'Stranger Things': How Realistic Are Parallel Worlds?

The hit new series "Stranger Things" is more than just the 1980s throwback we've all been waiting for. The show centers on a group of kids who are trying to solve a string of mysterious disappearances in their small town, but they soon realize that not all is as it seems. In fact, the kids soon realize that the spooky occurrences may actually be stemming from interactions with an alternate world.
While a sinister parallel universe like the one on the show "Stranger Things" may not be hovering over our own, the basic idea of an alternate world echoes concepts of multiverses that theoretical physicists have proposed for decades, experts say. [Top 5 Reasons We May Live in a Multiverse]
The idea of two parallel worlds that are slightly different, and can even interact, has been a mainstay of physics theories that have sought to explain quantum mechanics, gravity and other unexplained aspects of the natural world, researchers say.
That's not to say that there are definitely alternate worlds teeming with monsters, but the basic premise "is not necessarily in conflict with the laws of physics," said Brian Greene, a theoretical physicist and author at Columbia University in New York City.
However, most people should be skeptical of multiverse theories because there is no evidence supporting their existence, Greene added.
Stranger than fiction
On "Stranger Things," the inhabitants of Hawkins, Indiana, live in uncomfortable proximity to a universe called the Upside Down, which is filled with death, decay and mysterious slimy green moss. A monster infiltrates the bucolic small town from a similar, barren version of the world, and Hawkins residents can travel to the alternate universe through a tree stump or communicate between the two worlds by flicking lights on and off in a house. Also, there are psychic powers, Soviet spies and lots of '80s nostalgia.
Though the show is pure, shiver-inducing fiction, its conception of parallel worlds does seem to have taken at least one page from a legitimate physics theory: Hugh Everett's "many-worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics. In fact, in one episode, the teacher, Mr. Clarke, even references Everett's mind-bending theory.
Everett, who was a physicist in the 1950s and 1960s, proposed that whenever someone "measures" something in the universe – for instance, if you look at your shoes and notice whether or not a speck of dirt is on them – two separate realities branch out from there. "The universe winds up branching into many copies of itself," said Bill Poirier, a physicist and quantum chemist at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
However, unlike our world and the Upside Down on "Stranger Things," these branched-out pathways can never interact, Poirier said.
"No amount of light-flicking is going to overcome that," Poirier told Live Science.
Many interacting worlds
In recent years, Poirier has proposed a variant of this theory, called themany interacting worlds theory, which he described in a paper that was published in 2014 in the journal Physical Review X. The big difference is that these worlds "talk" to each other, in a sense.
Unlike Everett's conception, there are no branching universes. So, a person could conceivably have an evil "twin" in an alternate universe but an individual would not split into two. And while the worlds would interact, the stark differences between the bleak and sinister Upside Down and the humdrum reality of Hawkins, Indiana, would mean, in Poirier's theory, that people in one world could never travel to the other.
To understand why, picture this: a series of alternate worlds are stacked like pancakes, with more similar universes closer together in the pancake stack, while those with dramatic differences are farther apart. Any difference big enough to be seen with the naked eye would mean the universes would be so vastly distant from one another that they could never travel between the two, Poirier said.
"A few objects moved a tiny bit, on the nanoscale, from each other: Those are the worlds that can actually talk to each other and interact," Poirier said.
Braneworlds, Swiss cheese and cosmic loaves
The field of theoretical physics has produced almost as many parallel-world theories as there are branching universes in Everett's many-worlds theory itself.
All, however, suffer from one fatal flaw: At this point in time, no one has found any evidence they exist, Greene said.
"I'm hugely skeptical of all multiverse proposals, as should be everyone else on planet Earth," Greene told Live Science. "Having said that, I think the idea is tremendously exciting."
For instance, some theories emerge naturally from known physics, Greene said. For instance, the generalized mathematics behind the Big Bang, a period of massive inflation 13.8 billion years ago that created the universe, could be used to produce not just one, but many Big Bangs. "Many Big Bangs means many distinct universes," Greene said.
Like a block of Swiss cheese, in which each hole represents a separate universe, "they're all embedded within a grander, cosmic expanse," Greene said.
On occasion, these universes could collide, producing a cosmic imprint in the microwave background radiation we detect in our own universe, Greene said.
Another theory, which emerges from some interpretations of string theory, is that of so-called braneworld models in which "our universe is likened to a slice of bread in a giant cosmic loaf," Greene said.
Other slices of bread would be akin to other universes right next to ours in another dimension.
If in fact we live in such a multiverse, traces of these hidden worlds could show up at the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest particle accelerator, located near Geneva in Switzerland. At this underground facility, proton collisions could produce debris that is ejected from our universe and into another, Greene said.

An international team of scientists from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is investigating mysterious signal spikes emitting from a 6.3-billion-year-old star in the constellation Hercules—95 light years away from Earth. The implications are extraordinary and point to the possibility of a civilization far more advanced than our own.
The unusual signal was originally detected on May 15, 2015, by the Russian Academy of Science-operated RATAN-600 radio telescope in Zelenchukskaya, Russia, but was kept secret from the international community. Interstellar space reporter Paul Gilster broke the story after the researchers quietly circulated a paper announcing the detection of “a strong signal in the direction of HD164595.”
The mysterious star’s designation is HD164595, and it’s considered to be sun-like in nature with a nearly identical metallic composition to our own star. So far, a single Neptune-like (but warmer) planet has been discovered in its orbit—HD 164595 b. But as Gilster explained, “There could, of course, be other planets still undetected in this system.”
Decorated Italian SETI researcher and mathematician Claudio Maccone along with Russia’s Nikolai Bursov of the Special Astrophysical Observatory are the principal scientists working on the apparent discovery. They claim that “permanent monitoring of this target is needed.”

“The signal conceivably fits the profile for an intentional transmission from an extraterrestrial source,” said Alan Boyle, author of The Case for Pluto who reported the story for Geekwire.“In any case, the blip is interesting enough to merit discussion by those who specialize in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.”
The signal’s strength indicates that if it in fact came from a isotropic beacon, the power source would have to be built by a Kardashev Type II civilization. (The Kardashev scale is used to determine the progress of a civilization’s technological development by measuring how much energy was used to transmit an interstellar message.) An ‘Isotropic’ beacon means a communication source emitting a signal with equal power in all directions while promoting signal strength throughout travel.
In his acclaimed work “Transmission of Information by Extraterrestrial Civilizations,” Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev explained that a Type II civilization would be able to harness the energy of their entire host star. The most common hypothetical example of this would be a Dyson Sphere—which is a massive artificial structure that could completely encapsulate a star and transfer the energy to a nearby planet.

Basically, if the signal was beamed out into the galaxy without aim or direction, that would require an enormous amount of power to actually be detected. But what if the signal was beamed specifically at our solar system? Well, that would require less energy and could indicate the presence of a Kardashev Type I civilization—meaning that it could be a highly technological, contemporary society that harnesses the solar energy emitted by its local star, much like our planet does with solar panels. This particular civilization’s social structure is theorized to be completely globalized and interconnected.
“The signal is provocative enough that the RATAN-600 researchers are calling for permanent monitoring of this target,” said Gilster. And that’s exactly what is transpiring. As of last night, the SETI institute is diverting its Allen Telescope Array in northern California to investigate while their counterparts at METI International (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) will use Panama’s Boquete Optical Observatory.
The detection of the mysterious signal and the ensuing investigations will be discussed at the IAA SETI Permanent Committee during the 67th International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, on September 27—the same day and location where Elon Musk will reveal his plans to colonize Mars. The Observer will be following up on both these stories from the Congress.

It is a common occurrence for ‘UFO’s to be tracked on military radar, and more and more people are starting to believe that these objects are of extraterrestrial origin. One reason for this is the disclosure of evidence supporting such a hypothesis in recent years. If you really want to go in depth and read some proper studies on this topic, you can check out Richard Dolan’s books. They are a great place to start, he is a brilliant academic and one of the world’s leading researchers on the topic of UFOs.
Sagan’s Close Colleague
Apart from the congressional hearings on this subject, and the fairly recent citizens hearing that took place, along with the release of official documentation, there has been a surge in people believing that ETs are real because of the work of scholars like Dr. Brian O’Leary.
Brian was a close colleague of Carl Sagan, who recruited him to teach at Cornell University in the late 1960’s, where he researched and lectured in the department of astronomy and physics. After Cornell, he taught physics, astronomy, and science policy assessment at various academic institutions, including the University of California Berkeley, Hampshire College, and finally at Princeton University from 1976 to 1981. After this he went on to Washington, where he would become an advisor to various political leaders, presidential candidates, and the United States Congress.
Before all of this, Dr. O’Leary was a NASA astronaut and a member of the sixth group of astronauts selected by NASA in August of 1967. One year after that, as mentioned above, Sagan recruited him to teach at Cornell. O’Leary was also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as secretary of the American Geophysical Union’s Planetology Section. Furthermore, he was the team leader of the Asteroidal Resources Group for NASA’s Ames Summer Study on Space Settlements. He was a founding board member of the International Association for New Science as well as founding president of the New Energy Movement.

As you can see, his resume is more than extensive, and O’Leary is just one out of hundreds of people with this type of distinguished background to blow the lid on the extraterrestrial phenomenon. Brian passed away shortly after this video was taken. Apparently it happened shortly after having a heart attack and a diagnosis of intestinal cancer.
What He Said Carl Sagan Did
He had some interesting things to say during a live interview with Kerry Cassidy of Project Camelot (view full live interview here, read transcript of video here). O’Leary and Sagan were close for a number of years, but had a little bit of a falling out when O’Leary decided to leave Cornell. In the interview, he remarked:
It was… One very cold snowy day in May, I landed in Syracuse, and there was a horizontal blizzard — in May — and I said: That’s it for upstate New York. And Carl thought that was very frivolous. Because, of course, he was kind of an empire-builder kind of guy; and he also had a huge ego.
After he left, O’Leary started to examine some of Carl’s work. He said that the famous “Face” in Cydonia on Mars — photographed by Viking in 1975, this enormous formation (about a mile across) resembled a human face and created a major buzz at the time — was tampered with by Sagan before being released to the public:
It was very, very disappointing to me, because not only was Carl wrong, he also fudged data. He published a picture of the “Face” in Parade Magazine, a popular article, saying that the “Face” was just a natural formation, but he doctored the picture to make it not look like a face.
At this time, Sagan and O’Leary were arguably the world’s two leading experts on Mars, and they entered into many disagreements over that face. This rift was made clear in O’Leary’s publication in 1998, “Carl Sagan & I: On Opposite Sides of Mars.” It can be found in The Case for the Face: Scientists Examine the Evidence for Alien Artifacts on Mars, eds. Stanley V. McDaniel and Monica Rix Paxson. Kempton, IL: Adventures Unlimited Press.
I began to realize, just directly from the scientific point of view, not only hearsay, that this man was colluding with NASA, that there might be more to this than before. . . . Carl was on a committee with a number of notable people. There was a report issued by the Brookings Institution in 1961 — and that’s about when I knew Carl, during those years; the ’60s mostly was when I worked closely with him — that he and this other group said: Well, if any ETs ever showed up on the Earth, it has to be covered up. That’s the only way we’re going to be able to manage this, because if we can’t, then it would be too much of a culture shock.
Quite a shocking statement from someone of Brian’s stature, isn’t it? In the interview, he goes on to say that Carl and his colleagues recommended that the governments cover up the UFO phenomenon, and that he believes this provided justification for the ongoing cover-up
It’s important to note that this does not make Sagan a ‘bad guy.’ He was clearly the opposite of that, and his love for science and educating humanity was quite clear. If he was in favour of covering this up, if he did know about it, there is a very good chance it was done for what they perceived to be, good reasons. Sure, there might be some corporate reasons, and some other not so pleasant reasons the cover-up remains today, but it’s plausible to assume that in the beginning, perhaps there was no I’ll intent.

Scientists Believe Humans Will One Day Colonize the Universe

A new study from the University of Oxford looks at the possibility of human colonization throughout the universe.
Scientists as eminent as Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan have long believed that humans will one day colonize the universe. But how easy would it be, why would we want to, and why haven’t we seen any evidence of other life forms making their own bids for universal domination?
A new paper by Dr Stuart Armstrong and Dr Anders Sandberg from Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute (FHI) attempts to answer these questions. To be published in the August/September edition of the journal Acta Astronautica, the paper takes as its starting point the Fermi paradox – the discrepancy between the likelihood of intelligent alien life existing and the absence of observational evidence for such an existence.
Dr Armstrong says: “There are two ways of looking at our paper. The first is as a study of our future – humanity could at some point colonize the universe. The second relates to potential alien species – by showing the relative ease of crossing between galaxies, it makes the lack of evidence for other intelligent life even more puzzling. This worsens the Fermi paradox.”
The paradox, named after the physicist Enrico Fermi, is something of particular interest to the academics at the FHI – a multidisciplinary research unit that enables leading intellects to bring the tools of mathematics, philosophy and science to bear on big-picture questions about humanity and its prospects.
Dr Sandberg explains: “Why would the FHI care about the Fermi paradox? Well, the silence in the sky is telling us something about the kind of intelligence in the universe. Space isn’t full of little green men, and that could tell us a number of things about other intelligent life – it could be very rare, it could be hiding, or it could die out relatively easily. Of course it could also mean it doesn’t exist. If humanity is alone in the universe then we have an enormous moral responsibility. As the only intelligence, or perhaps the only conscious minds, we could decide the fate of the entire universe.”
According to Dr Armstrong, one possible explanation for the Fermi paradox is that life destroys itself before it can spread. “That would mean we are at a higher risk than we might have thought,” he says. “That’s a concern for the future of humanity.”
Dr Sandberg adds: “Almost any answer to the Fermi paradox gives rise to something uncomfortable. There is also the theory that a lot of planets are at roughly at the same stage – what we call synchronized – in terms of their ability to explore the universe, but personally I don’t think that’s likely.”
As Dr Armstrong points out, there are Earth-like planets much older than the Earth – in fact most of them are, in many cases by billions of years.
Dr Sandberg says: “In the early 1990s we thought that perhaps there weren’t many planets out there, but now we know that the universe is teeming with planets. We have more planets than we would ever have expected.”
A lack of planets where life could evolve is, therefore, unlikely to be a factor in preventing alien civilizations. Similarly, recent research has shown that life may be hardier than previously thought, weakening further the idea that the emergence of life or intelligence is the limiting factor. But at the same time – and worryingly for those studying the future of humanity – this increases the probability that intelligent life doesn’t last long.
The Acta Astronautica paper looks at just how far and wide a civilization like humanity could theoretically spread across the universe. Past studies of the Fermi paradox have mainly looked at spreading inside the Milky Way. However, this paper looks at more ambitious expansion.
Dr Sandberg says: “If we wanted to go to a really remote galaxy to colonize one of these planets, under normal circumstances we would have to send rockets able to decelerate on arrival. But with the universe constantly expanding, the galaxies are moving further and further away, which makes the calculations rather tricky. What we did in the paper was combine a number of mathematical and physical tools to address this issue.”
Dr Armstrong and Dr Sandberg show in the paper that, given certain technological assumptions (such as advanced automation or basic artificial intelligence, capable of self-replication), it would be feasible to construct a Dyson sphere, which would capture the energy of the sun and power a wave of intergalactic colonization. The process could be initiated on a surprisingly short timescale.
But why would a civilization want to expand its horizons to other galaxies? Dr Armstrong says: “One reason for expansion could be that a sub-group wants to do it because it is being oppressed or it is ideologically committed to expansion. In that case you have the problem of the central civilization, which may want to prevent this type of expansion. The best way of doing that get there first. Pre-emption is perhaps the best reason for expansion.”
Dr Sandberg adds: “Say a race of slimy space aliens wants to turn the universe into parking lots or advertising space – other species might want to stop that. There could be lots of good reasons for any species to want to expand, even if they don’t actually care about colonizing or owning the universe.”
He concludes: “Our key point is that if any civilization anywhere in the past had wanted to expand, they would have been able to reach an enormous portion of the universe. That makes the Fermi question tougher – by a factor of billions. If intelligent life is rare, it needs to be much rarer than just one civilization per galaxy. If advanced civilizations all refrain from colonizing, this trend must be so strong that not a single one across billions of galaxies and billions of years chose to do it. And so on.”
“We still don’t know what the answer is, but we know it’s more radical than previously expected.”

Have you ever wondered who the fuck came up with the idea that aliens in movies should look a bit like humans – only with a big head, crazy eyes and slimy body? I have, and it really bothers me; if you are going to entertain the idea of extraterrestrial life, why would you be so lazy when it comes to imagining what it looks like? It just does my head in.
I tried to google my question but my search did not produce a satisfactory answer. So, I decided to contact a few people who claim to have actually had a close encounter of the third kind, and ask them to draw that experience. My hope was that at least one of them would come up with an alien that did not resemble a frog. None of them did. Whether that makes their stories more believable or the concept of humanoid aliens less stupid, I will leave to you to decide.
Here are some of those drawings, coupled with brief interviews I conducted with the "alien abductees".

LOUISE, 56
VICE: Can you tell me about the time you were abducted? Louise: It was in 1997 – I was 37 at the time. I woke up in the middle of the night, paralysed. To my right, there were two small aliens. I can't really explain why, but I wasn't scared. I was raised horizontally above the bed and levitated towards the closed window. The next moment, I found myself on a very cold table surrounded by the two small aliens and a third, much bigger creature who was standing by my feet. His body was a blur to me, but I suddenly realised I had seen him 20 years earlier, in what I had then thought was a nightmare. With regression therapy I came to realise they had visited me before but I just always thought they were ghosts in a recurring dream.
What did they do? They inseminated me artificially, and when I found myself back in bed, I knew I was pregnant. I couldn't be, because I had a coil and I was going through a divorce. But in an emergency appointment with the gynaecologist, he confirmed I was. The night before I was supposed to have an abortion, I prayed to God and Mary to help me. The next day, I was happy again. I called off the abortion.
What do you think happened to make you pregnant?
I think they took semen from my ex-husband and then modified the DNA. I have three sons – two of them came from something like this. They're both very precocious. I never suffered during the abductions. If these creatures wanted to do us any harm, they would have attacked us by now.

VICE: Hi Stéphane. What can you tell me about your alien encounter? Stéphane: It was on March the 24th, 2010, after my night shift at the hospital where I work. At about 4AM I drove up to the security gate to go home, when a flash of light blinded me. In a split second, I found myself in another place – I was on a mountain, and there was a lake at its foot. Suddenly a huge space ship appeared in the sky, while an even brighter light began to emanate from the ground. That's all I remember. The next thing I know, I am back behind the wheel of my car, passing the security gate. When I got out, I was approached by police who said they had been looking for me. It turned out I had been gone for three days. I have no idea what happened.
Did you see aliens? I don't think I did, but on that mountain I did see people who looked human though I couldn't really see or I can't remember their faces. Generally, I think these beings can divert our minds and make us think of something else.
Did you bear any physical marks? For about a month, I had three dots on my right hand, spaced two centimetres apart in the form of a triangle. It hurt a lot for the first week – like a burn that wouldn't heal. Ever since that experience, I always have the feeling that I'm being watched.

VICE: What do you remember happening to you? Émilie: I was 17 and my boyfriend spent the night at my house. My mother allowed us to sleep in the living room that night – which my father would never have, but he was away working a night shift. The three of us spent the evening chatting in the living room. At some point, I began to hear a repeated thump, which my mother and boyfriend couldn't hear.
We all went to bed around midnight. The noises first got more intense, and then muffled. My boyfriend heard nothing and fell asleep instantly. I was terrified, it felt like time had stopped around us. I closed my eyes and when I opened them again, I saw several small, hooded creatures circling the bed. I couldn't see their faces.
What about your boyfriend? I tried to wake him up by shaking him, but he wouldn't wake up. So I ran out of the living room and fled to my own room. A few minutes later, I heard the key in the front door unlock – it was suddenly 7AM and my father was returning from his night shift. I had lost nearly six hours – I have no idea what happened between shaking my boyfriend and running to my room. That was the most traumatic thing about it.
What did you do the next day? Did you tell anyone? I was so angry at my boyfriend for not having woken up that I broke up with him and have not seen him since. But no one woke up from the noise – my grandmother, sister, mother and boyfriend were all in the house. It took me a long time before I told someone. I've felt like a guinea pig ever since that experience – like I've been usedand violated.

VICE: Could you describe your experience for me? Myriame: It happened in 1987, while I was holidaying in a chalet in Chamonix, in the French Alps. Right before I fell asleep, I heard a clicking sound. When I woke up, I saw that the skylight in the roof above me had opened up and a cord had come down from the sky through it – it was connected to my genitals. Two small beings floated around the cord. The only part I could move was my eyes, and didn't understand anything about what was going on.
I wasn't used to that feeling – I'm a computer scientist and very passionate about astronomy. I'm a member of the Astronautical Commission of the Aéro-Club of France – the French aviation society. I'm used to understanding space phenomena – or at least parts of it. I didn't understand anything about this.
Do you have an idea of what they did to you? Yes, after some regression therapy with a hypnotherapist. I saw that I was lying on a table in a huge transparent dome, while they had me completely covered in a gelatinous substance. The little beings were there as well as larger ones, and the cord was still in me – it went up my right kidney, which hurt. I levitated above the table for a while, which was an incredible sensation.
You also mentioned that you remember a second experience. Yes, that was another time in the same chalet, when through the skylight, I could make out a black spaceship in the sky. Then I found myself back in a dome with the little aliens, but also with one larger being that looked a bit like a praying mantis. It was standing at the end of the table and it tried to console me a little, which worked. I couldn't move and I don't know what they did, until I passed through a tunnel of light and was back in my bed. So, yeah. There you go.

De Amerikaanse marine voert al tientallen jaren oorlog met reptielachtige aliens. Dat stelt William Tompkins, die zelf jarenlang voor de marine werkzaam was, in een nieuw boek.
De 92-jarige schrijver claimt te hebben gewerkt voor een denktank die in de jaren vijftig en zestig kilometers lange ruimteschepen moest ontwerpen voor de marine, zo schrijft de Britse Daily Star.
William Tompkins
Tompkins heeft in die periode naar eigen zeggen vijf ruimteschepen en 30 ondersteuningsschepen ontworpen. In zijn boek Selected by Extraterrestrials beweert hij dat deze interplanetaire schepen zijn gemaakt om de aarde te beschermen tegen kwaadwillende aliens die de mensheid tot slaaf willen maken.
Deze ruimteoorlogen zijn vaak van hele korte duur en vinden al tientallen jaren vlak onder onze neus plaats, aldus Tompkins. In het boek waarschuwt hij echter dat de reptielachtige aliens ‘sterker worden’.
Piramides
De Amerikaanse marine zou nauw samenwerken met de zogeheten Nordics, aliens die beschikken over soortgelijke ruimteschepen. De Nordics zijn naar verluidt afkomstig uit het sterrenbeeld Orion en oefenden invloed uit op de bouw van de piramides.

Tompkins zegt dat hij werd benaderd door de marine toen hij op de middelbare school zat. Hij bezocht tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog geregeld geheime installaties. Hij was gestationeerd op Naval Air Station San Diego, waar hij instructies gaf aan Amerikaanse spionnen.
De spionnen hadden volgens Tompkins ontdekt dat Hitler contact had met aliens. “De Reptilians sloten een deal met de SS. In ruil voor een grote doos vol speeltjes mocht Hitler de rest van de planeet tot slaaf maken,” zei hij.

In 1951 werd hij ingehuurd door Douglas Aircraft Company, waar hij naar eigen zeggen 12 jaar lang samen met de Nordics werkte aan door antizwaartekracht aangedreven schepen.
Tompkins staaft zijn claims met verschillende geopenbaarde overheidsdocumenten, waaronder ontwerpplannen voor ruimteschepen. Hij laat onder andere ontwerpen zien voor een 1,4 kilometer lange Naval Spacecraft Battle Cruiser en een 2,5 kilometer lange Naval Spacescraft Carrier.
Hij legt uit dat de schepen pas in de jaren tachtig werden gebouwd, toen het geheime ruimteprogramma Solar Warden werd gelanceerd. Volgens sommigen is het boek krachtig bewijs dat de Amerikaanse marine samenwerkt met buitenaardse wezens.

“The two objects hovered before a third one that showed up next to them. The third started to move away slow before just flat out disappearing. Excited. They just vanished.”

A Florida witness at Ocala reported watching a large light in the sky that hovered and moved over a 40-minute period with similar sightings over an additional four-day period, according to testimony in Case 78614 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness stepped outside and noticed a bright white light above the tree line at 11 p.m. on August 17, 2016.
“As I frequently watch the stars, I knew it wasn’t supposed to be there, and I got very excited,” the witness stated. “This thing was big, about 4mm tall, and trapezoidal with the top about 2mm and the bottom about 3 mm.”
The witness watched the object for about 15 seconds as red, green and blue lights blinked randomly.
“I went inside and got my wife and 20-year-old son. As the three of us observed the object, it started to dart left and back to the right about half a dozen times. After hovering motionless for a couple minutes, it shot down and back up again three times. It then started to move in fast, tight circles for about five seconds before returning to its original position. Or at least as near as I could tell.”

After several minutes of inactivity, the witnesses’ wife turned to her computer for help while he and his son continued to watch.
“Over the next half-hour, my son and I watched it through binoculars and tried to get it on film, but our cameras were inadequate for the low light levels. Also over that same time span, it slowly drifted to the north and farther away. This I discern from its shrinking size. About 40 minutes after first observing it, it grew too small to see.”
The object returned the following four nights.
“Over the next four nights, the 18th through the 21st, we have observed as many as nine of these lighted, blinking objects. On the 19th we had an additional observer, a friend from town. Based on this, I have every reason to believe they will be back tonight. Additional report(s), to follow. Hopefully we’ll get some pictures/video.”
Ocala is about 80 miles northwest of Orlando.

Een lezer die al jarenlang onderzoek doet naar leven op Mars zegt dat wij eigenlijk met een verkeerde bril op kijken naar leven op de Rode planeet.
Dat wij denken dat leven daar net zo is als wij op aarde gewend zijn, maar, zo zegt hij, “Niets is minder waar”.
De man die zegt dat hij meer weet en beter is dan ufoloog Scott Waring, presenteert het hierna volgende verhaal (dank!):
Als opwarmertje van de foto's die ik vrij ga geven over leven op Mars, ga ik in op het begrip hoe dit te ontdekken is en geef alvast een primeur vrij.
Zodra er foto's op NASA Multimedia Raw worden vrijgegeven, ben ik er als de kippen bij en sla alles op uit de rubriek "Mast Camera (Mastcam)" zodat NASA niet de kans krijgt om zaken weer te veranderen door gemaakte fouten. Dit alles vraagt veel tijd en werk om dit te onderzoeken.
Al jaren doe ik onderzoek naar leven op Mars en door Basiago's documenten te bestuderen, heb ik geleerd zaken anders te bekijken dan een in pijplijn denkende mens die er meestal vanuit gaan dat het leven aldaar eender zou zijn met de Aarde.
Nou, niets is minder waar. Levensvormen in allerlei geuren en kleuren die soms enige gelijkenis toen met Aardse diersoorten. Het leven aldaar heeft zich heel anders ontwikkeld. Om daar een voorstelling van te krijgen kun je hier een PDF document vinden.
Ik kan mij nog heel goed herinneren dat Andrew D. Basiago een verhaal vertelde over mensen op Mars en een flinke oorlog tussen mensen en grote insecten.
Hierbij zouden bijna 100.000 doden zijn gevallen. Zelf kan ik dit niet meer terug vinden maar wel dit, een verklaring bij exopolitics:

Mr. Basiago and Mr. Stillings agree that Major Dames stated during their training class at The College of the Siskiyous in 1980: “Of the 97,000 individuals that we have thus far sent to Mars, only 7,000 have survived there after five years.”
In light of these risks, prior to going to Mars, Mr. Basiago received additional training from Mr. Hunt. Hunt, a career CIA officer, showed Mr. Basiago how to operate the respiration device that he would wear only during his first jump to Mars in July 1981, provided him with a weapon to protect himself on Mars, and took him to the Lockheed facility in Burbank, California for training in avoiding predators on the Martian surface.

De meeste onder ons kunnen zich nog steeds niet voorstellen dat wij niet de enigste zijn met een bewoonde planeet en als je iets vrij geeft wordt je al gauw bespot of men wil het niet zien. En dat is soms best te begrijpen omdat de foto's van Mars ontzettend worden bewerkt door de NASA.
Velen onder ons wisten bijvoorbeeld al door onderzoek dat er water is op Mars en het heeft dan ook een tijd geduurd voor NASA het uiteindelijk moest toegeven. Zo is dat nu het geval met leven op Mars wat NASA stellig blijft ontkennen. Ook bestaat er nog steeds een hardnekkig gerucht, dat de opnamen worden gemaakt op Devons Island. Dat is niet zo en mijn foto's zullen dat in deel 2 ook aantonen volgende maand.

At least two SETI research groups are aiming to track HD 164595 tonight. The SETI Institute is using the Allen Telescope Array in northern California, while METI International is looking to the Boquete Optical SETI Observatory in Panama. Gilster reports that the signal spike was detected more than a year ago, on May 15, 2015, by the RATAN-600 radio telescope in Zelenchukskaya. That facility is in the Russian republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, not far from the Georgian border.

Three objects, very orange with no blinking, rotating around each other At 9:15 3 bright orange objects were seen to the northeast of our home. they were moving slowly to the west and rotating around each other slowly. our neighbors came out and we all witnessed it and had all agreed that we have never seen anything in the sky like that before. the objects blinked out and then reappeared 10 minutes later at the same location in the sky as when we first saw them and moving in the same direction.the second sighting also lasted for approximately 6 minutes before the three orange light abruptly disappeared.

Here are some interesting daytime photos of a strange unidentified flying object in the sky above Westfield, New York. This happened on 28th August 2016.

I was returning from diving shipwrecks in Lake Erie on the Southwind. A boat owned be Osprey charters out of Westfield New York. As we were coming back to port about 1 PM I began to take photos of the sky and horizon. The clouds were in some very interesting patterns and I was shooting all around us. Most of those photos were taken looking westerly as we were heading more or less southerly towards port. After coming home and downloading the photos onto my desktop I spotted an object in one that I first took to be some kind of lens flare. I zoomed in on it and saw a yellow rounded shape with some kind of trail ending in an orange /red tapered tail. Then I started to go through the photos and realized that it had started as a round yellow ball and as it got closer to the contrail in the photo it elongated. It actually intersected the contrail by traveling behind it. I have the photos I attached. My regret is that I did not see it at the time it was happening. I was shooting with a Canon SL1 camera on auto with a Tokina 10-17 wide angle lens. I was also on a moving boat and not looking for objects in the sky other than interesting cloud formations. My reaction, once I began to look at the photos in sequence, was first one of puzzlement. Then wonder. Followed by hope that I had actually captured something unknown. I am open to the idea of some type of satellite re-entry or other known object. I have also published the photos on the social media site Facebook.

Alien existence has become the world’s most controversial topic simply because strange orbs, humanoid creatures, and strange lights has continued to show up. Since witnesses have fought for their beliefs, we are left with questions as to whether or not our government has concealed the fact. The group of Russian astronomers has picked up a strong, mysterious radio signal from the space. The radio signal has become the most controversial object since most people connect it to the possibility of alien existence. The appearance of a signal is appealing because it appears like a sun-like star. The astronomers utilized the RATAN-600 radio telescope. This instrument is a massive radio observatory in Zelenchukskaya, Russia. According to the data, the signal came from HD164595, star’s direction located 95 light-years from the Earth. The fact is intriguing since both the star and sun have the same size, and it is acknowledged to have a planet in its orbit. Granting the resemblance and explanation, it is possible that other planets in this system exist.
The signal is not all that new because astronomers found it a year ago. However, it is making headlines for a few reasons. The fact that the astronomers waited to tell the SETI, it is acceptable that once the signal is found, people connect it to extraterrestrial activity right away. It is going to be hard to confirm what the radio telescope picked up last year was genuine. Discovering a repeated signal after the original detection is strange. Also, it is not clear what the signal was; it can still be connected to a message from another civilization or just an effect of a natural space object.
Before, SETI researchers have been burned by intense space signals like the so-called “Wow signal.” It was a strong radio signal picked up by astronomers in 1977 at Ohio State University. As interesting as that signal was, it has yet to be examined again. So until another signal is discovered from the HD164595 system, the appearance of a signal will not indicate alien existence.
Do extraterrestrials exist? This is a question that requires too many explanations. There is too much-documented evidence, witnesses for a rational person to think otherwise. When people hear the word UFO, they categorize them as the little gray aliens that abduct and exploit humans. However, there is nothing absolute because there are peacekeepers, which are those that you rarely hear about. They look more human rather than humanoid, hence, not visually exciting. They are harder to remember since the memories are not that easy to retrieve. A book written by a renowned expert has revealed encounters in Poland. It stated that Polish policemen do not usually report their alien encounters. However, when they do, their reports are unusual ones. On January 8, two police officers returned from a night intervention. They were tasked to calm down an aggressive drunkard in one village. When the job was accomplished, they began to head back to their station. Suddenly, they noticed bright lights in the distance that hovered over the forest. At first, they considered it as a part of the mobile tower, but the luminous object was approaching their car.
Afterward, it stationed over a grove of trees about a kilometer from the road. The object was orange-yellow in color, and it began morphing and altering its colors. One officer felt that something is in the air. When the object appeared on the horizon, they decided to stop and examine it. The officer recalled that it was moving soundlessly, but from the appearance of the object, it has to make a noise as it is apparently generated by the rotor or the engine of the flying machine. They added that it was possible to distinguish the craft hull’s shape. However, strange feelings, darkness, and appearance of the exotic object forced them to drive off the scene. After a while, the aliens began to move in parallel with their car. It was at 4.32 am when the officer recorded the video showing a dim light. Since they did not expect the encounter, they were not prepared to conduct a visual documentation of the incident.

This thing flew by me from the south.made a loop and went back to the south… If you can blow up the video I could see it as a triangle. Went outside to dump trash notice the blinking lights flying from the south at a very high altitude then when they came back went back inside… Came back outside to smoke a cigarette about 5 to 10 minutes later the craft had circled around and was heading back south flying at a much lower altitude… The video was shot on an iPhone so you should be able to blow it up with my eye I could see that it was a triangle . I shot this video while I was outside smoking a cigarette .

A man at Monroeville in Pennsylvania claimed to have watched and photographed an orange orb-like UFO that floated and traveled at 500 feet. According to Case 78094 from witness reporting database of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), the unnamed witness was with his co-worker sitting outside on a porch smoking cigarettes at 8:56 in the evening on July 31, 2016, when the unusual event took place.
The reporting witness stated that the UFO hummed through the air while changing colors. The mysterious aerial thing reportedly stopped fast in mid-air, flew right after a couple of seconds, and then shot west, hovered once again, and then shot off the rest of the way.
According to Pennsylvania MUFON State Director Sam Colosimo Jr., the witness, and his co-worker saw the light from the southeast and observed it as it moved toward a south direction. It stopped and hovered for around 20 seconds. The UFO flew towards the witnesses and stopped when it was around five houses away. It then moved away back to the southeast at a tremendous speed.
The reporting witness further claimed that they saw one flashing light in the object. As the object moved away, it produced a humming noise. The object was reportedly about the size of a house. Sam closed this case as Unknown.
The outburst occurred Feb. 19 on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which Rosetta has been orbiting since August 2014. The spacecraft observed the eruption of gas and dust with nine of its 11 science instruments, from a distance of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers), European Space Agency (ESA) officials said.
"Over the last year, Rosetta has shown that, although activity can be prolonged, when it comes to outbursts, the timing is highly unpredictable, so catching an event like this was pure luck," Matt Taylor, ESA's Rosetta project scientist, said in a statement. "By happy coincidence, we were pointing the majority of instruments at the comet at this time, and having these simultaneous measurements provides us with the most complete set of data on an outburst ever collected," Taylor added.
The outburst began around 4:40 a.m. EST (0940 GMT) on Feb. 19, when Rosetta's wide-angle camera picked up a significant brightening of the coma — the fuzzy cloud around Comet 67P's nucleus.

The increased activity continued for at least the next 2 hours. During that stretch, the brightness of the ultraviolet light reflected by 67P's nucleus increased by a factor of six, and the amount of dust emitted by the comet spiked as well. Rosetta's dust counter detected nearly 200 particles over the course of a few hours on Feb. 19; the instrument recorded just three to 10 hits on other days in that month, ESA officials said.
In addition, the temperature of the gas around Rosetta rose by 54 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) during the outburst.
Rosetta's observations indicate that the eruption started on a steep slope in a region of the 2.5-mile-wide (4 kilometers) comet that is known as Atum, mission team members said.
The activity began when this slope emerged from shadow into sunlight, suggesting that thermal stresses may have caused a landslide that exposed previously buried water ice to space. This ice then immediately sublimated (transitioned to the gas phase), taking lots of dust with it as it rocketed away, according to this hypothesis, which researchers detail in a new paper published online today (Aug. 25) in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

"We’ll continue to analyze the data, not only to dig into the details of this particular event, but also to see if it can help us better understand the many other outbursts witnessed over the course of the mission," said Taylor, who is a co-author of the new study. "It’s great to see the instrument teams working together on the important question of how cometary outbursts are triggered."
The Rosetta mission was the first ever to orbit a comet, and the first to drop a lander on one of these icy bodies. (The Rosetta mothership carried a lander called Philae, which touched down in November 2014; Rosetta team members recently declared Philae dead.)
But Rosetta's pioneering work at Comet 67P is coming to an end: The orbiter will end its mission with a controlled, slow-motion crash onto the comet's surface on Sept. 30.
The billions of stars in the night sky can give rise to the question, are we alone in the universe? The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) seeks to answer that question by hunting for signs of advanced civilizations in the cosmos.
The term SETI can be applied in two ways. The first characterizes the quest itself, the search for other advanced lifeforms undertaken by people around the world. The SETI Institute, the second application, leads the charge in the pursuit of broadcasts from life beyond Earth.
The SETI Institute
The largest player in the hunt for advanced life beyond the solar system, the SETI Institute is made up of scientists, engineers, technicians, teachers, and other support staff. In 1988, NASA began funding a strategy to sweep all directions of the sky in the hunt for life. Observations began in 1992, on the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World. However, within a year, Congress terminated funding.
The SETI Institute then sought private funding to continue the hunt for advanced life in the universe. Donations from the enthusiastic public have helped continue the hunt for signals from other worlds. According to its website, the Institute has over 100 active projects, spanning astronomy and planetary sciences, chemical evolution, the origin of life and climate change.
Project Phoenix continued the targeted search initially instituted by NASA. The program carefully examined regions around a thousand nearby sun-like stars with the world's largest antennae.
In a joint project with the University of California, Berkeley, the Institute built 42 individual telescopes that function as a single massive instrument. TheAllen Telescope Array, named for benefactor Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft), began observations in 2007. According to the SETI Institute, the array should allow scientists to examine as many as 1 million nearby stars in the next two decades
Extraterrestrial life can be roughly grouped into two categories. The first is the broad classification of life itself, a process that includes microbial and other simple forms. Without civilization and technology, life cannot produce the advanced signals that travel across the galaxy. However, many scientists continue to investigate atmospheres and other characteristics of worlds both in and out of the solar system as part of the search for life beyond our planet.
The search for extraterrestrial intelligence looks beyond this broad category in an effort to find advanced civilizations. Most SETI searches focus on the hunt for radio or optical signals that can signify highly evolved alien life.
Because life on Earth arose within 100 million years after the planet was habitable, many scientists think that life should evolve on planets with the right characteristics. With billions of stars in the galaxy, each thought to host at least one planet, there are numerous opportunities for life to evolve. The wealth of planets revealed by NASA's Kepler space telescope have produced a slew of potentially habitable worlds for SETI scientists to target.
According to SETI Institute astronomer Seth Shostak, there are three ways to find life on other worlds. The first is to go and look, a process only feasible within the solar system. The second is by studying light from the planet to investigate its atmosphere, currently under way with instruments like NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The third is to search for signals that could indicate intelligence.
"That's what SETI does," Shostak said in a broadcast.
Most SETI searches focus on radio signals, and most of these hunt for narrow-band signals, radio emissions that cover only a small portion of the radio spectrum. Natural objects blanket the spectrum with signals, so finding a signal that only dominated a small region would be suggestive of an artificial source.
Scientists also focus on optical searches for advanced civilizations. These hunts involve looking for very brief flashes of light that last only nanoseconds.
Messages from other worlds could be deliberately beamed or they could be accidental. Earth has been broadcasting signals since World War II, when radio communications became more common. SETI searches also look for intentional messages transmitted into space. More recently, the SETI hunt has begun to look for communications between two worlds along Earth's line of sight; messages beamed toward a planet or moon in the system couldcontinue on toward Earth.
Whether or not humans would be capable of understanding the message is another story. If a civilization is deliberately beaming a message into space, they may seek to distill it to its simplest form. However, if the message is accidentally broadcast or is a message for another world, it is possible that scientists will never be able to decode it.
According to the SETI Institute, the signal will reveal a few things about the civilization producing it. Scientists will be able to pinpoint its origination, and changes can help determine how the planet is rotating and moving.
"But even though this information is limited, the detection of an alien intelligence will be an enormously big story," the SETI Institute said on its website.
"We'll be aware that we're neither alone nor the smartest thing in the universe."
Having found the signal, the institute envisions that enthusiasm on Earth will spur humans to build larger dishes more capable of receiving weak signals.
It is unlikely that Earth and an advanced civilization far from the sun will engage in much communication. That's because it can take years for a signal to travel from one planet to the other. The closest star, Alpha Centauri, is only 4.3 light-years away. If an advanced civilization exists on a (yet-unseen) planet around the star, it would take over eight years for a signal to travel from Earth to that world and back.
In addition to accidental broadcasts, Earth has sent a handful of messages into space. In 1974, a simple message was transmitted from Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Both NASA and Russia have since sent a handful of brief, deliberate signals into space since then, according to the SETI Institute.
SETI - All About The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence (Documentary)
When an interesting signal is detected, scientists must first verify it came from beyond Earth. By confirming observations with another radio telescope, they can make sure they have not picked up a human-created signal. Even if the original detector determines that the source didn’t come from Earth, additional instruments provide “duplication,” an important part of the scientific process.
"Once an artificial signal is confirmed as being of extraterrestrial intelligent origin, the discovery will be announced as quickly and as widely as possible," said the SETI Institute.
"There will be no secrecy, and indeed getting the word out quickly is important as there would be an urgent need to have astronomers world-wide monitor any detected signal 24 hour a day."
Other seekers
While the SETI Institute is easily the most well-known seeker of signs of advanced civilizations, they are not the only ones. The University of California, Berkeley has several SETI programs under way, including one using the Arecibo Observatory. Italy's University of Bologna also has a radio SETI search in progress. Both Berkeley and Harvard University in Boston have optical SETI searches in progress.
In a 2014 presentation to Congress, Shostak predicted that life would be found on worlds other than Earth in the near future.
"It's unproven whether there is any life beyond Earth," Shostak said. "I think that situation is going to change within everyone's lifetime in this room."
Even if no sign of an advanced civilization is found, the SETI Institute remains optimistic.
According to their website, "We are just scratching the surface of what a modern search can do. Failure to find a signal wouldn’t prove that we’re the only thinking beings in the Galaxy. After all, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."
"The SETI Institute intends to press the search. Needless to say, the march of technology and new scientific discoveries will influence future SETI strategies. But giving up is not in the cards. Christopher Columbus did not turn around simply because he failed to find any new lands during his first few days at sea."
6 MILLION YEARS AGO THE MILKY WAY’S SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE RAGED
6 million years ago, when our first human ancestors were doing their thing here on Earth, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way was a ferocious place. Our middle-aged, hibernating black hole only munches lazily on small amounts of hydrogen gas these days. But when the first hominins walked the Earth, Sagittarius A was gobbling up matter and expelling gas at speeds reaching 1,000 km/sec. (2 million mph.)
The evidence for this hyperactive phase in Sagittarius’ life, when it was anActive Galactic Nucleus (AGN), came while astronomers were searching for something else: the Milky Way’s missing mass.
There’s a funny problem in our understanding of our galactic environment. Well, it’s not that funny. It’s actually kind of serious, if you’re serious about understanding the universe. The problem is that we can calculate how much matter we should be able to see in our galaxy, but when go looking for it, it’s not there. This isn’t just a problems in the Milky Way, it’s a problem in other galaxies, too. The entire universe, in fact.
Our measurements show that the Milky Way has a mass about 1-2 trillion times greater than the Sun. Dark matter, that mysterious and invisible hobgoblin that haunts cosmologists’ nightmares, makes up about five sixths of that mass. Regular, normal matter makes up the last sixth of the galaxy’s mass, about 150-300 billion solar masses. But we can only find about 65 billion solar masses of that normal matter, made up of the familiar protons, neutrons, and electrons. The rest is missing in action.
Astrophysicists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have been looking for that mass, and have written up their results in a new paper.
“We played a cosmic game of hide-and-seek. And we asked ourselves, where could the missing mass be hiding?” says lead author Fabrizio Nicastro, a research associate at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and astrophysicist at the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF).
“We analyzed archival X-ray observations from the XMM-Newton spacecraft and found that the missing mass is in the form of a million-degree gaseous fog permeating our galaxy. That fog absorbs X-rays from more distant background sources,” Nicastro continued.

Nicastro and the other scientists behind the paper analyzed how the x-rays were absorbed and were able to calculate the amount and distribution of normal matter in that fog. The team relied heavily on computer models, and on the XMM-Newton data. But their results did not match up with a uniform distribution of the gaseous fog. Instead, there is an empty “bubble”, where this is no gas. And that bubble extends from the center of the galaxy two-thirds of the way to Earth.
What can explain the bubble? Why would the gaseous fog not be spread more uniformly through the galaxy?
Clearing gas from an area that large would require an enormous amount of energy, and the authors point out that an active black hole would do it. They surmise that Sagittarius A was very active at that time, both feeding on gas falling into itself, and pumping out streams of hot gas at up to 1000 km/sec.
Which brings us to present day, 6 million years later, when the shock-wave caused by that activity has travelled 20,000 light years, creating the bubble around the center of the galaxy.
Another piece of evidence corroborates all this. Near the galactic center is a population of 6 million year old stars, formed from the same material that at one time flowed toward the black hole.
“The different lines of evidence all tie together very well,” says Smithsonian co-author Martin Elvis (CfA). “This active phase lasted for 4 to 8 million years, which is reasonable for a quasar.”
The numbers all match up, too. The gas accounted for in the team’s models and observations add up to 130 billion solar masses. That number wraps everything up pretty nicely, since the missing matter in the galaxy is thought to be between 85 billion and 235 billion solar masses.
This is intriguing stuff, though it’s certainly not the final word on the Milky Way’s missing mass. Two future missions, the European Space Agency’s Athena X-ray Observatory, planned for launch in 2028, and NASA’s proposed X-Ray Surveyor could provide more answers.
Who knows? Maybe not only will we learn more about the missing matter in the Milky Way and other galaxies, we may learn more about the activity at the center of the galaxy, and what ebbs and flows it has gone through, and how that has shaped galactic evolution.
