Below is a video that shows an unexplained anomaly that occurred on NASA instruments using 304 Angstroms. An ultraviolet instrument shows an extreme and sudden change in both a composite image and again on SDO’s camera. Immediately the producers of the video went to the GONG network and were able to capture anomalies that happened at the exact same time. Within minutes of having captured these strange flashes the pictures began to disappear from the websites.

Since bizarre flashing has already been reported this month and the last few months I felt these images should be called to your attention. I am not pretending to know specifically what happened but, it appears to have happened in the corona of the Sun and may involve this helium cone that has been brought to everybody’s attention.

An interview with the guy responsible for dressing astronauts.

Robert Trevino is a senior engineer with NASA's Crew and Thermal Systems Division. Among other duties, that means he's responsible for what astronauts wear in outer space. Whether it's regular cotton polos and cargo shorts on the International Space Station or textiles resistant to fire and bacteria designed for the mission to Mars, Trevino and his team must consider every aspect of astronaut wear, from comfort to weight to durability. The question of laundry might sound banal at first, but it in fact reveals how even the most trivial aspects of spaceflight must be considered long and hard if humanity is to push its boundaries.

I spoke with Trevino at length about the current state and future development of space-wear. The conversation has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Motherboard: Within the International Space Station, the astronaut uniform consists of a polo and cargo pants. Is there anything special about these?

No, that's just very comfortable clothing that the astronauts like. The space station is what we call a one-atmosphere, or shirtsleeve, environment. The air is just like the air we breathe on Earth–20 percent oxygen, 80 percent nitrogen–so we don't have the flammability concerns that we have in Apollo or Skylab, which have a much higher oxygen level.

Motherboard: This may be a stupid question, but where do you buy all the polos and cargo pants? Costco?

We have a contractor, Lockheed Martin, which provides the clothing, and they purchase from Lands' End, Cabela's, Blackhawk. They are commercial products, but we do test them to our requirements.

Motherboard: Besides flammability, are there any other concerns about the current uniform?

The clothes we're talking about are their daily wear, what they wear going through their daily routine inside the station—operating the equipment, doing experiments, doing maintenance, things like that. All the crew members are also required to do at least an hour of exercise a day. We have to do exercise to mitigate the effects of zero gravity on the body—muscle atrophy, loss of calcium in the bones. We have a whole different ensemble for exercise. The exercise clothes are also commercial, but we have been looking at new material that is much more breathable, odor absorbing and sweat resistant.

Motherboard: Are the exercise clothes just tracksuits?

When the crews get assigned to a space station mission, they go to our lab that has clothing. In their training they get to evaluate some of the clothing, and they select what they like. For example, with exercise clothing, just like you might want a loose fit on a T-shirt, another crew member might want to have more of a compression fit. Almost all the exercise clothes are breathable, 100 percent polyester, and then the shorts, the socks tend to be polycotton. The underwear is up to them.

We don't have a laundry system, so the space station crew basically wear clothes until they smell bad, then throw them in the trash. After the Progress, the Russian cargo vehicle, docks and all the cargo's unloaded, they load it up with trash, which burns up on re-entry. In the future, on missions farther from Earth, we're not going to have that luxury, of the space station having cargo vehicles that bring them fresh clothing. We've done trade studies of providing a laundry system which uses water and power and requires something to take it up, versus the cost of just replacing the clothing, and right now it's essentially cheaper to replace the clothing because water is just too valuable of a resource.

Unless we find so much ice on Mars that we have plenty of water, water will still be a problem. We're interested in developing clothing that will be much more antibacterial, and I also have some research projects going on looking at alternate laundry systems that are not water-based.

We've looked at putting clothing that's already perspired on and has an odor into an airlock and exposing it to the vacuum of space. We did that and saw a decrease in bacteria, but odor comes from decaying bacteria. Ultraviolet is already being used in hospitals to disinfect rooms, so we've done some testing of exposing different material swatches to ultraviolet. We have a crew that's testing the frequency of microwaves and the amount of power provided because we know that microwaves will kill bacteria, but we don't want to also melt the clothing.

Even if we don't get the clothes as clean as you would in a full laundry cycle in your home with water and soap and everything, if we can just extend the life or the use of that clothing for two weeks to four weeks or six weeks, we've already cut the amount of clothing in half. We have a project here at NASA called Logistics Reduction for Advanced Exploration Missions, where we want to look at ways that we can reduce some of the logistics for these missions, because when you go to Mars, you're not going to have cargo resupply coming. It might be a three-year mission with a one-year stay on the surface, and you really need to bring everything with you. It would be too expensive to send cargo vehicles with clothing.

Motherboard: How long do the uniforms currently last?

They wear exercise clothing for not more than two weeks, but their other clothes last much longer. What they do in the space station is they get a certain amount of daily wear—polos and shorts. You normally have a rotation of three to six months. If they wear one shirt that they really like for a couple of months, they might throw that one away.

Before the term "wearable technology" came up, we were doing a lot of that – for example, in the spacesuit. Inside the spacesuit, one would wear a liquid cooling and ventilation garment. It basically looks like a pair of long johns that go from your ankles up to your wrist. In it, there's a series of tubing through which we circulate water. It acts just like a radiator in your car. As you're working in space and generating metabolic heat, you have air that will create conduction in the spacesuit. You've got to get that heat away from your body, so this garment will conduct your body heat. Water will circulate in cold and come out hot. It's basically keeping you comfortable by removing heat. We attach these tubings to the garment, and then underneath that we wear a heart monitor to measure heart rate. We also have looked at a CO2 sensor to monitor the amount of CO2 inside the suit because we're circulating oxygen inside the spacesuit, but we don't want a CO2 build up.

Motherboard: Any big upgrades to the spacesuit coming up?

We've looked into a lot of heads-up displays for the spacesuit. The difficulty there is, first of all, it has to work in 100 percent oxygen. Usually when you have electronics in 100 percent oxygen, you have to be very careful. There are safety issues there. The other thing is, there are some displays that are sort of like Google Glass or microvision, but if you mount anything on the head, you can't reach in there and adjust it. It has to be mounted on the spacesuit, outside in the vacuum of space, where it's exposed to really high and low temperature swings. The environment can be from minus 275 degrees Fahrenheit to plus 300 degrees. We are interested in technologies—some of them are inside the suit, some of them are outside—to provide the information astronauts need to monitor the suit. The status of their oxygen remaining, power remaining, their CO2 level—those are all things they have to monitor.

Motherboard: How do they receive that information now?

On their chest. You always see this module that's mounted on their chest called the Displays and Controls Module. If you look straight down at your chest, this module sticks out, maybe four, five inches above the chest outside of the spacesuit, and it has an LED display there. You press a button and it cycles through the different parameters. That's the aspects of the suit, but procedures or checklists could also be on the heads-up display. We actually have a laminated plastic checklist that's mounted on the wrist of the spacesuit. Many years ago we did look at an electronic checklist. We experimented with it on the space station, and we would've gone with that one, but at the time we used LCD, liquid crystal screens. We did some testing, but it got much colder than we expected and the crystal displays don't work very well in the cold, so the images started fading out.

Motherboard: Apparently fluid in the body shifts without gravity, so sometimes astronauts' limbs can become bloated?

Right, that's called a fluid shift. Our bodies have evolved for millions of years in one gravity. Gravity is always pulling you down and all of your fluids are fighting gravity, so when the heart pumps the blood out to the extremities, it doesn't have to pump back down because gravity is assisting it. When you get to zero G, you lose that. You don't have the evolutionary pull of gravity on you, so the fluids and your blood-flow re-distribute. Right now, when you're standing on Earth in one gravity, you have more fluids in your lower torso than your upper torso, so when you get to zero G, it [shifts]. The astronauts do get sort of puffy in their heads. Their bodies get a little bit less than their heads and torsos. It takes a little bit of adaptation to get them stabilized. Some are not so extreme, others are very, very puffy. We've heard the expression that they look like Charlie Brown. It's the Charlie Brown effect.

Motherboard: Is that something you guys have been trying to address?

For the spacesuit, [fluid shift is]critical. You have to have a very proper fit in the spacesuit for their arms and the gloves and the legs. Crew members actually grow, depending on their height on Earth, an inch or an inch and half. That is primarily in the spinal area because your spine is under compression under one G, so when you have zero gravity the spine stretches.

Motherboard: How quickly will they grow?

I think it's within the first few days that you start stretching. We take measurements to find out what's a comfortable fit for the spacesuit, then we'll add an inch or so to the height of their torsos anticipating this growth. It's not an issue with their daily wear because those are a little bit more adjustable. Your polo, if you get a little bit taller, is just not tucked in as much.

One more thing that also has a lot of applications in the future here on Earth: Outside the spacecraft, when you do a space walk, it's minus 275 degrees to 300 degrees. We have to provide insulation in the spacesuit for that. The current technology in the spacesuit for that is aluminized mylar with material between it in separate layers. That is called multi-layered insulation. It's the same as a thermos bottle, where you have a vacuum layer. There's nothing better than a vacuum layer in a thermos bottle because there's nothing to conduct the heat or the cold to the inner layer. In the spacesuit, we have that insulation that keeps the astronaut from getting the extreme heat or the extreme cold.

The problem is that insulation only works in a vacuum. It works on the moon because the moon doesn't have an atmosphere, but on Mars, where we have an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, that technology will not work, so we'll have to provide another insulation. We can use the technology you have right now in your parka, thinsulate or permaloc, but those are very bulky and very thick. So we have been doing some research into insulation for future spacesuits that would work in an atmosphere like Mars, and we're working with this company called Aspen Aerogels that makes a really neat material called aerogel that's a super insulation. It's the world's lightest solid material. You can get a cube of this in your hand and you can hold it, but you won't feel it because it's so light. We're looking at it as kind of a flexible insulation. If we can develop this material, it can theoretically replace two or three inches of current fibrous insulation of thinsulate or permaloc with maybe like a base of a quarter inch of this aerogel. So in the future you could have a parka that would be as thin as a windbreaker and it would provide you the same insulation.

Motherboard: Any other interesting projects?

Most of the exercise clothing is polyester, and a lot of our food containers are plastic. Right now, with trash, we're just throwing it all away. But we've looked at something called a heat melt compactor, like a trash compactor but it gets to a high temperature. You can separate your plastics from your other trash and put it into this compactor, melt the plastic and compress it into a hockey puck—maybe an inch or three-quarters of an inch thick, maybe six inches in diameter. Plastic happens to be a really good radiation shielding material, so we can make these thick bricks and line the space station's sleeping compartments with them to provide radiation shielding for the astronauts. If we can get some of these materials from clothing and reuse them, turn them into these pucks, then, instead of flying hundreds of pounds of radiation material, we can be using this trash for long-term missions, making our own radiation shielding from the plastics in the clothing.

The other thing is 3D printing. If we have this hockey puck of plastic, could we develop a system that would heat that and put it into another device that would extrude it into a fiber? 3D printers use a feedstock that almost looks like spool, that sort of texture. We had the idea of converting our discarded clothes and plastics and other things to develop a plastic that would provide the feedstock for a 3D printer. We're thinking—again, long-term—of designing clothing that, instead of throwing it away, we can do something with it. Can we convert it into radiation shielding? Can we convert it to feedstock for a 3D printer? Do other things with it? If not, we have the mentality that we've had on previous missions, that we have all these logistics and we throw them away and get new supplies. But for three-year missions, our whole mentality for recycling air and water and clothing and trash has to be different.

'Is this an alien invasion?' No, it's a cluster of paper lanterns over Longmont

At twilight on Saturday, about 15 glowing paper lanterns were sent into the sky over Longmont as a memorial to two men killed in a DUI-related car crash exactly five years earlier, on Feb. 25, 2012.

But the floating memorial left a handful of people in Longmont perplexed by the sight of mysterious lights, evoking thoughts of spaceships, UFOs and other extraterrestrial activities.

"I thought I was hallucinating or something," said Joyce Brooks, one of three Longmont residents who told the Times-Call they'd seen the objects.

For the fourth year since the crash, friends and family of Anthony Sandoval-Palma and Jerry Martinez congregated at Ninth Avenue and Hover Street, lighting the reddish-orange lanterns and letting them float up toward the heavens.

"We watch them until we don't see them anymore," Mary Moreno, a friend of Palma's since third grade, said Thursday.

In years past, they've lit as many as 30 lanterns on Martinez's birthday — Feb. 21 — and the day of the crash.

The two 27-year-olds were killed when they car they were riding in rolled on St. Vrain Road near North 75th Street and ejected Sandoval-Palma and Martinez. The car's driver, Adolph Lopez, pleaded guilty in 2013 to DUI-related vehicular homicide.

At the most recent memorial this past weekend, Moreno said, she joked with Jessica Craft about the first year they sent the paper lanterns aloft. She said, "Remember, when the newspaper thought they were aliens?"

Moreno said the Times-Call questioned readers about it back then. She said she got a laugh out of witnesses expressing the same curiosity this year.

Craft, whose husband was close friends with both men, said they're planning on lighting lanterns again May 3, on Sandoval-Palma's birthday, and every year on the anniversary of the crash.

"I think it's very special that all of us get together," she said.

Aliens?

A Longmont resident named Sue, who spoke on the condition her last name not be used, was the first to call the Times-Call saying she was surprised not more people had been talking about the lights.

She said she thought the first object she saw on Saturday was a drone — until she saw another one, and then many more, trailing it.

"I am not an alien person, that's not where my head goes, but the thought that came into my head was, 'Is this an alien invasion?'" Sue said. "And then I thought no, there has to be a logical explanation."

It kept her up at night, she said, so she turned to Google for an explanation. Her search of "Six Orange UFO fireball phenomenon 2013" produced a still image of something similar to what she had seen, though the objects moved more in the video.

Brooks called the Times-Call after Sue's comments were printed in the newspapers's anonymous TC Line feature, saying she was relieved somebody else had come forward as a witness, otherwise she thought she was "going crazy."

A third woman, Joyce Todd, who said she is 90 years old, called to say she also saw red and pale yellow lights. She said it's hard to say how high in the sky they were, but they were visible in the distance from where she lives in the Fox Hill neighborhood.

"They're from space, there's no question in my mind," Todd said.

The lights hung in the air in a cluster at about 11 p.m. Saturday, she said, until they disappeared at about 2:30 a.m. She said she's positive they weren't airplanes, and her most recent sighting wasn't the first. She said she's seen lights in space all her life, and asserts they're real.

"I've seen so many things like this in my lifetime, it's just mind boggling," she said.

Educated guesses

Local astronomy researchers said they did not track anything that would seem exceptional to humans outside the space realm — Venus, fireballs, satellite break-ups or even UFOs — in the air over Longmont that night, meaning the objects to them remained a mystery.

Vern Raben, president of the Longmont Astronomical Society, said the club's all-sky camera shows nothing at the time the flying objects were reportedly seen.

"I'd guess it's something localized, closer to the ground, and not astronomical," he said in an email.

The National UFO Reporting Center, based in Washington state, did not respond to messages, though its database shows somebody reported seeing "orange fireballs, bright, scoping the forest" about 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in Nederland. The list of Colorado reports did not extend past that date.

Leonard David, Boulder-area science journalist and author, said the description reminds him of either a misinterpreted fireball or a spacecraft breakup, such as one he saw about a year ago.

"When I hear multiple things when they're flying at the same speed, moving, that look like they're all connected, that's what some of those satellite breakups look like," he said.

But according to the American Meteor Society fireball log, two nearby fireballs were inconsistent with the time the objects were reportedly seen in Longmont. And according to the Aerospace rocket body tracker, a reentry of an SL-4 rocket body on Friday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Russia was thousands of miles from Colorado.

Chris Peterson, operator of Cloudbait Observatory in Guffey, said objects in the high atmosphere over Longmont are usually visible from his location, but he tracked nothing that night on his camera.

"Given the time, objects at typical aviation heights might still be reflecting sunlight, giving the described color," he said. "Less likely, but still possible, would be a group of research balloons, which could be as high as the stratosphere and could reflect sunlight."

He believes that it was most likely a low-altitude phenomenon, such as aircraft or balloons, and nothing as high as space or descending from orbit.

Peterson's guesses weren't far from the truth.

Extraterrestrials Aren’t a Threat to Theology, Because They Aren’t New to the Ancient Church

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration captured the attention and imagination of a global audience late last month when NASA scientists announced the discovery of seven planets orbiting a star dubbed TRAPPIST-1 (an acronym for Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope). These planets are a mere 40 light-years away from Earth, all of which are Earth-sized, and three of which are in the so-called “goldilocks” or habitable zone – meaning that their positions relative to their “home” star suggest they could have liquid water and temperatures capable of sustaining life as we know it.

The headlines were sensational: a few almost announcing the discovery of whole extraterrestrial civilizations; most seizing the moment to move copy and sell soap with variations on the theme of, “‘Incredible’ Star System Could Hold Life“, with follow-up stories announcing, “The Prospects for Life on TRAPPIST-1 Keep Getting Better” and “Soon, We’ll Know if there’s Life on TRAPPIST-1’s Exoplanets“. 

The interest is not only scientific, but also theological, with the leading English-language e-journal of Catholic affairs, Crux, holding its breat while asking, “Could Catholicism Handle the Discovery of Extraterrestrial Life?”

The fact is, such speculation is neither new, nor controversial.

The ancient Greeks split on the question, which they treated as a speculative scientific one; Arabic literature in the high Islamic period entertained the idea in fiction (notably in the “Adventures of Bulukiya”  portion of The Arabian Nights, in tales from the 486th to the 537th night); Nicholas of Cusa openly speculated that some heavenly bodies, at least, would almost certainly be inhabited; C.S. Lewis famously wrote a Space Trilogy in the middle of the last century.

The best starting point for reflection upon the ancient world’s fascination with this topic is The Extraterrestrial Life Debate: Antiquity -1915 – A Source Book, edited by Michael J. Crowe.

And so, if you are asking whether the discovery of extraterrestrial life would pose a challenge to the basic tenets of Catholic faith, then the answer is that it would pose no real trouble. There’s nothing new (under the sun) about the questions such a discovery would elicit.

However, the recent find does offer an occasion to do some serious thinking and ask challenging questions about life, the universe, and our place in it . . .

“If we’ve settled on the fat that there’s nobody out there,” Fr. Brian Reedy SJ concludes, “then we would – kind of – rationally miss them, and feel alone . . .” –

First, though: the science behind the discovery is on its own truly astounding.

“What we actually know is deduced: it is modeled from the data,” explained Fr. Brian Reedy SJ, a biophysicist, who – along with his students at the Jesuit Cristo Rey Preparatory School in Houston, Tx. – has designed experiments that have been conducted aboard the International Space Station, and who is currently pursuing a PhD in Moral Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

“We haven’t seen them, and we won’t see them for a while, because they are so distant,” Reedy told Vocaris Media’s flagship Thinking with the Church podcast. “What we see,” Fr. Reedy explained, “is changes to the intensity of the star,” measurements that require extremely sensitive telescopic hardware and highly sophisticated software.

“Just think about the complexity,” involved in isolating the static created by atmospheric interference (the telescope used to make the observations is a terrestrial instrument located in Chile), “to focus in on the steady signal, looking for variations,” Reedy said. “There’re so many things to marvel at in this story,” Reedy offered, “the science itself is fascinating.”

Fr. Reedy SJ speaks in detail about the marvels of the science in the special edition of Thinking with the Church.

He also addresses the questions the discovery  occasions at the intersection of religion and science, including: how we might share the Gospel with an extraterrestrial race, why we might share it and to what end; whether aliens might be capable of incorporation into the Body of Christ, both as a matter of ecclesiology and sacramental economy; and what guidance there might be for such an eventuality in Church history and scriptural typology.

Fr. Reedy SJ offers some surprising and challenging answers, especially regarding the desire to know, once and for all, whether we are alone in the universe.

“I think that – I would say there are two causes to that [wonder]: one is just natural curiosity – like, when you look out into space, and you see the vastness of it, and you see all these little stars that all might have planets – and you just wonder, ‘Is there anybody out there?’ and that’s one kind of question,” Reedy said.

“‘Are we alone in the universe?’ That is a different kind of question,” Reedy continued. “‘Is there anybody out there?’ I relate to that really strongly. ‘Are we alone in the universe?’ I don’t resonate with that question, and I think that – partly – the thing that is missing is that, in Western Civilization we now live in a kind of forcibly depopulated universe,” He explained. “To the medieval mind,” he went on to say, “creation was deeply populated with other beings, spiritual beings: so, the average Christian would believe he had a guardian angel, who was really a rational companion to him in his life, and believed in angelic beings and such, that populated the universe; but also, the kind of real, lived sense of going to Mass and knowing that the whole Communion of Saints was present with you at the Mass.”

Indeed, as the great altars of Christendom attest, the whole Church, past, present and future, from Adam into eternity, is present each time the Mass is offered.

“There are still plurals,” Fr. Reedy noted in reference to the pertinent particular of grammatical structure found in the prayer texts printed in the Missal. “Even if a priest is forced to say Mass by himself because there is no congregation, he still uses the plurals, because he still knows that everyone is there – so, you’re not alone – you’re never alone – and so I don’t connect to that [question] because I think that ‘Are we alone?’ dimension is partly coming from the fact that our universe has been so radically depopulated, and relatively recently.”

“I believe that we are attuned naturally to truth,” Fr. Reedy said, “and I believe in the Communion of Saints and in spiritual beings, and so therefore I think we have a sense that they’re there.”

“If we’ve settled on the fat that there’s nobody out there,” he concluded, “then we would – kind of – rationally miss them, and feel alone: so, on the first part, I’m completely enthralled with the question, ‘Is there anybody out there?’ – like, when you look out, are there people looking back at us? – but, ‘Are we alone?’ – I don’t resonate to that one.”

First trailer for sci-fi film Phoenix Forgotten explores real-life UFO sighting

The new sci-fi film Phoenix Forgotten aims to tell a fictional story around the real-life UFO sighting nicknamed the "Phoenix Lights" that appeared over Arizona back in 1997.

The story follows three people who take off into the desert to investigate the UFO sighting and find some alien horrors. The film is found footage, so your mileage may vary depending on the format -- think The Blair Witch Project with aliens and a touch of "based on a true-ish story" to make it a bit creepier. It looks like a fairly low-to-mid budget horror flick, though Ridley Scott did produce, so that helps.

The true story behind the concept stems from a UFO sighting on March 13, 1997, when hundreds of people saw lights that appeared to be a large spacecraft hovering over Arizona. In a classic Blair Witch-y twist, the film is being billed as the "recently unearthed footage" left behind by the trio that takes off to try to find the craft.

Phoenix Forgotten hits select theaters on April 21. Check out the trailer below.

Roughly 55 percent of Americans think the government would keep alien life secret if given a chance, according to a new YouGov poll.

The poll found U.S. residents were deeply skeptical of how the government would handle first contact with aliens.

When asked “if we discover or are discovered by an alien species one day, do you think it is more likely that the government would tell the public or keep it secret?” only 19 percent agreed the government would tell the public.

Republicans were more likely to be skeptical of the government’s trustworthiness than Democrats, with 61 percent saying the government would keep it secret. Only 51 percent of Democrats held that opinion. Republicans and Democrats are about equally likely to believe in UFOs.

Americans were unsure if aliens would be friendly to humanity, with 29 percent suspecting they would be, while 19 percent suspected any alien life would be hostile. Roughly 12 percent of U.S. adults believe that the government has already made contact with aliens, but is covering up that fact.

The poll was conducted in late February from a representative sample of 2,008 U.S. adults.

When pollsters surveyed the group about surveying the seven planets around the TRAPPIST-1 solar system for aliens, 40 percent of Americans think the planets likely contain some form of extra-terrestrial life, while only 16 percent thought they probably don’t.

Safe space travel: Protecting alien worlds from earthlings - and vice versa

The discovery of seven new Earth-like planets has risen hope to find extraterrestrial life. During space explorations, though, researchers have to be careful to avoid contaminating other worlds with life from Earth.

The dwarf star Trappist-1 and its seven newly discovered planets are promising targets to search for alien life  - but researchers might not even have to travel that far.

"We might find alien life in our own backyard of our solar system," said NASA's Kevin Peter Hand at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Boston this month.

Astrobiologists searching for extraterrestrial life pin their hopes on Jupiter's moons Europa, Callisto and Ganymede as well as on Saturn's moon Enceladus.

"They are covered in ice but beneath there might be oceans with rocky seafloors," said Hand, chief scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

NASA plans to launch a rocket in 2024 sending a lander to Europa which will explore the moon, take samples and possibly "find life that is alive today." 

Sure, the Europa mission probably won't discover intelligent, human-like life and possibly not even fish-like life. But bacteria, which have developed there, would be just as fascinating for researchers.

Although, there is one thing they have to ensure in the first place.

The worst-case scenario for astrobiologists is to one day find life on Europa or elsewhere which has been brought there by humans themselves.

"We don't want to study bacteria from Florida [on other planets]," said Norine Noonan, biologist at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg. 

Just as much as researchers have to prevent potential alien organisms from contaminating Earth, they work hard on protecting space from Earth-based life.

"Any equipment that is sent to touch down on moons or other planets is sterilized several times during its construction", Christian Gritzner of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), told DW.

Rovers, landers and other equipment that are sent to space are built in a clean facility, heated up to over 110 degree centigrade (230 degree Fahrenheit) for several hours or even days, they are irradiated with UV light and sanitized with solvents - measures to kill any bacterium or fungus that might try to get a free ride into outer space.

The Europa lander will also be wrapped in a biobarrier, NASA's Kevin Hand explained - an aluminum foil-like sheath that keeps out any contaminants until it reaches Jupiter's moon.

"The truth is still out there," Noonan pointed out. "Let's not destroy the opportunity to find it."

Protecting the ecosystem on other planets - every astronaut's challenge

Protecting other worlds from Earth-based organisms is not just a voluntary moral conception which some responsible researchers cling to. It is international space law.

United Nations Outer Space Treaty which entered into force in October 1967 calls for all states to"avoid harmful contamination of space and celestial bodies." The treaty came into being in preparation of the landing on the moon.

People were afraid that a visit to the moon might bring uninvited guests to Earth, for example, a deadly microorganism that causes a catastrophic outbreak - just like in the sci-fi novel "The Andromeda Strain" by Michael Crichton.

All rock samples that were flown in from the Moon - as well as the first men on the moon - were put into strict quarantine when entering Earth. Only later, when researchers had realized there is nothing alive on the Moon, rules were relaxed. Still later, people realized that contamination works in both directions. 

"NASA found strange bumps on the lens of some camera equipment of the unmanned Surveyor landers that had been sent to the Moon three years before," said Christian Gritzner. "Nobody knew what it was."

These bumps turned out to be flu viruses. They seem to have been delivered from Earth to the Moon with the help of some technician who had sneezed on the equipment, Gritzner explained.

"Even after 3 years in space, these viruses were still able to reproduce in the lab."

According to Gritzner, this was the moment that people realized how crucial planetary protection really was.

"It is unlikely we'll find life on Mars today," said Norine Noonan. Even if there had once been bacteria or other simple organisms, they are possibly long gone. Still, researchers might find remnants of previous life on Mars and get to know how it emerged and what it was like.

Unlike the Moon and many other celestial bodies in our universe, Mars has an atmosphere and a surface that can harbor life - that makes traveling there even more complicated.

"Any hitchhiker we might deliver there can spread," said NASA's Kevin Hand. According to the European Space Agency ESA, the ExoMars project which tries to find life on Mars, even built a new cleanroom in which to construct itslander Schiaparelli. The landing module even had a portable "clean tent" which traveled with it to its launch site in Baikonur.

"We cannot bake humans"

The challenge to avoid contamination gets even harder when astronauts join their equipment on its travel to Mars - i.e. on a manned spaceflight.

"We are spewing fountains of bacteria," said Norine Noonan, adding that it is impossible to sterilize humans: "We cannot put them into an oven and bake them."

It will still be a long way to figure out which measures will protect Mars from life on Earth during such a journey.

"Maybe a habitat on Mars will have a sanitizing air lock spraying disinfectants," Gritzner said. Astronauts would have to pass the lock every time they enter the Mars surface from their space settlement.

But there will be time enough to figure that out, Gritzner adds, as "a manned spaceflight to Mars is still a long way off."

Discovery of world’s oldest fossil suggests there was alien life on Mars

British scientists have found the remains of microbal bugs in what is the world’s oldest fossil suggesting similar organisms once existed on Mars.

The fossil, which was found in Quebec, Canada, shows life on earth was thriving as far back as 4.2 billion years, hundreds of millions of years earlier than previously thought.

This makes the prospect of life on the Red Planet a distinct possibility, as it was also bombarded with comets that are thought to have brought the building blocks of life to earth.

The bugs are believed to have thrived in a deep sea hydrothermal vent system – volcanic activity on the ocean floor.

Scientists, from University College London, believe the minieral-rich environment in the hot water surrounding the vent may have provided habitats for the early life form.

Matthew Dodd, a member of the UK team, said: ‘Our discovery supports the idea that life emerged from hot, sea floor vents shortly after planet Earth formed.

‘This speedy appearance of life on Earth fits with other evidence of recently discovered 3,700 million year old sedimentary mounds that were shaped by micro-organisms.’

Previously the oldest reported microfossils, from Western Australia, were dated at 3.460 million years old.

However, some experts believe they may be non-biological features in the rocks.

Lead scientist Dr Dominic Papineau, from UCL’s Earth Sciences department, said: ‘The fact we unearthed them from one of the oldest known rock formations suggests we’ve found direct evidence of one of Earth’s oldest life forms.’

The scientists believe the find, that was co-funded by Nasa, could help the search for life on other planets including Mars.

The bugs were living on Earth at a time when Mars is thought to have had oceans or lakes of liquid water on its surface.

Mr Dodd, a PhD student, told the Telegraph:  ‘Early Mars and early Earth are very similar places, so we may expect to find life on both planets at this time.

‘We know that life managed to get a foothold and evolve rapidly on Earth. So if we have life evolving in hydrothermal vent systems maybe even 4.2 billion years ago when both planets had liquid water on their surface, then we would expect both planets to develop early life.

‘If we do future sample returns from Mars and look at similarly old rocks and we don’t find evidence of life then this certainly may point to the fact that Earth might have been a very special exception, and life may just have arisen on Earth.’

Wetenschappers hebben in Canada fossielen van bacteriën gevonden die tussen de 3,77 en 4,29 miljard jaar oud zijn. Het zou gaan om de oudste sporen van leven, bijna zo oud als de aarde zelf, die 4,55 miljard jaar oud is. In die tijd waren op Mars ook de omstandigheden voor leven aanwezig. De studie werd gepubliceerd in het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift Nature.

De wetenschappers vonden de fossielen in de zogenaamde Nuvvuagittuq-belt, een rotslaag ten noorden van de Canadese stad Quebec. Die rotsformatie is de oudste van de aarde en mogelijk 4,29 miljard oud.

"Deze microfossielen zijn de oudste sporen van leven op aarde", zegt geoloog Matthew Dodd van University College London (UCL). "De vondst stelt ons in staat om de puzzelstukken te leggen van de geschiedenis van de aarde en het ontstaan van leven op de planeet."

De ontdekking steunt dan ook de gedachte dat het leven op aarde vrij snel ontstond.  "Als het leven al snel op aarde ontstond, dan kunnen we ons de vraag stellen of dat ook mogelijk is op andere planeten", aldus Dodd.  Hij en andere wetenschappers geloven nu dat de vondst een aanwijzing is dat er ook op Mars leven zou zijn geweest.

4 miljard jaar geleden had Mars namelijk nog een atmosfeer en oceanen en dus zou zich daar toen ook leven hebben kunnen ontwikkelen.

Deze fossielen zijn alleszins veel ouder dan de vorige ontdekking van het oudste leven op onze planeet. In augustus 2016 schreven Australische wetenschappers in Nature over de toen oudste sporen van leven. Het ging om microfossielen van 3,46 miljard oud die gevonden waren in Groenland.

Soon, We’ll Know if TRAPPIST-1’s Exoplanets Could Support Life

• In February, scientists from the European Southern Observatory and NASA announced the discovery of a new solar system —TRAPPIST-1.
• In addition to having the right conditions for water, several of the planets are believed to be "tidally locked", meaning one side would be in perpetual daylight, and the other constant darkness.

AN ASTOUNDING DISCOVERY

In February, scientists from the European Southern Observatory and NASA announced the discovery of a new solar system —TRAPPIST-1. It has seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a dwarf star, three of which are in the star’s habitable zone.

Although TRAPPIST-1 is 40 light-years away, its remarkable similarities to our own solar system make the discovery very exciting to scientists. Of all the solar systems we know of, we’ve never found one with seven planets — let alone multiple Earth-sized planets. TRAPPIST-1’s three habitable planets have density measurements that make them appear to be Earth-like worlds.

Given what TRAPPIST-1’s current configuration looks like, the planets located in the habitable zone or “goldilocks zone” could have water — at least theoretically. However, since its solar system’s sun is smaller than ours, the planets would require a tighter orbit in order to support surface water.

Armed with insights we’ve gathered about our own solar system in recent decades, we have the knowledge and resources to study TRAPPIST-1 — and possibly find life beyond our own planet.

LIFE BEYOND EARTH

Scientists also believe that some of the planets in TRAPPIST-1 are “tidally locked” to their star. That means one side of the planet constantly faces their sun, bathing it in perpetual daylight, while the other side is always in the dark. While that doesn’t sound much like the life we know on our planet, experts believe it wouldn’t completely negate the possibility of life: what really matters is the atmosphere.

We won’t have to wait too long to gain further insight into kind of atmosphere these planets have: once the James Webb Space Telescope launches in October of next year, scientists will be able to study the planets more in-depth. Our knowledge of how tidally locked planets in our own solar system manage such extreme temperatures — based on what we’ve already learned from Neptune and Jupiter — will also lend itself to a better understanding of how the TRAPPIST-1 planets work.

Granted, everything that we know about life stems from our understanding of life on Earth—where we experience both day and night. It’s wholly possibly that in planets where a diurnal cycle isn’t the norm, life develops very differently.

But as Dr. Jessie Christiansen, an astronomer at the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute at the California Institute of Technology, notes while speaking to the Christian Science Monitor, we could liken this to conditions some creatures on our planet know well: the life aquatic. “If you think about life in the deep ocean,” Dr. Christiansen says, “it has evolved without a true diurnal cycle.”

Here on our own planet, we are still constantly surprised by life discovered in sea floors, icy climates, deep caves, and other extreme settings. So, that being said, the idea that life could exist in TRAPPIST-1 shouldn’t be too hard to fathom.

Interview with author of UFOs Over Romania

A UFO book gathering interest and momentum at the moment is ‘UFOs OVER ROMANIA’. In the west, little is known about its author, Dan D. Farcas PhD. With that in mind, I recently took the opportunity to interview Dan in order to try and learn a little more about his interests and how he became involved in UFO research in his home country of Romania.

RL: How and when did you first become interested in the UFO phenomenon?

Dan D. Farcas PhD

DF: I should split the question into two. I’ve always been interested in extraterrestrial issues, but only relatively lately into UFOs. When I was 8 or 9 years old, one of the things I used to play at with my younger brother was to draw our imaginary adventures in a primitive type of comic book. I still have some of them. Most of these adventures took place in outer space, travelling from one planet to another. At the same period of time, I started to write a book on astronomy. In the forties, in Romania, there were no such books available.

When I was 25-35, I published several science fiction short stories, mainly on space travel and contacts with aliens. In these stories, I felt it was quite normal for an alien to appear suddenly, in human form, in an earthly environment, but I still had doubts about UFOs as extraterrestrial vehicles.

I published some popular science articles about extraterrestrial civilizations and, around 1980, I was invited to write a book about this topic. On this occasion, I thought it is normal to inform myself on the UFO phenomenon. Only then, I discovered, by reading some good books, how many well documented cases exist and how important they are.

The book, entitled “De ce tac civilizaţiile extraterestre” (Why cue the extraterrestrial civilizations), published in 1983, was a small bestseller. Then many people asked me about UFOs, so I continued to inform myself more seriously, and published a lot, especially after 1990.

RL: Have you ever had a personal experience with ‘high strangeness’?

DF: I have the memory of several “night visits”, before the age of 5 years. I argued then that they were not dreams. The only thing I remember now is a green hand disappearing behind my bed, somehow in to the wall. I even gave a name to this apparition, something like “that with the hand”.

I had also, in this period, some unexplainable phobias. I felt a terror if I get a glimpse of certain common objects. These reactions have disappeared with time.

RL: Has being an academic aided you in your research of the UFO phenomenon?

DF: I was trained in mathematics, physics and astronomy at a university level. This helped me not only to understand the size and structure of the universe, or what means spaces with more dimensions, but it also gave me a strong sense of sizes, such as differences between thousands, millions and billions of years, or light years. I noticed that, for many, this often means only “very much”, leading to serious confusions.

On the other hand, academic training in such domains, gives you a higher censorship toward certain facts that you hear reported. Among other things, this made me sceptical for a long time, that UFOs may be spacecraft. Of course, life has forced me, in many fields, to go beyond the dogmas learned in school.

Finally, the academic education and my life experience helped me to understand the limitations of some instruments considered “taboo” in our culture. I understood the limits of the scientific method, of the mathematics and logic. All these have relevance in investigating the UFO phenomenon.

RL: Whilst compiling your research for your new book UFO’s OVER ROMANIA you will have read many eye witness reports, did any one account stand out to you and why?

DF: For this book I used, mostly, investigations made by people that I have known and I had confidence in, but I gave also many pages to the cases that I investigated personally over the last 20 years. There were, on the one hand, strange accounts of military pilots, and on the other hand, unexplained encounters of just ordinary people. I was impressed most by the sincerity of all the witnesses and by their desire to find an explanation for what had happened. With the stories from civilians, I was most impressed by the mixture between the classical UFO lore and some characters or features I knew before only in folkloric or religious realms.

But to understand all the things that surprised me, I think it’s better to recommend reading the book, with all those stories.

RL: Has the language barrier been an obstacle in sharing Eastern European UFO reports?

DF: The language barrier is a very serious one. It was partially overcome in technical fields in which international cooperation is mandatory and where you use a limited vocabulary; but it is still a problem in many other areas, including ufology.

The ufological literature, in Romanian language, and about Romanian cases, is not very extensive, but even so, there are many interesting cases and developments which are not known abroad. The situation is, I think, similar in other Eastern European countries.

RL:  You are the chairman of ASFAN. What is this organization?

DF: In 1998, Ion Hobana, a well known writer and ufologist, Harald Alexandrescu, astronomer, and myself, took the initiative of creating the Romanian Association for the Study of Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena (ASFAN), as an organisation of well established specialists in various disciplines relevant for active involvement in UFO research. It was and has remained the only non-governmental and non-profit organisation in Romania, with legal personality, dedicated exclusively to ufology. The legal permission for the establishment of ASFAN was obtained at the Court of the City of Bucharest on September 28, 1998, taking into consideration the approval of the Ministry of Research and Technology and that of the General Mayor of Bucharest. The offices of ASFAN were established in the building of the “Admiral Vasile Urseanu” Astronomical Observatory of the Municipality of Bucharest, Boulevard Lascăr Catargiu 21, Bucharest, property of the City.

For the 21 founding members (demanded by the law at that point in time), highly skilled individuals were selected: mathematicians, astronomers, engineers, specialists in radar, aeronautics, meteorology, photo-imaging, informatics, medicine, as well as interdisciplinary oriented personalities. The main aim was to have a multidisciplinary and pluralistic approach to the phenomenon. The initial elected board was: chairman Ion Hobana (1931-2011), Vice-chairman myself, and executive director Harald Alexandrescu Ph.D., mathematician and astronomer (1944-2005). Since 2011, I am the chairman.

At the beginning, ASFAN organised, for three years, public lectures on a monthly basis. A more complex, one day UFO Conference was organised in May 2014. We had also several other public encounters and actions. ASFAN members were invited to appear on virtually all of the main Romanian TV channels and radio stations for debates on current UFO events and related issues. Unfortunately, the funding and the time available for the members was always very limited, so the achievements of ASFAN were much lower than had been hoped, and in time most of members became inactive with no one to take their place.

ASFAN received and examined written reports, photos, video footage and other UFO data (far from all cases). The most interesting ones are available (in Romanian) on the website of the organization. There are no printed UFO publications in Romania, but some ASFAN members have or had permanent UFO columns or articles published in Romanian popular science magazines.

Ion Hobana kept in touch with many ufologists worldwide, he participated in international conferences and invited to Romania several ufologists from abroad. Other ASFAN members tried to maintain these contacts, making new ones too, with several UFO research organisations and specialists abroad.

 RL: In UFOs OVER ROMANIA you discuss ‘hypercivilizations’. Could you just expand on what this is?

DF: In our Galaxy (the Milky Way), there are around 200 billion stars. Around 30 billion planets can host life. More and more specialists admit that the basic components of life are travelling throughout space, “infecting” immediately all appropriate planets upon contact. In ideal conditions, in three-four billion years of undisturbed evolution, the random game of mutations and the subsequent changing of the environment could produce on such a planet a complex life system, as we see on our Earth and, in some cases, even a “technological civilisation”, that means intelligent beings capable of building spaceships to travel to other inhabitable planets.

As I estimated that, in the history of our Galaxy, could come into being a number of technological civilizations, of which, only a few hundred survived the childhood diseases that we face now on Earth, and still exist. But these civilizations have not arisen simultaneously. The first may have been born a billion years ago, or even earlier. Therefore in our Galaxy, the surviving civilizations have appeared, most likely, one in a several million years. So, they are far apart from us not only in space, but also in time.

What will become of our civilization (if it will survive) over millions (or billions) of years? How would the inhabitants of a civilization that has outstripped us with millions of years look like? It is impossible for us to imagine. We can accept however that they have been transformed into something else, beyond our understanding; into something we can name as a “hypercivilization”.

If somebody considers that we were too optimistic and the intelligent beings are much scarcer, we should add that our Milky Way is only one of at least 150 billion, more or less similar, galaxies of the Universe accessible to our instruments. And we have strong reasons to believe that there are other Universes too, maybe “parallel” ones, maybe from other states of matter, or parts of a “Multiverse” etc. Therefore it is almost absolutely sure that in the Cosmos there are hypercivilisations.

School and science fiction, but not only, set our minds on patterns ignoring completely the possibility of hypercivilizations. There is a primitive extraterrestrial hypothesis, which assumes that all cosmic civilizations are more or less at the same level with us. Therefore it nurtures some false preconceptions as: very long and difficult cosmic voyages, landing on the lawn of White House, equal rights, conversation, invasion, intervention, aid, and so on.

This primitive view is completely implausible. If hypercivilizations exist (and they exist, with a probability of 99.999999…%) they exploited, in the smallest detail, our Galaxy, millions of years ago, so they have known, for a long time, about our existence. A difference of millions of years, or even hundreds of millions, is as huge as between us and a lizard or even an ant. If an entomologist would propose to study an anthill, he will try to disturb, as little as possible, its life. He could of course make experiments, examining or modifying some ants, or even taking them in remote laboratories, trying to create new “races” and so on, but will not “present credentials” to the queen of the ants. If the entomologist have the technology, he will create some robot ants, sending them in to the hill and watching from a safe place, for example “on the computer screen”, the data transmitted by them. Hypercivilizations might treat us in a similar way. Therefore no settlement, no destruction, on one hand and no official contact, conversation or substantial help, on the other hand, are to be expected from highly advanced cosmic civilisations, even if they are here now.

The arising of a technological civilization could be a very rare event in our Galaxy, occurring probably once in several millions of years. So it is normal for us to be of interest to the higher intelligences. But they will forbid any aid. This is not, only, because of human aggressiveness and xenophobia, making from all new technology new weapons, nor only to avoid a “cultural shock”, which could virtually destroy all our social, scientific, religious, economical, political, military and cultural structures. I suppose they have also some other reasons for that. Hypercivilisations could wait (and maybe harvest even now) our original ideas, viewpoints, creations (in art, science, philosophy, ethics etc.), or something else, produced as a result of millions of years of our independent evolution. And all that expected crop could be destroyed by a premature contact. Some old, apparently absurd, stories may be an indication of such an attitude: the punishment for the apple of the forbidden tree of knowledge, the chaining of Prometheus, or the fallen angels (from Book of Enoch), thrown into a pit full of fire, because they were taught earthlings different skills.

The higher intelligences may gather and store our lives in a kind of virtual reality; this could explain: channelling, “xenoglossia”, “walk-ins”, “reincarnation”, ghosts, etc. In such a super-memory it is possible to travel in the past, without changing the real past, or to see scenarios of the future (sometimes apocalyptical), without accepting fatality.

Of course, all the above is not a proof that the hypercivilisations are the explanation for everything strange and particularly for UFOs. It is only one hypothesis; but one which cannot be easily discarded. And we can speculate even further, supposing for example that the spiritual world was before, or that the material world is only a kind of a great virtual reality and so on. Also, the whole Universe (or rather the “Multiverse”) could be much older and much more complex than the part we can observe with our instruments. Was there something before the “Big Bang”? What is beyond the limits of our closed Universe (maybe in another dimension or another reality, maybe in a spiritual state of matter)?

RL: In your opinion, how do we keep moving forward with UFO research?

DF: UFOs exist! To understand them, first of all, we have to collect facts, focusing on the sincerity of the witnesses and on the honesty of the ufologists, avoiding: tricksters, deception, exaggeration, inventions, misinterpretation of natural phenomena, or of man-made vehicles, as well as deceptive mental phenomena.

In the same time, we have not to forget the great distance from reality to the stories reported about it, interposing (unconsciously!) images seen elsewhere, perhaps in a dream, screen memories, all embellished, filtered, rearranged in a logical and socially convenient order, to match beliefs or prejudices, self delusions, wishful thinking, compulsions or even sexual fantasies, all deeply embedded into the subconscious. These mechanisms are acquired starting with our earliest moments of life and continuing with language, family, religion, environment, social pressure, school, science, media etc. This can change completely what we perceive. Of course, that does not mean the witnesses have not seen anything! Behind their stories, most (if not all) of them went through real and strange experiences.

The scientific method brings additional issues. Science admits only truths that: persist over time and can be inspected by any interested person, possibly in an experiment. Often science also demands that the observations be quantifiable. But, around us, there are so many phenomena which do not meet these conditions. Sometimes we are “culturally hypnotized” to not see them.

Science often speaks of “laws of nature”. We do not know any of these laws, but only the laws of Newton, Maxwell, Einstein, etc. which are “falsifiable”, as underlined epistemologist Karl Popper. So statements like: “it was scientifically proven that X can not exist”, or “that Y must exist”, have no logical foundation. An example is that classical: “it is scientifically impossible, therefore please do not bother me with alleged facts”.

Ufology can not be entirely a science; it can not bring abductions in to the laboratory, nor can it present a UFO, on demand, to any sceptic. But the fact that ufology is not a science does not diminish its importance and also it would be desirable to not diminish its respectability. When people from different countries, cultures and religions, with different backgrounds and occupations, are reporting the same story, with dozens of details that are consistent – despite the fact that these persons have never known each other and have not read any of the dedicated UFO literature – that means we face no more a fantasy or pure coincidences but a real phenomenon. Applying appropriate statistical operations, ufology can try to strip the primary perception of observations by the many cultural veils placed on it, even if this endeavour will never be perfect.

In conclusion, UFO research should concentrate on: gathering as more testimonies as possible, developing methods of removing cultural filtering, and using good statistical instruments.

Another issue is that science is not the only way of knowing, even if it claims that. Science, religions, folklore, paranormal studies, ufology etc. touch, each by its own means and in its “light zone”, an extremely complex reality; and often one part denies the truths of the others. To overcome this limitation, we all must learn, in a pluralistic approach, to respect all truths, as long as we cannot refute them, by obvious facts, not only by theories. Therefore we all should accept the truths of others, even if they contradict our own truths. And we should remain always open to dialogue. It is the only way to ascend to the higher truths we are searching for.

UFO Sightings 2017: Does Anyone Really Think Trump Could Keep Aliens A Secret?

Donald Trump and his administration are not good at keeping secrets. Gossip leaks constantly. He’s cavalier in handling classified documents. Members of his administration have shared classified information with other countries. He may be able to fend off investigation of his tax returns, but that’s just Republican stonewalling— he’s a transparent liar on the subject. Trump’s favorite secret is the one he can simultaneously affirm and withhold, like his plan to defeat ISIS in 30 days, or the “we are going to attack Mosul in four months” examplehe used to mock the idea of revealing any military policy whatsoever to the public. He would like it known that he holds the secrets. So how is it that he hasn’t tweeted something like “Don’t believe the main stream media. White House is running VERY WELL. They share all UFO secrets with me. Fake media not happy!”?

Amateur and professional UFO organizations alike have a shared political issue. They call it Disclosure. Disclosure can mean the release of newly declassified documents or testimony from former military officials, but it’s most often meant in a grander sense: the federal government revealing the existence of extraterrestrials on or in contact with Earth and the unveiling of their advanced technologies. It would be more than just validation of the UFO phenomena, but the beginning of a societal revolution, reordered around the advanced alien energy technologies the government currently holds in secret.

The most prominent expression of this united demand was the The Disclosure Project, which began in 1993 by lobbying the Clinton Administration, culminating in 1997 hearings from government and military UFO witnesses meant to push the government into open congressional hearings. None followed.

Since then they’ve re-targeted the bulk of their effort on collection and archiving, recording testimony from “scores of military, government and other witnesses to Unidentified Flying Objects and Extraterrestrial events and projects from around the world.” But hope renews every campaign season. There’s always the possibility that the next president will be the one willing to Disclose.

Though UFO hunters come from across the political spectrum, the Clintons have been major figures in the Disclosure discussion, largely thanks to Bill Clinton Chief of Staff and Hillary Clinton Campaign Chairman John Podesta, who has long been the most prominent Disclosure advocate in the country. Though he had failed to get files pertaining to UFOs and Area 51 disclosed during the first Clinton administration, he promised to pry them out of the second. Hillary was even asked about it on the campaign trail.

Trump is much more of an unknown quantity. The consensus on r/UFO seems to be that Disclosure is unlikely, while Disclosure lobbyist Stephen Bassett made a last-ditch effort to push the Justice Department into disclosing during Obama’s lame duck period, before the unpredictable new administration clamped whatever narrow possibility existed.

But now Trump is president and it seems like we hear everything they so much as chat about, from internal clashes between Steve Bannon and Reince Preibus to Trump’s TV fixation. Multiple drafts of every new executive order leak beforehand. It’s hard to imagine Trump learning about aliens without Bannon learning about aliens and using it in his ongoing pee fight with Jared Kushner.

So maybe he doesn’t know. Multiple intelligence community sources have said information is being withheld from Trump out of fear that it could endanger classified sources or leak to Russian intelligence groups. Disclosure could lie in unseen hands.

This is the theory mostly widely accepted in the UFO community generally. Just as with most other demographics and segments of the population, UFO hunters are condemnatory of government generally. We don’t trust it. Mat Baroudi summarizes the position neatly in the CNN segment above:

“I don’t think any presidential candidate is going to come out with the truth. It’s always behind close doors. The other thing too is the people who are running those opps circumnavigate the president. The president is just here to lead the country, or appear to lead the country. But I think that these people who are running this stuff are an entity on to themselves.”

So either Trump has become uncharacteristically good at keeping the best secrets without bragging about them, or the presidency is no longer an office in the loop.

There’s also the possibility most UFO hunters are beyond considering: if there is a genuine extraterrestrial UFO phenomenon, the government is unaware. There are multiple chapters in the FBI’s history akin to X-Files, though most are hidden more from embarrassment and chronic over-classification than because they hide a radically different interplanetary world order. The weight of thousands of sightings, including government documentation, preclude this possibility for most, a view shared with the 12% of Americans who believe in a government cover-up of aliens (a 1997 poll measured it at 37%, but asks a more open question). We might all be in the cosmic dark.

Pupils saw a UFO over Wawne Primary School

A UFO investigator is seeking witnesses to a 'flying saucer' reportedly seen by a group of children above an East Riding primary school.

On Friday, November 18, 1977, about 20 pupils of Wawne Primary School - aged six and seven - said they had seen a strange object.

The sighting featured on the front page of the Hull Daily Mail, with head teacher Michael Yates saying at the time: "I was talking to my wife when three children from her class rushed in and said they had seen something silvery in the sky."

Mr Yates had suggested that the children went away to draw or paint the object from memory.

"They decided to make Plasticine models," said Mr Yates. "And the odd thing is that these look very similar although the children had no opportunity to copy from each other."

The models depicted an upside plate with a mound on top - a classic flying saucer.

Now, Chris Evers, editor of the UFO magazine Outer Limits, is investigating the sighting, and is appealing for help from Mail readers.

He said: "I am trying to contact any of the witnesses to this event, as this year is 40 years since they experienced this sighting."

Mr Evers is particularly interested in hearing from a Lisa Pattison, who was then aged seven and of Church Crescent, Wawne, Claire Swift, Michael Yates and his wife Joyce.

"I do realise, of course, that the teachers may no longer be with us," he said.

Mr Evers said the sighting may feature in a convention, called 70 Years of the Modern UFO Era, that will take place on September 9 at the Freedom Centre, in Preston Road, east Hull.

His interest in all things extra-terrestrial was sparked in February 1974, when he saw strange light patterns, also in the skies above Bransholme.

"I saw two, bright lights leapfrogging each other in the sky," he previously told the Mail. "At that time, you'd often see aircraft flying over Bransholme - but they didn't move like an aircraft."

The mainstream press could miss the full significance of that revelation, he said, but he implored those watching the video who are a part of the UFO-hunting community to take "read between the lines" of what is announced.

There’s a lot that I can’t say, but there’s some that I can," he said in the speech. And I’m so appreciative that I’ve been acknowledged for this stuff, but I’m not done.

"I’m just like you guys. I spent 20 years up all night, reading about Roswell, Dulce, Serpo, Churchill, the crashes here, Nazis building craft there, Antarctica, what’s on Mars, what’s on the back of the moon, anomalous structures. I mean, I’ve done it all. I know it all. I read all the same authors as you guys, hundreds of books. I look at all the same sites. I listen to all the Coast To Coast stuff that you guys do. I’m the same.

"But I kind of used some of my notoriety to try to do something pretty ambitious, and it worked," he said, apparently referencing the upcoming announcement.

"I came out and told you guys about a book I was writing called Sekret Machines, and I said a bunch of stuff, that I was working with some people. Well, I think a lot of people doubted it, and they thought it was crazy that this musician would have this kind of access. And then the WikiLeaks thing happened, and you guys saw that I’m into some serious shit, and I’m making really good progress."

Those WikiLeaks emails brought much of Mr Delonge's work to the fore, and showed that he had consulted with Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta on his work. Mr Delonge said in the messages that he had been talking to high-ranking officials in the US government.
