Former NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao talks about life in space, aliens, and a new perspective

Former International Space Station commander and NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao visited Wollongong yesterday to share his experiences in zero gravity, discuss whether aliens exist, and show how the Illawarra is helping protect astronauts from radiation damage in space.

Dr Chiao is the kind of person you could spend an entire day talking to and still not have all your fascinating questions about space answered.

Thankfully, the American astronaut is happy to patiently and enthusiastically talk about life in orbit.

A day on the space station

As commander of the International Space Station (ISS), Dr Chiao orbited the Earth every 90 minutes while travelling more than 28,000 kilometres an hour.

That brings around a sunset or sunrise every 45 minutes.

"Your schedule is set for you down to the minute," he said.

"You check off what you accomplish each day and then you sleep and wake up and your schedule has been created for you — it's there on the computer, so you're kept busy.

"Even if you've got a great view of the Earth, you can feel a bit cooped up, and the ISS is big but it's not that big."

Dr Chiao said the launch into space took about nine minutes before you felt the weightlessness of zero gravity, and completing a spacewalk was a "fantastic feeling".

"You're very well trained for the spacewalk, so when you go outside it's not like the movies," he said.

"It's very physical. You're working against the pressures of the suit and you're aware of where you're putting your tethers.

"It's surreal and like a dream. You can't believe you're out there in a suit doing this kind of work.

"But at the same time you're well trained, but if you rest for a minute and look where you are, you think 'Is this real?'"

New perspective from space

The 'overview effect' is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts during space flight while viewing Earth.

It is a perspective you can see if you log on to the ISS's live stream, but very few people get to experience it in person.

"I don't think anyone flies into space without some form of fundamental introspection about what life is about," Dr Chiao said.

"For me, I was surprised how much more beautiful it is than what the pictures show.

"It looks very peaceful and nice, and intellectually I knew there was war, famine and conflict down there and that dichotomy was hard to reconcile.

"It makes you stop and think, and it gave me that perspective of what's important in life."

Is there other life out there?

Dr Chiao said recent discoveries of water on one of Saturn's moons, and amino acids on comets, left him in no doubt about extra-terrestrial life.

"To find this kind of evidence of life in our own backyard means to me the idea there's other life in the universe is pretty much a given," he said.

"I think there's all kinds of life out there, including intelligent life, but the reason we haven't found each other is because of vast distances."

Dr Chiao said given how big the universe was and how another planet could be millions of light years away, it was not a surprise we had not found extra-terrestrial life.

How Wollongong research benefits astronauts

Dr Chiao visited to speak at the University of Wollongong about his experiences in space, where NASA is headed, and how research at the university into radiation directly benefits astronauts.

"The biggest technical challenge in flying people longer and further from the Earth is biomedical," he said.

What is the Goldilocks Zone?

What is the habitable zone? Is it different for different stars? And why does it matter in the search for ET?

"A lot of things happen, including radiation, and when we venture beyond the Earth's magnetosphere, we're no longer protected from radiation from the sun.

"That's why the university's work here is so important — we need to understand the radiation environment and have effective detectors that can tell us what we're being exposed to and how to counteract what we're being exposed to."

The detectors used on board aircraft such as the ISS have a practical application in treating cancer patients.

"Space provides a unique kind of environment that's almost impossible to create on Earth," University of Wollongong researcher Stuart George said.

"The techniques we develop with these particle detectors are directly applicable to the measurements you'd do for ion therapy here on Earth.

"We've had these in a proton therapy centre and done measurements that are medically relevant.

"They will be used by treatment planners and physicists to better understand how to control their beams and control where they're putting their radiation inside people and their tumours."

This Ghostly Bubble Nebula Is the Product of a Truly Massive Star

There’s a spectacular bubble of gas forming around a massive star about 7,000 light-years from Earth.

Called the Bubble Nebula, the cosmic spectacle is powered by a star that’s 45 times more massive than our sun and thousands of times hotter. That heat pushes stellar winds of ionized gas outward, forming the bubble and the larger nest of clouds surrounding it.

Discovered in 1787, it can be seen like never before in this video based on composite imagery from the Hubble Telescope (with oxygen colored blue, hydrogen colored green, and nitrogen colored red).

Emission nebula like the Bubble, are often referred to as a “stellar nurseries” because the heat, ionized gas, and cosmic dust work together to form new stars in the region. This makes structures like the Bubble an important area of study for scientists, as learning how young stars form can help us understand how our sun formed and, ultimately, our entire solar system.

SpaceX Just Made History by Reusing a Dragon Capsule

SpaceX made history on Monday when it successfully reused a Dragon pressure vessel for the first time. Mission CRS-11, the second Dragon launch of the year, was captured by the International Space Station at 8.52 a.m. Central time, ahead of schedule. The success of the mission is a major step toward the company’s main goals of reducing flight costs and preparing for a manned mission to Mars.

“These people have supplied us with a vast amount of science and supplies, really fuel for the engine of innovation we get to call home, the International Space Station,” Jack Fisher, a NASA astronaut serving on Expedition 52, said during the live webcast.

The vessel successfully lifted off on a Falcon 9 rocket Saturday evening, taking off from launch complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, the 100th launch from the pad. The launch sent the vessel on a 41-hour voyage to the space station. Initially, the launch was scheduled to take place on Thursday, but unforeseen lightning meant the crew pulled the plug just 25 minutes before liftoff.

CRS-11, named because it’s the eleventh commercial resupply services mission, is an important milestone in the company’s history. Reusing a vessel is not as simple as strapping it back to a rocket and sending it up again: SpaceX has faced several hurdles on this journey, including working out how to stop salty seawater from ruining the capsule when it returns to Earth and lands in the ocean.

The mission’s success demonstrates SpaceX’s ability to reuse capsules, and bodes well for the ongoing development of the upcoming Dragon 2 craft. This future vessel will transport humans to and from the space station, and will represent the next step toward CEO Elon Musk’s ultimate goal of manned flights to Mars and the establishment of a human colony.

The capsule was first used on the CRS-4 mission back in September 2014. That mission brought the first 3D printer into space, and was just the fourth time SpaceX was contracted onto a resupply mission with NASA.

This time around, the Dragon is carrying nearly 6,000 pounds of scientific equipment, supplies and hardware. The equipment will be used by both Expedition 52 and 53 Among the cargo is NASA’s NICER, the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer. This is a finely-tuned spectrometer capable of reading both the thermal and non-thermal emissions sent out from neutron stars.

KELT-9b is tidally locked to its star, meaning that it only ever faces the star on one side, like how we only see one side of the moon from Earth. This makes for an uneven heat distribution: The orange dayside is so hot that the hydrogen and helium atoms can’t even bond together to form molecules, while the dark red nightside (which experiences constant darkness) may allow molecules to at least temporarily form. “The transition from the dayside to the nightside might be very interesting,” the study’s coauthor Scott Gaudi tells Inverse, “with molecules reforming as gas moves from the hotter dayside to the cooler nightside.”

The planet is way too hot to be habitable by humans, even if it weren’t doomed. Still, it’s an important discovery; Gaudi told CNN that a discussion about colonizing other planets “should take place in the context of understanding how planetary systems form,” and scientists don’t yet understand how this incredibly hot system was created.

KELT-9b “demonstrates that giant planets can indeed form around very massive stars, and that these planets can migrate to very close in orbits relatively early in the life of those stars,” Gaudi tells Inverse.

Hopefully they’ll soon gain more insight into KELT-9b’s quirks. Until then, this exoplanet weirdo will be whirling up there on the road less traveled by, like a darn individual.

There's a 5% Chance A.I. Leads to Extinction-Level Disaster

Time to start paying attention?

Experts are generally optimistic about the potential of A.I. but also aware of major risks, according to a big new survey.

Precisely 352 experts (who recently published at A.I. conferences) were asked to predict the future, in a paper from researchers at Yale, Oxford, and the Future of Life Institute. While estimates varied greatly, the median result points to a 50 percent likelihood of “high-level machine intelligence,” where unaided machines will accomplish every task better and more cheaply than human workers, by 2061.

As for what effect HLMI will have on humanity, researchers said on average there was a 20 percent chance it could be extremely good; 25 percent it would be on-balance good; 20 percent it would be neutral; 10 percent it would be bad; and — here’s the scary part — 5 percent it would be extremely bad (e.g., human extinction).

Facing this risk, 48 percent of respondents said society should devote more resources to research on minimizing the risks of A.I. (only 12 percent said we should deprioritize this research).

Whatever happens, it will likely happen fast: 65 percent of respondents said progress was happening faster in the second half of their careers than the first.

While the respondents didn’t explain how A.I. could go horribly wrong, we can look to warnings from the likes of Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. One worry those two cited was an arms race in autonomous weapons, which “require no costly or hard-to-obtain raw materials [and so would] become ubiquitous and cheap for all significant military powers to produce … [and would inevitably] appear on the black market and in the hands of terrorists, dictators looking to better control their populace, warlords wishing to perpetrate ethnic cleansing, etc.”

Musk offered A.I. risk as a major reason to boost human intelligence through neural links: “A.I. that is much smarter than the smartest human on Earth — I think that is a dangerous situation.”

But, hey, don’t forget about all the cool things A.I. will do in the coming years. And remember, there’s a 20% chance this will all turn out extremely well.

Reptilian Aliens Helped Nazi Germany Build Secret Space Program in Antarctica

In the run up to World War II, German secret societies and the Nazi SS were guided to three large caverns in Antarctica by Reptilian extraterrestrials, according to former U.S. Navy intelligence operative William Tompkins. In his latest ExoNews TV interview, released today, Tompkins describes how the Reptilians helped the Germans/Nazis build underground bases in remote Antarctic caverns, which were located next to even larger caverns controlled by the Reptilians.

According to Tompkins, the U.S. Navy learned of the existence of these secret Antarctic bases from their spies embedded in Nazi Germany, who found that the Nazis/Germans used these remote bases to launch space missions to the Moon, other planets in our solar system, and, most remarkably, to distant interstellar locations.

Tompkins says that the Germans began moving equipment and supplies to Antarctica as early as 1913, which coincides historically with the Second German Antarctic Expedition from 1911-1913. This period also coincides with the increasing role of German secret societies in exploring remote global locations for occult knowledge.

The movement of equipment accelerated in the lead up to World War II. In his interview, Tompkins cites 1934 as the beginning of this acceleration, even though historical records point to 1938 as the launch of the Third German Antarctic Expedition:

The move from Germany to Antarctica was in operation from 1934 way before the war started. In fact some of the stuff went down in 1913.

In last week’s ExoNews TV episode, Tompkins revealed that secret agreements had been reached between Hitler’s regime and Draconian Reptilians. In this week’s episode he discussed one of the major elements of this agreement:

Large portions of equipment were sent down there. But right next to them were three tremendous size caverns which the Reptilians had. Not Grays, but Reptilians. Germany got two more, about a tenth the size of the big Reptilians [cavern]. They were able to … [go] down, usually by submarine. They built these flat submarines, these regular class, so they could ship all this stuff down.

Tompkins remarkable information is consistent with Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz who referred on three occasions to an impregnable fortress being built for Hitler in a remote location using Germany’s advanced submarine fleet. In 1943, Donitz is reported to have stated: 

… the German submarine fleet is proud of having built for the Führer, in another part of the world, a Shangri-La on land, an impregnable fortress.

The second occasion was in 1944, when he revealed how plans were in place to relocate Hitler so he could launch a new effort for his thousand-year Reich:

The German Navy will have to accomplish a great task in the future. The German Navy knows all hiding places in the oceans and therefore it will be very easy to bring the Führer to a safe place should the necessity arise and in which he will have the opportunity to work out his final plans.

Finally, Dönitz’s remarks at his Nuremberg war crime trial clearly suggest that it was Antarctica where Germany’s most advanced technologies had been secretly relocated by his submarine fleet. At the trial he boasted of “an invulnerable fortress, a paradise-like oasis in the middle of eternal ice.”

Donitz’s remarks were made plausible in 1966 by cartographer and artist Heinrich C. Berann for the National Geographic Society. In Berann’s depiction of an ice-free Antarctica, he shows underwater passageways that run throughout the Antarctic continent. This provided a plausible way in which submarines could travel under the ice for considerable distances to Nazi Germany’s “invulnerable fortress”.

Donitz’s claims are further supported by documents provided by an alleged German submarine crewman after the war, which described the instructions for U-Boat Captains to reach the Antarctica bases through the hidden passage ways. Below is an image of the document with the translated instructions.

In today’s interview, Tompkins describes simultaneous flying saucer programs that had been developed by the Nazis. One was in Germany, while the second was in Antarctica. In his response to a question about where Germany’s antigravity craft were being built, he said:

They built the prototypes in Germany. They built pre-protype, something which is ready for production, in Antarctica. They put this stuff in production in the countries all over Germany [Occupied Europe], and they continued to build similar vehicles in Antarctica.

Tompkins then shares one of the most astonishing secrets gained by the Navy spies embedded in Germany. With the help of the Reptilians, the Nazi’s Antarctica program had successfully launched manned missions to the Moon, planets, and even other star systems.

Now the question was asked whether did we ever get to the Moon? You see it was in some way, it was well known that the Germans had a number of vehicles that flew out and came back. One of the first ones, they got into trouble, they crashed and the whole group died. But that was almost all coming from Antarctica. Way before, four years before, the war ended, they were always moving all of this stuff out. And so the flights, almost everything came from Antarctica with the same people. … I don’t know if it was true or not, but it was stated by some of those fellows [Navy spies] that they had gone to other stars and come back.

Tompkins remarkable claims corroborate the testimony of secret space program whistleblower, Corey Goode, who claims that from 1987 to 2007, he had access to smart glass pads, which described the successful Nazi space program that operated out of Antarctica.

Goode said the Antarctica program was controlled by German secret societies rather than the Nazi SS:

As explained, the Nazi remnants that were made up mostly of Secret Societies that created a “Break Away Civilization,” kept the most advanced technology secret from even their highest Military and Political leaders, setup enclaves in South America and Antarctica. The locations in Antarctica were some ancient civilization ruins that had remained occupied by certain groups in thermal area’s that cause area’s similar to lava tubes and domes under the glaciers.

Goode goes on to corroborate Tompkins claim that the Nazi bases were built adjacent to caverns controlled by another advanced civilization, the Reptilians:

There was an underground and under glacier city complex that was already occupied and setup in a couple of locations and the NAZI’s renovated an area that was mostly crushed above the surface but had plenty of room under the domed ice, thermal underground energy and caverns (accessible via U-boat under the ice flows and openings that made it ideal for a hidden multipurpose base) that were perfect for them to secretly build out during the entire Second World War

What makes Tompkins claims difficult to dismiss are documents he has published in his book,Selected by Extraterrestrials, supporting his main claim that he participated in a covert Navy Intelligence program that disseminated Germany’s advanced aerospace secrets to selected U.S. aerospace companies, think tanks and universities.

Furthermore, documents, and statements by Admiral Donitz, support Tompkins claims that Nazi Germany had succeeded in locating and building underground facilities under the Antarctic continent. The long route under the Antarctic ice sheets, which the German submarine fleet allegedly took to reach these hidden caverns, gives credence to Tompkins claims that Reptilian extraterrestrials had provided the Nazis with the information necessary to locate the hidden Antarctic caverns, and the under-ice passage ways to reach them.

In the next episode of ExoNews TV, we will hear from William Tompkins how the Nazis used slave labor in their hidden Antarctic bases, and that the Italian government had also developed a flying saucer program headed by the famous inventor, Gugliemo Marconi that was secretly operating out of hidden South American locations.

AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS JUST FOUND OBJECTS IN SPACE THAT COULD LEAD TO THE BIGGEST DISCOVERY OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM IN OVER 150 YEARS

60,000 people recently got together to make history. Their goal? Observe planet nine for the first time. Planet Nine is a theoretical planet that is thought to exist beyond Pluto, but no one has seen it yet. Participants worked using data from Siding Spring’s SkyMapper telescope. Brad Tucker had has the leading role, by ANU Researcher, and team agreed with one of the four possibilities regardless of whether. The scientific value of the project was certainly verified.

Other researchers agree with the ANU team’s sentiment: astronomer Mike Brown of Caltech tweeted his support for the project.For one, it is probably 1,000 times fainter than Pluto. The task for researchers, then, is to sift through old data and make new observations. Learn more in the video below:

Icy Mystery Meteor Falls from Cloudless Sky in Florida

It’s always Florida, isn’t it? Over the weekend, a mysterious ball of ice reportedly fell from a completely clear sky in Cape Coral, Florida, landing in a field in a suburban neighborhood. While that in itself isn’t particularly surprising in the age of ubiquitous air travel, the ice does not appear to have fallen from any aircraft and instead is speculated to be a case of a rare and mysterious weather phenomenon.

The ice conveniently fell in a field as opposed to through someone’s windshield.

According to local news affiliate NBC 2, a Florida man heard the meteorite before seeing it. In a video aired by NBC 2, the man can be heard saying the object buzzing like a drone as it passed overhead. Looking up, he then saw the icy projectile crash to Earth somewhere in his neighborhood. He grabbed his wife, identified as Tiffany Laymance and ran to find the fallen ice lying in a small crater. Laymance, who discovered the icy meteorite, says the ice appeared to be clear, ruling out frozen airplane sewage:

We smelled it. And there was no smell whatsoever to it so we’re like okay, so we started Googling about it to try and figure out what it could be. I don’t do the aliens or anything like that so… just crazy ice.

It just so turns out that this particular kind of “crazy ice” likely has a bizarre meteorological explanation, and it doesn’t involve ‘the aliens’ for once.

Lets get one thing clear: Tiffany Laymance doesn’t “do the aliens or anything like that.”

Under certain atmospheric conditions, large clusters of ice similar to hailstones can form at high altitudes. When they fall to Earth, they are known as megacryometeors or atmospheric ice conglomerations. It is still not well known what causes them to form, and they often fall from cloudless skies.

Of course, the ice could have also condensed on the side of an aircraft passing overhead, but megacryometeor sounds a lot cooler. Also, while airplane waste is often cited as a theory, these mysterious chunks of ice have been reported since before the dawn of aviation and do not have the tell-tale blue color which disinfectant creates in airplane waste. Thus, these icy mystery meteorites can join the ranks of animal rains and the star jelly, another unexplained seemingly natural substance which appears to fall spontaneously from the skies.

What Scientists Just Found Deep In The Ocean Is Seriously Unbelievable. I’m Still In Shock!

Off the coast of Egypt divers have discovered something that was thought to be lost a long time ago.

It was said that the ancient city of Heracleion was lost under the sea for good.

Well 1200 years later, off the bay of Aboukir, this ancient city has finally been discovered.

The city dates back to the 6th century B.C. and holds some of the most beautiful artifacts you could imagine.

Things like grand statues of gods and goddesses standing well over 15 feet tall and carved out of red granite, treasures of gold and rare stones, elaborate temples and enormous tablets.

This find is enormous in the historical preservation community and has been commissioned by museums around the world.

Take a look at this incredible city found underwater.

This is diver Franck Goddio examining the enormous hand carved statue of a pharaoh. This statue stands roughly 16 feet tall and was found near a large temple under the sea.

Here is the head of a statue carved out of red granite depicting the god Hapi. Hapi is known as the god of the flooding of the Nile. Hapi is a symbol of abundance and fertility and has never been discovered at such a large scale before.

The divers and their team of researchers carefully lift the statue to the surface in order to preserve and protect this piece of history. It will reside safely in a museum. 

Here the pharaoh, the queen and the god Hapi are laid on the barge next to a temple stele. The stele dates back to the 2nd century B.C.. It was found broken into 17 pieces however all were found and placed back together.

This gold plaque was found in the southern sector of the city. The text is written in Greek and acts as a signature for foundation deposits in the name of the king responsible for building this area. King Ptolemy III (246-222 B.C.)

In the reflection of this divers mask we see a bronze statue of the god Osiris. The crown is the typical insignia of power and this statue has eyes adorned with gold sheets.

Every single detail of this site in Aboukir Bay has been meticulously documented. Here a diver measures a red granite statues feet below the surface of the ocean.

A bronze oil lamp in excellent condition. This dates back to the 2nd century B.C.

Diver Franck Goddio showing off the size of this inscribed stele. This was ordered to be built by Nectanebo I sometime between 378 and 362 B.C. 

The divers carefully lift the enormous stele out of the water where it has been for well over 1200 years. 

Here the divers carefully inspect a stone full of gold fragments that date back to the 6th century B.C. I’m amazed that these are still in tact.

This is a shallow gold saucer that was used for drinking and serving.

This is an absolutely stunning statue found under the bay of a Ptolemiac queen. Most likely Cleopatra II or Cleopatra III dressed as the goddess Isis.

This red granite statue was also found near the big temple of Heracleion and weighs a massive 4 tons.

Here is a beautiful artifact, a Graeco-Egyptian statue of a queen carved out of dark stone.

This is the head of a pharaoh statue being raised to the surface. The statue measures over 5 meters and was carved out of red granite.

A bronze small figure of the pharaoh of the 26th dynasty found at a smaller temple in the underwater city of Heracleion. 

This is an absolutely epic underwater find that has researchers scrambling to this part of the globe to learn about this incredibly beautiful Egyptian city.

The fact that this city found underwater has been left untouched underwater for so many years is an amazing factor on its own let alone being a find as big as it truly is. These statues and artifacts are massive and nearly perfectly preserved.

The attention to detail in these pieces is truly beautiful and I’m happy to see it being preserved with great care.

INDIA will be the first country to explain to the world about ALIENS CONTACTS?

New Delhi is in the middle of a big secret internal debate. On one side the largest democracy of the world is eager to explain to its citizens and to the world about the ongoing contacts with the UFOs and extraterrestrials. On the other hand there are invisible untold international protocols that prohibit doing anything that may cause worldwide fear and panic.

It is well accepted between the UFO and extra-terrestrial experts that all the five nuclear powers are in contact with the beings from other stars for quite some time. Recently India has seen enormous news on UFO contacts and secret UFO bases in Himalayas near the Chinese bases. In Ladak, for example the locals clearly point out the everyday phenomenon of large triangular spacecrafts coming out below the ground and Indian security forces protecting them.

Military officials and politicians have confessed the fact that India has been contacted. India has been told the rules of the Universe.

The current debate is on whether to keep it secret like other countries are doing or in tradition of a total transparent society come out and tell the truth. India is so open and democratic; it is very difficult to keep a secret for long. The biggest concern of the Government today is that unlike in other countries, it will be very difficult to keep it secret for long. If the information comes out through unofficial channels first and then the authorities are pressed against the wall to confess, two bad things can happen. First, it can really cause a panic in the country as well as the world. Second, the way the Indian politics is run, the ruling party will be thrown out of power in no time i it is ever found that the Government withheld such information from the public.

The recent rush of world leaders to India is remarkable. Starting from Russian President Putin to major Senators from America have visited or are planning to visit India. European Union is in deep discussion with India on cooperation. All sanctions against India’s nuclear programs and Indian Space Research Organization are in the process of being lifted. India is cooperating with Europeans and the Americans in space explorations and technology research program. India is also part of World Trade Organization. India is receiving major outsourcing contracts in IT and call-center service work from America and Europe. India’s Forex reserve is at a level never imagined before because of international direct investments from Western nations, Japan, Korea and others. Interestingly, China the arc rival of India changed its posture in the last few years to make India’s friendship and trade a priority. India is slowly getting to the point when it is accepted as a permanent member of the Security Council. All the five Security Council members China, America, Russia, France and UK support India’s inclusion.

When all these factors are added together and analyzed, it seems like India is being told by the world to abide by the hidden protocols and in exchange be recognized as a major emerging superpower.

The debate the country is facing internally is whether to abide by the laws of the world and the Universe to be recognized as a superpower or be truthful to its citizens and the world.

According to sources close to the Government, the UFO contacts is known by quite a few politicians in the opposition and of course by those who are in power.

The military has legitimate concern of not letting the secrets out either.

Mars was probably habitable for longer than we thought

In ancient times, Gale Crater rippled with the fresh, blue water of a large lake. Now it’s a 90-mile-wide hole in the red Martian surface. Its water is gone, but the sediments it left behind contain clues about when and where the planet might once have been hospitable to life.

The Curiosity rover has been searching for those clues since 2012. Rambling around Gale Crater and inching up the 3-mile-high Mount Sharp at its center, Curiosity is studying the layers of rock that the lake laid down over time.

Today, a new analysis of the rover’s findings reveals the red planet had the physical, chemical, and energetic ingredients to support life between 3.8 and 3.1 billion years ago. That’s right around the time that life got started on Earth, and it’s a larger window than scientists previously assumed.

A window into the past

Geochemist Joel Hurowitz from Stony Brook University led a large team that scrutinized the chemical contents in 100 meters of rock layers in Gale Crater. The chemicals within the rocks indicate what sorts of conditions they formed under.

To reconstruct the red planet’s past climate, Hurowitz and his team measured how much aluminum each layer contained, versus minerals like sodium and calcium which easily leach out of the rock.

During warm conditions, water is better at dissolving and chemically modifying rocks. So if a rock layer has a lot of aluminum but not much sodium or calcium, that indicates it formed under warm conditions. Cold water isn’t as chemically active, so a rock layer with a higher abundance of sodium and calcium suggests the layer formed under warm conditions.

The rocks suggest that Mars was initially cool, and then became warm and wet. Eventually it dried out due to a cataclysmic loss of its atmosphere, but the new results indicate that Mars’ mild climate was longer-lived than scientists expected.

The Sumerian Anunnaki and the Origin of Mankind

One of the most interesting theories regarding the origin of mankind was proposed by paranormal author Zecharia Sitchin and revolves around the Anunnaki (Sumerian: “those who came down from the heavens”). The Anunnaki correspond to the old Hebrew Anakeim and Elohim and the Egyptian Neter.

According to Sitchin, the Anunnaki came from Nibiru, the mysterious yet unconfirmed tenth planet in our solar system. They landed in the Persian Gulf area some 430,000 years ago and colonized our planet with the intention of mining monoatomic gold, which was scarce on Nibiru yet abundant on Earth.

Their mining operations went without a hitch for 200,000 years until their miners rebelled and the Anunnaki were left without their working force. Documents Sitchin claims to have translated tell of the efforts the Anunnaki undertook in search for new miners, efforts which ultimately led to the rise of Homo sapiens.

After unsuccessful attempts to splice animal and Homo erectus DNA, the Anunnaki chief scientists Enkiand Ninhursag incorporated their own genetic material into H. erectus, fathering modern humans. Their success was shadowed by the fact that their new human slaves were sterile clones and as the demand for workforce increased, they genetically engineered mankind in order to be able to reproduce.

This ability led to overpopulation and many humans were banished from the safety of their cities, giving rise to the expulsion from paradise myth that so many cultures still recall.

Thousands of centuries later, the human species had evolved into stability and again caught the attention of the Anunnaki. They wanted to take advantage of the new genetic stock and some of them were chosen as sexual partners. The children resulted from these forbidden unions were called the Nephilim, “the giants of old”. This protocol breach also resulted in wiping out the resulting populace, save for a few chosen individuals who were protected by Enki, who still harbored sympathy for his creation. These events are present as the cultural heritage of many civilizations.

After hundreds of thousands of years of enslaving their creation to serve their obscure interests, the Anunnaki decided to leave Earth. Their influence reached every corner of the world, from Mesopotamia to India to South America.

According to Sitchin, the Anunnaki exodus happened around 6,000 years ago. Before they left, they decided to give humanity one more boost, which can be summed up as the Sumerian civilization, which was inexplicably advanced for its time. Indeed, they made a ‘sudden’ appearance as a mature and highly organized culture. The Anunnaki taught the Sumerians their way of life and established kingship. The king would act as their emissary on Earth and rule the people under their guidance. Their select bloodline was genetically enhanced with Anunnaki genes and they were taught astronomy, mathematics, technology and medicine.

Despite the skepticism with which this theory has been met, Sitchin cites several documents and discoveries in support of his claim.

The Babylonian epic of creation called Enuma Elish represents a history of the forming of our solar system. According to it, the Earth had not yet formed when a wandering planet called Nibiru was caught by our sun’s gravitational pull. It disturbed many of the planets’ moons and tilted Uranus’ orbit. It then collided with Tiamat, a planet that once orbited between Mars and Jupiter.

Earth was born out of this collision and Tiamat’s moon became our own. What was left of Nibiru settled into a 3,600 year elliptical retrograde (it spins opposite to all the other planets) orbit around the sun. Interestingly enough, computer simulations indicate such an event as the origin of our planet. It would certainly explain a lot of inconsistencies in our current theory about the Moon, which seems older than Earth itself.

Sitchin also believes that the existence of out of place artifacts such as the Baghdad Batteries or the Saqqara Bird can be attributed to an ancient yet highly advanced civilization. He also mentions the suppressed discovery of an Anunnaki gold processing plant on Mount Horeb by Sir Flinders Petrie in 1889.

Archaeological digs at the ancient Mesopotamian city of Niniveh uncovered 400 intact clay tablets in the library of Assurbanipal. These tablets contain continuous historical records fully encompassing the activities of the Anunnaki. The records place the location of the Anunnaki genetic laboratories in East Central Africa, which, interestingly enough is in the exact same area as our modern searches have placed ‘mitochondrial Eve’ and in the same time period. Even more interesting is that 100,000 year-old gold mines have been found in the area.

Sitchin believes that our evolution has been sped up beyond a doubt. He and others claim that our radical and anomalous differences should be evidence enough for this theory.

They also say the Anunnaki are not done ruling Earth.

NASA Hunting Asteroid Worth Quadrillions of Dollars

The massive 16 Psyche asteroid is not only an interesting piece of rock, but the minerals she’s made up of are literally worth quadrillions of dollars. Being wildly fascinating and extremely rich does have its perks, and NASA is definitely courting her.

Earlier this year, NASA confirmed a mission to 16 Psyche. About a month ago, they bumped up their timeline, and now the mission seems to be ahead of schedule. The launch of  the Psyche robotic spacecraft will occur in 2022. Employing a fancy sling shot maneuver using the gravity of Earth and Mars, the spacecraft will reach the asteroid by 2026.

The reason for NASA’s interest in this asteroid is that it is comprised totally of nickel and iron, the same metals which make up the Earth’s core. The working theory is that 16 Psyche is actually the core of a long dead planet, which was roughly the same size as Mars, but was ripped apart due to massive collisions billions of years ago. While NASA views this as an opportunity to view a planetary core, similar to that of our own ‘terra firma‘, the niggling reality of a corpse planet serves as a cold reminder to an unfriendly cosmos.

Only slightly less interesting is that the asteroid has an estimated value of $10,000 quadrillion American dollars. The nickel and iron content of 16 Pysche is enough to crash the Earth’s entire economic system. The current gross world product (GWP) is only about $74 trillion, so humanity can only hope 16 Psyche gives change.

Lindy Elkins-Tanton, the lead scientist on the NASA mission and the director of Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration, stated in an interview that,

Even if we could grab a big metal piece and drag it back here … what would you do? Could you kind of sit on it and hide it and control the global resource — kind of like diamonds are controlled corporately — and protect your market? What if you decided you were going to bring it back and you were just going to solve the metal resource problems of humankind for all time? This is wild speculation obviously.

The technology required to drag a 200 kilometre wide metal asteroid from its current orbit, and bring it back to Earth, is still quite a ways away.  The Psyche mission is purely to observe the asteroid, and not to begin mining operations. The spacecraft will send data back to Earth which should help scientists here better understand how planets form, as well as how and why planets, such as Earth, separate into layers that make up the core, mantle and crust.

In addition to learning more about Earth, the NASA team also believes that asteroids such as 16 Psyche could provide possible life lines in space. New research suggests that this asteroid could be full of water. As humans endeavour deeper into space, similar asteroids could be used as sources of water. Elkins-Tanton notes,

That water can be used to make rocket fuel or be drunk by people, so then we’d have a resource stop that has metal and water.

While this is all still speculative, by 2026, NASA will get a close up view of 16 Psyche. Perhaps the intimate knowledge of a dead planet will remind humanity that its current squabbling over politics, religions, and resources are meaningless to the cosmos.

Exoplanet HD 131399 Ab turns out to be a background star, new study finds

(Phys.org)—A new study conducted by an international team of astronomers suggests that a recently discovered alien world, designated HD 131399 Ab, may not be a planet at all, but rather a background star. The researchers presented evidence supporting their hypothesis in a paper published online May 19 on the arXiv pre-print repository.

HD 131399 Ab was discovered in July 2016 using the SPHERE imager of the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile. Located some 316 light years away from the Earth, the object was initially classified as an exoplanet orbiting its parent star HD 131399 A every 550 years at a distance of about 80 AU from the host. The star is part of the triple system HD 131399 in the constellation Centaurus.

A reanalysis of the available data from SPHERE, as well as new photometric and spectroscopic observations carried out with the use of two other instruments, has led the researchers to call into question our current knowledge about HD 131399 Ab. The team led by Eric Nielsen of the SETI Institute, reinvestigated this object using the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) installed on the Gemini South Telescope in Chile, the NIRC2 near-infrared imager mounted on the Keck II telescope in Hawaii and also the SPHERE instrument to derive colors, spectra, and astrometry for HD 131399 Ab.

"The analysis of the data reveals unexpected spectroscopic and astrometric results that motivated the reanalysis of some of the already published data obtained with VLT/SPHERE," the astronomers wrote in the paper.

After its detection, HD 131399 Ab was classified as a young and massive planet. The astronomers discovered that HD 131399 Ab is about 16 million years old and has the mass of approximately four Jupiter masses. The new study, based on the data collected in 2017, presents the hypothesis that the object is a K or M dwarf star.

By analyzing the escape velocity of HD 131399 Ab, the researchers ruled out the possibility that the object is a bound planet. According to the authors of the paper, the probability that HD 131399 Ab is a background object is about 43,000 times greater than the probability that it is a bound planet.

The team also excluded other hypotheses such as the possibility that HD 131399 Ab is a planet or a planetary-mass object in the process of ejection from the system.

"We note this is very unlikely a priori, since the chance of observing a 16 Myr star just as it is ejecting its planet is very low," the researchers wrote.

According to the team, the most plausible hypothesis is that HD 131399 Ab is a background star. They found that spectra and magnitudes of the object obtained by GPI and the revised data from SPHERE are mostly consistent with a K or a M dwarf, the most probable candidates for a background object.

"When compared to predicted background objects drawn from a galactic model, we find this proper motion to be high, but consistent with the top 4 percent fastest-moving background stars. From our analysis, we conclude that HD 131399 Ab is a background K or M dwarf," the authors concluded.

From new JHK1L' photometry and spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini Planet Imager, VLT/SPHERE, and Keck/NIRC2, and a reanalysis of the discovery data obtained with VLT/SPHERE, we derive colors, spectra, and astrometry for HD 131399 Ab. The broader wavelength coverage and higher data quality allow us to re-investigate its status. Its near-infrared spectral energy distribution excludes spectral types later than L0 and is consistent with a K or M dwarf, which are the most likely candidates for a background object in this direction at the apparent magnitude observed. If it were a physically associated object, the projected velocity of HD 131399 Ab would exceed escape velocity given the mass and distance to HD 131399 A. We show that HD 131399 Ab is also not following the expected track for a stationary background star at infinite distance. Solving for the proper motion and parallax required to explain the relative motion of HD 131399 Ab, we find a proper motion of 12.3 mas/yr. When compared to predicted background objects drawn from a galactic model, we find this proper motion to be high, but consistent with the top 4% fastest-moving background stars. From our analysis we conclude that HD 131399 Ab is a background K or M dwarf.

NASA to launch new manned Mars rovers in 2020

Astronauts would be sent to deep space farther than Earth's orbit by 2019 with the help of NASA's Space Launch System.

Mars Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, land on opposite sides of Mars and begin exploring the planet. Since their landing, the rovers have sent more than 100,000 high-resolution, full-color images of the planet's surface.

The new manned version of Mars rovers has been revealed and is likely to be launched by NASA in 2020. Hollywood movies like Tron inspired the researchers to make this new generation of rovers.

The duo, Shanon and Marc Parker, created these rovers in a span of less than five months. The new type of manned Mars rovers will be around 11-feet tall, 13-feet wide and 24-feet long, and will six wheels and an alien design, a report by Pulse Headlines revealed.

The new rovers were built by the Parker brothers from scratch. It is like an SUV which consists of a mock lab where the astronauts can conduct their experiments. The new design of the manned rovers will be revealed soon by NASA.

The inSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) mission is scheduled to be launched on May 5, 2018. It will arrive on the Red Planet on November 28, 2018, and transmit the newly-collected data regarding the emergence of Mars and how it developed over time, to Earth.

Astronauts would be sent to deep space farther than Earth's orbit by 2019 with the help of NASA's Space Launch System.

Also, Earth's conditions and disturbing natural calamities taking place in its ecosystem, like earthquake, would be analysed by the researchers using NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar.

Apart from this, other missions are lined up which the space agency will be carrying out in the future like the NASA Asteroid Redirect Mission, which is scheduled to take place in 2021 when a sample will be collected from an asteroid.

The agency also plans to carry out the Psyche mission by 2022, in which the unique, metallic asteroid -- Psyche -- which orbits Sun between Mars and Jupiter will be examined. Researchers believe that this would provide them with more data about how planets are formed, Science World Report revealed.
