Transition begins
U.S. President Donald Trump signed a bill authorizing a $19.5 billion budget for NASA in 2017, setting its priorities for the year. It was a dazzling light show that bewitched astronomers watching the night sky above Norwich - but was it proof of life on other planets?
Just months after Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, the Eastern Evening News front page carried a story about a visit from an Unidentified Flying Object which might have travelled to Earth through its own corona.
On October 8, the EEN reported that Frank Potter had spotted something unusual in the sky over his home on South Park Avenue in Norwich.
The amateur astronomer told reporters that he’d seen a noiseless object two days earlier at 7.15pm, travelling from south-west to north-east.
Training his telescope on the craft, he followed the saucer-shaped object as it sped across the sky, noting: “rays or beams of light could be seen distinctly from the dome and attached directly beneath it was a much larger and flattened dome with a protruding band running in a circumference around its edge.
“The underneath of the large flattened bottom dome was hollow and appeared to be glowing red, but there were no vapour trails or gases to be seen.”
The article prompted several other star-gazers to come forward to say they too had spotted something to suggest that we are not alone.
Mr Potter also revealed that a further seven members of the Norwich Astronomical Society, to which he belonged, had also seen the saucer.
Leonard G Cramp, vice-president of the British UFO Research Association, included the Norwich sighting in his 1954 book Space, Gravity and The Flying Saucer, a highly technical examination of the technology necessary to build a flying saucer.
Excerpts from Cramp’s book - including Mr Potter’s testimony - can be found online in the Central Intelligence Agency’s declassified documents library.

There were 17 UFO sightings in Nova Scotia last year, according to annual data from UFOlogy Research of Manitoba.
The organization released the 2016 Canadian UFO Survey, an annual list of all the reported sightings across the country for the previous year, on March 29.
In 2016, 1,131 UFO reports were officially filed in Canada, the fifth year in a row more than 1,000 cases were reported.
Since the annual Canadian UFO Survey was initiated in 1989, Canadians have reported 18,038 sightings. More than 2,100 of these reports are categorized as “Unexplained.”
The 17 reported Nova Scotia sightings are as follows:
Feb. 2: East Bay – four white triangular objects slowly flying in strange patterns in the sky
March 1: Terence Bay – possible plane crash, explosion, with a “plane” descending before breaking in half and catching on fire.
March 26: Bear River – a beam of blue-white light straight down to the ground, no visible craft.
April 27: Canning – orange light flying erratically in the sky before descending and disappearing.
July 31: Cheticamp – two objects flying through sky. Car starter stopped working.
Aug. 1: New Waterford – large ball of pulsating light moving at different speeds and turning slightly.
Aug. 8: Porters Lake – bright light moving across the sky.
Sept. 12: Upper Tantallon – large reflective triangular object hovering before receding fast and vanishing.
Sept. 26: Donkin – unknown object seen in photo. Possibly water drop. Military plane seen in area a day later.
Oct. 10: Nova Scotia (exact location not specified) – star-like object stationary for 10 minutes then darting across the sky.
Oct. 11: Port Greville — three orange fireballs and a "spider-like" object moving across the sky.
Oct. 21: Glace Bay – star-like objects in “reverse P” formation; “black satin rippling.”
Oct. 27: Halifax – large white light falling from the sky.
Nov. 10: Sherbrooke – orange light fading between yellow and orange while moving in the sky.
Nov. 12: Truro – oval-shaped light with yellow light around it, slowly moving before a bright flash of light and it was gone.
Dec. 9: Truro – low-flying object like shooting star.
Dec. 21: Halifax – bright light like flash moved east to west quickly, slower than shooting star.

An Auckland couple says unidentified flying objects are hanging around their property - and they have video they say proves it.
Lance and Patricia Rasmussen claim to have seen the mysterious, shapeshifting coloured orbs around their Manukau Heads home most nights for about a year.
They say they're at a loss to explain what it is, but don't believe they are drones or planes because they appear metres from their house.
The couple, in their 50s, has also contacted the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to ask what they thought it might be.
A CAA spokesman confirmed the conversation took place, but was not officially recorded.
"If someone wants to 'make it official' then we ask them to email us with details - in the case of UFOs we would usually tell them that if there was something untoward then we'd expect Airways or pilots to have something to say.
"In the absence of any such reports we won't be investigating it - although we are happy to record it," the spokesman says.
The representative who spoke to the couple suggested it could be drones or an approaching aircraft, but "the caller was adamant those could not be the cause".
Ms Rasmussen has taken hundreds of photos of the objects which stay around their isolated Awhitu property, where they've lived for 12 years, "all night long".
She says they normally hover just metres above their roof and make no noise.
The photos sent to Newshub show indistinct lights against a pitch black background, but one of the house's six security cameras did capture movement on Thursday night.
Mr Rasmussen described the objects as spheres "three times the size of a CD, like a big record-type thing" and said some would be less than four metres away from him when they hovered in the garden.
"They fly and they change shape and they can stay up for more than two or three hours and can change shape and colours right in front of your eyes.
"I don't know if they mean any harm or anything like that, but it's pretty out there, y'know?"
The first time they saw the objects, the couple were both afraid.
He says that first sighting coincided with Ms Rasmussen ending up in hospital after developing a severe skin condition on her foot.
Mr Rasmussen says the couple just want an explanation of what they've been seeing from someone.
"We really would like to know what's going on ourselves.
"If they are people from somewhere else, best they go and pick on someone else," he laughed.

We shot this video from the Apex area near Nellis Air Force Base outside of Las Vegas, Nevada on the night of March 26, 2017. I put together a group UFO hunt on Sunday night. We initially went to a spot out of town out in the desert where we thought we would have a good view of the Air Force Base. There were seven of us to start but after about and hour another car showed up and parked. They got out of the car and fired a shot the opposite direction. Earlier there had been several vehicles to the west of us that had been shooting but they finally left. We weren’t seeing anything and having people wanting to shoot guns around us was uncomfortable so we moved to the last spot I had been when my car went bonkers with locking itself and flashing its lights. Bill and Susan went home but Luis, Jonathan, Heather, Donald and I went to the other location and tried again. We waited a bit and then I noticed numerous lights swirling around in the sky near Red Rock Canyon on my side of town. We were there to try and film lights at Nellis but ironically they appeared about thirty miles away much closer to where I live. It was incredible because I counted at least eleven UFOs. Even through the night vision camera, I could see one that was red and another looked yellow. I had zoomed in but I noticed at the very beginning that there were two more red UFOs up higher and out of the picture. There may have been more than a dozen. We all took turns looking through the night vision camera. I had my camcorder but realized that it was missing the SD Card. I had left it plugged into the SD Card Reader on my computer. At times we could see them visually without even using the binoculars. Soon after we started filming three police cars came and parked about two hundred yards away from us with lights flashing. Soon after a police helicopter arrived and began circling, shining a spotlight down on something. We had no idea what they were looking for. The helicopter finally left but the police cars were still there when we left even though we had been filming for more than one hour. Both Donald and I had the same idea to move to the area where we ended up and I am really happy we did. This video is off the hook.

New giant viruses found at an Austrian wastewater treatment plant probably evolved from a smaller virus that picked up bits of genome from its hosts and incorporated it, Frankenstein-like, into its own genetic code.
The discovery of the new viruses was accidental — but enlightening. The research team was combing through genetic sequences from a wastewater treatment plant in the town of Klosterneuburg, Austria, trying to understand bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrate during the treatment process. Cannibal calories
Prehistoric humans were known to feast on horses and reindeer, but occasionally, these early humans would also chow down on each other. Scientists have uncovered grisly evidence of this ancient cannibalism in butchered bones of children and adults found in caves across Europe.

Beauty uncovered

Hidden for centuries, mosaic floors from the lost Roman city of Ucetia have been uncovered in France.
The French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) announced that the dig has so far been very fruitful. Some of the walls and structures that were uncovered date to just before the Roman conquest of present-day France (called Gaul at the time). The new finding is "important from a public health perspective, given that about one-third of adults in the U.S. and more than a quarter of the world's population is overweight," study author Edward Yu, a graduate student at the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health in Boston, said in a statement. Annual Report On UFO Sightings Released
Winnipeg-based Ufology Research recently published their 2016 Canadian UFO Survey, which features light-fingered alien, airplane near-misses, and bright lights. There were 1,131 reported UFO sightings in total across Canada. Only four percent of the total sightings could not be explained. The percentage is a record low in 28 years the study has been carried out. Chris Rutkowski, the study author, explained that low rating is likely the result of more scrutiny of UFO sighting claims.
UFO sighting reports are usually on the rise during summer, but turn out to be simple lights in the sky.
Among the provinces, Quebec led the country with 38.5 percent of the sightings. The province also has the largest populations. Ontario placed second with 26 percent and followed by British Columbia with 17 percent.
A simple point source of light comprises most shapes of reported UFOs with 57 percent. Other forms indicated were balls (9%), fireballs (5%), triangles(4%), and cigars (3%).
The report includes cases of the massive, disc-shaped object with searchlights flying over the mountains in North Vancouver. It mentions the boomerang-shaped spotted moving across the sky near St. Thomas in Ontario.
There is also a reference to a reported near miss of the commercial plane over Toronto with an unidentified flying object while on a routine flight on November 14.
Close encounter cases are not that high when compared to UFO sightings, but high on the strangeness scale.
A man in Cornwall, P.E.I saw a thin, six-foot-tall, long-fingered white being in a black suit, which spoke to him in his bedroom before leaving by walking through a wall.
Those close encounter cases also include a man in Lanaudiere, Quebec who claimed he was transported into a field of plants and plunged into a bathtub where three green, big-eyed humanoid creatures surrounded him and communicated with him telepathically.

Now this is odd. I can distinctly see many shadows from the clouds on the ground, however, I cannot see any shadow on the ground from the UFOs. Why? Perhaps alien technology cannot cast a shadow...an excellent way to prevent people from noticing you when they are walking on the ground looking down...no shadow appears and they never bother looking up.
From the lack of shadows on the ground and the thinness and the darkness of these objects, I can confirm that they are alien craft. It appears to be about half a mile across. And thats still considered small compared to other alien craft from other official reports. For example, two planes confirmed sighting three yellow disks that were over the ocean near Guernsey Island back in 2007 and all the UFOs were over a mile across. (Click here to see that video).

We were on a Frontier Airplane coming from Philadelphia, PA and preparing to land in Charlotte, NC close to noon on 4/7/2017. Our 7 year old son was sitting by the window. He told us to look out the window because he sees a spaceship in the sky. We took 3 pictures of the object in the sky. One of the pics shows 2 objects. If you zoom in on the pics, it does look like it could be something. Our son seemed so sure that it was a spaceship.

It was the first time my site was on CNN and hundreds of these white lights were seen flying around but at incredible speed...like the speed of a arrow. Very remarkable and unbelievable if you have never before witnessed such and event. I also think that these tiny UFOs are alive...and even cause some lightening storms to happen. Scott C. Watching NBC Nightly News last night, Apr 6, starting at 5:30p MST. During the coverage of the storms in the southeast, film footage was showing lightning strikes over water. I noticed for just a couple of seconds an object flying really fast under the cloud cover from the right side of the screen towards the left. This morning I replayed the segment footage from their website and am including the screen shots from the seconds before, during and after the object was in sight. The object moved quite a distance in one second. I was limited to the amount of pictures I could upload. I have another screen shot of the1:15 second mark, just before the last photo. I'm hoping someone with the right equipment will enhance.
This is a dark disk moving slowly over a busy road in Morelia, Mexico. The person recording the UFO did an outstanding job since they were also driving the car. In the video, we get to see its smooth movement and its disk edge. It moves gracefully and silently over the city. Its rare to see such a close up of a real UFO. Savour the moment guys. News states: Morelia, Michoacán (MiMorelia.com/Redacción) .- In recent days was captured an unidentified flying object (UFO) in broad daylight, north of the city of Morelia. According to the user who captured the images, it was on March 27th when this strange black object was observed and circular. Seven First Nations reported unidentified flying objects in 2016, according to an annual survey by Winnipeg-based Ufology Research.
Three of those sightings were on Walpole Island — located over 250 kilometres southwest of Toronto — according to the 2016 Canadian UFO Survey, which lists 1,131 reports from across the country.
The incidents in Walpole Island include someone reporting a "bright light remaining in one area but moving up and down slightly" on the evening of Jan. 3, 2016.
On Jan. 4, 2016 someone in Kahnawake reported seeing a "large yellow pyramid hovering in the sky" over the Mohawk community, located near Montreal.
Bright lights, flying objects
Most of the 2016 sightings reported by First Nations were in Ontario and Quebec, including one on the Sagamok First Nation on May 27, when someone there spotted a "bright light moving very fast before disappearing."
Someone in Wikwemikong, located on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, reported seeing an "object flying past the moon with no sound in a straight line" on July 19.
But there was also a sighting in La Ronge, a northern Saskatchewan town where most of the residents are Cree or Métis. According to the document, someone reported witnessing "seven lights moving in the sky" on Nov. 10.
A nd a report from Iqaluit said someone saw "many star-like lights flying together" on Sept. 16.
The Canadian UFO Survey has been compiled annually since 1989 by Ufology Research of Manitoba. The group said 18,038 sightings across Canada have been catalogued since the survey began.

A witness reported to MUFON about his sighting in Gosport, Great Britain involving three lights that at times formed a triangle flying low in the sky. These lights also made random movements before all vanishing without a trace, according to the witness testimony filed as case 81450 in Mutual UFO Network witness reporting database.
On January 9, 2017, the witness stepped outside to dispose rubbish bags in his work as a cleaner at 10:50 pm.
He then noticed three green lights in the northwest of his position, at around 30-degree angle. The witness admitted that he could not estimate the distance and height from his position. Curious about the possible environment where the mysterious lights were spotted, he looked it up on Google maps and found out that they were mostly fields in that direction. He also provided the postcode where he observed the lights, which was PO13 0HR.
The witness described the lights as evenly spaced at times in a large triangle formation when he first noticed them. They all then turned purple and began moving. The video he submitted shows how the three lights move.
The witness revealed that he had his phone camera in a full zoom. The quality of the video is not that good, but the lights can be seen in bright purple color moving in a random manner, side-to-side, up and down very fast and turning very sharply. They swap sides and pass each other, sometimes form a triangle formation again for a few seconds before they move again.
The witness lost sight of the lights as they moved down below the houses several times until they did not reappear above the houses. The witness decided to position himself to the second level to see those lights from a higher angle. He saw one light again above the house but disappeared quickly downwards. They all never went up again after that, the witness stated.

Scientists have found a planet that looks like Earth – and, for the first time, has its own hazy atmosphere.
The discovery represents a major leap forward in the hunt for a planet like our own that could support alien life.
The planet, which is 39 lightyears from us, has a hazy atmosphere that could have a "water world" beneath it, scientists say.
While the planet isn't likely to be habitable, it suggests that there might be more planets out there with the kind of atmosphere that could support life. Until now, scientists have only been able to see giant "hot Jupiter" planets that are too warm to house aliens.
The "super-Earth" planet known as GJ 1132b was observed as it passed in front of a cool red dwarf star, blocking out some of the star's light.
By measuring the slight drop in the star's brightness, astronomers were able to work out that the planet was 1.4 times the size of Earth.
They also found that in one light wavelength band, the planet looked slightly bigger. This could be explained by an atmosphere that was opaque to some light wavelengths, but transparent to others.

Next exoplanet could be found accidentally by gamers
Dr John Southworth, from the University of Keele, who led the team, said: "While this is not the detection of life on another planet, it's an important step in the right direction.
"The detection of an atmosphere around the super-Earth GJ 1132b marks the first time that an atmosphere has been detected around an Earth-like planet other than Earth itself.
"With this research, we have taken the first tentative step into studying the atmospheres of smaller, Earth-like planets. We simulated a range of possible atmospheres for this planet, finding that those rich in water and/or methane would explain the observations of GJ 1132b.
"The planet is significantly hotter and a bit larger than Earth, so one possibility is that it is a 'water world' with an atmosphere of hot steam."
Analysing the chemical composition of exoplanet atmospheres could in future yield tell-tale signs of life.
Ozone, derived from oxygen released by plants, is one atmospheric life marker. Methane is another, although it can also be generated by volcanic activity.
US planetary scientist Dr Sara Seager, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has compiled a list of 14,000 different molecules that could provide biosignatures of life on alien worlds.
The American space agency Nasa's new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), due to be launched next year as a successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, will be powerful enough to begin studying the atmospheres of Earth-like exoplanets.
There are also proposals for an even bigger High Definition Space Telescope (HDST), with a 40ft-wide mirror twice as large as the one carried by the JWST. It would directly image planets in nearby star systems and search for the fingerprints of life in their atmospheres.
The HDST, likely to be a multibillion-pound international project, is not expected to be launched until the 2030s.

The solitary mountain on the dwarf planet Ceres may be slowly disappearing, following in the footsteps of earlier peaks.
New research suggests that the outer layer of the icy world may be slowly shifting over time, allowing the peak to gradually stretch out and sink into the crust. Similar mountains may have peppered the planet in the past and flattened out over time.
"It's sort of like if you spill some syrup or honey on a plate and you watch it spread out over time, not instantaneously like water does but a little more slowly, it eventually gets to a flatter, broader shape; it's the same process," Michael Sori, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona, told Space.com. Sori is lead author on a paper proposing that the mountain, called Ahuna Mons, may be slowly spreading outward due to its viscosity. He presented the results in March at the Lunar and Planetary Sciences conference in The Woodlands, Texas.
The lonely ice mountain
When NASA's Dawn mission arrived at Ceres in 2015, it found a nearly flat world with only a single mountain, Ahuna Mons. The massive summit towers 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) above the surface and is at most 200 million years old. Previous research has suggested the peak could be an ice volcano — forming through the process of cryovolcanism, or flowing ice — but its source is still under debate.
The mountain's isolation has been a major puzzle for scientists since Dawn first spotted it. Other icy worlds suspected of hosting cryovolcanoes, such as Pluto and the moons Europa, Triton and Titan, have multiple suspects. Ceres has only one. According to Sori, one possibility is that cryovolcanism was dormant on Ceres until fairly recently — although he calls that an unlikely scenario.
"It's just odd to think of a thermal history of a planet where that would happen, where you would have it be dead for most of its history and then just yesterday, relatively speaking, become active," he said. "It's a weird thermal history to think about."
The other, more likely option is that cryovolcanoes formed throughout the planet's lifetime, then disappeared. Because Ceres lacks an atmosphere or running liquids on its surface, the erosion processes of wind and rain that wear down Earth's mountains don't happen on the tiny world.
Sori and his colleagues focused not on the formation of the mountain but on what happened afterward. They modeled possible compositions for Ahuna Mons and found that, if at least 40 percent of the mountain was made up of ice, it would slowly spread outward like honey on a plate, gradually relaxing or flattening down over time. With more ice, the mountain became more viscous, wavering between solid and liquid.
"Our stuff takes place after the initial emplacement process, so we can be a little bit agnostic as to how the mountain formed in the first place," Sori said. "The key is, it just needs to have enough ice to experience this viscous relaxation."
Cratering records provide one method for calculating the age of a terrain. While Ahuna Mons itself lacks signs of impacts, the region it sits in has craters that provide a limit of about a billion years for the mountain, previous research has shown. Sori's team came up with an even younger age if the precipice is relaxing. If the peak is half ice, it would take 500 million years to relax away after formation, he said; if it is completely ice, it would vanish within 20 million years of its birth.
"Ahuna Mons is young, no more than 200 million years old," Sori said. Its youth suggests that the planet may still be geologically active today, though no definitive signs have been spotted by Dawn.

Lonely no more
Ceres may be the lone peak today, but there's evidence that another spire may have risen in the past. Near Ahuna Mons lies the shape of another hill, spotted by a previous team. This may be the remnants of a previous cryovolcano like Ahuna Mons that gradually relaxed away, Sori said.
"Maybe it was emplaced in the same shape [as Ahuna Mons] but flowed into its current shape over a few hundred million years," he added.
That could suggest that the region around Ahuna Mons may be an ongoing source of cryovolcanism. On Earth, shifting plates cause lava to erupt through the crust in multiple locations, often spawning chains of volcanoes, but Ceres has no plate tectonics. Sori said the region could be more like Mars, where rocky lava continued to pile up on itself to create the massive Olympus Mons, the largest known volcano in the solar system. But while Ahuna Mons may be relaxing due to ice, the rocky Olympus Mons stands firm.
Sori and his colleagues plan to search other images of Ceres for signs of potentially relaxed cryovolcanoes.

This happened exactly 11 years ago in 2006. It was my last year in high school, and I was involved in the art department.
Specifically there was three classes, Photography, Digital Photography and Natural Art. These three rooms were linked together in the middle by an office. I remember that it was me and two friends who were assistances for the teachers and we were talking in the office with the photography teacher.
He was telling us about a camera that was found in his sister’s house. It belonged to a military officer and well he had this camera in his attic, and while they were cleaning out the house and came across it, she decided to develop the pictures to see what they were.
To her surprise, my teacher described her reaction as “completely horrified” there were pictures she immediately threw away and could not believe. He never described to me what these pictures were but one of them he was able to keep.
It’s a specimen with an unknown tag on it. The military official that lived there apparently had died a long time ago and worked in a facility, but nobody ever knew where. My teacher was able to get this picture that was developed, and he showed it to us.
I asked if I could take a picture of it or show it to my friends he said no. He put it in his office and locked the office after we were finished seeing it. During lunch, my department (digital photography) had keys available for the office, and I quickly took the keys and opened the office while they were on lunch and well I quickly snapped pictures and ran back inside the classroom.
