The Royal Canadian Navy is sending a ship to determine if a diver has discovered "the lost nuke" — a Mark IV bomb that went missing after a U.S. bomber crashed off B.C.'s North Coast in the early days of the Cold War.
Sean Smyrichinsky found the mystery object during a recent diving trip near Banks Island.
My god, I found a UFO. I found the strangest thing I'd ever seen!-Sean Smyrichinsky
"I got a little far from my boat and I found something that I'd never ever seen before," he recalled. "It resembled, like, a bagel cut in half, and then around the bagel these bolts molded into it."
When he got back to the ship he tried to describe the object to his crew.
"I came out from the dive and I came up and I started telling my crew, 'My god, I found a UFO. I found the strangest thing I'd ever seen!'"
The 'lost nuke'
Smyrichinsky started asking around and was told the story of Convair B-36B, a U.S. Air Force bomber that crashed off B.C. in 1950.
In a book published earlier this year, historian Dirk Septer traces the story of that flight, summarizing it in publicity documents as a Cold War drama:
"Just before midnight on February 13, 1950, three engines of a US Air Force B-36 intercontinental bomber caught fire over Canada's northwest coast. The crew jumped, and the plane ditched somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Almost four years later, the wreck of the bomber was found accidentally in a remote location in the coastal mountains of British Columbia, three hours' flying time in the opposite direction of where it was supposed to have crashed.
"After years of silence, the United States finally admitted to losing its very first nuclear bomb; the incident was its first Broken Arrow, the code name for accidents involving nuclear weapons. But was the bomb dropped and exploded over the Inside Passage, or was it blown up at the aircraft's resting place in the mountains?"
The lost bomb was a Mark IV. As soon as Smyrichinsky looked it up on Google Images, he recognized it as the object he had found.
"It was a piece that looked very much like what I saw," he said. "The plane that was carrying the bomb, it crashed 50 miles south of where I found that object."
"What else could it possibly be? I was thinking UFO, but probably not a UFO, right?"
Probably not nuclear
Major Steve Neta of the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed the location of Snyrichinsky's find does coincide with the site of the 1950 crash.
Neta also said records indicate the lost bomb was a dummy capsule, and so there is little risk of the object being a nuclear weapon.
"Nonetheless, we do want to be sure and we do want to investigate it further," he said.
The Royal Canadian Navy ship deployed to investigate should arrive in the area in the next few weeks.

Canadian Navy to investigate mysterious find at the bottom of Pacific Ocean
The Royal Canadian Navy is preparing to dispatch one of its warships later this month to investigate a mysterious object found by an intrepid diver in the waters off the coast of British Columbia.
Sean Smyrichinsky found the mystery object during a recent diving trip near Banks Island.
“I got a little far from my boat and I found something that I’d never ever seen before,” he said in an interview with the CBC’s Daybreak North program. “It resembled, like, a bagel cut in half, and then around the bagel these balls all cut into it, molded into it… It was the strangest thing that I had ever seen.”
(click to listen to a clip of Sean Smyrchinsky’s interview with the CBC’s Daybreak North program)
Smyrichinsky’s first impression was that he must have come across something completely alien.
“I came out from the dive and I came up and I started telling my crew ‘my god, I found a UFO!'”
However, it turned out there might be a more earthly if no less sinister explanation for Smyrichinsky’s find – a long lost U.S. nuclear bomb.
A relic of Cold War
When Smyrichinsky started asking around from more veteran divers about possible origins of the strange object, he was told the story of Convair B-36B, a US Air Force bomber that crashed off B.C.’s north coast in 1950.
When the boat he was on finally came into a cell reception area, Smyrichinsky was finally able to do some online sleuthing of his own. He found out that the bomber and its crew of 17 people was carrying a nuclear bomb, a Mark IV, which was never found after the plane crashed.
As soon as he looked up Google images of Mark IV the resemblance with the object he saw at the bottom of the ocean was obvious, Smyrichinsky said.
“It was a piece that looked very much like what I saw, a big circle with these balls,” Smyrichinsky said. “I had no idea that a nuclear bomb contained all these big balls, bigger than basketballs.”
The Convair B-36B had crashed about 50 miles south of where he found the object, Smyrichinsky said.
“That’s what really set me off,” Smyrichinsky said. “Wow! I’m right in the right area, and it looks like it could be a piece of that thing, there is nothing else like that. What else could it possibly be? I was thinking a UFO, but probably not a UFO, right?”
A dummy bomb?
Lt. (N) Greg Menzies, a spokesman for the Royal Canadian Navy, said Canadian military experts are working in close collaboration with their U.S. colleagues to determine what the object is.
(click to listen to the full interview with Lt. (N) Greg Menzies)
The navy plans to dispatch HMCS Yellowknife, a coastal defence vessel, around the third week of November to conduct an investigation, Menzies said. The navy will take Smyrichinsky on board HMCS Yellowknife with them so he can pinpoint the location of his find.
The navy will deploy a small remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that can take still and video images of objects on the ocean floor, Menzies said.
“What we will also do we will also embark a small team from Fleet Diving Unit Pacific who are very well versed in operating this kind of equipment and they will provide explosive ordinance oversight in determining what the object is when they do in fact find it,” Menzies told RCI.
Based on information provided by the U.S. military the object is most likely from the 1950 crash of the B-36B bomber, but records indicate the lost bomb was a dummy capsule and so there is little risk of the object being a nuclear weapon and posing an environmental hazard, Menzies said.
“At this point I can tell you that there is no nuclear material on this particular item and we have been confirmed that it’s actually a dummy capsule,” Menzies said.

UK X FILES -The British government ‘knows more about UFOs than it’s letting on and has own Area 51’
UK X FILES -The British government ‘knows more about UFOs than it’s letting on and has own Area 51’
A top paranormal investigator claims officials have hushed up sightings of alien craft across the UK
BY GUY BIRCHALL
THE government has been hushing up secret UFO files for years according to a top paranormal investigator.
Malcolm Robinson has made a career out of collecting UFO reports and last year called on Downing Street to open an inquiry into alien activity.
The founder of Strange Phenomena Investigations also presented a dossier to then Prime Minister David Cameron.
He claims that a tip off he received from a source inside the Ministry of Defence indicated many sightings and files have been swept under the carpet.
His findings showed the UFO department and hotline within the MoD was shut in 2008 because it no longer served a “defence purpose” and was taking staff away from “more valuable defence-related activities”.
Robinson told The Daily Star: “The governments of this world – including Britain – know far more than they are letting on, that’s for sure.”

Declassified documents also stated: “The Ministry of Defence has no opinion on the existence or otherwise of extra-terrestrial life.”
It added that in 50 years, no UFO report had revealed any proof of a potential threat to the UK.
Eight years following the closure of the department, Mr Robinson has called for an inquiry into clusters of sightings, including cold case police files from Bonnybridge, Scotland.
Over 300 UFO sightings have been reported in the small Scottish town, leading some to compare it to Area 52 in Nevada, USA.
Whether sightings are down to the extra-terrestrials or top secret technology, Robinson believes that Brits have a right to know exactly what is at play.
The UFO boffin said: “With any given sighting, we check with airports, with the National Security Agency, with the Ministry of Defence and meteorological stations to try and find a rational explanation.
Ohio witness suffers memory loss after UFO encounter
Ohio witness suffers memory loss after UFO encounter
An Ohio witness at Orwell recalled a UFO encounter from 2007 that appeared to trigger a temporary memory loss, according to testimony in Case 79781 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness first saw a black triangle UFO hovering over a bridge near Orwell, OH. Pictured: Orwell, OH.
(Credit: Google)
At 9 p.m. on October 10, 2007, the witness was on his way to work at a cabinet factory in Orwell, Ohio, a temp service position he had held for nearly three months.
“I was on the highway and was approaching a bridge,” the witness stated. “Ahead of the bridge I saw a big black, triangle craft with white lights in each corner and one red in the center. It was big enough and close enough that it blocked the sky out.”
The witness moved closer to the object.
“As I approached it, it was just sitting there hovering probably only about 100 feet above the trees and took up both sides of the highway. When I looked up as I drove under it, the red light was right above me. I have never seen anything like it.”
The witness quickly lost sight of the object. Pictured: Orwell, OH.
(Credit: Google)
The witness momentarily looked away.
“Then I remember looking in my rearview mirror and it moved off to the right very slowly. And when I tried to look back again, it was gone.”
The witness then experienced a memory loss.
“The weirdest part that bothers me to this day is that I could not remember where I was. I knew I was trying to get to work, but all the sudden had no clue where I was and I had driven this route by memory for almost 90 days. I ended up getting off at a wrong exit and got back on the highway trying to figure out how to get back home. I finally saw a sign that said Youngstown, which was kinda by where I lived in Warren, so I got off there and found my way back home and never went back to work there.”
The witness decided not to share his story.
“I was staying with my father at the time and knew I couldn’t tell him that, so I told him that I was let go from the job through the temp service. To this day I have no idea how I could have forgot how to get to work. It was like I felt funny and couldn’t make a clear thought. I’ve come to this website before, but could never bring myself to fill this out, but I think I just want people to know and maybe someone knows what it was. Thank you.”
The witness suffered a memory loss immediately after the sighting. Pictured: Orwell, OH.

Idaho witness says rectangle UFO ‘fell from sky’
An Idaho witness at Post Falls reported watching a rectangle-shaped object “falling from the sky” shortly after hearing the sound of a sonic boom, according to testimony from Case 79772 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness first stepped outside after hearing a sonic boom on October 12, 2016.
(Credit: http://www.visitpostfalls.org/)
The witness stepped outside after hearing a sonic boom about 11:45 a.m. on October 12, 2016.
“Looking south I observed what appeared to be some type of large rectangular object tumbling end over end emitting a large amount of smoke (white, gray and yellowish in color) trail as it fell,” the witness stated. “It was about four to five times the width of a typical airliner contrail and it was going straight down toward the ground.”
The witness also heard what may have been an engine trying to start.
“At one point during this approximately four-minute fall, it appeared some type of engine maybe briefly came on and emitted what looked like what could be a jet engine trying to start or work. But then it stopped and the trail became non-symmetrical again.”
The witness saw a rectangle-shaped object falling from the sky over Post Falls, ID.

The witness retrieved binoculars and tried to view it while falling.
“It intermittently reflected sunlight as it tumbled. The object appeared to be about the size of a very large military cargo plane or bigger, but more rectangular in shape. The object disappeared behind the mountains to the south of Post Falls and no doubt whatever it was hit the ground somewhere based on rate of fall and trajectory.”
The witness called local authorities.
“After the object disappeared I called Spokane FAA tower and they said thanks, but did not ask any questions or details.” There are no reports in Idaho during this time period of any aviation crashes.
Post Falls, ID, is about 25 miles east of Spokane, WA.

Silver Surfer Like UFO Spotted In Sky Over Major City In Turkey, UFO Sighting News
Date of sighting: Oct 2, 2016 Location of sighting: Turkey Original Video:
http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/TAtH3g7hp_s/?spm=a2h0k.8191414.0.0 These kids were riding in a car and suddenly saw a silver human like figure moving over the tree tops. They called it the Silver Surfer...a Marvel comic book first published in the 1968. I see the resemblance for sure, but I believe its a lightning bolt shaped alien drone...a probe to scan and then be retrieved by a larger ship later. For those who still don't know who the Silver Surfer is, I will include a video of an amazing costume from Halloween one guy had...video at bottom of post. Scott C. Waring-Taiwan Eyewitnesses state:
It was a shocking moment when a superhero silver surfer in a Marvel comic book appeared in the middle of a major city. The mysterious object was two car driving Ai Erkan? Alec and Halil? Kagera found that when it is traveling in the north-west of Turkey's fourth largest city Bursa over.
A hovering, disc-shaped UFO was reportedly photographed hovering near Kaneohe Bay in Waikane, Hawaii. The witness admitted that he did not notice any unusual while taking photos of the area. He only found out the strange object when he reviewed the images.
The witness noticed one photo that showed something not found in other pictures. He first thought of a wood chip on his lens but changed his mind after taking a closer look. The witness later realized he had spotted a UFO.
He is not an alien UFO believer, but the sighting creeped him out so much that he decided to report the case to Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).
The witness described the object as a yellow/orange disc. When he zoomed in his camera, he saw an apparent dome on the top of the UFO.
The report is filed as case 79999 in MUFON’s witness reporting database. Hawaii State Director David McManus of MUFON, David McManus, is investigating the case.
The investigation involves looking into camera lens anomalies and possible photo editing techniques. McManus would close the inquiry as unknown if the UFO in the picture can’t be explained, not something natural or human-made.

Photographer Freaks Out After Seeing A Glowing UFO Over Whitby
Photographer Andrew Beattie took a snap of what he calls a UFO over the Whitby coast, UK at around 7:30 on Monday night. He admits to being freaked out of seeing the unidentified flying object.
What do you think about the image in the photo?
Theories have ranged from the moon to meteor and from military flares to alien UFO trying to hide behind the clouds.
Yarm resident Andrew went to the beach with hopes to capture the aurora. He walked down to the sea wall close to the beach huts to see if he could get a glimpse of the aurora.
He prepared his tripod and camera in the direction of the sea.
Moments later, he was offered with a surprise as he saw a bizarre red glow over the lighthouse, around 150 feet above it. The strange light disappeared after a second. Andrew decided to point his camera to where he spotted the glowing red.
Then a yellow light appeared for a few seconds moving to the side without noise before glowing red and disappearing. Strangely enough, the clouds behind it glowed red too before it vanished.
The witness admits he freaked out a little because he has never seen anything like it.
UFO Disguises As Huge Green Fireball Over Japan, Conspiracy Theorists Claim
UFO Disguises As Huge Green Fireball Over Japan, Conspiracy Theorists Claim
A green fireball that was caught on video going down to Earth created speculations it was an alien UFO in disguise.
There’s no official confirmation yet on the mysterious object’s identity, but experts at the American Meteor Society said that the glowing green tcolor would indicate space rock with high levels of nickel.
However, conspiracy theorists have ridden the uncertainty claiming that the fireball recorded by two cameras over Niigata airport in Japan could be a UFO trying to mask itself. They said that the object disguised itself as a meteor, but made mistakes.
One mistake, they claimed, was that it glowed in green, which most meteors don’t burn as such.
Secondly, meteorites that low don’t fly horizontally, according o conspiracy theorists.
Lastly, they called it as the stupidest mistake; the main ship turned off its glow for only one-tenth of a second. At this point, a silver disk came out and moved back slowly from the main ship, according to the released theory.
They stressed that even aliens make mistakes and the pilot of the disguised UFO made a lot.
Others claimed that the supposed fireball, which was being observed 250 miles north of Japanese city Aomori, could be a piece of space junk or a falling satellite for that matter.
Curiosity Rover Finds Weird 'Egg Rock' Meteorite on Mars
Curiosity Rover Finds Weird 'Egg Rock' Meteorite on Mars
By Hanneke Weitering, Staff Writer-Producer
NASA's Mars rover Curiosity stumbled upon a dark grey, golf-ball-size object last week that looks nothing like the typical red-orange rocks that are normally seen on Mars.
To figure out exactly what this weird rock is and where it came from, Curiosity used its on-board rock-zapping laser to analyze the rock's chemical composition. This test revealed that it is an iron-nickel meteorite that fell from the Martian sky. Curiosity's science team dubbed the newfound meteorite "Egg Rock."
These types of meteorites have been discovered on both Earth and Mars in the past, but this is the first time that Curiosity's laser-firing spectrometer, the "ChemCam," has been used to study such a rock. [Here's What a Mars Meteorite on Earth Looks Like (Photos)]
ChemCam works by firing laser pulses at objects of interest. When an object is struck by the laser, the electrons around its atoms get excited and emit light of varying wavelengths, or colors, depending on the elements that are being zapped. By analyzing this emitted light, Curiosity can then determine precisely what an object is made of.
This strange rock is made up of iron, nickel, phosphorous and a few other trace elements, which led scientists to conclude that it is a meteorite that is non-native to the Red Planet. These types of meteorites come from the molten cores of asteroids.
"Iron meteorites provide records of many different asteroids that broke up, with fragments of their cores ending up on Earth and on Mars," ChemCam team member Horton Newsom said in a statement.
Scientists working with Curiosity (the rover is the centerpiece of NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission) first noticed Egg Rock on Oct. 30 in photos taken by the rover's Mast Camera, known as Mastcam.
"The dark, smooth and lustrous aspect of this target, and its sort of spherical shape attracted the attention of some MSL scientists when we received the Mastcam images at the new location," ChemCam team member Pierre-Yves Meslin said in the same statement.
Curiosity came across the meteorite in an area called the Murray formation in lower Mount Sharp. The rover will continue to explore this area as a part of its extended mission, which is focused on learning how Mars' environment changed over time, and whether the environment could have possibly harbored life in the past.
See the 1st Color Photos of Europe Mars Lander's Crash Site
See the 1st Color Photos of Europe Mars Lander's Crash Site
By Mike Wall, Space.com Senior Writer
The first color images of a European Mars lander's crash site are revealing new details about the spacecraft's unsuccessful touchdown attempt last month.
The lander, known as Schiaparelli, slammed hard into the Red Planet on Oct. 19, apparently after its descent-slowing thrusters failed to fire for long enough, officials with the European Space Agency (ESA) have said.
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) quickly spotted Schiaparelli's remains with its low-resolution camera, and then imaged the impact site in greater detail last week using its sharp-eyed High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera. And now, MRO has provided the first color views of the lander's grave, also courtesy of HiRISE. [In Photos: Europe's Schiaparelli Mars Landing Day]
The new photos, which were taken Tuesday (Nov. 1) and released today (Nov. 3), show several bright spots near the main crater where Schiaparelli hit. These features were also visible in previous MRO images, though, at the time, it wasn't clear whether they were just "noise." But it's now apparent that the spots are real objects — probably fragments of Schiaparelli, ESA officials said.
MRO's new views also reveal that a large structure believed to be Schiaparelli's parachute has changed configuration since last week's photos were taken, likely because of the Martian wind, ESA officials said. (The same effect was visible in MRO images of the parachute that helped NASA's Mars rover Curiosity land in August 2012, they noted.)
There are three distinct parts of the overall Schiaparelli crash site: the crater gouged out by the lander itself; the spot about 0.9 miles (1.4 kilometers) away where the parachute and its attached rear heat shield came down; and another feature that appears to be the spacecraft's front heat shield. MRO imaged these first two areas in color, but its new photos of the front heat shield are still in black and white.
There should be more photos coming soon.
"Further [MRO] imaging is planned in about two weeks, and it will be interesting to see if any further changes are noticed," ESA officials wrote in a statement today. "The images may provide more pieces of the puzzle as to what happened to Schiaparelli as it approached the Martian surface."
An investigation into the events of Oct. 19 is ongoing, and could be wrapped up sometime this month, ESA officials have said.
Schiaparelli launched with another spacecraft, called the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), in March. Together, the two probes make up the first part of the two-phase ExoMars program, which ESA leads with help from its chief partner, the Russian federal space agency, known as Roscosmos.
The second part of ExoMars is a life-hunting rover, which is currently scheduled to launch in 2020 and land on the Red Planet in 2021. Schiaparelli's main goal was to prove out the technology needed to get this rover down safely; the data gathered during the descent on Oct. 19 should be useful for this future effort, ESA officials have said.
TGO aced its orbit-insertion burn on Oct. 19 and is currently looping around the Red Planet along a highly elliptical path every four Earth days, just as planned. The spacecraft will make its first science observations at Mars during two orbits that begin Nov. 20, ESA officials said.
Early next year, TGO will begin shifting to a circular orbit that lies 250 miles (400 km) above the Martian surface. The probe should reach this final orbit in March 2018, at which point it will begin its official two-year science mission. The chief goals of this mission involve hunting for methane and other gases that could be signs of Martian life.
TGO will also serve to relay communications from the ExoMars 2020 rover and other surface Red Planet craft back to controllers here on Earth before ending operations in 2022.
A camera flying aboardNASA's current mission to Jupiteris snapping stunning new images of the gas giant's stormy surface, and enabling members of the public to take an active role in this historic mission.
The Juno probe is flying closer to Jupiter than any spacecraft has done in history, coming to within about 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) of the giant's stormy cloud tops. Its primary science mission is to gather information about the planet's interior — peering through its thick cloud layers and all the way down to its rocky core.
The JunoCam instrument is an exception: It takes pictures of the surface of Jupiter's cloud tops. Its mission is primarily to serve as an outreach tool: The data that is sent back to Earth is made available to the public, and "citizen scientists" are welcome to process the images and try to learn from them. Looking ahead, members of the public will be able to vote on which features JunoCam should eye next. [Jupiter Shines in Scientific and Artistic Images by Citizen Scientists (Gallery)]
The creators of the JunoCam outreach program wanted to "involve the public in every aspect of what an imaging team would ordinarily be doing," according to Candy Hansen, a Juno co-investigator and head of the JunoCam team. Hansen discussed the project during a press briefing at the 2016 meeting of the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences (AAS DPS) in Pasadena, California.
People who participate in JunoCam get to see what scientists go through during a mission — "the good days and the more challenging days, and to sort of live our lives with us," Hansen said. The goal is to allow the public to join the mission "in a participatory way, not a passive way."
Juno arrived at the Jupiter system in August, and its orbit is highly elongated, so that it comes very close to Jupiter (for only a matter of hours), and then swings far out into space. This path allows the probe to loop in between the planet's cloud tops and a ring of very intense radiation that wraps around Jupiter, which could easily destroy the electronics on board. Such a path also brings Juno closer to Jupiter than any probe in history. Juno is currently on a 53-day orbit, but it may still drop down to a 14-day orbit.
So far, JunoCam has only sent one batch of data back to Earth (since Juno has only made one close flyby with its instruments turned on). The JunoCam team posted "raw images" to the JunoCam website, and already public participants have used them to post dozens of processed images to the website. Some of the images have been processed to make it easier to see storms and physical features in Jupiter's clouds; others have been processed to create visually engaging works of art.
Citizen scientists
On the JunoCam website, people can submit processed images, and then discuss their results and techniques in the discussion section. Or, if the participants aren't processing images, they can just ask questions of the people doing the processing.
JunoCam participant Matt Brealey told Space.com that he has been "attempting to use software from the Visual Effects industry" to process the images from JunoCam. (You can see examples of his work here and here, and you can read an article he wrote about his technique here).
"I've been fascinated by space imagery for as long as I can remember, so suddenly realizing that I could in some small way be a part of creating new images was extremely exciting," Brealey told Space.com via email. "That combined with the technical challenge of using tools from the VFX industry really [piqued] my interest in the project."
The skill level among the participants varies, according to Gerald Eichstädt, a software programmer who has been processing images from JunoCam with software he wrote especially for this project (which puts him at the upper end of the skill-level spectrum). He told Space.com that many people are using commercially available software, including some that's provided on the JunoCam website.
"JunoCam images provide challenges on almost any level; you can improve your skills according to your individual capabilities," he wrote. "To squeeze out as much as possible from the JunoCam images, you need more than (technical) skills; you also need to apply your skills, either by using existing software in an appropriate way, or by developing and applying appropriate software. But there are also many things you can do with consumer software. Good creative ideas are another important factor and may well be able to compensate [for] less technical skills."
Eichstädt said that he has been working with people who have skills that are different from his own (such as extensive knowledge about Jupiter's surface features), and he has been working with them to get more out of the images he makes. He said he has processed thousands of images and has posted most of them to his own website to avoid flooding the JunoCam website.
Participants can post their processed images to the mission website for others to see — Hansen said she definitely wants people to share the images, not just "post them to their private Facebook page." The goal of some of the processing is to analyze the different features that the instrument sees on the surface, while other images are processed with the aim of creating amazing aesthetic value. Some images accomplish both of those things.
"It's pretty cool that a lot of processed images are collected in one place and people can discuss them," Roman Tkachenko, a citizen scientist who is processing JunoCam images, told Space.com. Tkachenko's images focus on identifying swirling storms and other prominent features in the atmosphere. "Many amateur image processors face the problem of having no opportunity to show their work to the public, because their audience on social media is too small. This project partially solved that problem, at least regarding images taken by Juno spacecraft."
While the JunoCam instrument is not part of the probe's suite of science instruments, its first snapshots of Jupiter revealed never-before-seen features of the Jovian giant, including clusters of storms near the planet's north pole, and a cyclone stretching 52 miles (85 km) above the base surface level, according to Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator. Bolton discussed the early results during the same press briefing at the 2016 AAS DPS meeting.
"I've not the funding to do a space mission myself, so I can save a lot of time and money by joining an existing mission funded mostly by the U.S. taxpayers," Eichstädt wrote. "Processing JunoCam images is very challenging for most people, and I knew that I would be able to do it; so it's to some degree an honor and a duty to give the U.S. taxpayers something back."
A leap of faith
Besides image processing and the discussion board, the JunoCam project has two other key features. First, the JunoCam team is asking amateur astronomers to post telescopic images of Jupiter and other data that is gathered from Earth. Those uploads are then used to help Juno team members plan what JunoCam will image during upcoming flybys of Jupiter. Some of the images that have been processed are using that data already: Some of the user-submitted image show how the features that are seen in the JunoCam image correlate with the features that are seen in images of Jupitertaken by previous space or ground-based instruments.
"That allows us to connect what we're seeing from our different perspective to the historical record of the dynamics of Jupiter's atmosphere," Hansen said.
The final task that the JunoCam project will pose to the public is voting on which features will be imaged during future flybys. JunoCam can't take pictures continuously while Juno is making its close flyby of Jupiter, so the organizers have to be selective. Hansen said there will be a "partial vote" for what JunoCam should focus on during its next close approach on Dec. 11. Full voting will take place for the following close approach, scheduled to take place on Feb. 2.
"We took a real leap of faith with this experiment with the public — that people would actually think this is cool and participate," Hanse said. "And I'm really so pleased with the response that we've gotten. I really feel like our leap of faith was justified."

Another step towards global UFO disclosure. The Spanish Ministry of Defense has declassified 80 reports of alleged UFO sightings that took place between 1962 and 1995.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense has declassified 80 confidential reports containing around 1,900 pages of alleged UFO sightings that were recorded above Spanish airspace between 1962 and 1995.
The material is available to the public in the online library of the Spanish Ministry of Defense. The reports include the location of the sighting, the date, the summary of facts, considerations, conclusions and the proposed classification or declassification of each document.
The declassification process of the documents began in 1991 when the Ministry of Defense decided to analyze the reports and reduce their classification level in order to make them available to the general public which demanded access to these documents.
Fascinating accounts – inexplicable phenomena
One of the most interesting UFO sightings was reported by pilots and crew when President Adolfo Suarez was traveling from Germany to Spain.
The strange UFO was spotted at an undisclosed location. The encounter occurred when former President Adolfo Suarez, was on board an aircraft of the Spanish Air Force. The pilots and passengers onboard witnessed strange lights that could be explained. It remains unclear as to where the sighting took place. The report reads:“During night hours on February 25, 1980, onboard the 401st Squadron aircraft on a flight from Germany to Spain, Madrid with President Suarez, strange lights were observed by the pilots and passengers“.
Furthermore, the declassified documents reveal a number of different sightings that occurred over Spain when UFO’s were detected by radar but were invisible for pilots who were sent out to intercept them.
A document which dates to the 28th of November 1979 indicates that numerous individuals observed two UFOs in Madrid. A military plane was sent out to search for the UFOs. The pilot of the intercepting aircraft didn’t see anything, even though “the weather conditions were excellent” and “radar contact had been established four times” the report reads.
That same report details other sightings, one of them occurred on November 27, 1979, when “lights in the sky, were observed by many people” and “unknown echoes” were recorded.
Furthermore, the report details how in 1971, a “luminous object was spotted following a T-33 in Talavera-Getafe route”; and in 1977, mystery lights were seen above Madrid.”
The first UFO sighting over Madrid was recorded on December 11 of 1968. Two witnesses reported at 20.05 hours and 20.30 hours the presence “of a very bright object with changes in brightness,“ in the southwestern parts of the capital.
