This UFO was over the a small town with a population of 10,235, so its no wonder there wasn't more videos of it. I enlarged this UFO in each of the three screenshots I took, and found something unusual. Each close up I made has an aura around it, which shows the hole in the middle is smaller that it looks and the sides are much farther out than we can see. This UFO is using some kind of tech to make itself look smaller than it is. This is proof that it is an actual UFO. Do you remember the old stories about UFOs in photos looking fuzzy, due to their propulsion systems? There you go.

UFO Witnesses Share The Same UFO Sighting Decades Later

North Central Ohio is very curious about UFO stories. News Journal received a lot of calls after publishing a story on Sunday about a well-known UFO incident that happened on October 18, 1973, in the Mansfield area. An investigator wants to talk to the witnesses about what happened that night.

A handful of present and past residents contacted the newspaper and Mutual UFO Network investigator Terry Hamilton.

No one could identify the aerial object that fall day over four decades ago. But many remember the event vividly because it was very strange to them.

Brian Stevens, who was 13 at that time, said he saw an orange ball hovering and reflecting the light of the setting sun. Steven was looking at Westbrook Country Club when he saw the strange floating object.

Later that night, Glenn Stout was taking a break from his job at Mansfield Tire. He was on the back dock standing with some coworkers when he saw an unusual light travelling toward and almost colliding with a helicopter above the Westbrook Country Club area.

After that sighting, he saw a news story about a UFO that interfered with the flight path of an Army Reserve helicopter above Mansfield. He was sure the news was talking about the same incident he had witnessed. On the same month, he claimed to have received surprisingly low bill amounting $4 only. He wondered whether the object had something to do with it.

Judith Hamm was outside a home earlier in the day near Pavonia when she noticed a plane flying toward another plane, but the object veered away and vanished. Hamm said she nearly screamed because she thought a collision was coming.

Hamm said that she thought that the object was a military aircraft at first but realized it wasn’t because it moved faster than any plane and performed a strange manoeuvre.

Latest Eerie UFO Sightings

Although technically a UFO refers to any unidentified flying objects, most people connect the term as synonymous with alien space vehicle. An unidentified flying object is a kind of anomaly inside sky that is not acknowledgeable to the observer. Although a small proportion stays unexplained, nearly all sightings can be a natural phenomenon or even man-made objects. On the other side, there are governmental and military personnel claiming that the sightings people are experiencing are just technological advancements tested in secrecy.

In a creepy footage recorded by Carole Thorpe, there was a fireball hovering over a lake in the night sky. The balls appear to be orange in the shade at an unusual speed. Are they aliens? Alternatively, a sunlight reflecting a satellite? In every investigation, you need to critically and thoroughly examine the actual evidence. Bear in mind that the more evidence that is being confirmed as unreliable, the greater the doubt as to its validity.

According to Carole Thorpe, the strange object is moving in a purposeful line beginning from the South up to North. Based on the footage, the object was shaking, and the lights were flickering intermittently. The footage was being recorded in the Grayslake Village, Illinois at 9 pm. According to the people surrounding her, there were numerous reports from different witnesses about the mysterious flying object that night. Of course, it could not be a lantern or a meteor as they have entirely different looks.  There was also no sound.

Regardless of what people believe, mysterious sightings are still regular occurrences. In fact,  such sightings being caught on the video have been reported in mainstream media outlets across the globe. Whatever your beliefs are, it is only a matter of time before irrefutable evidence of unidentified flying objects is being proven. Are you ready?

A crashed UFO discovered in Antarctica?

In the distant past, Antarctica is believed to have been a thriving content very different from what we see today. Some even believe, that ancient civilizations might have prospered on this once great continent, which is today, hidden beneath layers of ice and snow. Today, Antarctica is a nearly inhospitable place on Earth and everything that might have existed in the distant past on Antarctica lies hidden beneath the snow. There are countless legends that are connected with Antarctica, some of them speak about incredible pyramids hidden across the harsh landscape, secret underground facilities where the impossible comes to life and some even believe that somewhere, on Antarctica, lies the entrance to the mythical land of "Shangri-La", a paradise located in the interior of the Earth. UFO stories aren't something uncommon when it comes to Antarctica, and in this article, we discuss a possible UFO crash site that has been found with the help of Google Earth. 

 

If you really believe that all of this are just legends and fairytales you should probably take a moment and use Google Earth and visit Antarctica for yourself. All of a sudden science fiction stories come a step closer to reality, as you will find many unexplained things which are easily identifiable on the white surface. 

 

Russian researcher Valentin Degterev used google Earth and might have found an actual UFO crash-site on Antarctica. As Degterev was looking at Antarctica's landscape he came across a huge unidentified object half buried in the snow.  Degterev came across this mysterious object a couple of years ago, but according to Degterev, this object crashed on Earth in the distant past, possibly millions of years ago. After publishing the images of the alleged UFO on social media, the news went viral all over the world.

 

Degterev stated: "I think it's a huge flying disc-shaped machine buried in the frozen ice, I found the mysterious object using Google Earth while looking at Antarctica. Amid the endless ice desert, it is a genuine UFO in its most classic form."

 

The Russian "researcher" also disclosed the coordinates where he had found the object so that anyone can check it out and form their opinion. Here are the coordinates: 80 ° 34'08.4 "S 30 ° 05'19.3" W. According to Degterev the UFO is about 20 meters wide and 70 meters long, ruling out the possibility that it was a natural formation like a cliff or a large crack, and could not be a polar station, a crashed plane, or a lost boat.

 

 

Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, said: ‘It’s hard to tell if this a “classic” saucer sticking out of the ice, or whether it is a break in the ice.

‘Antarctica has a long tradition of being the resting place of crashed saucers or a base for their operations.’ 

 

Degterev went further and stated that the mysterious object definitely had a metallic body and was not made of rock or stone. But Andrew Fleming, a researcher at the British Antarctic Survey told the Daily Mail Online that the object was clearly a large crack in the floor of Antarctica. "Its a crevasse. A crevasse is a lot of ice formed by differential movement of the ice,' he said.

'They can be tens of metres deep. It's one large slot, nothing unusual, but they are spectacular. It's certainly not a UFO, though.'

So we decided to ask sci-fi authors, science experts, and ET buffs what they think extraterrestrials really would look like.

"Look at the incredible diversity of biotypes here on Earth, all of which evolved under the same planetary environment. I don't believe an alien species from an entirely different biochemical foundation would happen to turn out with two arms, two legs, two eyes, ears, nostrils . . . two genders, warm-blooded, and so on. But, for intelligence one would assume brain capacity, and therefore the body would need some sort of protective mechanism for the vital brain—an exoskeleton, a skull, something like that.

"To build tools they would need some kind of manipulative digits, like fingers (not necessarily an opposable thumb, maybe prehensile tentacles). There would have to be a reproductive system, but it could be budding, seeding, fission, egg laying—not necessarily live, warm-blooded birth. They would require some sort of sensory systems, the analogs of eyes, ears, smelling apparatuses. But their "eyes" would have evolved for the peak spectrum of their own sun, not necessarily ours.

"Do they live in a sea? In the clouds of a gas giant? On land? In a desert? In a jungle? They would need a way to eat or consume energy, and they would need to excrete waste. For intelligence, they'd need to communicate—by voice? Pheromones? Blinking phosphorescent patches?"

"When it comes to film and TV, it's problematic to make a race of aliens that does not resemble humans. Actors have to play these roles. What aliens look like in the real world will depend on where they evolved. An alien that evolved in interstellar space would have very different needs from an alien that evolved on an Earthlike planet.

"There is one thing that is nearly certain: an alien life form will be symmetrical. Everything we know of that grows follows a symmetrical pattern. Cut a tree in half lengthwise, the branches and roots on one side would be fairly similar to the other. The same applies to humans and all living growth, even inorganic growth such as crystals and galaxies.

"The size and shape of the alien would be determined by gravity, ambient density, and source of energy. Plantlike aliens are unlikely because photosynthesis doesn't encourage complex survival strategies. The need to chase food favors mobile life. If such life evolved in a thick atmosphere, it's likely to be a horizontal creature. A thinner atmosphere would favor the most vertical animals. Two legs and two arms are more efficient than four legs, so incorporating the rule of symmetry, it's not unlikely that aliens would have evolved just like humans: bipedal and upright.

"When we consider that 95 percent of the universe is not perceptible by our senses or technology (dark matter and energy), then it's most likely that's where the aliens are. So one might say most aliens don't look like anything because they are invisible."

Never mind the little green or gray men with oversize craniums and oversize eyes and tiny mouths. "Bilateral symmetry is actually a pretty crappy design, when you think about it. Yes, it looks nice and even but what's the point? Why have two sides exactly the same when you could have something completely different on the other side? Even the Daleks figured this one out—they had a sucker arm on one side and a laser on the other. And bipedal? Ridiculous—one good push and we fall over. Why would another world's race evolve with that exact same design flaw? Why would another world's race grow eyes and a nose and a tongue and all the other fiddly bits we have? They wouldn't.

"Living beings evolve in response to their environment. We grew opposable thumbs so we could better grasp objects. Monkeys developed prehensile tails for the same reason. We have eyes because light breaks down into the visible end of the electromagnetic spectrum here.

"But if we had occurred on a completely different world, with different temperatures and topography and flora and fauna, we would have evolved differently. And if that other world had a completely different chemical composition, so would we. All life on Earth is carbon-based, but that wouldn't be the case elsewhere. Life forms could be silicon-based or iron-based or anything else at all. They could have any number of arms and legs—or none at all.

"Perhaps life on other planets evolved without physical form or with no fixed form—perhaps there are aliens who are nothing more than sentient clouds, or who have mutable bodies that can alter to suit the needs of the moment. Maybe they can sail through space unaided, and use stellar radiation for a food source and a sensory array, detecting changes in the radiation the same way bats detect sound waves. Who needs eyes and ears when your entire being resonates? Who needs a distinct brain when your consciousness is spread throughout just like our nerve endings are with us? Why have skin when your form is held together by electrostatic shock and mental control, and can condense or expand at will?

"There are plenty of creatures here on Earth that are so astoundingly different from us that we can barely comprehend them. Try watching an octopus pull itself through a tiny crack in a glass tank sometime, or examine a tobacco hornworm, or look at a praying mantis up close. Then think about how small our planet is compared with the universe as a whole—it's like finding the weirdest shaped M&M in the bag, and then realizing that you're in an entire candy store filled with literally thousands of other kinds of candy, most of which you've never even heard of before. A real alien would be so far from anything we've ever imagined that we would barely be able to comprehend its existence. And we would seem just as completely, bafflingly bizarre to it."

'Somewhere in the universe, there must be, have been, or will be other advanced civilizations. The chances of anyone alive today seeing or even communicating with them are very slim. However, such problems should not stop us from imagining what they might be like.

"First, a real alien is bilaterally symmetrical, endothermic with excellent manipulative abilities, and has a hard container for a brain.

"Eyes? Of course. You have to see to build a civilization. The squid has better eyes than we do, and the eye seems to have evolved separately a few times at least. Our alien will have eyes that may only resemble ours superficially. A lens and iris are almost an absolute requirement. The whites do not have to be white. Neither does the iris have to be colored in anything like the way ours are. How many eyes? One just will not do. Inability to perceive distance will lead to rapid extinction. Unless you can find a good reason for it, extra eyes create evolutionary baggage and will not persist, spiders not withstanding. Eyes being important, they will be recessed and capable of being covered, as necessary. Our aliens are not likely to be bug-eyed, although we cannot totally rule that out.

"Nose? An alien must have the means to breathe. It must be symmetrical. The nose does not have to be in the middle of a face, although that is convenient for some purposes such as sharing the air pipe with a mouth for times of exertion. You can imagine other arrangements.

"Mouth? Must have means for ingestion of food. All large animals have some means to capture and swallow food. Some masticate it; others do not. Teeth are rather common on Earth but other systems of eating are possible. The problem is that plants and animals have been in an evolutionary war for millenia. We inherit the outcome of that war. Teeth were necessary to eat plants that became more fibrous, an evolutionary reaction to being eaten. There are other ways to sheer off plant food, such as what birds do. They 'chew' in their gizzards.

"Legs? Most certainly. Other means of locomotion will be relatively slow and be relegated to armored animals and of those living in holes. Neither of these lifestyles will lead naturally to greater intelligence. How many legs? In our case, we adapted the forelegs for manipulation from animals with four legs. No land animals with endoskeletons have more legs. The implication is that aliens with two legs are more likely than those with four.

"Fur? Hair? Feathers? Scales? Something else truly alien? The skin covering could be anything that makes sense. Real feathers are not so likely. Because feathers are used for flight, brains will be small. Scales are unlikely because they are particularly well-adapted for ectotherms, although a scaly sort of skin might be possible. Fur versus hair is hard to sort out because of my inherent bias. Fur has good reasons for being that are not related to intelligence. If furry, our aliens probably have short fur.

"Head? If you define head as a bony enclosure for the brain as well as the location for eyes, nose, and mouth, then it's likely. The nose could be located above or below the mouth. Above works better for swimming, but that's not a strict evolutionary requirement.

"Neck? Not at all necessary. Useful to swivel the head, but you can imagine other ways to look around. It's an annoying place for big cats to grab and strangle you with their powerful mouths.

"Arms? You must have something with which to manipulate things. Tentacles are unlikely because of their inability to perform fine manipulation. They usually have suckers on them and a very different purpose than toolmaking. The number of joints could be greater, and the direction of bend could be different.

"Fingers? You must have a way to grab tightly and a way to pick up small objects and twist and turn them. Two fingers are probably too few. Five is overkill. Three or four (as cartoon characters have) is about right. Our three joints in our fingers is about right. One would not do. Two, as with our thumbs, is unlikely."

"An octopus is a good example of an advanced-alien analogue on Earth. Octopuses are quite (probably human-level) intelligent and live in a totally alien environment (compared with ours). Evolution has had to find novel solutions to the pressures they're under—pressures completely different than those that shaped mammals on land.

"Dolphins and chimpanzees are extremely close to us—we're all mammals. The last common ancestor for humans and dolphins was around 100 million years ago, and for humans and chimpanzees was about 10 million years ago. Most of the evolutionary choices leading to intelligence were probably made before the splits occurred. The last common ancestor between mammals and octopuses is much, much further back in time, probably 800 million years ago.

"Aliens with advanced technology would have to be on land (technology needs fire to kick-start it). What we would expect in order to develop a technology comparable to ours? Hands with fingers (for delicate, precise manipulation) are important. At least two legs are needed for locomotion. If it has four legs, think centaurs—you need those hands to build things.

"You need binocular vision to judge distance (to prey). Elevated head to see predators. Eyes near the brain to reduce the time delay (or degradation) of the visual signal. Sound and smell sensors (ears and nose). Your survival chances improve if you can use all of the ways you can to detect food, mates, and predators. Living in an atmosphere means sounds and smells will arrive before the stinky, noisy predator."

Thus, in most of our stories about aliens, the aliens come because of us (be it to kill, enslave, or study us) or to take things that are dear to us. "I believe aliens exist. However, I don't pay much mind to the little-green-men mythology. I don't think aliens have to be humanoid, carbon-based, or even alive by our definition of alive. Human beings aren't made to survive in space. If aliens arrive on Earth here, it means they have survived in space and have the means to adapt to our atmosphere. I think it highly possible that they'll be nothing like us.

"In my novel Lagoon, the aliens that show up in Lagos, Nigeria, are fundamental shape-shifters with consciousness and control all the way to the molecular level, and their molecules do not resemble or operate like anything Earth-based. They use matter (whatever that matter is and wherever it comes from) and they adapt to wherever they are. And their wants and needs and methods of going about their business are wholly foreign to humans.

"I don't see why aliens couldn't be microscopic, only be seen at wavelengths beyond human detection, be built in a way so outside of human understanding that to look upon them would cause one to faint. I don't think aliens have been, are, will be what we are expecting."

It seems strange to think the truly alien would look anything at all like us. Nature always surprises.

"Talking and reacting to alien behavior will be the hardest. We already struggle to keep patient enough to understand other cultures and differences within our own human cultures. Dolphins, octopuses, elephants—these all seem to be higher-order thinkers, yet we cannot communicate well with them nor do we particularly share the planet well. What will an alien encounter be like? How will their actions seem?

"In short, I'd assume things would be easily misunderstood, as we all come with an existing load of baggage about such an encounter. And their actions will depend a great deal on the environs they come from, and the nature of their groups. Are they solitary? Or prefer herds or small bands? What would be the mind of an intelligent predator who normally lives alone? If we do find other life, I have to assume that it would hint that a great deal of life is possible. We may encounter all of the above. Creatures like us, and yet so different from us we can barely understand them. It might be a plethora of minds and body types, much like the world is filled now with a wide variety of intelligences and forms. It might be quite overwhelming . . ."

UFO expert says mystery surrounding extraterrestrial life is close to being unravelled

The leading American UFO investigator said mainstream science had opened up the door for ufologists to investigate physical traces of alien activity.

But she said it would take a big event such as Victoria’s Westall case in 1966 to reveal the full scope of the paranormal world — not the government revealing what it knows.

‘GOVERNMENTS KNOW UFOs ARE VISITING US’

“I believe 100 per cent the government is covering up UFO activity,” she told the Sunday Herald Sun.

“But eventually things will filter down.

Ms Kloetzke, deputy director of the world’s biggest UFO organisation, Mutual UFO Network, is among the top minds of ufology who have gathered in Melbourne for the Edge of Reality Ufology conference.

About 130 people attended the conference at the Jasper Hotel in the CBD.

It is her first time in Australia and she said she feels like she is “in heaven” as the country is known for some of the most anomalous cases.

She said Australia was unique with its big open spaces that seemed to attract more UFOs.

Ms Kloetzke, author of Admissible: The Field Manual for investigating UFOs, Paranormal Activity and Strange Creatures, as well as children’s book Are Aliens Really Real, said UFO sightings and alien encounters were “escalating” with about 900 cases a month reported worldwide.

“’Those are just the citizens of the world that are reporting it — there’s many others who don’t,” she said.

She had one question for Victorians: “Who thinks we’re absolutely here all by ourselves?”

Playing on the sports oval at Westall High School in Clayton South, more than 200 students and teachers described witnessing a grey saucer-shaped craft with a slight purple hue fly over about 10.30am. Frederick Valentich, 20, disappeared while piloting a small aircraft over the Bass Straight from Moorabbin Airport to King Island in Tasmania. In his last radio calls, he described an unusual object hovering over the top of him. No trace of him or his Cessna was found.

The Rosedale water tank mystery

September 30, 1980

A 54-year-old farmhand on a property 8km from Rosedale in the Gippsland region woke at 1am to a screeching noise — and the cattle clearly distressed — and went outside to investigate. He described a dome object with a white top and orange underneath with circular windows or lights, hovering around a 10,000-gallon open-topped water tank. The UFO landed beside the tank, leaving a ring mark on the grass. The next day the full tank was mysteriously empty.

The Burkes Flat “bent headlight beams”

April 4, 1966

Around 8pm, Ron Sullivan witnessed an unusual object putting on a light display in a paddock while driving along Dunolly-St Arnaud Rd, near Bourkes Flat in central Victoria. He said his car’s headlights bent towards the UFO, causing him to veer off the road and almost hit a tree. Two days later, another driver died after hitting the tree Mr Sullivan had swerved to miss. Researchers ponder if that driver experienced the same phenomena.

The Kelly Cahill encounter

August 8, 1993

Mother Kelly Cahill was driving home with her husband and three children in the Dandenong foothills, near Belgrave, when they noticed the lights of a rounded craft with windows just after midnight. She recalls her whole family being abducted by aliens and how they controlled their minds and performed embarrassing procedures on them.

Internetspeurneuzen zijn ervan overtuigd dat in de sneeuw op de Zuidpool de resten van een gecrashte UFO kunnen worden gezien op Google Maps.

Valentin Degretev zei op een Russische sociale mediasite dat het object lijkt op een ‘klassieke’ vliegende schotel. “Het is zeker geen poolstation of vliegtuig, omdat er geen vliegtuigen of helikopters zijn die zo groot zijn,” zei hij. Degterev schat dat het object een doorsnee heeft van zo’n 62 meter.

Het bevroren landschap van Antarctica strekt zich uit over een gebied van 14 miljoen kilometer. Velen geloven dan ook dat mensen er nooit achter komen als er daadwerkelijk een UFO zou landen op de Zuidpool. Ruwweg 98 procent van het continent is bedekt met een dikke laag ijs.

Anderen zijn sceptisch over de claim dat de vorm een gecrashte UFO is. Het zou bijvoorbeeld een scheur in het ijs of een kloof kunnen zijn.

VIDEO: België in de ban van vreemd cirkelvormig object

Een automobilist heeft op dinsdag 18 augustus boven De Pinte in de Belgische provincie Oost-Vlaanderen een cirkelvormig object vastgelegd met zijn dashcam. Het Belgische UFO-meldpunt is op zoek naar getuigen van de voorlopig onverklaarbare UFO-melding.

“We kregen deze oproep vorige week binnen en konden na verder onderzoek besluiten dat het object een diameter van één meter heeft. We dachten onmiddellijk aan een luchtballon, maar wie laat die nu op om half 10 in de ochtend. Een drone kan, maar daarvoor verplaatst het object zich waarschijnlijk te traag,” zegt Frederick Deleare van het meldpunt.

Het object bewoog van het zuidwesten naar het noordoosten. De beelden van de dashcam zijn van goede kwaliteit en daarom wil het UFO-meldpunt dit geval grondiger onderzoeken. Om dit vreemde verschijnsel te kunnen verklaren zijn er meer getuigenissen of beelden nodig.

“Ik weet 100 procent zeker dat de overheid UFO-activiteit onder de pet houdt”

Een vooraanstaande UFO-expert heeft gezegd dat het mysterie rond buitenaards leven spoedig zal worden ontrafeld. Chase Kloetzke zei dat de wetenschappelijke gemeenschap de deur heeft geopend voor het onderzoek naar fysieke sporen van aliens. Dat meldt de Australische krant Sunday Herald Sun.

Om de omvang van de paranormale wereld te onthullen moet er volgens Kloetzke iets gebeuren zoals in Westall in de Australische staat Victoria in 1966. Op 6 april dat jaar waren meer dan 200 leerlingen en leraren van twee scholen getuige van een onbekend vliegend object dat in een weiland landde.

Kantelpunt

“Ik weet 100 procent zeker dat de overheid UFO-activiteit onder de pet houdt,” zei de plaatsvervangend directeur van MUFON, de grootste UFO-organisatie ter wereld. “Eén van de redenen hiervoor zou zijn dat ze denken dat de mensheid de waarheid niet kan accepteren.”

De expert zei dat het voor de meeste ufologen is alsof we een kantelpunt naderen. Ze zei verder dat ze 10 jaar geleden werd gezien als een gekke vrouw die onderzoek deed naar UFO’s, maar nu luisteren mensen aandachtig en gaan ze zelf op onderzoek uit.

Grote gebeurtenis

Kloetzke legde uit dat we weinig van de overheid hoeven te verwachten en dat er een grote gebeurtenis moet plaatsvinden. De mensheid komt steeds dichter in de buurt van de waarheid, zei ze. Overal ter wereld zijn er mensen die claimen dat aliens echt bestaan.

Volgens Kloetzke, die in Melbourne was voor de Edge of Reality Ufology-conferentie, ‘escaleert’ het aantal waarnemingen van UFO’s en aliens. Wereldwijd worden er 900 gevallen per maand gemeld. “En dat zijn alleen nog maar burgers die er melding van maken, veel anderen doen dat niet,” zei ze.

Graham Hancock: “Hoogontwikkelde beschaving op Antarctica weggevaagd door komeet”

De Britse oud-journalist Graham Hancock suggereert in zijn nieuwe boek Magicians of the Gods dat een komeet met een doorsnee van 30 kilometer binnen 15 jaar de aarde kan verwoesten.

Hancock, voormalig correspondent voor The Economist, zegt dat zijn boek bewijst dat een hoogontwikkelde beschaving tussen 11.600 en 12.800 jaar geleden is weggevaagd door stukken van dezelfde komeet.

De auteur claimt dat de aarde in 2030 in het spoor van dezelfde komeet, genaamd Encke, terecht zou kunnen komen. Delen van de komeet draaien nog altijd in een baan die de omloopbaan van de aarde doorkruist, aldus Hancock.

Gevaar

“Astronomen menen dat een fragment van de oorspronkelijk komeet verborgen blijft en een gevaar vormt voor al het leven op aarde,” schreef hij. Hancock schreef 20 jaar geleden in Fingerprints of the Gods dat een oude beschaving, waar ook inwoners van het legendarische Atlantis deel van uitmaakten, bijna 13.000 jaar geleden door een komeet is vernietigd.

Het boek ging 9 miljoen keer over de toonbank en werd een bestseller. In het vervolg, Magicians of the Gods, zegt hij de smoking gun te hebben die bewijst dat hij al die tijd gelijk heeft gehad. “In 1995 schreef ik een boek over alle tekenen die in de richting van een verloren beschaving wezen,” zei hij. “Er miste nog een smoking gun. Die hebben we nu.”

Astronomie en wiskunde

“Een aantal papers in tijdschriften leveren bewijs dat de aarde 12.800 jaar geleden daadwerkelijk is geraakt door een komeet, precies zoals ik in mijn boek schreef,” zei Hancock.

Hij claimt dat Antarctica bijna 13.000 jaar geleden werd geraakt door een komeet. Op dat moment, duizenden jaren voordat het wiel werd uitgevonden, zou daar al een hoogontwikkelde beschaving hebben geleefd. Hancock zegt dat onze kennis over astronomie en wiskunde afkomstig is van die ‘verloren’ beschaving.

Astronoom: “Asteroïden in ons zonnestelsel kunnen buitenaardse ruimteschepen zijn”

Aliens die geen thuisplaneet meer hebben kunnen zich in enorme ruimteschepen schuilhouden in de asteroïdengordel. Dat zegt astrobioloog Duncan Forgan van de Universiteit van St Andrews in Schotland, zo meldt de Britse Daily Express.

Sommige objecten die we detecteren in de planetoïdengordel kunnen in werkelijkheid enorme UFO’s zijn, aldus Forgan. Hij voegde toe dat pas een klein deel van de Melkweg is verkend. Bovendien is daarbij alleen gezocht naar radiosignalen.

Voetbalveld

Forgan wil de zoektocht uitbreiden en zoeken naar tekenen van buitenaardse vervuiling, ruïnes op verlaten planeten en mijnbouw door robots op asteroïden. Hij liet een afbeelding zien van een klein vierkantje in een voetbalveld, om aan te geven dat we nog maar een piepklein deel van het sterrenstelsel hebben onderzocht.

“Dit vierkant is slechts een fractie van de Melkweg,” zei hij. “We hebben ons eigen zonnestelsel nog niet eens in kaart gebracht. Er kunnen ruimteschepen in het zonnestelsel zijn, waarvan we dachten dat het asteroïden waren.”

Niet voldoende

Forgan is lid van een Brits wetenschapspanel dat pleit voor een uitgebreidere zoektocht naar aliens. Hij denkt niet dat wij als mensen zo bijzonder zijn en dat er andere rassen in het heelal leven.

De astronoom deed zijn uitspraken tijdens het British Science Festival aan de Universiteit van Bradford. Het SETI Institute zoekt vooral naar radiosignalen, maar volgens veel wetenschappers is dat niet voldoende.

Sterrenmens uit Zuid-Afrikaanse grot kan geschiedenis van de mensheid herschrijven

Onderzoekers hebben fossielen gevonden van een nieuwe mensensoort. De ‘homo naledi’ zou zijn soortgenoten na hun dood ook hebben begraven, een kenmerk dat eerder alleen aan de mens werd toegeschreven.

De eerste fossielen werden eind 2013 opgegraven in een grot op 50 kilometer van de Zuid-Afrikaanse hoofdstad Johannesburg. Ze bevonden zich in de meest onderzochte vallei op het Afrikaanse continent, aldus hoofdonderzoeker Lee Berger van de Universiteit van Witwatersrand. Het gaat om de grootste fossielenvondst van mensachtigen ooit.

De verzameling fossielen bestaat uit meer dan 1500 botten die toebehoorden aan tenminste 15 personen. Volwassenen werden 1,5 meter lang en wogen gemiddeld 45 kilo. De nieuwe mensensoort is homo naledi gedoopt, naar de grot ‘Rising Star’ waarin de fossielen zijn gevonden. Naledi betekent ster in de lokale taal Sesotho.

De soort had een klein brein, ongeveer zo groot als een sinaasappel en met een inhoud van 500 kubieke centimeter (ruim twee keer zo klein als dat van de moderne mens). Hoogleraar Fred Spoor van University College London sprak van een spectaculaire en bijzondere vondst.

Het is volgens de wetenschappers moeilijk te zeggen in welke periode ze precies op aarde rondliepen omdat de 1550 botresten geïsoleerd lagen. Wel kunnen ze zeggen dat de resten zeker meer dan 2,5 miljoen jaar oud zijn. Het onderzoek is verschenen in het tijdschrift eLife.

Vliegtuig Ryanair breekt landing af nadat vliegtuigspotters een UFO waarnemen

Een toestel van Ryanair dat onderweg was van Dublin naar Liverpool, heeft een noodlanding moeten maken vanwege een UFO. De Boeing wilde gaan landen toen er iets in de lucht werd waargenomen dat mogelijk gevaarlijk was voor het vliegtuig. Dat meldt de Liverpool Echo.

Passagiers zeiden dat ze van de piloot te horen kregen dat het mogelijk om een drone ging. Een woordvoerder van de luchthaven in Liverpool liet echter weten dat er na inspectie niets gevonden is.

“We dachten dat we iets zagen vliegen op enkele kilometers van de luchthaven,” zei Robin Tudor. “De Boeing kwam op dat moment aanvliegen en onze standaardprocedure schrijft voor dat het vliegtuig dan moet uitwijken.”

Het toestel landde uiteindelijk veilig om 22.47 uur lokale tijd. Volgens alien-jagers is er geen drone, maar een UFO bij het vliegtuig in de buurt geweest. Vliegtuigspotters maakten namelijk melding van een ongeïdentificeerd vliegend object boven de rivier de Mersey.

Afgelopen jaar werden vluchten omgeleid nadat een UFO was gezien in de buurt van het vliegveld van de Duitse stad Bremen. Op de radar verscheen steeds kort een object, maar de luchtverkeersleiders wisten niet wat het was. Met een politiehelikopter werd zonder succes het gebied afgespeurd. Na drie uur verdween de UFO van de radar.

VIDEO: Mysterieuze vuurbal valt uit de lucht in hartje Bangkok

Inwoners van de Thaise hoofdstad Bangkok werden gisteren tijdens de ochtendspits opgeschrikt door een mysterieuze vuurbal met een spoor van rook. Op diverse plaatsen legden mensen vast hoe de vuurbal voorbijschoot.

Rond 08.41 uur lokale tijd zagen veel inwoners van de stad hoe de vuurbal door de lucht vloog en vervolgens ontplofte. Het verschijnsel veroorzaakte paniek omdat op de sociale media de meest wilde en uiteenlopende geruchten werden verspreid.

Er werd onder meer gezegd dat het ging om een vliegtuigcrash of een helikopter die was geraakt door een lichtbol. Een andere getuige liet weten dat het om een brandende ballon zou gaan. Er werd ook nog gedacht aan stukken van een oude satelliet.

Volgens de Thaise autoriteiten ging het om een meteoor. “Het is met enige zekerheid een grote rots die in onze atmosfeer is opgebrand,” zei Phil Plait, oud-lid van het Hubble Space Telescope Team van NASA. Zo’n vallende ster komt met een enorme snelheid de atmosfeer van de aarde binnen waardoor er een lichtspoor ontstaat.

De meteoor was waarschijnlijk al helemaal opgebrand voordat hij de grond kon bereiken. Voor zover bekend heeft de vuurbal geen schade aangericht. In 2013 raakten tenminste 1200 mensen gewond toen een meteoriet insloeg bij de Russische stad Tsjeljabinsk.

Wetenschappers zoeken naar tekenen dat we in een multiversum vol parallelle universa leven

Al jaren wordt het idee dat we in een multiversum – bestaande uit een oneindig aantal parallelle universa – leven gezien als een reële mogelijkheid.

Misschien ken je Schrödingers kat, een experiment uit de kwantummechanica. Een kat wordt in een doos opgesloten met een buisje waarin een radioactieve stof zit. Vervolgens wacht je een uur. Als er gedurende dat uur een deeltje van de stof vervalt, zal een sensor de straling opmerken en met een hamertje een flesje gif stukslaan. Dat kat zou dan sterven. Het is echter ook mogelijk dat er geen deeltje vervalt, waardoor het flesje gif intact blijft en de kat in leven blijft. Je weet niet welke van de twee scenario’s waar is, totdat je de deksel van de doos optilt.

Volgens de bizarre wetten van de kwantummechanica is de kat, zolang je de deksel niet optilt, zowel dood als levend. Wat als alle mogelijke scenario’s los van elkaar bestaan in verschillende universa van een multiversum?

Versnelde expansie

Het heelal maakte in het begin een korte periode van versnelde expansie door, kosmologische inflatie genoemd. Deze hypothese voorspelt dat er andere delen van het universum moeten zijn die nog steeds versneld uitdijen. Door de kwantumfluctuaties van de ruimtetijd bereiken sommige delen van het heelal nooit het eindstadium van inflatie.

Sommige delen kunnen zich afsplitsen en andere universa vormen, die ook weer andere universa kunnen vormen, enzovoorts. Het gevolg is een oneindig aantal universa. Door dit scenario te combineren met de snaartheorie ontstaat de mogelijkheid dat in al deze universa verschillende natuurkundige wetten gelden.

Snaartheorie

In de snaartheorie worden deeltjes voorgesteld als minuscule, trillende snaartjes. De manier waarop zo’n snaartje trilt, bepaalt wat voor deeltje het is. Daarmee is het een theorie die alle deeltjes en krachten herleidt tot één principe. Deze theorie vereist tenminste zes of zeven extra ruimtelijke dimensies. Die zouden op heel kleine schaal zijn opgerold, waardoor we er gewoonlijk niets van merken.

Universa die worden voorgesteld door de snaartheorie en inflatie bestaan in dezelfde fysieke ruimte en kunnen elkaar overlappen en met elkaar in botsing komen. Die botsingen laten mogelijk sporen achter waar we naar kunnen zoeken.

Dat is precies wat wetenschappers momenteel doen. Ze zoeken ernaar in de kosmische achtergrondstraling en in de vorm van zwaartekrachtsgolven, fluctuaties in de kromming van de ruimtetijd. Dergelijke golven kunnen het bestaan van inflatie bewijzen en ondersteunen daarmee het idee van een multiversum.

Wetenschappers ontdekken tweede Stonehenge: “Grootste prehistorische monument in Groot-Brittannië”

Het mysterie van Stonehenge wordt nog een stuk vreemder. Wetenschappers hebben op drie kilometer van het monument nog eens 100 grote blokken gevonden die begraven liggen onder de grond.

De BBC spreekt van ‘het grootste prehistorische monument in Groot-Brittannië’. De belangrijke vondst is zondag bekendgemaakt door wetenschappers van de Universiteit van Bradford. Aan de rand van de Durrington Walls, een muur van aarde, vonden ze zo’n 100 stenen op ongeveer een meter onder de grond.

Stonehenge II (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute)

Het gaat om reusachtige stenen die tot wel 4,5 meter groot zijn. De stenen, die tot nu toe ‘verloren waren voor de archeologie’, staan niet in een cirkel opgesteld, maar liggen in een rij. Gedacht wordt dat de stenen net als bij Stonehenge een religieuze betekenis hebben. De lijn komt namelijk overeen met de baan van de zon tijdens de winterzonnewende. Stonehenge is ook gebouwd naar de stand van de zon. Tijdens de zomer- en winterwende schijnt de zon precies tussen de stenen door.

De wetenschappers staan voor een raadsel. “De vindplaats is helemaal nieuw voor ons en ook de schaal is ongekend,” zeiden ze. “We denken niet dat er ooit al zoiets is ontdekt in de wereld.”

De stenen zijn gevonden met behulp van radartechnologie. Zo’n 4500 jaar geleden bevond zich een belangrijke nederzetting in het gebied. Vandaag de dag is alleen nog de enorme aarden wal zichtbaar.

Apollo 11 and UFO encounters: What Astronauts have to say

Apollo 11 has surely given us a lot to talk about ever since the historic moment a Saturn V rocket launched from the  Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16. ?Ufologists suggest that Apollo 11 traveled to the moon followed by numerous unidentified flying objects that were seen by the three members: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.

 

In the book "Celestial Raise" written by Richard Watson, ASSK, 1987 there are some very interesting details which have led conspiracy theorists to suggest an otherworldly encounter took place on the surface of the moon, during the two minutes of silence while the astronauts were on the moon:

 

"During the transmission of the Moon landing of Armstrong and Aldrin, who journeyed to the Moon in an American spaceship, two minutes of silence occurred in which the image and sound were interrupted. NASA insisted that this problem was the result of one of the television cameras which had overheated, thus interfering with the reception

 

 

This unexpected problem surprised even the most qualified of viewers who were unable to explain how in such a costly project, one of the most essential elements could break down... Some time after the historic Moon landing, Christopher Craft, director of the base in Houston, made some surprising comments when he left NASA.

 

Ufologist and writer Timothy Good suggests that HAM radio operators receiving the VHF signals directly picked up the following message which was screened by NASA from the public.

 

 

Mission Control: What's there ? Mission Control calling Apollo 11.

Apollo 11: These babies are huge, sir ... enormous....Oh, God, you wouldn't believe it! I'm telling you there are other space craft out there... lined up on the far side of the crater edge... they're on the moon watching us.

 

NASA has always denied that an encounter of any kind took place and that everything said is an elaborate hoax. Interestingly, in his book "RETURN TO EARTH" Colonel Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. writes the following on pages 223-224;

 

In the middle of one evening, Houston time, I found myself idly staring out the window of the Columbia and saw something that looked a bit unusual. It appeared brighter than any star and not quite the pinpoints of light that stars are. I pointed this out to Mike and Neil, and the three of us were beset with curiosity. With the help of the monocular we guessed that whatever it was, it was only a hundred or so miles away. Looking at it through our sextant we found it occasionally formed a cylinder, but when the sextant's focus was adjusted it had a sort of illuminated "L" look to it. It had a shape of some sort -- we all agreed on that -- but exactly what it was we couldn't pin down. We asked Houston some casual questions: "How far away is the Saturn third stage?" The response was in the vicinity of six thousand miles. That wasn't it.

 

It could possibly have been one of the panels of the Saturn third stage which fly off to expose the LM and cannot be traced from earth. We could see it for about forty-five seconds at a time as the ship rotated, and we watched it on and off for about an hour. We debated whether or not to tell the ground we had spotted something, and decided against it. Our reason was simple: The UFO people would descend on the message in hordes, setting off another rash of UFO spotting back on earth. We concluded it was most likely on of the panels. Its course appeared in no way to conflict with ours, and it presented no danger. We dropped the matter there.

 

 

Is it possible that Apollo 11 witnessed an encounter with otherworldly beings as many suggest? And is it possible that official transcripts speak about Aliens and UFO's on the surface of the moon? These questions are likely to remain an enigma but we have to accept the fact that Astronauts such as Colonel Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. firmly believe we are not the only species in the universe and that something mysterious could have occurred on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

ALIEN ABDUCTION ~ FACT OR FICTION?

If the figures are to be believed, up to 4 million people have been abducted by aliens in the US, with many millions more captured world wide. Although the existence of human hungry aliens might be impossible to disprove per se, it is unlikely that extra-terrestrials could manage such mass kidnappings without being commonly noticed. This suggests that there are many people who falsely believe they have been seized by creatures from outer-space, perhaps after experiencing unusual and bizarre phenomena. The purpose of this article is to communicate some of the recent research in psychology and neuroscience that gives us some clues as to how and why these experiences and beliefs occur.

Some of the many thousands of people who claim to have been abducted are likely to be fortune seekers, bar-room braggers, publicity hounds and maybe even some genuine abductees. Yet with the high numbers of people reporting abductions, many of the people who believe they have been captured will likely have been mistaken.

The History of Abductions

Yes there are signs of crafts being seen in the sky and alien contact in ancient text, but without knowledge as to what these hieroglyphs, paintings etc actually symbolize or mean we will stay away from ancient astronaut theories and look at recorded history.

The First reported Sighting to make Print!

In the November 27, 1896 edition of the Stockton, California Daily Mail, Colonel H. G. Shaw claimed he and a friend were harassed by three tall, slender humanoids whose bodies were covered with a fine, downy hair who tried to kidnap the pair.

Colonel H. G. Shaw, along with his friend Camille Spooner, had a close encounter with previously unknown entities.

Shaw was in charge of putting together an exhibition to be displayed at a Fair in Fresno.

Shaw and friend were traveling by horse and carriage in route to Stockton, when their horse froze with fright.

To the two men’s shock, they saw the cause of the horse’s actions; three tall alien looking beings with small delicate hands at the end of their spindly arms stood by the road. They had no hair on their heads, yet a soft, light fuzz over their bodies. Large eyes made their small mouths and ears appear even smaller.

The two eyewitnesses would later tell authorities that the beings had a “strange” type of beauty to them.

All of the beings carried with them a bag of some kind with a hose which they often stuck in their mouths, obviously to breath with. Although there was still some daytime left, the beings also carried with them egg-shaped lamps which glowed. This glow would later illuminate a waiting spaceship.

As the men watched the aliens, the beings were communicating with each other by a type of chant, as no English words were heard by Shaw and Spooner. The men would tell authorities that the aliens made an attempt to abduct them, but that the large difference in mass between the human and alien body thwarted the effort.

Soon, the three alien beings made a move toward a nearby bridge. Using their other worldly lamps, the aliens lighted up the bridge, showing a nearby craft. The UFO was of a cigar shape, and it hovered quietly over the water.

The beings seemed to be almost lighter than air as they moved toward their craft. It seemed that the aliens would almost leave the ground as they walked on the earth.

The beings entered the hovering cigar UFO in a most unconventional way also. They sprung up from the ground and above their craft, and then floated down into the craft through an unseen entry. Soon, the object flew away.

Then in the 1940s and ’50s.

The Space Age was upon us, and sci-fi literature was soaring in popularity with human-alien encounters a recurring theme. In July 1946, “Planet Comics” ran a strip in which aliens used a luminous tractor beam to kidnap a voluptuous female earthling, whom they called Specimen 9. They tell her the abduction is part of “Project Survival,” and as they steer their spaceship toward what looks like Saturn, the leader remarks, “Now home. And if you find our methods ruthless, Specimen 9, it is because our needs are desperate.”

Likewise, in 1954, a comic strip appearing in the British tabloid The Daily Express detailed the alien abduction of a Royal Air Force pilot. Dozens of other abduction stories graced the pages of sci-fi novels and comic books.

Kenneth Arnold, a businessman, was flying his private plane near Mount Rainier in Washington State when he saw nine shining discs moving against the background of the mountain. He estimated their speed as about 1,000 mph. He said that they swerved in and out of the peaks of the Cascade Mountains with “flipping, erratic movements.” He later told a reporter that the objects moved as a saucer would “if you skipped it across the water.” The next day the story appeared in newspapers all over the nation, calling the strange objects “flying saucers.” Hundreds of people soon began reporting sightings of flying saucers, and a US Air Force investigation was initiated; on 4 July, ten days after the sighting, the US Air Force announced confidently that Arnold had been “hallucinating.”

1953 Hunrath and Wilkinson Disappearance

The 1950s was a time of major UFO activity but it was also a time in UFO history known by a group of persons known as “UFO contactees”. These individuals claimed to have made contact with the alien occupants of the flying saucers. For some these contacts were face to face, for others the communications were telepathic. Some claimed to have been given rides on alien spacecraft. Most of the mainstream UFO organizations of the time gave little credence to the contactees, and believed most to be hoaxers or people suffering from delusions. One of the most famous contactees was George Adamski.

George Adamski was born in Poland and immigrated to the US at a young age. By the 1930s, he was living in California as a sort of guru practicing “Universal Progressive Christianity”. He set up a small observatory at a restaurant “Palomar Gardens” below the famous Mount Palomar Observatory. By the early 1950s, Adamski was taking photographs of flying saucers with his telescope and writing science fiction and articles about the occult. On November 20, 1952, Adamski reportedly met an angelic looking man named Orthon who emerged from a landed flying saucer, claiming to be from Venus. During this encounter at the base of the Coxcomb Mountains, not far from Desert Center, California, Adamski was accompanied by six people who were told by Adamski to stay behind while he made the contact with Orthon.

After this encounter, Adamski attracted a small group of followers. One of these was Karl Hunrath, a electrical engineer, who had invented “Bosco” a device which was intended to bring down flying saucers. After a dispute with Adamski, Hunrath moved away from Palomar Gardens and rented an apartment in Los Angeles with Jerrold Baker, a handyman at Palomar Gardens who had also had a falling out with Adamski.

Karl Hunrath was soon working as a radio technician. In June 1953, a old friend of Hunrath’s from Racine, Wisconsin, Wilbur J. Wilkinson, arrived in Los Angeles with his wife and three children. Wilkinson, a co-inventor of Bosco, had left his job as a foreman at an electrical appliance plant, to join Hunrath in his efforts to see a flying saucer and meet an alien.

The two men developed an interest in channeling aliens, meeting other contactees and using psychic techniques and mechanical contractions to communicate with the “Maserians”, beings who allegedly lived on the moon.

On or about November 10, 1953, Karl Hunrath made phone calls to several associates telling them that some people had left Earth for other planets and that no one should be surprised if this might happen to him. On November 11, 1953, Hunrath and Wilkinson rented a small plane at Gardina County Airport near Los Angeles. With three hours of fuel, one hour paid rental, and no filed flight plan, Hunrath flew off with his passenger Wilkinson with the likely intent to meet a grounded saucer which they apparently presumed would take them to Maser, Venus or some other off-Earth populated celestial body.

Apparently to this day, no trace of the aircraft or the two men has been found. Most people presume that Hunrath, an inexperienced pilot, probably crashed somewhere in the mountainous terrain east of Los Angeles. If this is so, the aircraft wreckage may be out there still.

Wilbur J Wilkinson, provided this script, claiming it was from a race using the moon as a way-station for its people from the planet Maser.

NOTE: Adamski was quoted as saying “I made enough wine for all of Southern California…I was making a fortune!” However, the end of Prohibition also marked the decline of his profitable wine-making business, and Adamski later told two friends that’s when he “had to get into this [flying] saucer crap.

Antonio Villas Boas Abduction Case

In 1957, a Brazilian writer named João Martins penned the first installment of a series titled “Flying Saucers’ Terrible Mission” for the magazine O Cruzeiro. “There he describes cases of people in isolated places attacked by small alien beings”.

Martins also asked his readers to write him with their own experiences. Among hundreds of responses, he selected one of a young farmer from Minas Gerais with whom he exchanged several letters.

The next year, Martins paid for the 23-year-old farmer to come to Rio de Janeiro, where he was examined by Dr. Olavo Fontes. The farmer’s name was Antonio Villas Boas, and he claimed to have been abducted by aliens one day after reading Martin’s article?

The story got out. Walter Buhler of the Brazilian ufology group SBEDV, and a follower of the self-described alien contactee George Adamski, learned about Vilas Boas’ story, and in 1962, Buhler visited the young farmer in his hometown. The SBEDV subsequently published a report on the Villas Boas case in English, and the account aligned with Adamski’s earlier descriptions of aliens and their spaceships. In January 1965, an international journal called the Flying Saucer Review reproduced Buhler’s report worldwide.

Villas Boas was working the fields at night to avoid the scorching temperatures of the day, when he saw the red light of a spaceship; it slowly approached him and landed nearby in a field. Villas Boas tried to escape but was captured by small humanoid creatures, which dragged him into their craft.

The aliens conducted a series of experiments on their captive, including taking samples of his body tissue, exposing him to a gas that made him violently ill, and compelling him to have sexual intercourse with a female alien, who was, Villas Boas said, very attractive, with blonde hair and blue, cat-like eyes.

A few details hint that the story was fabricated or imagined. “If you read Villas Boas’ account you may notice the advanced aliens nonetheless used rope ladders. Moreover, “Villas Boas’ original sketch of the alien spaceship, with three legs, looks remarkably like the drawings of Sputnik-1, often depicted with three of its four antennas showing. The Sputnik surely was the talk of the time in 1957 when Villas Boas was supposedly abducted — or imagined his story.”

The Betty and Barney Hill Case

Widespread publicity was generated by the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case of 1961, culminating in a made-for-television film broadcast in 1975 (starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons) dramatizing the events. The Hill incident was probably the prototypical abduction case and was perhaps the first in which the claimant described beings that later became widely known as the Greys and in which the beings were said to explicitly identify an extraterrestrial origin.

The Hills were an interracial couple in the 1960s, and the exhibit discusses Barney Hill’s civil rights activism. However, the couple is best known for giving the first reported incident of an alleged alien abduction in America.

Today, due to television shows and films, the scenario is familiar: UFOs chase down terrified witnesses on a desolate road and take them onto the spaceship to ask them questions or probe them in awkward places.

It began one night when Barney and Betty Hill claimed they were pursued by a glowing UFO through parts of New Hampshire. Betty soon had vivid nightmares (which she interpreted as fragmented memories) about the incident, and the couple came to believe that they had been abducted by the UFO’s occupants, who then erased their memories. The couple sought the help of a psychiatrist, and under hypnosis both Hills soon reported full-blown, detailed “repressed memories” of their abduction.

The Barney and Betty Hill story was celebrated as the most important UFO-related event in the 1960s, and spun into a media sensation. Their experiences became fodder for many magazine articles, books, and a made-for-TV film called “The UFO Incident.” Betty became a UFO celebrity, giving media appearances and writing a book about her story.

As the years passed, however, the story lost its gloss and most realize it to be a hoax.

No other witnesses could support their account, parts of it were implausible, and the validity of “repressed memories” was called into question. Betty Hill’s own reported experiences cast doubt on her credibility. In the decades since her original 1961 experience with her husband Barney, Betty claimed not a few, nor dozens, but hundreds of UFO sightings.

Though UFO investigators desperately wanted to believe her, that became more difficult. One UFO researcher who worked with Betty noted that she was “unable to distinguish between a landed UFO and a streetlight.” In other words, she saw UFOs where none existed.

Even many UFO believers reluctantly admit that much of Betty Hill’s experiences and stories cannot be true and instead are likely imaginative fantasies of a sincere but confused woman. With little or no corroborating evidence and no eyewitnesses to support their remarkable story, the Barney and Betty Hill abduction case is, as often happens, inconclusive at best and a complete fabrication at worst.

If the Witnesses are not hoaxers or scammers then what else explains these experiences?

Sleep paralysis
Awareness during sleep paralysis is a common explanation for this confusion, most probably as abduction experiences and conscious sleep paralysis attacks often share many of the same features, such as waking whilst unable to move, feelings of fear, dread or unease and a feeling of pressure on the body. Normal sleep paralysis happens when the body enters the REM stage of the sleep cycle. The brain stem blocks movement signals that would normally travel from the brain to the muscles, probably to stop us carrying out the movements we dream about doing. The frightening aspect of this occurs when a sleeper awakens, becomes conscious, but who’s movement control is not reinstated by the brain. This state can also be accompanied by what are known as ‘hypnopompic’ hallucinations which occur naturally to many people whilst awakening. These hallucinations can take the form of voices, lights, figures or any number of strange bodily sensations. It is little wonder that when combined with fearful paralysis such uncanny experiences might be interpreted as alien in origin.

Temporal lobe disturbance
Another commonly cited source of internal spookiness are the temporal lobes of the brain. Electrical stimulation of the surface of the temporal lobes (usually done on an awake patient when they are undergoing brain surgery) can produce unusual auditory sensations. Similarly, Michael Persinger, a Canadian scientist, has produced strange sensations in his research participants by using magnets to influence temporal lobe function from outside the skull. Such sensations have included feelings of a ‘presence’, disorientation and fear. It would seem unlikely that a possible abductee would fail to notice if someone placed large magnets near his or her head (or even that they were subject to brain surgery !) before the ‘abduction’ experience. However, similar effects can be caused by epileptic or similar seizures in the temporal lobes. Many epilepsy sufferers who have temporal lobe seizures report mystical experiences, missing time, out of body feelings or even strange smells or ‘atmospheres’ prior to, during or after a seizure. It must be remembered that not all forms of epilepsy cause dramatic shaking of the body, and many simply result in brief lapses of consciousness or experiences such as those noted above. This leads us to wonder whether disturbances in the temporal lobes may also contribute to experiences which some people may interpret as an alien abduction.

Mental illness
Surprisingly, overt mental illness may be one of the least likely explanations for abduction experiences. Research has previously suggested that alien contactees are no more likely to show signs of mental illness than the general population, a finding which has been backed up by several other studies. However, many features once thought present only in mental illness have now been discovered to be held by much of the population. If we look at the healthy population as a whole, these features seem to exist on a continuum with some people reporting anomalous thoughts and feelings or having certain traits more than others. In this vein, it seems people who report themselves as abductees are more likely to endorse unusual experiences, be creative and imaginative, have depressive ideas, be suspicious, have dissociative tendencies and to have suffered childhood trauma. So whilst it seems unlikely that the bizarre experiences reported by most ‘abductees’ stem from severe mental illness (which can produce equally bizarre and seemingly real experiences) it is certainly the case that this group has characteristics that differentiate them from the general population. It is possible that these dispositions may increase the tendency for them to explain an anomalous experience in terms of alien contact.

Memory distortion
Our memories are often infuriatingly fallible, leading us to forget information we want to remember, remember information we’d rather forget, or often confidently recall something that later turns out to be inaccurate. A recent study has investigated memory distortions in people claiming to have been subject to alien capture. Participants in the study were read several lists of similarly themed words then given tests of recall and recognition. The results of the study indicated that ‘abductees’ were able to remember words from the original list as well as ‘non-abductees’, but tended to show a higher rate of recall and recognition for words that were never actually read out in the first place. This suggests that the ‘abductees’ are more likely to misidentify the source of memories, perhaps suggesting that some elements of their abduction experience may have been culled from other sources such as the media or their own imagination.

This effect may also work retrospectively, allowing people to co-opt previous memories to support an abduction account. An early memory study conducted by Frederic Bartlett demonstrated that we reconstruct memories as they are recalled to create a coherent story. This reconstruction takes place using cultural references that give us a frame on which to hang the various remembered experiences. The alien abduction experience is well known to almost everyone, due to the popularity of shows such as the X-Files, and famous cases which have hit the headlines. This may give some people a cultural framework on which they can hang memories from a bizarre, unusual or traumatic experience. Unfortunately it is even the case that naïve or even unscrupulous therapists may push alien abduction as a explanation for a bizarre experience that a client may have undergone. Many examples of therapists willing to use hypnotic regression, a technique noted for its tendency to cause false recall, to recover abduction experiences can be found on the internet. Perhaps giving an off-the-shelf explanation for strange experiences that the brain is quite capable of generating, without the need for extra-terrestrial intervention.

Conclusion
It would certainly be foolish to discount the possibility of anything unlikely, simply because of its improbability. Yet we must also remember that we can often find explanations for anomalous experience within ourselves. As the old doctor’s adage goes ‘When you hear hoof beats, start by thinking horses not zebras’. This would seem to work as well for zebras as it does for visitors from outer-space.
