Why Looking for Aliens Is Good for Society (Even If There Aren't Any)
Why Looking for Aliens Is Good for Society (Even If There Aren't Any)
By Ian Crawford Visiting Research Associate in Astronomy, UCL
The search for life elsewhere in the universe is one of the most compelling aspects of modern science. Given its scientific importance, significant resources are devoted to this young science of astrobiology, ranging from rovers on Mars to telescopic observations of planets orbiting other stars.
The holy grail of all this activity would be the actual discovery of alien life, and such a discovery would likely have profound scientific and philosophical implications. But extraterrestrial life has not yet been discovered, and for all we know may not even exist. Fortunately, even if alien life is never discovered, all is not lost: simply searching for it will yield valuable benefits for society.
Why is this the case?
First, astrobiology is inherently multidisciplinary. To search for aliens requires a grasp of, at least, astronomy, biology, geology, and planetary science. Undergraduate courses in astrobiology need to cover elements of all these different disciplines, and postgraduate and postdoctoral astrobiology researchers likewise need to be familiar with most or all of them.
By forcing multiple scientific disciplines to interact, astrobiology is stimulating a partial reunification of the sciences. It is helping to move 21st-century science away from the extreme specialisation of today and back towards the more interdisciplinary outlook that prevailed in earlier times.
By producing broadminded scientists, familiar with multiple aspects of the natural world, the study of astrobiology therefore enriches the whole scientific enterprise. It is from this cross-fertilization of ideas that future discoveries may be expected, and such discoveries will comprise a permanent legacy of astrobiology, even if they do not include the discovery of alien life.
It is also important to recognise that astrobiology is an incredibly open-ended endeavour. Searching for life in the universe takes us from extreme environments on Earth, to the plains and sub-surface of Mars, the icy satellites of the giant planets, and on to the all-but-infinite variety of planets orbiting other stars. And this search will continue regardless of whether life is actually discovered in any of these environments or not. The range of entirely novel environments opened to investigation will be essentially limitless, and so has the potential to be a never-ending source of scientific and intellectual stimulation.
The cosmic perspective
Beyond the more narrowly intellectual benefits of astrobiology are a range of wider societal benefits. These arise from the kinds of perspectives – cosmic in scale – that the study of astrobiology naturally promotes.
It is simply not possible to consider searching for life on Mars, or on a planet orbiting a distant star, without moving away from the narrow Earth-centric perspectives that dominate the social and political lives of most people most of the time. Today, the Earth is faced with global challenges that can only be met by increased international cooperation. Yet around the world, nationalistic and religious ideologies are acting to fragment humanity. At such a time, the growth of a unifying cosmic perspective is potentially of enormous importance.
In the early years of the space age, the then US ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson, said of the world: "We can never again be a squabbling band of nations before the awful majesty of outer space." Unfortunately, this perspective is yet to sink deeply into the popular consciousness. On the other hand, the wide public interest in the search for life elsewhere means that astrobiology can act as a powerful educational vehicle for the popularisation of this perspective.
Indeed, it is only by sending spacecraft out to explore the solar system, in large part for astrobiological purposes, that we can obtain images of our own planet that show it in its true cosmic setting.
In addition, astrobiology provides an important evolutionary perspective on human affairs. It demands a sense of deep, or big, history. Because of this, many undergraduate astrobiology courses begin with an overview of the history of the universe. This begins with the Big Bang and moves successively through the origin of the chemical elements, the evolution of stars, galaxies, and planetary systems, the origin of life, and evolutionary history from the first cells to complex animals such as ourselves. Deep history like this helps us locate human affairs in the vastness of time, and therefore complements the cosmic perspective provided by space exploration.
Political implications
There is a well-known aphorism, widely attributed to the Prussian naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, to the effect that "the most dangerous worldview is the worldview of those who have not viewed the world". Humboldt was presumably thinking about the mind-broadening potential of international travel. But familiarity with the cosmic and evolutionary perspectives provided by astrobiology, powerfully reinforced by actual views of the Earth from space, can surely also act to broaden minds in such a way as to make the world less fragmented and dangerous.
I think there is an important political implication inherent in this perspective: as an intelligent technological species, that now dominates the only known inhabited planet in the universe, humanity has a responsibility to develop international social and political institutions appropriate to managing the situation in which we find ourselves.
In concluding his monumental Outline of History in 1925, HG Wells famously observed: "Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe." Such an observation appears especially germane to the geopolitical situation today, where apparently irrational decisions, often made by governments (and indeed by entire populations) seemingly ignorant of broader perspectives, may indeed lead our planet to catastrophe.
Last year, extraterrestrial exploration venture Breakthrough Initiatives announced an ambitious plan to send tonnes of tiny spacecraft to our nearest neighbouring star system, Alpha Centauri. The project, called Breakthrough Starshot, is focused on launching lightweight ‘nanocraft’ to the stars at rip-roaring speeds. Recently, the project took a big leap toward achieving its ultimate goal by successfully sending six test craft into Low Earth Orbit.
The tiny spacecraft, called “Sprites,” are just 3.5 centimetres on each side and weigh about four grams. Aerospace engineer Zac Manchester, who is leading the design on the Sprites, has been working on them for the last 10 years.
“What we’ve set out to do from the beginning is push the size limits of spacecraft,” Manchester told Gizmodo. “The question was how small can we make a satellite and still make it do something useful. One of the challenges is how can you get enough power, and given the tiny power you can harvest, how do you communicate back to Earth?”
Manchester and his fellow researchers hope that eventually, mini spacecraft similar to the Sprites—called StarChips—will be able to travel at 20% the speed of light, which translates to about 37,000 miles per second. It would take a spacecraft travelling at this speed less than seven seconds to reach the Moon from Earth, according to Sky and Telescope.
Those are speeds and distances no spacecraft of any size has gone before. Currently, the farthest spacecraft ever built is NASA’s Voyager 1, which launched in 1977, and only just reached Interstellar space a few years back.
For now, the Sprites are chillin’ in Low Earth Orbit. They launched on June 23rd on an Indian rocket called the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). Breakthrough Starshot anticipates that a second satellite will release more soon.
Obviously, much more work needs to be done before we get our hopes up about an interstellar voyage. But for astrobiology nerds and tinfoil hat believers alike, the Sprites’ successful launch could be an important step toward finding life beyond Earth.
“The distances are immense and it’s a big challenge,” Manchester added. “We’re a long way out to the eventual goals [of Breakthrough Starshot], but we’re setting the early precedent here.”

A telescope that may be humanity’s best hope of finding extraterrestrial life was switched on yesterday by John Halligan, a government minister who has said he believes aliens exist.
The International Low-Frequency Array (I-Lofar) telescope is a €150 million network of antennas across Europe that hopes to pick up signals from outer space, detect new planets, uncover the mysteries of black holes and the origins of galaxies.
Mr Halligan, the minister for training and skills, switched on the Irish Lofar telescope, which is the size of a football pitch, at Birr Castle, Co Offaly. yesterday. “Our galaxy is 100,000 light years across with a billion suns and two billion planets. It would be extraordinary if there was not some form of life,” he said. “I think it’s inevitable that it is out there and today’s launch will certainly help.”
Mr Halligan, who describes himself as a humanist, has sent out alien-themed Christmas cards in the past and has a longstanding belief in extraterrestrial life. He said described the project as fascinating and said it could lead to many practical uses on earth.
“Everything from improved planes to satellite mapping of global warming have come from our exploration of space, and this holds many new possibilities,” he said.
The Lofar radio telescope will be able to pick up accidental signals from any intelligent life that is using radio in space, according to Paul Gilster, a space exploration analyst.
“The search for extraterrestrial intelligence has generally looked for targeted signals sent deliberately our way but scientists are also considering the possibility of accidental receptions, the markers of an industrial society at work,” Mr Gilster said.
“Lofar opens up a new frequency domain for the search for life. With its omnidirectional antennas and computing resources, it may help us pin down the sources of transient radio signals that could be faint signals from cultures around distant stars.”
The telescope will also study radio signals from hydrogen that may uncover the mysteries of how the universe moved from its “dark ages” after the big bang to the creation of galaxies.
Researchers also hope its ultra-sensitive radio detection will tell us more about black holes and uncover planets in the Milky Way and in other galaxies. The chain of 12 telescopes is shared between countries including the Netherlands, the UK, Poland and Germany.
Ireland will pay €420,000 up front and €90,000 a year to be part of the project. The money will be paid first to Trinity College, and then to Lofar co-ordinators in the Netherlands. University College Dublin, Dublin City University, the Armagh Observatory and the NUI Galway are all involved in the project.
The facility at Birr Castle has been built next to the historic Leviathan telescope, which was built by the third Earl of Rosse in 1845 and was the largest optical telescope in the world until 1917.
Twenty frightened Townsville residents have reporting seeing unidentified flying objects over the past 20 years.
Evidence collected by UFO Research Queensland details the terrifying encounters.
Researcher Sheryl Gottschall is documenting the history of sightings of UFOs and would like to hear from anyone who may have had a personal UFO sighting, past or current, or know of such reports from their local area.
Ms Gottschall said the database included historical and new sightings.
She said the database was part of an attempt to gather a collection of reports from the public.
“We find that when people report through social media they don’t put much detail into it.
“The idea is for us to have a searchable database so the public, who are looking for similar accounts like their own, can use it.”
If you’ve seen a UFO, call Ms Gottschall on 3376 1780.
“If people have close encounters they can call us and we record their experiences,” she said.

Recorded UFO sightings
Townsville, Wednesday about July 10, 1999, 1.30am
A woman who lives near the Ross River observed a star coming over the top of a nearby mountain.
It vanished, then reappeared and started to get brighter and closer.
It had a spotlight beaming from it to the ground and she had the impression it was spying on the nearby army base.
She heard no noise as the object started bouncing in the sky very fast, then hovering and flying.
She became very frightened, went inside, turned off the lights and locked the door.
She watched it for a couple of hours.
She later rang the army base to see if they had something in the air at the time, which there wasn’t.
Townsville, Sunday May 19, 2002, 12.50am
A woman reported seeing a grey, boomerang-shaped object moving silently and not as fast as a plane.
There were no lights on it and it made no noise.
It was travelling at the speed of an ultralight and in a straight line.
She thought it might have been a hang-glider but it was going too fast.
She said she could see the structure of the object and even the welding.
When asked how she saw this object in the sky at 12.50am, she said it was a very light night.
Townsville, Saturday December 10, 2005, night
Just a few minutes ago I saw something suspicious in the sky.
It probably was a plane, but it was an object in the sky with three lights, normal white lights, moving faster than a plane, and I could see the shape of the object.
It was like a triangle without pointed sides.
They were curved and planes don’t seem to fly the way it was travelling.
My father saw it but he said it was a plane and one of my next door neighbours was outside too.
I don’t know if they looked up at the sky but they were around when I saw it.
Just wondering if what I saw is or was a UFO of some sort?

Townsville, Saturday April 19, 2009, 3.40am
I was outside on my back deck here in Townsville having a cigarette and looking at the stars when I noticed a very huge object that blended in with the colour of the sky, which was dark grey.
This object appeared to be a V shape and was just gliding very slowly, lower than plane height, and it had rows of very dim grey blue-coloured lights around the V shape.
The time was 3.40am. I watched for about 50 seconds before it disappeared behind some trees. It had no noise associated with it.
I waited for about five more minutes but did not see it again, however I did see a small light aircraft coming in low to the airport and could hear that easily.
Townsville, QLD, August 2, 2009, 2am
A family was sitting around a camp fire when directly above the group appeared three disks.
One took off at great speed and two moved in a different direction but stayed in view.
The third went in the opposite direction to the first leaving a white trail.
The witness has had a number of sightings.
The witness was indigenous to Australia and was waiting to be admitted to train in healing work.

Townsville, November 1 2009, 8.50pm
At around 8.50pm I took my daughter into the backyard and while looking up in the sky I saw what at first I thought was just a bright star, but then I saw it was moving.
This object was initially slow and I think it was not a satellite, as most of the satellites I have seen are between 6 and 8pm and are not very bright.
This thing was like a big star. It was travelling from the west towards the east, and then it started moving very fast towards the south.
I would say I saw this thing flying for about four or five minutes.
Townsville, January-February 2012
I quite enjoy investigating strange sightings in my spare time in North Queensland.
Recently I have received reports of a strange flying creature in Townsville. About a month ago two separate people witnessed a flying object in the sky at night.
They described the object to look somewhat like a bat, with batlike wings but the body of a man. The object was very dark.
Without looking into this further, this sighting seems quite similar to the Mothman sightings of West Virginia USA that are now UFO folk law.
Possibly a couple of people with an excessive imagination? Perhaps, however my investigation on this is still ongoing.
Whether it be in the north Queensland area or Australia wide. This is not the first sighting report of a “flying man” received from North Queensland.
Townsville, Friday September 14 2001, 10.15pm
The witness was driving in a car when she observed an orange light travelling very slowly from north to south. It seemed to have two red lights underneath it.
Townsville, February 1 2003, reported December 2008
After sighting a UFO in 2000, a strange orange light following a car I have been actively looking out for UFOs.
In Townsville at roughly 9.15pm after coming back from a jog, I was doing some stretches on my second story unit balcony.
As I was glancing up I sighted three white lights in a triangular formation that looked quite high up.
They were spaced quite far apart, easily far enough to be three separate objects.
They were travelling quite fast — it took roughly seven seconds for them to travel from directly above me to the horizon.
I could tell they were quite high, as they travelled above clouds. They were silent, with no smoke or vapour trail. The lights were about the same size as a satellite, yet they were about two or three times as bright.
A UFO sighting.
Townsville, August 31, 2011
I took three pictures that caught my eye while taking photos of the sun with my iPod 10 minutes ago.
In the top left hand quarter above the sun there is a white thing.
It shouldn’t be there what ever it is.
The first photo I noticed it then the 2nd it had slightly moved then the third it was streaking away. I didn’t move the iPod, I just kept pressing till I got about 10 shots.
I live in Kirwan, a suburb of Townsville, not far from the RAAF base. I am a current serving RAAF airman.
This is the 3rd UFO I’ve seen in my three years in Townsville, but the only one caught on camera.
Townsville, August 14 2010, 11pm
I’d like to report a strange light I witnessed over Townsville in mid-August. I was standing in my backyard in Oonoonba, having a cigarette, at around 11pm.
I glanced up into the sky and noticed an orange fireball about half the size of a full moon, which seemed to be stationary. I speculated that it must have been a military jet with afterburners lit, travelling directly away from me.
However it seemed to stay in the one place far too long. It was hard to gauge at what altitude this “fireball” was, other than to say it was below the upper-level cloud. It remained stationary for approximately 30 seconds, then suddenly seemed to gain height at an extraordinary rate.
Townsville, April 30, 2011, 9pm
I would like to report a sighting that occurred on 30 April 2011 at about 9pm in Townsville. The object was witnessed by my wife and myself.
I am a soldier in the Australian Army.
I saw what I first believed to be a shooting star. I initially noticed it nearly directly above my head and watched it travel in a Westerly direction away from me. I watched it move down towards the horizon for about half a second, at which point it seemed to explode like fireworks. It was very bright, maybe 5-10 times brighter than the brightest star in the sky.
I asked my wife if she had seen the shooting star and I was disappointed that she had not as it was very spectacular. I commented that it was very unusual as I have never seen a shooting star so bright.
I am an infantryman who has served about nine years and have spent many nights in the bush on training and operations. I have seen hundreds of shooting stars, many are picked up with night vision goggles that would not normally be seen by the naked eye, and I have never seen so bright a light. I was also excited as I had never seen a shooting star explode like a firework.
Townsville, April 26 2008, 4.30pm
On the 26th of April 2008 my mother and two brothers saw what they thought to be a man flying in the air, in broad daylight at 4.30pm in the afternoon against a cloudless sky and about 800 — 1000 metres away.
One of my brothers is an ex paratrooper in the Australian Army and he described the flying man as being about six to seven feet in height, and he was floating in a standing upright position. The man seemed to be moving his head and looking around, and when he turned towards Hervey’s Range, you could see his whole anatomy and it was a man.
Townsville, 1999 [reported October 12 2001]
Two years previously a man was travelling in a sleeping cabin on a train when he had a UFO sighting. He saw two objects together near Bowen heading in a straight line.
The two objects joined and there was an explosion like a star burst.
Townsville, 1970s [reported September 2004]
I would like to tell you about something that happened to my family and I back in the late 1970s.
It’s a tale I don’t normally speak about but I decided to take a chance and tell it to you.
My parents and I had a beach house about thirty minutes drive north of Townsville in north Queensland at a place called Toomula, a small beachside community. It was a Friday night and we were going fishing on the Saturday over at an island about thirteen or so miles off the coast called Rattlesnake, an island used for target practice at one time by the RAAF, so we needed to get some bait.
We were down at the mouth of Saltwater Creek, which also gave the small settlement its more commonly used name of Saltwater Beach, and my father was casting for bait when I noticed a bright light up in the sky that was reflecting strongly in the water.
Baffled by the light I drew it to the attention of my parents and grandfather, who was also with us. My father had a large torch with him and he used this to shine up at the light, and he flashed the torch at it several times. To our surprise the light in the sky flashed back at us several times before taking off at a great speed, heading along the coast towards Townsville, and I still believe that I saw the search light from the Townsville Airport shine up at it, which caused it to shoot out to sea for a distance before turning back in our general direction. It was still way out to sea when it passed behind the island I have already mentioned, proving that it was very low down in the sky. Then it started coming directly back towards us.
This light, or whatever it was, made no sound whatsoever and was obviously big, and it covered what must have been at least a hundred miles in a matter of seconds. Coming back towards us it came to a halt further from us than it had been when we first saw it, and hovered in the sky for a short time before it started to move up and down, and then from side to side. Then, to our horror I suppose, it started coming towards us, making a zigzag pattern as it moved towards us, again making no sound.
Townsville, 11 October 11 2008, 9pm
We live in Cranbrook. I just want to know if anyone else saw it, or know of an aircraft that might have five lights visible at once, that the red and green are back to front, and a vertical pale blue glowing light on the tail “fin”.
Maybe there is a reasonable explanation.
My daughter, 9, and I were outside with Ruby (dog) doing what dogs do.
We saw a strange looking plane in the sky. It came from the left, which is a flight path and headed in the re.ight direction. It suddenly became larger quickly and the lights were all wrong. The red lights were on the right, and the green lights were on the left. There were two at the back and two at the front.
You shouldn’t be able to see all four lights at once anyhow when a plane is flying.
I saw an extra blue light there and the sense of a large tailfin that was a very dim glowing electric light blu
Townsville Strand, August 28 2006, 6.30pm
A witness observed two lights moving about as the stars were coming out, for about 15 minutes. They moved about both slowly and quickly, changing direction. One of the lights disappeared. He took his eyes off the remaining light and when he looked back it was gone.
Ravenswood, 1991 [reported December 2006]
I wish to report a sighting of a Min-Min light between the Burdekin Dam and Ravenswood. It was in May or June 1991. There were five of us in the car. We all worked at the Coutts Burdekin Wilderness Lodge and were on our way to Townsville for a night out. The light followed the car, through the trees for about fifteen minutes.
It looked like a car headlight. At first it was behind us on the left hand-side, then it caught up to us and overtook us, then went across in front of the car and was travelling beside us on the right hand-side. It then seemed to slow and the last we saw it, it was directly behind the car and further back. We were all quite frightened at the time and trying to explain what it could be. What I found most strange is that the incident was never really discussed again between us, even though we lived and worked together. The wilderness lodge closed down at the end of June and we all lost contact. I have thought about the incident many times since and I would be a sceptic if I hadn’t witnessed the phenomena for myself.
Mundingburra, North Queensland, Thursday March 4 2004, 2am
I live at Mundingburra, in Townsville. For the past month between 12.00 midnight and 2.00am my girlfriend and I have seen, a number of times, an object that flashes four distinct colours — red, green, blue and white.
I did manage to take a video of this thing.
There have been no planes or aircraft in area and they would not move as quickly as this object.
Castle Hill, Townsville Wednesday March 31, 2004, 7.15pm
A man was walking his dog, looking west, and observed something that seemed to be a shooting star but changed into a “massive ball”.
It lit up for five seconds or less, was orange and had a small tail. He heard no noise at the time. The object was moving towards Harvey’s Range near the military base.
Independent confirmation of the above sighting was received in December 2004. I also spotted this. I was headed south on Upper Ross River Road at Rassmussen about the same time and saw an identical object, except I recall seeing what looked like sparks emanating from the tail.
North Queensland UFO festival
The only UFO festival in Australia will take place just north of Townsville this year.
The Cardwell UFO Festival is on October 21 and about 2000 UFO enthusiasts are expected to attend.
Cardwell and the region, including Tully which is known for its “Saucer Nest”, is regarded as a hot spot for unusual activity.
Is it a bird, is it a plane, or is it an unidentified flying object?
The flying object spotted in Shrewsbury
Richard and Margaret Pugh were leaving their house in Bicton Heath, Shrewsbury, to get a taxi to the airport when they heard a “low frequency buzzing noise”.
Mr Pugh said it was a “strange shaped aircraft in the sky about 500ft up”.
It may look a frisbee flung in the air, but the couple insist they do not know what the object, seen early Wednesday morning, is or here it came from. The 61-year-old added: “Whilst on the way to the airport at about 6:45am, my family and I spotted this strange circle shaped aircraft in the sky just west of Shrewsbury, near Bicton Heath.
“We were just getting in the taxi to get to the airport on our way to Spain, and we heard a buzzing noise that was a really low frequency and saw this whiz by us. It was only about 500ft up in the sky and was bigger than an RAF Typhoon fighter jet.
“My wife got her phone out and started frantically pressing the camera snap button to get this image.
“Our taxi driver said he couldn’t believe his eyes and it was a UFO.”
“I’ve never seen anything like this and yes it could of been a military drone type aircraft, but having looked on the web we can’t find anything remotely similar.
“The wife thinks it is aliens and I’m not sure – but not ruling it out.”
Astronomers are putting forward a theory that could explain the mysterious presence of antimatter in the middle of the Milky Way. Their study suggests that a specific type of supernova is generating all of the previously unexplained particles.
“SHERLOCKING” OUR GALAXY
While scientists have already uncovered answers to some of the universe’s greatest mysteries, there’s still a great deal we don’t understand — the “alien megastructure” star, fast radio bursts (FRBs), and the (non-)existence of dark matter are just a few examples. Thanks to new research by a team of astronomers, we may now be able to exclude from this list the previously unexplained mystery of antimatter in the Milky Way.
Essentially, antimatter is matter with its electrical charge reversed. For example, an electron’s antiparticle is a positron, while a proton’s antiparticle is an antiproton. When a particle of matter meets its antimatter cohort, they release a burst of energy and annihilate each other.
Some 40 years ago, scientists detected gamma rays that suggested that around 1043positrons were being annihilated in the Milky Way every second. They believe most were concentrated in the central bulge of the galaxy, which didn’t make sense as that area hosts less than half of the galaxy’s total mass. As Roland Crocker, particle astrophysicist at the Australian National University, told Space.com, “The origin of these positrons is a 40-year-old mystery in astrophysics.”
That mystery may finally have a resolution, and it’s a relatively simple one.“You don’t need anything exotic like dark matter to explain the positrons,” claims Crocker. Instead, he and his research team suggest that the positrons may have come from just one kind of supernova. Their study has been published in Nature Astronomy.
DEAD STARS, LOST STARS
Crocker’s team thinks that dim supernovas known as SN 1991bg-like could create all of those unexplained positrons. These supernovas result from the merging of two superdense white dwarf stars, and they generate a huge number of radioactive isotopes known as titanium-44, which is capable of releasing the positrons being annihilated.
But why were these positrons concentrated at the interior of the Milky Way? The researchers explained that SN 1991bg-like supernovas — unlike those resulting from the death of young, massive stars — likely occur in galactic neighborhoods with stars roughly 3 billion to 6 billion years old. Our galaxy’s central bulge happens to have a population of stars older than those in its outer disk.
Of course, while the simplest explanation does often prove to be the right one, Crocker isn’t ruling out a more exciting solution to this decades-old mystery. “The most recent data show that there’s a positron source connected to the very center of the galaxy,” he said. “In our model, this is explained as due to the old stars distributed on roughly 200-parsec [650 light years] scales around the galaxy’s supermassive black hole, but the black hole itself is an interesting alternative source.”
Strange beams of plasma that have been observed that seem to defy the laws of physics by moving faster than the speed of light.
A FASCINATING COSMIC Q-TIP
In the Galaxy M87 (which was created when two other galaxies merged), a jet of hot plasma — caused by gas being sucked into a central black hole, being heated, and then shot out by magnetic fields — has been helping us gain insight into the weird origins of our galaxy. It is shaped like a thin beam and is emitted from the center of a black hole.
Heber Curtis, an astronomer, first saw a ray of light connected to the galaxy in 1918. In order to see it with his instruments at the time, it had to be huge. And it turns out, it was; measuring at almost 6000 light years long.
The Hubble Space Telescope monitored its development between 1995 and 1999 and, after four years of photos, they saw the plasma ripple outwards faster than what was being emitted from the black hole, meaning it must be moving faster than the speed of light. In 2013, after 13 years of images, it appeared to move in corkscrew-like spirals, making this strange occurrence even more mystifying.

UNDERSTANDING OUR UNIVERSE
M87 is, however, not unique in this way. Since the first observation, researchers have discovered similar phenomena in other galaxies. Although the causes behind it are still enigmatic, these observations could aid us in our search in understanding how black holes function in the creation or destruction of galaxies. Similarly, an enormous magnetic bridge spanning multiple galaxies has been recently discovered.
Eileen Meyer, Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, said about the plasma,“We can see, over a human lifetime, things moving […] Which is crazy.” The speed of this process is particularly remarkable because of how powerful it is.
New research from Brown University suggests that huge amounts of water may be found under the surface of the Moon. The presence of water in the Moon's mantle could provide insight to how water got to Earth and help sustain future deep space missions.
A “WET” MANTLE
Scientists have long speculated about the presence of water on the Moon. Previous studies found traces of water in the icy shadowed regions of the Moon’s poles, but a recent study from Brown University suggests that there may be substantial amounts of water hiding inside the lunar rock.
Unlike the water in the lunar poles, which could have been caused by hydrogen coming from solar winds, the water in the mantle came very early in the Moon’s formation, Brown University geologist Ralph Milliken said in an interview with Space.com. In their study published in the journal Nature Geoscience, Milliken and his team examined pyroclastic deposits — rock layers which were probably formed from large volcanic eruptions — using satellite data from the Moon Mineralogy Mapper instrument on the Indian Chandrayaan-1 probe.
“Our work shows that nearly all of the large pyroclastic deposits also contain water, so this seems to be a common characteristic of magmas that come from the deep lunar interior,” Milliken said in the interview. “That is, most of the mantle of the moon may be ‘wet.'”
FUELING FUTURE EXPLORATIONS
How large amounts of water ended up under the Moon’s surface remains unclear. Understanding it the water got there, possibly “delivered after the giant impact event,” as Milliken’s team thinks, could help explain how water came to be on Earth.
Even more interesting is the potential help lunar water could give to future exploration on the Moon and beyond. “These deposits may be much easier to access than potential water ice in shadowed regions at the lunar poles,” Milliken added in the interview. “Water is heavy and expensive to take from Earth to space, so any bit of water that you can get on the moon instead of bringing with you from Earth is a big deal and opens up possibilities for sustained human presence on the moon.”
This would be especially useful since some Mars missions in the works right now — notably NASA’s — involve using the Moon as a jump off point. A potential lunar base would be easier to maintain given the presence of water on Earth’s satellite.
“The better we understand how much water is there, then the better we can estimate the processes responsible and the usefulness of the deposits for future human exploration,” Milliken said to Space.com.
NASA has bought supersonic aircrafts a step further by completing the preliminary design review for a Quiet Supersonic Transport. It is one of many projects that could herald a second golden age of flight.
A THUMP IN THE FLIGHT
NASA’s Quiet Supersonic Transport (QueSST) — an experimental X-plane the organization has been developing with Lockheed Martin to decrease the strength of sonic booms — has passed an initial design review. It flew successfully in an 2.5-meter by 2-meter (eight-foot by six-foot) supersonic wind tunnel at NASA’s Glenn Research Center.
The plane is the first stage in NASA’s wider plan to make the Low Boom Flight Demonstration (LBFD) airplane, and it completed its objective comfortably. A NASA statement said “the QueSST design is capable of fulfilling the LBFD aircraft’s mission objectives, which are to fly at supersonic speeds — 1.4 times the speed of sound — but create a soft ‘thump’ instead of the disruptive sonic boom associated with supersonic flight today.”
The next stages in the plan are to hire a contractor to build the piloted, single-engine plane, with initial flight testing ideally occurring in 2021. The next test will focus on ascertaining the consequences the atmosphere has on supersonic speed and quantifying the effect the plane will have on people on the ground through a combination of measurement and survey findings.
YEAR OF THE PLANE?
NASA’s experimental plane is one of many test aircraft that are looking to push the boundaries of aviation in different directions.
In terms of pure speed, Lockhead Martin has confirmed that the SR-72 — reportedly capable of mach 6 speeds — will be made for surveillance purposes, while British-based Skylon is planning to use a 5.4 mach plane to deliver payloads into space.
Microsoft Co-Founder Paul Allen is also looking to apply planes to cosmic ends, but has developed the biggest plane ever rather than one of the fastest. After testing is complete, the Stratolaunch will be used to ferry spacecraft into orbit where they will require less energy to reach space when compared to a ground take off.
Eviation Aircraft will target the green aviation industry by producing an all-electric prototype which could be the first stage in decreasing the carbon footprint of the aircraft industry. The plane is produces zero-emissions and is capable of flying 965 km/h (600 mph).
BETZ MYSTERY SPHERE – AN ALIEN ARTIFACT FOUND BY A FAMILY?
BETZ MYSTERY SPHERE – AN ALIEN ARTIFACT FOUND BY A FAMILY?
THIS IS A STRANGE AND UNUSUAL STORY OF THE BETZ MYSTERY SPHERE THAT COULD DEFY THE LAWS OF GRAVITY…BUT NO ONE KNEW WHAT IT WAS OR WHERE IT HAD CAME FROM.
In 1974, the Betz family made as startling discovery that took the world media by storm. But no one knew what this mysterious metal ball was, which has become known as The Betz Mystery Sphere.
FINDING THE MYSTERY SPHERE
Fire ravaged 880 acres of a woodland property on Fort George Island, Florida that had a history going back to the 16th century, where a Spanish mission had once been located.
While Antoine Betz a Marine Engineer and his wife Gerri were examining the fire damage to their property, they came across a strange sphere on the ground.
At first they thought it may have been cannonball given the areas history – but they soon realized by the highly polished metal surface of the seamless orb…this was something different.
They then thought maybe the space aged looking object could have fallen from a NASA or Soviet satellite, flying above and somehow landed on their property.
Thy mysterious orb was about the size of a bowling ball and weight 22 lbs; but the unusual thing was that it had a strange elongated triangle, that was etched on the surface.
Seeing it as only a strange curiosity, the family decided to take it home with them and their son Terry, wanted to keep it in his room – but that did not last for too long.
UNUSUAL THINGS BEGAN TO HAPPEN WITH THE BETZ MYSTERY SPHERE
A couple weeks after the unusual find, Terry was playing his guitar and to his shock, the metallic orb started to react to the sound of the strumming. According to his testimony, the sphere resonated out a deep throbbing noise that seemed to greatly upset the family dog. Then it began to move to certain chords being played.
It didn’t take long before the Betz family discovered that the strange object had other strange characteristics.
When they pushed it across the floor, it would stop, vibrate then suddenly change direction and return back to the person who had pushed it.
They also saw it roll around the edge of the table finely balanced but it did not fall off onto the floor. On one occasion, they tilted the table at an angle, then saw that the sphere defy gravity and travel back up the leg of the table.
The family also claimed that it rolled for approximately 12 minutes continuously, while changing direction by itself but never once stopping. They considered all options and decided that it may have been fitted with a very sophisticated guidance system that allowed it to do this.
From what they had observed, the strange orb seemed to be powered by solar energy (even though solar energy was first discovered by Alexandre Edmond Becquerel in 1839, it was not in commonly used in 1974). They noticed that when the sun was shining brightly – the orb was more active.
Terry who had a curious nature, decided that he would do some tests of his own to try and work out what this strange object was.
First he gently hit the sphere with a hammer, which resulted in it ringing like a bell. Then he shook it vigorously and the orb suddenly rolled around the room as if trying to escape from him.
It is rumored that at night the Betz family would keep it in a sealed box – so that it would not escape.
Occasionally the orb would emit a rattling or low frequency vibration, as if there was some sort of mechanism running inside.
The Betz family were stunned at the sphere’s capabilities and started showing it to family and friends – they were equally shocked and it rapidly became an object of fascination.
SCIENTIFIC STUDY INTO THE BETZ MYSTERY SPHERE
Word soon got around about the Betz Mystery Sphere and quickly it started a media frenzy – everyone wanted to know about this strange ball.
Both officials from NASA, The Military Corp and Arial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) were sent out to see the sphere. They examined the steel object and could determine that there was no indication that it was manufactured or tampered with.
The military personnel would arrive skeptical onlookers, but by the time they left, were full of questions.
Despite requests from officials to take the ball to a lab for testing, the Betz family refused…but soon they had no choice.
THE BETZ MYSTERY SPHERE IS STUDIED
Soon the sphere started to exhibit strange and almost poltergeist behavior.
Doors would suddenly slam shut of their own accord and at night the house would fill with loud organ music – despite the fact that the Betz family did not own an organ.
This quickly became too much for the Betz family, so they agreed to allow the orb to be tested under scientific conditions – they wanted to know what this was?
The orb was taken to Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Florida, where the sphere was given to both scientists and metallurgists to examine.
They tried to x-ray the sphere to see what was inside, however x-ray machine was not strong enough to penetrate the metal, which they found baffling.
They determined that sphere was 7.96 inches wide (20 cm) and 21.43 pounds (9.67 kilograms), which could withstand 120,000 of pressure per square inch. It was made of magnetic stainless steel of the excellent quality, designed to withstand the highest heat temperatures and was corrosive resistant.
FURTHER STUDIES INTO THE BETZ MYSTERY SPHERE
The navy eventually used a 300 KV x-ray and discovered 2 objects inside the sphere – surrounded by a halo of material with unusual density. They also discovered that the spheres displayed 4 magnetic poles, 2 positive and 2 negative which did not have the same center.
It also showed signs of being radioactive but it was not explosive and one scientist (Dr Carl Wilson) was noted as saying that it“defies the law know to physics”. Another scientist (Dr J A Harder) is reported to have said that the elements inside were heavier than anything known to science.
THE MYSTERY CONTINUES
There have been people who have tried to debunk the Betz Mystery Sphere with many explanations ranging from: it was a lost steel ball that was meant to be used for an art project – to a sea bottom marker that somehow got into their burnt out field.
Since that time, other orbs have been found on earth since 1974 that include from Australia, Russia, Iraq and America …but no one knows what they are or where they come from.
Now over time no one talks anymore about The Betz Mystery Sphere – but where is it now? No one seems to know….and it has somehow disappeared from many people’s mind.
Six Of The Most Widely-Believed Alien Conspiracy Theories
Six Of The Most Widely-Believed Alien Conspiracy Theories
Disappointed by Skyline? Tantalized by Castle’s X-Files-y episode this week? Want an alien conspiracy with some meat on its bones (or exoskeleton, as the case may be)? Here are six of the greatest real-life alien conspiracy theories.
Actually, “real-life” is kind of a dubious term when talking about this kind of thing. The world of alien conspiracies is an improbably complex and interwoven one. It’s filled with weird personalities, unexplainable events, half-remembered government secrets, and countless races of alien visitors, all with their own agendas.
1. Roswell
So let’s start with arguably the grand-daddy of UFO conspiracy events: the supposed Roswell UFO incident. In 1947, the Roswell Air Force Base issued a press release saying that they’d found a mysterious metallic disc on a nearby ranch. The press was, of course, intrigued, but the base quickly changed their wording slightly: they’d found what appeared to be the remnants of a weather balloon.
The change was not quick enough, of course: the local papers ran giant headlines saying that the air force had recovered a crashed alien spaceship. And in the years since, that story has stuck, as accounts surfaced from employees at the base that include multiple crash sites, massive cover-ups, and even a reported alien autopsy (a film released in 1995 purported to depict the actual autopsy, but it its creator admitted that “most” of the footage was fake, thereby sort of discrediting all of the footage).
Die-hards still stand by these scant accounts of fishy dealings at Roswell. The supposed cover-up has permeated public perception of the base, leading to a Star Trek plot, a Futurama episode, and even an entire TV series, among many others. It also launched a veritable squadron of alien conspiracies. Some still believe that the spaceship remnants and alien bodies have been squirreled away in some sort of secret military enclave.
2. Area 51
And Area 51 might just be that military enclave. The actual base has long been a very closely-guarded secret, including wide “trespassers will be shot” stretches around the base itself and a large no-fly zone surrounding it.
According to conspiracy theorists, what we can see of Area 51 is just the tip of the paranoid iceberg. The base allegedly features elaborate underground labs, hidden tunnels, a dedicated extra-terrestrial runway that can disappear and reappear, and research programs dedicated to reverse-engineering alien technology.
In one particularly colorful and alluring detail, two different alleged former Area 51 employees reported working side-by-side with an alien being named “J-Rod” on cloning alien viruses and on a telepathic translator device (it’s funnier if you imagine J-Rod as Jar-Jar; I’d watch that movie).
And the mystery of Area 51 is still only one example of the vast network of supposed government cover-up of alien contact.
3. Project Blue Book and the Majestic 12
The government has been relatively transparent with Project Blue Book. It was an endeavor for the US government to catalog and examine every instance of supposed alien contact, visitation, and spacecraft reported to them. The project spanned years (and many incarnations), and its official result was that there existed no substantial evidence that these incidents were the result of alien visitation.
But that didn’t stop conspiracy theorists. In addition to challenging the rigor of the study, some “experts” on the subject stand by the claim that Blue Book became a distraction and cover-up from the reality of alien visitation, which included a top secret international squad called Majestic 12 to perpetrate the elaborate smoke-screen. Among the alleged weaponry of this massive cover-up are disinformation campaigns, character assassination, and elaborate webs of government lies.
Another weapon in the cover-up arsenal is the network of supposed Men in Black responsible for doing the actual dirty work. You’ve seen them in Will Smith movies and on the X-Files, but die-hard alien conspiracy theorists claim they’re everywhere, as CIA agents, or as shape-shifting aliens, or even inter-dimensional beings. Some even report encounters with these men in black (like the account in the video above), and some say they have the smashed cameras and bruises to prove it.
But WHY would the government try to cover up alien invasions? Just what are they hiding?
4. The Reptilians
The cover-up might just be so that world leaders can hide their true reptilian nature. Conspiracy theorist (and very creative thinker) David Icke is the man primarily responsible for the paranoia about secret shape-shifting reptile-like aliens invading Slitheen-style and replacing high-ranking political leaders. There are countless videos and images all over the internet purporting to depict these reptilians slipping and revealing their true selves.
One of my favorite details about Icke’s worldview is that of the Red Dresses. These are personality-less software constructs of the reptilian invaders installed at high rank to facilitate the aliens’ plans. This particular theory is what leads to stunning images like the one above, which reveals a few of the “red dresses” in their true form.
Another proponent of this reptilian-invasion worldview recently gained a bit of notoriety when discussing her own version of the conspiracy. Her name is Colleen Thomas, and she wants to warn us all of the impending shadow-government dirty bombing and a Draconian-Reptilian invasion.
These reptilian usurpers and shape-shifters are supposed to have been around for millennia, manipulating all of human history for their own gain. But Icke and his reptilian cronies aren’t the first to propose alien invasions in ancient history.
5. Ancient Astronauts
As long as we’re talking about extraterrestrials secretly influencing human history, we have to talk about the “ancient astronauts.” Erich von Däniken, in his landmark (in certain circles) book, Chariots of the Gods?, posits that Earth has been the frequent recipient of alien visitors. These visitors have brought with them advanced technologies, some of which helped build the pyramids, the Moai statues on Easter Island, Stonehenge, and more.
Many religions have developed as a response to this particular conspiracy, and we’ve covered some of the most absurd ones before. Hidden histories like this tend to have religious implications. But, as the next item demonstrates, they sometimes have unexpected political implications.
6. Esoteric Hitlerism
As with any internet discussion, it all eventually turns to a discussion of Nazism. And alien conspiracy theories are no exception, with my favorite of the weird extraterrestrial conspiracies, Esoteric Hitlerism.
Spearheaded by Miguel Serrano, Esoteric Hitlerists believe that the Aryan race is descended from an alien species of the highest order. Finding evidence in the story of the Nephilim in the bible, Serrano believes that an ancient alien civilization came to Earth to enlighten man. They bred with ancient earthlings, and the Aryan race are the only race alive that maintains any of the purity in their blood of these lofty ancestors. Serrano taught that the alien gods were hiding, with Adolf Hitler, in an icy underground fortress, from which they will one day emerge with fleets of spacecraft to usher in the Fourth Reich.
Yikes.
So if you are disappointed by a fictional portrayal of the secret alien interactions with humanity, you can always fall back on the real things that people believe. Sometimes, especially in the case of Esoteric Hitlerism, not only is the truth stranger than fiction – some people’s version of the truth is just too strange for fiction.

Mysterious Ancient Underground Worlds
5 Mysterious Ancient Underground Worlds
Expeditions exploring deep, mysterious tunnels and caves in various parts of the world return with strange tales of subterranean civilizations, cities and advanced yet ancient technology. Many of these remarkable underground worlds remain shrouded in mystery because we have not been able to locate them yet. There are also fascinating very old underground tunnels, caves and cities that have been discovered, but the history behind them remains unsolved because we have no idea who built them and for what purposes.
1. UNDERGROUND TUNNEL SYSTEM BENEATH THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA
There is a lost history completely ignored by mainstream scholars when it comes to the Ancient Egyptian Civilization and the enigmatic Pyramids which according to many predates the Egyptian Civilization itself.
West of the middle pyramid on the Giza Plateau, the ground rises to its highest point where there are some of the surviving buildings of The Harvard camp, established by George Reisner in 1902 to pursue the aims of the Hearst Expedition of the University of California. The high ground suddenly drops away beyond the buildings leaving eroded cliffs facing north which have many tomb entrances dotted along its length.
The Labyrinth of Egypt has been described by a number of ancient writers such as Herodotus, Strabo, Diodorus, and Pliny. The labyrinth’s age and ancient origins are unclear, but at the time of Herodotus’ visit it was more than 1,300 years old.
2. Tunnels in Bucegi Mountains
In the summer of 2003, in an unexplored area of the Bucegi mountains, an epochal discovery was found that would completely change the destiny of mankind.
There are 4 primary tunnels and further sub-tunnels that lead to deep underground places which you would have heard of.
In these tunnels you will find rooms, huge rooms, with huge tables and stone chairs for people much, much taller than us.
The projection room contains all our history and can be replayed visually.
A table where you can perform holographic experiments with DNA, mix and match anything you wish and see what the results would be.
These rooms were created at least 50,000 years ago and each is connected to each other, protected by an energy source which actives all as one is activated.
3. Underground City Beneath Death Valley
The very thought that there could be a secret city lying beneath California’s Death Valley that is more than 5,000 years old is astonishing and difficult for many people to believe. But for those who have entered the subterranean tunnels underneath the ground and visited this amazing location, it is all very real. There are many who believe that the underground city was once inhabited by an unknown race, now thousands of years later, the area is abandoned, however, visitors say that they have witnessed some strange artifacts while exploring inside.
The ancient city known as Shin-Au-Av could have been home to many different races, but it is important to look at the legends of the Paiute Indians before you start to imagine various creatures of the unknown lurking underground.
4. Lost Cave City in the Grand Canyon?
Did an ancient civilization live in caves below the Grand Canyon? This is as vague a statement as wondering why some of the ancient Mesoamerican people depicted their gods as white men or the Olmec gods looked African. Stretching the imagination … perhaps whatever was found in the Grand Canyon caves discussed below, is linked to Ancient Alien Theory. It is interesting to speculate on ancient Egyptians or Tibetans flying to the Grand Canyon in Vimanas, but, to date, there is no tangible proof to support these claims.
5. Highly Sophisticated Underground City Of Derinkuyu
The underground city of Derinkuyu is an ancient city located beneath the surface of the Derinkuyu district in the Nevşehir Province, Turkey. It is one of the most amazing underground cities to have been discovered, and no one knows its exact age, making this already awesome underground city even cooler.
In 1963, approximately 50 miles (30 km) south of Nevsehir, Cappadocia, Turkey, Omer Demir stumbled across a deep hole (in Turkish: derinkuyu) that led to a steep path leading deeper down to passages, niches and shafts dug into the bedrock.
After intensive excavation, it became clear that Derinkuyu was an entire city complex built in that hole beneath the surface.
If your doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong with you, don’t blame them … blame the universe. A new study found that half of your body, not to mention half of everything around you, comes from a galaxy other than the Milky Way. No wonder we have so many half-assed half-wits pushing half-baked theories full of half-truths and half-cocked schemes. Blame it on the halves from Andromeda.
Actually, the theory is not as half-baked as it sounds. Daniel Anglés-Alcázar, the leader of the study published this week in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, points to galactic winds as the culprit.
“It is likely that much of the Milky Way’s matter was in other galaxies before it was kicked out by a powerful wind, traveled across intergalactic space and eventually found its new home in the Milky Way.”
A long time ago from a galaxy far, far away …
His team at the Northwestern University astrophysics center, CIERA (Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics), developed a supercomputer model to simulate various scenarios of how galaxies were formed in order to study wind recycling. Let your imagination run wild on that phrase for a minute. Finished? Wind recycling occurs when galactic winds are formed by supernovae and push gas particles around at high speeds. Some of this wind leaves the supernova’s galaxy, but a small amount gets sucked back in and used again – wind recycling. Did your imaginary picture of it involve deep breathing and a crowded galactic elevator?
As is the case in so many simulations, what the scientists found had nothing to do with what they were looking for. The models showed that the wind frequently escapes from its own galaxy and travls billions of light years across space to be absorbed in other galaxies and form new stars. . For some reason, this flow occurs most often from small galaxies to larger ones. Anglés-Alcázar got to name this phenomenon “intergalactic transfer.”
“It was actually surprising for us to find out that there is that much exchange of mass between galaxies.”
Which one are you from?
How much is ‘that much’? The simulations showed that a galaxy like the Milky Way (do we really care that much about the other ones?) got half of its matter from other galaxies. The disbelieving researchers checked their figures by converting the simulations to 3-D and the intergalactic transfer produced the same results … in 3-D.
For those who want to be space travelers but don’t think it will happen in their lifetime, Anglés-Alcázar has good news for you.
“Given how much of the matter out of which we formed may have come from other galaxies, we could consider ourselves space travelers or extragalactic immigrants.”
If we’re all extragalactic immigrants on this planet, isn’t it time we stopped pointing fingers and started getting along?
The Russian Colonel claims he had a “personal” encounter with aliens and that he had seen President Michael Gorbachev and Yeltsin meet with extraterrestrials.
He also issued a statement of warning from a real alien invasion upcoming, as the extraterrestrial beings are already here and have held humanity hostage without their knowledge, but with cooperation from their leaders.
In an interview, Skryabin says our leaders have sold out humanity down the river and to the aliens, the invasion is just few steps away.
The interview was given to a newspaper of Czech Republic and published in its website. However, in two days this interview was deleted from everywhere…
This Russian General have made contact with extraterrestrials as he was sent underground to conduct a personal training with them, he said “It was terrible experience, Humanity was sold fully to the ET’s by our president and the corrupted government”

An 'alien boy' with a weirdly elongated skull found in a tomb in Crimea was in fact a a boy marked out to be an ancient warrior, say Russian archaeologists.
The artificially lengthened head was a feature of children being groomed as Sarmatian fighters almost 2,000 years ago, they say.
Archaeologists made the startling find at a burial site close to a giant £2.9billion ($3.8billion) bridge currently under construction.
It was immediately called an 'alien's grave', said the scientists.
An 'alien boy' with a weirdly elongated skull found in a tomb in Crimea was in fact a trainee ancient warrior, say Russian archaeologists. The artificially lengthened head (pictured) was a feature of children being groomed as Sarmatian fighters almost two thousand years ago
ELONGATED SKULL
One of the most characteristic traits of the Late Sarmatian culture was the artificial deformation of skulls.
This was probably accomplished by tying a soft cloth around the infant's head, forcing an elongation of the cranium.
Special wooden planks were bound to the skull, pressing the bones and gradually altering the shape.
Such deformations were seen as altering the character, and making the warriors 'more aggressive'.
This cultural trait was specific to the populations living east of the Don River, according to the Silk Road foundation.
The high amount of offensive weapons found in Sarmatian graves indicates they lived a military-oriented nomadic life.
The find was made at Kyz-Aul, close to Kerch, where Vladimir Putin has commissioned construction of the bridge.
It will connect the peninsula, annexed from Ukraine in a 2014 military operation, to mainland Russia.
One Russian state media outlet reported that 'some adherents of "ancient astronauts" theories claim that the owners of such lengthened skulls may be human-extraterrestrial hybrids'.
The boy warrior from the second century AD is believed to have been aged between 18 months and two years old when he died.
Nikolay Sudarev, a scientist from the Archaeology Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences, denied the grave was linked to alien civilisations.
'Elongated skulls were traditional for the Sarmatian culture,' he said, according to Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.
'They thought this was more beautiful.'
The artificially elongated skull was a sign of a 'true warrior' and the deformation process was practiced by a number of ancient cultures.
It began early in childhood when the bones were still soft, and no surgery was needed.

While this infant was identified as male the Sarmatians were also famed for their female warriors who helped to conquer Crimea in ancient times.
The prominent role of the group's women in warfare was seen as an inspiration to the Amazons.

A strange craft has been accidentally photographed just at the moment the unknown craft flew over a lake outside Shoshone Wyoming.
The photographer, a retired USAF employee said: On July 1, 2017 I was on my way home from Las Vegas when I had to use the restroom at Boysen Reservoir outside Shoshone Wyoming.
After returning to my vehicle I realized that I had locked my keys in the truck. I called my wife to bring me the extra set of keys. I was less than 90 miles from my house. It would take her around 90 minutes to get to me.
I snapped a couple of photos of the lake and sent them to my son. It was around 3pm. My wife arrived and was home around 7pm. I downloaded the pictures from my phone into the computer about 15 days later.
When I looked at them on the screen something caught my attention on the right side of the picture a little over halfway up.
I enlarged it and was not sure what I was looking at. I asked my wife to come look at it at normal size. She said "I see a lake and a UFO".
We both studied it and cannot explain what we were looking at. I am retired USAF and after 20 years of service I can't remember seeing anything that looked like it.
At the time I took the picture I did not see or hear anything. I would greatly appreciate any information that you could give regarding what this is. Mufon case 85445.
Explain This! Flying "Reptile" Head caught on camera over the River Tay, Scotland?
Explain This! Flying "Reptile" Head caught on camera over the River Tay, Scotland?
While visiting the river Tay in Scotland a family photographed a strange object in the sky described as a strange huge brown egg shaped object, but to me it looks like the head of a reptile or fish.
Now it is known that sometimes, fish falling from the sky once they get up into the weather system caused by severe weather conditions. It is common for example for tornados to suck up water and fish from rivers and drop them hundreds of miles away.
If such an event happens than mostly hundreds of fish falling from the sky at once, but in this case we only see a head which doesn't seem to fall out from the sky.
The photographer states: On July 28, 2017 I was at the beach with family and we saw dolphins in the river Tay. My girlfriend from Bulgaria doesn't believe that we have dolphins in the river in Scotland so I tried to snap some shots of them with my Sony Xperia x 23mp camera.
I took several pictures while focusing on the water and when I looked back to see if I had caught any dolphins emerging, one of the photos in the middle of the set taken had a strange brown egg shaped object in the sky.
Clearly the object is in the distance and is not dirt on or in my lens as my device is waterproof therefore airtight and nothing shows in the pictures before or after. I just can't explain it.

Detecting Alien Life Will Likely Be a Protracted Process, Not a Eureka Moment
Scientific discovery most often comes through incremental progress rather than epiphanies, and there’s no reason to suggest discovering alien intelligence will be different.
Would it be easy to determine if the source of a mysterious radio signal was aliens? Probably not. A new paper argues that contact with extraterrestrials will likely be discovered through a prolonged, incremental process rather than an instantaneous eureka-like moment. Eureka — what the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes allegedly said when he cracked a tough science problem about water displacement — tends to be the exception in science rather than the rule.
Attributing scientific progress to eureka moments is popular because it is easy to understand, argues Milan Cirkovic, a senior research associate at the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade and an assistant physics professor at the University of Novi Sad in Serbia and Montenegro. But, he writes in the journal Space Policy, "It puts too big an emphasis on the 'origin myths' and the role of great personalities, key moments, events, and circumstances in any historical process.”
Cirkovic said in an email that the community involved in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) should instead be prepared for a process that would take a very long time. It may take decades as the SETI community looks at all the reasons aliens might not be the source of a mysterious signal.
"I have only tried to point out that both history of science and logic and common sense suggest — on a descriptive level — that contact will be a protracted affair, probably not recognizable as such over timescales of years or decades," Cirkovic said. He was careful not to say how contact might proceed, but that it would take a long time and repeated observations.
Think about the protracted debate concerning "Tabby's star," which is showing strange brightening and dimming. Some say it's due to a possible "alien megastructure," while others are pointing to various natural processes, such as exocomets.
"More structure is obviously necessary, as far as signals are concerned," Cirkovic said. "The example often quoted (first due to Nikola Tesla, who was somewhat forgotten as a SETI pioneer) is the presence of prime numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, ... etc. in the signal."
Prime numbers are a non-natural process that are considered by SETI scholars an indication of possible life.
"However," Cirkovic added, "this is the classic understanding of the first contact which I actually intend to undermine in the present paper. I argue — after some of the SETI ‘founding fathers,’ notably Nikolai Kardashev — that we are more likely to detect an anomalous astrophysical phenomenon, which would be a signpost of massive engineering effort by extraterrestrial intelligence.”
He added that in recent years the SETI community has said it expects contact to come through detecting one of these engineering signatures rather than through a radio signal. Cirkovic and some other experts call this "Dysonian SETI", after a 2011 paper that Cirkovic co-authored and was led by Robert Bradbury of the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade.
Cirkovic — who has published more than 20 papers and a book on SETI since 2004 — urges the community to recalibrate its detectors, equipment, and models to better look for Dysonian SETI, which "deserves much more attention."
