Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.
This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

30 seconden: dat is wat het lot van de dinosaurussen 65 miljoenen jaar geleden wel eens bezegeld zou kunnen hebben. Een team van Amerikaanse en Engelse wetenschappers heeft berekend dat als de meteoriet - die toen een einde maakte aan drie kwart van het leven op aarde - seconden vroeger of later was ingeslagen, de wereld er nu wel eens heel anders had kunnen uitzien. Vermoedelijk zonder ons.
Het was zowat de grootste verdwijntruc uit de geschiedenis van onze planeet. Wetenschappers van de University of Texas en Imperial College Londen vroegen zich af hoe een meteoriet - die in vergelijking met de aarde niet eens zo groot was - toch zo een gigantische impact kon hebben. In verhouding was het alsof een korrel zand tegen een bowlingbal was gevlogen.
"De meteoriet raakte de aarde gewoon op een heel ongelukkige plaats", aldus geofysicaprofessor Sean Gullick van de University of Texas in Austin. "Ze verpulverde een dikke rotslaag vol zwavel, waardoor die verdampte in de atmosfeer en het licht van de zon tegenhield. Daardoor werd de aarde in een globale winter gedompeld. Exit de dinosauriërs. Na 150 miljoen jaar heerschappij."
Oceaan Maar was de meteoriet 30 seconden vroeger of later ingeslagen, zou hij wel eens veel minder schade berokkend kunnen hebben. En zouden de dinosaurussen nog kunnen hebben geleefd. Het ruimtepuin zou dan in de oceaan terechtgekomen zijn, wat een veel kleinere impact gehad zou hebben.
De wetenschappers boorden voor hun onderzoek ongeveer anderhalve kilometer diep in de bodem op de plek waar de meteoriet insloeg, vlakbij het Mexicaanse schiereiland Yucatan: de Chicxulubkrater in de Golf van Mexico. En ze vonden voor de allereerste keer bewijs voor de these. "Volgens de stalen moet er meer dan 100 miljard ton zwavel in de atmosfeer terecht zijn gekomen, plus het roet van de branden die uitbraken", aldus professor Joanna Morgan van het Imperial College Londen. "Dat was genoeg om de planeet een decennium lang af te koelen en bijna al het bestaande leven uit te roeien. Maar het bood ook kansen aan nieuwe soorten. Zoals wij."
De wetenschappers konden ook bepalen dat de meteoriet 15 kilometer breed moet zijn geweest en onze aarde geraakt moet hebben met 65.000 kilometer per uur. Ze kwamen ook tot nieuwe inzichten in hoe dergelijke inslagen mee de toekomst van planeten bepaalt en condities kunnen creëren voor het ontstaan van nieuw leven. Het gaf ook een nieuwe kijk op hoe het oppervlak van een planeet zich bijna als vloeistof gedraagt als een meteoriet inslaat, terwijl tot nu toe eerder gedacht werd dat inslagen de oppervlakte vervormen, doordat de bodem rond de krater wegsmelt.
De resultaten van het onderzoek zijn te zien in de nieuwe documentaire 'The Day the Dinosaurs Died', die morgenavond, 15 mei te zien is op BBC2 om 22 uur.
De Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA verschuift de eerste test met de nieuwe ruimtecapsule van november 2018 naar ten vroegste 2019. De Orion moet op een dag mensen naar en van Mars vervoeren.
De eerste onbemande test loopt vertraging op nadat het Witte Huis een haalbaarheidsstudie naar de kosten, veiligheid en technische vereisten heeft gevraagd. Ook de tweede test, EM-2, die ten vroegste in augustus 2021 is gepland, heeft wellicht vertraging. Dan zal de capsule voor het eerst astronauten vervoeren.
Het Amerikaanse ruimtevaartbureau werkt momenteel ook aan het Space Launch System (SLS), dat de Orion naar de Maan en Mars moet slingeren. Het wordt de krachtigste draagraket ooit.
Het Europese ruimtevaartbureau ESA heeft de dienstmodule voor de Orion ontwikkeld. De Orion en het SLS zijn het antwoord op het op stal zetten van de spaceshuttles eerder dit decennium, in de nasleep van het dodelijke ongeluk met het ruimteveer Columbia op 1 februari 2003.

Een mysterieus voorwerp op de maan is mogelijk ‘een tank’, aldus UFO-onderzoekers. Of het is een ‘vreemd gevormde rots’. Dat meldt Fox News.
YouTube-kanaal SecureTeam 10 heeft een video geplaatst waarin naar verluidt een ‘buitenaardse tank’ is te zien die achtergelaten is door een onbekende beschaving.
“Er is een tankachtig object ontdekt op de maan,” zei SecureTeam 10 in de video. “Eromheen bevinden zich naar wat lijkt een soort ruïnes.”
Sporen
De onderzoekers, die al vele andere UFO-gerelateerde video’s hebben gemaakt, merkten op dat het ook een vreemd gevormde rots kan zijn.
In de video zijn ook sporen op de maan te zien, alleen het is niet duidelijk of er een verband is tussen de sporen en de vermeende tank.
Vreemde activiteit
SecureTeam 10 heeft bijna 900.000 abonnees op YouTube en plaatst vaak video’s die gaan over complottheorieën.
De organisatie beschrijft zichzelf als de bron van nieuws over UFO-waarnemingen, informatie over de cover-up rond de ruimtevaart en vreemde activiteit op aarde en daarbuiten.

UFO blogger Scott Waring hailed it as an excellent example of an alien spaceship.
He wrote: “It is seen on the other side of the solar panels in the far distance.
“It looks like it is the size of a city bus and is disc-shaped.”
He also claimed that if you regularly watch the live feed of the space station you are guaranteed to see a UFO.
It’s just the latest “alien” sighting at the ISS.
Last month, outlandish claims emerged of a NASA alien cover up over accusations the US space agency cuts the feed to the station when a UFO approaches.

On the other hand, someone is entirely confident that aliens have been visiting humanity. He is a Canadian researcher and nuclear physicist.
Stanton Friedman believes that aliens have been here on Earth many times, but they simply don’t have plans yet to reveal their existence.
The Canadian scientist stressed that they have sufficient proof to prove beyond doubt that aliens have visited the Earth, but the information was kept secret from the public to prevent chaos. Friedman explained that there would be mass panic and great concern if the information is made available in public.
However, Stanton pointed out that it is easy for aliens to make themselves seen and they will bound to do it.
The 82-year-old scientist has been leading the UFO movement and claiming he has worked several secret investigations.
His theory states that aliens choose to remain in shadows until they are ready to colonize earthlings and prevent humans to populate other planets. Friedman explains that this is because humans have proven to be evil.
Another reason that Friedman noted is on political grounds. He says that the Earth is a race among U.S., Russia, and China. Anyone of them can copy the technology of aliens and will automatically become the most powerful.

Rolling Stone guitarist’s ex-wife Jo Wood revealed in a chat with Peter Andre that Ronnie Wood saw a UFO while on holiday in Brazil. The guitarist, 69, saw the spaceship hovered over the sea in shining strange lights, which freaked him out, according to his 62-year-old ex-wife Jo, who split from the rocker in 2008.
Jo said that they were in Recife in Brazil with their children. Ronnie was reportedly out wandering around when he started calling the attention of his ex-wife to come and see something weird above the sea.

In October or November of 1966, J. R. “Milo” Ponce, a deputy sheriff with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department, received a phone call at around midnight from the sheriff’s department dispatcher, George Rapp. The dispatcher stated that someone had called in to report a group of “disturbed” men standing alongside Farm to Market Highway 490, north of Edinburg, Texas, near Laguna Seca Road.

HI Ken : On the 8th of May 2017 at 1:31 PM I spotted a UFO that was going vertically up into the sky at great speed. I quickly took two photographs of the object. Then at 1:44 PM I witnessed the same object coming back down vertically heading in the direction from where it had originally come from. I managed to take another two photographs that once again show the object in flight.
The photographs were taken on the 8th of May 2017 at Newton Abbot Devon England. Photograph one and two were taken at 1:31 PM while Photograph three and four were taken at 1:44 PM. Having witnessed many UFO on the same flight path going back and forth it leads me to believe that there must be an alien base somewhere in the vicinity. The area from where this UFO are emerging seems to be Decoy Country Park. Decoy Country Park has a Very Deep lake that was once a clay quarry. Ball clay was found at Decoy in the late 19th century and the clay was both mined and quarried at the site from 1850 until 1965. When the quarrying ceased the pit quickly filled with water and became the deep lake that we see today.
I believe that these objects are going in and out of this lake undetected. I know for a fact that these alien craft have the ability to cloak and become completely invisible to the naked eye, furthermore they have the ability to enter the water without making a splash or any sound. I believe that there could be an alien base or a portal at the bottom of Decoy lake and I also believe this is were the alien crafts are emerging from. Decoy lake would be a great place to hide and be undetected. Two years ago while investigating this area for any evidence of this I had an encounter with a Pleiadian being. For me this is proof that aliens are in this area and that there is a base in the vicinity. All the Best John
I’m talking to my friend and just enjoying the evening, we’re paddling, you know, we get to that, we get to the point where we have to make the curve and hit the last stretch. When we came around the curve, made that last stretch, I’m looking straight on to the source of the lights and the source of the lights was not on the bank or on the water’s edge, the source of the lights was set back into the woods. And at a 100 yards it was, it clearly looked odd to me. It was clearly something there, a piece of equipment, a machine, an object, something fairly large but it certainly wasn’t fishermen along the bank fishing. Okay, what is this? I don’t know but we’re going to find out because we’re drifting and slowly paddling closer to it. I would say probably at 75 yards out I can clearly tell this was a conical shaped object. Why was it conical because I could clearly see the side of it, the cut off top, the bottom, it was conical in a curve because on the right-hand side, my view looking straight ahead, on the right-hand side, it had three stationary lights lit up. I would call them bars or strips, bars, one two three clearly defining the curve of the object. They were amber in color, amber as in the same exact color that you find on your car in your driveway, your signal light. And they were just lit up. The machine was whitish, glowing. The forest floor all around it had an aura of a fog, a haze, something that you would see maybe as a special effect that would occur with the dry ice, the evaporation of the CO2 but yet there was no movement to it. There was just a white foggy aura over the earth. At 50 yards I can clearly see two entities… What it was, I don’t know, but it was two, not one, but two… two figurines that were hiding behind the machine. I’ll call it a machine. They were hiding because they were clearly looking out the side, peering out the side, taking a peek and watching us. They were watching us because at 50 yards I had started to communicate what my curiosity was. What is this? What am I looking at here? So I yelled out to them. ‘How’s it going tonight? How are you doing?’ Nothing. Dead silent. It was so dead silent that I didn’t hear a cricket. I didn’t hear a hear a frog. I didn’t hear anything.
The whole environment around us is dead silent. Calm, warm, muggy evening. The two figurines, as I yelled out to them, at that point in time, have ferried behind the machine and made a quick duck behind the machine to hide. Okay, I don’t know what this is going on? I don’t even know what I’m looking at? This is odd. It was odd. What is this machine? What was it doing there? What did I just witness? I just witnessed two figurines, pale, white, with dark black shiny eyes They were larger than mine is the most identifying feature I can make to what I just witnessed. My friend sitting in front of me is witnessing this exact same thing. From a hundred yards to the 50-yard event I had been communicating with my friend and all the way up asking, ‘What is this? What the hell is this?’ I badgered this poor guy so much that he snapped back, I mean, he said, ‘I don’t know what it is, shut up!’ He was nervous. What were we watching. As we got closer, now, I’m within thirty 30 yards. The current is taking me towards this beaver dam. I’m no longer paddling. There’s no need to paddle. My eyes are focused on something and I can’t make out what it is and I, once again, the land is aglow, the machine is sitting there. I would say it’s about eight to nine feet tall. It clearly stood on at least three legs that I could tell. It had an additional feature to it. It had light. I call it light. It had an object on top of it and on the left hand side, as I’m looking at it, would be on the top left, during my shout out to whatever it is, I’m shouting out to with no reply, at a certain point in time, I couldn’t tell you if it was 50 yards. I’ll say 50 yards. It was a little bit of a distance.”
THE STRANGE LIGHT
After the figurines had ducked back in to hide, this object, on top of the machine I’ll call it, it made a complete 180 and turned around, nice and slow, and shined right at us which appeared to me to be a typical spotlight, a floodlight of some sort. Only problem was, it was shining right at us. This round white light source but there is no light shining on our canoe, our bodies, on the water. I don’t know how but we were not lit up despite this light shining on us. This did raise a few hackles on our neck, I guess. This is not natural for this type of thing to happen. I’m curious but I’m also respectful not to, you know, butt in where I don’t belong. I’m assuming whatever’s going on maybe I don’t need to know. Maybe it’s none of my business. Am I seeing something beyond my comprehension, what’s on this earth? Is this entity not human? This machine is nothing like I’ve ever seen in my life. What is it? No clue. Yet it’s there. It is in front of me big as day. It’s silent. No communication. As we drift closer now, we can’t be more than 30 yards from this machine in the woods. The canoe makes its way through the current and finally lands on top of the washed-out beaver dam.
THE WAVING ENTITY ENCOUNTER
At that point in time, you know, we actually literally have to get out of the canoe, just kind of drag it over a little bit, so we could carry on. At that point in time, before we did this, now I’m standing there, you know, we’re just stuck there for a while, just looking at it and, standing right there, just came out of nowhere, standing right there, about 15 feet across for me, to where the water is, to where the bank is, is now standing there, one of those entities that we saw earlier, standing right there 15 feet from me. It looks like a figurine. No identifiable clothes. No identifiable anything. It looks like a figurine. I can only describe it as an artist’s model doll that they use, where they are posed to draw with, this smooth normal shape figurine. This is exactly what it looked like. At 15 feet I should have been able to make out great detail of clothes, of what it was, unfortunately, we’re in pitch-black darkness, the light source of the machine, the glowing light, is 30 yards back, the figurine is half that distance. It’s 15 feet right in front of me yet it’s facing me and what all I’m seeing is the dark side of it much like you would at a campfire sitting around with your friend; you two could all see each other’s faces, but if you were to get up and turn and face away from the fire to talk to an incoming incoming friend, they probably wouldn’t see your face or be able to make out who you were because you are now black. There’s no light shining on you. This unfortunately was the situation for me. It was right there 15 feet away yet I’m looking at just its outline against the light backdrop and it’s just this figurine shape; no identifiable clothes, no hats, no shorts, sleeve shirt, sleeves, no pants that I could tell. He’s smooth, very defined figurine. The figurine made an attempt to communicate with us at this time.
Okay, so, during this peculiarity, as I’ll call it, I’m a mechanic by trade, I’m the tradesman, worked on all types of equipment. I can’t tell you I’ve ever seen anything that quite looked like this object, this machine, nothing that I know of in the world. Never seen anything like it what it could possibly be used for? It was a conical shaped machine of some sort. Back to our friends, our figurine entities who were hiding and that from us, who showed apprehension, I would say, I would call it, didn’t reply to us like a human being would. Who wouldn’t shout, who wouldn’t shout back if you’re only 30 yards away as I’m yelling out to you. I’m just a fisherman in a canoe with a friend, fishing, you could be anybody in the woods at a campsite or whatever it is you’re doing. Perhaps you were doing something you shouldn’t have been doing. I couldn’t tell you if anything like that was going on. My story is, I think, it has much more going on than that, but at that point time we had reached that Beaver Dam. We were stuck there. We had to get out and leave. I’m looking at an angle. I’m standing here in a canoe and I’m looking back at an angle, this figurine is standing right there not 15 feet from me. So all that’s separating me is the water. To them, I’m on 15 feet of water to that bank. It’s looking right at me, of course, like I told you, it is pitch black out and so I could see its perfect figurine outline against the lit background of the machine that it’s, it’s behind it. Well, this is what the figurine did to me and my friend and I take this as a form of communication, I would say. You could see its arm, I’ll call it an arm. It’s appendage. You can clearly tell it had a flat sleek hand, probably had a thumb, you see the V here, it didn’t wave but it’s arm was perpendicular to its torso, very square, like perpendicular, just like this, and this is what it did, in this very slow motion form of a wave, I guess, and its wrist was very articulated, just like, you see what I’m doing with mine, just like this.
That was too much at that point time for my friend to handle. I think he got nervous. This was a very odd experience as you could tell by this story. At that point in time, he had already jumped out of the canoe, yanked it from out from underneath me, I was literally, almost fell into the water, I had the paddle to stop me from going face-first into the into the creek. I grabbed the canoe and yelled some choice words to stop and wait a damn minute and at that time, I had looked back at my figurine friend here, who was now no longer waving. He was just standing there in a very statuesque pose, doing nothing. I never felt I was in any kind of danger. I never felt that I was in trouble. My curiosity overcame all these things but yet something told me to get the hell out of Dodge with my friend and leave which is what we did.
In my recent article, “UFO: From New Mexico to Rendlesham Forest?” I highlighted certain now-declassified New Mexico Police files on cattle-mutilations. Specifically those prepared by Office Gabe Valdez, of Espanola, NM, in the mid-to-late 1970s. It’s well worth noting too, however, the sheer level of high-strangeness that appears in additional papers concerning Valdez’s investigations into the mysterious killings. So, here goes…
On the matter of whether or not the mutilations were the work of cults or natural predators, Valdez said in one particular 1970s report: “Both have been ruled out due to expertise and preciseness and the cost involved to conduct such a sophisticated and secretive operation. It should also be noted that during the spring of 1974 when a tremendous amount of cattle were lost due to heavy snowfalls, the carcasses had been eaten by predators. These carcasses did not resemble the carcasses of the mutilated cows. Investigation has narrowed down to these theories which involve (1) Experimental use of Vitamin B12 and (2) The testing of the lymph node system. During this investigation an intensive study has been made of (3) What is involved in germ warfare testing, and the possible correlation of these 3 factors (germ warfare testing, use of Vitamin B12, testing of the lymph node system).”
A further, very strange, report can be found in Valdez’s files, this time from 1978: “This four year old cross Hereford and Black Angus native cow was found lying on left side with rectum, sex organs, tongue, and ears removed. Pinkish blood from [illegible] was visible, and after two days the blood still had not coagulated. Left front and left rear leg were pulled out of their sockets apparently from the weight of the cow which indicates that it was lifted and dropped back to the ground. The ground around and under the cow was soft and showed indentations where the cow had been dropped. 600 yards away from the cow were the 4-inch circular indentations similar to the ones found at the Manuel Gomez ranch on 4-24-78. This cow had been dead approximately [illegible] hours and was too decomposed to extract samples. This is the first in a series of mutilations in which the cows’ legs are broken. Previously the animals had been lifted from the brisket with a strap. These mutilated animals all dehydrate rapidly (in one or two days).”
As the summer of 1978 progressed, so did the number of reports where elevated radiation readings were found, as Valdez noted in his records: “It is believed that this type of radiation is not harmful to humans, although approximately 7 people who visited the mutilation site complained of nausea and headaches. However, this writer has had no such symptoms after checking approximately 11 mutilations in the past 4 months. Identical mutilations have been taking place all over the Southwest. It is strange that no eye witnesses have come forward or that no accidents [have] occurred. One has to admit that whoever is responsible for the mutilations is very well organized with boundless financing and secrecy. Writer is presently getting equipment through the efforts of Mr. Howard Burgess, Albuquerque, N.M. to detect substances on the cattle which might mark them and be picked up by infra-red rays but not visible to the naked eye.”
A lengthy document, prepared by Forrest S. Putman, the FBI’s Special-Agent-in-Charge at Albuquerque, New Mexico was soon thereafter sent to the FBI’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. It read: “Information furnished to this office by Officer Valdez indicates that the animals are being shot with some type of paralyzing drug and the blood is being drawn from the animal after an injection of an anti-coagulant. It appears that in some instances the cattle’s legs have been broken and helicopters without any identifying numbers have reportedly been seen in the vicinity of these mutilations. Officer Valdez theorizes that clamps are being placed on the cow’s legs and they are being lifted by helicopter to some remote area where the mutilations are taking place and then the animal is returned to its original pasture. The mutilations primarily consist of removal of the tongue, the lymph gland, lower lip and the sexual organs of the animal.
“Much mystery has surrounded these mutilations, but according to witnesses they give the appearance of being very professionally done with a surgical instrument, and according to Valdez, as the years progress, each surgical procedure appears to be more professional. Officer Valdez has advised that in no instance, to his knowledge, are these carcasses ever attacked by predator or scavenger animals, although there are tracks which would indicate that coyotes have been circling the carcass from a distance. Special Agent Putman then informed the Director of the outcome of Valdez’s run-ins with officials.
“He also advised that he has requested Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to conduct investigation for him but until just recently has always been advised that the mutilations were done by predatory animals. Officer Valdez stated that just recently he has been told by two assistants at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory that they were able to determine the type of tranquilizer and blood anti-coagulant that have been utilized.”
Special Agent Putman then demonstrated to headquarters the astonishing scale of the mutilation puzzle: “Officer Valdez stated that Colorado probably has the most mutilations occurring within their State and that over the past four years approximately 30 have occurred in New Mexico. He stated that of these 330, 15 have occurred on Indian Reservations but he did know that many mutilations have gone unreported which have occurred on the Indian reservations because the Indians, particularly in the Pueblos, are extremely superstitious and will not even allow officers in to investigate in some instances. Officer Valdez stated since the outset of these mutilations there have been an estimated 8,000 animals mutilated which would place the loss at approximately $1,000,000.”
Putman additionally advised the director of the FBI that: “It is obvious if mutilations are to be solved there is a need for a coordinated effort so that all material available can be gathered and analyzed and further efforts synchronized. Whether the FBI should assume this role is a matter to be decided. If we are merely to investigate and direct our efforts toward the 15 mutilated cattle on the Indian reservation we, I believe, will be in the same position as the other law enforcement agencies at this time and would be seeking to achieve an almost impossible task.
“It is my belief that if we are to participate in any manner that we should do so fully, although this office and the USA’s office are at a loss to determine what statute our investigative jurisdiction would be in this matter. If we are to act solely as a coordinator or in any other official capacity the sooner we can place this information in the computer bank, the better off we would be and in this regard it would be my recommendation that an expert in the computer field at the Bureau travel to Albuquerque in the very near future so that we can determine what type of information will be needed so that when the invitation for the April conference is submitted from Senator Schmitt’s Office that the surrounding States will be aware of the information that is needed to place in the computer. It should be noted that Senator Schmitt’s Office is coordinating the April conference and will submit the appropriate invitations and with the cooperation of the USA, Mr. Thompson will chair this conference. The FBI will act only as a participant.”
Putman went on to describe the theories that had been advanced to try and explain the phenomenon: “Since this has not been investigated by the FBI in any manner we have no theories whatsoever as to why or what is responsible for these cattle mutilations. Officer Gabe Valdez is very adamant in his opinion that these mutilations are the work of the U. S. Government and that it is some clandestine operation either by the CIA or the Department of Energy and in all probability is connected with some type of research into biological warfare. His main reason for these beliefs is that he feels that he was given the ‘run around’ by Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and they are attempting to cover up this situation. There are also theories that these are cults (religious) of some type of Indian rituals resulting in these mutilations and the wildest theory advanced is that they have some connection with unidentified flying objects.”
In the closing section of his report, Putman said: “If we are to assume an investigative posture into this area, the matter of manpower, of course, becomes a consideration and I am unable to determine at this time the amount of manpower that would be needed to give this our full attention so that a rapid conclusion could be reached. The Bureau is requested to furnish its comments and guidance on this whole situation including, if desired, the Legal Counsel’s assessment of jurisdictional question. An early response would be needed, however, so that we might properly, if requested to do so, obtain the data bank information. If it appears that we are going to become involved in this matter, it is obvious that there would be a large amount of correspondence necessary and Albuquerque would suggest a code name be established of BOVMUT.”
The ultimate outcome was that in 1980, a funded study overseen by a then-retired FBI Special Agent, Kenneth M. Rommel, concluded that, “A perusal of this report reflect it adds nothing new in regard to potential investigation by the Albuquerque FBI of alleged mutilations on Indian lands in New Mexico.”
And that is where matters continue to stand. The FBI was – and still is – officially out of the cattle-mutilation issue. Gabe Valdez, however, continued with his research – right up until the time of his death in 2011.
The search for extraterrestrial life has lately been focused on fast radio bursts (FRBs), short but incredibly powerful spikes in radio signals coming from beyond our own galaxy. While some scientists have optimistically pointed to these as proof of advanced alien civilizations, there are plenty of naturally-occurring astrophysical phenomena which could just as easily create such spikes.
These radio bursts clearly stand out against baseline background noise.
However, a recently-discovered FRB seems to defy the explanations astrophysicists typically assign to such anomalous signals. In a new pre-publication study on arXiv.org, an international body of astronomers searched for the usual follow-up signals across radio, optical, X-ray, gamma-ray, and neutrino emission bands. None were found.
The signal was picked up by radio telescopes at the Parkes Observatory in Australia.
The study’s main author, Emily Petroff from the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, told Gizmodo that this latest radio burst is a complete anomaly. Astronomers all over the world ran various tests to determine what its origin might be, Petroff says, but none of those tests was conclusive:
We spent a lot of time with a lot of telescopes to find anything associated with it. We got new wavelength windows we’ve never gotten before. We looked for high-energy gamma rays and neutrinos…we ruled out some source classes but no detection is a little unhelpful. We’re still trying to figure out where this one came from. It’s not very often in science that you get to work on something that’s so brand new and so unknown that you get to answer the fundamental questions.
This particular radio burst, named FRB 150215, passed through an incredibly dense region of the Milky Way on its way to Earth, possibly beaming through a tiny gap between stars and other bodies along the way.
Such bursts typically only last a few milliseconds.
While some might say this is a sign that the signal was beamed intentionally towards us by an advanced race of aliens, Petroff has been insisting through her Twitter account that she does not believe the radio burst has an alien origin. In all likelihood, there is a perfectly natural explanation for the radio signal such as a gamma ray burst or exploding star, but our telescopes likely missed it just prior to detecting the burst. Still, discovering how to identify and trace the origins of these signals might some day lead to that one lucky discovery which changes everything – or crush our hopes and make us realize just how alone we are.

Astronomers have spotted water vapor and evidence of exotic clouds in the atmosphere of an alien planet known as HAT-P-26b.
The researchers also determined that HAT-P-26b's atmosphere is dominated by hydrogen and helium to a much greater degree than that of Neptune or Uranus, the alien world's closest counterparts in our own solar system in terms of mass.
"This exciting new discovery shows that there is a lot more diversity in the atmospheres of these exoplanets than we have previously thought," David Sing, an astrophysics professor at the University of Exeter in England, said in a statement. [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]
"This 'warm Neptune' is a much smaller planet than those we have been able to characterize in depth, so this new discovery about its atmosphere feels like a big breakthrough in our pursuit to learn more about how solar systems are formed, and how it compares to our own," added Sing, the co-leader of a new study about HAT-P-26b that was published online today (May 11) in the journal Science.

WATER AND ALIEN CLOUDS
HAT-P-26b lies about 430 light-years away from Earth. The alien planetcircles very close to its host star, completing one orbit every 4.2 Earth days. This proximity suggests that HAT-P-26b is tidally locked, showing the same face to its star at all times, said Hannah Wakeford, co-leader of the new study and a postdoctoral researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Sing, Wakeford and their colleagues analyzed observations made by NASA's Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes when HAT-P-26b crossed its parent star's face from the telescopes' perspectives. The planet's atmosphere filtered out certain wavelengths of starlight during these "transits," allowing the study team to identify some of the molecules swirling in HAT-P-26b's air.
One such molecule is water.
"For this mass range, this is the strongest water-absorption feature that we have ever measured," Wakeford told Space.com.
The data also indicate that clouds scud across HAT-P-26b's skies, but relatively deep in the atmosphere; they do not block much of the water-absorption signal, Wakeford said. These clouds are probably made of disodium sulfide, not water vapor like those of Earth, she added.
"This would be a very alien sky that you would be looking at," Wakeford said. "These clouds would cause scattering in all of the colors, so you'd get a kind of scattery, washed-out, gray sky, which is interesting, if you were looking through these clouds."
Ultrabright light streaming from the nearby star would bombard an observer above the clouds, she added. "There's nothing there to really help stop that sunlight from reaching you."
CLUES ABOUT PLANET FORMATION
Using the transit data, the study team also calculated the "metallicity" of HAT-P-26b's atmosphere — how much of it is made up of elements other than hydrogen and helium. (To an astronomer, anything heavier than helium is a metal.)
In Earth's solar system, metallicity goes down as a planet's mass goes up. For example, Neptune and Uranus both have metallicities about 100 times greater than that of the sun (which is almost entirely hydrogen and helium), whereas the much larger Saturn and Jupiter are just 10 and five times more metallic than the sun, respectively.
But HAT-P-26b does not fit that pattern. Though the exoplanet is about as massive as Neptune, its metallicity is more in line with that of Jupiter, the researchers in the new study found.
This surprising bit of information holds clues about HAT-P-26b's formation and evolution, Wakeford said.
"It suggests that this smaller planet actually formed closer to its star, more like where Jupiter formed," she said. "And we didn't know before that you could form [such] planets in that region. We expected the smaller worlds to be formed further out, where they would accumulate clumps of icy debris and richer heavy elements during the formation in the [protoplanetary] disk." (In these scenarios, planets such as HAT-P-26b migrate inward, toward their stars, after they form.)
Over the last decade or so, NASA's Kepler space telescope and other planet-hunting instruments have revealed a staggering array of alien worlds and solar system architectures. The new study, and others like it, should help researchers better understand the reasons for this variety, Wakeford said.
"This is the first step toward looking at the diversity in the formation process as well," she said.
As fascinated as we are with the possibility of alien life, humanity does not have a plan for how to respond to aliens if they contact us. But however we respond, first contact is sure to change our world forever.
A CELESTIAL SEARCH
From the pointy ears of Vulcans to the sharp fangs of the Xenomorph, humans have long envisioned what alien species must be like. Will they be humanoid, or completely unfamiliar? Friendly, or violent?
We have no evidence of what extraterrestrials are like — or if they exist to begin with — but that hasn’t stopped us from looking for them. For years, organizations like SETI and NASA have been scouring the galaxy and our solar system for signs of alien life — and have actually found a few. Some scientists say fast radio bursts could be explained by otherworldly intelligence, and NASA just announced that they have detected molecules that could suggest life on one of Saturn’s moons.
Despite our many creative tests, we have yet to discover conclusive proof of life originating from another world. And perhaps this is for the best, as, for the moment, Earth has not come to a consensus on how to react to alien lifeforms — or if we should even interact with them at all.
While humanity has not developed a protocol for alien encounters, we do have a a scale, called the “Rio Scale,” for determining how important your evidence of aliens is. It was developed by researchers at SETI and evaluates your discovery based on four criteria. It calculates your score (available here for the next time you spot a UFO), which can range from zero (you think you see stars forming your initials in a NASA picture of a distant galaxy, but no one else gets how important that is) to 10 (you have an alien in the trunk of your car, and are now Googling labs to take it to).
But the question remains, what do we do when we finally reach that 10 — or even a 5? Do we send flowers? Try to initiate trade? Put on a tough front and warn off the potentially dangerous aliens?
The Green Bank Telescope is the world’s largest, fully-steerable telescope. The GBT’s dish is 100-meters by 110-meters in size, covering 2.3 acres of space. The telescope is currently being used in a new SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) attempt to look for possible alien radio signals from Tabby’s Star.

FIRST CONTACT
While we haven’t officially arrived at an answer to these questions, enthusiasts haven’t let that stop them. Several groups have already sent messages to the stars, hoping to get an extraterrestrial response. NASA included a map to Earth in the Pioneer spacecraft. Carl Sagan helped broadcast a message in “alienese” from the Arecibo Observatory. We have also sent mathematical principles to potentially-habitable star systems so aliens will know that we’re smart.
But many experts think that these attempts, and others like them, have more potential to harm the human race than to help it. Stephen Hawking voiced his concerns about responding to potential alien signals in the video “Stephen Hawking’s Favorite Places.” He pointed out that other civilizations could be “vastly more powerful and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria.” After all, he argues, being friendly did not protect the Native Americans from European settlers.
Other experts, like Douglas Vakoch, argue that any alien advanced enough to be a threat to our world would have surely picked up on all the signals we’ve already vented into the universe. We haven’t been at all concerned about hiding our tracks to this point, so what good would ghosting extraterrestrials do us now?
How or whether we respond to alien life when we find it, one thing is certain — it will change our world forever. Sagan believed that the discovery could lead to a more humble and unified humanity. He reflected in Pale Blue Dot, “To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

HUMAN beings don’t really have to travel to outer space to encounter a hostile, deadly and alien environment. We already have Somalia.
Seriously, human beings devote an inappropriate amount of time towards wondering if there is intelligent life out there. Actually, there used to be but one Al Einstein was only visiting.
Look at all the stuff out there on UFO’s, extra-terrestrial life, aliens and so forth. There are science fiction classics, movies and endless conspiracy theories. In all this, man puts himself in the centre of things; as if we had pride of place in the universe.
It may not be true. What if Jay Leno was right when he famously quipped: “How would we feel if we learned that the only reason aliens stopped by Earth was to allow the kids to take a leak?”
But I have good news for you, dear reader. It turns out that scientists have demolished many myths that Hollywood holds dear.
Movies like Critters have argued that aliens have a propensity to eat humans which gives a whole new meaning to the concept of going out for steak and fries.
Perish the thought. The science of nutrition disputes it. Astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell says that to get nourishment from eating us, alien bodies would have to be capable of processing our molecules (like amino acids) which, apparently, is wholly unlikely.
Aliens, you’d be glad to know, also cannot reproduce with us. Alas, poor Spock.
The reason: we can’t even reproduce with our nearest evolutionary relative, the chimpanzee. Indeed, it’s “overwhelmingly improbable” we could do so with aliens, according to Dartnell, who seems to know something we don’t.
They are unlikely to look like us as well which is a relief to know: one Donald Trump may be all we can take.
Human evolution depended on so many unique and unpredictable factors, it’s near impossible that an extraterrestrial species would have human-like features, like the aliens in Star Trek.
It’s far likelier, writes neuroscientist Anil Seth, that they’d be as different as the octopus, “our very own terrestrial alien,” which has a high level of intelligence, a decentralised nervous system and an alternative style of consciousness. You’d be an “alternative” too if you squirted ink every time you got angry. Or afraid.
Would they contact us? Should aliens contact us, cosmologist Martin Rees believes we will hear not from fellow organic creatures, but from the robots they produced, who can, in theory, live forever.
Remember Independence Day, a movie that famously featured aliens arriving to strip Earth of its resources.
But again, that logic doesn’t add up, writes Dartnell.
Most of our metal is in the Earth’s core, not its crust; asteroids would be far better targets for mining. And icy moons, like Jupiter’s Europa, would be easier places to stock up on water.
They’re uninhabited, and they don’t have Earth’s strong gravitational pull.
So if aliens aren’t interested in harvesting our lands or our bodies, why would they make contact? Dartnell suspects a purer motive: curiosity. Which, frankly speaking, is unpleasant enough.
“If aliens did come to Earth,” he writes, it would probably be “as researchers: biologists, anthropologists, linguists, keen to understand the peculiar workings of life on Earth, to meet humanity and learn of our art, music, culture, languages, philosophies and religions.”
So it turns out that even Spielberg got it wrong. ET could never have gone home because it never came here in the first place. So at best, we’ll just have to stick to alien jokes.
Which reminds me: have you heard the one about the alien who landed and ordered the first gardener it met: “Take me to your weeder.”
The eagle-eyed viewers saw the bizarre disc-like “craft” zooming off into space from the ISS.
Video apparently shows the craft get close to the station, which is constantly manned by astronauts from NASA, Roscosmos and the ESA.
Alien enthusiasts online have claimed it is further proof there is a large population of ETs in space.

SPOTTED: Alien enthusiasts claim they spotted a UFO at the ISS
UFO blogger Scott Waring hailed it as an excellent example of an alien spaceship.
He wrote: “It is seen on the other side of the solar panels in the far distance.
“It looks like it is the size of a city bus and is disc-shaped.”
He also claimed that if you regularly watch the live feed of the space station you are guaranteed to see a UFO.
It’s just the latest “alien” sighting at the ISS.
Last month, outlandish claims emerged of a NASA alien cover up over accusations the US space agency cuts the feed to the station when a UFO approaches.

The Kennedy Space Center reveals new Mars buggy on social media.
The latest project of NASA’s privately owned Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex has taken even the most ardent space buff completely by surprise. It has transpired that since last year, the company has been involved with the creation of a high-tech concept vehicle which is capable of acting an exploration rover on Mars.
The space center trailed images of videos of the space buggy on social media before releasing the news to the mainstream media. A video was shared to Instagram showing the rover in action, slowly moving across the road in front of the Kennedy Space Center. This video particularly caught the attention of the general public who noted that the buggy bears more than a passing resemblance to the Batmobile in ‘Batman Begins.'
The cinematic reference would most certainly not be lost on the buggy’s creators, Marc Parker and his brother Shanon Parker. Over the years, the brothers have made their names designed audacious and high-spec vehicles for the use in television programs and action movies. Speaking to the press, Marc Parker explained that the buggy had been specifically designed to withstand the obstacles that a voyage to Mars will present. He described the buggy as a ‘dual-purpose vehicle’ that separates into two pieces. The rear section in a full lab and the front section is a cockpit which can be used for scouting. The two pieces of the buggy can act independently of one another and perform their research tasks separately.
However, the buggy will not be used for a visit to Mars. Instead, the buggy is going to be the centerpiece of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex’s ‘Summer of Mars.' This is a planned educational event that will be conducted in conjunction with NASA to teach the public, especially children, about the mysteries of the Red Planet and the exploration of outer space.
Marc Parker explained that he was incredibly enthusiastic about this project. "Movies are cool, TV is cool, but it's something else to be part of a thing that could inspire kids to go Mars and live in outer space, "he said to reporters. He also revealed that the making of the Batmobile-rescue Mars buggy had been captured in full by a television documentary crew and the whole story should be hitting screens at some point this year.
NASA UNVEILS BATMOBILE MARS ROVER
NASA in conjunction with the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, have unveiled their new concept Mars rover, a six-wheeled vehicle oddly resembling the Batmobile.
NASA plan to begin manned missions to Mars by 2033 and the rover is part of a larger event entitled 'Summer of Mars' held at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, which is owned by NASA but run by a third party.
Being a conceptual design, it isn't clear how close the vehicle is to anything that will one day be exploring the surface of the red planet. What the rover will do however is raise interest in the idea of exploring Mars at a time when interest among the general public is fairly low.
The space agency tends to receive a higher or lower budget depending on several factors. Most influential are the economic and political conditions at the time the budget is drawn up. Public opinion of space exploration and the work that NASA is doing, however, go a long way towards influencing their budget as well. The more popular NASA is, the better funded it becomes and the more projects it can pursue.
The lofty goal of reaching Mars in a relatively short time is due in part to the new budget given to the space agency by the passing of a bill entitled the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2017. The bill provides NASA with a budget of $19.3 billion per year or 0.5% of the total budget and focuses on reaching Mars and the continued development of the space launch system.
The budget does however dramatically cut certain sections of NASA's operations, namely the Earth sciences. These sections of NASA deal primarily with ecological and environmental issues and don't tend to attract as much press as space exploration.
The designer of the vehicle, Marc Parker, said of his creation:
"What we came up with was a dual-purpose vehicle. It separates in the middle. The rear section is a full lab; the front area is a cockpit for going out and doing scouting, "
The vehicle is solar powered as most rover designs tend to be, and features specially designed tires that allow the fine dust of the Martian surface to pass through them.
Design and construction of the vehicle began in November 2016 and was completed earlier this month. The concept design, although not directly mandated by NASA itself does follow broad guidelines that the space agency put in place.

VIDEODe Franse astronaut Thomas Pesquet verblijft momenteel voor zes maanden in het ISS-ruimtestation in opdracht van het European Space Agency ESA. Op Twitter deelde hij vandaag een filmpje waarin het onweer te zien is dat Europa donderdag teisterde.
"Nachtvlucht over Europa met onweders in de verte. Merk op hoe de atmosfeer verandert van groen naar oranje," schreef Pesquet bij het filmpje, waarin te zien is hoe tientallen bliksemschichten de hemel oplichten.
Pesquet voert momenteel met enkele collega's wetenschappelijke experimenten uit in het ISS en houdt zich in zijn vrije tijd bezig met fotografie. Hij is een fervent twitteraar en houdt zijn volgers voortdurend op de hoogte van wat hij in het ruimtestation ziet en beleeft.
Het is niet de eerste keer dat Pesquet indrukwekkende beelden vanuit de ruimte deelt. Zo maakte hij eerder deze week nog een adembenemende foto van het poollicht en deelde hij onlangs ook een foto waarop te zien is dat België 's nachts meer verlicht wordt dan eender welk ander Europees land.
