De stalen worden bewaard in Las Vegas, meldt The New York Times.
Ralf Blumenthal, onderzoeker voor The New York Times
The New York Times tegenover MSNBC.
Unexplained booms have been one of the most prevalent unexplained phenomena of this year. While mysterious explosions in the sky are nothing new, they’ve been occurring with increasing regularity lately. The latest mystery booms happened this week over Tampa, Florida and was strong enough to shake houses across three different counties. Tampa resident Fred Krauer Jr. told the Tampa Bay Times that his home was rattled by the boom which left a disconcerting silence in its wake:
It sounded like a plane had crashed. I felt it in my feet in the shower. It’s a little unnerving, as with anything with the unknown. If we don’t have the answer for something, your mind starts reaching.
Spokespersons for six different government agencies claimed they were not responsible and had no knowledge whatsoever of the cause of the boom. Northern Florida is home to MacDill Air Force Base, Eglin Air Force Base, Tyndall Air Force Base, the 45th Space Wing, and Kennedy Space Center, so initial speculation centered around military activity in the area. However, MacDill AFB spokesperson Terry Montrose said there are “no records of fighters in the area.” An interesting choice of words – stating only that there were no fighters in the area leaves open the possibility that there could have been other type of aircraft overhead.
Tampa is no stranger to military activity overhead.
What’s more, the Tampa Bay Times reports that a Canadian Air Force spokesperson speaking on behalf of NORAD said that two aircraft were cleared to break the sound barrier over the Gulf of Mexico. All signs point to the likelihood that this was a military exercise of some kind, and the silence of officials in the area indicates it was classified or otherwise hush-hush. Given all of the anomalous aircraft sightings and strange activityspotted at known top secret test sites, could these booms be merely a further sign of recent military aircraft testing? Given that mystery booms pre-date the invention of aircraft, however, there could be more anomalous explanations. Is secretive military testing just a convenient scapegoat for something stranger or darker? Is there such a thing?
The recent announcement by the Pentagon that it ran a secretive UAP/UFO program has hit the UFO community like a wave. The news followed a New York Times article which featured a $20 million-dollar program designed to investigate UFO reports and a 30-second video taken by an F-18 Super Hornet’s gun camera, and features the pilot’s audible reactions to an anomalous object they were tracking. While all this new information raises many questions, the biggest one is how will UFO lore and mythology change as a result?
Tom DeLonge’s To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science, has this latest video posted on its website, alongside testimony from fighter pilots regarding another UFO sighting and gun camera video from 2004.
Suffice it to say, most major news outlets have picked up this story, and various UFO circles are in a tizzy. The excitement and the tension is palpable, but like all such events, we must be cautious. The UFO subculture, that nebulous group of individuals who engage with UFO discourse and debate, have been duped before. Furthermore, the ‘truth’ will mix with the fiction, and out of this relationship, more Ufological mythology will be born.
Thirty years ago, the infamous Majestic 12, or MJ-12 documents surfaced. In a series of books and conference lectures between 1987 and 1989, these documents were touted as being real proof of a governmental cover-up, crashed flying saucers, and even aliens hidden in underground bases. Almost immediately after their release to the broader UFO community and the general public, the documents were identified as elaborate hoaxes and potentially disinformation documents created by the intelligence community. While their validity is no longer in question, as they are definitely fraudulent, the mythology that they generated within UFO circles still exists.
If one dares to venture into the depths of the UFO subculture, questions, conversations and debates still rage on concerning hidden underground military bases in New Mexico, crashed flying discs and the recovery of extraterrestrial bodies. Furthermore, digging deeper, one will find significant connections between the major Ufological players involved in releasing these documents, and the intelligence community.
MJ-12, or a similar group by any other name, became a centrepiece of theorizing by UFOlogists. It established a governing paradigm for many researchers. They gathered snippets of evidence and tried fitting them into this framework.
Only a couple years previously, Paul Bennewitz and his interactions with various intelligence officials with the American government, also focused upon a similar thematic line; secret government bases, alien abductions, cattle mutilations, and a plot to slowly invade the planet via genetic manipulation. These motifs within UFO discourse still exist today, and many buy into them outright. Furthermore, they have become part of the subcultural landscape, taken for granted, mythologized, televised and reprinted ad infinitum as legitimate Ufological theory. Everyone seems to ignore the source of these myths, a government-sponsored campaign cloaked in a noble call to ‘tell the truth’ but used to potentially establish ideology and lore to move the UFO debate and community towards certain realities versus others.
While the MJ-12 and Bennewitz affairs are perhaps the most famous events which highlight known governmental influence upon UFO mythology, there have been other cases of potential meddling.
Michael Swords, in his book, UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry, points to the fact that NICAP, The National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena, had a member by the name of Colonel Joseph Bryan III. He eventually became a board member, and shortly thereafter, became the Board chair. He forced Donald Keyhoe, NICAP’s long-standing director and founder, to retire in 1969 and disbanded the organization. Bryan was a respected Air Force officer; however, he also was a CIA operative who was high up in the intelligence agency’s psychological warfare department.
It may be silly to assume that the CIA was involved in the destruction of NICAP. Most UFO organizations tend to suffer from significant infighting and members with inflated egos, so they need little help in destroying themselves, however, it does show that members of the intelligence world at least play the UFO game.
It is too early to begin ranting about some grand conspiracy concerning this recent release of information from the Pentagon, which may have somehow been motivated by To the Stars Academy. This has not stopped some from doing so, however, such as documentarian and researcher Dr Steven Greer, who was considered to be an ‘insider’ for quite some time now, is clearly on the ‘outs.’
Good while it lasted, I suppose.
Is this a Version 2.0 government-sponsored disinformation campaign similar to MJ-12? Is this a social assessment, a psychological ‘proving ground’ to ascertain the public’s propensity for belief, and methods on how to best dupe them for other, potentially nefarious and down to earth, reasons? Do these ‘advanced aerial threats’ reinforce the ‘extraterrestrial hypothesis’ and shut out other potential theories regarding the UFO question? How will this affect all those individuals within the UFO community who do not consider the UFO phenomenon a threat, but rather a positive interaction with another intelligence? What of all those alien abductees who have allegedly come face to face with this benevolent intelligence? Will this announcement further entrench the UFO subculture in the darkness of the social fringe? Or, will it bring the UFO community out into the light, where the academic and scientific communities will finally accept the potential for strange and supernatural aerial events that cannot be attributed to human engineering?
While that last one is a stretch, these questions are all on the tips of the subcultural tongue.
The fundamental questions we must ask, however, are what narratives are being created by the UFO community, and about the UFO community as a result of this ‘UAPgate.’ What ideology will be generated and reinforced during the next several days and weeks? What lore and mythologies are being created in the wake of this new information? Finally, who in the community is being silenced by this loud gong?
No one can predict the direct mythological and ideological outcomes of this story. That being said, it all hovers around the American government and military, organizations that have not enjoyed the UFO community’s trust over the last several decades. Oddly enough, the direct result of the MJ-12 documents and the Bennewitz affair was basically an open call to cease putting one’s faith in the government, as they were involved in some pretty dubious shenanigans and conspiracies. However, in some strange twist of Ufological irony, many members of the community have total trust in this new information, suddenly putting blind confidence in an archetypal enemy of the UFO subculture.
It is too early to know whether this information is totally open and honest. The UFO community has been tricked before, and as the old saying goes, “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” Will this event shift the entire UFO discourse? Perhaps, for the time being anyway. As one UFO enthusiast put it on Facebook concerning this announcement, “I’m feeling optimistic for a change…”
Perhaps the best approach is with caution, an open-mind, but caution. However, what we can assume is that the cause of this information release, the cast of characters behind this event, all have agendas. They are playing the UFO game, we just don’t know what rules they are playing by. History has taught us that when individuals from the government and the intelligence community play the game, they play to win.
While this story sounds like it might be called “The Empire Strikes Back,” unfortunately the root of this lashing out against robot overlords had little to do with revolution … at least against robot overlords. Over the past month, a security robot hired/rented to protect the puppies and the employees at the San Francisco SPCA has been battered with barbecue sauce, fouled with feces, trapped under a tarp and bumped over by a bully. While the dedicated robot wants to keep working, the SPCA decided to place it on permanent leave. Why did this robot rouse the rowdies in San Francisco?
The program started with good intentions, according to the San Francisco Business Journal. The S.F. SPCA takes up an entire block in the Mission District, an area known for crime, car and building break-ins, drug use and informal encampments for homeless people. Jennifer Scarlett, the S.F. SPCA’s president, thought she had found a way to protect her employees at a low cost. She hired a K5 security robot from Knightscope, changed its name to a more appropriate K9 and put it to work on the SPCA’s perimeter. The K9 had an immediate effect on the grounds:
“We weren’t able to use the sidewalks at all when there’s needles and tents and bikes, so from a walking standpoint I find the robot much easier to navigate than an encampment.”
Is this the future of security?
That comment connecting the security robot to the homeless encampment is the one that started the backlash. As is the case these days, death threats were made towards the robot and it was vandalized and attacked, which is not a smart thing to do since K9/K5 weighed 398-pounds and was equipped with cameras, proximity sensors, wireless signal detectors and alarms. All that for only $6 an hour, which is far less than the $14 minimum wage in San Francisco … inciting more hatred of the robot for taking jobs that those homeless people could do.
Some local residents who encountered the K9 robot took the non-violent route and complained to City Hall about things like the robot blocking sidewalks and scaring dogs. That prompted the Department of Public Works to warn the SPCA that K9 was operating “without a proper approval” and they needed to take it off the sidewalks or face a fine. That worked better than the feces and K9 was laid off.
The robot took it well (another K5 “committed suicide” earlier this year in a fountain in Washington DC) and will probably be reassigned to another security job. Unfortunately for the protesters, even though Scarlett acknowledges the plight of the homeless and unemployed in the Mission District, but will not be hiring a human replacement. In fact, she sees robots coming back eventually.
“In five years we will look back on this and think, ‘We used to take selfies with these because they were so new.’”
Do you agree? Are robots inevitable and on the road to being friendly sidewalk sharers or is this just part of their master takeover plan?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but am I the only one who is not overwhelmed by the new revelations concerning UFOs and the U.S. Government? In fact, I have to say that I’m completely underwhelmed by it all. Now, yes, it is undeniably interesting that there should have been a program, one which was carefully not revealed for years – at least, not to the public and the media. Until now, that is, as a result of the revelations of a few days ago that appeared in the New York Times. See this link.
Yes, all of this demonstrates that there are those within government who have an interest in UFOs, and to the point where they were willing to fund a program to re-address UFOs, decades after the Air Force’s UFO program, Project Blue Book, was shut down (in 1969). But, let’s take a look at what the new revelations really tell us. As we are told, the only reason why the program ever existed in the first place was because Senator Harry Reid (having a deep and personal interest in the UFO phenomenon) pushed and pushed the government to take a new and renewed look at the subject.
As a result of Senator Reid’s actions, yes, the program was created. But, as the New York Times makes it clear to us, the bulk of the money went to, and I quote the newspaper, “an aerospace research company run by a billionaire entrepreneur and longtime friend of Mr. Reid’s, Robert Bigelow…” So, the government was not planning on readdressing the UFO phenomenon until Senator Reid made an approach. And yes, the government finally decided to do something – and what they did was to provide most of the the funding to the aerospace research company of a friend of Reid. But, when it comes to the matter of the overall, annual U.S. Department of Defense budget, that figure was minuscule. If this really was a top secret UFO program, far more money would have been channeled into it, and we would not be hearing about it at all.
I have had people contact me to say that all of this is evidence of secret UFO programs and (as one person put it to me) “the new inheritors of MJ12.” Well, for a start, the MJ12 saga is bullshit and something which kept Ufology busy for not just years but for decades. And where has it led us? Nowhere, that’s where. Now, I don’t dispute the possibility that there could be top secret UFO programs hidden deep in the heart of the government, the military and/or the intelligence community. In fact, I would be very surprised if such things don’t exist.
But, a project that only existed because a senator kept trying to make it happen – followed by the government finally dishing out the money outside of government – does not sound like a top secret program of highly-classified proportions. And certainly not one which had access to alien bodies and crashed UFOs, as a Facebook friend suggested to me -in all seriousness – just a few hours ago. Let’s keep all of this in perspective: government agencies often throw money at outside enterprises and for all sorts of reasons. And, yes, the existence of the program is usually not spoken about. At least, not until it surfaces into the public domain – as was the case this past weekend.
So, yes, I do find the latest news to be slightly intriguing. But, look at how the group came together, look at how the Government largely handed the work outside, and look at the fact that it was all shut down after half a decade. What we see is the kind of thing that goes on all the time in government. What we’re not seeing is evidence of “the U.S. Government’s Top Secret UFO Project.”

Time Traveler Reveals Map of the United States After Catastrophes
Time Traveler Reveals Map of the United States After Catastrophes
Al Bielek was born in 1927. While working for various military contractors, the people who worked with him began to reveal the truth about the US government’s involvement with extraterrestrials and PSYOPS (Psychological Operations) programs. Strange things started to happen to him soon afterwards.
Recruited into the “Montauk Project,” Bielek said he worked his normal day job in California, and then would take a highly classified underground magnetic levitation subway train from Los Angeles to Montauk.
The Montauk Project is an alleged series of secret United States government projects conducted at Camp Hero or Montauk Air Force Station on Montauk, Long Island, for the purpose of developing psychological warfare techniques and exotic research including time travel.
In the 1980's when the time control programs were operational, Al Bielek's duties were to handle the operations of the Mind Control program as well as he participated in some of the time travel experiments.
Both he and Duncan who was one of the Montauk Boys programmers under Al Bielek traveled to Mars on several occasions.
During a mind control/time travel session he got visions of major catastrophes to our planet especially to the United States. His visions have been worked out on a map which shows that in the future large parts of the U.S. will be under water.
Besides the visions of many other futurists of what the United States will look like in the future, probably the most appealing vision came from the American psychic Edgar Cayce called "The Sleeping Prophet" who received a message which was transmitted while he was in a sleep-like trance that the earth will be broken up in many places whereby many portions of the East Coast and West Coast, as well as the central portion of the United States will be under water.
Al Bielek as well as Edgar Cayce both received the messages/visions at the time they were in an altered state of consciousness. Such a state of awareness opens a gate to visual experiences other than normal waking consciousness.
When the New York Timesreported Saturday that the Pentagon had spent several years and $22 million researching the possible existence of UFOs, tinfoil hat believers breathed a sigh of relief. The rest of us were surprised, but accepted the news nonetheless because it’s 2017 and nothing makes sense. All that said, an alien hunter-slash-scientist in California tells Inverse that there is something unnerving about this story, but it’s not the UFOs.
“There are a couple examples of really puzzling phenomenon,” SETI Institute Senior Astronomer Seth Shostak tells Inverse. “I mean, I get it, but there’ve always been puzzling cases. There are always plenty of interesting cases, and they make for great television shows. But this doesn’t mean they involve phenomena we’ve never seen before.”
According to the Times, the Pentagon recently confirmed that it had taken part in a partially declassified program to investigate UFOs, called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP). The project — which was launched primarily at the request of former Nevada Democrat Harry Reid — ran from at least 2007 through 2012, though some involved believe it’s still alive in a less organized form.
Reid had apparently been influenced by his friend Robert Bigelow, a billionaire and aerospace entrepreneur who told CBS’s 60 Minutes back in May that he’s “absolutely convinced” UFOs have visited Earth.
According to Shostak, Bigelow’s obsession with extraterrestrials has gone back much longer.
“I know him a little bit; he’s a nice guy!” Shostak explains. “But he’s thought there’s been evidence of an alien visitation for a very long time, as least as long as I’ve known him, and that’s been about 15 years.”
If Bigelow wanted to spend his own money to fund a real-life X-Files, that’d be one thing. But according to the Times, the $22 million appropriated to AATIP — which came from taxpayer money — went to Bigelow’s company, Bigelow Aerospace. With this cash, Bigelow hired people to construct buildings to house items that came from supposed UFOs and brought on researchers to study people who said they’d encountered extraterrestrial objects.
For Shostak, what’s “a little disturbing” about the ordeal is that Bigelow, who has collaborated with NASA despite having no scientific background, has received so much money from the project.
“[Bigelow] doesn’t need more money,” he explains. “He’s a very likeable guy, but he’s been convinced all along that we’re being ‘visited.’ And it doesn’t mean [aliens are visiting us] just because a person of note thinks it’s true. The thing that’s a little disturbing about this is that it seems a lot of the money for this study went to Bob Bigelow. I think that if you really wanted to investigate this stuff, the thing to do is to give this to scientists or experts in the field that don’t have a dog in the fight.”
While some of the AATIP mission remains classified, at this point, a few things remain true. One, Harry Reid is good at campaigning on behalf of his friends’ pipe dreams. Two, Robert Bigelow is seriously invested in finding aliens among us. And three, we haven’t found proof of any extraterrestrial beings, as badly as we all want that to happen.
“If the aliens were actually visiting us since 1947, when they made that navigation error in New Mexico, you’d have really good evidence,” Shostak says. “It wouldn’t all be in the hands of the government — and not just the government, our government. If the aliens had bothered to visit any other countries, wouldn’t they have evidence? I find it hard to believe that everybody’s covering it up.
“The bottom line is somebody spent 20 million dollars of your tax dollars to look into this and they didn’t come up with anything.”

US fighter pilot about a UFO: “It accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen”
US fighter pilot about a UFO: “It accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen”
Close encounters of pilots are among the most reliable testimonies about the presence of UFOs in our skies, and some of the most incredible accounts of UFO sightings come from pilots who spent thousands of hours in the air.
This is because pilots are highly trained to differentiate and evaluate what they see in their field of work.
Recently, the prestigious newspaper The New York Times published an interview in which the crew of two fighter-bombers F-18 Hornet of the United States Navy recounted a strange chapter that occurred in 2004, in which they saw what seemed to be an unusual flying craft, they could not identify.
Officers David Fravor and Jim Slaight were on a training mission over the Pacific, about 160 kilometers from the coast when they received a radio message on their F / A-18F Super Hornet fighter-bomber.
A USS Princeton cruise officer asked them if the plane carried weapons on board.
“Two CATM-9s,” Fravor responded, referring to referring to dummy missiles that could not be fired.
Clearly, no one expected that in the middle of November 2004 there would be a threat off the coasts of California.
As noted by the New York Times, and as we can see in the video, Fravor recalled the words of the radio operator that came later:
“Well, we have a vector for you.”
Curiously, the USS Princeton had been following a strange contact for two weeks, consisting of what appeared to be several ‘objects’ that suddenly appeared at high altitude, about 24,000 meters, and then launched into the sea, stopping and hovering about six kilometers from the water.
After that, the contacts disappeared from the radar without a clear explanation.
Fravor and Slaight tried to investigate the contact, so they turned towards finding the Unidentified Flying Object.
When the control informed them that they were already in position, they discovered that there was nothing in sight or within reach of the F-18’s radar.
Then, Fravor relates that below, an oval object appeared leaving a trail behind it. The object measured about 12 meters and seemed to fly up and down erratically, without moving in a particular direction.
It had a whitish appearance reminiscent of foam or boiling water, the pilot recalls.
Cautious, the crew of the fighter-bomber began a gentle descent towards the object. But, suddenly, the “thing” began to ascend towards them, so Fravor decided to start a direct descent towards the UFO.
But then, the object abandoned its trajectory.
“It accelerated like nothing I’ve seen,” says Fravor in the interview. As he remembers, he was “quite overwhelmed.”
After losing contact, the USS Princeton gave them a meeting point, called the cap point, in aviation parlance, almost 100 kilometers away.
While in-route, the Princeton radioed again.
Radar had again picked up the strange aircraft once again.
“Sir, you won’t believe it,” the radio operator said, “but that thing is at your cap point.”
According to Fravor, the object had taken less than a minute to travel 100 kilometers.
This raises the question of what type of ‘aircraft’ can outperform an F18, and travel at such speeds as if the laws of aerodynamics had no influence whatsoever over it?
When they reached the point, there was no sign of the UFO, so Fravor and Slaight returned to the aircraft carrier they had left, the USS Nimitz.
According to the pilots, their superiors did not open an investigation to study what happened, but his fellow pilots soon laughed at him when they learned of the strange encounter.
When a colleague asked Fravor what he had seen that day, he replied:
“I have no idea. It had no feathers, wings or rotors and was much faster than our F-18.”
He added: “I want to fly one.”
Does this video, and statement from the pilots suggest the UFO presence is real? And that we are being visited, contacted and monitored by entities, not from Earth? According to millions of people around the globe, this video, in addition to countless other materials is the ultimate proof that Alien spacecraft have been visiting our planet for decades.
The Pentagon spent $ 22 million on a Secret Program to study UFOs
The Pentagon spent $ 22 million on a Secret Program to study UFOs
According to newly declassified materials, the Pentagon spent at least $22 million dollars researching the UFO phenomena in a secret program that existed for at least three years, reports the NY Times.
So, the logical question here is, if UFO’s aren’t real? Why on Earth would anyone in their right mind spend $22 million dollars investigating something that’s not real?
It is believed that from 2008 through 2011, the Pentagon secretly spent a budget of at least $22 million dollars on a program that specifically investigated unidentified flying objects; The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program. This secret program as supposedly shut down in 2012. The secret program was run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagon’s C Ring, deep within the building’s maze, reports the NY Times.
This is the first time that the Pentagon has acknowledged the existence of the secret program, and UFO hunters around the world rejoice as they see this as a sign that UFO disclosure is near.
Elizondo resigned his post in October because of his frustration over the lack of funds and the Pentagon’s attention to his efforts, according to the report.
If UFO’s aren’t real, why has the government spent so much money on studying the phenomenon?
This shows that the Pentagon has had a great interest in UFO’s for many years and that the government has allocated a very large budget in hopes o understanding what UFO’s really are.
The declassified papers also show that the UFO phenomenon is not something new and that the government has been researching it for decades while keeping all information hidden away from the general public.
In the resignation letter that Elizondo sent to Secretary of Defense James Mattis, according to The Time, he stated that the government should take the matter seriously.
“Despite overwhelming evidence at both the classified and unclassified levels, certain individuals in the [Defense] Department remain staunchly opposed to further research on what could be a tactical threat to our pilots, sailors and soldiers, and perhaps even an existential threat to our national security,” Elizondo wrote in a resignation letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, the Post reported.
Elizondo added that “there remains a vital need to ascertain capability and intent of these phenomena for the benefit of the armed forces and the nation.”
We must not forget that the Air Force has looked into the UFO phenomena before. As part of the so-called Project Blue Book program, the Air Force investigated UFO’s between 1947 and 1969 guttering thousands of documents on unidentified aerial vehicles.
In 1947, In 1947, the U.S. Air Force launched Project Sign with the goal of the collecting, collating, evaluating and distributing within the government all the information related to UFO sightings, under the premise that UFOs could be real and due to national security concerns”.
The project determined that while UFO’s appeared to represent actual aircraft, there was not enough data to determine their origin.
Astronauts living aboard the International Space Station may experience bone and muscle loss due to the combined effects of microgravity and radiation, scientists report. The findings have important implications for how NASA engineers plan on mitigating the effects of radiation for upcoming deep-space missions such as a manned trip to Mars.
Credit: Pixabay.
Like muscles, bone is a dynamic tissue which adapts to demand. If there’s frequently increased load, bones will grow bigger to meet this demand. In a weightless environment, however, muscles will atrophy and bones will lose density. What’s more, radiation also seems to play a role in bone density loss but not in muscle atrophy, a recent study funded by NASA informs.
Researchers led by Henry Donahue from Virginia Commonwealth University studied mice whose movements were restricted, thereby simulating microgravity. Another group of mice were left to roam freely while being exposed to radiation of the kind experienced in space.
While the microgravity conditions led to both muscle and bone loss, radiation alone could only produce bone loss.
“Radiation plus microgravity amplifies the negative effect of microgravity on bone, but does not affect muscle loss,” Donahue said in a statement. “It’s as if exposure to radiation itself doesn’t affect bone, but it makes it more sensitive to the negative effects of microgravity.”
Donahue says that loss of bone and muscle experienced by astronauts is similar to what doctors see in aging people. Older people, he said, “fall more, they break their bones more.” In the future, understanding how microgravity impacts human biology might reveal important insight regarding the effects aging has on muscle and bone.
Sadly, this is more bad news for manned space flight. Previously, scientists at the University of California, Irvine, found mice exposed to space radiation experienced cognitive decline, accompanied by changes in the structure and integrity of brain nerve cells and the synapses.
Charles Limoli, a scientist at the University of California, Irvine, previously found similar kinds of brain damage in cancer patients who had received high-dose, photon-based radiation treatments. The oncologist says that astronauts would require months and months worth of exposure to deep space radiation for brain damage to occur. Considering the shortest one-way trip to Mars lasts 260 days, that’s cause for worry.
“Exposure to these particles can lead to a range of potential central nervous system complications that can occur during and persist long after actual space travel – such as various performance decrements, memory deficits, anxiety, depression and impaired decision-making,” said Limoli.

No escaping radiation
Now, we know that radiation will also incur an additional bone loss in astronauts. Deep space radiation is an unsolved problem, as no amount of shielding can block off highly energetic space rays from penetrating a spaceship.
The effects of weightlessness are also problematic. Besides incurring significant muscle and bone loss after only a couple of weeks spent in space, microgravity also impairs vision byliterally deforming the eyeball. Other, more subtle effects, include genes that turn on and off (with unclear consequences at this point) and longer telomeres (which slow down chromosome deterioration).
To counter the bone and muscle loss, since 2008, astronauts aboard the ISS have been using the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED), which allows them to simulate free-weight exercises in normal gravity. Each astronaut has an allocated exercise time of two hours a day in space. But despite exercise, it still takes months of rehabilitation to adjust when returning to Earth after a typical six-month space mission.

The Search for Life on Mars Should Go Underground, Scientists Say
The Search for Life on Mars Should Go Underground, Scientists Say

The jammed front wheel of NASA’s Spirit rover dug this trench inside Mars’ Gusev Crater in 2008. Spirit’s observations allowed researchers to determine that the white material is evidence of an ancient hydrothermal system on the Red Planet.

The search for signs of life on Mars needs a bit of a rethink, scientists argue in a new study.
A popular strategy calls for investigating spots where waterborne sediment accumulated long ago, like the ancient lake-bed environment that NASA's Curiosity rover discovered inside Mars' 96-mile-wide (154 kilometers) Gale Crater.
Here on Earth, such ancient habitats have preserved bountiful evidence of ancient life — but that doesn't mean the same will hold true on the Red Planet, according to the study team, which was led by Joseph Michalski, an associate professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at The University of Hong Kong. [The Search for Life on Mars (A Photo Timeline)]
"Mars is not Earth," the researchers wrote in the study, a "Perspectives" piece that was published online today (Dec. 18) in the journal Nature Geoscience.
"We must recognize that our entire perspective on how life has evolved and how evidence of life is preserved is colored by the fact that we live on a planet where photosynthesis evolved," they said. "Even if photosynthesis did evolve on Mars, questions remain as to how successful surface life would have been, and whether evidence of that life could have been captured in the sedimentary record."
Life first got a foothold on Earth roughly 4 billion years ago, but it really began taking off about 1.5 billion years later, after cyanobacteria evolved oxygen-generating photosynthesis. The oxygen produced by these microbes led to the formation of an atmospheric ozone layer, which protected surface life from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
This evolutionary innovation therefore opened up vast amounts of livable space, allowing organisms to colonize surface and near-surface environments on land and at sea, scientists say.
The timing here is important, according to the study team. Mars was once relatively warm and wet —much warmer and wetter than it is today, anyway. But by 4 billion years ago, Mars' interior had cooled enough that its magnetic dynamo shut down, and the Red Planet lost its global magnetic field. (Earth still has a magnetic field, because our planet is 10 times more massive than Mars and therefore hasn't cooled nearly as much.)
This magnetic field had served to shield Mars' atmosphere from the solar wind, the stream of charged particles flowing from the sun. Its loss led to the stripping of this once-thick atmosphere and the transformation of the planet to the cold desert it is today — a process that was largely complete by about 3.7 billion years ago.
So, for surface life to really get going — and therefore have a good chance of being preserved in lake-bed deposits — photosynthesis would probably have had to evolve at least 1 billion years earlier on Mars than it did on Earth.
Michalski and his colleagues don't think that's a great bet. So they advocate for prioritizing spots where subsurface life may have once teemed on Mars — environments such as ancient hydrothermal systems, which may have been life's cradle here on Earth.
And you wouldn't necessarily have to dig deep to find such systems; NASA's Spirit rover stumbled onto one inside Mars' Gusev Crater back in 2008 when its wonky wheel scraped away some surface dirt.
Such reasoning could soon have real-world applications: In 2020, NASA plans to launch a life-hunting Mars rover that will collect and store rock samples for eventual return to Earth.
Study co-author Jack Mustard, a geology professor at Brown University in Rhode Island, said he'd like the 2020 rover to investigate exposed "mineralized fracture zones" on the Red Planet.
"These would be places where there was fluid flow in the crust, and where you get mixing between different fluids from different sources that have potentially different concentrations of important elements, as well as dissolved hydrogen, for example," Mustard told Space.com. (Hydrogen is a possible energy source for microbes.) "Those would be cool."
The main goal of the new study is "to get the larger scientific community thinking along these lines as we move toward continuing to search for potential evidence" of life and its precursor molecules, he added.
Our first interstellar visitor, 'Oumuamua, has captured the attention of scientists around the globe. In one of the latest studies, a team has found that the object has a natural layer of protection against the Sun's cosmic rays, and it could be covering an icy core.
A MYSTERIOUS VISITOR
The recent sighting of interstellar asteroid ‘Oumuamua (formally 1I/2017 U1) has scientists stirring with questions. Shaped like a cigar, the mysterious traveling space rock is the first interstellar visitor scientists have observed in our solar system, and while it is most likely of natural origin, there are some who, at least initially, suggested it could have been intentionally crafted.
Now, in the most recent finding about the object, researchers have noted that ‘Oumuamua has a layer of “organic sunscreen” that protects it from exposure to the Sun. The research has been published in the journal Nature.
To find this out about our first interstellar visitor, a team of researchers, led by astronomer Alan Fitzsimmons, performed spectroscopic observations using equipment at two different facilities: the ACAM auxillary port imager and spectrograph on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) on La Palma and the X-shooter spectrograph on the European Southern Observatory’s 8.2m Very Large Telescope (VLT).
The team found that the object has a lack of surface ice and that its spectroscopic characteristics are comparable to the organically rich surfaces discovered in the outer solar system. They claim this is in line with predictions that long-term cosmic ray exposure gave ‘Oumuamua an insulating mantle.
QUESTIONS OF ORIGIN
The researchers believe ‘Oumuamua’s outer “layer” is approximately .5 meters (1.6 feet) thick and that it could be preventing an icy inner core from vaporizing under the heat of the Sun. This ice is of particular interest because it could signal the possibility for life.
Though our understanding of our solar system’s origin and the origins of life in the universe are ever-improving, there’s still much we don’t know.
Researchers believe that comets and asteroids were ejected into interstellar space when our solar system formed and evolved, so assuming that this happens in other planetary systems, too, anything that we learn about our first interstellar visitor could improve our understanding of both our own solar system and others throughout the universe.
A group of people in Swansea are hoping to unravel the mystery of UFO sightings in Wales.
The question over whether aliens exist has caused debate for centuries.
Conspiracy theorists have claimed for years that aliens have been visiting Earth, but many doubt their claims.
Swansea UFO Network, however, strongly believe in UFOs and alien abduction, and have evidence which they feel backs up their beliefs.
The group were founded in 2015, and since then Emlyn Williams, Steve Drewson and Mike Maunder have been researching various cases reported to them from members of the public.
They have so far had 752 reported sightings in south Wales.
According to their research, hotspots where you are most likely to see a UFO are Townhill, Gower and Pentyrch, although the group have had reports from all over south Wales.
They hold monthly conferences as well as regular night time Sky-Watches around South Wales.
Emlyn Williams
“I first believed in UFOs around the age of 15 when I picked up a book about the subject,” said Emlyn, who is from Wanarlwydd.
“I enjoy collecting cases, I started doing it before the group was put together. I’ve always wanted to set up a group. We don’t get paid for this, we do a lot of travelling and work long hours.
“People don’t get ridiculed for going to church yet there is more evidence that ETs exist than God. Where’s the evidence that God exists?
“People will send us a family photo and they will notice an object in the background that wasn’t there at the time, we get it blown up and there’s a picture of a craft behind,” the 53 year-old added.
Steve, aged 64, from Gower, said he was open minded about everything.
Steve Drewson
“I have always believed in UFOs, people who dismiss it altogether are ignorant of the subject.
“Religious people don’t get ridiculed for their beliefs, I don’t see why we should.
“A lot of people say if they do exist then why haven’t we got any good photographs but the reason for that is that most of the time they move too fast.”
He said people came to their monthly meetings to share their stories as they knew they weren’t going to be laughed at.
“You do have to see it first to believe it so I understand why some may not believe. We just want to get the truth out of this but I doubt we will in our lifetime.”
Mike, aged 54, from Gower, said the group researched thoroughly into every case.
Mike Maunder
“If people see a sighting they will come to us and we will research into it. We check flight radars, satellites, drones and military operations. That allows us to write off certain cases.
“We will then meet with witnesses to get primary source information. We have met so many people and you can tell if someone is telling the truth because they will tell you time and time again their story and they won’t change it.
“A lot of sightings do seem to have objects appearing out of nowhere and disappearing quickly. It doesn’t matter what time of the day it is, but most sighting’s happen in the night as that’s when lights seem to attract the eye more.”
The researchers said people would often lie about sightings in order to get attention.
“There’s a lot of conspiracy theories out there which makes it hard and hides the truth, the internet is the prime example of this,” said Steve.
“A lot of people are posting videos and pictures but no one takes it serious, with CGI you can fake so much stuff and make it look real.
“A lot of people who are telling the truth don’t want to give their names so you can tell they are not doing it for attention.
“People lie because they just want a bit of fame.”
The Welsh X-Files
A suspected UFO sighting over Swansea
A 'blow up' of an object seen flying soundlessly in the sky at Clase, Swansea, near the DVLA on April 20 by a couple walking their dog.
The trio have also had several cases of alien abduction reported to them.
Emlyn, who also works full-time as a caricaturist, has had a few cases where people have been taken on board a craft.
The abducted family
“We know quite a lot of people who have been abducted. In the 90s a family from Newport were abducted,” said Emlyn.
“They were driving across the old Severn bridge and they saw a light and a circle shape object in the sky.
“The father can remember being in a craft and he was naked with beings who had control over him.
“The next thing he knew he was driving the car and it was light, the daughters were dazed and stunned and they were ill afterwards. The family have never wanted to be named.
“We also find that a lot of sightings are by schools. There’s definitely a link with children and schools.”
The Night of the Triangles
“This occurred on the evening of January 19, 1983, when dozens of witnesses in the Swansea and Port Talbot area (over 60 recorded so far), saw huge black triangular-shaped craft, some the size of jumbo jets, some the size of a family car, hovering silently just over roof-tops, two of which moved slowly and silently over Swansea Bay, and one possibly causing a power failure in Bishopston,” said Steve.
“We call it The Night of the Triangles and we are tracking down many of the witnesses, and filming interviews which have been put on SUFON’s YouTube channel. Two witnesses were CID inspectors making a house call in the Trallwn area of Swansea who saw a huge craft ‘about the size of a football pitch’ moving over the valley and heading towards the coast.”
“This was one of the biggest UFO sightings ever and it’s been underestimated in my opinion. All of these people can’t be lying, none of them knew each other, they had nothing to gain from this,” the 64-year-old added.
The refinery incident
“Another sighting that evening, from a family at home in Skewen , was of a gigantic triangle - which moved from Kilvey Hill to Llandarcy in an instant, and which then hovered over the BP oil refinery. The size was truly huge, covering much of the refinery!”
The vanishing cigar
“Another large and very strange case was of a massive black cigar-shaped object which hovered silently over the newly-built Singleton Hospital in Swansea, on a November evening in 1965, causing the lights on all the floors to flash on and off. A green line appeared in the middle of the object, which spread right around it, and the whole thing just disappeared in an instant in front of witnesses’ eyes.”
Anyone with experiences of their own, can get in touch, identities will be kept confidential if requested. Call 07954 806402 or 07399990985, or email swanseaufonet@yahoo.com. SUFON also has a Facebook page - Swansea UFO Network.

Navy pilot recalls encounter with UFO: 'I think it was not from this world'
Navy pilot recalls encounter with UFO: 'I think it was not from this world'
By KELLY MCCARTHY
Details about Pentagon's secret UFO hunters
Retired Cmdr. David Fravor spent 18 years as a Navy pilot, but nothing prepared him for what he witnessed during a routine training mission on Nov. 14, 2004.
"I can tell you, I think it was not from this world," Fravor told ABC News. "I'm not crazy, haven't been drinking. It was — after 18 years of flying, I've seen pretty much about everything that I can see in that realm, and this was nothing close."
Obtained by ABC News
An unidentified flying object shown in a photo first obtained by the New York Times.
Fravor's stunning retelling of his encounter off the California coast with what appeared to be a 40-foot-long wingless object that flew at incredible speeds in an erratic pattern comes as thePentagon revealed the existence of a secret programto investigate sightings ofUFOs.
The program was shut down in 2012 because of other budget priorities, according to the Pentagon.
"I have never seen anything in my life, in my history of flying that has the performance, the acceleration — keep in mind this thing had no wings," Fravor said.
He recalled flying his F/A-18 fighter on a training mission on a beautiful Southern California day 13 years ago when things started to get strange.
Controllers on one of the Navy ships on the water below reported objects that were dropping out of the sky from 80,000 feet and going "straight back up," Fravor said.
Obtained by ABC News
Former Navy Commander David Fravor told ABC News about his encounter with what he believed was a UFO.
"So we're thinking, OK, this is going to be interesting," he said.
As they were looking around for the object that appeared on the radar, another aviator spotted something. "I was like, 'Dude, do you see that?'" Fravor recalled saying.
“We look down, we see a white disturbance in the water, like something's under the surface, and the waves are breaking over, but we see next to it, and it's flying around, and it's this little white Tic Tac, and it's moving around — left, right, forward, back, just random," he said.
The object didn't display the rotor wash typical of a helicopter or jet wash from a plane, he said.
The planes flew lower to investigate the object, which started to mirror their movements before disappearing, Fravor said. "As we start to cut across, it rapidly accelerates, climbs past our altitude and disappears," Fravor recalled.
"When it started to near us, as we started to descend towards it coming up, it was flying in the elongated way, so it's [like] a Tic Tac, with the roundish end going in the forward direction ... I don't know what it is. I don't know what I saw. I just know it was really impressive, really fast, and I would like to fly it," he said.
The disturbance in the water also vanished with object, he remembered.
"So we turned around — we couldn't have been more than about a couple miles away — and there's no white water at all in the ocean," Fravor said. "It's just blue."
At that point, they decided to return to complete the training exercise when they were told the object or something similar reappeared.
"And the controller comes up and says, 'Sir, you're not going to believe this. That thing is at your half point,' which is our hold point," Fravor added. "And I'm like, 'Oh, great.'"
Another plane that launched from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz around the same time had its radar jammed and was able to pick up the object on an infrared channel.
"He gets close enough to see a couple of objects come out of the bottom, and then all of a sudden it takes off and goes right off the side of the screen and, like, takes off," Fravor said.
He recalled that the speed of the object, which he said had no exhaust trail in infrared scanning, was stunning.
"No aircraft that we know of can fly at those speeds, maneuver like that and looks like that," ABC News contributor and former Marine Col. Stephen Ganyard said.
Fravor said there is no rational explanation for what they saw that day.
"I don't know if it was alien life, but I will say that in an infinite universe, with multiple galaxies that we know of, that if we're the only planet with life, it's a pretty lonely universe."
There was no further investigation into the incident, he said.
"You know, you see a lot of interesting things," Fravor said. "But to show up on something that's a 40-foot-long white Tic Tac with no wings that can move, really, in any random direction that it wants and go from hovering over the ocean to mirroring us to accelerating to the point where it just disappears — like, poof, then it was gone."
The Pentagon is seen in an aerial view. (Charles Dharapak/AP)
Just before leaving his Defense Department job two months ago, intelligence officer Luis Elizondo quietly arranged to secure the release of three of the most unusual videos in the Pentagon’s secret vaults: raw footage from encounters between fighter jets and “anomalous aerial vehicles” — military jargon for UFOs.
The videos, all taken from cockpit cameras, show pilots struggling to lock their radars on oval-shaped vessels that, on screen, look vaguely like giant flying Tic Tacs. The strange aircraft — no claims are made about their possible origins or makeup — appear to hover briefly before sprinting away at speeds that elicit gasps and shouts from the pilots.
Elizondo, in an internal Pentagon memo requesting that the videos be cleared for public viewing, argued that the images could help educate pilots and improve aviation safety. But in interviews, he said his ultimate intention was to shed light on a little-known program Elizondo himself ran for seven years: a low-key Defense Department operation to collect and analyze reported UFO sightings.

The existence of the program, known as the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, was confirmed officially for the first time Saturday by a Pentagon spokesman. The acknowledgment came in response to media inquiries, which were generated in part by a start-up company Elizondo has joined since retirement. The private company specializes in promoting UFO research for scientific and entertainment purposes.
Current and former Pentagon officials confirm that the Pentagon program has been in existence since 2007 and was formed for the purpose of collecting and analyzing a wide range of “anomalous aerospace threats” ranging from advanced aircraft fielded by traditional U.S. adversaries to commercial drones to possible alien encounters. It is a rare instance of ongoing government investigations into a UFO phenomenon that was the subject of multiple official inquiries in the 1950s and 1960s.
Spending for the program totaled at least $22 million, according to former Pentagon officials and documents seen by The Washington Post, but the funding officially ended in 2012. “It was determined that there were other, higher priority issues that merited funding and it was in the best interest of the DOD to make a change,” Pentagon spokesman Tom Crosson explained in a statement.
But officials familiar with the initiative say the collection effort continued as recently as last month. The program operated jointly out of the Pentagon and, at least for a time, an underground complex in Las Vegas managed by Bigelow Aerospace, a defense contractor that builds modules for space stations. It generated at least one report, a 490-page volume that describes alleged UFO sightings in the United States and numerous foreign countries over multiple decades.
Neither the Pentagon nor any of the program’s managers have claimed conclusive proof of extraterrestrial visitors, but Elizondo, citing accounts and data collected by his office over a decade, argues that the videos and other evidence failed to generate the kind of high-level attention he believes is warranted. As part of his decision to leave the Pentagon, he not only sought the release of videos but also penned a letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis complaining that a potential security threat was being ignored.
“Despite overwhelming evidence at both the classified and unclassified levels, certain individuals in the [Defense] Department remain staunchly opposed to further research on what could be a tactical threat to our pilots, sailors and soldiers, and perhaps even an existential threat to our national security,” Elizondo said in the letter, a copy of which was provided to The Post.
The first public revelations of the program came in a video conference aired in October by To the Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences, the firm Elizondo joined as a consultant after retiring from his Pentagon job. The New York Times and Politico reported the existence of the program on their websites Saturday. The Washington Post conducted several confidential interviews over two months with Elizondo and Christopher Mellon, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence who also is an officer of the private firm.
Documents provided by the former officials included letters of support by former Senate majority leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), a key backer of the initiative who helped secure funding for the program and sought to ensure a high degree of secrecy. Elizondo said knowledge of the program was limited, even within the Pentagon itself. He said the program had multiple enemies at senior levels of the department, from officials who were either skeptical or ideologically opposed to AATIP’s mission.
“I was honored to serve at the DOD and took my mission of exploring unexplained aerial phenomena quite seriously,” Elizondo said. “In the end, however, I couldn’t carry out that mission, because the department — which was understandably overstretched — couldn’t give it the resources that the mounting evidence deserved.”
It is difficult to draw conclusions about the nature of the unidentified vessels from the videos alone. Experts generally urged caution, explaining that reported UFO sightings often turn out of have innocuous explanations.
A retired Navy pilot contacted by The Post who was involved in a 2004 encounter depicted in one of the videos confirmed that the images accurately reflected his recollection of the events. The pilot would only speak on the condition of anonymity.
Elizondo, a 22-year veteran of the department who has held top security clearance and worked on secret counterintelligence missions, said he chose to join the private venture because he believed it was the best way to continue the work he was unable to complete as a government employee.
“I left to find an environment where investigating these phenomena is priority number one,” he said.
Here’s a natural phenomenon you might never have imagined. That is, the sun actually sets more slowly around the time of a solstice.
Peter Lowenstein in Mutare, Zimbabwe captured this beautiful sunset on December 16, 2017, a few days before the December solstice – his summer solstice.
Here’s a natural phenomenon you might never have imagined. That is, the sun actually sets more slowly around the time of a solstice. The slowest sunsets (and sunrises) occur at or near the solstices. The fastest sunsets (and sunrises) occur at or near the equinoxes. This is true whether you live in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere. And, by the way, when we say sunset here, we’re talking about the actual number of minutes it takes for the body of the sun to sink below the western horizon. Follow the links below to learn more:

When is the solstice?
In 2017, the Northern Hemisphere’s winter solstice (Southern Hemisphere’s summer solstice) will fall on December 21 at 16:28 UTC.
In the United States, that translates to December 21 at 11:28 a.m Eastern Time, 10:28 a.m. Central Time, 9:28 a.m. Mountain Time, 8:28 a.m. Pacific Time, 7:28 a.m. Alaskan Time and 6:28 a.m. Hawaiian Time.
Equinoxes and solstices, via Geosync
Why does the sun set so slowly around the solstice?
At the December (or June) solstice, the sun rises and sets farthest south (or north) of due east and due west. The farther the sun sets from due west along the horizon, the shallower the angle of the setting sun. That means a longer duration for sunset at the solstices.
Meanwhile, at an equinox, the sun rises due east and sets due west. That means – on the day of an equinox – the setting sun hits the horizon at its steepest possible angle.
The sunset duration varies by latitude, but let’s just consider one latitude, 40o north, the latitude Denver or Philadelphia in the United States, or Beijing in China. At that latitude, on the day of solstice, the sun sets in about 3 and 1/4 minutes.
On the other hand, at 40o north latitude, the equinox sun sets in roughly 2 and 3/4 minutes.
At more northerly temperate latitudes, the sunset duration is greater; and at latitudes closer to the equator, the sunset duration is less. Near the Arctic Circle (65o north latitude), the duration of a solstice sunset lasts about 15 minutes; at the equator (0o latitude), the solstice sun takes a little over 2 and 1/4 minutes to set. Regardless of latitude, however, the duration of sunset is always longest at or near the solstices.
Actually, the sunset and sunrise are a tad bit longer on the December solstice than they are on the June solstice. That’s because the sun is closer to Earth in December than it is in June. Therefore, the sun’s disk looms a bit larger in our sky in December. Additionally, the closer December sun moves eastward upon the ecliptic at a faster clip, helping to retard the December solstice sunset (and sunrise) even more. For instance, at 50o north latitude, the winter solstice sunset (sunrise) lasts about 4 minutes and 18 seconds, or about 8 seconds longer than the sunset (sunrise) on the summer solstice.
Bottom line: The slowest sunsets of the year are happening now, around the time of the June solstice.

Dat onthult de Amerikaanse krant The New York Times.
De uitgaven stonden verstopt in de begroting, zo stelt The New York Times.
Contracts obtained by The Times show a congressional appropriation of just under $22 million beginning in late 2008 through 2011. The money was used for management of the program, research and assessments of the threat posed by the objects.
The truth is out there — and American taxpayers have paid at least $22 million seeking it.
That’s how much the Pentagon’s real-life Mulders and Scullys spent from 2008 to 2012 in search of alien visitors to planet Earth, news reports said Saturday.
Kepler 90-i
Kepler 90-i draait in ongeveer 14,5 dagen om haar zon.
In 2009 werd de Keplertelescoop de ruimte in gelanceerd, al die tijd speurt die naar exoplaneten. Dat zijn planeten die draaien om andere sterren dan de zon. Het bestaan van deze planeten is voornamelijk afgeleid van indirecte waarnemingen en daarop gebaseerde berekeningen. NASA is zo tevreden over het werk van de ruimtetelescoop dat ze in 2014, een jaar nadat zijn taak er officieel opzat, een nieuwe reeks onderzoeken met de Kepler startten. Toen de missie begon, wisten wetenschappers niet hoeveel exoplaneten er zijn, maar intussen werd duidelijk dat ze vaker voorkomen dan gedacht en dat elke ster er minstens één heeft. }
