Red Planet versus Dead Planet: Scientists Debate Next Destination for Astronauts in Space
Red Planet versus Dead Planet: Scientists Debate Next Destination for Astronauts in Space
By Leonard David, Scientific American
Where in the solar system will humans go next? NASA and private industry are mulling whether astronauts should first go back to the moon—or instead voyage directly to Mars. A near-Earth asteroid could be a third possible destination for near-future human missions.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas—Should the U.S. send humans back to the moon in a 21st-century reboot of the cold war–era Apollo program … or should the nation go full-throttle and for the gusto, sending crews to all the way to Mars, where none have gone before? U.S. scientists and policy makers have grappled ad nauseam with America's next great otherworldly destination for decades, without making much meaningful progress. Now that it is approaching a half-century since an American — or anyone at all, for that matter — last left low Earth orbit, the debate seems lost in space.
Soon that shall change, many advocates of human spaceflight believe, through a hybrid of new initiatives by Pres. Donald Trump's administration as well as commercial efforts led by private industry. The Trump White House's vision for U.S. astronauts remains at present a foggy TBD, but there are plans afoot to relaunch a National Space Council. Helmed by Vice Pres. Mike Pence, the council would set a new space agenda not only for NASA but also for U.S. rocket companies, big and small, such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Orbital ATK.
In the meantime, speculation about the U.S.'s future in space has reached its highest point in recent memory, as made clear here last week by the proceedings of the 48th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC). At the meeting, scientists unleashed the latest findings regarding Earth's moon, Mars, asteroids, comets and myriad other cosmic objects of interest, often with a hopeful eye toward rekindling human voyages to other worlds. Although robotic probes are the persistent currency of discovery in today's planetary science, many researchers increasingly see astronauts as crucial agents of exploration in the not-too-distant future.
Destination Moon
"Planetary science will completely change once we get crew beyond low Earth orbit," says David Kring, a senior staff scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute. "The best way to explore the moon is by the well-trained astronaut, hands down. Apollo demonstrated that wonderfully."
Kring says he is eager to see the first NASA exploration missions using the agency's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which is currently being developed along with a crewed Orion spacecraft. At the Trump administration's insistence, NASA is assessing the prospect of flying a two-person crew around the moon in mid-2019 — years ahead of schedule for the delay-plagued SLS and Orion programs. "I'm even more anxious to see crews deploy robotic assets to the lunar surface and eventually land there themselves," Kring adds. "We need to get back on the surface. We need to collect samples. And we need to bring them back to Earth."
A Scientific Bonanza
The moon is a bonanza for scientists, Kring says, because it offers crucial insights for understanding the origins and evolution of Earth and other planets: how they formed from the accretion and differentiation of smaller bodies; how they were bombarded by impacts early in their histories; and even how some of them migrated in their orbits around the sun. "The best place to answer those questions is on the moon," he explains, given that its airless surface contains the scarcely altered imprints of 4.5 billion years of solar system history.
You can't be a Martian without being a lunatic, suggests Clive Neal, a lunar scientist at the University of Notre Dame.

Here on Earth destructive geologic processes cloud our view of those long-gone formative eons, Kring says. Even on modern-day Mars, a planet far more inert than Earth, many of the answers we might seek to our solar system's deepest mysteries have been erased by the slow workings of geology.
Kring also sees the moon as a gateway to Mars. "We have to have legitimate, meaningful milestones on our way to Mars," he explains. "We all want to get humans on Mars. The question is how do you get there? I don't think we're going to develop the right workforce with the capabilities to magically get to Mars by 2035 or 2045. We need to develop the techniques and the workforce for that leap, and that can happen in [lunar orbit] and on the moon."
Every Martian is a Lunatic
According to Clive Neal, a lunar scientist at the University of Notre Dame, any moon-versus-Mars argument is a nonstarter. "It's not either-or," he says, because the moon can enable Mars by tapping lunar resources to support a sustainable human expansion deeper into the solar system.
"You can't be a Martian without being a lunatic," Neal says. "If you want to do 'flags and footprints,' go to Mars now. But you'll never go back, because that's Apollo — a fantastic program, but it was not sustainable."
To Neal, Earth's satellite is first and foremost a world rich in resources that can and should be used. For example, he pointed to sun-shy craters at the lunar poles, where near-constant darkness has trapped and preserved water ice ripe for conversion into oxygen, water and rocket propellant. "We have to do some basic geologic prospecting," he says. "And if the moon's resources are shown to be substantial, "you then bring the Moon into our economic sphere of influence. I view the moon as enabling, and that comes through its resources."
Apollo Dreams
Speaking at a breakout session prior to the formal start of the LPSC gathering last week, Apollo 17 moon walker and geologist Jack Schmitt reflected on the value of human exploration of the moon. It had been nearly 45 years since Schmitt bunny-hopped his way across the low-gravity lunar landscape in December 1972 during the final Apollo mission; half of Apollo’s 12 moon walkers have now died. With the passing of his Apollo 17 crewmate, Gene Cernan, earlier this year, Schmitt spoke as the last living person from that mission to have set foot on the moon.
Schmitt's speech raised issues familiar to many in the audience. For decades, he has championed the potential economics of lunar mining for helium 3, an isotope that could be crucial for certain forms of nuclear fusion. The lunar surface has soaked up vast quantities of helium 3 from billions of years of bombardment by the solar wind, Schmitt explained, and drawing on that resource is how a lunar settlement could support itself. Provided, that is, that scientists back on Earth can first figure out how to make nuclear fusion an economically viable power source — a goal that has eluded them for decades.
Schmitt's faith in a lunar future for humankind is unwavering. "A settlement on the Moon based on helium 3 export to Earth for fusion power makes a lot of sense to me. It starts not only to make us a two-planet species but enables, I think, Mars exploration in many different ways," he noted.

For example, he said, helium 3 mining would produce by-products including water, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen. These useful substances exist in only the most minuscule traces in lunar soil — but such an enormous amount of surface material would have to be processed to harvest helium 3 that they would accumulate in significant amounts. Water sourced from the low-gravity moon, Schmitt explained, could be utilized as a protective, radiation-thwarting cocoon, built into the superstructures of Mars-bound crewed spacecraft. "A few inches of water around a spacecraft weights an awful lot and it is expensive bringing it from Earth. You can produce water anywhere on the moon," he said.
Red Planet Runs
Others have little time for the moon and the decades that would be required to develop infrastructure there. Their eyes are instead on the bigger prize: Mars. Elon Musk, SpaceX's CEO and chief rocketeer, is the foremost example of the "Mars first" contingent. And according to SpaceX engineer Paul Wooster, Red Planet planning by Musk's private company is steadily progressing. "The vision for SpaceX, long-term, is making it possible for large numbers of people to go to Mars," he says.
SpaceX plans to build a mega-rocket and a giant interplanetary crew transporter to populate Martian outposts and eventually a full-size city, Wooster reports. But before the company can achieve those wild goals it must first firm up its capability to send something — anything at all — to Mars. That would come via interplanetary flights of the firm's Red Dragon spacecraft — a derivative of the SpaceX Dragon capsule that has already hauled cargo to the International Space Station and in due course will take astronauts there. Wooster says SpaceX is intent on rapidly building up surface infrastructure on Mars, hopefully beginning by the mid-2020s. "We obviously have a lot of work ahead of us," he says.
A crucial component of the SpaceX plan for Mars has been demonstrated several times here on Earth. The company has repeatedly landed its Falcon 9 rocket's first stage at sea on a drone ship, and on land at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Because the first stage can then be repeatedly reused rather than flown once and discarded, an economy of scale could develop that greatly reduces the cost of access to space, and thus the price tag of a bank-busting plan to colonize Mars. For SpaceX's ambitious plans to work, the company will have to develop and demonstrate reusability on its next generation of rockets poised to debut after Falcon 9.
Wooster says an unpiloted SpaceX Red Dragon flight to Mars, able to deliver roughly one ton of useful payload, is being considered for 2020. Other Red Dragons could follow every two years or so, when Mars and Earth are in favorable alignments that minimize the fuel needed for an interplanetary crossing.

SpaceX Marks the Spot
"First and foremost is to learn how to land large payloads on Mars," Wooster says. In preparation for planting an outpost on that far-off world, experiments onboard Red Dragon are set to test on-the-spot propellant production. That can be done, he says, by processing water from Mars' surface and with gases extracted from the carbon dioxide–rich atmosphere. In fact, NASA is also set to try out something similar — a Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) on the space agency's Mars 2020 rover.
SpaceX has been quietly working with NASA and non-NASA landing site specialists to plot locales for plopping down its spacecraft. Site selection is driven by the quantity of water the firm is looking for — thousands of tons, Wooster explains. One such spot "is looking quite promising," he says: Arcadia Planitia, a smooth plain on Mars that appears to have large quantities of ice near the surface.
Of course, where there is ice there may well be subsurface pockets of liquid water — and potentially life, raising the possibility that SpaceX could violate "planetary protection" protocols by landing in such regions. Wooster says SpaceX is working with NASA's Office of Planetary Protection to properly address such concerns. For now, he reiterates that the company is most definitely open for business and eager to entice researchers to make use of Red Dragon for toting their experiments. "SpaceX is a transportation company," Wooster explains. "We're very happy to deliver payloads to Mars for various people," he adds, an offer that has also piqued NASA's interest in contracting with the company to launch a potential science experiment in 2020. "We want to turn this into a steady cadence where we are sending [Red] Dragons to Mars based on every opportunity as we go forward, and eventually shifting over to our large Mars vehicle to deliver very large payloads," he concludes.
Be it back to the moon or first footfalls on Mars, the trajectory taken by the U.S. appears to have the research community in ready-and-waiting mode. Whether it comes via government-backed public-private partnerships, international collaboration or go-it-alone endeavors by the only nation to have landed astronauts on the moon, there is plenty of extraterrestrial science that can — and will — be done, potentially even by humans.
Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory are developing an array of robotic ice tools that may help uncover the frozen secrets of alien worlds. As part of the Ocean Worlds Mobility and Sensing study, each of these tools has been designed to collect samples from above or below the surface of icy moons such as Jupiter’s Europa.
“In the future, we want to answer the question of whether there is life on the moons of the outer planets — on Europa, Enceladus and Titan,” Tom Cwik, who leads JPL’s Space Technology Program, said in a news release. “We’re working with NASA headquarters to identify the specific systems we need to build now, so that in 10 or 15 years, they could be ready for a spacecraft.”
Liquid water offers one of our best bets for discovering extraterrestrial life. But, on an icy world, we’ll have to dig deep to access it.
Among the new tools are wheels that enable rovers to navigate icy terrain, a folding arm that can stretch 33 feet to grab samples at a distance, and a projectile launcher than can shoot a sampling probe up to 164 feet.
Engineers have also adapted methods used on Earth, such as “melt probes,” which melt through snow and ice to help scientists study the regions below. But, since melt probes tend to be inefficient, they would freeze up long before they dug all the way through Europa’s crust, which is somewhere between 6.2 and 12.4 miles deep. JPL engineering fellow Brian Wilcox devised a new tool that uses a vacuum-insulated capsule to retain its energy with a big chunk of heat-source plutonium. A rotating saw blade attached to the bottom is used to grind through the ice.
“We think there are glacier-like ice flows deep within Europa’s frozen crust,” Wilcox said. “Those flows churn up material from the ocean down below. As this probe tunnels into the crust, it could be sampling waters that may contain biosignatures, if any exist.”
IT has been a source of mystery for generations – but what IS on the dark side of the moon?
Planet Earth only gets to see one side of the giant space rock, and what lies on the other half is unknown.
Now a UFO enthusiast has claimed aliens are living in a supermassive network of tunnels and caves on our moon.
NASA
HIDDEN: The Dark Side of the Moon is hidden from the Earth's view - is it holding THIS secret?
He suspects they are thriving in underground cities covering the mysterious "dark side" – which can never be seen from Earth.
And now he has “evidence” in astonishing images from a lost lunar spaceship which has been found orbiting the moon after going missing eight years ago.
The images, from Chandrayaan-1, appear to show a network of lava tubes snaking under the surface of the satellite, with thousands of caves scattered all over.
It was created by streams of magma which ran dry, but now Jesse – who runs YouTube channel UFO News – believes they are homing an entire civilisation.
NASA
OUT OF VIEW: The 'Dark Side' was pictured for the first time – by the Russians – in 1959
“An alien civilisation could be living much closer to home that we previously thought”
Jesse, alien investigator
“The presence of enormous caves on the moon suggests that an alien civilisation could be living much closer to home that we previously thought,” the alien enthusiast told Daily Star Online.
“We find it fascinating that an extensive network of caves and tunnels, some of which are large enough to house entire cities, are covering the surface of the moon.
“Why is it that these caves have slipped under the radar of public interest for so long? Is it possible that NASA could be privately discouraging the exploration of these structures in order to suppress public interest?
“NASA has admitted that these caves could be used as potential locations for a human colony on the moon. It makes us wonder if they might have already investigated them without public knowledge?"
NASA
ALIEN CITIES: It is claimed extra terrestrial life is lurking in underground tunnels
It is a known fact that craters are covering the moon, and have been created by meteorites that have peppered its surface.
But conspiracy theorists like Jesse believe the aliens are hiding out on the shadows there, and in the tunnels which connect to them.
“Prior to the invention of satellites, the dark side of the moon would have been a convenient location for an alien civilisation to live and remain hidden from view,” he told us.
“As our technology evolves, such a civilisation would likely be forced to use new tactics to remain hidden.
“These caves and tunnels would make the perfect location for an alien civilisation to take refuge from the prying eyes of humanity."

HIDING: Jesse suspects the aliens are hiding from us in the shadows of these craters
The "far side of the moon" which Jesse believes is inhabited by extra terrestrial life has long been dubbed the "dark side".
This is because it can never be seen from our planet, as it spins at the same rate as it orbits the Earth, meaning it is kept hidden from our view.
It was only pictured for the first time – by the Russians – in 1959.
Jesse told us: “Many of these massive caves reside on the dark side of the moon, out of view of ground based telescopes.
“Buried deep within the ground, the caves offer protection from the sun and the harsh realities of space.
“In our most recent video on UFO News we included pictures of what appear to be the surface marks of these tunnels crisscrossing the surface.
NASA
PROOF? Jesse says the evidence lie in pictures like these of the tunnels and craters
“These well established pictures serve as new evidence that a super highway of interconnected lava tubes are being used as a highway system to allow an alien civilisation to move about the moon undetected.
“Until NASA is willing to do some direct investigation of these objects using high definition cameras, we are going to take their silence as a nod in the direction that aliens are indeed on the moon.”
The cube-sized satellite where the new images of the moon have come from first went missing in 2009, after being successfully launched in October 2008.
It is roughly the size of a smart car, measuring 1.5 metres tall on each side, and had completed 3,400 orbits around the moon when, less than a year later, radio contact was lost.
But this year it was announced the probe has been found orbiting 200 kilometres above the lunar surface by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

LOST SPACESHIP: This is the eerie picture of the dark side of the moon from the missing probe
Jesse's suspicions come 10 years after the "Apollo 20 hoax" - which saw claims that NASA carried out a secret lunar mission.
Videos surfaced on YouTube from a user claiming to be a retired American astronaut who commandered the mission.
The clips appeared to show proof of the existence of intelligence, alien life on the moon, and included a picture of a female alien - nicknamed Mona Lisa - hibernating.
But all the videos were posted on the video sharing site on April 1 - April Fools' Day - hinting the story was nothing more than an elaborate prank.

BY BEN GUARINO
The Washington Post
Of all the pop-punk bands to emerge in the 1990s, few achieved success like Blink-182. Massive hits like "What's My Age Again?" and "All the Small Things" fueled its distinct brand of cheery-cum-snotty adolescence. By October 2001, the band could draw 15,000 eager fans to Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion. There the crowd watched as Blink-182, then composed of Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker and Tom DeLonge, performed in front of a giant four-letter word set ablaze.
But all flaming swear signs must burn out. The band went on hiatus between 2005 and 2009. In 2015, four years after the New York Times declared that, "no punk band of the 1990s has been more influential than Blink-182," guitarist and vocalist DeLonge walked away. Hoppus and Barker, in a statement to Rolling Stone, said that DeLonge had left Blink-182 "indefinitely." The band continued without him.
A different kind of stardom - space, and the aliens who lived there - seduced DeLonge.
Now 41, DeLonge has found success in his post-punk pursuit. In February, the Arizona-based International UFO Congress, which each year holds the largest convention of UFO investigators in the world, awarded DeLonge its UFO researcher of the year award. In March, DeLonge published a book, "Sekret Machines: Gods, Man, & War," with occult historian Peter Levenda. The book, DeLonge said, marked the first nonfiction entry in a sweeping project that includes science-fiction novels, concept albums and movies.
All of those works are related, in one way or another, to a subject DeLonge calls "the Phenomenon."
More than 20 years of research and reflection led to the new book. DeLonge's perspective turned to the heavens in early adolescence, he told The Washington Post in a recent phone interview, after witnessing the conflict between his mother, a devout Christian, and his father, who was "not religious at all." He began to wonder if something sinister was at work.
"I realized early on there was something odd with the human life experience," Delonge said. "There's all these wars. I had a really difficult, broken family. I got kicked out of high school."
DeLonge's phenomenon is a grand unified theory of extraterrestrial encounters. It encompasses virtually all aspects of human culture, including religion, technology, media and science. "It is the UFO phenomenon, to be sure, but that is a box too small to contain it in all its glory," DeLonge and Levenda wrote in their new book, "as no two experts can agree on what it is." In "Sekret Machines," a metaphor for the phenomenon emerges: the human experience as cargo cult.
During World War II, indigenous tribes in the South Pacific, who rarely interacted with outsiders, observed planes airdropping food and medicine. "To this day there are religions based on worshiping those planes," DeLonge said, "because they did not know what they were."
There is no question that cargo cults have existed on our planet. One group of villagers in the Vanuatu islands honor a holy savior named John Frum, the spirit of an American who lives in a nearby volcano. (It has been speculated that the name John Frum came from World War II soldiers who greeted the villagers, saying, "I'm John from America.")
"John promised he'll bring planeloads and shiploads of cargo to us from America if we pray to him," one village elder told a Smithsonian magazine reporter who visited the island in 2006. "Radios, TVs, trucks, boats, watches, iceboxes, medicine, Coca-Cola and many other wonderful things."
Similar events happened on an interplanetary scale, DeLonge said. "Whether it is Joseph Smith meeting an angel and forming the Mormon religion, or it's the star of Bethlehem or light hovering over a manger," he said, "what happens is, is people see these things and they create religions off of them. We wanted to say, 'Well, hey, we are all some form of a cargo cult.' The question is, why?"
DeLonge's book will not convince any skeptics about the reality of aliens. Sufficient evidence already exists, DeLonge told The Post, citing the scale of the universe. "There are trillions of galaxies," he said. "There's trillions of planets within each galaxy, and people go, 'Are we alone?' " DeLonge dismissed his own question with a word Blink-182 once set on fire.
He also had little time for those who doubt whether aliens had visited Earth. "It's all out there already," DeLonge said. "It's so frustrating when people say they're waiting for some big person to say something. Well, there's been a hundred books, national press events in District of Columbia, meetings in Congress and multi-star generals on the record."
There is no evidence of contact between aliens and humans, according to scientific consensus. "At the moment, life on Earth is the only known life in the universe, but there are compelling arguments to suggest we are not alone," astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson wrote in 2003.
When Bill Clinton was president, he denied that the White House had proof of aliens. "No, as far as I know, an alien spacecraft did not crash in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947," Clinton said during a 1995 speech while in Ireland, responding to a letter sent by Ryan, a 13-year-old resident of Belfast. "And Ryan, if the United States Air Force did recover alien bodies, they didn't tell me about it, either, and I want to know."
(As recently as Monday, scientists publicly dismissed the idea. "I do not believe that anyone from outer space has ever visited the Earth," said Alan Bean, 85, the fourth person to walk on the Moon, to an Australian newspaper.)
In his search for information, DeLonge said he made his way into upper echelons of the American government. In October, the Wall Street Journal reported that DeLonge corresponded with John Podesta, the chair for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, according to emails WikiLeaks had released; Podesta, for his part, has frequently advocated for the United States to declassify any information regarding Area 51 or other UFO incidents.
It took DeLonge a year, but he managed to set up "very high level meetings" with members of the Defense Department, he said. "And I got to the people that are in charge of this stuff." He declined to confirm to The Washington Post whether he had met with Podesta or any specific government officials. "I can't comment on who I met with," he said, "or what those meetings were about."
A Defense Department spokesman said in an email to The Washington Post that neither the Defense Department's Community Relations nor the Air Force had records of such a meeting. The spokesman "did see one open source story that named generals who supposedly worked with Mr. DeLonge." Both of the generals mentioned had retired, the representative said, the first in October 2013 and the other in June of 2014.
Several scientists involved in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, are optimistic that any alien life advanced enough to happen upon Earth would also be benevolent. "I doubt aliens would drop what they're doing to come over here and wipe out Clapham Junction - why would they do that?" Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in California, told the Guardian in July. "They probably have what we have at home - except for our culture, maybe they are big Cliff Richard fans or like our reality television."
But DeLonge's air of secrecy - and the government's - stemmed from the danger that alien contact posed, the former Blink-182 guitarist said. It was a pessimistic view of alien intelligence, a fear shared by physicist Stephen Hawking (though Hawking still supports SETI initiatives such as Breakthrough Listen). DeLonge had been "briefed on things" that caused him to lose sleep "for multiple days on end," he said. "Because it really, really threw me down the stairs."
DeLonge's view was not completely dour, however. Far from it. He said that exposing the phenomenon as a malevolent extraterrestrial influence would persuade humans around the world to cooperate. He likened current global conflicts to someone incorrectly fighting a fire. "When I was in high school, I wanted to be a firefighter. I learned that y ou spray the base of the flame. You squirt water on the fuel, not the flame itself," DeLonge said.
"I feel that lot of the fighting taking place across the world, when we drop bombs - that's spraying on the flames. The fuel of all these wars are our belief systems. And the sooner we attack that," he said, "that we've been duped about our belief systems, maybe we'll start to realize we're much more connected."

Annual Canadian UFO report released with only 4 per cent of sightings unexplained
In total, there were 1,131 sightings of unidentified flying objects reported across Canada in 2016.

WINNIPEG—Bright lights, airplane near-misses and light-fingered aliens with a penchant for cool shades are all part of the annual report on UFO sightings in Canada.
The 2016 Canadian UFO Survey produced by Winnipeg-based Ufology Research was released this week. In total, there were 1,131 sightings of unidentified flying objects reported across Canada.
In a first for the 28 years the study has been conducted, only 4 per cent of the sightings could not be explained. Study author Chris Rutkowski said that record-low rating is likely the result of more careful scrutiny of raw report information available.
Summer is the big time of year for UFO sightings and mostly they were simply lights that people saw in the sky.
The provinces with the largest populations had the most reports, so Quebec led the country with 38.5 per cent of the sightings, while Ontario had 26 per cent and British Columbia had 17 per cent.
The most popular shape of UFO reported in 2016 was a simple point source of light (57 per cent). Other shapes reported were triangle (4 per cent), ball (9 per cent), cigar (3 per cent) and fireball (5 per cent). The classic “flying saucer” was only reported 48 times.
As for what the study calls “unknowns,” they included such cases as the “gigantic, disc-shaped object with searchlights” that was seen moving over the mountains in North Vancouver and the boomerang-shaped “cluster of stars” that moved across the sky near St. Thomas, Ont.
There was also the commercial airplane over Toronto that had a near miss with an object while on a routine flight on Nov. 14.
“The flight crew noticed an object directly ahead on their flight path. The object appeared to be solid, approximately five to eight feet in diameter and shaped like an upright doughnut or inner tube,” said the study.
“Cabin crew members received minor injuries when evasive action was taken. While the object was not likely a balloon and was suggested to be a drone, it was noted that drones could not fly at that altitude and distance.”
The study said the Transportation Safety Board ruled the incident as “a near collision with an unidentified airborne object.”
Close encounter cases are in the minority, but high on the strangeness scale.
Those included a man in Cornwall, P.E.I., who reported that a thin, six-foot-tall, long-fingered white alien in a black suit spoke to him in his bedroom before leaving by walking through a wall.
A man in Lanaudiere, Que., said he was transported into a field of plants and plunged into a bathtub “where he was surrounded by three green, big-eyed humanoid creatures who communicated with him telepathically.”
Not all close encounters are so dramatic, however. One person in Tecumseh, Ont., reported that an alien stole his sunglasses and belt, while someone from Rimouski, Que., filed a report which read simply: “They contacted me!”

NASA IS READY TO ANNOUNCE ALIEN LIFE: ALL PROTOCOLS ARE SET UP
In a universe that is practically infinite, it would be extremely egocentric of anyone to suggest that life on earth represents the only intelligent life in the universe. Many people, researchers included, pose the argument that in all these years of technological prosperity of the human civilization, no sign of life has been found in outer space despite the best efforts of organizations like SETI. This problem is further propounded with Drake’s Equation.
The Drake equation estimates, roughly, how many planets may be inhabited by intelligent life. It seeks to quantify the question, “Are we alone?” So far, the conclusion of the equation is that with so many habitable planets out there, it is astonishing that no contact has been established with extraterrestrial life in all of human history. Therefore, one must conclude that there is no intelligent extraterrestrial life in the universe.
There is one problem with the Drake Equation. The equation overestimates the human being’s competency in collecting data from space. Scientists, despite their admirable persistence and best efforts, have only been able to explore an infinitesimally small volume of the universe. The conclusion that humans have not discovered aliens yet means there are no aliens is analogous to the someone scooping up the ocean water in a glass and saying there are no whales in the ocean because none are swimming in their glass. With the recent discovery of the exoplanet system TRAPPIST - 1, the odds of finding life on other planets have never been higher. The question now arises about how one should contact an alien civilization if and when the presence of intelligent life has been established. The book by NASA titled ‘Archaeology, Anthropology and Interstellar Communication’ focuses on this scenario. It would be difficult to determine whether the aliens are peaceful or barbaric; whether they are conquerors or explorers; whether they relish human meat or not.
The “Hollywood scientist” Neil Degrasse Tyson posits that the human body is made up of the same matter that is abundant in the universe and it is unlikely that intelligent life did not come into existence on other planets. When coming in contact with such a civilization, the very first impediment is to find a common “language.” One can reasonably assume that aliens do not speak the tongue of humans. They might not use sound as their method of communication at all. The book by NASA tackles this issue and proposes some ways in which human beings could communicate with the aliens.
The question of whether or not we are alone is as old as time itself. The question should now be restated as whether or not we are going to ever come in contact with an alien civilization. And if we do, would we have found in them an ally or a foe?

NASA Admits: We’re in Contact With No Less Than 4 Different Alien Species (Just Forgot to Mention It)
NASA Admits: We’re in Contact With No Less Than 4 Different Alien Species (Just Forgot to Mention It)
Yes, you got that right – NASA admits that it’s in contact with alien species. They just forgot to mention it! Weird, right? Well, not really. Just take a look at the article below to find out more about this. According to the recent reports, Trish Chamberson, an official spokesperson from NASA has confirmed the existence of extra-terrestrial life and has claimed that aliens have been visiting planet Earth for thousands of years.
NASA SPOKESWOMAN CONFIRMS THE EXISTENCE OF ALIENS
This is how the story goes – during the two-hour briefing, Trish Chamberson, an official spokesperson from NASA, confirmed that a number of theories which had previously been dismissed as groundless speculation from fringe enthusiasts are actually grounded in reality. Trish Chamberson, an official spokesperson from NASA, also made various sensational allegations in the course of the interview, claiming that the alien species known as the Greys have been visiting Earth for thousands of years and that they may have had a hand in the construction of megastructures such as the ancient pyramids of Giza and various other buildings dotted around the world.
ALIEN CONTACT?
“There are so many films, documentaries and TV programs on aliens, that we thought everyone was aware of them by now.”
And, after that, Trish Chamberson went on to confirm various theories about alien mining operations in the solar system. She also says that one of the mines was on the far side of the Moon and that various planets in the solar system were being assessed for minerals. Trish also said that aliens have begun to mine Jupiter, which is why observers have been able to see several apparently new rings appearing around the gas giant.
“Sorry. We just kinda assumed everyone knew about it.”
This is also very important for you to know – she also alleged that NASA is in regular contact with no less than four different and entirely separate alien species from various locations in the galaxy. Trish Chamberson also mentioned that all contact with the alien species has been amicable. While the aliens have raised no serious bone of contention with humanity, she has alleged that they have expressed concern about the proliferation and testing of nuclear weapons which has serious consequences not only for life on Earth but for races of peoples all over the galaxy.
“The aliens are actually harmless and only interested in the planet’s natural resources.”
But, she didn’t confirm that alien species are responsible for the abductions of human beings. Yes, Chamberson mentioned that the aliens are completely harmless, and their only interest in Earth relates to the planet’s natural resources.
“We were so busy back-engineering their technology, we simply forgot all about it. They even have a base on the far side of the moon, and are currently mining several planets in our solar system for minerals. They’ve only started on Jupiter recently, hence the new rings around it. It’s all good though, they’re a nice enough bunch. They don’t talk much though, but always complaining about our Nuclear weapons, claiming they affect parallel universes every time they’re triggered.”
Franz Bauer of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago said: "Ever since discovering this source, we’ve been struggling to understand its origin.
“It’s like we have a jigsaw puzzle but we don’t have all of the pieces.”
The X-ray source, located in a region of the sky known as the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S), has remarkable properties.
Prior to October 2014, this source was not detected in X-rays, but then it erupted and became at least a factor of 1,000 brighter in a few hours.
After about a day, the source had faded completely below the sensitivity of Chandra.
Thousands of hours of legacy data from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes helped determine that the event likely came from a faint, small galaxy about 10.7 billion lightyears from Earth.
For a few minutes, the X-ray source produced a thousand times more energy than all the stars in this galaxy.
We may have observed a completely new type of cataclysmic event.
Kevin Schawinski
Two of the three main possibilities to explain the X-ray source invoke gamma-ray burst (GRB) events.
GRBs are jetted explosions triggered either by the collapse of a massive star or by the merger of a neutron star with another neutron star or a black hole.
If the jet is pointing towards the Earth, a burst of gamma rays is detected.
As the jet expands, it loses energy and produces weaker, more isotropic radiation at X-ray and other wavelengths.
Possible explanations for the CDF-S X-ray source, according to the researchers, are a GRB that is not pointed toward Earth, or a GRB that lies beyond the small galaxy.
A third possibility is that a medium-sized black hole swallowed a white dwarf star.
Co-author Ezequiel Treister, also of the Pontifical Catholic University, said: "None of these ideas fits the data perfectly.
“But then again, we’ve rarely if ever seen any of the proposed possibilities in actual data, so we don’t understand them well at all.”
The mysterious X-ray source was not seen at any other time during the two and a half months of exposure time Chandra has observed the CDF-S region, which has been spread out over the past 17 years.
Moreover, no similar events have yet to be found in Chandra observations of other parts of the sky.
If the X-ray source was caused by a GRB triggered by the merger of a neutron star with a black hole or another neutron star, then gravitational waves would also have been produced.
If such an event were to occur much closer to Earth, within a few hundred million light years, it may be detectable with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
A paper describing this result appears in the June 2017 issue of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and is available online.
Scientists are investigating if the most simplistic forms of alien life developed in vast oceans that once covered the Red Planet.
They believe if they did, there may still be survivors in water that has remained beneath the surface.
NASA made the announcement as it unveiled the results of studies into what exactly stripped Mars of its atmosphere which meant it could no longer hold the oceans like they are here on Earth.
The study found it had been systematically stripped of its atmosphere by solar winds in the early years of our solar system.
The research, published in journal Science today looked at data collected by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) space probe which is orbiting the planet.
A NASA spokesman said: "It's possible microbial life could have existed at the surface early in Mars’ history.
"As the planet cooled off and dried up, any life could have been driven underground or forced into rare surface oases."

As the planet cooled off and dried up, any life could have been driven underground or forced into rare surface oases.
NASA spokesman
Elsayed Talaat, MAVEN Program Scientist, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said: "This discovery is a significant step toward unraveling the mystery of Mars' past environments.“ “In a broader context, this information teaches us about the processes that can change a planet’s habitability over time.”
The researchers found that solar winds stripped Mars of noble gas argon and carbon dioxide (CO2).
The spokesman added: "CO2 is of interest because it is the major constituent of Mars' atmosphere and because it's an efficient greenhouse gas that can retain heat and warm the planet.”
The team made its estimate using data from the Martian upper atmosphere, which was collected by MAVEN's Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS).
This analysis included measurements from the Martian surface made by NASA's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on board the Curiosity rover.

DID ALIENS DISCOVER A NEW VACATION HOTSPOT? UFO REPORTS TAKE A DIP
DISCOVER A NEW VACATION HOTSPOT? UFO REPORTS TAKE A DIP

Could those pesky aliens have discovered better beaches on another planet? Maybe there was a galaxy-wide UFO recall and everyone’s in the shop getting upgraded flux capacitors. Domestic UFO reports for the first quarter 2017 are down a staggering 32 percent as compared to the previous five years, according to Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) Director of Research Robert Powell.
The MUFON witness database at mid-day March 31, 2017, is showing 992 UFO reports where the case occurred during January, February or March. During the five-year period 2012 through 2016 within the same three months, MUFON averaged receiving about 1,460 cases – showing a 32 percent dip in UFO reports.
“We have no current explanation on why the drop in UFO reports,” Powell said Friday afternoon. “One can speculate that people are seeing fewer UFOs or that they are just not reporting them.”
Powell pointed out the fact that mobile devices like tablets and smartphones recently overtook computers near the end of 2016.
"James Titcomb reporting for the Telegraph," Powell said, "reports that our mobile devices finally tipped the scale as far as how people are viewing and engaging with websites. The way people are viewing our UFO reporting document is now very challenging and must be upgraded to keep up with technology."
National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) Director Peter Davenport confirmed today that his witness database is experiencing the same drop.
"NUFORC averaged about 1,402 cases during the first quarters 2012 through 2016," Davenport said. "The first quarter 2017 is showing just 954 cases – about a 32 percent drop as well."
The two UFO databases often follow the same patterns.
“Peter and I have traded stats over the years,” reports MUFON Communications Director Roger Marsh. “If he calls and says he’s having a surge in reports in general, or with one particular shape, that wave is always mirrored in the MUFON database. While some people report into both databases, most reports are actually unique to the database. We’ve seen dips and highs in the past, and they usually run in two to three-month cycles.”
No one is ever quite sure why the rise and fall in UFO reports.
“There is a direct correlation between UFO television programming and UFO reporting,” MUFON Executive Director Jan C. Harzan said. “The shows apparently make people aware that they have a place to file a report. When one of our “Hangar 1” episodes is playing on the History channel – there is always an increase in reporting - although that surge does tend to be people recalling older cases.”
The top five reporting shapes in 2017 to date are Sphere (186), Star-like (106), Circle (100), Triangle (73) and Disc (64).
The top row are screen grabs from a video taken in January 2017 of a reported UFO over Liverpool, UK. The bottom row shows a very similar reported UFO in March 2017 over Gloucester, UK.
If some British tabloids are to be believed, UFOs have been lighting up the British skies these days, as if the night skies were an immense Christmas tree.
As reported in The Express, “thousands of people across the globe are seeing mysterious shape-shifting UFO.”
Of course, an unidentified flying object typically turns out to be something other than an ET spacecraft once we take a closer look. In this instance, on March 12, Rob Wheatman, a resident of Gloucester, captured an odd aerial phenomenon on video, as seen below.
“I saw it as a sparkling ‘star’ from the garden in Elmbridge, due south,” according to GloucesterLive. “What alerted me was an orange light that came from it and traveled at speed north east. I grabbed my video and luckily it has a 40x zoom and that’s when I got the images of the bizarre light you saw.”
While there doesn’t seem to be any outward appearance of fakery going on here, there tends to be an immediate attitude either on the part of individuals who offer alleged UFO videos or from media sources that have a tendency to stretch the idea of credulity with descriptions like “[t]his apparently intergalactic lightshow was filmed above Gloucester last night, and it’s got us, and the cameraman, baffled. What it shows is anyone’s guess...We’re pinning our money on aliens. Definitely aliens.”
Once again, let’s offer this reminder: The vast majority of UFO sightings are eventually explained as natural or man-made objects.
We consulted a photo analyst who was unimpressed with the sightings.
“In this Gloucester video, I noticed first that the object was not in focus. That’s why it looked like a diamond shape. This is a common appearance of out of focus objects with some cameras,” according to Marc D’Antonio, chief photo and video analyst for the Mutual UFO Network.
“In that video, the cameraman stated he was looking ‘due south.’ I believe that, due south at some point during the night, you will see Sirius, the brightest star in the northern sky. Because a star is ever only a point source, the slightest disturbance to the air between the camera and edge of the atmosphere in the direction being imaged will cause the image to dance around. This is called atmospheric scintillation,” D’Antonio told The Huffington Post.
In addition to his work as a video analyst, D’Antonio is CEO of FX Models, where he builds miniature versions of classified objects for his clients that include the U.S. Navy, Congress and the joint chiefs of staff. He knows a thing or two about things that are real, faked or simply misidentified.
HuffPost asked D’Antonio to look at another reported UK UFO video from January. This video begins with an object over Liverpool looking remarkably like the object in the first video above from Gloucester:
”In the second video, I noted that the object was out of focus at times. The cameraman stated that the object didn’t move, yet it absolutely did, moving over time from a position to the right and above a branch to a position just off the tip of that branch,” D’Antonio said.
“It had changed direction to reveal its nature ― it was an aircraft, landing lights on when it turned on final approach to a nearby airport. Landing lights can be seen up to 90 miles away and will persist for up to 4-5 minutes, then fade out as the aircraft makes its final turns. In my opinion, the first video showed an astronomical object ― likely Sirius ― and the second video showed a likely aircraft on landing approach.”
Incidentally, the objects in question in these two videos are quite similar to a diamond-shaped “UFO” videotaped in 2015 over another UK town, Tynemouth. In that case, it was determined that the object was, in fact, the bright star Sirius.
If you happen to spot something in the night sky that, at first, seems out-of-this-world and tempts you to consider that you’re lucky enough to witness visitors from far away, remember that you’re more than likely seeing something that is truly astronomical in nature.

The Mysterious Washington D.C. UFO Sightings
The Mysterious Washington D.C. UFO Sightings
As hard as it is to imagine now, there was once a time when UFOs were given serious, front-page coverage in US national news, and when the Air Force would hold press conferences at the Pentagon to brief the public on what it knew.
All of this began to change after a highly-publicized pair of UFO sightings over the nation’s capitol in the summer of 1952.
Nog niet eerder zagen we het silhouet van de dwergplaneet in zo’n hoge resolutie!
New Horizons scheerde in juli 2015 langs Pluto.
Afbeelding: NASA / Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory / Southwest Research Institute.
According to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC):
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was created as an independent agency by Congress in 1974 to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials for beneficial civilian purposes while protecting people and the environment. The NRC regulates commercial nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, such as in nuclear medicine, through licensing, inspection and enforcement of its requirements.
Over the years, many UFO reports have surfaced regarding unidentified craft being seen over sensitive nuclear installations. It only makes sense, that the NRC would be a prime target under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for documents relating to the phenomena.
The documents were received relatively quickly. They were requested by The Black Vault on February 27, 2017, and were declassified and released to me on March 23, 2017.
Most surprising, there is new information never-before-seen within these records. It is revealed that a former security guard of the Cooper Nuclear Station witnessed a UFO sometime between the years 1986 and 1989. The report described the UFO encounter as the following:
While posted at the intake structure one night, he observed an “unidentified flying object” fly down the Missouri River about 150 feet in the air and hover in front of the intake. He observed it for a few moments and then contacted a fellow security officer who also observed it (he could not recall the individual’s name exactly but his first name was [REDACTED] and his last name was either [REDACTED ]. After they together observed the UFO, it turned and went back up the river and did not come back that shift. He and the other officer shared their observation with their peers who did not believe them.
The next evening he again was posted at the intake and observed the UFO return again. This time he didn’t call anyone until the UFO had traversed into the protected area and hovered above the protected area just north of the Reactor Building. He said it was roughly triangular in shape with a circle of rotating lights on the bottom. He could not hear any propulsion noise from the UFO. He believes that it was roughly 1/3 the size of the Reactor Building. Once the UFO hovered in the protected area. He called the security break room and most of the officers on shift observed the UFO.
Interestingly, after the report was taken by the NRC, the documents were compiled and sent to Cooper Nuclear Station in 2010. Although no formal response was requested, Cooper Nuclear Station was told only to tell employees there that were on a “need to know” basis.
The declassified records also include reports submitted by the public to the NRC about UFO activity, and even alien technology. The NRC gave the standard response to all of the letters sent in, that the NRC mission did not include the topics they were writing about.
The declassified documents can be seen below, in their entirety. They are unedited and appear exactly how they were received by The Black Vault from the NRC.

Exclusive full interview of former Arizona governor discussing his Phoenix Lights UFO sighting (Video)
Exclusive full interview of former Arizona governor discussing his Phoenix Lights UFO sighting (Video)
In 2006, former Arizona governor Fife Symington admitted to being a witness to Arizona’s most famous UFO sighting, and that he believed it to be of extraterrestrial origins. His statements made worldwide news. In association with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Phoenix Lights UFO event, James Fox, the documentarian that first obtained Symington’s confession shared never before seen footage from the interview during his presentation at the 2016 International UFO Congress. Now, with Fox’s permission, we present the interview here for our readers.

In the newly released footage, Symington says he believes the UFO sighting was escalated up the chain of command.
“Issues like this go up the chain of command all the way to the Pentagon,” explains Symington. “We called the Pentagon…I think they knew there had been sightings, but they weren’t talking about it.”
As for the official Air Force response that the UFOs were flares, Symington says that is “total bunk.”
“I have seen high altitude flares before. There is no way they were flares.”
When it comes to what flew over Phoenix in March of 1997, Symington says, “It has never been explained.”

What is now referred to as “The Phoenix Lights,” was a flap of UFO sightings on March 13, 1997. It has kept Arizona buzzing ever since. Over 1000 witnesses reportedly came forward, including former Arizona Governor Fife Symington.
Symington first admitted to seeing the object during this interview with Fox. Fox provided Symington with testimony from several witnesses who were disappointed with the way Symington dealt with the incident in 1997. Symington then admitted to Fox he had also seen the object, and he agreed it was unworldly. Fox was not expecting this response.
After the interview, news of Symington’s confession leaked and he was asked to share his experience with CNN and other news outlets.

Bright lights, light-fingered aliens: all part of annual report on UFO sightings
THE CANADIAN PRESS
Bright lights, airplane near-misses and light-fingered aliens with a penchant for cool shades are all part of the annual report on UFO sightings in Canada.
The 2016 Canadian UFO Survey produced by Winnipeg-based Ufology Research was released this week. In total, there were 1,131 sightings of unidentified flying objects reported across Canada.
In a first for the 28 years the study has been conducted, only 4% of the sightings could not be explained. Study author Chris Rutkowski said that record-low rating is likely the result of more careful scrutiny of raw report information available.
Summer is the big time of year for UFO sightings and mostly they were simply lights that people saw in the sky.
The provinces with the largest populations had the most reports, so Quebec led the country with 38.5% of the sightings, while Ontario had 26% and British Columbia had 17%.
The most popular shape of UFO reported in 2016 was a simple point source of light (57%). Other shapes reported were triangle (four per cent), ball (nine per cent), cigar (three per cent) and fireball (five per cent). The classic “flying saucer” was only reported 48 times.
As for what the study calls “unknowns,” they included such cases as the “gigantic, disc-shaped object with searchlights” that was seen moving over the mountains in North Vancouver, and the boomerang-shaped “cluster of stars” that moved across the sky near St.
Not all close encouters are so dramatic, however. One person in Tecumseh, Ont., reported that an alien stole his sunglasses and belt, while someone from Rimouski, Que., filed a report which read simply: “They contacted me!”
