Do You Belong to an Extraterrestrial Lineage?
Do You Belong to an Extraterrestrial Lineage?
According to Sitchin’s interpretation of Mesopotamian iconography and symbolism, outlined in his 1976 book The 12th Planet and its sequels, there is an undiscovered planet beyond Neptune that follows a long, elliptical orbit, reaching the inner solar system roughly every 3,600 years. This planet is called Nibiru (although Jupiter was the planet associated with the god Marduk in Babylonian cosmology).According to Sitchin, Nibiru (whose name was replaced with MARDUK in original legends by the Babylonian ruler of the same name in an attempt to co-opt the creation for himself, leading to some confusion among readers) collided catastrophically with Tiamat (a goddess in the Babylonian creation myth the Enûma Eliš), which he considers to be another planet once located between Mars and Jupiter. This collision supposedly formed the planet Earth, the asteroid belt, and the comets. Sitchin states that when struck by one of planet Nibiru’s moons, Tiamat split in two, and then on a second pass Nibiru itself struck the broken fragments and one half of Tiamat became the asteroid belt. The second half, struck again by one of Nibiru’s moons, was pushed into a new orbit and became today’s planet Earth.
According to Sitchin, Nibiru (called “the twelfth planet” because, Sitchin claimed, the Sumerians’ gods-given conception of the Solar System counted all eight planets, plus Pluto, the Sun and the Moon) was the home of a technologically advanced human-like extraterrestrial race called the Anunnaki in Sumerian myth, who Sitchin states are called the Nephilim in Genesis. He wrote that they evolved after Nibiru entered the solar system and first arrived on Earth probably 450,000 years ago, looking for minerals, especially gold, which they found and mined in Africa. Sitchin states that these “gods” were the rank-and-file workers of the colonial expedition to Earth from planet Nibiru.
There is a lot of confusion about the origin of the word Nephilim and what it means. In Hebrew it literally means to fall. As in fallen angel. The Bible, the Talmud and the Koran (where they are referred to as Djinn) all speak of fallen angels.
In the Book of Genesis in the Bible it relates how the Nephilim produced children with humans. One was even depicted as killing Japheth, Noah’s son, and taking his place whereupon he fathered many children with Japheth’s unsuspecting wife which eventually populated much of Northern Europe.
In the following video, journey into the world of Fallen Angels, Satan, Shadow People, Aliens, Demons, Anunnaki, Archons, Ancient Giants, “Ancient Aliens” & Genetic Hybrids. Almost all of what we know about the Nephilim comes from the Holy Bible in Genesis Chapter 6. If you’ve studies or looked into the Nephilim at all, or even if you haven’t, I’m sure you’ll find the video below refreshingly different than many other videos on the topic. I certainly did, and I’ve seen a ton.

Pennsylvania UFO reporting moving out of funnel cloud
Pennsylvania UFO reporting moving out of funnel cloud
A Pennsylvania witness at Elverson reported watching a “metallic craft” moving out of a cloud formation that quickly split into two where each object then moved away in opposite directions, according to testimony in Case 81049 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness had just let his dog outside at 7 a.m. on December 19, 2016, from a front porch facing north.
“I was sitting on porch and I heard this ‘jet sound,’ just like the gas burner of a hot air balloon,” the witness stated.“ And I looked left, to the west and I saw this silver-gray, circular object come down from this group of clouds. There were no other clouds around, nothing but blue sky, except for this cluster.”
The witness immediately stopped and turned to look at the event.

“It stopped and the aircraft split; and one headed due west and the other went due east towards me. I saw the metallic reflection of the craft that came towards me, because the sun was coming up. After 1-2 seconds, both craft disappeared into thin air, only leaving its exhaust or ‘trail.’”
The witness then ran into his house to get a phone to take pictures of what was left.
“At that point, the cloud cluster and trails were directly north of me and moving east. As I studied enlargement on my computer screen, I can see a circular, semi-white cloud ‘burst’ amidst the gray cluster above, almost like the burst pushed the clouds out into a circle and the object came down out of the clouds before it separated intotwo.”

The sighting frightened the witness.
“Scariest thing I’ve ever seen. I just couldn’t believe my eyes. I see all kinds of weird things out here where I live, but can never get photos in time. But this morning, I got it; well, the latter part of it, anyway.”
Elverson is a borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, population 1,225. Pennsylvania MUFON State Section Director Julia Weiss investigated this case and closed it as an Unknown.
Witness image 4.

“The sighting is unknown because it came out of a funnel cloud and then split into two objects, leaving vapor trails,” Weiss stated in her report.“The round object and sounds is not consistent with military jets and-or anything I can think of. The actual funnel cloud disappearing right after the objects split in both directions is also quite puzzling. The cloud, if itself a vapor trail, would remain. I am deeming this sighting unknown.”
Please remember that most UFO sightings can be explained as something natural or man-made. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.

This magnificent UFO footage was recorded both in infrared and normal video. Infrared cameras are awesome. They let us see a spectrum of light that our eyes are not capable of seeing. All UFO can be seen with an infrared camera, regardless if they are cloaked or not. The IR sees right through the shield, just like IR can see through black ink spilled on a book and still allow us to read every letter below the black ink. IR is famous for cutting through the clouds, for cutting through even dark water and seeing whats below. It is the ultimate tool of UFO researchers, from which, there is no escape for the UFO. Eyewitness states:
In the same way that stars are masked by the sky scattering of visible light in daylight many small objects in the atmosphere are also masked. This masking effect is lower in the infrared portion of the spectrum and even lower in the short radio wave portion, so scanning the sky in the infrared or in the short radio wave(radar) portion of the spectrum is a lot more effective than scanning the sky in visible light. From video footage the "best" that we can show is the anomalous character of a given manifestation, to get clear ideas of the nature or origen of Anomalies further comprehensive research is needed that video alone can't provide. But Anomalies manifestations are a "local" phenomena and local phenomena usually have local explanations or causes. Some anomalies respond with bright flashes to direct light signals in daylight or at night showing with that clearly their anomalous nature. Key steps for systematically observing anomalies:
1- Infrared spotting. Using an optical magnification in the 20x range. 2- The use of very high optical magnification able to resolve distant object details, in the 150x optical magnification range. 3- Direct signaling to the anomalies spotted. Anomalies will change behaviour and body geometry in response to "smart" signals.

UFO Seen By Kid At Park Moves At High Speed, Dec 29, 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News.
Date of sighting: Dec 29, 2016 Location of sighting: Unknown This video was recorded by ACTA of youtube. Watch as these kids both record an unidentified flying object in the clouds above. The excitement in their voices clearly show their intrigue at the unusual craft that they were trying to watch. At one point the boy with the earphones says, "did you see that? It grew smaller really fast!" That happened because the UFO flew away from the boys at a high rate of speed then stopped at a certain point. Cool video of young UFO researchers on the hunt in their neighbourhood. Its very possible this was an alien craft, but it is impossible to determine for sure without a more focused and close up video of the object. So, until we know more, the object in the sky is truly and unidentified flying object...a UFO. Scott C. Waring
The explosive death of a star — that may have been up to a dozen times the sun's mass — might have triggered the formation of the solar system, a new study finds.
The sun as well as the rest of the solar system was born from a cloud of gas and dust about 4.6 billion years ago. According to previous research, some event disturbed this cloud, prompting a gravitational collapse that formed the sun and a surrounding disk of matter, where the planets were born.
By searching for telltale patterns that have been left in matter from the dawn of the solar system, Yong-Zhong Qian, co-author of the new study and an astrophysicist at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and his colleagues now suggest that the explosive death of a small star could have kicked off that collapse. [Our Solar System: A Photo Tour of the Planets]
Prior work has suggested that a supernova's shock wave might have packed enough energy to compress the preexisting cloud of dust. And researchers have searched for evidence of that blast: Supernovas generate telltale patterns of unstable, short-lived radioactive isotopes. The discovery of the signatures of such anomalies in ancient rocks would help confirm the idea that a supernova triggered the solar system's formation. (The isotopes of an element have different numbers of neutrons. A different number at the end of the isotope's name identifies each variety: for example, beryllium-9 or beryllium-10.) Until now, researchers have failed to find the fingerprints of these isotopic anomalies in ancient meteorites that were left over from the birth of the solar system. However, researchers had been examining supernovas from relatively high-mass stars — those that are 15 or more times the sun's mass, Qian told Space.com. Qian's group chose to model lower-mass supernovas instead, from stars that are 12 times the sun's mass or less, and they investigated what isotopes would be formed from those explosions. They focused on the production of beryllium-10, an isotope that is commonly found in meteorites. Its prevalence in meteorites was already a mystery for researchers, Qian said. One theory held that high-energy cosmic rays could have stripped away protons or neutrons from atomic nuclei to create the beryllium-10 — a process called spallation.
Using new supernova models, Qian and his colleagues found that a low-mass supernova could generate vast amounts of ghostly particles known as neutrinos, whose influence on atomic nuclei could have created beryllium-10 — which would explain the high levels of that isotope in the meteorite record.
Moreover, the researchers said that the influence of a low-mass supernova might also explain the presence of other short-lived isotopes that are also found in meteorites, such as calcium-41 and palladium-107. "A low-mass supernova can explain the wide range of data that we have," Qian told Space.com.
Qian noted that the study group's findings do not explain the presence of all short-lived isotopes that are found in meteorites. "We think that some of these other short-lived nuclei might have been contributed by other mechanisms," Qian said. "I don't think that should be taken as a weakness of our model — it's just that our model cannot explain everything. Our work is a major piece of the puzzle about the solar system's formation, but there are other pieces of the puzzle that should be looked at as well."
Future research can also investigate what effects a shock wave from a low-mass supernova might have had on the cloud that became the solar system, Qian said. The scientists detailed their findings online Nov. 22 in the journal Nature Communications.
China's Lofty Space Ambitions Include 2018 Landing on Moon's Far Side
China's Lofty Space Ambitions Include 2018 Landing on Moon's Far Side
By Leonard David, Space.com's Space Insider Columnist
China's Information Office of the State Council on Tuesday (Dec. 27) released an expansive white paper on that country's space activities in 2016. The document also projected a look at China's space agenda over the coming years, a plan that includes a lunar sample-return mission and the first soft-landing on the far side of the moon in 2018.
In an associated press conference marking the release of the white paper, vice administrator of the China National Space Administration, Wu Yanhua, stated that China plans to develop a new generation of heavy-lift carrier rocket, the "Changzheng-9" or "Long March-9." That booster is intended for future manned lunar landing and deep space exploration missions, according to a report by the website Crienglish.com.
"There is an old saying in aerospace industry, 'If you want to develop space industry, you need to work on space rockets first; and if you want to develop space rockets, you need to work on its engines first,;" Wu said in the press conference. "So now we need to make progress in the heavy-lift carrier rocket's engine first, to create conditions for the whole project. It is planned that the heavy-lift carrier rocket's maiden flight will be held around 2030." [China in Space: A Video Look Back]
China's 5-year space plan
The wide-ranging white paper lays out the purpose of China's space program as well as its vision and principles of development. It also includes a summary of China's major developments in space since 2011, and the major tasks ahead for the next five years.
The document also includes policies and measures for development and the role of international exchanges and cooperation.
In terms of deep-space exploration, the white paper explains that China will continue its lunar exploration project, and strive to attain the automated extraterrestrial sampling and returning technology by space explorers.
Three strategic steps
"We plan to fulfill the three strategic steps of 'orbiting, landing and returning' for the lunar exploration project by launching the Chang'e-5 lunar probe by the end of 2017 and realizing regional soft landing, sampling and return. We will launch the Chang'e-4 lunar probe around 2018 to achieve humanity's first soft-landing on the far side of the moon, and conduct an in-situ and rover detection and relay communications misison from the Earth-moon L2 point."
Also noted is that through China's lunar exploration project, topographic and geological surveys will be implemented and laboratory research conducted on lunar samples; geological survey and research as well as low-frequency radio astronomy observation and research will be carried out targeting the landing area on the far side of the moon for a better understanding of the formation and evolution of the moon.
Next lunar probe
At the press conference hosted by the State Council Information Office, Wu also detailed work underway on Chang'e-5, targeted for liftoff at the end of 2017.
"We will take samples from the surface of the moon as well as different depths of the moon rocks after drilling, and the samples will be used by scientists for scientific research," Wu said.
Wu added that work related to Chang'e-5 is going smoothly.
Mars and beyond
Explained in the white paper is that China intends to execute its first Mars exploration operation, and grasp key technologies for orbiting, landing and roving exploration.
China plans to launch this Mars probe by 2020 to carry out orbiting and roving exploration.
"It will conduct further studies and key technological research on the bringing back of samples from Mars, asteroid exploration, exploration of the Jupiter system and planet fly-by exploration. When conditions allow, related projects will be implemented to conduct research into major scientific questions such as the origin and evolution of the solar system, and search for extraterrestrial life," the paper explains.
Raising human spaceflight capacity
In the category of human spaceflight, the white paper notes that China plans to launch the Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft to dock with the now Earth-orbiting Tiangong-2 space laboratory, "and research and master key technologies for cargo transport and replenishment to accumulate experience in building and operating a space station."
"We strive to acquire key technologies and conduct experiments on such technologies," the paper continues, "to raise our manned spaceflight capacity, laying a foundation for exploring and developing cislunar space." [China's Tiangong-2 Space Lab in Pictures]
In June 2016, China's new Wenchang launch center on Hainan Island celebrated its first launch. Renovations have also been accomplished in the Jiuquan, Taiyuan and Xichang launch sites, "forming a launch site network covering both coastal and inland areas, high and low altitudes, and various trajectories to satisfy the launch needs of manned spaceships, space laboratory core modules, deep space probes and all kinds of satellites," the document explains. "The integrated capacities and functions of space launch sites will be enhanced and exploited to meet various needs."
Historical starting line
The white paper concludes by noting that the country is "standing at a new historical starting line," with China "determined to quicken the pace of developing its space industry, and actively carry out international space exchanges and cooperation."
Since 2011 China has signed 43 space cooperation agreements or memoranda of understanding with 29 countries, space agencies and international organizations.

Proxima Centauri's Origins Could Mean Its Exoplanet Really Is Habitable
Proxima Centauri's Origins Could Mean Its Exoplanet Really Is Habitable
By Ian O'Neill, Seeker
After decades of uncertainty, it seems that astronomers may have found the strongest evidence yet that Proxima Centauri is indeed "gravitationally bound" to Alpha Centauri. This is interesting for many reasons, primarily because now we're pretty sure the Alpha Centauri system is a triple-star system, with two stars (Alpha Centauri A and B) orbiting closely and one oddball sibling (Proxima Centauri) with an extremely wide orbit.
But with the recent discovery of a small rocky exoplanet in orbit around Proxima, this new finding will boost hopes that this little world may be habitable for life as we know it.
Proxima Centauri is located around 4.25 light-years away making it the nearest star to Earth beyond our sun. The star's planet, called Proxima b, is approximately the same mass as Earth and orbits within the star's "habitable zone" — the region surrounding a star that's neither too hot or too cold for liquid water to exist on a planetary surface. Finding any planet within a star's habitable zone — regardless of the star's size or luminosity — will always be exciting as, if there is liquid water there, life could be possible. And discovering a (potentially) habitable world on our galactic doorstep is an incredible stroke of luck.
Though we know that Proxima b is there, we can only guess at its composition and have no clue whether or not it possesses any water. But new evidence suggesting Proxima Centauri is indeed a distant sibling of the Alpha Centauri could help us find out.
Proxima Centauri was only discovered a century ago and, since then, astronomers have been trying to understand its motion in the sky, a task that becomes very complicated when considering how dim it is. Red dwarfs are many times smaller and produce only a fraction of the light of our sun. But using the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) instrument at the ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile, astronomers have, for the first time, gained precision measurements of the dim star's radial velocity, a key metric if we are to understand if it is in any way related to Alpha Centauri.
The HARPS instrument is extremely sensitive to the wobble of stars as small exoplanets orbit around them, gravitationally tugging at them. Indeed, it was the HARPS instrument that discovered the tiny wobble of Proxima Centauri, revealing the presence of Proxima b. But this time, HARPS was able to deduce the velocity at which the tiny star is moving away from us and compared it with the radial velocity of Alpha Centauri. Both radial velocities closely match, which means that, in all likelihood, Proxima Centauri has a wide orbit around Alpha Centauri. They are therefore, probably, gravitationally bound.
Though this is a significant find — indeed, the question of whether or not all three stars are in orbit around one another has been vexing astronomers since Proxima Centauri was first spotted — it could reveal an interesting tidbit about the nature of Proxima b itself.
If Proxima Centauri and Alpha Centauri are gravitationally bound, this gives us a clue that the group formed from the same star-forming nebula billions of years ago. They are all therefore the same age. Over time, the trio's orbits evolved and Proxima Centauri for some reason was thrown away from the Alpha Centauri binary. In research to be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, the researchers speculate that before Proxima Centauri was ejected and sent on the lonely orbit it's in today, a planet formed far from the star and then migrated to a lower orbit. As it occupied such a distant (and cold) orbit, it would have likely been an icy world and that ice could have been water. And now Proxima b is orbiting in a very habitable location for liquid water to exist on its surface, then perhaps — just perhaps — it possesses water to this day.
Though it's a bit of a reach to be making any assumptions about the water content of a planet we cannot directly see, it's interesting to think that Proxima b may have formed with an abundance of water ice and it's hard not to get excited for the artistic renderings of alien oceans under a red sun.
Mysterious, thin, wispy clouds hide under the hazy upper atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan.
NASA's Cassini spacecraft flew over Titan on June 7 and July 25 and captured strikingly different photos of the moon's high northern latitude using the probe's Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) and Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS). Only the VIMS (the bottom, color image) was able to peer through the moon's hazy atmosphere to capture an infrared view of the elusive clouds. The VIMS image shows widespread cloud cover during both flybys.
The different views captured by Cassini's two onboard imaging cameras raise the question of why clouds would be visible in some images but not others, according to a NASA image description. That's especially puzzling because the two images were taken fairly close together in time. [Gigantic Ice Cloud Spotted on Saturn Moon Titan (Photos)]
ISS consists of a wide-angle and a narrow-angle digital camera, which are sensitive to visible wavelengths of light and to some infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths. The monochrome image at the top was captured by ISS from a distance of about 398,000 miles (640,000 kilometers) and is almost cloud-free. However, the bottom image was captured from about 28,000 miles (45,000 km) by the VIMS at the longer, infrared wavelength, and bright clouds are visible in Titan's northern skies.
"Even though these views were taken at different wavelengths, researchers would expect at least a hint of the clouds to show up in the upper image," NASA officials said in a statement. "Thus, they have been trying to understand what's behind the difference."
Based on atmospheric models, scientists have predicted that clouds will become more common at high northern latitudes during summer on Titan. Since 2004, Cassini has documented alterations in weather patterns as seasons change on Titan. Images collected by Cassini will help track the onset of clouds in the north, where Titan's lakes and seas are located, NASA officials said.
"The answer to what could be causing the discrepancy [between the ISS and VIMS images] appears to lie with Titan's hazy atmosphere, which is much easier to see through at the longer infrared wavelengths that VIMS is sensitive to (up to 5 microns) than at the shorter, near-infrared wavelength used by ISS to image Titan's surface and lower atmosphere (0.94 microns)," NASA officials said in the statement.
Differences in illumination geometry or changes in the clouds themselves were ruled out, as the images taken by ISS and CIMS were made over the same 24-hour period.
"High, thin cirrus clouds that are optically thicker than the atmospheric haze at longer wavelengths, but optically thinner than the haze at the shorter wavelength of the ISS observations, could be detected by VIMS and simultaneously lost in the haze to ISS — similar to trying to see a thin cloud layer on a hazy day on Earth," NASA officials said. "This phenomenon has not been seen again since July 2016, but Cassini has several more opportunities to observe Titan over the last months of the mission in 2017, and scientists will be watching to see if and how the weather changes."
UFO disclosure advocates began 2016 in the same position as most years, fighting an uphill battle to get the government to disclose what it knows about UFO phenomena. By May, hopes were rising that complete UFO disclosure by 2017 could be a real possibility, as a candidate from a major political party, Hillary Clinton, was profiled about disclosure with the New York Times. At the end of the year, many are dismayed with the loss of what appeared to be a golden opportunity.
As noted here in the Inquisitr, the election of Donald Trump may well ensure UFO disclosure in the near future, whether or not that is his intent. And there are no guarantees Mrs. Clinton would have been able to disclose anything, as she added the proviso that she would only disclose anything not related to national security. But the brief return to the headlines is fading, so what hope is there for complete UFO disclosure soon?
Well, to classify the first option as hopeful wouldn’t work. That is because not many people hope for war, but war might be a certain way for UFO disclosure to occur. In spite of the certainty of mutually assured destruction, humans have not lost the stomach for violence. Would a world war spark contact with the UFOs and aliens?
In this scenario of complete UFO disclosure, an alien ship could arrive in a way that ensured that it was witnessed by masses. Whether they came as messengers of peace, or more likely as the exterminators to clean up the hornet’s nest, with human advances in communication the world would achieve disclosure, official or not. As frightening as this possibility may be, it may be on the agenda for 2017.
The second option for complete UFO disclosure is more whimsical, but certainly less dire than the first. 2017 is the 70th anniversary of both the Kenneth Arnold “flying saucer” sighting and the Roswell misunderstanding for which the evidence seems to get softer with each passing year. That will translate into plenty of media coverage, and a raised awareness about UFOs. What makes that a potential treasure for UFO researchers is that more people will be paying attention.
Perhaps that one “smoking gun” piece of evidence is sitting in someone’s attic. Maybe that person remembers how grandpa never will forget that time that he went to recover an acorn-shaped metal box UFO in Western Pennsylvania. Maybe that person goes rummaging through grandpa’s old stuff that was left up there after he passed and finds “the” picture of a UFO. Maybe a government spokesperson slips up answering questions about an old case and spills the details on something new and different. Crazier things have happened, and when the UFO anniversary events coverage begins, who knows what might happen?
The point is that any time UFO coverage goes to a national level, the UFO disclosure movement has the opportunity to educate the wider public. This is an opportunity to embrace the challenge to state the case for disclosure. Some may view it more as a commercial feeding frenzy, but what does that mean? So is the Super Bowl in American football, which also draws a billion or so viewers each year. How nice would it be to have an audience that big for just 30 minutes to explain why complete UFO disclosure matters?
Finally, one should never rule out the ever-present possibility of contact from sentient beings through programs like the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). One unmistakable radio telescope captured signal could completely set the UFO research world into a frenzy of excitement. Really, any type of contact along the frontiers of human scientific exploration would do the trick.
While any, or none of these scenarios could occur in 2017, the idea is that UFO disclosure advocates have no reason to be pessimistic. It would be closer to the truth to suggest that those people who really would like to see UFO disclosure happen should utilize the big anniversaries in the coming year to discuss how far UFO research has come, and what lies ahead to a wider audience. One never knows when a difference maker will be listening.
Either stars are strange, or there are 234 aliens trying to contact us
Either stars are strange, or there are 234 aliens trying to contact us
by Evan Gough, Universe Today
We all want there to be aliens. Green ones, pink ones, brown ones, Greys. Or maybe Vulcans, Klingons, even a being of pure energy. Any type will do.
That's why whenever a mysterious signal or energetic fluctuation arrives from somewhere in the cosmos and hits one of our many telescopes, headlines erupt across the media: "Have We Finally Detected An Alien Signal?" or "Have Astronomers Discovered An Alien Megastructure?" But science-minded people know that we're probably getting ahead of ourselves.
Skepticism still rules the day when it comes to these headlines, and the events that spawn them. That's the way it should be, because we've always found a more prosaic reason for whatever signal from space we're talking about. But, being skeptical is a balancing act; it doesn't mean being dismissive.
What we're talking about here is a new study from E.F. Borra and E. Trottier, two astronomers at Laval University in Canada. Their study, titled "Discovery of peculiar periodic spectral modulations in a small fraction of solar type stars" was just published at arXiv.org. ArXiv.org is a pre-print website, so the paper itself hasn't been peer reviewed yet. But it is generating interest.
The two astronomers used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and analyzed the spectra of 2.5 million stars. Of all those stars, they found 234 stars that are producing a puzzling signal. That's only a tiny percentage. And, they say, these signals "have exactly the shape of an ETI signal" that was predicted in a previous study by Borra.
Prediction is a key part of the scientific method. If you develop a theory, your theory looks better and better the more you can use it to correctly predict some future events based on it. Look how many times Einstein's predictions based on Relativity have been proven correct.
The 234 stars in Borra and Trottier's study aren't random. They're "overwhelmingly in the F2 to K1 spectral range" according to the abstract. That's significant because this is a small range centred around the spectrum of our own Sun. And our own Sun is the only one we know of that has an intelligent species living near it. If ours does, maybe others do too?
The authors acknowledge five potential causes of their findings: instrumental and data reduction effects, rotational transitions in molecules, the Fourier transform of spectral lines, rapid pulsations, and finally the ETI signal predicted by Borra (2012). They dismiss molecules or pulsations as causes, and they deem it highly unlikely that the signals are caused by the Fourier analysis itself. This leaves two possible sources for the detected signals. Either they're a result of the Sloan instrument itself and the data reduction, or they are in fact a signal from extra-terrestrial intelligences.
The detected signals are pulses of light separated by a constant time interval. These types of signals were predicted by Borra in his 2012 paper, and they are what he and Trottier set out to find in the Sloan data. It may be a bit of a red flag when scientist's find the very thing they predicted they would find. But Trottier and Borra are circumspect about their own results.
As the authors say in their paper, "Although unlikely, there is also a possibility that the signals are due to highly peculiar chemical compositions in a small fraction of galactic halo stars." It may be unlikely, but lots of discoveries seem unlikely at first. Maybe there is a tiny subset of stars with chemical peculiarities that make them act in thisway.
To sum it all up, the two astronomers have found a tiny number of stars, very similar to our own Sun, that seem to be the source of pulsed signals. These signals are the same as predicted if a technological society was using powerful lasers to communicate with distant stars.
We all want there to be aliens, and maybe the first sign of them will be pulsed light signals from stars like our own sun. But it's all still very preliminary, and as the authors acknowledge, "…at this stage, this hypothesis needs to be confirmed with further work."
That further work is already being planned by the Breakthrough Listen Initiative, a project that searches for intelligent life in the cosmos. They plan to use the Automated Planet Finder telescope at the Lick Observatory to further observe some of Borra's 234 stars.
The Breakthrough team don't seem that excited about Borra's findings. They've already poured cold water on it, trotting out the old axiom that "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" in a statement on Borra's paper. They also give Borra's findings a score of 0 to 1 on the Rio Scale. The Rio Scale is something used by the international SETI community to rank detections of phenomena that could indicate advanced life beyond Earth. A rating of 0 to 1 means its insignificant.
An artist's concept of Europa's surface. On the moon's still-unknown terrain, a mobile lander could have trouble moving away from a contaminated site, scientists say.
Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
Searching for signs of life, or life's precursors, on the surface of Jupiter's moon Europa could spoil the hunt before it begins — which is why many scientists advocate going underground.
An ocean containing twice as much water as all of Earth's seas is thought to slosh beneath Europa's 10-to-15-mile-thick (15 to 25 kilometers) ice shell. For this reason, astrobiologists regard the 1,900-mile-wide (3,100 km) Jovian moon as one of the solar system's best bets to host extraterrestrial life.
Furthermore, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has spotted evidence of water-vapor plumes emanating from Europa's south polar region, suggesting that material from the ocean may fall back onto the moon's icy surface. [Europa May Harbor Simple Life-Forms (Video)]
That's an exciting prospect for NASA, which aims to put a lander on Europa in the 2020s to look for chemical evidence that the moon could support life. (NASA's Europa mission began as a flyby-only affair, but the U.S. Congress ordered the inclusion of a lander late last year.)
However, the very landing could complicate this search greatly. Firing thrusters to slow the spacecraft's descent "will be like hosing down the ground with ammonia, and this is a very inconvenient thing to do," said Ralph Lorenz, a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland.
It's inconvenient because ammonia contains nitrogen, he said. "Everything in our body has nitrogen," Lorenz told Space.com. −−"If you are interested in nitrogen as a prerequisite for life, then finding even traces of it at Europa is important, and so even a little thruster contamination matters a lot."
If such contamination were to occur, scientists would struggle to figure out if nitrogen detected at Europa was native or imported from Earth, he said.
In a study published in the journal Planetary and Space Science this past August, Lorenz found that putting a 440-lb. (200 kilograms) spacecraft down on Europa would disturb the surface out to 30 feet (9 meters) around the lander. He concluded this after studying images of past surface disturbances caused by spacecraft landings on Earth's moon and Mars.
Scientists cannot assume that the Europa lander will be able to move away from such a contaminated site. NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has wheels, so it drove away from its Red Planet landing site back in 2012. But scientists know little about the hazards on Europa's surface, Lorenz said.
"The distribution of rocks could cause a lander to tip over, or it could fall into a crevasse," Lorenz said. "In space exploration, it's not good enough to speculate that this will work. Why throw 1 [billion] or 2 billion [dollars] into it?"
The issue of nitrogen contamination on Europa is more problematic than it is on Mars or Earth's moon because the Jovian satellite is much colder than these other worlds, Lorenz said. At its warmest, temperatures on Europa don't rise above minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 160 degrees Celsius). Under such frigid conditions, ammonia is more likely to stick to Europa's surface, allowing it to interact with other molecules and perhaps make a mess of observations, Lorenz said.
Other researchers think that sampling Europa's surface is important, but that the best samples lie deeper. "We have to go down, beneath the surface," said Britney Schmidt, a planetary scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology who has worked on NASA's Europa lander mission concept.
This means drilling into Europa's ice. Schmidt thinks a mission needs to drill at least 4 inches (10 centimeters) down, to a place where the thrusters haven't contaminated the ice and space radiation hasn't destroyed biogenic molecules — the stuff− necessary for life's processes to take place.
"If we get 10 centimeters, or a meter [about 3 feet], down, this area hasn't been blasted with the thrusters," Schmidt told Space.com. "Maybe a portion, but the confidence for getting a pristine sample goes up the further you go down."
The Europa lander won't just be looking for ammonia or nitrogen, stressed Peter Willis, a chemist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
Still, he said, the Europa lander mission will take precautions; the lander will likely bore into the ice, Willis said. NASA also plans to employ the sky-crane landing method, which put Curiosity down on Mars, with the Europa craft, he added. −−After descending toward Europa, a hovering spacecraft will fire thrusters into the air to stay aloft while it uses a cord to lower the lander down to the surface. Then, it will let go. [How Curiosity's Sky Crane Landing Worked (Infographic)]
In such a case, "the spacecraft actually falls, but we hope not too far," Willis said.
Limiting the amount of Earthly organics being sprayed on Europa's surface will help NASA's quest to find extraterrestrial life —− even if what researchers are looking for doesn't walk or swim, Schmidt said.
"People want us to drill into Europa and find a fish," she said. "But right now, this is not realistic;− the hope is to land there and detect biogenic molecules, the molecules essential for life."
Have you heard about the candle maker who was swallowed up by the Earth in Hanley? The pub landlord who kept explosives in a bedroom? Or the dwarf who challenged a pit bull to a fist fight?
The Sentinel archives are chock full of fascinating facts that open a window to the past here in the Potteries. Here are 12 of the more surprising titbits of information, contained within.
In 1864 a loud blast shattered the still night of Longton and destroyed the Roebuck, one of the town's best frequented pubs. According to the Weekly Sentinel, the explosion was caused by landlord Henry Johnson's lax attitude to health and safety. In his day job he worked as a miner and kept a large stock of explosives in his bedroom, used for blasting coal. Mr Johnson's two children were asleep when the dynamite exploded, but luckily, were not seriously hurt.
In December, 1903, candle maker Thomas Holland was walking to his shop along St John Street, Hanley, when without any warning, a gaping hole appeared in the ground and swallowed him up. An old pit shaft had suddenly opened and poor Tommy was never seen again.

London journalist James Greenwood claimed to have witnessed a fight between a “dwarf", a four-and-a-half feet tall battler called Brummy and a pit bull called Physic, at Hanley in 1874. In lurid detail, Greenwood described the fight between man and dog, which lasted 11 rounds before the dwarf was declared the victor. Although the truth of the battle was never proven, three years later The Sentinel reported how a drunken miner from Burslem was jailed after starting a fight with a Newfoundland dog – possibly influenced by the notoriety of the "dwarf versus dog" fight.
In October, 1966, The Sentinel reported on a woman who was so scared of going to the dentist that she literally dropped dead of fright. Cause of death was a cerebral haemorrhage, but an inquest found the 46-year-old Sneyd Green woman died of, “fright from the thought of a dental extraction".
Royals have been visiting North Staffordshire for centuries – but perhaps the most bizarre stop-off came in June, 1987, when Prince Edward, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and the Duchess of Kent, Sarah Ferguson, all captained teams in It's A Royal Knockout, held at Alton Towers. At the end of the spectacle, where royals and celebrities competed in whacky games wearing oversized comedy outfits, Prince Edward asked an embarrassed press conference, “well, what did you think of it"? The awkward silence prompted him to storm out in anger.

In November, 1966, The Sentinel was raving about Port Vale's 16-year-old goalkeeper Michael Lawton, who pulled off a string of remarkable saves in 'near Siberian' conditions at Wigan. He was destined to find fame – but not in football. Lawton reinvented himself as comedian Mick Miller, instantly recognisable with his trademark bald head and long hair at the sides.
Garden gnomes were stolen from a garden in Uttoxeter, in November, 2002. Soon after a note, written with words cut from a newspaper, was pushed through their door. It said: “Mum, we have been taken by the gnome police. This is not a ransom letter but because you were nasty to us and left us in the cold, wet and rain, they want you to say you are sorry. We will be in touch."
In 1908, Joe Deakin – a grocer's son from Shelton – became the city's first Olympic hero, winning gold in the three-mile team event at the London Games. To celebrate, the British team were treated to a lavish lunch of steak and Champagne. Immediately after eating, Joe was due to compete in the five mile race. He failed to finish.

In March 1965, children's TV show Blue Peter appealed for a mystery boy from Stoke-on-Trent to come forward after he rescued his hamster from a washing machine. The boy was washing his jeans in a self-service laundry when he remembered his pet was in his pocket. He plunged his hands into the hot water, rescued the hamster and managed to revive him using massage – a feat worthy of a Blue Peter medal.
Cowboys and Indians came to Stoke-on-Trent in August, 1891, when the famed frontiersman Buffalo Bill brought his Wild West Show to North Staffordshire. Passers by witnessed the bizarre spectacle of cattle being driven along Station Road in Stoke, while the show itself spectacularly recreated events like Custer's Last Stand.

Jack Wilson, son of Pottery owner David Wilson, of David Wilson & Sons (formerly Neale & Co, based at the Church Works in Hanley), was one of the city's most notorious gang leaders. He was infamous notorious for playing mean tricks on citizens – such as convincing a grieving family a relation had returned from the grave – for using his pet monkey to terrorise passersby and leading the Rough Fleet Gang, Hanley's version of Peaky Blinders. His reign predated the Sentinel (Wilson died in the early 19th century) but his exploits were recounted in a series of character studies published in the 1870s.
Have aliens ever visited the Potteries? Among the more credible X-files in The Sentinel's archives are of a "bowl shaped object, square lights around it, red in colour", reported to the police above Stone in December, 1981; and a report filed by Staffordshire Police in February, 1985, of a large "mushroom shaped" object, with a "glowing orange colour", which was observed hovering over Bucknall for about an hour, before it headed off at speed towards Stoke. In 1967, paranormal investigators Anthony Pace and Roger Stanway investigated 80 UFO sightings in Stoke-on-Trent, which they collected in a book, UFOs Unidentified Undeniable.
Do you know of any strange and bizarre stories from Potteries past? Please send letters and pictures to Colette Warbrook, including your full name, address and telephone number, at The Way We Were, Sentinel House, Bethesda Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, ST1 3GN, or email waywewere@thesentinel.co.uk

Terrified musician says mysterious fiery UFO floated in the Devon sky for three hours before ‘flying directly at him’ after he snapped it
Bizarre object flew towards stunned onlookers before vanishing without a trace during daylight hours
EXCLUSIVE
BY PAUL HARPER
THIS spectacular UFO left onlookers baffled when it soared through the skies with a fiery tail and vanished without a trace in a Devon town.
A witness told how they thought the bizarre object was a comet until it began flying at lightning speed towards them before disappearing in Exmouth yesterday.
Mark Emmins said he first noticed a white object in the sky at 1pm which was still present when the “blood-red sunset set in”.
He was stunned when three hours later, and watching with neighbour Tyron Osborne, the object began moving as they tried to take a picture.
“My neighbour had asked ‘have you seen the comet?’,” said Mark, a local musician.
“All of sudden it began moving towards us coming from Dawlish towards Exmouth, which took about two minutes.
“It was leaving behind a trail and at the front of the object was a big bright light which went a dark colour as it neared.
“Then it just disappeared, vanished without a trace. There was absolutely nothing left behind.”

The most bizarre aspect, according to Mark, was that the “huge” UFO moved at the same time as six nearby white dots.
Mark, aged 53, said the sighting has left him “dumbfounded”, adding: “It definitely was not a plane because there was no trail afterwards.
“I have no idea what it was, we have been baffled.
“It wasn’t scary, but after seeing it move across the sky we were left thinking what on earth have we just seen? This was a ‘wow’.”
Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, said: “The basic problem is that if a UFO photograph is taken in daylight and looks close, clear and sharp, you suspect it is a fake, and if it is out-of-focus, distant and hard to define, then it can be a picture of anything in the sky – from a bird to a balloon.
“In this case the pictures seem consistent with the witness descriptions, and the length of the sighting suggests it wasn’t an aircraft or drone.”
Brazilian fisherman recently got the shock of their lives while on a twilight trawl of the ocean when they spotted the silhouette of a UFO on the horizon in footage seen below.

VIDEO: UFO spotted in skies over Sheffield city centre
Is this the moment a UFO was spotted in the skies over Sheffield city centre?
The clip, uploaded to video sharing website YouTube, shows a mysterious ball of white light rising slowly through the skies above the city just a couple days after Christmas.
The footage, which was filmed early in the morning of December 27, was shot by the University of Sheffield and shows the flickering, white globe slowly getting bigger as it rises through the atmosphere.
The video, entitled "UFO in Sheffield" begins with a caption which reads: "Real time recording of strange light in Sheffield sky."
The footage was shot at 7.18am from a fixed webcam which is used to monitor peregrines in their nestbox on top of the University's St George's Church lecture theatre in St George's Terrace.
In the film, one of the peregrines can be seen on its perch, oblivious to the light rising above the twinkling streetlights of the sleeping city.
What do you think? What are your explanations for the UFO?
Kerry visited the frozen continent last month, officially to highlight the effects of climate change, but conspiracy theorists bizarrely claim it was to examine “Nazi UFO bases.”
The madcap claim stems back to earlier conspiracy theories, one being that Adolf Hitler did not commit suicide in his Berlin bunker in May 1945, but escaped in a submarine to a secret base in Antarctica.
The other is astonishingly that the Nazis shared secret Antarctic UFO bases with reptilian alien species in the run up to WWII, where they experimented with flying saucer technology.
Now, after the Kerry visit, which conspiracy theorists suggest was to view these bases, it is being claimed that a Nazi UFO base is visible in images of the Antarctic taken by NASA.

Did Hitler really have a secret base for UFOs in Antarctica?
Conspiracists believe a number of the images – which have resurfaced online after being taken in 2006 – prove the German fascist party built massive bases for alien ships during World War II.
YouTube channel SecureTeam10 has claimed the 2006 images from the US space agency show a weird anomaly in the ice.
This area stretches around 150 miles, with scientists previously saying it is a crater from asteroid impact.
Tyler Glockner, who narrates the outlandish SecureTeam10 videos said in the new one: “To this day, scientists have no idea or way to discover exactly what is buried deep under this thick ice shelf.
"This continent has been shrouded in a mystery of its own for years now."
Nigel Watson, author of the UFOs: The Nazi Connection by Unexplained Rapid Reads, said: "The idea of alien or flying saucer bases in Antarctica is nothing new. In 1962, Albert Bender who ran the International Flying Saucer Bureau (IFSB) in Bridgeport, Connecticut, claimed that alien beings took him to their underground HQ in Antarctica.
"At the base, he saw beautiful female aliens and aliens in the form of men.
"The purpose of the base was to extract chemicals from seawater to send back to their home planet. They told him that if we attacked them they could detonate all of our atomic weapons.
"Such stories are used to support the idea that flying saucers are of Nazi origin and that they established an underground base at Antarctica after World War II.
"Sceptics think such stories are the product of malicious disinformation or fantasies, yet that doesn’t stop people continuing to believing in their existence."
The three glowing UFOs and some of the helicopters both snapped by the couple.
A couple told how they saw three unusual UFOs in the sky for 15 to 20 minutes while travelling to Albuquerque, in New Mexico, in the US.
They claimed the following morning that 15 unmarked black helicopters were seen flying towards the location of the earlier UFO sighting.
Alien conspiracy theorists claim unmarked black helicopters are often seen in the vicinity of UFO sightings.
The theory being that the choppers belong to the so-called “Men in Balck” - an alleged secretive government department whose staff try to hush up evidence of aliens visiting earth to avoid the public finding out.

Mystery UFO hovers over Brazilian rainforest as stunned fishermen scramble to capture stunning footage
The men, fishing from a boat in a river, captured the haunting images on a mobile phone just as the sun was coming up
BY MARC WALKER
A group of fishermen stare in amazement as a ' UFO ' hovers in midair above the rain forest before suddenly disappearing into the dense canopy of trees.
The men, fishing from a boat in a river, captured the haunting images on a mobile phone just as the sun was coming up.
"It lingers just above the vast vegetation for several seconds before dipping below the horizon.
In the footage, posted on YouTube, the shocked fellas discuss the jaw-dropping sight in Portuguese.
It comes after another bizarre object was spotted deep in the Amazon basin earlier this year.
The unidentified shape, believed by some to be an alien spaceship, also appeared to be using the trees as cover as it was only visible using satellite imagery.
This latest sighting echoes 1987 action horror film Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger , in which an extraterrestrial craft crash lands in the jungle, sparking a fight to the death with a group of special forces soldiers.
