A pebble found in a field of Libyan desert glass in southwest Egypt has proven to be quite a mystery, and may even shake up our very understanding of the history of our solar system. The pebble is known as the Hypatia Stone, named after 4th century Greek philosopher and mathematician Hypatia who is remembered as being one of the first notable female mathematicians. The pebble appears unremarkable on the surface, measuring just a few centimeters across and dark grey in color. What makes the pebble unique is its chemical composition, one that is unlike any other known substance on Earth or in space. Where did the Hypatia stone come from?

Most planets and known meteorites contain silicate minerals and a small amount of carbon, but the Hypatia pebble has been found to have a nearly opposite composition of mostly carbon with very little silicon. Even stranger, the pebble contains a high amount of polyaromatic hydrocarbons, a major component of interstellar dust which existed before our own solar system formed. Georgy Belyanin, a geologist at the University of Johannesburg and one of the authors of the study of the hypatia stone, says this unique composition may date it to before the birth of our own Sun and place its origin outside of our own solar system:

In the grains within Hypatia the ratios of these three elements to each other are completely different from that calculated for the planet Earth or measured in known types of meteorites. As such these inclusions are unique within our solar system. We think the nickel-phosphorus-iron grains formed pre-solar, because they are inside the matrix, and are unlikely to have been modified by shock such as collision with the Earth’s atmosphere or surface, and also because their composition is so alien to our solar system.

If confirmed, that would make it the only own fragment from this period of the universe’s history. It’s still unknown from where the pebble originated, however. There is a chance it could have originated in a comet or meteorite from the far edges of our solar system, but since we haven’t been able study those objects, scientists are still unsure of their compositions. Furthermore, if it came from our solar system, it would challenge our entire understanding of how our solar system formed. Pretty impressive for a pebble.

Footage of Bright UFO Leaving the Moon

On January 1, 2018, Matt Beland was working all day and finally he went on his break to smoke. Stared to take a picture of the moon he saw something was going on so he flipped the video on and started to record.

After viewing the video it looks like a bright UFO coming out or leaving the moon till it disappears.

According to Matt, who has filmed the object from an unknown location, he has seen the exact same thing several times before next to the moon.

Alien Ship Discovered On the Moon

A YouTube video titled “Alien Ship on the Lunar Surface” depicts a sizeable strange object on the lunar surface. UFO and alien researcher Streetcap1 claims he got pictures of the mysterious object from the Chinese Chang’e 3 lunar rover, which was launched in 2013.

Streetcap1 says that he does not know what else it could be and encourage the viewers to look at the detail.
He claims that no colour or brightness adjustments have been made on the photos at all. He stresses that it is precisely how it looks on the Chinese Chang’e 3 photographs.

The video has received mix comments and got thousands of views.

Some say the photos are spectacular and that they are fantastic finds. Others suggest that alien ship or not, it is something that should not be ignored.

Others have accused the uploader as a hoaxer and that the footage is fake.

A day after the video was uploaded, he uploaded another footage revealing that suspicious viewers bombarded him. He claimed to have been getting a lot of hassle from non-believers and trolls on his last video.

He insisted that no point of uploading fake rubbish unless you’re in it for money. He explained he is in it for the Kudos, which he considered worth a lot more than money.

He added that he is proud of his work and it makes him angry when people accused his channel fake.

Rh Negative Blood: An Alien Origin or a Rare Mutation?

Being of the Rhesus monkey lineage, around 85 % of the world population inherits the Rh positive blood group. The remaining 10-15 % is Rh negative pointing out their origin being from a different source.

This difference in blood type has attracted various conspiracy theories – linking them to reptilian blood in one and to an alien origin in another.

Our immune system responds to any foreign substance by generating antibodies. The triggering up of these antibodies is a function of antigens. One such important antigen found in Rh positive blood type is the D antigen.The absence of this antigen indicates a person having a Rh negative blood type.

Apart from a difference in certain traits and characteristics, they live a normal life.  In fact,  as this blood type lacks proteins, it provides them immunity against certain diseases which require proteins as a carrier.

Mothers immune system rejects the fetus

 This blood type becomes a cause of concern only during the pregnancy when a Rh negative mother carries a fetus having the Rh-positive blood type.

When the blood of mother comes in contact with that of the fetus blood, it develops antibodies against the Rh D antigen. The mother’s immune system can then prove fatal for the fetus.

But with the advancement in medical science, medications are now available to prevent the fetus from such harm.

Some believe that the evolution of Rh negative blood came about when aliens mated with humans.

As these people are blessed with psychic and intuitive powers, did the aliens desired to create a lineage separate from rest of the humanity?  or did they wanted them to act as angels and prevent humanity at the time of need?

Some of the strange things common to the people having this bloodline are

• They are doing research on ancient astronauts
• Author of the books based on extraterrestrials, space, and science
• Are alien abductees

It is no denying the fact that our history has also pointed to alien visitations. These indications come preserved in the form of scriptures, stone carvings, and paintings.

The largest percentage of this bloodline are the Basque people who live near the Pyrenees mountain between France and Spain.They are semi-isolated from the rest of Europe

No one knows exactly where the Basques came from. Some say they have lived in that area since Cro-Magnon man first roamed Europe. Estimates of how long they have lived there vary from 10,000 to 75,000 years. Some say they are descended from the original Iberians. More fanciful theories exist, as well. One is that the Basques are the descendants of the survivors of Atlantis.

Scientific explanation

Let us now understand how science tries to clarify this conspiracy.

According to this website, our DNA decides our body characteristics. With a slight change in DNA, our characteristics also change.

These DNA changes can take place either when a cell divides or through outside influences such as radiation.

Mutation, as we know, is the change in the DNA or genome of an individual. Rh negative blood type having no D antigen evolved due to one such mutation.This also changed their appearance and immune system characteristics.

What a Rh-negative mothers immune system is doing is activating its defense system obeying its DNA characteristics.

One of the inherent benefit they have over other individuals is their immunity against the parasite Toxoplasma. Also, as this bloodline is prominent in places having this parasite, it is indicative of a rare mutation took place which aided the people having this mutation to cope well.

As people in Europe account for the maximum percentage having this blood type, maybe this served them to survive in that geography.

CONCLUSION

Whether the Rh negative blood type is of alien origin or a rare genetic mutation, weighs equal.It can be concluded only after science gives us, even more, facts to remove the veil out of its very origin.

If it is only a result of genetic mutation then why does it makes such people more intuitive, psychic healers, being the popular target of aliens,  science and space explorers? There are a lot of questions which need to be answered to reach a definite conclusion.

Who knows that the theory of alien mating with humans turns out to be true when science has sufficient data to back up the claims or it turns out to be our random assumption with the concept of genetic mutation winning in the end.

Un "ancien employé de la Zone 51" affirme avoir piloté une Soucoupe volante !

Filibert : Il est vrai que d'après les témoignages de personnes qui ont été dans des vaisseaux extraterrestres, il n'y a pas de manettes ou commandes, tout se fait pas transmission de pensée !  Ici nous avons affaire à une soucoupe terrestre mise au point, sans doute, avec l'aide d'extraterrestres collaborant avec les humains. Mais pour la piloter, il faut savoir bien visualiser l'endroit où l'on désire aller, il faudrait faire des essais avec un simulateur pour savoir bien transmettre des ordres à la machine !  L'Aire 51 est une des bases avec Dulce, l'Aire S-4…, où il y a des extraterrestres qui collaborent avec les Hommes !

A flash seen over a wide swath of Russia on January 7 at first caused fears of a U.S. air strike on North Korea. For now, the flash is unexplained.

Siberian Times and other media reported this week (January 9, 2018) on an exceedingly bright flash that “turned night to day” over a wide swath of western Russia on Sunday, January 7. Some media reported that the flash caused speculationabout a U.S. air strike over North Korea. A next logical assumption might be a meteor, but – as of this writing – there are no reports about the event in the meteor logs for both the International Meteor Organization and the American Meteor Society, suggesting no bright streak of a meteor was seen.

The flash was seen primarily over three regions Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstan.

Siberian Times reported:

The black sky suddenly turned momentarily deep blue as if on a bright day – but according to some accounts, the Earth moved too.

Experts insist the phenomenon was not manmade: there were no reports of missile tests or explosions.

Nor were there reports of meteorites striking the Earth.

Witnesses had the feeling something massive had happened – but what?

Looking back, I noticed a story about a similar bright flash over Russia in 2014. In that story, an IFLScience reportconcluded:

It’s definitely possible that the light wasn’t originating in the sky; it came from the ground and was being reflected off of the clouds.

Other explanations include “dry thunderstorms” to “atmospheric electricity.”

Sun pillars, or light pillars, are shafts of light extending from the sun or other bright light source. They’re caused by ice crystals drifting in Earth’s air.

Canada geese look like ghosts as they fly though a sun pillar – January 28, 2017 – in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.

EarthSky Facebook friends occasionally post beautiful photos of sun pillars, or light pillars. For example, there was a beautiful one seen from the U.S. West Coast on March 20, 2016 … a beautiful prelude to the first full night of spring. Sun pillars are vertical shafts of light that extend upward (or downward) from a bright light source, such as the sun or other bright light low on the horizon. They can be five to 10 degrees tall and sometimes even higher. They might lengthen or brighten as you gaze at them.

They’re beautiful and wondrous. They’re also the source of some UFO reports!

Sun pillars or light pillars are formed by reflection from hexagonal plate-like ice crystals in Earth’s air. These crystals drift through the atmosphere with a horizontal orientation, gently rocking from side to side as they fall. Diagram via University of Illinois.

Sun pillars or light pillars form when sunlight (or another bright light source) reflects off the surfaces of millions of falling ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds, for example, cirrostratus clouds. The ice crystals have roughly horizontal faces. They are falling through Earth’s atmosphere, rocking slightly from side to side.

When is the best time to see a sun pillar or light pillar? 

You’ll most often see sun pillars when the sun is low in the western sky before sunset, or low in the east just after the breaking of dawn. You might even see a sun pillar when the sun is below the horizon. Light pillars can be seen at any time of night.

They’re called sun pillars when the sun helps make them. But this the moon or even streetlights can create this light phenomenon, too, in which case the name light pillar is more appropriate.

These pillars of light often prompt people to report sightings of UFOs. They can sometimes look strange! There are said to be a lot of UFO reports caused by light pillars over Niagara Falls, where the mist from the rush of descending water interacts with the city’s many upward facing spotlights. Light pillars do appear frequently over Niagara Falls, especially during the winter.

Alien Invasion: What Would Aliens REALLY Want With The Earth?

Let’s put aside the questions as to whether or not we’ve been visited by aliens. Let’s ask a better question: Why would aliens visit us at all? Is there anything about Earth that makes us prone to an alien invasion?

An Alien Invasion has Occurred, But For What Reason?

While there’s plenty of talk of human-alien hybridization programs & plans to take over our government and make us slaves, do these ideas make any sense? I mean, if a far advanced alien race came here with the intent of making us slaves, they wouldn’t need to infiltrate our government to do so. They’d just… do it. They would just do it because they’re so advanced relative to us. So let’s explore the possibilities…

The Most Unlikely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

The first 2 scenarios really have good reasons why they’re unlikely. While they’re popular with hardcore alien enthusiasts, many of which believe these things are happening now or have in the past, a step back to reality doesn’t support these ideas. The likely scenarios are much more insidious and dire for humans in the event of a true alien invasion.

#1. Gold Mining

Gold is a very rare metal. For thousands of years, humans have mined it. We work for it. We kill for it. Aliens want gold too.

The idea is a cornerstone for Ancient Alien theorists. They believe that aliens came to the earth in ancient times to mine gold. In their desire for gold, they genetically modified ancient apes to make them more intelligent. The theory states that modern-day humans, us, are those genetically modified apes. Aliens designed us to have love and desire for gold so that we would mine it for them by our own ‘choice’.

The Argument for an Alien Gold Mining Operation

Truth be told, there isn’t much evidence in support of this theory. Everyone who reads this blog knows my stance on the Ancient Alien religion. It’s undeniable that humans have a love and obsession with gold. We also have a love and obsession with lots of pretty stones and shiny metals that aren’t gold.

The Reality – Gold isn’t THAT Rare

While gold is a rare metal by certain standards, there’s no reason to think Earth has more gold than other rocky planets. Gold can only be created during a supernova and any planets forming in the resulting cloud of heavy elements will have some gold on them. So does it really make sense that aliens would travel here specifically for gold? Probably not. The fact of the matter is that from the perspective of an interstellar species, gold isn’t that rare or hard to find.

Alien technology would be so great, they wouldn’t need human ‘slaves’ to mine gold for them. They’d have machines that can do it much faster. Additionally, there’s no reason why they would choose an inhabited planet to mine when there are so many uninhabited ones out there. If they did choose to mine an inhabited planet such as the Earth, they’d probably wipe out all life first so that they wouldn’t have to deal with all the ankle biting from the pesky humans.

#2. Hybridization for Their Dying Species

Another popular theory by alien-believers is that aliens are running a hybridization program. The theory postulates aliens are a dying species, abducting humans, and taking DNA to merge with their own in order to strengthen their own biology. Many people believe it’s already happening.

The Arguments for an Alien Hybridization Program

The proponents of the theory point to cases of alien abduction & cattle mutilations as evidence. Sightings of cryptids, such as the Chupacabra, are cited as examples of alien hybridization having gone wrong.

Additionally, many female abductees describe being artificially inseminated and forced to carry fetuses only to be abducted later and having it removed. Male abductees frequently describe having semen extracted from them by their alien abductors. Some folks claim to have had sexual encounters with extraterrestrials.

The Reality – You Don’t Need Much DNA for Hybridization

By far, the weakest part of the entire theory is that a little DNA goes a long way. A single human carries enough DNA information to hybridize an entire generation of extraterrestrials. Aside from the fact that many abduction cases can be dismissed as instances of sleep paralysis, continued abductions for 50+ years would be unnecessary.

It’s also worth noting that a species capable of interstellar travel would have learned how to genetically modify themselves without the need for samples from a relatively primordial species such as ourselves.

The Most Likely Scenarios for an Alien Invasion

This set of scenarios for an alien invasion take into account what science knows about intelligent life and how it behaves. Of course, we only have ourselves to look at, but you work with what you’ve got right? These scenarios which come from real scientists are much more disturbing than some of the fantasy stories tossed around by the ancient alien and conspiracy crowds.

#1. Their Own Earth-like Planet was Destroyed

What if aliens weren’t very different from us? What if they came from a planet just like ours in a neighboring solar system? Maybe their planet died or became uninhabitable, and the entire species took the skies looking for a new place to call home.

Woah, This One is Crazy to Think About

As a skeptic, this scenario for an alien invasion is mind blowing because it could actually happen. No planet lives forever. Our own Earth has gone through several mass extinction events and there’s no reason to think other planets would be any different.

We’d likely be powerless to stop it, and if our own history of exploration is any indication, it wouldn’t turn out very well for us humans. Think about what happened to the Native Americans when Europeans discovered the New World…

#2. Natural Resources that Support Carbon-Based Life

If there’s one thing more rare in the universe than gold and diamonds, it’s life. At least, life as we know it – carbon-based life. Life with all its associated proteins & fats is likely the rarest thing in the cosmos. We know this because we’ve looked around and not found it anywhere else.

Earth’s Natural Resources Would be a Figurative Goldmine

While it rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn, the compounds necessary to support carbon-based life are much rarer. Earth’s trees, plants, animals, & humans might be so rare in the universe that aliens could invade in order to use these sources of energy.

The rarity of life in the universe makes the Earth a prime candidate for aliens wishing to create a planetary zoo or to rule us. They could also potentially farm the life on Earth for food much as humans currently do.

#3. Dominance

It could simply be that a space-faring race may come to the earth simply to rule the population. Remember Superman 2? Political and social power can be addictive and satisfying to intelligent beings. The desire to rule may even be a common trait of all intelligent species.

The Desire to Rule Depends on the Aliens

The culture of the aliens who happen to find us really determines the likelihood of this scenario. By all counts, it’s a true alien invasion of the type only seen in movies and cinema. The takeover could be quick and violent, or it could be slow and shadowy. Proponents say it’s already happening. They point to reports of reptilian aliens infiltrating our government and big corporations as evidence.

#4. They Might Be Looking for a Planetary Zoo

Zoos are pretty cool. Maybe aliens think so too? Perhaps aliens wouldn’t actually invade the earth as much as keeping it ‘caged up’ for observation.

Another Very Possible Alien Invasion Scenario

Like the previous example, the planetary zoo is very possible. What’s really crazy? It might already be happening and we aren’t even aware of it.

#5. Food – Humans? Yummy!

There isn’t a single animal on this planet that humans won’t eat. We’ll eat anything except other humans (and there are even exceptions to that as well). Aliens might be the same way, especially if carbon-based life turns out to be a compatible food for their biology.

The Scariest Scenario of All: Humans = Cattle

Based our own behavior towards other animals, this scenario is highly likely. Perhaps, it’s the most likely of all. And it’s utterly terrifying. With advanced intelligence and technology, humans would be raised as cattle scarcely aware of our true purpose. We might live out our lives without so much as a hint of our grisly ends at the hands of our alien farmers.

Other Reasons?

We can only guess at the motives of our potential alien invaders. Perhaps the alien invasion will have nothing to do with us at all, or maybe it will have everything to do with us. Regardless, if aliens ever do come to meet us with technology millions of years ahead of us, we won’t have much say in the matter anyway. And that’s the scariest part of the entire thing.

One eager self-proclaimed UFO expert, an author by the name of Anthony Bragalia, is currently attempting to put pressure on the government to reveal one secret that they're reported to have locked away in their vaults; according to The New York Times, a secret military compound in Las Vegas contains a stockpile of rare otherworldly metal that has been collected from UFO crash sites.

Apparently, the metals that the government is holding on to are "unknown to science." The Times' article doesn't cite any specific proof on this point, but it's still managed to light some fires among the UFO truther community.

Eager to gain evidence one way or the other, Bragalia has taken things a step further by appealing to the government directly, under the US Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) which allows citizens to submit queries and receive transparent answers about official projects.

According to Bragalia:

"I have FOIA requests with five US Department of Defense agencies for the release of test results on UFO alloys that have been reported by The New York Times to be in the possession of the United States government."

This should go well.

It should probably be noted that there are plenty of exceptions to the FOIA. A citizen can't receive information on, say, operations and research that has been classified in the interest of public or military safety. It's not possible to receive an answer when using the Freedom of Information Act to ask about specific military procedures, in case that information falls into the wrong hands. Similarly, if the government is undertaking top-secret research into any scientific phenomenon, they're not going to happily spell out the details of the project to anybody who asks.

Thus, if the government does have magic metal from the wreckage of an alien spaceship, they're not going to disclose that information simply because Bragalia has asked nicely.

It seems that the UFO expert has already thought of this; Bragalia's contingency plan is to take to the courts if his FOIA requests are rejected, and he has stated that he is "willing and able to sue the US Government" to get hold of the information he desires.

He's certainly able to sue the government, and he may very well be willing to do so, but he's unlikely to win. Even if this weren't a spurious case, the government is hardly eager to have legal precedent in place that forces them to reveal all their secrets simply because someone is shouting loudly enough.

There is, though, another problem with this claim: according to actual, genuine scientists that spoke to Scientific American about the claims, it's preposterous that the US government would find any metal that would be "unknown to science".

Richard Sachleben, a member of the American Chemical Society's panel of experts said:

"I don't think it's plausible that there's any alloys that we can't identify. My opinion? That's quite impossible."

There is some very real, incredibly fascinating evidence to suggest that UFOs may in fact be real (although not necessarily from outer space). With this in mind, it's probably best for the sky-watching community to focus on what facts have been revealed, rather than trying to get the government to dish the dirt on a spurious and potentially fictitious theory that lacks a firm, reliable source.

At least, that's what the aliens want you to think...

Asteroids have been spitballing life juice at each other for billions of years, and we have the receipts.

Every meteorite that falls to Earth has an incredible story to tell about its extraterrestrial origins and interplanetary adventures. That’s particularly true of the 4.5 billion-year-old space rocks known as Monahans and Zag, which respectively landed in Texas and Morocco in 1998. Soon after their recovery, scientists detected microscopic pockets of water and halite (rock salt) crystals in the meteorites—a direct window into an ancient briny world from the solar system’s infancy.

Now, an extensive analysis of the meteorites led by Open University astrobiologist Queenie Chan reveals that these alien salt crystals contain organic matter, or “life’s precursor molecules,” as the team put it. These carbon compounds provide new insights into the distribution of prebiotic materials in the early solar system, while shedding light on the meteorites’ protracted and occasionally bumpy voyage to Earth.

The paper, out Wednesday in Science Advances, also marks the first time scientists have found organics in extraterrestrial samples that still contain liquid water, Chan told me over email. This is significant because water and organic matter are the key ingredients for life as we know it, and the paper suggests they may have been widespread on primitive worlds in the ancient solar system.

“Finding organic compounds in meteorites [and] other extraterrestrial samples is nothing new,” Chan said. “However, this study is unique in the sense that we have studied the organic material contained within the water-bearing salt crystals within the meteorites.”

Identifying these subtle compounds within the millimeter-scale crystals required an exhaustive experimental approach. Chan’s team scrutinized the samples with a wide range of advanced spectrometry, spectroscopy, microscopy, and liquid chromatography techniques to achieve their results. They detected carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen-bearing materials “exhibiting a wide range of structural order,” as well as “aromatic, ketone, imine, and/or imidazole compounds.”

The fact that this organic matter was locked inside these sapphire-colored crystals raises the tantalizing possibility that speculative alien beings, most likely in tiny microbe form, could be preserved the same way. Chan referred me to a 1988 studythat described terrestrial bacteria suspended in small liquid inclusions within salt crystals, so it’s not absurd to think extraterrestrial life could be likewise contained.

“If life formed elsewhere, there is such a possibility that it could be trapped in a way similar to that of the terrestrial setting,” Chan told me. “Bear in mind that, while the rich deposits of organic remnants recovered from the meteorites don’t provide any proof of life outside of Earth, finding abundant organic precursors associated with water indicates that complex chemical processes could have occurred.”

“This offers a significant implication for the context for the origin of life,” she added.

These organics also flesh out the backstory of the Zag and Monahans meteorites. The rocks are similar in composition to the carbonaceous surface of Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt, suggesting they probably originated on that world. Chan and her colleagues propose that hydrovolcanic activity on young Ceres produced brines, and when the water eventually evaporated, it left behind these salt crystals filled with organic molecules.

At some point, these hydrovolcanic disruptions on Ceres were forceful enough to blast the material into space, where exposure to ionizing radiation caused the crystals to turn that “beautiful blue color,” Chan said, which is “pretty unique in nature.”

The ejected material then impacted with another world, possibly the metal-rich asteroid Hebe, which imprinted its own signature of organics and amino acids into the meteorites. Finally, these intermixed samples were gently “stripped” from this asteroid by natural processes, and ended up on Earth some 20 years ago.

It’s pretty mind-boggling to retread this story of interworld hops, written in the chemical composition of the Zag and Monahans meteorites. What’s even trippier is the notion that these journeys may be quotidian, with similar exchanges likely occurring right now around some of the most promising candidates for life in our solar system.

“In the context of understanding moons such as Enceladus and Europa,” Chan’s team said in the study, “halite crystals formed from cryovolcanism and ejected into space represent an ideal sample to study prebiotic and possibly biotic processes on these bodies.”

It’s impossible to predict what first contact with an alien organism might look like, but with this comprehensive new paper, Chan and her colleagues have distinguished salt crystals embedded in world-hopping rocks as a smart bet.

Het team wetenschappers van de Duke universiteit in de Amerikaanse staat North Carolina stelt de eersten te zijn die dit klaarspeelt met stamcellen uit huidweefsel dat werd “geherprogrammeerd” naar jeugdig en veelzijdig spierweefsel.

Het gaat om ‘geïnduceerde pluripotente stamcellen’ of iPSC’s. Net als natuurlijke stamcellen in embryo’s kunnen ze eender welk type menselijke cel worden. In dit geval werden de iPSC’s overgehaald om skeletspiercellen te worden, die uitgroeiden tot ‘functionerende menselijke skeletspieren’, meldde het team in het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Nature Communications.

Spieren reageren op elektrische en chemische signalen

“Het heeft ons jaren proberen en falen gekost, met kleine stapjes richting functionerend menselijk spierweefsel uit die pluripotente stamcellen”, stelt mede-auteur van de studie Lingjun Rao.

De doorbraak werd mogelijk gemaakt door “unieke celcultuuromstandigheden” in het labo en een 3D-steiger die de cellen toeliet “sneller en langer te groeien” dan bij andere teams gebeurde, stelt Rao.

Het spierweefsel reageert op uitwendige stimuli zoals elektrische pulsen en chemische signalen.

Researchers close in on the reactions which fed the first life on Earth

New research is in hot pursuit of life’s first energy-producing reactions.

What’s life worth if one can’t enjoy a good meal, right? Or, failing that, any meal at all? Not very much, since our bodies need to turn that food into fuel to keep going — and they have very sophisticated mechanisms on hand to do just that.

Our cells turn oxygen organic compounds, especially sugars, into energy and CO2 through a process known as cellular respiration. You may have been told in school that mitochondria, the specialized organelles which handle cellular respiration, ‘burn’ food to release energy, and that’s a pretty functional illustration of the process. The whole picture is, however, much larger that.

Energy-producing mechanisms in our body are often referred to as cycles — one of the most common ones is the citric acid / Krebs cycle. These are usually very complicated processes, and as such, are very difficult to wrap your head around and study them in the lab. Which is a pain if you’re the kind of scientist who’s trying to understand how these cycles came to be, where they first started from, and how they evolved. However, new research could offer these researchers the lucky break they need.

A team led by Greg Springsteen, Professor at the Chemistry Department of Furman University, South Carolina, has identified what seems to be an ancient precursor of the citric acid cycle, one that could exist in the much less-refined conditions of early Earth and sustained early life.

“It’s akin to looking at a modern roadway like Route 66,” Springsteen, who’s also affiliated with NASA Center for Chemical Evolution, Atlanta, explains.

“Wagon trails were templates for Route 66. The twists and turns of the modern pathways tell us about the challenges of the original route.”

The Krebs cycle works with a chemical known as pyruvate through a series of reactions over which the molecule changes its form (through subsequent addition/removal of atoms and molecules). The end results are energy and chemical bits and pieces to be used in other reactions throughout the body. Since organisms need a lot of energy, the Krebs cycle is propped up by specially-designed enzymes which make every step in the reaction go buttery-smooth. Because of all these extras pitching in, it can be hard to figure out how the cycle looked initially, and what chemicals could have sustained the process before the enzymes came along.

However, the team, which also included members from the Scripps Research Institute in California and two undergrads at Furman, found two compounds which could maintain a Krebs-like cycle in experiments mimicking conditions on early Earth. Christened the HKG- and malonate-cycles, the team says these processes are likely very similar to the pre-life versions of the reactions that keep us alive today.

They’re hugely less efficient than the Krebs cycle, but that was to be expected, given the lack of supportive enzymes. More importantly, however, they’re based on a similar chemical blueprint — both cycles turn a molecule called glyoxylate into CO2 and other molecules in the presence of an electron-capturing agent. They’re so similar, the authors’ hypothesis is that biology picked them up as it was and simply tweaked and improved upon them, leading to the reactionary cycles we see today.

“We think biology mapped itself onto preexisting chemical pathways on the early Earth,” said Springsteen.

As exciting as the findings may be, take them with a grain of salt. The team doesn’t yet have much to offer in regards to how the cycles evolved over time into today’s Krebs’, and they’re yet to find the reactions occurring naturally or to prove that they did so before life took hold on Earth. Still, the two new cycles have a lot going for them — the reactions occur in a neutral (not acidic or basic) environment and in a mild temperature range. “There were environments on the early Earth where these reactions were reasonable,” the authors note.

At the very least, they give us a possible starting point from which to expand our search.

The paper “Linked cycles of oxidative decarboxylation of glyoxylate as protometabolic analogs of the citric acid cycle” has been published in the journal Nature.

Japanese astronaut didn’t actually grow 3½” taller after only three weeks in space [UPDATE]

Free from the pressure of gravity, the spine can relax and temporarily expand almost like an unwinded coiled spring. This is why all astronauts stationed at the International Space Station grow taller during their stint there. But the case of Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai, who arrived at the station on Dec. 19, 2017, was extreme by all accounts, though. In the three weeks since he arrived at the ISS, Kanai claimed he had grown a staggering 3½ inches (9 centimeters) — the most he’s “grown in 3 weeks since junior high school,” the astronaut tweeted.

Typically, a normal stint at the International Space Station will see people grow about two inches taller. But every human body is different and sometimes you get these freak occurrences at the high end of the bracket.

“Good morning, everybody,” Kanai wrote on twitter. “I have a major announcement today. We had our bodies measured after reaching space, and wow, wow, wow, I had actually grown by as much as 9cm!”

“I am a little worried I won’t fit in my seat on the return trip on Soyuz,” Kanai said more jokingly than serious.

Each seat on the Russian Soyuz TMA spacecraft actually molds to the body of each astronaut to ensure a tight fit during atmospheric re-entry which can be quite the bumpy ride. You can’t be taller than 6 feet 3″ to hitch a ride, which is why anyone around that limit isn’t allowed to the ISS.

After receiving so much media coverage, Kanai’s captain questioned the astronaut about his height and the two performed a new measurement. Turns out Kanai’s initial measurement was WAY off. Apparently, the 41-year-old Japanese astronaut had stretched only 2 cm from his Earth-bound height.

Kanai tweeted: “This mis-measurement appears to have become a big deal, so I must apologize for this terrible fake news … It appears I can fit on the Soyuz, so I‘m relieved.”

Kanai didn’t explain how he arrived at this ‘mis-measurement’ but it sure is weird  After all, he is an astronaut — a person who is trained in avionics and space engineering, which should entail being able to tell an inch from three inches.

The real talk

If growing a couple inches taller might sound appealing to some of you, know that it’s only temporary since astronauts slip back to their normal height once they touch down on Earth. Actually, growing taller can only mean trouble in space where every cubic inch counts.

Growing tall on the ISS is a fleeting experience but there are really far more concerning effects zero gravity has on the human body. Scientists are only beginning to understand what long-term weightlessness is doing to human biology but already we know some things aren’t good at all. For instance, astronauts hurt their vision since the retina gets pushed forward, arteries can become clogged due to plaque buildup, and thousands of genes switch on and off. 

If humanity ever becomes a space-faring species, we shall have to confront the effects of weightlessness and conquer them. In the meantime, stints made by brave astronauts on the ISS will teach us many valuable lessons.
