WETENSCHAPEen nieuwe onderzoeksmethode heeft een gigantische Mayastad aan het licht gebracht. Eeuwenlang zaten de bouwwerken verborgen onder de Guatemalteekse jungle. “Dit is de grootste archeologische vondst in honderd jaar”, jubelen de onderzoekers. De ontdekking plaatst alles wat we al wisten over de Maya’s in een nieuw perspectief.
Het einde van de Maya-beschaving is nog steeds een mysterie. Maar deze gigantische vondst zou het raadsel mee kunnen helpen ontrafelen.
De archeologen hebben 2.000 vierkante kilometer van de jungle in Guatemala, meer bepaald in de regio Peten - vanuit de lucht gescand. Daarvoor hebben ze gebruik gemaakt van de zogenoemde LiDAR-technologie (light detection and ranging) die toelaat om door het dichte bladerdak van de weelderige jungle te kijken.
Zo is er een verborgen netwerk van huizen, piramides, wegen, irrigatiekanalen en terrassen aan het licht gekomen. In totaal zou het om meer dan 60.000 tot nog toe onbekende bouwwerken gaan.

Hieruit concluderen de onderzoekers dat het Maya-rijk uiteindelijk veel omvangrijker was dan men altijd heeft aangenomen. Het zou zich zelfs kunnen meten met het Oude Egypte en China.
Ook het bevolkingsaantal zou veel te laag zijn geschat. Men gaat nu uit van mogelijk vijftien miljoen inwoners terwijl eerdere ramingen het hielden op een bevolking van maximaal vijf miljoen. Een wereld van verschil.
Bovendien blijkt nu dat veel mensen woonden in laaggelegen moerasachtige gebieden die als onbewoonbaar werden geacht. “De Maya-beschaving heeft letterlijk bergen verzet”, concludeert archeoloog Marcello Canuto.

Volgens wetenschapper Tom Garrison is deze vondst de belangrijkste in ruim honderd jaar, alleszins wat betreft de Maya’s. Bovendien moeten de archeologen nog een gebied van 20.000 vierkante kilometer doorzoeken. Francisco Estrada-Belli van het National Geographic Explorer-programma vermoedt dat er “nog honderden verborgen steden zullen gevonden worden”.
“Het is een revolutie”, besluit Estrada-Belli. “We zullen nog honderd jaar nodig hebben om te begrijpen wat we hier allemaal zien.”

I shot this video from my backyard in the Summerlin area of Las Vegas, Nevada on the night of February 19, 2016. Everyone has their favorites and this is one of mine. It was an extremely lucky guess to set my night vision camera on the entrance to Red Rock Canyon and let it film for thirty minutes in the hopes something would show up. I have done it before but I never caught anything as incredible as this. These two triangles appear to have half domes on top and the crafts themselves seem to be triangles. I think this may be the only video I have filmed where I am pretty sure I caught triangular objects. There may be more in my collection but the objects I filmed in those videos were too far away to make out what the actual shapes were. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video.

Laser scans reveal Maya "Megalopolis" below Guatemalan Jungle. Laser technology known as LiDAR digitally removes the forest canopy to reveal ancient ruins below, showing that Maya cities such as Tikal were much larger than ground-based research had suggested.
In what’s being hailed as a “major breakthrough” in Maya archaeology, researchers have identified the ruins of more than 60,000 houses, palaces, elevated highways, defensive walls, ramparts, terraces, fortresses and other human-made features that have been hidden for centuries under the jungles of northern Guatemala.
Complex irrigation and terracing systems supported intensive agriculture capable of feeding masses of workers who dramatically reshaped the landscape.
At its peak in the Maya classic period (approximately A.D. 250–900), the civilization covered an area about twice the size of medieval England, but it was far more densely populated.

Verschillende geologische processen kwamen compleet stil te liggen.
Dat stellen onderzoekers van Curtin University. In het blad Nature Geoscience komen ze met nieuw bewijs op de proppen dat getuigt van een uitzonderlijk rustige periode in de geologische geschiedenis van onze planeet. De periode zou zo’n 2,3 miljard jaar geleden zijn ingezet, tijdens het Paleoproterozoïcum en wordt gekenmerkt door een enorme afname in vulkaanuitbarstingen. “Maar ook een afname in sedimentatie en een opvallend gebrek aan beweging van tektonische platen,” aldus onderzoeker Christopher Spencer.
“HET WAS BIJNA ALSOF DE AARDE EEN MIDLIFE-CRISIS DOORMAAKTE”
“Het vroege Paleoproterozoïcum was een significante periode in de geschiedenis van de aarde. Het was de tijd waarin de atmosfeer voor het eerst grote hoeveelheden zuurstof opnam en ook de periode waarin de eerste wereldwijde ijstijd zich aandiende. En het was de periode waarin andere geologische processen in feite stil kwamen te liggen. Het was bijna alsof de aarde een midlife-crisis doormaakte.”
Afremmen De onderzoekers trekken die conclusie op basis van ontzettend veel geologische informatie en een onderzoek naar gesteenten, verzameld in Australië, China, Canada en Afrika. “Hoe meer gesteenten en data we verzamelden, hoe duidelijker het werd dat er heel weinig over deze periode is ‘opgeslagen’ in het geologisch archief. De aardmantel was veel warmer dan vandaag de dag en vulkanen stelden de mantel door de tijd heen in staat om af te koelen en aangenomen wordt dat geologische processen daardoor af werden geremd. We geloven dat die continue afremming leidde tot de dramatische geologische veranderingen zoals we die zien aan het begin van het Paleoproterozoïcum.”
Verandering De ‘midlife-crisis’ van de aarde zou ongeveer 100 miljoen jaar hebben geduurd. De onderzoekers vermoeden dat de periode een grote verandering in platentektoniek markeert: vóór de ‘midlife-crisis’ zou er sprake zijn geweest van een ouderwetse platentektoniek en daarna een meer moderne platentektoniek die sterk lijkt op de platentektoniek zoals we die vandaag de dag kennen. “Na deze periode begonnen de aardse geologische processen rond 2,2 tot 2 miljard jaar geleden weer ‘wakker te worden’, met het ‘opvlammen’ van de vulkanische activiteit en een verandering in de samenstelling van de continentale korst,” legt Spencer uit.
Het onderzoek is belangrijk, omdat het mogelijk meer inzicht kan geven in de natuurlijke grondstoffen op aarde en hun precieze locatie.

Er gaan geruchten dat de Trump-regering de geldkraan in 2025 gaat dichtdraaien.
Dat meldt The Verge. De site baseert zich op een voorlopig budgetvoorstel en twee anonieme bronnen die beweren dat het dichtdraaien van de geldkraan ook in het definitieve voorstel is opgenomen. The Verge heeft ook NASA om een reactie gevraagd, maar deze niet ontvangen.
Als de Amerikanen toch besluiten om het ISS ook na 2024 nog financieel te ondersteunen, is dat zeer waarschijnlijk slechts voor enkele jaren. Het ruimtestation zal nog voor het eind van het tweede decennium van deze eeuw uit zijn baan worden gehaald, omdat het dan echt begint af te takelen. Gehoopt werd dat het ISS dan een commerciële opvolger zou krijgen. Volgens The Verge is dat laatste tegen 2024 nog niet haalbaar.
Andere aandeelhouders Mocht de Amerikaanse overheid daadwerkelijk de geldkraan dichtdraaien, dan is het nog maar de vraag of de andere aandeelhouders – Rusland, Canada, Japan en de Europese ruimtevaartorganisatie – er nog heil inzien om het ISS draaiende te houden. Zeker omdat de Amerikanen op dit moment het leeuwendeel van de kosten voor hun rekening nemen. Het lijkt nog niet zo aannemelijk dat de andere aandeelhouders zo’n gat in de begroting moeiteloos kunnen en willen opvangen.
Naar de maan De Amerikanen daarentegen, zouden met deze zet een hoop geld besparen. En dat geld kunnen ze dan weer voor andere dingen gebruiken. Trump maakte recent bekend een bemande maanmissie te ambiëren en dat kost vanzelfsprekend ook een hoop geld. En ook voor de president van de VS geldt: je kunt een dollar maar één keer uitgeven.
NASA moet met een beperkt budget (zo’n 19 miljard dollar per jaar) zoveel mogelijk zien te bewerkstelligen. Geen wonder dat er zo af en toe missies geschrapt worden. Zo sneuvelde vorig jaar nog de Asteroid Redirect Mission. Tijdens deze missie zou een deel van een planetoïde gepakt worden en in een baan rond de maan worden geplaatst, zodat astronauten deze gemakkelijk konden bezoeken. Hoewel er al aardig wat in de missie geïnvesteerd was, zette de overheid er toch een streep door, omdat deze relatief duur was.
Het belang van het ISS Dat het ISS mogelijk omwille van die maanmissie – die gezien wordt als een opmaat naar een Marsmissie – wordt opgeofferd, is ironisch. Juist in het ISS worden namelijk experimenten uitgevoerd en technologieën ontwikkeld die we tijdens missies naar de maan en Mars hard nodig zullen hebben. Ook wordt er al bijna twee decennia intensief onderzoek gedaan naar het effect dat een langdurig verblijf in de ruimte op het menselijk lichaam heeft. En hoewel dat reeds tot belangrijke inzichten heeft geleid, valt er nog genoeg te ontdekken. Met het wegvallen van deze ruimtemissie zouden de Amerikanen zichzelf dan ook wel eens in de vingers kunnen snijden.
Zover is het echter nog niet. Tot op heden zijn het immers niet meer dan geruchten. En zelfs als we de plannen straks in het budgetvoorstel tegenkomen, moet nog blijken of ook het Amerikaanse Congres daar enthousiast over is, zo benadrukt The Verge.

One internet user from the US revealed their interesting interpretation of what the shape is. In their post “Something Scary and Real on Google Maps”, which brought the image to light, said: “Go to Google Maps, search’47.110579,9.227568’, click the green arrow, and click ‘Street view’.
“Look up two times and go left two times and spot something in the sky...You will see an angel in the process of stepping back into a portal.”

New Technology Helps Find Thousands Of Mysterious Maya Structures Below Guatemalan Jungle
An immense, interconnected network of ancient cities was home to millions more people than researchers previously thought.
A group of researchers has identified the ruins of more than 60,000 houses, palaces, superhighways and other human settlements belonging to the ancient Maya that have been hidden for centuries under the jungles of northern Guatemala.
This finding is a great advance in the archaeological investigation of the Mayan civilization.
The discovery was made possible thanks to the use of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), a device that allowed archaeologists to digitally remove trees from aerial images of Mayan cities, revealing the ruins of a pre-Columbian civilization that was much more complex and it was more interconnected than most experts believed.
More than 60,000 houses, palaces, superhighways and other human settlements were revealed with the help of LiDAR.

“The LiDAR images make it clear that this entire region was a settlement system whose scale and population density had been grossly underestimated,” said Thomas Garrison, an Ithaca College archaeologist and National Geographic Explorer who specializes in using digital technology for archaeological research.
The researchers scanned more than 2,100 km² of the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala, in the Petén department, resulting in the largest data set ever obtained with LiDAR for archaeological research.
In addition to hundreds of previously unknown structures, the images provided by the LiDAR scan show networks of superhighways connecting urban centers, quarries and complex irrigation systems and agricultural terraces, which allowed the ancient Maya to feed hundreds of workers in charge of building the great cities that have now been discovered.
At first glance, all you can see is the thick jungle and a mound (above), but thanks to LiDAR technology in combination with augmented reality software we are able to reveal an ancient Mayan pyramid (below).
Curiously, the ancient Maya never used the wheel or pack animals, however, “this was a civilization that literally moved mountains,” said Marcello Canuto, an archaeologist at Tulane University and a National Geographic explorer who participated in this research.
All these results suggest that Central America housed an advanced and complex civilization comparable to ancient Greece.
At its height in the Classic Maya period (250-900 AD), this ancient civilization occupied an area roughly twice the size of medieval England, but it was much more densely populated.
“Most people had been comfortable with population estimates of around 5 million,” said Estrada-Belli, who directs a multi-disciplinary archaeological project at Holmul, Guatemala. “With this new data, it’s no longer unreasonable to think that there were 10 to 15 million people there—including many living in low-lying, swampy areas that many of us had thought uninhabitable.”
Among the most surprising discoveries was the ubiquity of defensive walls, ramparts, terraces, and a number of fortresses.
“Warfare wasn’t only happening toward the end of the civilization,” said Garrison. “It was large-scale and systematic, and it endured for many years.”
The new investigation also revealed thousands of pits dug by looters.
“Many of these new sites are new to us, but they are not new to looters,” said Marianne Hernández, president of the PACUNAM Foundation, a Guatemalan nonprofit organization that promotes scientific research, sustainable development and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Environmental degradation is another concern. Guatemala is losing more than 10 percent of its forests annually, and habitat loss has accelerated along its border with Mexico to the illegal burning and deforestation of land for agriculture and human settlements.

Officials have attempted to quash alien talk, claiming it’s space debris instead.
“According to the first analysis, it would be a fuel tank of a disused satellite,” Commander Pedro Palza of the Peruvian Air Force said in a statement.
“We are talking about the part of a satellite that stopped operating. Commonly it is known as space junk.”

An aircraft that represents a missing technological link between Lockheed's abortive "Tier III-" RQ-3 Darkstar unmanned penetrating and long-loitering spy aircraft and the company's history making RQ-170 Sentinel is now coming to light. This previously unknown (to the public) flying-wing drone was built by Lockheed Skunk Works in 1999, shortly after the RQ-3 program vanished.
This new program, which aimed to prove rapid manufacturing technologies and penetrating aerial reconnaissance capabilities, as well as the aerodynamic validity of a relatively small, tailless, swept-wing drone, was dubbed the X-44A and first took to the skies in 2001.
The shadowy aircraft's designation is outright confusing as the X-44 "Manta" is largely known as a program that aimed to test a tailless manned aircraft design that emanated from the same period of time. This notional aircraft would use thrust vectoring for primary flight control, with the objective being to realize new speed, fuel efficiency, and maneuverability capabilities with such a design, as well as to demonstrate simpler and cheaper forms of aircraft structures production.

This USAF and NASA led program was supposedly cancelled around the turn of the millennium with some conceptual art being all that is left to show for it, which mainly includes drawings of
what appears to be a tailless F-22 with an expanded trapezoidal wing.

This is the official entry for the X-44A as it appears in 2004 edition of the Department of Defense Directive 4120.15-L, Model Designation of Military Aerospace Vehicles, the Pentagon's official public master list of aircraft and missile nomenclature. The "none" portion of the entry indicates that it has no official popular nickname. Clearly, this does not properly correspond with Lockheed's X-44A drone. How or why this is the case remains unknown.
It is unclear at this time how Lockheed's fat little flying-wing drone also ended up with the same X-44 designation, but there doesn't seem to be any direct relation between the two programs.
A patent dated 1996 and belonging to Lockheed has been identified as the real X-44A's design, or at least very close to it. The X-44's skin is supposedly made out of nano-carbon fiber and it's powered by a Williams F112 turbojet engine. The F112 powerplant is used in cruise missiles, such as the stealthy AGM-129,but it has also been used in other unmanned technology demonstrators, like the McDonnell Douglas's X-36 and Boeing's X-50.

Size wise, the X-44 has a wingspan of approximately 30 feet, making it roughly half the size of its RQ-170 successor. The airframe is modular in nature with a potato-like fuselage that could carry various sensors. It is also likely that the aircraft could have its wings detached for transport, similar to the RQ-170. The aircraft is guided by traditional control surfaces along its trailing edge and it features rakes, squared-off wingtips.
Aside from doing independent research for Lockheed Martin, the X-44 was apparently also part of some sort of competition between Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed, the outcome of which remains unknown but it seems as if Lockheed lost. The goal of that competition is unknown, but it could have been an early semi-disposable stealthy drone program very similar to the Air Force Research Lab's current Low-Cost Attritable Strike Demonstration (LCASD) initiative.
The aircraft wears the insignia below, a mysterious crest that has become popular in aerospace-defense crowds after being presented initially in Trevor Peglen's book I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me: Emblems from the Pentagon's Black World.
The crest features a black manta ray, which is interesting because "Black Manta" was the nickname for the aforementioned canceled X-44 program. It reads pottus est melius quam satis bene: "Making something better than just good enough"—this could be in reference to the manufacturing techniques used in the X-44's creation. Indigo, Delta, Kilo seems to be a reference to "I Don't Know," underlining the deep classification of the program. The number one and constellation of stars remain a mystery. Usually six stars signify Area 51 as a primary test location, but in this case there are 11.
In recent years, the Skunk Works X-44 was refitted and used to evaluate visual cueing systems for the Navy's upcoming Carrier Based Aerial Refueling System(CBARS) tanker drone program. Lockheed, which hasn't yet shown off its entrant into the CBARS tender, faces stiff competition from General Atomicsand Boeing.

What the X-44 provides us with is a new evolutionary stepping stone in a lineage of aircraft that collectively represent the Skunk Works' quiet dive into the high-end unmanned space—a space that became increasingly promising in the early 2000s.
The type likely served as one of the cruder forerunners to a family of stealth unmanned aircraft systems, some of which are undoubtedly still cloaked in secrecy. But one can clearly see how it helped spawn the P175 Polecatdemonstrator, which had similar program goals and overall similar design, but on a much larger and more advanced scale.
Other aircraft also likely existed during the early and mid 2000 that are part of this family of clandestine flying-wings courtesy of the Skunk Works. Following the attacks on 9/11, a penetrating and persistent reconnaissance capability would have been a top priority, and it is widely understood that a similar clandestine aircraft system belonging to Lockheed participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This was likely a semi-operational forerunner to the RQ-170 Sentinel, which first appeared publicly at Kandahar airfield in Afghanistan in 2007.

The RQ-170 Sentinel in particular, which helped in finding and finishing-off Osama Bin Laden, kept tabs on the Iran's nuclear program, and famously fell into the hands of Iran in 2011, not to mention also likely flying missions over other hostile territories such as North Korea, is a known operational benefactor of the X-44A's existence, and there surely are others. You can learn all about the intriguing and mysterious saga of America's stealthy unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) programs and why they disappeared in this past TWZ super feature.
Hopefully the Skunk Works will post photos of this intriguing aircraft and more information on its backstory in the near future. That being said, the logic behind keeping it classified for so long is quite puzzling considering its simplicity and diminutive size compared to high-end unmanned systems we know of today.
Above all else, the nearly two decade old X-44A serves a reminder that there is so much technology and history buried in the deeply classified "black" world that we have yet to learn about.
We have reached out to Lockheed about the X-44 but have not heard back. We will keep you updated if we receive more information on this historic aircraft.

13 Billion Years Of Evolution: This Is The Most Detailed Model Of The Universe Ever Created
Named “Illustris: The Next Generation” or Illustris TNG for short, it is the most detailed model of our universe ever created.
This impressive simulation shows 13 billion years of evolution, and scientists say it could help unlock the secrets of the cosmos.
Mapping out the ways galaxies evolve in the simulation offers a glimpse of what our own Milky Way galaxy might have been like when the Earth formed and how our galaxy could change in the future, say, scientists.

Based on the basic laws of physics, the stunning simulation shows how our cosmos evolved from the Big Bang and includes some of the physical processes that played a crucial role in the evolution.
The first results of the IllustrisTNG project have been published in three different papers published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The findings, say, experts, should help answer fundamental questions in cosmology.
IllustrisTNG is not the first simulation created by experts. In fact, it is a successor model to the original Illustris simulation developed by the same research team. However, IllustrisTNG has been updated to include many of the physical processes that play crucial roles in the formation and evolution of galaxies.
To create the simulation, experts used evidence of the earliest days of our universe, gather from the Cosmic Microwave Background, leftover from he Big Bang. With this data, scientists managed to model the conditions o the time when our uiverse was a mere few hundred years old.
Researchers then added baryonic matter, which forms stars and planets; they included dark matter, which is believed to enable galactic structures to grow; and finally dark energy, the mysterious force behind all cosmic acceleration.
All of these elements are then coded into the simulation together with equations that describe supernova explosions and black holes.
Dr. Shy Genel, of the Flatiron Institute’s Centre for Computational Astrophysics, said: “When we observe galaxies using a telescope, we can only measure certain quantities.”
“With the simulation, we can track all the properties for all these galaxies. And not just how the galaxy looks now, but its entire formation history,” Dr. Genel added.
At their points of intersection, the cosmic network of gas and dark matter predicted by IllustrisTNG harbor galaxies quite similar to the shape and size of real galaxies.
For the first time, the simulations allow us to directly calculate the detailed pattern of galaxy clusters in space.
The new simulation predicts how our cosmic web is altered over time, especially in relation to the dark matter that underlies the cosmos.
Volker Springel, of the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, and one of the experts that developed and programmed the simulation said:
“It is particularly fascinating that we can accurately predict the influence of supermassive black holeson the distribution of matter out to large scales,” says Springel.
“This is crucial for reliably interpreting forthcoming cosmological measurements.”
Asteroid 2002 AJ129 is relatively massive, and it moves fast. It’ll be closest to Earth on February 4, 2018 at about 10 times the moon’s distance. This post tells you how to watch online.
Asteroids are chunks of rock or metal – most likely debris left over from the formation of our solar system – and they sweep past Earth all the time. Little ones enter our atmosphere fairly frequently. But fast-moving asteroid 2002 AJ129 – which will pass close to Earth this Super Bowl Sunday, February 4, 2018 – is making a bigger stir than some because it’s a relatively big one, somewhere between 0.3 miles (0.5 km) and 0.75 miles (1.2 km) across. Its closest approach to Earth will be at 21:30 UTC (4:30 p.m. EST) on February 4; translate to your time zone. For sure, the Super Bowl will make a bigger splash than asteroid 2002 AJ129, however. At its closest, the asteroid will be no closer than 10 times the moon’s distance (about 2.6 million miles, or 4.2 million km).
This asteroid is a particularly fast-moving one. Its velocity at the time of closest approach will be 76,000 mph (34 km per second), higher than the majority of near-Earth objects during an Earth flyby. NASA said the high flyby velocity is a result of the asteroid’s orbit, which approaches very close to the sun – 11 million miles (18 million km).
Astronomers will be following on this object, which is categorized as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA). They’ve been following it for 14 years. Paul Chodas is manager of NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. He said in a statement from NASA:
We … know its orbit very accurately. Our calculations indicate that asteroid 2002 AJ129 has no chance — zero — of colliding with Earth on February 4 or any time over the next 100 years.

Astronomers discovered 2002 AJ129 on January 15, 2002. It was picked up by the former NASA-sponsored Near Earth Asteroid Tracking project at the Maui Space Surveillance Site on Haleakala, Hawaii.
Bottom line: Fast-moving, relatively weighty asteroid 2002 AJ129 will make a close approach to Earth on February 4, 2018. It’ll pass no closer than 10 times the moon’s distance.

NASA released this self-portrait of its Curiosity rover on January 31, 2018. This selfie of the rover is actually assembled from dozens of images taken by Curiosity’s Mars Hands Lens Imager (MAHLI). The imager acquired all of these shots on January 23, 2018, during Sol 1943.
NASA said it:
… shows the vehicle on Vera Rubin Ridge, which it’s been investigating for the past several months. Directly behind the rover is the start of a clay-rich slope scientists are eager to begin exploring. In the coming week, Curiosity will begin to climb this slope. North is on the left and west is on the right, with Gale Crater’s rim on the horizon of both edges.
Poking up just behind Curiosity’s mast is Mount Sharp, photobombing the robot’s selfie. Curiosity landed on Mars five years ago with the intention of studying lower Mount Sharp, where it will remain for all of its time on Mars. The mountain’s base provides access to layers formed over millions of years. These layers formed in the presence of water — likely due to a lake or lakes that sat at the bottom of the mountain, which sits inside Gale Crater.

Although we have been calling Earth our home for many generations, there are many theories that claim humans evolved elsewhere in the galaxy and moved here sometime in the distant past.
Could this controversial and intriguing claim be true? If so, where do we come from and why did our traveling ancestors choose Earth?
Researcher and author Dr. Ellis Silver were best known for proposing a scientific evaluation of evidence suggesting man evolved elsewhere in the universe. In his book, Humans are not from Earth, he lists many reasons for why he believes there is evidence for mankind’s ancestry outside of the blue planet. He also evaluates possible points of origin and a timeline for our appearance on Earth.
Dr. Silver compared our human physiology to that of other animals and he believes there are many crucial differences between us. As a species, humans are particularly sensitive to sunlight. The sun has a dazzling effect on humans whilst most animals seem immune to this effect. While reptiles use heat from the sun to regulate their own internal temperature, humans experience serious troubles if exposed for more than two weeks. According to Silver, this behavior constitutes evidence that humans might have evolved on a planet with considerably less sunlight. Our genetic makeup was able to adapt to this increased radiation, but not without cost.
Humans also suffer from chronic illnesses at a much higher rate than other animals. This could be the result of a struggle to cope with damaging factors that weren’t present at the time of our evolution. “We are all chronically ill,” says Silver. “Indeed, if you can find a single person who is 100% fit and healthy and not suffering from some (perhaps hidden or unstated) condition or disorder I would be extremely surprised – I have not been able to find anyone.
People suffer from bad backs and have done so throughout our history. Dr. Silver believes this problem can be traced back to humans evolving on a planet with a much lower level of gravity. Despite being the most advanced species on Earth, we are surprisingly ill-equipped for life here: sunlight harms us, we are plagued with illness and we have a strong dislike for raw or naturally occurring foods. And then there’s the overwhelming feeling of not belonging here that so many people experience. Dr. Silver claims this is not a passing thing but rather some kind of genetic longing for home.
“The Earth approximately meets our needs as a species, but perhaps not as strongly as whoever brought us here initially thought,” said Silver in an interview with Yahoo news.
Our internal body clocks evolved to work in conjunction with a 25-hour day. Silver believes this missing hour accounts for many of our biological problems and his claims are backed up by sleep researchers all over the world. This complication is not something recent and can be traced back through mankind’s history.
Dr. Silver explores the possibility that early pre-humans like Homoerectus were crossbred with another species. Other life on Earth could have arrived on comets or meteorites as primitive life-forms and evolved for billions of years into the species we see today, but we did not.
Humans evolved from a different strain of life somewhere else in the universe and were brought here as fully evolved Homo sapiens. This happened somewhere between 60,000 and 200,000 years ago. Silver speculates this could have happened for many reasons, the most interesting of them being that Earth might be a prison planet. He believes this could account for our violent nature and behavior. If this is the case, how long are we in for?
The book has been met with a healthy dose of criticism but as Dr. Silver points out, it is just intelligent speculative writing aimed at sparking debate. In any case, it makes for an interesting read.

Quand vous croyez aux OVNIs et que vous voyez quelque chose que vous n'avez jamais vu, vous allez dire que c'est un OVNI.
Dans mon dernier billet, je cachais mal mon scepticisme face aux affirmations de trois articles du New York Times en décembre à propos d'un programme du Pentagone pour enquêter sur les OVNIS et un incident en 2004 sur une rencontre avec un OVNI au large de San Diego. Ces articles, sous un couvert neutre, ont fait sensation la semaine de leur parution, une des auteurs Leslie Kean donnant une entrevue à CNN en soulignant à gros trait que l'explication extraterrestre était très valide dans ce cas.
Comme j'indiquais dans mon récent article, cette campagne médiatique suit une campagne de financement du site pro-OVNI To The Stars dont certains des membres sont ceux qui participaient au programme du Pentagone comme mentionné dans les articles du NYT. Autrement dit, il y a comme une orchestration logique de toutes ces récentes déclarations publiques.
Les preuves d'OVNIS
Les affirmations des ufologues sur le cas mentionné par le New York Times et leur preuve "irréfutable" d'engins extraterrestres dans notre ciel reposent sur trois éléments:
-la déclaration de l'ex-pilote David Fravor sur l'évènement de 2004 du USS Nimitz
-une vidéo montrant un objet en forme de pilule accélérant soudainement très rapidement
-une vidéo montrant un objet de forme étrange effectuant une rotation hors du commun
Les ufologues prétendent que si un pilote dit qu'il a vu un OVNI, alors cela veut dire qu'il y avait bien un OVNI: un argument d'autorité. Que si une vidéo montre un objet accélérant à une vitesse incroyable, ce ne peut être qu'un OVNI d'une autre planète. Que si une vidéo montre un objet tournant comme aucun avion ne pourrait tourner, alors c'est un OVNI d'une autre planète.
J'ai attendu quelques semaines avant d'écrire la suite de mon premier article, car les experts continuaient à analyser les vidéos afin de rétablir les faits. Nous pouvons maintenant dévoiler le détail de ces analyses.
David Fravor
David Fravor était pilote de F/A-18 Super Hornet à bord du USS Nimitz lors de l'incident du 14 novembre 2004. Juste avant sa retraite, il a participé à la série Carrier de 10 épisodes diffusés à PBS, un documentaire sur la vie à bord du porte-avions USS Nimitz. Il n'est donc pas étranger à se présenter dans les médias.
Fravor est celui qui a descendu son avion le plus proche de l'OVNI Tic-Tac qu'il a décrit comme ayant la taille d'un chasseur, blanc, solide avec des contours définis, sans fenêtre ni moteur apparent, se déplaçant rapidement et pouvant freiner et s'orienter à volonté, capable de tourner plus vite que son avion pour finalement disparaître au loin. Son témoignage est corroboré par son WSO (Weapon System Officer) ainsi que par le 2e pilote qui était plus haut et a assisté à l'engagement.
Quand vous croyez aux OVNIs et que vous voyez quelque chose que vous n'avez jamais vu, vous allez dire que c'est un OVNI.
Mais, alors que David voit un OVNI, le 2e pilote voit plutôt un essai d'une nouvelle arme prototype. Pourtant c'est David qu'on voit dans les médias et qui prétend que c'est un OVNI d'origine extra-terrestre. Quand vous croyez aux OVNIs et que vous voyez quelque chose que vous n'avez jamais vu, vous allez dire que c'est un OVNI. Mais si vous ne croyez pas vraiment aux OVNIs et vous voyez un objet que vous n'avez jamais vu, vous direz peut-être qu'il s'agit d'un nouvel équipement en test comme le 2e pilote le prétend.
La vidéo de l'évènement du USS Nimitz
David Fravor, ébranlé par ce qu'il a vécu, en parle à la 2e équipe de pilotes prêts à décoller pour un exercice régulier. Ceux-ci possèdent un ATFLIR dans leur avion, une caméra infrarouge capable de suivre une cible aérienne.
Après avoir participé à leur exercice d'entraînement, un des avions se rend au point où le Tic-Tac avait été aperçu par Fravor et essaie de trouver l'objet sur leur caméra. Ils détectent un objet en forme de pilule à une distance inconnue (puisque le ATFLIR ne donne pas la distance comme l'énonce RAYTHEON le fabricant) et copie le vidéo, une fois retourné au porte-avions. C'est le vidéo qui se promène partout sur le web depuis 2007 et dont Fravor affirme qu'il est SIMILAIRE à ce qu'il a rencontré. Ce n'est pas nécessairement le même objet.
Ce qu'on voit sur le vidéo, même noir, peut être de couleur blanche sur un fond plus clair encore, mais n'importe quel avion très loin peut apparaître comme une pilule surtout si le vidéo est de piètre qualité et flou. Le mouvement très rapide à la fin n'est qu'un mouvement normal d'un avion très loin qui tourne, de la caméra qui change son zoom et qui perd le contact sur l'objet comme l'analyse ici le démontre.
Le vidéo GIMBAL
Ce vidéo absolument pas relié à l'évènement de 2004 (il proviendrait d'un exercice sur la côte est en 2015) montre un étrange objet noir qui semble faire une rotation tout à fait extraordinaire hors de cet univers.
En fait, une caméra infrarouge dans ce mode, montre la chaleur provenant d'un réacteur en noir, l'aura autour plus clair n'est qu'un problème de la caméra et de la compression digitale et la rotation vient d'un réajustement des lentilles à l'intérieur des caméras, un problème relié au gimbal, le nom du vidéo comme par hasard. Gimbal est un système d'axes qui permet d'orienter une caméra dans n'importe quelle direction.
Pour un oeil non averti, cela apparaît comme un OVNI alors que pour un pilote, il ne s'agit que d'un objet aérien bien commun (probablement un drone) en poursuite.
Il ne faut pas toujours croire ce qu'on lit
Le New York Times et CNN ont manqué une belle occasion de faire preuve de plus de circonspections. Avant d'ameuter la population que l'existence des extraterrestres était maintenant prouvée selon toute probabilité, ils auraient pu demander l'avis de plusieurs experts et même amateurs sur leurs faibles preuves facilement démenties par de simples explications rationnelles.
Donc, il n'y a toujours pas de preuves de l'existence d'extraterrestres sur Terre et c'est aussi bien ainsi.

In those seven decades the 36 percent of American taxpayers who felt that there was an extraterrestrial presence of some sort were summarily ridiculed, laughed at, and referred to as the Tin Foil hat crowd. Interestingly enough, based on polling data, 80 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. government isn’t being truthful about what it knows.
On Jan. 18, 2017, more than 13 million pages of declassified documents from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) were released online via the National Archives. Among all that declassified material released were 70-year-old CIA documents that clearly indicated they were investigating the phenomena actively within the Office of Scientific Intelligence (OSI) in the late 1940s and early 1950s. At last, a little bit a truth!
On Dec. 16, 2017, The New York Times published a groundbreaking story about the Pentagon’s five-year, $22 million Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP). The mainstream media jumped on it and it was the focus of the news cycle for a short time. Now we have another big splash of truth.
Did the news incite public panic on the scale of Orson Welles’ famed 1938 radio production of War of the Worlds? No!
Lots of people who were on the fence about the subject did say “Wow!” Of course, the serious skeptics just sniffed at the news, or they roared for weeks afterward, slamming Harry Reid and the Pentagon for spending a measly $22 million over five years on researching those silly UFOs!
Let’s look at it in a different way: It’s time to bring out the truth!
If the defense department is concerned that there is a “clear and present concern related to the potential advanced aerospace threat,” how about being square with the American people and humanity as a whole? Tell us the truth with real evidence and ask us to get behind the effort to further investigate and understand this phenomenon.
President Trump’s proposal for a $30 billion wall would equal about 5 percent of the total Pentagon budget. That’s an awful lot of money to spend on a politically and emotionally perceived threat.
$22 million seems like pittance in the scheme of things when you consider the awesome importance of the truth about the extraterrestrial presence in the world.
We don’t need the wall: We need the truth about whether we are alone in the universe. And don’t give us some bull that it will mess up people’s religions. Most people of faith believe that the Great Maker’s universe is full of wonders and great mystery.
We need the mainstream media to stand up and do their journalistic duty and put serious pressure on every member of Congress to demand the truth from the CIA, the Pentagon and any other agency that’s been sitting on this truth all these years.
The National Academy of Sciences needs to get off their laureled academic butts and put some real science behind the study of this entire area of study, not a whitewash like they did in 1968 with the Condon Report fiasco.
We need the president to stop tweeting and order his secretary of defense to demand a full and open briefing from all the unacknowledged special access groups in the Pentagon, and let the chips of the truth fall where they may. The people demand nothing less!

"There wasn't any rhyme or reason for it happening. They just appeared."
Two witnesses, a man and a woman, were driving near Harmony Way and Cave Avenue on Evansville’s west side Saturday. They’ve chosen to remain anonymous.
“I just saw them in the sky, go what is that? And he looked up and he goes, oh,” the woman said.
"I stopped the van, got my phone out, and put it on the video,” said the man.
They say eight orbs of light making no noise were flying over the Evansville sky.
"And they were moving pretty fast, yeah."
Neither person knew what they were seeing, but tried to describe the phenomenon.
“They were dropping out of the clouds and going across the sky, and it was quite a spectacular site,” the man said. “It's really hard to explain your emotion. I didn't have any negative feelings at all. I didn't have any feelings of like being in danger, or that they were here to harm us in any way.”
They pair contacted the Mutual UFO Network, an organization that claims to be one of the largest UFO groups in the world.
"They’re unidentified flying objects,” the man said. “I think it validates the situation here, so keep your eyes to the sky."
They also claim a military aircraft followed the orbs before they shot back up into the sky. Unfortunately, that part wasn't captured on camera.
"People are gonna believe what they want to believe,” the woman said. "Something's out there. We can't be the only ones on this universe, you know."
UPDATE:
A representative of MUFON says the case is still under investigation and cannot confirm if the objects seen in the footage are UFOs, and that the group is based out of Irvine, California, and not Cincinnati as previously reported.

Nick Pope, a former investigator of the UFO phenomenon for the British MoD, was reacting to claims made by experts that recent "UFO" footage released by the US Government was probably just a plane.
Yesterday, Express.co.uk revealed that in a radio podcast of the Big Picture Science Skeptic Check, produced at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, a panel of experts looked at the shocking radar video footage and the consensus was the object shown was just infrared heat from plane engines misidentified by US Navy pilots.
The US-based SETI Institute is a collective of scientists looking for evidence of alien life in the cosmos.
However, Mr Pope argued the footage should not be dismissed by SETI so readily.
He said: "I saw the SETI Institute's sceptical comments about the Pentagon UFO videos and thought I'd chip in, as I think they've misunderstood or failed to take account of something fairly important about this.
"While I agree that the videos themselves don't prove anything, I think the criticism of them is based on a misunderstanding. What many people don't seem to appreciate is that these videos haven't been illegally leaked - they've been declassified and legitimately placed into the public domain.
"Self-evidently, therefore, there's nothing in them that the US government, military or intelligence community regards as particularly sensitive.

"Yes, it's a big deal that military jets were chasing these objects, but while they weren't able to catch or identify them, the videos in and of themselves don't prove the pilots encountered extraterrestrial spacecraft.
"The real issue relates not to the grainy imagery that's been released to the world, but to the classified analyses that will have been undertaken by intelligence staff.
"When I worked on the MoD's UFO project we received a steady stream of photographs and films from the public, and from time to time, over the years, RAF pilots encountered UFOs and sometimes managed to get some gun camera footage.
"We'd send this material to the Defence Intelligence Staff and to a unit called the Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre (now subsumed within the Defence Geospatial Intelligence Fusion Centre at RAF Wyton).
"These imagery analysts are very bright people and have tremendously sophisticated tools at their disposal to enhance and analyse photos and videos.
"This is exactly what AATIP and other US intelligence community personnel will have done with these UFO videos, using their own IMINT (imagery intelligence) specialists.
"The detailed results of these analyses, perhaps including enhanced, crystal clear images of what the pilots encountered, haven't yet been made public, and may never see the light of day.
"In summary, sceptics may not be impressed by the blurry videos that have been made public - and I take their point - but somewhere in the US intelligence community there will be considerably more impressive material.
"However, whether any of this can be declassified and made public remains to be seen."
The video made global headlines in December, when a New York Times article revealed the existence of a top-secret US Department of Defense department which investigated the UFO phenomenon for five years from 2007 to 2012.
The Advanced Aerial Threat Identification program (AATIP) had a £16million budget to investigate any threat posed by unidentified objects observed by the military.
It was headed by Luis Elizondo, who resigned from the DoD last October to help set up the To The Stars Academy with former Blink 182 singer Tom DeLonge to further UFO research privately.
The article also revealed the radar camera footage from a US Navy aircraft flying off the coast of San Diego in November 2004, which was said to show a UFO that "defied physics."
This footage was part of the so-called Nimitz UFO incident, in which several US Navy personnel reported seeing several tic-tac shaped UFOs over the sea, a case that was investigated by the AATIP.
Mr Elizondo later went on record to say the case, and others looked at by the AATIP, showed "there was very compelling evidence that we are not alone”.
Other debunkers have agreed it could well be a plane.
UFO believers discussing the SETI broadcast on debate website Reddit.com were not amused by the claims.
One posted today: "So our naval pilots are not trained or experienced enough not to be surprised and shocked by what are almost certainly distant jet exhausts?
"Also, he said 'the apparent strange movement of the object was just the camera itself moving, and the banking of the plane in pursuit.'
"Likely story, guys! Our military pilots are just ignorant potatoes in those cockpits with zero training? We just trust them to operate the most advanced and expensive aircraft known to man, but it's Idiocy up there apparently according to this guy. Give me a break."
Humanity has pondered the existence of alien life for centuries. However, it has been in just the past 100 years or so that modern science has backed some of this thinking. Scientists of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s believed that objects appearing on the surface of Mars were canals constructed by aliens. Particularly, astronomer Percival Lowell believed this concept and promoted it in works such as the book Mars As the Abode of Life (1908).
This belief in the scientific community led to a huge amount of pop culture based around the concept of extraterrestrials. This has resulted in some people even believing in the existence of aliens like the ones in the movies. Who knows? They could be out there. But some wonder how probable their existence is.
With aliens constantly being depicted in entertainment, even after the Martian alien canal hypothesis was busted, scientists considered communicating with otherworldly life forms. The first scientists looking for a close encounter believed the best bet was to use radio waves as the communication medium. The first of such proposed experiments was conducted in 1960 by astronomer Frank Drake.
One of the most eye-opening quotes about extraterrestrial alien life comes from the book Time for the Stars by Alan Lightman. The author states, “Are we alone in the universe? Few questions are more profound… Extraterrestrial contact would forever change the way we view our place in the cosmos” (Lightman 21).
Drake would definitely not be the last scientist to attempt to summon a response from an alien. But this was the first modern example of tests which would now be referred to as part of SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. In 1980, to bring more of a public interest to SETI, the legendary astrophysicist, astronomer, and astrobiologist Carl Sagan and several others formed The Planetary Society. In more recent years, other programs with goals similar to SETI’s have been established such as METI, messaging extraterrestrial intelligence.
Apart from radio waves, humans have tried other ways of communicating with hypothetical aliens. One example is a plaque which was attached to the Pioneer 10 probe in 1972. This plaque would be a unique kind of “message in a bottle,” except the ocean it was doomed to drift in was far more vast than any sea on Earth. It was inquired of Carl Sagan about sending such a message several months before the scheduled departure of the craft. So Sagan went to work, and assisting him with this undertaking was none other than Frank Drake, the man who had conducted the first modern SETI tests in 1960. The fruit of numerous labors and laborers, the Pioneer 10 plaque that was sent into space depicted a man and a woman and several objects. Through the imagery, the scientists were trying to give any aliens who might see this plaque an idea of what humans are like and where Earth is located.
This could be the first big mistaken researchers are making. They are looking to make contact. They are putting their faith in a sci-fi movie concept. What these scientists are attempting to do is call up and have a conversation with an alien or, better yet, a race of aliens. This is not to say that SETI is pointless, but it might not be the most opportune method for seeking alien life.
Perhaps scientists should strive to discover life in its simpler forms. As Lee Billings of Scientific American states in a recent article, if you were able to travel to another planet it is likely “you would find a planet dominated by microbes rather than charismatic megafauna.” Many scientists are now suggesting microscopic organisms could be more plentiful throughout the cosmos than macroscopic creatures.

A specific search for such minuscule life forms is not a new practice. Bacteria are, of course, microbes. Astrobiologists like Richard Hoover and Dave McKay have examined certain meteorites. Some of the microscopic structures found embedded in or on the space relics resemble bacteria. They have released their findings in past years. They have admitted that even though the fossilized structures appear to be remnants of bacteria there is still some skepticism as to whether those structures are alien in origin. This is because bacteria from Earth could have been attached to the meteorites once they entered our atmosphere.
So how do scientists narrow down the search for alien life even further? Billings’ piece may give us the best idea available at the moment. He informs his readers that one of oxygen’s properties is that it tends to descend from an atmosphere in the form of mineral oxides. It does not remain in its gaseous phase for long. Because of its nature, in an atmosphere such as Earth’s, the oxygen has to be reinstituted on a regular basis.
Astrobiologists have to accept oxygen may be one of the least familiar elements they come upon when studying potential life-supporting bodies. For example, atmospheric chemist David Catling has said the atmosphere of a world dominated by microscopic life could be largely comprised of methane and carbon dioxide gases. Keeping this in mind, this will hopefully narrow down the most likely planet candidates for life.
As the universe is unimaginably expansive and constantly growing, there’s pretty much no chance we everyday Earthlings will never get to see the majesty of deepest space firsthand. Scientists at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), however, have given us a very compelling alternative.
Along with the Swedish Planetarium design company SCISS, researchers with the museum helped to develop a computer program called UniView that lets non-astronauts zip through the universe at light speed. It even lets you stop by your favorite planets or moons in the solar system.
On Wednesday, Jackie Faherty, an AMNH senior scientist who worked on the program, demoed the visualization software at the Inverse Lunar Eclipse Party and Science Fair at Caveat in New York City. To put it mildly, it blew our collective minds.
“The layers that you’re seeing, those are images taken by spacecrafts so we didn’t make a lot of what you’re seeing up,” Faherty tells Inverse. “I can fly us completely out of the solar system, out of the Milky Way, and even to the edge of the known universe.”
Faherty showed onlookers what UniView could do by flying to Saturn and showing us the gas giant’s huge ring systems. She couldn’t resist taking a pit stop at her favorite celestial object in the solar system along the way, which is one of Saturn’s many moons — Enceladus.

“Enceladus is covered with this icy crust and there are these cracks that are all over it,” Faherty explained. “What’s happening is that Enceladus has geysers that are blowing off material from an underwater ocean and they’re polluting the one of the planet’s ring systems, it’s dumping material onto the other moons. It explains so much of what we saw going on in the moon system.”
