This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Je kan ook hun site bekijken onder www.mufon.com. Ze geven een maandelijks tijdschrift uit, namelijk The MUFON UFO-Journal. Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

UFOs Fly Side By Side At Space Station During Spacewalk On Live Cam, Feb 3, 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News.

Date of sighting: February 3, 2016
Location of sighting: Earths orbit at ISS

The UFO was caught on live ISS cam when astronauts were performing a spacewalk and doing repairs. It was caught by UFO Lou of Youtube. The UFO UFO flashes as its moves along side the space station in the background. The UFO appears to be a rectangle and is rotating, which causes the flashes of light. UFO Lou actually made two videos of these objects. In the second video he caught not one, but three UFOs watching the astronauts on their spacewalk! These are alien drones that monitor and upload life feeds to aliens throughout our solar system. Think of them as alien paparazzi.

UFO Recorded Over Madison, Wisconsin Heading Into Lake Michigan, Feb 1, 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News.

Date of sighting: February 1, 2016
Location of sighting: University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA

This UFO was caught shooting down from our atmosphere and entering Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes is notorious for its UFO sightings, especially night catches. This UFO tries to make itself look like a comet or meteor, but it has no long tail like meteors always do. Also there are no fragmenting parts. This UFO did disappear over Lake Michigan, it is due East of Madison, and this live cam stationed at the university there is pointing East.

Hundreds of videos can be found on Youtube with glowing objects in the day and night over Lake Michigan. There is an alien base below the lake, not on its floor, but several km below the floor level. This UFO today, reinforces the evidence of that base existing.

A Motorist Pulls Over To Film A UFO With Dark Grey Trails Above Greater Manchester

    manchester-ufo

A mysterious aerial object was spotted in the skies over Greater Manchester. A video shows an apparent black object with dark grey trails behind it over Aston-under-Lyne.

The UFO flies through the air and streams out dark grey trails above Ashton-under-Lyne but does not seem to move in any direction.

One of the witnesses Sophie Birch said that she and her partner saw the object while driving in Ashton-under-Lyne. They pulled over to have a better view of the object. Sophie said that the object just wasn’t moving at all and just hovering in the air.

The couple’s conversation can be heard on the video trying to figure out the bizarre object, but they just could not explain it.

She said that it was so unusual to them and that they kept on watching and observing it for quite a while. But they just can’t find a simple explanation as to what the thing is. Sophie suggested that it could be aliens and her sister thought the same thing.

The video appears to show a black ship with something coming out of the back. Sophie said that they noticed a flock of birds flying at one point and they seemed to fly away because of fear.

    Famous UFO Sightings

    The Chiles-Whitted Sighting

    When? 24 July 1948
    Where? Montgomery, Alabama

What happened? This case was one of the very first UFO sightings reported by commercial pilots. Whilst flying from Houston to Atlanta, pilots Chiles and Whitted encountered a large, cigar-shaped craft flying close to them, barely missing them at times. At one point, the object appeared to stop abruptly before vanishing into thin air. The pilots agreed that it was a long, thin craft, with two rows of windows that emitted a blueish glow. It was moving really fast, leaving a trail of orange/red exhaust in its wake. What makes this sighting more credible is that this sighting wasn’t only reported by Chiles and Whitted.  Several witnesses at an airbase in Georgia claim to have seen an identical object half an hour before the pilots’ experience. Government officials were able to rule out the possibility of it being a military or commercial flight as there were no fitting flights scheduled at that time.

How was it explained? After an investigation, government debunkers wrote the sighting off as an illusion caused by temperature inversions, and later changed their minds and claimed it was a meteor. However, as the description of the object does not at all fit that of a meteor, this sighting is still classed as ‘unexplained’.

    The Valentich Disappearance

    When? 21 October 1978
    Where? Bass Strait, Australia

What happened? Frederick Valentich disappeared whilst piloting a light aircraft over Bass Strait. During his routine flight, Valentich reported to Melbourne Air Traffic Control that a ‘strange aircraft’ 1,000m above him was following him. He also complained that his engine was running roughly and his craft began to act in strange ways. The transcript from Valentich’s conversation with Melbourne tells us that the unidentified craft was a long ‘shape’, moving at three times his speed and orbiting him. He also said that its lights were beaming and looked a little like landing lights. Perhaps the most chilling extract from the transcript comes just before Valentich is cut off for good. He says: “It’s hovering – and it’s not an air craft…” Valentich and his aircraft disappeared shortly after this conversation. There was an extensive 7-day search of land and sea and not a single trace of Valentich or his plane was found. The Department of Transport were never able to determine the cause of Valentich’s disappearance, but it was ‘presumed fatal’ for him.

    Valentich with a Cessna

Valentich with a Cessna, similar to the aircraft he disappeared in.

How was it explained? The Australian government came up with several potential explanations. Firstly, as he had enough fuel to fly 800km, they have suggested he may have staged his own disappearance. However there were no reports of matching aircrafts plotted on any radar at this time. Secondly, they claimed that he may have been disoriented and was flying upside down – meaning that the lights he saw were actually a reflection of his own in the water. Finally, they have suggested that he may have committed suicide. However, many believe that – as there was no trace of him or his craft, and he was a competent and qualified pilot with a happy life – he was abducted.

    The Lubbock Lights

    When? August-September 1951
    Where? Lubbock, Texas

What happened? On the night of 25 August 1951 Dr. W.I. Robinson was standing in the back garden of his home with two of his colleagues from the Texas Technological College, Professor Ducker and Dr. Oberg. All of a sudden all three men saw several lights fly across the sky, silently. They flew across the whole horizon within a matter of seconds, and the same thing happened again a few moments later. Between August and November Professor Ducker claims to have seen 12 similar flights, and several of his colleagues witnessed some as well. Hundreds of other non-scientists claimed to have seen the lights too. On the evening of 30 August, Texas Tech student, Carl Hart Jr. spotted the lights and was able to take five successive photos of them with his 35-mm Kodak camera. He was paid $10 for the photos and they were printed in papers nationally. However, the professors stated that these photos did not accurately portray the lights they had been seeing. Carl photographed the lights flying in a V formation – the professors had consistently seen them flying in a U shape.

    Lubbock lights main

    The Lubbock Lights, 1951

How was it explained? Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, who would later become the first director of Project Blue Book, was sent to Lubbock to investigate the lights. To this day, an extraterrestrial explanation for the lights has never been fully debunked, however, other possible explanations have been cited. It was suggested that it was a group of Plover birds, shooting stars or comet fragments – though none of these explanations ever really fit the bill.

    The Belgian UFO Wave

    When? 1989 - 1990
    Where? Across Belgium

What happened? These sightings began in 1989 but peaked with the events on 30/31 March 1990. On that night several unknown objects were tracked by two Belgian aircrafts and photographed. Additionally, they were witnessed by around 13,500 people with 2,600 filing official written statements detailing what they saw. The general description of the sighting is of three unusual lights, brighter than stars and changing colour, flying across the sky towards the South-East of Brussels. Patrols of Belgian aircraft were sent to investigate and try to track the lights, which had formed into small triangles. They managed to obtain a radar lock onto the unidentified crafts on three occasions, but their targets rapidly accelerated each time before descending to ground level. The pilots never made visual contact with the targets. The sudden changes in speed of the unidentified crafts should have been fatal to their pilots. Ground witnesses, the police and the pilots all give identical accounts of this sighting.

How was it explained? Many people are sceptical about these sightings, mainly because the only photo to emerge from the wave turned out to be a hoax. A lot of people explain the sightings as mass delusion, from misinformation spread by the media and the UFO logical organisation. Others argue that they were simply helicopters, their silence explained by a strong natural wind, or other noise drowning their engine sound out. However, nothing has been confirmed or verified, and the Belgian UFO Wave remains unexplained.

    The Battle of Los Angeles

    When? 1942
    Where? Los Angeles, California

What happened? On the night of 24 February 1942, not too long after the attack on Pearl Harbor, air raid sirens rang out across Los Angeles. Thousands of people witnessed searchlights around Los Angeles fixing on a target hovering over the city, and the Coast Guard Anti-aircraft guns were ready to fire. They assumed it was an attack from Japan – but they were wrong. To this day, the Japanese claim they never attacked and there is no wreckage or other evidence to say that they did. People inland started to report seeing the large craft, or fleet, and Air Raid Wardens put the city into blackout. Some witnesses describe the sighting as a tremendous single object, crawling through the sky, whilst others say it was a group of smaller objects. At 3.16am a barrage of AA shells began, and the firing at the object continued throughout the night until the blackout was lifted at 7.21am. Several buildings were damaged in the firing and six people were killed – three by friendly fire and three from stress caused by the attacks.

How was it explained? The next morning the papers were filled with several different explanations. Some reported that it was Japanese planes that were shot down – though there was no evidence to say that this was the case. The LA Times ran a front-page picture showing an image of an odd object caught in the searchlights. The Government denounced the whole story, calling it a false alarm caused by ‘war nerves’, however many witnesses confirm that they believe what they saw was extra-terrestrial.

Do aliens exist? Most compelling evidence of alien existence

Some say it’s obvious we’re not alone, others scorn the very idea and still others yet will hauntingly report their own experiences of alien probings following their casual night-time stroll through the fields of small town America. But with everything from increasingly bizarre reportings from increasingly credible sources, to basic mathematical probability suggesting the likelihood of alien life, these days, scepticism is harder won. Whatever your opinions, you may well find that the following examples have some impact on them.

    Ancient evidence

It’s easy enough to write off much recent phenomena, quoting anything from wayward weather balloons to the perpetuation of the legend and UFO sightings in pop culture providing a cohesive image of extra terrestrials for eye witnesses to draw on should someone cry alien. But what’s slightly harder to dismiss is the ancient evidence (i.e. pre the National Enquirer). Enter the ‘The Madonna with Saint Giovannino’, otherwise known as the UFO painting.

    "The Madonna with Saint Giovannino"
Arcangelo di Jacopo del Sellaio [FAL], via Wikimedia Commons

Created in the 15th century, it depicts the Virgin Mary and in the backdrop of the painting, a man and his dog staring up at a hovering disk-like object that is suspiciously familiar. And this painting isn’t alone either, with everything from ancient cave paintings to Sanskrit Scrolls all depicting alien life. A sighting even crops up in the Bible in The Book of Ezekiel. Either this is compelling evidence, or humanity has a rich tradition of conspiracy theorists.

In the ancient city of Paracas, Peru, archeologists have uncovered mummified remains with elongated skulls dating back to 300 BC.

    Statistical data

Back in 1961, astronomer Frank Drake devised an equation by which he could estimate the likelihood of the existence of alien life, taking into account a number of factors including the average number of planets able to support life and the fraction that could go on to support intelligent life. This was then implemented in 2001. The result: statistically, hundreds of thousands of such planets should technically exist.

    Unsolved sightings

There are more registered sightings of UFOs than there is the word count here to deal with them and the majority of the time, there’s a thorough debunking accompanying them. But throughout history there have been a number that have been harder to explain away, from the to 1853 sighting by a number of students and professors at the Tennessee College campus, to the oft quoted Stephenville Lights case from 2008, with over 200 witnesses spotting the UFO including three policemen who remained anonymous. Consider these compelling cases unsolved.

    Astronauts’ claims

If you’re going to believe any reports of UFOs, you might as well trust those coming from the men who have actually been to space (who usually also come with all their teeth and a P.H.D.). The list of those who have made claims of sightings includes Edgar Mitchell, Cady Coleman and Dr. Brian O’Leary, many also referencing government knowledge of alien existence and cover-ups. Buzz Aldrin has also spoken of his own experience on board the Apollo 11 when they saw something flying alongside them. At first they thought it was the final stage of the detached rocket, until mission control confirmed it was 6000 miles away from them…

    Government files

While some US presidents have released classified files on the subject of UFOs, with Jimmy Carter famously describing his own encounter, others still have been denied access to classified information on the subject altogether, Bill Clinton claiming to be among them. This has led many believers to suggest there’s a cover up afoot. Clinton has been consistently vocal on the existence of aliens and it’s worth noting his opinions on an ‘Independence Day’ situation too. You know, just in case…

UFO and Extraterrestrial Visitors: The Truth Is Finally Out There

UFO and Extraterrestrial Visitors: The Truth Is Finally Out There 2

The truth is absolutely, undeniably, out there and the aliens have undeniably been here. This has been an area that I have taken intrinsic interest in for some time now and it is necessary to believe that not only do aliens exist, but they have visited Earth not once, but multiple times. Now, let’s put to the side that X-Files is my favorite show and let’s leave my love of Tralfamadore out of this discussion. The Fourth Kind is terrifying and not true (not literally true). Also, I will not cite Ancient Aliens from the History Channel.

The preoccupation with extraterrestrials visiting Earth is a fundamental idea that seeks to answer the question, “Are we alone?” A look at the stars says we are not. The sheer number leaves the door wide open that there is living intelligent or not-so-intelligent life out there. Astronomers today use Frank Drake’s equation to determine life in our Milky Way Galaxy alone and though the results are varied; the odds favor other life is indeed out there. And that’s just our galaxy. Humans are always searching for the next bold frontier. It is our nature. The search for extraterrestrial life is a fundamental and necessary search that humans cannot help but undertake. It’s human nature at work.

But did extraterrestrial life forms ever visit Earth? This is a question that can never truly be proven as a definitive “yes” or a definitive “no.” It all comes down to belief in the evidence and whether one “wants to believe” or doesn’t “want to believe.” Skeptics see the evidence and write it off as nonsense, people who believe we are not alone and have been visited see evidence and believe it. A skeptic will always see what’s been proven false and a believer will always see what can’t be disproven.

UFO sightings and alien abductions are the stuff of rednecks and crackpots. This is the stuff of the paranoid and the crazy. But, underneath all the doubt and skepticism lies room for debate. There are multitudes upon multitudes of cases spanning not just 70 or 80 years (since the UFO fascination began in the 1940s) but since the very dawn of civilization itself. Records of extraterrestrial visitors are found in cave art, ancient texts, the bible itself as well as in works of art. Photographs of UFOs and reports of strange phenomena are all out there to be found.

For every case disproven, there is at least one that lies unsolved. The first case I want to point to is perhaps the most well known case of a downed UFO and recovered alien bodies: The Roswell Incident and Area 51. This arguably started the infatuation with UFO sightings, but this case also stands out in the level of government secrecy surrounding the event and the action taken following the event. In July 1947 something crashed in the New Mexico desert outside of Roswell. On July 8th, 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) reported capturing a flying saucer and it was widely reported in the newspapers. They transported the wreckage to a top-secret Air Force Base, Area 51. Following the event, Major Jesse Marcel, who was involved with the original clean up, reported that alien bodies were recovered and taken away by the government.

Following the crash of the UFO, Harry S. Truman issued the Majestic-12 Documents. The documents were government protocol for dealing with downed UFOs, in particular the crash at Roswell, as well as handling extraterrestrial entities found in the wreckage. A briefing to the incoming President Eisenhower included a documents list of all persons associated with the Majestic-12 report as well as a briefing on the recovered aircraft from Roswell and one other recovered craft found in northern Mexico in December 1950. The Majestic-12 documents led to the now-decommissioned Project Blue Book that was the United States Air Force’s official investigation into any and all UFOs, downed UFOs and extraterrestrial entities.Project Blue Book was reviewed by an ad hoc committee headed by Carl Sagan. The purpose was to put the documents under a more rigorous scientific investigation. The conclusion was that all the unidentified flying objects, whatever they were, did not behave in a manner that threatened national security. The review did not discredit the documents.

Project Blue Book was reviewed by an ad hoc committee headed by Carl Sagan. The purpose was to put the documents under a more rigorous scientific investigation. The conclusion was that all the unidentified flying objects, whatever they were, did not behave in a manner that threatened national security. The review did not discredit the documents.

The official documents and government memos concerning the UFO phenomena and extraterrestrial visitors to Earth points to an attempt to discredit public accounts of such things while placing serious emphasis on research and dealing with encounters. Cover-ups such as this have been going on in the United States government for years; even Bill Clinton showed an interest. There is a truth that is being concealed in plain sight. Does that sound too paranoid? Sorry.

The Phoenix Lights was a phenomenon that was witnessed by hundreds of people in the Arizona skies. It was witnessed and addressed by the governor of Arizona and it is an extremely well documented case. The most well-known and documented occurrence of the lights occurred on March 13, 1997. Hundreds of people saw what has been referred to as a “parade” in the skies over the Phoenix area. Between 7:30 pm and 10:30 pm, hundreds of people witnessed lights pass over the state in a triangular formation in the space of 300 miles. The case for many was undeniable proof of extraterrestrial visitors.

A case such as this is important because it is not just the word of one person, but it is the word of hundreds of first-hand accounts. Regular people living in a metropolitan area witnessed a triangular shaped object slowly move over the state. Just this past March, another case of lights over Phoenix were seen and documented with no official explanation as to what they were. It is a bizarre case and it is certainly one that deserves careful consideration before dismissing it as weather balloons or flares.

It is also worth mentioning that extraterrestrials have been visiting our planet and interacting with humans for thousands of years. The “ancient astronaut” theory points to evidence of remarkable human achievement that could seemingly not be done without the aid of an advanced entity. The Nazca Lines in Peru are hundreds of gigantic carvings in the ground that portray various animals and designs that are only visible from the sky. The freestanding stones at Stonehenge, the pyramids, and the statues at Easter Island all seem to be larger-than-life creations given the technology available when they were created. Theorists claim that extraterrestrials had a hand in the creation of these ancient structures and they were created in a sort of homage to the extraterrestrials.

The bible and other ancient texts seem to point to aliens visiting Earth. The Ramayana from the 4th Century BCE in India speaks of intricate flying ships called Vimanas. The text, though very old, does seem to speak with an air of knowledge regarding machines that are not supposed to be seen on Earth for another 2,000 years: “O royal skilled engineer, construct sea-boats, propelled on water by our/experts, and airplanes, moving and flying upward, after the clouds that reside/in the mid-region, that fly as the boats move on the sea, that fly high over/and below the watery clouds. Be thou, thereby, prosperous in this world/created by the Omnipresent God, and flier in both air and lightening.” Yajur Veda 10.19

The bible also makes references that seem to point to extraterrestrial visitors in the Old Testament and the Vatican has come out in support of the idea of extraterrestrial life. What secrets does the Vatican Library and Conservatory hold? We may never know.

Skull-elongation in ancient Egypt is also seen as a means to emulate extraterrestrial visitors or they are said to have been alien-human hybrids living and breeding here on Earth with humans. According to alien abduction accounts, the “grays” (the conventional image of an alien when you think of one) are often depicted as having an elongated skull and large eyes. One of the most well-documented and researched abduction cases is the case of Betty and Barney Hill in New Hampshire in 1961. The Hills were among the first to offer a description of alien visitors in this way. The Hill’s case is perhaps the most well-known and well-researched abduction case. It is a notable place to begin research into alien abductions and there is a great deal of evidence that lends truth to the Hill’s claims; frozen time, reoccurring dreams, hypnotism and all.

The truth of it all is that there is so much out there to look through and so much to include in this discussion. There is plenty to bring up when making the case for extraterrestrial contact on Earth and it takes a certain interest in the subject to want to look further. There are truths being kept that still need to be found and understood.

Abduction cases, ancient marvels, UFO sightings and extraterrestrial encounters are happening everyday. It is simply human nature to take these into account and wonder, “Are we alone?” The next great frontier is always at the forefront of our endeavors and humans have been forging ahead at the top of the pyramid for a long time now. It is a natural wonder to feel that there is something out there watching us and waiting, slightly ahead of the curve for us to come around. The truth is out there and the evidence is here. Let human nature do its thing and find it.

How To Investigate a Flying Saucer

Southbound on a lone desert highway, police officer Lonnie Zamora was in pursuit of a speeding car outside the town of Socorro, New Mexico, when he was startled by a loud roar! Seconds later, he saw a large flame rise from the ground and pierce the sky above a remote patch of desert southwest of the highway. Fearing a nearby dynamite shack might have exploded, Zamora let the speeding car go, turned right, and drove down a bumpy gravel road that ran alongside the shack.

    image-768x635

Zamora’s cruiser clunked along the rocky road until he came upon a steep hill. Rising from behind the hill was a smokeless fire that glowed in a funnel of blue and orange tinted flames. The hill obscured the origin of the flames, so Zamora attempted to drive up it. His cruiser’s tires slipped and swayed on the loose gravel, but after three attempts, Zamora finally made it to the top.

A shiny object, the size of a sedan, sparkled in the late afternoon sunshine about 150-200 yards from where Zamora was perched on the hilltop. At first glance, he thought it was a car overturned in an arroyo (dry creek bed), but when he drove closer, it appeared to be aluminum in color, not chrome, and oval-shaped like a football.

Zamora drove toward the object, along the hill’s crest, for about 50 feet and then stopped the car. He radioed back to the sheriff’s office that he would be busy checking on a wreck “down in the arroyo,” and then he descended on foot down the hill toward the object.

Roooaaarrr! Zamora was startled again by a very loud rumble, not exactly like a blast but also not steady like a jet engine. It started at a low frequency, with the pitch slowly rising. The flame appeared to be coming from the underside of the object, glowing light blue on top and orange at the bottom. Zamora panicked, afraid the object was about to blow.

    image2-768x904

Zamora sprinted to his car, hit his leg on the fender, and crashed to the ground. He got up, ran another 25 feet or so, and when he looked back again, he saw the object begin to rise.He ran to take cover but turned back to look at the object as he fled. He noticed a red symbol on the side, shaped like a point that was about 2 inches high and 2 inches wide. The object was smooth, a shiny white aluminum, with no visible windows or doors. There appeared to be two metal legs, slanted outward, supporting it.

It rose to the level of the car, then higher, about 20 to 25 feet in the air.

Zamora ran another 50 feet from his car, just over the edge of the hill, and ducked. Kneeling as close to the ground as he could, he covered his face with his arms for protection. Suddenly, the roar stopped. In the uneasy silence, Zamora lifted his head and looked.

The object sped away from him, toward the southwest, appearing to go in a straight line at about 10-15 feet off the ground. It cleared the eight foot tall dynamite shack by about three feet and then continued in a southwesterly direction, until it went over the high desert mountains and disappeared…

Hector Quintanilla, the last chief officer of the US Air Force’s famous UFO investigation program, Project BLUE BOOK, was in charge of the Zamora case. His team was convinced that Zamora was telling the truth, and despite an extremely thorough investigation, they were unable to locate the object or its origins. In an article for Studies in Intelligence called, “The Investigation of UFO’s,” Quintanilla says that the Zamora sighting is “the best-documented case on record.” It remains unsolved.

Project BLUE BOOK was based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. Between 1947 and 1969, the Air Force recorded 12,618 sightings of strange phenomena — 701 of which remain “unidentified” like the Zamora case. Although the CIA was not directly affiliated with Project BLUE BOOK, the Agency did play a large role in investigating UFOs in the late 1940s and early 1950s, which led to the creation of several studies, panels, and programs. Former CIA Chief Historian, Gerald K. Haines, wrote an in-depth article looking at the Agency’s role in studying the UFO phenomenon for Studies in Intelligence. In his article, “CIA’s Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90,” Haines says that “while the Agency’s concern over UFOs was substantial until the early 1950s, CIA has since paid only limited and peripheral attention to the phenomena.”

With over 20 years of investigations, from the late 1940s until Project BLUE BOOK’s termination in 1969, the CIA and USAF have learned a thing or two about how to investigate a UFO sighting. While most government officials and scientists now dismiss flying saucer reports as a quaint relic of the 1950s and 1960s, there’s still a lot that can be learned from the history and methodology of “flying saucer intelligence.”

    image3

10 Tips When Investigating a Flying Saucer:

    1. Establish a Group To Investigate and Evaluate Sightings

Before December 1947, there was no specific organization tasked with the responsibility for investigating and evaluating UFO sightings. There were no standards on how to evaluate reports coming in, nor were there any measurable data points or results from controlled experiment for comparison against reported sightings.

To end the confusion, head of the Air Force Technical Service Command, General Nathan Twining, established Project SIGN (initially named Project SAUCER) in 1948 to collect, collate, evaluate, and distribute within the government all information relating to such sightings, on the premise that UFOs might be real (although not necessarily extraterrestrial) and of national security concern. Project SIGN eventually gave way to Project GRUDGE, which finally turned into Project BLUE BOOK in 1952.

    2. Determine the Objectives of Your Investigation

The CIA’s concern over UFOs was substantial until the early 1950s because of the potential threat to national security from these unidentified flying objects. Most officials did not believe the sightings were extraterrestrial in origin; they were instead concerned the UFOs might be new Soviet weapons.

The Project BLUE BOOK team, according to Quintanilla, defined three main objectives for their investigations:

    • To determine if UFO phenomena present a threat to the security of the US;
    • To determine if UFO phenomena exhibit any technological advances which could be channeled into US research and development; and
    • To explain or identify the stimuli which caused the observer to report a UFO.

Although BLUE BOOK, like previous investigative projects on the topic, did not rule out the possibility of extraterrestrial phenomena, their research and investigations focused primarily on national security implications, especially possible Soviet technological advancements.

    3. Consult With Experts

    image4

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, various projects, panels, and other studies were led or sponsored by the US government to research the UFO phenomenon. This includes the CIA-sponsored 1953 Scientific Advisory Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects, also known as the “Robertson Panel.” It was named after the noted physicist H.P. Robertson from the California Institute of Technology, who helped put together the distinguished panel of nonmilitary scientists to study the UFO issue.

Project BLUE BOOK also frequently consulted with outside experts, including: astrophysicists, Federal Aviation officials, pilots, the US Weather Bureau, local weather stations, academics, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, NASA, Kodak (for photo analysis), and various laboratories (for physical specimens). Even the famous astronomer Carl Sagan took part in a panel to review Project BLUE BOOK’s findings in the mid-1960s. The report from that panel concluded that “no UFO case which represented technological or scientific advances outside of a terrestrial framework” had been found, but the committee did recommend that UFOs be studied intensively to settle the issue once and for all.

    4. Create a Reporting System To Organize Incoming Cases

The US Air Force’s Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) developed questionnaires to be used when taking reports of possible UFO sightings, which were used throughout the duration of Project BLUE BOOK. The forms were used to provide the investigators enough information to determine what the unknown phenomenon most likely was. The duration of the sighting, the date, time, location, or position in the sky, weather conditions, and the manner of appearance or disappearance are essential clues for investigators evaluating reported UFO sightings.

    image5
According to Quintanilla, “a sighting is considered unidentified when a report apparently contains all the data necessary to suggest a valid hypothesis, but its description cannot be correlated with any known object or phenomenon.”Project BLUE BOOK categorized sightings according to what the team suspected they were attributable to: Astronomical (including bright stars, planets, comets, fireballs, meteors, and auroral streamers); Aircraft(propeller aircraft, jet aircraft, refueling missions, photo aircraft, advertising aircraft, helicopters); BalloonsSatellitesOther (including missiles, reflections, mirages, searchlights, birds, kites, spurious radar indications, hoaxes, fireworks, and flares); Insufficient Data; and finally, Unidentified.

    5. Eliminate False Positives

Eliminate each of the known and probable causes of UFO sightings, leaving a small portion of “unexplained” cases to focus on. By ruling out common explanations, investigators can focus on the truly mysterious cases.

Some common explanations for UFO sightings discovered by early investigations included: misidentified aircrafts (the U-2, A-12, and SR-71 flights accounted for more than half of all UFO reports from the late 1950s and most of the 1960s); celestial events; mass hysteria and hallucination; “war hysteria;” “midsummer madness;” hoaxes; publicity stunts; and the misinterpretation of known objects.

Even history can shed some light. An interesting citation found by the 1953 Robertson Panel noted that some sightings had been attributed to an older phenomenon – “Foo Fighters” – that pre-dated the modern concept of UFOs: “These were unexplained phenomena sighted by aircraft pilots during World War II in both European and Far East theaters of operation wherein ‘balls of light’ would fly near or with the aircraft and maneuver rapidly. They were believed to be electrostatic (similar to St. Elmo’s fire) or electromagnetic phenomena… but their exact cause or nature was never defined. If the term ‘flying saucers’ had been popular in 1943-1945, these objects would have been so labeled.”

    6. Develop Methodology To Identify Common Aircraft and Other Aerial Phenomena Often Mistaken for UFOs

Because of the significant likelihood a common (or secret military) aircraft could be mistaken for a UFO, it’s important to know the characteristics of different types of aircraft and aerial phenomenon to evaluate against each sighting. To help investigators go through the troves of reports coming in, Project BLUE BOOK developed a methodology to determine if the UFO sighting could likely be attributable to a known aircraft or aerial phenomenon. They wrote up detailed descriptions characterizing each type of aircraft or astronomical phenomenon, including how it might be mistaken for a UFO, to help investigators evaluate the incoming reports.

    7. Examine Witness Documentation

Any photographs, videos, or audio recordings can be immensely helpful in evaluating a reported UFO sighting.

    image6

A famous case examined by the Robertson Panel was the “Tremonton, Utah Sighting” of 1952, where a couple and two children traveling cross-country on State Highway 30 outside of Tremonton saw what appeared to be 10-12 bright shining objects moving westward in the sky in a rough formation. The husband was able to capture some of the objects on film.

The case was considered significant because of the “excellent documentary evidence in the form of Kodachrome motion picture films (about 1600 frames).” The Panel examined the film, case history, ATIC’s interpretation, and received a briefing from representatives of the USN Photo Interpretation Laboratory on their analysis of the film. The laboratory believed the objects were not birds, balloons, aircraft, or reflections, and therefore had to be “self-luminous.” The panel disagreed with the assessment that the objects were self-luminous, believing that if a controlled experiment was conducted, a terrestrial explanation for the sighting would be confirmed.

    8. Conduct Controlled Experiments

As suggested by the Robertson Panel for investigating the Tremonton, Utah sighting (mentioned in tip #7), controlled experiments might be required to try and replicate the unknown phenomena. In the Tremonton case, the Panel suggested an experiment where scientists would photograph “pillow balloons” at different distances under similar weather conditions at the site. They believed such an experiment could help dispel the “self-luminous” theory about the objects in the film. Unfortunately, in this case, the cost of conducting such an experiment made the idea unfeasible.

    9. Gather and Test Physical and Forensic Evidence

    image7

In the Zamora case (from the introduction), Quintanilla contends that during the course of the investigation and immediately thereafter, “everything that was humanly possible to verify was checked.” This included bringing in Geiger counters from Kirtland Air Force Base to test for radiation in the landing area and sending soil samples to the Air Force Materials Laboratory. “The soil analysis disclosed no foreign material. Radiation was normal for the ‘tracks’ and surrounding area. Laboratory analysis of the burned brush showed no chemicals that could have been propellant residue,” according to Quintanilla. “The findings were all together negative.” No known explanation could be found for the mysterious event.

    10. Discourage False Reporting

The Robertson Panel found that the Air Force had “instituted a fine channel for receiving reports of nearly anything anyone sees in the sky and fails to understand.” This is a classic example of needing to separate the “signal from the noise.” If you have too many false or junk reports, it becomes increasingly difficult to find the few good ones worthy of investigation or attention.

The CIA in the early 1950s was concerned that because of the tense Cold War situation and increased Soviet capabilities, the Soviets could use UFO reports to ignite mass panic and hysteria. Even worse, the Soviets could use UFO sightings to overload the US air warning system so that it could not distinguish real targets from supposed UFOs.

In order to lessen the amount of false-positive reports, the Robertson Panel suggested educating the military, researchers, and even the public on how to identify objects or phenomena commonly mistaken for UFOs. For example, they recommended training enlisted, command, and research personnel on how to properly recognize unusually illuminated objects (like balloons or aircraft reflections), as well as natural phenomena (such as meteors, fireballs, mirages, or noctilucent “night” clouds). By knowing how to correctly recognize objects that were commonly mistaken for UFOs, investigators could quickly eliminate false reports and focus on identifying those sightings which remained unexplained.

In 2013, I sent my first FOIA request for any information and documents pertaining to to the 1976 Tehran UFO incident. This event remains one of the most well-documented and fascinating UFO encounters ever reported by military pilots and witnesses. After receiving a response to my request, I wrote the following article to give everyone an idea of just exactly what I was able to pull from the documents I received, and testimony from several witnesses, including Major Parviz Jafari of the Iranian Air Force. I hope this will give you some insight into this deeply dramatic event.

    FOIA Request Answered!
It was approximately 12:30 am on September 19th, 1976, when the Imperial Iranian Air Force received a phone call at their main command post in the city of Tehran. A civilian from the city district of Sheridan reported seeing a large, bright light emanating in the night sky. The call made several connections and landed in the ear of General Yousefi, Assistant Deputy Commander of operations. His first reaction was to phone the Mehrabad International Airport to see if they had anything flying in that vicinity. They reported that they had nothing in the skies whatsoever. Yousefi then assumed that perhaps the civilian was seeing a bright star or even the planet, Venus, which was quite visible at that time of year. But when Yousefi went out to investigate the object himself, he had no trouble seeing it, and concluded that it was much too large and close to be a star or planet. This is when he made the decision to send a fighter jet into the air to intercept and investigate further.
Approximately 175 miles west of Tehran, an F-4 Phantom Fighter jet was deployed from Shahrokhi Air Force Base. Piloted by Captain Mohammad Reza Azizkhani, the jet made it’s way towards the object. Azizkhani reported that the object was of such brilliance that it could be seen from almost 70 miles away. Whatever it was, it was very, very large. At about 25 nautical miles from the object, Azizkhani’s instruments began to malfunction. Communication capabilities were also dropped. At this point, the confused and scared pilot had no choice but to abort the interception, heading back to base. As he distanced himself from the object, his instruments began to function once again, but he didn’t want to take any chances. He headed back to base to explain what had happened to his superiors.
In response to Azizkhani’s experience, a second F-4 jet was scrambled to see if it was merely the original plane that somehow malfunctioned, rather than having anything to do with the unknown object. Piloted by Lieutenant Parviz Jafari, he headed toward the object and was able to acquire a radar lock on it. Jafari would later report that the object’s radar signature was massive, comparable to that of a Boeing 707 aircraft. As he closed in on the object, it began to move. Clearly, it was aware of the interception occurring. Jafari tried to estimate the size of the object, but just like Azizkhani’s observation earlier, it was just too bright to make a fair estimate. Jafari, however, was able to make out different colored lights alternating in blinking succession. Blues, red, and orange were rapidly flashing all at once. Jafari continued south, tailing the object. That is when things got interesting.

Suddenly, a smaller object detached from the original, and began a quick advance towards Jafari’s F-4. Defense-mode kicked in as he believed this was an attack. Jafari attempted to launch an AIM-9 sidewinder missile at the object, but just like before, his instruments malfunctioned. All weapon and communication capabilities were lost. Jafari would later state that he even tried to eject from the aircraft at this point, but even that had malfunctioned. He quickly turned the F-4 and made a negative G dive. The smaller object dropped behind him and followed him for a moment, making it clear that it was now in control. Jafari nervously tried to outmaneuver the object to no avail. After a few nautical miles of cat and mouse, the smaller object would eventually break off and reunite with the larger object.

Jafari, having absolutely no idea what he was dealing with, retreated to assess the situation. The further he distanced himself from the object, his instruments and communications returned. He would relay that another object was soon detaching from the original. It made a rapid descent towards the ground. Jafari believed that at that speed, whatever it was would explode upon impact, but stated that whatever it was, it gently landed on a bed of rocks as Jafari severely decreased his altitude to personally witness this. Whatever it was, it landed near Rey Oil Refinery just on the outskirts of Iran, in the city of Mehrabad. Civilian airliners in the area also reported instrument failure in the same area where the object had landed.

Jafari, making one last attempt to investigate this extremely terrifying and extraordinary encounter, witnessed one more object, cylindrical in shape, buzzing in the area. Mehrabad International Airport was notified, and responded saying that they had no aircraft in flight at the time. However, flight tower personnel were able to corroborate Jafari’s sighting of this last object, stating that it even overflow the towers, all of their electrical equipment going down for a short period of time. Soon, this object made way back to the primary object, a large flash of light occurred, and it disappeared out of sight.

The following morning, the F-4 pilots went out, by helicopter, to gather any evidence of the smaller landed object. They determined that it has landed near a dry lake bed, but when they circled the area to survey, no visible evidence could be found. They did, however, receive a high amount of beeps from their helicopter meters, beeping most loudly as they approached a nearby house. They landed the helicopter and decided to question the residents to see if they had seen or experienced anything at the time of the incident. They didn’t have much to say, but did admit that a loud noise had occurred and bright light filled the area like a large burst of lightning. This would ultimately be the end of the investigation for Jafari and the other pilots, as they were specifically told to move on as if it had never occurred.

What Lies Beyond the Edge of the Observable Universe?

What Lies Beyond the Edge of the Observable Universe?

That’s a lot of universe that we are missing. So, what *exactly* are we missing? What lies beyond the edge of what we can’t see?

Roughly 13.75 billion years ago, our universe came into existence. Very shortly thereafter, primordial light started shooting across the cosmos and spreading throughout the early universe. At this juncture, the universe itself was also expanding. The inflation of the universe slowed after the first initial burst, but since then, the  rate of expansion has been steadily increasing due to the influence of dark energy.

Essentially, since its inception, the cosmos has been growing at an ever increasing rate. Cosmologists estimate that the oldest photons that we can observe have traveled a distance of 45-47 billion light years since the big bang. That means that our observable universe is some 93 billion light-years wide (give or take a few light years). These 93 some-odd billion light-years contain all of the quarks, quasars, stars, planets, nebulae, black holes…and everything else that we could possibly observe.

However, the observable universe only contains the light that has had time to reach us. A lot more universe exists beyond what we are able to observe.

But wait, how can the universe be 93 billion light-years across if it is only 13.8 billion years old? Light hasn’t had enough time to travel that far…?

Well, according to special relativity, objects that are close together cannot move faster than the speed of light with respect to one another; however, there is no such law for objects that are extremely distant from one another when the space between them is, itself, expanding. In short, it is not that objects are traveling faster than the speed of light, but that the space between objects is expanding, causing them to fly away from each other at amazing speeds.

According to the theory of cosmic inflation, the entire universe’s size is at least 10^23 times larger than the size of the observable universe.

    Ultra Deep Field via Hubble/NASA

    Ultra Deep Field via Hubble/NASA

That’s a lot of universe that we are missing. So, what *exactly* are we missing? What lies beyond the edge of what we can’t see?

Unfortunately, since we can’t see it or measure it, we don’t know what lies beyond the bounds of the observable universe. However, we have several theories regarding what exists in the great unknown…

Despite its strangeness, this first idea is one of the easiest to digest. Astronomers think space outside of the observable universe might be an infinite expanse of what we see in the cosmos around us, distributed pretty much the same as it is in the observable universe. This seems logical. After all, it doesn’t make sense that one section of the universe would be different than what we see around us. And honestly, who can envision a universe that has an end….a huge brick wall lurking at its edge?

So, in some ways, infinity makes sense. But “infinity” means that, beyond the observable universe, you won’t just find more planets and stars and other forms of material…you will eventually find every possible thing. Every. Possible. Thing.

That means that, if this holds true and we follow it to its logical conclusion, somewhere out there, there is another person who is identical to you in every possible way. And there is also a you who is only *slightly* different from you in every possible way. They may be reading this article right now; the only difference is that they just picked their nose while you didn’t (or did you?). This notion seems inconceivable. But then, infinity is rather inconceivable.

    Model of dakrflow

    Model of dark flow

Another theory deals with something called “dark flow.” In 2008, astronomers discovered something very strange and unexpected – galactic clusters were all streaming in the same direction at immense speed, over two million miles per hour. One possible cause: massive structures outside the observable universe exerting gravitational influence. As for the structures themselves, they could be literally anything: amazingly huge accumulations of matter and energy (on scales we can hardly imagine), or even bizarre warps in space-time that are funneling gravitational forces from other universes. We simply don’t know what these massive objects could be.

Recent analyses have claimed to debunk the dark flow model, but this debunking is still being disputed.

And some believe that the whole of our universe could exist in a small “bubble” in the midst of a vast array of other bubbles. Theorists call this a “multiverse.” Interestingly, the idea runs that these universes can come into contact with one another—gravity can flow between these parallel universes, and when they connect, a Big Bang like the one that created our universe may occur.

These idea are just a few of the more popular hypotheses. There are a lot more out there but, unfortunately, I don’t have the space necessary to detail all of them. Neither do I have the space to detail the ones I mentioned as in depth as I would like. So be sure to check the links for more information.

P.S.– Reread the last paragraph. Did you notice my pun?
    I hope so.

Five weird theories of what lies outside the universe

Five weird theories of what lies outside the universe

Physicists have long studied the nature of the universe. But some go a step further into the unknown (and probably unknowable), contemplating what lies outside the boundaries of our universe.

Is it possible that something else exists beyond existence? Yes. Here are five theories about what that “something” might be.

The “outside the universe” question gets tricky right off the bat, because first you have to define the universe. One common answer is called theobservable universe, and it’s defined by the speed of light. Since we can only see things when the light they emit or reflect reaches us, we can never see farther than the farthest distance light can travel in the time the universe has existed. That means the observable universe keeps getting bigger, but it is finite – the amount is sometimes referred to as the Hubble Volume, after the telescope that has given us our most distant views of the universe. We’ll never be able to see beyond that boundary, so for all intents and purposes, it’s the only universe we’ll ever interact with.

    Beyond the Hubble Volume.

We know with some certainty that there’s “more universe” out there beyond that boundary, though. Astronomers think space might be infinite, with “stuff” (energy, galaxies, etc.) distributed pretty much the same as it is in the observable universe. If it is, that has some seriously weird implications for what lies out there. Beyond the Hubble Volume you won’t just find more, different planets. You will eventually find every possible thing. Read that again and let it sink in. Everything. If you go far enough, you’ll find another solar system with an Earth identical in every way except that you had cereal for breakfast this morning instead of eggs. And another where you skipped breakfast. And one where you got up early and robbed a bank. In fact, cosmologists think that if you go far enough, you will find another Hubble Volume that is perfectly identical to ours. There’s another version of you out there mirroring your every action 10 to the 10^188 meters away. That may seem unlikely, but then, infinity is awfully infinite.

Five weird theories of what lies outside the universe

    Dark Flow.

In 2008, astronomers discovered something very strange and unexpected – galactic clusters were all streaming in the same direction at immense speed, over two million miles per hour. New observations in 2010 confirmed this phenomenon, known as Dark Flow. The movement defies all predictions about the distribution of mass throughout the universe after the Big Bang. One possible cause: massive structures outside the Hubble Volume exerting gravitational influence. This would mean that the structure of the infinite universe beyond our view is not uniform. As for the structures themselves, they could be literally anything, from aggregations of matter and energy on scales we can barely imagine to bizarre warps funneling gravitational forces from other universes.

    Infinite Bubbles.

Talking about things outside the Hubble Volume might be a bit of a cheat, since it’s still really the same universe, just a part of it we can’t see. It would have all the same physical laws and constants. In another version of the story, the post-Big Bang expansion of the universe caused “bubbles” to form in the structure of space. Each bubble is an area that stopped stretching along with the rest of space and formed its own universe, with its own laws. In this scenario, space is infinite, and each bubble is also infinite (because you can store an infinite number of infinities inside a single infinity). Even if you could somehow breach the boundary of our bubble, the space in between the bubbles is still expanding, so you’d never get to the next bubble no matter how fast you went.

Five weird theories of what lies outside the universe

    Black Hole Spawning.

A theory proposed by physicist Lee Smolin, known as the fecund universes theory, suggests that every black hole in our universe causes the formation of a new universe. Each universe will have slightly different physical laws than the forerunner universe. In this way, Smolin suggests a sort of natural selection for universes, as laws that lead to the frequent formation of black holes lead to the creation of more universes, while non-black hole forming universes “die out.” This theory has since been discounted (by Smolin himself and others).

    Many Parallel Universes.

There are tons of theories about parallel universes, but the most accepted one these days involves an evolution of the ideas of string theory to involve membranes that vibrate in other dimensions. It’s beyond the scope of this article to get too detailed about string or membrane theory, but the upshot of the whole thing is that these rippling membranes in the 11th dimension are whole other universes, and when the ripples slam into each other they form a new universe. The effects of the rippling motion help explain the observed distribution of matter in our universe. One of the weirdest elements of the theory is the idea that all the gravity we experience in our universe is actually leaking into it from another universe in another dimension (which explains why gravity here seems so weak compared to the other fundamental forces).

THE BOOK OF GIANTS FOUND AMID THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS AND THE DESTRUCTION OF THE NEPHILIM

More than 60 years ago, excavations at the Qumran Caves revealed almost one thousand ancient scrolls that offered important glimpses into humanity’s past.

Archaeologists were stumped to find one unusual text among these, a scroll that offers clues regarding the demise of the Nephilim. It is called The Book of Giants. The Bible makes several references to the Nephilim and most of them can be found in the book of Genesis.

The bulk of information pertaining to these giants of old come from the apocryphal Book of Enoch. This ancient Jewish religious work is attributed to Noah’s great-grandfather, although some scholars date parts of it to around 300 BC. Enoch is a puzzling character, to say the least.

The book of Genesis tells us he lived on Earth for 365 years, before being taken by God; “he walked with God: and he was no more; for God took him.” During his time down here, our planet was also inhabited by ‘angels’ who interacted freely with humans, eventually interbreeding with the “daughters of man” and giving birth to a race of unnaturally strong and giant hybrids called the Nephilim.

The origin of the word Nephilimisn’t fully understood but scholars have proposed several etymologies: “the fallen”, “apostates”, or those that cause others to fall down. Regardless of their name, the Nephilim have always been a synonym for giants.

The Book of Giants found in the Qumran Caves offer a perspective that is different from that of the Book of Enoch.

Although incomplete, the scroll fragments paint a grim picture: the Nephilim become aware that, as a result of their violent and deviant ways, they face imminent destruction—and that scares them enough to ask Enoch to speak on their behalf in front of God.

The text begins by detailing how the Nephilim plagued the Earth and all that lived on it. But once they all start receiving prophetic dreams of doom, fear seeps into their hearts.

The first one to have these dreams was Mahway, the titan son of the angel Barakel. In his dream, he saw a tablet being submerged in water. When the tabled emerges, all but three names have been washed away. This symbolizes the Flood and subsequent destruction of all but Noah’s sons.

At the time, this fact had not become obvious to the Nephilim so they debated the meaning of Mahway’s dream, but were unsuccessful in interpreting the signs.

Soon after, two more giants, Ohya and Hahya, the sons of the fallen angel Shemyaza, begin having similar dreams; they dreamed of a tree being uprooted except for three of its roots.

Following this, the rest of the group of giants began having apocalyptic dreams: Thereupon two of them had dreams and the sleep of their eye fled from them, and they arose and came to […and told] their dreams, and said in the assembly of [their comrades] the monsters […In] my dream I was watching this very night [and there was a garden…] gardeners and they were watering […two hundred trees and] large shoots came out of their root […] all the water, and the fire burned all [the garden…] They found the giants to tell them the dream…” The giants now realize the prophetic nature of their dreams and seek help from Enoch. Unfortunately, Enoch had already disappeared from the face of the Earth so the Nephilim elected one of their members to undertake a cosmic journey in order to find him. [Mahway] mounted up in the air like strong winds, and flew with his hands like eagles […he left behind] the inhabited world and passed over Desolation, the great desert […]and Enoch saw him and hailed him, and Mahway said to him […] hither and thither a second time to Mahway […]The giants await your words, and all the monsters of the earth. If […]has been carried […] from the days of […]their […] and they would be added […] we would know from you their meaning […] two hundred trees that from heaven came down…”

Unfortunately, parts of the scrolls were damaged beyond repair but the general direction of the text is obvious.

One of the Nephilim traveled outside of Earth in search of Enoch and his vision interpreting powers. The text becomes very interesting if we substitute a few terms and regard it not as an allegorical account, but the description of a real event whose meaning became muddled over time.

If we consider flying “with his hands like eagles a metaphor, can we hypothesize that Mahway took off from Earth in a space ship?

In this case, does Desolation, the great desert refer to interstellar space?

It depends on how far we’re willing to interpret a fragmentary, 2,000 year-old scroll but ancient alien theorists do more than just take it at face value.

Enoch sends Mahway back where he came from, promising him he will speak to God on their behalf.

Unfortunately for the Nephilim, the tablets Enoch sent them as a response did not bring good news: The scribe Enoch […] a copy of the second tablet that [Enoch] sent in the very hand of Enoch the noted scribe […In the name of God the great] and holy one, to Shemyaza and all [his companions…] Let it be known to you that not […] and the things you have done, and that your wives […] they and their sons and the wives of [their sons] by your licentiousness on the earth, and there has been upon you […and the land is crying out] and complaining about you and the deeds of your children […] the harm that you have done to it. […] Until Raphael arrives, behold, destruction [is coming, a great flood, and it will destroy all living things] and whatever is in the deserts and the seas. And the meaning of the matter […] upon you for evil. But now, loosen the bonds bi[nding you to evil…] and pray.”

Whether they prayed or not, the text cannot say. But they don’t appear to be here anymore, once again proving the effectiveness of a global flood.

    Famous UFO cases: Nazi UFOs

Nazi UFO (German: Rundflugzeug, Feuerball, Diskus, Haunebu, Hauneburg-Geräte, VRIL, Kugelblitz, Andromeda-Geräte, Flugkreisel, Kugelwaffen or ironically Reichsflugscheiben) refers to claims of advanced aircraft or spacecraft Nazi Germany attempted to develop prior to and during World War II. Some believe that ex-Nazi or possibly American scientists continue to develop new flying saucers in secret underground bunkers in the New Swabia region of Antarctica, South America or the United States. The probably fictional craft appear in science fiction, conspiracy theory, and underground comic books, although there are more than a few documentaries on the subject available through video sharing services.

While there is no credible evidence to support the theory of Nazi spacecraft, the stories are often associated with esoteric Nazism; an ideology that supposes the unlikely possibility of Nazi restoration by supernatural or paranormal means. Consequently all but the most plausible accounts of actual spacecraft are generally held to be religious, political and scientific heresy.

These accounts were likely inspired by historical German development of specialized engines such as Viktor Schauberger’s “Repulsine” around the time of WWII. (right photo: Viktor Schauberger)
    Context
Nazi UFO tales and myths very often conform largely to documented history on the following points:
        * Nazi Germany claimed the territory of New Swabia in Antarctica, sent an expedition there in 1938, and planned others.
        * Nazi Germany conducted research into advanced propulsion technology, including rocketry, Viktor Schauberger’s engine research[citation needed], flying wing craft and the Arthur Sack A.S.6 experimental “flying disc”.
        * Some UFO sightings during World War II, particularly those known as foo fighters, were discovered to be prototype enemy aircraft designed to harass Allied aircraft through electromagnetic disruption; a technology similar to today’s electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons.
    Early claims
The earliest non-fiction assertion of Nazi flying saucers appears to have been an article which appeared in the Italian newspaper Il Giornale d’Italia in early 1950. Written by Professor Giuseppe Belluzzo, an Italian scientist and a former Italian Minister of National Economy under the Mussolini regime, it claimed that “types of flying discs were designed and studied in Germany and Italy as early as 1942”. Belluzzo also expressed the opinion that “some great power is launching discs to study them”.
The same month, German engineer Rudolf Schriever gave an interview to German news magazine Der Spiegel in which he claimed that he had designed a craft powered by a circular plane of rotating turbine blades 49 ft (15 m) in diameter (left picture – click to enlarge). He said that the project had been developed by him and his team at BMW’s Prague works until April 1945, when he fled Czechoslovakia. His designs for the disk and a model were stolen from his workshop in Bremerhaven-Lehe in 1948 and he was convinced that Czech agents had built his craft for “a foreign power”. In a separate interview with Der Spiegel in October 1952 he said that the plans were stolen from a farm he was hiding in near Regen on 14 May 1945. There are other discrepancies between the two interviews that add to the confusion.
In 1953, when Avro Canada announced that it was developing the VZ-9-AV Avrocar, a circular jet aircraft with an estimated speed of 1,500 mph (2,400 km/h), German engineer Georg Klein claimed that such designs had been developed during the Third Reich. Klein identified two types of supposed German flying disks:
        * A non-rotating disk developed at Breslau by V-2 rocket engineer Richard Miethe, which was captured by the Soviets, while Miethe fled to the US via France, and ended up working for Avro.
        * A disk developed by Rudolf Schriever and Klaus Habermohl at Prague, which consisted of a ring of moving turbine blades around a fixed cockpit. Klein claimed that he had witnessed this craft’s first manned flight on 14 February 1945, when it managed to climb to 12,400 m (41,000 ft) in 3 minutes and attained a speed of 2,200 km/h (1,400 mph) in level flight.
Aeronautical engineer Roy Fedden remarked that the only craft that could approach the capabilities attributed to flying saucers were those being designed by the Germans towards the end of the war. Fedden (who was also chief of the technical mission to Germany for the Ministry of Aircraft Production) stated in 1945:
“I have seen enough of their designs and production plans to realize that if they (the Germans) had managed to prolong the war some months longer, we would have been confronted with a set of entirely new and deadly developments in air warfare.”
Fedden also added that the Germans were working on a number of very unusual aeronautical projects, though he did not elaborate upon his statement.
In 1959, Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, editor of the U.S.A.F.’s Project Blue Book wrote:
“When WWII ended, the Germans had several radical types of aircraft and guided missiles under development. The majority were in the most preliminary stages, but they were the only known craft that could even approach the performance of objects reported to UFO observers.”
    Later claims
    Morning of the Magicians
Main article: Le Matin des Magiciens

Le Matin des Magiciens, a 1967 book by Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier, made many spectacular claims about the Vril Society of Berlin.(left: Vril Society logo). Several years later writers, including Jan van Helsing, Norbert-Jürgen Ratthofer, and Vladimir Terziski, have built on their work, connecting the Vril Society with UFOs. Among their claims, they imply that the society may have made contact with an alien race and dedicated itself to creating spacecraft to reach the aliens. In partnership with the Thule Society and the Nazi Party, the Vril Society developed a series of flying disc prototypes. With the Nazi defeat, the society allegedly retreated to a base in Antarctica and vanished.

Terziski, a Bulgarian engineer who bills himself as president of the American Academy of Dissident Sciences, claims that the Germans collaborated in their advanced craft research with Axis powers Italy and Japan, and continued their space effort after the war from a base in New Swabia. He alleges that Germans may have landed on the Moon as early as 1942 and established an underground base there. Terziski relates that when Russians and Americans secretly landed on the moon in the 1950s they stayed at this still-operating base. According to Terziski, “there is atmosphere, water and vegetation on the Moon,” which NASA conceals to exclude the third world from moon exploration. Terziski has been accused of fabricating his video and photographic evidence.
    Ernst Zündel’s marketing ploy
    Main article: Zündel: Nazi UFOs-Antarctica
When German Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel started Samisdat Publishers in the 1970s, he initially catered to the UFOlogy community, which was then at its peak of public acceptance. His books claimed that flying saucers were Nazi secret weapons launched from an underground base in Antarctica, from which the Nazis hoped to conquer the world and possibly the planets. Zündel also sold (for $9999) seats on an exploration team to locate the polar entrance to the hollow earth. Some who interviewed Zündel claim that he privately admitted it was a deliberate hoax to build publicity for Samisdat, although he still defended it as late as 2002.
    Miguel Serrano’s book
In 1978 Miguel Serrano, a Chilean diplomat and Nazi sympathizer, published The Golden Band, in which he claimed that Adolf Hitler was an avatar of Vishnu and was at that time communing with Hyperborean gods in an underground Antarctic base in New Swabia. Serrano predicted that Hitler would lead a fleet of UFOs from the base to establish the Fourth Reich. In popular culture, this alleged UFO fleet is referred to as the Nazi flying saucers from Antarctica.

Nazi Saucers & the UFO Conspiracy

Flying saucers and the Third reich

Hitler and the Third Reich led Europe into a decade of terror in the first half of the 20th century that culminated in World War II. Technology played a greater part in that war than in past conflicts and the Germans developed an amazing array of secret weapons in a short time. Were flying discs part of the Luftwaffe arsenal? And if so, was this secret looted and used by the Allied victors after the war?
More than any war before it, World War II was the war of secret weapons. A few of these advances, like the American atomic bomb and the British ability to crack the German communication ciphers may have actually tipped the outcome of the conflict. The Axis powers also had their secrets and many of the most clandestine German war-time technical advances are now well known.

    German Secret Weapons

Hitler’s forces flew the first military jet, the German Heinkel 178, in 1939. In 1943 the Germans also deployed the only jet fighter to go into regular service during the war: The Messerschmitt 262. This ME-262 could easily overtake the fastest Allied aircraft and only Hitler’s misguided orders that the planes be outfitted as bombers instead of defensive fighters saved Allied aircraft from devastating casualties.
Cruise missiles, a staple of current advanced arsenals, were also first used by the Third Reich during the war. V-1 flying bombs were launched from German-held territories across the channel into England. The “buzz bombs,” as they were sometimes called because of the sound of their impulse jet engines, could outrun most Allied aircraft, making the V-1’s almost impossible to stop. The V-1’s weakness was its guidance system (a problem solved in modern cruise missiles by the use of computer-controlled radar). Because it couldn’t hit a pinpoint target, the V-1 could only be used to cause random terror and not zero in on truly important military assets.
The German V-2 rocket was the predecessor of the intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that filled the nuclear arsenals of the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War. It traveled up to 225 miles at five times the speed of sound and a single hit could demolish a city block. During the war, the V-2 killed 2724 civilians and injured another 6467. Like the V-1, though, it lacked a guidance system that would have allowed it to effectively strike at important targets.
Hitler’s engineers even developed a rocket-powered fighter, the ME 163. Though it never was put into regular service, it was the first aircraft to fly faster than 600 miles an hour.
After the war, rumors surfaced that the Nazis had one more secret weapon that was still hidden: flying disc-shaped aircraft. According to these stories, some of the victorious Allied nations had plundered the German laboratories where these aircraft were being developed and secret testing of these devices explained many of the reports of flying saucers that appeared in the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950’s.

    German Flying Discs

Many of the reports of Nazi flying saucers can be traced back to a book entitled German Secret Weapons of World War II written by Rudolf Lusar in the late 1950’s. Lusar had been a major in a German army technical unit during the war. His book covered many of the acknowledged advances like the V1 and V2, but also included a chapter on “Wonder Weapons.”
According to Lusar, a German aircraft designer named Rudolf Schriever, along with other engineers Habermohl, Mierth and Bellanzo (who was Italian), were working on several disc-shaped aircraft toward the end of the war. At a facility near Breslau, Poland, a group headed by Miethe constructed a prototype of a circular air vehicle 137 feet in diameter with an elongated hump on top for the cockpit. The aircraft was to be powered with “adjustable jet engines.” In Lusar’s account, the device was destroyed when the plant where it was being constructed was blown up by retreating German troops before it could be overrun by the Soviets in 1945.
At a second location just outside Prague, Czechoslovakia, according to Lusar, another group headed by Schriever and Habermohl were working on an additional disc aircraft. Diagrams included in the book show a central egg-shaped control pod surrounded by a nearly flat disc. The flat disc appears to be composed of fan blades that rotate to create lift. Ports on the lower part of the pod appear to be connected to jet engines that provide the forward propulsion.
Lusar states that the Schriever machine was tested in 1945 and supposedly reached an altitude of 12 kilometers (39,000 feet) in a little over three minutes. He continues by saying it had a top speed of 2000 kilometer an hour (1,200mph) – substantially faster than the speed of sound.
These claims seem somewhat incredible. According to conventional history, the first aircraft to break the sound barrier the X-1, an American rocket-powered plane in 1947. It seems unlikely that Schriever’s group would have been able to make such a drastic leap in performance so early and so quickly. In addition, comments from Schriever himself, who relocated to the United States after the war, indicate that any prototypes of the craft were destroyed before flight test as the Germans abandoned their facilities in the face of advancing Allied troops.

    Foo Fighters

According to Lusar, the Germans’ had also developed small automated, unconventional aircraft. One version was called the Feuerball while another, capable of vertical takeoff, was referred to as the Kugelblitz. According to stories, these craft were only armed with devices designed to guide them to allied aircraft and interfere with their electronics and engines.
The Feuerball and Kugelblitz stories seem to parallel tales of “foo-fighters” told by Allied pilots during the war. Despite this, it seems unlikely that Feuerballs and Kugelblitzs were ever actually built or flown. The “foo-fighters” observed were probably some purely natural phenomena (right photo). No Allied plane ever reported being attacked or disabled by a foo-fighter and it is likely that if the Germans had invented a device capable of tracking planes as well as the foo-fighters apparently did, they would have soon armed it with more effective weapons.

    The “Legend”

Nick Cook, a respected aviation journalist for Jane’s Defense Weekly Nick looked into the claims for German flying discs in his 2001 book The Hunt for Zero Point. Cook became interested in unconventional aircraft after seeing some articles written in the 1950’s that quoted respected experts of the era, like Lawrence D. Bell (whose company designed the supersonic X-1) predicting that the next major breakthrough in aviation could be anti-gravity devices. His research led him to Lusar’s book and the stories of German flying saucers.
Cook was perhaps one of the few aviation writers that was willing to take the “Legend” of German flying saucers seriously. While researching his book he visited many of the locations mentioned in German Secret Weapons of World War II. He also connected the stories of the German saucer designers to the work of a man named Victor Schauberger.

    Victor Schauberger

Schauberger was born in Austria in 1885 and was considered by many to be a crackpot. Schauberger himself is quoted as saying, “They call me deranged. The hope is they are right…” While his professional training was as a “forester,” Cook, after visiting the Schauberger’s grandson and examining his papers and the machinery he had constructed, concluded that Schauberger was actually more of an engineer. Schauberger believed that machines could be designed better so that they would be “going with the flow of nature” rather than against it.
One of Schauberger’s projects was to produce a flying machine, saucer shaped, that used a “vortex propulsion” system. His theory was that “if water or air is rotated into a twisting form of oscillation, known as a ‘colloidal,’ a build-up of energy results, which, with immense power, can cause levitation.”
According to some accounts, Schauberger built several models, one of which was almost five feet in diameter and was powered by a 1/20 hp electric engine. Some reports indicated that one of the models actually flew. In an echo of the story of the Schriever disc, Schauberger wrote to a friend that a full-sized prototype of one of his designs was constructed using prison labor at the Mauhausen concentration camp. This craft flew on February 19th of 1945 near Prague and obtained an altitude of 45,000 feet in only 3 minutes. The letter goes on to say the prototype was destroyed by the Nazis before it could be captured by the Allies.
After the war Schauberger moved to the United States, where some contend he worked on secret projects for the U.S. government. He died in 1958, apparently claiming his ideas had been stolen.
Cook concluded that if the stories about Schauberger’s work were true, his devices must have created an anti-gravity effect. Cook even visited a location in the remote Sudeten Mountains in Poland where antigravity experiments were supposed to have taken place using a bell-shaped device that glowed a pale blue when operating.

    Advantages of Disc Aircraft

The “Legend” of German flying saucers is fascinating, but is any of it true? It certainly seems likely that there was some experimentation with the concept within the Reich, as there was in the United States. Disc-shaped aircraft have several advantages, including low stall speed and low drag, even at high speeds. The rounded shape can also lower the craft’s radar profile making it “stealthy.”
The low stall/drag of the shape would have been particularly interesting to the Germans at the end of the war. Months of bombing had reduced German runways to rubble. A saucer-shaped craft might have been able to lift off the ground with a short runway or even do a vertical-takeoff-and -landing with no runway at all.
In his book Cook concludes that Nazis flying saucer technology was appropriated by the United States and the Soviet Union at the end of the war. This suggestion is not wholly without merit, since it is now clear that US and USSR rocketry development in the 50’s and 60’s owed a lot to German scientists. These engineers, quietly brought into the United States via operation “Paperclip,” assisted the United States in its space program and its Cold War struggle against the Soviet Union. Similarly, according to author Jim Wilson in an article in Popular Mechanics in July 1997, there are records that suggest at least two people, brothers named Walter and Reimar Horten, were sought by the United States after the war because of their participation in German military saucer programs.

    UFOs and Antigravity Myths

It is clear that at least some of the Nazi saucer lore developed after the war, rather than during it. In his book, UFOs: Nazi Secret Weapons? author Ernst Zundel claims that Hitler escaped at the end of the war to establish a flying saucer base in Antarctica. Zundel’s tale is connected with the discredited idea that the earth is hollow and the interior can be accessed from the polar regions. As colorful as such stories are, they are so far afield from reality that they can’t be taken seriously.
In contrast, Cook’s assertion in The Hunt for Zero Point that antigravity technology was spirited out of Germany at the end of the war doesn’t seem all that far-fetched. It is difficult to believe, however, that such advanced knowledge, if it really worked, would not have shown up in the intervening 60 years in U.S. military equipment or through the NASA space program. The ability to shield an object from gravity, if it could be done, would greatly decrease the cost and difficulty of putting objects into space.

    Warning Space Aliens: Earth

It seems like every day, a video or image emerges that appears to show a UFO near the International Space Station. And it generally -- OK, always -- turns out not to be a UFO. It's normally space debris, light reflections from the station windows, an antenna attached to the station, etc.

But wouldn't it be interesting if someone actually launched a satellite into Earth orbit (illustrated above), with the specific mission of trying to detect and prove unknown objects are actually out there?

Get ready for CubeSat for Disclosure, a team of researchers brought together by software engineer Dave Cote, who have a common purpose in launching their own satellite: To find and verify a real extraterrestrial craft.

"We have former astronauts, military personnel, police officers and the former defense minister of Canada come forward stating that extraterrestrial UFOs are real, and that we are being visited," Cote said in a press release. "How can this be ignored and brushed off as nonsense?"

On the following CubeSat for Disclosure video, Cote says his project "aims to use a low-orbit satellite controlled by us, the individuals, to study potential objects in our Earth's atmosphere."
"Maybe we'll get data readings and pictures of solar flared-caused auroras; maybe we'll capture images of some very interesting meteors; and maybe, we'll actually capture a verifiable craft. All we can do is try, and by doing this our way, we can open-source the data to you, the individuals," said Cote.

Current technology allows private citizens to build small, relatively affordable satellites, launch them into Earth orbit and perform various experiments. CubeSats are about the size of a shoebox, into which a variety of scientific equipment can be placed.

These nano-satellites can reach a height of around 195 miles above Earth for around $20,000, and have orbital lifespans of about three months before they burn up on re-entry.

For its UFO hunt, the CubeSat for Disclosure team will load the little satellite with infrared, electromagnetic and radiation sensors, as well as two cameras set to photograph a full 360 degrees.

"We control what the images are. We will have the images," said project coordinator Dave Shock. "If you're watching a live feed from the International Space Station, it can suddenly cut out and they'll say, 'Oh, we lost the signal.' But we will have total control of everything. Nobody will alter or corrupt our data so that the government can't cover up what we may find. This is all ours," Shock told The Huffington Post.

CubeSat for Disclosure doesn't have a launch date yet, and they're raising money to pack as much instrumentation into the satellite as possible.

"We're using the air and space port, Interorbital Systems, out of the Mojave Desert," Shock said. "We got the satellite through them and they'll do the launch. It's a whole package: You buy the satellite, you also get the launch. The more money we get, the more scientific equipment we can pack on board."

MOON CONSPIRACY MOVIE WAS MADE BY DUPING NASA INTO THINKING IT WAS A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE APOLLO PROGRAM

Quick, what’s your favorite conspiracy theory? Unless you’re partial to Reptoid Aliens Living Under Denver International Airport, it’s probably Faked Moon Landing. And why shouldn’t it be? It’s got everything necessary to be a late-night talk radio/dorm room smoke session favorite: A super-secret government organization (probably the CIA) enlists a filmmaker (possibly Stanley Kubrick) to fake footage of US astronauts on the moon. Matt Johnson milks this preposterous idea for drama and laughs in Operation Avalanche, which opened at Sundance last week.

The story focuses on a group of ambitious young CIA agents who infiltrate NASA under the guise of a documentary crew in order to uncover a Russian mole. Upon learning that NASA is about to blow the deadline for a putting a man on the moon, they get a new mission: Fabricate the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Yes, Stanley Kubrick gets involved. And yes, they find themselves in over their heads

But here’s the best part: That storyline isn’t just the plot—it’s how Johnson actually made the movie.

“We called NASA and said, ‘Hey we’re making documentary about the Apollo program, can we come shoot it there?’ And they said, yes,” Johnson, who wrote, directed, and starred in the film, said during a Q&A after a screening last week. “So all those scenes where you see me saying, ‘Oh we’re just making a documentary’ or introducing myself as a documentary filmmaker? That’s real.”

As soon as we knew the door had a crack in it we were like, 'Oh wicked! We're going to make the most illegal movie ever.' Director Matt Johnson

For many scenes, the crew got just one take—you can’t really ask people to do or say things twice—and had to work without a script for obvious reasons. They also had to figure out how to legally clear the footage shot under false pretenses and the images of Kubrick that appear in the film. In the end, they used a loophole: The copyright-skirting legal concept known as fair use.

There is a really great fair use [argument] if you are trying to make a story about something specific and you need the locations that you’re shooting in for that story,” Johnson says. “Because fair use, especially in the United States, and property law is changing so quickly, you’re able to make films like this. That’s something we started to discover on our first film The Dirties, but as soon as we knew the door had a crack in it we were like, ‘Oh wicked! We’re going to make the most illegal movie ever.'”

Thankfully, Operation Avalanche has more going for it than its questionable legality. (It’s not that questionable; Johnson actually shouted out the film’s lawyer following its Sundance screening.) Set against the backdrop of the Cold War in 1967, it’s by turns a buddy comedy, a thriller, a conspiracy theory film, and—thanks to a gnarly car chase—an action movie. It starts out like a Christopher Guest film, winds its way through Oliver Stone’s JFK and/or Wag the Dog, and eventually becomes Enemy of the State.

Soon you’ll get to know exactly what we mean; Operation Avalanche should hit theaters later this year. Lionsgate snapped up the film months ago, and already has a distribution plan. In the meantime, fire up Room 237 and start polishing your tin-foil hat

The Truth Is Out There: CIA Publishes UFO Investigation Tips
High-flying spy planes such as the U-2, seen here, likely spurred many reported UFO sightings over the years, CIA officials have said.

In 1947, New Mexico police officer Lonnie Zamora was chasing a speeding car when he heard a loud noise. He saw a flame shoot up in a nearby patch of desert and went over to investigate, thinking a dynamite shack in the area might have exploded.

What Zamora reported is still under intense dispute decades later. He says he saw a sedan-size, shiny object on a hilltop. Once he got closer on foot, the object began making loud noises. Zamora backed away but saw the UFO rise into the sky and speed away until it disappeared.

The UFO sighting — which is still unexplained despite investigators' belief that Zamora told the truth — was investigated by the United States Air Force as a part of Project BLUE BOOK, which recorded 12,618 sightings of strange objects between 1947 and 1969. The Central Intelligence Agency also assisted in analyzing the sightings. [Where to Spot UFOs (Infographic)]

Below are the tips that the CIA learned from "flying saucer intelligence," as the agency highlighted in a recent blog post. Helpfully, the CIA also published a list of UFO cases that Fox Mulder and Dana Scully — the heroes of the recently revived "X-Files" TV series — would enjoy.

    1. Create a group to find and evaluate the sightings. After the 1947 incident, Project SAUCER was established to obtain all possible information about these sightings. (The premise was that the sightings were not necessarily UFOs, but could be foreign craft.) The group was renamed Project SIGN and then Project BLUE BOOK.
    2. Figure out your investigation's goals. Project BLUE BOOK aimed to find out if UFOs were a threat to U.S. security, determine if UFOs have technology that could be used by the U.S., and explain which stimuli cause a person to report a UFO.
    3. Consult with experts. Project BLUE BOOK's outside experts included astrophysicists, federal aviation officials, pilots, academics, and people at the U.S. Weather Bureau, local weather stations, the National Center for Atmospheric Research and NASA, among other organizations.
    4. Organize cases in a reporting system. BLUE BOOK's categories included astronomical, aircraft, balloons, satellites, other (such as reflections or mirages), insufficient data and unidentified.
    5. Eliminate false positives. Examples included misidentified aircraft (particularly the U-2, A-12 and SR-71 spy planes), hoaxes and mass hysteria.
    6. Develop methodology to identify common aircraft (or other phenomena) the public mistook as UFOs.
    7. Examine witness documentation.
    8. Conduct controlled experiments, such as photographing certain types of balloons from different distances under similar weather conditions.
    9. Gather and test physical and forensic evidence. The Zamora investigation included using Geiger counters to look for radiation, and sending soil samples off for expert analysis.
    10. Discourage false reporting. In the 1950s, during the Cold War, there were concerns the Soviet Union could deploy fake "UFOs" to incite panic in the U.S. So officials countered that by teaching the public how to look for similar phenomena, such as astronomical objects (meteors) or illuminated objects (balloons).

Yetis, UFOs And The Still-Unvolved Death Of 9 Russian Hikers

The mysterious Dyatlov Pass Incident continues to stymie and fascinate conspiracy theorists, 57 years later

    By

    AYeti AFP/Getty Images

On January 27th, 1959, nine cross-country skiers from Russia’s Ural Polytechnical Institute set out on a hike from Vizhai in the northern province of Sverdlovsk Oblast to Otorten—a name that means “Don’t go there” in the language of the Mansi people indigenous to the area.

On February 1st—57 years ago today—the group moved through a mountain pass near Kholat Syakhl, where a snowstorm picked up and forced the group off their intended path. With temperatures well below zero degrees, the group decided to set up camp on the mountain’s slope, hoping to outlast the storm.

The hikers never reached Otorten. Rescue teams found no trace of the expedition until February 26th, when a band of volunteer searchers found the group’s tent in the snow, collapsed, crumpled, and slit open with razor blades. Five of the bodies were found nearby with the aid of footprints, but the remaining four members of the expedition were nowhere to be found for months.

Finally, on May 4th, over three months after their disappearance, the final four bodies were found, buried under some 10 feet of snow in a ravine well beyond where any of the other bodies were found.

The disappearance of the hikers has become known as the Dyatlov Pass Incident, named after Igor Dyatlov, the 23-year-old leader of the expedition. The details uncovered after an investigation of the area and the autopsies of the bodies resulted in more questions than answers.

Most of the group’s equipment and clothes were still inside the tent when rescuers found it. Some of the hikers were found wearing each others’ clothes; others were found in only their underwear. The footprints found near the site were made by people with either bare feet, socks, or one single shoe. Two of the hikers had suffered head injuries, and one woman was found without her tongue. Forensic radiation tests found alpha radiation on the group’s clothes.

The secretive nature of the official reports only added to the mystery. Some of the injuries were caused by blunt force trauma well beyond what a human attacker would be capable of generating—one Soviet doctor compared it to a car crash. The official cause of death was suspiciously noted as a “compelling unknown force.” But without evidence of foul play, the inquest was closed less than a month after the final bodies were found, and the files were made classified until after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1989.

Further details from witnesses only complicated things further. One witness at the funeral of the deceased hikers noted the bodies had a “strange brown tan”and grayed hair. Another group of hikers near the same area reported seeing “bright orange spheres” to the north, in the general vicinity of the Dyatlov group.

Nine people rushing out of their tent and into sub-zero temperatures and certain death was suspicious enough. The combination of their gruesome injuries, the mystery of the remote mountain range, the unexplained radiation and objects in the sky, and the secrecy of the Soviet investigation have made the Dyatlov Pass Incident the ultimate in imagination fuel. Wild speculation on what really happened has come from scientists, documentarians, and even wild eyed YouTube conspiracy theory channel hosts.

UFO theorists have latched onto the mysterious “orange spheres” to suggest the hikers were attacked by aliens. The “compelling unknown force,” in this theory, could be an alien superweapon.

“It’s not a coincidence that UFOs were reported by these hikers in the Ural mountains, in the place of the dead, ‘don’t go there,’ and so on,” Philip Imbrogno, a “ufologist,” said on History Channel’s Ancient Aliens. “I believe that many UFO sightings come in here from a parallel reality and they come from portals. This area may be a hot portal.”

“The orbs themselves could have been a life form, the orbs themselves could have been extraterrestrial probes,” Bill Birnes, another of History Channel’s ufologists, said. “It could have been inadvertent. The orbs, in probing the area where the humans were, created collateral damage. Maybe they didn’t mean to harm human beings, maybe it wasn’t an attack as much as the power of the orbs, the energy, was so intense the humans were prematurely aged, irradiated, and suffered all kinds of lethal biological symptoms.”

Lately, though, another supernatural theory has risen to prominence, albeit one originating from our own world. The frozen wastelands of Russia have long been of interest to Yeti enthusiasts.

So much so that the Kemerovo region of Siberia arranged a sham scientific conference in 2011, complete with academic experts and researchers flown in from America to boost the event’s credibility. The region stated on its website that evidence of “footprints, a probable den and various markers that Yetis mark their territory with” led scientists to state they were “95 percent sure” Yetis do exist.

Dr. Jeff Meldrum, one of the American researchers flown in by the Keremovans, said he felt the whole thing was “orchestrated” and purely “publicity stunts.” But that hasn’t stopped the theories.

In 2014, Discovery Channel produced a documentary titled Russian Yeti: The Killer Lives, a two-hour program presenting evidence that not aliens but the Yeti was responsible for the deaths of Dyatlov and his hiking crew. Quoth the channel of discovery: “Following the trail of evidence, [Director] Mike [Lebecki] finds proof that the hikers were not alone—a photograph, taken by one of the hikers a day before they died that suggests that they encountered a Yeti.  But just how far will they go to find the answers?”

Lebecki went so far as to arrange a nighttime stay in the very same Yeti cave Meldrum toured in 2011. He also found a Mansi woman to tell a story of a legendary creature called the “Menk,” conveniently a six-to-nine foot tall biped that has been known to steal people’s tongues.

For his proof, Lebecki cites an anonymous YouTube video in which a grainy dark blob is visible, the same kind of “proof” offered for Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster for decades. For his coup de grace, he presents one of the pictures found on a camera recovered from the campsite in 1959. “It shows a strange tall creature, lurking in the woods, looking over towards where the students must have been. But what is it?”

Lebecki also cites an entry in the newspaper log the hikers were keeping of the trip, which cryptically states, “From now on we know that the snowmen exist.” But this is either a naive or intentionally deceptive reading of what was a largely joking diary the students were keeping of their journey. The full passage says, “They can be met in the Northern Urals, next to Ortoten mountain,” and it was likely a self-referential joke rather than proof of their Yeti suspicions.

Others suggest the explanation is not supernatural at all, but perhaps even more insidious: The students stumbled upon a military testing area and were either killed by Soviet soldiers protecting the area or were scared into fleeing by the sounds of nearby explosions, as suggested by British author and researcher Keith McCloskey.

The Ural area is near the site of the 1979 Sverdlosk anthrax leak, a “biological Chernobyl” which caused some 100 deaths and was initially explained by the Soviets as a tainted meat outbreak. Further, the Soviets, as with most world powers, were notoriously secretive about their military testing.

There is, however, a far simpler answer. The slope on which the skiers set up camp was at a 22-23 degree angle, well above the 15 degrees at which avalanches become a risk. Most of the evidence conspiracy theorists point to as odd—injuries like the skull fractures and cracked ribs without other soft tissue damage—would be consistent with being crushed by falling snow.

The gruesome missing tongue, the lynchpin of Lebecki’s Yeti theory, could have been caused by a fall into the ravine, a blow from a falling rock suffered while screaming, or local scavengers. And while an avalanche can’t account for the radiation, thorium gas mantles, commonly used in kerosene lanterns, are known to emit a small amount of alpha radiation.

Brian Dunning of Skeptoid, a podcast devoted to examining wacky conspiracy theories, sums up his research as such: “I’m still looking for something in the Dyatlov Pass mystery that lacks a simple and mundane explanation.” But even this answer is incomplete.

If it was an avalanche, what was it caused by? Was it just a freak of nature, or was it the result of a human-produced explosion? What of the orange spheres? What of the incomplete investigation records and the Soviet government’s secrecy?

Of course, Dunning is probably right. But where’s the fun in simple and mundane? As logical as Dunning’s summary is, there remain enough holes in our knowledge of what really happened at Dyatlov Pass to allow our imaginations to fill in the gaps with whatever suits our own personal proclivities.

Whatever really happened in those mountains 57 years ago, there are many in this world who want to believe, and that belief will always run deeper than cold, mundane logic.
