MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Je kan ook hun site bekijken onder www.mufon.com. Ze geven een maandelijks tijdschrift uit, namelijk The MUFON UFO-Journal. Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

NASA TO LAUNCH 'ALIEN HUNTING' WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE IN LATE 2018

A telescope is being tested by NASA in a vacuum that is freezing cold before it is launched into space with the hope of unlocking some of the mysteries of how the universe was formed after the big bang and if planets outside of the solar system have alien life.

NASA said that to make sure that the optics of the telescope will be able to operate in the frigid destination, which is 1 million miles in space; it must first go through some cryogenic temperature tests in a vacuum.

The James Webb Space Telescope made its way carefully and slowly from its location at the Goddard Space Flight Center to the Johnson Space Center in Houston to take part in the tests. The tests are going to take place in the vacuum chamber that the Apollo spacecraft went through before it took the first humans to the moon. NASA said that the test was a critical one as it would verify the performance of the telescope end to end at cold temperatures that are extremely low.

Following the tests at Johnson the telescope, which is a project between NASA, the Canadian Space Agency and European Space Agency, will move to California to be assembled and tested, it will then be launched in the latter half of 2018. The mission of the telescope is to explore some of the oldest galaxies in the universe along with being able to get a much closer look at planetary systems.

The James Webb Space Telescope has been likened to that of a flower blooming; however, it is, in fact, a very tough piece of technology. One of the solar systems the telescope will capture is the TRAPPIST-1 system, made up of seven planets that are orbiting a star around 40 light years away. Astronomers revealed their finding only recently and noted that three of the planets might be in the star's habitable zone. This is a region that is at the correct distance from the source of heat to be able to sustain liquid water. However, all seven of the planets may be habitable as they are so close together and the sun, which orbits closer than the scorched Mercury planet to the sun, something that is possible due to the star being smaller and cooler than that of our own.

A NASA exoplanet scientist said that if the planets have atmospheres, the James Webb Space Telescope should be the key that is needed to unlock the secrets. It is thought that the secrets include the makeup of the atmosphere, for instance, whether they contain oxygen, water, carbon dioxide and other compounds. The Webb telescope may be able to take a look at the LHS 114ob, which is located 40 light years away in a habitable zone of the star. Scientists are excited about the newly discovered planet as it shares a lot of similarities to Earth and it is said to be about the same age, even though it is heavier and bigger.

Witness says hovering triangles were ‘enormous’

A Georgia witness at Savannah reported watching two large, triangle-shaped objects hovering over the city at 9:45 p.m. on April 25, 2017, according to testimony in Case 83466 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness described two hovering triangle objects while driving down East Broad Street in Savannah, GA, pictured. (Credit: Google)

The witness and a roommate were driving back into the city fromTybee Island when the incident occurred.

“I was sitting in the passenger seat, looking out of the window,” the witness stated.“We were headed south on East Broad when I saw two very large, triangular crafts hovering above the city. They were very dark (dark gray to black) in color. They were covered in large, round white lights. The crafts were parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground. The widest part of the triangle was closest to the ground with the top pointing upward. They stayed stationary. I saw them above the city, fairly low, flying for any sort of air traffic.”

The objects were described as enormous. Pictured: East Broad Street, Savannah, GA. (Credit: Google)

The witness could not judge the size of the objects.

“I can’t say exactly how large they were, except to describe them as enormous. The car windows were up, so I couldn’t hear anything, but I would expect something of that size to make a sound loud enough to be heard inside a nearby vehicle. I will note that on the way back from the islands, I did notice two or three seemingly stationary aircrafts in the distance. Unlike the triangles, these seemed to be either planes or helicopters, but they were too far away for me to give more details than that. The night was somewhat cloudy and the triangles were far below the clouds.”

The objects were quickly lost due to buildings and trees. Pictured: East Broad Street, Savannah, GA. (Credit: Google)

The witness quickly lost sight of the objects due to buildings and trees.

“I lost sight of them for a few seconds, as a building obstructed my view of them. We drove past an alley, at which point I caught sight of them again. When we got to the next cross street, I asked my roommate to turn right. She did, but the street was lined with trees which obstructed the view of the sky. When we turned again, we had a clearer view of the sky, but we could not spot the triangles. Unfortunately, since my roommate was driving, she never saw them.”

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and is the county seat of Chatham County, population 145,674. Georgia MUFON State Director Ralph Howard is investigating. No images or videos were included with the MUFON report, which was filed on May 1, 2017. Please remember that most UFO sightings can be explained as something natural or man-made. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.

A message for Earth-visiting UFO aliens (if they're real)

Listen up all you UFO-piloting aliens from outer space, this Earth resident has a few reasonable demands.

    by Amanda Kooser

A "UFO" as seen from my backyard.
    Amanda Kooser/CNET

    Dear UFO-flying aliens,

You're not as sneaky as you think you are. YouTube is full of shaky and fuzzy videos showing your mysterious lights, orbs and various flying blobs checking out our less-advanced civilization. We're onto you, but I have a few requests that would be a big help for some of us more-skeptical people:

    1. Please hold still.

Camera technology has advanced at an incredible rate, but we still can't seem to get a decent video of your high-tech, space-faring, Earth-visiting crafts. Sure, we can photograph a single airplane from the International Space Station, but we can't seem to capture a clear video of one of your UFOs. I would appreciate it if you could come in low over a well-populated area and hover in good lighting for at least a few minutes. Just long enough for someone to get some solid footage is all I ask.

    2. Land and say "Hi."

I can understand why you haven't bothered to introduce yourselves yet. Humans are kind of weird and scary. We tend to kill things we don't understand. But we're not all like that. I would suggest landing somewhere in New Mexico where we're used to the idea of space aliens thanks to all the tourism around Roswell and an alleged UFO landing there back in 1947.

I recommend aiming for the 2017 UFO Festival in Roswell this July. We're pretty chill. You will be greeted like an old friend and we'll give you a cool t-shirt and alien-eye-shaped sunglasses. Just imagine the vacation photos you'll get to show your buddies back on your home planet.

    https://www.cnet.com/pictures/ufos-yetis-big-foot-nessie-sea-monsters-pictures/

Yetis and UFOs and sea monsters, oh my! (pictures)

    3. Watch some Star Trek.

You may be hesitant to get in touch with us because you've seen our Earth productions like the "Alien" series and "Independence Day." Admittedly, the aliens don't come off very well. As an antidote, I suggest you binge-watch all of "Star Trek." See? Some of us dream of all getting along some day! We would love to start a real United Federation of Planets with you. And we have really cool conventions. You'll love it and nobody will judge you based on your alien looks.

    More aliens

    4. Step up your Mars-sculpture game.

We also know you've been hanging out on Mars, creating sculptures for whatever artistic or ritualistic endeavors you're into. I don't mean to come off like an art critic, but your efforts on Mars are a little too impressionistic. Please work on expressing yourself with a stronger sense of realism so we don't have to guess if some random stone is a statue or just a weirdly-shaped rock.

It would also help if you would sign your work, release an artist's statement and offer a price tag in case one of our rovers would like to purchase it.

    5. Please don't eat us.

If I'm totally off track here and you're hovering above our cities and countrysides while you're working out the best way to cook and serve humans, I have a final request: Don't eat us. Also, please don't raise us on ranches, put us in zoos on other planets or probe us for any reason. Remember, we have Will Smith ready in case you try any hijinks.

Is there something strange going on in Suffolk County?

More UFO sightings have been reported in Suffolk than in any other county in New York State, according to data from a new book.

In “UFO Sightings Desk Reference,” authors Cheryl Costa and Linda Miller Costa — a couple based in Syracuse — compile national data from two volunteer organizations, the Mutual UFO Network and the National UFO Reporting Center. Both organizations collect eyewitness accounts of UFO sightings, Cheryl Costa said.

The 371-page tome is a collection of charts and graphs showing sightings by region, sorting incidents chronologically and categorizing the UFOs by shape, Cheryl Costa said.

From 2001 through 2015, there were 554 compiled reports from Suffolk County. That’s 100 more sightings than were reported in Manhattan over the same time frame and more than twice as many as were reported in Queens, according to Costa, who conducted a county-by-county analysis of reports pulled from the national reporting networks.

UFOs have been seen in every part of the country, according to Costa. The most reports filed nationwide were from Los Angeles County, followed by Maricopa County, Arizona.

So how does one compile data on something that is, by definition, unidentified? Reports of sightings are scrutinized by a network of investigators, according to Roger Marsh, a spokesman for the Mutual UFO Network, which purports to be the oldest and largest UFO investigative group in the country. The National UFO Reporting Center, which has received more than 100,000 reports since it was founded in 1974, also attempts to point out “hoaxes,” director Peter Davenport said. The Costas broke down their reports into more than 25 categories of sightings, including blimp, fireball, Saturn-like and starlike.

Even before Costa began working on the book, she singled out Suffolk County as a “hot spot” for sightings. She noticed the trend while writing a column on flying saucers and other UFOs for the Syracuse New Times, she said.

Costa hasn’t analyzed data from Suffolk County on a community level, but said there are a large number of reports that come from Islip, Oakdale and Great River, which she referred to in a 2014 column as the “Great River Triangle.”

Nassau County ranked third in the state with 276 reports, she said. In both counties, the number of sightings has been increasing, with a spike seen in 2012, Costa said.

Costa, who said she saw her first UFO in Savona, New York, when she was 12, said she is focused on data and does not speculate on why there are so many Long Island sightings.

She’s hoping the book, which makes no mention of little green men, will “detoxify” and lessen the stigma around the subject and get more people — like the government — talking about UFOs.

“We don’t talk about who’s driving these things, but somebody should because there sure are a lot of them,” Costa said.

This is a sleek UFO cloaked in this cloud which allows it to move low and slow over the surface of the ground. Notice that the center of the UFO has a hump spot, its really a transparent (glass-like) dome part of the ship for observing.

    News states:
It may have been grounded for more than 13 years but this picture shows the spirit of the Concorde lives on in the sky. This photograph, taken in the Yorkshire Dales, shows a cloud formation that looks eerily like the iconic supersonic jet flying over the Ribblehead Viaduct. It was snapped by Thomas Beresford, a Winter Maintenance operative for North Yorkshire County Council, who spotted the jaw-dropping sight at 5:30am. He said: 'I was took it on the way to work this morning. It was a phantom Concorde flying over Whernside.'

UFOs often hide inside clouds to escape from being seen by humans, so its not too unusual to see some odd tentacles or telescope like objects sticking out of the top of clouds. It obvious that the aliens needed to either absorb the sun for unknown reasons or to get their bering, but one thing I 'm sure they didn't expect was to get caught in someones photos.

    Scott C. Waring
    Eyewitness states:
Flying from Warsaw to London Heathrow, looking out the window to my left. Out of the corner of my eyes I saw these dark, thin figures in the middle of a cloud. It definitely wasn't a building because we were too high up so I thought they were mini tornadoes There were 4 figures: 2 tall ones and 2 slightly small ones. They were very close together and they weren't moving at all. They were dark, had a thicker upper body and a thinner lower body. One of them looks like they had wings. I was in awe and shocked at how it was all deserted then there were these random weird objects just standing on top of a cloud. I took photos and showed my parents and brother the photo and they couldn't believe their eyes. I was also a little bit excited because I have never seen anything like this before. Flew past the object(s) then it disappeared.

Real search for aliens gets weird signal from a sci-fi world

An ambitious search for signals from aliens across space hasn't found much yet, but there was an odd blip from a star system popular with science fiction fans.

In the late 22nd century, a terraforming project is underway on the planet Selika, orbiting the star 107 Piscium some 24 light-years from Earth. Plans to bomb and remake the planet in the image of Earth have ignited controversy because they also threaten to destroy all native life there.

The Green Bank Telescope is scanning the dial for alien stations.

    National Radio Astronomy Observatory

That's part of the plot in award-winning science fiction author Jack McDevitt's 2013 novel "Starhawk." While the storyline is obviously imagined, 107 Piscium is a very real star, and scientists recently picked up intriguing signals when they pointed some of the world's most powerful radio telescopes in its direction.

Late last month, the Stephen Hawking-backed Breakthrough Listen initiative released its first set of alien-hunting data gathered from huge listening devices like the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia to target a list of 692 different stars. Sophisticated software scanned billions of radio channels for unique signals that might be coming from a distant alien civilization.

While there were no obvious messages from E.T. in all the petabytes of data, the analysis did surface 11 "events" considered to be significant. I've just finished a little basic analysis of my own, digging into what's significant about those 11 stars. While I'm no astronomer, I can tell you that one of them is especially significant to sci-fi fans. Breakthrough Listen refers to it as HIP7981, but it's also known as 107 Piscium.

107 Piscium has also appeared in other noted works of science fiction like "Absolution Gap" by the Welsh author and former European Space Agency astronomer Alastair Reynolds. I also dig this cool poem called "The Best Western on 107 Piscium E" for the sci-fi journal Star Line.

To be clear, no one is saying Breakthrough Listen has picked up signals from a civilization on a distant terraformed planet. In fact, the researchers say it's far more likely they're picking up radio interference from our own human technology.

Still, they plan to gather more data and more rigorously analyze the data they've already gathered, including signals from 107 Piscium, which has already been tempting our imaginations for years now.

"Although the search has not yet detected a convincing signal from extraterrestrial intelligence, these are early days," Andrew Siemion from the Breakthrough Listen science team said in a statement.

The data from the project and the software used for the analysis is open source and available for anyone with serious skills to dig into and search for evidence that other franchises might turn out to be a little more science fact than science fiction.

May I suggest starting with the star system from "Babylon 5?" Good luck. The truth is out there, just be sure to report it back to me.

Planetary Protection: Contamination Debate Still Simmers

Scientists have long debated the best ways to minimize the threat of contaminating other worlds with Earth life — or vice versa — while still pursuing aggressive exploration goals.
    Credit: NASA

On Sept. 15, 2017, NASA's Cassini spacecraft will take a suicide plunge into Saturn to avoid contaminating the ringed planet's potentially habitable moons, Titan and Enceladus.

Cassini's fate is tied to the issue of planetary protection, which refers to the measures scientists and engineers take to minimize that chances that life-forms from Earth make it to other worlds. And with NASA's Mars 2020 rover planning to cache samples to one day return to Earth's labs, planetary protection also means making sure that our own world is safe from contamination by possible alien life.

Planetary protection was the first item on the agenda at the Astrobiology Science Conference, which was held last week in Mesa, Arizona. Chemists, biologists, planetary scientists, astronomers and other researchers all vigorously discussed the issue at the meeting's first session on Monday morning (April 24). [5 Bold Claims of Alien Life]

"Planetary protection has never been more important to consider," said Andrew Maynard, a researcher at Arizona State University's Risk Innovation Lab, who led the discussion.

Citing Mars sample return, an upcoming mission to Jupiter's ocean-harboring moon Europa and possible future probes that could visit other icy satellites, Maynard engaged the audience of scientists with the stated intent of changing how they think about the process. Maynard, who is not an astrobiologist but a physicist, turned the attention of the room to studies on risk assessment, urging researchers to consider risk not as something to be avoided but rather as "a complex landscape to be moved through to reach goals."

He also said that analyzing the risk of contamination, either of Earth or another world, isn't the exclusive purview of any particular group of scientists — or of scientists in general.

"Everybody has got some stake," Maynard said.

Concern about contamination has been part of exploration since the dawn of the Space Age. The first three sets of astronauts to land on the moon were kept in isolation on their return to Earth to ensure they hadn't brought any pathogens home with them. [NASA's 17 Apollo Moon Missions in Pictures]

Before NASA's Viking 1 and Viking 2 landers were sent to Mars to hunt for life, they were sterilized to minimize the odds that Earth microbes could contaminate their experiments. The robotic explorers that followed were similarly cleansed. And in 1967, the countries of the world agreed that their space missions would work to avoid contaminating Earth or other worlds, making planetary protection an international goal.

The moon rocks returned by Apollo astronauts soon revealed Earth's natural satellite as a barren, inhospitable place unsuitable for life. The comets and asteroids sampled by past and ongoing missions have already polluted Earth's surface, and NASA has deemed these objects unlikely to harbor life.

But Earth has received relatively few samples from Mars in the form of meteorites. While some scientists think that life could have started on the Red Planet and then hitched a ride to Earth, the issue is far from certain. So, when it comes to returning samples from Mars, space agencies will take great care not to infect Earth.

According to NASA procedural requirement NPR 8020.12: "Unless the sample to be returned is subjected to an accepted, approved, sterilization process, the sample container must be sealed after sample acquisition, and a redundant, fail-safe containment with a method for verification of its operation before Earth-return shall be required."

The requirement also states: "The mission and the spacecraft design shall provide a method to 'break the chain of contact' (BTC) with Mars. No uncontained hardware that contacted Mars, directly or indirectly, may be returned to Earth unless sterilized."

But scientists are still debating just what the biggest concerns are. Maynard's presentation, which involved randomly polling audience members and engaging them in debate, revealed that many of the scientists involved in studying how life could evolve beyond Earth disagree on just how much we need to worry about contamination.

Although the Martian surface appears bereft of life, some researchers think microbes might still exist underground. A sample-return mission could therefore theoretically carry living organisms back to Earth along with rocks and dirt. Whether a Martian microbe could survive on our planet remains a subject of heavy debate.

For instance, during the discussion period, Vladimir Airapetian, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, argued that a living thing that evolved on Mars shouldn't be able to find a place on Earth because all of the planet's biological niches have been filled.

But Benjamin Wolf of Washington University in St. Louis disagreed. "I don't like the argument that we think the niches are taken," he said, citing the success that many invasive species on Earth have had when pushing into previously occupied niches.

"People didn't realize that kudzu would take over the entire South," Wolf said, describing the Japanese vine that has blanketed the southern United States since its 1876 introduction. "We need to understand that sometimes scientists don't know things."

Geochemist Stuart Bartlett, of the Tokyo Institute of Technology's Earth-Life Science Institute, also expressed concern about potentially bringing home organisms able to survive in the extreme conditions on Mars.

"Backwards contamination seems like a more natural candidate for spreading exponentially and invading," Bartlett said.

But Maynard doesn't think that scientists should be the only participants in the discussion. He encouraged opening a dialogue with the public, who would also be affected if a harmful organism were returned to Earth. With most of the world unversed in the potential hazards, Maynard encouraged scientists to do a better job of communicating potential issues, a process that would allow everyone to work together to make an informed decision.

He pointed to the opening of the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator along the France-Switzerland border whose activation some feared would create a microscopic black hole with the potential to destroy Earth. While this risk was considered marginal, Maynard pointed out that the improbable disaster would have a worldwide effect, and that scientists included society in the discussion in a reasonable fashion. (No black hole destroyed Earth when the accelerator was switched on, of course.)

When it comes to sample-return missions, scientists need to determine just how large the threat of extraterrestrial contamination might loom, Maynard said.

"It seems like we have a huge diversity of opinion whether alien life is able to survive on Earth," he said.

During the April 24 discussion, scientists also debated the threat exploration missions pose to the pristine environment of Mars and other worlds. Red Planet rovers and landers are kept in strict isolation throughout their construction, which takes place in clean rooms around the world. Components are sterilized to the best ability of current technology, but researchers stress that it's impossible to kill every microbe aboard any craft.

The concern with carrying micro-organisms abroad is twofold. One issue involves the possibility of interfering with experiments designed to hunt for life on another world. If a terrestrial microbe hitched a ride, it could be picked up by the mission's tests, causing scientists to wrongly believe they had discovered alien life. [6 Most Likely Places for Alien Life in the Solar System]

Such a mistake, while disappointing in itself, could also affect how people around the world view scientists, participants in the April 24 session said.

"If NASA spent $5 billion on a life-detection mission and discovered life from Earth, then the loss of public trust would really shoot up," said Linda Billings, a researcher at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

A terrestrial organism traveling to another world via spacecraft also has the potential to infect that world, overwhelming or driving out any existing life. Many of the commenters who didn't think Martian microbes would flourish on Earth also seemed to believe that terrestrial life would be unlikely to thrive on the Red Planet, because of the considerable differences between the two worlds' environments.

But that's just speculation. And even if life from one world wouldn't last long on the other, it's important to keep things clean for the sake of understanding science, researchers at the session said.

"We need to save the Mars questions for Mars and the Earth questions for Earth," one person in the room said.

The desire to keep Mars free from Earth-based contamination could have serious implications when it comes to sending people to the Red Planet. Humans don't live in isolation; we carry a fleet of micro-organisms everywhere we go, and these tiny creatures outnumber our own cells about 10 to 1.

"If we send humans anywhere, we contaminate the planet, because we're dead if we're sterile," said one commentator. So, human exploration could lead to a conflict with planetary protection.

Not everyone agrees that humans would automatically contaminate the Red Planet, however. John Rummel, an astrobiologist at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and former NASA Planetary Protection Officer, told the room that he doesn't think there has to be a conflict.

"I don't think it's an all-or-nothing game," Rummel told Space.com. Human exploration could be incremental, he said, with the first explorers making only the most cautious steps outside of their habitation.

NASA and other government agencies aren't the only organizations that seek to put boots on Mars. For example, last September, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk unveiled his company's plan to help establish a million-person city on the Red Planet.

Even if such efforts succeed, they won't necessarily cause native Mars life to be swamped by microbes from Earth, Rummel said — especially if Red Planet organisms exist only underground, where they're shielded from harmful radiation.

"Musk is not going to have tourists interfering with the deep Martian subsurface," Rummel said.

    Meet India’s UFO Hunters

    about the video
In January 2017, the CIA declassified and shared 930,000 documents on its website. One of these included a document from 1968 detailing six UFO sightings in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Indian UFO sightings thereafter have been sporadic compared to countries like the US and Russia. But this relative paucity does not deter a small (but determined) community of UFO investigators in India. What does the work of an Indian UFOlogist entail? What drives them? What are the strangest cases they’ve encountered, and how has their search impacted other areas of their lives? These are their stories. (Hindustan Times)

Author searches for truth in 'Fifty Shades of Greys'

    Szymanski

The truth is out there, and Raymond Szymanski is searching for it.

Szymanski is the author of “Fifty Shades of Greys,” a book about his search for evidence of alien encounters. He will be speaking this afternoon at a panel for the Mutual UFO Network of North Carolina at the Courtyard Winston-Salem at Hanes Mall.

The book, published last year, examines several prominent cases in UFO lore, including the belief that “Hangar 18” at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was once used to store evidence of extraterrestrials.

“I worked 38 years and nine months at Wright-Patterson,” said Szymanski, a retired engineer who worked with computer software for weapons systems among other duties at the base, having started there in 1973. He may not have seen definitive proof of aliens during his time there, but he saw and heard enough to spark a lasting interest in the subject.

Several years ago, even before he retired, he began researching various UFO sightings and alleged abduction cases, traveling to sites, interviewing witnesses, and doing first-person field research. “I’ve come up with, I think, some compelling theories based on what I’ve found,” he said.

Lakita Adams, the state director of MUFON-NC, said that she appreciates Szymanski’s approach to his investigations. “This is a subject filled with speculation and disinformation,” she said. “As an investigator who pursues evidence and data, I appreciate Ray’s approach of following the facts.”

His book’s title is a tongue-in-cheek play on “Fifty Shades of Grey” — for the uninitiated, “greys” are a commonly reported type of aliens (think bald heads, grey skin and spindly bodies).

“It’s an accounting of my quest for the truth about extraterrestrial visitation,” Szymanski said, “but I wanted to write it in a manner that might be more open to people.” So he added “a vein of humor,” both to the title and to the book overall, sharing misadventures he had along the way during his research as well as more serious findings.

He speaks about twice a month to groups of UFO enthusiasts, having recently finished a five-city tour. He is about to take a break from tours and interviews to work on two more books. One will focus on the stories people have shared with him at his appearances, and the other — which he describes “my third and final; I think a trilogy will be good” — has more of his field research.

Szymanski says he believes he has “solved the mystery of Hangar 18,” but he is saving that revelation for another day.

“It took a couple of years and divine intervention,” he said, “but I believe I’ve nailed it.”

Video: UFO Crosses Sky Over California Desert on Wednesday Afternoon, May 3, 2017.

"Frank Zappa" films clearest UFO video in years. Are they here because of DPRK's Atomic Program?

The clearest UFO video footage in years coincides with a study that says California is a UFO hotspot

One thing is for sure: This one is no fake. Who could create such a bright light in the sky for 2 minutes? Seeing is believing, and this is the clearest UFO video we have seen in years.

A UFO flying over head in the California Desert at 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, has been posted to Youtube by a user calling himself Frank Zappa. The famous musician has been dead for ten years, so it seems unlikely that Zappa himself posted it. Though Zappa did name his daughter, the subject of "Valley Girl," Moon Unit. But I digress.

Meanwhile, California is reported to be the site of most UFO sightings. "UFO Sightings Desk Reference," a new book on reported UFO sightings, found that California had the most reports of visual encounters with unidentified objects in the United States. This includes hundreds of reported sightings, CBS San Francisco reports.

The book analyzed more than 120,000 reports of UFOs and found more Californians believed they'd come in contact with extraterrestrial life than anyone else in the country.

Was the appearance connected in anyway with international Star Wars day, May the 4th Be With You, celebrated Thursday? Ok, that one's a stretch. But nuclear weapons testing in North Korea may be connected, actually. After all, 1950's atomic bomb testing in Nevada attracted hundreds of alien spacecraft. The DPRK has accelerated it's program recently, with similar effect. Was the UFO a missile from Vandenberg, or even the DPRK?

"We found that UFOs were sighted in every county in the United States. Every county had at least one sighting sometime in the past 15 years," the book's co-author, Cheryl Costa, explained.

According to Costa, Santa Clara County topped the list in Northern California with 569 reported sightings. Alameda County was second with 518, while San Francisco trailed with 327, reports CBS News

So what happened to the Zappa UFO after it left visual range? Did it crash in the desert and create yet another crater?

Gargantuan craters are seen pockmarking the rest of the solar system other than Earth. Recent studies of such impact craters on the moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars suggested that meteor strikes could trigger volcanic activity.

Film of the Zappa UFO is embedded above and lasts for just over 2 minutes.

However, over the course of millions of years, geological activity has eradicated the vast majority of ancient impact craters on Earth. This has limited research into whether meteor strikes could also set off volcanism on Earth, said study senior author Balz Kamber, a geochemist in Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, and his colleagues.

As for Zappa: In May 1982, Frank Zappa released Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch, which featured his biggest selling single ever, the Grammy Award-nominated song "Valley Girl" (topping out at No. 32 on the Billboard charts).

In her improvised lyrics to the song, Zappa's daughter Moon Unit satirized the patois of teenage girls from the San Fernando Valley, which popularized many "Valspeak" expressions such as "gag me with a spoon", "fer sure, fer sure", "grody to the max", and "barf out".

    The Issue Of Proof

Columnist Cheryl Costa examines the proof she has of her findings

Since I started this column, and since we released our book, UFO Sightings Desk Reference, various people have asked me, “Cheryl, where’s your proof that these sightings are really alien space crafts?”

My answer can only be, “I have none.” Of course this raises the question: Does this diminish the facts of our compiled statistics book of 121,036 reported UFO sightings from 2001-2015? I say, “Not in the least.”

Our objective was simply to report the magnitude of the UFO sighting reports for a 15-year period. Our other objective was to demonstrate that UFO sightings have been on the rise for some time, despite reports that reports have been declining since the 1980s.

I’m simply reporting what 121,036 Americans have stated; I can’t confirm or deny the facts of their sightings. Although, before we start dismissing these reports as bogus or misidentifications, we need to consider the bottom line. During an average month in the past 15 years, people in the United States have reported as little as handfuls to hundreds of UFO sightings.

Experienced investigators will tell you that only a small percentage or sighting reports are hoaxes or delusional people. Some sightings turn out to be natural phenomena, while others might be misidentification of things like experimental military aircrafts.

Then there is the large number of sightings that just can’t be explained. The experts I’ve spoken to say the number of unexplained exotic sightings sits in the 7-20 percent range. “Exotic” means not from Earth or not from our Dimensional Reality. The ultra-conservative investigators say the exotic stuff is about 4 percent of the overall data.

Let’s look at that 4 percent for a minute. We compiled 121,036 sightings from our 15-year reporting sample. If we take 4 percent of 121,036, that equals 4,841 potentially exotic sightings. If we divide 4,841 by 15 years, we get an average of about 323 per year. If we divide 323 of these unique unexplained sightings by 12 months, we get an average of 30 exotic sightings a month. Of course, that number could be a whole lot bigger. The possibility of 30 off-world or other dimensional-reality crafts per month for the past 15 years is something to sit up and take notice of.

Our UFO Sightings Desk Reference was intended to simply quantify the degree of the UFO sighting phenomena in the United States. We had neither the resources nor the expertise to vet every single one of those 121,036 sighting reports. We simply counted them all and reported our findings in the form of charts and tables. In effect, we produced a UFO census for all 50 states and their districts.

But the question, like a broken record, that keeps coming back is the question of “proof,” and that, as they say, is “the rub!” Was it our obligation to provide proof? No! As I said previously, that wasn’t our objective, and proof of alien crafts weren’t within the bounds of our resources or expertise to produce. What we have done is dispel the notion that UFO sightings are on the decline, when in fact, they are on the rise. In addition, we made at least half a dozen previously unknown discoveries supported by the numbers. So as researchers we achieved the objective we set out to answer and then some.

“But, Cheryl, you have no proof!” OK, so whose job is it to research data like ours and take it to the next level, maybe even achieve a level of proof, which some folks are demanding? In the scientific world, to verify the validity of a piece of scientific information, it must be evaluated. The usually accepted scholarly process can be one or all of the following:

    • Research articles can be published in academic, peer reviewed journals.
    • Or published in official government agency reports and journals.
    • Or get validation by some independent scholarly institution, such as various countries’ National Academies of Sciences or various non-profit research organizations.
    • Lastly, traditional, major and respected newspapers are considered reliable.

It shouldn’t be a declaration, “You have no proof.” It should be a question: “Why haven’t the scholarly and scientific institutions investigated the UFO question since the 1970s?”  We have proved it hasn’t gone away.

If you are interested in joining a monthly UFO discussion group in the Onondaga County area, drop Cheryl an email at Blogger@CherylCosta.com. If you have a UFO sighting to report, you can use either one of the two national database services: nuforc.org or mufon.com. Both services respect confidentiality. Follow me on Twitter @American_Skies.

WHY WOULD ALIENS EVEN BOTHER WITH EARTH?

THE PROS AND CONS OF A TRIP TO THE PLANET WE CALL HOME

As an astrobiologist I spend a lot of my time working in the lab with samples from some of the most extreme places on Earth, investigating how life might survive on other worlds in our solar system and what signs of their existence we could detect. If there is biology beyond the Earth, the vast majority of life in the Galaxy will be microbial—hardy single-celled life forms that tolerate a much greater range of conditions than more complex organisms can. To be honest, my own point of view is pretty pessimistic. Don’t get me wrong—if the Earth received an alien tweet tomorrow, or some other text message beamed at us by radio or laser pulse, then I’d be absolutely thrilled. So far, though, we’ve seen no convincing evidence of other civilizations among the stars in our skies.

But let’s say, just for the sake of argument, that there are one or more star-faring alien civilizations in the Milky Way. We’re all familiar with Hollywood’s darker depictions of what aliens might do when they come to the Earth: zapping the White House, harvesting humanity for food like a herd of cattle, or sucking our oceans dry. These scenarios make great films, but don’t really stand up to rational scrutiny. So let’s run through a thought experiment on what reasons aliens might possibly have to visit the Earth, not because I reckon we need to ready our defenses or assemble a welcoming party, but because I think considering these possibilities is a great way of exploring many of the core themes of the science of astrobiology.

    I. Aliens come to Earth to enslave humanity or for breeding partners

Alien races enslaving each other is a common trope of many science fiction universes. While enslavement of defeated enemies or other vulnerable populations has regrettably been a common feature of our history on Earth, it’s hard to see why a species with the capability of voyaging between the stars, and therefore having already demonstrated the mastery of a highly advanced level of machinery and of marshaling energy resources, would have any need for slaves. Constructing robots, or other forms of automation or mechanization, would be a far more effective solution for labor—people are feeble in comparison, harder to fix, and need to be fed.

Likewise, the idea of an alien species needing humans for breeding doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny. The act of sexual reproduction, on a genetic level, involves the combination of  DNA from two individuals. So on the most fundamental level, for an alien race to be compatible with us, they would need not only to use the same polymer, deoxyribonucleic acid, as the storage molecule for their genetic information, but also to use the same four “letters” for their genetic alphabet (and not other purine and pyrimidine bases that exist in chemistry), and the same coding system for translating those sequences of genetic letters into proteins, and the same organizational structure of the DNA strands into chromosomes, and so on. There is a lot of ongoing research on whether extraterrestrial life is likely to use DNA, or what molecular alternatives there might be, but it is a huge stretch to expect alien life to be that similar to human genetics. Humans can’t even interbreed with our closest evolutionary relatives on Earth, the chimpanzees (indeed, this is the basis of the definition for different species—two organisms which are not able to reproduce fertile offspring), and so it is overwhelmingly improbable that an alien life form from a completely different evolutionary lineage would be compatible.

II. Aliens come to Earth to harvest us for food

If aliens wouldn’t be bothered about enslaving or breeding with us, might they simply be coming to Earth for a drive-by meal? The question of whether an alien biochemistry would be able to digest us as food actually comes down to some very fundamental features of the molecules of life. Our cells are made up of various organic molecules: proteins (polymers of amino acids), nucleic acids DNA and RNA (polymers of bases and sugars), and membranes of phospholipids. And so for making more cells for reproduction, growth and repair of our bodies we need a source of these simple building blocks. We eat other animals or plants and our digestive system breaks them down into their component amino acids, sugars, and fatty acids, which we then use as the building blocks for ourselves. So in order to derive any useful nutrition from eating a human, an alien monster would need to be based on very similar biochemistry, and thus have the enzymes needed for processing the molecules we are built from.

A whole variety of amino acids, sugars and fatty molecules are actually found in certain meteorites, having been produced by astrochemistry in outer space, and so maybe extraterrestrial life would be based on the same basic building blocks as us. But there’s another, very interesting subtlety here. Simple organic molecules like amino acids and sugars can exist in two different forms, mirror images of each other (in the same way your two hands are similar shapes but can’t be placed exactly one on top of the other). These two versions are known as enantiomers, and it turns out that all life on Earth uses only left-handed amino acids and right-handed sugars, whereas non-living chemistry produces even mixtures of both kinds.

So if we do find traces of amino acids on Mars, one very good way of telling whether these organic molecules are the relics of ancient Martian life or are just the product of astrochemistry would be to check if they are mostly left- or right-handed forms, or just an even mixture. The most exciting discovery would be to detect traces of ancient bacteria on Mars and to find that they employ the opposite forms of organic molecules to us: right-handed amino acids or left-handed sugars, because then we would know for sure that this life was definitely extraterrestrial and not merely contamination from Earth. So here’s a fascinating thought: alien invaders could be based on exactly the same organic molecules (amino acids, sugars, etc.), but they still wouldn’t gain any nutrition from eating us as the origins of life on their own planet settled on the opposite enantiomers. We’d be mirror images of each other, on a molecular level.

III. Aliens come to Earth to suck our oceans dry

If alien marauders would need to have an essentially identical biochemistry to bother culling us for food, maybe they come to Earth to harvest some other vital substance. All life on Earth is water-based; H2O is astonishingly versatile as a solvent and participant in biochemistry and so it seems likely that extraterrestrial life would also be based on this compound. Perhaps, then, aliens may be drawn to the Earth for our wonderfully wet oceans and seas and rivers and lakes—to siphon off our hydrological cycle.

The problem with this supposition is that there are loads of far better sources of water in space. In fact, we think that when Earth first formed from the swirling disc of gas and dust around the proto-Sun it was actually a pretty dry planet; the water to fill our oceans was delivered later by a barrage of comets and asteroids from the colder, outer regions of the solar system. In fact, Europa, one of the moons orbiting Jupiter, contains more liquid water in the global ocean beneath its frozen surface than our entire planet—Europa, and not Earth, is the Waterworld of our solar system. So if you were an alien voyaging between star systems in need of a drink, you’d have access to a far greater amount of water in the icy moons and cometary halo of the outer solar system. You’d also find it much more practical to operate in deep space, rather than trying to suck up the oceans against the gravitational pull of the planet Earth.

IV. Aliens come to Earth for some other raw material

If not water, then maybe there’s some other natural resource that aliens might invade the Earth to exploit. Perhaps they intend to wipe away our cities and begin strip-mining the crust of the planet for ores to extract metals and build more vast spaceships. But in fact, because the Earth formed from a molten state with iron sinking down to the core, our planet’s crust is actually pretty depleted of useful metals like iron, nickel, platinum, tungsten and gold. And as with the water, it’s hard to see why aliens would bother extracting material against the gravity of the Earth when the asteroids are composed of the same basic rocky stuff. In fact, some asteroids are believed to be essentially pure lumps of metal—they were once the cores of protoplanets that were smashed apart again by the colossal collisions in the early history of the solar system. Several companies are already proposing to launch asteroid mining operations to exploit these exceedingly valuable resources.

Perhaps, though, there might be a reason that our hypothetical aliens would come to mine the Earth. While it’s true that the asteroids and Earth, and other terrestrial planets, are made up of essentially the same rocky material, the Earth isn’t simply an inert lump; it’s a very active, dynamic place. In particular, the thin crust of the Earth is fractured into separate shards that are continually sliding around on top of the hot gooey mantle, rubbing alongside each other, crunching head-on, subducting one beneath another, or pulling apart to create fresh crust. This is the churning process of plate tectonics.

So far, astronomers have already found over four and a half thousand extrasolar planets—worlds orbiting other stars—and the expectation now is that there are billions of rocky planets in our Galaxy. But here’s a thought right on the forefront of current planetary science and astrobiology. Perhaps terrestrial planets are common, but terrestrial planets with plate tectonics are rare. Plate tectonics is thought to be vital for keeping the Earth’s climate stable over billions of years to allow complex life like ours to evolve, and it also acts to concentrate certain metals into rich ores. It seems likely that only a small proportion of terrestrial planets undergo plate tectonics (neither Mars nor Venus does). So perhaps an alien civilization would come to the Earth for our exceptional plate tectonics and concentration of particular metals, and the fact that the same tectonics had also enabled a rich biosphere to develop would be merely an inconvenience.

    V. Aliens come to Earth looking for a new home

There is a considerable amount of rocky real estate in the galaxy for aliens to consider moving home to, but a terrestrial planet might need to offer more than just a habitable zone locale to be able to support complex life. Communities of hardy microbial cells thriving off inorganic energy deep underground might be able to survive pretty much anywhere, but complex life requires much narrower environmental conditions on the surface. Various features of the Earth beyond our warm oceans are thought to be crucial to maintaining a stable surface environment for geological time periods. These include plate tectonics acting to regulate the climate, a large moon preventing the spin axis of the planet from wobbling too much, and a global magnetic field for deflecting aside the solar wind and preventing the atmosphere being blown away into space. For these reasons, maybe planets like the Earth are something of a rarity, and so present particularly desirable targets for alien colonization.

But while it’s true that such worlds may well be required for complex life to evolve in the first place, once an intelligent species becomes technologically advanced enough to travel between the stars it’s also likely to be able to artificially manage a planet’s environment. For example, many people are already starting to talk seriously about “mega-engineering” or “geoengineering” projects to avoid the worst effects of global warming on Earth, and we’ve worked out, at least in broad terms so far, how further in the future we could “terraform” Mars to create a habitable environment for humans to live on the surface without needing spacesuits. Indeed, the very fact that Earth is already teeming with its own life (most of which is tenacious microbes that affect the chemistry of the atmosphere and oceans) may well be a hindrance to an alien species, with its own quirky biochemistry, looking for somewhere to colonize. It may well be easier to find a terrestrial world that hasn’t already developed life of its own, and install its own biosphere on an empty planet.

VI. Aliens come to the Earth for the Earthlings

To my mind, then, the enormous amounts of time and energy that are likely to be necessary for traveling between the stars in a galaxy, and the fact that raw materials can be sought elsewhere more practically, would rule out aliens coming to the Earth simply to take something we have. I think we can safely rest assured that even if intelligent alien species do exist in our galaxy, they are not about to appear in our skies with an invasion fleet to subjugate humanity and begin stripping our world. Perhaps the thing that may attract only extraterrestrials to Earth is us. I suspect that if aliens did come to Earth, it would be as researchers: biologists, anthropologists, linguists, keen to understand the peculiar workings of life on Earth, to meet humanity and learn of our art, music, culture, languages, philosophies and religions.

If aliens do come to pay us a visit, there’s one final way that the movies have probably got it all wrong. The laws of physics (at least as we currently understand them—after all, in 100 years we may have worked out how to build a practical warp drive or stretch stable wormholes through the fabric of space-time) strongly constrain movement across the vast gulfs between stars. To make the journey time from one star system to the next anything less than scores of millennia, you need to accelerate your spaceship to a fair fraction of the speed of light. The greater the mass you need to accelerate, the greater the energy required, so you really want to keep your starships as small and light as possible.

Intelligent life forms like humans are inherently bulky things, particularly when you want to send a team of them along with all the life support machinery and regeneration systems for keeping them alive in space. But a much more plausible alternative presents itself. Perhaps it’s unrealistic to expect ET to go through all the discomfort and bother of actually voyaging in person across the oceans of interstellar space to far-flung worlds, but instead to travel by proxy. To cross the galaxy not by encasing wet, vulnerable biological organisms within complex life-support technology, but athe hardened, durable technology itself. With a more complete understanding of how the human brain works—the neuronal wiring diagram and other interactions that give rise to intelligence and consciousness—it stands to reason that we could not only simulate this perfectly within hardware to construct an AI (artificial intelligence), but also potentially upload the consciousness of a living person into a computer.

Contained within a capsule of miniaturized electronics and systems for self-repair you’d not only be essentially immortal, but also incredibly compact and light and much better suited for inter- stellar travel. In this sense, perhaps most life in the galaxy isn’t carbon-based (organic), but silicon-based. I don’t mean this in the sense of silicoid monsters imagined living inside volcanoes in The X-Files or Star Trek, but as the hardware supporting complex sentient computer programs. Silicon life would be second generation, existing only because it has been designed and created by a precursor organic species, which itself evolved naturally on a habitable world.

For these reasons, it strikes me that if there is intelligent alien life out there in our galaxy, they almost certainly wouldn’t pay us a visit in person in huge city-sized motherships, but by sending their sentient robots as emissaries. But how would they know we’re here in the first place? Humanity has been leaking (or deliberately transmitting) radio waves out into space for roughly a century,

So an alien civilization running a SETI program with sensitive radio telescopes could detect us. But this radio bubble announcing our technological emergence, centered on the Earth and expanding out into space at light speed, is only around 200 light years across. That is a minuscule region of space in the galaxy as a whole, a disc 100,000 light years in diameter, and so even if the galaxy does contain other intelligent life forms, they would likely still be oblivious to our recent appearance. But although humanity has only been detectably civilized for a century, the Earth itself has been conspicuously alive for many hundreds of millions of years, and this links to one of the hottest topics in current astrobiology. Life on Earth, and specifically photosynthetic life such as plants and cyanobacteria that grow by absorbing the energy of sunlight and splitting water, has been releasing oxygen as a waste gas at such a high rate that it has built up in the atmosphere, first to just a few per cent, and today constituting a fifth of the Earth’s air. Oxygen is a very reactive gas, and the only reason it has been able to accumulate in the atmosphere is that it is constantly being replenished by living organisms. In fact, the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere is thought to be so unusual to the geochemistry of a planet that astrobiologists consider it to be a biosignature of life (specifically if oxygen and a reduced gas like methane are both present).

We are currently on the verge of building space-based telescopes that use spectroscopy to read the composition of the atmospheres of terrestrial exoplanets, and so survey the night sky for signs of life. And we’re only relative newcomers on the galactic scene. There’s nothing special about this exact moment in galactic history, and life on another planet could have evolved intelligence millions of years ago and used their own telescopes to look out for planets displaying the telltale sign of an oxygen-rich atmosphere. But apparently, as far as we can tell the fact that the Earth is obviously sporting biology has not prompted anyone to say hello.

This is a very curious observation, and to my mind could be down to two equally intriguing possibilities. The fact that Earth’s oxygen-rich atmosphere has apparently attracted no one’s attention may simply be because life is so rare that there is not a single other civilization in the galaxy with us to have their attention drawn. Or perhaps planets with an oxygen-rich atmosphere are so staggeringly common that the Earth just doesn’t stand out among the masses. In the first possibility we are solitary and lonely intelligent beings in the galaxy; in the second, life is absolutely rife in the cosmos. Both, to me, are equally profound realizations. And the most exciting aspect is that within your and my lifetime we will have launched our atmosphere-reading space telescopes and the science of astrobiology will have been able to tell which one is right.

What a time to be an intelligent life form on Earth!

Mystery of comet 67P's oxygen solved – providing new tool in search for alien life

Molecular oxygen surrounding comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has long puzzled scientists.

    Léa SurugueBy

t's been one of the most puzzling phenomena identified in space in recent years, but now scientists have demonstrated how comets can produce oxygen and this could help in the search for life outside of Earth.

In 2015, a team of scientists had been studying the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko with the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft. First observed in 1969, this comet belongs to the Jupiter Family comets, as its orbit is controlled by Jupiter's gravity.

This was an unexpected discovery. Indeed, molecular oxygen in space is highly unstable – oxygen molecules tend to pair up with hydrogen to make water, or with carbon to make carbon dioxide. Up to now, molecular oxygen had only been identified twice in space, in star-forming nebulas.

At the time, scientists had attempted to explain the phenomenon by proposing that the molecular oxygen on 67P might have thawed from its surface after having been frozen inside the comet at the time of its formation about 4.6 billion years ago.

But some scientists disagreed with this theory, highlighting that oxygen should nevertheless have reacted with other chemicals over such a long period of time.

    Chemical engineering to study space

In a study now published in the journal Nature Communications, a team has come up with a new hypothesis for how molecular oxygen around 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is produced.

Lead study author Konstantinos P Giapis is not an astronomer. He is a professor of chemical engineering at California Institute of Technology, who's primary interest lies in finding out new ways to fabricate microprocessors in computers. In the research, his shows how the work he has been conducting for years can shed new light on comets' oxygen mystery.

"I started to take an interest in space and was looking for places where ions would be accelerated against surfaces," Giapis said. "After looking at measurements made on Rosetta's comet, in particular regarding the energies of the water molecules hitting the comet, it all clicked. What I've been studying for years is happening right here on this comet."

Having studied throughout his career how fast-moving molecules collide with surfaces and create chemical reactions, the scientist has shown experimentally, in his lab, that similar processes might be happening on the comet 67P.

    ESA
Comet 67PESA/Rosetta/MPS for OSIRIS Team MPS/UPD/LAM/IAA/SSO/INTA/UPM/DASP/IDA

He suggests that water vapour molecules might be streaming off the comet as it is heated by the Sun. These water molecules then become ionised (or charged) by ultraviolet light from the sun before being pushed back towards the comet by solar winds.

The molecules then hit the comet's surface – which contains oxygen bound in materials such as rust and sand – and pick up oxygen atoms from these surfaces, leading to the production of molecular oxygen.

Giapis explained: "This original chemistry mechanism is based on the seldom-considered class of Eley-Rideal reactions, which occur when fast-moving molecules, water in this case, collide with surfaces and extract atoms residing there, forming new molecules. All necessary conditions for such reactions exist on comet 67P."

The study's findings may provide an interesting tool for scientists looking for life outside Earth.Indeed, it is possible that some exoplanets may be producing oxygen in a similar fashion, without having life on their surface. This may influence how researchers search for signs of life on these planets in the future.

I Found Hot Red Lips In The NASA Archives, May 8, 2017, Photos, UFO Sighting News.

Date of discovery: May 8, 2017
    Location of discovery: Carena Constellation
    Source NASA photo:
I just thought you would like to see these hot lips I found today. This formation of red lips is located in the Carena Constellation about 16,000 light years from Earth. The white star at the center of the red lips ring is a sun called V385 Carinae. Its about 35X the size of our own sun and the red lips were formed from the explosion of that sun. Or in other words, the inside of a sun has now become the outside.

Depending on the level of evolution and age of species, it would be possible for some species to be so high technologically that they could control a sun, or even cause it to explode with a special design like ruby lips.

It doesn't really matter if aliens made it on purpose, or if it was made by nature. Its just awesome knowing that hot lips are a thing in this universe.

What Was the Westall UFO? – A Theory and Some Evidence In Support

Above image: Westall researcher Shane Ryan, from the “Podcast UFO” website.

This is all an insoluble mystery to me,” said I.  “It grows darker instead of clearer.”
“On the contrary,” he answered, “it clears every instant.  I only require a few missing links to have an entirely connected case.”

–Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes, in The Sign of the Four

A few days ago, I felt almost like Holmes.  The 50-year-old mystery of the mass UFO sighting over Westall High School, in the Melbourne (Australia) suburb of Clayton, seemed to be clearing every instant.  Add “a few missing links,” and one of the most important and instructive sightings in UFO history would yield its secrets.

I posted on Westall four weeks ago, in my review of the 2010 Australian documentary “Westall ’66.”  Until I watched the film, I’d never heard of the Westall UFO.  It’s indeed flown under the radar–pun more or less intended–as Shane Ryan, the Canberra teacher and investigator featured in the documentary, put it in a 2013 interview.  Jerry Clark’s monumental UFO Encyclopedia, the second edition of which was published in 1998 and includes six articles by Bill Chalker on the Australian UFO scene, has not a word to say about Westall. But now the Dr. Watson feeling is creeping over me.  As if Westall has depths I’d barely suspected.

In my post, I suggested a theory of what happened at the high school that day in 1966, near the beginning of the Australian school year.  Here are my thoughts, in a slightly more developed and explicit form:

Yes, something unusual was seen in the sky late on the morning of April 6, autumn in the southern hemisphere.  It may have been a weather balloon or it may have been a “target drogue” used by the Australian military to practice air-to-air firing, as two explanations floated at the time had it.  Possibly both were involved.

Whatever the object was, it wasn’t especially dramatic.  If you and I had been there, we might not even have noticed it.

The witnesses’ view of the object seems to have been blocked for a time by the tall pines of the area called “the Grange,” just to the south of the school.  But no, the UFO was not seen to land among those trees; and the idea that it was responsible for flattened areas of grass in the Grange–which one UFOlogist who investigated the sighting said could have been caused by strong winds over the previous week–was conjecture after the fact.

Yes, there was excitement among the students at Westall High (which included the grades that we’d now think of as middle school), and it seems to have been concentrated among the younger kids.  The excitement was apparently enough to call forth a special assembly, at which Westall’s stern headmaster Frank Samberle made sure the boys and girls knew there are no flying saucers, and what they saw was just a weather balloon.

But no, the mass stampede from the school into the Grange, so vividly depicted in “Westall ’66”–“all the students were just running all over the place, hysterical”; “like a whole lot of zebras being terrified by crocodiles,” to quote two of the witnesses–didn’t happen.

But then how to account for the memories of the dozens of intelligent, articulate, obviously sincere–not to mention courageous–men and women who’d been Westall students in the 1960s, whom Shane Ryan interviewed in the course of his investigation from 2005 onward?  Several of these people tell their stories in “Westall ’66,” and it’s hard not to come away with the impression of a dramatic, multiply witnessed “close encounter of the second kind,” suppressed by military authorities in collusion with the Westall headmaster.

My hypothesis: these recollections are heavily tinctured with memories or fantasies of forbidden adolescent activities at the Grange—a favored place for “illicit smoking and steamy liaisons,” according to Ryan—for which the UFO and its suppression became a tangible representation.

Or, as I sometimes like to put it:  the stimulus, the trigger for the UFO was something in the sky.  The UFO came from inside.

The mystery of that UFO is a mystery of the human soul.  The twists of human memory–not random, not unmeaningful–are an essential part of that mystery.

It’s a testament to Shane Ryan’s open-mindedness and generosity that, despite our considerable differences of interpretation, he reached out to me and guided me toward rich sources of information.  These include the page of the Facebook group Westall Flying Saucer Incident–an excellent resource which I’d encourage all my readers to join–and the treasure trove of data posted to the Project 1947 website by veteran Australian UFOlogist Keith Basterfield.  This in turn led me to posts on Basterfield’s “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena – Scientific Research” blog, arguing for the Westall UFO’s having been a high-altitude balloon and insisting on the crucial distinction between 1966 sources on the incident vs. post-2005 recollections of it.

What Was the Westall UFO? – A Theory and Some Evidence In Support
    Australian UFOlogist Keith Basterfield.

Thanks to the gracious support of these two researchers, I’ve found much data that “confirms my diagnosis, as you doctors express it” (Holmes to Watson, in The Sign of the Four).

Also some that goes against it.  But we’ll get to that presently.

“Pro” item #1:  Basterfield’s notes from a tape recording, transferred to CD by the Special Collections of the library of the University of Arizona (Tucson), of Dr. James E. McDonald’s interview with Westall science teacher Andrew Greenwood, 28 June 1967.  (Basterfield, Source 15.)  This is a precious resource: a near-contemporary account of the incident by an adult observer.  Nearly all the testimony in “Westall ’66” is from people who were students at the time, and what they remembered after a 40-year interval.  With a few possible exceptions soon to be noted, Greenwood was the only grownup who actually saw the UFO.

“AG said that a girl student raced into class saying ‘Flying saucer outside.’  She left the room, then 5-10 minutes later it was morning recess time, so AG went outside to take a look. … He couldn’t see the object at first due to the lack of contrast (the kids pointed it out to him).”  The object was gray against a blue-gray sky; “if it wasn’t pointed out to you, you might not see it.”  (This was the explanation Greenwood gave for the Dandenong Journal‘s inability to find anyone in the area who’d noticed it.)

“The object was airborne at all times,” and although “at one stage the object disappeared behind a tall row of pine trees,” there’s no hint that Greenwood saw it land or come anywhere close to doing that.  The landed UFO, the “close encounter of the second kind,” belongs to the psychological rather than the physical reality of the episode.

(Much of Australian UFOlogist Bill Chalker’s argument against a “balloon” explanation for Westall loses its force, once we doubt that the thing was ever seen to come to earth.)

Two other teachers witnessed at least part of the sighting, according to what Greenwood told McDonald: a phys ed teacher named Jeanette Muir, an English teacher named Claude Miller.  Significantly, Greenwood made no mention of Barbara Robins, a chemistry teacher who appears in “Westall ’66” as having taken multiple photos of the object, only to have her camera confiscated by Samblebe in the company of two uniformed men from outside the school.  (We’ll come back to her in a moment.)

“AG saw students go over the fence while he watched the object.”  Yes, a few students must have done that.  But if anything like the stampede portrayed in “Westall ’66” had taken place, that surely would have been Greenwood’s most vivid memory of the incident, given that he was among those charged with maintaining order at the school.

Also unmentioned in Greenwood’s testimony to McDonald:  the visit paid to his home one week later by two Royal Australian Air Force officers, which he was to describe to Shane Ryan many years later.  These officers threatened Greenwood under the Official Secrets Act, threatened to spread rumors he was an alcoholic (“Westall ’66”), threatened him with the loss of his teaching career if he talked about what he’d seen (Ryan in the 2013 interview).  More than 40 years after the event, speaking to Ryan, Greenwood remembered that ominous visit.  Speaking with McDonald hardly more than a year afterward, he’d evidently forgotten it.  Or else he didn’t think it was worth mentioning.

1966 was Greenwood’s first year teaching at Westall. Apparently it was also his last.  (In Australia, with its southern-hemisphere seasons, the academic year is nearly the same as the calendar year, running “from late January or early February to early or mid-December.”  December-January is summer vacation.)  When he spoke with McDonald in June 1967, he was teaching science at a place called Haileybury College.

It’s hard not to think that there were substantial tensions between Greenwood and Samblebe, who was then in his first year as headmaster (Basterfield, Source 24)–under considerable pressure, no doubt, to establish his authority–and that the UFO served as vehicle for these tensions.  To which the fledgling teacher soon fell victim.

“Pro” item #2: the chemistry teacher Barbara Robins.  On May 9, I posted a query about her on the Westall Flying Saucer Incident Facebook page, and received the following reply from Shane Ryan:

Several witnesses recall that it was Andrew Greenwood who took the photos, and that the camera was confiscated from him. Andrew says that it was not him. Barbara, unfortunately, is now unwell, and when she was interviewed several years ago by ‘Westall ’66’ director and writer Rosie Jones, she could no longer recall any details of the Westall Incident – only that she had been there that year and that something had happened. So, although there are some witness memories of a camera being taken away, this has not been substantiated.

To me, it’s completely inconceivable that Barbara Robins would have forgotten so dramatic and outrageous a happening as this, her camera seized by uniformed strangers with her headmaster’s collusion.  I have to suppose that the “confiscated camera”–Greenwood’s? Robins’?–is another feature to be assigned to the psychological, not historical, truth of the incident.

(And the other two teachers mentioned by Greenwood, Jeanette Muir and Claude Miller?  In his reply to my May 9 query, Ryan wrote that Jeanette died before she could be interviewed.  Miller also?)

“Pro” item #3:  Basterfield’s “Source 2” is a report form of the Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society, filled out on 7 April 1966 by or on behalf of a Westall student named Joy Tighe.  It describes “circular 2 UFOs flying in various directions”at a 45-degree elevation, and speaks of there having been “flattened waist high grass for 10 yds diameter 600 yds from school.”  The UFO (singular?) “turned edge & disappeared fast.”  Joy Tighe plainly assumed that the flattened grass was caused by one or both of the UFOs.

But if she or any of her schoolmates thought they had seen it come down–wouldn’t her report have made some reference to that?

“Pro” item #4: the mysterious “Tanya.”

She’s remembered by one of the women interviewed in “Westall ’66” as a girl who’d raced after the landed UFO in the Grange, got to it first, saw it landed on the ground.  She went back to the school afterward but somehow suffered a breakdown, was taken off in an ambulance.  “That was the last time I ever saw her.”

(“I was trying to keep up when suddenly Tanya came racing back towards me, petrified,” runs an even more dramatic version of the story that appeared in April 2016 in the Woman’s Day magazine, the link provided on the Westall Facebook page.  “She was screaming and crying, talking gibberish.  She ran straight past me like I wasn’t there. … I watched as paramedics tried to get Tanya into the ambulance.  She didn’t want to go and put up a fight.  I could still hear her screams as it drove away.  That was the last time I saw her.”)

A query posted to the Facebook page on April 9 asks “what happened to the girl who ran ahead of her friends and got right up to one of the crafts … fainted, was taken away by ambulance and was never seen again.”  There’s a remarkable response from one Lance Brown:

“In that 2 month period I’d been at school Tanya had been quite notorious to say the least. But when she vanished I didn’t relate it to the ufo, more her wild ways.”

Questions posed to this Lance Brown, by Basterfield and by Ryan, seem to have gotten no further responses.  My guess is that he figured he’d already said too much, and clammed up.  There’s indeed a suppression that operates in UFO matters, but not necessarily of their unearthly, otherworldly aspects.  It may be precisely their all-too-earthly aspect, like what the UFO stands for in the fate of this “notorious” young lady–“much faster” than the other girls, as one witness put it–that calls for concealment.

Thus far the evidence that “confirms my diagnosis, as you doctors express it.” It’s a fine diagnosis, don’t you think?

But alas!  It was T. H. Huxley (1825-95) who defined “the great tragedy of science” as “the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact.”  And there’s other evidence that isn’t quite so cooperative.

Evidence that suggests that what I’ve assumed to be a legend, gestating through the four decades that elapsed between when the UFO supposedly appeared over Westall High School and when Shane Ryan began his inquiries, was in full-blown existence by the summer–sorry, in Australia it’s the winter–of 1966.  At the latest.

This evidence appeared in a school publication called The Clayton Calendar for “Term One,” 1966, reproduced as Basterfield’s “Source 10.”  A photograph of the publication’s cover, taken from Wikipedia, is posted below.

I’ll talk about this evidence two weeks from now.  And see whether my “beautiful hypothesis” is really slain, or if it might respond to resuscitation.

UFO moving at unreal speed caught by Drone at 400 ft over New Port Richey, Florida

A drone enthusiast sent his drone up about 400 ft to film the 1000 acres fire burning about 5 miles from his home in New Port Richey, Florida, on May 6, 2017.

Upon reviewing the footage on his big screen TV it just happened that he pause the video to see an unidentified flying object.

Checking the video again, by doing play, pause and rewind he saw the UFO coming into picture from the right side moving within 0.3 seconds to the left before it disappeared.

He was able to take 5 still images of the UFO showing that the object really moved at unreal speed.

The drone enthusiast has uploaded his original video to Mufon reported under case 83554

Mysterious Deaths and the Black Eyed Kids

One very scary phenomenon that has captured the imagination, instilled fear, and generated a large amount of unsettling reports over the years is that of the menacing, extremely creepy Black Eyed Kids, also called simply BEKs, along with their counterparts the Black Eyed Adults. While each and every case is truly bizarre and unnerving, others go even farther, showing that not only are these mysterious entities good at scaring us, but that they on some occasions kill. Scattered amongst the many, many reports of encounters with Black Eyed Kids are those that seem to show a rather malevolent tendency for witnesses to meet with tragic misfortune and death, further casting a wicked shadow over them.

Black Eyed Kids have been reported for decades, and generally follow a certain frightening pattern. The children, usually in pairs but not always, appear mostly in rural or sparsely populated areas. They typically appear as normal children from afar, but a closer inspection will reveal that they have a sickly, pale pallor to them, and that their eyes are completely dark pools of black, without any discernible iris, akin to the eyes of a shark. Although the tales may vary in their details, these mysterious entities are almost always described as exuding an intense wave of dread and panic, and their eyes are said to have a certain disturbing, sinister, and hypnotic quality to them.

Almost every report of BEKs involve the children begging to be let into homes or vehicles. These requests often start out innocent and polite enough, usually innocently asking for a ride or to use a phone, but not surprisingly due to their off-putting black eyes and clinging aura of fear the homeowner or driver will be reluctant to comply. This will cause the strange kids to become increasingly demanding, desperate, and foul-tempered, sometimes even violent, such as banging or scratching on house or car doors. Some witnesses claim that the Black Eyed Kids have the ability to sow confusion and addle the minds of their victims, possibly to make them more suggestible and inclined to bend to their wishes. One commonality to every report is that they cannot force their way in unless specifically invited, and in most cases when the menacing children eventually give up and leave the victim is left exasperated, confused, and with the profound sense that they have just avoided some sort of dire fate.

While this may all seem terrifying enough, the victim is usually left in one piece and none the worse for wear, but this is not always the case, and some more chilling accounts seem to point to these enigmatic creatures having the potential ability to do great harm. For instance, there are reports that seem to answer the question of just what exactly happens if one is to actually give in to their demands and let them in. One such report was apparently e-mailed by a frightened woman in a quiet, rural town in Vermont to the website Week in Weird, in which she claims to have let the kids inside, with disastrous consequences.

The woman claimed that in 2015 she had been sleeping at home with her husband one night when there was a sudden, very loud knock on the front door of the small rural home at approximately 2 a.m. The woman at first thought it was possibly someone who had broken down or gotten stuck on the nearby unpaved road, as there was a snowstorm raging outside at the time. A look outside the window showed that the house’s motion triggered light was on and that there were indeed footprints in the snow, but there was no sign of any car on the road nor even any evidence that any had recently driven by.

The woman woke her husband and they went downstairs to investigate, where they saw that someone was casting a shadow from outside of the front door. Still thinking it was someone in trouble, they warily opened the door to see two young children of around 8 years of age, a boy and a girl, standing in the snow outside. The two children were described as not at all dressed for winter and sporting outdated, odd- looking haircuts, and both were gazing down at the ground. Interestingly, rather than worry for them and offer help, the couple immediately felt deeply unnerved and somewhat repulsed, and rather than letting them in out of the cold merely asked where their parents were, to which the two creepy kids replied “They’ll be here soon.”

Despite the unnerving quality of the kids and their odd demeanor, the woman and her husband nevertheless became convinced that they must have gotten lost in the woods, and considering that they were woefully inappropriately dressed for the increasingly frigid weather, the husband and wife guided them in out of the snowstorm despite a strong nagging instinct at the back of their minds not to do so. Once inside, the kids were prepared something hot to drink and asked about what had happened to them and where they had come from, but every question was responded to with the kids simply saying, “Our parents will be here soon.” The woman began to notice that their voices had a sort of strange melodic quality to them, and also that for such young children they seemed to be not perturbed or nervous in the slightest to be in a stranger’s house, which somehow added to a growing sense of menace and fear she was feeling. There was also the fact that the family’s cats, normally very friendly, were now hiding, and when she went to pet one of them it hissed and growled at her. The witness described what happened next thus:

When I walked back into the living room the kids were sitting on the couch as still as can be but my husband was holding his head in his hands. I asked him what wrong and he just said that he felt very dizzy all of a sudden but that he was fine. I turned back to the children to give them their cocoa, but when they looked at me I gasped. It took everything inside of me not to drop the mugs and run away. When they looked at me their eyes were completely black. They had no whites just giant black pupils.

When they saw that I was scared they stood up and asked if they could use the bathroom. I tried to be as composed as I could be and showed them down the hall. They went into the bathroom together and I hurried back to my husband to ask him if he had seen their eyes. He had seen them too and said that it looked like his brothers badly bruised eyes after a car accident. We were in the middle of talking about whose children they could be when my husbands nose started to bleed. He’d never had nosebleeds as long as I had known him. I just knew inside myself that this had something to do with the kids in the bathroom and I started crying while I ran to get [my husband] some tissues.

At this point the woman claims that the power in the house abruptly cut out left them in darkness, which provoked a short scream from the husband. She then ran back towards the living room and was startled to see the two kids standing motionless in the hallway. After a moment of heavy silence, one of the Black Eyed Children announced “Our parents are here,” after which they went to the front door, opened it, and walked back out into the snowstorm without closing it behind them. Looking outside, the woman could see through the snow a dark car out on the road with two tall men dressed all in black, who stared at the house before getting into their vehicle and driving off. The power would blink back on not long after.

Although this is already quite disturbing, things would only get worse for the couple. In the ensuing months three of their cats went missing without a trace and another was found one day dead in a pool of blood in the middle of the living room floor, apparently killed by some sort of massive internal hemorrhaging. Even worse, the husband became afflicted with constant mysterious nosebleeds and was also diagnosed with a rare form of very aggressive and terminal skin cancer. The woman herself also claimed that she was experiencing frequent nosebleeds that had no discernible cause as well as sudden spells of dizziness, and that her health had dramatically deteriorated since her meeting with the Black Eyed Kids. She ends the mail with a haunting message, saying:

I know that all of this is because I let the Black Eyed Children into my home. We’ve told everyone we could about the strange kids that showed up that night but no one else saw them and some laugh at how scared we were of the “Mennonite kids” but we know what we saw. I wish my husband had never opened the door. Feel free to publish this as a warning to others about the Black Eyed Kids. My advice would be to lock your doors, call the police, and wait for morning. Don’t make the same mistake that I did.

This particular report spurred other people to come in with their own reports of Black Eyed Kids causing physical harm or death. In one of the accounts, it is claimed that a friend had taken a road trip to Arcata, California to visit a friend and along the way he had stopped at a bar to have a drink before retiring to his hotel. While he was there, he allegedly struck up a conversation with an attractive woman working at the bar, who ended up inviting him back to her place at the end of the night. He ended up leaving his car there at the bar and going with the woman to her rather secluded house, which caused him to get a little nervous as he had no idea where he was and the area seemed rather remote and surrounded by wilderness.

Nevertheless, he went through with going into the residence and the two of them had sex. However, at some point during the night the man got up to go to the kitchen for a glass of water and claims that he saw several “small, frightening-looking children” milling about and wandering around aimlessly, and that he had been startled to see that they all had pitch black eyes. In the morning, the woman from the night before kicked the man out and made him walk the whole way back to where he had left his car. In addition to being quite understandably unsettled by the whole bizarre experience, the previously healthy and athletic young man then allegedly was diagnosed with severe bladder cancer and died within 6 months. According to the one who gave the report, the friend had insisted up to the end that the Black Eyed Kids he had seen and that mysterious woman, possibly their caretaker, had been to blame for his condition.

Black Eyed Kids have apparently been responsible for other mysterious deaths as well. In 1998 there was a report by a man named Jon Northwood, who claims that he was on his way to his car in a parking garage after a meeting, when one of the other men who had been at the meeting, named Doug, begged him to drive him around the block a few times. Jon asked Doug why he was so desperate to go drive around the block, to which the visibly shaken man claimed that there was a group of weird looking kids hanging around his own car and he wanted to go away until they left. Apparently they had asked for a ride earlier, but Doug had refused and they had not left since. Despite the oddity of his request, Jon let Doug in and when they approached the car in question there was indeed a group of three decidedly creepy looking kids milling about it dressed in what appeared to be gothic style clothing. There was also an abrupt feeling of stifling panic and irrational fear that overcame them, as if something terrible was about to happen.

Oddly, as they passed Jon claims that he had the sudden, uncontrollable compulsion to stop his car. When he did so, the youngest of the kids, a girl who appeared to be around 10 years old, came right up to the vehicle and said innocently “It’s scary out there all alone, and we just wanted a ride home.” It was at this point that they could see that the kids had eyes that were solid pitch black, which was jarring enough to snap Jon out of his trance. He launched into action, putting the car in reverse and reportedly sending the vehicle squealing back to get away from them as the kids gave chase. They sped through the parking garage and managed to make it to the first floor, where they allegedly found that one of the kids had inexplicably managed to make it there ahead of them. They managed to roar past the boy and go tearing off down the road, after which the strong sense of suffocating dread they had felt subsided.

A short while later, they got up the courage to go back and see if the kids were still there or not, and pleasantly found them to be nowhere to be seen. Doug thanked Jon and got into his car to head home, pulling out to drive off with Jon right behind him. At this point he claimed that the insidious sensation of menace came crashing down upon him once again, and when Doug rushed through a yellow light his car was apparently hit by a speeding truck, killing him. When Jon looked back he said he could see the three Black Eyed Children standing not far away in the shadows, as if watching the whole deadly spectacle.

Sometimes it’s not the Black Eyed Kids, but rather Black Eyed Adults that kill, and another witness claims that these entities killed her boyfriend. The woman, who calls herself Esme, claims that in 2012 she had been living in a rural part of Bristol, England with her boyfriend. One day she claims that they had headed out for work at around 10:30 a.m. and were walking along a secluded path when they came across 4 very odd looking people coming towards them. Three were very pale, with totally black eyes, and skin that “didn’t seem to fit them,” while another was reported as being a very beautiful black woman with normal eyes. One of them, a young man of around 18 years of age, was described as having a “troll-like underbite” with what looked like protruding fangs. Oddly, the strange group was managing to completely avoid stepping in any puddles from a recent heavy rain even without looking down at their feet. Esme would say of the surreal sight:

The troll-like teenager looked dead ahead with a really angry expression on his face, and the girl looked happy but vacant, like she was hypnotized, just staring into space walking in front of him. Their clothes were modern, waterproof coats and walking boots. Apart from the girl who wasn’t wearing walking boots like she’d intended to come to the woods, she was wearing flat pumps which nobody in their right mind would wear on that path in flood season. When they had passed us we looked at each other immediately and said at the same time, “that was so weird!”. We both felt the strangeness emanating off of them, like a total sense of foreboding.

Esme goes on to claim that exactly one year after this strange encounter, her boyfriend died by drowning in a flooded part of the river adjacent to the path they had been on. According to police, apparently the boyfriend had gone in to save a girl he called “Sally,” even though no one else was there. Some locals tried to help him, but he had purportedly refused to be rescued until he rescued the girl. He would eventually drown, and when authorities searched they found only one body and no sign of this “Sally” he had been looking for, concluding that he had probably hallucinated her since he was a known drug user. Was this a vision implanted in his head by those strange entities they had encountered the previous year or merely a drug-induced hallucination? We will probably never know.

What are the Black Eyed Kids and What do they want? There have been many ideas on their nature, such as that they are some sort of demons, aliens, ghosts, or even vampires. Others think they have a connection with the equally enigmatic Men in Black, perhaps even being their children, or that they are something else totally beyond our comprehension. Still others think it is all mere urban legend or spooky lore. No one really knows for sure, but one thing we do know is that creepy reports of encounters with the Black Eyed Kids keep coming in and show no sign of waning. As disturbing and freaky as many of these accounts are, it is interesting to note that sometimes they are even more threatening, leading to disease and death. We may never know just what lies behind the Black Eyed Kids phenomenon, but deadly accounts such as these show that if they are real then they are possibly even more sinister than they already seem.

Rot From The Stars: “The Molten Meteor”, and Real Life Blobs From Outer Space

In 1958, a rather atypical horror film appeared before moviegoing audiences. It featured no vampires, wolf men, or creatures strewn together from the parts of the deceased, brought back to life by mad science.

No, this monster was just a mound of carnivorous jelly from space… and the more it ate, the bigger it got.

The Blob, which features what is still regarded as one of the most unusual movie monsters of all time, tells the tale of an alien gob of jelly from space that begins to feed on the citizens of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, growing larger throughout the film. Originally titled The Molten Meteor, it is said that one of the film’s actresses, Kay Linaker, was overheard referring to the film’s extraterrestrial subject simply as, “the blob”, and apparently the name stuck.

But where, precisely, did the idea for the film come from?

According to Den of Geek, “Accounts seem to vary as to who came up with the idea for The Blob.” One story attributes its conception to Irvine H. Millgate, who according to Kim Newman, wanted to “make a movie monster that is not a guy dressed up in a suit… some kind of a form that’s never been done before.”

Or in the case of “The Molten Meteor”, perhaps something with no definite form whatsoever!

After several days of brainstorming, the idea finally emerged that a mineral that “can absorb your flesh” would be a good idea, and the rest, as they say, is history.

There is, however, an interesting real-life Fortean connection here, which bears remarkable similarity to the story outlined in The Blob and its successive remakes over the years.

In Welsh folklore, there had been an unusual phenomenon known as “pwdre ser” (meaning, essentially, “rot from the stars”). This, according to some accounts, was believed to be the literal star-stuff that fell to Earth after a meteor was seen streaking through the sky, after which a gelatinous slime would occasionally be found in fields amidst grass and undergrowth.

    Star Jelly?

Reports of this “star slime” date back to at least the 14th century, and although many descriptions describe it as apparently being an earthly substance, in its various names it nonetheless appears to associate the the mystery jellies with shooting stars; English names used since the Middle Ages include star-falling (also “star-fallen”), star-jelly, star-shot, star-slime, star-slough, star-slubber, and star-slutch.

The unusual, and often sudden appearances of large amounts of “mystery slime” have been the stuff of Fortean fodder for decades, with a number of notable incidents involving strange deposits of slimy material of unknown origin over fairly large areas. Whether this is the same phenomenon as the “pwdre ser” of yore is uncertain, as many of the modern “slime rains” and other anomalous falls are often attributed to industrial activities in the general vicinity of the incidents.

One notable example occurred in 1979 near Frisco, Texas, when Sybil Christian found several purplish colored mounds of jelly on her lawn (interestingly, this discovery was made coinciding with the height of the Perseid meteor showers that year). The explanation behind the blobs on Christian’s lawn, it was believed at the time, lay behind a variety of caustic soda used to clean lead impurities at a battery processing plant nearby; however, some have contested this explanation, asking how mounds of the soda-byproduct would have made their way all the way from the factory outside town, and onto Christian’s lawn.

While even some of the more famous “mystery blob” reports like the Frisco, Texas incident appear to have been connected loosely with meteors, the question remains: did any of these real-life reports of “molten meteors” help inspire the making of The Blob?

According to a 2009 San Francisco Gate article, there is indeed a more definitive connection between the so-called “pwdre ser” and The Blob films:

Gelatinous meteors, also known as the Pwdre Ser phenomenon, are rare but not unknown. On September 26, 1950, Patrolmen John Collins and Joseph Keenan saw one of these things land at the corner of Vare Boulevard and 26th Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The light-emitting blob was also observed by Sgt. Joseph Cook and Patrolman James Cooper and was seen oozing its way up a telephone pole. This incident became the basis for Steve McQueen’s 1958 horror movie, The Blob.

Although the article quoted here (featured as part of a regular column called “UFO Round Up”) was taken offline, an archived version can be found here.

If accurate, the incident it describes does seem to confirm what many suspected all along: that one of the weirdest sci-fi monsters of all time has further history in the annals of Ufology and Forteana. With little doubt, old Charles Fort himself probably would have found this little historical footnote rather amusing.

World’s Best UFO and Alien Hotspots Revealed

    UFO hotspots

Spotting aliens can be tricky, but heading to the ET hot spots will give someone the best chance of getting a close encounter.

Some people would not want to meet extraterrestrials, but others consider reaching to beings beyond Earth a lifelong dream.

The following are places known for UFO sightings.

    Area 51 in Neva, U.S.

Many UFO enthusiasts believe that the remains of a UFO involved in the famous Roswell Incident are hidden inside Area 51, a highly classified Air Force base.

    The Nullarbor, Australia

Many travelers in this Australian Outback have claimed UFOs chased them while driving down the remote area’s empty roads.

    The Molyobka Triangle in Russia

Also known as the M Triangle, the place is one of the UFO hotspots in the world with locals in the area have claimed to notice strange lights and symbols in the sky as well as seeing translucent beings.  The M Triangle is located in the Ural mountains of Russia.

Roswell, New Mexico in the U.S.

UFO spotting has never been exciting than in Roswell for most alien enthusiasts. The site is where an alleged alien spaceship had crashed in 1947. Shady government officials allegedly transported the remains and debris of the incident to Area 51.

    Warminster, England

The place boasts the mysterious stone circles of Avebury and Stonehenge in Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. In the 1960s and 1970s, Warminster got the attention of the world when strange sounds were heard in the area. UFO fanatics from around the world visited the area, which has also become famous recently with unexplained crop circles.

    El Enladrillado in Chile

After a flurry of alien sightings had taken place in El Enladrillado, Chile’s tourist board formed the first UFO trail of the country. The 30 km trail passes through the Andes, from where it spotted until it allegedly landed at El Enladrillado.

    Wycliffe Well in Australia

Many called the Wycliffe Well as the UFO capital of Australia. Locals have been claiming to have spotted lights in the sky frequently.

    Bonnybridge, Scotland

UFO experts have been calling the location of Bonnybridge as The Falkirk Triangle, which is located between Stirling, Fife and the outskirts of Edinburg. More than 300 sightings are reported each year around this area.
