopped the car and asked if he was a foreigner, but no sound came out of his mouth.”

Mystery airships or phantom airships are a class of unidentified flying objects best known from a series of newspaper reports originating in the western United States and spreading east during 1896 and 1897. According to researcher Jerome Clark, airship reports were made worldwide from the 1880s to 1890s. Mystery airship reports are seen as a cultural predecessor to modern claims of extraterrestrial-piloted flying saucer-style UFOs. Typical airship reports involved unidentified lights, but more detailed accounts reported ships comparable to a dirigible. Reports of the alleged crewmen and pilots usually described them as human looking, although sometimes the crew claimed to be from Mars.[4] It was popularly believed that the mystery airships were the product of some genius inventor not ready to make knowledge of his creation public. For example, Thomas Edison was so widely speculated to be the mind behind the alleged airships that in 1897 he “was forced to issue a strongly worded statement” denying his responsibility. Author Gregory L. Reece has argued that mystery airships are unlikely to represent test flights of real human-manufactured dirigibles as no record of successful airship flights are known from the period and “it would have been impossible, not to mention irrational, to keep such a thing secret.
Japan-1803 One of the first modern UFO stories comes from Japan. This is the story of Utsuro-Bune, a mysterious alien woman who appeared suddenly from the depths of the Pacific Ocean on a round ship. A detailed study of paintings from the era of the Utsuru-Bune reveals an object that resembles a flying saucer, similar to those seen today. A pale, redheaded woman was inside the ship, wearing soft, light clothing clutching a box. Where did she come from? What was in the box? Nobody knows.

This footprint was cast near Glen Rose Texas at the Paluxy River. It measures 14 inches long, 7 wide. Paleontologists say the print is from a female. The cross cuts are from compression studies indicating that this person was approximately 10 feet tall and weighing 1,000 pounds. The human foot is that of an average female size 8.5. The casting is courtesy of Mt. Blanco Museum, Crosbyton TX.
On August 26th, 1966, Lt. Glen B, stationed at Minot AFB, ND, says a whole fleet of UFOs sailed over the base. “I was on alert because of the event (a famous incident had occurred the previous day; a UFO had shut down a nearby nuclear missile silo), and had my camera with me. There was a vibration in the air and a dozen cylinder-like objects flew from S to N directly overhead. They were completely silent and moved in an uneven arrow formation.”
“IT starts of slow, but do be prepared, sonic booms may be heard as the video progresses. Very little CGi in this video. The emphasis on this video is the war between an alien race, and the human race. See if you can notice any similarities in what the people are talking about, their credentials and status, before you go jumping to any conclusions. A war with aliens? What do you think? The information in this video seems to imply something very strange is going on all around us. Did you that there is an actual debate between ‘refraining to tell the public about some / certain discoveries of science,’ and telling them everything? What do you think? Need proof there is water on mars? Is so, watch this video, and realize that where there is water? There is life. On the topic of aliens. Life, on earth, was seeded from the debris of comets that flew passed earth.”
“If this is so, then there are highly organic compounds in comets (which they say are made up of water), and space. Going by the general census of evolution, it’d be safe to assume, that alien bacteria, and alien virus’s, from space, are falling down to the surface of earth ‘all the time.’ If there are alien virus’s and alien bacteria falling to the earth, and comets spawning life throughout the cosmos? Aliens are a most definite. Aliens are coming! Are you prepared?”
“I know it sounds crazy! Or are the demons? You be the judge. Exploring the ‘what if’ often gets one to the real answers. Explore. Is earth being invaded? Watch this video, and come to your own conclusions as, more often than not, the evidence is looking people in the face, and they don’t see it. When we realize ‘the aliens are there,’ above and below, do they press a reset button? Has humanity been on earth, and at the exact same point we are at now, before? The looping effect comes to mind. Step out of the box, explore knowledge.”Discovery Science
This is an explosive document all about our Governments involvement with Extraterrestrials going back right to the beginning. Its not for the faint hearted so you have been warned!
How is it possible to have so many different races and ethnicities if we all allegedly came from Adam and Eve? How is it conceivable to have 4 different blood types (A, B, AB, and O) along with 2 different Rh values (positive and negative) from two people of origin? Even if you look at Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, there wasn’t enough time for genetic mutation or evolution of the species to create such different diversity amongst our population.
According to Zecharia Sitchin’s work deciphering the Sumerian texts, our DNA was manipulated by the Anunnaki in order to create a slave race that would mine gold for them and their home planet, Nibiru. This is a very feasible proposition because it explains the importance of gold on our planet along with how we’ve been economic slaves for millennia, but it doesn’t explain why the Anunnaki would create a number of different races instead of one master slave race.
The second possibility is that we were seeded here by various star nations as part of a galactic experiment. In this scenario, race, ethinicity, blood type(s) and rh values are easily explained. It might also explain why there are so many different languages.

Skywatch & Summoning UFO video from San Diego, California 24-May-2015
Here is the footage by the skywatcher from San Diego, California on May 24, 2015. Many were in attendance to witness an incredible display of UFOs making contact in the skies above our group. At 13:18 in the video you’ll see a massive light pulse sent out from the UFO ship confirming connection with them while the folk signaled the lasers towards their craft.
Where are all the aliens? why we haven't made contact with other civilisations despite the size of the universe ?
Where are all the aliens? why we haven't made contact with other civilisations despite the size of the universe ?
There are billions of galaxies in the observable universe, each with up to a trillion stars, meaning there are likely trillions and trillions of habitable planets in the cosmos. But, if such worlds are so abundant, and life on Earth has been able to thrive, then why have we not found any aliens yet?
Humanity has rapidly advanced in the last 100 years, but this is considered 'a blink of an eye' in history of the 13.82-billion-year-old universe.
So it’s not inconceivable to think we might start visiting other stars in the future.
But it seems unlikely that we would be the first civilisation to reach this stage, so surely we should have heard from someone by now?
This has led people to suggest that true interstellar travel may be impossible or, more dauntingly, perhaps no civilisation can last long enough to make contact.
In a video created by YouTube channel Kurz Gesagt, they take a look at some of the factors that might have prevented us from making contact so far.
The first - and perhaps biggest - obstacle is space travel itself, which is extremely difficult, based on our current knowledge.
To colonise another planet with our current technologies, ‘a journey of maybe thousands of years needs to be survived by a population big enough to start from a scratch,' the narrator in the video explained.
Even if we could travel close to the speed of light, something inconceivable to us right now, it would take 100,000 years to cross the Milky Way.
So perhaps visiting another planet is out of the question.
It may also be a chance of cosmic circumstance that we have not yet made contact.
‘The universe is very old,’ the narrator in the video explained.
‘On Earth there's been life for at least 3.6 billion years. Intelligent human life for about 250,000 years.’
‘But only for about a century have we had the technology to communicate over great distances.
‘There might have been grand alien empires that stretched across thousands of systems and existed for millions of years, and we might just have missed them.’
Another problem could be that, even if there are other alien civilisations alive right now, it might just be that our methods of communication are too primitive at the moment.
‘Imagine sitting in a house with a morse code transmitter, you'd keep sending messages but nobody would answer, and you would feel pretty lonely,' said the narrator.
‘Maybe we're still undetectable for intelligent species.’
Another interesting concept is the idea of a Matrioshka Brain.
This would essentially be a virtual reality within which a species that had no desire to progress further could live in paradise for eternity - not unlike The Matrix, although slightly less dystopian.
We have been searching in earnest for planets outside the solar system for decades using telescopes like Kepler (illustrated) but, so far, no sign of life has been found. In addition, we have been sending our own signals out for more than a century but, again, no one seems to have taken notice
One theory for an advanced alien race is that they might harness the power of an entire star, known as a Dyson Sphere (illustrated). However, if such a structure existed, it is theorised that we would be able to detect its infrared signature - but a recent study found no such evidence
A giant structure containing the collective consciousness of the species inside this virtual reality would harness the power of a star.
‘If built around a red dwarf [star], this computer could be powered for up to ten trillion years,’ said the narrator.
‘Who would want to conquer the galaxy or make contact with other life forms if this were an option?’
It has been theorised that such a structure - sometimes called a Dyson Sphere - would be noticeable if it did exist, owing to the huge amounts of infrared radiation it would give off.
But a study by Penn State University in Pennsylvania to find one of these structures in 100,000 galaxies proved unsuccessful, although further attempts are likely to be made.
‘All these solutions to the Fermi Paradox have one problem,’ said the narrator.
‘We don't know where the borders of technology are. We could be close to the limit or nowhere near it.
‘And super technology awaits us, granting us immortality, transporting us to other galaxies, elevating us to the level of gods.
‘One thing we do have to acknowledge is that we really don't know anything.’
We have now found planets beyond the solar system that could possibly support life, such as Kepler-186f (illustrated), but the chances of visiting one of these planets at the moment with our current forms of propulsion is out of the question - and perhaps true interstellar travel is simply not possible
The video concludes by saying that, although we might be ‘embryos’ on a galactic time scale, the only way to find out our true place in the universe, and discover if we are alone, is to continue our search, the advancement of our species and, ultimately, the colonisation of other worlds.
It could even be that we are, in fact, the most advanced race in the universe.
If that is the case, then many experts have argued that we must do all we can to survive and preserve perhaps the most important discovery we’ve made so far: life itself, namely, us.

People at high latitudes are seeing glowing clouds in a dark night sky. They’re called noctilucent or “night-shining” clouds.
Glowing silver-blue clouds – called noctilucent or night shining clouds – sometimes light up summer night skies. They’re seen at high latitudes – say, about 45 degrees N. or S. – from May through August in the Northern Hemisphere and from November through February in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2015, the northern noctilucent cloud season has already begun. We’ve received some photos (below), and NASA’s AIM spacecraft has also detected these clouds drifting across the Arctic Circle. NASA said the first clouds appeared on May 19, 2015, a bit earlier than researchers expected. Follow the links below to learn more about this beautiful, seasonal phenomenon.

What are notilucent clouds? Noctilucent clouds form in the highest reaches of the atmosphere – the mesosphere – as much as 50 miles (80 km) above the Earth’s surface. They’re are thought to be made of ice crystals that form on fine dust particles from meteors. They can only form when temperatures are incredibly low and when there’s water available to form ice crystals.
Why do these clouds – which require such cold temperatures – form in the summer? It’s because of the dynamics of the atmosphere. You actually get the coldest temperatures of the year near the poles in summer at that height in the mesosphere.
Here’s how it works: during summer, air close to the ground gets heated and rises. Since atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude, the rising air expands. When the air expands, it also cools down. This, along with other processes in the upper atmosphere, drives the air even higher causing it to cool even more. As a result, temperatures in the mesosphere can plunge to as low as -210°F (-134°C).
In the Northern Hemisphere, the mesosphere often reaches these temperatures by mid-May, in most years.
Since the clouds are so sensitive to the atmospheric temperatures, they can act as a proxy for information about the wind circulation that causes these temperatures. They can tell scientists that the circulation exists first of all, and tell us something about the strength of the circulation.

What does the science say? Scientists studying these clouds have included those from NASA’s AIM (Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere) satellite. This satellite, launched in 2007, has observed noctilucent clouds using several onboard instruments to collect information such as temperature, atmospheric gases, ice crystal size, changes in the clouds, as well as the amount of meteoric space dust that enters the atmosphere.
Scientists have used data from this satellite to study the details of how noctilucent are formed and why they change over time. In 2014, they announced they had discovered unexpected teleconnections in noctilucent clouds. For example, Cora Randall, AIM science team member, said in April 2014:
… we have found that the winter air temperature in Indianapolis, Indiana, is well correlated with the frequency of noctilucent clouds over Antarctica.
The video below has more about the teleconnections in noctilucent clouds.
When the sun is below the ground horizon but visible from the high altitude of noctilucent clouds, sunlight illuminates these clouds, causing them to glow in the dark night sky. Illustration via NASA.
How can I see notilucent clouds? If you want to see the clouds, what steps should you take? Remember, you have to be at a relatively high latitude on Earth to see them: between about 45° and 60° North or South latitude.
For best results, look for these clouds from about May through August in the Northern Hemisphere, and from November through February in the Southern Hemisphere.
Noctilucent clouds are primarily visible when the sun is just below the horizon, say, from about 90 minutes to about two hours after sunset or before sunrise. At such times, when the sun is below the ground horizon but visible from the high altitude of noctilucent clouds, sunlight illuminates these clouds, causing them to glow in the dark night sky.
Noctilucent clouds can be seen from space, too. Astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) took this photo on January 5, 2013, when ISS was over the Pacific Ocean south of French Polynesia. Bottom line: Noctilucent or night-shining clouds form in the highest reaches of the atmosphere – the mesosphere – as much as 50 miles (80 km) above the Earth’s surface. They’re seen during summer in polar regions.
MAP: The surprising places where Americans are running into UFOs
MAP: The surprising places where Americans are running into UFOs
On March 13, 1997, near Phoenix, five — or maybe seven — bright lights appeared in the night sky in a "V" formation, like a strange flock of birds. Local news outlets were flooded with reports of what is now known as the Phoenix Lights, one of the more tantalizing "mass sightings" in the past few decades for those who Want To Believe.
Sixty-four people reported the lights to the National UFO Reporting Center.
"My wife and I were walking our dogs on the south side of South Mountain in the mountain park when we saw the ufo come over the mountain at low altitude," one account reads. "It was s i l e n t and had 5 white globes along the leading edge of a black triangle shaped object which blacked out the stars and was about a mile wide."
But there's another way to see the Phoenix Lights: According to a new map plotting more than 90,000 sightings from the National UFO Reporting Center's database, it's one of the most widely reported sightings of the past several decades.
The interactive map, from Max Galka, plots each distinct sighting in the database with green and blue circles. Blue circles represent sightings reported by just one witness; green circles mean there are multiple accounts of the same event. The bigger the green circle, the more reported sightings there are of that particular event.
The map looks like this:
(Courtesy of Max Galka)
Who knew the Chicago area was such a hotbed of UFO activity? Six of the 10 biggest UFO sightings on the map, as ranked by number of witnesses, were in Illinois, Galka noted in an analysis.
The biggest was the Tinley Park Lights. UFO enthusiasts might know about them, but the Tinley Park sightings don't even have their own Wikipedia page.
The mass sighting in Phoenix is represented by that huge green dot in the southwest. In the interactive version, available here, the green dots are clickable. The map will then pull up all of the witness accounts that are available, along with any photo or video "evidence" of aliens among us.
The database goes back nearly a century, Galka told The Washington Post, but the further back you go, the less complete it is. The National UFO Reporting Center started collecting first-person accounts about 20 years ago and accepts reports pertaining to any date in history. The data from recent years is much more robust, as witnesses can report what they saw shortly after it happened.
A portion of the UFO map, zoomed in on Chicago, with details from the Tinley Park Lights. (Courtesy of Max Galka)
"That's true by number of reports per capita," Galka told The Post in an interview.
"But it turns out that the important sightings, the ones that have some credibility behind them, are in dense areas," Galka said.
By "credible," Galka doesn't mean confirmed sightings of aliens. Instead, viewing America's UFO sightings by number of witnesses, "credible" simply means that witnesses were likely responding to some actual event, which they interpreted as a UFO.
"Everyone hears 'UFO' and they think urban legends, like bigfoot," Galka said. "But when you have these big sightings that were seen by thousands of people, you can debate what's up there, but that's not urban legend, that's just a mystery."
As the Phoenix Lights demonstrates, that mystery can linger even after a reasonable explanation. Lt. Col. Ed Jones, a pilot at the time with the Air National Guard, said that he was part of a small squadron of A-10s flying over the area that evening. The lights, he said, were flares that he and the other pilots released from their planes.
Galka noticed another interesting detail that might help explain some of the other mysterious sightings: Americans have a tendency to see quite a lot more UFOs in the sky right around the Fourth of July, when towns across the country plan fireworks shows.

Circular orbits of small exoplanets: Which Earth-sized exoplanets are potentially habitable?

Circular orbits of small exoplanets: Which Earth-sized exoplanets are potentially habitable?
Viewed from above, our solar system’s planetary orbits around the sun resemble rings around a bulls-eye. Each planet, including Earth, keeps to a roughly circular path, always maintaining the same distance from the sun.
For decades, astronomers have wondered whether the solar system’s circular orbits might be a rarity in our universe. Now a new analysis suggests that such orbital regularity is instead the norm, at least for systems with planets as small as Earth.
In a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal, researchers from MIT and Aarhus University in Denmark report that 74 exoplanets, located hundreds of light-years away, orbit their respective stars in circular patterns, much like the planets of our solar system.
These 74 exoplanets, which orbit 28 stars, are about the size of Earth, and their circular trajectories stand in stark contrast to those of more massive exoplanets, some of which come extremely close to their stars before hurtling far out in highly eccentric, elongated orbits.
“Twenty years ago, we only knew about our solar system, and everything was circular and so everyone expected circular orbits everywhere,” says Vincent Van Eylen, a visiting graduate student in MIT’s Department of Physics. “Then we started finding giant exoplanets, and we found suddenly a whole range of eccentricities, so there was an open question about whether this would also hold for smaller planets. We find that for small planets, circular is probably the norm.”
Ultimately, Van Eylen says that’s good news in the search for life elsewhere. Among other requirements, for a planet to be habitable, it would have to be about the size of Earth — small and compact enough to be made of rock, not gas. If a small planet also maintained a circular orbit, it would be even more hospitable to life, as it would support a stable climate year-round. (In contrast, a planet with a more eccentric orbit might experience dramatic swings in climate as it orbited close in, then far out from its star.)
“If eccentric orbits are common for habitable planets, that would be quite a worry for life, because they would have such a large range of climate properties,” Van Eylen says. “But what we find is, probably we don’t have to worry too much because circular cases are fairly common.”
Star-crossed numbers
In the past, researchers have calculated the orbital eccentricities of large, “gas giant” exoplanets using radial velocity — a technique that measures a star’s movement. As a planet orbits a star, its gravitational force will tug on the star, causing it to move in a pattern that reflects the planet’s orbit. However, the technique is most successful for larger planets, as they exert enough gravitational pull to influence their stars.
Researchers commonly find smaller planets by using a transit-detecting method, in which they study the light given off by a star, in search of dips in starlight that signify when a planet crosses, or “transits,” in front of that star, momentarily diminishing its light. Ordinarily, this method only illuminates a planet’s existence, not its orbit. But Van Eylen and his colleague Simon Albrecht, of Aarhus University, devised a way to glean orbital information from stellar transit data.
They first reasoned that if they knew the mass and radius of a planet’s star, they could calculate how long a planet would take to orbit that star, if its orbit were circular. The mass and radius of a star determines its gravitational pull, which in turn influences how fast a planet travels around the star.
By calculating a planet’s orbital velocity in a circular orbit, they could then estimate a transit’s duration — how long a planet would take to cross in front of a star. If the calculated transit matched an actual transit, the researchers reasoned that the planet’s orbit must be circular. If the transit were longer or shorter, the orbit must be more elongated, or eccentric.
Not so eccentric
To obtain actual transit data, the team looked through data collected over the past four years by NASA’s Kepler telescope — a space observatory that surveys a slice of the sky in search of habitable planets. The telescope has monitored the brightness of over 145,000 stars, only a fraction of which have been characterized in any detail.
The team chose to concentrate on 28 stars for which mass and radius have previously been measured, using asteroseismology — a technique that measures stellar pulsations, which reflect a star’s mass and radius.
These 28 stars host multiplanet systems — 74 exoplanets in all. The researchers obtained Kepler data for each exoplanet, looking not only for the occurrence of transits, but also their duration. Given the mass and radius of the host stars, the team calculated each planet’s transit duration if its orbit were circular, then compared the estimated transit durations with actual transit durations from Kepler data.
Across the board, Van Eylen and Albrecht found the calculated and actual transit durations matched, suggesting that all 74 exoplanets maintain circular, not eccentric, orbits.
“We found that most of them matched pretty closely, which means they’re pretty close to being circular,” Van Eylen says. “We are very certain that if very high eccentricities were common, we would’ve seen that, which we don’t.”
Van Eylen says the orbital results for these smaller planets may eventually help to explain why larger planets have more extreme orbits.
“We want to understand why some exoplanets have extremely eccentric orbits, while in other cases, such as the solar system, planets orbit mostly circularly,” Van Eylen says. “This is one of the first times we’ve reliably measured the eccentricities of small planets, and it’s exciting to see they are different from the giant planets, but similar to the solar system.”

Crashing comets may explain mysterious lunar swirls
Brown University researchers have produced new evidence that lunar swirls — wispy bright regions scattered on the Moon’s surface — were created by several comet collisions over the last 100 million years.
In a paper published in the journal Icarus, the researchers use state-of-the-art computer models to simulate the dynamics of comet impacts on the lunar soil. The simulations suggest that such impacts can account for many of the features in the mysterious swirls.
“We think this makes a pretty strong case that the swirls represent remnants of cometary collisions,” said Peter Schultz, a planetary geoscientist at Brown University. Schultz co-wrote the paper with his former graduate student, Megan Bruck Syal, who is now a researcher at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Lunar swirls have been the source of debate for years. The twisting, swirling streaks of bright soil stretch, in some cases, for thousands of miles across the lunar surface. Most are found on the unseen far side of the Moon, but one famous swirl called Reiner Gamma can be seen by telescope on the southwestern corner of the Moon’s near side. “It was my favorite object to look at when I was an amateur astronomer,” Schultz said.
At first glance, the swirls do not appear to be related to large impact craters or any other topography. “They simply look as if someone had finger-painted the surface,” Schultz said. “There has been an intense debate about what causes these features.”
In the 1970s, scientists discovered that many of the swirls were associated with anomalies of the Moon’s crustal magnetic field. That revelation led to one hypothesis for how the swirls may have formed. Rocks below the surface in those spots might contain remanent magnetism from early in the Moon’s history, when its magnetic field was much stronger than it is now. It had been proposed that those strong, locally trapped magnetic fields deflect the onslaught of the solar wind, which was thought to slowly darken the Moon’s surface. The swirls would remain brighter than the surrounding soil because of those magnetic shields.
But Schultz had a different idea for how the swirls may form — one that has its roots in watching the lunar modules land on the Moon during the Apollo program.
“You could see that the whole area around the lunar modules was smooth and bright because of the gas from the engines scoured the surface,” Schultz said. “That was part of what got me started thinking comet impacts could cause the swirls.”
Comets carry their own gaseous atmosphere called a coma. Schultz thought that when small comets slam into the Moon’s surface — as they occasionally do — the coma may scour away loose soil from the surface, not unlike the gas from the lunar modules. That scouring may produce the bright swirls.
Schultz first published a paper outlining the idea in the journal Nature in 1980. That paper focused on how the scouring of the delicate upper layer of lunar soils could produce brightness consistent with the swirls. The structure of the grains in the upper layer (termed the “fairy castle structure” because of the way grains stick together) scatters sun’s rays, causing a dimmer and darker appearance. When this structure is stripped away, the remaining smoothed surface would be brighter than unaffected areas, especially when the sun’s rays strike it at certain angles. For Reiner Gamma on the lunar nearside, those areas appear brightest during the crescent Moon just before sunrise.
As computer simulations of impact dynamics have gotten better, Schultz and Bruck-Syal decided it might be time to take a second look at whether comet impacts could produce that kind of scouring. Their new simulations showed that the impact of a comet coma plus its icy core would indeed have the effect of blowing away the smallest grains that sit atop the lunar soil. The simulations showed that the scoured area would stretch for perhaps thousands of kilometers from the impact point, consistent with the swirling streaks that extend across the Moon’s surface. Eddies and vortices created by the gaseous impact would explain the swirls’ twisty, sinuous appearance.
The comet impact hypothesis could also explain the presence of magnetic anomalies near the swirls. The simulations showed that a comet impact would melt some of the tiny particles near the surface. When small, iron-rich particles are melted and then cooled, they record the presence of any magnetic field that may be present at the time. “Comets carry with them a magnetic field created by streaming charged particles that interact with the solar wind,” Schultz said. “As the gas collides with the lunar surface, the cometary magnetic field becomes amplified and recorded in the small particles when they cool.”
Taken together, the results offer a more complete picture of how the swirls form, the researchers say.
“This is the first time anyone has looked at this using modern computational techniques,” Schultz said. “Everything we see in simulations of comet impacts is consistent with the swirls as we see them on the Moon. We think this process provides a consistent explanation, but may need new Moon missions to finally resolve the debate.”
