MOSI scientist publishes theory debunking famed ‘extraterrestrial’ signal
MOSI scientist publishes theory debunking famed ‘extraterrestrial’ signal
Antonio Paris, a scientist at the Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa, may have found what caused the famous "Wow! Signal" that has captivated astronomers for decades and is seen by some as the strongest clue ever that alien life exists. Provided by MOSI
TAMPA— An astronomer listening to the void of space nearly four decades ago, hoping to hear a sequence of blips, or beeps, or squelches that rose above the random chaotic noises of the cosmos, heard something one night that electrified the scientific community and the world.
On Aug. 15, 1977, Jerry R. Ehman, an astronomy professor at Ohio State University, was part of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project at the Big Ear radio telescope at a university observatory in Delaware, Ohio, when a blast of radio waves snapped him to attention.
The signal which appeared to have come from a region of space near the Sagittarius constellation, prompted Ehman to scribble “Wow” in red ink next to a couple of circled numbers on a print-out of what he heard. The radio signal lasted 72 seconds. The “Wow Signal,” as it has become known, was never heard again and scientists have ruled out anything from Earth or man made as the source of the signal.
From there, the mantra of “We are not alone,” took hold. Hollywood grabbed the kernel of truth and ran with it in the movie, “Contact,” in which aliens use radio waves to make acquaintances with Jodie Foster.
Now, a scientist with the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) in Tampa believes he has found the source of that noise and it may put to rest the theories involving extraterrestrials, be they cute and friendly like E.T., or malevolent and conquering like the Borg.
As people were looking to the skies, Antonio Paris was studying NASA databases that track the paths of comets discovered since 1977. In that snowstorm of numbers is the likely source of the “Wow Signal,” Paris said, and it has more to do with chunks of rock and ice screeching through the nothingness of space, than aliens trying to reach out to humankind.
Paris said that in August 1977, no known comets were in the area between Earth and the region where the astronomers believed signals came from. But by studying the paths of recently discovered comets, Paris learned that two — 266P/Christensen and P/2008 Y2 (Gibbs) — passed through that part of space at that time, on that date 39 years ago. And, Paris said, they may very well have caused the sound that Ehman heard.
“As comets come closer to the sun, the heat melts them and they send out giant clouds of icy water,” said Paris, director of space programs at MOSI and astronomy professor at St. Petersburg College. “It creates a halo of hydrogen around the comet. In just the right situation, there’s a chance that halo of hydrogen could have given off the ‘Wow Signal.’ ”
He said he started “brainstorming” about the scientific mystery in July.
“I like to use the term ‘revisiting the crime scene,’ the astronomy crime scene,” he said,
One day while driving in his car and thinking about the “Wow Signal” he had a revelation.
“Out of the blue, I was looking at a truck passing on a bridge overhead as I drove under it. It occurred to me it could have been an object that went over us, just like the truck; a truck we will never see again. It could have been a comet or asteroid that came over us so many years ago.”
His research delved into NASA databases, using sophisticated software that tracks paths of comets unseen and undiscovered nearly four decades ago.
“We found two culprits which went all the way back to the original source of the signal,” he said. “They were there on the same exact date, time, and in the neighborhood from where the signal was detected.
“We wanted the answer to this and this might be it.”
Paris published his findings in a recent article written with colleague Evan Davies in the journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences.
“Most in the astronomical community like the paper,” he said. “Everybody is excited, excited to wait for 2017 and 2018 to come around.” That’s when the comets will return to the scene of the crime, though not together.
He said 266P/Christensen will come in January 2017 and P/2008 Y2 (Gibbs) will swing by about a year later.
“That’s the only problem,” he said. “In 1977, they were together.”
The next time those two comets will pass together though that sector of space will be 600 years, he said.
Though astronomers in their lifetimes won’t be able to re-create the exact situation from 1977, they can monitor the comets as they pass one at a time to see if the “Wow Signal” may have come from them.
If not, the origin of the radio pulses heard by Ehman an hour before midnight on Aug. 15, 1977 will remain a mystery.
“I have a gut feeling,” Paris said, “that this was a natural phenomenon.”
He said his paper already is getting “push back,” not from scientists and astronomers, “but from conspiracy theorists.
“There have been only one or two who have gently sent me information and wished me luck,” he said. “I tell them to show me their research.”
Paul Shuch, executive director emeritus of the SETI League, a grass-roots group that promotes private SETI research and education, is pushing back. He said he is looking forward to the testing of the theory when the comets return next year and the year after.
“This is first I’ve head of it,” he said of Paris’ paper. “It’s all speculation right now.”
Shuch, reached Tuesday afternoon at his home in Pennsylvania, earned a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and now is known online as Dr. SETI, a scientist dedicated to searching for life in the cosmos.
“Even with the presence of comets,” said Shuch, “I can see no logical way that, of itself, explains that phenomenon.
“We know that known natural phenomena always emit broad-band signals,” he said. “The ‘Wow Signal’ was decidedly a narrow-band. Therefore there is no known astrophysical phenomenon of a natural origin that could have caused this.
“After multiple re-analyses of data, many hypotheses were ruled out,” Shuch said. “There are only two likely ones left.
“Either it was an inadvertently intercepted extraterrestrial communication or a previously unknown natural astrophysical phenomenon.
“Either possibility is worthy of a Nobel Prize, if we only knew which,” he said. “The problem is we don’t.”
“If comets are capable of this, that would be an exciting discovery,” he said. “If it’s a natural phenomenon, that would be brand new.”

If a space rock hits the atmosphere, and no one is around to hear it, does the tabloid press still report it as an Earth-shattering event? Of course!
Dozens of videos of the Russian meteor were uploaded to Youtube soon after impact on the morning of Feb. 15, 2013, many of which originated from vehicle dashboard cameras (or "dash cams"). During the morning commute many drivers saw the bright orb grow and explode in the atmosphere. The resulting shock wave caused windows to blow out over a huge area injuring over 1,000 people -- mainly cuts and minor concussions.
The event itself is notable because it is the largest atmospheric impact recorded since the famous Chelyabinsk bolide that exploded over Russia in 2013, causing widespread structural damage and injuries to the city with a population of 1 million.
This recent Feb. 6 event unleashed an energy equivalent of 13,000 tons of TNT exploding instantaneously (a.k.a. a "13 kiloton" explosion); the Chelyabinsk impact ripped through the Ural Mountain skies with a whopping energy of 440 kilotons.
The Feb. 6 meteor most likely burned up the majority of its mass during atmospheric entry, any pieces falling as small meteorites safely into the ocean.
This didn't happen over a populated region and, as far as I can tell, there have been no eyewitness reports from mariners or pilots who happened to be in the area at the time. Though this is certainly an important and scientifically interesting event, the impact on the lifeforms of Earth (barring a few unlucky fish 600 miles off the coast of Brazil) was minimal. But the fact that NASA "failed" to tell the world about the impact has gotten some news outlets excited.
"Space agency fails to warn the world about massive blast, even though it's the largest atmospheric explosion since the Chelyabinsk meteor," writes Mirror.co.uk.
But possibly the best headline comes from another UK news outlet, The Express: "FRONT-room-sized meteor came out of nowhere and exploded with force of Hiroshima bomb." Because your front room (British to US translation: living room) is now a universal standard of meteoroid measurement. Noted.
The Mirror also wandered down the conspiracy path, questioning how NASA even recorded the Feb. 6 impact, highlighting Plait's analysis that the atmospheric impact was likely detected by classified military technology.
Normally, atmospheric explosions are recorded by seismic monitors, microphones and/or satellite observations. As Plait pointed out, as the impact was in open ocean, it's not likely that seismic monitors would have been used to record the impact energy. As the military has pretty obvious reasons for monitoring atmospheric explosions, it seems likely the data came from a classified source, probably satellites.
Though an interesting energetic event, Feb. 6 isn't the only time the Earth has been hit by space rocks since Chelyabinsk. Every single day Earth is peppered with around 100 tons of space debris. The vast majority of this mass is no bigger than a grain of sand, and on a clear night you might be lucky to see these tiny specks burn up in the high atmosphere as meteors.
As they slam into the upper atmosphere, these tiny pieces of space rock create a shock wave which, through rapid heating of atmospheric gases, incinerates the debris, erupting in a fast blaze of light. These are called meteors (or "shooting stars"). Larger (and rarer) pieces of space rock will hit the atmosphere as a meteor and may explode as a bolide (as the Chelyabinsk event dramatically showcased), some pieces hitting the ground as meteorites.
Monitoring the regularity of these larger impacts is key for scientists to better understand our Earth's interplanetary environment and although the Feb. 6 event is now grabbing the headlines, remember that most large impacts will happen over water (as the Earth is 70 percent ocean) and impacts of space rocks of around Chelyabinsk meteoroid dimensions are (statistically-speaking) a once in a century thing. Oh, and as for NASA not reporting a bolide impact that no one saw, well, it looks like the tabloid press has that covered.
Lenticular cloud or even a shelf cloud. Amazing shot from viewers in Las Vegas, NM. #nmwx#clouds
Residents of Las Vegas, New Mexico, might have wondered last evening if something had escaped from Roswell. Looming over the horizon was a cloud with the spitting image of a classic UFO, so massively structured it looked like it could atomize the building-blasting motherships of Independence Day.
The above photos were sent by viewers to Jorge Torres, chief meteorologist at KOB-TV, who identified the thing as a ”[l]enticular cloud or even a shelf cloud.” The latter are intimidating, horizon-eating rollers often attached to thunderstorms—and indeed, the region is under a winter-storm warning for a snowy front with possible whiteout conditions. The former clouds typically materialize above mountains or other land masses that draw wind upward, though on rare occasions they’ve developed in flat places like Texas.
The UFO cloud wasn’t the only weird thing to drop out of New Mexico’s storm-roiled skies. Torres also shared these shots of a lumpy funnel extending from a cloud in Roswell:

TALL WHITE ALIENS HOVER IN ‘CLOAKED’ FLYING SAUCER UFO OVER LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO, SAYS UFO HUNTERS — IT’S A LENTICULAR CLOUD, SAYS METEOROLOGIST [PHOTOS]
TALL WHITE ALIENS HOVER IN ‘CLOAKED’ FLYING SAUCER UFO OVER LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO, SAYS UFO HUNTERS — IT’S A LENTICULAR CLOUD, SAYS METEOROLOGIST [PHOTOS]
The appearance of a flying saucer UFO-shaped cloud formation over Las Vegas in New Mexico on Monday sparked a brief, but snarky, exchange between UFO researchers and a local meteorologist who insisted it was only a lenticular cloud. But some UFO hunters argued that the cloud was actually an alien UFO manned by Tall White aliens linked to the U.S. military. Others argued it was a Project SERPO alien spaceship that missed the way to the city of Roswell.
Um, it's obviously a spaceship from Roswell! @JorgeTWeather
Some residents of Las Vegas in New Mexico were thrown into panic on Monday after spotting a flying saucer-shaped cloud formation hanging low over the city. The appearance of the “flying saucer UFO” was so reminiscent of scenes from the 1996 Independence Day movie that rumors spread that a flying saucer mothership UFO was hovering over the city.
But Jorge Torres, chief meteorologist at KOB-TV, who obtained photos of the “UFO” and uploaded them to Twitter, tried to calm fears about an Independence Day-style alien invasion, saying that the formation was only a lenticular cloud and not a flying saucer.
“Lenticular cloud or even a shelf cloud. Amazing shot from viewers in Las Vegas,” he tweed airily.
But UFO researchers pushed back, arguing that the massive cloud-like formation was evidently a “cloaked” flying saucer UFO. They argued that the “cloaking” was so poorly executed that any experienced UFO hunter would see through the disguise immediately.
According to UFO hunters, aliens often disguise their UFOs as clouds because they know that it fools naïve meteorologists like Torres. UFO researchers explained that with regard to the practice of “cloud cloaking,” there are two types of UFOs: the first hide in thick cloud formations while the second generate their own clouds.
“Despite Mr. Torrres’ explanation, there is strong evidence that UFOs do cloak themselves with clouds which they apparently generate,” UFO Sightings Hotspotlectured.
UFO hunters also noted that the appearance of a massive “cloaked” flying saucer UFO over Las Vegas was not surprising with the city of Roswell nearby.
“Um, it’s obviously a spaceship from Roswell!”
Some UFO hunters linked the “flying saucer” to the legendary Project SERPO, an alleged top-secret alien exchange program between the U.S. government and aliens called Ebens from the planet SERPO in the zeta reticuli star system.
But Scott Waring, a well-known UFO blogger, claimed that the UFO belonged to Tall Whites, another alleged extraterrestrial race believed to have worked with the U.S. military since the 1950s.
Alien conspiracy theorists believe that Tall Whites control the U.S. government, and that Obama is a Tall White in disguise. Other conspiracy theorists have linked the Tall Whites with the Israeli military and, oddly, the Nazis.
According to UFO researchers, after the Tall Whites began working with the U.S. government in the 1950s, they developed an addiction to gambling, and since then, they have regularly visited Las Vegas (Nevada) casinos disguised as humans. Maybe this time, a group of Tall White visitors on their way to Las Vegas, Nevada, missed the way and ended up in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
And when later in the day Torres uploaded to Twitter images showing unusual atmospheric phenomenon over Roswell, some UFO researchers declared the strange clouds proof that aliens were prowling over New Mexico in “cloaked” UFOs, and that they were likely on a mission linked to the 1947 Roswell crash.
When Torres argued that the strange Roswell clouds were not alien clouds but likely “cold air funnel clouds,” a UFO enthusiast responded sarcastically, “Roswell? Cold air funnel clouds? Sure…”
The sarcastic tweet prompted a response from Torres, “Aliens paid me to say that, Lily.”
UFO blogger Scott Waring joined the debate on the side of UFO enthusiasts, who claimed that the “flying saucer UFO” was manned by the Tall Whites.
“There is only one species I heard of that acts this cocky, and that’s the Tall Whites. They look just like us when they are children, but will grow taller after 400 years.”
“Only their eyes, skin color and walk give them away,” he continued. “They are known to enter Vegas, Nevada to have some fun. They also like to play mind games with humans to show their superiority. It boosts their ego and trust me… let them win.”
But some UFO hunters insisted that the “UFO” was not a Tall White alien spaceship by a Project SERPO spaceship.
Alien and UFO hunters who promote the Project SERPO conspiracy theory claim that a 3,000 page top-secret document dating back to the 1970s leaked in 2005 by anonymous whistleblowers from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) reveals that the Roswell UFO originated from planet SERPO in the zeta reticuli system, populated by a people called the Ebens.
According to conspiracy theorists, the U.S. government has been involved since the mid-1960s in a top-secret alien exchange project with the Ebens from the planet SERPO. The U.S. government sent 10 male and two female astronauts to planet SERPO in 1965.

BBC News Catches Multiple UFO’s Live During ISS Soyuz Russian expedition
BBC News Catches Multiple UFO’s Live During ISS Soyuz Russian expedition
There was much hype about this recent space launch to the ISS from Kazakhstan, what with it being the first time a British Astronaut (Major Tim Peake) and then the drama that unfolded when the automated systems onboard failed close before the planned docking on December 15, 2015. Soyuz commander Yuri Malenchenko took manual control of the Soyuz before resuming for another attempt at docking which was successful at 12.33 p.m. EST.
Luckily thanks to Yuri all of the Astronauts arrived safely on-board the international space station, but it was only until live news footage of the dramatic docking process (which was recorded by NASA’s very own HD cameras) appears to show NUMEROUS UFO’s in the form of Orbs and a Doughnut shaped LARGE brightly lit object moves by the cameras! Please check out the video (which was viewed live on all of the major news channels) below of this incredible piece of footage which people around the world witnessed LIVE:
U.I.P SUMMARY – Like us guys at U.I.P keep saying on here, perhaps the ET’s are INTENTIONALLY making their presence known in order to help create their very own form of disclosure (please click HERE for more on this). What is incredible about this footage is the fact that you can clearly see that these objects are moving in a somewhat ‘controlled’ type of manner – The doughnut looking UFO looks incredible and almost seems to be ‘bubble like’ in appearance!
Perhaps the ET’s where watching the mission unfold at the space station with the Russian rocket!? It’s important to remember that this very odd other-worldly looking Doughnut UFO has been witness on camera before – please see above.
No matter what NASA say it is clear that this is NOT ice particles ‘floating’ by – Floating Ice is definitely becoming the new ‘weather balloon’

10 Reasons Why Humans May Not Have Come From Earth
10 Reasons Why Humans May Not Have Come From Earth
You know the phrase: Men are from Mars, women are from Venus … but what if we’re all from Alpha Centauri?
An American ecologist by the name of Dr Ellis Silver thinks that he might have spotted a few telltale signs that humans did not originate from Earth, and that we’re actually beings from another world.
There is a pretty well-accepted theory out there that organic matter may have been delivered to planet Earth by meteors, perhaps as single-celled organisms or just as the building blocks of life such as amino acids.
But Dr. Silver goes one step further: That we arrived as fully formed, complex organisms, between 60,000 and 200,000 years ago. Perhaps we interbred with Neanderthals, perhaps we’re just straight up aliens, all Silver knows is that there are some things about our physiology that just doesn’t add up.
Citing everything from sunburn to childbirth in his book Humans are not from Earth: a scientific evaluation of the evidence, Dr. Ellis Silver points out all of the things that seem to contradict the idea that we evolved over millions of years in our earthly environment. Who knows, perhaps Earth is even some kind of prison colony, and we’ve been sent to this little galactic backwater to learn our lesson whilst the rest of the universe zooms about in lightships?
Granted, these theories should probably be taken with a healthy pinch of salt, but what does the venerable Dr. Silver have to say about the possibility that we’re all just spacemen?
11. Bad Backs
If we evolved on this planet, why does just standing up on it hurt us?
Silver argues that the gravity on our home planet must’ve been stronger, and so we’re progressively growing taller and taller with each generation, causing us to have bad backs.
It is thought, in the wider scientific community, that on planets with stronger gravity, human-like life forms would evolve to be much shorter and stockier to deal with the extra gravity bringing them down.
When that gravity isn’t there, we apparently start to grow like forced rhubarb, ending up so tall and willowy that our own skeletons can’t support us very well.
There could also be a counter argument that the gravitational pull on our home planet is, in fact, weaker, and the fact that our bodies will slowly bow to the pressure of Earth’s gravity over our lifetimes is proof that we evolved to deal with weaker gravity.
As we grow older, we hunch over and even shrink, gravity slowly wears us down, starting with a crick in the neck and ending with a hunchback.
Silver also wonders about the possibility that the food on this planet is more nutritious than on our home planet, causing a growth spurt.
If we spent all our time back home chewing on tough, woody vegetation (yum), then were sudden plunged into a world of strawberries and fillet steak, it’s possible that all of those abundant nutrients made us shoot up like a 14-year-old boy who lives on McDonalds and Red Bull.
10. Childbirth
In further expanding his argument, Silver points to the excessive nutrition on earth and a possible cause for the difficulties of human childbirth.
The fact that humans have to spend hours screaming in pain to bring new life into the world, whereas the rest of the animal kingdom can drop a sprog in their sleep, has long puzzled anthropologists. Why is it such an ordeal for us to have kiddies when it’s literally our only biological purpose?
Silver thinks that the high levels of nutrition that we get could cause our babies to grow far bigger in utero than our bodies are designed to cope with.
Indeed, it is a well-known phenomenon that people with diabetes have much larger than average babies due to the high sugar levels in their blood – this demonstrates that there is, in fact, a clear link between high nutrition and baby size.
Whether or not that means that diabetics are even more alien-y aliens than us regular aliens, Dr. Silver doesn’t specify.
Perhaps this is also a result of our newer, willowy frames (thanks to the lack of gravity, remember?). Perhaps, back on our own planet, there are a load of stocky, troll-like beings happily squeezing babies out of their wide, childbearing hips left, right and centre.
9. The Sun
Ahh, it’s that classic summer scene. The moment there’s a little bit of sun, every spare bit of grass, beach or garden is littered with people turning gradually pinker.
But why is that? Why does our own sun do us so much harm?
This is one of Ellis Silver’s arguments for our alien origins. Humans will easily burn through sun exposure, whereas many creatures won’t.
Humans, in contrast with other species, cannot sunbathe for more than short periods at a time without getting sunburned. This indicates that the human body is not effectively adapted to constant exposure to our sun, which is a funny thing for a species that have no protective layer of fur.
Our own sun, from which all life on Earth draws its energy in one way or another, will literally give us cancer if we stay out in it too long, other creatures have evolved so that this doesn’t happen. A lizard, for example, can sit out all day and not get so much as a tan line and some corals even produce their own SPF to protect themselves.
Silver thinks that this is because we evolved with a much weaker sun, or perhaps we originated on a planet with lots of cloud cover.
Another thing that he highlights as odd is the fact that humans seem to suffer from seasonal mental disorders such as Seasonal Affective Disorder. Other animals migrate, hibernate or just tough it out when it comes to surviving an Earth winter, but humans just can’t seem to hack it.
We can’t cope with a lot of sun, we can’t cope with a lack of sun – why are we so ill-suited to the comings and goings of the seasons if we’ve spent millions of years evolving on this planet?
8. We Look So Different
Right, so what’s the deal with this bipedal thing? How come everything else on the planet has remained perfectly happy with a low centre of gravity and sturdy base, whereas we wobble around on two legs?
Perhaps it’s just because we’re looking at it from the inside, but you have to admit that we tend to stick out a bit. Two legs, extremely fine coat, hair growing out of odd places, opposable thumbs, huge heads, big, flat feet – we look much more like aliens than natives.
Silver points to our lack pf body hair as a particularly odd feature of humans. It is necessary for humans to wrap themselves in the furs of other animals, just to stop ourselves freezing to death, even on the hot African plains where we are supposed to have evolved.
The theory is that perhaps on our home planet, the temperature didn’t fluctuate so much between night and day and at different latitudes. Possible reasons for this could be a thicker cloud layer that insulates the planet (a bit like on Venus), a binary star system (so that the sun effectively never sets), or even that the crust of the planet is much thinner, allowing the heat from the molten core to come up through the ground.
As a weird side note: Our relatively high levels of subcutaneous fat and almost total hairlessness, as well as our bipedalism, would actually make us excellent swimmers. Maybe we were some kind of race of semi-aquatic dolphin people on our home planet.
7. We’re Too Advanced
The most conspicuously different feature of the human race, is just how much more advanced we are when compared to the rest of life on Earth.
Why are we so far ahead of every other animal? It sounds like classic human arrogance, but for all our talk about how intelligent dolphins are because they can recognise themselves in a mirror – they didn’t invent the bloody mirror, did they?
Okay, how about if we argue that inventing things like wheels and mirrors and social media executives isn’t necessarily an indicator of intelligence? It’s still drastically different to what everything else on the planet is doing.
Why are we such outcasts from the natural world? It could be because it’s not our natural world.
If we arrived on a primitive Earth with a head start, it could explain why we appear to be leaps and bounds ahead of every other species. Dr. Silvers also cites that fact that the “missing link” that would connect us with our common ape ancestors is still, er, missing (it’s not, but never mind).
We could have come from a planet where a number of species were similarly advanced – perhaps that’s even the reason we left, to go and rule elsewhere.
It all seemed to happen at once too. Evolutionarily speaking it took us fricking ages to get the hang of sharpened rocks, then, all of a sudden, we invented agriculture, writing, language, art, electricity, machinery, chemistry, quantum physics and pretty much everything else around us today. What the hell happened?
6. We Can’t Sleep
One of Silver’s arguments is that the human circadian rhythm is out of whack with the actual day-night cycle on Earth.
The circadian rhythm is the thing that regulates your sleeping and eating patterns. It means that you’re tired at night and awake in the morning and is the reason why you feel jet-lagged after a long haul flight. As the Earth’s day and night cycle lasts for around 24 hours (not including leap seconds because come on), it would make sense for our circadian rhythm to also be on a 24 hour cycle, but it’s not.
Dr. Silver uses the argument that the human circadian rhythm is on a 25-hour cycle, meaning that it makes more sense that we should have evolved on a planet with 25 hour days. Unfortunately, Silver is wrong with the 25-hour figure, but not about the fact that it doesn’t match up.
It used to be thought that our circadian rhythm was a whole hour off, turns out it’s actually anything from a quarter to half an hour off. This doesn’t seem like much until you realise that (providing you stuck to your natural circadian rhythm) it would only take you a month to potentially be 7 hours out of whack. That’s a whole night’s sleep for most people.
This means that our home planet could have been slightly bigger than Earth, in order to have longer days (although, again, it’s not quite that simple), and so this also feeds into Silver’s theory that our home planet had slightly higher gravity.
5. We Don’t Like It Here
Evolution generally means that a species adapts to its environment, but we don’t seem to want to play that game.
A big part of the theory comes down to the fact that we have altered the planet to fit us, rather than the other way around; we just can’t seem to bear living in the natural world. The fact that we have altered our environment so drastically makes it seem as though we’re just not suited to living in earth’s natural habitat.
In fact, what we’re doing appears not to be evolving, so much as terraforming.
Another of Silver’s arguments is that we’re seemingly terrible at reading our own planet. Many animals have built-in sensors for natural phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis and even just the ability to predict the weather, whereas we have had to intervene with our technology in order to keep up with them.
It could be that we came from a planet that is not so geologically active, meaning that there would be no benefit for us to be able to predict earthquakes.
Then, we have the fact that we can’t eat most of the food on this planet without altering it in some way. Whether it’s by cooking it, or through selective breeding, most of the food that we eat is not as nature intended it.
We’re not saying that our home planet had hamburger trees and rivers of lemonade (if it does then book us a one-way ticket to Alpha Centauri), but that fact that most animals, apart from us, are perfectly fine eating grass and raw zebra is a bit weird.
4. Rapid Overpopulation
Humans are spreading, and they’re spreading fast.
As of 2015, there are over seven billion of us crammed onto this tiny little planet and the number is always going up. Not exactly a balanced eco-system.
It’s almost as though we’re an invasive species.
What happens when you introduce a new species into an environment that they did not evolve in? A lot of the time, they take over.
This is due to the fact that they do not have any natural predators and the local fauna are not equipped to defend themselves against them. This means that the non-native species has free reign to hunt, eat and breed, with the potential to decimate the local environment.
This does sound an awful lot like how we interact with the natural world. We’re so far up the food chain, that we don’t even feature as the apex predator in it, we actually exist outside of earth’s eco-system. It does seem to scream foreign species.
Even with other invasive species, the ecosystem will ofetn find a way to restore istelf back to normality. With “normal” imbalances in nature, that balance can be quickly restored as the food runs out, and the invading species will quickly begin to reduce in number again. This doesn’t appear to have happened to humans so far.
Perhaps, when the resources finally do run out, we’ll go the way of many other species and simply become one rogue algea bloom in the long natural history of the planet.
3. A Prison Planet?
One of Dr. Silver’s slightly more esoteric theories is that the Earth may actually be a prison colony for a society of galactic beings.
It is apparently our naturally violent, vengeful, lustful, criminal natures that makes him think this. The fact that you don’t often observe this kind of behaviour in the animal kingdom makes Silver think that it could well be because these are traits that come from a completely different race of people.
The theory is that we could have had our memories wiped and been dumped in a primitive backwater by a civilisation of space-faring beings as a sort of “cooling off” period, presumably after becoming too much of a menace to intergalactic society.
Perhaps they hoped that we would integrate with the natural world on a young planet and become a peaceful race of hunter-gatherers, or something.
But actually what happened is that we almost immediately wiped out the Neanderthals and set about transforming the Earth to suit our anti-social ways, so they left us here.
To be fair, given our earthbound history of shipping criminals off to somewhere out of sight and out of mind, this does sound like exactly the sort of thing we’d do if we ever became a planet-hopping race of pan-galactic beings. The question is, has it already happened?
2. So Where Did We Come From?
In order to figure out our origins, Dr. Ellis Silvers then takes us through the practicalities of colonising another planet, and he’s certainly given it a lot of thought.
So, if we presume that this ancient race of humanoids has developed the technology to travel at near light speed, they would need to originate from somewhere that can be travelled to within a human lifetime. Say, 30-ish light years away.
Silver reckons that these early settlers could well have brought frozen embryos with them to kickstart the whole breeding process, as they would have been elderly by the time they arrived (although this does sort of ruin the whole “Earth is a space prison” thing).
Dr. Silver then goes on to list his top picks for our potential homeworld, including Alpha Centauri A and B (1 lightyear), Epsilon Eridani (10.5), 61 Cygni A and B (17), Epsilon Indi (20) and Tau Ceti (22). Do let us know if one of those names stirs something primordial in you, it could be the proof we need.
The Alpha Centauri binary system eventually claims the top spot due to its proximity and the fact that it’s a binary system (remember our earlier discussion about the sun that never sets?). It would mean that, at even a fraction of the speed of light, it would still be reachable within one lifetime.
Although, fair-minded as always, Dr. Silvers also allows for the idea that a race of galactic beings could well have harnessed the use of hyperspace and wormholes in order to reach our humble little Earth from pretty much anywhere in the universe.
So that doesn’t really narrow it down.
1. An Editor’s Note
Okay, it should be said at this point that Dr. Silver’s theories should be taken with a healthy pinch of salty skepticism.
The idea of planet seeding is one that is gaining lots of interest in the scientific community and many have expressed interest in investigating Silver’s thoughts more thoroughly. Of course, there have also been those who have said that “it is possible to drive a coach and horses through several of his arguments.”
Which is also a fair point.
Silver often mistakes cause for effect and relies too heavily on the assumption that evolution is a perfect process. The idea that every mutation has to “make sense” completely is false, and the idea that evolution does not compromise is wrong. If the benefits of a particular mutation outweigh the cost, then it’s likely to stick around, warts and all.
For example, this accounts for the idea that childbirth is very difficult. In fact, it is because we essentially walk on our hind legs that our pelvises have changed shape. Luckily, the benefits of walking on two legs, thereby freeing up your hands for things like tool-making, outweigh the drawbacks of difficult and painful births (we can even use our hands to help each other give birth). This is known as the Obstetric Dilemma.
Whilst this doesn’t Silver’s theory, it does slightly weaken the “Childbirth, what’s that all about, eh? Eh?!” angle. Something that Dr Sliver relies on quite a bit.
There are quite a few holes like this in Dr. Silver’s theory. But, then again, Silver himself has said that his arguments are designed to spark open debate, and are by no means conclusive proof that we’re all aliens.
So, with that in mind, let us know what you think in the comments. Are we a bunch of hyper-evolved aliens, trapped on this godforsaken rock, or are we just a bunch of apes in shoes after all?
The blob felt “very soft,” divers said, and appeared “gelatinous.” From afar, the mass looked almost invisible, but up close, the group spotted countless little dots floating in the 13-foot sphere.
As Tanriover’s mesmerizing video went viral earlier this month, the Internet leapt at the chance to solve the mystery.
Christopher Mah of The Echinoblog ended up being the first to the plate. Mah said in a tweet that Dr. Michael Vecchione, a squid expert and scientist at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, had come up with a possible answer.
The scientist speculated that a squid called Ommastrephes bartramii (also known as the red flying squid or the neon flying squid) could be responsible for the mass. Red flying squid are a “common species” that can grow to around 5 feet in length,Smithonian.com says.
RED FLYING SQUID (BRITISH MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY/WIKI COMMONS)
As Deep Sea News notes, only one other squid egg mass of such enormity has ever been documented.
In 2008, a 10- to 13-foot egg mass, laid by the large Humboldt squid (which, like the red flying squid, is in the Ommastrephidae family), was found in the Gulf of California. That mass contained between 600,000 and 2 million eggs. At the time, scientists said it was “far larger than the egg masses of any squid species previously reported.”
As for why such squid egg masses are so rarely spotted, Deep Sea News says it might be because of the depth that they’re usually found, and the short duration of time that it takes for the squid babies to hatch.
“These egg masses are likely found much deeper in the ocean and only occasionally drift to shallow water,” the blog notes. “Another factor is time… [In the case of the 2008 mass] the developing squid.. took just three days to hatch. That’s a pretty small window to find such a well-hidden target.”
Dat schrijft techwebsite The Verge.

Glowing UFO Over Korea Shows Common Trend Worldwide, Feb 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News.
Date of sighting: February 15, 2016 17:17 pm Location of sighting: Gyeonggi Province, Korea This UFO was reported this week from Korea and like most, its a glowing white ball. These Foo Fighters are common around the world and can move at incredible speed. The occupants of these craft are more daring than others, because they come closer to the public and in some instances, over thousands without caring about how it effects the humans that watch this event. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com Eyewitness states (roughly translated): I tracked the UFO in Korea, one of the people that captured this UFO was mystery writer "UFO Hunters Huh," who attempted an intentional UFO atmospheric shot in Gyeonggi Province Uijeongbu nokyangdong Nogyang Station square on 15 February, night time, 2016 in the middle of the night, at northwest of the province Yangzhou City Area Chamber. The UFO was seen flying and glowing like a blue rugby ball to the naked eye. I tried to release this video as soon as I could from my camcorder to the public networks. This glowing object was seen for about one minute and flying very low altitude and soon disappeared into the northeast direction. The first visual observations were that it looked a little like a blue rugby and has the speed of an aircraft or helicopter.
A UFO was reported crashing to earth and the French Govt sent a helicopter to go investigate. The helicopter reported that only burt ground was seen. If this was a meteorite, then this should be investigated to find it for the local museum, but perhaps they are lying. They may have found more than they reported and may retrieve the craft at another time. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com
News states: A reported UFO in the sky Holy Cross The vineyards, one resident thought he saw on Wednesday afternoon, an unidentified flying object. The French Govt went on to note The Operations Centre and intelligence of the gendarmerie of the Gironde received a call to say that yesterday in late Wednesday afternoon a UFO was recorded. Thus, a resident of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont area claimed the police had seen on his commune, what he thought was an aircraft positioned at low altitude, which then disappeared through thick smoke. The authorities have taken very seriously the call to the point of having sent patrols on site with a helicopter. But no trace of plane was found nor were reported. The mystery remains. The gendarmerie has posted information on its Facebook page. Only plausible evidence to date, a burn-beating of a plot of vines was spotted by the helicopter, which may explain the fumes reported by the witness ... In any case, the French military asked: perhaps is it a meteor that had fallen, in the southeast of France? But the police also know how to use humor: would it not be a preview of the X-Files series returns to our screens on February 25 after 14 years of absence?
This baby is heading our way in just a few days. NASA says it will come about 14,000 miles from Earth. Now something that needs to be said is back in 2013 a meteor that was 20 square meters exploded over Chelyabinks, Russia. It...was 18 miles above the city, yet luckily it explode before it hit the city. Its explosion had the power of 25-30 atomic bombs and injured over 1,500 and damaged tens of thousands of buildings. Its total weight was more that the Eiffel tower. Now, NASA tells us that Asteroid 2016 TX68 will pass within 14 miles? Are you freaking kidding me? At about 50 meters across this could destroy a dozen cities if it hits the ground. But if it explodes over the city, thousands of people could get hurt. Also, every asteroid has smaller parts that tag along with it. Did NASA take this into account? No! What happens if this asteroid breaks up and does a shotgun effect on a country somewhere? We really needs more info on this one, but NASA...wont reveal much more. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com News states: Scientists have unveiled that an asteroid known as 2016 TX68, larger than an 18-wheel tractor trailer truck moving at more than 34,000 mph, will make a close pass by earth in two weeks. The asteroid, around 100 feet long, has no chance of hitting earth. Scientists said that the asteroid may help raise attention towards tracking the thousands of asteroids passing around space that could severely impact, if ever they hit our planet. The asteroid in question is expected to fly as close as 19,245 miles to Earth at 4:06 pm Pacific time on Monday, March 7. Astronomer Gerald McKeegan at Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland said that he knows the pass by would be quite close, but there is no risk of any collision and henceforth, no need to worry. It has also been unveiled that the asteroid pass-by would end as far as 10.7 million miles away because researchers have not been able to identify its precise orbit. The asteroid pass by would not be visible to naked eye. Even if it would then it will be the first time that an asteroid of such a size has come close to earth in three years. The asteroid was discovered three years back and has been traveling as far out as an area between Mars and Jupiter every 780 days. (more at source).

Date of sighting: February 2016 Location of sighting: Las Vegas, New Mexico, USA Source:
https://twitter.com/JorgeTWeather/status/701921350110175232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw This is not Las Vegas, Nevada. Its actually the same name city, but in New Mexico. A weather reporter on Twitter shared some photos of a UFO cloaked in a cloud over New Mexico yesterday. There is only one species I heard of that acts this cocky, and thats the Tall Whites. They look just like us when they are children, but will grow taller after 400 years. Only their eyes, skin color and walk gives them away. They are known to enter Vegas, Nevada...a different city that his one above, to have some fun. They also like to play mind games with humans to show their superiority. It boosts their ego and trust me...let them win. I believe this UFO is run by the Tall Whites, because few alien species have the audacity to fly so low over the ground and with such a poor cloud cloak over their ship. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com
It could be a scene from Orson Welles’ The War of the Worlds.
Residents of Las Vegas, Mexico fled their homes to catch a glimpse of a weird massive structured UFO looming over the horizon.
Since Las Vegas is not too far away from Roswell, some people suggested the aliens must have escaped from Roswell.
Though, Jorge Torres, chief meteorologist at KOB-TV, who received photos from the UFO and posted it on hisTwitter account, identified the flying saucer as a typically lenticular cloud which normally materializes above mountains but sometimes a lenticular cloud appears in flat open places like Las Vegas.
Despite Mr. Torrres’ explanation, there is strong evidence that UFOs do cloak themselves with clouds which they apparently generate.
Some time ago, I did an article in UFO Digest on my son Justin’s discovery of how one can view unidentified flying objects practically at will by pointing a camera skyward, while eclipsing the sun behind something, usually a roof. The technique is known as , ‘Solar Obliteration Technique.’
This essentially means using a camera technique that is basically eclipsing the sun with an object such as a roof and the camera being able to focus on objects/entities that cannot be seen with the human eye, while using the suns external rays to emit them. This usually works best during winter’s morning hours before the sun’s rays are too concentrated.
Justin has also confirmed that this works the same with the moon and calls that ‘Lunar Obliteration’, but it doesn’t allow objects to be seen in the entire sky like solar obliteration. However, it allows the camera focus on objects that are closely relative to the moon such as a large objects that may be orbiting the moon.
Using a Sony hx200v camera, my son captured an amazing video of a rod and a UFO in the sky over where we live in New Braunfels, Texas, on November 4, 2012.
Every time this technique is used, one is almost guaranteed to spot something out of the ordinary. Rods, UFOs, and various plasma orbs are revealed that normally will not be seen.
What solar obliteration technique tells us is that we are surrounded by what we consider strange phenomena all the time but, just cannot see it under normal conditions.
The sheer magnitude of objects that come and go 24/7 that we are not aware of is astounding. Human civilization goes on with daily life while the world of the unknown flourishes alongside it, remaining just far enough out of the sphere of sight to go unnoticed.
We are constantly monitored by UFOs and entities from other dimensions that go about their business in our plane of existence.
There are some 28,537 commercial flights daily in the United States and on average, most of us see only a few passing planes per day. Using SOT one could view hundreds of UFOs and strange sights if they kept at it all day. Thus, the number of strange phenomena flying around in the sky is much greater than what we have in the sky at any given time.
Not only are we not alone but we must ask the question, are we really in control?
Sightings Recorded in Wales And Manchester; Aliens Hovering Over the UK. Though the existence of UFOs remain contested, it has been reported that multiple sightings have been recorded in the United Kingdom since last year, some of which may have been caught on video. Mutual UFO Network or Mufon, which prides itself in being “the world’s oldest and largest UFO phenomenon investigative body,” reported that 25 UFO sightings have been recorded in Wales while 23 incidents have been reported in Manchester since January 2015. “According the the people who say they have spotted the UFOs, the sighting range from a craft as wide as a street, to a white dot travelling three times faster than a jet,” South Wales Evening Post wrote in a news article. “
There was a total of 476 sightings logged with Mufon in the UK between January 1, 2015, and the middle of February this year.” Aside from Wales, various UFO sighting videos were also purportedly recorded in Manchester. “They range from a sighting of five metallic objects flying in triangle formation, to a ‘red-green ball flying diagonally at great speed’ – and a large square object which flew over the witness’ roof,” Manchester Evening News wrote in a news report. “The figures were revealed after the M.E.N. published footage of a mysterious UFO spotted ‘hovering’ in the skies above Tameside,” the news article continued. “Footage shows an unusual flying craft streaming through the air above Ashton-under-Lyne.Another video showed another mysterious object spotted above Manchester Airport, with unusual white lines streaming through the air.”
With multiple sightings recorded over the past year, does it mean that UFOs are hovering over UK? Aside from the argument that the reports could never be verified especially due to lack of video or photos, it could also be noted that the UFO sightings have not only been recorded in the UK, but also in other parts of the world, including America. In fact, ABC Newspreviously reported that 1,177 UFO sightings were reported to the National UFO Reporting Center or NUFORC from January to April 2015. Despite numerous reports, many UFO hunters choose to discredit sightings that have are not backed up by videos or photos.

To Make a Moon Village, Think Beyond Science and Engineering (Op-Ed)

Tomoya Mori is a senior at Brown University pursuing interdisciplinary studies in space exploration, multimedia and education. He is a co-founder at Metaplaneta, a creative think tank that investigates a multidisciplinary approach to space. He contributed this article to Space.com's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.
"Been there, done that." President Barack Obama famously used that line to help shift the world's attention from the moon to Mars as a space destination in recent years, though the debate on where to go next continues. But whether humanity wants to colonize the moon or terraform Mars, establishing a settlement on other celestial bodies is a challenge of immense scale.
So a more important question to ask is this: What does it take to establish a permanent human presence outside of Earth?
Beyond the usual suspects
This question presents a great diversity of challenges that transcend disciplines. It goes beyond the realm of science and engineering, the two fields often considered the core of space exploration, and include politics, law, architecture, business and design. Extending a human presence beyond the planet will depend on diversifying the space community to include broader interests and perspectives.
Already, a number of institutions collectively foster a multidisciplinary environment within the space industry. The Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) in the University of Houston offers the world's only master of science program in space architecture. Other institutions educate students about space law and policy, including the George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs in Washington, D.C., and Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy in Houston.
These unique programs equip their students with specialized knowledge and skills for the field of space travel. The real value, however, is in bringing new perspectives to the ever-growing space industry. [Moon Base Visions: How to Build a Lunar Colony (Photos )]
Currently, most of those disciplines are functionally independent. Rarely do politicians talk about the architecture of space vehicles, or scientists talk about the potential of space business. But in reality, those fields are so intertwined that interdisciplinary fusion can be a real game-changer.
The space industry should focus not merely on diversification, but also on the process by which diverse disciplines interact. It is time to take a more transparent, integrative and interdisciplinary approach to space exploration.
One method for integrating disciplines, called the integrated design approach (IDA), has proven effective in sustainable design and could provide the same benefits for space.
Lessons from an HVAC
Traditionally, designers have used a linear process to construct sustainable buildings. Architects make sketches and pass them on to the engineers, who evaluate the designs and then assign subcontractors, and so on. However, with that approach, time and money are already running out by the time conflicts and problems arise.
IDA is successful because it involves all project members from the beginning, allowing them to identify and resolve potential conflicts earlier in the process. And the multidisciplinary environment forces project members to think outside their immediate areas of expertise, inspiring innovative solutions to problems and generally producing more energy-efficient and cost-effective results.
For example, in the book "Integrative Design Guide to Green Building" (John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2009), the authors present real-life situations in which IDA led to a surprisingly efficient outcome. The book was written by 7group, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to sustainability and regeneration, and Bill Reed, a proponent and practitioner of sustainability and regeneration.
In the example, a team of architects, landscape designers and engineers was determining the placement of an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system in an office building, and the architect asked the mechanical engineer to provide an answer. The engineer was stunned, at first. Even though he had more than 20 years of experience designing HVAC systems, never in his life had anyone asked him where to locate one. After a few minutes, he provided a solution that turned out to be extremely efficient and cost-effective. Instead of placing the necessary mechanical room on the roof, which the architects had done in the last project, the engineer proposed placing heat-pump units on the ground floor of the building. Not only did this solution reduce the piping work and save $40,000 in construction costs, it also led to simplified maintenance and significant operational savings.
From that experience, the team realized the importance of questioning assumptions. All components of a building are interdependent, and therefore everyone's input should be respected — not only individuals within one's own area of expertise, but also everyone else in a team.
Innovative solutions or strategies often come from unexpected sources, and in this example, the multidisciplinary environment was critical to promoting openness and stimulating everyone's creativity.

Finding transparency (literally)
The work of Danish architects in the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) provides another illustration. In 2009, the Urban Planning Department of Tallinn, Estonia, and the Union of Estonian Architects held an international competition for a new town hall in in Tallinn. Throughout the design process, the BIG architects received input from the jury about the citizens’ needs and take into account of the city’s governance system. The design had to be flexible and accommodate unexpected demands.
The BIG group's solution was simple yet quite novel; it was to increase the transparency between the citizens and politicians, to improve governance and the town's participatory democracy.
The BIG town hall design has myriad glass windows and an open structure, offering the politicians daylight and a view of the city marketplace, and offering the town's citizens a chance to see their elected officials at work.
Although the mayor of Tallinn had expressed his hope to build a new city hall, the proposal still remains a mere design, albeit one that shows the effectiveness of integrated design. Here, the architects not only provided a great working space for politicians, but also unified the city as a whole.
Space habitation is not just space travel
Space infrastructures are, in essence, organic systems. They need to be more self-sustaining than any regenerative and sustainable green buildings on Earth. And because of the constrained living conditions they present, such buildings must include input from the astronauts and travelers who might use them, and the input from a range of designers, engineers and others.
For example, the habitation modules of the International Space Station must address energy and thermal balance, waste management, mechanical structure, and architecture, in addition to comfort and privacy, among other factors.
The Habitation Design Center in NASA's Johnson Space Center often invites astronauts as consultants to improve module designs and make them more human-centered. It may seem obvious, but it is crucial that space vehicles be designed with feedback from astronauts, instead of becoming function-based machines like fighter planes. Rarely does one see inhabitants involved in the design process of an Earth-bound structure.
For missions, like space colonization, of a larger scale, the IDA approach is even more necessary. Settling on a celestial body is far different from simply going there. To establish a sustainable living space in such a hostile environment, one needs to not only think about science and engineering, but also consider psychological, architectural, societal, political and economic aspects.
Moon Master: An Easy Quiz for Lunatics
For most of human history, the moon was largely a mystery. It spawned awe and fear and to this day is the source of myth and legend. But today we know a lot about our favorite natural satellite. Do you?
Targeting the moon
Today, many of the world's space agencies have expressed interest in sending humans to the moon. Johann-Dietrich Woerner, the director general of the European Space Agency (ESA), has been pushing his vision to establish a moon village. Although the agency has yet to officially approve that plan, his message has gone global.
Despite the hint of novelty it carries, the concept of lunar colonization existed long before the Apollo era. Numerous books and papers have presented promising plans for a lunar colony, but none have been realized, or even attempted. One of the fundamental obstacles is financial. Even if the moon village concept succeeded, most taxpayers would not understand why it was worth the cost.
And yet, the moon has the potential to help humanity grow as a species. A lunar colony could be a model for a sustainable ecosystem, a testing ground to strengthen international collaboration, a giant laboratory for cutting-edge scientific experiments and technological innovation, a platform for new businesses, a stepping-stone for further exploration of the solar system, and a mental exercise for challenging norms.
But if humanity is to establish a lunar colony, the world must employ IDA, involving all key players at the start.
Space horizons 2016: international city on the moon
Over the weekend of Feb. 19 to 21, Brown University in Rhode Island will host Space Horizons 2016, a student-focused, three-day integrative workshop that brings students and professionals from all disciplines to conceptualize an international lunar city.
The event will consist of four workshops — Politics, Infrastructure, Science, and Business & Technology — that will ask several questions: What would politically motivate participating countries? What is the economic value of a lunar city, and what commercial opportunities can sustain the lunar economy? What new experiments would emerge on a lunar base, and how would they help humanity live on the moon and beyond? What infrastructure is required to sustain a lunar ecosystem?
Through the integrated-design approach, participants will be encouraged to think beyond their immediate expertise, and to recognize the connections between their skills and the space industry, making space more tangible to everybody. Each workshop will have experienced mentors and professionals, including representatives from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Lunar and Planetary Institute, PoliSpace, Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture, Masten Space Systems, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, Yale University in New Jersey, the University of Central Florida and the Rhode Island School of Design. Ultimately, the findings may lead to a joint project or publication.
But Space Horizons 2016 is not the first to take on the moon village concept. At the end of last year, ESA European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) hosted "The Moon Village Workshop", which took place in conjunction with International Symposium on Moon 2020-2030. The workshop invited professionals and students from all over the world to discuss and propose ideas to consolidate visions for the moon village concept. The participants were split into three groups: Moon Habitat Design, Science and Technology Potential in the Moon Village, and Engaging Stakeholders.
The three working groups came up with several recommended actions to be taken by the director general of ESA, including the design and operations of a moon-base simulation at the European Astronaut Centre and the engagement of the most direct stakeholders, such as media, national governments and citizens, at the next ESA Ministerial Council Meeting.
It takes time for educational strategies to prove their effectiveness. And as long as the moon village concept remains a vision, it will be challenging to involve people from nonspace industries, especially in an era in which the space industry is generally considered exclusive to rocket scientists.
However, the future of space exploration is in widening the community. Most innovative ideas are the products of interdisciplinary fusions. Just as much as technological advancements will accelerate space exploration, broader interests and perspectives will also catalyze the process of establishing space colonies. The integrated-design approach has the potential to not only open up new perspectives, but also offer a younger generation an opportunity to design the future of space exploration and radically change humanity's perception of space. It is those people who will advance society into the universe.

Catching a flight to Mars won't be possible for most of us until human trips to the Red Planet become affordable, routine and heck, even possible. NASA is currently hoping to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s, although some experts recently warned Congress that the agency's budget may not be able to support that goal.
In any case, NASA is sticking to the 2030s timeline for now, and one way it is promoting it is by letting you stroll on the Red Planet in virtual reality. Through a partnership with VR developer Fusion (whose parent companies are Disney-ABC and Univision) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a new game called "Mars 2030" will premiere at South By Southwest in March and be available to the public later this year.
"NASA has provided us information to achieve the highest level of regard for scientific accuracy through direct contact with various teams working on the many facets of such a complex mission," said Julian Reyes, Fusion virtual reality producer and designer, in an e-mail to Discovery News.
"We've visited JSC (Johnson Space Center) and Langley Research Center on multiple occasions and had several interviews with scientists dedicated to studying the planet. Our goal is to stay within the bounds of scientific accuracy while still driven by a compelling story that engages the players."
Fusion first got interested in Mars 2030 after reading about a now-famous "Mars One" 2014 feasibility study written by MIT students. Mars One is a privately funded initiative to send humans on a one-way trip to the Red Planet, and is now selecting astronauts for preliminary training while simultaneously trying to raise funds for the journey. While Mars One says the hardware will be capable of keeping humans alive indefinitely, the study cited limitations with their version such as needing frequent resupplies, which will only grow as a colony naturally expands in size.
Fusion contacted lead author Sydney Do (a Ph.D. student at MIT) after the study was publicized. To do the study, Do explained to Discovery News in an e-mail, the students created a simulation of a Mars outpost based on statements and claims by Mars One. Following the activities of four people on Mars, the students then created the systems needed for consumables (gases and water) to keep the crew alive, and the spare parts needed to support these systems. This information then gave them information on what a surface habitat system would need.
"The Mars 2030 experience essentially incorporates insights like these into a more realistic visual environment," said Do, who describes himself as an occasional gamer. "You could say that our research does the back-end work — it determines how much of what resource or technology is needed based on a crew activity profile designed to meet some mission objective, while the Mars 2030 experience visualizes this information and builds a story around it using the state of the art in game development."
Do acted as a technical advisor for Fusion, providing information on aspects of Mars such as surface habitats, life support, food, crew activities in the habitat and outside, maintenance and in-situ resource utilization. He even took into account planetary protection protocols to, for example, suggest sterilized robots explore an area before a human went there and threatened any possible microbes.
The result, Reyes, said, is an "open-world" environment where players can complete missions to explore Mars — making sure the missions address goals of NASA. The game still feels like a game, but Fusion is "staying true to the science of the experience and elaborating on it whenever possible (without making things boring)," he said.
Reyes said the game should be available for late summer if all goes well, first focusing on desktop systems before being expanded to consoles and mobile. "There are several moving parts that we still need to nail down for that to solidify," he added. According to MIT, platforms that will be included eventually include Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard, Samsung VR Gear, iPhone, Android and Twitch.
