Rosetta, the European space craft orbiting the comet, is also said to have detected strange 'clusters' of organic material that look suspiciously like viral particles.
But neither Rosetta nor its lander are equipped to search for direct evidence of life after a proposal to include this in the mission was allegedly laughed out of court.
Astronomer and astrobiologist Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, who was involved in the mission planning 15 years ago, said: 'I wanted to include a very inexpensive life-detection experiment. At the time it was thought this was a bizarre proposition.'
He and colleague Dr Max Wallis, from the University of Cardiff, believe 67P and other comets like it could provide homes for living microbes similar to the 'extremophiles' that inhabit the most inhospitable regions of the Earth.
Comets may have helped to sow the seeds of life on Earth and possibly other planets such as Mars early in the life of the solar system, they argue.

ROSETTA: THE STORY SO FAR
The Rosetta probe, which was carrying Philae, launched into space in 2004, using the gravity of Earth and Mars to slingshot its way towards comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
It chased the comet through space for more than ten years, entering orbit in August 2014.
After a four-billion-mile (6.4 billion km) journey, the probe then successfully released the Philae lander (artist's impression shown left) from its grip to land on the comet on 12 November 2014, travelling at 3.3ft (one metre) a second relative to the comet.
But when it first made contact with the surface it failed to fire harpoons that would have kept it attached to the comet.
This resulted in it bouncing twice above the comet before landing.
Philae managed to perform more than 90 per cent of its goals on the surface before running out of power. Rosetta, meanwhile, continued to orbit and study the comet.
From data collected by the two probes, Esa said that water on the comet was different to that on Earth - suggesting water on our world came from an asteroid, not a comet.
Now, after a wait of seven months, enough sunlight is reaching Philae's solar panels that it has been able to communicate again.
It will now turn on some of its instruments again to perform new science. Whether there is any ice in the cliff it is wedged under, though, is unknown.
The astronomers will present their case for life on 67P at the Royal Astronomical Society's National Astronomy Meeting in Llandudno, Wales.
Philae made history last November after detaching from its Rosetta mothership and bouncing down onto the surface of the comet, coming to rest close to a cliff or crater wall.
After being forced into hibernation by the lack of sunlight reaching its solar panels, the probe has delighted scientists by 'waking up' as the comet races towards the sun.
The comet, described as looking like a 'rubber duck', has two lobes joined by a thinner neck and measures around 2.5 miles (4km) across.
Currently it is about 176.7 million miles (284.4 million km) from Earth and travelling at more than 73,000 mph (117,482km/h).
Professor Wickramasinghe and Dr Wallis have carried out computer simulations that suggest microbes could inhabit watery regions of the comet.
Organisms containing anti-freeze salts could be active at temperatures as low as -40°C, their research shows.
The comet has a black hydrocarbon crust overlaying ice, smooth icy 'seas', and flat-bottomed craters containing 'lakes' of re-frozen water overlain with organic debris.
Professor Wickramasinghe said: 'What we're saying is that data coming from the comet seems to unequivocally, in my opinion, point to micro-organisms being involved in the formation of the icy structures, the preponderance of aromatic hydrocarbons, and the very dark surface.

In total, more than 70 per cent of the comet's surface has now been imaged and beamed back to earth
'These are not easily explained in terms of pre-biotic chemistry.
'The dark material is being constantly replenished as it is boiled off by heat from the sun. Something must be doing that at a fairly prolific rate.'
He said several cracks in the ice had been shown to be 'spewing out material' that is falling on to the surface.
'I think the microbiotic activity just under the surface results in gas which builds up to the point where the overlaying layers of ice can't withstand the stresses,' said the professor.
Biological mechanisms were the likely explanation for the large quantities of organic gases that had been observed around comets, along with water, he maintained.
Philae had confirmed the presence of 'ring and linear chain' organic molecules on the surface of 67P that were more complex than simple hydrocarbons such as methane, said Professor Wickramasinghe.
However it was impossible to say if these represented amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.
In June, Philae made contact for a second time after seven months of hibernation. Professor Monica Grady from the Open University, who runs an instrument on the lander, told MailOnline that Philae has woken up 'just in time' to study the comet's most exciting phase

One tantalising find was the discovery of organic 'particle clusters' by Rosetta in the gases surrounding the comet, which resembled viral particles collected from the Earth's upper atmosphere.
'They might be viral particles,' said Professor Wickramasinghe.
As the comet reaches its closest point to the sun - a distance of 121 million miles (195 million km) - its family of micro-organisms is likely to become more active, the scientists said.
Professor Wickramasinghe, director of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology, believes it is time for a complete shift of thinking about the possibility of alien life.
Rosetta has already shown that the comet is not to be seen as a deep-frozen inactive body, but supports geological processes and could be more hospitable to micro-life than our Arctic and Antarctic regions.

He said: 'The current estimate for the number of extra-solar planets in the galaxy is 140 billion plus.
'Planets that can harbour life are really quite abundant in the galaxy, and the next neighbouring system to us is only spitting distance away.
'I think it's inevitable that life is going to be a cosmic phenomenon.
'Five hundred years ago it was a struggle to have people accept that the Earth was not the centre of the universe.
'After that revolution our thinking has remained Earth-centred in relation to life and biology.
'It's deeply ingrained in our scientific culture and it will take a lot of evidence to kick it over.'
He pointed out that when proof of organic molecules in space emerged in the 1970s 'the rebuttals were fierce' from the scientific establishment.
Future missions to 67P and other comets should include life-seeking instruments, he said. But space agencies appeared reluctant to engage in a serious quest for life that risked challenging 'a long established paradigm'.
Dr Wallis said: 'Rosetta has already shown that the comet is not to be seen as a deep-frozen inactive body, but supports geological processes and could be more hospitable to micro-life than our Arctic and Antarctic regions.'
The Royal Astronomical Society told The Independent the astronomers have created 'a model that suggests micro-organisms probably require liquid water bodies to colonise the comet and could inhabit cracks in the ice and snow'.

Philae will now join the comet as it makes its closest approach to the sun on 13 August 2015. After that, the comet will begin to move away back out into the solar system. It is expected that Philae will no longer have enough sunlight to continue working by about mid-October
WHAT WILL PHILAE DO NOW?
Once Philae became operational again, scientists checked to see it is healthy and turned its instruments on.
With ten instruments on board, and only 24 Watts of power available, Philae will use its instruments one by one in a specific order that is yet to be decided.
Some of these instruments will have a chance to perform advanced science that they didn't get a chance to perform during the brief 60 hours of operation after it landed on 12 November.

For example, the Ptolemy instrument - which analyses samples from the surface - was only able to study dust last time around.
This time, the team will be hoping it can study ice on the comet.
Philae will also take images of its surroundings and send these back to Earth, so that scientists can get a better understanding of what sort of position it is in.
This will help them work out how much sunlight will fall on the probe, and how long it can stay operational for again - expected to be weeks, and possibly months, as the comet reaches its closest point to the sun on 13 August.
After this, as it gets further away, Philae will eventually run out of power and go into hibernation for a second time - this time for good.
Did scientists find alien life on a comet? No. A pair of astronomers today, though, presented their case at the Royal Astronomical Society’s National Astronomy Meeting in Llandudno, Wales that the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which has been the target of the Rosetta probe and Philae lander in the last year, has a surface that suggests an underlying layer of micro-organisms.
Professors Max Wallis of the University of Cardiff and Chandra Wickramasinghe of the University of Buckingham posit the comet's black crust, indications of an icy sublayer below the crust and pools of refrozen water with "organic-rich debris" could be the result of microbes, as in life.
The key words here are could be. It's a hypothesis.
The Rosetta mission to the comet launched in 2004 by the European Space Agency with the goal of putting its lander Philae on the comet's surface, which was accomplished in November 2014.
The lander had a bumpy landing though, bouncing twice off the surface of the comet before settling into a more shady location of the rubber duck-shaped comet than intended, which had the effect of not allowing the lander to recharge from the sun. Its initial findings were gathered on battery power and sent back to Earth before the lander powered down. As the comet has approached the sun though, which it orbits every 6 1/2 years on a path between Earth and Jupiter, Philae recently made contact again, but it has been limited.
The comet is currently 123 million miles from the sun and 175 million miles from Earth. It will make its closest approach to the sun in August.
"Increasing rates of gassing as Rosetta follows comet 67P around its 1.3 AU perihelion will hopefully reveal the activation of possible micro-organisms as well as the nature and prevalence of near-surface ices," reads the astronomers' outline presentation.
More details of the two astronomers' presentation were reported in The Guardian today, which reported, "Neither Rosetta nor Philae are equipped to search for direct evidence of life." You can read that here.
So is there life on this comet? There's no conclusive data at this point, and that is not the purpose of the Rosetta mission, but there's always hope and those who think it's worth looking for.
Wickramasinghe has been in the spotlight before for pushing hypotheses about life in outer space. On Slate's Bad Astronomy blog, Phil Plait wrote in 2013 a criticism of Wickramasinghe's research.
"Wickramasinghe is a proponent of the idea of panspermia: the notion that life originated in space and was brought to Earth via meteorites. It’s an interesting idea and not without some merits," Plait wrote. " However, Wickramasinghe is fervent proponent of it. Like, really fervent. So much so that he attributes everything to life in space. He’s said that the flu comes from space. He’s said SARS comes from space. He’s claimed living cells found in the stratosphere come from space."
Meanwhile, Rosetta continues to orbit the comet as it approaches the sun. A recent discovery of giant sinkholes was outlined in the journal Nature. You can read more about that here.

It’s no coincidence that alien abductions, which presumably never happen, are described so consistently. Inside the neurological patterns that bring extraterrestrial fears to life.
Recently, Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves, best known for her hit single “Follow Your Arrow,” declared that her greatest fear is being abducted by aliens. It might surprise you to learn that such a successful, rational-appearing person would espouse such an irrational concern, until you realize how many people do too.
A 2013 poll revealed that 50 percent of Americans believe that aliens exist in the universe. One in four asserted that aliens have actually visited Earth. The question is not whether people have actually been abducted by aliens (we will assume they haven’t) but rather why do they believe that they have?
The first instinct is to presume that self-proclaimed abductees are just crazy. On the contrary: Alien-believers are no more likely to suffer from psychiatric illness than the average person. Psychological assessments show that abductees may score high on tests of creativity and display a proclivity for fantasy, but that doesn’t make them crazy.
Not only do abductees tend to be ordinary people, but they also tell remarkably similar stories of their alien contact. The plot goes something like this: victims are lying down and paralyzed when the intruders arrive. Shadowy, gray or white figures glare down at them as they poke, prod, and otherwise manipulate their bodies. Victims may hear footsteps or whispers and feel vibrations or electric-shock sensations. Most prominently, the experience is confusing and terrifying, so much so that it causes lasting feelings of fear and depression, the consequences of true trauma.
The details of the story vary from person to person, but the narrative arc is the same. Why is this experience, which presumably never happens in reality, described so consistently from person to person? It’s because they’re telling the truth. Abductees truly do suffer through a mysterious, terrifying episode, defined by these strange sensations. It just has nothing to do with aliens. It has to do with an anomaly with the neurologic transition from sleep.
During REM sleep, as we are immersed in our most vivid dreams, our muscles are paralyzed. The normal transition to wakefulness involves two major changes in the brain: the return of conscious awareness and the regaining of muscle control. Though these two functions arise from different brain regions, they reactivate simultaneously when we wake up each morning.
At least, that’s what usually happens.
In the phenomenon of sleep paralysis, a delay occurs between the return of awareness and the activation of muscle control. Sleep paralysis renders a person awake and aware of her surroundings, but completely paralyzed for seconds to several minutes, though episodes lasting over an hour have been reported. Visual and auditory hallucinations often accompany the paralysis. People hear strange sounds, see ghastly figures, and can feel the presence of foreign beings in their midst. Sleep paralysis is surprisingly common, affecting about 8 percent of the population. For most people, the paralysis lasts for only a few seconds and they don’t have the complete, hallucinatory experience. For those who do, however, sleep paralysis is a waking nightmare.
It’s no coincidence that the symptoms of sleep paralysis match up almost perfectly to those of alien abduction. In both cases, victims feel physically pinned down while sensing a sinister foreign presence. Each element of the abduction story can be generated neurologically, including the aliens themselves. In fact, by stimulating the temporal lobes of volunteers, neuroscientists have successfully elicited the feeling of contact with shadowy figures.
Sleep paralysis appears to be an excellent explanation for the typical alien abduction story, yet the topic of alien abduction has not been put to rest and there continue to be reports of incidents, week after week. The question is: When a rational person suffers an episode of sleep paralysis, why does he elect to believe something as irrational as an extraterrestrial encounter as the underlying cause?
When the brain is confronted with confusing or contradictory signals, it instinctively seeks out a way to reconcile them. For example, consider the case of the Cotard delusion, a psychiatric condition in which people believe themselves to be dead. In the brain, it’s thought to arise from a broken connection between the sensory and emotional systems. As a result, patients develop a strange symptom: When they see familiar people, they don’t feel any emotion toward them. Even when seeing their closest friends or family, they feel a mysterious emotional distance. They feel disconnected from others, removed from the world.
Faced with such a peculiar experience, the brain searches for a logical explanation.
What could explain a sudden emotional distance from others, a feeling of being separated from reality? That sounds a lot like death. At least, that’s the way death is portrayed in our culture. For people who accept that depiction of death, it seems to align with their strange psychological symptoms. Thought of this way, their claim of being dead starts to seem reasonable, even logical.
Similarly, when someone with sleep paralysis suffers the terrifying, hallucinatory experience, the immediate question is: What just happened to me? The brain searches through our knowledge and memory for an explanation. What story can it string together to make sense of being paralyzed, feeling poked and prodded, and the vision of hazy, gray figures? That sounds a lot like alien abduction—at least it does in America.
In other cultures, sleep paralysis leads to a variety of other supernatural narratives. In the Caribbean, there are reports of the phenomenon called “Kokma,” in which the spirits of unbaptized babies jump on a person’s chest and grasp his throat. In Mexico, sleep paralysis is called subirse el muerto, or “a dead body climbed on top of me.” In the UK, the episodes were called “stand-stills,” caused by the spirit leaving the body when asleep but not returning upon waking.
Culture helps dictate the ideas we are most likely to believe, the direction toward which the brain’s arrow will point. In Mexico, the brain cites local lore about the rise of the dead in explaining sleep paralysis, but in America alien abductions are the fear of choice. It’s no wonder that TheX-Files is getting a reboot on television. Aliens are just as much a pop-culture phenomenon today as they were 20 years ago when the show originally aired.
When people suffer from sleep paralysis, the brain points to the cultural representation of alien abduction not only because it fits the symptoms, but because it is low hanging fruit. Perhaps it’s something they always wondered about, feared, or even suspected to be true. What’s more, abductees can take comfort in the knowledge that they are not alone in having that belief. There are many other believers out there, including famous country singers. The brain follows our inner arrow to create a story that is not only logical, but one we are likely to believe.

The truth is out there – if we could only find it
Aliens are usually portrayed in fiction as everything from little green men to reptilians.
But the truth could be that they look just like us.
Professor Simon Conway Morris, of Cambridge University says, in his new book The Runes Of Evolution, that life on planets that are similar to Earth could have evolved along the same lines as we did.
Plant and animal life could look similar to ours and the inhabitants could look human.
He also tackles the question many sceptics ask. If aliens exist, why haven’t they been in contact?
“The likelihood of intelligence evolving and actively engaging in some sort of trans-galactic expeditions doesn’t seem to be completely beyond the realm of possibility,” he says.
So they could be on their way and arrive at some time in the future – or maybe they’ve been visiting for centuries but never let on.
There are, off course, plenty of people who believe that is the case.
They say they designed the pyramids, built Atlantis, laid out landing sites for spaceships in Peru and cross-bred with locals after crash landing.
There are those who believe Jesus and Buddha were aliens from Venus and St Peter came from Mars.
These are not silly people – they don’t believe the moon is made from green cheese.
But there are those who say the moon is actually an alien spaceship that has been monitoring our progress for millennia.
If aliens have been visiting throughout history it supports the theory that they do, indeed, look like us.
A little green man or seven foot reptilian might have caused a stir trying to blend into a middle ages society that was prone to burn people at the stake for being different.
Before tourism, strangers arriving in a far distant place tried to blend in.
I did when I arrived from Manchester.
But then, I’ve been convinced for years that I’m an alien, that I was a cuckoo in the nest dropped off by a spaceship as an experiment to see if beings from another world could survive and thrive on Earth.
Hasn’t everybody had that
thought at some point?
The universe is vast and there are, without doubt, similar planets to ours where life might have evolved along similar lines.
Worlds that might have towns like Huddersfield and people like us.
Don’t you ever stare up at the night sky and think that maybe up there, third star from the sun, there’s a bloke staring back with that ageless question in the back of his mind: I wonder if Town will get promoted next season?

By Steven Bancarz| Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night terrified and been unable to move? Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon that occurs when a person wakes up from a sleep being unable to move, speak, or react. It usually occurs as a person is about to fall asleep or as they are about to wake up out of sleep, and is usually accompanied with breathing difficulties.
This may not sound like a big deal for those who haven’t experienced it, but it can be terrifying at times. You are totally paralyzed and unable to wake yourself up. When you are in a state of paralysis, it is the brains natural response to think that you are under attack, so your brain naturally enters into a state of “flight” mode.
Sometimes, sleep paralysis is accompanied by hallucinations or the feeling that there is an intruder in the room. Some people even claim to sense the presence of demonic entities that sit on their chest, or aliens that stand over top of them. In fact, the Chinese used to call this experience “Gui Ya” which means “ghost pressure”, and they believed that a ghost would come sit on your chest as you sleep and paralyze you.
What is the scientific reason reason this is happening? Well, there isn’t any confirmed theory out there yet. The most plausible scientific explanation is that it is thought to occur when the mind wakes up out of REM sleep while the body is still in a state of atonia to prevent sleepers from acting out their dreams. I would agree with this for the most part, but I have experienced sleep paralysis with my eyes open as I was sitting up in bed after waking up from a sleep, so I know for a fact my brain was not in a REM state of sleep because I had already been awake for several minutes.
In this article, we will look at what to do to stay calm during sleep paralysis, how to prevent it from happening, and how to use it to your own spiritual advantage.

.I have had a great deal of experiences with sleep paralysis, and have now reached a point where it no longer bothers me anymore. The first time it happened to me, I tried to fight it and forcefully wake myself up from it. This only caused me fear and anxiety and was completely ineffective. If you wake up and realize you are in a state of sleep paralysis, don’t resist it. The minute you resist it, you will start freaking out. Accept it, and treat it as an opportunity to practice patience and peace of mind.
Conscious breathing really helps keeping your mind from entering freak-out mode. Breathe in slowly and consciously, and exhale slowly and consciously. Don’t panic. Make it your mission when you are in sleep paralysis to be as calm as you can, and treat it as a chance to be fully present within your body. Enter a meditative state of mind, and it will shortly pass with time.
There have been times where I have heard voices in my ear while being paralyzed, but I remained calm by meditating and practicing conscious breathing. It’s kind of like taking psychedelic drugs. You can give yourself a bad experience by what you choose to think about and where you allow your mind to wander.
It can only have power over you if you give it your power. Keep your attention inside your breath. Pretend that you chose you would experience sleep paralysis at that time, and full embrace the experience with peace of mind.
Prayer has also brought many people peace during scary experiences of sleep paralysis, so if you feel comfortable calling out to God or Jesus, that will only help bring you more comfort.
Preventing sleep paralysis
There are several factors that have been identified as increasing your chances of experiencing sleep paralysis. Some of these include physical fatigue, under-sleeping, and erratic sleep schedule, stress, and an overuse of stimulants. For me personally, oversleeping is what has caused most of my sleep paralysis experiences. Most of the happen when I choose to go back to sleep even when I am rested, or when I take a nap throughout the day.
So a big way to prevent paralysis from happening is to have a proper sleep schedule. Healthier sleep habits is the best thing you can do to avoid this experience. Another big way to prevent sleep paralysis is to not sleep in supine position. This is what supine position looks like
:When you sleep flat on your back in supine position, your soft palate is more likely to collapse and obstruct your breathing. This causes you to wake up out of deep sleep while your body is still in a state of atonia from REM sleep. Sleeping on your stomach (in prone position) or on your side is a good way to prevent this from happening.
Using sleep paralysis to your spiritual advantage
Sleep paralysis can be a burden for some, and an opportunity for others. Not only can you treat it as a test to see how present and calm you can become, you can also use it a chance to try to initiate an out-of-body experience or a lucid dream. Remember, some part of you remains in REM sleep while your waking mind is alert and attentive. What if this REM atonia is a sort of toolbox that enables you to use your will, intention, and visualization to leave your body and enter into new worlds?
Affirm to yourself that you are going to have an out-of-body experience, and visualize yourself hovering over top of your own body. Feel yourself starting to leave your body, and stay calm in your mind knowing that you will soon be outside of your body. Many people claim that they try to induce sleep paralysis on purpose as one of the beginning stages of astral travel.
Don’t think if yourself as a victim to a scary experience. Think of yourself as a pioneer on the edge of a world of lucid dreams and astral travel and create the experience you want for yourself. Science tells us that we are literally at the brink of the world of sleep and dreams and the world of waking life. Why not use it to your spiritual advantage and experiment a little bit?
The truth is, there is really nothing to be scared of. Nobody has ever died or been injured from being in sleep paralysis, and it usually doesn’t last for more than 30 seconds. Work with it, practice presence, clean up your sleep schedule, and if you feel like you’re up to it, use is as a launching pad for the exploration of other dimensions.
The white formation then appears to change shape several times in the course of a few seconds.

Nigel Watson author of the UFO.Investigations Manual, said: "I've seen a lot of UFO videos and they either look too good to be true or are of objects so far away and out-of-focus that you can't tell what they are.
"In this case it doesn't look much at first then the 'cloud' descends and looks very odd indeed. It could be clever CGI or a hoax, or it could be a rare form of weather phenomenon.
"Certainly it looks very 'alien' and has got conspiracy fans wondering if it is an 'invisible' stealth drone or that it is some form of translucent organic entity that lives in the sky."

A large mystery hole which spurted "big plumes of water" and sent plants and snails shooting into the air has appeared on a beach.
The coastguard at Exmouth beach cordoned off the 15ft (4.6m) by 15ft hole on Thursday afternoon.
The hole, which was "bubbling" with water, has since been filled in by the incoming tide.
East Devon District Council said it was trying to find out what caused the hole and a cordon remains at Orcombe Point.
When the coastguard team arrived they said the surrounding sand was soft and fresh holes were appearing.
Kite surf instructor James Dart said: "I looked over and there were big plumes of water coming out of the beach it was all bubbling up much like a geyser, it was probably going about a foot above the beach - it was quite tremendous sight.
"I got closer and saw plant matter coming up a few snails coming out too. It was something to spice things up in the rain."
'Bit of a mystery'
It is thought there could have been a chamber underneath the hole, about 10ft (3m) to 15ft (4.6m) deep.
Council officials said engineers would "continue to monitor the situation over the weekend and between tides".
They added: "The beach is very popular with dog walkers and bathers who are being advised to avoid the cordoned off area.
"Heavy rain yesterday may be the cause of the hole - a natural phenomenon - to have opened up, but is still a bit of a mystery."

The results are certainly tantalising. From time to time, Mars belches out clouds of methane, a gas that on Earth comes largely from life. When animals and other organisms eat food they produce methane as a waste gas. From one end or the other, that gas ultimately finds its way out into the air.
Nasa’s announcement on Tuesday that its Curiosity rover had detected wafts of methane in the Martian air was met with immediate speculation that life might be the source. It might. Communities of microbes could be living under the Martian surface and churning out the gas. Perhaps the corpses of long-extinct bugs are being heated in the Martian interior and vaporised into methane. But any number of other processes that involve nothing as spectacular as life can and do make methane too. The problem is that detecting methane alone is never enough to answer the question of whether or not we are alone.
“You need to know a lot more about what’s going on right at the source,” said Michael New, an astrobiologist at Nasa’s headquarters in Washington DC. “You need to know the context. It’s very hard to look at methane alone and say it came from life.”
Nasa made its first definitive detection of methane on Mars in 2009. Telescopes picked out spectral features of the gas, and revealed plumes of methane pouring from the northern hemisphere. The finding was evidence for a replenishing supply of the gas on the planet, because methane molecules, on average, last only 340 years in Martian air before they are broken down by sunlight.
The prospect that life forms were responsible for the 2009 methane plumes (and that humanity’s first encounter with aliens might be through a fog of their waste gases) was fiercely debated at the time. The latest results from Curiosity, based on measurements on the Martian surface, are a much-needed confirmation. They show that the gas is present at about 1 part per billion in the Martian atmosphere, or 4,000 times less than in Earth’s air.
But still the caveats remain. Methane is given off by any number of processes. Rocks bearing the mineral olivine have been found on Mars. They can react with water, also spotted on Mars, to produce methane. Another source could be icy subsurface clathrates, or molecular cages that harbour methane but can release it in bursts over time. The gas can be made in other ways too, such as reactions between cosmic dust and ultraviolet light from the sun.
Nasa’s Curiosity rover was not sent to Mars to find signs of life. Its mission was to scour the environment and work out whether it was once habitable or inhabited. In the coming months, the rover will analyse soils and rocks on the planet, to learn more about organics found in those, but a direct detection of life is almost impossible.
“In the best of all possible worlds, you would crack open a Martian rock and there would be eyes staring back at you. Or at least endolithic communities [organisms that live in the cracks of rocks such as moss and lichen], which you can find living inside rocks in the desert and in Antarctica. The rocks can provide protection, but sometimes they are using the chemistry of the rocks for energy as well. So if you cracked open a rock and saw a band of green or orange, then that could mean life. That would be great, but we can’t expect it to happen,” said New.
Nasa is already planning a follow-up mission to Curiosity that could provide the next leap forward in understanding whether Mars is or was ever inhabited. Based on the Curiosity rover, the Mars 2020 mission is part of a long-term campaign to bring Martian rocks home. “Once you have samples on Earth, you can do a lot of very deep analyses we cannot put on spacecraft,” New said. “You can look inside rocks for organic matter and if it’s there, what does it look like? Is it dots of carbon, or is it something else?”
But even bringing Mars rocks back to break open on Earth might not be enough. The Allan Hills meteorite, probably the oldest Martian meteorite ever found, was picked up in Antarctica in 1984. Since then, it has been studied extensively, but the results from years of tests are still controversial. “While most people don’t believe there’s evidence for life in there, it’s still not an open-and-shut case,” said New.
Stronger evidence might come from a joint mission under way at the European and Russian space agencies. The ExoMars rover and a Mars trace gas orbiter are due to be launched in 2018 with the express goal of searching for signatures of life past or present. Good evidence for a biological origin for methane on Mars could come from measurements of the isotopes of carbon and hydrogen that make up the methane molecules. On Earth, at least, life tends to use lighter isotopes, so more carbon-12 than carbon-13.

Mars has liquid water just below its surface, according to new measurements by Nasa’s Curiosity rover.
Until now, scientists had thought that conditions on the red planet were too cold and arid for liquid water to exist, although there were known to be deposits of ice.
Prof Andrew Coates, head of planetary science at the Mullard Space Mullard Space Science Laboratory, University College London, said: “The evidence so far is that any water would be in the form of permafrost. It’s the first time we’ve had evidence of liquid water there now.”
The latest findings suggest that Martian soil is damp with liquid brine, due to the presence of a salt that significantly lowers the freezing point of water. When mixed with calcium perchlorate liquid water can exist down to around -70C, and the salt also soaks up water vapour from the atmosphere.
New measurements from the Gale crater show that during winter nights until just after sunrise, temperatures and humidity levels are just right for liquid brine to form.
Morten Bo Madsen, a senior Mars scientist at the University of Copenhagen and a co-investigator on the Curiosity rover, said: “The soil is porous, so what we are seeing is that the water seeps down through the soil. Over time, other salts may also dissolve in the soil and now that they are liquid, they can move and precipitate elsewhere under the surface.”
Liquid water is traditionally considered an essential ingredient for life as we known it, but Mars remains hostile for other reasons, the scientists said. The latest findings are unlikely to change the view that if life ever blossomed on Mars, it probably died out more than a billion years ago.
“There are organisms on Earth, halophiles, that can survive in salty environments, but if it’s also very cold and very dry that’s a problem” said Madsen. “The radiation on Mars nails it – that environment is very hostile.”
Prof Coates agreed: “Liquid water is one of the conditions you need for life, it’s not all of them.”
On Earth, the global magnetic field protects the atmosphere from being degraded by harmful cosmic radiation from the Sun. In the past, scientists believe that Mars had a similar magnetic field and thicker atmosphere, but that the field was lost around four billion years ago.
Today, cosmic radiation penetrates at least one metre into the Martian surface and would kill even the most robust microbes known on Earth.
Surface temperatures on Mars range from around 20C at noon, at the equator, down to lows of around −153C at the poles. The presence of perchlorate salts was discovered in 2008, but until now if was not known whether temperatures and humidity would be high enough to produce liquid brine.
The latest paper, published in Nature, analyses humidity and temperature data for a full Martian year, showing that liquid brine ought to form. Instruments on-board Curiosity also measured estimates of subsurface water concentration, which suggested that water was indeed being absorbed from the air and the surface frost by the salty soil.
The water would be present in tiny quantities between the grains of soil, rather than in droplet form. “If you dug a trench you might see that the soil at the base was a bit darker,” said Madsen.
Curiosity landed on Mars in 2012 in the large crater, Gale, located just south of the equator. The giant crater is 154 kilometres in diameter and the rim of the crater is almost five kilometres high.
In the middle of the crater lies Mount Sharp, which Curiosity is currently ascending.
Observations by the Mars probe’s stereo camera have previously shown areas characteristic of old riverbed, with rounded pebbles that indicate there were flowing rivers up to one metre deep in the past.
The latest close-up images show slanting expanses of sedimentary deposits, lying one above the other. “These kind of deposits are formed when large amounts of water flow down the slopes of the crater and these streams of water meet the stagnant water in the form of a lake,” said Madsen.

Ik geloof dat de occulte elite ons al jaren lang een verhaal probeert te vertellen. Een verhaal dat alleen kan worden begrepen als je begrijpt hoe men communiceert en op wat voor manier.
Een communicatie wijze van hen is de muziekwereld met hun video clips. Velen hebben geen idee hoeveel occulte boodschappen in deze clips worden door gegeven. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is 7/11 van Beyonce.
Zij begint de clip met de dodendans en eindigt het nummer met de opmerking dat ze beter is voorbereid op wat gaat komen dan wij. Tevens zingt ze op een gegeven moment seven twice, seven twice. Oftewel 7-7.
Een maand later komt Ariane Grande met een nummer, One last time, en in deze clip zien we dat een meteoriet de aarde treft.
Ook deze clip zit weer vol met occulte boodschappen.
Wat mij echter nog het meest verbaasd is dat deze twee illuminatie hoeren sindsdien geen nieuw nummer meer hebben uitgebracht. Deze twee personen genereren enorme hoeveelheden geld voor hun bazen en ineens brengen ze geen nieuwe nummers meer uit. Wat is er loos?
Met deze feiten ben ik eens aan de slag gegaan op het internet en wat schets mijn verbazing?
Meerdere mensen geven een waarschuwing uit voor 7 juli 2015, 7-7-2015. Wat blijkt nu? De NASA geeft aan dat op 7 juli een asteroïde de aarde zal passeren en ze hebben deze een inslagcode gegeven van 7.
Negen is het hoogst en staat voor 100% kans op een inslag, 0 is het laagst, dus 7 geeft een redelijke kans op impact.
Echter dat is nog niet alles, er komen namelijk vele voorspellingen en occulte boodschappen samen,allemaal afzonderlijk van elkaar verteld.
De puzzelstukjes komen op hun plaats.
Ik heb al vaker aan gegeven dat het net lijkt alsof de grote supermachten zich aan het positioneren zijn.
Alles wordt maar uitgesteld, Griekenland, onze eigen minderheidsregering, manipuleren van het financieel stelsel en ga maar door.
New York zal worden getroffen door een enorme vloedgolf wat ook is aangegeven op het 50 dollar biljet.
Operatie Jade Helm, de honderdduizenden body bags die naar Haïti zijn gebracht. De ondergang van Amerika wat al zo vaak op een spirituele manier is aangegeven.
Denk hierbij aan de Amerikaanse vlag die viel op de olympische spelen en de vijfde ring (staat voor het continent Amerika) die zowel bij de opening als wel de afsluiting niet wou aansluiten.
Waarom wilde Amerika een contract met Zuid Afrika afsluiten om miljoenen Amerikanen op te vangen bij een eventuele natuurramp.
Dit event zal de trigger zijn voor de financiële ineenstorting.
Let bij de volgende clip op de lichaamstaal en de diepe zucht van Kerry, hij weet wat er gaat gebeuren en straalt nederigheid en schuld uit. En waar is deze man eigenlijk gebleven na zijn fietsongeluk?

Uiteraard hoop ik dat het allemaal onzin zal zijn wat ik hier heb aangegeven.
De inslag zal voor ons niet zo'n ramp zijn maar de aftermath wel.
Tot zover het verhaal en waarschuwing van de lezer. In zijn bericht draait veel om het magische getal 7. Een getal dat je ook weer tegenkomt bij Christine Lagarde van het IMF en de rampzalige vlucht MH17 die bijna een jaar geleden uit de lucht werd geschoten.
Zoals wij eerder hebben bericht hield het hoofd van het IMF (Internationaal Monetair Fonds), Christine Lagarde, begin dit jaar een merkwaardige toespraak waarin zij bleef hameren op de magische krachten van het getal 7.
In een andere toespraak bleef zij het accent leggen op het feit de wereld een “reset” nodig heeft om uit de huidige economische problemen te komen.
“Enkele weken geleden in een interview noemde zij het woord “reset” zelfs tien keer in een tijdsbestek van drie minuten. Alsof ze hoe dan ook duidelijk wil maken dat er iets gaat gebeuren”.
Dit is door velen geïnterpreteerd als een financiële reset, uiteraard omdat zij hoofd van het IMF is, maar zoals wij schreven in maart:
"In welke vorm en hoedanigheid een dergelijke reset zou moeten plaatsvinden is natuurlijk nog maar de vraag.
Daarmee komen we weer terug bij het getal 7, het magische getal zoals Christine Lagarde zei.
In het satanisme is zeven een heilig getal. Men gelooft dat de zeven over alle aspecten van het universum regeert, van het lichaam van de mens tot de planeten in het universum en van alle spirituele zaken.
De Boeing 777 van Malysia Airlines werd neergeschoten op 17 juli van de 7e maand in een jaar dat opgeteld weer uitkomt op 7 (2 plus o plus 1 plus 4 is 7). Die dag was het precies 17 jaar geleden dat deze Boeing op de 17e dag van de 7e maand voor het eerst het luchtruim koos.
De bomaanslagen in de Londense metro op 7-7-2005 vonden dan ook niet voor niets plaats op die datum. Op 7 juli van de 7e maand in een jaar dat opgeteld weer op 7 uitkomt werd een brute slachtpartij in scene gezet in het centrum van Londen.
“Binnen een half uur deden drie ontploffingen zich voor in de metro en een half uur later één aan boord van een bus. Het aantal doden bedroeg 56, naar schatting waren er 700 gewonden, waarvan 22 ernstig gewond”.
Het is ook niet de eerste keer dat een vliegtuig met passagiers wordt geofferd aan satan.
“TWA Flight 800 (TW800, TWA800) was een verkeersvlucht van Amerika John F. Kennedy International Airport (New York) naar Frankrijk Charles de Gaulle International Airport (Parijs) uitgevoerd door Trans World Airlines.
Op 17 juli 1996 ontplofte het vliegtuig, een Boeing 747-131, registratie N93119, in volle vlucht en stortte in de zee ongeveer 32 kilometer zuidoost van New York. Van de 230 personen aan boord overleefde niemand de crash”.
Ook dit gebeurde op de 17e dag van de 7e maand in een jaar dat opgeteld eindigt met 7 met een Boeing 747. In de officiële versie is kortsluiting de oorzaak, de werkelijk ligt ook hier weer helemaal anders.

After a strange sound, and weird flying objects, the market town of Warminster has been the talk of the country for many years. The reports of the UFO, also known as “The Warminster Thing”, came from people who saw the objects and heard strange sounds in the night sky in 1965. Fifty years after ‘the Warminster Thing,’ an important conference event takes place in the town. By a “secret” artist, the mural was organised by the Warminster Information Centre, which implies that such “utterly unique event” is never forgotten.
The Significance of 50th Anniversary
Held over the August Bank Holiday, the 50th anniversary is a one-day event. It commemorates the significance of 50 years after the town received extreme criticisms and curiosities. In fact, Warminster has remained as the national capital of all UFO throughout the 1960s and 70s. Furthermore, it also enjoyed a resurgence with the crop circle phenomenon between 1980s and 90s. As to who did the painting, she said it’s a secret, but since the art is still not finished, the curious might catch him in action.
Photos of Warminster’s “flying saucers” appeared in local and national newspapers at the time, giving much publicity. After thousands of people have visited Warminster to see UFOs, a public meeting was held over the bank holiday in 1965.

To truly grasp what we’re doing to the planet, you need to understand this gigantic measurement

There’s been a lot of news lately about the losses of ice from the planet’s two gigantic ice sheets, Greenland and Antarctica. And not surprisingly, some people have found it very stunning — simply because the volumes of ice involved sound so huge.
For instance, after I wrote about a new study showing a disturbing increase in ice loss from one relatively small part of the Antarctic ice sheet, I saw the following tweet from Moby — yes, that Moby:

Actually, that’s just the losses for one region of Antarctica, the Southern Antarctic Peninsula. Total losses are much larger. But the tweet — and the general magnitude of the kinds of changes that we’re seeing — got me thinking. It can be hard to comprehend the scale of these events, so it would be helpful to break it down into more comprehensible pieces.
Scientists often measure the loss of ice from the planet’s two gigantic ice sheets, Greenland and Antarctica, in a particular unit called a “gigaton,” which is sometimes also spelled “gigatonne.” Either way, it’s not something you encounter in your ordinary life, because it’s incredibly “giga-ntic” — the kind of unit that planets depend on.
In the International System of Units, the prefix “giga” means 109, or one billion (1,000,000,000). Hence terms like “gigawatt”or “gigahertz.” Thus, a gigaton is equivalent to a billion metric tons.
A male African elephant might weigh, at most, 6.8 metric tons, according to the San Diego Zoo. So a gigaton is well over a hundred million African elephants. As for sea life, the blue whale can weigh as much as 146 metric tons, according to NOAA. So a gigaton is more than 6 million blue whales.
Or for another analogy, consider how Meredith Nettles of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University recently described a gigaton-sized piece of ice to me:
“If you took the whole National Mall, and covered it up with ice, to a height about four times as high as the [Washington] monument,” says Nettles, you’d have about a gigaton of ice. “All the way down from the Capitol steps to the Lincoln Memorial.”
With this in mind, let’s now look at how much ice Antarctica is losing, before moving on to the other sources of major ice loss, like Greenland.
A recent scientific paper estimated the total annual loss for Antarctica at 159 gigatons (plus or minus 48 gigatons, since these measurements are subject to considerable uncertainty). Other scientific estimates vary — Jonathan Bamber, an Antarctic expert at the University of Bristol, recently gave me a lower estimate — 130 gigatons per year. Yet another, even lower recent estimate is 92 gigatons per year. Whatever the exact number, Antarctica is clearly losing billions of African elephants worth of ice each year.
Climate change doubters, faced with such numbers, sometimes like to point out that East Antarctica is gaining some ice — but there is still a net loss of ice to the ocean because of massive losses in West Antarctica, the most vulnerable part of the Antarctic continent. And it’s not as if we should be exactly content about the status of East Antarctica, either. The gigantic Totten Glacier of East Antarctica is losing 70 gigatons of ice per year, “enough to fill Sydney Harbour every two and a half days,” as one scientist with the Australian Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Center puts it.
“It is common to see broad stroke comparisons between East and West Antarctica for the sake of convenience, however, doing so risks diminishing the fact that there is net mass loss occurring in a large area of East Antarctica, as well,” Jamin Greenbaum, lead author of a recent study of Totten Glacier, told me by email. “It is well established that the region encompassing the Aurora Subglacial Basin and Totten Glacier is losing mass and contributing to sea level at a rate that is large compared to variability in snowfall indicating that the losses are due to processes beyond snowfall (e.g. enhanced ocean melting).”
Moreover, the rate of ice loss from Antarctica has been increasing, and scientists keep finding new sources.
So what does it all mean? It takes 360 gigatons of ice to raise the global sea level 1 millimeter, Bamber told me. So right now, Antarctica is doing that about once every three years. Globally, though, sea level is going up at an increasing rate of 2.6 to 2.9 millimeters per year, according to the latest research, because Antarctica isn’t the only contributor.
The gigantic Greenland ice sheet, which is facing rapidly rising Arctic temperatures, is also contributing, and at least for now, appears to be throwing off much more ice than Antarctica. A recent study put the loss at 378 gigatons per year for the years between 2009 and 2012. That’s a millimeter per year right there. Indeed, recent research suggests that some glacial iceberg calvings — from, say, Greenland’s Helheim Glacier — can be as large as a gigaton at a single time.
Glaciers around the world are also contributing — and at the scale of many gigatons. Indeed, recent research suggests that the glaciers of Alaska alone are now contributing 75 gigatons per year, which is very large number, considering that they only constitute about 11 percent of the world’s glaciers.
Warm ocean water also expands, so in addition to ice loss, the oceans are also growing in volume due to their temperature. And for those who don’t think 2 or 3 millimeters per year of ocean rise is a big deal — the real concern, with both Greenland and Antarctica (and also Alaska), is that these rates are increasing.
And why might that be happening?
It’s because of the 34 gigatons annually of carbon dioxide that humanity is currently putting in the atmosphere. In 2013, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that to have a good chance of keeping global warming under 2 degrees Celsisus above pre-industrial times — a widely embraced international goal — humanity had, as of the year 2011, only about 1000 gigatons of CO2 left that it could emit. Divide 1000 by 34 and you get maybe 3 decades more of emissions at current levels. And that assumes that emissions merely stay constant, rather than rising along with rising economic growth.
When it comes to our gigatons of carbon dioxide emitted each year, NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory has done some fascinating math (which starts with a relatively simple conversion of gigatons of carbon dioxide into gigatons of carbon):
In 2010 about 9 Giga-tons of Carbon (GtC) were emitted from burning fossil fuels as 33 Giga-tons of CO2 gas.
How much is 9 Giga-ton? 9 billion tons or 9,000,000,000,000,000 grams, or 19,800,000,000,000 pounds.
Can you imagine…9 Giga-tons is the weight of about 132 billion people. The amount of carbon we are putting into the atmosphere each year is equal to 20 times the weight of the current world population.
All of which further underscores that the gigaton is the unit that really explains to you how we’re altering the planet — changing its atmosphere, and changing its oceans, at a scale that’s hard for humans to conceive of. Net gigatons of CO2 are going into the atmosphere and net gigatons of H2O are going into the ocean. And if you wanted to reshape a planet, it’s hard to think of a better recipe than that.
Trying to convince the skeptics and the doubters that the UFO phenomenon is one of all-too-real proportions is never an easy task. Most of the time I don’t even bother. After all, it’s their loss, not mine, if they choose to remain ignorant. That’s to say, ignorant in terms of being uniformed, and ignorant as in being jerks for refusing to acknowledge the value of the data.
On those occasions when I can be bothered to debate the skeptics on the matter of UFOs, I often make use of government, intelligence, and military files to make my point. The reason why is simple: many official records on unidentified flying objects – and particularly those from the 1940s and 1950s – are of excellent caliber.
A perfect example, is a collection of U.S. Air Force documents that detail an astonishing wave of UFO activity that occurred in early 1958. They are files declassified under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act, but which have not generally received the positive commentary they deserve.
The mystery began on the night of March 9, 1958. The location: a now-closed U.S. Army installation on the Panama Canal Zone called Fort Clayton. It was around 8:00 p.m. when a UFO was tracked, by anti-aircraft personnel, in the Canal Zone area. Further blips soon appeared on the screen. Clearly something unusual was afoot.
It turns out that Fort Clayton was not the only base monitoring unusual aerial activity. Radar staff at Fort Amador, Flamenco Island were also tracking something airborne and unknown. In fact, they were tracking two UFOs – both of which maintained a circular pattern above a nearby installation, Fort Kobbe. Their heights, however, fluctuated between 2,000 and 10,000 feet. It was at this time that staff at Taboga Island’s Track Radar Unit confirmed they were keeping a careful watch on certain unknowns, too.
Shortly before midnight, personnel at Fort Amador chose to take a new and novel approach to try and identify the UFOs: they bathed them with powerful, ground-based searchlights. The response was incredible: in no more than a handful of seconds the UFOs headed skywards from 2,000 to 10,000 feet.
Official records on this particularly eye-opening development state: “…this was such a rapid movement that the Track Radar, which was locked on target, broke the Track Lock and was unable to keep up with ascent of the objects. As Track Radar can only be locked on a solid object, which was done in the case of the two unidentified flying objects, it was assumed that the objects were solid.”
This strange and bizarre activity continued into the early hours of March 10 – something which saw UFOs hovering and accelerating to speeds around 1,000 miles per hour, and unknown objects tracked on radar. Later that same day, UFOs were monitored clearly reacting to the presence of aircraft dispatched to intercept them. The files also talk of a UFO report from the captain of a Pan American Airlines DC-6 aircraft that was described as being bigger than the plane and which was headed in a southerly direction.
Of course, none of this gives us any real indication of what the UFOs were. However, the reference to objects hovering high in the sky, definitive unknowns accelerating to speeds of around 1,000 m.p.h, and of radar systems that were “unable to keep up with ascent of the objects,” which were “assumed” to be “solid,” collectively suggest vehicles of highly advanced natures were in evidence in the Canal Zone in March 1958. And, of course, let’s not forget that the UFOs responded, in amazing fashion, to being lit up by searchlights.

So, the next time a smug skeptic tells you UFOs don’t exist, direct them to the many and varied files that have surfaced under Freedom of Information legislation. It’s an ideal way to shut them up.

ALIEN ABDUCTION ~ FACT OR FICTION? - PART I
If the figures are to be believed, up to 4 million people have been abducted by aliens in the US, with many millions more captured world wide. Although the existence of human hungry aliens might be impossible to disprove per se, it is unlikely that extra-terrestrials could manage such mass kidnappings without being commonly noticed. This suggests that there are many people who falsely believe they have been seized by creatures from outer-space, perhaps after experiencing unusual and bizarre phenomena. The purpose of this article is to communicate some of the recent research in psychology and neuroscience that gives us some clues as to how and why these experiences and beliefs occur.
Some of the many thousands of people who claim to have been abducted are likely to be fortune seekers, bar-room braggers, publicity hounds and maybe even some genuine abductees. Yet with the high numbers of people reporting abductions, many of the people who believe they have been captured will likely have been mistaken.
The History of Abductions
Yes there are signs of crafts being seen in the sky and alien contact in ancient text, but without knowledge as to what these hieroglyphs, paintings etc actually symbolize or mean we will stay away from ancient astronaut theories and look at recorded history. In the November 27, 1896 edition of the Stockton, California Daily Mail, Colonel H. G. Shaw claimed he and a friend were harassed by three tall, slender humanoids whose bodies were covered with a fine, downy hair who tried to kidnap the pair.
Colonel H. G. Shaw, along with his friend Camille Spooner, had a close encounter with previously unknown entities.
Shaw was in charge of putting together an exhibition to be displayed at a Fair in Fresno.
Shaw and friend were traveling by horse and carriage in route to Stockton, when their horse froze with fright.
To the two men’s shock, they saw the cause of the horse’s actions; three tall alien looking beings with small delicate hands at the end of their spindly arms stood by the road. They had no hair on their heads, yet a soft, light fuzz over their bodies. Large eyes made their small mouths and ears appear even smaller.
The two eyewitnesses would later tell authorities that the beings had a “strange” type of beauty to them.
All of the beings carried with them a bag of some kind with a hose which they often stuck in their mouths, obviously to breath with. Although there was still some daytime left, the beings also carried with them egg-shaped lamps which glowed. This glow would later illuminate a waiting spaceship.
As the men watched the aliens, the beings were communicating with each other by a type of chant, as no English words were heard by Shaw and Spooner. The men would tell authorities that the aliens made an attempt to abduct them, but that the large difference in mass between the human and alien body thwarted the effort.
Soon, the three alien beings made a move toward a nearby bridge. Using their other worldly lamps, the aliens lighted up the bridge, showing a nearby craft. The UFO was of a cigar shape, and it hovered quietly over the water.
The beings seemed to be almost lighter than air as they moved toward their craft. It seemed that the aliens would almost leave the ground as they walked on the earth.
The beings entered the hovering cigar UFO in a most unconventional way also. They sprung up from the ground and above their craft, and then floated down into the craft through an unseen entry. Soon, the object flew away.
Then in the 1940s and ’50s.
The Space Age was upon us, and sci-fi literature was soaring in popularity with human-alien encounters a recurring theme. In July 1946, “Planet Comics” ran a strip in which aliens used a luminous tractor beam to kidnap a voluptuous female earthling, whom they called Specimen 9. They tell her the abduction is part of “Project Survival,” and as they steer their spaceship toward what looks like Saturn, the leader remarks, “Now home. And if you find our methods ruthless, Specimen 9, it is because our needs are desperate.”
Likewise, in 1954, a comic strip appearing in the British tabloid The Daily Express detailed the alien abduction of a Royal Air Force pilot. Dozens of other abduction stories graced the pages of sci-fi novels and comic books.
June 24, 1947 The Kenneth Arnold Incident
Kenneth Arnold, a businessman, was flying his private plane near Mount Rainier in Washington State when he saw nine shining discs moving against the background of the mountain. He estimated their speed as about 1,000 mph. He said that they swerved in and out of the peaks of the Cascade Mountains with “flipping, erratic movements.” He later told a reporter that the objects moved as a saucer would “if you skipped it across the water.” The next day the story appeared in newspapers all over the nation, calling the strange objects “flying saucers.” Hundreds of people soon began reporting sightings of flying saucers, and a US Air Force investigation was initiated; on 4 July, ten days after the sighting, the US Air Force announced confidently that Arnold had been “hallucinating.”
1953 Hunrath and Wilkinson Disappearance
The 1950s was a time of major UFO activity but it was also a time in UFO history known by a group of persons known as “UFO contactees”. These individuals claimed to have made contact with the alien occupants of the flying saucers. For some these contacts were face to face, for others the communications were telepathic. Some claimed to have been given rides on alien spacecraft. Most of the mainstream UFO organizations of the time gave little credence to the contactees, and believed most to be hoaxers or people suffering from delusions. One of the most famous contactees was George Adamski.
George Adamski was born in Poland and immigrated to the US at a young age. By the 1930s, he was living in California as a sort of guru practicing “Universal Progressive Christianity”. He set up a small observatory at a restaurant “Palomar Gardens” below the famous Mount Palomar Observatory. By the early 1950s, Adamski was taking photographs of flying saucers with his telescope and writing science fiction and articles about the occult. On November 20, 1952, Adamski reportedly met an angelic looking man named Orthon who emerged from a landed flying saucer, claiming to be from Venus. During this encounter at the base of the Coxcomb Mountains, not far from Desert Center, California, Adamski was accompanied by six people who were told by Adamski to stay behind while he made the contact with Orthon.
After this encounter, Adamski attracted a small group of followers. One of these was Karl Hunrath, a electrical engineer, who had invented “Bosco” a device which was intended to bring down flying saucers. After a dispute with Adamski, Hunrath moved away from Palomar Gardens and rented an apartment in Los Angeles with Jerrold Baker, a handyman at Palomar Gardens who had also had a falling out with Adamski.
Karl Hunrath was soon working as a radio technician. In June 1953, a old friend of Hunrath’s from Racine, Wisconsin, Wilbur J. Wilkinson, arrived in Los Angeles with his wife and three children. Wilkinson, a co-inventor of Bosco, had left his job as a foreman at an electrical appliance plant, to join Hunrath in his efforts to see a flying saucer and meet an alien.
The two men developed an interest in channeling aliens, meeting other contactees and using psychic techniques and mechanical contractions to communicate with the “Maserians”, beings who allegedly lived on the moon.
On or about November 10, 1953, Karl Hunrath made phone calls to several associates telling them that some people had left Earth for other planets and that no one should be surprised if this might happen to him. On November 11, 1953, Hunrath and Wilkinson rented a small plane at Gardina County Airport near Los Angeles. With three hours of fuel, one hour paid rental, and no filed flight plan, Hunrath flew off with his passenger Wilkinson with the likely intent to meet a grounded saucer which they apparently presumed would take them to Maser, Venus or some other off-Earth populated celestial body.
Apparently to this day, no trace of the aircraft or the two men has been found. Most people presume that Hunrath, an inexperienced pilot, probably crashed somewhere in the mountainous terrain east of Los Angeles. If this is so, the aircraft wreckage may be out there still.
Wilbur J Wilkinson, provided this script, claiming it was from a race using the moon as a way-station for its people from the planet Maser.
NOTE:Adamski was quoted as saying “I made enough wine for all of Southern California…I was making a fortune!” However, the end of Prohibition also marked the decline of his profitable wine-making business, and Adamski later told two friends that’s when he “had to get into this [flying] saucer crap.
Antonio Villas Boas Abduction Case
In 1957, a Brazilian writer named João Martins penned the first installment of a series titled “Flying Saucers’ Terrible Mission” for the magazine O Cruzeiro. “There he describes cases of people in isolated places attacked by small alien beings”.
Martins also asked his readers to write him with their own experiences. Among hundreds of responses, he selected one of a young farmer from Minas Gerais with whom he exchanged several letters.
The next year, Martins paid for the 23-year-old farmer to come to Rio de Janeiro, where he was examined by Dr. Olavo Fontes. The farmer’s name was Antonio Villas Boas, and he claimed to have been abducted by aliens one day after reading Martin’s article?
The story got out. Walter Buhler of the Brazilian ufology group SBEDV, and a follower of the self-described alien contactee George Adamski, learned about Vilas Boas’ story, and in 1962, Buhler visited the young farmer in his hometown. The SBEDV subsequently published a report on the Villas Boas case in English, and the account aligned with Adamski’s earlier descriptions of aliens and their spaceships. In January 1965, an international journal called the Flying Saucer Review reproduced Buhler’s report worldwide.
Villas Boas was working the fields at night to avoid the scorching temperatures of the day, when he saw the red light of a spaceship; it slowly approached him and landed nearby in a field. Villas Boas tried to escape but was captured by small humanoid creatures, which dragged him into their craft.
The aliens conducted a series of experiments on their captive, including taking samples of his body tissue, exposing him to a gas that made him violently ill, and compelling him to have sexual intercourse with a female alien, who was, Villas Boas said, very attractive, with blonde hair and blue, cat-like eyes.
A few details hint that the story was fabricated or imagined. “If you read Villas Boas’ account you may notice the advanced aliens nonetheless used rope ladders. Moreover, “Villas Boas’ original sketch of the alien spaceship, with three legs, looks remarkably like the drawings of Sputnik-1, often depicted with three of its four antennas showing. The Sputnik surely was the talk of the time in 1957 when Villas Boas was supposedly abducted — or imagined his story.”

The Betty and Barney Hill Case
Widespread publicity was generated by the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case of 1961, culminating in a made-for-television film broadcast in 1975 (starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons) dramatizing the events. The Hill incident was probably the prototypical abduction case and was perhaps the first in which the claimant described beings that later became widely known as the Greys and in which the beings were said to explicitly identify an extraterrestrial origin.
The Hills were an interracial couple in the 1960s, and the exhibit discusses Barney Hill’s civil rights activism. However, the couple is best known for giving the first reported incident of an alleged alien abduction in America.
Today, due to television shows and films, the scenario is familiar: UFOs chase down terrified witnesses on a desolate road and take them onto the spaceship to ask them questions or probe them in awkward places.
It began one night when Barney and Betty Hill claimed they were pursued by a glowing UFO through parts of New Hampshire. Betty soon had vivid nightmares (which she interpreted as fragmented memories) about the incident, and the couple came to believe that they had been abducted by the UFO’s occupants, who then erased their memories. The couple sought the help of a psychiatrist, and under hypnosis both Hills soon reported full-blown, detailed “repressed memories” of their abduction.
The Barney and Betty Hill story was celebrated as the most important UFO-related event in the 1960s, and spun into a media sensation. Their experiences became fodder for many magazine articles, books, and a made-for-TV film called “The UFO Incident.” Betty became a UFO celebrity, giving media appearances and writing a book about her story.
As the years passed, however, the story lost its gloss and most realize it to be a hoax.
No other witnesses could support their account, parts of it were implausible, and the validity of “repressed memories” was called into question. Betty Hill’s own reported experiences cast doubt on her credibility. In the decades since her original 1961 experience with her husband Barney, Betty claimed not a few, nor dozens, but hundreds of UFO sightings.
Though UFO investigators desperately wanted to believe her, that became more difficult. One UFO researcher who worked with Betty noted that she was “unable to distinguish between a landed UFO and a streetlight.” In other words, she saw UFOs where none existed. “ Even many UFO believers reluctantly admit that much of Betty Hill’s experiences and stories cannot be true and instead are likely imaginative fantasies of a sincere but confused woman. With little or no corroborating evidence and no eyewitnesses to support their remarkable story, the Barney and Betty Hill abduction case is, as often happens, inconclusive at best and a complete fabrication at worst.
If the Witnesses are not hoaxers or scammers then what else explains these experiences?
Sleep paralysis Awareness during sleep paralysis is a common explanation for this confusion, most probably as abduction experiences and conscious sleep paralysis attacks often share many of the same features, such as waking whilst unable to move, feelings of fear, dread or unease and a feeling of pressure on the body. Normal sleep paralysis happens when the body enters the REM stage of the sleep cycle. The brain stem blocks movement signals that would normally travel from the brain to the muscles, probably to stop us carrying out the movements we dream about doing. The frightening aspect of this occurs when a sleeper awakens, becomes conscious, but who’s movement control is not reinstated by the brain. This state can also be accompanied by what are known as ‘hypnopompic’ hallucinations which occur naturally to many people whilst awakening. These hallucinations can take the form of voices, lights, figures or any number of strange bodily sensations. It is little wonder that when combined with fearful paralysis such uncanny experiences might be interpreted as alien in origin.
Temporal lobe disturbance Another commonly cited source of internal spookiness are the temporal lobes of the brain. Electrical stimulation of the surface of the temporal lobes (usually done on an awake patient when they are undergoing brain surgery) can produce unusual auditory sensations. Similarly, Michael Persinger, a Canadian scientist, has produced strange sensations in his research participants by using magnets to influence temporal lobe function from outside the skull. Such sensations have included feelings of a ‘presence’, disorientation and fear. It would seem unlikely that a possible abductee would fail to notice if someone placed large magnets near his or her head (or even that they were subject to brain surgery !) before the ‘abduction’ experience. However, similar effects can be caused by epileptic or similar seizures in the temporal lobes. Many epilepsy sufferers who have temporal lobe seizures report mystical experiences, missing time, out of body feelings or even strange smells or ‘atmospheres’ prior to, during or after a seizure. It must be remembered that not all forms of epilepsy cause dramatic shaking of the body, and many simply result in brief lapses of consciousness or experiences such as those noted above. This leads us to wonder whether disturbances in the temporal lobes may also contribute to experiences which some people may interpret as an alien abduction.
Mental illness Surprisingly, overt mental illness may be one of the least likely explanations for abduction experiences. Research has previously suggested that alien contactees are no more likely to show signs of mental illness than the general population, a finding which has been backed up by several other studies. However, many features once thought present only in mental illness have now been discovered to be held by much of the population. If we look at the healthy population as a whole, these features seem to exist on a continuum with some people reporting anomalous thoughts and feelings or having certain traits more than others. In this vein, it seems people who report themselves as abductees are more likely to endorse unusual experiences, be creative and imaginative, have depressive ideas, be suspicious, have dissociative tendencies and to have suffered childhood trauma. So whilst it seems unlikely that the bizarre experiences reported by most ‘abductees’ stem from severe mental illness (which can produce equally bizarre and seemingly real experiences) it is certainly the case that this group has characteristics that differentiate them from the general population. It is possible that these dispositions may increase the tendency for them to explain an anomalous experience in terms of alien contact.
Memory distortion Our memories are often infuriatingly fallible, leading us to forget information we want to remember, remember information we’d rather forget, or often confidently recall something that later turns out to be inaccurate. A recent study has investigated memory distortions in people claiming to have been subject to alien capture. Participants in the study were read several lists of similarly themed words then given tests of recall and recognition. The results of the study indicated that ‘abductees’ were able to remember words from the original list as well as ‘non-abductees’, but tended to show a higher rate of recall and recognition for words that were never actually read out in the first place. This suggests that the ‘abductees’ are more likely to misidentify the source of memories, perhaps suggesting that some elements of their abduction experience may have been culled from other sources such as the media or their own imagination.
This effect may also work retrospectively, allowing people to co-opt previous memories to support an abduction account. An early memory study conducted by Frederic Bartlett demonstrated that we reconstruct memories as they are recalled to create a coherent story. This reconstruction takes place using cultural references that give us a frame on which to hang the various remembered experiences. The alien abduction experience is well known to almost everyone, due to the popularity of shows such as the X-Files, and famous cases which have hit the headlines. This may give some people a cultural framework on which they can hang memories from a bizarre, unusual or traumatic experience. Unfortunately it is even the case that naïve or even unscrupulous therapists may push alien abduction as a explanation for a bizarre experience that a client may have undergone. Many examples of therapists willing to use hypnotic regression, a technique noted for its tendency to cause false recall, to recover abduction experiences can be found on the internet. Perhaps giving an off-the-shelf explanation for strange experiences that the brain is quite capable of generating, without the need for extra-terrestrial intervention.
Conclusion It would certainly be foolish to discount the possibility of anything unlikely, simply because of its improbability. Yet we must also remember that we can often find explanations for anomalous experience within ourselves. As the old doctor’s adage goes ‘When you hear hoof beats, start by thinking horses not zebras’. This would seem to work as well for zebras as it does for visitors from outer-space.
