This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Three Massive Meteor Explosions in 9 Days

The mystery of three recent earth-shaking explosions in Russia, Dallas and the U.S. Midwest is not their cause – even diehard skeptics are calling them meteors or bolides. What’s mysterious is why such unusually violent and visible space rock events occurred in a space of just nine days. Where is NASA’s meteor alert team? Are we in the middle of an undiscovered meteor shower? Should we expect more? Does Home Depot sell meteor-proof sheds?

On the night of January 7th, 2018, a deep blue light crossed over the heavily-populated, southwestern Russia republics of Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstanin. As is the case in Russia, the incident was picked up on dash cams, showing the darkness change briefly to light as the blue flash passed overhead. The Siberian Times reports the usual denials of manmade responsibly by the Russian military and space program, which are plausible since few if any witnesses reported hearing an explosion or any other sound. Astronomers disagreed on possible causes, with Yuri Nefefyev of the Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory blaming atmospheric electricity, while Sergey Golovkin of the Kazan Federal University Physics Institute speculating it was a bolide that burned up completely in the atmosphere and never hit land. Plenty of pictures … no explanations. That sounds like Russia.

But not Dallas where, on January 12th at around 8:34 pm, a huge boom was heard, with some witnesses reporting a bright flash first and the feeling of percussion afterwards. While there were just a few security cameras catching the event, the video was enough to convince astronomer Ron DiIulio from the University of North Texas that it was either a meteorite or a piece of space debris. Based on the flash and the sound of the sonic boom, Dilulio figured the ‘thing’ was about the size of a grapefruit … far smaller than whatever passed over those Russian republics.

It was probably far smaller than whatever it was that passed over southeastern Michigan on January 16th shortly after 8 pm. Reports of the flash came in to the American Meteor Societyfrom Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada, but the object appears to have hit the atmosphere and broken apart over New Haven, Michigan. While NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office estimated the asteroid to be no more than two yards in diameter when it began breaking up. At least one piece landed in Livingston County, with either the impact or the sonic boom registering as a magnitude 2.0 earthquake.

Three large, multi-witness, explosion-causing meteorites in different parts of the world over a nine-day period. Could they be related? There’s no known meteor shower underway that could have caused them. While the events seem huge to the witnesses, these space rocks were too small to be picked up by the various early warning systems. The old Chinese space station hasn’t dipped low enough to cause any of these. Is it just coincidence or could it be something else?

Should we be worried about this increase in the frequency of large meteorites? With the frequency of incoming missile false alarms lately, the answer is obvious.

What are these rays of energy beamed down lightning the ground in Michigan?

At exactly the same time a meteor flashed through the sky in Michigan, the United States Geological Survey reported a 2.0 magnitude earthquake at 8:09 p.m. January 16, 2018.

The mean stream media will have you to believe it was a meteor, but images taken at the moment of the “meteor” event showing something else what seems to be a precise ray of energy beamed down lighting the ground on fire and so far I know a meteor cannot fell at a perfect 90 degrees angle says investigator Jeffery Pritchett.

Not only it seems like two separate incidents have happened on the same day, the meteor did not caused the 2.0 magnitude earthquake, said William Yeck, a research geophysicist at the US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado.
A meteor that explodes in the sky can be explained, (if it was a meteor) but a 2.0 magnitude earthquake and rays of energy beams is something that seems impossible to happen at the same time.

There’s a lot of discussion going on what might have been the rays of energy beams in particular. Was it just the meteor, an energy weapon or it has something to do with an upcoming space war?

Or could it be, according to a mind-bending new Aerospace Defence Forces (ADF) report that circulated in the Kremlin two days ago and says that no known modern scientific explanation can be found as to why one of the oldest discovered comets in our solar system, named 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák, has mysteriously slowed down to a near stop and began “firing” at Earth with its first “electrical discharge strike”(commonly known as the “Electric Universe Theory”) occurring on 7 January over vast regions of Eastern Russia turning the night sky electric blue and shaking the ground, its then striking Texas, on 10 January, turning the night sky to daylight and shaking the ground and, on 16 January, striking large regions of the United States—most particularly in Michigan.

Researchers in Mexico find the largest underwater archaeological site in the world

Rejoice archaeology, fans researchers in Mexico have discovered what is considered the largest underwater archaeological site on the planet.

One of the lesser-known corners of the Mayan underworld has finally come to light.

The most extensive system of flooded caves ever recorded has been discovered in Tulum, in the Mexican Riviera Maya.

Some of the artifacts discovered by divers.

A group of explorers of the Mayan Great Aquifer project has found that the Sac Actún and Dos Ojos systems are connected, which has opened a new passage in an underground labyrinth that measures about 347 kilometers. The researchers have found hundreds of archeological objects that show a robust Mayan culture presence in the region, as well as extinct animals.

“This immense cave system represents the most important submerged archaeological site in the world,” says Guillermo de Anda, specialist of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and director of the research.

The cenotes (from the Maya word dzonoot), as the immense natural pits, sinkholes or eyes of water are referred to in Mexico, occupied a central place in the Mayan cosmogony.

They were revered as the underworld and the third level of the Mayan universe, after heaven and earth, but without a negative connotation like hell in Christianity.

The ancient Maya considered this a ‘very powerful, magical region, where the supernatural reigns, where the gods and deities lived, where good and bad coexist, and it was also where men came from,’ says De Anda.

The cenotes were, in the words of the researcher, “the main stage of the myth of creation” of that civilization, which extended from the southeast of Mexico to Honduras and El Salvador.

Furthermore, the findings give an account of that mystical sense.

The massive underwater cave system is a treasure trove containing the history of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Researchers found remains of Mayan pottery vessels, objects that date back to colonial times and funerary or sacrificial contexts, which researchers are still analyzing.

There were also human remains and a large number of animals such as giant sloths, bears, tigers and ancient horses.

“It is a time tunnel, which transports us into a time 12,000 and 10,000 years ago,” says De Anda.

The difficult access to the cenotes has helped that the archaeological materials are preserved in optimal conditions for their study, without alterations or wear by the contact of men.

Researchers at the Great Maya Aquifer needed ten months to decipher the connection between the two flooded cave systems, which they have described as an “intense” work season that began in March of last year.

Some members of the team, such as head diver Robert Schmittner, have spent more than 20 years scouring the underwater galleries and 14 years looking for the connection between the great caverns.

“We had come very close before, we were once a meter away from connecting both systems,” says Schmittner.

“It was like walking the veins of a body, a labyrinth of paths that joined and separated and we had to be very careful,” the diver added while speaking about the water passages, which in some cases were only one meter deep, having also deeper parts reaching 120 meters underground.

    Historic discovery. Image credit: Reuters.

The discovery was made on January 10 and being united; the “new” system has adopted the name of Sac Actún (from the Maya ‘white cave’), the larger of the two and the Dos Ojos system has ceased to exist.

Sac Actún was until a couple of days ago the second largest system of cenotes, behind Ox Bel Ha that translates into Spanish as three waterways, which measures about 270 kilometers and is also located in the Riviera Maya.

Despite the finding, the researchers continue exploring the connections of Sac Actún with two other underground systems.

It is estimated that only in the north of Quintana Roo, in the Yucatan Peninsula, there are 1,400 underground kilometers of fresh water, spread over 358 systems, according to the speleological survey of the southern Mexican state. The next steps are the analysis of groundwater and the study of diversity, as well as the adoption of measures to help conserve the site.

Scientists to use robots to look inside the hidden, never-before-seen chamber in the Great Pyramid

With the help of small robots, scientists will try to decipher what secrets are hidden inside the cavities recently discovered in the Great Pyramid of Giza. This exploration process will also see scientists irremediably damage a fraction of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Are we on the edge of one of the most important archaeological finds of the century?

Many researchers are convinced we are about to make an unprecedented discovery inside the Pyramid, one that may shed light on the real reason the great Pyramids was built in the first place.

This is the ‘Great Void’ inside the Great Pyramid which may hide a mystery throne made of Alien material.

Using muon detectors and thermal scanning, the ScanPyramid project reported the discovery of two previously unknown cavities within the Great Pyramid in November of 2017.

The largest cavity is at least 30 meters long and is located on the giant corridor (Grand Gallery) that extends to the king’s chamber. The smaller cavity, on the other hand, is located behind the north face of the pyramid and consists of a corridor whose length is uncertain.

Now, researchers plan to carry out more tests with muon detectors and are developing robots, miniature robots, that will have the ability to look inside the cavities by means of high-resolution cameras.

Currently little or nothing is known about the cavities inside the monument.

When the Pyramid was finished, this is what it may have looked like.

“There is a big difference in whether the shape of the major cavity is horizontal or has an inclination,” said Mehdi Tayoubi, president, and co-founder of the Institute for the Preservation and Innovation of Cultural Heritage, one of the institutions involved in the ScanPyramid project.

“If the cavity is tilted, for example, it could be a corridor similar to the Grand Gallery. But if it is horizontal, then we would be faced with the presence of one or more cameras never explored before.“

“In addition, the smallest cavity, which is presumed to be a passageway, may have been connected to a larger cavity in ancient times,” he added.

Damaging an ancient monument in the name of science

    https://youtu.be/Et4lkbikySA

As the new tests with muon detectors begin, another team led by Jean-Baptiste Mouret, a researcher at the French National Institute for Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, will build two robots that will perform an “invasive exploration” of the alleged secret chambers.

According to Mouret, his team will make a small perforation of 3.8 centimeters in circumference to break through and insert the robots into the cavities.

“First we will make a reconnaissance, for this we will send a robot in the form of a tube with a panoramic sweeping camera and lights. The objective is to probe what is on the other side of the wall and obtain high-resolution images.”

“If there is something promising on the other side, then we will extract the recognition robot and insert the explorer robot. For this last ingenuity, we are designing an inflatable airship that is compressed during insertion and inflated remotely once inside the chamber, “explains the French researcher.

“The airship will allow the robot to fly and take pictures more quickly and efficiently, without the need to move on the ground.”

Before the robots begin their work, scientists must gather more data on the dimensions and location of the chambers something that could take more than a year—in order to know where to drill the access hole.

Likewise, the Ministry of Antiquities must give final approval to begin the task that will irremediably damage a tiny fraction of the Great Pyramid.

“We are working hard on the design of the robot to generate as little damage as possible.

We hope to be able to convince the Ministry of Antiquities that this is the right technology for the next step. Meanwhile, we will use the time to test our robots in other places,” concludes Mouret.

“Immortality Drive”: A Time Capsule Carrying ‘Immortal DNA’ That’s Safeguarded On The ISS

When Richard Garriott traveled to the ISS in 2008, he decided to carry along the so-called ‘immortality drive,’ a microchip specifically designed to function as a futuristic time capsule should a catastrophic event happen on Earth. The Immortality drive includes a list of some of humanity’s greatest achievements; as well as messages and writing from Earth. The time capsule also includes the digitized DNA sequences of countless personalities from Earth, from Professor Stephen Hawking, comedian Stephen Colbert to Garriott himself.

The immortality drive, a futuristic time capsule that will keep our species ‘alive’ in case of a catastrophic event on Earth. That is, of course, someone or something recovers the Immortality Drive before the Space Station comes crashing to Earth due to lack of engine maintenance.

The natural human impulse of life and subsistence has been shaped through cultures at every moment of history. Evidence of that is our civilization. If we look back at history, from the first cave paintings, o the most advanced scientific research, man has always sought immortality. We looked at the Gods as immortal beings, powerful deities and we’ve always wanted to be like the gods. Immortal. Powerful. Untouchable. Preserved in the universe for an infinite time.

Now, there’s a chance we might actually be preserved as a species for future millennia.

Perhaps the most important point of mankind’s search for immortality is represented by the project “Immortality Drive”, which has created an immortal DNA capable of being stored forever.

The video game designer and pioneer of space tourism, Richard Garriott, developed a microchip that stores the sequenced coding of the DNA of several people, selected for various reasons, but perhaps mainly to function as a backup of the human species, in case of extinction.

The device will act as our species’ time capsule, which will make sure that our history is recorded in the universe, for anyone to find.

The immortality drive, which is basically a large memory device was launched to the international space station on board the Soyuz 1 spacecraft in 2008.

The microchip also contains a copy of George’s Secret Key to the Universe, a children’s book authored by Stephen Hawking and his daughter, Lucy.

Oh but… due to the fact that the Immortality drive is stored on board the ISS, if humanity does go extinct, someone or something would actually have to enter the ISS and recover the drive before the space station goes crashing into Earth due to a lack of engine maintenance.

Among other personalities, the genetic information of Stephen Hawkins is included in the immortality drive. The cosmic time capsule also features Entrepreneurs: • Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, Pownce, and Revision3 • Tim Draper, venture capitalist and viral marketing innovator • Robert Scoble, technology evangelist and business blogger.

Athletes: • Scott Johnson, Olympic gold medal gymnast • Matt Morgan, American Gladiator and professional wrestler.

Speed of universe’s expansion remains elusive

Discrepancy between measures of Hubble constant suggests influence of some astronomical unknown

    SN 2011fe

In August of 2011, researchers discovered SN 2011fe, a type 1a supernova 21 million light-years away in galaxy M101 (images show the galaxy before and after the supernova, with the supernova circled at right). Studies using type 1a supernovas as “standard candles” to measure how fast the universe expands (the Hubble constant) produce a result in conflict with other data used to infer the cosmic growth rate.

Unless you are a recent arrival from another universe, you’ve no doubt heard that this one is expanding. It’s getting bigger all the time. What’s more, its growth rate is accelerating. Every day, the universe expands a little bit faster than it did the day before.

Those day-to-day differences are negligible, though, for astronomers trying to measure the universe’s expansion rate. They want to know how fast it is expanding “today,” meaning the current epoch of cosmic history. That rate is important for understanding how the universe works, knowing what its ultimate fate will be and even what it is made of. After all, the prime mission of the Hubble Space Telescope when it was launched in 1990 was to help determine that expansion rate (known, not coincidentally, as the Hubble constant, named for the astronomer Edwin Hubble).

Since then evidence from Hubble (the telescope) and other research projects has established a reasonably precise answer for the Hubble constant: 73, in the units commonly used for this purpose. (It means that two independent astronomical bodies separated by 3.26 million light-years will appear to be moving away from each other at 73 kilometers per second.) Sure, there’s a margin of error, but not much. The latest analysis from one team, led by Nobel laureate Adam Riess, puts the Hubble constant in the range of 72–75, as reported in a paper posted online January 3. Considering that as late as the 1980s astronomers argued about whether the Hubble constant was closer to 40 or 90, that’s quite an improvement in precision.

But there’s a snag in this success. Current knowledge of the universe suggests a way to predict what the Hubble constant ought to be. And that prediction gives a probable range of only 66–68. The two methods don’t match.

“This is very surprising, I think, and very interesting,” Riess, of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, said in a talk January 9 at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

It’s surprising because astrophysicists and cosmologists thought they had pretty much figured the universe out. It’s made up of a little bit of ordinary matter, a lot of some exotic “dark matter” of unknown identity, and even more of a mysterious energy permeating the vacuum of space, exerting gravitational repulsion. Remember that acceleration of the expansion rate? It implies the existence of such energy. Because nobody knows what it is, people call it “dark energy,” while suspecting that its real name is lambda, the Greek letter that stands for “cosmological constant.” (It’s called a constant because any part of space should possess the same amount of vacuum energy.) Dark energy contributes something like 70 percent of the total mass-energy content of the universe, various lines of evidence indicate.

If all that’s right, then it’s not all that hard to infer how fast the universe should be expanding today. You just take the recipe of matter, dark matter and dark energy and add some ghostly subatomic particles known as neutrinos. Then you carefully measure the temperature of deep space, where the only heat is the faint glow remaining from the Big Bang. That glow, the cosmic microwave background radiation, varies slightly in temperature from point to point. From the size of those variations, you can calculate how far the radiation from the Big Bang has been traveling to reach our telescopes. Combine that with the universe’s mass-energy recipe, and you can calculate how fast the universe is expanding. (You can, in fact, do this calculation at home with the proper mathematical utensils.)

An international team’s project using cosmic microwave background data inferred a Hubble constant of 67, substantially less than the 73 or 74 based on actually measuring the expansion (by analyzing how the light from distant supernova explosions has dimmed over time).

When this discrepancy first showed up a few years ago, many experts believed it was just a mirage that would fade with more precise measurement. But it hasn’t.

“This starts to get pretty serious,” Riess said at the astronomy meeting. “In both cases these are very mature measurements. This is not the first time around for either of these projects.”

One commonly proposed explanation contends that the supernova studies are measuring the local value of the Hubble constant. Perhaps we live in a bubble, with much less matter than average, skewing expansion measurements. In that case, the cosmic microwave background data might provide a better picture of the “global” expansion rate for the whole universe. But supernovas observed by the Hubble telescope extend far enough out to refute that possibility, Riess said.

“Even if you thought we lived in a void…, you still are basically stuck with the same problem.”

Consequently it seems most likely that something is wrong with the matter-energy recipe for the universe (technically, the cosmological standard model) used in making the expansion rate prediction. Maybe the vacuum energy driving cosmic acceleration is not a cosmological constant after all, but some other sort of field filling space. Such a field could vary in strength over time and throw off the calculations based on a constant vacuum energy. But Riess pointed out that the evidence is growing stronger and stronger that the vacuum energy is just the cosmological constant. “I would say there we have less and less wiggle room.”

Another possibility, appealing to many theorists, is the existence of a new particle, perhaps a fourth neutrino or some other relativistic (moving very rapidly) particle zipping around in the early universe.

“Relativistic particles — theorists have no trouble inventing new ones, ones that don’t violate anything else,” Riess said. “Many of them are quite giddy about the prospect of some evidence for that. So that would not be a long reach.”

Other assumptions built into the current cosmological standard model might also need to be revised. Dark matter, for example, is presumed to be very aloof from other forms of matter and energy. But if it interacted with radiation in the early universe, it could have an effect similar to that of relativistic particles, changing how the energy in the early universe is divided up among its components. Such a change in energy balance would alter how much the universe expands at early times, corrupting the calibrations needed to infer the current expansion rate.

It’s not the first time that determining the Hubble constant has provoked controversy. Edwin Hubble himself initially (in the 1930s) vastly overestimated the expansion rate. Using his rate, calculations indicated that the universe was much younger than the Earth, an obvious contradiction. Even by the 1990s, some Hubble constant estimates suggested an age for the universe of under 10 billion years, whereas many stars appeared to be several billion years older than that.

Hubble’s original error could be traced to lack of astronomical knowledge. His early overestimates turned out to be signals of a previously unknown distinction between different generations of stars, some younger and some older, Riess pointed out. That threw off distance estimates to some stars that Hubble used to estimate the expansion rate. Similarly, in the 1990s the expansion rate implied too young a universe because dark energy was not then known to exist and therefore was not taken into account when calculating the universe’s age.

So the current discrepancy, Riess suggested, might also be a signal of some astronomical unknown, whether a new particle, new interactions of matter and radiation, or a phenomenon even more surprising — something that would really astound a visitor from another universe.

Professor Stephen Hawking Reveals 3 Ways We Can Travel In Time

So… time travel is possible… at least theoretically.

Traveling in time has been one of the greatest fantasies of the human being for centuries. It is a popular trend in movies and science fiction series, and the idea has inspired novels from Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Tale, to Charlton Heston’s The Planet of the Apes masterpiece.

So… is time travel achievable? If we take a look at the last couple of years, we will notice quite a few scientific studies that have researched the idea of traveling in time.

We’ve written about the idea of time travel, and the studies which have looked into the possibility of traveling in time quite a few times in the past.

We covered an article that suggests how scientists found out that ‘mathematically’ time travel is possible.

“People think of time travel as something as fiction. And we tend to think it’s not possible because we don’t do it,” said Ben Tippett, a physicist, and mathematician from the University of British Columbiasaid in a UBC news release, adding “But, mathematically, it is possible.”

According to a number of scientists, there are ways by which we could travel in time.

By using Einstein’s Theory of General relativity as the basis for a hypothetical device which they named a Traversable Acausal Retrograde Domain in Space-time (TARDIS), scientists have come up with a mathematical model of a theoretical time machine box that has the ability to move back and forth through space and time.

Interesting comments about Time travel were made by Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel of Lewis & Clark College wrote the Forbes blog Starts With A Bang: “While we still haven’t discovered the conditions we need to travel back in time and find the necessary means by which we can create a large enough system for humans to do so, ‘nothing is forbidding it’ in the laws of theoretical physics.”

But perhaps the scientist who most embraces the idea of time travel as a possibility is astrophysicist Professor Stephen Hawking who suggests there are three ways we can travel in time.

According to the famous British astrophysicist, there are at least three (hypothetical) ways in which it would be possible to travel through time.

The first one would be to travel in time through a wormhole, a central figure of theoretical physics that quantumly represents a point in spacetime that connects with another. If we were to find a way to enter a Wormhole, we could then create a tunnel between two points in space-time.

The second theory according to Professor Hawking would only allow us to travel to the future, and it would mean the traveler would have to approach a black hole, capable of dramatically slowing down time, and then returning to Earth, where time would have passed normally.

Finally, the British scientist proposes that the most viable alternative to building a time machine would be to build a device capable of moving around the Earth at the speed of light, which would allow the life of its passengers on board to pass 7 thousand times faster than on Earth, allowing a shift to the future.

How massive can neutron stars be?

Settling a long debate, astrophysicists at Goethe University Frankfurt now say neutron stars can’t exceed the mass of 2.16 suns.

Gravitational-wave emission from a collapsing star, via Goethe University.

In 2016, when the twin LIGO detectors made their first historic observation of gravitational waves, astronomers heralded the news both as a confirmation of Einstein’s general relativity and also because, as they love to say, the detection:

… opened a new window on the cosmos.

And indeed that window has begun to crack. On January 16, 2018, astrophysicists at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany described how they used observations of gravitational waves to answer a question that’s plagued scientists since the 1960s, when they first discovered neutron stars, or stars composed predominantly of closely packed neutrons. By definition, a neutron star has a very small radius (about the diameter of an earthly city) and very high density (a teaspoon of neutron star material would weigh about 10 million tons). A typical neutron star mass is about 1.4 suns.

Notice all the abouts in those last couple of sentences? Now, for the first time, astrophysicists are saying they’ve succeeded in putting more precision into those numbers, by calculating a strict upper limit for the maximum mass of neutron stars. They say that, with an accuracy of a few percent, the maximum mass of non-rotating neutron stars cannot exceed 2.16 solar masses.

The research results were published in the peer-reviewed Astrophysical Journal Letters, and, according to these scientists:

Just a few days later, research groups from the USA and Japan confirmed the findings, despite having so far followed different and independent approaches.

What happens to a neutron star that does exceed its mass limit? In that case, the neutron star collapses into an even more compressed and vastly more exotic object known as a black hole.

Physicist Luciano Rezzolla at Goethe University Frankfurt and his students Elias Most and Lukas Weih conducted the study. Their statement explained:

The basis for this result was the ‘universal relations’ approach [described here] developed in Frankfurt a few years ago. The existence of ‘universal relations’ implies that practically all neutron stars ‘look alike,’ meaning that their properties can be expressed in terms of dimensionless quantities. The researchers combined these ‘universal relations’ with data on gravitational-wave signals and the subsequent electromagnetic radiation (kilonova) obtained during the observation last yearof two merging neutron stars in the framework of the LIGO experiment.

In the near-term future, these scientists expect more observations via gravitational-wave astronomy, which will further reduce uncertainties about neutron stars’ maximum mass. In the meantime, they said, their result is a good example of the interaction between theoretical and experimental research. Rezzolla commented:

The beauty of theoretical research is that it can make predictions. Theory, however, desperately needs experiments to narrow down some of its uncertainties. It’s therefore quite remarkable that the observation of a single binary neutron star merger that occurred millions of light-years away – combined with the universal relations discovered through our theoretical work – have allowed us to solve a riddle that has seen so much speculation in the past.

Bottom line: Settling a long debate, astrophysicists at Goethe University Frankfurt now say neutron stars can’t exceed the mass of 2.16 suns. Add more mass, and a neutron star becomes a black hole.

Meteor lit up Michigan night skies

A brilliant fireball lit up skies in the U.S. state of Michigan Tuesday night and caused the equivalent of a magnitude 2.0 earthquake.

Lucky skywatchers were dazzled by a brilliant fireball that briefly lit up the night sky over Michigan and neighboring states on Tuesday (January 16, 2018) and caused the equivalent of a magnitude 2.0 earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The American Meteor Society has received 398 reports of the fireball, which happened at 8:10 p.m. CST (01:10 UTC). The fireball was seen primarily from Michigan but was also seen from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Ontario (Canada). According to the American Meteor Society:

This was a very slow moving meteor – speed of about 28,000 miles per hour (45,000km/hour). This fact, combined with the brightness of the meteor (which suggests a fairly big space rock), shows that the object penetrated deep into the atmosphere before it broke apart (which produced the sounds heard by at least 77 observers). It is likely that there are meteorites on the ground near this region.

Here are some of the social media reports:

BREAKING: What is being described as a “meteor re-entry” caused a large flash of light and loud noise heard across Michigan, Chicago, and Windsor.

Cape Town Is Set to Run Out of Water in Less Than One Hundred Days

    Dwindling Supplies

Over the past three years, a lot has changed for the city of Cape Town. Seated in a geologic bowl beneath Table Mountain and historically fed by heavy winter precipitation, the South African metropolis has been known as a haven of abundant natural water. This year, however, Cape Town may be the first major city in the world to run out of water.

A three-year drought in the region around Cape Town has caused levels in its water-supplying dams to drop dangerously low. Experts have predicted that the city will reach “day zero,” a point at which the dams drop below 13.5 percent of their combined capacity, on April 21.

If that happens, all non-emergency municipal water supplies will be turned off except in the poorest neighborhoods. Residents will be required to source their water from one of 200 available collection sites. Each resident will have access to 6.6 gallons per day, a maximum enforced by armed guards charged with keeping the peace.

For now, the city is working on water recycling projects and constructing three desalination plants, which they hope to have up and running by March. It is also enforcing a water limit of 23 gallons per person per day.

Time Magazine reports that the Cape Town drought has led to a backlog of orders for water storage tanks, and according to the publication, “unwashed hair is now a symbol of upright citizenship” in the city.

In a controversial move, Cape Town has even produced a live water-monitoring mapthat displays how much water properties are using in order to encourage — or shame — residents into matching their neighbors’ good habits.

“The potential water-saving benefit for all of Cape Town of making water consumption indicators publicly available outweighs any privacy issues at this stage of the crisis,” Zara Nicholson‚ spokesperson for Mayor Patricia de Lille, told Cape Town Etc. “This behavior-modification tool attempts to acknowledge good savers and encourage those who have yet to join the efforts.”

    Climate Change, Today

If the situation caused by the Cape Town drought sounds like the beginning of a Mad Max-esque dystopia to you, you’re not alone.

Regional residents have expressed astonishment and fear over the coming crisis. Some have even protested what they believe was a failure by the Cape Town government to address the problem, all amidst a growing corruption scandalconcerning the Cape Town mayor.

Above all else, the Cape Town drought and its implications for residents may be a stark reminder that climate change is not a future concern — it’s a reality of our present, happening at this very moment.

As with any single weather or climate event, it’s difficult to blame the Cape Town drought solely on our dependence on fossil fuels. Climate change just isn’t that simple. Yet just as experts are making progress in connecting individual events, such as hurricanes, to climate change, analysis has shown that Cape Town’s regional drought was likely worsened by human actions.

The chances of extreme drought are increasing in the Western Cape region overall. While wet and snowy years will still happen, the area is trending toward being dry and drought-prone. Local climate trends certainly have something to do with this, but so do globally increasing temperatures and shifting weather patterns.

Indeed, research has found that hotter, drier weather is becoming more common across the globe.

One study predicts that nearly 74 percent of global populations will be threatened by dangerous heatwaves by the close of the century, and we could even see record-high summer temperatures every other year as soon as 2030. In 2015, NASA satellite data found that one-third of global groundwater reservoirs were over-stressed by human use, suggesting a grim outcome if we do not learn to use water more sustainably.

Cape Town is just one example of these predictions spilling over into reality.

Belangrijkste archeologische onderwatervondst ter wereld gedaan in Mexico.

Chinese Scientists Want to Put a Giant Laser in Space to Zap Space Junk

Orbital pollution might not enjoy the attention and awareness that other inevitable catastrophic disasters like climate change or asteroid impacts do, but it won’t be long before humanity will have to confront the fact that according to NASA estimates, over half a million pieces of debris are currently spinning around the Earth at speeds up to 17,500 mph. Most are smaller than a marble, but a few tens of thousands of objects are believed to be the size of a softball or larger. Given the scope of the orbital pollution problem, it’s kind of a miracle that orbital pollution has yet to cause a major catastrophe either in space or down here in gravity land. Space junk does occasionally fall to Earth unannounced, or even announced as in the case of the Chinese Tiangong-1 space station which is set to fall to Earth sometime soon wherever it happens to end up. Here’s hoping I don’t win that lottery.

Chinese space agencies aren’t sure when – or where – the space station will come down.

Speaking of Chinese space junk, scientists at China’s Air Force Engineering University have developed a new concept they believe could help clear up the increasingly cluttered zone of space surrounding our planet. The concept involves a satellite housing an incredibly powerful laser which could autonomously detect and hone in on individual pieces of space junk, obliterating them into dust or blowing them far out of Earth’s orbit.

A picture of orbital debris taken during the first mission to the ISS sparked a host of theories about an alien "black knight" satellite.

A picture of orbital debris taken during the first mission to the ISS sparked a host of theories about an alien “black knight” satellite.

The technology hasn’t been tested yet, but the Chinese scientists have conducted simulations which serve as a proof of concept for their idea. According to their publication in The International Journal for Light and Electron Optics, the researchers believe their simulation “provides necessary theoretical basis for the deployment of space-based laser station and the further application of space debris removal by using space-based laser.” Hmm…space based laser you say…

    What could go wrong?

    What could go wrong?

While ridding the Earth of its orbital pollution problem sounds great and all, the concept isn’t without its critics. Military watchdogs have noted that China (as well as all the other superpowers) have been busy testing space weaponry designed to take out adversaries’ satellites in order to gain battlefield advantage by disrupting GPS or communications. Several satellites have also been destroyed or gone missing under mysterious circumstances lately, leading some to believe there might already be a shooting war in space. Could this “space junk laser” actually be a weapon in disguise? For that matter, what military technology isn’t a weapon in disguise?

REVEALED: Shock truth about Pentagon UFO picture which convinced world aliens may exist

EXCLUSIVE: Express.co.uk today reveals the shocking truth about a "UFO picture" that played a key role in the staggering "Pentagon UFO" story that has convinced many people "we are not alone" and intelligent aliens may be flying advanced craft on Earth.

The still image of the so-called "white tic tac UFO" was screened during a major conference when former US government and military insiders were brought to together by former Blink 182 singer Tom DeLonge for his new alien research group To The Stars Academy.

The photograph was shown during an October 2017 presentation by academy member Chris Mellon, who served for almost 20 years in the US federal government in a series of national security positions.

Its use appeared to suggest the image showed the "Nimitz UFO" encountered by a US Navy crew off the coast of San Diego in November 2004.

The UFO, which was also captured on Navy radar video camera, was said to "defy the laws of physics" in its movements.

With a large version of the still image behind him on a screen, Mr Mellon told reporters: "Clearly this is not a US experimental aircraft, but whose is it?

"How did it accomplish these feats?

Truth of the matter is... it was taken in Eccles, Manchester and I investigated the case. Likelihood... it was a novelty balloon, a number 'one'.

"This story may sound like a sci-fi movie, but it is a true story, and far from being the only one of its kind."

Details of the case went on to make international headlines with the image of the alleged UFO even being screened by US TV news station Las Vegas Now.

However, Express.co.uk can reveal the picture was not taken in San Diego in November 2004, but in Eccles, Manchester, in July 2005.

Worse still, it is not even a UFO, but believed by UFO investigators to be a helium party balloon in the shape of the number one.

The embarrassing revelation has cast doubt among some on the credibility of the To The Stars Academy, which was hailed as a turning point in the quest for the truth about UFOs by many investigators due to the backgrounds of many of its key members.

The academy has been crowdfunding to raise cash to enable its research and has so far pulled in more than $2.3 million (£1.7m) from 2,580 investors.

The picture and others of the same balloon can still be seen in a July 2005 report by Manchester UFO investigator Steve Mera on conspiracy theory website Rense.com.

Mr Mera said he investigated it at the time and later concluded it to be a floating party balloon.

He told Express.co.uk: "Truth of the matter is... it was taken in Eccles, Manchester and I investigated the case.

"Likelihood... it was a novelty balloon, a number 'one'.

"Someone manipulated the photo a little by increasing its brightness."

Debunking website Metabunk.org has picked up on the inaccurate use of the image.

BALLOON: A screen grab from the Rense.com aricle in 2005 shows the image top right.

Metabunk administrator Mick West said on the website forum: "However this 'UFO' image is in fact of a mylar party balloon.

"This object, and the described motion, is a perfect match for a mylar party balloon in the shame of a "one", a common digit in party celebrations."

Metabunk discovered the image had been used in an earlier article about the Nimitz UFOwhich was published on Fightersweep.com in March 2015.

There was, however, no caption saying what the image was in that article.

DEBUNKED? Metabunk.org wades into the debate comparing the image to a party balloon.

The same article was referenced by Mr Mellon in his presentation, and it may be that it was taken from there in good faith in the belief that it was a genuine image from the Nimitz UFO incident.

At the academy launch in October, Mr DeLonge said its members were "principle players with the highest credentials," however, the balloon revelation has led to claims casting doubt on the ability of the academy for thorough investigation.

In Mr West's view, it shows very poor research on the part of the academy.

He added: "I think the use of that image was a mistake. They are just not very good at investigating."

Tom DeLonge suggested this hoax CGI footage was leaked genuine video of a TR-3B.

It is not the first time pictures or footage used by the academy to show alleged "genuine UFOs" have been called into question.

In November we revealed how Mr DeLonge used hoax CGI footage of an alleged "TR3B triangle UFO", claiming it was a leaked genuine video.

Express.co.uk contacted Mr DeLOnge at the time about the hoax video, but received no response.

We contacted the academy again through its press agency to ask for comment on how the image of the Manchester balloon came to be used as evidence for the Nimitz UFO and we await a response after 48 hours.

UFO believers got one thing right—here's what they get wrong

     by Seth Shostak, SETI Institute
UFO believers got one thing right—here's what they get wrong.

The past few weeks have been good for UFO believers. For decades they've clamored for "disclosure"—an admission by the government that it knows of galactic gatecrashers, and that aliens are irrefutably here. This always struck me as a classic argument from ignorance: We lack good evidence to prove our case because it's been hidden.

That wouldn't work in the courts or in science, but hey, it kind of sounds good.

Well, it turns out something was hidden. In 2007 Senator Harry Reid initiated a secret Pentagon program to investigate strange aerial phenomena. It ran for five years and cost $22 million. Finally, the skeptics—those who doubt that we're hosting extraterrestrial visitors—had been shown the error of their disbelieving ways.

Except that the Pentagon study seems to have found no good evidence for visitors. Yes, there was an intriguing military video purportedly showing a cluster of alien craft. But when I watched it, I noticed that the cluster was always in the center of the field of view—which suggests that these "craft" were actually caused by the instruments aboard the plane rather than something in the airspace in front of it. Experts will undoubtedly weigh in.

What would be good evidence of alien presence? Nearly every day I receive an email or phone call from someone who claims to have seen "something very important" (which I've learned from experience is code for "UFO"). They want to chat.

So what do I do? First off, I generally dismiss witness testimony, or, put another way, stories. It's not that I think people are lying. But if someone tells you he saw a ghost at the mall, you'll have a hard time doing much with that information unless ectoplasm hangs out there on a regular basis.

Witness testimony isn't terribly reliable in criminal court cases. It's even less useful for science.

So I ask about physical or photographic evidence. There never seems to be any of the former, but often there is imagery. Some folks won't send it, apparently afraid that I'll sell their pix and deprive them of a Nobel Prize or a photo royalty. The photos I do see tend to show obvious optical effects—often bright lights caused by internal reflections in the lens or color fringes resulting from the workings of the camera's chip. Other photos show diffraction patterns caused by "hunting" of the camera's autofocus system. Many people interpret these patterns as spacecraft markings.

A lot of the images are shot at night, making them particularly hard to interpret. Perhaps daylight is too dangerous for aliens, because then it might be possible to see detail in photos taken of them. I wonder if, when the sun is shining, they hang out underground like bats.

I'm also wary of anthropomorphic touches—for example, when someone says, "They seemed friendly and just want to establish contact" or "They're buzzing our missile silos." The latter is particularly goofy. Any aliens who come from the stars are way ahead of us. If you could visit America 150 years ago, would you spend time inspecting the Union Army's cannon-making factory at Pittsburgh's Allegheny Arsenal?

Hoaxes—and of course there are some—don't seem to be common. The people who contact me all sound pretty sincere. But the one UFO claim that has zero worth for me is: "I know what I saw." After all, if that's what someone asserts, there's no room for discussion.

More than anything, I ask myself if the extraterrestrial explanation is compelling—or merely possible. Is the evidence proof-positive or only puzzling? The latter isn't good enough.

Personally, I'm mystified by the stage illusions of David Copperfield. Did he really walk through that giant fan, or is that only a possibility? Just because I don't know what really happened is hardly reason to conclude that he can saunter through whirling metal blades without chopped Copperfield flying into the audience.

The Pentagon study is certainly interesting, but not because it proves alien visitation. Of course, you can be sure that the "disclosure" folks will soon be claiming that UFO evidence is still being covered up. Conspiracy theories never end.

In the era of Google Earth, when every square yard of the continents has been photographed and put online, it's hardly surprising that we have an unsatisfied craving to explore the unknown, to do what Columbus, Magellan, Cook, and others did a half-millennium ago.

Of course, in the 21st Century, a sailing vessel may no longer satisfy that need. A sailing saucer just might.

'Surprising' UFO Sightings Are Skyrocketing in Italy—And These Government Files Back Them Up

'Surprising' UFO Sightings Are Skyrocketing in Italy—And These Government Files Back Them Up

While images of UFOs can often be forged, the Mediterranean UFO Centre (Cufom) has published a new document featuring high-quality photos and videos to back up each sighting.

Cuform President Angelo Carannante says that the images are "suprising and eloquent."

"It seems that in 2017 there has been a leap in quality in the objects sighted, given the unusual clarity of some unidentified flying objects, filmed or photographed, that had been absent for years and seem to be back," he added

Of particular interest to UFO enthusiasts are the skies of Liguria, a crescent-shaped city in the Northwestern part of the country, nestled on the Italian Riviera. Considered a land of sightings not unlike our Roswell, the city has reported sightings going back to the '40s, and has earned something of a reputation for it through films like the 2004 Italian-language B movie, InvaXon - Alieni in Liguria.

The film recounts the story of Pier Zanfretta, a local whose purported 1978 alien encounter during his time as a night watchman changed his life. Zanfretta held his account of meeting a large, terrifying green man and a triangular-shaped UFO even under hypnosis, recounting with painful attention to detail how he was abducted and subsequently contacted by the aliens on multiple occasions.

Most notable, Carannante says, is a significant rise in the reports of flying discs that, after years of absence, seem to have returned.

Citing UFO photos from Lavagna in Genoa, Arco Felice near Naples and a particularly loud one in Civitavecchia that flew 50 meters above sea level, he recalls one particular incident in the summer of 2017 when "the birds flew in a squardron, giving rise to the spectacular flotilla phenomenon during a concert by Ennio Morricone. Cufom's dossier also records sightings from towns all across the country.

Italy's first reported UFO sighting of 2017 came last January, when an unusual bright green spherical object was caught on camera in Salento, changing its shape and color multiple times over a four-year period.

All of this would be business as usual were it not for the fact that UFO sightings in America were uncharted in 2017, too. New York City had an astonishingly high number of sightings, and even professionally-trained pilots failed to identify the crafts they saw in the air. Whether or not its comforting to know, it seems that Italy felt the surge in activity, too.

Stephen Hawking says the Earth will be a fireball by 2600

    By Margi Murphy, The Sun

Mastermind Stephen Hawking has warned that the human race will perish on Earth after we turn it into a sizzling fireball in less than 600 years.

He declared that humans must “boldly go where no one has gone before” if we fancy continuing our species for another million years.

If we don’t, the world will become overcrowded and increased energy consumption will turn the planet into a ball of fire because of our soaring energy consumption as the population rises.

Making a video appearance at the Tencent WE Summit in Beijing on Sunday, Hawking appealed to investors to back his plans to travel to the closest star outside of our solar system, with the hope that a livable planet might be orbiting it.

Alpha Centauri is one of the closest star systems at 4.3 light-years away.

Scientists believe it may have exo-planets that could foster life, just like Earth.

Hawking is backing Breakthrough Starshot, a venture to reach this system within two decades using a tiny aircraft that could travel at the speed of light.

He said: “The idea behind this innovation is to have the nanocraft on the light beam.”

    Modal Trigger
    AFP/Getty Images

“Such a system could reach Mars in less than an hour, or reach Pluto in days, pass Voyager in under a week and reach Alpha Centauri in just over 20 years.”

If successful, a generation may be able to see the probe reach the star.

Starshot Breakthrough’s director, the former head at NASA’s Ames Research Center, also made an appearance in Beijing.

He said: “Maybe if all goes well, sometime a little after the middle of the century, we’ll have our first picture of another planet that may be life-bearing orbiting the nearest star.”
