The Martian moon Phobos orbits only a few thousand miles above the Red Planet's surface. Its proximity to its planet is one of the reasons astronomers were unable to see the satellite until the late 19th century. In fact, the moon is getting closer to Marsover the centuries, and eventually will either break up or be pulled into the Martian surface.

In the early 17th century, German astronomer Johannes Kepler proposed that Mars might host two moons, given that it lay between the Earth and Jupiter, which were known to have one and four satellites. No evidence of such moons could be found. Although most people thought that Mars had no moons, American astronomer Asaph Hall performed a methodical study from the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., searching closer to the planet than previous surveys.
After searching without success, a frustrated Hall was about to give up, but his wife, Angelina, urged him to continue. The next night, August 12, 1877, he discovered the moon that would later be known as Deimos. Six days later, he found Phobos as well. The two moons lay so close to the planet that they were hidden by the glare of Mars. Asteroid-size, they are also two of the smallest moons in the solar system, with the larger Phobos 7.24 times as massive as its companion, Deimos.
In Greek mythology, Phobos was one of the sons of the god of war Ares (Mars to the Romans). The twin sons attended their father in battle. Phobos means fear (as in phobia), while Deimos means flight (especially in the sense of fleeing after a defeat), according to NASA.

It took almost another century for scientists to begin to understand the two tiny Martian moons. In 1971, NASA's Mariner 9 spacecraft became the first manmade satellite to orbit another planet. Images from the craft revealed that both Phobos and Deimos have lumpy, potato-like shapes, rather than spherical like most moons. Observations of Phobos were limited by the tidal locking of the moon to the planet, resulting in the same side always facing outward.
As the exploration of continued, scientists were able to learn more information about the satellites circling Mars. The Viking orbiters flew by in the late 1970s. The Soviet Phobos 2 mission, NASA's Mars Global Surveyor, and the European Mars Express all provided more clues about the two curious moons. Rovers from the planet's surface even got in on the act, with Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity all providing images from the ground. NASA's MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission) has also imaged the moon to try to learn more about Phobos' composition.
In 2011, Russia attempted to send a mission to the Martian moon called Phobos-Grunt, which was supposed to come back to Earth in 2014 bearing a small sample of the moon. The spacecraft, however, was marooned in Earth orbit due to issues with its rocket. Phobos-Grunt fell back to Earth in early 2012 and crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
NASA may not be finished with Phobos yet. The space agency is considering the Phobos Surveyor mission, which would deploy small, hedgehog-like probes to the surface of the moon. The mission is funded under NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts program, which looks at concepts that could be decades away from flight.
One of the competing concepts for NASA's next low-cost, Discovery-class mission selection (expected to be completed in 2016) would explore both Martian moons. Called PADME (Phobos And Deimos and Mars Environment), the spacecraft would try to figure out where the moons came from — the asteroid belt, by forming around Mars, or other scenarios. If selected, this mission would launch in 2020 and arrive in 2021.
Some human spaceflight proponents have also suggested NASA should land people on Phobos before Mars; NASA hopes to have a human mission sent there by the 2030s.
The examination of Phobos and its companion revealed more than their odd, non-spherical shapes. The two moons are dark gray in color, and heavily cratered. The moons are some of the darkest, least reflective objects in the solar system.
After observing the pair, scientists concluded that they were made of material similar to Type I or II carbonaceous chondrites, the material that makes up asteroids and dwarf planets. The composition and odd shape led some scientists to conclude that Phobos and Deimos came from the asteroid belt, with Jupiter's gravity long ago nudging them into orbit around Mars.
However, scientists aren't certain that the asteroid belt is the source of the moons' birth. Both have a nearly circular orbit unusual for captured objects. The thin atmosphere of Mars would have a hard time providing the necessary braking to settle the pair into their present-day orbits. Similarly, the moons are not as dense as objects in the asteroid belt.
Instead, the moons may have formed as satellites around Mars, with dust and rock drawn together by gravity.
A more violent birth may have occurred by collision. A large impactor smashing into the red planet could have sent pieces flying into the air, where gravity may have drawn them together. An existing moon might also have been destroyed, creating the rubble that later formed Phobos and Deimos.
Traveling only 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) above the Martian surface, Phobos flies around the Red Planet three times a day. Crossing the sky in about four hours, the moon appears to rise in the west and set in the east.
Many science fiction films feature large moons dominating alien skies, but despite its proximity to its planet, Phobos is only a third as wide as the full moon seen from Earth. On the other hand, Mars dominates the horizon of Phobos, taking up a fourth of the sky.
Doomed
But Phobos won't zip around Mars forever. The doomed moon is spiraling inward at a rate of 1.8 centimeters (seven-tenths of an inch) per year, or 1.8 meters (about 6 feet) each century. Within 50 million years, the moon will either collide with its parent planet or be torn into rubble and scattered as a ring around Mars.
The unusual characteristics of Phobos, including its decaying orbit, led some scientists in the 1950s and 1960s to conclude that it was artificial. One prominent proponent was the science adviser to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Further examination revealed that the moon bears stronger resemblance to a rubble pile than an artificial satellite, and images sent back from orbiting craft show that it formed in nature.
On the surface
The larger of the two moons, Phobos has a diameter of 10 by 14 by 11 miles (17 by 22 by 18 km). The surface is covered with a dusty powder 3 feet (1 meter) thick, likely caused by meteor bombardment.
A large impact crater dominates the moon. Stretching nearly 6 miles (9.5 km), Stickney Crater covers most of the surface. The impact that formed it likely caused many secondary impacts, as rocks flew up and fell back to Phobos. The crater bears the maiden name of Hall's encouraging wife.
The moon is marred by long grooves. In 2015, a NASA-led study suggested that the grooves on Phobos are actually early signs of the moon breaking apart due to tidal stresses induced by Mars' gravity. Another theory stated that the grooves could be remnants of a huge impact that left behind the crater Stickney, but the grooves did not center on this crater. Another explanation is the moon's grooves could come from material displaced from Mars that hits Phobos' surface, which was espoused in an Open University study published in 2014.
Temperatures vary on Phobos, reaching highs of 25 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 4 degrees Celsius) during the day, while nights can be as cold as minus 170 degrees F (minus 112 degrees C).
The moon is so small that a 150-pound person standing on its surface would weigh only two ounces.

If Pluto's subsurface ocean had frozen over completely, it would have formed highly pressurized ice that would have caused the dwarf planet to shrink, according to new research. The canyons and valleys on Pluto seem to have formed as the dwarf planet swelled up, rather than as it shrank, indicating that a liquid ocean most likely sits beneath the thick ice crust today, researchers said in the study.
"Thanks to the incredible data returned by [NASA's New Horizons mission], we were able to observe tectonic features on Pluto's surface [and] update our thermal evolution model with new data," Noah Hammond, a graduate student at Brown University, said in a statement from the school. Hammond worked with his advisers — Amy Barr, of the Planetary Science Institute, and Marc Parmentier, also at Brown — to study the likelihood that a liquid ocean hides beneath Pluto's surface. A wealth of oceans
When the New Horizons probe flew past Pluto last July, its images of the dwarf planet's surface revealed deep faults, or fractures in the surface, hundreds of kilometers long, according to the statement from Brown. The long canyons appeared to form as Pluto's crust expanded, Hammond said. "A subsurface ocean that was slowly freezing over would cause this kind of expansion," he said.
It didn't take long for scientists to conclude that Pluto once housed an ocean, but the question of whether it had already frozen over remained. Using updated measurements of Pluto's diameter and density, Hammond's model revealed that a frozen ocean beneath the crust would have changed from conventional water ice to a more compact, crystallized structure known as "ice II." As the ice changed, the frozen ocean would have shrunk, creating an entirely different type of feature known as compressional fractures, which are not seen on Pluto's surface.
Long geologic faults on Pluto's surface suggest that a liquid ocean once existed beneath its surface. New research suggests that ocean still splashes today.

"We don't see the things on the surface we'd expect if there had been a global contraction," Hammond said. "So we conclude that ice II has not formed, and therefore that the ocean hasn't completely frozen."
Ice II would have formed only if the dwarf planet's shell were at least 160 miles (260 kilometers) thick, putting sufficient pressure on the underlying ice, the statement said. Under the thinner shell, the ocean could have remained regular ice, not shrinking at all.
Hammond's model suggests that the shell might be closer to 190 miles (300 km) thick, thanks to high temperatures in the core, according to the paper. The addition of nitrogen and methane ice spotted on the surface of the tiny world may also help keep the water warm.
"Those exotic ices are actually good insulators," Hammond said.
That means oceans could lie not only inside tiny Pluto but also in other similar worlds in the far reaches of the Kuiper Belt, the sphere of ice and rock at the edge of the solar system.
"That's amazing to me," Hammond said. "The possibility that you could have vast liquid water ocean habitats so far from the sun on Pluto — and that the same could also be possible on other Kuiper Belt objects as well — is absolutely incredible."

The Hollywood blockbuster Independence Day: Resurgence has arrived at the cinema.
As a $165m sequel to the original film, released 20 years ago, the newly-released action movie sees the Earth attacked by huge alien spaceships piloted by malign locust-like extraterrestrials bent on taking over our planet.
The stuff of extreme fantasy? Let’s hope so!
But since 1947, and the famous ‘Roswell’ incident in the United States - when a crashed flying saucer and its alien passengers were reportedly captured by the Army - sightings of UFOs around the world have been persistent and plentiful.

The North East has its own dossier of strange and unexplained phenomena, but do these strange appearances in our skies across the decades have a logical, mundane explanation - or has ET been paying sneaky visits to Geordieland?

Here, we recall 14 intriguing UFO stories from the Chronicle’s archive.
1. In 1940, Robert Hall claimed to have been abducted by aliens from a back lane in Bensham, Gateshead. He was “taken on board a spaceship by a group of grey, horrible- looking creatures.”
2. In 1951, The Chronicle received numerous calls about a “flying pencil” in Newcastle and produced an artist’s impression.
3. During the 1960s, strange sightings in the sky over Gateshead included a sliver saucer the size of a car, shining pink discs, shimmering silver objects and a roving fireball.
4. In 1964, there were mysterious sights on Gateshead’s Leam Lane Estate. Three “egg-shaped” objects were reported in the night sky by a schoolboy. Children in the area later said they saw “little green men”.
5. In 1971, a retired teacher reported a giant object hovering over Alnwick Castle. She said: “It was shaped like a fat cigar, black and with a luminous green strip around its edge. It was easily the length of the castle in the sky. I was amazed.”
6. In 1972, the Chronicle carried a report about a massive silver-coloured flying saucer “as big as five or six jumbo jets” according to one witness, hovering over Westerhope.

7. Also in the 1970s, a Newcastle teacher saw a UFO heading east, high over Denton Bank: “It stopped just over the horizon and was stationary for about 10 seconds. Then it vanished in a low cloud, but left vapour trails visible for about seven minutes. It was a tremendous size.”
8. In 1977, a Flight Lieutenant based at RAF Boulmer reported seeing “bright objects hanging over the sea” including an object that was “luminous, round and four to five times larger than a helicopter”. Other servicemen observed the strange craft and reported the sighting to commanding officers.
9. In 1978, a 21-year-old nurse told us how she watched a small, “deafening” UFO that resembled a “cigar tin” glide between her house and her next-door neighbour’s in Killingworth.
10. In 1979, families in Ashington’s Woodbridge Estate ran into the streets to watch a “saucer-shaped” object hovering above their homes. It was described as a “large silver dome with yellow lights underneath”.
11. In 1980, a 61-year-old woman and her son, 25, were walking through a Jarrow park when, she says, they were “buzzed” by a flying two-foot glowing orange ball which hovered just a few feet away from them.
12. In 1981 , a Felling housewife told the Chronicle how she’d been terrified by a group of 12 two-feet tall “doll-like” aliens who appeared in her bedroom at 4 in the morning.
13. In 2004, a Gateshead vicar photographed a bright object hovering in the night sky. He said: “It was hovering from left to right, and was extremely smooth...then the light just turned off as if it was still there, but hidden.”
14. In 2015, a Tynemouth man filmed a dome-shaped object with pulsating lights hovering over the North East coast. Other people reported seeing the same UFO.

Roswell, New Mexico is about three hours south of my parents’ home in Albuquerque. The trip between cities cuts through a wasteland of red sand, and I40 is punctuated by a handful of Podunk towns — Moriarty, Vaughn — whose inhabitants make monthly, several-hour-long trips to Walmart for provisions. New Mexico fancies itself the “Land of Enchantment”, and Roswell is its southernmost fever dream (discounting Las Cruces), where enchanted fans of American kitsch and truly deranged victims of “extraterrestrial abduction” gather annually for the UFO Festival. I have witnessed this event enough times to make several conclusions on the way we talk about aliens – just North of the border.
The most fascinating part of the UFO Fest is the friction that occurs between true believers and the goofy tourists who drove into Roswell expecting a family friendly craft fair. The Fest straddles the line between satisfying believers and tourists as best it can, but it’s no Jean Claude Van Damme.
Both groups are equally committed to attending the Fest, and their sub-events don’t really overlap. It’s easy to stumble between the kids’ costume contest at Roswell High School and the support group for former abductees, which is held in a windowless room on Main Street. I’ve been to both, and they’re equally enthralling.

Aliens: for families!
The costume contest pits face-painted children against dour, adult cosplayers, and every competitor lines up onstage to have their get-ups analyzed. I’ve seen Invader Zims, E.T.s, Transformers and classic little green men – but, disappointingly, never the guys from Earth Girls Are Easy.
Though they compete in separate categories, the children and adults line up backstage at the local high school, sipping water through their foam masks and shuffling around until their numbers are called. On one occasion, I tried to infiltrate the group to take photos, but I was quickly ushered back into the auditorium by an angry woman wearing sparkly antennae.
The expression on the small girl in the UFO wagon encapsulates how I felt about most of the festival.
The auditorium offers an escape from Southwest heat, which any local will insist is preferable to the rest of America’s weather, given that “it’s a dry heat, not muggy.” The costume contest in 2012 also featured a talent show, in which a group of elderly women shuffled onstage and performed painfully simple choreography to songs featuring the word “alien”.
In my memory, that dance went on for three hours. I also remember someone’s baby, painted blue and sitting in a stroller mocked up to look like a UFO, being the crowd favorite. In our heat delirium, we started to chant in support of the blue baby. I don’t remember it going over well, but then, that’s the UFO Festival, where everything’s funny but no one’s in on the joke.

The dead serious side of UFO talk
There’s no reliable way to count how many people walking among us believe they’ve come in contact with extraterrestrial life, but at the UFO Fest, those people are the majority. A huge crowd gathers to swap stories and listen to experts on alien-related subjects ranging from SyFy programming to the actual classification of alien types witnessed by believers.

While those who reference “watchers” usually describe feeling paranoid — the “watcher” concept argues that aliens have always been among us, and that they simply observe human behavior without interfering — most believers in Roswell are particularly transfixed with “reptilians”, which the guide below (published at the UFO Museum) calls “Mantis”.
An often repeated phrase at the Festival is, “Reptilians act as bodyguards.” I heard this multiple times, from guest speakers and random believers sorting through novelty t-shirts, as if everyone in the entire town had agreed upon a single thing regarding extraterrestrials. Not only do they definitely exist, but their social structure decrees that reptilian aliens are without empathy and often assigned physical tasks, like protecting the UFO.
Many, many Festivalgoers reference this guide to extraterrestrial life. "Greys" are the most popular by far.
One particular guest speaker, Travis Walton, who presented his experiences with aliens at my last visit to the Fest, maintained that extraterrestrials abducted him temporarily, back in the 70s. Colloquially, run-ins with aliens are typically referred to as “incidents”, as in the ”Roswell Incident” on which the Festival is based. In 1947, an unidentified aircraft crashed just outside Roswell. Though the government called the craft a “United States Air Force surveillance balloon”, a strongly willed group of dissenters alleged that it was, in fact, an extraterrestrial ship that was later hidden in Area 51. The “Roswell Incident” is canon in the town today; the documents released regarding the crash are damn near scripture.
There is a particular sensation that accompanies visiting Roswell, a sort of prickly discomfort mixed with excitement, and that feeling was live and loud while I watched this man speak. When he cleared his throat into the mic to begin, I saw the woman next to me clutch her copy of The Walton Experience, Walton’s autobiography, which was adapted into a film called Fire In the Sky.
Walton asked the crowd, which included my sister and me, to raise our hands if we had ever seen an alien. Almost every single person in the room raised his or her hand – except my sister and me. “That’s great,” he said, “now keep your hand up if you’ve been on board an alien ship.” I cannot emphasize enough how strange it was to see maybe 10, 20 hands remain in the air, each hand leading down a trembling arm to a distraught-looking person. Aliens, I came to realize visiting Roswell, stop being a fun concept once a person believes they’ve been abducted.
People who come to Roswell seeking answers to what they believe are questions borne of actual alien contact do not typically wear the kitschy, gift-shop clothing available on every street corner. A true believer wouldn’t wear the t-shirt I bought, for instance, as an alien-themed Mexican restaurant which says, in glow-in-the-dark letters, “Our Tacos Are c-ALIEN-te!” A true believer makes the pilgrimage to Roswell, America’s alien mecca, to commune with those who believe them. They just happen to hold their somber support groups in the same town, on the same day, as the fun family light parade.

An Annual Visit
The 2016 UFO Festival is happening again this summer, from June 30th to July 3rd. Though I won’t be in attendance, I have noted that the guest speaker line-upstill includes Travis Walton, alongside actors, scholars and those who profess to have communicated with extraterrestrial life.
It makes perfect sense, culturally, for the UFO Festival to occur annually in New Mexico, a state marked by both the mixing of cultures — Mexican, Native American, white Megachurch-attending bible thumpers, hippies who want to live out Georgia O’Keeffe’s dream — and a dreamy sensibility that evades calling anyone’s opinion “incorrect”.
It’s not like a New Mexican to call her neighbor crazy, so Roswell’s annual event continues on, both satirical and earnest in its construction. Even if you haven’t been on board a UFO and aren’t looking for a community of fellow abductees, the Fest is worth visiting for the Alien Pet Costume Parade alone.

World UFO day is observed on June 24 to mark the day of the first UFO sighting by aviator Kenneth Arnold. UFO stands for unidentified flying object, most of which just happen to be defence aircraft of a country straying into the air territory of another. However, before it can be identified as such, the UFO alarms already start ringing, giving rise to modern-day urban UFO legends. However, 5-20 per cent of sightings go unexplained each year. Here are some of the most baffling — some unexplained — UFO sightings in history.

1. Roswell Incident (1947):
The most popular of UFO-lore, it is the first recorded ‘UFO crash’ outside a ranch in Roswell, New Mexico. Speculation spread like wildfire for a pre-Internet time. Alien invasion theories floated around until the US military stepped in and clarified that the debris came from a crashed experimental weather balloon.
Until their deaths in the 1990s, Evelyn and Paul Trent earnestly insisted that the photos they captured were of an actual UFO.

2. McMinnville incident, Oregon, Canada (1950):
Evelyn Trent first spotted a silvery, metallic disk in the early evening sky when she was outside feeding her rabbits. Her farmer-husband watched for a couple of minutes and then decided to take two pictures before the UFO disappeared. The Trents shied away from all publicity and refused to sell the pictures to the media, preferring to keep the news private to avoid getting into trouble with the government. Only one local reporter got lucky. While attempts have been made to examine the photographs for any trickery, none has succeeded so far. Until their deaths in the 1990s, Evelyn and Paul Trent earnestly insisted that the photos were of an actual UFO.
3. Manbhum, Bihar, India (1957):
At least 800 villagers of Kadori, Borsa and Mangalda came out of their huts to witness a sight very strange to them. A flying-saucer-like UFO descended to a height of 500ft above ground, whirring like a motorcar engine. It hovered mid-air for a few minutes and took off at an incredible speed, leaving behind a lot of smoke.
Barney and Betty Hill reported ‘symptoms’ of alien abduction after sighting strange lights on a trip back from Canada. Investigation — which also involved hypnosis — came to the conclusion that they were subject to various lab tests by the aliens. Both of them recounted experiences of being examined by grey aliens.
Residents of Las Rosas, Gran Canaria, reported seeing a gigantic, translucent blue sphere hovering just above ground level. They saw two figures in the gigantic sphere, measuring 30m in diameter. The figures looked like humanoids. The sphere grew larger and larger before ultimately disappearing into the sky. At 9.27pm on the same night, the Navy personnel reported a strange light travelling along the horizon that later split into two distinct objects.
On September 19, 1976, the Iranian air force received frantic calls about a strange light shining in Tehran. Fearing an enemy attack, the Iranian air Force dispatched two F-4 pilots for initial investigation. The pilots reported strange technical activity upon return. The first pilot’s aircraft system began to fail as he approached the UFO. Deciding to abort the mission, the aircraft regained full functioning capacity as soon as he returned. It gets even bizarre with the second one. The UFO launched a defensive attack — a bright beam of light — on the aircraft, which missed due to an evasive manoeuvre executed by the pilot. Tehran was witness to the typical alien-invasion signs — knocked out communications systems, loss of power supply and widespread mayhem on the ground — as the UFO continued to chase the aircraft across Tehran’s skies.

7. Rendlesham forest UFO landing (1980):
Jointly operating US-UK air bases at Bentwaters and Woodbridge in the UK were on alert upon being buzzed by a UFO for several nights in 1980. On 27 December, the UFO seemed to have closed in for an encounter at Rendlesham forest as the locals started reporting strange lights in the area. The security patrol on duty found a saucer-shaped craft hovering a short distance off the ground. Moreover, they even saw grey aliens who seemed to be working on it. Those who did approach closer to investigate reported experiencing symptoms of altered reality — such as time displacement, “reality bending” phenomena and bizarre atmospheric anomalies.
makes this one stand apart are the sheer number of people who reported them, and the fact the flying saucers in this case weren’t circular discs, but triangular in shape. What made it eerie was that these UFOs didn’t make any sound as they hovered over the city. Some of them were reportedly so large that witnesses described them as a “floating city”.
9. Japan Air Lines Flight 1628 (1986):
The crew of the Tokyo-bound flight from Paris was accompanied by more than one UFO for almost an hour as the Boeing 747 cargo carrier transited the skies over Alaska. The UFOs made motions that suggested gravity had no effect on them whatsoever. Air traffic controllers were not able to detect any UFO activity around the Boeing despite repeated assurances by the crew. The pilot, Captain Kenju Terauchi, is as credible a source one could find as he had served as a fighter pilot and logged more than 10,000 hours in flight.
A straight-out-of-a-Sci-Fi-movie fireball terrorised the residents of Kolkata in 2007. At 3.30am on October 29, witnesses described the gigantic object as a shape-shifting, vanishing ball of fire streaking over the sky. Scientists tried to pin a natural-cosmic-phenomenon tag on it — including a meteor — but ultimately agreed the shape-shifting ability made it hard to identify its origins.

Recently, a mysterious object flared to life and left scientists in awe. It outshines our entire galaxy by FIFTY times, and to date, astronomers are not sure what it is.
Astronomers are not really sure what the mysterious object, that outshines our Milky Way Galaxy by fifty times actually is. While many suspect that the object is, in fact, the result of superluminous supernovae, making it the most powerful one ever seen, there is still a bit of skepticism in the scientific community.
Scientists believe that this discovery “may lead to new thinking and new observations of the whole class of superluminous supernova.” (Source)
It was way back in June 2015 that researchers spotted a ‘ball of hot gas’ located BILLIONS of light years away from our sun. It was radiating with a staggering energy of HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of suns.
Researchers have been left in awe. At its heart, researchers have identified an object believed to be some 10 miles across. The object is known as ASAS-SN-15lh and is twice as luminous as any other object previously identified by astronomers. (ASAS-SN is the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae)
It is also far brighter than an ordinary supernova, but it happens to outside our galaxy, the Milky Way by FIFTY TIMES!
Todd Thompson, a professor of astronomy at Ohio State, explained that if this is, in fact, a magnetar, it would have to spin at least 1,000 times in a second, converting the rotational energy to light with nearly 100 percent of efficiency. It would be the most extreme example of a magnetar that scientists believe is physically possible in our universe.
Now scientists are guessing what the object might be. Initial studies reveal that the object at the center could be a sort of extremely rare Star, referred to by astronomers as a millisecond MAGNETAR. However, this one is so powerful that it pushes the energy limits proposed by conventional physics. A millisecond magnetar is a rapidly spinning and dense star with an extremely powerful magnetic field. (Source)
This fascinating object cannot be seen with the naked eye due to the fact that it is located nearly four billion light years from Earth. However, the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae is able to detect bright objects in our universe that other telescopes cannot.
Since 2014, ASAS-SN has found 250 supernovae. However, none of them are even close to ASAS-SN-15lh. The explosion that fueled ASAS-SN-15lh was 200 times more powerful than an average supernova. It is 570 BILLION times brighter than our Sun, and it was 20 times more luminous than ALL the STARS in our galaxy combined.
“We have to ask, how is that even possible?” said Krzysztof Stanek, professor of astronomy at Ohio State. “It takes a lot of energy to shine that bright and that energy has to come from somewhere.” (Source)
“The honest answer is at this point that we do not know what could be the power source for ASASSN-15lh,” said Subo Dong, lead author of the Science paper and a Youth Qianren Research Professor of Astronomy at the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University. Using the nuclear dating method of Dr. W.D. Urry. from the Carnegie Institution in Washington D.C., scientists discovered that Antarctica’s rivers, sources of fine-dispersed deposits, were flowing as depicted on The Orontius Finaeus map, about 6,000 years ago. About 4000 years B. C., glacial sediments started to accumulate.
Is it possible that the lost civilization of Atlantis is buried beneath the Ice of Antarctica?
Antarctica and Atlantis are two words commonly used in the same phrase. It’s not a mystery that many people firmly believe that Atlantis did, in fact, exist on Earth, and Antartica might just be the right place where we should search for Atlantis.
But while Plato was the first to write about the lost city-continent of Atlantis, its noteworthy to mention that many Native American legends are reminiscent of what Plato sustained in the distant past, reinforcing suspicion that Atlantis could have existed.
The legends of Native Americans come from different cultures separated by vast distances and isolated from one another. However, all of them tell a similar story of a once fallen civilization that existed in the distant past. In Central America, this ancient culture lived in Aztlan. According to legends, Aztlan was located to the south, on a white island and perished without warning as a result of natural catastrophic events. Many researchers maintain that Aztlan means “place of whiteness.” This is why it has commonly been connected to Atlantis and Antarctica, suggesting that Aztlan might have been the mythical Atlantis, the mythical place located to the south.

It is said that after the catastrophic events, the survivors of Atlantis fled to different continents where their ancient civilization ultimately merged with others and disappeared.
Skeptics will rush to discredit any theory linking Atlantis to Antarctica mostly because Antarctica today is a completely inhospitable and frozen environment where civilizations could not flourish. However, in remote antiquity most of Antarctica was hospitable. Proof of that is a number is enigmatic and ancient maps that depict the continent of Antarctica free of Ice. The most famous cartographical chart is without a doubt the famous Piri-Reis map, drawn by an admiral who served in the Navy of the Ancient Ottoman Empire.
Interestingly, the Piri Reis map was based on a number of even older maps which accurately trace the coastline of Antarctica WITHOUT the layer of ice that covers it today. This indicates clearly that whoever had the technology and ability to survey the continent of Antarctica must have done so thousands of years ago before the continent was frozen.
But how can a continent located to the south be free of Ice? Well, it turns out that Antarctica wasn’t always located where it is today. In fact, in the distant past, the continent of Antarctica wasn’t located at the South Pile, but instead somewhere between it and the Equator of our planet. This means that Antarctica was located farther north and experienced a tropical or temperate climate, meaning that it was covered in forests, and inhabited by various ancient life forms. What does this mean? Well… given the little we know about the life on our planet in the distant past, it is likely that people might have lived on this now, icy continent and developed as a society just like people did in Africa, Europe, and Asia.
ut how was this even possible? Thanks to a scientific theory called crustal displacement.
According to mainstream scholars, and the theory of continental drift, the crust of our planet is in fact divided into several tectonic plates that literally ‘float’ over a molted inner layer, Over the ages, these plates slowly bump against one another.
However, the theory of crustal displacement which expands the theory of continental drift, approximately every 40,000 years, the entire crust of our planet shifts as a single unit. After each ‘shift’ all the land masses on our planet, including entire continents are relocated to a new position on the planet.
Many researchers believed that this happened the last time around 10,000 B.C. and caused the continent of Antarctica to move from its position near the equator to its current position, on top of the South Pole.
“I still find the idea that Antarctica was once forested absolutely mind-boggling”,
“We take it for granted that Antarctica has always been a frozen wilderness, but the ice caps only appeared relatively recently in geological history,” told Jane Francis of the University of Leeds.
Today, Antarctica is composed of around ninety-eight percent ice which is over a kilometer thick. So imagine, if in the distant past, ancient people inhabited Antarctica when it was covered with vegetation and forests, all of their “heritage” is now buried under a thick layer of ice. Even though it is uninhabitable today and only scientists venture out to Antarctica, in the distant past it might have been the perfect place for an ancient civilization to develop.

In 1949, Admiral Baird’s expedition bore holes into the Ross Sea in three spots, where Orontius Finaeus marked river-beds. In the cuts, fine-grained layers were found, obviously brought to the sea with rivers whose sources were situated in temperate latitudes (i.e. free of glaciers).The samples were taken from three different locations. 70 deg. 17′ S 178 deg. 15′ W 2,990 M deep, 69 deg. 12′ S 180 deg. S. at 3,130 M. deep, 68 deg. 26′ S 179 deg. 15’W at 3,292 M. deep. (1)
The fine-grained sediment that was found is the sort that is carried by rivers from ice-free continents. Also during the Byrd expedition of 1935 geologists made a rich discovery of fossils on the sides of Mount Weaver (Lat. 86 deg. 58’S) which included leaf and stem impressions and fossilized wood. In 1952 they identified two species of a tree fern called Glossopteris once common to southern continents (Africa, South America, and Australia.)
Core samples taken from the Ross Sea during the Byrd expedition of 1947-1948 shows glacial marine sediment from the present to 6000 years ago. From 6,000 to 15,000 the sediment is fine-grained suggests an absence of ice from the area. Then there is a zone fine-grained sediment from 30,000 to 40,000 years ago, again suggesting that the area was ice free. From 40,000 to 133,550 years ago there are two zones of coarse and two zones of medium-grained texture. While comparing the three samples, two of them show that the end of the temperate period and the beginning of the most recent glacial period started 6,000 years ago and the third just 1,000 years after that. All of this points to the undeniable fact that sometime between the 4th and 12th millennium B.C, there was an extremely advanced civilization on Earth, with great knowledge of navigation, cartography, and astronomy. Their technological advancements were way ahead of other cultures that would appear after them. This ‘lost’ civilization, most definitely preceded our modern civilization by tens of thousands of years. And many people firmly believe that this civilization could have been Atlantis, and evidence of their existence will be found beneath the thick layers of ice that currently cover the continent of Antarctica.

Maurice Sheehan from his plane, when he flew over a gigantic pyramid, described by Col. Maurice Sheehan as having approximate dimensions of 300 meters in height and 450 meters on each side.
It is noteworthy to mention that these dimensions would make the Chinese Pyramid the largest one ever discovered on Earth, dwarfing the Great Pyramid of Giza with a mere 147 meters in height and 320 meters in width

Another NASA Whistleblower has presented a number of images taken by NASA’s Apollo mission Astronauts which show what seem to be extraterrestrial bases on the surface of the moon.
Old Apollo mission images fro a NASA whistleblower’s private collection are believed to contain the ultimate proof of Alien bases on the surface of Earth’s moon.
The images come from the private collection of Ken Johnston, who was a former avionics technician who worked with a number of NASA contractors during the Apollo missions. During his time at NASA working on the Apollo missions, he came across a number of images taken by NASA astronauts during the Apollo missions to the moon which show what seem to be alien bases on the surface.
According to UFO hunters over at Mars Moon Space TV, a video uploaded earlier this month shows a recently released cache of old Apollo images which seem to show Alien bases on the surface of the moon. Ken Johnston is well known among UFO hunters as believed to be one of the most important ‘NASA whistleblowers’ who has come forward with ‘evidence’ of alien activity on the Moon.
In the video uploaded by Mars Moon Space TV, Thomas Jensen speaks about one of the images released from Johnston’s collection which show: “What looks like a base on the moon with visible lights and structures.”
According to Richard Hoagland, who first saw Johnston’s image collection of the Apollo mission in 1995, NASA’s image technicians have been editing original images of the moon for decades in an effort to ‘brush out’ and delete alien structures which are scattered all across the moon. According to Hoagland and others who have managed to take a peek at the images, image scans of Johnston’s collection from the Apollo missions undoubtedly show alien structures on the surface of the Moon, which have been edited removed from publicly available images of the lunar surface.
However, not everyone seems to be convinced with these or other images of the lunar surface where ‘alien’ structures are seemingly present.
Regardless of what skeptics might think, Johnston revealed that he had been ‘ordered’ to destroy the original photos but decided to accept them. Many UFO researchers claim that the images were ordered to be destroyed since NASA does not want society to see any evidence of alien structures on the lunar surface.
In addition to Mars Moon Space TV, YouTube channel Secure Team 10 also featured Johnston’s Apollo mission images containing evidence of alien structures on the moon in one of their videos.
The images in black and white show the Apollo spacecraft flying over the lunar surface. Next to the spacecraft, on the lower left side of the image are mysterious bright spots on the lunar surface which are believed to be part of the alien bases.
According to many, the lights seen in the images appear to be arranged in such a way, suggesting that they are the product of intelligent design.
However, the images of Johnston’s private collection are not the only alleged evidence of alien structures on the moon.
One of the most famous images depicting alien structures on the moon come from NASA’s LCROSS mission to the moon. The main LCROSS mission objective was to explore the presence of water ice in a permanently shadowed crater near a lunar polar region. It was launched together with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) on June 18, 2009, as part of the shared Lunar Precursor Robotic Program, the first American mission to the Moon in over ten years.
But similar mysterious lights from the lunar surface are present in many other images and videos. Not long ago SecureTeam 10 posted a very interesting video which proves there are a number of alien bases on the moon. To back up their claims, SecureTeam10 posted the coordinates of the towering structures on the Moon: 21° 4′ 2.23 N, 148° 39’12.30″ E. If you focus on the area, Ufo hunters claim three massive pillars are visible clearly casting a shadow on the surface of the moon.
Recently, a number of highly ranked government officials, former astronauts military personnel, and scientists have come forward speaking out about the UFO phenomenon and alien life.

Aldrin said that: “On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world.
Millions of people around the globe firmly believe that American astronauts saw and recorded “vestiges of human constructions of antiquity” on the moon and photographed some of the technological evidence found on the surface. After the astronauts brought back the images to Earth. An unusual sighting has recently stirred up the entire UFO community who was on the lookout for more evidence of UFO activity on our planet. As a result, they stumbled upon one of the most interesting catches in recent months.
The moment a man takes his drone for a flight is market by a brisk event that almost ended up tragically…for his drone and budget. Concentrating on filming the nearby heavy storm clouds, Skwty Photography of YouTube accidentally surprises the very moment when a speeding UFO dashes next to his flying device, nearly impacting it.
The sighting is spectacular for various reasons:
The speed at which it travels is beyond that of any flying device this size designed by our human intelligence. It can only be compared to a projectile, but as you are about to see, there is more than one such appearance.
The first hasty UFO darts from the ground, almost like being launched by something. It’s not aimed at the drone, but a second object passes by in close proximity.
The second UFO sprints from the nearby cloud and barely misses the drone, a behavior similar to that of an otherworldly device that would scan an intruder trespassing its flying perimeter.
Theories suggest a possible baseball ball thrown off the pitch, or even a sneaky golf ball from a nearby field. After all, what would be better than downing drones in your spare time using only a golf club and your aiming skills?
Others have suggested that it could be a consistent chunk of hail coming from the storm clouds found in the vicinity. This would explain the brightness, size and color but not the fact that first UFO originates from the ground, and the same goes for the chance of it being a meteorite.
So what are these mysterious UFOs? Missiles? Rocketing ice? Or something more out of this world?
To better identify the phenomenon, we’ll have to set the dust off the archives and see if similar sightings had ever been recorded. First reminder comes from a reddit user who recalls witnessing a comparable event.
“ a few years ago I was standing by the ocean in Newfoundland on a normal bright sunny day and I thought I saw something like this shoot out of the water. It was maybe a few inches long like this, white and just flew so fast I couldn’t track it,” Greg Hortall wrote on reddit.
“I remember my first thought was that it was a flying fish – but then it kept going in the direction of the sky an impossible speed. It happened so quickly that I thought I was seeing things. My thought later was maybe there’s some kind of a living thing that is so small and moves so quickly, humanity hasn’t “discovered” it yet. Problem with that is, where are the remains when it dies. If it is of alien origin, you’d have to think it would be a good way to survey a planet – send out a few dozen of these tiny things to whip around and measure/capture/photograph everything, and the locals would have no idea.”
And speaking of hidden things, these intriguing little buzzers were captured on film a few years ago. At that time however, they came out of a larger sphere dubbed the ‘orb UFO’. Mr. Crow of YouTube suggested they could be super-intelligent robots that monitor human activity on planet Earth, or even AI morphing devices, but further proof of their existence lacked in the period that followed.
Could these two cases be related? Are these bright projectiles coming from orb UFOs? Are we being monitored by an advanced species of extraterrestrials that’s far beyond our level of understanding?

A New Jersey witness at Barnegat Light reported watching two triangle-shaped UFOs pass over at the tree top level that quickly moved west, according to testimony in Case 76757 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The UFO was moving at the tree top level over Barnegat, NJ.

The reporting witness and her boyfriend were outside barbecuing on a clear night on June 1, 2016.
“My boyfriend observed the object pass over the tree top with multiple colors, triangle shape, lights all around outside, very little to no noise,” the witness stated.

Their research was prompted by the discovery of the first of what are believed to be the world’s largest stone tools on the bed of the lake. Although the first find was made in the 1990s, the discovery of four giant axes has not been scientifically reported until now. Four giant stone hand axes, measuring over 30 cm long and of uncertain age, were recovered from the lake basin. Equally remarkable is that the dry lake floor where they were found is also littered with tens of thousands of other smaller stone-age tools and flakes, the researchers report. Russia is home to a great number of mysteries, each one stranger than the other. The following case is no exception.
Although these particular events have been happening for thousands of years, our story begins in the 1930s, when a Russian researcher of the paranormal named Ilya Grabovsky was exploring strange happenings around Lake Issik Kul, a deep body of water located in the Northern Tian Shan Mountains. “Issik Kul” means “Warm Lake”, a reference to the fact that the lake never freezes, despite being surrounded by icy mountains.
Grabovsky had heard legends about hidden caves in the area so he contacted a local who had inadvertently stumbled into one. At first, the man was reluctant to describe his experience but the paranormal researcher eventually persuaded him to pass the knowledge. He told Grabovsky that he and his friends were fishing on the lake’s northwestern shore when they saw a cave. It was inaccessible so they resolved to return the next day with ropes, torches and pickaxes.
The following day, the men began exploring the cave and made a startling discovery inside its innermost sector. They discovered three human skeletons, each one measuring more than ten feet tall. Around their necks, each skeleton had a silver amulet in the shape of what the men described as “bats.” An interesting aspect, since there have been several reports describing UFOs of this particular shape, not just in Russia but also the rest of the world.
Even more intriguing is a local Kyrgyz legend that references a sunken city on the bottom of lake Issik Kul. The last ruler of the ancient city had been King Ossounes, a giant with “long ears.” The legend also mentions that Ossounes was able to fly between the mountain peaks “in the blink of an eye.”
This discovery frightened the men enough to keep silent about it for years, but not enough to leave the silver amulets behind. They melted the jewelry and sold the silver but kept a small fragment as a memento. No photograph of this fragment survived to this day but Grabovsky would later write that the Soviet scientists who got the chance to examine it were unable to determine its exact age.
Galvanized by the fisherman’s admission, Grabovsky decided to dig deeper into the mystery. Rummaging through local archives, he stumbled upon the earliest mention of similarly-gigantic creatures, dating back to the mid 1800’s. A group of Georgian boys (at that time, Georgia was part of the Russian Empire) were diving for mussels in Lake Issik Kul when they happened upon the underwater entrance to a cave inside the nearby mountain. As you probably guessed it, the cave was home to the last earthly remains of several giants. Despite his best efforts, Grabovsky never found this cave. Or maybe he did but kept silent. Either way, the official version is that he died without sharing the results of his work with the rest of the world. But this isn’t the end of the story.
In the early 1980’s, Lake Issik Kul became the go-to place for Soviet testing of torpedoes, underwater missiles and military diving equipment. It was also one of the places where the Soviet military conducted periodic training of the recon divers known as “frogmen.” Another location was the already infamous Lake Baikal.
In 1982, during a frogmen training exercise in Lake Baikal, the divers encountered a group of strange underwater swimmers. The aquatic humanoids were enormous (more than ten feet tall) and, despite swimming in frigid waters, they wore nothing but tight-fitting silver suits. Although the beings were spotted at a depth of over 150 feet, none of them wore anything resembling scuba gear. They only had sphere-like helmets concealing their heads.
Naturally, this encounter determined the Soviet military leaders to attempt an expedition to catch one or all of the underwater humanoids and a group of seven frogmen was assembled and dispatched to the area. Former Afghan War veteran and author Mark Shteynberg, who has extensively researched this case, recalls:
“As the frogmen tried to cover the creature with a net, the entire team was propelled out of the deep waters to the surface by a powerful force. Because autonomous equipment of the frogmen does not allow surfacing from such depths without strict adherence to the process of decompression stops, all of the members of the ill-fated expedition were stricken by aeroembolism, or the Caisson disease. The only remedial treatment available consisted of an immediate confinement under decompression conditions in a pressure chamber. They had several such pressure chambers in the military region, but only one in working condition. It could contain no more than two persons.
Those local commanders had forced four frogmen into the chamber. As a result, three of them (including the CO of the group) perished, and the rest became invalids.”
As a direct result of this incident, Major-General V. Demyanko, the Commander of the USSR Military Diver Service was flown in to the military base at Issik Kul to inform the local officers about the dangers of attempting to capture the giant underwater humanoids. This serves as evidence that the Soviet high command was well aware of the presence of such creatures in both Lake Baikal and Issik Kul. Would they have issued an order against their capture if the creatures weren’t a real presence?
Not long after that, the Engineer Forces of the Ministry of Defense issued a bulletin addressed to the staff headquarters of the Turkmenistan military region. The bulletin noted many other lakes where similar aquatic humanoid sightings had been reported, alongside the usual flying disks and spheres ascending from and diving into the deep. This leads us into believing the incidents at Lake Baikal and Issik Kul were not singular events, but rather expressions of a much wider phenomenon.
The veracity of this incident is supported by the admission of Russian writer Mikhail Demidenko. After becoming familiar with Shteynberg’s account in 1992, Demidenko remembered spending some time at Lake Baikal in the mid 1980’s, on an assignment from the USSR Union of Writers. It was there that Irkutsk fishermen told him how they saw Soviet divers being thrown out of the water and continuing their ascent to a height of 30-50 feet above the water surface. The fishermen didn’t know about the underwater humanoid episode and had been wondering why the Soviet military subjected their divers to such tests.
So, is this case definitive evidence that Russian lakes are home to a race of giant aquatic humanoids? Not nearly enough, because more palpable proof is needed. But the continuous existence of legends and the admissions of retired high-ranking military officials, such as Col. Vladimir Azhazha seem to suggest there is something lurking in the unexplored depths of our planet.

First-Ever Clear Image of an Exoplanet Located 14 Quadrillion Km Away Released by ESO
Using the combined power of an array of telescopes from different locations across the globe, ESO astronomers managed to capture the first clear image of an exoplanet located in a star system 11 quadrillion kilometers away from Earth.
Astronomers’ pursuit in finding exoplanets (new planets orbiting other stars) is realized with various methods. One method is direct imaging, which has proved to be successful so far, being effective especially for planets on wide orbits around young stars, because the light reflected from the planet is not eclipsed by light reflected from the host star, making it easier to spot the needle in the haystack.
The captured image confirms the efficiency of this technique, showing a T-Tauri star named CVSO 30, situated about 1200 light-years away from Earth, northwest of Orions Belt, in the 25 Orionis cluster.
CSVO 30 is believed to host one exoplanet called CVSO 30b, as of its discovery in 2012, by the means of transit photometry, a detection method which seeks the light from a star visibly dipping plummeting as a planet heads in front of it.
For the moment, astronomers observe the system with a number of telescopes, combining every piece of information acquired with ESO’s VLT (Very Large Telescope) in Chile, with the data collected from the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, and finally with data gathered from the Calar Alto Observatory facilities in Spain.
Using the centralized data from the three observational facilities, the astronomers now have a better and more defined point of view on what seems to be a second planet. To generate the image, astronomers made use of the astrometry provided by VLT’s NACO and SINFONI instruments.
CVSO 30C. EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY
This new exoplanet entitled as CVSO 30c, is the small dot to the upper left of the frame, the massive blot being the star itself. While CVSO 30b orbits noticeably close to the star, revolving around CVSO 30 in less than 11 hours with an orbital distance of 0.008 au, CVSO 30c orbits considerably further away, at a distance of 660 au, requiring a mind-boggling 27,000 years to execute a single orbit. (For reference, the planet Mercury orbits the Sun at an average distance of 0.39 au, while Neptune sits at just over 30 au.)
“If it is confirmed that CVSO 30c orbits CVSO 30, this would be the first star system to host both a close-in exoplanet detected by the transit method and a far-out exoplanet detected by direct imaging,” ESO representatives wrote in a description of the new image.
“Astronomers are still exploring how such an exotic system came to form in such a short timeframe, as the star is only 2.5 million years old; it is possible that the two planets interacted at some point in the past, scattering off one another and settling in their current extreme orbits,” they added.
In a premiere event, ESO has imaged without prevarication a planet around its host star. Humans are now capable to directly render imagery of exoplanets, an achievement long targeted since the discovery of stellar wobbling that paved the way to the technique first used to detect planets around other stars.
With this discovery, it has become a certainty that new techniques and optics will be developed in order for us to continue the completion of the vast puzzle that is our visible and reachable universe.
Sooner that we expect, it will be possible to image satellites orbiting other planets. With an optical edge, it could also lead to the discovery of alien artifacts that now are undetectable by us. Only time will tell just how deep our knowledge and insight can become.
