This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Je kan ook hun site bekijken onder www.mufon.com. Ze geven een maandelijks tijdschrift uit, namelijk The MUFON UFO-Journal. Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

Glowing Object Falls From Sky Seen Over Several States, Feb 6, 2017, Video, UFO Sighting News.

Date of sighting: Feb 6, 2017
    Location of sighting: Wisconsin, USA
    News source:
    http://www.onenewspage.com/video/20170206/6794697/Possible-meteor-seen-in-WI.htm

This object was recorded over several states and news says it was headed straight for Lake Michigan which is a perfect hiding place for an underwater alien base. This could be a meteorite, but it also could be an alien craft trying to camouflage as a meteor so that eyewitnesses and cameras operators will dismiss it.

    Scott C. Waring

    Police transcript states:

((nate)) good morning i'm nate stewart ((brittany)) and i'm brittany falkers new this morning.. a large flash of light... possibly a meteor... was seen throughout much of the region overnight... ((nate)) local five's elsa robins is live in brown county with the details... good morning elsa. good morning - i've spoken with dispatchers in the region who say they received dozens of phone calls for this possible meteor around 1:30 this morning... and hundreds of other reports of sightings have been made to several social media pages. take a look at some of the video that was sent to us overnight from people across the state... we're told people saw a large flash of green light, and others heard what sounded like a large explosion. the american meteor society has confirmed the large flash was a "fireball" seen over both wisconsin and illinois. winnebago county dispatch says they received upwards of 40 phone calls... while outagamie, and sheboygan county says they each received about 10 phone calls. disaptchers from outagamie said they saw it themselves and said it looked like an airplane on fire... while dispatchers from manitowoc said they thought it was lightning. if you have any videos of the possible meteor, you can share those with us on our wfrv tv facebook page. stay with local five for details as they become available. live in brown county elsa robins, local 5 this morning. 10 Meter UFO On Legs Hauled In Trailer Across Missouri At Midnight, Feb 2017, Videos, UFO Sighting News

    Date of sighting: February 2017
Location of sighting: Central Missouri, USA
    Source 1: http://www.nuforc.org/webreports/132/S132436.html
    Source 2: https://www.youtube.com/user/unitedlove77/videos

There are two reports of this craft being hauled on a trailer. One of them also has a video, and says its probably headed to Area 51. As you can see, this is an all new video of a disk being carried by military personal with a police escort. The disk is huge, about 10 meters a gross and stands on three legs. These two reports back up each other and are proof it occurred.

Some people will ask, if its a UFO, why don't they fly it where they have got to go? Because if it was recently traded from aliens to humans, like in the past, it takes a lot of time to practice flying these things to get the hand of it. Also the USAF don't have UFO pilots just hanging around doing nothing. The last thing the USAF wants is a UFO crash in the middle of some city because a pilot thought he could handle it, but was wrong.

Also, if it wasn't a UFO, then why are they hiding it by transporting it at midnight?

    Scott C. Waring

    Report states:
    Occurred : 2/1/2017 22:15 (Entered as : 02/01/2017 22:00)

    Location: Fort Leonard Wood, MO
    Shape: Disk
Duration:1 minute driving north 15 miles north of fort leonard wood on I-44 north last night at exactly 10:15 pm. saw line of police cars spaced out about a mile with no traffic coming southbound. noticed more police cars with lights keeping traffic held back in the distance about another mile. a semi with flatbed was in the center. As the semi approached, i couldnt beleive that the semi was carrying what appeared to be a saucer shaped object. i passed within a hundred or so feet of the semi going in the opposite direction. the semi was moving at a moderate speed.. the area was somewhat illuminated and my 16 foot penske truck was elevated so i had a clear view. it was dull metallic grey, thick short legs coming from the center bottom like fence posts. thick central body and tapering to very thin edges. it encompassed the whole trailer. it was hanging over the edges. no cockpit or windows or markings, etc., wide central body. about 50 percent body and 50 percent winglike or sauce! r like edges. any other reports? large drone? Thanks

As you can see from the closeups, these are not jets. They are UFOs and one of them is making a trail behind it to disguise itself as a jet. The second one in following the first. Excellent capture that proves that UFOs wont to manipulate what you think you see.

    Scott C. Waring

    Eyewitness states:

I was reading on my deck around 7 o'clock. I am told that military pilots train in the mountains around where I live and I've always enjoyed seeing them fly through. This happens all the time, jets and helicopters are a common sighting. So I naturally saw the jet and did a double take, because there was something following it. I immediately thought I was witnessing some strange aircraft, possibly military but it was not a jet. I knew it wasn't a jet because it was actually right behind one. The jet it was chasing left a long contrail behind it, but the UFO did not. The UFO was gaining on a jet. No helicopter could do that. I was blown away and luckily got out my phone in time to take a video. I watched the object gaining on the jet for about 10 seconds when i lost them in the trees. I was very excited and anxious. I felt I has witnessed something very hard to dismiss as a "weather balloon" or some obvious type of aircraft. Shortly after the jet and object left my range of sight I saw 3 more jets and 1 helicopters going the same direction (in my opinion chasing the UFO). I also got another video of those other aircraft. I would like to show the video to an aviation expert and maybe get an explanation.

This meteor shaped UFO was caught following the space station today on live cam. What happened is I was watching and then the were switching cameras and went to the switching camera screen, and when they came back using a different camera, a UFO was right there in plain sight. The NASA guy operating the camera most have been watching it and accidentally allowed the live cam to get a good view of it. The UFO had perfectly matched its speed with the space station. I really wish they had not stopped showing it, but it switched to the changing camera screen again and then was gone.

    Date of event: Unknown
    Location of event: Area 51

Alien have a recorded history of studying humans for thousand maybe millions of years. To do this, few would be brave enough to volunteer, so alien have to do it the hard way...abduct the subjects. This way they can keep track of data and how things effect them over time. Most of the time a person in not abducted once, but many times over the lifetime of the individual. Often victims are implanted with a small piece of technology that tracks, monitors and even influences the person. Watch this fantastic 59 min video and believe me when I say, it will change your thought on abduction forever.

    Scott C. Waring

    Video states:

Chris Augustin from Aliens the truth explains his own UFO abductions and the mysterious implant in his leg. Chris shares his theory about aliens and abductions and tells of his experience at Area 51.

Biological Entity Moves Past NASA Sun Satellite On Feb 2017, Amazing Video Here, UFO Sighting Daily.

    Date of sighting: February 2017

    Location of sighting: Earths Sun

This UFO was found byParanormal Crucible of Youtube. It shows a UFO shooting across the sun, but may be very close to the SOHO image satellite, so it may only be about 100+ meters long. The object doesn't seem to move like a ship, but seems almost alive in its behavior. I have long believed that animals, intelligent or otherwise could be living in space like animals live in water. They may not be carbon base life forms, but its seems that the activity around the SOHO images and those of the space station would concur with my conclusion.

I altered the photo to show that it has a solid outside, not just a white glowing object, but it has a surface area.

Brilliant Fireball Streaks Over Milwaukee, Wows Skywatchers (Videos)

A brilliant, bright-green meteor blazed through the sky just north of Milwaukee early this morning (Feb. 6), and likely sprinkled space rocks into Lake Michigan.

The falling space rock likely burned up in the sky about 10 to 20 miles (16 to 32 kilometers) north of Milwaukee, or about 100 miles (160 km) north of Chicago, according to the American Meteorological Society (AMS). More than 220 people have filed reports with the AMS claiming to have seen the fireball at about 1:25 a.m. CST (2:25 a.m. EST/0725 GMT), according to the NASA Meteor Watch Facebook page.

Most of the eye-witness reports came from people in and around Chicago and Milwaukee, but reports have also come in from witnesses in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, New York, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ontario, according to the AMS website. At least a dozen videos of the fireball racing through the sky have appeared online or have been sent to the AMS, Mike Hankey, operations manager for AMS, told Space.com. [5 Amazing Fireballs Caught on Video]

One video of the fireball was captured by Jim Dexter of the Lisle Police Department in Lisle, Illinois. Dexter saw the bright flash moving through the sky, and quickly turned on the dashboard camera in his car to capture the event.

A very bright meteor blazed through the skies over Lake Michigan at around 1:25 a.m. local time on Feb. 6, 2017. The fireball's flight was captured by a camera on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"In this profession, we see so many things that the public doesn't" get to see, Dexter said in a written statement from the Lisle Police Department. "Sometimes that's good sometimes that's bad. I'm just glad that in this instance I was able to capture this for everyone to see."

Another video of the fireball streaking through the sky was captured by a camera on the roof of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences building. The various videos of the event reveal that the meteor was exceptionally bright, which means it qualifies as a "fireball."

"Cameras in the region indicate that the meteor originated 62 miles [100 lm] above West Bend, Wisconsin and moved northeast at about 38,000 miles per hour [61,155 km/h]," a post from the NASA Meteor Watch Facebook page states. The meteor appears to have broken up into smaller pieces "about 21 miles [34 km] above Lake Michigan, approximately 9 miles [14 km] east of the town of Newton," the post says.

The meteor also created a sonic boom, which occurs when an object moves faster than sound waves in Earth's atmosphere. Hankey said meteorites create a sonic boom only when they remain intact long enough to travel to relatively low altitudes, where Earth's atmosphere is sufficiently dense. Most fireball meteors do not create a sonic boom, Hankey said; they burn up or break up into small pieces before they reach those low altitudes.

The sonic boom created by this fireball was "recorded on an infrasound station in Manitoba [Canada], some 600 miles [965 km] away," according to the NASA Meteor Watch page, indicating that the explosive breakup of the meteor released at least the energy equivalent of 10 tons of TNT.  (Hankey noted that people who heard a noise as the meteor moved overhead could have been hearing the sonic boom or the explosion of the rock.)

All of this information has helped meteor scientists get a better understanding of what this falling space rock looked like before it hit the atmosphere. It was likely an asteroid fragment "weighing at least 600 pounds [272 kg] and 2 feet [0.6 meters] in diameter," according to the NASA Meteor Watch page. Hankey said he thinks that's a low estimate for the meteor's size.

Based on radar data, it is likely that bits of the meteor reached the ground (these are called meteorites), Hankey said. However, the space rocks would have been sprinkled over Lake Michigan, which means they can't be collected for study, he added.

A meteor large enough to leave meteorites on the ground typically flies over the U.S. about three or four times per year, Hankey said.

The meteor also might have been spotted via radar by the National Weather Service's Milwaukee office. The office tweeted a radar picture showing the possible location of the meteor over Lake Michigan at 1:31 a.m. CST (0731 GMT). Sarah Marquardt, a meteorologist at the Milwaukee office, told Space.com that the radar instruments likely identified the space rock as it broke up into very small pieces. The radar instruments are designed to detect primarily water droplets, but the radar showed that the object or objects in that area were not made of ice or water, she said.

Are light columns over city a sign something's about to happen at Large Hadron Collider?

STRANGE columns of light seen hanging above a city skyline could be a sign something awful is about to be started by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a conspiracy theorist has warned.

Video of the bizarre event over Busan in South Korea, is being shared on line, with the footage being jumped on by alien chasers with off-the-wall theories of what it could be.

According to local news reports, the lights were above the city for three consecutive nights and witnessed by hundreds of people.

Scott C Waring, editor of ufosightingsdaily.com has his views on the astonishing sight.

He blogged: "I am however worried... about it being caused by CERN. The last thing we want is a black hole to form that would eat the earth from inside out.

"This could be CERN messing around again."

The Large Hadron Collider, run by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) at Geneva on the French-Swiss border, is the world’s largest and most powerful machine and is used to collide particles at close to the speed of light in a bid to discover more about physics and the possibility of parallel universes.

The curious machine developed across a 16-mile ring of superconducting magnets has had critics before amid claims it could inadvertently create a black hole that may swallow up the world, and it at the centre of many unfounded conspiracy theories that this could be about to happen.

    Large-Hadron

    GETTY*CERN

The Large Hadron Collider could have caused lights in South Korea, claims a crazy conspiracy.

Some of the most extreme conspiracy theories even claim the LHC is being used by satanists to open a portal to bring the Devil back to Earth.

CERN, of course denies all such claims and says it could only create tony "quantum" black holes, which would be perfectly safe.

However, Mr Waring speculated over other, equally bizarre theories for the Busan phenomena, including the arrival of aliens.

He said: "Similar pillar lights have been seen all over the world for unknown reasons.

"Scientists try to explain it, but it seems few scientists can settle down on one theory and this amazing and beautiful phenomenon continues to go unexplained.

"Could they be caused by a fleet of UFOs? Or are they light beings, watching over an area together? Maybe, but it looks natural, like the Aurora Borealis.

The lights over Busan as seen in local TV news report.

I am however worried... about it being caused by CERN. The last thing we want is a black hole to form that would eat the earth from inside out.

    Scott C Waring

"Like it’s a cosmic connection between the Earth and the rest of the universe."

But another claim is much more mundane.

The Busan Regional Weather Bureau said the lights in the sky were caused by strong lighting on squid fishing boats in the sea at the time that were reflected by ice crystals within the clouds, creating the strange effect.

Eum Ki-cheol, of the weather bureau, said: "(The light) is reflecting on the cloud or something like that, from the side we see, the light is said to be a 'light pole' because it looks like a pole.

He said the phenomenon is sometimes seen on the east coast, where squid catches are frequent.

UFO hoax buster Scott Brando, of ufoofinterest.org, agreed with this explanation.

He provided an image from the footage which showed the columns directly above the fishing boat lights below.

He said: "Several boat lights being reflected off the bottom of the clouds were responsible for the appearance of these light columns."

EXCLUSIVE: I have PROVED an ALIEN UFO landed on earth, claims scientist

A CHEMIST claims to have proved an alien spacecraft landed on earth, after investigating a perplexing case for nearly 40 years.

    Delphos-UFO

    GETTY

Dr Erol faruk claims to have compelling evidence a UFO landed in Delphos, Kansas, 40 years ago.

Dr Erol Faruk has published the findings of his investigation into a substance left on the ground after a famous UFO sighting in a book which has concluded extraterrestrial activity is the only explanation.

In self-published work, The Compelling Scientific Evidence for UFOs, the British-born chemist of Turkish heritage, examined in detail the Delphos UFO case seen in Kansas, USA, on the evening of November 2 1971.

It is considered by some alien investigators as one of the most compelling UFO cases on record - due to the scorched ring left in the ground - allegedly when the UFO landed.

The witness was Ron Johnson, 16, who was tending sheep on his family's farm with dog Snowball, at about 7pm, when he spotted a six to eight feet diameter mushroom-shaped UFO appearing in the night sky.

It was described as having multi-coloured lights, and hovering about 75 feet away among trees at just a few feet above ground.

It then ascended with a blinding light.

He alerted his parents who saw it disappearing from view.

But, the family found a glowing ring on the ground where it had landed, and a similar material on trees nearby.

The family said the glow "felt strange, like a slick crust, as if the soil was crystallised," and Mrs Johnson was left with a numbing anaesthetic sensation on her hand after touching it.

    Delphos-Ring

    YouTube

A picture taken by the Johnsons of the 'glowing ring' ten minutes after the sighting.

Samples of soil, which was said to have a profound water repellant nature from within the ring were sent for analysis and stored in a number of laboratories.

Another witness also came forward, a Lester Ensbarger from Minneapolis, who advised Deputy Sheriff Leonard Simpson that at 7.30 pm the same night, he saw a bright light descending in the sky in Delphos.

According to website ufocasebook.com: "The experience of Ron Johnson is still considered as one of the best documented 'ground trace' UFO cases of the past century, and is still unexplainable by any conventional or earthly means."

Dr Faruk, who admits to a lifelong interest in the UFO phenomenon, focussed his work on investigating the chemical make up of the soil from the ring.

He was able to obtain some of the stored solid after requesting it while based at Nottingham University.

    Delphos-Ring

    YouTube

The ring left by the 'Delphos UFO' 42 months later.

The hovering object of presently unknown origin appears to have contained within its periphery an aqueous solution of an unstable compound whose likely sole function would be light emission.

    Dr Erol faruk

He wrote: "Placing water onto the affected soil was very like placing it onto a glass surface, with the water spontaneously forming into droplets sitting on the surface."

Although, he remained unable to fully identify the soil compound, he claimed to detect "a highly water-soluble organic compound which is potentially chemiluminescent”.

This could have been responsible for the alleged glow seen at the time, he said.

Dr Faruk concluded there were three possible explanations - a hoax, the ring was in fact a fairy ring - a natuarlly occurring ring of toadstools, or a genuine alien space ship had been seen.

He said a hoax was unlikely due to the unusual characteristics of the compound, and its elongation towards the wind direction on the night.

He also ruled out a fungal ring, claiming the "water-soluble alkali metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid" found in the compound would not be produced by a fungi.

This, he said meant the conclusion of a genuine UFO sighting was the most favourable.

He wrote: "A picture begins to emerge as to what possibly happened that evening.

    Ron-Johnson

    YouTube

Ron Johnson pictured with dog Snowball at the time.

"The hovering object of presently unknown origin appears to have contained within its periphery an aqueous solution of an unstable compound whose likely sole function would be light emission.

"Some of the solution was deposited into the ground while the object positioned itself under a tree (to possibly avoid observation from the air).

"Once enough of this solution was deposited, the object departed after which the Johnson family approached the ring area."

The book is based largely on a scientific research paper Dr Faruk wrote for publication in a number of scientific journals, but his publication was rejected.

Dr Faruk claims that although his report deals with "physical and chemical evidence" as required, he was told it was investigating an "inappropriate" subject matter.

A MYSTERIOUS GREEN COMET IS HEADING OUR WAY

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a green physically ancient comet will be visible as it passes 7.4 million miles from Earth. Comet 45P/ Honda-Pajdusakova, named after three astronomers, will be visible with binoculars or a small telescope between Thursday and Sunday.

The comet will travel through Ophiuchus, Corona Borealis, Bootes, Canes Venatici, Coma Berenices and finally Leo. The comet will appear bluish-green with a tail. 45P will pass 0.0831 AU (12.430.000KM; 7.720.000 miles from Earth on February 11th and could even be visible to the naked eye. The comet was last seen New Year's Eve as it began its path past the Northern Hemisphere and it will become visible again as it swings back past the sun. The comets maximum brightness will be at a magnitude of 6.

This is the eighth closest comet since 1950, and it is due it its extremely proximity to Earth that spectators will be able to see the comet. The comet was discovered in 1948 and has previously approached Earth in 2011, and it has also come very close to Jupiter which caused changes in the comet's orbit. Many believe that Comet 45P shows a coming year of chaos in 2017. Christian’s believe that the comet will split as it passes the Sun and that half of 45P will collide with Earth. The Bible directly warns about this approaching comet stating; 'And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves. Men's hearts will faint them for fear for looking after those things which are coming upon the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.'

Christian, Paul Begley warned “we have to take this seriously, ” He says that the Lord has directly warned him that this comet brings chaos and will be a bad start to a bad year. Others believe the comet is the second coming of Jesus. As this comet will be swinging back past the sun at a considerable force, it is possible that there could be a split in its core. According to NASA, the public has nothing to worry about. However, they also agree that they cannot guarantee there will be no variations from its forecasted path.

As meteor lights Midwestern skies, Lisle cop captures 'giant green-lighted orb' on dashcam

    Chicago Tribune

As a regular on the night shift, Lisle police Officer Jim Dexter is used to seeing the occasional shooting star or lunar eclipse, though mostly he's a witness to what he called “the odd behavior of animals and humans.”

But early Monday morning, Dexter was on routine patrol near Interstate 88 when he saw “a giant green-lighted orb” streaking across the sky. He made sure his dash camera had captured the fireball, then told other officers on patrol.

Soon after, the National Weather Service was tweeting his video of a meteor that lit up the skies across the Midwest around 1:30 a.m.

“It was too good not to share,” Dexter said. “I thought about how few people actually saw it, but then there’s the amount of people I got to share it with.”

The American Meteor Society, which monitors meteor showers, said it had received more than 380 reports of sightings Monday.

“The fireball was seen primarily from Illinois and Wisconsin, but witnesses from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, New York, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ontario (Canada) also reported the event,” the society said on its website.

The society said preliminary information from witness reports suggests the meteor ended its flight in Lake Michigan between the shores of Sheboygan, Wis. and Manitowoc, Wis.

The fireball seen Monday was similar in size and brightness to another observed in 2003 in Park Forest, where meteorite fragments fell onto south suburban homes, said Philipp Heck, the Robert A. Pritzker associate curator of meteoritics and polar studies at the Field Museum. In 2010, a smaller and dimmer fireball was visible from Chicago and landed near Mifflin, Wis., he said.

A meteor forms when a meteoroid — which is a fragment of an asteroid — enters Earth’s atmosphere after orbiting the sun. The atmosphere’s hot air helps the meteor evaporate, and what ends up on the ground or in the water — called a meteorite — is much smaller than what initially entered the atmosphere, Heck said. About 60,000 meteorites, which can be as small as pebbles, have been discovered on Earth, and some are on display at the Field Museum.

“It’s unusual that it was visible from a metropolitan area,” said Heck, adding that most fly over unpopulated areas or over oceans.

Although the National Weather Service’s office in Green Bay said the meteor was accompanied by a sonic boom that shook houses in the region, Heck said the meteor was not big enough to cause damage.

Weather radar, seismometers, video footage of the fireball and eyewitness reports will help determine how big the meteor was and how fast it traveled, according to Heck.

Officer Patrick Murphy of the Chillicothe Police Department near Peoria, was alone in his squad car in the middle of his patrol shift when he saw the green fireball as he was passing a traffic light. His dashcam, which is constantly recording, captured the meteor.

“It definitely caught me off guard a little bit. Obviously, I was not expecting to see that,” Murphy said. “I figured it was probably a meteor because I don’t know what else it could possibly be.”

He said he drove to the northeast part of town where it looked like the meteor had fallen, but there were no flames anywhere.

Murphy, who reported the meteor sighting to his sergeant, said the fireball surprised him. He said he has seen falling stars but “nothing this big, nothing even close to this big.”

Blazing green fireball in the sky caught on police dash cam

A bright green fireball lit up the US Midwest, generating plenty of eyewitness reports and dramatic camera footage.

Police car dash cameras are used to monitor situations when an officer pulls over a vehicle, but an officer in Illinois used one to capture an outstanding look at a massive green fireball cutting through the night sky early on Monday morning.

The American Meteor Society collected over 200 eyewitness reportsof the event from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Canada. The bulk of the reports came from Illinois and Wisconsin.

Witness Heidi B described the view: "Reminded me of   a northern light in color and vibrancy but acted like a meteor." Some reports mention a very loud booming sound. Drew N writes, "It was pretty huge. Reminded me of the asteroid that fell through the atmosphere in Russia that was all over the internet." That meteor event occurred in 2013 and created a damaging shock wave.

The dash-cam footage of the meteor comes from the Lisle Police Department. The video quality isn't great, but you can clearly see the streak of light entering from the top of the screen. It quickly expands into an impressive green explosion.

A camera located at the University of Wisconsin got a different view of the meteor. It comes into view at a sharp angle before lighting up the sky in blinding fashion.

The American Meteor Society estimates the meteor's trajectory likely took it into Lake Michigan. That means any possible debris from the landing would have ended up under the water.

Freehold - 5/28/16NJ has had more than 130 reported UFO sightings since Jan. 2016 (PHOTOS)

“Saw a large triangular craft and other small round craft in the sky. Likely not of this earth.”

“It was perfectly still, hovering right over a highway.”

“White ball of light flying very fast then disappeared.”

If there’s life beyond this world, they must love the Garden State.

More than 120 sightings of unidentified flying objects were reported in 2016 throughout New Jersey, according to the National UFO Reporting Center. In 2017, there’s been more reported UFO sightings than there have been weeks.

Many of them cite quick bursts of light, or “orbs” of different colors and sizes that lingered just long enough to be captured in a photo. But others specifically point to physical aircraft that look unlike anything they’ve seen before.

“When I was in the Air Force, we chased them regularly,” Medford resident George Filer, New Jersey State Director of the Mutual UFO Network, told New Jersey 101.5. “A lot of us in the military or intelligence agencies chased or saw UFOs and believe in their existence.”

According to Filer, most citizen reports are submitted during the warmer months when people are more likely to be outside. He said in the summer, an estimated 1,000 UFO sightings are reported per month nationally.

As director of Fringe New Jersey, which prides itself on examining “the strange & the unusual, the paranormal, and the impossible,” chemist Sean Wasylyk has no doubt in the existence of unidentified aerial phenomena.

He claims an overwhelming majority of UFO sightings are likely to amount to nothing, due to New Jersey’s extensive military presence and number of airports. But it’s the other 5 percent or so of reports that keeps him curious.

“I’d love to say none of these are real, but I think some of them have some legitimacy. I think there’s something real there,” said Wasylyk, a Hamilton resident. “It enriches lives knowing that there’s something we don’t know. Let’s figure it out.”

UFOs, though, don’t necessarily have to link to life on another planet, he said. Perhaps people are seeing the experimentation of secret military aircraft. Or some genius somewhere is showing off their private technology that no one yet knows about.

“If you’re an alien culture and you’re that advanced that you’ve gotten inter-dimensional or inter-planetary space travel, and you don’t want to be seen, you’re not going to be seen,” he added.

Both of Wasylyk’s parents were scientists; he was raised to believe anything unless science proved it wrong.

As of Friday afternoon, the National UFO Reporting Center listed six reports out of New Jersey in 2017. The most recent, out of Cinnaminson, cited a “chevron-shaped UFO hovering over trees.”

In all, the database lists 2,047 UFO sightings in New Jersey.

Fireball UFOs in New York State
    new-york-skies

Columnist Cheryl Costa crunches the numbers of fireball UFOs in New York state.

Fireball UFOs were first reported in the American Southwest in the years following World War II. Their first appearance was greatly troubling to the United States Army and Air Force for two reasons. First, the green fireballs could outrun any military aircraft we could put in the air. Second, the green fireballs were primarily seen loitering around nuclear research facilities like Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia Base (Later renamed the Sandia National Laboratory).

The situation was of so much concern from the defense establishment that the United States military launched a secret research effort in 1948 named “Project Twinkle” in an effort to investigate and research the green fireball phenomena. Project Twinkle ended in 1951.

From 1951-1990, fireball UFO reports averaged less than a dozen per year nationally. Then in the early 1990s, reports began to slowly head upward. Suddenly in 1998 the number of orange fireball UFO sightings dramatically increased to a few hundred per year and leveling for a little over 10 years. Again in 2010 there was another intense increase in orange fireball sighting reports. The chart below illustrates the scale of the fireball UFO trend from 1990-2016. Oddly, the number of fireball sightings has begun to drop off. If history is any indication, I expect the sightings to be between 300-600 sightings per year.

    fireball-1990-2016-nuforc

Nationally from 2001-2015, using both combined NUFORC and MUFON data, fireball UFOs are about 7.2 percent, or 11,066 sightings, of the total nationwide UFO sightings. Fireball UFO sightings rank sixth in UFO sighting shapes.

From 2001-2015, New York state had 430 fireball sightings, or 3.9 percent of the total national fireball sightings. Of New York state’s 5,141 UFO sightings for the same period, fireball UFOs were 8.9 percent of the total.

    ny-2001-2015-fireballs

New York state’s fireball UFO sighting reports also consistently tracks with the national trend.

For years UFO investigators weren’t sure what to make of the fireball reports. In many cases, they were content to write the fireballs off as drifting Chinese lanterns. Over the past decade, as the sighting reports began increasing in volume, investigators began to take fireball reports more seriously.

Typically they have a red-orange appearance. They are known to hover and to move at great speed. They’ve been seen at tree-top levels before whizzing off. Some of them simply wink out, only to reappear in another location moments later. Still, others have been known to simply dart around.

A few years ago in Auburn, an observer watched in awe as a fireball flew over his house at about 200 feet from the ground at high speed. He turned around astounded, only to witness two more following right behind the first fireball.

Last year, UFO researcher and author Thomas Conwell and I discussed fireball sightings that each of us had witnessed. One thing we both agreed on was the fact that the light emitted from the fireball had a digital quality to it. The fireball clearly had the pulse of a mechanism.

In lieu of looking at a few recent New York UFO reports, I offer an alternative. The National UFO Reporting Center has a website dedicated to fireball UFO reports. To view the website, click here.

If you are interested in joining a monthly UFO discussion group in the Onondaga County area, drop Cheryl an email Blogger@CherylCosta.com. If you have a UFO sighting to report, you can use either one of the two national database services: nuforc.org or mufon.com. Both services respect confidentiality.

Cheryl Costa would love to hear the when, where and what of your New York sighting. Email it to NYSkies@DragonLadyMedia.com. The names of witnesses will be omitted to protect their privacy.

The Night of the Shape Shifting Humanoids (Part 1)

    Sooner or later… it happens.

If you develop a passion for the UFO phenomenon for as long as I have, sooner or later you wake up to notice them saucers are not as sexy as they used to be. Aerial sightings, photos of disk-shaped or triangular objects, they all start to feel irrelevant. Even the landing cases, with their trace evidence on the ground, eventually lose their allure.

Perhaps UFOs, like any other dependency, cause the user to slowly grow a certain ‘resistance’, forcing you to ‘increase the dosage’ in order to get that thrilling buzz…

Thus, the seasoned saucer addict ends up getting his kicks from the hardcore stuff: The close encounters of the 3rd kind, in which witnesses end up in hair-raising, hand-trembling proximity with the enigmatic entities in (apparent) control of the phenomenon. And make no mistake, my fellow junkies! When it comes to this old Fortean fiend, the weirder and more nonsensical the case, the sah-weeter!

And so it is, my dear Coppertops, that I present to you a prime-time, vintage humanoid encounter so head-scratchingly bizarre, you’ll probably end up with a mean case of the munchies: The Conil case.

    The Location

The Spanish province of Cádiz, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia, has always had its fair share of exotic visitors. Its capital of the same name was originally founded by the Phoenicians, and was subsequently occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, until the latter were expelled by the Catholic kingdom of Castilla. Because of its enviable geographical position, Cádiz has always been a crossroads of civilizations, and its future will probably remain closely tied to the sea just as it has always been for thousands of years; although instead of Phoenician traders, Roman conquerors or Ottoman invaders, the local economy now depends on attracting tourists with dollars or euros to spend.

    The Light

Aerial view of ‘Playa de los Bateles’ at Conil de la Frontera. Cabo Roche can be seen in the distance.

Our story takes place in the coastal town of Conil de la Frontera –Conil for short– on the night of September 29th, 1989. Although to be precise, our story began weeks earlier, with 2 couples of local youngsters: Loli Bermúdez and Pedro Sánchez, Isabel Sánchez and Pedro González (relationship between the members is not entirely clear) who were taking a placid stroll along the ‘playa de los Bateles’ or ‘Bateles beach’ (“Batel” is a traditional local term for a small, oar-propelled boat). The age of the kids varied between 17 and 23 years old, and just when they were enjoying the cool breeze from the sea and each other’s company, at around 8:30 or 9:00 pm, they suddenly noticed something odd: A glowing, round, reddish-orange object, as big as the full moon, which appeared to be standing still, some 200 meters directly above the Roche cape, approximately 5 kilometers away from their viewing position.

The amazed group contemplated the ‘light’ for around half an hour, until it silently moved toward the horizon and was out of sight. Driven by curiosity, the young witnesses decided to return the next night at the same hour, equipped with a pair of 7×50 binoculars, to see if by any chance the object would return; sure enough, the ‘red moon’ was punctual to the meeting, and performed exactly the same as the night before. The binoculars allowed the adolescents to discern 4 white dots in a square formation at the center of the glowing circle, like the flamboyant button missing from a god’s jacket.

The ‘button‘ would emit a random flash from time to time, and then it was lost out of sight towards the western horizon, after completing it’s indecipherable ‘mission’. The same bizarre operation was repeated for 14 or 15 consecutive nights, always leaving around 9:30; the kids would always remain up until 10, in hope the light would make a second come-back; it never did.

    The Encounter

By that time, the witnesses’ families and others in their inner circle were aware of what the youngsters had been witnessing for a whole fortnight –whether they all gave credence to their testimony or not is clear. What we do know is that on the night of September 29th, a 5th member had joined the group of intrepid UFO hunters: Lázaro, the brother of Isabel, and the youngest member of the party.

As it was by now their routine, they all sat on the beach at 8:30, directly in front of the Los Corales bar. The sea was calm and the coast was practically empty, with no boat in sight (we’ll get back to this on part 2). Their approximate distance from their position to the bar was around 300 meters. And they waited.

They didn’t have to wait long. Aside from their old friend, the “red moon,” which had faithfully appeared in its accustomed position, for the first time the witnesses also saw a new development: What looked like a bright white ‘semicircle’ coming from the sea; with the help of their binoculars they could observe, at the center of it, a group of ‘red lights’ forming a sort of triangle. This new UFO silently flew past above their heads, moving toward the town, leaving the group amazed, and excitedly commenting the impressions of the event among themselves.

But then a third, blaring light appeared right over them, seemingly so high or bright they couldn’t discern any sort of shape. The witnesses noticed that when the UFO above them made three consecutive flashes, the red UFO at Roche cape would respond with two, and so on and so forth. A sort of ‘communication’ between these two objects seemed to be taking place, which lasted for around half an hour.

While they were fascinatingly observing this luminous ‘exchange’, something else caught the attention of our young witnesses: At around 9 pm, they noticed two strange figures standing by the beach’s shoreline; their presence raised the alarms of the UFO hunters, not only because of the literally ‘alien’ appearance of the entities –identical in appearance, almost 7 feet tall, covered with white flowing ‘cloaks’ whose ends reached all the way down to the water, and with round, featureless white heads with no hair– but because their arrival had not been detected by the youngsters; almost as if they had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Sketch of the ‘cloaked’ figures observed by the witnesses

One of the girls of the group, understandably unnerved by this observation, proposed to the rest of them to leave. Pedro González urged his companions to remain calm, suggesting the two ‘cloaked’ individuals could be some ‘pranksters’; perhaps two of their town neighbors had decided to play a joke on them by –rather lamely– dressing themselves as ‘ghosts’ with white sheets? The idea, however improbable –if nothing else because the tunics of the two beings were so bright they almost looked as if glowing– momentarily swayed the fears of the witnesses, who decided to stay.

But suddenly, the two entities started to move out of the water, towards them. Their gait was awkward and laborious, as if they were unable to bend their knees, and while they walked they kept their arms firmly on each side of their torso. Their long clothes covered their feet, as well as their hands.

The approaching figures finally managed to trigger the fight-or-flight response in all the members of the group. Panicked, they started to run away –in all honesty, could ANYONE blame them?

The group broke down their escape, though, once they realized the beings were not in pursuit of them. Instead, they had stopped and turned on their axis to face the sea, apparently looking in the direction of the ‘red moon’, which had faithfully remained on its fixed position the whole time. The group of witnesses miraculously controlled their nerves, and decided to remain observing the amazing sight from a cautionary distance (approximately some 30 meters or 100 feet away from the figures).

The unfolding of otherworldly events on this fateful night were far from over…

    The Transformation

While the two cloaked visitors kept their attention toward the glowing red object in the distance, the young UFO hunters observed something akin to a ‘shooting star’ on the night sky: a small, white-blue light the size of a tennis ball falling toward the beach, yet vanishing or ‘turning off’ just 2 feet or so before crashing over the heads of the entities. As if on cue by the disappearance of the orb, the two humanoids proceeded to seat on the beach, with their backs kept stiffly straight, while at the same time swiftly digging into the sand to build a sort of u-shaped wall surrounding them; once completed, they presently lied on their backs of this makeshift fortress.

In-situ reconstruction of the ‘trench’ built by the beings, in which they laid down

If the purpose of the sand ‘trench’ was to obstruct the sight of the humanoids from uninvited interlopers, it was only partially successful; let’s not forget our original witnesses were still at the scene and quite capable to observe the prostate figures, although with more difficulty. Pedro González was once again forced to calm the nerves of the more jitterish among them, while the rest kept passing on the binoculars to better watch the bizarre spectacle, which proceeded to yet another unexpected act.

Soon after the beings lied down on their backs, they proceeded to pass around them a bright, small sphere of a cyan-blue color –perhaps, we could speculate, the same orb which had fallen down moments before– although this time it seemed as small as a ping-pong ball in the eyes of our young witnesses, who observed this strange ‘ball game’ performed among the humanoids around a half-dozen times or so, until Pedro González –the one who had bravely convinced the rest of the friends to stick around– without any warning tossed the binoculars to the ground and started to flee the scene. The other Pedro (Sánchez) quickly intercepted him to know what was going on, and that’s when the terrified young man informed his friend he had observed a third figure at the scene, at the foot of the other two entities. This new humanoid was considerably taller (around ten foot, according to their testimony), clad on a dark, tight-fitting suit and displaying an enormous pear-shaped head. The two young men decided not to tell the rest about the ‘giant’ and returned to their friends, but when Pedro González took the binoculars, he could not longer find the enormous humanoid near the two others, who still remained lying on their backs and passing the little blue sphere back and forth between each other.

The strangest act in this alien stage play the young men and women had been observing, was about to commence.

Suddenly the little blue light disappeared, and a few seconds later the two beings got up from the sand. To the amazement of our witnesses, though, they no longer retained their original appearance: The white, cloaked figures had somehow changed into what looked like a human couple! The male was tall (around 7 feet, which was the original height of the white beings) had long blond hair and was wearing dark jeans and a checkered shirt; the woman was slightly shorter than the man, her hair was also long but dark in color, and wore a thin blouse and long skirt.

Without saying any word, they turned and started walking toward the town, one in front of the other, without even bothering to ever once look at the startled group of youngsters who had bore witness to their entire transformation; a transformation, it should be pointed out, that for some reason wasn’t 100% perfect: The witnesses later revealed to the researchers who went to Conil to investigate the case, that although the features of the ‘female changeling’ were very beautiful and perfectly ordinary, the forehead of his male companion on the other hand was abnormally prominent. How could someone looking like an extra in a cheesy sci-fi flick could go around unnoticed in a tourist town??

Exeter, the extraterrestrial leader in the B-movie This Island Earth (1955). Did the Conil male ‘infiltrator’ look like this?

    The Giant

Just when they were about to reach one of the Conil’s dark alleys, the witnesses’ attention was shifted once again toward the beach, where they could see above the water a small, white cloud coming from the coast toward them at great speed. When the compact ‘cloud’ reached the shore it stopped and rapidly evaporated, and at that moment is when Loli –who was using the binoculars– alerted her friends about the presence of a dark figure near the water. Pedro González snatched the field glasses out of the girl’s hand, and confirmed it was indeed the same enormous being he had seen before.

The black giant with the pear-shaped head stood motionless in front of the young, baffled witnesses, until it quickly moved rapidly away toward the west. As if this wasn’t already strange enough, the humanoid –according to the witnesses– wasn’t even ‘touching’ the ground! Rather, its feet hovered some 8 inches above the sand, and as it floated away its arms were kept firmly on each side of its torso.

The being’s departure elicited a strange response among the members of the UFO party: The oldest and the youngest in the group –Pedro G. and Lázaro– suddenly started to run in pursuit of the giant. Asked later why they reacted in such a way, they couldn’t give a proper explanation; their chase turned out fruitless though, since no matter how hard they ran, the giant moved (or ‘floated’) even faster. When the two were about 50 or 60 meters away from the being, they finally heeded the desperate shouts of their companions pleading them to stop, which they did.

Sketch of the black-suited ‘giant’ observed by the witnesses

It was at that moment when the giant also stopped moving and turned its head toward Pedro and Lázaro. Its black eyes, huge as hen eggs, robbed the two of whatever courage they still possessed, and even though the being’s attitude was not menacing, it somehow gave the impression to the young men that it was warning them not to follow any further. At last they returned to their frantic friends and let the giant lose itself in the night.

With the couple nowhere to be seen, and the giant gone –was its purpose just to deviate the witnesses’ attention and prevent them not to chase the other beings?– the incredible events of the night were apparently over… or so they seemed.

    The Aftermath

Graphic explaining the location of the sand trench in relation to the witnesses’ viewing position. It also shows the distance between the beach shore and the town

As the group of young men and women remained at the beach, excitedly commenting among themselves on what had just transpired at that humble location of the Cádiz province, they were able to witness one last unknown phenomenon around 10 pm: By the coast and heading from west to east, a small white light followed a silent, zigzagging trajectory, like a bouncing ball in one of those old sing-along children TV shows. A rather unimpressive finale, judging by the sort of spectacle preceding it.

Shortly after, an additional witness appeared on the beach and joined the group. Juan Bermúdez was an adult town resident –possibly related to Loli, one of the girls– correspondent for a local radio station as well as a painter; he had heard of his young neighbors’ nightly escapades at the Bateles beach, and as he had done on previous occasions decided to go there and see if anything interesting occurred –in a later interrogation with UFO investigator Bruno Cardeñosa, Bermúdez confessed he himself had actually had the chance to observe the giant humanoid on 3 previous separate occasions, during the first hour of dawn; if true, that would mean the Bateles beach had been the scene of extreme high strangeness even before the night of September 29th.

When the boys and girls told him what had happened, Bermúdez helped them investigate the area where the two cloaked humanoids had accomplished their incredible transformation. The group noticed the ‘trench’ the beings had built –which was approximately 2 meters wide by 1 meter long– showed discernible ‘scratch marks’ on the sand, as if it had been done by long and slender fingers.

Reconstruction of the footprints left by the couple, compared with the size of an ordinary foot

But was even more interesting were the ‘footprints’ the beings had left on the beach as they made their escape toward the town. They were enormous: 18 inches long and 6 inches in their widest part, with a very prominent arc as well as a huge toe impression that seemed to go deeper than the rest of the foot. Which raises the question: When the young witnesses saw the ‘transmogrified’ alien couple walk out of the beach, why didn’t they notice such abnormal feet?

Unless the image of the human couple wearing ordinary clothes was just an elaborate illusion, one that was nevertheless unable to conceal their actual imprints left in the sand? This might serve to explain why both set of footprints had exactly the same size, despite the fact the female walk-in was not as tall as her 7-foot companion.

Adding to the confusion was the fact the group also found many more footprints than they expected. Aside from the ones going from the ‘sand trench’ to the Conil, an action observed by the witnesses, 20 paces away from the trench there were imprints of the same size and characteristics, but going in several different directions and covering an area of approximately 10 feet in diameter. What’s confusing about this is the fact the 4 boys and girls NEVER observed the couple deviate from their straight line toward the town alley, so they couldn’t had the time to leave all those additional prints.

But if they didn’t do it, then who did?

The fantastic Conil encounter with what seemed to be shape-shifting humanoids took little time to garner attention from the local media. First through the radio station Juan Bermúdez worked for, and then via an article published by El Diario de Cádiz on October the 5th. On the second part on my retelling of this wonderful episode, we will explore what else transpired after debunkers attempted to shoot down the case. But far more interestingly, we will discover what happened after the enigmatic couple of alien infiltrators returned to the ‘scene of the crime’.

    To be continued…

The Night of the Shape Shifting Humanoids (Part 2)

Greetings, fellow Coppertops! We continue with the chronicling of the Conil close encounter, when a group of 5 local kids witnessed all sorts of otherworldly phenomena at a beach in the coast of Cádiz, which included red-glowing UFOs, orbs of light, a 10-foot-tall levitating giant, and (last but not least) two cloaked entities who transformed themselves into a human-looking couple right in front of them. So strap in, because the high strangeness surrounding this remarkable case is far from over!

    The Debunking

As we briefly mentioned by the end of part 1, it only took a few days until the incidents occurring on the night of September 29th, 1989 became a matter of public knowledge. After El Diario de Cádiz ran a story about the case on October 5th, members of the Spanish Group of UFO Investigations (GEIFO in the Spanish acronym), a skeptically-oriented organization, visited Conil de la Frontera to conduct a field research and interview the witnesses; they asked the same local newspaper to publish their findings, which it did on October 16th.

Cover of El Diario de Cádiz from October 16th, 1989, running the debunking explanation by the GEIFO group

The conclusion by GEIFO’s researchers? The whole episode had been nothing but a big misidentification caused by over-excited imagination. The red UFO observed by the group of local boys and girls for the past couple of weeks —“as big as the moon” according to their testimony– had actually been a British ship in charge of laying down underwater cable for the Telefónica phone company in that area, which was near the coast of Conil during the night in question according to their findings, and used ‘light signals’ to coordinate the work with ground personnel. The ‘aliens’, according to the skeptics, were two crew members of said vessel wearing scuba-diving equipment and covering themselves with blankets or towels, and the ‘white cloud’ they had observed coming down from the sea, was nothing but the wake left by a Zodiac boat they divers had used to reach the beach. Case closed, Scooby Doo!

“But wait!” you may be asking, “what about the trench the ‘divers’ dug out in the sand? What about the blue light they passed around each other while they were lying down on it? What about the TEN-FOOT-TALL GIANT which appeared after the couple walked to the town (leaving their ‘towels’ AND all their equipment behind?)?”

GEIFO’s answers to all these questions –and the way they left other questions unanswered– seem to be more incredible than the testimony of the witnesses itself: The trench was built by the divers because they wanted to ‘remove their gear in privacy’ –you know, instead of doing it much more easily onboard the British ship or the Zodiac?– or maybe because after a hard night’s work laying out cable, they wanted to spend a few hours under the Cádiz’s fair weather doing *ahem* ‘other things’ *wink wink*. The ‘orb’ they had on their hands was a mere torchlight, and the black-suited giant was another diver, possibly in charge to pilot the Zodiac boat (!)

So, in the eyes of the ‘scientifically-oriented’ investigators –the ones who think any sort of explanation, no matter how tenuous or downright improbable, is always better than entertaining the possibility of a truly anomalous event– the 5 Conil witnesses rather than being UFO hoaxers seeking publicity, were just a bunch of gullible idiots. I’ll leave you Coppertops to decide which is more insulting…

    The Counter-Debunking

Juan José Benítez: Reporter, UFO investigator, author and globetrotter

5 months after GEIFO’s report had ‘satisfactorily’ solved the case –and quite possibly subjected the 5 witnesses to all sorts of ridicule in the process– investigator Juan José Benítez visited Conil to make a research of his own. Benítez is one of the most famous UFO hunters in Spain and has been instrumental in coaxing his government to declassify a good number of cases which were investigated by the Spanish Air Force. He has also traveled thousands of miles all across the globe to conduct field investigations and interview hundreds of witnesses, most of them humble townsfolk living in remote villages, who had never shared their testimony outside their circle of friends and family. He is a bestselling author not only in his home country but in all of Latin America, and it was in 1990 when he described his involvement on the Conil case in his book La Quinta Columna.

Benítez’s approach to put GEIFO’s theory to the test was simple and straightforward: The skeptics’ main argument was that the UFO observed by the witnesses had been one of two British vessels laying down underwater cable –this despite the boys’ insistence that during the night in question there was NO ship or boat on sight.

Benítez did corroborate the existence of two oceanographic ships, the British Enterprise Two and the C.S. Monarch, which had been hired by a Spanish subcontractor to conduct work for the Telefónica phone company. According to GEIFO, the Monarch had been the one near the coast on the night of September 29th; yet their first mistake was in stating the ship was laying down the cable, whereas in fact they were conducting preliminary prospecting of the littoral.

It took some hard work, but in the end Benítez managed to uncover 3 important pieces of the puzzle:

    • When the Monarch started working in the area (September 18) its position was 60 miles away from the coast, which was too far to have been able to be spotted from the beach (not to mention the witnesses started to observe the red UFO on the night of September 14th).
    • On the night of September 29th the meteorological report indicated the weather conditions were inadequate for any medium-to-large ship to even approach the coast, due to the strong winds winds mixed with the low tide and the littoral currents.
    • But the coup’ de grace came when Benítez was able to contact captain, J. A. B. Simkins –Chairman and Chief Executive of BT Marine, the oceanographic fleet which owned the Monarch– who on July of 1990 wrote him a letter stating the approximate position of their vessel during the night in question (36º 23′ N, 06º 44′ W), placing it 30 miles away from the Bateles beach. Consider how during the best viewing conditions, the horizon line on the sea only extends 8 miles.

And if that is not enough, here’s a link to Benítez’s own web page describing the Conil case, where if you scroll down you can find a scanned copy of Simkins’ letter. In it one can read the final nail in GEIFO’s coffin:

[During our operation] (W)e would not have employed frogmen.”

    Check. And mate.

As an aside note, Benítez also managed to discover (according to an article written by Bruno Cardeñosa published by the magazine Año Cero in 1996) that around the time of the incidents two individuals bearing the characteristics of the ‘changeling’ couple were lodging on a small guest house in Conil around the days of the encounter; these ‘tourists’ registered themselves using the passports of German citizens who, supposedly, hadn’t abandoned their country in those days –unfortunately, La Quinta Columna doesn’t mention this detail, nor can further information be found in Benítez’s website.

But wait, there’s more! Benítez also uncovered another interesting part to this mystery: On the nights from Sept 27th to Sept 30th, the military radar station located in Algeciras (Cádiz) suffered an inexplicable malfunction, which rendered the whole Conil area ‘dark’ during the period in which the alleged UFO activity and close encounter took place. Coincidence, or did someone (or something) was trying to avoid detection?

Benítez’s detective job showed GEIFO’s main argument failed to convincingly explain the events that took place at Conil. But although it proved the UFO was not a British oceanographic ship, and the humanoids were not British scuba divers, it can’t unfortunately substantiate the testimony of the witnesses and what they claimed they saw.

Corroboration to their fantastic story did take place, though; albeit indirectly and in the typical inconclusive manner in which the phenomenon tends to conduct itself…

    The Return

How many UFO hunters, I wonder, feel as if they are doomed to always remain 2 steps behind their ‘prey’? Always trying to document cases, interview witnesses and collect whatever evidence remains AFTER the objects and their occupants take off or leave the area; but never having the chance, just for once, of actually be able to witness the high strangeness with their own eyes.

Well, for local UFO hunter Jesús Borrego López that was about to change when he decided to travel to Conil in search for more answers on October 15th. A police officer of 44 years old assigned to the Security and Control office of the Cádiz town hall, Borrego López easily managed to locate four of the witnesses (Loli, Isabel and the two Pedros) who politely accepted to answer his questions.

Once they finished talking at one of the witnesses’ home, the researcher asked them to accompany him to the Bateles beach, which they accepted even though it was already late at night. Once Borrego López was satisfied with his field survey, he invited the group of boys and girls to a local bar for a refreshment, where they remained lively discussing the incident.

It was around 10:35 pm when the group instantly fell silent, because they had all taken notice of a strange couple crossing in front of them toward the sea. Borrego López was the first to say “have you noticed the forehead of that man?”

The youngsters said nothing and kept looking at the odd individual and each other in total amazement. Borrego López insisted: “look at his height! He measures 2 meters tall, easily!”

The boys finally dared to open their mouth, confirming that was indeed the same ‘man’ and ‘woman’ they had observed leaving the Bateles beach after their ‘transformation’ inside the ‘sand trench’.

The male with the prominent cranium was walking 2 steps ahead of his female partner. Like the witnesses had described in their original testimony, he had long blond hair reaching up to his shoulders, and was wearing a denim attire which looked somewhat worn out and tightly fit. The woman was way above regular height (1.90 meters) and wore similar clothes as her less-conspicuous companion.

Borrego López and Pedro Sánchez quickly got up the table and left two of the witnesses behind, with the clear intention of intersecting the couple who were ahead of them by at least 150 meters.

“Visibility was perfect,” Borrego López reported later to Benítez, “despite the fact the streetlights at the marine promenade were turned off  (according to town hall’s regulations). But the night was very clear. There was a full moon and also low clouds reflecting the town’s illumination and lunar light over the sea.”

La Quinta Columna (The Fifth Column). The book where Benítez narrates (among many other encounter reports) the events surrounding the Conil case

Yet despite these optimal viewing conditions, and the fact the two UFO hunter and his young sidekick were keeping pace with the odd couple, the individuals suddenly vanished in front of Borrego López and Pedro’s very eyes. Bewildered, the two chasers looked in all directions, but their pursuants were nowhere to be found.

The unexpected disappearance raised goosebumps on both Pedro and the seasoned researcher, who had now become another witness of this incredible case. But the surprises were not over: When they both looked toward the east they noticed what looked like a ‘black dot’ the size of a soccer ball approaching rapidly from the sea shore.

Meanwhile the two other kids they had left at the bar joined them in time to observe the dark ‘ball’ which kept moving toward them at a preternatural speed. As it got nearer, the witnesses saw how its shape started to change; its trajectory became more erratic, at times looking as if it was floating above the ground, and at others as if it was being ‘yanked’ or ‘dragged’ by an invisible force.

The group continued to observe the mesmerizing vision, until they finally realized the incoming dark mass was actually a human figure; though its legs were moving so fast they were a mere blur.

When the ‘sprinter’ was just 60 meters away from the witnesses, it stopped. It was a woman! She was standing in front of the group very close to the water age, and without any warning she removed the upper portion of her clothes to reveal her female curves, and started walking toward the Roche cape, faraway in the west. And when she had put some distance between herself and the astonished group, these observed yet another figure who joined her and watched the two individuals lose themselves in the night.

According to their later calculations given the apparent size of the figure from their position, the strange female had managed to traverse a distance of 4 kilometers in around 45 seconds; something impossible to achieve even with a land vehicle. Not to mention the woman didn’t raise a tremendous wake of sand while racing through the beach, nor even make any discernible noise.

Had that been the same man and woman Borrego López and Pedro had tried to pursue? Or were they an additional element to this absurd stage play, intended to distract the witnesses the same way the ten-foot-tall giant had done on the night of September 29th, when it showed itself floating inches above the ground while the couple of changelings were making their move toward the anonymity of the Conil streets?

Whatever the case, the only thing Borrego López could do was analyze the footprints left by the (original) couple before they vanished. While the tracks made by the woman were very light and faintly discernible, the man’s were very profound; so much so that Borrego López estimated the individual had to weigh more than 100 kilograms. The size and shape were consistent with the ones found by the youngsters on the night of the 29th, not only in their unusual shape and monstrous size, but also due to the fact the researcher found tracks hinting how whomever made them, had been apparently making strange swirls as if going in circles –movements unobserved by neither Borrego López nor Pedro, the same way the original witnesses had watched the couple walk straight toward the town, yet they later found a great number of large footprints going in different directions.

After the ‘circles´, only one set of footprints was detectable… and it went straight into the water.

It was close to midnight when Borrego López confirmed there were no more tracks to be found in a 100-meter radius, and with that he was ready to call it a night. While he was advising his young acquaintances not to reveal to anyone what had transpired that night, Pedro suddenly yelled “here they come!”. Sure enough, the enigmatic couple was making yet another uncalled-for appearance right in front of the witnesses. One of the boys was (finally!) carrying a super-8 film camera and began recording the seemingly hurried movements of the couple as they passed by.

The man looked straight into Borrego López’s with cold, unfriendly eyes. His face was very pale. The woman on the other hand was stunningly beautiful, and she seemed to have somewhat oriental features, with her eyes slanted slightly at the edges and glimpsing at the gathering of witnesses with an expression of animosity or nervousness. The seasoned UFO hunter noticed both their clothes were completely dry, which ran counter to the evidence of the tracks heading into the sea.

The witnesses never dared to address the couple. They just kept staring at them until, for the second time, they reached the streets of Conil and were lost out of sight. They didn’t return that night, nor any other subsequent night.

When they revealed the Super-8 film, nothing appeared on screen. ‘Convenient’ would say the hardcore skeptic; ‘customary’ would reply the experienced Fortean, who knows fully well these sort of things happen all the time.

    The Epilogue

Our tale has basically come to an end, which doesn’t mean the UFO activity in the area fully ceased; Benítez reveals other interesting incidents near Conil during that time of 1989 in his book La Quinta Columna –including the observation of another giant being by a local artisan on the morning on September 22nd. Further confirming the supposition made by few people in the UFO field –including yours truly– that high strangeness events almost never happen in isolation; rather, it seems the ‘energy’ conducing to these  manifestations slowly increases, until a final dramatic ‘crisis’ unfolds.

And if someone needs further confirmation that the year 1989 was exceptionally ‘charged’ with high strangeness, we but need to remind our dear Coppertops of another remarkable close encounter report, which happened just two days before the Conil case: I’m talking of course about the landing in the Russian city of Voronezh, where children and other witnesses interacted with giant humanoids and robotic entities.

Which begs the question: Why does the phenomenon chooses to manifest so prominently in places like Voronezh, or in Conil de la Frontera?

    The Conclusion

In the comic book world, the Marvels mini-series created by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross holds a prominent place because it managed to show all the familiar stories of the Marvel super-heroes from a fresh new perspective: That of the human bystanders, who are forced to observe their actions and epic battles of these god-like beings from a safe distance, not fully understanding their motives or even what’s really going on.

When I think of the Conil case, I feel it is a similar situation. Because this amazing story is far more suggestive by what it doesn’t reveal, than by what it actually does. The testimony of the main witnesses feels like broken pieces of a larger puzzle, hinting to a bigger tapestry of events that took place covertly in that placid beach town of Cádiz, which we will probably never fully understand.

Comparing Conil with a comic book story may look like a cheap literary trick on my behalf, yet it you think about it there are MANY aspects of this close encounter that seem almost plucked out of a pulp novel or a Sci-Fi B-movie. Forget about the grotesque appearance of the male ‘changeling’, which we already equated to that of the extraterrestrial invaders in This Island Earth (1955) or how the ten-foot-tall giant is slightly reminiscent of Gort in the classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) –at least in the sense of how it seems to serve as a ‘protector’ of the couple, by distracting the attention of the witnesses away from them. Consider also how there’s this strong link between the humanoids’ ability to transform themselves into a human form, and the ability of the extraterrestrial visitor portrayed by Jeff Bridges in the 1984 movie Starman to do the same thing –and do you remember the main form of ‘technology’ shown by this alien? That’s right: small metallic spheres which glowed with a blue light. Sound familiar?

Make no mistake, my dear Coppertops: Those who read the previous paragraph as an attempt to shoot down the case on my part, should do well to grab a copy of Jeffrey Kripal’s book Mutants & Mystics. Kripal is a scholar of comparative religious studies at Rice University, and rather than being skeptic on the subject of UFOs and paranormal phenomena –his last book was co-authored with Whitley Strieber– he points out there’s an undeniable ‘cross-pollination’ between these type of events and the pop culture we consume in our literature, television and films; to the point that trying to play ‘chicken-and-the-egg’ between fantasy tales and paranormal cases becomes a rather tricky proposition…

Because the truth of the matter is that stories of paranormal agencies infiltrating our world in human guise have existed way before the existence of Sci-Fi movies, or even cinematography. In fact, such folklore goes back centuries –if not millennia– into the dawn of Time. Oxford scholar W.Y. Evans-Wentz managed to gather the remnants of the belief in the Fey folk in his seminal book The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries (1911), and talked to a lot of honest, hard-working country folk who still believed –or had actually interacted– with these elusive beings who from time to time chose to meddle in the affairs of men:

They are able to appear in different forms. One once appeared to me, and seemed only four feet high, and stoutly built. He said “I am bigger than I appear to you know. We can make the old young, the big small, the small big.

The Celtic peasants also believed lakes and bodies of water acted as ‘bridges’ or conduits in which the transmutation from the human to the fairy state took place. But if that is the case… couldn’t the OPPOSITE be also possible? Could water be a medium by which liminal beings could get entrance into our world? Both Evans-Wentz and Guillermo Del Toro would probably concur…

When you boil them down to their bare essence, and you stop the bickering caused by either trying to validate or debunk a given case, the true main difference between fictional stories and factual close encounters is that Fiction HAS TO MAKE SENSE. A novel or movie plot needs to have a core of consistency in order to make all the elements fall into place.

Finding sense in the events that took place in Conil on the night of September 29th is practically impossible: If what Juan José Benítez reveals in La Quinta Columna concerning the military radar station which remained inoperable during those days is true, then it would hint the beings making their appearance at the Bateles Beach wanted to perform their infiltration activities covertly, away from the eyes of the Spanish government; yet if that is the case, then WHY choose a tourist town, instead of a more remote location? WHY suffer the presence of pesky human interlopers near them? WHY was Pedro González the only one in the group who could see the giant at first? WHY perform their shape-shifting spectacle lying down on a beach, instead of the safety of their own ‘craft’ (if that is what the ‘red moon’ observed by the witnesses was)? WHY the imperfect transformation, which still rendered the male with such abnormal-looking facial features? WHY the incapacity to cover the unusual shape and size of their tracks?

…And WHY O WHY the need to reappear in front of the witnesses not once, but twice??

These are just a few of the open questions left by the Conil case. How one chooses to approach them tells more about one’s personal opinion about the UFO phenomenon, than about what really happened on that fateful night. In a polarizing world demanding to view things as either ‘black’ or ‘white’, I personally feel this case was always meant to remain ‘gray’. I consider the actions allegedly performed by the entities manifesting at Conil de la Frontera as *deliberately* absurd; like a well-crafted act enacted for the benefit of the young witnesses, who also had a part to perform in this play, even if they didn’t know it or were capable or comprehend it. The high strangeness of this encounter is both equally suggestive of non-human intervention, while at the same time being sufficiently devoid of enough concrete evidence so that almost 30 years after the story broke, it sadly remains scarcely known outside the Spanish-speaking UFO community.

“We want you to believe in us,” said one of the UFOnauts who abducted patrolman Herbert Schirmer in 1967, “… but not too much.” If the tall blond who left those inhuman footprints on the Bateles beach had ever opened his mouth and talked to the witnesses, he might have said similar words. Just as it was in 1989, his cold eyes remain an open question hinting at answers that could be not just incomprehensible… but also deeply unsettling.

Space Travel Will Morph the Shape of Your Brain

When traveling into space, your brain will literally change shape. In a recent study published in Nature Microgravity, researchers found that astronauts brains change shape in outer space to adapt to microgravity. Using MRI scans from before and after spaceflights, researchers found that gray matter — the darker tissue that processes information in your brain — decreases in some areas and increases in others.

During spaceflight, the brain compresses and expands, and the extent of these changes depend on how long astronauts are in space. This is because changes in gravity affect the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, says principal investigator Rachael Seidler, professor of kinesiology and psychology at the University of Michigan.

“When you’re on earth, you can imagine that gravity is pulling fluid down in your body, but in space you don’t have gravity to do that, so the fluid is shifted up towards the head,” Seidler tells Inverse.

“I don’t want to give people the impressions is that you’re losing brain cells,” Seidler continues, “but it could potentially be shifting the location of the brain in the skull or compressing it.”

Astronauts who spent a longer time in space experienced more changes in the brain. Seidler believes gray matter increases in the parts of the brain that control leg movement possibly because the brain adapts to moving the body in microgravity.

This effect, or the ability of the brain to reorganize itself to form new neural connections and adapt, is called the neuroplasticity effect. That way, astronauts learn new motor skills and get better at moving through space.

“You’re floating and in a sense it’s like swimming,” Seidler says. “You’re using your brain differently. Your muscles are contracting differently. We see that the regions increasing are the brain learning how to move the body in space. The more you learn, the better you learn with adapting to the microgravity environment.”

Previously, Seidler found that extended space missions affect astronauts’ inner ear, which decreases their balance abilities. And since the brain has changed and adapted to space, astronauts may initially have a difficult time walking and standing up straight when they return to Earth. But even as the brain learns to adapt to Earth’s gravity again, it may take a different pathway to make up for structural brain changes from spaceflight.

Seidler plans to continue studying how shape changes in the brain affect behavior and thought. Right now, she’s in the middle of a study testing balance, motor function, short-term memory, mental rotations, and other brain abilities of astronauts up to six months after spaceflight. This will help her team better understand if these brain changes reflect brain plasticity.

These findings might help researchers develop better treatments of other health conditions that affect brain function, such as normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition where cerebrospinal fluid causes pressure in the brain and can affect leg movement, the bladder, and mental processes.

More likely, in the future when humans embark on longer flights, potentially to Mars, this research can help scientists better understand how people’s brain functions will adapt in space.

“I think it will be important to understand, if people are in space longer, what it might that mean for brain function when people get to Mars, or what that might mean for recovery functions when they get back,” Seidler says.

A Stunning New Crop Circle Has Shown Up & It’s Very Mysterious

A new crop circle has appeared in Reigate Hill, Surrey according to a recent report. While the reports are still recent and not much is known about the circle, including specific details about the formation that could tell us more about how it got there, this one is quite fascinating in design.

Why talk about crop circles? As we will discuss below, they are a phenomenon that simply can’t be ignored. Formations show up every single year and come with great mystery, even in the scientific realm. Many do not realize some of the amazing things that are happening inside crop circles that blow the board and rope theory out the window.

Some of these formations are so immense and complex as to defy reason. And after all these decades, none of the perpetrators have been caught in the act of making any of the truly extraordinary formations.” – Richard Dolan, historian, academic, author, and one of the world’s leading UFO researchers (Source)

Richard’s thoughts there are quite telling of this reality, and even scientific minds are at a loss for words as although they believe the circles are done by humans, they are calling it the most science oriented art movement ever.

For example, Richard Taylor, a University of Oregon physicist, published a paper on them in the 2011 issue of Physics World, stating:

“Crop circle arts are not going to give up their secrets easily. This summer, unknown artists will venture into the countryside close to your homes and carry out their craft, safe in the knowledge that they are continuing the legacy of the most science-oriented art movement in history.”

But what would cause a physicist to conclude that these works do not have an extraterrestrial explanation? Or even consider the issue seriously?

    Amazing Facts About Crop Circles

When you begin to explore the reality of crop circles you start to realize how one cannot simply pass the phenomenon off as people walking out into a field with some ropes and boards and making a design. It would be naive to make such a claim.

Above is a picture of an 800 foot crop circle that appeared in Wiltshire, England back in 2001. It caused a lot of commotion, and as you can see, it was very beautiful and extremely complex. The design consisted of 409 circles that form what’s known as atriskelion, a symbol that dates back thousands of years. There is some great footage of it in the documentary Crop Cricles: Quest for Truth by Academy Award-winning director William Gazecki. You can view that here.

“It was so large that it took us half an hour to find the centre.”

There are some more great images of it in this YouTube video. You can also see footage of it taken by a helicopter flying above from the documentary Thrive in this video (at the 26.16 minute mark). This circle marks just one of thousands of verified formations that continue to baffle scientists, researchers, and onlookers alike.

Richard Taylor, the aforementioned scientist who studied these circles, again expressed his belief that this was one of the greatest art revolutions in history when he published his scientific analysis of crop circles in the journal Nature in 2010.

After studying the affected grass in the lab, he concluded that the circle makers must be using GPS devices, lasers, and microwaves to create these designs because the nodes of some of the stalks had been blasted out on one side. This same effect has been replicated by highly localized microwave heating, which is what causes the stocks to flop over to one side.

While he was able to come up with a scientifically feasible explanation for this phenomenon, he fails to address how hoaxers could come into possession of such advanced technology. It’s clear that there would be no other way to make some of these circles, so what is really going on here?

If something like this caused the formations, then we are clearly talking about a highly sophisticated agency behind the phenomenon.” – Richard Dolan

Did you know that the electromagnetic field over the area where a circle appears is usually electrostatically charged? Or that there is a rare form of electromagnetic energy called an “ionized plasma vortex,” also known as ball lighting, involved with these formations?

The helicopters you see in the video are military helicopters. Military involvement with UFOs is well documented, and this should be no surprise.

These are verified facts, which is why studies published in scientific journals have tried to come up with explanations that differ from unknown or extraterrestrial. For example, Dr. Terence Meadon, a professional physicist, meteorologist, and archaeologist at the University of Oxford, said that these balls of light are a result of wind currents and ionized plasmas. Whatever the case may be, the fact that scientists are taking note should signal that this phenomenon is worth our attention.

What Archaeologists Really Think About Ancient Aliens, Lost Colonies, And Fingerprints Of The Gods

It’s no secret that far more people watch TV shows like the History Channel’s ‘Ancient Aliens’ than attend lectures by professional archaeologists and historians.  Millions of people tune in to watch TV series and docu-dramas with a questionable grip on facts about the past.  The stories spun by producers and writers may have some basis in truth, but they’re largely stories — they’re compelling stories, though, and they’re aimed at a general audience the way that most academic output isn’t.

People are also reading books about ancient aliens and other forms of pseudoarchaeology, according to archaeologist Donald Holly. He starts a recent open-access book review section in the journal American Antiquity by asking archaeologists to entertain the idea of pseudoarchaeology — just for a little bit — so that we can create better teachable moments, whether we’re talking to students or to anyone interested in our jobs.

People who read these books are not ignorant or obstinate, he points out, but rather undecided about alternative archaeological explanations and clearly interested in understanding the past.  ”It’s time we talk to the guy sitting next to us on the airplane,” Holly asserts.  In collecting nine reviews of popular-on-Amazon pseudo-archaeology books by professional archaeologists, Holly hopes that this will both “offer the silent and curious majority that is interested in these works a professional perspective on them” and give archaeologists unfamiliar with the books a pseudoarchaeology primer.

The article starts out with two reviews of books whose main premise is that we need advanced humans — or nonhumans — to make sense of past developments. First up, Graham Hancock’s Fingerprints of the Gods: The Evidence of Earth’s Lost Civilization, reviewed by Ken Feder, an archaeologist famous for his anti-pseudoarchaeology book Frauds, Myths, and Mysteries: Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology. The gist of Fingerprints is that an extraordinarily advanced civilization roamed the seas thousands of years ago, giving advice to the people they found in places like Egypt and Peru and helping them establish their own civilizations. In return, these advanced peoples were treated as gods, particularly after some cataclysmic event wiped them out. Feder’s main problems with Hancock’s book include the fact that he cherry-picked his data, not bothering to address all the evidence; that he relies on very old and discredited fringe thinkers; and that he can’t conceive of cultural evolution.

In the second review, The Ancient Alien Question, archaeologist Jeb Card points out, as does Feder, that the origins of this idea lay in Victorian mysticism and Theosophy, a movement that “blended hermetic magic, spiritualism, Western curiosity about Eastern religion, colonial racism, and misconceptions of evolution into a worldview of root races, lost continents, and ascended masters who originated on Venus or other worlds.” The author of The Ancient Alien Question, Philip Coppens, was a regular on the Ancient Aliens TV series and presents academic research as if science itself is mysterious. Most problematic, Card finds, is Coppens’ invocation of “the destruction of the Library of Alexandria and other book burnings as suppression of ancient truth without recognizing his own call for the destruction of the scientific order, replacing scientific investigation with a new history of mysticism and myth.”

Other books in the review section focus on specific sites or cultures and illustrate that the popular author has artificially selected which information to present.  Andrew Collins’ bookGöbekli Tepe: Genesis of the Gods, reviewed by archaeologist Eric Cline, deals with the Neolithic site in Turkey that Collins tries to connect to the biblical Garden of Eden by treating the Bible as incontrovertible fact. Black Genesis: The Prehistoric Origins of Ancient Egypt by Robert Bauval and Thomas Brophy, reviewed by archaeologist Ethan Watrall, misunderstands both astronomy and the Bible to show that the Egyptian state was “black African” yet also manages to accurately point out that academic archaeology has for a long time ignored sub-Saharan Africa.

The southwestern U.S. is covered by Gary David’s Star Shrines and Earthworks of the Desert Southwest, reviewed by archaeologist Stephen Lekson. While Lekson admits that David is onto something with his “loose, journalistic style,” the “content [of the book] is fantastic, it is phenomenal, it is flabbergasting, it is… a mish-mash.” Archaeologist Kory Cooper tackles Iron Age America Before Columbus by William Conner, which suggests that there is evidence of iron smelting sites in prehistoric North America.

Cooper’s highest praise is that it “would make a useful reference for an Introduction to Logic course because the book is a veritable catalogue of logical fallacies.” And archaeologist Benjamin Auerbach reviews The Ancient Giants Who Ruled America: The Missing Skeletons and the Great Smithsonian Cover-Up by Richard Dewhurst, who uses old newspaper articles to claim that not only were the skeletons of giants found in the U.S., but that the most well-known science museum in the country tried to hide the evidence. Auerbach points out that he personally has studied many of the skeletons Dewhurst mentions and “none had statures over six feet.” The selective evidence in these books is clearly problematic, but not as problematic as the motif underlying many pseudoarchaeology books.

The primary theme among these popular pseudoarchaeology books that professionals have a major problem with is ethnocentrism, or the idea that we can judge other cultures based on the yardstick of our own. But racism figures in here too.  Archaeologist Larry Zimmerman reviews The Lost Colonies of Ancient America by Frank Joseph, who insists that mainstream archaeologists are the ones ignoring information on transoceanic voyages and that any number of past civilizations may have colonized the New World first.

Zimmerman, though, notes that “Joseph echoes half a millennium of speculation geared toward inventing a deep Old World history in the Americas, thereby challenging the primacy of American Indians in the hemisphere, or at least implying their inferiority, their poor stewardship of the land, and the need to civilize them, all in the service of Manifest Destiny and justification for taking their land.”

Similarly, John Ruskamp’s Asiatic Echoes: The Identification of Chinese Pictograms in Pre-Columbian North American Rock Writing, reviewed by archaeologist Angus Quinlan, puts forth the idea that pictograms found in North American rock art are Chinese script characters left by an otherwise archaeologically invisible trip across the Pacific. The similarity is substantial, Ruskamp insists, but Quinlan calls it “another illustration of deductive thinking at its worst.” Further, Quinlan points out that these sorts of interpretations that try to shoehorn in foreign visitors to explain New World culture are “disrespectful of the Native American cultures that used rock art in their sociocultural routines.”

This portion of the Great Gallery, found in Horseshoe Canyon, is an example of a Barrier Canyon Style pictograph (painted rock art). The full panel is 200 feet long, 15 feet high and the paintings are life-sized human figures. The largest figure pictured is about 7 feet tall. Archaeologists are trained as anthropologists to recognize and celebrate the diversity of humanity, both today and in the past.  Eric Cline succinctly explains this in his review, noting “pseudo archaeologists cannot accept the fact that the mere humans might have come up with great innovations such as the domestication of plants and animals or built great architectural masterpieces such as the Sphinx all on their own; rather, they frequently seek or invoke divine, or even alien, assistance to explain how these came to be.”

Pseudoarchaeology books are problematic for archaeologists for a number of reasons.  First, of course, they tend to present misinformation, cherry-picked from legitimate (and not-so-legitimate) sources that is often taken as fact because it’s presented as fact. Archaeologists, as scientists, can no more select what data to consider than a chemist can select which laws of chemistry to follow. Second, pseudoarchaeology seems like a legitimate body of scholarship because authors tend to cite one another, creating a body of information that, however outlandish it sounds, fits together. Archaeology also does this, but as scientists, we are invested in improving our understanding of the past rather than in protecting our own theories the way pseudo archaeologists do.

But these books are perhaps most problematic for archaeologists because, as Lekson notes, “alternative archaeology is more interesting than the stuff we write… more interesting to more people, that is.”  Academic archaeologists are not trained to write readably, which means there is a large opening for authors to connect with the “guy on the airplane.” Archaeologists like Brian Fagan who do write more approachable books have to walk a fine line between making data interesting and not making extraordinary claims.

Unfortunately, tales of ancient aliens and extraordinary humans creating the Pyramids as a communication device are often more fascinating than slow cultural change.  We as archaeologists need to find a way to showcase the humanity of the past and get across the idea that ancient humans were intelligent, capable, and innovative — that those of us alive today are the product of that long history of innovation, and that we are continuing the tradition of our early ancestors by inventing cars, computers, and, yes, even pseudoarchaeology.

For more on pseudoarchaeology books, you can read theAmerican Antiquity book reviews here, or check out the fantastic blog by Jason Colavito, the “skeptical xenoarchaeologist,” who critiqued Hancock’s recent appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast. And if you want to take a class in pseudoarchaeology, Ethan Watrall has put his fall 2015 Michigan State University course online, with all course material freely available to anyone who’s interested.
