Astronomers May Have Discovered the Cosmic Origins of “The Weirdest” Subatomic Particles

Since the first evidence of extragalactic neutrinos, a strange type of subatomic particle, scientists have been trying to find out just where they originated from. Now, they have a 10 billion year-old culprit in mind.
Antarctica is filled with ice, penguins, and mysterious subatomic particles…among other things. Just over three years ago, physicists working on the chilly continent detected the first evidence of the particles, known as neutrinos, coming from outside our galaxy. This was huge— however, no one was able to figure out just where those particles were coming from, or why. Until now.
A team of astronomers claims that they found the source, and the story of the particles journey to us begins 10 billion years ago, when a massive explosion erupted in a far off galaxy.
WEIRD SCIENCE
But let’s back up for a moment and understand why the neutrinos are such a big deal.
To begin, they’re pretty strange. In fact, Science Alert describes them as “the weirdest of the fundamental subatomic particles.” They don’t have any mass, they’re super quick, and they’re basically invisible. Think: ‘Wonder Woman’s invisible plane,’ and you’ll begin to note just how weird they are.

Researchers have set up extravagant labs, like the IceCube Neutrino at the South Pole, just to detect neutrinos—which they did in 2013. They found neutrinos that were so unimaginably energetic, they knew they must have come from outside our galaxy.
Named “Bert” and “Ernie,” these neutrinos were the first evidence of extragalactic neutrinos. Over the next few months, the scientists detected a couple dozen more. If you thought the Sesame Street naming spree was over, you’re wrong. At the end of 2012, they spotted “Big Bird,” which was the most energetic neutrino ever detected at the time.
IDENTIFYING THE CULPRIT

Lead researcher Matthias Kadler, from the University of Würzburg in Germany, describes the hunt for the origin of these mysterious particles “like a crime scene investigation.”
Well, the team believes they found the culprit: A huge explosion known as a blazar, which occurred in galaxy PKS B1424-418 around 10 billion years ago. A blazar occurs when a galaxy’s material falls towards the supermassive black hole at its centre, and some of that material ends up being blasted in huge jets directly towards Earth.
“The blazar seems to have had means, motive and opportunity to fire off the Big Bird neutrino, which makes it our prime suspect,” said Kadler.
The hypothesis needs to be verified before we can say for sure where Big Bird came from, but scientists are excited that we might finally be getting close to better understanding these mysterious particles.
UFOs, flying saucers, little green men…..they're all part of our imagination. Have you seen some strange light in the sky that you can't explain? Some may say that the flash of light you saw was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus. Or was it? People talk about the archetypal landing on the Whitehouse Lawn. Maybe it will happen. Maybe it will not. Most encounters are just seen from the sky. While others get a little more....personal. A ship came up and it was disguised in a cloud. Thunderbeat, of Arizona, says that as a 4 year old she and her mother were abducted by aliens. And as it was pulling me up my mother was running out of the house trying to catch me in mid air and they pulled her up too. She claims to have a great relationship with her out of this world abductors.
But we've seen through the eyes of fiction aliens like to have humans over for dinner……as it were. Don't get on that ship. The rest of the book. To serve man. It's, it's a cook book! And although we have not visited other planets personally, we are making advances in exploration Our radio telescopes are getting to the point where they will find those civilizations if they're out there. Debates about whether we're alone in the universe will become redundant, we'll know. Those that have claimed to have seen a UFO or have come in contact with one, can often find themselves sometimes going down the road less traveled. One such person is Travis Walton. He garnered national attention with a book Fire In the Sky and movie by the same name, about his personal abduction experience in Arizona in 1975. ? Some witnesses are credible enough to have movies made about those events. I saw an object. A UFO. Hovering near the road. Went up to get a closer look. And was taken aboard. These beings are what people call grays. Short, hairless, large-eyed humanoid beings. Possibly injured but uh returned five days later. While others, uh...Maybe not so much. They would call me out of my house and say come on. Go to the beach. I lived by the beach. Said go to the beach. Let's go meet. And we'll take you for a ride kind of thing. Retired Nuclear Physicist and Professional Ufologist Stanton Friedman of Canada believes we've been visited and thinks governments need to come out and admit it. There is overwhelming evidence that the planet is being visited. Governments know about that. And we better straighten up and fly right. And if you live in fear of an alien invasion, Freelance Journalist Nick Pope has this to say, but listen with caution, it won't calm your nerves any. You could say that there is a potential threat. And clearly we wouldn't have much of a chance if it came to an alien invasion scenario. Ufologists and skeptics alike have speculated about the connection between UFO sightings and military bases. In one particular location that gets a lot of sightings, military bases. Of course there are two schools of thought about that. Skeptics say that well that just shows that most of these things are just secret prototype or drones and that it's our own technology. The counter argument for the believers is that we're dealing with extra-terrestrials who for whatever reason are taking an interest in our military. Perhaps any threat we might pose to them. I think there's two schools of thought there.

If you believe one set of claims, nearly four million Americans have been abducted by aliens. This figure has been widely publicized and is often assumed to mean that millions of people have been visited by members of an alien species and, in some cases, physically taken from their beds, cars, or homes to an alien craft or planet.
Regardless if I actually believe these claims, after reading countless witness accounts, hours of video, and researching the facts you tend to imagine just what would it be like. Just having a interest in extraterrestrial visitation you will end up going to sleep with “visions” stuck in your head!
So if your like me and have a Netflix list full of Alien movies and TV shows, including but not limited to crazy space travel shows, doomsday and apocalyptic thrillers, and other flicks in the same genre then you may oftenponder,…..
“What the Hell would I do if it happened to Me!”
People claiming to have been abducted are usually called “abductees” or “experiencers”. Due to a paucity of objective physical evidence, most scientists and mental health professionals dismiss the phenomenon as “deception, suggestibility (fantasy-proneness, hypnotizability, false memory syndrome), personality, sleep paralysis, psychopathology, psycho-dynamics and environmental factors”.
However, the late Prof. John E. Mack, a respected Harvard University psychiatrist, devoted a substantial amount of time to investigating such cases and eventually concluded that the only phenomenon in psychiatry that adequately explained the patients’ symptoms in several of the most compelling cases was post traumatic stress disorder. As he noted at the time, this would imply that the patient genuinely believed that the remembered frightening incident had really occurred.
Dr. Mack claimed that his psychiatric patients were not mentally ill (then why was he treating them?) and that he could think of no better explanation for their stories than that they were true. However, until someone produces physical evidence that abductions have occurred, it seems more reasonable to believe that Dr. Mack and his patients were deluded or frauds. Of course, the good doctor could hide behind academic freedom and the doctor/patient privacy privilege. He could make all the claims he wanted and refuse to back any of them up on the grounds that to do so would be to violate his patients’ rights. He could then publish his stories and dare anyone to take away his academic freedom. He was in the position any cheat would envy: he could lie without fear of being caught.
Typical claims involve being subjected to a forced medical examination that emphasizes their reproductive system. Abductees sometimes claim to have been warned against environmental abuse and the dangers of nuclear weapons. While many of these claimed encounters are described as terrifying, some have been viewed as pleasurable or trans-formative.
I tell my friends who claim to be abducted by aliens, ‘If you’re in a flying saucer, steal something,’” “I don’t care what it is, a pen, a paperweight, anything, so you have bragging rights after you leave the flying saucer, otherwise, you’re empty-handed.”
If it were me, I know for a fact I would not go quietly into the night! First off, my smart phone is never far away, either in my pocket or next to my bed.
My first response would be to attack at all costs! But if for some highly advanced galactic reason I was unable to resist I would be taking photo’s and video until they strapped me down or took away my phone! I know, some of you are going to say that phones, camera’s and other electronics stop working or are disabled by the extraterrestrial kidnappers.
So then I must think fast and assuming they are going to drop me off back at home or my car like countless other abductions I need to get the PROOF!
I can try to scratch them them and have their DNA under my fingernails!
I can try and steal something!, it doesn’t need to be much, just something that’s looks like its from another planet or galaxy!
Ok, so maybe I wasn’t able to scratch them or steal anything then all I have left is my experience that no one will believe. Oh wait! Im in a huge craft that others had to of seen right? My neighbors, family members or others in my area?
Quickly I look around to see if anyone else is here with me? If yes, maybe I can holler out a “Hey You!, whats your name and digits? We need to talk later!”
Or if I’m alone in this nightmare I can try to observe as much as possible so I can re-create the environment I am in and describe it to others! Surely they will believe me after my childish drawings I produce!
I awake in the morning with vivid memories of a horrible experience so life like that it had to be real!
During quick evaluation of my condition I notice a mark on my left foot I never saw before and of course assume its a Alien implant!? How else could I have gotten this mysterious mark? It had to be Aliens!
If you have not figured out by now that I highly doubt any claims of Alien abduction and wanted to show that sometimes our desire to believe trumps rational thought and statistical and common sense solutions.
If the figures stated in the first paragraph for just America (The USA accounts for the majority of claims) are accurate and 4 million plus have claimed similar experiences or very different experiences but never are able to produce tangible evidence then the only conclusion is they never happened and are not reality.
A dream, Sleep paralysis, mental illness or other medical conditions are the the only real answers!,…Well besides a whole host of other motives like attention, profit, or whatever else might make a individual resort to such otherworldly claims that only card carrying tin foil hat wearing sympathizers would appreciate.
Ufology has given us some truly fantastic and entertaining stories, thousands of photos and videos, many quotes (and misquotes) from various prominent people, stacks of documents released from national archives around the world, news reports and books on the subject. The mountain of ‘evidence’ grows ever higher. However, high as that pile now seems, no one has found a ‘smoking gun’ amongst it all as yet.
But remember,..The next nearest star to Earth’s sun (Alpha Centauri) is about 4 light-years away. That might sound close, but it is actually something like 24 trillion miles away. Even traveling at one million miles an hour, it would take more than 2,500 years to get there. To get there in under thirty years would require traveling at more than 100 million miles an hour for the entire trip.* At 100,000,000 mph you could get to the center of our galaxy in 200,000 years; you could reach the edge of the universe in a mere 92 billion years. Our fastest spacecraft, Voyager, travels at about 40,000 miles an hour and would take 72,000 years to get to Alpha Centauri.
The abduction phenomenon increased exponentially during the 70s/90s but seems to have disappeared as technology has caught up. You wont find any reports of a abduction since 2009. So maybe their vacation to Earth is over, or its harder to make a story like that believable in this day and age with everyone having a camera in their pockets.
The era of ‘Classic’ UFO reports are long gone. There are very few significant UFO events from the 21st century worth serious investigation. Youtube videos of a light in the sky or CGI UFOs are aplenty.
The internet has killed the UFO Magazine industry and is rapidly diminishing the book market too. Numbers at conferences are dwindling because there is little new to discuss or sell to an ageing conference audience.
That all said the satellite and cable media seem to love UFOs . On TV there has been a glut of recent programming from various production companies. Although now there seems to be a blurred line between whether the modern UFO show is a serious documentary featuring real research or just entertainment with license to freely stretch the truth.
Various talking heads all tend to tread this fuzzy, vague line whilst appearing on late night talk radio shows and TV shows like Hangar One. A show where entertainment is king and there is absolutely no critical or scientific analysis of the MUFON files or the ‘evidence’ presented in these shows.
Before you start to send me countless links to YouTube videos and “UFO Researchers” (Also known as Frauds, Hoaxers, Book Whores, and unqualified idiots) articles and books I will tell you been there, done that and quit drinking the kool aid years ago.
If you want to keep on believing in aliens visiting Earth and abducting everything from cows to humans that’s your prerogative, Good Luck!

Selon une équipe de chercheurs de l’université de Washington, il y a une chance sur 10 milliards de billions pour que nous soyons la première et la seule intelligence à avoir existé dans l’univers.

Telle est la probabilité pour que l’humanité soit la première et la seule espèce intelligente à avoir existé dans l’univers, d’après une étude de chercheurs du Département d’astrobiologie de l’université de Washington publiée fin avril dans la revue «Astronomy». Autrement dit, les scientifiques sont persuadés que des extraterrestres ont existé ou existent actuellement aux confins de l’univers.
Pour en arriver à cette deduction, ils ont résolu une équation en se basant sur le nombre total de planètes connues situées dans une «zone habitable», comme celle découverte récemment, et sur la probabilité qu’une vie intelligente se soit développée sur celles-ci. Ce chiffre astronomique se justifie également par l’âge de notre civilisation (environ 10 000 ans) qui est extrêmement faible comparé à celui de l’univers (environ 13 milliards d’années). «Nos résultats montrent que notre évolution n’a pas été unique et se serait produite à plusieurs reprises par le passé», indique Adam Frank, professeur d’astrophysique et co-auteur de l’étude, avant d’ajouter : «Pour moi, cela implique que d’autres espèces intelligentes et technologiques ont très certainement évolué avant nous».
Le paradoxe de Fermi
S’il est catégorique sur l’existence de civilisations extraterrestres durant cette longue période, on ne les a, pour l’heure, pas encore débusquées. C’est le paradoxe de Fermi : comment se fait-il que l’on ne parvienne pas à trouver leurs traces alors que les mathématiques attestent leur existence ?
Là encore, les chercheurs justifient cela par le fait que 10 000 ans de civilisation humaine ne sont pas suffisantes pour croiser d'autres sociétés, qui auraient pu vivre des milliards d'années auparavant. Mais surtout, ils estiment que cela peut être dû à la nature autodestructrice de la vie intelligente. «Nous ne savons même pas s’il est possible qu’une civilisation de haute-technologie survive plus que quelques siècles», explique le chercheur, cité par le Huffington Post.
The study of closed timelike curves (CTC’s) provides valuable insight into particles that can loop back on themselves, breaking free of linear time.
“One aspect of general relativity that has long intrigued physicists is the relative ease with which one can find solutions to Einstein’s field equations that contain closed timelike curves (CTCs)—causal loops in space–time that return to the same point in space and time.”(source)
The Science
Closed timelike curves are a necessary concept to understand this experiment.
CTCs are used to simulate powerful gravitational fields, like the ones produced by a spinning black hole, that could theoretically (based on Einstein’s theory of general relativity), warp the fabric of existence so that space-time bends back on itself. This creates a CTC, almost like a pathway to travel back through time.
The source of time travel speculation lies in the fact that our best physical theories seem to containno prohibitions on traveling backward through time. The feat should be possible based on Einstein’s theory of general relativity, which describes gravity as the warping of spacetime by energy and matter. An extremely powerful gravitational field, such as that produced by a spinning black hole, could in principle profoundly warp the fabric of existence so that spacetime bends back on itself. This would create a “closed timelike curve,” or CTC, a loop that could be traversed to travel back in time. (source)
Experiementing With CTC’s
Single particles of light (photons) to simulate quantum particles travelling through time were just used by scientists from the University of Queensland, Australia. They showed that one photon can pass through a wormhole and then interact with its older self. Their findings were published in Nature Communications.
Much of their simulation revolved around investigating the “grandfather paradox,” a hypothetical scenario in which someone uses a CTC to travel back through time to murder her own grandfather, thus preventing her own later birth.
The Grandfather Paradox in Quantum Physics
Instead of a human being traversing a CTC to kill her ancestor, imagine that a fundamental particle goes back in time to flip a switch on the particle-generating machine that created it. If the particle flips the switch, the machine emits a particle—the particle—back into the CTC; if the switch isn’t flipped, the machine emits nothing.
“It’s intriguing that you’ve got general relativity predicting these paradoxes, but then you consider them in quantum mechanical terms and the paradoxes go away.” – University of Queensland physicist Tim Ralph (source)
Tim Ralph (quoted above) and his PhD student Martin Ringbauer simulated a Deutsch’s model of CTCs, according to Scientific American, “testing and confirming many aspects of the two-decades-old theory.” Although it’s just a mathematical simulation, the researchers (and their team/colleagues) emphasize that their model is mathematically equivalent to a single photon traveling through a CTC. Nothing has actually been sent back through time though; to do that, scientists would have to find a real CTC, which has yet to happen as far as we know. Of course, there always remains the possibility…
Tired of hearing stories about Area 51? Here’s a list of other places routinely visited by UFOs.
1. San Luis Valley, Colorado
Over the years, a plethora of reports have earned the San Luis Valley the reputation of a UFO hotspot. And it’s not just flying saucers. People have allegedly seen shadow people lurking in the area and cattle from several farms have been found mutilated. Conspiracy theorists have drawn parallels between these strange cases and the alleged presence of a number of secret military bases. As you would expect, such a connection would be difficult to prove.
2. Wenceslas Mine, Poland
Rumor has it that during WWII, the Nazis retrieved a crashed UFO and were actively researching the alien technology it carried. However, the war ended before they could turn the tide in their favor. The same rumors say that the research had been carried out in a secret facility located in the Wenceslas Mine in southwestern Poland.
Some conspiracy theorists believe that Die Glocke, The Nazi Bell was designed and built in this underground facility location.
3. Dulce Base, New Mexico
Dulce is a small town with a population of about 3,000 residents, located near the border of New Mexico and Colorado. It’s also home to one of the most controversial underground bases. Some have claimed that beneath the Archuleta Mesa lies a facility housing thousands of reptilians and the unethical experiments they allegedly perform on humans. According to other accounts, it is the gray aliens who run the base but the activity is the same.
No matter how outrageous these claims might seem, a few conspiracy theorists swear the whole thing is real.
4. Perm Anomalous Zone, Russia
Discovered in 1989, this 70 square kilometer area is located in the Ural Mountains. Its proximity to a village called Molyobka has caused the zone to be nicknamed the M-Triangle. Reports claim that the area receives constant UFO visits and physical manifestations. Strange lights, strange shadows, unknown energies, symbols in the sky; apparently this place has them all.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much information available about the M-Triangle, making it another unverifiable Russian mystery.
5. Tonopah, NV and Tonopah, AZ
Tonopah, Nevada houses a highly secretive base and it’s located about 70 miles northwest of Area 51. Very few people know of its existence and it is rarely mentioned even between members of the intelligence services. Lockheed’s F-117 Nighthawk was a well-kept secret at the Tonopah Test Range in the mid-1980’s. Although these stealth fighters left the base years ago, it still remains operational. What could it be hiding now?
Five hundred miles to the southeast and we’re in Tonopah, Arizona. While no anomalies are reported over Tonopah, Nevada, its eponymous counterpart has plenty. People have reported UFOs of all shapes and sizes flying over Tonopah, AZ. Sometimes the flying saucers would be escorted by fighter jets, arising suspicion about joint alien-human operations. Some believe that the UFOs are actually attracted by the nearby Palo Verde nuclear plant. This behemoth generates a shocking 3.3 gigawatts of power, enough to serve 4 million people, send Marty McFly back in time twice and attract curious extraterrestrials, all at once.
6. S4 Facility, Nevada
In the early 1980’s, Bob Lazar started making public appearances andsensational statements. He claimed to have been employed by the U.S. government to work on reverse-engineering captured alien craft. These activities were allegedly carried out inside the S4 facility, which was hidden in the side of a mountain, 20 miles south of Area 51.
Lazar was unable to provide the exact location of the S4 base since he and his fellow workers had been transported with a blacked-out bus to the site. The facility consists of nine hangars built into the mountainside, with the angle of the hangar doors matching the natural slope of the mountain and well-camouflaged among the surrounding environment. Inside, scientists and gray aliens work towards an unknown common purpose.
Bob Lazar’s claims remain unverified and largely unverifiable due to the area being highly restricted to public view.
7. Saddam’s Area 51
Word around conspiracy sites has it that former dictator Saddam Hussein was in cahoots with aliens. Or at least managed to grab some of their technology from a crashed (unearthed, as some would say) UFO. This alleged secret area was located somewhere in the upper valley of the Little Zab River, near a town called Zarzi.
Saddam’s very own Area 51 attracted interest in 2002, when an anonymous source with ties to the military claimed that a UFO had crashed in Iraq in the previous years. Information is scarce and there’s little hope of finding out whether this actually happened.
Interestingly enough, the Nazi occult organization called Ahnenerbe showed interest in the area around Zarzi and allegedly recovered artifacts from an excavated ancient Sumerian city.
8. Kongka La Pass
The highly disputed border between India and China is an inhospitable place. Located on this border is Kongka La, a remote mountain pass which is said to be home to an alien base. Locals on both sides of the pass have reported many strange occurrences and they claim both governments know about the unusual activity taking place in the pass. They say triangle-shaped silent crafts are seen taking off vertically from and disappearing into an underground UFO base.
9. Kaputsin Yar
Sometimes called Russia’s Roswell, this secretive base has served as a research and test facility for Soviet missiles, rockets and satellites. Over the years, numerous strange events have been linked to this base. Rumor has it that there’s an underground base beneath Kaputsin Yar, where the remains of a downed UFO were brought in for study in 1948.
The most recent event involved a UFO that hovered over the base for two hours, emitting a bright beam of light from time to time.

Een internationaal team van astronomen onder leiding van wetenschappers van de Luikse Universiteit (ULg) heeft op slechts veertig lichtjaar van ons in het sterrenbeeld Waterman drie levensvatbare exoplaneten gevonden. Het zijn tot nu toe de beste plaatsen om (met de huidige technologie) te zoeken naar leven buiten ons zonnestelsel. Mocht er leven op die planeten mogelijk zijn, betekent dat echter niet dat we die zomaar mogen claimen. We moeten rekening houden met het 'ruimteverdrag' dat vrede in de ruimte moet garanderen.
Robert Walker, een wiskundige en expert in ruimtevaart, legt op Quora uit dat een land niet zomaar een territorium buiten de aarde mag claimen. Walker, die al schreef voor gerenommeerde bladen als Forbes, Business Insider en Huffington Post, zegt dat je enkel je eigen habitat mag claimen. Hij haalt daarbij het 'Ruimteverdrag' aan, dat de basis vormt voor het internationaal ruimterecht.

Het ruimteverdrag is van onschatbare waarde, omdat het vrede garandeert en omdat het heel moeilijk is om een dergelijk verdrag door bijna alle landen ter wereld te laten ondertekenen. Het verdrag werd ondertekend door 128 landen, waaronder de VS, China, Rusland en zelfs Noord-Korea. Andere verdragen zoals het 'maanverdrag', dat door de VS werd opgesteld, botsten op een njet van grote mogendheden. Het ruimteverdrag geldt dus als dé belangrijkste basis voor vrede in de ruimte. Maar wat houdt het verdrag dan juist in?

Volgens het ruimteverdrag mag een land geen territorium claimen buiten de aarde. Het enige wat je wel mag claimen is de habitat die je zelf hebt opgebouwd. Mocht je bijvoorbeeld serres bouwen op de maan om gewassen te kweken, dan bezit je wel de serres, maar niet de grond waarop ze gebouwd zijn. Bovendien is het volgens het verdrag, dat vrede als hoofddoel heeft, ten strengste verboden militaire basissen te bouwen in de ruimte.
Mocht je een nieuwe bewoonbare planet ontdekken, dan mag je er dus wel een habitat op bouwen, al beschermt het ruimteverdag die habitat niet. Iemand anders kan bijvoorbeeld je habitat inpalmen of er een vlak naast bouwen.
Mogelijk moet het verdrag dus enigszins worden uitgebreid, mochten we ooit een nieuwe bewoonbare planeet ontdekken.
Het verdrag kan worden uitgebreid op verschillende manieren. Zo kunnen we het voorbeeld van de boorplatformen volgen, waarvan de eigenaars een bepaalde zone rond het platform controleren. Schepen hebben de toestemming nodig van de eigenaars om het platform te benaderen of te bezoeken.
Ook voor het ISS-ruimtestation geldt die regel: bezoekende ruimteschepen moeten voor veiligheidsredenen eerst toestemming vragen aan het ISS voor ze mogen naderen. Mogelijk kunnen habitats ook een dergelijke veiligheidszone krijgen, mocht een nieuwe planeet ooit gekoloniseerd worden.
Een andere denkpiste is die van de functionele eigendom. Mocht je bijvoorbeeld beginnen met mineralen te ontginnen op de nieuwe planeet, dan is de mijn van jou zolang je ze blijft gebruiken. Mocht je de mijn ooit verlaten, dan zijn anderen vrij om ze over te nemen.

Mochten we ooit een nieuwe planeet ontdekken, dan zullen we hoe dan ook rekening moeten houden met het ruimteverdrag. Het verdrag is immers het belangrijkste instrument om vrede in de ruimte te bewaren. Het is echter ook noodzakelijk om dat verdrag uit te breiden, al is het onduidelijk hoe dat dan zou gebeuren.
Een ruimtekolonie zou hoe dan ook heel fragiel zijn. Een goede regulering is dus onontbeerlijk.
Het is een van de grote wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen van de afgelopen eeuwen: het bewijs dat Albert Einstein gelijk had en dat zwaartekrachtgolven echt bestaan. Die vondst heeft dinsdag een belangrijke wetenschappelijke prijs gekregen, de Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, voor natuurkundige doorbraken.
Aan de prijs is een bedrag van 3 miljoen dollar verbonden, omgerekend 2,6 miljoen euro. Daarvan gaat 1 miljoen dollar naar de drie mensen die het apparaat hebben opgezet waarmee de ontdekking is gedaan. De overige 2 miljoen dollar wordt verdeeld onder meer dan duizend wetenschappers die aan het onderzoek hebben meegewerkt. Zij krijgen bijna 2.000 dollar per persoon. Onder hen zijn sterrenkundige Gijs Nelemans, natuurkundige Jo van den Brand en tientallen andere medewerkers van het Amsterdamse onderzoeksinstituut Nikhef, de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen en de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
De zwaartekrachtgolven waren een groot raadsel van het heelal. Albert Einstein opperde in 1915 dat het heelal bestaat uit ruimte en tijd en dat die één geheel vormen. Na een heftige gebeurtenis kan die 'ruimtetijd' trillen. De schokgolven, de zwaartekrachtgolven, gaan dan door het heelal als rimpelingen na een steen in een vijver. Bij zo'n rimpeling rekt de ruimte iets uit of krimpt hij iets.
Pas honderd jaar later, met de meest geavanceerde laserapparatuur, kon het gelijk van Einstein worden bewezen. Op 14 september pikten twee Amerikaanse detectoren een zwaartekrachtgolf op. Die was afkomstig van twee zwarte gaten, die 1,3 miljard jaar geleden zijn samengegaan. Door de golf verschoof een speciale laserstraal een miljoenste van een miljoenste van een miljoenste van een meter. Het bewijs dat Einstein gelijk had.
Wetenschappers kunnen met zwaartekrachtgolven op een hele nieuwe manier naar het heelal kijken. Dan zien ze dingen die tot nu toe verborgen bleven, zoals objecten die geen licht uitstralen.

Bij de beroemde Nazcalijnen in Peru is een nieuwe zandtekening ontdekt. De afbeelding van een ‘mythisch dier’ dat zijn tong uitsteekt is ongeveer 30 meter lang en meer dan 2000 jaar oud. De afbeelding is ontdekt door een Japanse archeoloog.
De geoglief is gevonden vlak bij Pampa de Majuelos, op zo’n 12 kilometer van de Nazcalijnen. In 2011 werden op dezelfde plek twee figuren ontdekt.
Reliëf
Vorig jaar kwam een groep archeologen de geoglief op het spoor. De makers ervan hebben ruim 2000 jaar geleden stenen gebruikt om een soort reliëf te maken. Experts zeggen dat in de tekening duidelijk een hoofd, tong, romp en ledematen zijn te zien.
Nieuwe Nazcatekening (Yamagata University)
Volgens hoofdonderzoeker Masato Sakai van de Yamagata University gaat het om de afbeelding van een denkbeeldig of mythisch dier. Hij doet al zeven jaar onderzoek in Peru. In juli vorig jaar ontdekte Sakai ook al 24 zandpatronen, schrijftFoxNews.
Bedevaart
Sakai en zijn collega Jorge Olano schrijven op de website van de universiteit: “Tussen de geogliefen is een oud pad ontdekt dat naar het ceremoniële centrum van Cahuachi leidt. We vermoeden dat de geogliefen waarschijnlijk gerelateerd waren aan de bedevaart naar Cahuachi.”
De reusachtige mysterieuze zandmotieven zijn een restant van de Nazcabeschaving. Ze kunnen alleen worden aanschouwd vanuit kleine vliegtuigen.

De Marianentrog is met een diepte van ongeveer 11 kilometer de diepst bekende plek in de oceaan. Er is maar weinig bekend over deze 2400 kilometer lange kloof. Geleidelijk aan leggen wetenschappers dit unieke ecosysteem bloot.
Het Amerikaanse klimaatinstituut NOAA heeft nu een mysterieuze lichtgevende kwal vastgelegd in de trog. Wetenschappers noemen de kwal ‘verbluffend mooi’, meldt het magazine Wired. Ze vermoeden dat het lichtgevende wezen een roofdier is omdat zijn lange tentakels naar buiten zijn gespreid.
De kwal doet nog het meest denken aan een wezen uit de film Avatar van James Cameron, schrijft MNN. De oplichtende gele en rode delen in de kwal zijn geslachtsklieren en ingewanden.
Het diertje, dat ook wel UFO-kwal wordt genoemd, is tijdens één van de expedities van de Okeanos Explorer gespot op circa vier kilometer diepte. De wetenschappers zijn bezig de Marianentrog beter in kaart te brengen.
In maart werd op meer dan vier kilometer diepte al een ‘spookoctopus’ gevonden. Voor de geïnteresseerden: de expeditie, die duurt tot 10 juli, is te volgen via een livestream.

Onderzoeker Robert Hastings heeft de afgelopen vier decennia meer dan 150 veteranen geïnterviewd over hun ervaringen met mysterieuze objecten bij bases waar kernwapens liggen opgeslagen.
In 2010 spraken Amerikaanse oud-militairen tijdens een persconferentie, die rechtstreeks werd uitgezonden door CNN, van mysterieuze storingen op de plekken waar intercontinentale raketten lagen opgeslagen op het moment dat een schijfvormig schip boven de basis was gezien.

Hastings doet in zijn nieuwe documentaire UFOs and Nukes: The Secret Link Revealed onthullingen over UFO-activiteit bij plekken waar kernwapens liggen opgeslagen. Hij levert naar eigen zeggen bewijs dat de dodelijkste wapens op aarde al sinds het moment dat ze zijn ontwikkeld en gebruikt in de gaten worden gehouden door onbekende waarnemers.
Documenten die in de jaren negentig uit Rusland zijn gesmokkeld bevestigen dat UFO’s tijdens de Koude Oorlog erg geïnteresseerd waren in de kernwapens van de Sovjets. Verschillende Amerikaanse oud-militairen claimen daarnaast dat UFO’s in oktober 2010 op grote schaal raketten hebben uitgeschakeld.
Wezens van een andere wereld
Wat wil Hastings bereiken met zijn film? “Mensen informeren. Iemand die over extreem geavanceerde technologie beschikt houdt al decennialang Amerikaanse en Russische kernwapens in de gaten en kan waar nodig zelfs raketten uitschakelen,” zei hij.
“Mijns inziens worden UFO’s bestuurd door wezens van een andere wereld. Deze indrukwekkende en ongelooflijke ontwikkelingen mogen niet geheim worden gehouden door een handvol overheidsfunctionarissen,” aldus Hastings.
A Turkey witness at Antalya reported watching and photographing an oval-shaped UFO hovering over the nearby sea, according to testimony in Case 75759 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness was outside a hotel about 6:37 p.m. on April 3, 2016, when the object was first seen. Robert Spearing Investigated for MUFON International and closed the case as an Unknown.
“We were at the hotel in Kemer-Antalya, sitting and talking with the family,” the witness reported. “Shiny object with strange moves. We thought it was a helium-filled, metallic balloon. It moved north first and then came back and hovered above the sea. I was surprised and then took five shots with my Canon 450d with zoom lens. When you look at the pictures it was like a door opened at the end of the photos. It becomes the known UFO shape and vanished. I say vanished because when I tried to take sixth photo, I could not find it anymore.”
“According to the filed report, the object is described as being 15 degrees above the horizon and remaining in the northeast until it disappeared. The temperature was approximately 77 degrees and winds were at 4.6 mph and out of the west-southwest. The sky was clear.”
Antalya is a resort destination in Turkey and gateway to its southern Mediterranean region, known as the Turquoise Coast for its blue waters. During the Roman era Antalya was a major port city; today a modern metropolis surrounds ancient fortifications. Beaches are flanked by large hotels, and popular outdoor activities include golfing, diving and hiking the 500km Lycian Way footpath.
“After reviewing the witness summary and conducting the database checks,” Spearing stated,“it is determined that the witness observed an Unknown UAV. The witness clearly photographed a metallic object that looked like dentures opening and closing in the sky. When the object was open it looked like a set of dentures. When closed it looked like a silver disk. Object abruptly disappeared. Unusual. Solid metallic object. Hovering. Similar case in Cyprus in 2015 with Case 65827. Photo analysis of photos shows object was in the sky and had a definite outline against sky.”
The Michigan UFO Flap of 1994 occurred in southeastern Ottawa County, near Holland, and involved as many as 300 witnesses.
Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) Michigan Chief Investigator Daniel Snow worked Case 62470 which required reviewing the 1994 flap after one individual came forward reporting that they had premonitions about the events a year before they happened.

Snow provided an overview of the events from 1994 and audio (listen above) of the 911 calls received, and conversations between a 911 operator and the National Weather Service.
“Three hundred witnesses,” Snow recorded in his report, “observed what looked like a string of Christmas lights. The many sightings prompted the Ottawa County dispatch office to contact the Muskegon weather radar operator.”
Snow then attached the ensuing conversation about radar confirmation of about 15 minutes.

“The key points from the conversation are: predominately three large objects moving in unison from Holland, Michigan, southwesterly toward Chicago, object signatures much larger than typical aircraft, not typical precipitation signature and at higher altitudes, 5,000 to 12,000 feet, in a triangular formation of 50 km on a side, disappearing from some sweeps and reappearing on subsequent sweeps, gradually moving to southwest to Chicago.”
Snow went on to rule out ball lightning, Chinese lanterns, and aircraft lighting, and filed the larger case as an Unknown.
“No natural phenomenon or man-made objects are a close fit as a stimulus for these events and the event stimulus remains unknown. The attached police dispatch to weather radar operator audio is an excellent credibility additive for this flap.”

Enkele dagen geleden publiceerden we het verhaal van de jongeman die ’s avonds een stukje gaat lopen en uren later “wakker” wordt op een parkeerplaats.
Hij is niet de enige, want wereldwijd komt dit vaker voor dan je zou denken en het kan in principe, vanuit ons menselijke perspectief, iedereen overkomen.
Volgens een lezer die zelf een aantal keren te maken heeft gehad met buitenaardse ontvoeringen is het duidelijk wat de jongeman uit het verhaal enkele dagen geleden is overkomen.
Ik wil even reageren op jullie stuk over deze jongeman.
Deze jongeman is ontvoerd geweest en het wondje is 1 van de eigenschappen van een ontvoering.
Als kind zijnde tot 2013 heb ik meerdere ontvoeringen meegemaakt en soms heb ik daar herinneringen aan over gehouden.
Toen ik zelf een jaar of 10 was, had ik een raar bultje op mijn rechtervoet op de wreef. De volgende ochtend toen ik wakker werd en mijn sokken wou aantrekken zag ik dat het bultje weg was en de huid had een kuiltje, was flinter dun en donkerroze van kleur.
Mijn vader begreep er ook niets van.
Voor dit geval had ik al vaker gekke dingen meegemaakt.
Echter is dit mij blijven achtervolgen, want waar ik ook heen verhuisde maakte niet uit. Ze wiste mij elke keer te vinden. Ik ben er zeker van minstens 7 keer te zijn ontvoerd en dan misschien nog enkele malen die ik niet kan herinneren.
Zelf ben ik hier nooit bang van geweest, maar je wordt wel slimmer. Tijdsbesef gaat een rol spelen als je dat zelf in de gaten houdt en weet wat je doet op een bepaald moment. Alleen zo kun je relativeren wat er is gebeurd en herinneren wat je als laatste heb gedaan.
Dus weten wat je laatste tijd is en constateren wat je nieuwe tijd is als je je niets meer kan herinneren. Zo kun je ontdekken wat er met je is gebeurd.
Mijn laatste geval was in 2013 toen ik TV zat te kijken het was rond 20.30u en had het journaal gekeken (was afgelopen). Op een gegeven moment kwam ik bij op de bank en zat weer het journaal te kijken en het was toen 20.16u. Ik was even verbaasd maar wist meteen dat het weer zover was geweest.
Zo langzamerhand heb ik in de loop der jaren vage beelden kunnen zien en heb gezien wat ze doen. Het maakt ook niet uit waar je bent, ze kunnen je zo uit je huis halen.
Ik kan alleen deze jongeman adviseren het te accepteren. Als je dat namelijk niet doet loop je achter de feiten aan en als je niet oppast zit je binnen de kortste keren aan de pillen. (terwijl je niets mankeert) Dat hebben ze bij mij ook getracht, de zielenknijpers.
NIET DOEN DUS!!!!!!! Accepteer het en leef verder.

Scientists scrutinize past supereruptions, as well as smaller volcanic blasts, to predict what would happen if the Yellowstone Volcano did blow.
Here's a deeper look at whether Yellowstone's volcano would fire up a global catastrophe.
Probing Yellowstone's past
Most of Yellowstone National Park sits inside three overlapping calderas. The shallow, bowl-shaped depressions formed when an underground magma chamber erupted at Yellowstone. Each time, so much material spewed out that the ground collapsed downward, creating a caldera. The massive blasts struck 2.1 million, 1.3 million and 640,000 years ago. If a future supereruption resembles its predecessors, then flowing lava won't be much of a threat. The older Yellowstone lava flows never traveled much farther than the park boundaries, according to the USGS. For volcanologists, the biggest worry is wind-flung ash. Imagine a circle about 500 miles (800 kilometers) across surrounding Yellowstone; studies suggest the region inside this circle might see more than 4 inches (10 centimeters) of ash on the ground, scientists reported Aug. 27, 2014, in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.
The ash would be pretty devastating for the United States, scientists predict. The fallout would include short-term destruction of Midwest agriculture, and rivers and streams would be clogged by gray muck.
People living in the Pacific Northwest might also be choking on Yellowstone's fallout.
"People who live upwind from eruptions need to be concerned about the big ones," said Larry Mastin, a USGS volcanologist and lead author of the 2014 ash study. Big eruptions often spawn giant umbrella clouds that push ash upwind across half the continent, Mastin said. These clouds get their name because the broad, flat cloud hovering over the volcano resembles an umbrella. "An umbrella cloud fundamentally changes how ash is distributed," Mastin said.
But California and Florida, which grow most of the country's fruits and vegetables, would see only a dusting of ash.
A smelly climate shift
Yellowstone Volcano's next supereruption is likely to spew vast quantities of gases such as sulfur dioxide, which forms a sulfur aerosol that absorbs sunlight and reflects some of it back to space. The resulting climate cooling could last up to a decade. The temporary climate shift could alter rainfall patterns, and, along with severe frosts, cause widespread crop losses and famine.
The walls of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone are made up predominantly of lava and rocks from a supereruption some 500,000 years ago.
"Are we all going to die if Yellowstone erupts? Almost certainly the answer is no," said Jamie Farrell, a Yellowstone expert and assistant research professor at the University of Utah. "There have been quite a few supereruptions in the past couple million years, and we're still around."
However, scientists agree there is still much to learn about the global effects of supereruptions. The problem is that these massive outbursts are rare, striking somewhere on Earth only once or twice every million years, one study found. "We know from the geologic evidence that these were huge eruptions, but most of them occurred long enough in the past that we don't have much detail on what their consequences were," Mastin said. "These events have been so infrequent that our advice has been not to worry about it."
A far more likely damage scenario comes from the less predictable hazards — large earthquakes and hydrothermal blasts in the areas where tourists roam. "These pose a huge hazard and could have a huge impact on people," Farrell said.
Supereruption reports are exaggerated
Human civilization will surely survive a supereruption, so let's bust another myth. There is no pool of molten rock churning beneath Yellowstone's iconic geysers and mud pots. The Earth's crust and mantle beneath Yellowstone are indeed hot, but they are mostly solid, with small pockets of molten rock scattered throughout, like water inside a sponge. About 9 percent of the hot blob is molten, and the rest is solid, scientists reported on May 15, 2015, in the journal Science. This magma chamber rests between 3 to 6 miles (5 to 10 km) beneath the park.
Estimates vary, but a magma chamber may need to reach about 50 percent melt before molten rock collects and forces its way out. "It doesn't look like at this point that the [Yellowstone] magma reservoir is ready for an eruption," said Farrell, co-author of the 2015 study in the journal Science. [Can You Outrun a Supervolcano? How do researchers measure the magma? Seismic waves travel more slowly through hot or partially molten rock than they do through normal rock, so scientists can see where the magma is stored, and how much is there, by mapping out where seismic waves travel more slowly, Farrell said.
The magma storage region is not growing in size, either, at least for as long as scientists have monitored the park's underground. "It's always been this size, it's just we're getting better at seeing it," Farrell said.
Watch out for little eruptions
As with magma mapping, the science of forecasting volcanic eruptions is always improving. Most scientists think that magma buildup would be detectable for weeks, maybe years, preceding a major Yellowstone eruption. Warning signs would include distinctive earthquake swarms, gas emissions and rapid ground deformation.
Someone who knows about these warning signals might look at the park today and think, "Whoa, something weird is going on!" Yellowstone is a living volcano, and there are always small earthquakes causing tremors, and gas seeping from the ground. The volcano even breathes — the ground surface swells and sinks as gases and fluids move around the volcanic "plumbing" system beneath the park.
But the day-to-day shaking in the park does not portend doom. The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory has never seen warning signs of an impending eruption at the park, according to the USGS.
What are scientists looking for? For one, the distinctive earthquakes triggered by moving molten rock. Magma tunneling underground sets off seismic signals that are different from those generated by slipping fault lines. "We would see earthquakes moving in a pattern and getting shallower and shallower," Farrell said. To learn about the earthquake patterns to look for, revisit the 2014 eruption of Bardarbunga Volcano in Iceland. Both amateurs and experts "watched" Bardarbunga's magma rise underground by tracking earthquakes. The eventual surface breakthrough was almost immediately announced on Twitter and other social media. As with Iceland, all of Yellowstone's seismic data is publicly available through the U.S. Geological Survey's Yellowstone Volcano Observatory and the University of Utah.
"We would have a good idea that magma is moving up into the shallow depths," Farrell said. "The bottom line is, we don't know when or if it will erupt again, but we would have adequate warning."
Within the field of Ufology there are longstanding rumors that the May 22, 1949 death of James Forrestal – the first U.S. Secretary of Defense – was linked to the UFO phenomenon. So the story goes, while suffering from severe depression and anxiety, and ultimately spiraling into a complete nervous breakdown (as a result of his exposure to what the U.S. Government knew about UFOs), Forrestal was on the verge of revealing his knowledge of an alien presence on Earth. The theory continues that powerful figures decided such a thing simply could not be allowed to occur. The result was that Forrestal had to go. And “go,” he certainly did: out of a window. In the early hours of May 22, Forrestal plunged to his death from the 16th floor of the Bethesda Naval Hospital. The big question is: was he pushed or did he jump?
Of course, there’s no hard proof in the public domain that Forrestal was briefed on the more sensational and top secret aspects of the UFO phenomenon. Although, logic dictates that he would have been briefed (at least to some degree), since he accepted the position of Secretary of Defense in 1947 – the year in which the flying saucer was “born” and when the military was indeed taking the mysterious matter very seriously. Even outside of Ufology, there are suspicions that Forrestal’s death was no suicide. But, that’s not the focus of this article. Rather, the focus is on something that happenedbefore Forrestal died and prior to his admittance to Bethesda on April 2, 1949.
Just a few days before he ended up in the naval hospital, Forrestal had a curious experience which had distinct Men in Black overtones attached to it. On the day in question, Forrestal received a visit from one of his friends, a man named Ferdinand Eberstadt, someone who was deeply concerned about Forrestal’s fragile and paranoid state of mind. Eberstadt (a lawyer, a banker, and the author of a historic 1945 document, “Task Force Report on National Security Organization”) was floored by what he saw when he arrived at Forrestal’s home. All of the curtains were closed. Forrestal told his friend – in hushed tones – that listening-devices were all over the house. Sinister characters were watching his every move. His life was in danger.

To demonstrate this to Eberstadt, Forrestal carefully opened one of the blinds and pointed, knowingly, in the direction of a pair of shabbily-dressed men on the street-corner. “They” were a part of it, Forrestal assured Eberstadt. In no time at all, the doorbell to Forrestal’s home was heard ringing. The last thing Forrestal wanted to do was answer the door. Fortunately, one of his staff was on hand to do exactly that. A brief conversation took place, but which neither Forrestal nor Eberstadt were able to hear. The facts, however, quickly came to Forrestal from his houseboy.
According to what the two men were told, the visitor at the door was trying to generate support that would hopefully allow him to become postmaster in his hometown. Could he come in and speak with Forrestal and have him offer some help and advice? Due to Forrestal’s fraught state of mind, the man was sent packing. Eberstadt and Forrestal watched carefully as the man walked directly towards the two badly-dressed men thatalready had Forrestal in a state of turmoil. It was even more evidence of a conspiracy against him, Forrestal grimly concluded, when he saw the three clearly engaging in conversation.
Maybe the whole thing was blown out of proportion by a man descending into a collective state of paranoia, fear, and nervous collapse. Certainly, that’s what happened. But, it’s worth noting that this odd affair, which occurred during Eberstadt’s visit, has several Men in Back-themed parallels to it. First, the Men in Black are typically described as looking not quite right: they are extremely pale-skinned, they often have bulging eyes (hidden behind wraparound shades), and (very bizarrely) are at times described as wearing wigs and make-up. Forrestal’s visitor on the day in question was described by his staff as very odd-looking.
That the man tried to gain access to Forrestal’s home – by claiming to be seeking support for a potential job as a postmaster – mirrors the 1960s-era reports of MIBfinding ways into the homes of UFO witnesses by claiming to be military personnel or police officers. In the same time-frame, Women in Black were posing as census-takers and as gypsies. They were clearly neither. The MIB are often described as wearing clothes that are shabby, dirty, and which occasionally give off an odor like dirt. The two characters that the “odd-looking” man walked towards (and began speaking to) were badly dressed. And, of course, there’s the fact that the men amounted to a trio. Particularly in the 1950s and the 1960s, the MIB turned up in threes. See, for example, Albert Bender’s book, Flying Saucers and the Three Men.
It must be stressed that none of this proves James Forrestal was murdered because of what he knew about the UFO phenomenon (or even because he may have been on the verge of revealing his knowledge to the world). It must be said, however, that the day in question was a very weird one. And not just for Forrestal, but also for Eberstadt. Even he had to admit it was all a bit odd. And, it’s worth noting the words of Dennis Stacy – a long-time and well-respected figure in Ufology, and who runs Anomalist Books with Patrick Huyghe. Of that MIB-like affair, Stacy observed in a 1993 article for Flying Saucer Review magazine titled “Forrestal’s Fall: Did He Jump, or Was He Pushed?” that “…the whole thing has the appearance of a one-act play staged for Forrestal’s ‘benefit.'”
Notably, Stacy added that the affair “begins to smack of orchestration aimed at unsettling an already unstable Forrestal.” Thought-provoking words, indeed.
