Dit is ons nieuw hondje Kira, een kruising van een waterhond en een Podenko. Ze is sinds 7 februari 2024 bij ons en druk bezig ons hart te veroveren. Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

In de nacht van 1 op 2 juni is een reusachtige graancirkel ontstaan in Frankrijk. De formatie, die zich bevindt nabij Sancerre, bestaat uit een aantal cirkels waarvan de grootste een doorsnee heeft van ongeveer een halve kilometer.
De graancirkel, net buiten Crézancy-en-Sancerre, trok veel bekijks. Eén van de bezoekers was Didier Chaumien, die besloot met zijn gezin de formatie te bewonderen.
“We hebben nog nooit zoiets gezien in de regio,” vertelde hij aan zender France 3. “Je vraagt je af hoe zoiets wordt gedaan. Nergens zijn sporen achtergelaten. Waanzinnig dit!”
Aangifte
Boer Jean-Paul Millet, de eigenaar van het weiland waarin de graancirkel is verschenen, was minder onder de indruk. Hij heeft aangifte gedaan.
“Het gaat hier om een gebied van één hectare, oftewel een oogst van zes ton,” zei hij tegen Le Journal du Centre.
Eerder
Hij schat dat de cirkels hem een schadepost van ongeveer 1000 euro zullen opleveren. “Ik zie hier het nut niet van in,” aldus de boze boer.
In Frankrijk zijn eerder graancirkels verschenen. In 2012 werden er formaties gevonden in de departementen Nièvre en Loiret en in 2009 werd er één gemeld nabij de stad Bourges.

Wij denken dat er simpelweg een onweerswolk in de lucht hangt, waar dreigende bliksemflitsen in heen en weer dansen.
Echter, soms is dit niet zomaar een onweerswolk, maar één die wordt gebruikt als dimensieportaal voor UFO’s om zo naar verre oorden in ons universum te kunnen reizen.
Wanneer je belangstelling hebt voor UFO's, dan heb je dat waarschijnlijk ook voor de mogelijke manieren waarop deze zich razendsnel kunnen verplaatsen en er bestaan dan ook verschillende theorieën.
Eén van de geopperde mogelijkheden is dat deze ruimteschepen interdimensionaal reizen en daarbij gebruikmaken van een soort dimensiepoorten.
Op dit moment gaan er opnames de wereld rond, waarin precies dat fenomeen te zien is.
Het gaat om een enorme UFO die tevoorschijn komt vanuit een dreigende onweerswolk.
Het is een grote onweerswolk en door de niet aflatende bliksem is de UFO heel goed zichtbaar.
Het is jammer genoeg niet duidelijk waar dit voorval zich heeft voorgedaan of wanneer, maar desalniettemin is het indrukwekkend.
De afgelopen jaren schreven we regelmatig over vreemde wolken die af en toe aan de hemel verschijnen en waar met de regelmaat van de klok UFO’s in en uit vliegen.
Wanneer je dan beelden ziet zoals wij die regelmatig laten zien, waarbij onbekende vliegende objecten met enorme snelheid verdwijnen in een soort onweerswolk om er vervolgens niet meer uit te komen, dan is het niet zo vreemd om te veronderstellen dat we hier te maken hebben met een dimensieportaal.
Een toegangspoort die door buitenaardsen wordt gebruikt om met hun UFO’s op aarde aan te komen en/of te vertrekken, waardoor ze via die poorten de normale beperkingen van tijd en ruimte omzeilen en zo in "no time" andere delen van ons universum kunnen bereiken.
Een wormgat, ook bekend als een Einstein-Rosen brug, is een hypothetische mogelijkheid om binnen de ruimtetijd sneller dan het licht te reizen. In de normale ruimte kan men tussen twee punten niet sneller reizen dan het licht, maar volgens de theorie van een wormgat bestaat er een "korte weg" in het universum. Langs deze korte weg is het dan mogelijk om sneller naar een ander punt in de ruimte te reizen dan wanneer je zou "omreizen" over de normale weg, ook al zou je dat doen met de snelheid van het licht.
De term wormgat werd bedacht door de Amerikaanse theoretisch natuurkundige John Wheeler in 1957, maar het idee van wormgaten was al getheoretiseerd in 1921 door de Duitse wiskundige Hermann Weyl in verband met zijn analyse van de massa in termen van het elektromagnetisch veld.
De naam wormgat komt van de analogie die vroeger gebruikt werd om dit uit te leggen: beeld je in dat het universum de schil van een appel is, en een worm van de éne zijde van de appel naar de andere zijde wil geraken. Als de worm op de schil van de appel blijft is de kortste afstand de helft van de omtrek van de appel. Maar als de worm in plaats van rond te gaan, een gat (wormgat) graaft recht door de appel, is de afstand merkbaar minder, namelijk de diameter van de appel.
Dit zou dan ook verklaren hoe het kan dat buitenaardsen in een oogwenk naar andere planeten kunnen reizen.
Naast de vele voorbeelden die we hebben gezien met vreemde wolken, zijn er ook aanwijzingen dat ze dergelijke wormgaten gebruiken net buiten de atmosfeer in de ruimte rondom onze planeet.
Er komen regelmatig verhalen van mensen die bepaalde flitsen waarnemen aan de hemel. Het duurt maar kort en ze bestrijken ook maar een klein deel van de hemel. Omdat het zo snel gaat, is dit fenomeen ook heel moeilijk vast te leggen.
Degene die dat wel is gelukt, of die het gelukt is dit fenomeen op NASA beelden te vinden, is de bekende Youtube gebruiker Streetcap1.
Het zijn allemaal geen geïsoleerde incidenten. Ook in februari dit jaar schreven wij over een dergelijk voorval in Argentinië.
De opname is enkele dagen geleden gemaakt bij de Zárate-Brazo Largo brug die aan de rand van de Argentijnse stad Buenos Aires ligt.
Al jaren schrijven wij nu over vreemde wolken die niet thuis horen in een bepaald landschap. Onderstaand een dergelijke wolk. Wat ook iedere keer weer kenmerkend is, zijn de bliksemflitsen in de wolk. Alsof je een grote onweerswolk hebt, maar dat eigenlijk niet is.
In de korte video zie je diverse UFO’s ronddartelen waarvan er een aantal met enorme snelheid verdwijnen in de wolk.
Na ongeveer zes seconden zie je er zo één linksboven in beeld verschijnen zoals ook te zien is op de volgende afbeelding.
En wanneer zo’n UFO de wolk in vliegt, ontstaat er op diezelfde plek een bliksemschicht. Wanneer je goed kijkt, dan zie je dat diverse keren gebeuren in die korte video.
De volgende opname is uniek, omdat het ook een bevestiging is van wat verschillende getuigen hebben gezien en van eerder gemaakte en vergelijkbare beelden.
"I was tracking a Fokker Friendship flying from Adelaide to Kingscote on Kangaroo Island," he said.
As the radar slowly turned, Mr Potter said it also pinged a large object near Port Lincoln.
He said this second craft appeared much larger than anything he had seen at that time.
"As the Fokker tracked towards Kangaroo Island, a smaller echo, much smaller than the Fokker, appeared to leave the large echo and fly in a line directly towards the [plane]."
He watched the two signals meet over the skies of Rapid Bay, south of Adelaide, and then saw the smaller object return to the larger one.
Each radar rotation took five seconds to complete.
"With one rotation of the radar antennae, that large echo had moved 70 nautical miles to the north-east," Mr Potter recalled.
"In the next pass it had disappeared off the screen completely."

I was recently in Quintana Roo Mexico and on 5/18/7 observed what appeared to be a metal object 3 to 5 miles off the coast moving in an erratic manner and not like any known aircraft I’d seen. A vivid reflection is what made me notice the tiny object. I watched the object for roughly 60 to 90 seconds before filming the attached video. I immediately knew it was odd and called to my wife to come and look. Before I could turn the recorder back on it moved upwards and disappeared. I’m usually not out looking for videos to post but wanted others to see what I’d seen and judge for themselves.

The Phoenix Lights is undoubtedly one of the most controversial mass UFO sightings in the world that took place 20 years ago. Many witnesses came forward speaking about the Phoenix Lights with credible backgrounds, including the former Governor of Arizona Fife Symington, 71, who was in service from 1990 to 1998.
Mr Symington revealed in a never before seen footage that he was a witness to the one of the biggest ever mass UFO sightings in the world, and he believed it was extra-terrestrial.
The incident remains one of the most puzzling UFO sightings with thousands of witnesses on record. The strange event happened on March 13, 1997, when many had seen large triangular UFOs drifting over Arizona and Phoenix with sizes that varied from a Boeing 747 to multiple football fields.
Mr Symington made the revelation in 2006 in an interview with UFO investigator James Fox, who just released the never before seen footage from the interview to coincide the 20th anniversary of the unusual mass event.
In the recently released footage, Mr Symington states he believes the UFO sighting went all the way up to the Pentagon. He says that they called the Pentagon and thought the latter knew there had been sightings but not talking about it.
According to official Air Force explanation, the UFOs were just flares, which Mr Symington described as a total bunk. Mr Symington notes that he has seen high-altitude flares and there is no way those lights were flares.

Black Knight satellite conspiracy theories are so juicy you wanna believe them. From ancient civilizations to alien technology, the source material is too good to be denied. Nikola Tesla is even involved. Everything connected to Tesla is too good to be true, including David Bowie’s portrayal of him in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige. Wait, and didn’t Nolan also direct The Dark Knight? Doesn’t that sound a lot like Black Knight? There’s another conspiracy for you right there.

In 1901, Tesla published an article in Collier’s Weekly detailing his experiments with electrical currents. He claims he experienced unexplained disturbances in electrical signals, and concludes that the source may have been extraterrestrials trying to communicate.
He wrote, “It was some time afterward when the thought flashed upon my mind that the disturbances I had observed might be due to an intelligent control. Although I could not decipher their meaning, it was impossible for me to think of them as having been entirely accidental. The feeling is constantly growing on me that I had been the first to hear the greeting of one planet to another.”
A Norwegian Engineer Heard Its Signal Transmissions
In 1927, amateur Norwegian radio operator Jørgen Hals discovered long delayed echoes (LDEs), which are echoes of short-wave transmissions. He couldn’t figure out what was causing the LDEs, and neither could anyone else; scientists still don’t know what causes them. One theory is that these echoes were the same signals Tesla heard—and they were coming from intelligent beings in space.
Tesla and Hals both heard radio signals they attributed to intelligent beings from space, but in 1960, Ronald Bracewell took things a step further by publishing a theory on how other life forms might try to communicate with us. According to Bracewell, they would fill a probe or satellite with all the information they wanted to communicate and launch it into space. The probe would then seek civilizations capable of interpreting its messages.
Such a probe is necessary because it can travel great distances, and would need to get close to whichever planet it was trying to communicate with in order to transmit its messages. Were the transmissions Tesla and Hals heard coming from such a satellite?
In 1954, reports emerged that Dr. Lincoln LaPaz of the University of New Mexico spotted two satellites orbiting the Earth. LaPaz denied the claims, but it’s possible the government was trying to cover up the sighting.
Clyde Tombaugh, famed astronomer who discovered Pluto, was at UNM with Lincoln LaPaz during the supposed Black Satellite sighting. Tombaugh and LaPaz were doing secret research for the military on the existence of alien satellites and the origins of other unexplained phenomena. Tombaugh also denied the satellite reports, but in a much more cryptic manner than his colleague.
A Famed UFOlogist Backed the “Two Satellites” Theory

The first satellite released into space, Sputnik 1, was launched by Russia in October 1957. In 1954, three years before Sputnik, retired Marine Corps Major Donald Keyhoe claimed that two satellites were orbiting Earth, and that Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott had personally seen one of them. Talbott denied the claims. Keyhoe was a UFO expert who wrote several nonfiction books on the subject and was taken quite seriously as a journalist.
In February 1960, several magazines and newspapers reported on a mysterious satellite detected by the US military. No one knew where it came from. In March 1960, Time magazine claimed that the object was a retrorocket from a Discoverer satellite. See, when a satellite returns to Earth, it fires a retrorocket to slow its descent; the retrorocket has a parachute, and is supposed to be picked up by scout planes as it falls.
According to Time, when this particular Discoverer launched its retrorocket in August 1959, it disappeared, and no one noticed it orbiting for five months, even though the Department of Defense (DOD) employed people whose sole responsibility was monitoring objects in space. These DOD employees used a radar detector dubbed “Dark Fence” to help alert them to objects orbiting over the US. Here’s how Time explained the blunder:
“Instead of slowing the recovery capsule and bringing it down, the rocket’s thrust had increased the capsule’s speed and put it in a different and higher orbit, where it circled for five months before the still-inexperienced Dark Fence watchers noticed it. With this experience behind them. the space watchers could be expected to do better the next time a silent, unknown satellite starts criss-crossing the sky.”
With that stellar explanation, it’s no wonder some people believe Time’s story was a cover-up.
Some claim that, in 1963, astronaut Gordon Cooper saw a UFO cut across the sky while on the Mercury 9 space flight over Perth, Australia. Reports indicate the object was also seen on the radar at Muchea Tracking Station, outside Perth. Cooper has explicitly denied these claims, but others are convinced he was coerced into silence.
In 1974, Scottish astronomy writer Duncan Lunan purported to have decoded the LDEs Jørgen Hals heard in the ’20s. Lunan claimed they were a map of star system Epsilon Boötis. Could the message have come from aliens on a planet in the Epsilon Boötis system?
It’s More Than 13,000 Years Old

There’s only one problem with Duncan Lunan’s decoded map theory: Arcturus, a bright star from the Boötes constellation, where the Epsilon Boötis system is located, was in the wrong place when checked against star charts. Lunan did some research and discovered that Arcturus had once been located where the map claimed it was—13,000 years ago. This means the probe must have been launched more than 13,000 years ago, when Arcturus was still in that position.
On a 1998 mission, the Endeavor space shuttle captured a picture of something floating outside the craft. NASA wrote it off as a lost thermal blanket, but others contend it seems too rigid to be a blanket.
It Has Visited Earth
In August 2015, footage emerged from Jacksonville, FL showing a mysterious object hovering in the sky. It looked suspiciously like the object in the photo from the Endeavor, and some claim that it’s the Black Knight satellite.
Pepsi Made a Movie Blaming the Government for Covering Up Knowledge of the Black Knight (WTF?)
In 2015, Pepsi released a short film entitled Black Knight Decoded. The story follows characters played by David Oyelowo and Freida Pinto as they decode transmissions from the Black Knight satellite and release them to the world. Throughout the short, the government tries desperately to shut the operation down.
Does the government actually know something about the Black Knight? Maybe, but take this evidence with a grain of salt: it was written and produced by noted liar James Frey. Also, it’s basically just an extended music video for an Usher song. And was made by Pepsi.
It Was Spotted Near the International Space Station
In January 2016, footage from the International Space Station (ISS) showed an object that looks suspiciously like the Black Knight satellite floating nearby. NASA provided no explanation for the mystery object. Is is Sandra Bullock? Did they leave her up there after shooting Gravity? Or could it be the Black Knight satellite
Philip K Dick, author of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which was adapted into Blade Runner, kept a journal, in which he documented his experiences with an extraterrestrial being. Parts of this journal were published in a collection called The Exegesis, which included detailed passages about recurring hallucinations Dick experienced. These visions involved an entity he called the Vast Active Living Intelligence System (VALIS). Dick claimed VALIS was a satellite, the sole purpose of which was to act as a communication tool between humans and extraterrestrial beings. Sound familiar?
No one has been able to pinpoint when these sighting and stories started to coalesce into the Black Knight satellite theory; similarly, no one knows where the name “Black Knight” came from. Some speculate it was taken from a British rocket, but it’s never been proven.

Titan verdient een tweede bezoekje van de mensheid. Maar wat is nu het ideale transportmiddel op Titan? Een luchtballon? Of een boot?
We vinden Titan in de nabijheid van gasreus Saturnus. De maan is met een diameter van 5175 kilometer groter dan onze maan en zelfs groter dan de kleinste planeet in ons zonnestelsel: Mercurius. Maar het is niet de omvang die deze maan zo bijzonder maakt. Nee: de maan trekt de aandacht met zijn atmosfeer. Titan is de enige maan in het zonnestelsel met een dikke atmosfeer die tot zo’n 600 kilometer ver de ruimte in reikt. Die atmosfeer bestaat voornamelijk uit stikstof en methaan. Hoog in de atmosfeer worden de methaan- en stikstofmoleculen opgesplitst door het ultraviolette licht van de zon en daarbij ontstaan organische moleculen. Dat zijn moleculen die koolstof en waterstof bevatten, maar vaak ook stikstof, zuurstof en andere elementen die belangrijk zijn voor het leven zoals wij dat kennen. Met het oog op die bouwblokken van leven vermoeden onderzoekers dat de omstandigheden die nu op Titan een rol spelen, vergelijkbaar zijn met de omstandigheden op aarde, miljoenen jaren voordat het leven op aarde ontstond.

Valleien, duinen en cryovulkanen Terwijl in de atmosfeer van alles gebeurt, is ook het oppervlak van de maan allesbehalve saai. Er bevinden zich rivieren en meren die gevuld zijn met vloeibaar methaan en ethaan. Ook zijn er duintjes te vinden. Deze bestaan niet uit zand, maar uit koolwaterstoffen. Daarnaast lijkt de maan ook cryovulkanen te herbergen. Deze vulkanen spuwen geen lava, maar water. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, lijkt het er sterk op dat op de maan ook sprake is van tektonische activiteit.
Leven? Er gebeurt dus een hoop op Titan. Maar ontstaan zo ook omstandigheden die gunstig zijn voor leven? Wetenschappers zijn verdeeld. Titan is koud: het is er zo’n -178 graden Celsius. Hierdoor gaan de chemische reacties die nodig zijn voor leven zoals wij dat kennen, langzaam. En ook vloeibaar water is er op Titan dus niet – of hooguit kortstondig, bijvoorbeeld in smeltwatermeren die ontstaan na een inslag – te vinden. En water is cruciaal voor het leven zoals wij dat kennen. Dergelijke levensvormen lijken op Titan dus geen kans te hebben. Anders is het wellicht voor wat onderzoekers ‘exotische levensvormen’ noemen: levensvormen die andere elementen gebruiken dan het leven op aarde.
HET EERSTE BEZOEKJE
De mensheid is al eens op Titan geweest. Begin 2005 landde Huygens op het oppervlak van de maan. Het levert spectaculaire beelden op. Maar de lander is maar kort actief: na 72 minuten is de batterij leeg.
Laten we naar Titan gaan Al met al valt er dus nog genoeg te ontdekken op Titan. Maar dat betekent wel dat we ernaar toe moeten gaan. De dikke atmosfeer van de maan onttrekt het oppervlak aan het zicht, waardoor observaties vanuit een baan rond de maan of Saturnus hun beperkingen hebben. We moeten echt het oppervlak van de maan op gaan zoeken om meer over Titan te weten te komen. Maar hoe kunnen we dat nu het beste doen. Wetenschappers hebben daar al lang en breed over nagedacht en zijn in het verleden met de volgende voorstellen gekomen:

Dankzij Huygens (zie kader) weten we dat de atmosfeer van Titan helder genoeg is om vanuit de lucht foto’s van het oppervlak te maken. Dus het is helemaal niet zo’n gek idee om Titan vanuit de lucht in kaart te brengen. Een ander voordeel van een luchtballon is dat deze naar allerlei delen van Titan kan vliegen en dus een groot deel van de maan kan bestuderen. Iets wat met behulp van een lander onmogelijk is. De ballon zou bovendien – zonder al te veel energie te verbruiken – meerdere jaren in de atmosfeer van Titan actief kunnen blijven.
Met de onderzeeër
De onderzeeër zou een kijkje kunnen nemen in het grootste meer dat Titan rijk is: Kraken Mare. Dit meer is zo’n 1000 kilometer lang en naar schatting zo’n 300 meter diep. De onderzeeër zou onder meer uit kunnen zoeken hoe het meer in elkaar steekt en wat er op de bodem van het meer allemaal te vinden is.
Met een drone
Een quadcopter zou heel geschikt zijn om delen van Titan in kaart te brengen. De drone zou rond kunnen vliegen, maar ook zo af en toe kunnen landen om bepaalde oppervlaktekenmerken van dichtbij te bekijken of materiaal van het oppervlak te verzamelen. Dat materiaal zou deze terug kunnen brengen naar een lander die het nader analyseert.

Met een boot
De boot zou mooi rondjes kunnen varen op één van de meren die Titan rijk is. Gedacht werd bijvoorbeeld aan Ligeia Mare, één van de grootste meren van Titan. De boot zou uit kunnen zoeken hoe diep het meer is, hoe de atmosfeer boven het meer in elkaar steekt, hoe de kustlijn eruit ziet, de chemie van het meer en het weer boven het meer in kaart kunnen brengen.
Terughoudend
De hierboven genoemde voorstellen zijn natuurlijk ook bij NASA en ESA ingediend. En aanvankelijk vonden ze wel gehoor. Verschillende van deze concept-missies zijn verder uitgezocht. Maar geen van de voorstellen is – tot op heden – werkelijkheid geworden. Dat is waarschijnlijk te verklaren middels de reden waarom veel wetenschappers deze missies zo graag werkelijkheid zien worden: Titan is uniek. Nog niet eerder hebben we een luchtballon ingezet om een ander hemellichaam dan de aarde te verkennen. En nog niet eerder hebben we op buitenaardse zeeën gevaren of een duik genomen in buitenaardse meren. Alles is dus nieuw. En dat betekent tevens dat de risico’s groot zijn. Want in theorie kan een luchtballon misschien prima in de lucht blijven, maar de praktijk kan anders zijn. Hetzelfde geldt natuurlijk voor de andere voorstellen. En dus zijn ruimtevaartorganisaties wat terughoudend. Zo werd door NASA uiteindelijk ten koste van de Titan-boot gekozen voor Marslander Insight. En zetten NASA en ESA plannen voor een Titan-lander en -luchtballon in de ijskast om een missie naar Jupiter op poten te kunnen zetten.
Is een missie naar Titan dan echt ondenkbaar? Op korte termijn zeer zeker. Maar de fascinatie en dus ook het verlangen om deze maan opnieuw eens van dichterbij te bekijken, blijft. En misschien wordt dat verlangen op korte termijn wel aangewakkerd door de kamikazeduik die Cassini – de enige ruimtesonde die op dit moment Saturnus en zijn manen in de gaten houdt en menig geheim van Titan blootlegde – binnenkort in Saturnus’ atmosfeer maakt. Vanaf dat moment raakt de mysterieuze maan buiten ons gezichtsveld en lijken de antwoorden op de vele vragen die er nog zijn, verder weg dan ooit. En misschien gaat dat wel zodanig aan de mensheid knagen dat het bouwen van een 425 miljoen doller kostend bootje opeens aantrekkelijk wordt. Laten we het stiekem hopen!
We have been trying to communicate and receive messages from aliens for around 50 years. From radio waves to lasers, from strange signals to hydrogen speaking across the universe: what progress have we made?
THE COSMIC CHORUS
The Universe is full of noises — and Earth now also contributes to the cacophony. The first time we called out to the stars was on November 19, 1962 with The Morse Message. This message was sent in Morse code from the Evpatoria Planetary Radar to Venus. What did we say? “MIR” — the Russian word for both world and peace. This was followed a few days later on November 24 by “LENIN” and “SSSR” (Russia’s leader and the abbreviation for the Soviet Union, respectively). Later, in 1999, a team headed by Alexander Zaitsev, a rogue Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) member, beamed Cosmic Call 1 to four nearby suns from the Yevpatoria RT-70 radio telescope in Crimea. He called his system Messaging to Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI).
He argued that his decision was due to the SETI Paradox, which he characterized as “This paradoxical disparity of effort, a passionate desire to receive and no corresponding attempt to give.” He also stated that he did “not want to live in a cocoon, in a ‘one-man island.'”
Similar messages were subsequently sent out in 2001 (Teen Age Message), 2003 (Cosmic Call 2), and 2008 (A Message From Earth). These messages caused fierce debate within the scientific coommunity, prompting multiple meetings by the Royal Society in 2010 on the topic of “Towards a Scientific and Societal Agenda on Extraterrestrial Life.”
SETI has sent authorized messages into the cosmos, including the Lone Signal in 2013 and A Simple Response to an Elemental Message in 2016. Other messages not related to or verified by SETI have also been sent, such as the the Hello From Earth message in 2009.
In response, we have heard very little back, causing some to dub the universe “The Great Silence” — David Brin told Phys.org that the most obvious possibilities have now been ruled out, “including gaudy tutorial beacons that advanced ETCs would supposedly erect.”
A particularly exciting narrowband radio signal from space was detected by the Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope in 1977, which many have since dubbed the Wow! Signal, although it has now been shown to probably be caused by comets. A less notable example is Radio source SHGb02+14a, which was detected in 2003. The radio source was 1420 MHz and lasted for a minute each time it was observed, although the signal was extremely weak.
HOW DO WE SPEAK TO ALIENS?
There are two aspects of our communication with aliens: how we send it, and what we say. There has been vigorous discussion about both facets of inter-galaxy communication.
The main means we currently have of broadcasting ourselves across the universe is through radio signals. Frequency modulated radio waves were used when we projected a message from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico in 1974: it contained, in binary, pictorial representations of humanity, formulas for the elements and compounds that make up DNA, as well as representations of the Solar System. Other systems have been more manual: for example, the Pioneer 10 and 11 probes bolting ‘Pioneer Plaques’ to their doors.
Future efforts will try to update this system, using either the more sophisticated radio signals we possess today, or turning to lasers to beam ourselves to other planets. METI will begin their search by beaming to Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to our sun.
Douglas Vakoch, the former director of Interstellar Message Composition at the SETI Institute and president of METI, said to Forbes, “It’s too late to conceal ourselves in the universe, so we should decide how we want to represent ourselves.” But how can we know how what we choose to represent is what will be received when we have no comprehension of the technology aliens may be using, or of their specific culture?
The central debate over what we send to aliens stems from what they would think if they received a signal. Opinion is split among scientific heavyweights over whether aliens would be benevolent or malevolent. Carl Sagan believes that any contact would be benign because, as he stated in his novel Contact, written in 1985, “In the long run, the aggressive civilizations destroy themselves, almost always.” On the other hand, Stephen Hawking believes that “if aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”
Other specialists such as Seth Shostak, an astronomer at SETI, think that if we truly believed in a threat, we would be more careful about all radio use; he told phys.org, “We cannot pretend that our present level of activity with respect to broadcasting or radar usage is ‘safe.’ If danger exists, we’re already vulnerable.”
An encounter with aliens is a real possibility, and one that would have earth-changing consequences. When we will meet them is anyone’s guess — it may be in ten years, it may be never — but it is important to have discussion surrounding how to deal with an encounter to prepare for every possible outcome.

A family stumbles upon a mysterious seemingly otherworldly sphere in the middle of the woods with strange behaviors…
Terry Betz was just a 21 year old pre-med student when he discovered the mysterious gleaming artifact, on his parent's burnt woodland acreage, on historic Fort George Island, on Florida's Bermuda coast.
It was a shiny, metal sphere, about the size of a volleyball. It was highly polished and perfectly smooth with only one exception: A tiny triangular symbol etched onto it's surface, which seemed to be magnetic.
It seemed the only direction the strange sphere could have come from, was up. Perhaps it was some sort of satellite that had dropped from orbit, but it showed no signs of scorch marks from re-entry. The recent forest fire that exposed it did not seem to leave any burn marks either.
When they got the sphere home they were shocked to see it start vibrating as though a small motor were inside, and it rolled on it's own power as if exploring it's new surroundings, checking out the entire room for several minutes, before returning to it's starting point. When placed on a table top, it would roll right up to the edge and then change direction to avoid falling off, even rolling upwards when the table was tilted forward.
It also reacted to Terry's guitar playing by vibrating like a tuning fork, which disturbed the family dog so much she would whimper and cringe, covering her ears with her paws. The family soon started noticing the ghostly sound of organ music playing throughout the house, and doors slamming for no apparent reason.
The US Navy was invited to analyze the sphere, who concluded, “They knew it wasn't theirs, but there’s certainly something odd about it.” Their most powerful x-rays were unable to penetrate two inner cores of unusual density inside the thick, stainless steel shell. They'd have to cut it open to examine it.
Other scientific researchers, including Project Blue Book advisor Dr. Allen Hynek, also examined the sphere and discovered it was emitting radio waves, and was emitting an impossible magnetic field that defied modern physics by fluctuating from multiple poles.
They also calculated that the inner core must contain an element far heavier than the most radioactive element on Earth, and that if the sphere was ever pierced, “perhaps the masses would go critical’ and explode like an atomic bomb.” Shortly after this announcement, the Betz family and the sphere disappeared, never to be heard from again.

De rover Curiosity arriveerde in 2012 op Mars en heeft de meest geavanceerde uitrusting tot nu toe. Hij kan videobeelden maken en rots-, bodem- en luchtstalen nemen die hij ter plaatse analyseert.
Marsmissie
NASA is van plan om tegen 2020 weer een rover naar Mars te sturen, die op zoek moet gaan "naar tekenen van vroeger microbieel leven en kernstalen verzamelen voor een mogelijke terugkeer naar de aarde," aldus het ruimtevaartagentschap. De organisatie hoopt in de loop van de jaren 2030 mensen naar Mars te sturen en is bijgevolg op zoek naar transportmogelijkheden.

Aside from all the neato deep space exploration NASA conducts, one of the space agency’s responsibilities includes keeping track of all the potentially dangerous objects hurtling around our own neck of the space woods. NASA tracks over 15,000 so-called near-Earth objects (NEOs), many of which have been passing uncomfortably close to Earth lately. The threat of these NEOs is so great that NASA and FEMA have recently teamed up for asteroid strike preparedness drills and the White House itself drafted its first “National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy” earlier this year. We’re surrounded.
A team of astronomers from the Czech Academy of Sciences just released new data which show that Earth faces a larger threat from asteroid strikes than we realize. To make that claim, the researchers studied the Taurid meteor shower, an annual autumnal encounter with the comet Encke which creates bright fireballs as small chunks of rock and ice burn up in our atmosphere.

Using observatory data of Taurid fireballs seen in the sky throughout 2015, the astronomers believe they have discovered a new branch of the Taurid meteor shower with a clear orbital structure which puts it on a collision course with Earth every few years. Their results have been published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Taurid meteorites are sometimes called “Halloween Fireballs” for their timing each year.
According to an accompanying press release, the Czech astronomers believe that some of the asteroids in this new branch of the Taurid meteor shower could be hundreds of meters across, making the annual shower more dangerous than we realize:
During that time, the chance of impact of a sizeable asteroid (tens of meters) is significantly enhanced. Even if intrinsically weak, bodies of such size can penetrate deep in the atmosphere and pose a hazard to the ground. Further studies leading to better description of this real source of potentially hazardous objects, which can be large enough to cause significant regional or even continental damage, are therefore extremely important.
Let that sink in: continental damage. Oh, and did I mention NASA also recently discovered 28 new near Earth objects, ten of which are classified as potentially dangerous? Yep, it’s one of those days. If you need me, I’ll be out back digging my bunker. Remember: low-acid canned goods can last up to five years. After that, well, hopefully you can learn to hunt – if any animals remain alive after the shockwave hits. The more we learn about the dangers of space and the histories of our planet and our galactic neighbors, it’s becoming clearer and clearer that it’s not a question of if but of when and how bad. Just hope you’re one of the lucky millions to be vaporized instantly. Some fates are much, much worse than death.
What would you think if you saw an intense, glowing blue light making a strange humming noise moving behind some trees across the street from your house? Your answer may depend on whether you believe in space aliens, conspiracy theories like Project Blue Beam, inter- dimensional portals, ball lightning or physics. Whatever you thought it was, what it turns out to be can’t be good. That was the case this week in Dayton, Ohio, when a man who was quick with his cell phone took a video of an eerie blue light passing behind some trees in his neighborhood during a severe storm. What did HE think it was?
The incident occurred on June 5th in Dayton, Ohio – home of Wright Patterson Air Force Base and another potential answer to the question – and the witness was Chip Beale. The intensity of the storm and winds is obvious in the video, which appears to have been taken outside but under a covering. Beale passed the video on to his brother Scott Beale who posted it on the Laughing Squid website – the company he founded – giving it a tremendous amount of Internet exposure. Most would agree that the intense blue color, the strange humming sound and the slow movement make the light pretty eerie.
Should Chris Beale have turned and run for the hills … or at least an alien-safe bunker at Wright Patterson? Yes and no. The bright flash prior to the light and hum give a hint at what the probable cause was – an electrical ‘arc flash’ triggered by something in the storm, though not necessarily a lightning strike. According to General Electric, it may have been a branch touching a wire that sparked the flash which then traveled along the wire until it reached a transformer or a pole that stopped it.

The spark caused the wet and electrically charged air to ionize into the arc. That blue light was intense for a reason – the temperature of the arc flash could have been as high as 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat is hot enough to vaporize steel while the light is intense enough to cause blindness.
Fortunately, Chris Beale was not injured, burned or blinded and got 15 minutes of fame with his video of something that wasn’t alien or part of a secret government program. However, it was still a bad sign and a warning of potential worse things happening. Arc flashes are not rare — only catching them on video is. Electrical grids are built with protections to prevent arc flashes, but the deteriorating infrastructure of the nation’s electrical system means those protections are rusting, corroding, losing insulation, breaking down and short-circuiting to the point where they’re just one small incident away (think squirrel) from creating eerie blue lights all over the place.
Sometimes, explainable phenomena are more frightening that the unexplained.

An eyewitness has given a description of her bizarre experience while climbing Temple Mount, a holy site in the city of Jerusalem. She described numerous inexplicable events occurring in the heavens over the site which has spawned a great deal of controversy and numerous theories online as people have struggled to make sense of the unusual event.
WHAT CAUSED THE BIZARRE LIGHT SHOW AT TEMPLE MOUNT?
he eyewitness claimed that she was walking up Temple Mount with the intention of partaking in silent prayer when she realized that the skies were littered with rainbow lights. She became aware of a circle of cloud and light which appeared to be highly energetic wrapping itself around the old temple site. She began to take pictures of what she could see and realized that glowing orbs of light had also started to appear in the air. Shortly after she took the first photographs of her vision of the skies, she noticed that the scene was changing in a dramatic and disturbing way. While there had only been one sun in the sky at the beginning of her encounter, she could now see three suns in the sky.
She also claimed to witness blasts of light, beams of energy and rainbows flying through the sky. Initially, she wondered if she was having a religious experience as this occurred at a holy site which she had visited to make communion with her faith. However, she doubted this as she withdrew from the scene as she did not experience a sense of calm or peace. On the contrary, she felt highly disturbed and agitated by the experience. After researching the topic and speaking with friends, she suggested that the event could have been caused by the activities at CERN in Switzerland. It has long been suspected that the atom splitting experiments at CERN have been responsible for opening temporary pathways into alternative dimensions and it is possible that she witnessed one of these events.
Not everyone is convinced by the theory that CERN is responsible for this bizarre event and others like it. For some years there have been some disturbing stories from various places in the world regarding apparent holographic images appearing in the sky including entire floating holographic cities over China and Nigeria. These incidents are all believed to be connected to a covert multi-governmental program called Operation Blue Beam which is designed to use holographic technology to frighten the world’s population into submission. Could it be possible that this was another test of this sinister technology?
A further theory has also emerged surrounding the strange appearance of the clouds in the images submitted by the eye witness. It has been suggested that these cloudy stripes could be chemtrails which had an effect on the atmosphere where they were deployed.
At this time, none of these theories have been completely proven, but one thing is for sure – something very strange is going on.
Summary of Events: In 1976 on the Spanish Canary Island an extremely intensive wave of UFO sightings began. The case file is filled with multiple witness sightings, agreeing in great detail as to what was seen over the island. This highly unusual event actually began on the night of June, 22. Residents of Tenerife, La Palma, and La Gomera began reporting unusual lights in the sky almost simultaneously. The Canary Island investigation would also include a rarity-the credibility of testimony of eyewitnesses was based on social status: that is, a report by an engineer would be of more value than that of a laborer.
Yellow-Blue Lights: An armed Navy escort ship, the "Atrevida" would make the very first report of unusual activity in the skies. The ship was three and one-half miles off the coast of Fuerteventura Island. At 9:27 PM, the crew observed an extremely intense yellow-blue light which was coming from the shore of the island out to sea. The captain of the vessel made a detailed report of the sighting in the ship's log. The UFO was also seen and reported by residents of the island, with three villages-Galdar, Las Rosas, and Agaete making the heaviest reports.
Detailed Investigation: An Investigator Adjutant would do a thorough search through military and civilian air logs, and state that there were not any aerial flights, or exercises which might account for the reports. The Spanish Air Force would conduct an extremely detailed account of all of the sightings. Their report listed fourteen different, "highly credible" witness statements. The glowing object was also photographed by several different witnesses, from different locations and angles.
Most Dramatic Account: The most dramatic account of the Canary Island sightings comes from a physician, Doctor Francisco Padron Leon, who was traveling in a cab at the time, making a house call, arriving at the patient's house, he and the cab driver saw an incredible sight, a large, glowing sphere of blue. The doctor watched the sphere long enough to make a very detailed report on the anomalous object. He described the sphere as having a radius of 100 feet, with the lower part of the inside of the orb having a platform made of an aluminum-like material.
Descriptions of the Aliens: Two tall alien beings, 8-10 feet in height, manned the platform, or control center for the sphere, one on one side, one on the other. The aliens were wearing clothes of a red color, and they always looked directly at each other while performing their duties. The beings were humanoid shaped, with heads disproportionately large for the rest of their bodies. They wore a helmet. The doctor was able to glean such a good description of the beings and platform because the sphere was totally transparent. He could see stars through the sphere.
The Orb Moves Away: As he watched the enigmatic sphere, it began to grow larger and larger as it began to move away from the island toward the town of Tenerfie. After reaching its ultimate size, it then dissolved into a small size before disappearing. A neighbor who lived near the doctor's patient, was watching television at the time, when the screen went blank, and her dogs began to bark loudly outside her home. She ran to a window to check on what the dogs were barking at, and saw the doctor's cab, and the alien sphere. She reported seeing two figures in the sphere.
Conclusions: Throughout the remainder of the year, various and sundry reports were made of similar objects over Canary. An official governmental report would be released, but it was ambiguous at best. They accepted the reports of the UFOs as valid, but would not accept the alien presence. This was done to allow the possibility that the UFOs could be an unknown Air Force exercise. Giving credence to the reports of alien beings would necessitate accepting an extraterrestrial explanation for the entire event. The Canary Island alien sphere event is considered legitimate by many investigators.
One of the more intriguing UFO cases on record – one which still remains pretty much unknown and under-investigated – came from the late English UFO researcher Ernie Sears. It’s a story that Ernie – who was quite a character – shared with me back in the summer of 1995. Sears joined the Royal Air Force during World War Two and left the service in 1947. In 1960, he was involved in a UFO incident that had a life-changing effect on him and caused him to take the subject seriously. In short, he was witness to an encounter involving a pair of Royal Air Force planes whose crews, seemingly, were ordered to pursue a UFO in the skies over England. Something unidentified had penetrated British airspace.
Ernie Sears
Of particular interest is the setting of Sears encounter: the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment, Portsmouth, England. The U.K’s National Archives states of the ASWE: “The Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment originated in an Experimental Department set up in 1917 at HM Signal School, Portsmouth, to coordinate research work undertaken since 1896 on the Torpedo School ships HMS Defiance and HMS Vernon. In 1941 the Experimental Department became the Admiralty Signal Establishment which, like its predecessors, was largely concerned with communications. However, technological advances during the Second World War necessitated an increase in related fields of research, and in 1948 these were brought under one body, the Admiralty Signal and Radar Establishment at Portsmouth. In 1959 it was decided that missile technology justified an extension of its scope, and on being amalgamated with the Admiralty Gunnery Establishment (AGE) it received the title of Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment (ASWE).”

While walking through the streets of the nearby town of Gosport, Sears noticed a “glowing cigar” in the sky which appeared to be hovering over the ASWE facility. Sears told me: “I thought, well, it must be an aircraft struggling against the wind, and the sun is shining off it making it glow.” As the minutes went by, though, Sears realized that his initial thought was very wide of the mark. The skies were suddenly filled with the noise of a couple of military aircraft, which were heading in the direction of the ASWE. Sears further told me:
“I ran to a vantage point where I could see where those aircraft were coming from. They were two Meteor jets, very low over the rooftops [and] very noisy. They were climbing up to where, half an hour later, to my amazement, there was this ‘cigar’ still hanging in the sky. I immediately knew that it wasn’t an aircraft. It hadn’t moved an inch; it was just hanging there. These two jets climbed up towards it, and as they got near it, it turned on end and it was like somebody switching a light bulb out; it disappeared.
“I ran to a phone box and I found the number of Thorney Island aerodrome. I got the control tower and said, ‘Can you just tell me what that object was over Portsdown Hill that those two Meteor jets were chasing?’ He said, ‘You didn’t see any object, neither did you see any jets.’

“The odd thing was,” said Sears, “my brother-in-law at the time used to work at the ASWE and he happened to come over the next night, just for a social visit. He walked in and my wife went out into the kitchen to make him a cup of tea, and I just said to him: ‘You had some excitement over your place yesterday morning, didn’t you?’ He looked at me, and his face went grey, then it went white and his mouth set in a grim line. I said, ‘Okay, don’t worry; forget I said it.'”
It was the end of a strange and baffling affair. But, it was event which led Ernie Sears to devote much of his life to investigating the UFO phenomenon.
Lockheed Martin has just revealed some details about the SR-72, the successor to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft. The SR-72 hypersonic plane will be a strike and reconnaissance aircraft that tops Mach 6.
NEW DETAILS ON SR-72
On June 7, Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Development Programs (ADP), also known as Skunk Works, revealed new information about their hypersonic technologies. Specifically, they discussed the successor to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft: the SR-72, a strike and reconnaissance aircraft. The SR-72 tops Mach 6, and is currently in development within the advanced aircraft-development division. According to Lockheed Martin’s statements to Aviation Week, hypersonic technologies, including a combined cycle propulsion system that blends a rocket engine and a supersonic jet engine, are sufficiently advanced to allow the planned SR-72 project to begin.
A hypersonic successor to the SR-71 has been the ultimate goal for DARPA and the Air Force (USAF) since the early 2000s. In 2013, the USAF, at last, announced that it had begun to design a scaled SR-72 demonstrator. Since that time, however, details about the program have been scarce, if the information was released at all. Here’s what we know now.
In 2006, Lockheed sought out Aerojet Rocketdyne for a partnership; it was this alliance that led to the creation of the combined cycle engine, modified from an off-the-shelf turbine. Ground tests on a combined cycle engine built with elements of both a rocket engine and a scramjet were conducted between 2013 to 2017.

HYPERSONICS ARE THE FUTURE
The advanced aircraft division is also close to launching the full-scale development of a flight research vehicle (FRV) for either piloted or remote use. This FRV should be similar to an F-22 in size and have a backup full combined cycle propulsion system. Lockheed believes they’ll be flying an FRV in the early 2020s, while the SR-72 will probably be airborne by 2030. As more details and information about the first flights are revealed, we should see more of the fascinating details of the SR-72.
“We’ve been saying hypersonics [are] two years away for the last 20 years, but all I can say is the technology is mature and we, along with DARPA and the services, are working hard to get that capability into the hands of our warfighters as soon as possible,” Lockheed Martin executive vice president and Skunk Works general manager Rob Weiss told Aviation Week.
Hypersonic planes can travel at speeds of up to 4,800 km/hour (3,000 mph), making them the ideal transportation option for long-distance travel and global emergency response efforts. In fact, after an exciting beginning with the 1967 flight of the X-15, American hypersonic research has basically stagnated. But, now that NASA has brought its X-Planes program back and both military and civilian entities are more interested in the technology along with the dynamic outer space race that has been building, it seems obvious that the coming years will reveal a renaissance of research and development into hypersonic vehicles.

Things are definitely looking up for SpaceX, as the company has recently enjoyed a series of achievements and accomplishments that are helping to prepare it for its planned 2030 Mars mission. SpaceX is currently busy with a number of other missions, however, the most popular of which being the private Moon mission.
But it looks like SpaceX is involved in a secret mission from the U.S. Air Force as well. This activity was revealed by Secretary Heather Wilson on Tuesday. “SpaceX will be sending the next Air Force payload up into space in August,” she said during a webcast testimony to the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee.
This payload is the Air Force’s highly secretive space drone, the X-37B. It’ll be launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which first received certification from the Air Force to launch sensitive and costly payloads from the military back in 2015.

“We are excited about this new partnership on creating flexible and responsive launch options and are confident in SpaceX’s ability to provide safe and assured access to space for the X-37B program,” said Randy Walden, director of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office.
Securing private and government contracts works well for SpaceX. It provides the company with the funding needed to continue their rocket research. This capacity to further test and develop their reusable rockets will also allow SpaceX to reduce the cost of space travel.
Aside from its NASA and Air Force contracts, SpaceX’s logs list a number of private commissions, ranging from telco satellite launches to even contracts with Airbus and Bigelow Aerospace. Hopefully, this bountiful cooperation will yield widespread advancements in space exploration and travel.

The 300,000-year-old bones and stone tools were discovered in a surprising place—and could revise the history of our species.

Hundreds of thousands of years ago, around 62 miles west of what would eventually become Marrakesh, a group of people lived in a cave overlooking a lush Moroccan landscape. They rested there, building fires to keep themselves warm. They hunted there, sharpening stone tools to bring down animals. And they died there, leaving their bones behind in the dirt. At the time, there would have been nothing particularly notable about these cave-dwellers. They were yet more Homo sapiens, members of a nascent ape species that had spread across Africa. But in their death, they have become singularly important.
It’s not just when these people died that matters, but where. Their presence in north Africa complicates what was once a tidy picture of humanity arising in the east of the continent. “What people, including myself, used to think was that there was a cradle of humankind in East Africa about 200,000 years ago, and all modern humans descend from that population,” says Philipp Gunz from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, who was involved in the new excavation. “The new finds indicate that Homo sapiens is much older and had already spread across all of Africa by 300,000 years ago. They really show that the African story of our species was more complex than what we used to think.”

Jebel Irhoud rose to prominence in 1961, when miners turned the site into a quarry. They were looking for barite minerals, but to their surprise, they found a fossilized skull. Soon, they disinterred more bones: another skull, a child’s jaw, and fragments of arm bones and hips. From the start, these specimens were controversial. Their exact location was never recorded, which makes it very hard to work out their age. Scientists initially thought that they were the 40,000-year-old remains of Neanderthals—and were wrong on both counts. They’re much older, and they’re more likely to be Homo sapiens.
After those discoveries, Jebel Irhoud was neglected. But in 2004, Jean-Jacques Hublin from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology led a team back to the site, clearing away decades’ worth of accumulated debris in a search for more fossils. And after a few seasons of digging, they found some—a partial skull, fragments of facial bones, a nearly complete adult jawbone, and other bits and pieces from at least five individuals.
These people had very similar faces to today’s humans, albeit with slightly more prominent brows. But the backs of their heads were very different. Our skulls are rounded globes, but theirs were lower on the top and longer at the back. If you saw them face on, they could pass for a modern human. But they turned around, you’d be looking at a skull that’s closer to extinct hominids like Homo erectus. “Today, you wouldn’t be able to find anyone with a braincase that shape,” says Gunz.

Their brains, though already as large as ours, must also have been shaped differently. It seems that the size of the human brain had already been finalized 300,000 years ago, but its structure—and perhaps its abilities—were fine-tuned over the subsequent millennia of evolution.
At Jebel Irhoud, the team also found several stone tools—small pieces of flint with sharp edges. Several of these had clearly been heated in the distant past, but not because their makers were deliberately burning the implements. More likely, “you can imagine that people were dropping stones on the ground, and later starting fires on top,” explains Shannon McPherron, an expert on stone tools who was involved in the new study.
The team exploited this incidental heating to date the tools. Over time, flint gradually builds up a small charge as it reacts to natural sources of radiation around it. That charge dissipates whenever it’s heated, before growing again. By testing the stones back in their lab, McPherron’s team could work out how much charge they had accumulated since they were last heated—which must have been when they were dropped in the caves. This technique, known as thermoluminescence, told them that the tools were roughly 280,000 and 350,000 years old.

The team checked those dates by estimating the ages of the fossils. They first did that a decade ago, using the fossils collected in the 1960s, and they arrived at an age of 160,000 years. But that was based on imperfect guesses about the sediments in which the bones had been buried. This time, after taking careful readings from the site itself, the team could more accurately re-do their calculations. They got a much older date of 286,000 years, which matches well to the estimated age of the tools. “I think it’s a pretty tight picture,” says McPherron.
The new dates radically change the position of the Jebel Irhoud residents in the family tree of our species. Based on the earlier age estimates, scientists had always viewed these people as a primitive group of humans who were clinging on in North Africa while their more modern cousins were sweeping out of the East. “People thought that North Africa had nothing to do with modern human evolution, and that this was a relict population,” says Gunz. “Now we know that they’re close to the root of the Homo sapiens lineage.”
The new specimens cast fossils from other parts of Africa in a new light. For example, the so-called Florisbad skull, which was discovered in South Africa in 1932, is around 260,000 years old. Based on that old age, “people had a hard time accepting this as a member of Homo sapiens, but I think our work brings the Florisbad skull back into the discussion,” says Gunz. If the skull really did belong to a member of our species, it means that around 300,000 years ago, humans had already “migrated across the African landscape, and were evolving at a continental scale,” says Gunz.
The team have done a good job, says Erella Hovers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, but “whether this is a breakthrough in our understanding of human evolution, I’m not sure.” Others had already suggested that the origin of our species was tied to the dawn of the Middle Stone Age—a period between 250,000 and 300,000 years ago, when people went from making large stone hand-axes to smaller, lighter tools like awls and spear tips. Those lighter tools had already been found in other parts of Africa, so the Jebel Irhoud finds “support a hypothesis that has been around for a while,” Hovers says.
That’s true, says McPherron, but until now, the bones and stones were telling different tales. The stones were all over Africa by 300,000 years ago, and the fossils were apparently no older than 195,000. Were the tools even made by Homo sapiens or some other hominid? “We had a disjuncture,” he says. “We had a major transition in behavior but no biological transition to go with it. Jebel Irhoud fills that gap nicely.”
It’s possible that people spread all over Africa, aided by their new stone technology, which allowed them to kill large animals from a distance. Certainly the Sahara would have permitted their passage: At the time, it was a lush, green savannah and not the impassable desert of today. Alternatively, humans may have already spread throughout the continent, and regional innovators developed Middle Stone Age tools independently.
Regardless, the new finds are “a very important discovery,” says Zeray Alemseged from the University of Chicago. “They’re placed at a critical time period when the earliest members of our species could have evolved, and they’re critical for better understanding the patterns of physical and behavioral evolution [among humans] across the African continent. They confirm the pan-African nature of human ancestry.”
