Enorme inslag kan drie vreemde trekjes van Mars verklaren

Vroeg in de geschiedenis van Mars zou een planetoïde ter grootte van Ceres op de planeet zijn geklapt.
Mars heeft verscheidene vreemde trekjes en drie ervan blijven de gemoederen bezighouden. Ten eerste is het noordelijk halfrond (dat gekenmerkt wordt door vlakke laaglanden) absoluut anders dan het zuidelijk halfrond (dat gekenmerkt wordt door vele kraters). Daarnaast bezit de rode planeet twee manen met een bijzondere vorm (Deimos en Phobos). En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, is de samenstelling van Mars ook nog eens heel anders dan die van bijvoorbeeld de aarde. Zo bevinden zich in de mantel veel zeldzame metalen, zoals platina, iridium en osmium.
Zeldzame metalen Een nieuw onderzoek richtte zich in eerste instantie op laatstgenoemde vreemde trekje: de zeldzame metalen. De onderzoekers berekenden eerst welk deel van de mantel uit deze zeldzame metalen bestaat. Het zou gaan om zo’n 0,8 procent. Aangezien deze elementen normaal gesproken aangetroffen worden in de kernen van rotsachtige werelden, leek het de onderzoekers aannemelijk dat de elementen op Mars zijn afgezet tijdens planetoïde-inslagen. Maar hoe groot waren die planetoïden dan? En hoe vaak sloegen er planetoïden in? Om dat te achterhalen, voerden de onderzoekers een groot aantal simulaties uit. Eén van die simulaties resulteerde in een uitkomst die wel heel dicht bij de werkelijkheid in de buurt komt. En in die simulatie klapte er 4,43 miljard jaar geleden een enorme planetoïde (van zeker 1200 kilometer groot) op Mars.
Noordelijk versus het zuidelijk halfrond Zo’n grote planetoïde is niet alleen nodig om de grote hoeveelheid elementen die we nu in de Martiaanse korst aantreffen, te verklaren. De omvangrijke inslag kan ook verklaren waarom het noordelijk halfrond er heel anders uitziet dan het zuidelijk halfrond. De inslag moet de korst van Mars namelijk radicaal veranderd hebben, waardoor het ene halfrond zich vandaag de dag duidelijk onderscheidt van het andere halfrond. De onderzoekers gaan ervan uit dat de inslag plaatsvond op het noordelijk halfrond. Het feit dat de korst op het noordelijk halfrond er veel jonger uitziet dan de korst op het zuidelijk halfrond lijkt dat te onderschrijven.
De manen En als klap op de vuurpijl kan zo’n enorme inslag ook het bestaan van de vreemde manen Deimos en Phobos verklaren. Door de inslag moet rond Mars een ring van puin zijn ontstaan. En uit dat puin zouden deze maantjes tot stand zijn gekomen. Het zou verklaren waarom de manen bestaan uit een mix van Martiaans en niet-Martiaans materiaal.
“Deze oplossing is heel elegant, aangezien het drie interessante en bijzondere problemen omtrent de totstandkoming van Mars oplost,” vindt onderzoeker Stephen Mojzsis. Grote vraag is nu echter of deze fraaie theorie ook werkelijk klopt. De onderzoekers hopen daar in de toekomst meer over te weten te komen door meteorieten afkomstig van Mars te bestuderen. Mogelijk getuigen zij van de vermeende catastrofe die Mars meer dan 4 miljard jaar geleden trof.
Het piepkleine Marsmaantje Phobos is vanaf de aarde alleen door de ‘ogen’ van goede telescopen te zien. De Hubble ruimtetelescoop zag het maantje om de rode planeet draaien.
De video bestaat uit dertien frames, die in een periode van 22 minuten zijn opgenomen. De foto’s zijn gemaakt in mei 2016, toen de afstand tussen Mars en de aarde heel klein was. Aangezien Hubble om de aarde draait, kon de ruimtetelescoop de vierde planeet van het zonnestelsel goed zien.
Medewerkers van NASA hebben de verschillende afbeeldingen niet alleen achter elkaar gezet, maar hebben tevens de beweging van Phobos zo vloeiend mogelijk gemaakt. Het resultaat is een fraaie video.
De verschijning van Phobos kwam voor wetenschappers als een verrassing. Ze waren van plan om alleen Mars te fotograferen, maar zagen toen plotseling het maantje opdoemen.
WIST JE DAT…
…Phobos de enige maan in het zonnestelsel is die sneller om zijn moederplaneet draait dan dat de moederplaneet om zijn as draait? Phobos doet 7 uur en 39 minuten over een rondje om de rode planeet, terwijl een dag op Mars 24 uur en 40 minuten duurt.
Tijdelijke maan Phobos is één van de kleinste maantjes in ons zonnestelsel. Het object lijkt op een rugbybal. De langste zijde heeft een lengte van 27 kilometer. Phobos is een ingevangen asteroïde. Dat betekent dat Mars het object naar zich toe heeft getrokken. Over ongeveer veertig miljoen jaar valt de maan waarschijnlijk uit elkaar, waardoor er een ring om de rode planeet ontstaat. Deze ring houdt ongeveer honderd miljoen jaar stand. Een oudere, alternatieve verklaring is dat Phobos over honderd miljoen jaar neerstort op de rode planeet.
Reusachtige krater Op de nieuwe Hubble-foto zijn niet veel details zichtbaar op Phobos. De maan is de afgelopen tientallen jaren door genoeg telescopen en ruimtevaartuigen gefotografeerd. Zo weten we dat de maan een gigantische krater heeft. Deze Stickney-krater heeft een diameter van negen kilometer en bestrijkt bijna de helft van de maan. Vorig jaar kwamen wetenschappers erachter hoe deze enorm krater kon ontstaan zonder dat Phobos compleet vernietigd werd.

Tot op heden is er nog geen contact geweest met een intelligente buitenaardse beschaving. Hoe komt dit? Misschien communiceren aliens wel anders dan wij.
In een nieuw paper presenteert wetenschapper Dr. Duncan H. Forgan van de St. Andrews Universiteit een interessant idee. Sommige onderzoekers denken dat buitenaardse beschavingen radiosignalen sturen, maar dit kost veel energie en daarnaast loopt een beschaving een risico. Radiosignalen zijn immers vrij makkelijk op te vangen door een onderontwikkelde beschaving, die vervolgens in het geheim een plan kan smeden om een planeet te veroveren. Als er zoiets bestaat als een ‘galactisch internet’, dan mogen alleen ver ontwikkelde beschavingen daar gebruik van maken.
Forgan denkt dat buitenaardse beschavingen hun eigen moederster gebruiken om te communiceren. Hoe? Dat komt zo. Laten we eerst een paar stappen terug doen…
Planeetovergangen Astronomen zoeken continu naar exoplaneten. Zij kijken dan o.a. naar dipjes in het licht van de ster. Neemt de helderheid van een ster periodiek af? Dan komt dit mogelijk door een planeet, die op dat moment voor de ster draait en een deel van het licht tegenhoudt. Stel, een buitenaardse beschaving kijkt naar de zon en zij zien iedere 365 aardse dagen een dip in helderheid, dan komt dit door de aarde die om de zon draait.
Megastructuren Forgan vermoedt dat intelligente aliens planeetovergangen ‘faken’. Deze beschavingen creëren hun eigen structuren om het licht van de ster tegen te houden. Dit gebeurt op onregelmatige momenten. Hierdoor vallen deze objecten direct op voor buitenaardse sterrenkijkers, net zoals bij KIC 8462852. Ze gebruiken deze planeetovergangen om te communiceren met andere beschavingen. “Zodra er een verbinding is tussen beschaving A en B, kunnen ze informatie uitwisselen”, schrijft Forgan in het paper. “Bijvoorbeeld middels (planeet)overgangen of elektromagnetische transmissies.” Misschien manipuleren aliens het spectrum van het licht om een boodschap te versturen.
Galactisch adressenboek Een voordeel aan dit systeem is dat niet iedere beschaving direct verbinding kan leggen. Pas wanneer wezens intelligent genoeg zijn, kunnen ze planeetovergangen zien en krijgen ze dus toegang tot het galactische netwerk. Als zo’n galactisch netwerk echt bestaat, dan vermoedt Forgan dat nieuwe leden direct een galactisch adressenboek ontvangen met daarin de coördinaten van de werelden van andere intelligente beschavingen. Dit is nuttig, want een nieuwe beschaving kan dan berichten doorgeven van aliens, die elkaar niet rechtstreeks kunnen bereiken.
Stroeve communicatie Er zijn natuurlijk ook nadelen. Buitenaardse beschavingen moeten wel op het juiste moment naar een ster kijken om een boodschap te lezen. Daarnaast gaan berichten zo langzaam heen en weer, dat de communicatie nogal stroef verloopt. Een beschaving kan natuurlijk wel continu zenden, maar ontvangen en reageren is een ander verhaal. Het is op dit moment onmogelijk om een bericht sneller dan het licht te verzenden. Als de afstand tussen twee intelligente beschavingen honderd jaar is, dan ontvangt een beschaving pas na 200 jaar een antwoord op een vraag.
Het blijft gissen Het is allemaal filosofie van de bovenste plank, maar het paper van Forgan zet ons wel weer aan het denken. Wetenschappers denken nog te vaak dat aliens op dezelfde manier communiceren als wij, maar misschien klopt hier niks van. We weten het pas zeker wanneer we daadwerkelijk buitenaards leven vinden, maar dat is nog niet gelukt. Lees hier waarom we tot op heden nog geen buitenaards leven hebben gevonden.

Toen astronomen de ster Ross 128 observeerden, vingen zij vreemde signalen op. Na een grondige analyse concluderen zij dat de mysterieuze signalen hoogstwaarschijnlijk afkomstig zijn van satellieten.
“We hebben de ster opnieuw geobserveerd met andere telescopen en hebben de bron van de Weird!-signalen gevonden”, schrijven de onderzoekers in een persbericht. “De beste verklaring voor de herkomst van de signalen is dat zij afkomstig zijn van één of meerdere geostationaire satellieten. Dit verklaart waarom de signalen binnen de frequentie van satellieten vielen en waarom de signalen alleen werden aangetroffen bij de dwergster Ross 128. Deze ster was namelijk te zien in een stuk hemel waar zich ook veel geostationaire satellieten bevinden. Het verklaart echter niet de spreiding van de signalen, maar dat komt mogelijk door verstoringen.”
De vreemde signalen zijn te zien in het rode kader. Weird!
Begin deze week kwamen astronomen al met drie mogelijke verklaringen. De signalen zouden veroorzaakt kunnen zijn door zonnevlammen op Ross 128, door een object dat tijdens de observaties van Ross 128 in het gezichtsveld verscheen of door satellieten. Uit het vervolgonderzoek blijkt dat de laatste verklaring het meest plausibel is.
Zijn de Weird!-signalen geen signalen van een buitenaardse beschaving? Die kans is klein, maar de onderzoekers sluiten het niet uit. Ze vroegen bijna 800 mensen – waaronder meer dan zestig astronomen – naar hun mening over de oorsprong van het signaal. Circa 250 mensen denken dat het signaal door aliens verzonden is. “Dit laat zien dat veel mensen nog steeds hoge verwachtingen hebben als het gaat om contact met een intelligente buitenaardse beschaving”, schrijven de wetenschappers. De meeste ondervraagden zien de mysterieuze signalen niet als een contactmoment met aliens.

ESPACE - Mi-juillet, des astronomes du radiotélescope d'Arecibo, un des plus puissants du monde, rapportaient dans une note de blog la découverte d'un signal "très étrange" venu de l'espace.
Cette onde radio semblait provenir de l'étoile qu'ils observaient, une naine rouge appelée Ross 128, située à moins de 11 années-lumière de la Terre. Une des plus proches du Soleil. Sauf qu'au vu de ses caractéristiques, il semblait impossible qu'elle émette de tels signaux. Les chercheurs avaient alors évoqué plusieurs hypothèses (et précisé que celle des extraterrestres était clairement la dernière d'une longue liste).
Pour en avoir le cœur net, les chercheurs ont donc "écouté" une nouvelle fois l'étoile. Ils ont été aidés par le télescope du Seti, un programme scientifique américain qui a pour but d'observer le ciel à la recherche d'un éventuel signal provenant d'une forme de vie extraterrestre.
Un signal artificiel, mais humain
Ce vendredi 21 juillet, Abel Mendez, l'un des auteurs de la première observation, a donné le résultat de ces analyses, de même que le Seti. Et la conclusion est décevante. Aucun signal spécifique n'a été entendu à nouveau en provenance de Ross 128.
Une explication possible serait donc que le signal soit d'origine terrestre. Ce ne serait pas la première fois qu'une émission radio étrange soit en réalité émise par un micro-onde défectueux dans la cuisine du laboratoire. Sauf que le signal bizarre n'a pas continué quand ils avaient observé d'autres étoiles immédiatement après, notait le chercheur à l'époque.
Au final, l'une des explications du Seti, la plus probable selon Abel Mendez, est que ce "signal bizarre" et bien artificiel, ne vienne pas de la Terre... Mais soit bien humain.
Il proviendrait en effet d'un de nos propres satellites. Ou même plusieurs. "Cela expliquerait pourquoi les signaux étaient dans les fréquences des satellites et sont seulement apparus pendant l'observation de Ross 128", précise-t-il. "Cette étoile est proche de l'équateur céleste, sur lequel beaucoup de satellites sont placés".
On peut voir sur le schéma ci-dessous que l'étoile est en effet entourée de nombreux objets humains tournant autour de la Terre à quelque 35.000 km d'altitude.

Quant à la nature bizarre du signal et sa dispersion, elle pourrait être due à de "multiples réflexions causées par ces distorsions", explique Abel Mendez.
Si ce faux positif est évidemment décevant, le chercheur veut positiver. "La morale ici, c'est que nous devons tous continuer d'explorer et de partager nos résultats de manière ouverte. Certaines personnes préfèrent uniquement apprendre des succès, mais d'autres préfèrent la science en temps réel, quel que soit le résultat final".
D'autres ne l'entendent effectivement pas de cette oreille. Plusieurschercheurs ont critiqué cette manière de communiquer sur des observations non-vérifiées et qui ne mènent pas à des résultats. Avant même que le fin mot de l'histoire soit dévoilé, la Société Française d'Astronomie et d'Astrophysique avait dénoncé "le piège de la communication outrancière d'un chercheur américain".

De Zwitserse schrijver Erich von Däniken is er nog altijd van overtuigd dat de goden buitenaardse wezens zijn. De Volkskrant sprak met hem.
De stelling van Von Däniken is als volgt: de wereld is bezaaid met onbegrepen archeologische objecten, grottekeningen en megabouwwerken die wijzen op bezoek van een buitenaardse beschaving aan onze voorouders.
Ooit begonnen onze goden als buitenaardse ruimtevaarders die op aarde arriveerden.

Toen Von Däniken op school de Bijbel las begon hij vragen te stellen aan zijn leraren en bibliotheken te bezoeken.
Hij ontdekte daar dat alle culturen van India en Peru tot Egypte soortgelijke verhalen hebben. Machines die met veel vuur uit de hemel komen, goden die rondvliegen.
Het kan geen toeval zijn dat alle oude volken het hebben over machines die uit de hemel neerdalen, aldus de schrijver.
Terug
Grottekeningen van mannetjes met iets wat een helm lijkt, een cabine, een stuurknuppel en een raketvlam.
Waar archeologen religieuze visioenen zien, ziet hij volkeren die de ontmoeting met een technisch geavanceerde cultuur proberen vast te leggen.
Ooit komen de buitenaardse goden weer terug, zegt Von Däniken. Of misschien zijn ze er al en bestuderen ze ons.
Graancirkels
Zo nu en dan proberen ze misschien al contact te maken via bijvoorbeeld graancirkels, die volgens de schrijver te ingewikkeld zijn om bedrog te kunnen zijn.
Von Däniken heeft 26 boeken geschreven, waarvan ongeveer 60 miljoen exemplaren zijn verkocht.
In zijn boeken stelt hij onder meer dat de evolutie van de mens in het verleden is gemanipuleerd door buitenaardse wezens.

Er zijn eigenlijk altijd wel vreemde dingen te zien voor mensen die goed naar boven kijken, maar de laatste tijd worden er steeds meer bijzondere dingen waargenomen.
Zoals een vreemde straal aan de hemel bij zonsopgang in België, terwijl diezelfde dag iets dergelijks ook wordt gezien bij een zonsopkomst in Mexico.
Op 18 juli 2017 neemt iemand uit België een foto van de zonsopkomst. Op zich wordt het een hele mooie foto, maar er is ook iets merkwaardigs op te zien.
Als je goed kijkt, dan zie je naast het gebouw rechts een soort vreemde straal in de lucht. Het is niet precies duidelijk wat het is, maar wel dat dit niet thuis hoort in een normale lucht.
Op dezelfde ochtend, maar dan aan de andere kant van de wereld, kijkt iemand uit het Canadese Vancouver naar de zonsopkomst op de Mexicaanse webcams.
En ook daar is iets bijzonders op te zien. Eveneens een soort straal, net zoals op de foto uit België, maar dan breder.
Wanneer je beide afbeeldingen naast elkaar zet, dan is het wat duidelijker te zien.
Overal ter wereld nemen mensen vreemde dingen in de lucht waar, zoals deze roodachtige lucht.
Of dingen zoals de volgende vreemde regenboog-achtige kleuren boven de wolken.
Vreemde kleuren en andere verschijnselen in de lucht, maar ook merken veel mensen dat het licht heel anders is en lijkt veel feller te zijn dan het was.
Langzaam maar zeker begint het tot een deel van de wereldbevolking door te dringen dat dingen niet meer zijn zoals ze altijd waren. Dat er soms subtiele veranderingen zijn waar te nemen zoals: de schaduw viel sinds een paar jaar, op dezelfde tijd van het jaar, op een andere plek.
Instinctief voelen velen dat het geen gewone tijden zijn en de vreemde gebeurtenissen die overal zijn waar te nemen, lijken dit te bevestigen.
In de volgende video neemt Skywatch Media News een aantal van deze zaken onder de loep, zoals de waarschuwingen van NASA en een vreemde planeet in ons zonnestelsel.

Verschillende objecten in de Street View-weergave van het ISS zijn aanklikbaar. Zo krijgt u beschrijvingen te zien van allerlei onderdelen van het ISS, zoals het systeem dat voor zuurstof zorgt, het Waste and Hygiene Compartment, oftewel het toilet, en de ruimtepakken.
Cupola Het meest spectaculair is het zicht vanuit de Cupola, de module met zes grote ramen die uitzicht bieden op de aarde. Daarnaast is het Sojoez-vaartuig te zien dat bevestigd is aan het ISS. De foto's zijn genomen toen een Dragon-capsule van Space X, Elon Musks bedrijf dat ooit mensen naar Mars wil brengen, het ISS aan het bevoorraden was; ook dat is zichtbaar.
Google heeft zijn Street View-dienst de afgelopen jaren uitgebreid met opvallende plekken op Aarde zoals het Great Barrier Reef en de bodem van oceanen, maar het is de eerste keer dat 360-gradenbeelden uit de ruimte zijn opgenomen. Hij had begin dit jaar al laten weten dat 2018 krap zou worden en nu heeft Elon Musk - de grote baas van het privéruimtevaartbedrijf SpaceX - laten weten dat de landing van zijn onbemande Dragoncapsule op Mars op een andere manier zal gebeuren dan gepland. Uit vrees dat die het anders niet zal overleven.
Musk deed de mededeling gisteren op de International Space Station Research and Development Conference. Hij wilde de Dragon oorspronkelijk uitrusten met stuwraketten voor een 'propulsieve' landing, maar hij vreest dat het te veel werk zal vragen om die ook veilig genoeg te maken voor een bemande missie naar de rode planeet, het ultieme doel van zijn bedrijf. "Het was een moeilijke beslissing", gaf Musk toe.
Groter Maar even later liet hij via Twitter weten dat hij wel al andere plannen heeft. Zonder te veel details te geven. "We gaan zeker en vast nog op deze manier landen op Mars, maar met een groter ruimteschip dan het huidige. En daarvoor zal de volgende generatie toestellen van SpaceX perfect geschikt zijn."
De landing van de Dragon zal nu vermoedelijk gebeuren met een parachute. De stuwraketten blijven ook aan boord mocht er een noodlanding nodig zijn.
Musk heeft altijd gezegd dat mensen naar Mars brengen het ultieme doel is van SpaceX. "Als we de kost van een verhuis naar de rode planeet gelijk kunnen maken aan de prijs van een gemiddeld huis in de Verenigde Staten - ongeveer 170.000 euro - denk ik dat de kans heel groot is dat we daar een zelfredzame kolonie kunnen stichten", aldus de miljardair.
Kolonie Hij zou daarvoor minstens 1.000 ruimteschepen in een baan rond de aarde willen brengen met herbruikbare stuwraketten. Die zouden dan terugkeren naar de aarde om brandstof te halen voor de schepen. Daarna zou er een 100-tal mensen per schip aan boord kunnen gaan met al hun bagage en materiaal om er een kolonie uit te bouwen. Daar aangekomen zouden de ruimteschepen uitgeladen worden en nieuwe brandstof krijgen, waarna ze naar de aarde zouden terugkeren voor een nieuwe lading. "Op die manier zouden we in 40 tot 100 jaar tijd een goed draaiende kolonie kunnen hebben."

In 2015 zond het NASA-ruimteschip New Horizon de eerste close-upbeelden ooit uit van Pluto en zijn manen. Met data van het schip en digitale beelden van Pluto en maan Charon hebben wetenschappers vluchtbeelden gemaakt over verschillende terreinen, waaronder bergketens en ijsvlaktes.

NASA has finally gotten a peek of an ancient and elusive Kuiper belt object. NASA has found a concerning object that a New Horizons spacecraft will likely visit next.
Reports say at least 24 mobile telescopes placed in the remote regions of Chubut and Santa Cruz, Argentina helped to capture the 200 milliseconds of the Kuiper Belt object that passed in front of a distant and unnamed star. This brief encounter showed the Kuiper Belt obfuscating its light, in the wake of July 17.
Scientists have been waiting for this brief moment for months, and some don't know exactly what they could have gotten from such a short glimpse of information. This was the third attempt at "occultation," blocking the light from stars that were nearby as it captured the shadow of an object moving in front of a background star.
Scientists at NASA believe that this can reveal important information about the objects shape, size, orbit and surrounding environment. Scientists say this will be crucial for the planning of the upcoming flyby mission.
It is known as 2014 MU69, after the year in which the object was first discovered. The Kuiper Belt object lies in our solar system, more than four billion miles away. The objects distance and faint brightness made it hard for scientists to figure out what this all meant. The object at the time remained a mystery.
However, scientists were able to learn that the object is known as a cold classical object. While avoiding external disturbances and collisions, scientists expect the object to reveal insights about the formation of the solar system. Monday became the third and most successful out of the three occultation campaigns. It helped contribute to answering some of the questions the scientists have had ahead of the New Horizons spacecraft flyby which is scheduled for January 1, 2019.
"It was the most historic occultation on the face of the earth," said Jim Green, NASA's director of planetary science in a congratulatory call to the team, as the space agency reported in a statement. "You pulled it off, and you made it happen." NASA scientists also received support from the local community, including Argentinian scientists, government officials and of course citizens.
A major highway was closed off for two hours to try and avoid disturbance from car headlights. Street lights were turned off, and telescopes that were placed in people's backyards and trucks were parked perfectly to help serve as wind breaks. Marc Buie of the Southwest Research Institution led the 60-people team of observers, who will reportedly study data that was obtained during the occultations to plan the upcoming flyby.
The New Horizons spacecraft has already completed a very successful flyby mission to Pluto in 2015. Located a billion miles farther from our sun Pluto, 2014 MU69 is predicted to be the farthest object ever encountered by any spacecraft. "Spacecraft flybys are unforgiving." Alan Stern said in May ahead of the occultations, "The occultations help us plan for a unique flyby of a scientifically important relic of the solar system's era of formation.

The new science fiction film epic "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is based on the TV series and comic both put out in France. To look at the trailer for this film which is now streaming online, this looks like amazing scenes of beauty and great special effects.
VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS MOVIE REVIEW
There is a great scene of diverting a beast in a vast dessert, and a city underwater just to name a few of the special effects used here. In short, Valerian has the honor of being the most expensive independently made film ever produced.
Sounds great doesn't it, the trailer certainly looks great. There is just one issue at a closer glance could Valerian be yet another in a string of films that were more about visual effects and captivating an audience with them than an actual story that also grabs in viewers.
Alright, so what is the basis for the story in the movie "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets"? It is on a planet known as Mui where apparently a race of alien beings with shimmering skin live. Life on Muli seems quite content, these aliens live in harmony and have their types of pets. Little creatures are known as Mul converters that somewhat resemble cute little goblins. These creatures aren't just essential as companionship but as survival, turns out they secrete something that closely resembles a pearl that this species of aliens depends on to survive. So disaster hits when another alien race attacks the planet and destroys it with only a certain amount of the citizens of Mul managing to escape. There is just one problem; they were unable to save any of the creatures needed for their survival.
This is where the main protagonist of the film Major Valerian comes in at, he along with Sgt Laureline is assigned to find the last known surviving Mul converter that goes by the name of Melo. The two leave in a ship that looks a whole lot like the Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars films. But this isn't Star Wars that had the great epic good versus evil story. No, this is guy and girl humanoid alien species go off to find little creature movie. Most of the film is now devoted to these two on the quest of finding the creature. Of course along the way they take the time to fall in love and obsess more about finding the creature. But as perhaps the film makers intended the viewers are too wrapped up noticing the amazing visual CGI effects that they aren't bothering to notice the plot isn't that good.
So, instead of saying the next Star Wars or the next even Star Trek film, Valerian falls more into say the category of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Yes, the latter is remembered quite fondly in pop culture, but take away the amazing visual effects even for that time along with the great musical score and explain the plot? For some of us that require Wikipedia to do so, which isn't a good thing. So, Valerian is perhaps another one of these films visually gorgeous, but if you take all that away, you are left with a plot that maybe isn't much to talk about other than a generic love story or lost pet film.

New Zealand astronomers have used new scientific techniques to revise the number of possible Earth-like planets in our galaxy. The University of Auckland now provides an estimate of around 100 billion possibly habitable planets.
ASTRONOMERS ESTIMATE 100 BILLION HABITABLE EARTH-LIKE PLANETS IN THE MILKY WAY, 50 SEXTILLION IN THE UNIVERSE
The previous hypothesis was closer to 17 billion, a substantial difference. Using this new data and considering the nearly 500 billion galaxies in the universe leads to a staggering possibility- something like 50 sextillion planets that could contain life as we know it.
The process employed to estimate the new numbers is called gravitational microlensing. It is currently being used at Mt. John Observatory by a team of New Zealand, and Japanese scientists called MOA. Gravitational microlensing’s ability to detect objects under extremely low or no light conditions makes it a more exact tool when compared to apparent magnitude, the previously used technique.
Apparent magnitude involved measuring the dimming of stars as planets pass between them and the earth. Though used by such institutions as the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Kepler Space Observatory, apparent magnitude had some major disadvantages.
GRAVITATIONAL MICROLENSING UNLOCKS THE SECRET OF ALIEN LIFE
“Kepler finds Earth-sized planets that are quite close to parent stars, ” said Dr. Phil Yock, a representative of the university’s physics department. “These planets are hotter than Earth.” Scientists have long been skeptical of the possibility of life on such planets that fall too close to their suns. The circumstellar habitable zone often called the Goldilocks zone, is considered a more likely place for extraterrestrial life as it contains the not too hot, not too cold conditions to support liquid water.
In contrast, gravitational microlensing considers not the dimming of stars but the distortions of quasars, caused by the gravities of objects that move in front of them. Quasars emit electromagnetic radiation and are observable by radio, infrared, telescope, ultraviolet, and x-ray. When an object of sufficient gravity passes between a quasar and the earth, the warping of that object's gravity causes a magnification of the quasar’s radiation.
Dr. Yock wants to combine this new data with that previously investigated by apparent magnitude. “Our proposal is to measure the number of Earth-mass planets orbiting stars at distances typically twice the Sun-Earth distance. Our planets will, therefore, be cooler than the Earth. By interpolating. We should get a good estimate of the number of Earth-like, habitable planets in the galaxy.”
New Zealand’s extreme southern position gives it a unique view of the sky while its relatively low population, abundance of rural land and low levels of light pollution make it an excellent place for astral observation. It is one of only three countries to have an official Gold Rated International Dark Sky Reserve. It is considered one of the best stargazing locations on earth.

Thanks to the onboard cameras at the International Space Station, UFO hunters have--apparently--spotted hundreds of unidentified flying objects near the space station, and even entering and leaving our planet.
NASA rarely comments on the alleged videos which have become more and more popular in recent years.
There are things out there that no one can explain. One such example is the video we share here.
UFO hunters spotted an unidentified flying object captured on video by NASA’s space cameras.
In the 'otherworldly' video footage, a strange object–with a peculiar disk-shaped design—seems to be leaving Earth’s atmosphere. So what was it? Is it an actual Alien vehicle? Is it just Space Debris? Perhaps an optical Illusion, or just the good ol' Swamp Gas?
Many users are convinced that this video is the ultimate evidence Earth is visited by Alien beings while others remain skeptical and still, unconvinced, saying that it's just a reflection or ice particles near the ISS floating away. But, come on guys, surely Ice Particles don't float off like that, do they?
And while we debate whether or not this is an actual alien vehicle spotted by NASA cameras, many scientists, former Astronauts, and military officials are convinced, even without seeing this video, that our planet has been visited by beings not from Earth for centuries.

Mesmerizing Sky - Rare Double Sunset over North Carolina
A double sunset is a rare astro-geographical phenomenon, in which the sun sets twice on the same evening from a specific place.
The first published mention of a double sunset which occurred in Leek was made in 1686 by Dr Robert Plot in his book The Natural History of Stafford-shire.
The spectacle was last reliably witnessed, and filmed, from the churchyard belonging to the parish church of St Edward the Confessor in 1977.
Historically, it appears that a double sunset is very rare, so we may wonder what is going on because people around the world are currently witnessing double sunsets.
That the phenomenon is not an illusion proves the last double sunset which was spotted from North Carolina as Brian witnessed a bright East and West horizons after sunset on July 15, 2017 as you can see the below video.
MYSTERY surrounds a possible UFO sighting photographed by people on the northern beaches this month.
Narrabeen’s Gus Medero captured a close-up shot of the bizarre object and he was one of several witnesses at a loss to explain it.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has also described the object as “a mystery”.
Mr Medero was taking sunrise photos at Avalon’s Bangalley Head on July 5, about 7am, when his camera also captured a large white dot in the sky above the sun.
Gus Medero can take a mean UFO photo.
Medero said the unidentified object looked to have “four jet streams coming out” of it.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Mr Medero said.
“I can’t really give you a definitive answer (on what it was).”

Mr Medero said the object — which was moving in upwards — was most likely a satellite, if he had to guess.
Cromer’s Blake Hirst also took photographs of the object, from Dee Why Beach.
He, along with others at the beach at the time, said he noticed the object move from one side of the rising sun to the other before it disappeared upwards into the atmosphere.
“It’s the strangest thing I’ve ever seen,” he said.

“I’m not one to believe in UFOs or ghosts or anything like that but it makes you wonder. Some guy made a joke that it was the North Koreans sending a missile.”
Asked if he thought it could have been a drone or a plane, Mr Hirst said: “The way it took off and shot up to space, it could have been a drone ... but I don’t know.
“It seemed it was going way too fast to be a drone — it was going faster than an aeroplane.”
Mr Hirst said it looked like lights were “flashing on and off” from the object.

Belrose woman Bernice Camf also saw the object from her home and believed it was “space junk”.
A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority viewed photos of the object and said it was a mystery as to what it was.
“At that time of the morning the light often makes things look different than they are,” he said.

UFO hunters are convinced they have found solid evidence of alien life over Cornwall as dozens of locals reported seeing a strange translucent, shimmering craft in the sky.
Over the past week, residents of Cornwall have reported seeing a strange shimmering object in the sky which some believe is proof that extraterrestrials are visiting.
The odd phenomenon was first spotted on Monday by surfer Kiefer Krishnan, who caught it on his Go-Pro camera, and uploaded it to Instagram with the caption: “Looking through the GoPro footage and found the Strangest sighting at the end of the vid.”
Since then, a flurry of videos were uploaded to social media sites, all of which were spotted in different locations across the southwestern tip of England.
Harry Wild wrote on Twitter: “Odd sighting at #Fistral today. Anyone else see it? #ufocornwall”.
He asked: “What the?! Is this an alien spacecraft over the A30?”
Another Instagram user from Kent, who posted footage over Roche Rock, St Austell, said: "What on Earth is this in the sky? It looks like some kind of craft to me, has anyone else seen this?”
Numerous other sightings have emerged of the bizarre 0UFO, leaving residents baffled.
Some have speculated that it could be a flock of birds or insects, but as it has a similar shape over several days and in the same locations, experts say this is unlikely.
Others, however, theorise that it could be a publicity stunt from the Eden Project, which is set to open its new Journey Into Space attraction on July 27.
A spokesperson for the Eden Project told Cornwall Live: "It's true we have a galaxy of ways to tell the story of space at Eden this summer. To coin a phrase… 'The truth is out there'."

Yet, Mr Glockner today stood by his outlandish "cube" video and a follow-up that claimed the event actually happened, saying it was all "real".
The video entitled '[MIND-BOGGLING] Black Portal & Alien Cube UFO Over Texas' has been branded poorly made, photoshopped and fake by a series of UFO debunkers, some of who have placed Mr Glockner on UFO website and YouTube channel blacklists for his alleged crimes against ufology.
The video first emerged in June 2015 and claimed a "terrifying black cube was snapped over El Paso on the Texas border" just a few miles from White Sands – the infamous US military testing site where the world’s first Atomic bomb was detonated.
It has been viewed more than a staggering 3.6 million times.

This 'UFO cube' was faked, claim debunkers, but Tyler Glockner insists it was real.
The clip was looked at by the US-based Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), which is the world's largest organisation dedicated to UFO and alien research.
Fletcher Gray, lead MUFON investigator in Texas, said at the time: "If you blow the thing up, you can see too many pixels."
Various debunkers claim some YouTube channels such as Secureteam10 use outrageous claims and footage to attract maximum views and benefit from advertising revenue from YouTube.
Debunking website UFO Theatre estimated in April that Secureteam10 could pull in as much as £230,000 a year from advertising, but he was at risk of losing it die to changes in YouTube policy.
Mr Glockner, who today had nearly one million (958,228) subscribers to his channel, maintains he is just a genuine UFO researcher trying to "get the truth out there."

Tyler Glockner has an army of UFO buff followers on YouTube.
But aside from the shocking cube claim, his videos have included ridiculous allegations including:
*That video of a Hayabusa capsule re-entry from 2010 was recent "leaked" footage of an “alien satellite shot down by the Illuminati”.
*There are towers built on the moon
*That time lapse video of a helicopter was alien technology being tested over France
*Humans have lived on Mars for many years and Google's April Fool's day images of a space station on the Red Planet may actually be real
A new attack comes from YouTube's TheOutThereChannel which has a video exposing how Mr Glockner apparently distorted his own voice to give the impression he had spoken to an alleged NASA and NSA source Dr Eric Norton.
In the Secureteam10 video entitled 'Nasa whistleblower reveals about L-shaped ships on the far side of the moon', 'Dr Norton' discussed the craft being on the lunar surface.
TheOutThereChannel used software to strip back Dr Norton's voice, to reveal it was in fact Mr Glockner's.
In an earlier attack by YouTube channel Dazzathecameraman, the debunker analysed an outlandish claim made in a Secureteam10 video entitled 'Leaked? Giant body behind Saturn Entering Solar System - cover up'.
The video made the far-fetched claim that a massive unknown planet had been filmed entering our solar system behind the ringed planet, but it was being withheld from the public.

The video played what it said was a recording of a source - an astronomer from the W M Keck Observatory on Maunakea in Hawaii, called only Ken, who supposedly work led for a government agency.
He spoke over an alleged genuine image showing a large plant behind what appeared to be Saturn.
Express.co.uk had an exclusive Twitter exchange with Mr Glockner, after putting these claims to him.
He denied being responsible for hoaxing any material himself, but accepted he may have inadvertently shown other people's hoaxes in the past.
He said: "I don't 'hoax' anything.
"Have hoaxes made their way onto my channel in the past? Sure, but that's the game.
"I've sharpened my eye a lot since then, and I know what to look for."
After being met with claims the original cube video was digitally created, he posted a follow up with an unidentified female witness to the event.
He added: "I'm extremely careful, and the Texas cube was most certainly real, as was the interview I did with the woman who witnessed it."
He then turned to the claims that his own voice has been digitised to sound like sources speaking off camera in his videos.
He said: "I admitted in the VERY video that I recreated the voice audio for Ken, who WAS a real person, but didn't want their voice out there.
"I admitted this in the description of that video the day I posted it, so I find it hilarious that all of these haters have left that little detail out of their stories."
Whereas some UFO YouTubers who have come under fire have claimed it was CIA trolls out top discredit their work, Mr Glockner claimed jealousy from rivals was responsible.
He said: "I run the biggest channel in ufology with nothing but love from millions of fans.
"Everyone has a few haters, and that's fine. I pay no attention.
"I run this channel and I do my best to filter out the nonsense.
"Trolls constantly attack me as being a 'hoaxer', and yet anyone can go through the videos I post on day to day and see that's completely UNTRUE."
He said other YouTube channels that used "blatant CGI fakes" were getting less flack, adding: "I'm getting attacked for something that I posted back when I very first started the channel, and that wasn't even a hoax?
"Like I said, these guys just want to hate on the big guy, and that's me.
"My work stands for itself, and one or two crappy videos out of hundreds does not define me or the hard work I've done for this research. End of story."
Scott Brando runs debunking website ufoofinterest.org.
He told Express.co.uk: "We know that the UFO cube was a fake, not CGI but a bad image photoshopped.
"We don't know who was the witness who sent the picture to Secureteam10."
He said he was convinced the witness was also hoaxed after "it emerged the original image had been digitally created."
He added that Mr Glockner's admission about creating witness voices with his own, mean he could not be trusted with "what he said about sources."
