This could also be a message sent through subspace aimed to reach us and test our intelligence, to see if we are ready for contact. There are some things in the universe that you simply can't escape. Death. Taxes. Black holes. If you time it right, you can even experience all three at once.
Black holes are made out to be uncompromising monsters, roaming the galaxies, voraciously consuming anything in their path. And their name is rightly deserved: Once you fall in, once you cross the terminator line of the event horizon, you don't come out. Not even light can escape their clutches.
But in movies, the scary monster has a weakness, and if black holes are the galactic monsters, then surely they have a vulnerability. Right?
Hawking to the rescue
In the 1970s, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking made a remarkable discovery of a secret buried under the complex mathematical intersection of gravity and quantum mechanics: Black holes glow, ever so slightly, and given enough time, they eventually dissolve. Wow! Fantastic news! The monster can be slain! But how? How does this so-called Hawking radiation work?
Well, general relativity, which describes how gravity behaves, is a supercomplicated mathematical theory. Quantum mechanics is just as complicated. It's a little unsatisfying to respond to "How?" with "A bunch of math," so here's the standard explanation: The vacuum of space is filled with virtual particles, little effervescent pairs of particles that pop into and out of existence, stealing some energy from the vacuum to exist for the briefest of moments, only to collide with each other and evaporate, returning to nothingness.
Every once in a while, a pair of these particles pops into existence near an event horizon, with one partner falling in and the other free to escape. Unable to collide and evaporate, the escapee goes on its merry way as a normal nonvirtual particle.
Voilà! The black hole appears to glow as particles and radiation escape. In doing the work to separate a virtual particle pair and promote one of them into normal status, the black hole gives up some of its own mass. Subtly, slowly, over the eons, black holes dissolve. Not so black anymore, huh?
Here's the thing: I don't find that answer especially satisfying, either. For one, that explanation does not appear in Hawking's original 1974 paper which unveiled the process, and for another, it's just a bunch of jargon that fills up a couple of paragraphs but doesn't really go a long way in explaining this behavior. It's not necessarily wrong, just … incomplete.
Let's dig in. It'll be fun.
The way of the field
First things first: "Virtual particles" are neither virtual nor particles. In quantum field theory — scientists' modern conception of the way particles and forces work — every kind of particle is associated with a fieldthat permeates all of space-time. These fields aren't just simple bookkeeping devices; they are active and alive. In fact, they're more important than particles themselves. You can think of particles as simply excitations — or "vibrations" or "pinched-off bits," depending on your mood — of the underlying field.
Sometimes, the fields start wiggling, and those wiggles travel from one place to another. That's what we call a "particle." When the electron field wiggles, we get an electron. When the electromagnetic field wiggles, we get a photon. You get the idea.
Sometimes, however, those wiggles don't really go anywhere. They fizzle out before they get to do something interesting. Space-time is full of the constantly fizzling fields.
What does this have to do with black holes? Well, when one forms, some of the fizzling quantum fields can get trapped — some permanently, appearing within the newfound event horizon. Fields that fizzled near the event horizon end up surviving and escaping. But due to the intense gravitational time dilation — which says that the faster you travel, the more time seems to slow down — near the black hole, they appear to come out much, much later in the future. In their complex interaction and partial entrapment with the newly forming black hole, the temporarily fizzling fields get "promoted" to become normal, everyday ripples — in other words, particles.
So Hawking radiation isn't so much about particles popping into existence near a present-day black hole, but rather the result of a complex interaction at the birth of a black hole that persists until today. You can think of that complex interaction as preventing the black hole from ever growing to its maximum possible extent — even at its birth it was doomed to disappear.
Patience, child
One way or the other, as far as we can tell, black holes do dissolve. I emphasize the "as far as we can tell" bit because, as I said at the beginning, generality is all sorts of hard, and quantum field theory is a beast. Put the two together, and there's bound to be some mathematical misunderstanding.
But with that caveat, we can still look at the numbers, and those numbers tell us we don't have to worry about black holes dying anytime soon. A black hole with the mass of the sun will last a wizened 10^67 years. Considering that the current age of our universe is a paltry 13.8 * 10^9 years, that's a good amount of time. But if you happened to turn the Eiffel Tower into a black hole, it would evaporate in only about a day. I don't know why you would, but there you go.

The things most people know about helium are that it makes balloons float up and it makes your voice squeaky if you inhale some. But helium is more than just fun and games: it is also a scarce industrial resource with important uses in technology and medicine — and scientists are still learning more about its many strange properties.
So let's get this party started, with some of the most unusual applications and facts about helium.

1. Lighter than air
Helium is one of lightest and least dense of all the chemical elements, thanks to the chemical stability and extremely small size of single helium atoms. Helium's low density is what causes balloons filled with the gas to float, buoyed up by the denser surrounding air.

2. Under the sea
Because helium is easily compressed and non-toxic, it is used in specialized "breathing mixtures" of gases for very deep scuba diving, as a replacement for the nitrogen that makes up about 75 percent of our air.
At high pressures, such as underwater below around 100 feet (30 meters), dissolved nitrogen can quickly build up in body tissues and cause fatal decompression illness, or dangerous bouts of "nitrogen narcosis," an effect similar to sudden and extreme drunkenness.
To get around the problems of breathing nitrogen, technical and commercial divers who plunge to depths of up to 400 feet (122 m) or beyond use breathing mixtures like "heliox," in which the fraction of nitrogen in the air has been replaced with helium.

3. Powering the sun
Helium takes its name from "Helios," the Greek god of the sun, which was where the chemical element was discovered in the 1860s, by astronomers studying the signature "gas absorption lines" of the color spectrum of sunlight.
Helium makes up around 45 percent of the mass of the sun, where it is formed at scorching temperatures by the fusion of hydrogen — the primary process that keeps the sun and all the stars burning.
In turn, atoms of helium are fused in stars to create the heavier elements, including carbon, oxygen and silicon.

4. Over the moon
Most helium atoms have two proton and two neutron particles in the nucleus, an isotope called helium-4. But some form an isotope with two protons and just one neutron, called helium-3, which has been proposed as an ideal fuel for fusion power generation.
Helium-3 is almost unknown on Earth. But, it has been identified in large quantities on the moon, where helium from the solar wind has rained onto the lunar surface for billions of years. Several space agencies, including those in Russia, China and India, have suggested helium-3 could provide a potential payoff for lunar exploration.

5. Super cool
Helium gas condenses into a liquid at extremely low temperatures, around minus 450 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 268 degrees Celsius) at atmospheric pressure, and starts to exhibit very strange behavior at even lower temperatures.
Below minus 456 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 271 degrees C), just a shiver above absolute zero, helium-4 becomes a so-called superfluid, with about 1/8th of the density of water and zero friction. Among the many curious properties of superfluid helium is its ability to quickly flow through any leak, and even upwards along the walls of a container, which means it's extremely difficult to keep it from escaping.

6. vision
Because helium easily liquefies at such low temperatures, it is used as a coolant for powerful superconducting electromagnets, such as the magnets used in the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland.
Liquid helium is also used to cool the ring-shaped magnetic coils in hospital MRI scanners to temperatures of about minus 441 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 263 degrees C), which allows them to generate brief but intense magnetic fields.
The magnetic fields cause atoms inside the body to resonate with their own magnetic signatures, which can be detected by the scanner and used to build a detailed image of internal organs and tissues.

7. In short supply
It takes billions of years for pockets of helium to form in the Earth’s crust from the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium. This makes it hard to find, and for many years, the price of helium for applications like MRI scanners has been rising.
For many years, the world’s single main supplier was the Federal Helium Reserve near Amarillo, Texas, which was established after World War I to secure American supplies of helium as a lifting gas for military airships.
In the 1950s, during the Cold War, helium found a new use: purging and pressurizing the rocket engines of nuclear missiles and space missions.

8. Helium horde
In recent years, some natural gas producers in the U.S., Canada and Qatar have started to tap small concentrations of helium, which has eased the rise in price.
Recently, scientist announced the discovery of a major helium gas field at Rukwa, in the East African Rift Valley region of Tanzania, which may be even larger than the entire helium reserves of the United States.
This discovery and others like it may ease global demand, but scientists have warned that helium is the “ultimate non-renewable resource” – hard to find, difficult to keep, and impossible to recycle.
A group of humans migrating out of Africa some 40,000 to 70,000 years ago mingled with an as-yet unknown branch of humanity, researchers say.
Modern humans originated about 150,000 to 200,000 years ago in Africa. However, scientists have long debated when and how the modern human lineage spread out of Africa to nearly every corner of the globe. Nearly everyone outside Africa descended from an exodus that occurred between 40,000 and 70,000 years ago, but recent archaeological findings and climate models suggest that migrations of modern humans from Africa began at least 100,000 years ago.
One way to find out whether, in the past, modern humans dispersed from Africa in one wave or many — and to see if they intermingled with any other human lineages along the way — is to examine the genomes of present-day modern humans. [See Photos of Our Closest Human Ancestor]
We're interested in understanding how our species has come to be how it is through the lens of ancient DNA," said Swapan Mallick, bioinformatics director at Harvard Medical School in Boston and lead author of one of the three studies appearing in the Sept. 22 issue of the journal Nature.
Previous human genetic databases often sampled a relatively narrow range of populations, which could skew results or miss key details aboutthe migrations of modern humans out of Africa. Now, three studies have collected new, high-quality data from 787 human genomes from more than 280 geographically diverse populations around the world, including typically understudied and rapidly disappearing groups.
Among the understudied groups researchers looked at are African populations, which have considerable genetic, linguistic and cultural diversity. They also examined genomes from Australia, where previous research uncovered some of the earliest archaeological and fossil evidence of modern humans outside Africa.
New branch of humanity?
The genetic analyses revealed the genomes of present-day aboriginal Australians might harbor evidence of ancient interbreeding with an unknown human lineage.
"Who these people are, we don't know," said Eske Willerslev at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and senior author of one of the three studies.
Recent work suggested that Denisovans have contributed about 5 percent of their DNA to the genomes of present-day people of the Pacific islands of Oceania. However, these new findings suggest that what seemed to be evidence of Denisovans in the Pacific were actually signs of an unknown human lineage.
"These guys were very distantly related to Denisovans, but by no means Denisovan," Willerslev told Live Science. "They were even more distantly related to Neanderthals, and they might have been even more distantly related to modern humans. We believe that they interbred with modern humans shortly before modern humans crossed into the ancient continent of Sahul — what is now Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania — some 50,000 to 60,000 years ago."
Leaving Africa
The new findings also shed light on the controversy over whether modern humans dispersed from Africa in a single exodus or in multiple distinct waves at different times. When it came to people from Papua New Guinea, "we could discover, in the genomes of the Papuan individuals analyzed here, small traces of an additional, early expansion out of Africa that was previously hypothesized only from archaeological remains," Mait Metspalu, an evolutionary geneticist at the Estonian Biocenter in Tartu, Estonia, and senior author of one of the three studies, told Live Science.
The researchers suggest that at least 2 percent of the Papuan genome harbors traces of an early migration that happened about 120,000 years ago. Previous research suggested that non-Africans largely descend from an exodus that happened between 40,000 and 70,000 years ago.
"Our results, while for the most part confirming the already accepted model of a single expansion out of Africa as the source event of all non-African populations, show that additional expansions were not as unlikely as we thought," Luca Pagani, a molecular anthropologist at the Estonian Biocenter and lead author of one of the three studies, told Live Science.
Oldest living population
The scientists also discovered that aboriginal Australians "are one of the oldest living populations on Earth, and have been in the same area for the past 50,000 to 60,000 years," Willerslev said.
There was a great deal of controversy "over whether or not aboriginal Australians directly descend from the first humans entering Australia," Willerslev said. "The answer to that question is yes — our data is completely consistent with aboriginal Australians descending from the first humans to enter Australia. It shows a very long connection between those people and the land. [How Did Life Arise on Earth]
"I can't think of any other place in the world where humans have been so long in the same spot as Australia," Willerslev said. "Yes, there are populations in Africa that are older, but we have no idea if they stayed in the same area in Africa for as long a time."
This is the first comprehensive population-level whole-genome study of human genetic diversity in Australia. "We found that because aboriginal Australians have spent such a long time in Australia, they are very genetically diverse," Willerslev said. "An aboriginal Australian from eastern Australia and one from southwestern Australia are almost as different genetically as an Asian is from a European."
The researchers noted that about 90 percent of aboriginal Australians speak languages belonging to a single linguistic family, "but some people in northwest Australia speak other language families," Willerslev said. "It'd be very interesting to see what the story is there when it comes to how they migrated to Australia."

5,000-Year-Old Swirling Rock Art in Scotland Remains a Mystery

Archaeologists in Glasgow, Scotland, briefly excavated and then reburied a 5,000-year-old slab of stone that contains incised swirling geometric decorations.
The Cochno Stone, which measures 43 feet by 26 feet (13 by 8 meters), contains swirling decorations, also called "cup and ring marks." The stone and its decorations have been known to people in the area since at least the 19th century. Decorations similar to these swirls have been found atother prehistoric sites around the world; however, the examples incised in the Cochno Stone are considered to comprise "one of the best examples" of such art in Europe, according to a statement by the University of Glasgow, which led the new study.
The stone slab was fully unearthed in West Dunbartonshire by Rev. James Harvey in 1887. By 1965, the stone had been vandalized with graffiti and damaged by the elements, so a team of archaeologists buried it beneath the dirt in order to protect the artwork . This summer's two-week re-excavation allowed archaeologists to use modern-day surveying and photography techniques to better record the artwork. For instance, digital-scanning and mapping experts from the Factum Foundation used cutting-edge 3D-imaging technology to make a detailed digital record of the site, according to the university statement.
The re-excavation also revealed 19th- and 20th-century graffiti etched alongside the swirls, as well as painted lines intentionally made by an archaeologist named Ludovic Maclellan Mann, who worked at the site in 1937. Mann painted lines on the Cochno Stone to help measure the prehistoric artwork and see if there was a link to astronomical phenomena, such as eclipses.
Mann "was trying to prove that the symbols could predict eclipses and were marking movements of the sun and moon in prehistory," said Kenny Brophy, an archaeologist and senior lecturer at the University of Glasgow, in a video released by the university. He said that Mann's own data ended up disproving the archeologist's theory.
The meaning of the artwork is still unknown, said Brophy, adding that the vast amount of data gathered this summer may, in time, allow archaeologists to better understand the artifact. He said that the graffiti is also of interest and will help archaeologists better understand what people who lived in the local area thought of the artwork during the 19th and 20th centuries and how they incorporated it into their lives.
While archaeologists had to rebury the swirling prehistoric artwork in order to protect it, Brophy said he hopes that one day it will be possible to create an area where the rock art can be permanently revealed for both tourists and people in the local area to see. Funding will have to be obtained to build a protective area and visitors centre so that people can view the prehistoric artwork without damaging it.
"It is emotional when you have worked on a project such as this, touched it, walked on it and closely examined it, to then rebury it. But for now, that is what we have to do to protect it from the elements," Brophy said in the statement. "Perhaps in the future, this site could be turned into a major tourist attraction in Scotland, with a visitor center — who knows?"

1. Earth forms
It's hard to know when the Earth first formed, because no rocks have survived from the planet's earliest days. While scientists disagree on the details, most researchers think Earth formed by a series of collisions that took place less than 100 million years after the solar system coalesced. 2. Boom! Earth-Moon collision
The final collision in Earth's timeline was with Theia, a rocky planetoid perhaps the size of Mars. This protoplanet sideswiped Earth, leaving our planet mostly intact but destroying itself and blowing away Earth's atmosphere. Theia's vaporized debriscondensed into Earth's moon. Some researchers think remnants of the pre-collision Earth still exist deep in Earth's mantle and outer core today. The mantle is the layer between the surface crust and the core.

3. Magma ocean
The force of the moon-forming impact left Earth a churning hot magma blob. The hellish conditions meant Earth resembled Venus for a time, with a hazy, steamy atmosphere. But as the planet cooled, lava became rock and liquid water started to condense, forming Earth's first ocean. The oldest minerals found on Earth, called zircons, date back to this time and are 4.4 billion years old.

4. First continents
Today, Earth is completely covered by giant tectonic plates of continental and oceanic crust. But the young Earth's first tectonic plates were much smaller. These protocontinents were recycled volcanic rock that had been remelted, or also buried and converted to metamorphic rock. These metamorphic belts often contain rich deposits of gold, silver, copper and other precious metals. The Earth's new crust grew rapidly, with about 70 percent of the crust formed by 3 billion years ago, researchers think. The earliest chemical markers of life also appeared with the first continents, about 3.8 billion years ago.

5. Breath of life
The first whiffs of oxygen — from the evolution of photosynthesis — emerged in rocks about 3.5 billion years ago. Photosynthesis was one of.
After atmospheric oxygen levels spiked 2.4 billion years ago, not much happened on Earth for another billion years. Earth was so staid that scientists call this stretch of time the "boring billion." Things were pretty quiet tectonically, too: The continents were stuck in a supercontinental traffic jam for most of the boring billion. Many researchers think there's a link between the lack of tectonic activity and the boring billion — perhaps life needed a kick from drifting continents to drive evolution past photosynthesis, toward complex bodies
A bipartisan bill was passed by the U.S. Senate committee that oversees NASA space projects. The bill would allocate $19.5 billion in funds to NASA in 2017, but it has a critical mission for the space agency: send men to Mars.
FUNDS ARE ON THE WAY
It looks like Republican and Democratic senators alike are keen on safeguarding America’s space programs. With the potential chaos of a new president on the horizon, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation passed a bipartisan bill giving NASA $19.5 billion to continue working on a mission to Mars. It also includes support for the continuation of the program to send astronauts on private rockets to the International Space Station (ISS) from American soil no later than 2018.
“We have seen in the past the importance of stability and predictability in NASA and space exploration – that whenever one has a change in administration, we have seen the chaos that can be caused by the cancellation of major programs,” Republican Senator Ted Cruz, lead sponsor of the bill, commented. “The impact in terms of jobs lost, the impact in terms of money wasted has been significant.”
The NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2016 includes an overall authorization level of $19.508 billion for fiscal year 2017, but it still needs to be passed by the Senate as a whole, of course. The budget allotted is the same as what was approved by House appropriators and a bit more than the version released by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The Obama administration, likewise, proposed $19 billion in funding for NASA.
MAKING IT RAIN, NASA-STYLE
The Senate is not giving NASA money just for the sake of exploration. It is also a challenge, a mandate, actually. The bill requires that NASA make it an official goal to send crewed missions to Mars in the next 25 years.
The bill allocates funds for different components: $4.5 billion on exploration, nearly $5 billion for space operations, and $5.4 billion for science. It also does not scrap NASA’s controversial plans to send men on asteroids and collect samples by 2021. It does, however, require the space agency to regularly send progress reports to Congress, justifying its $1.4 billion cost.
“Fifty-five years after President Kennedy challenged the nation to put a man on the moon, the Senate is challenging NASA to put humans on Mars. The priorities that we’ve laid out for NASA in this bill mark the beginning of a new era of American spaceflight,” said an optimistic Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, senior Democrat on the Commerce panel.
The bipartisan support behind the new bill shows that space exploration is an issue that all parties can agree is vital to our growth as a nation and a species. Now we just have to wait to see if it passes the Senate.

Humanity pumps nearly 38.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the air each year because of fossil fuels, but one typhoon is equivalent to half the world-wide electrical generating capacity.
Now, Japanese engineer Atsushi Shimizu claims to have developed a way for humanity to harness this power.
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF EARTH
We are all farmilar with the tragedy of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which was caused by an enormous tsunami that occurred back in 2011. It brought the nuclear power debate back to life.
Now, one Japanese engineer wants to harness the power of another potentially destructive force in order to generate energy. Atsushi Shimizu has created a wind turbine that can withstand the terrible force of typhoons, and it can gather their energy to provide clean power.
“For decades, Japan has brought in European-style wind turbines, not designed for typhoon zones, and installed them with no careful consideration—they’ve broken almost entirely,” Shimizu said to CNN. Now, that could all change.
There is tremendous potential in typhoon energy—it is estimated that one typhoon is equivalent to half the world-wide electrical generating capacity, and if we could harness all of its energy, Shimizu asserts he could power Japan for 50 years.
To that end, Shimizu has constructed a special turbine, one that looks like an eggbeater. It utilizes the Magnus effect to prevent the turbine from spinning out of control. The design helps it withstand unpredictable wind directions.
HARNESSING EVERYTHING
Taking advantage of typhoon energy may seem like a moonshot, but we already have structures that can withstand hurricane force gales.
And given our current climate crisis, its not like we can afford not to do it. The green revolution is all about harnessing the power of Mother Nature and moving away from fossil fuels in order to end the current mass extinction event and help protect our biosphere. Countries like Japan are regularly battered by typhoons, and this is one way of taking advantage of the situation.
But more than that, if we are to advance as a species, we will need this type of technology. Advancing to a Type I civilization in the Kardashev scale means being able to control the elements—sunlight, volcanoes, earthquakes, and yes, even typhoons.
This could be another step towards getting humanity beyond our Type 0 classification status.
Elon Musk unveiled SpaceX's plan on Tuesdayfor humans to colonize Mars by 2022. The idea is to load 100 people into a spaceship just smaller than the Washington Monument, blast them to the Red Planet in a matter of months, then land gingerly on the surface and set up a permanent settlement.
It's that last bit some scientists are a little squeamishabout.
Space agencies all over this world have meticulously protected other planets from Earth's germs for decades. NASA even has an entire department dedicated to the task, aptly named theOffice of Planetary Protection.
If we do find alien life, NASA wants to make sure it's actually alien, and not some Earthling (likely bacteria) that hitched a ride on one of its spacecraft. That's why you always see people building spacecraft wearing white plastic suits in cleanrooms making sure the spacecraft stays immaculate.

Musk doesn't seem worried about infecting Martians — which he won't be at all surprised to find.
"There's really nothing on the surface of Mars, I think," the SpaceX CEO said during a press call Tuesday evening. "There may be subterranean, chemotrophic bacteria. I would expect they're pretty hardy, and there's not much that we could do to kick them out even if we wanted to."
As Emily Lakdawalla wrote for The Planetary Society, the organization Bill Nye heads that has proposed humans orbit Mars first and think about landing later, Earthlings are notoriously germy.
"If we keep our filthy meatbag bodies in space and tele-operate sterile robots on the surface, we'll avoid irreversible contamination of Mars — and obfuscation of the answer to the question of whether we're alone in the solar system — for a little while longer," Lakdawalla wrote in a 2015 blog post. "Maybe just long enough for robots to taste Martian water or discover Martian life."

On the flip side, alien Martian life could be just as dangerous to humans as we could be to it, which is another argument scientists make for keeping missions sterile. NASA has beenplanning a human mission to Mars, and the agency has of course weighed the risks of contaminating astronauts, or the planet they might land on.
Agency scientists who studied the issue in 2005 concluded: "All operations of an initial human mission to Mars should include isolation of humans from any direct contact with materials from Mars for planetary protection purposes."
That means a NASA trip likely wouldn't look like the one in the 2015 blockbuster, "The Martian," with Mark Watney growing potatoes, suitless inside an oxygen-filled habitat, on the planet's surface.
The SpaceX colony would probably look a lot different, too, and be much more permanent. Musk spoke about the distant possibility of growing plants on the Red Planet if they change the atmosphere, or even creating oceans where water used to flow millions of years ago.
He wouldn't be the one to make the decision to change Mars so it looks more like Earth in a process called terraforming, though.
"Terraforming would take us a long period of time, and I think, would ultimately be the decision of the people on Mars. We have to get there in the first place," Musk said. "The larger point is creating a self-sustained civilization on Mars to provide insurance for life as a whole — life as we know it."
'Out there among the stars'

Musk kept repeating this phrase, "life as we know it," which seems to basically mean "not aliens." And that is the difference between Musk's ideas and those of scientists who want to keep space free of Earth's scourge — he's prioritizing "life as we know it."
"I think, really, the planet we should be considering for protection is Earth," he said. "We can bring life as we know it, and breathe life into Mars where it doesn't exist today, and ensure that if there is some kind of cataclysmic event on Earth, that life as we know it continues to exist."
Musk's defense for sending humans to colonize Mars may not convince some scientists, but it sure is poetic:
"I think a future where we are a space-faring civilization and out there among the stars is infinitely more exciting and inspiring than one where we are not."

This piece will begin with an analysis of a debate between Dr. Jared Diamond, and one of his detractors. This will be followed by a broader analysis of the roles of Science, History, Religion, Knowledge, and Truth in human society. Dr. Diamond was born on September 10, 1937. He is an American scientist and author best known for his popular science books, The Third Chimpanzee (1991), Guns, Germs, and Steel (1997, awarded a Pulitzer Prize), Collapse (2005), and The World Until Yesterday (2012). Originally trained in physiology, Diamond is known for drawing from a variety of fields, including anthropology, ecology, geography and evolutionary biology. He is a professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The debate centered around Dr. Diamond's, Guns, Germs, and Steel. This is followed by “History Upside Down,” in The New York Review of Books, by Dr. William H. McNeil, and Dr. Diamonds response to the review, also in The New York Review of Books, along with Dr. McNeil's secondary response to Diamond. Guns, Germs, and Steel, Dr. Diamond argued, was written to show how much environmental conditions have affected the development of human society. He offered many examples from around the world that showed how one society was dominated by another because of the advantages that their given environment offered them over the environment of the people’s that they dominated, i.e., the Maori over the Moriori. These were two peoples in the far southern reaches of Polynesia that were actually of the same line. Dr. Diamond is not a historian. He is a scientist, and so when he wrote his ‘World History,’ he looked for a broad pattern in history to explain how society came to be where it is. He analyzed his sources and developed, he argued, an all encompassing answer to the problem that he was faced with. Dr. McNeil, however, is a historian, and he reviewed Guns, Germs, and Steel from that perspective. Under such constraints, historical studies normally take a much narrower approach in their work. This was Dr. McNeil's chief complaint. He felt that Dr. Diamond's approach ignored critical cultural details that were important in understanding why certain human societies made the decisions that they did. Observe how Diamond approached the question that he was trying to answer, one offered to him by a New Guinea native, Yali, who wondered why white people were always the ones with the best ‘cargo.’ One of Dr. Diamonds answers as to why Westerners had this advantage was that their environment was more conducive to the early development of agriculture. The Eurasian continent had the highest concentration of domesticatable wild plant species in the world, whereas; people’s in the Americas, Africa, and Australia, despite having been in their environments for some time did not have the same advantages as the Eurasians because they did not have as many such wild plant species available to them, if they had any at all. The numerous amounts of wild plant species that were available for domestication in Eurasia made it possible for those people to settle into sedentary lifestyles much earlier than the peoples of the other continents.
Another one of Dr. Diamonds answers to Yali’s question was that the people of the Eurasian continent had a massive advantage over the peoples of other continents in the availability of big domesticatable wild animals. Of all the major domesticated ‘work’ animals in the world, and there were fourteen that he identified, thirteen of them were in a very localized area, North Africa to the Indus River Valley, centralized in the Mesopotamian River Valley. These domesticated animals offered the peoples of Eurasia several important advantages over other peoples. He discussed this situation by observing the mass extinctions that took place in the Americas, Australia, and the Polynesian Islands upon the arrival of humans. The big animals in Eurasia and Africa had an advantage over those of the Americas and the other continents, in that their evolution took place almost directly parallel to that of humans. They evolved with humans; and thus, they developed a healthy fear of humans, which gave them certain advantages that could help them either avoid human hunters as their hunting skills improved, i.e., the Gazelle that can jump up to thirty feet into the air in one leap, or develop a mutual relationship according to the needs of the humans that were working with them. The big animals in other portions of the world had no such advantage, and so, evolving independently of humans, they were unprepared for the onslaught of highly skilled human hunters, leaving them no possible chance for future domestication. Yet another of Dr. Diamond's answers to the question was directed towards geography, specifically, the orientation and location of the earth’s continents. Eurasia is orientated east to west, and combined, is much larger than any of the other contiguous continents. Africa and the Americas are orientated north to south and Australia is not only the world’s smallest continent but is also extremely isolated. Such conditions, as argued by Dr. Diamond, gave the peoples of Eurasia a greater advantage over those of the other continents. According to Dr. Diamond, the advantages that all of these conditions offered to the peoples of Eurasia were voluminous. The greater number of easily collected and domesticatable wild plant species allowed people to settle into stationary villages a lot sooner, which also facilitated the development of agriculture a lot sooner, allowed for denser populations, the development of skilled artisans that could be fed while not having to participate in the collection of food, and the earlier development of complex political structures. The wide variety of domesticatable animal species also gave these peoples the advantage in that they were able to get more done in less time, which gave skilled artisans the time to develop more advanced technologies, such as writing and weapons, as well. This also created more surpluses in food, which allowed for even denser human populations and even more complicated political structures that came to include slave labor and organized religion. Another unique advantage that these large domesticated species gave to Eurasians was germs. Coupled with the byproducts of sedentary living, living near or directly handling bodily waste, humans were exposed to multiple deadly germs when living or working around large animals. Those peoples who were not killed by the germs, lived to pass special immunities onto their offspring. Peoples on other continents were not so lucky. Another big advantage of these conditions, per Dr. Diamond, was the rapid spread of food production and other technologies along the east to west axis of Eurasia. This meant that not all peoples had to spend the inordinate amount of time required to develop the technologies themselves, and more people could gain the advantages of the technologies more quickly. The Americas were disadvantaged by their isolation from the center of production in Eurasia as were Australia, Polynesia, and Africa. Furthermore, Africa suffered because Eurasian crops could not survive in the jungle and could not cross the deserts. There was also a problem in the Americas with the spread of crops and technology north to south after Mesoamericans, and the peoples of South America, developed their own crops and technologies much later. Once again, it seems that Dr. McNeil’s main issue with Guns, Germs, and Steel was that Dr. Diamond excluded what he considered minor cultural details that were important in understanding why certain human societies made the decisions that they did. The first question is, “Is this judgment true?” For the most part, yes, Dr. Diamond did refrain from discussing extremely narrow cultural details, however; on occasion, he did discuss cultural developments, but only in relation to a particular environmental condition that allowed for their existence. The next question is this, “Did Dr. Diamond do this on purpose?” He most assuredly did, and he did so for a very major reason. Very honestly, from the approach that he took in the book, he had very little need to care about those minor cultural details. From the reading, it can be argued that Dr. Diamond was stating that if not for the proper environmental conditions, those narrow minor details would never have had the opportunity to develop, and humans could very possibly still be hunter-gatherers, never having produced the massive and complex world-wide society that exists today. It's fairly clear that this is a scientific look at how human civilization came to be where it now is in the Twenty-First Century. However, like Dr. McNeil, I take issue with Dr. Diamond's story. Dr. McNeil focused on criticizing the overlooking of certain cultural developments that were important to the rise of human civilization. I, however, take with issue with the fact that Dr. Diamond's entire premise seems to to carry a heavy bias from the very beginning. When Dr. Diamond refers to human civilization, exactly which human civilization is he referring to? It is pretty clear that he is referring to Western Civilization, or that part of human civilization that sprang from the Mesopotamian River Valley; in fact, he openly notes in his introduction that he is explaining why it was Western Civilization that mastered the globe first. My question would then be, "Where did he get his information?" He has clearly missed the mark on the development of human civilization; for, long before Rome could even be considered a regional power in Europe, Chinese trade fleets were trading with east Africa, all points in Asia, the Middle East, and points in the Pacific. Further, long before Columbus ever set foot on the eastern edge of the Caribbean, Chinese trade fleets had reached the West Coast of the Americas. Further, they have maps to prove their work. He also seems to have missed out on the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth Century West African trade fleets that dealt with the tribes in South America and as far west as Mesoamerica. What can be seen here is that DR. Diamond used selectively tuned scientific data to promote the interests of one area of the human family over another. He did so at the expense of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, who in his work, were considered to be lagging behind Europe. Can our reality be so easily manipulated? Yes. If you are doubtful, ask yourself a little question. How secure is your understanding of US History? US History is based on a few foundational understandings. First, Europeans were the first to "Discover" the Americas. Second, when Europeans arrived in the Americas, the Natives were "Uncivilized" heathens. Third, the United States inherited the European banner in the Western Hemisphere by "Divine Right," and was tasked with spreading the gift of "Civilization" to the "Savages." The reality, as we have already seen to some extent, is much different. First, history, and the evidence that backs it up, has proven that both the Chines and West Africans made it to the Americas long before Columbus or any other European, for that matter; though, the Vikings did reach what is now Canada by A.D. 1000, almost five hundred years before Columbus. Of course, none of this accounts for the Inuit, who lived in the Arctic regions of the globe, traveling back and forth from Eurasia and North America over the ice sheets, long before any of these sea faring peoples. Second, when Columbus did begin the mass emigration of Europeans to the Americas, the peoples there were far from uncivilized, and they heavily defied Dr. Diamonds East to West paradigm. From the North going South, there was the Mississippian Culture that inhabited the center of the North American continent, the Aztecs, or the "Mexia," in what is now Central Mexico, the Maya in the Yucatan and the Northern reaches of the Central American Isthmus, the Inca, and several empires before them, situated on the Andes Mountains, and what archaeologists are beginning to uncover the remains of, a result of deforestation combined with modern satellite technology, a civilization that likely centered around the outer Amazon River Basis. On this last one, there is much work left to be done, though. So, the basic fundamentals of "American" History are a carefully collected bundle of Euro Facts and Illusionary Falsehoods assembled to ensure that Western Civilization is given credit for "Discovering," "Civilizing," and "Globalizing" an entire hemisphere that was already inhabited by advanced civilizations that had already long had contact with the Eastern world. So, it has now been shown that both science and history can be intentionally taken out of context to, essentially, say or support just about whatever the person handling the information wants it to say, even to the point of ignoring or discarding information that offers a glaring contradiction to the story that the person wants to push. Religion can do much the same thing. Take the primary religion of Western Civilization, Christianity, for example. The entire religion is based upon one of the greatest fallacies ever perpetrated by human kind. Jesus the Christ, the central most figure in the Christian religion, has absolutely no basis, whatsoever, in historical fact. There is nothing written of him in contemporary historical sources. His birth and life can be not accounted for in the contemporary records of the Jews, and even more importantly, there is no mention of a Yeshua bin Yosef, Jesus Son of Joseph, or Jesus the Christ, in the contemporary records of the Roman Empire. Neither, is there any ancillary mention of such a man in the records of the Parthian Empire. This means that during the time period in which the Christian bible reports he existed, 5 B.C. to 30 A.D., there is no evidence of the man's existence in one of the most heavily populated and most commercially mobile regions of the world. Two advanced civilizations could not account for a man that healed the sick, as if by miracle, and fed five thousand people with only two fish and three loafs of bread. The first actual mention of the Christ by any historical writer was made by Josephus in 92 A.D., sixty plus years after the Jesus figure would have died and ascended into heaven, another dramatic fact that cannot be corroborated. His work has long since been discredited because he had no sources to back up his references to the Christ. What is more likely, and several historians have offered remarks to this effect, is that the story of the Christ figure is based upon several figures that existed during the period in question. They were reporting to do similar things that are accorded to the Christ, claiming to be the coming Messiah, and promising freedom from Rome. As for the spiritual aspects of the figure, most historians agree that the life of Jesus is based upon the legend of the Egyptian god Horace. Some also believe that aspects of Zoroastrianism made their way into the mix. Many say that that this is what is responsible for the Book of Revelation. Regardless of where the various parts of the story come from, a religion was crafted upon this information that is now used to control the actions of billions of people around the world. What has just transpired was a brief display of what people can do when they mishandle or intentionally appropriate for nefarious purposes, two very important items, knowledge and truth. Knowledge can generally be referred to as facts, understanding, and skills acquired through research and experience. Knowledge can be pursued in many ways. The three listed, Science, History, and Religion, are but a view of the methods available. Truth is, quite simply, the most generally accepted interpretation of gathered knowledge. This is a generalized definition, but what it basically means is that truth can be just about anything, as long as it is accepted by the greater majority of a given society. It also means that whatever truth is accepted does not have to be as at all accurate. It can be as biased as a society is willing to push it. As such, there are three general "Truths" accepted by a general majority of the American population, which tend to formulate what can be most assuredly referred to as the "Great American Myth." These truths are that Western Civilization is the ascendant power in the world, supported by evolution, geography, and agriculture, and millions of year of "quality" scientific data; that Western Civilization, historically, has been able to master the needed technology to overcome the most difficult of obstacles in the their pursuit of "Civilization," and are thus, somehow entitled to the spoils of their conquests; and finally, Western Civilization is backed by the power of "Almighty God," so, anything that they do, no matter how gruesome, is justified, especially when their actions are committed against the mindless heathens that were not able to master what "God" gave them. These truths have been used to justify the conquest of the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific by various European powers and the United States. It has been justified to economically enslave vast areas of globe in the name of profit and civilization. While these truths can be applied to the United States internationally, they have most glaringly been applied to the United States on the domestic front. So, the American Myth begins to take shape. A country has been formed on the North American continent that was established by white people, for white people, and is maintained by white people. They have established a scientific reason for their prominence, they have written history, such that it supports their way of life, and they have built a socio-religious culture that sanctifies the rule of the white man. This country was built on the backs of African slaves, whose descendants are still largely relegated to second class citizenship, if that. It has prospered on the backs of immigrants, who have been either forced to abandon their ancient cultural heritage to fit in to white culture, or who have now been deemed "Illegal," and it has been held up and justified by a religion that condemns all non-believers to the depths of hell, and more tragically, to social exclusion. The United States is still the land of the WASP, or the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Do you not think that this is the case? Attempt to challenge the power of the white man. Develop science that counters the pre-eminence of the white man, write history that minimizes the role of the white man, and create a religion that equalizes the soul of the white man with the rest of humanity; and then, watch your work be deemed pseudo science, revisionist history, or heresy. This is the reality in this country, and it is why it is so hard for anyone of color to break any barriers of any kind. This country was not designed to be their home. It was designed to be their prison. When Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, he was not referring to all of the people in this country. Though, the text of his speech read, "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the Earth;" what he really meant was, "and that government of white people, by white people, and for white people shall not perish from the Earth."

FLIR expert says UFO video caught by police in Wales is “peculiar”
The National Police Air Service of St. Athan in Wales tweeted a video of an object caught on their helicopter mounted infrared camera that they could not see with their eyes. Apparently, they are baffled by the object and are asking their twitter followers for help identify the object. We spoke with a FLIR expert, and he agrees, the video is “peculiar.”
The video was posted on twitter on September 23, 2016. The comment with the tweet read, “Any suggestions?? Nothing seen by local [Air Traffic Control]??” The tweet included an alien face emoji.
The video shows a round object that appears to moving through the sky. It is black, meaning that the object is emitting heat. The infrared camera is made to pick up heat and it shows high heat sources as black.
When asked when the video was captured, NPAS responded, “It was on Saturday night about 21:30 and was spotted over the Bristol channel at approx 1000ft.”
It was suggested it was a balloon, but NPAS replied, “Only slight problem is the amount of heat and it was travelling into wind?”
As for the size, when asked, NPAS replied, “Really difficult to judge the size but we filmed it for just over 7 minutes as we were coming back into land.”
And when asked if it is a Chinese Lantern, NPAS said, “We really don’t know but doubt it was a lantern as it was going into the wind.”

They also said they did try to capture the object with a daylight camera, but nothing showed up. Not being able to see the object is another indication it was not a Chinese Lantern, as it would have been glowing.
NPAS says the video they posted, which is a little over a minute long, is only part of the full video. They say the full video is seven minutes. When asked where it is, they say the police have it now. It appears the NPAS filmed a video screen with a cell phone in order to post it online. For a few frames, the person filming the videocan be seen.

The video is a bit reminiscent of another infrared UFO video caught by law enforcement in Puerto Rico in 2013. I reached out to David, an infrared camera expert who works on law enforcement systems. He alsoanalyzed the Puerto Rico UFO video for us. He found the NPAS video to be very “peculiar.”

David wrote: “From what I could gather from the video, the FLIR they’re using is most likely a STAR HD from FLIR Systems Inc., which is a high-definition infrared system. They are flying in the dark, so the only video they got a good look at the object with was in the infrared (IR). It might have also had a Low-Light sensor on it, but it may or may not have been useful. I primarily work on these systems, and know them well.”
David is not so sure the object is moving, in fact he states, “This object doesn’t deviate in elevation hardly at all. The FLIR azimuth (left-right) travel is definitely moving, to which I can guess is because of the travel of the helicopter. However, the elevation travel only ranges from -8 to +6 degrees. This might also be due to the travel of the helicopter. In other words, it appears as if this object is stationary in the sky.”
“I see where they switched over to the day cam and got nothing but a black screen,” David continued. “Later, I see that they attempted to focus the object, as seen by the “slider bar” in the top left. They go through all of the Fields of View: wide, medium, narrow, super narrow, and ultra narrow. This system uses a ‘step-zoom’ that flips lenses into place.”

As for what the object might be, David is not too sure.
“Things I can immediate dismiss: types of balloons, bird, aircraft. I wouldn’t totally dismiss a drone out yet, but it would be very large, hot, and circular in appearance.”
Although David disagrees that the object might be moving, he finds that aspect puzzling.
“The strangest part of this video is what appears to be total lack of travel by the object. The twitchy nature of the video when the object is shown up close is due to the movement of the directional pad that steers the FLIR in azimuth and elevation.”

In the video, the object does appear to be moving. However, it could be the helicopter’s movement that causes that effect. As the helicopter moves, if the object is stationary, the background will move, making it appear the object is moving when it is not.
However, if the object is not moving, that would still be odd. A balloon or Chinese Lantern would move with the wind.
As for the distance, David says, “It seems to me that it is a good distance from the helicopter. Hard to tell, maybe a mile or two.”

So the mystery continues.
The story is beginning to get attention from mainstream press. The latest being the UK paper The Telegraph. However, no one has come up with a solid idea of what the object might have been, yet.
David, who prefers I not use his last name, says he will show his colleagues the video and let us know if they come up with anything. OpenMinds.tv will let you know if they have more to add.
A Florida witness at St. Augustine reported watching a disc-shaped UFO hovering in the night sky before moving out over the ocean, according to testimony in Case 79397 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness is a MUFON Field Investigator who was taking out the trash at 9:39 p.m. on September 25, 2016, when the incident began.
“As I watched my garage door go up, immediately in front of me was a UFO hovering in alignment over the house across the street, but farther behind it,” the witness stated. “See house photo which shows my neighbor’s house, but in daylight.”

The witness immediately recognized the object as something unusual.
“My first thought was ‘OMG a UFO!’ It was way too big for a plane. A second later as the lights strobed and reflected off the body I realized the lights were a wrong color(too much blue) for a plane, and it was far too big and too slow to be a plane, slower than even a slow helicopter. My vision is about 20/35 without my glasses, so I ran inside to get my glasses. It was hovering at about 30 degrees in elevation and 10 degrees north.The sky was mostly clear with only a few clouds (cloud base 3,100-6,500 feet according to the weather report), wind northeast at 8 mph, temperature was 78 degrees and humidity was 78 percent.”
The witness described the object.
“It was disc-shaped, but had sharp points on the top and bottom. There was a larger oval, very bright, white light on the top point that blinked, not strobed. That light was so bright it hurt my eyes. Surrounding the object along its side were strobing multi-colored lights that strobed from white/blue/green/red/ yellow very quickly. They reflected off the body that seemed to be dull gray, but sometimes looked dull amber depending on the color of the lights strobing at the moment. Its speed was quite slow, slower than a slow helicopter.”

The object also turned off its lights.
“Twice, all of its lights went out at once for about two seconds and then the lights came back on as it hovered in the same place. Initially it hovered for about two minutes over the house, (I counted 110 seconds after I retrieved my glasses) and then it headed east for about 10 seconds, stopped for 2-3 seconds, headed back west for about 10 seconds, stopped for 2-3 seconds, and then headed southeast.It had significant sideways movement as described, but its altitude did not change much other than slight wobbling.”
The object also moved into a cloud at one point.
“Once it went inside a cloud, the cloud lit up with the multi-colored lights and then it came out of the cloud, so its elevation was at least 3,100 feet, meaning it had to be pretty big to appear penny-size at arm’s length and 3,100 feet up.”
The object soon moved away.
“It moved slowly southeast of me and I lost sight of it when it was behind some woods. From its height and distance, it should have been over the Atlantic Ocean at that point. From the direction it moved, it may have been over downtown St. Augustine and/or St. Augustine Beach at some point, so I wonder if MUFON will get more reports. I watched it for a total of approximately six minutes. There were no animal or psychological effects and no missing time.”

Al jarenlang krijgen wij meldingen van mensen die vreemde oranje of witte bollen zien aan de hemel die zich voortbewegen zonder geluid te maken.
Ook nu krijgen wij weer prachtige opnames binnen en de vorm lijkt veel op een object dat onlangs is waargenomen bij de bosbranden in Californië.

Het gebeurt niet altijd dat we raadsels kunnen oplossen, maar vandaag iemand die ervan overtuigd is het raadsel van de mysterieuze objecten boven Malaga opgelost te hebben.
Het is een Youtube gebruiker met de naam Michael Capelle die bekend staat onder zijn pseudoniem: This adventurous world of mine.
In die avontuurlijke wereld komt Michael met de volgende oplossing:
Detail is wel dat de bewuste video uit Malaga ons is opgestuurd door een lezer die hem maakte en er dus helemaal geen sprake is van een copyright overtreding.

Wanneer je in onze database kijkt, dan zie je daar veel artikelen over de vreemde, vaak oranje of witte, bollen.
Mensen die bekendstaan als heel nuchter en soms ook persoonlijk bij ons bekend zijn, doen dit soort waarnemingen en zijn dan vervolgens in verwarring omdat ze niet kunnen begrijpen en/of thuisbrengen wat ze net hebben gezien.
De bollen kunnen of in formaties verschijnen of afzonderlijk, soms bewegen ze met hoge snelheid, andere keren bewegen ze weer langzaam en statig door de lucht en nog nooit is men verder gekomen met een verklaring dan de eeuwige Thaise ballonnen.
Wij ontvingen het volgende bericht van een lezer:
Laat ik mijn naam liever anoniem houden. Zelf ben ik sinds 2012 een trouwe lezer. De familie van mijn vader zijn kant wonende in Spanje, Torre del Mar (vlakbij Malaga), heeft mijn tante een foto en filmopname gemaakt op de avond van 17september waarbij er boven de zee (Middellandse zee) maarlieft circa 13 lichtbollen voortbewogen in een soort patroon.
Hiermee weten we dan ook dat de opnames echt zijn. Dat is heel belangrijk tegenwoordig, omdat het internet wordt vol geplempt met beelden die door oplichters zelf in elkaar zijn geflanst.
Wat is dat wat deze mensen daar zagen die avond op het Spaanse strand?
Vorige maand waren er uitgebreide bosbranden in de Amerikaanse staat Californië. Verslag daarvan werd onder andere gedaan op 19 augustus 2016 vanuit een helikopter van ABC News Channel 15.
En vanuit die helikopter zagen de verslaggevers een vreemd rond object onder zich doorschieten dat zich linea recta in de richting van bosbranden spoedde.
Ook hier weer de witte ronde vorm. Dit keer niet in formatie, maar alleen en duidelijk op weg naar een bepaald doel.
Bekend is dat er vaker UFO’s worden waargenomen bij bosbranden zoals ook vorig jaar in Mexico toen er een enorme cilindervormige UFO boven een bosbrand werd gezien.
Maar, ook hier weer de vraag: Wie zijn het en wat doen ze?

News states: FOOTAGE of a mysterious flying object seen in Swindon’s skies by dozens of residents on Sunday has prompted more confirmed sightings and sparked speculation over what it could be. As reported in the Adver yesterday, former BT engineer Graham Woodward was driving home near Westcott Place with his son Stefan, 18, at 8.19pm when three ‘brilliantly white lights’ in the shape of a triangle with a red light in the centre appeared in the sky. The 62-year-old of Nelson Street is convinced it was not a drone nor a military or commercial aircraft as it had no blinking navigation lights. He could also not hear the sound of an engine when he wound his window down. “It certainly was unlike any flying object that I have ever witnessed before,” he said. The small aircraft only hovered for around three minutes before it veered to the left and vanished out of sight. Graham was so perplexed he even called police on 101 to report what he had seen. And yesterday Richard Newton shared a video with the Adver of what he describes as ‘strange lights’ hovering above Liden at the same time on Sunday as Graham spotted the mystery triangular object. “It was not a drone,” Richard said. However, after viewing the video Graham says what he saw was slightly different as the red light in the centre was not flashing but he noted the similarities of the three bright lights in a triangle. While an Old Walcot resident, who phoned the newsroom after reading the article about Graham’s sighting, said: “He’s not a crank, me and my wife saw it too. “We saw those three lights in the sky about 8.20pm coming back from West Swindon near Kingshill Road. It was definitely three bright white lights and it didn’t look like an aircraft.” Another added: “I saw something like that last year for several weeks in the Greenmeadow area while delivering newspapers at about 6am to 6.30am. It would just stay in one spot then it just vanished.” However, many have taken to the Adver’s Facebook page to dispel suggestions the video shows a UFO, instead some believe it was a C-17 Globemaster, which is a large military transport aircraft, possibly heading to Brize Norton. One person said: “My boyfriend is in love with planes and he said it's a c17 as it has a red flashing light.” Another added: “I can confirm from radar data that it was an RAF c17 at 8:20pm on Sunday night.” But Graham is not convinced. He said: “I definitely saw a triangular shaped craft over Westcott Place which is nothing like a Globemaster in shape. “Having just searched the internet there seen to be very many accounts and pictures of exactly what I saw last Sunday night.”

The unidentified flying object was observed in the sky over Turkey’s south from 8-11 a.m. The UFO reportedly traveled around 40 kilometers north and suddenly vanished. Witnesses immediately reported the sighting to the gendarmerie.
Local witnesses called the attention of their relatives living close to the area and urged them to check out the sky to see the strange event.
One of the witnesses said the unusual flying object was about the size of a minibus. The witness claimed to have been able to examine the UFO closely using his brother’s binoculars. He said it had a shape similar to a balloon. When he zoomed in, he noticed colorful particles, but still can’t identify the object.
Another group of witnesses informed the gendarmerie about the same flying object. The gendarmerie interviewed locals who claimed they spotted the suspected UFO, but the incident report has not been prepared.
Social media users posted photos of the unidentified object, with some theorizing that it was an unmanned balloon or aircraft.
Meanwhile, another local witness was able to capture the alleged UFO in the Aegean resort of Bodrum. She said two bright lights suddenly made an appearance in the sky on September 7. These objects reportedly made a turn and disappeared immediately.
The witness said that she had sent the video to a research center in hopes to shed light the identity of the UFO. She also claimed to have captured an image of a UFO in the same region
A sphere-shaped UFO was spotted and videotaped over Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania. According to the witness’ testimony, which is filed in Case 79259 of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database, the object in question has similar size of basketball.
The unnamed witness, who is a student at Slippery Rock University, ruled out bugs, dust particles, and ball lightning as possible explanations. The mysterious event reportedly started at around 10:27 p.m. on 18 September 2016.
According to the report, the witness noticed a bright dot out of the corner of his eye while doing his homework. Then he heard a bark of a dog from his neighbor. When he turned his attention to the window, he spotted a dazzling, basketball-sized UFO in white or silver color. It was the first time the student spotted such orb in his life with a light humming sound.
The report says that the ball traveled from the woods to a lamp post while pulsating in about a minute. When the sphere came closer to the light post, the lights dim initially, and when the lights came back to normal, the ball began to dance somewhat around them.
While apparently dancing, the circle started to brighten. This time, the witness took out his phone and started recording it on video. A couple of seconds later, the witness waved his hands to try to get the orb’s attention, but it started to zigzag from one point to another, and all of a sudden disappeared moving to the left.

Monique Klinkenbergh geeft in Den Haag een overzicht van haar jarenlange onderzoek naar het graancirkelfenomeen. In 2012 was ze betrokken bij een documentaire van National Geographic.
Ze doorkruiste Wiltshire in Engeland, het wereldwijde ‘epicentrum’, en ging met een vliegtuig achter aanwijzingen aan, soms met succes. “Als je ’s ochtends vroeg in een verse graancirkel staat, dan voel je je alsof je gedachten worden opgetild,” zei ze.
Volgens de voormalig hoofdredacteur van een kunsttijdschrift kunnen al die duizenden graancirkels die sinds de middeleeuwen zijn verschenen, onmogelijk allemaal mensenwerk zijn. Ze kan zich voorstellen dat magnetisme sporen in het graan trekt of misschien is er een andere verklaring.
Indianenverhalen
Het doel van haar tentoonstelling is een juist beeld te scheppen van het graancirkelfenomeen. Dit beeld werd vertekend door de onjuiste maar breed geaccepteerde theorie dat graancirkels alleen door mensen worden gemaakt.

“Zonder interesse van de wetenschap kom ik niet verder,” legde ze uit. “Graancirkels worden sinds twee Britten 25 jaar geleden bekenden er zelf een aantal te hebben gemaakt, afgedaan als grap. Er zijn heel veel indianenverhalen. Maar het is een authentiek fenomeen.”
Groeit gewoon door
Het blijft haar verbazen dat het graan als regel gebogen of zelfs gevlochten is. “Terwijl graan breekt als je dat zelf probeert,” zei ze. In een authentieke graancirkel zijn de stengels van de planten gebogen. Als het gewas niet wordt vertrapt, groeit het gewoon door.
Graancirkels zijn veelal complexe geometrische patronen die in zeer korte tijd, met name ’s nachts, maar soms ook overdag, wereldwijd in allerlei soorten gewassen ontstaan. Inmiddels zijn er meer dan 7000 in ruim 60 landen geregistreerd. De grootte kan variëren van één meter tot enkele honderden meters in doorsnee.
Onbegrepen fenomeen
Hoewel het graancirkelfenomeen een eeuwenoud verschijnsel is, kwam onderzoek pas eind 1970 in Engeland op gang en leidde tot wereldwijde belangstelling. Klinkenbergh is van mening dat, naast door mensenhanden gemaakte graancirkels, er tevens sprake is van een authentiek maar onbegrepen fenomeen.
