MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Je kan ook hun site bekijken onder www.mufon.com. Ze geven een maandelijks tijdschrift uit, namelijk The MUFON UFO-Journal. Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

Is this the REAL TRUTH about UFOs? Shock theory on where they actually come from

UFOs are REAL but are not what you thought they were, according to a shock new theory.

All unidentified flying objects seen over the past 70 years were secret Government experimental craft, according to an expert in the unexplained who researched the subject.

Author Mark Pilkington said agencies like the CIA in the USA were behind a huge double bluff, and were happy the public believed they were alien craft as it took the heat off the top-secret projects that were really going on.

The British author claims the strange craft sighted around the world really do exist – but they are not aliens.

Flying saucers and unidentified aircraft are actually secret technology being developed mostly by the US, he claims.

Mr Pilkington claimed a shadowy organisation he dubbed “mirage men” were behind the global double bluff, Dailystar.co.uk reports.

He has produced a new documentary of the same name he boasted exposes the truth behind UFOs.

He claimed the secrecy all started with the Roswell UFO mystery of July 1947.

In the early 1950s the US military was testing a lot of new technologies and it was convenient to disguise them as UFOs.

    Mark Pilkington

Roswell has been at the heart of the UFO scene since in July 1947 the military sensationally announced in a press release it had found the remains of a crashed flying saucer in the desert nearby.

But the following day it retracted the statement, saying it was in fact a damaged US Air Force air balloon.

Witnesses later came forward to say there had been alien bodies within the "crashed craft", which along with the wreckage were then taken to a mysterious top-secret military base.

There have been claims and counter claims, including that the bodies were crash test dummies and it had been a top-secret balloon spying on the Russians.

All the confusion means it is one of the world's biggest conspiracy theories to this day.

Mr Pilkington claims Roswell is one of the “most famous examples” of the work of the mirage men.

UFO TRUTH? Flying saucers many not be flown by aliens after all.

He told Sputnik: "In the early 1950s the US military was testing a lot of new technologies and it was convenient to disguise them as UFOs.

    "It was a double bluff."

Mr Pilkington added the US Air Force found people were more easily accepting of rumours about UFOs and aliens than any other explanation of the secret aircraft.

Mr Pilkington is not the first researcher to propose that some UFOs are secret spy craft, but he appears to be the first to suggest they all are.

The footage of the launch looked spectacular across the night sky with a luminous blue trail.

Twitter user Melanie Dramos said: “Saw a God damn UFO in Hollywood guys, what?”

Another Twitter user CRO said: “We are not alone.”

Kevin Chen tweeted the SpaceX boss: “@elonmusk you should probably clarify that the 'UFO' in California is your rocket.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the “mysterious lights in the sky" was from the Vandenberg launch.

En even later: “Het waren zeker weten aliens.”

Strange Hauntings and Supernatural Encounters at Death Valley

Sprawled out over 3,000 square miles of Eastern California near the border with Nevada, in the United States, is the arid moonscape of Death Valley. With some of the highest land temperatures ever recorded on earth, this is a searing, parched, and forbidding land, a place that is at times seemingly as inhospitable and as some far away lifeless planet, and one well deserving of the name “Death Valley.” It a hostile environment, in a world unto its own, that one would not imagine to be inhabited by anything at all, let alone ghosts, but Death Valley certainly has its share of strange stories of the paranormal.

Many of the tales of ghostly occurrences in Death Valley revolve around certain places lying out in these badlands that have a dark history of death, and one of these is a long abandoned ghost town out in the middle of nowhere. In the early 1900s, this area of California was in the middle of a gold rush, with droves of miners from all over pouring through the unforgiving desert landscape on mad dash towards their dreams of gold and riches beyond their wildest dreams. To cater to these miners there were scattered camps built out in the harsh environment, and some of these evolved into small towns. One of these was the mining camp of Skidoo, which started as a humble hodgepodge of tents and shacks, but which by the height of its prosperity in 1907 had bloomed into a town of 700, complete with its own bank, saloon, general store, school, newspaper, and brothel.

    Death Valley

In 1908 there was a deputy in town by the name of Joe Simson, also called “Hooch” due to his notorious and shameless consumption of alcohol. The story goes that he one day got hopelessly drunk and ordered a bank teller named Jim Arnold to hand over $20 for unclear reasons. At some point his gun went off, supposedly because he felt offended by Jim’s attitude, and killed the teller. Joe was soon arrested, but as he sat in jail he was forcefully rounded up by the enraged townsfolk, who had formed a roiling vigilante lynch mob, and hung the criminal up from a telephone pole, where they left his dead body swinging in the wind.

Apparently, after they finally took the body down and buried it a reporter from LA came through and they exhumed the corpse to hang up once again so that he could take a photo. One gruesome addition to the story and further violation of the corpse is that a local doctor wanted to test the body for any signs of syphilis, and rather than simply take a blood sample he had the whole head cut off to test that. Although Joe Simpson is long quite dead, he seems to have never really left Skidoo. It is reported that every year on the anniversary of the shooting a phantom gunshot can be heard to crack out over the dry desert air, followed by the disembodied shouting of a spectral mob, and Joe’s headless ghost is also said to roam about at night, especially near the location of the town’s cemetery. Although like most ghost towns in Death Valley Skidoo has crumbled to dusty abandoned ruins and deserted roads, it still brings in curiosity seekers and paranormal investigators hoping to see some sign of ghostly activity.

By far the most famous of Death Valley’s supposedly haunted hotels is the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel, located right out in the sun scorched wasteland at the tiny speck of a town called Death Valley Junction, which was once called Amargosa. The quaint little hotel is notable for its improbable location out in one of the harshest environments on earth, for being featured in the David Lynch film Lost Highway, and also for its alleged intense paranormal activity. The hotel itself was built by the Pacific Borax Mining Company in the 1920s, as a part of the burgeoning mining community there, and there was also established the Death Valley Railroad, which operated from Ryan, California to Death Valley Junction. The settlement of Amargosa began to boom, and became a sort of hub for the other outlying mining communities in the area, spurring the construction of the hotel. Originally called Corkhill Hall, the Spanish Colonial style building was envisioned as a hotel, theater, recreation hall, and office building all rolled into one to serve the steadily growing population.

The Amargosa Opera House and Hotel

In 1927 the mining company moved its headquarters, closed the railway line, and left the town to fend for itself, which it did by eking out an existence as a tourist destination. In 1967, an artist, singer, dancer, and actress by the name of Marta Becket and her husband came across the town after going there to seek repairs for a flat tire they had suffered out on the highway during a tour of the country. She soon became rather enamored of the historical architecture of the town, especially its Corkhill Hall, which her and her husband would end up renting and renaming the Amargosa Opera House. Considering that there were few customers to come and see her shows, Becket began painting audiences on the walls, made up of all manner of colorful figures, as well as a sprawling mural on the ceiling, and the theater began to turn into quite the curiosity. Becket has owned and operated the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel ever since.

More than this colorful history the hotel is more famous for being incredibly haunted, indeed often popping up on lists of the most haunted hotels in the country. There are several different apparitions and ghost infested sections of the hotel. One area that seems to experience some of the most intense activity is an area that was once used as miners’ quarters, as well as a hospital and morgue, called “spooky hollow.” Here visitors and staff alike report phantom smells and the presence of the ghostly apparitions of miners, still wearing their old fashioned attire and shambling about in the murk. Another notorious haunt is a building at the rear of the hotel that is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a little girl who drowned in the pool there. In the vicinity of this building can allegedly be heard a disembodied girl’s voice giggling, or conversely crying, and objects are seen to move on their own.

The opera house is also said to be haunted, with Becket saying that she has long had her performances interrupted by the appearance of a spectral cat, and the ghostly apparition of her former partner, Tom Willet is sometimes spotted sitting in one of the theater’s seats. Odd noises and whispering voices when no one is around, as well as shadows dancing on the stage are also common. The hotel’s dining room apparently has spectral dinner parties with laughter and the clinking of glasses from invisible guests, as well as the high pitched voice of a woman talking.

Several of the rooms of the hotel are said to have persistent paranormal activity as well. In Room 9 guests have reported having their arms or feet held down as they sleep, the doors open and close on their own, and the creepy laughter of a child also sometimes materializes here. Room 24 is supposedly inhabited by the ghost of a girl who drowned in the bathtub, and she is known to leave mysterious wet footprints and to cry at night, as well as to turn the shower or faucet on or off. More sinister is room 32, which according to lore was the scene of a murder and in which there dwells a purportedly angry, malevolent presence known for pushing, shoving, and pervading the air with an unbearable sense of dread and foreboding. Other general strangeness reported from around the hotel and its grounds are phantom screams from nowhere, the sound of children’s footsteps running up stairs or down halls, roving cold spots, and even sightings of full entities in period clothing. There is also a phantom hitchhiker said to hand out along the nearby road and unlock vehicle doors to let himself in.

Another supposedly haunted hotel in Death Valley is the Furnace Creek Inn, also built by the borax mining company in its heyday, and which managed to remain open and popular even after the company pulled out of the area. The hotel is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a chef named James Marquez, who worked there from 1959 to 1973. Although he did not actually die at the hotel, his ghost is still said to sometimes show up for work, wandering around the kitchen and dining halls and startling guests and staff.

There are other haunted buildings in Death Valley as well, including a place that has come to be known as Scotty’s Castle. This mansion was built in 1922 as an opulent vacation home for the actor Walter Scott, who lived there with his beloved dog until he passed away in 1954. Both Scott and his dog were buried in the nearby foothills and it seems that they have never really left their dream home. The most widely reported strange phenomena here are the sounds of footsteps when no one is there, as well as the disembodied panting or barking of a dog and the feeling of having a dog brush up against one’s legs.

    Scotty’s Castle, Death Valley

The spectral figure of Scott is often seen sitting in the fireplace room or standing on the grand staircase, where he will gaze at visitors before vanishing, and there are other reports of other less definable apparitions. It is also said that visitors are plagued by sudden panic attacks or inexplicable despair, as well as an itching, tingling sensation that persists until they leave the premises. Perhaps Scott does not like trespassers? The surrounding property itself is said to be prowled by a “satanic” looking humanoid creature with horns on its head that can be seen stalking about and peering out of the wilderness.

There is another unrelated story told by Scott’s friend Bill Keyes in the Dec. 21, 1907 issue of the The Bullfrog Miner. Keyes claimed that he had been out prospecting for gold near the town of Rhyolite when he stopped at a well-known desert oasis called “Tule Holes” to load up on water and camp out for the night. During the night he reported that he had heard all manner of eerie noises coming from the dark such as moaning and other less identifiable sounds, and he also spotted strange orbs of light bobbing about out in the desert, their light the only illumination out in the pitch black. Strangest of all, he reported that when he had finally gotten to sleep he had awoken to find that he was 500 feet away from his campsite, and that there were marks in the earth that suggested he had been dragged through the desert.

In more modern times there is the report of a bizarre encounter that was posted on Reddit and is really hard to classify. The witness claims that he was out dirt bike riding in the desert during an adventure trip to Death Valley in the summer of 2015 while on leave from being stationed in Africa in the Army. He says that he was trying to challenge himself out there in the hottest place on Earth at the hottest time of the year, and that the temperature at the time was 120 degrees, meaning that he had not seen anyone else out there all day. On this day he had been heading towards a place called Ubehebe Crater, and had only seen one car pass going the other way, and when evening came he stopped halfway between there and RaceTrack Playa to camp for the night.

    Death Valley

He described the area as being very remote, only accessible through a small, unmaintained gravel road and dotted with desert scrub. During the night, the silence was allegedly broken by the unmistakable sound of children’s laughter and talking, which was startling as this had been the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere out in one of the most hazardous environments on earth. The witness estimated that they were perhaps 50 yards away, and he decided to call out to them. When he did, the laughter and talking briefly stopped before starting again. Now sure that what he was hearing was children playing around, the witness got his flashlight and headed out to investigate. He soon found what he was looking for in the form of two small children who were described as “walking, kind of wandering, looking lost, sounding lost.” Thinking that these children were perhaps in trouble, he called out to them again, and describes what happened next thus:

They stopped. They looked in my direction, but they were looking past me. In my direction, but not at me. Like they heard me but I wasn’t even there. I was illuminating them with a very bright flashlight. They should have been covering their faces but they were just scanning, like they were looking for me and just didn’t see me.
They turned back, kept walking, and I just watched them not sure of what to do. Their noises and their images faded into the distance. I just sat there. I didn’t know what to think or what to do. It was just so bizarre. After a while I laid back down, and just relaxed until it started raining at about 5:30AM. That’s when I packed up in the darkness and continued with my adventure into the morning.
So that’s what I saw. I saw children in Death Valley, over a hundred miles from freaking ANYTHING! Just walking, talking, wandering, then vanishing. Oddly enough it didn’t freak me out at the moment. I was more confused than anything. That’s why I couldn’t make a decision on what to do in that moment. Now, looking back, it’s freaky.

More bizarre still is a report relayed to me by a reader in relation to an article I wrote on Skinwalkers. The witness told me that when he was out on a hike in Death Valley he had paused to take in the sunset, which had been drawing near. He then said that he had noticed a figure off in the distance standing there in the desolate landscape looking as if they were enjoying the setting sun as well. It seemed to be a man dressed in what appeared to be some sort of Native America clothing, although he was not close enough to be sure. It was a bit odd, but nothing truly bizarre. At least not yet.

As the witness watched, he says that the mysterious figure began to walk across the desert, backlit by the deepening hues of the sunset painted sky, but then something changed. The figure, which had been bipedal, began to lope along on all fours, still looking like a man trying to mimic a quadrupedal animal, but very fast. The stranger picked up speed and its movements became smoother, more natural as it ran off, allegedly until the point that when it finally ran away it was described as being more like a coyote or wolf before disappearing into the desert. Skin walker or not, whatever he saw it is a strange account to be sure.

Why does this sprawling badlands of dust, dirt, and oppressive heat draw to itself so many stories of ghosts and phantoms? Is it some quality of the land itself? Does some power reside here that pulls in and imprisons these spirits? Is it just the bleak surroundings and the stifling, relentless heat that conspire to trick and disorient the mind? Whatever the reasons may or may not be, Death Valley seems to be a place imbued with mysteries both natural and supernatural, its landscape at once beautiful, lethal, and at times paranormal.

Incredible Sky Spectacle Over California Seen By Many People

Yesterday many people in California witnessed a bright object in the sky with a very bright wide beam of light shining back from the path of the object as seen by a resident of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. (89010).

People wonder whether it was a missile launch off along the OC Coast, California on December 22, 2017 or could it have been something else?

Here are some witness reports that have been submitted to the Mutual UFO Network.

    Los Angeles, CA:
Riding in car and noticed an object leaving contrails. Suddenly contrails widened and then a spiraling object shot out a white circular light. There were 2 bright lights in sky and one object aimed a bright light at the other bright object. Contrail became a huge white cloud formed and remained visible for a long time and didn't move for a while. (89013).

    Diamond BA, CA :
Wife called me outside, I saw the tail end of bright white-lighted object moving quickly in a southern direction leaving a clouded trail that seemed to glow white. Sun was down and moon not very bright at time of sighting. (89011).

    San Diego, CA:
(Witness 1) - I was unloading groceries from my car at my parents house when I went back outside and looked up a super bright ball of light producing an aura that made the night sky look like the sun was rising in the cone shaped aura I then yelled for my wife who witnesses it with me I then we proceeded to run down the street to keep it in sight as it was descending after the orb was out of sight the effect of the aura remained I knew exactly what I was seeing as much as it scared me I felt excited and in awe. (89016)

    Banning, CA:
Outside smoking a cigarette saw white cloud at night two large lights moving away at steady speed, went to street to have a full view then saw two objects that moved away at a steady speed but in different directions. (89012).

    San Diego, CA:
(Witness 2) - I was in my home when family called and told me to go outside. It was extremely well lit. I thought it was a meteor, but it was too well lit and had a large tail. It had a slightly curved path with a smaller object launching off. (89009).

Indeed, it was spectacular to see and frightening to some. That incredible light show was caused by a SpaceX rocket launch out of Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, CA.

Note: In the first video you see an unknown bright object flying towards the SpaceX!

NASA has released more than 2,500 images of Mars, and I can’t stop staring

No seriously, these images are so beautiful it’s actually hard to not look at them for a few minutes straight.

The red planet has changed the way we think of Earth-like planets. In decades of research, we have drastically altered our view about Mars, as we have learned that our neighboring planet was once very similar to Earth, with ocean,s lakes, rivers, and an atmosphere. Altogether, Mars looked like Earth billions of years ago.

Today, only glimpses of it former beauty remain, but as NASA’s rovers and spacecraft continue exploring the surface of the red planet, the more we learn about it.

Despite the fact that we call it the red planet, Mars has shown us that its a treasure trove of alien colors.

Now, thanks to the HiRISE camera onboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter—MRO—we can explore the red planet like ever before.

More than 2500 images have recently been published by NASA that show Mars as never before. Its a planet that comes alive, it has strange alien shapes covering its surface, and its colors make it look as if it were Picasso’s masterpiece.

Mars is without a doubt an abstract piece of art, combining elements that make it a very unique planet, despite the fact that it was once much similar to Earth.

For over 10 years has the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment: HiRISE

Contributed to our understanding of Mars, as it has snapped images in such detail that scientists were able to investigate the red planet’s features at the scale of a few feet. This has allowed experts to look at Mars from an entirely different point of view.

Visit the HiRISE website’s planetary data system releases to see the rest of the photos, because we were obviously too lazy to post all +2,500 images here

What Does $22 Million Buy in UFO Research?

    NEW YORK SKIES 12-21-2017

In light of the Dec. 16 bombshell disclosure articles by the New York TimesPolitico and the Washington Postregarding the Pentagon’s Special Access Unit that is researching UFOs, a.k.a. Advanced Aviation Threats, my first thought is that it’s wonderful the Department of Defense has finally admitted that they been collecting data on UFOs for some time.

Is this THE news that the UFO community has been waiting for? Yes for most of the community. But the hardliners say “No!” They want to drink from a fire hose of information. They want a captured UFO craft presented on camera. They want the truth about Roswell and a shopping list of other questions to be answered.

Yet this disclosure is just what the world needed. We needed major newspapers to do a serious story about what the government has actually been doing. And we needed that story to start a national and global media conversation on the topic. This is what we got!

I watched with amusement as TV news commentators, who are used to making fun of the topic, struggled to ask deep questions and discuss the topic intelligently.

The other thing we needed was for a U.S. government organization like the Pentagon to admit they have been doing serious research into UFO events for years. So now the conversation has started, and let’s hope it’s positive and educational.

On another aspect, after the stories broke I heard a lot of people moaning about the wisdom of spending $22 million for UFO research. Isn’t that the Defense Department’s job, to study possible threats of all kinds and explore defensive remedies?

As a former staffer for an aerospace contractor, I decided to look at what our tax dollars probably purchased. First, a $22 million contract is modest in defense contracting terms. If I was tasked to do a budget and proposed staffing for a project like this, what follows is how the cost might break down.

The subcontract given to Bigelow Aerospace was for $22 million over five years. That amounts to an annual payout of $4.4 million per year. And that breaks down to a monthly billable budget of $366,666.67.

Corporate management and contracts management would take about 10 percent off the top to deal with the task of doing business, or about $36,666.67.

Down at the project management and personnel management level, I would expect another 5.5 percent to be given to management overhead, or about $18,333.33.

At the research and technical level I would expect the staffing of five Ph.D. scientists. This would account for another $62,500, or about 17.05 percent of the monthly budget.

The scientists would need a support team of eight staff engineers, with a budget of $66,660 per month, or about 18.18 percent.

To support the scientists and engineers, there would be a multilevel staff of technicians, administrators and research support personnel, perhaps 18 altogether, at a monthly budget of $90,000, or about 24.55 percent.

Of course, researching all these exotic UFO things requires physical overhead: special work facilities, utilities, IT services and of course a sizable physical and IT security support infrastructure. Let’s say the facilities overhead would ring in at $91,666.67, or another 25 percent of the monthly budget. The budget balances with a few dollars to spare.

My proposed budget projection is just an estimate using reasonable industry labor and burden rates. The staffing and budget are not unrealistic given the overall size of the contract. The question you must be asking yourself is. Was the money well spent?

New York Times reporter Ralph Blumenthal was interviewed on MSNBC on Monday, Dec. 18, and stated that the research was looking at “unknown compounds.” Digging back into the original New York Times article it indicated that Bigelow Aerospace in Las Vegas had specialized facilities “for the storage of metal alloys and other materials that Mr. Elizondo and program contractors said had been recovered from unidentified aerial phenomena.”

I’d say that’s money was well spent! Now if they would just share some more of the cool stuff it with the rest of us.

If you have a UFO sighting to report, use one of the two national database services: NUFORC.org or MUFON.com. Both services respect confidentiality.

X-Files creator reacts to those bombshell UFO reports

Image result for x files i want to believe

    The X-Files
creator Chris Carter was directing the finale of the veteran sci-fi drama’s upcoming season when The New York Times published its startling scoop on Sunday that read like something straight out of his show: The government recently had a five-year secret program investigating UFOs. Moreover, some of those involved in the program who were interviewed are fairly convinced extraterrestrial life has visited Earth (“there is very compelling evidence that we may not be alone,” as one former Pentagon official put it). Plus, there was a video (below) released of an unidentifiable object sighting that was backed up by interviews with U.S. Navy pilots. And like the cliffhanger of a proper serialized sci-fi mystery, the reports stopped just shy of saying anything conclusive on the key question of whether intelligent extraterrestrial life exists.

Carter, who has been rather knee-deep in this subject matter for quite some time, wasn’t exactly surprised by the headlines. Below the writer-producer took a break from his directorial duties to chat exclusively with EW.com about this new truth which is now out there.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Obviously there were government UFO studies in the past, like Project Blue Book, which ended in 1970. But this must be surreal for you — after 25 years of telling an ongoing fictional story about a group within the government that secretly investigates UFOs … to find out there’s a group within the government that’s been secretly investigating UFOs.

CHRIS CARTER: Right, yeah, there have been projects before — Project Blue Book was a real thing. So while you call [the show’s basis] fiction, it wasn’t science fiction. Now that this story has come out, it is some validation. But I still say it’s being treated like it’s tabloid news.

You think news organizations aren’t taking the revelations as seriously as they deserve?

One of the problems is that until UFOs become IFOs [Identified Flying Objects], so to speak, people are going to take it all with some level of suspicion.

Still, the Times story was probably the closest I’ve seen a credible journalistic organization tiptoe up to saying “hey, aliens are real” without actually doing that. What were your thoughts reading the reports?

Well, when you see the Defense Department has a secret program that’s funded to the tune of $22 million dollars by politicians that are supposed to represent our public interest, and doing it in secret, you gotta report on these things. And when you have videotape of pilots looking at things that are undeniably unidentifiable, you have to report that as news.

You’ve always presented the show as entertainment but along the way did you ever hear of things backchannel that credibly suggested there might be some reality to UFO reports?

Yes. I visited the Pentagon several years ago and it was clear something else was going on there. I met with somebody whose job was part of a group that was roughly in the same area as described as the fifth floor of the C Ring [where the recent UFO project was run]. Their job is to think about the future and where the U.S. will be in the future, what its interests will be, and what they’ll need to defend — and everything had to do with space and off-planet. Without them actually saying “aliens,” there was a suggestion that they were more than earthbound researchers.

On this subject there are always two questions, right? Does intelligent extraterrestrial life exist? And if they do exist, have they ever visited Earth? What’s your take?

I’m a skeptic by nature. I’ve never seen a UFO. I’ve never seen an alien. But I’ve talked to way too many people I consider honest and credible who have. I just spoke to somebody in the last couple months who has seen [UFOs] twice in Mexico. And he says they move too fast and they are too otherworldly to call aircraft of this world.

I suppose another question moving forward is: Are we now caught up to speed on what the government knows about UFOs? Or is there more come beyond these reports?

The New York Times piece hinted that they actually have recovered materials. So when those facts might spill out, we might get material confirmation there’s something going on. Until that time, until we have credible scientists telling us this material is otherworldly, I think short of aliens visiting us, that will be the next revelation.

How would people react I wonder? I suspect a large percentage still wouldn’t believe it without a UFO landing in Central Park.

Yes. Imagine the impact on religion. On belief. You can throw so many things out. Certainly our anthropocentric view of the world.

You frequently use real-life news footage and headlines in the show. Will any of this make it into the new season?

This revelation is coming a bit late for this season. But this is something that’s been part of the series from the beginning. And in the last event series [in 2016] and in this one we touch on many things directly that are now being reported as news.

Do you mean there are things within last season and the new one that are part of these current reports that you had previously heard about?

Yes. I’ve attended conferences. People would consider them to be conspiracy-minded folk. But there’s idea that there’s a secret space program — which is another thing the Times piece hinted at — that NASA and this guy Robert Bigalow are working on space systems that might take people into outer space. Now why those programs are secret and are being pursued is of great interest to me and we touch on it this season. But I still think our first contact with something extra-planetary and microscopic and perhaps even lethal. Bioterrorism is something no one talks about when people talk about terrorism and that’s also something we dive into this season.

The X-Files returns to Fox for 10 new episodes starting Jan. 3.

CANADA HAS BEEN INTERESTED IN UFOS FOR 50 YEARS

    Photo: The canadian Press
Drawing of a ufo, which would have overflown the Falcon lake, Manitoba, in 1967.

The United States are not the only ones to pay attention to the unidentified flying objects. Between the end of the Second world War and the mid-1990s, the government of Canada has made consistent efforts to identify and investigate the reports made by the Canadians.

A New York Times article revealing the existence of a program of the u.s. department of Defense devoted to ufos, which would have ended in 2012, is making a lot of noise in the last few days. However, plunging into the archives of the canadian government, we see that, over the years, the interest of Ottawa for the unidentified flying objects was not less great.

Formally, the ministries of national Defence and of Transport, the royal Canadian mounted police (RCMP) and the national research Council of Canada are all busy or surveys or reports related to the appearance of ufos at one time or another between 1947 and 1995.

According to the influential ufologist canadian Chris Rutkowski, Canada cooperates with the United States in this area for decades, and it is likely that this collaboration continues still today.

    Decades of analysis

The government of Canada has begun to collect information on unidentified flying objects in 1947. At this time, many Canadians who have the final world conflict in memory and a possible cold war in the head continue to turn their eyes to the sky, fearing an attack. The RCMP and the ministry of Defence will receive several reports from citizens saying they saw a ufo.

In 1952, the canadian government established project Second Story, which has the objective to analyse the evidence related to the appearance of flying saucers. The minutes of the first meetingof the committee responsible for this project indicates that ” the frequency and persistence of the sightings [of ufos] tend to cast doubt on the theory of hallucinations “. It adds further that greater efforts must be made to obtain the data in an organized manner and proceed to the investigation and analysis required.

In the same year, the american army launches the project Blue Book, which is expected to be completed in 1969. Over the years, its managers will be more than 12 600 reports, of which 701 remain unexplained.

At the end of the 1960s, the national research Council of Canada (NRC), which is the main research arm of the canadian government, becomes the drop point of the observation reports of ufos from the ministry of Defence, ministry of Transport and the RCMP. The NRC stopped collecting records in 1995.

    More than 1000 reports

Since the mid-1990s, the government appears to have left the civilian sector care to list and analyze ufo reports. The ufologist Chris Rutkowski receives each year a handful of reports from various government agencies. “I suspect that there are other reports of ufos that were kept secret, but I don’t have access to it for the moment,” says the astronomer by training, who lives in Winnipeg.

Thanks to these reports made by the government and to the data compiled by enthusiasts of ufology of the four corners of Canada, Mr. Rutkowski product since 1989 an annual report accounting for all events reported in the country.

In 2016, 1131 events were reported, of which 38.5 % from Quebec. After they have been analyzed by a network of researchers, astronomers and specialists of the aviation, only 4 % of these reports remain unexplained, which represents the lowest percentage recorded in 28 years.

“Even if the vast majority of ufo reports are explainable, there is always a small percentage of events that remain unexplained. These reports do not mean that Canada has been visited by extraterrestrials, but they indicate that observations can not be explained and require further scientific studies, ” said Mr. Rutkowski.

What people believe to be a ufo, for example, can be the light of a plane, a drone or a satellite that enters the earth’s atmosphere. “The ufo reports are not all as mysterious as you might think,” insists the researcher. Contrary to some ufologists, this author of many books devoted to ufos remains prudent, therefore, without closing doors.

“Some people say that I am skeptical and, at the opposite, some say I am too a believer. I think it is important to keep an open mind, ” he said. My training in astronomy and he told me that there may be life elsewhere in the universe and that she could come to visit us. But we do not yet have the evidence. “

    Canada and the ufos

    • 1947 government agencies, including the department of national Defence, are beginning to amass information on ufos.
    • 1952 The canadian government established project Second Story in order to analyze the testimonies reminiscent of the flying saucers.
    • 1959-1960 The Canada and the United States to introduce a joint system of reporting on ufos.
    • 1968 The national research Council of Canada (NRC), becomes the point of fall of the reports on the observation of ufos.
    • 1995 The NRC cease to collect reports related to ufos, leaving place to the civilian sector.

You’re Not Crazy if You Believe in UFOs. Let’s Discuss in Scientific Terms.

On December 16, the New York Times published two stories that read almost like science fiction. For at least five years, the Defense Department housed a $22-million, clandestine program to investigate UFOs. Military pilots had sent in reports of objects they observed that moved in unfamiliar ways; the mission of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, as it was called, was to investigate those claims to see if there was truly something otherworldly behind those sightings.

It’s unclear just how many reports pilots had filed to the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, but people who have come forward about the program have made it clear that there would have been a lot more reports filed if it hadn’t been for one thing: stigma. “The sightings were not often reported up the military’s chain of command, [former senator Harry Reid] said, because service members were afraid they would be laughed at or stigmatized,” one Times piece reads.

American culture is steeped in depictions of what would happen if sophisticated aliens visited Earth, from E.T. to Arrival to Independence Day. Some are more hackneyed than others; some are downright terrifying. But outside the clear genres of fiction, most conversations about UFOs happen online, and with varying degrees of vehemence.

Let’s face it — believing in the paranormal has become shorthand for crazy.

“60 years of folklorization and Hollywood production have, in the minds of the general public, definitely trivialized the subject. It has become a ‘standard’ consumer product,” Jean-Christophe Doré, the technical manager for UFO-SCIENCE, the French association that aims to scientifically evaluate aspects of UFO phenomena, tells Futurism.

But to some, that association might be changing. Luis Elizondo, the military official formerly in charge of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, told The New York Times’ Daily podcast:

I think we’re entering an era of actual evidence. We’ve reached a moment of critical mass of credible witnesses, and these are witnesses that are in charge of multi-million-dollar weapon platforms with, in some cases, the highest level of security clearances and in some cases they’re trained observers. When these individuals are trying to report something, ‘Hey I saw this when I was flying,’ that can be turned around and people say ‘hey look if you’re crazy, there goes your flight status.’ Or all of a sudden commander so-and-so in charge of this very elite fighter wing will no longer be taken seriously. In fact, people are going to start to judge whether or not maybe our friend here might not be a little crazy, or maybe some loose screws. That’s always a threat to these people’s career. And let’s face it, these people have to pay their taxes, they have to pay their mortgages, they have families, they’re putting their kids through school. And frankly, they’re just really good patriots and they want to do the right thing. And that stigma is pretty powerful. It stops a lot of people from reporting something maybe they would normally report.

Government officials are no longer hiding their belief that extraterrestrials might be out there. Could this be a turning point for once-fringe communities and open doors for those looking to bring scientific rigor to the quest to understand UFOs?

    Logical Fallacy

Most phenomena thought to be the doings of extraterrestrials are eventually explained. Take Project Blue Book, for example, the U.S. government’s program to investigate unidentified flying objects that ran from 1947 until 1969. Of the more than 12,000 reported sightings, investigators found out the real (not paranormal) story for all but 700 or so. That’s a pretty good percentage, says Joe Nickell, senior research fellow at the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and paranormal investigator — about as much as you’d expect from any other scientific discipline. “A lot of these cases are never going to be solved because I don’t know what you think you saw 10 years ago. They’re not investigatable,” Nickell tells Futurism.

In other disciplines, a certain amount of uncertainty will mean that more studies are needed to definitely prove a link. But that’s not what happens with UFOs. “We spend all these years, virtually our entire lives (it’s what I’m doing with mine), and we’re solving most cases. We’re down to, say, 5 percent [that we can’t explain], and we’re arguing over the 5 percent,” Nickell says. You give someone a level-headed, thorough, earthly explanation for a particular report, and they’ll just respond, “But what about this other one?” This is, as Nickell points out, an argument from ignorance — in essence, X must be true because you can’t prove that X is false. “Why don’t we assume that, if we can explain 95 percent, that if we knew the answer, it would fall into the same category as the others?” Nickell says.

Belief in extraterrestrials is fueled by a lack of evidence, not its presence. For some people, that’s enough.

    The Psychology Of Believers

More than half of Americans believe that aliens exist, according to a 2015 poll. Scientists have evaluated what distinguishes believers and non-believers and didn’t find much, the Conversation notes. But people that believe they had an abduction experience, perhaps a more extreme form of belief, are more likely to have fantasy-prone personalities, have experienced childhood trauma, or be prone to hypnosisthat can make them suggestible to false memories, studies have shown. That doesn’t mean they’re lying about their experiences — they often genuinely believe they happened — but those experiences were often not quite what the individuals thought they were.

What distinguishes people who believe in Big Foot, for example, from those who believe in UFOs? It’s the suspicion of government involvement, Nickell says. More people believe in conspiracies than ever; if someone were looking to find a black-ops government program and a conspiracy to keep it secret, they’d find the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program.

“I think, for most people who believe in these UFO claims, it’s tied up with conspiracy. If you want to believe that UFOs are visiting the planet, there kind of has to be a cover up,” Rob Brotherton, a psychology professor at Barnard College and the author of Suspicious Minds: Why We Believe Conspiracy Theories, tells Futurism. And because they’re built on secrecy, it’s really hard to disprove a conspiracy theory, Brotherton points out.

Conspiracy theories about UFOs, in particular, are pretty widespread, and they have a psychological appeal that goes against the stereotype of weirdos wearing tinfoil hats. Conspiracy theories rely on the same pattern-recognition techniques we use in our daily lives, and in science as well. “Conspiracy theories make for great stories, they’re tantalizing, mysteries not yet fully solved. Your brain is like, ‘What’s up with that?’ it’s not satisfied until it knows if these things are related.”

Most of the time, people who believe in them are psychologically normal. But the belief that the government or aliens are specifically pursuing you as an individual — a me and not an us focus might indicate a psychiatric disorder like schizophrenia, though that would be one of a number of symptoms.

“It’s not impossible [that extraterrestrials are visiting Earth],” Brotherton says. “Maybe they’re technologically advanced, maybe they are able to make it here. That’s not beyond the realms of possibility; it doesn’t defy the laws of physics necessarily. It’s worth keeping an eye out for this stuff.”

    Worthy of Pursuit

Science hinges on discovery and the pursuit to understand the unknown. It’s not out of the realm of possibility, then, that some of these UFO reports are worthy of rigorous investigation. They could reveal something new about atmospheric phenomena, or physics, or, yes, possibly even extraterrestrials.

It’s not easy to separate the mysterious sightings, the ones that could yield something scientifically interesting, from the sightings that can quickly be resolved. “These are, almost by definition, unusual things to start with, something in the sky that we don’t know what it is. We don’t see them every night. So we have no idea [at the beginning of an investigation] if they’re going to be productive or not,” Nickell says.

Despite these difficulties, some investigators are already bringing the rigor of science to examine UFO reports. Some, like Nickell, are hunting down witnesses and testing theories; others, like Chase Kloetzke, the deputy director of investigations at MUFON, the world’s oldest and largest UFO investigation group, are retrieving physical evidence and testing alloys of unknown metals with cutting-edge microscopes and trained metallurgists. A number of organizations receive private funding, which sometimes means they have fewer resources than they would if they received governments grants. And the work is often thankless. “I’m trying, in the name of science, to do what most scientists don’t have time to do, what they consider frivolous nonsense,” Nickell says. “UFOs have been looked into now by the tens of thousands, even by official government studies. And what do we have to show? Not a lot. How many more will we have to look into? I would say we will never be done. I’m in it for the long haul.”

To do these sorts of investigations, it’s irrelevant whether or not they believe that extraterrestrials have really visited Earth. All people need is a rigorous scientific mind, perseverance to investigate doggedly, and a sensitive nose for falsehoods.

Now that information about the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program has spilled out, it buoys those who hope that the government might have evidence that could more clearly indicate the presence of extraterrestrials, something that stands up to the rigor of scientific evaluation. “Do we have a smoking gun? We do, it’s just locked up,” Kloetzke, of MUFON, says referring to the “physical material [the government] has been holding and analyzing.” “We’re pushing down the doors. We’re trying to breach this information,” she says.

Still, opinions vary on how much evidence is enough to prove the existence of extraterrestrials. “I think most people are going to need a craft to land in Central Park [to believe UFOs are real],” Kloetzke says.

“There is absolutely no solid evidence that meets any standards of scientific ‘proof’ that UFOs exist. That’s why people can’t take it seriously,” Sara Seager, an astrophysicist at MIT who studies exoplanets and was quoted in the New York Timesarticle, tells Futurism. To some, in the end, evidence doesn’t matter. “I am not a UFO supporter in any way. It’s just like why do people believe in God? There’s no way to scientifically prove the existence of any God or gods. People just want to believe.”

Alien Invasion: What Would Aliens REALLY Want With The Earth?

Let’s put aside the questions as to whether or not we’ve been visited by aliens. Let’s ask a better question:Why would aliens visit us at all? Is there anything about Earth that makes us prone to an alien invasion?

An Alien Invasion has Occurred, But For What Reason?

While there’s plenty of talk of human-alien hybridization programs & plans to take over our government and make us slaves, do these ideas make any sense? I mean, if a far advanced alien race came here with the intent of making us slaves, they wouldn’t need to infiltrate our government to do so. They’d just… do it. They would just do it because they’re so advanced relative to us. So let’s explore the possibilities…

The Most Unlikely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

The first 2 scenarios really have good reasons why they’re unlikely. While they’re popular with hardcore alien enthusiasts, many of which believe these things are happening now or have in the past, a step back to reality doesn’t support these ideas. The likely scenarios are much more insidious and dire for humans in the event of a true alien invasion.

    #1 Gold Mining

Gold is a very rare metal. For thousands of years, humans have mined it. We work for it. We kill for it. Aliens want gold too.

The idea is a cornerstone for Ancient Alien theorists. They believe that aliens came to the earth in ancient times to mine gold. In their desire for gold, they genetically modified ancient apes to make them more intelligent. The theory states that modern-day humans, us, are those genetically modified apes. Aliens designed us to have love and desire for gold so that we would mine it for them by our own ‘choice’.

Photo by Nick Karvounis on Unsplash

The Argument for an Alien Gold Mining Operation

Truth be told, there isn’t much evidence in support of this theory. Everyone who reads this blog knows my stance on the Ancient Alien religion. It’s undeniable that humans have a love and obsession with gold. We also have a love and obsession with lots of pretty stones and shiny metals that aren’t gold.

The Reality – Gold isn’t THAT Rare

While gold is a rare metal by certain standards, there’s no reason to think Earth has more gold than other rocky planets. Gold can only be created during a supernova and any planets forming in the resulting cloud of heavy elements will have some gold on them. So does it really make sense that aliens would travel here specifically for gold? Probably not. The fact of the matter is that from the perspective of an interstellar species, gold isn’t that rare or hard to find.

Alien technology would be so great, they wouldn’t need human ‘slaves’ to mine gold for them. They’d have machines that can do it much faster. Additionally, there’s no reason why they would choose an inhabited planet to mine when there are so many uninhabited ones out there. If they did choose to mine an inhabited planet such as the Earth, they’d probably wipe out all life first so that they wouldn’t have to deal with all the ankle biting from the pesky humans.

#2 Hybridization for Their Dying Species

Another popular theory by alien-believers is that aliens are running a hybridization program. The theory postulates aliens are a dying species, abducting humans, and taking DNA to merge with their own in order to strengthen their own biology. Many people believe it’s already happening.

The Arguments for an Alien Hybridization Program

The proponents of the theory point to cases of alien abduction & cattle mutilations as evidence. Sightings of cryptids, such as the Chupacabra, are cited as examples of alien hybridization having gone wrong.

Additionally, many female abductees describe being artificially inseminated and forced to carry fetuses only to be abducted later and having it removed. Male abductees frequently describe having semen extracted from them by their alien abductors. Some folks claim to have had sexual encounters with extraterrestrials.

The Reality – You Don’t Need Much DNA for Hybridization

By far, the weakest part of the entire theory is that a little DNA goes a long way. A single human carries enough DNA information to hybridize an entire generation of extraterrestrials. Aside from the fact that many abduction cases can be dismissed as instances of sleep paralysis, continued abductions for 50+ years would be unnecessary.

It’s also worth noting that a species capable of interstellar travel would have learned how to genetically modify themselves without the need for samples from a relatively primordial species such as ourselves.

The Most Likely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

This set of scenarios for an alien invasion take into account what science knows about intelligent life and how it behaves. Of course, we only have ourselves to look at, but you work with what you’ve got right? These scenarios which come from real scientists are much more disturbing than some of the fantasy stories tossed around by the ancient alien and conspiracy crowds.

#1 Their Own Earth-like Planet was Destroyed

What if aliens weren’t very different from us? What if they came from a planet just like ours in a neighboring solar system? Maybe their planet died or became uninhabitable, and the entire species took the skies looking for a new place to call home.

    Nebula

Woah, This One is Crazy to Think About

As a skeptic, this scenario for an alien invasion is mind blowing because it could actually happen. No planet lives forever. Our own Earth has gone through several mass extinction events and there’s no reason to think other planets would be any different.

We’d likely be powerless to stop it, and if our own history of exploration is any indication, it wouldn’t turn out very well for us humans. Think about what happened to the Native Americans when Europeans discovered the New World…

#2 Natural Resources that Support Carbon-Based Life

If there’s one thing more rare in the universe than gold and diamonds, it’s life. At least, life as we know it – carbon-based life. Life with all its associated proteins & fats is likely the rarest thing in the cosmos. We know this because we’ve looked around and not found it anywhere else.

    Tropical Paradise

Photo by Milada Vigerova on Unsplash

Earth’s Natural Resources Would be a Figurative Goldmine

While it rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn, the compounds necessary to support carbon-based life are much rarer. Earth’s trees, plants, animals, & humans might be so rare in the universe that aliens could invade in order to use these sources of energy.

The rarity of life in the universe makes the Earth a prime candidate for aliens wishing to create a planetary zoo or to rule us. They could also potentially farm the life on Earth for food much as humans currently do.

    #3 Dominance

It could simply be that a space-faring race may come to the earth simply to rule the population. Remember Superman 2? Political and social power can be addictive and satisfying to intelligent beings. The desire to rulemay even be a common trait of all intelligent species.

    alien invasion grey alien

The Desire to Rule Depends on the Aliens

The culture of the aliens who happen to find us really determines the likelihood of this scenario. By all counts, it’s a true alien invasion of the type only seen in movies and cinema. The takeover could be quick and violent, or it could be slow and shadowy. Proponents say it’s already happening. They point to reports of reptilian aliens infiltrating our government and big corporations as evidence.

#4 They Might Be Looking for a Planetary Zoo

Zoos are pretty cool. Maybe aliens think so too? Perhaps aliens wouldn’t actually invade the earth as much as keeping it ‘caged up’ for observation.

    lions in zoo

Another Very Possible Alien Invasion Scenario

Like the previous example, the planetary zoo is very possible. What’s really crazy? It might already be happening and we aren’t even aware of it.

    #5 Food – Humans? Yummy!

There isn’t a single animal on this planet that humans won’t eat. We’ll eat anything except other humans (and there are even exceptions to that as well). Aliens might be the same way, especially if carbon-based life turns out to be a compatible food for their biology.

    Steak Rosemary

Photo by Jez Timms on Unsplash

The Scariest Scenario of All: Humans = Cattle

Based our own behavior towards other animals, this scenario is highly likely. Perhaps, it’s the most likely of all. And it’s utterly terrifying. With advanced intelligence and technology, humans would be raised as cattle scarcely aware of our true purpose. We might live out our lives without so much as a hint of our grisly ends at the hands of our alien farmers.

    Other Reasons?

We can only guess at the motives of our potential alien invaders. Perhaps the alien invasion will have nothing to do with us at all, or maybe it will have everything to do with us. Regardless, if aliens ever do come to meet us with technology millions of years ahead of us, we won’t have much say in the matter anyway. And that’s the scariest part of the entire thing.

What do you think? Why would aliens invade the earth? Let us know below in the comments.

Is SpaceX Sending a Tesla Roadster to Mars? We’ll Believe It When We See It.

    IN BRIEF
In what seems like a true space oddity, Elon Musk supposedly plans to send his own original cherry Tesla Roadster to a space odyssey to Mars. Photos of a red Roadster sitting on a payload fitting have since surfaced online and on Musk's Instagram. But are they for real?

    A PAYLOAD FIT FOR MARS?

In September, SpaceX CEO and founder Elon Musk spoke at the 2017 International Astronautical Congress about his updated plans for Mars. According to the revamped plan’s timetable, SpaceX will send at least two unmanned cargo flights to the Red Planet by 2022, with a manned mission following by 2024.

Earlier this December, Musk tweeted that the payload for SpaceX’s inaugural trip to Mars would be his own original Tesla Roadster. He hinted at his reasoning for choosing the Roadster in another tweet: “I love the thought of a car drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future.” In another post, Musk even promised to show photos soon.

Though most originally assumed this was a joke, speculation grew when a photo posted in a SpaceX subreddit in the late hours of December 21. The photo appears to show a Tesla Roadster sitting on top of what looks like a SpaceX payload attachment.

The image made rounds in a NASA Spaceflight forum, where users tried to make sense of the plan by creating scaled images of the Roadster inside a SpaceX fairing.

Then, midday on December 22, Musk ramped things up another notch, posting seven photos to Instagram that appear to show the real deal. As promised, the photos show a cherry-red Tesla roadster ready to be encased within (we assume) a brand-new Falcon Heavy rocket.

    SPACEX ODDITIES

While the payload might seem crazy, in typical Musk fashion, there is a reason behind it. As Musk explained in his Instagram post, test flights for new rockets usually contain concrete or steel blocks in order to simulate the mass they’ll carry during flight. In the case of the Falcon Heavy’s inaugural flight, Musk writes that this “seemed extremely boring.”

“Of course, anything boring is terrible, especially companies, so we decided to send something unusual, something that made us feel,” he writes. “The payload will be an original Tesla Roadster, playing Space Oddity, on a billion year elliptic Mars orbit.”

It makes sense not to load a rocket’s inaugural flight with expensive electronics and science equipment; as SpaceX knows well, it’s not uncommon for rockets to experience errors or even blow up during test flights. However, given the cost of a Roadster and the growing problem of space junk around our planet, one might question the wastefulness of the planned test.

Of course, it’s also wise to take Musk’s posts with a grain of salt, since he’s known to randomly joke around on social media. His most recent pranks include tweeting what people thought was his personal mobile number, which turned out to be a an easter egg from the God of War video game, as well as April Fools’ tweets about chemtrails as messages from non-English speaking aliens. Musk’s latest images certainly look legitimate, and supposedly, sources have told Electrek that the plan is as real as it can get. But observers of his antics have learned to be skeptical.

Futurism has reached out to SpaceX for comment, and will update this post with any response we receive.

So, is Musk sending a Tesla Roadster — and his own original car, even — to Mars? We’ll believe it when we see it.

Mystery Crater and Broken Windshields on Canadian Highways May Be Meteorites

Police in Thunder Bay, Ontario received several calls last week after residents heard and felt a large explosion overheard that was strong enough to rattle their homes. One resident even reported seeing a bright flash overhead at the time of the boom. As police searched the surrounding area, they found an unexplained crater in the snow beside Highway 61. Fragments of rock were found in the crater, leading some scientists to believe that the crater might have been caused by a small meteorite left in the wake of last week’s Geminid Meteor shower.

    Not quite a dinosaur killer.

    Not quite a dinosaur killer.

Stephen Kissin, a geology professor at the nearby Lakehead University, told the local Thunder Bay News Watch that while the mysterious crater could have been caused by a small meteorite fragment, the rock which fell into the Earth’s atmosphere was most certainly much scarier:

It was almost certainly larger than what we saw here because of the loud detonation and the shockwaves people reported. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who did see it. It was, however, over a sparsely populated area and late at night, and a cold night as well, so perhaps people weren’t about.

Because Thunder Bay sits on the shore of Lake Superior, it’s likely that any larger fragments could have ended up in the water. The smaller samples which were collected are being analyzed under electron microscopes in an attempt to determine their composition and origin, but the tests are complicated by the fact that gravel and other roadside debris is mixed in with the potential meteorite fragments found in the crater.

Some of the samples believed to be fragments of the meteorite.

Some of the samples believed to be fragments of the meteorite.

In a somewhat similar story, several drivers in Newfoundland recently got the shock of their lives when “unidentified objects” smashed their windshields and windows while they were driving. The incidents were all several miles apart in different townships. Could these be further fragments of a meteor which exploded over central and eastern Canada? It’s possible. Given the many unexplained booms and fireballs in the sky which have increasingly common phenomena in 2017, is it time to wonder if the threat from near-Earth objects has become much more serious than we are being told? The U.S. government has recently begun preparing an emergency response plan for the event of possible strikes, while NASA is testing methods of redirecting potentially dangerous asteroids and meteorites. What’s really going on overhead? Do we really want to know? One thing is certain: Santa Claus better keep an eye out next week. He could be in for a bumpy sleigh ride.

Mystery of the Interstellar Object May Have Been Solved

    It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s an interstellar space ship! It’s …

Astronomers and SETI researchers studying Oumuamua, the mysterious cigar-shaped interstellar object that looped tightly around the Sun recently, think they’ve solved the mystery of what it really is. Ladies and gentlemen, Oumuamua is a …

Not so fast. We may in danger just talking or reading about Oumuamua. That’s a warning put forth by Nick Pope, former head of Britain’s Ministry of Defence UFO project, in SunOnline.

If this ship is an alien probe, it’s possible that our scans will awake the intelligence inside.”

Pope is referring to the Breakthrough Listen project led by Stephen Hawking which has been using high-tech scanners to listen for signs of life or any kind of non-asteroidal noises coming from Oumuamua. It’s found nothing as of this writing, but Pope thinks it’s because they‘re listening for the wrong thing.

Because there’s no air in space, an alien spaceship wouldn’t need to be designed in the same way that our aircraft have to be. Rather than building an interstellar spacecraft from scratch, it makes perfect sense to take an asteroid and then build your ship around it, or hollow it out and build inside it, for the protection you’d derive from being surrounded by so much rock.

Whoa! That sounds plausible, especially coming from such a UFO expert. However, some astronomers observing Oumuamua disagree. In a paper published this week in the journal Nature Astronomy, professor Alan Fitzsimmons from the Queen’s University Belfast agrees with Pope that Oumuamua is not what it appears to be, but he doesn’t think it’s a spaceship. In an interview with Space.com, he says he also doesn’t think it’s an asteroid.

We didn’t see any signs of typical spectroscopic signatures that you would expect from the minerals on the surface of an asteroid we see in our solar system. It rather seems to resemble the [icy] objects that are there in the outer solar system. That kind of got our head scratching. If the object had, originally at least, ice in it, what’s happened to it?

    A non-crusty comet

What happened was, like humans on trips that last much longer than expected, Oumuamua got crusty. Modeling its behavior, the astronomers determined that Oumuamua’s actions indicated it had an icy center surrounded by a thin crust. That sounds like an ice cream-and-cake dessert treat, but what it actually might be is a comet hidden inside a 20-inch-thick crust that protects its icy center from melting and prevents it from having a comet’s tail.

Fitzsimmons received support in his hypothesis from astronomer Michelle Bannister, a colleague at Queens University, who, in a separate paper to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, said this:

We’ve discovered that this is a planetesimal with a well-baked crust that looks a lot like the tiniest worlds in the outer regions of our solar system.

Today’s word is “planetesimal,” which means “a minute planet; a body that could or did come together with many others under gravitation to form a planet.”

    Planetesimals

So Oumuamua is likely to be a crusty comet (a great name for a band) from another solar system.

    Back to you, Nick Pope.

Former Blink-182 member Tom DeLonge hints Pentagon UFO disclosure is only the beginning: 'There's a lot more s--t coming'

Tom DeLonge has long been mocked for his obsession with UFOs, but it seems like he’s on to something.

Tom DeLonge has long been mocked for his obsession with UFOs, but it seems like he’s on to something.

    (LEANN MUELLER)

Tom DeLonge knows the truth is out there.

And after leaving pop punk band Blink-182 to focus on exploring unexplained phenomena full-time, DeLonge is ready to share that truth — that aliens exist, that UFOs aren't actually “unidentified” and that extraterrestrial technology could save humanity — with the rest of the world.

As the founder of To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science, DeLonge is working with former high-ranking officials from the Department of Defense, CIA, NSA and Lockheed Martin's “Skunk Works” aerospace program.

One of DeLonge's partners is Luis Elizondo, who ran the Pentagon's top-secret UFO investigation program that the New York Times revealed in a bombshell report Saturday.

Luis Elizondo of To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science.

(TO THE STARS ACADEMY OF ARTS & SCIENCE)

According to DeLonge, disclosures like Saturday's report are “only the tip of the spear,” and further “confirmation” of extraterrestrial life will continue to trickle out.

DeLonge claims the U.S. government has not only known about the existence of alien life for decades, but that they've also been actively experimenting with alien technologies.

And while this information has largely been hidden from the general public, DeLonge wants to lead what he believes will be an international - and perhaps, one day, intergalactic — conversation about how these soon-to-be-declassified technologies can benefit mankind.

    (LUCY NICHOLSON/AP)

“I know that it's fun to make snarky comments, but this isn't the kind of thing to joke about,” DeLonge told the Daily News earlier this month. “This is going to really affect a lot of people and a lot of peoples' belief systems.”

The organization has three divisions — aerospace, science and entertainment — and will attempt to “bring transformative science and engineering out of the shadows” free from “the restrictions of government priorities.”

DeLonge wants To the Stars to be owned by the public, which is why the company is relying on crowdfunding to launch. So far, To the Stars has raised over $2.1 million from more than 2,200 individual investors.

To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science launched in October.

(TO THE STARS ACADEMY OF ARTS & SCIENCE)

“What we're trying to do is make sure the story of the millennia and the technology of the millennia are owned by the people from day one,” Delonge said. "Part of our strategy has always been to throw it all out in the open so people can't come and try to shut it down from some weird office at NATO or the United Nations or the United States or whatever."

DeLonge hopes that To the Stars will use previously classified information about alien technologies to achieve breakthroughs that government agencies like NASA have been uninterested in exploring.

One such innovation is what DeLonge refers to as “engineering the space-time metric,” which is being developed by Dr. Hal Puthoff, a longtime government physicist and a current To the Stars partner.

“It's like a time machine,” DeLonge said. “You get into this craft and you turn it on — boom! — you're in China in one minute as a ball of light.”

Other To the Stars projects will seek to revolutionize human space travel, combat climate change, improve national security, enhance genetics, harness telepathy and more.

“All the things (people have) heard about and seen are the first step of 20," DeLonge said. “There's a lot more s--t coming.”

The Sphinx Of Balochistan: Is It A Man-made, Rock-cut, Architectural Marvel?

The Balochistan Sphinx Temple Platform with steps, pillars, niches and a symmetric pattern.

Concealed within the desolate, rocky landscape of the Makran coastline of Southern Balochistan, Pakistan, is an architectural gem that has gone unnoticed and unexplored for centuries. The ‘Balochistan Sphinx’, as it is popularly called, came into the public eye only after the Makran Coastal Highway opened in 2004, linking Karachi with the port town of Gwadar on the Makran coast.1 A four-hour, 240-kilometer-long drive through meandering mountain passes and arid valleys from Karachi brings travellers to Hingol National Park, where the Balochistan Sphinx is located.

    The Balochistan Sphinx

The Balochistan Sphinx is routinely passed off by journalists as a natural formation, although no archaeological survey appears to have been conducted on the site.2 If we explore the features of the structure, as well as its surrounding complex, it becomes difficult to accept the oft-repeated premise that it has been shaped by natural forces. Rather, the site looks like a gigantic, rock-cut, architectural complex.

A cursory glance at the impressive sculpture shows the Sphinx to have a well-defined jawline, and clearly discernible facial features such as eyes, nose, and mouth, which are placed in seemingly perfect proportion to each other.

    (a) The Balochistan Sphinx of Hingol National Park, ©Bilal Mirza CC BY 2.0.

    (b) Face of the Great Sphinx of Giza, ©Hamerani CC BY-SA 4.0. Striking similarities can be drawn between its face, and that of (a), the Balochistan Sphinx.

The Sphinx appears to be decked up in a head-dress that closely resembles the Nemes head-dress of the Egyptian pharaoh. The Nemes headdress is a striped head-cloth that covers the crown and back of the head. It has two large, conspicuous, flaps which hang down behind the ears and in front of the shoulders. The ear-flaps can be discerned on the Balochistan Sphinx, as well as some stripe marks. The Sphinx has a horizontal groove across its forehead, which corresponds to the pharaonic headband that holds the Nemes headdress in place.

One can easily make out the contours of the reclining forelegs of the Sphinx, which terminate in very well-defined paws. It is difficult to see how nature could have carved out a statue that resembles a well-known mythical animal to such an astonishingly accurate degree.

The Balochistan Sphinx resembles the Egyptian sphinxes in many respects.

    The Sphinx-Temple

In close proximity to the Balochistan Sphinx is another important structure. From a distance, it looks like a Hindu Temple (like those of South India), with a Mandapa(entrance hall) and a Vimana (temple spire). The top part of the Vimana appears to be missing. The Sphinx is reclining in front of the temple, acting as protector of the sacred site.

The Balochistan Sphinx reclines in front of a temple-like structure.

    Source: www.pakistanpaedia.com

In ancient, sacred architecture, the sphinx performed a protective function, and was generally placed in a pair on either side of entrances to temples, tombs, and sacred monuments. In ancient Egypt, the sphinx had the body of a lion, but its head could be that of a man (Androsphinx), a ram (Criosphinx) or a falcon (Hierocosphinx).3 The Great Sphinx of Giza, for instance, acts as guardian of the Pyramid Complex.

In Greece, the sphinx had the head of a woman, the wings of an eagle, the body of a lioness, and according to some, the tail of a serpent.4 The colossal statue of the Sphinx of Naxos stood on a towering ionic column, at the sacred Oracle of Delphi, acting as a protector of the site.

In Indian art and sculpture, the sphinx is known as purusha-mriga (‘man-beast’ in Sanskrit), and its primary position was near the temple gateway, acting as a guardian of the sanctuary.5 However, sphinxes were sculpted all over the temple premises including the entrance gates (gopuram), halls (mandapa) and near the central shrine (garbagriha). Raja Deekshithar identified 3 basic forms of the Indian sphinx:

A crouching sphinx with a human face, but with certain lion characteristics like mane and elongated ears

A striding or jumping sphinx with a fully human face

A half-upright or fully-upright sphinx, sometimes with moustaches and long beards, often in an act of worshipping a Shiva-linga.6

Sphinxes also feature in Buddhist architecture of Southeast Asia. In Myanmar, they are called Manusiha (from the Sanskrit manu-simha, meaning man-lion). They are depicted in a cat-like crouching posture at the corners of Buddhist stupas. They wear a tapering crown and ornamental ear-flaps, and have feathered wings attached to their front limbs.7

So, throughout the ancient world, the sphinx acted as a protector of sacred places. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Sphinx of Balochistan also appears to be guarding the temple-like structure adjacent to it. This suggests that the site was laid out in accordance with the principles of sacred architecture.

A closer look at the Balochistan Sphinx-Temple reveals clear evidence of pillars carved on a boundary wall. The temple entrance is visible behind a large pile-up of sediment or termite mounds. An elevated, sculpted, structure to the left of the entrance could be a subsidiary shrine. Overall, there can be little doubt that this a massive, man-made, rock-cut monument of great antiquity.

The Balochistan Sphinx-Temple shows clear signs of being a man-made, rock-cut temple.

Interestingly, there seems to be two monumental sculptures carved on the façade of the Sphinx-Temple, right above the entrance, on either side.

The carvings are heavily eroded, making their identification difficult; but it looks as if the figure on the left could be Kartikeya (Skanda/Murugan) holding his spear (vel); and the figure on the right, a striding Ganesha. Incidentally, both Kartikeya and Ganesha are sons of Shiva, meaning that the temple complex could have been dedicated to Shiva.

While identification at this stage is speculative, the presence of sculpted figures on the façade gives greater weight to this being a man-made structure.

The façade carvings on the Balochistan Sphinx-Temple could be that of Kartikeya and Ganesha.

The structure of the Sphinx-Temple suggests that it may actually be a Gopuram, i.e. the entrance tower of a temple. Like the Sphinx-Temple, gopurams are generally flat-topped. Gopurams have a row of ornamental kalasams (stone or metal pots) arranged on top. From careful study of the flat-topped Sphinx-Temple, one can discern a number of ‘spikes’ on top, which could be a row of kalasams, covered with sediment or termite mounds.

Gopurams are attached to the boundary wall of a temple, and the Sphinx-Temple appears to be contiguous with the outer boundary. Gopurams also feature giant sculpted figures of dvarapalas, i.e. door guardians; and as we have noted, the Sphinx-Temple appears to have two monumental figures carved on its façade, just above the entrance, which serve as the dvarapalas.

The Balochistan Sphinx-Temple could be a gopuram, i.e. an entrance tower of a temple.

An elevated structure to the left of the Sphinx-Temple could be another gopuram. This implies that there could be four gopurams in the cardinal directions leading to a central courtyard, where the main shrine of the temple complex was built (which cannot be seen in the photograph). This kind of temple architecture is quite common in South Indian Temples.

    The Sphinx-Temple Platform

The elevated platform on which the Sphinx and Temple are situated appears to have been elaborately carved with pillars, niches, and a symmetrical pattern that extends across the entire upper part of the platform. Some of the niches may well be doors that lead to chambers and halls under the Sphinx-Temple. It is believed by many, including mainstream Egyptologists like Mark Lehner, that there could be chambers and passages under the Great Sphinx of Giza as well. It is also interesting to note that the Balochistan Sphinx and the Sphinx-Temple are situated on an elevated platform, just as the Sphinx and the Pyramids of Egypt are built on the Giza plateau overlooking the city of Cairo.

Another conspicuous feature of this site is a series of steps leading to the elevated platform. The steps appear to be evenly spaced, and of uniform height. The entire site gives the impression of a grand, rock-cut, architectural complex, which has been eroded by the elements, and covered by layers of sediment, masking the more intricate details of the sculptures.

The Balochistan Sphinx-Temple Platform can be made out to have been carved with steps, pillars, niches and a symmetrical pattern.

    Site Sedimentation

What could have deposited so much sediment on the site? The Makran coast of Balochistan is a seismically active zone, which frequently produces enormous tsunamis that obliterate entire villages. It has been reported that the earthquake of November 28 1945, with its epicentre off the coast of Makran, caused a tsunami with waves reaching as high as 13m in some places.8

Additionally, a number of mud volcanoes are strewn along the Makran coastline, some of which are located in the Hingol National Park, near the Hingol river delta.9Intense earthquake activity triggers the volcanoes to erupt, spewing staggering amounts of mud, and drowning the surrounding landscape. Sometimes, mud volcano islands appear off the coast of Makran, in the Arabian Sea, which are dissipated by wave action within a year.10 The combined action of tsunamis, mud volcanoes and termite mounds may, therefore, be responsible for the build-up of sediment on the site.

    Historical Context

An elaborate Indian temple complex on the Makran coast should not come as a surprise, for Makran had always been regarded by the Arab chroniclers as ‘the frontier of al-Hind.11 A-Biruni wrote that, “the coast of al-Hind begins with Tiz, the capital of Makran, and from there extends in a south-eastern direction….”12 Though the sovereignty of parts of the region alternated between Indian and Persian kings from very early times, it retained “an Indianised identity all along”.13 In the decades preceding the Muslim raids, Makran was under the dominion of a dynasty of Hindu kings, who had their capital at Alor in Sind.14

The term ‘Makran’ is sometimes taken to be a corruption of the Persian Maki-Khoran, meaning ‘fish-eaters’. But it is also thought that the name derives from a Dravidian toponymic ‘Makara’.15 When the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsang visited Makran in the 7th century AD, he noted the script that was in use in Makran to be “much the same as that of India,” but the spoken language to have “differed a little from that of India”.16 Historian Andre Wink writes:

The same chiefdom of Armadil is referred to by Hiuen Tsang as ‘O-tien-p’o-chi-lo’, located at the high road running through Makran. He also describes it as predominantly Buddhist; thinly populated though it was, it had no less than 80 Buddhist convents with about 5000 monks. In effect at eighteen kilometres northwest of Las Bela at Gandakahar, near the ruins of an ancient town are the caves of Gondrani, and as their constructions show these caves were undoubtedly Buddhist. Traveling through the Kij valley further west (then under the government of Persia) Hiuen Tsang saw some 100 Buddhist monasteries and 6000 priests. He also saw several hundred Deva temples in this part of Makran, and in the town of Su-nu li-chi-shi-fa-lo – which is probably Qasrqand- he saw a temple of Maheshvara Deva, richly adorned and sculptured. There is thus very wide extension of Indian cultural forms in Makran in the seventh century, even in the period when it fell under Persian sovereignty. By comparison, in more recent times the last place of Hindu pilgrimage in Makran was Hinglaj, 256 km west of present day Karachi, in Las Bela.17

Thus, according to the accounts of Hiuen Tsang, the Makran coast was – even in the 7th century AD – dotted with hundreds of Buddhist monasteries and caves, as well as several hundred Hindu Temples, including a richly sculpted temple of Lord Shiva.

What happened to these caves, temples, and monasteries of the Makran coast? Why have they not been restored and brought into the public eye? Are they suffering the same fate as the Sphinx-Temple Complex? Probably so. Eroded by the elements and covered with sediment, these ancient monuments have either been entirely forgotten or are being passed off as natural formations.

Indeed, close to the Balochistan Sphinx, on top of an elevated platform, are the remnants of what appears to be another ancient Hindu-like temple, complete with the MandapaShikhara (Vimana), pillars and niches.

An ancient Temple of Makran, with VimanaMandapa, pillars and niches.

    How Old Are These Temples?

The Indus Valley Civilisation extended along the Makran coastline, and its westernmost archaeological site is known as the Sutkagen Dor, near the Iranian border. Some of the temples and rock-cut sculptures of the region, including the Sphinx-Temple Complex, could, therefore, have been built thousands of years ago, during the Indus Period (c. 3000 BCE), or earlier. It is possible that the site was built in phases, and that some of the structures are extremely old, and others comparatively recent. Dating rock-cut monuments is, however, difficult in the absence of inscriptions. If the site contains readable inscriptions that can be interpreted (another tricky proposition, since the Indus script has not yet yielded its secrets), then it may be possible to put a date on some of the monuments. In the absence of inscriptions, scientists will have to rely on datable artefacts/human remains, architectural styles, geological erosion patterns, and other clues, however.

One of the persistent mysteries of the Indian Civilisation is the profusion of exquisite rock-cut temples and monuments that were built from the 3rd century BCE onwards. How did the skills and techniques for building these sacred places of worship appear without a corresponding period of evolution? The rock-cut monuments of the Makran coastline may provide much-needed continuity between the architectural forms and techniques of the Indus period and the later-day Indian civilisation. It may have been on the mountains of the Makran coast that the Indus artisans honed and perfected their skills, which were later transported to the Indian civilisation.

The Indus Valley Civilisation included sites located along the Makran coast.

Undoubtedly, there is a virtual treasure trove of archaeological wonders waiting to be discovered on the Makran coast of Balochistan. Unfortunately, these magnificent monuments, whose origins go back to unknown antiquity, continue to languish in isolation, thanks to the appalling level of apathy towards them. It appears that little attempt has been made to acknowledge or restore them, and the journalists routinely pass them off as ‘natural formations’. The situation can only be salvaged if international attention is drawn to these structures, and teams of archaeologists (as well as independent enthusiasts) from around the globe visit these enigmatic monuments to research, restore, and promote them.

The importance of these ancient monuments of the Makran coast can hardly be overstated. They could be of great antiquity, and provide us with important clues to uncover humanity’s mysterious past.
