Cedar Rapids UFO Sighting 5 Years Ago Today

The month of August will bring several astronomical sights to the skies of Cedar Rapids, including the Perseids Meteor Shower on August 12, and the Total Solar Eclipse on August 21st.

But it was on this date, August 6th, exactly five years ago that this amazing video of a UFO was captured over Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Yes, I am a believer in extra-terrestrial life and evidence like this only confirms my suspicions that we are not alone.

According to You Tube, the person who captured the vide was not sure if it was a star or plane, but was completely spooked when it begins to jump and dance across the sky.

“At first we were not sure if it was just a star, light, plane, or what, but it was right next to the moon–glowing pretty bright. But the second the light took of and started shooting and dancing across the night sky, our skepticism jumped to curiosity.”

I wonder if this object might make a return appearance on the 5th anniversary of it’s sighting in this video. With the full moon arriving on the 9th of August, it would be freaky cool to see if this unidentified visitor makes a return to the night sky sometime this week.

The rapid development of so-called NBIC technologies – nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and cognitive science – are giving rise to possibilities that have long been the domain of science fiction. Disease, ageing and even death are all human realities that these technologies seek to end.

They may enable us to enjoy greater “morphological freedom” – we could take on new forms through prosthetics or genetic engineering. Or advance our cognitive capacities. We could use brain-computer interfaces to link us to advanced artificial intelligence (AI).

Nanobots could roam our bloodstream to monitor our health and enhance our emotional propensities for joy, love or other emotions. Advances in one area often raise new possibilities in others, and this “convergence” may bring about radical changes to our world in the near-future.

“Transhumanism” is the idea that humans should transcend their current natural state and limitations through the use of technology – that we should embrace self-directed human evolution. If the history of technological progress can be seen as humankind’s attempt to tame nature to better serve its needs, transhumanism is the logical continuation: the revision of humankind’s nature to better serve its fantasies.

As David Pearce, a leading proponent of transhumanism and co-founder of Humanity+, says:

If we want to live in paradise, we will have to engineer it ourselves. If we want eternal life, then we’ll need to rewrite our bug-ridden genetic code and become god-like … only hi-tech solutions can ever eradicate suffering from the world. Compassion alone is not enough.

But there is a darker side to the naive faith that Pearce and other proponents have in transhumanism – one that is decidedly dystopian.

There is unlikely to be a clear moment when we emerge as transhuman. Rather technologies will become more intrusive and integrate seamlessly with the human body. Technology has long been thought of as an extension of the self. Many aspects of our social world, not least our financial systems, are already largely machine-based. There is much to learn from these evolving human/machine hybrid systems.

Yet the often Utopian language and expectations that surround and shape our understanding of these developments have been under-interrogated. The profound changes that lie ahead are often talked about in abstract ways, because evolutionary “advancements” are deemed so radical that they ignore the reality of current social conditions.

In this way, transhumanism becomes a kind of “techno-anthropocentrism”, in which transhumanists often underestimate the complexity of our relationship with technology. They see it as a controllable, malleable tool that, with the correct logic and scientific rigour, can be turned to any end. In fact, just as technological developments are dependent on and reflective of the environment in which they arise, they in turn feed back into the culture and create new dynamics – often imperceptibly.

Situating transhumanism, then, within the broader social, cultural, political, and economic contexts within which it emerges is vital to understanding how ethical it is.

Competitive environments

Max More and Natasha Vita-More, in their edited volume The Transhumanist Reader, claim the need in transhumanism “for inclusivity, plurality and continuous questioning of our knowledge”.

Yet these three principles are incompatible with developing transformative technologies within the prevailing system from which they are currently emerging: advanced capitalism.

One problem is that a highly competitive social environment doesn’t lend itself to diverse ways of being. Instead it demands increasingly efficient behaviour. Take students, for example. If some have access to pills that allow them to achieve better results, can other students afford not to follow? This is already a quandary. Increasing numbers of students reportedly pop performance-enhancing pills. And if pills become more powerful, or if the enhancements involve genetic engineering or intrusive nanotechnology that offer even stronger competitive advantages, what then? Rejecting an advanced technological orthodoxy could potentially render someone socially and economically moribund (perhaps evolutionarily so), while everyone with access is effectively forced to participate to keep up.

Going beyond everyday limits is suggestive of some kind of liberation. However, here it is an imprisoning compulsion to act a certain way. We literally have to transcend in order to conform (and survive). The more extreme the transcendence, the more profound the decision to conform and the imperative to do so.

The systemic forces cajoling the individual into being “upgraded” to remain competitive also play out on a geo-political level. One area where technology R&D has the greatest transhumanist potential is defence. DARPA (the US defence department responsible for developing military technologies), which is attempting to create “metabolically dominant soldiers”, is a clear example of how vested interests of a particular social system could determine the development of radically powerful transformative technologies that have destructive rather than Utopian applications.

The rush to develop super-intelligent AI by globally competitive and mutually distrustful nation states could also become an arms race. In Radical Evolution, novelist Verner Vinge describes a scenario in which superhuman intelligence is the “ultimate weapon”. Ideally, mankind would proceed with the utmost care in developing such a powerful and transformative innovation.

There is quite rightly a huge amount of trepidation around the creation of super-intelligence and the emergence of “the singularity” – the idea that once AI reaches a certain level it will rapidly redesign itself, leading to an explosion of intelligence that will quickly surpass that of humans (something that will happen by 2029 according to futurist Ray Kurzweil). If the world takes the shape of whatever the most powerful AI is programmed (or reprograms itself) to desire, it even opens the possibility of evolution taking a turn for the entirely banal – could an AI destroy humankind from a desire to produce the most paperclips for example?

It’s also difficult to conceive of any aspect of humanity that could not be “improved” by being made more efficient at satisfying the demands of a competitive system. It is the system, then, that determines humanity’s evolution – without taking any view on what humans are or what they should be. One of the ways in which advanced capitalism proves extremely dynamic is in its ideology of moral and metaphysical neutrality. As philosopher Michael Sandel says: markets don’t wag fingers. In advanced capitalism, maximising one’s spending power maximises one’s ability to flourish – hence shopping could be said to be a primary moral imperative of the individual.

Philosopher Bob Doede rightly suggests it is this banal logic of the market that will dominate:

If biotech has rendered human nature entirely revisable, then it has no grain to direct or constrain our designs on it. And so whose designs will our successor post-human artefacts likely bear? I have little doubt that in our vastly consumerist, media-saturated capitalist economy, market forces will have their way. So – the commercial imperative would be the true architect of the future human.

Whether the evolutionary process is determined by a super-intelligent AI or advanced capitalism, we may be compelled to conform to a perpetual transcendence that only makes us more efficient at activities demanded by the most powerful system. The end point is predictably an entirely nonhuman – though very efficient – technological entity derived from humanity that doesn’t necessarily serve a purpose that a modern-day human would value in any way. The ability to serve the system effectively will be the driving force. This is also true of natural evolution – technology is not a simple tool that allows us to engineer ourselves out of this conundrum. But transhumanism could amplify the speed and least desirable aspects of the process.

Information authoritarianism

For bioethicist Julian Savulescu, the main reason humans must be enhanced is for our species to survive. He says we face a Bermuda Triangle of extinction: radical technological power, liberal democracy and our moral nature. As a transhumanist, Savulescu extols technological progress, also deeming it inevitable and unstoppable. It is liberal democracy – and particularly our moral nature – that should alter.

The failings of humankind to deal with global problems are increasingly obvious. But Savulescu neglects to situate our moral failings within their wider cultural, political and economic context, instead believing that solutions lie within our biological make up.

Yet how would Savulescu’s morality-enhancing technologies be disseminated, prescribed and potentially enforced to address the moral failings they seek to “cure”? This would likely reside in the power structures that may well bear much of the responsibility for these failings in the first place. He’s also quickly drawn into revealing how relative and contestable the concept of “morality” is:

We will need to relax our commitment to maximum protection of privacy. We’re seeing an increase in the surveillance of individuals and that will be necessary if we are to avert the threats that those with antisocial personality disorder, fanaticism, represent through their access to radically enhanced technology.

Such surveillance allows corporations and governments to access and make use of extremely valuable information. In Who Owns the Future, internet pioneer Jaron Lanier explains:

Troves of dossiers on the private lives and inner beings of ordinary people, collected over digital networks, are packaged into a new private form of elite money … It is a new kind of security the rich trade in, and the value is naturally driven up. It becomes a giant-scale levee inaccessible to ordinary people.

Crucially, this levee is also invisible to most people. Its impacts extend beyond skewing the economic system towards elites to significantly altering the very conception of liberty, because the authority of power is both radically more effective and dispersed.

Foucault’s notion that we live in a panoptic society – one in which the sense of being perpetually watched instils discipline – is now stretched to the point where today’s incessant machinery has been called a “superpanopticon”. The knowledge and information that transhumanist technologies will tend to create could strengthen existing power structures that cement the inherent logic of the system in which the knowledge arises.

This is in part evident in the tendency of algorithms toward race and gender bias, which reflects our already existing social failings. Information technology tends to interpret the world in defined ways: it privileges information that is easily measurable, such as GDP, at the expense of unquantifiable information such as human happiness or well-being. As invasive technologies provide ever more granular data about us, this data may in a very real sense come to define the world – and intangible information may not maintain its rightful place in human affairs.

Systemic dehumanisation

Existing inequities will surely be magnified with the introduction of highly effective psycho-pharmaceuticals, genetic modification, super intelligence, brain-computer interfaces, nanotechnology, robotic prosthetics, and the possible development of life expansion. They are all fundamentally inegalitarian, based on a notion of limitlessness rather than a standard level of physical and mental well-being we’ve come to assume in healthcare. It’s not easy to conceive of a way in which these potentialities can be enjoyed by all.

Sociologist Saskia Sassen talks of the “new logics of expulsion”, that capture “the pathologies of today’s global capitalism”. The expelled include the more than 60,000 migrants who have lost their lives on fatal journeys in the past 20 years, and the victims of the racially skewed profile of the increasing prison population.

In Britain, they include the 30,000 people whose deaths in 2015 were linked to health and social care cuts and the many who perished in the Grenfell Tower fire. Their deaths can be said to have resulted from systematic marginalisation.

Unprecedented acute concentration of wealth happens alongside these expulsions. Advanced economic and technical achievements enable this wealth and the expulsion of surplus groups. At the same time, Sassen writes, they create a kind of nebulous centrelessness as the locus of power:

The oppressed have often risen against their masters. But today the oppressed have mostly been expelled and survive a great distance from their oppressors … The “oppressor” is increasingly a complex system that combines persons, networks, and machines with no obvious centre.

Surplus populations removed from the productive aspects of the social world may rapidly increase in the near future as improvements in AI and robotics potentially result in significant automation unemployment. Large swaths of society may become productively and economically redundant. For historian Yuval Noah Harari “the most important question in 21st-century economics may well be: what should we do with all the superfluous people?”

We would be left with the scenario of a small elite that has an almost total concentration of wealth with access to the most powerfully transformative technologies in world history and a redundant mass of people, no longer suited to the evolutionary environment in which they find themselves and entirely dependent on the benevolence of that elite. The dehumanising treatment of today’s expelled groups shows that prevailing liberal values in developed countries don’t always extend to those who don’t share the same privilege, race, culture or religion.

In an era of radical technological power, the masses may even represent a significant security threat to the elite, which could be used to justify aggressive and authoritarian actions (perhaps enabled further by a culture of surveillance).

In their transhumanist tract, The Proactionary Imperative, Steve Fuller and Veronika Lipinska argue that we are obliged to pursue techno-scientific progress relentlessly, until we achieve our god-like destiny or infinite power – effectively to serve God by becoming God. They unabashedly reveal the incipient violence and destruction such Promethean aims would require: “replacing the natural with the artificial is so key to proactionary strategy … at least as a serious possibility if not a likelihood [it will lead to] the long-term environmental degradation of the Earth.”

The extent of suffering they would be willing to gamble in their cosmic casino is only fully evident when analysing what their project would mean for individual human beings:

A proactionary world would not merely tolerate risk-taking but outright encourage it, as people are provided with legal incentives to speculate with their bio-economic assets. Living riskily would amount to an entrepreneurship of the self … [proactionaries] seek large long-term benefits for survivors of a revolutionary regime that would permit many harms along the way.

Progress on overdrive will require sacrifices.

The economic fragility that humans may soon be faced with as a result of automation unemployment would likely prove extremely useful to proactionary goals. In a society where vast swaths of people are reliant on handouts for survival, market forces would determine that less social security means people will risk more for a lower reward, so “proactionaries would reinvent the welfare state as a vehicle for fostering securitised risk taking” while “the proactionary state would operate like a venture capitalist writ large”.

At the heart of this is the removal of basic rights for “Humanity 1.0”, Fuller’s term for modern, non-augmented human beings, replaced with duties towards the future augmented Humanity 2.0. Hence the very code of our being can and perhaps must be monetised: “personal autonomy should be seen as a politically licensed franchise whereby individuals understand their bodies as akin to plots of land in what might be called the ‘genetic commons’”.

The neoliberal preoccupation with privatisation would so extend to human beings. Indeed, the lifetime of debt that is the reality for most citizens in developed advanced capitalist nations, takes a further step when you are born into debt – simply by being alive “you are invested with capital on which a return is expected”.

Socially moribund masses may thus be forced to serve the technoscientific super-project of Humanity 2.0, which uses the ideology of market fundamentalism in its quest for perpetual progress and maximum productivity. The only significant difference is that the stated aim of godlike capabilities in Humanity 2.0 is overt, as opposed to the undefined end determined by the infinite “progress” of an ever more efficient market logic that we have now.

A new politics

Some transhumanists are beginning to understand that the most serious limitations to what humans can achieve are social and cultural – not technical. However, all too often their reframing of politics falls into the same trap as their techno-centric worldview. They commonly argue the new political poles are not left-right but techno-conservative or techno-progressive (and even techno-libertarian and techno-sceptic. Meanwhile Fuller and Lipinska argue that the new political poles will be up and down instead of left and right: those who want to dominate the skies and became all powerful, and those who want to preserve the Earth and its species-rich diversity. It is a false dichotomy. Preservation of the latter is likely to be necessary for any hope of achieving the former.

Transhumanism and advanced capitalism are two processes which value “progress” and “efficiency” above everything else. The former as a means to power and the latter as a means to profit. Humans become vessels to serve these values. Transhuman possibilities urgently call for a politics with more clearly delineated and explicit humane values to provide a safer environment in which to foster these profound changes. Where we stand on questions of social justice and environmental sustainability has never been more important. Technology doesn’t allow us to escape these questions – it doesn’t permit political neutrality. The contrary is true. It determines that our politics have never been more important. Savulescu is right when he says radical technologies are coming. He is wrong in thinking they will fix our morality. They will reflect it.

To survive the 90-year-long journey between Earth and the far-off planet Homestead II, humans on the ship in the 2016 sci-fi bomb Passengers were cryogenically frozen, suspending them in the throes of youth. The assumption is that thawing will bring their bodies and minds back to their normal, living states, and then life will resume where it left off. It’s wishful thinking: While scientists have figured out how to thaw and unthaw individual cells, whether it’s possible to reanimate life has remained a mystery.

But a new discovery puts them well on their way to finding out.

In a recent article in the journal ACS Nano, researchers reported that they’d successfully frozen zebrafish embryos, thawed them, and brought them back to life. Reanimation efforts on the tiny tropical fish, prized among scientists because their translucent embryos are easy to study, have been ongoing for 60 years, but none have been successful because of issues during the thawing process. This time around, the American team tweaked their defrosting strategy in order to speed it up.

When scientists preserve an embryo using cryogenic freezing, they drain some of its regular fluids, replacing them with an antifreeze-like substance to prevent the formation of damaging ice crystals, which can puncture a cell from the inside out. For the most part, scientists have figured out this process of “vitrification” — making fluids ice-free and thus glass-like — using a cryoprotectant solution of various sugar and alcohol molecules, like glycerol and propylene glycol (the major ingredient in car antifreeze). Previous studies have shown that dropping cryoprotected zebrafish embryos into a liquid nitrogen tank that cools them at 90,000 degrees Celsius per minute to a final temperature of −196 degrees Celsius results in perfectly frozen embryos. The problem is what happens as they are thawing.

“[The] large size of the yolk still impedes rapid cooling and warming, thereby yielding lethal ice crystal formation during cryopreservation,” the researchers write. When the defrosting process is too gradual, sometimes an event called devitrification occurs, in which the liquid “[reverts] from glass to ice.” For these scientists, thawing frozen embryos involved shining a 1064-nm laser pulse on them, which raised their temperature to 1.4 × 107 degrees Celsius per minute, but even this was too slow to create the perfect thaw.

But they finally managed to achieve it by adding a substance to the cryoprotectant solution that would heat up quickly and move the thawing process along faster — namely, tiny bits of metal. Adding gold nanorods, which conducted the laser’s heat efficiently, sped up the warming process so that there was no chance for damaging devitrification to take place.

In this way, zebrafish embryos that had been flash-frozen for a few minutes were rapidly unfrozen, and about 10 percent of those embryos stayed alive and developed for the next 24 hours.

These aren’t survival odds that any freezer-happy human would bank on, but they’re a start — and proof that a developing embryo’s mechanisms can continue after being briefly frozen, at least in a zebrafish. Future research will probably focus on figuring out how to extend the amount of time those embryos can stay frozen before they’re thawed, as well as pinpointing what causes them to die so soon after they’re unfrozen.

It’s too early to say how this research could be applied to long-term human hibernation, but the scientists behind the study are hoping it will lead to a way to freeze the embryos of endangered water-bound species so they can repopulate future lifeless seas. In a way, their objectives aren’t too different from those laid out in Passengers, in which the spacefaring ship was laden with libraries of frozen human embryos waiting for a new habitat to populate.

As cryogenics science hurtles forward, it’s likely that the film’s promise that bodies can be viably frozen and thawed will increasingly seem less like a fantasy and more of a possibility. Whether those defrosted bodies will constitute conscious life, however, will be up to future humans to decide.

EMF take-down of America by Alien ET technology: How far has it gone?

A secret agenda using ultra high-tech Alien ET EMF weaponry has been rolled out to take-down America

Note: This article is written for those who are up to speed on the Secret Space War Program and the Secret Shadow Government (SSG) and if you are not you are probably wasting your time reading this article.
Even those involved in such programs often are allowed to only gain knowledge of a narrow compartmented slice. VT has allowed articles to be presented which attempt to fill that void.

Despite vociferous official denials, it is now known that Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMF) can entrain brain waves, cause electrical conduction irregularities in the heart function, cause sleep irregularities, migraines and cancer without doing any tissue heating.

For many years it has been the official USG position that Electromagnetic frequencies (EMF) can only be harmful if tissue is heated.

This has now been shown in numerous peer reviewed studies to be notably untrue, that in fact EMF can entrain brain waves and can disturb electrical conductance in the heart without heating tissue at all.

I have written prior articles which described the sophisticated Globalist agenda to psychotronically oppress We The People using cell phones and cell phone towers, Wi-Fi, dirty electricity and other forms of EMF including custom targeting by ground stations and satellite. I also listed some countermeasures that are now being used to mitigate the effects.

The weaponization of EMF via Smart-meters via the Smart Grid.

The use of Smart-meters is now beginning to become understood as a sophisticated spy device. Citizens all over America are beginning to organize, to protest about them. But there is even more to these sophisticated spy devices.

There are numerous claims that they cause fires (they are not UL rated and some claim they are technically illegal for home use because of that according to state fire codes).

There are also numerous claims that they cause serious and debilitating health problems like migraine headaches, insomnia, nervousness, and a myriad of strange health problems that appeared suddenly not previously appeared so frequently. Some claim that they cause various kinds of cancer.

And although many of these claims are being made by homeowners who just had a Smart-meter installed, some have been substantiated by well qualified scientists all over the world in various nations.

And there are new peer reviewed research studies which are showing that the EMF levels that Smart-meters radiate and expose homeowners to are strong enough to cause serious health problems for those who have a Smart-meter installed or close by.

Are Smart-meters just another type of SSG soft-kill deployed to tranquilize the populace and make folks sick and prematurely dead over time?

A deeper analysis of the factors behind the implementation of the Smart-meter program suggests that there is massive political power behind its mandated implementation.

This strong political power behind the Smart Grid becomes obvious to any homeowner who tries to get a Smart Meter removed after it has been installed. These Smart-meters are usually installed without customer/homeowner consent; and always without their “informed consent” which is required by case law for medical devices.

And there is now substantial evidence to suggests that Smart-meters are actually functioning as unlicensed, unapproved medical devices that have been deployed without giving the public any serious informed consent of the risks (which are substantial).

Besides this it appears that there have been some very deep, dark secrets at play here because “national security directives” have been invoked behind the true purpose of this “Smart Grid” program.

DARPA has been working on this stuff forever

Looks like the Smart Grid system is high priority and a “national security” mandated system.

Top Officials involved in deploying this Smart Grid program express serious fear when pressed for an explanation of the public safety aspects of this system. Looks like this has been driven by a very powerful Intel related group that is taking orders from somebody. The question is from who or what?

There have been anecdotal unsubstantiated reports by insiders that some such officials feels their very lives are in jeopardy if they disclose what they known and their own personal concerns. Apparently some have actually been threatened with serious ramifications if they disclose what they have been told in secret. Some have allegedly had their lives threatened by US Intel agents.

Some officials have had to sign confidentiality/secrecy agreements and have been told that the Smart Grid system is a top secret sophisticated Intelligence gathering tool needed to prevent nuclear and other forms of terrorism and organized crime.

This is true but there is more that is not being disclosed, that the system has the capability to be utilized as a very sophisticated weapon that involves “no direct touching” of the victim.

Yes, there is now new evidence emerging that the implementation of Smart-meters (and the Smart Grid) is actually a sophisticated weapon of war when one examines its full capabilities.

It is my view based on the level of technological sophistication employed by Smart-meters, they are based on sophisticated Alien ET technology provided through exchange programs.

Just how deeply involved has the USG become involved with Alien ETs and how much of their advanced technology has been gained or back-engineered.

We now know for certain that the US Secret Shadow Government (SSG) has recovered and worked at back-engineering numerous crashed Alien ET anti-gravity craft. We also know for certain that dead Alien ET bodies were recovered; at least one live alien ET was rescued and kept in captivity; and the USG secretly has formed exchange programs based on signed treaties with Alien ETs.

In these Alien ET exchange programs Alien ET super advanced technology has been exchanged for use of human subjects and their biological samples. In one program in particular at the Dulce N.M. Deep Underground Military Base (DUMB), a certain USAF Military contractor is working with Alien ETs on a joint program to hybridize humans and synthesize the human soul and to develop clone replicas of top officials and top politicians. I heard one claim made that the massive immigration, legal and illegal has been mandated to provide cover for these hybrids and some human looking Alien ETs to enter society.

Just how advanced has the implementation of Alien ET technology become inside the Secret Space War Program and does the Smart Grid System employ this technology?

What do we now know for a fact exists because of vetted insider reports now made public? We have reports from vetted insiders that Alien ET anti-gravity craft have been recovered.

If anecdotal insider reports are accurate, hybridizations and cloning has been successful to a point. However if reports are true, attempts to synthesize the human soul so far have been unsuccessful and doomed to failure. Same for the attempts to transfer one “mind” into a clone made to look like them from their own DNA. The clones have short lives and often strange neurological (CNS) glitches.

Some have claimed that hybridization produces a hived psychopath with no soul, but this has not been substantiated.

There are now unsubstantiated reports which I consider valid that all secrecy has unofficially ended because of the new quantum based D-wave inter-dimensional based spy systems. In these systems which have become satellite based, no computer circuit on or off is safe from quantum access. D-waves have been purported to cross through a dimension where distance and time is different than what we normally experience.

From all the leaks coming out it seems apparent that all secrecy is now ending and anything written or spoken is now available to the various largest, most advanced Intel Agencies.

“All the devices we put in place are designed to find where the cavity is located. We know there is one, but we’re trying to find out where,” said Mehdi Tayoubi, president of the HIP Institute, which is heading the ScanPyramids project.

In the 200 years since Napoleon Bonaparte landed in Egypt with a retinue of scholars – who laid the groundwork for modern Egyptology – experts have used science to unlock the secrets of the country’s ancient treasures.

In the 21st century, the scientists have been using electronic devices and chemical testing to date artifacts.

Chemical testing still requires small samples, but advanced techniques coming into use are meant to be non-invasive so as not to damage the ancient relics.

Scotland man snaps photo of UFO

The video has the following description: this is the craziest and most impressive thing I´ve seen on my life, lightning hits a river and causes an explosion, if you aren´t afraid of swimming on a pool when lightning fall now you should.

Lightning Strikes a River, Sparks Explosion?

A video purportedly showing a bolt of lightning striking a river actually shows a controlled explosion by an engineering company.

In July 2017, a video purportedly showing “a bolt of lightning striking a river” went viral on social media: 

Meteorologist Dan Skoff lent credence to the claim when he reposted the video on Facebook, along with the following message:

This is crazy! One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen with lightning. Almost doesn’t look real!

If you aren’t terrified of lightning in a swimming pool, you will be now!

This video, however, does not actually show a bolt of lightning striking a river. When the video is slowed down, it is easy to tell that the “lightning” strike doesn’t come from the sky, but from a wire on the hill. Here’s a screenshot showing the moment of impact (which can be glimpsed at the 7-second mark in the video above):

This video was uploaded to Youtube by Finnish water engineering company Rannikon Merityö in 2012, under the title “Porapaalutusta, osa 3: Räjäytys” (Drilling rig, part 3: Blasting). Although this clip was not accompanied by any additional information, the video was included on the company’s web site on a page about underwater mining and blasting:

TAKE SUBMERGED MINING AND BLASTING WORK TO AN EXPERT

Mining and construction of beaches and underwater rock in Turku archipelago and surroundings. Underwater quarrying lowers the rock surface level in the lake, ocean or other waters. Before the excavation work is started, a mining and blasting plan is planned to ensure that everything is safely accomplished. The rock mining in water is licensed and may require the permission of the regional government agency (AVI). 

WHERE IS UNDERWATER MINING SUITABLE?

Underwater quarrying is used for the refurbishment of beaches and waterways and the creation of sea symbols. In addition, the deepening, construction and maintenance of waterways are carried out in mining and blasting operations. Extraction is carried out by inserting underwater special explosives into the drilling holes, which are immersed in drilled holes in the rock. Customers can be private customers, ports, and marinas.

As several pieces of debris can be seen floating in the river shortly after the explosion, it seems most likely that Rannikon Merityö used a detonation cord to dislodge a stump or a tree from the river. Regardless of the exact reason for this explosion, it’s clear that this video shows the work of a dredging company, not a bolt of lightning. 

Meteorologist Skoff later updated his Facebook post to note that the video did not actually show a bolt of lightning striking a river:

This is crazy! It’s not lightning, BUT instead a detonation cord! There is no flash from the clouds & the bolt just seems to come from the top of the hill. They probably had some explosives detonate under water. Still cool though.

A similar explosion can be seen in the following video showing the removal of the City Mill Dam in the U.S. state of Georgia’s Chattahoochee River. An almost identical “lightning bolt” can be seen flashing across the water at the 1:30 mark:

While we do not advise hopping into an outdoor pool during a raging thunderstorm, we can assure you that should you disregard that advice and lightning strikes during your swim, it may be exceedingly unpleasant — but it won’t look like these videos.

Astronomers Observe Strange Quantum Distortion in Empty Space for the First Time Ever

• Vacuum birefringence has been observed by a team of scientists for the first time ever using the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT).
• The team observed neutron star RX J1856.5-375, which is about 400 light-years from Earth, with just visible light, pushing the limits of existing telescope technology.

A LITTLE LESS STRANGE

Vacuum birefringence is a weird quantum phenomenon that has only ever been observed on an atomic scale. It occurs when a neutron star is surrounded by a magnetic field so intense, it’s given rise to a region in empty space where matter randomly appears and vanishes.

This polarization of light in a vacuum due to strong magnetic fields was first thought to be possible in the 1930s by physicists Werner Heisenberg and Hans Heinrich Euler as a product of the theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED). The theory describes how light and matter interact.

Now, for the first time ever, this strange quantum effect has been observed by a team of scientists from INAF Milan (Italy) and from the University of Zielona Gora (Poland).

Using the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT), a research team led by Roberto Mignani observed neutron star RX J1856.5-375, which is about 400 light-years from Earth.

Neutron stars are rather dim, yet they are 10 times more massive than our sun. As such, they have extremely strong magnetic fields permeating their surface and surroundings.

Vacuums are supposedly empty spaces (according to Einstein and Newton, at least) where light can pass through uninhibited or unchanged. But, according to QED, space is full of virtual particles continually popping in and out of existence. Very strong magnetic fields, like those surrounding neutron stars, can modify such spaces as vacuums.

Using the FORS2 instrument on the VLT, the researchers were able to observe the neutron star with just visible light, pushing the limits of existing telescope technology.

BETTER TELESCOPES

Studying VLT data on the star, the researchers saw linear polarization occurring at a significant degree of around 16%. This is very likely due to vacuum birefringence in the area surrounding RX J1856.5-375.

“The high linear [polarization] that we measured with the VLT can’t be easily explained by our models unless the vacuum birefringence effects predicted by QED are included,” said Mignani.

Given the limited technology used, Mignani believes that future telescopes can discover more about similar strange quantum effects by studying other neutron stars. “[Polarization] measurements with the next generation of telescopes, such as ESO’s European Extremely Large Telescope (EELT), could play a crucial role in testing QED predictions of vacuum birefringence effects around many more neutron stars,” he said.

“This measurement, made for the first time now in visible light, also paves the way to similar easurements to be carried out at X-ray wavelengths,” researcher Kinwah Wu said.

The study was published by the ESO.

De Voyagers: al bijna veertig jaar onderweg naar het onbekende

Geen enkel ruimtevaartuig wist het zo ver te schoppen als Voyager 1 en Voyager 2: de sondes die al bijna 40 jaar op weg zijn naar het onbekende.

Op 20 augustus is het precies 40 jaar geleden dat NASA de ruimtesonde Voyager 2 de lucht in slingerde. En een paar weekjes later, op 5 september, gaan de herinneringen terug naar diezelfde 5 september in 1977, de dag waarop Voyager 1 het luchtruim koos. Al bijna veertig jaar vliegen de ruimtesondes rond. En daarmee zijn het niet alleen de langst werkende ruimtesondes ooit. De ruimtesondes breken ook alle records als het gaat over de afstand die ze tot op heden hebben afgelegd: geen enkel ruimtevaartuig heeft het zo ver geschopt als Voyager 1 en Voyager 2. Eerstgenoemde sonde bevindt zich inmiddels op een slordige 21 miljard kilometer afstand van de aarde. En Voyager 2 is bijna 18 miljard kilometer van ons verwijderd. Op die enorme afstand van de aarde snellen beide sondes met een onvoorstelbare snelheid van zo’n 48.280 kilometer per uur voort, in een omgeving waar nog geen enkele door mensen gebouwde sonde ooit geweest is. Bijna veertig jaar nadat deze baanbrekende missie begon, blikken we terug. En kijken we vooruit. Want de Voyager-missie is nog lang niet voorbij.

Op weg
In 1977 worden Voyager 1 en Voyager 2 op weg gestuurd. De sondes moesten langs de vier buitenste planeten van het zonnestelsel scheren die op dat moment op één lijn stonden. NASA hoopte dat de beide sondes het zo’n vijf jaar vol zouden houden en een beter beeld konden geven van de twee gasreuzen Jupiter en Saturnus en de ijsreuzen Uranus en Neptunus. De sondes gingen op weg en deden in de decennia die volgden de ene na de andere ontdekking. Voyager 1 ontdekte de eerste buitenaardse actieve vulkanen (op Io, de maan van Jupiter) en de eerste buitenaardse bliksemschichten (op Jupiter). Voyager 2 bracht ondertussen als eerste ruimtesonde ooit de ringen van Jupiter, Neptunus en Uranus in beeld. En samen vonden de Voyagers bewijs voor de aanwezigheid van een oceaan op Jupiters maan Europa. Ook ontdekten de sondes samen meer dan 20 maantjes rond de gas- en ijsreuzen die ons zonnestelsel rijk is. In zekere zin maakten de Voyagers ons zo nog nieuwsgieriger naar het verhaal van deze planeten en hun manen. Het mondde uiteindelijk uit in de Galileo-missie (naar Jupiter) en de Cassini-missie (naar Saturnus).

De interstellaire ruimte
Langzaam maar zeker begon wel duidelijk te worden dat de Voyagers meer in hun mars hadden dan het bestuderen van de gas- en ijsreuzen. Deze sondes konden (letterlijk) veel verder gaan. In november 1980 verlaat Voyager 1 Saturnus en zet koers naar een gebied waar nog geen enkel ruimtevaartuig ooit is geweest: de ruimte tussen de sterren. In augustus 1989 zet ook Voyager 2 koers richting de interstellaire ruimte. Het wordt een reis die geduld vereist. Pas in 2012 bereikt Voyager 1 – als eerste ruimtesonde ooit – de interstellaire ruimte. Voyager 2 is er nog altijd niet: de sonde zal de interstellaire ruimte naar verwachting ergens in de komende jaren pas bereiken.

Op deze afbeelding zijn de locaties van Voyager 1 en Voyager 2 in 2005 aangeduid. Op dat moment was Voyager 1 de heliosheath binnengedrongen, dit is het gebied waarin interstellair gas en de zonnewind zich mengen. In 2012 zou Voyager 1 de heliopauze achter zich hebben gelaten en de interstellaire ruimte zijn binnengegaan. Die claim – neergelegd door NASA – werd de eerste jaren regelmatig door onderzoekers in twijfel getrokken. Niet zo heel gek, want we zijn nog nooit in de interstellaire ruimte geweest, dus hoe weet je dan precies dat je er bent? Vervolgonderzoek wijst er echter sterk op dat Voyager 1 in augustus 2012 de interstellaire ruimte heeft bereikt. Overigens wil dat niet zeggen dat Voyager 1 het zonnestelsel verlaten heeft. Sinds de jaren zestig stellen de meeste onderzoekers dat de grens van het zonnestelsel nog voorbij de Oortwolk ligt. In dat gebied begint de zwaartekracht van andere sterren dan onze zon de boel te domineren. Het duurt nog zo’n 300 jaar voordat Voyager 1 de binnenrand van de Oortwolk bereikt en mogelijk zelfs 30.000 jaar om het randje ervan te bereiken. Dus officieel heeft Voyager 1 het zonnestelsel nog niet verlaten. Omdat velen er een andere definitie van zonnestelsel op nahouden (het gebied nabij de zon waarin de planeten zich ophouden) kan er echter wel eens wat verwarring ontstaan. Vandaar dat onderzoekers liever niet stellen dat Voyager 1 het zonnestelsel heeft verlaten, maar spreken van een aanwezigheid in de interstellaire ruimte.

Vanzelfsprekend valt er ook in een gebied waar nog geen enkele ruimtesonde ooit is geweest genoeg te ontdekken. Zo blijkt uit data verzameld door Voyager 1 dat kosmische straling in de interstellaire ruimte veelvuldiger voorkomt dan in de omgeving van de aarde. Het suggereert dat de heliosfeer (het gebied waarin de zonnewind de overheersende stroom van deeltjes is) dienst doet als een soort schild en de planeten in het zonnestelsel beschermt tegen straling.

VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD

Aan boord van de Voyagers bevindt zich een grammofoonopname met daarop beelden en geluiden die een aardig beeld geven van het leven op aarde. De plaat kan gezien worden als een soort tijdcapsule. Maar misschien ook wel als een soort visitekaartje, mochten aliens de Voyagers ooit onderscheppen.

Probeer je het eens voor te stellen
Het is lastig om je een voorstelling te maken van het gebied waarin de Voyagers nu rondzwerven. Het moet er vooral heel eenzaam zijn. De sondes hebben de planeten van ons zonnestelsel inmiddels ver achter zich gelaten. En geen van beide sondes zal de komende 40.000 jaar nog in de buurt van een ster komen. Ze haasten zich door een relatief lege ruimte voort. Hun camera’s zijn – bij een gebrek aan energie en objecten om te fotograferen – al in 1989 (Voyager 2) en 1990 (Voyager 1) uitgeschakeld. “Het is heel donker op de plek waar de Voyagers nu zijn,” vertelt NASA hierover. “Hoewel je met de camera’s nog steeds enkele heldere sterren en planeten zou kunnen zien, kun je die sterren en planeten vanaf de aarde met amateur-telescopen nog beter bekijken.” Er mag dan in de omgeving van de Voyagers weinig te zien zijn: dat betekent niet dat de sondes zich hoeven te vervelen. Ze hebben tal van instrumenten aan boord waarmee ze allerhande metingen kunnen uitvoeren. Zo krijgen we gaandeweg een beter beeld van de omstandigheden in (en op het randje van) de interstellaire ruimte.

Nieuwe ontdekkingen
Maar wat kunnen we na veertig jaar Voyager-missie nog verwachten? Nou, een heleboel. Zo lijkt het een kwestie van tijd voor ook Voyager 2 de interstellaire ruimte bereikt. Tegen die tijd zullen beide Voyagers baden in materie afkomstig van andere sterren. “We kunnen niet zeggen welke ontdekkingen nog op Voyager wachten,” stelt onderzoeker Ed Stone. “Niemand kon alle details die Voyager 1 heeft gezien, voorspellen. Dus we verwachten nog meer verrassingen.”

Het roept natuurlijk een interessante vraag op. Want hoelang gaan de oude Voyagers dit kunstje nog volhouden? Het houdt toch een keertje op, zou je denken. En dat is ook zo. Grootste bedreiging voor beide sondes is een tekort aan energie. Naar verwachting zullen onderzoekers in het volgende decennium het ene na het andere onderzoeksinstrument aan boord van de sondes uit moeten schakelen om energie te besparen. Tegen 2030 zal de koek echt op zijn en het laatste onderzoeksinstrument stilvallen. Maar daarmee is de reis van de Voyagers nog niet over. Zij zullen koers houden en nog lang nadat de mensheid ze al is vergeten met een snelheid van meer dan 48.000 kilometer per uur door de Melkweg vliegen.

Finding a Cause for Scary Situations

While driving and accelerating in his car, a patient in France suddenly had a bizarre sensation. He felt like he was outside his car, looking in at his physical self, which was still at the wheel.

Maya Elzière, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Hôpital Européen in Marseille, France, and co-author of the study, enlisted patients who had experienced a range of issues, from recurrent vertigo and tinnitus to infections in the ear. Among these patients, 14 percent reported out-of-body experiences, compared with only 5 percent of healthy people without vestibular disorders who said the same. Evidence of Giants

The supposed remains of Sa-Nakht, a pharaoh of ancient Egypt, may be the oldest known human giant, a new study finds.

Prior work suggested that the skeleton of the man — who would have stood at up to 6 feet, 1.6 inches (1.987 meters) tall — may have belonged to Sa-Nakht, a pharaoh during the Third Dynasty. Sleeping Dragon

The remains of a 110-million-year-old tank-size dinosaur — so well preserved that a museum preparator said it looks like a statue of a sleeping dragon — show that this fearsome creature was covered in armor and spikes. But despite this natural "chain mail," the dino needed to camouflage itself from potential predators, according to a new study.

Ancient Fidget Spinner?

A 4,000-year-old Mesopotamian artifact that looks just like a fidget spinner and that a museum labeled as a "spinning toy" for 85 years is actually — unexpectedly — an ancient weapon, curators told Live Science.

The artifact dates to between 2000 B.C. and 1800 B.C. and was made in the ancient site of Tell Asmar, located in present-day Iraq. When researchers first published an analysis of the object, in 1932, they suggested it was a plaything, Kiersten Neumann, a curator and research associate at the Oriental Institute, told Live Science in an email. Forgeries Force Closure

An art exhibit in Genoa, Italy, featuring the works of modern painter Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, recently closed three days ahead of schedule, after suspicions arose that many of the paintings were likely forgeries.

Officials confiscated the contested works after Italian art critic Carlo Pepi filed a complaint with the Carabinieri Headquarters for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC), also known as the "art police," The Telegraph reported on July 14. Risky Behavior

Firefighters in Ohio were forced to decapitate a pet boa constrictor last week that had latched its teeth onto a woman's nose and wound its serpentine body around her neck, according to news sources. In the incident ,which occurred on July 27, the woman couldn't pry the 5.5-foot-long (1.6 meters) snake off, so she called 911 at 2 p.m. local time. She told emergency workers that she had taken on two boa constrictors as "rescue snakes" the day before and had 11 snakes total in her home, according to audio of the emergency call. Ancient Fort

A fort that is more than 1,000 years old, dating back to the time of Alfred the Great, has been unearthed in Scotland, more than 200 years after it was thought to have been completely destroyed.

Almost nothing survives of the mysterious Pictish culture, including the name they called themselves. The Romans first mentioned the Picts, which means "painted people," likely because of their distinctive tattoos and war paint. However, relatively few Pictish writings survive, and much of what historians know about the Picts' early history comes from the accounts of Roman speechwriters such as Eumenius. In 1995, an intriguing documentary was broadcast on TV stations across the United States. It was titled Alien Encounters from New Tomorrowland and supposedly was produced with the sole purpose of promoting Disneyworld’s then-new “ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter” attraction in Orlando, Florida.

Throughout the documentary’s forty-minute run-time, the presenter/narrator, Robert Urich, makes numerous declarative statements to the effect that UFOs are one-hundred-percent real and extraterrestrial in origin. Such statements include: “For nearly fifty years, officials have been documenting routine alien encounters here on earth,” “More than one alien craft crashed and was recovered for secret US military research,” and “Military and scientific leaders will soon release nearly a half-century of official documentation of ongoing alien encounters on earth.”

The majority of the documentary is focused on UFOs and extraterrestrials as a factual reality. The ‘ExtraTERRORestrial’ ride itself receives very little screen-time, and seems like an afterthought. The documentary was aired in only a handful of US cities at seemingly random times on selected dates in February and March 1995 with no notice—an incredibly odd marketing strategy considering its purpose was to promote a major theme park attraction for families.

Since its original limited broadcast in 1995, the Disney documentary has become engrained into conspiracy lore, or, perhaps more usefully, we could say that it has become entrenched into what Lorin Cutts terms The UFO Mythological Zone, which he describes as “the gap between fact and belief, what we see and what we want to see, what we experience and how we interpret it.” Cutts observes that “People are forming highly personalized variations of the one core belief—the belief in a UFO reality. All else is up for individual interpretation via the UFO mythological zone.”

Cutts’ theory certainly applies to Disney’s now legendary UFO documentary. Soon after its original broadcast, many in the UFO community quickly began to speculate that it was a form of “soft Disclosure;” a test of public reaction to a possible future announcement of alien contact. In recent years, rumours have swirled online that the documentary was “lost,” or even “banned” by shadowy forces. This is categorically not the case. It was never lost. It was never banned. It was simply never transferred to video or DVD, and it remained in a state of limbo until a few years ago when someone inevitably decided to upload an original TV recording of the documentary to YouTube. It has since received more than a million views online.

Despite there being no truth to rumors of its suppression, the documentary remains something of an oddity, and the justification for its production remains fuzzy to this day, especially in the context of a related project that was produced in the same year as the documentary, also supposedly intended as a marketing tool for Disney’s “ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter” ride. This tie-in project was a major UFO conference held at Disneyworld in January of 1995, a couple of months prior to the broadcast of the documentary. Titled “UFOs: The Reality of the Phenomenon,” this Disney conference has also since passed into The UFO Mythological Zone.

While researching my book, Silver Screen Saucers, I decided to track down the writer/director of the Disney UFO documentary, Andrew Thomas. He told me I was the only person ever to have contacted him about this curious little production, and he was only too happy to talk about it. I also wanted the inside story of the Disney UFO conference, and how it related to the theme park ride. To this end, I interviewed Don Ecker, the man responsible for organizing the conference for Disney. Like Thomas, Ecker told me that, to the best of his recollection, I was the only person ever to have sought an interview with him on this topic.

This two-part article presents the inside story of Disney’s 1995 UFO documentary and conference, as told by the two men most directly responsible for them respectively: Andrew Thomas and Don Ecker. It also provides some limited speculation as to the possible purpose of these two related projects; be warned, though: in doing so, it skirts around the edges of The Mythological Zone, albeit hopefully without losing its footing and slipping into the sludge.

Before we go any further, in the further interests of maintaining balance, I’d like to point the readers’ attention to another article—an excellent two-parter by David Halperin, which also explores the history and assumed purpose of these very same Disney projects. By reading both my article and Halperin’s, you will hopefully get a full and level history of this curious chapter in UFO lore, though you may still be left scratching your head as to precisely why these curious projects ever were funded in the first place.

I interviewed the documentary’s writer/director, Andrew Thomas, in 2011. Thomas told me how he had been selected by Disney for this project based on his background in reality TV, having been the original producer of the phenomenally successful TV show, Cops. “Making things exceptionally real was the line of work that I was in at the time,” he said. Thomas had also worked for Columbia Pictures as head of special marketing on Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Thomas told me that Disney had requested a documentary “about the history of mankind and aliens. Not a film history, but more of a realistic approach… a special about the history of UFO sightings.” Disney’s only stipulation was that “the last five minutes had to focus on the ride.” Thomas confirmed to me that, instead of giving the documentary network time, Disney’s plan from the outset was to “seed it into independent television stations across the country.”

But why did Thomas’ documentary take such a strong stance in favour of UFO/ET reality? He summed-up his approach as follows:

I figured, instead of asking people to question ‘could it be possible?’ to just adopt the point of view that alien visitation has been going on for 50 years, and everybody’s known about it. I thought it fit with the ultra-realistic nature of the ride that we were eventually trying to promote. I did it kind of naively. I said to myself ‘okay, I’m going to believe everything and I’m going to collect all this stuff and construct what would be a documentary if we all just had a consensus that the UFO phenomenon was real…’ We didn’t make up anything, but it certainly surprised the people at Disney.

Thomas told me he wrote the script in just a few hours while flying back from Florida to his home in Los Angeles. “There was nothing to it,” he said, “it just kind of came out, it was easy.” Furthermore, Thomas told me that he conducted the vast majority his research at the National Archives and stressed that, beyond these archival visits, “there was no direct government contact” on the production. “I didn’t get any special access from anybody,” he said.

These statements from Thomas almost completely dismantle the idea that the Disney documentary was anything other than a promo for a theme park ride. However, there were aspects of the Alien Encounters project that even Thomas considered strange. Disney CEO Michael Eisner took a direct interest in the documentary, personally vetting its content and even filming his own introduction for the piece. Thomas mused:

I thought it was really odd because this was kind of a minor marketing project, but Disney put a lot of weight into it. I mean, Eisner doesn’t have to stop walking down the street to pick up a twenty-dollar-bill—it’s not worth his time. But they had him look through this. And he filmed this intro to the show. He had his own film crew take him out to a sound stage and film his own intro, which I thought was just really surprising.

Also surprising to Thomas was Disney’s inexplicable TV scheduling for the documentary, which he described as “completely counter-intuitive” because “it played on independent stations in the afternoon at like 2 o’clock or 3 o’ clock, or some horrible time when no one would be watching it.”

Why was Michael Eisner so personally invested in what, on the surface at least, was a minor TV marketing project? And why the bizarre and “totally counter-intuitive” TV scheduling for the documentary?

Let us for a moment indulge the popular conspiratorial interpretation of events. If powerful UFO-related interests were involved in the documentary—perhaps having recommended Thomas to Disney knowing what he would produce based on his sophisticated viral work on Spielberg’s Close Encounters—then Thomas himself may have been oblivious to this fact. He would have been a pawn in a much larger game. But this interpretation seems incredibly farfetched, and I put no stock at all in the “acclimation” theory. There’s simply no evidence to support it.

However, there is compelling circumstantial evidence for the theory that Hollywood historically has been exploited as a tool for UFO “perception management”—an agenda more subtle and complex than simple acclimation; one relating to psychological warfare, in which controllable, faith-based subcultures are exploited, cultivated and steered towards various intelligence ends, both foreign and domestic, not necessarily even related to UFOs. Anyone who doubts that popular UFO beliefs have been steered and shaped significantly by intelligence operatives for self-serving ends should make time to prove themselves wrong by reading Greg Bishop’s Project Beta and Mark Pilkington’s Mirage Men.

Certainly, it can be said that the content of the Disney documentary served to strongly reinforce ideas that had thus far been sown into the UFO community by disinformation operatives dating back at least to the early-1980s. Was the documentary intended as a furtherance of these covert efforts to encourage certain misguided and exploitable beliefs within the UFO subculture?

The Disney/UFO connection can be traced back to 1953 when the CIA-sponsored Robertson Panel recommended that the US government make efforts to strip UFOs of their “aura of mystery” through the exploitation of mass media, including television and motion pictures. In this context, the panel highlighted Walt Disney Productions as a potential conduit for its propaganda. The panel’s attraction to Disney made sense given the animation giant’s then firmly established working relationship with the US government: not only was Uncle Walt a trusted friend of President Eisenhower’s chief propagandist, C.D. Jackson, in the early-mid-1950s, he also made numerous propaganda shorts for the US military during WWII and later helped produce films promoting Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” policy, as well as the retrospectively hilarious Duck and Cover documentary, which depicted schoolchildren surviving an atomic attack by sheltering under their desks.

That the Robertson Panel highlighted Disney is also significant because the Panel’s recommendation to debunk UFOs through media channels is known to have been acted upon in at least one instance: the CBS TV broadcast of UFOs: Friend, Foe, or Fantasy? a 1966 anti-UFO documentary narrated by Walter Cronkite. In a letter addressed to former Robertson Panel Secretary Frederick C. Durant, Dr Thornton Page confided that he “helped organize the CBS TV show around the Robertson Panel conclusions,” even though this was thirteen years after the Panel had first convened. In light of this case alone, it seems not unreasonable to speculate that the government may at least have attempted to follow through on the Robertson Panel’s Disney recommendation.

There appears to have been a direct connection between Disney, UFOs, and the military in a case involving the famed Oscar-winning Disney animator, Ward Kimball. While speaking at a conference for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in 1979, Kimball claimed that the USAF had approached Walt Disney himself in the mid-1950s, requesting his cooperation on a documentary that would help acclimate the public to extraterrestrial reality. Kimball knew this because, as one of Disney’s most trusted animators, he was directly involved in the project. In exchange for Disney’s cooperation, said Kimball, the USAF would supply the animation giant with real UFO footage for exclusive use in his documentary. According to Kimball, Disney accepted the deal and began work immediately on the USAF project.

While Disney waited patiently for the USAF to provide the UFO footage, his animators (Kimball among them) produced conceptual designs of what an alien might look like. However, the offer of the UFO footage was eventually withdrawn, provoking Kimball himself to challenge the official military liaison for the project–a USAF Colonel who told him that “there was indeed plenty of UFO footage, but that neither [Kimball], nor anyone else was going to get access to it.” The project was abandoned and forgotten by all but the few who had worked on it.

Disney has maintained its close historical ties to officialdom over the decades. In 1994, one year prior to the Alien Encounters documentary, Disney worked closely with the Pentagon during the production of In the Army Now (1994). The Pentagon gave this feature-length Army recruitment advert its full cooperation, providing Disney with expensive military hardware and on-set advice from DOD personnel. Disney has also historically been tied to the US arms industry. Between the years 2000 and 2011, Disney directors-board-member John Bryson simultaneously served as a director of the Boeing Company, one of the world’s largest aerospace and defense contractors (selling dreams with one hand, and missiles with the other).

More bizarrely, the 2009 Disney UFO movie Race to Witch Mountain appears to have received covert assistance from the CIA. In a highly unusual production arrangement, Fickman claims he and his crew were closely assisted by an active employee of the Agency whose advice extended even to designing the film’s onscreen alien language. Fickman’s advisor—whom he secured through “back door channels”—also recommended that certain UFO-themed content be removed from the script and even accompanied Fickman on a private tour of NORAD’s Cheyenne Mountain facility where they chatted with military top brass. “I don’t think there was anything abnormal about what they were doing,” Fickman told me in 2010, “I just think it was that phone calls were being made and doors were sort of opening.”

All of this is very intriguing, no doubt. But, let’s face it, the above examples of Disney/government cooperation prove nothing at all with regards to the 1995 Disney UFO documentary. Frankly, I would be inclined to disregard the Disney documentary entirely as any kind of intelligence-related project if not for the fact that it was tied closely to another, more baffling Disney UFO project…
