A video shared widely since mid-Jan 2018 purports to show a Vertical UFO Alien Spotted Over Mexico. Interestingly, the Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) was shown as first ‘Alien sighting’ of 2018. The flying object seen in the video was in fact not identified, but the claim that it belongs to Aliens is certainly not true.

The video shows a driver capturing on camera an upright object flying in the air over sky in Mexico. YouTube channel Virality TV shared the video as first UFO sighting in Mexico, suggesting Alien watch. However, Facebook user Ufologo Pedro Ramírez, who calls himself UFOlogist, shared it in early Jan 2018. As a matter of fact, he suggested the tubular UFO hovering over Mexican sky is a proof of Aliens watching our activity in space.
Not Alien
Firstly, the vertical UFO object was captured on camera from a moving vehicle. So, it gives a false impression that the object is flying fast in sky. Once the video became popular online, YouTube user Louis aguilar posted a video showing similar object flying in San Antonio, Texas.
Intrigued viewers suggested the UFO in Mexico could be a drone in the US border region, a weather balloon or a man testing some kind of Jet Pack. As you can see in the images, the shape of the UFO remains same through the flight in the first place. Likewise, it resembles the shape of a Stormtrooper Helium Balloon, which are widely available as novelty gifts. In the video below, you can see couple of such balloons flying in sky. Furthermore, it was new year time, so it is probably the case.

Fake Science Paper About 'Star Trek' and Warp 10 Was Accepted by 'Predatory Journals'

In the "Star Trek" universe, the fantastic speed of warp 10 has remained annoyingly out of reach. However, a recent paper in an open-access journal describes an experiment that attempted to break that boundary.
The fact that the "experiment" described in the paper wasn't conducted in a real-world laboratory, but in an episode of the sci-fi TV series "Star Trek: Voyager," reveals just how easy it is to publish fake science in some so-called "predatory journals."
The paper's author, a biologist for 30 years and a fan of "Star Trek," wrote up a research paper based on the "Voyager" episode. He submitted it to 10 open-access journals known or suspected of charging authors publication fees without providing the editorial services associated with legitimate journals, such as careful peer review and vetting of the paper's claims. Four accepted it, though only one, the American Research Journal of Biosciences, published the paper.
These so-called predatory journals have low or non-existent scientific standards and a willingness to print any papers submitted.
"Predatory journals aim only to make money from researchers," Jeffrey Beall, a research librarian at the University of Colorado, Denver, told Space.com by email. Beall has long worked to expose predatory journals. At one point, he maintained an online list of them, though ongoing harassment against Beall, his employer and his colleagues resulted in him taking it down last year. The list has been reposted at various sites on the web.
Of the four predatory journals that accepted the paper, none recognized the blatant falsification, even those providing peer review. The paper's author, "BioTrekkie," identified himself to Space.com but asked to remain anonymous, as the journals could potentially seek legal retribution because he sent fabricated results. (The journal declined to respond to questions from Space.com.)
BioTrekkie said he was motivated by a similar "Star Wars" experiment, in which a paper on the fictional midichlorians behind the Force was published by an open-access journal. That paper was a sting operation by the so-called Neuroskeptic, who blogs pseudonymously for Discover Magazine. According to Neuroskeptic, the purpose was to expose predatory journals that claim to offer peer-reviewed open-access publications but will publish anything for a fee.
"Midichlorians are sometimes criticized as one of the most ridiculous elements of the 'Star Wars' universe, so I thought I needed to even things out by picking what is arguably one of the scientifically worst episodes of 'Star Trek,'" BioTrekkie told Space.com by email.
"I was also curious what sort of responses I might get by the subset that reviewed the paper," he said.
A fictional experiment
BioTrekkie's research follows "Voyager" Episode 32, "Threshold," where Lt. Thomas Paris rigs an experimental shuttle to cross the warp 10 boundary. (This concept involves ships going faster that the speed of light and has absolutely no remotely similar real-world analogy.) After a successful trip, the now-deranged Paris kidnaps Capt. Kathryn Janeway for a second trip. After crossing the transwarp boundary, both find themselves rapidly evolved into what is apparently humanity's future amphibious state. By the time the crew finds the pair, they have had several children. Eventually, both Paris and Janeway are returned to their human form. [Star Trek Captains, Ranked From Worst to Best]
The paper describes the plot of the episode as research. The paper uses the word "celerity," which means extreme speed, in its title, but further down BioTrekkie parenthetically describes the theoretical maximum celerity as "warp 10." Despite this and other fictions, including those involving the author and affiliation, the paper was published as legitimate research.
"Many of the predatory publishers are based in Asia or Africa and their owners may be unfamiliar with the 'Star Trek' characters," Beall said, when asked how editors could have overlooked such obvious jargon.
Because the characters were returned to their human forms by the end of the episode, BioTrekkie suggested that the sudden mutations wouldn't necessarily stop the crew from breaking warp 10 in the future.
"Seemingly everything in our future can be fixed with a damper or compensator," BioTrekkie told Space.com. These fixes are common in the "Star Trek" universe.
The paper calls for future studies on the impact of warp 10 on human genetics and physical changes.
Speaking as though the experiment were fact instead of fiction, BioTrekkie said, "Given we now know what to expect, we can impose the intense antiproton burst regiment treatment early— we can build it into the shuttle as a metamorphosis compensator."

"Very little direct science substance"
Academic journal subscriptions can be costly, which keeps their research out of reach for some scientists and the public. In recent years, publishers have founded open-access journals that allow anyone to read their publications, no cost required. These journals make their money by charging author fees to those whose papers have been submitted for publication.
But some journals can take this too far. So-called predatory journals focus more on the fees and less on the scientific accuracy.
Predatory journals "are not selective in what they publish," Beall said. "They are essentially counterfeit journals, mimicking the look and feel of legitimate online journals, but with the singular goal of making easy money."
BioTrekkie's "research" isn't the first to target predatory journals. The enormous amount of spam that researchers receive by email may have prompted the submission of one paper that repeats its title phrase, "Get Me Off Your F---ing Mailing List," for 10 pages straight, as reported by Vox.
Inspired by recent stings, and motivated to get "Star Trek" published alongside the earlier "Star Wars" "research," BioTrekkie published his new paper, which listed six "Star Trek: Voyager" crewmembers as authors. All six were affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Starfleet Academy. The contact was given as a Gmail address.
Of the 10 open-access journals he selected, only one noted that Starfleet Academy appeared to be a fictional affiliation. No one noticed the "Star Trek" references, despite the fact that the research used the recognizable phrase "'warp 10."
Five journals did not respond to the paper.
"That's a high rate, so I'm thinking at least some of them figured it was a fake," BioTrekkie said.
Four others accepted the paper pending some minor revisions. The fifth remaining journal, which had identified the fictional affiliation, rejected the paper because it had already been published online in the American Research Journal of Biosciences.
"Among the four that accepted it, two provided no reviewer feedback at all, and the other two did each provide a supposed peer review," BioTrekkie said. [Medical Journal Retracts Jesus Miracle Paper]
Peer review is a staple of academic research, with scientists not involved in the research reviewing the methods and asking for clarifications. The process helps to ensure experiments are repeatable when possible, along with evaluating whether the results support the author's interpretation. The peer review provided by the two journals was not up to par.
"There was very little direct scientific substance," BioTrekkie said. "The reviews were of the kind I might expect from someone with some basic undergraduate background in biology or statistics."
According to BioTrekkie, reputable open-access journals nearly always charge a hefty publication fee, which they will occasionally waive for authors without funding. Non-open-access journals sometimes have very low or no fees, especially if the author is a member of the society publishing the journal. While reputable journals exist to exchange scientific information, predatory journals focus on profits.
"For that reason, most predatory journals are open-access, so they can make money," he said.
All four journals that accepted that paper had hefty publication fees initially, he said. Only one agreed to waive the fee completely when he said he had no dedicated grant funds, but that one went silent after the paper was submitted. Others were willing to drop the fee, though not completely.
"The one in which I ultimately published the paper — which was also one of the ones that did provide a peer review—did so for $50, when the original invoice was $749," he said. He paid that money out-of-pocket.
Because he was paying the fees himself, he opted not to publish the paper in the other three journals.
So why would a journal whose only goal was to make money lower its fee?
"For marketing purposes, predatory journals often waive fees or offer discounts to attract article submissions, especially when they are first starting out," Beall said. The goal is to fill up their journal with published articles, giving it an appearance of legitimacy.
"Empty journals are suspicious, but journals full of papers look like successful journals to some," Beall said.
The ten journals BioTrekkie submitted the new research to seem to be following that strategy successfully. The author said a quick look at just a couple of the papers revealed the journals' willingness to publish whatever they were sent. In most cases, other published papers were "insubstantive, poorly described, poorly supported," he said.
On the other hand, some of the papers seemed legitimate, leading him to wonder if the authors knew they were submitting to sketchy journals. It's possible that some researchers considered that submitting to such a journal was better than remaining unpublished.
"Despite working in my science field for decades, no one else I know personally has intentionally sent their works to one of their journals — it would reflect quite poorly on their résumé, I think — even as a last resort, so I think that's quite rare," BioTrekkie said.
UFO? The strange object was seen in pictures taken on a fishing trip.
The picture, taken in Nelson ledges state park in Garrettsville, Nelson, Ohio, USA, has a strange torpedo-shaped object in the top-left corner above a lake and trees.
Investigators at the US-based Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) were sent the image for analysis.
MUFON is the world's largest organisation dedicated to UFO and alien research and it keeps a global database of sightings, many of which are investigated.
A son of the man, who has not been named by MUFON, sent in the image with a report.
But the organisation has previously admitted that it does get inundated with hoax footage by pranksters and other individuals, which in some cases have to undergo initial assessment, tying up investigators.
The organisation accepts that this is one of the pitfalls of being an organisation dedicated to such research.
MUFON investigator Peter Davenport said on the website: "One of the greatest burdens that UFO investigators have to bear, in the course of their collecting and investigating sighting reports submitted by members of the public, is the deluge of apparently false reports and cases of mistaken identity that have to be waded through, and eliminated from, the stream of incoming data.
"What prompts people to create and submit bogus reports is unclear, save for the apparently widespread lack of self-discipline, and lack of concern for others, that seems all too common in mankind.
"However, the fact remains that such deception takes place constantly, and that it probably will continue in ufology, and elsewhere, until long after we have finally laid to rest the mystery of UFOs."
Scott Brando runs debunking website Ufoofinterest.org.
He believes it was a genuine picture and not a hoax, but not evidence of aliens.
He said: " I don't think it's a hoax. The sender says his dad was fishing and decided to take a couple pictures for memories.
"He realised later on while looking at the pictures noticed this odd object.
"That object could be something launched in the water during the fish, like a stone.
"It's hard to identify it but I'd like to see the original picture, not a cropped image."
Sorry for that tabloid-y headline but it’s exactly what happened. A mummy called the “Screaming Mummy” because its face was preserved in a picture of agony has been removed from storage and put on display this week at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo for the first time since it was moved there for safekeeping. The exhibition coincides with a definitive revelation as to the reason behind the mummy’s scream.
‘The gruesome mummy of Unknown Man E, also known as the “Screaming Mummy,” has long puzzled scholars. Such unusual mummification has perplexed Egyptologists and no one has succeeded in knowing the story behind such a mummy until the launch of the Egyptian Mummy Project several years ago under my direction to create a complete database of forensic information related to the mummy collection at the Egyptian Museum.”
Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, the former Minister of Antiquities who led the Egyptian Mummies Project, told Al-Ahram Weekly(more pictures here) what the researchers have found after more detailed studies of its skin and a new analysis of its DNA.
Deir el-Bahari
But first, a little background.
In 1881, a tomb-robber named Abd el-Rassul claimed to have discovered a cache of mummified remains and funeral artifacts in a tomb next to Deir el-Bahri, in the Theban Necropolis (later research shows it may have been found 10 years earlier). After realizing it was a royal tomb, he and a brother plundered it until being caught selling the artifacts on the black market. Egyptologist were brought in and performed a different kind of plundering – they quickly (within 48 hours) removed the mummies and artifacts from the tomb (now called TT 320) without recording their placements, damaging much in the process.
By far the strangest discovery in TT 320 was the screaming mummy or “Unknown Man E.” Initial analysis showed that the body had been embalmed quickly without the standard removal of its brain and internal organs. The cedar coffin appeared to have been roughly widened to fit the body, suggesting the family had some reason to bury it quickly. What was it?
According to Hawass, the body was wrapped in sheepskin, symbolizing that the person was considered to be impure. Its hands and feet were tied with leather straps. In fact, it was not even mummified – the body was merely dried, then had resin poured into its open mouth, preserving the scream look. The biggest discovery was marks around the neck — evidence that the person died by hanging.
Those marks, coupled with the DNA analysis showing that the Screaming Mummy was closely related to Ramses III, a conspiracy story detailed in the famous Harem Conspiracy Papyrus (on display at the Museo Egizio in Turin) and the disgraceful way the body was preserved and buried convinced Hawass that Unknown Man E was indeed Prince Pentawere, the son who plotted the murder of his father Ramses III and was sentenced to death for his role in the conspiracy which was led by his mother, Tiye, who hoped to make him pharaoh instead of Ramses IV. While it’s now known that Pentawere died by hanging, it’s not evident if it was by execution or by suicide.
Unlike his tomb, the case appears to be airtight that the Screaming Mummy is Prince Pentawere. And yes, Prince Penteware and the Screaming Mummies would be a great name for a band.

De officiële naam van het vliegtuig luidt ’Quiet Supersonic Transport (QueSST). Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden vliegt het toestel sneller dan het geluid, 1.700 kilometer per uur om precies te zijn. Bovendien is NASA erin geslaagd de supersonische knal te dempen. Wanneer een vliegtuig door de geluidsmuur vliegt, gaat dat gepaard met een knal en bij de Concorde leidde die vaak tot geluidsoverlast.
Een woordvoerder van NASA liet eerder al weten dat de organisatie ernaar streeft om de supersonische knal zo te dempen dat hij nog amper merkbaar is voor de mensen op de grond. “De knal moet even stil worden als een verre donderslag of als het geluid van een buurman die de deur van zijn auto toeslaat.”
Vliegtuigbouwer Lockheed Martin maakte al een eerste ontwerp voor de QueSST, maar NASA spoort andere bedrijven aan om ook een ontwerp in te dienen.
NASADe QueSST
Als alles volgens plan verloopt moet de QueSST in 2021 zijn eerste vlucht maken. Het toestel geldt vooral als voorbeeld voor vliegtuigbouwers, die in de toekomst snellere lijnvliegtuigen zullen bouwen. “De QueSST zal Amerikaanse bedrijven aanzetten om snellere commerciële vliegtuigen te bouwen, wat zal leiden tot meer jobs en kortere reistijden”, luidt het bij het Amerikaanse ministerie van Begroting, dat dit jaar liefst 19,9 miljard dollar (16,1 miljard euro) uittrok voor NASA. Dat is 500 miljoen dollar meer dan vorig jaar.
WETENSCHAP & PLANEETDe schreeuwende mummie is een mysterie dat experts al meer dan 100 jaar bezighoudt. Nu menen archeologen dat ze een belangrijk puzzelstuk hebben gevonden om het geheim achter deze archeologische vondst te ontrafelen.
Wanneer archeologen in juni 1886 het gemummificeerde lichaam ontdekten, waren ze verrast door de gelaatsuitdrukking van deze jonge man. Het lijkt wel alsof hij aan het roepen was toen hij zijn laatste adem uitblies. Iets wat archeologen nog nooit eerder gezien hadden. Sinds zijn vondst werd volop gespeculeerd over de achtergrond van deze bijzondere mummie.
Verschillende theorieën werden geopperd over de schijnbaar pijnlijke dood van de man. De meest populaire is dat het om prins Pentewere, de zoon van farao Ramses III en een van zijn vrouwen Tiye, gaat. Die had het plan om zijn vader te vermoorden om zo de troon te kunnen bestijgen, maar die poging mislukte. Daarom moest de man voor de rechter verschenen. Zijn straf? Hij moest zichzelf van het leven beroven.
Maar de laatste theorieën trekken dat in twijfel. Professor Bob Brier, een archeoloog aan de universiteit van Long Island in New York, heeft het lichaam onlangs onderzocht en heeft ontdekt waarom deze man een erg ongewone gelaatsuitdrukking had. “Deze mummie is onderhevig aan twee krachten: eentje die zijn lichaam wil afbreken en eentje die hem wil bewaren. Om de een of andere reden was er iemand die er zeker van wilde zijn dat hij niet in het hiernamaals nog een leven zou hebben. Maar dan was er een andere persoon die wel om deze persoon gaf en heeft geprobeerd te voorkomen dat zijn lichaam zou vergaan.”
Schapenhuid
Professor Zahi Hawass, voormalig hoofd van de Egyptische Hoge Raad van Antiquiteiten, zegt dat de kans groot is dat de mummie een prins was die zijn familie ten schande heeft gebracht. Hij werd namelijk begraven met andere leden van de koninklijke familie. Maar hij was bedekt met schapenhuid, dit was in de tijd van de oude Egyptenaren een teken dat je niet ‘schoon’ was, dat deze persoon iets slechts in zijn leven had gedaan. We hebben nog nooit een mummie als deze gezien, die zichtbaar aan het lijden is. Deze abnormale gelaatsuitdrukking vertelt ons dat er iets gebeurd is, maar we weten niet wat.”
De schreeuwende mummie wordt nu voor het eerst in het Egyptisch museum in Caïro tentoongesteld.

For an object that wasn’t discovered until it was already on its way back to wherever it came from, Oumuamua has certainly garnered a lot of publicity. First, of course, it was determined that the cigar-shaped thing was the first known interstellar object to pass through our Solar System. Arguments about what kind of object it is were seemingly settled when astronomers determined it was an asteroid, not a comet, but a strange asteroid with an icy center. That hasn’t pacified the small but vocal group that still believes it’s an abandoned space ship/robotic craft from another civilization. It also didn’t explain why Oumuamua was tumbling nor why it had such an odd surface.
Since it blew by, a team of researchers at Queen’s University Belfast have been studying Oumuamua and think they’ve solved at least some of its mysteries. Led by Dr. Wes Fraser, they analyzed light reflected from the cuts and angles on its surface and, like investigators at the scene of a hit-and-run auto accident, were able to determine that Oumuamua also collided with something and that impact severely damaged its surface and disrupted its rotation as it shoved the planetesimal out of its own solar system and on a path to ours.
“While we don’t know the cause of the tumbling, we predict that it was most likely sent tumbling by an impact with another planetesimal in its system, before it was ejected into interstellar space.”
Their research, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, shows that Oumuamua is spinning “chaotically,” a condition generally caused by a violent impact. Their model indicates this could have occurred billions of years ago and it may take billions more before the shaking and tumbling stops and Oumuamua returns to looking like a tight Nick Foles spiral pass (sorry Tom Brady).
Like the mix of scratched paint, paint from the other car, bare metal and rust that you see after a car accident, the collision may also explain the mysterious variety of colors – from dark red to “dirty snow” — on Oumuamua.
“Most of the surface reflects neutrally but one of its long faces has a large red region. This argues for broad compositional variations, which is unusual for such a small body.”
Knowing all of this will help astronomers in their quest to find more small, dark, chaotic objects with violent pasts like Oumuamua. This is starting to sound like a soap opera, a murder mystery and a sci-fi thriller rolled into one.

After resigning from the department in October to join a UFO research group, Luis released two videos caught on US Navy pilot radar cameras.
He pointed out that the craft in the video moved in ways that defied physics.
US Navy pilots filmed one of the military radar videos in November 2004 off the coast of San Diego. The pilots described observing various UFOs.
The bizarre case became known as the Nimitz UFO Incident.
However, sceptics have been saying that the video only involved a wrongly identified plane. It prompted Mr Elizondo to reveal there is more to come, including encounters with unknown technology that is more advanced than anything in the military around the world, which documented in video recordings. He said that around 24 other UFO videos are being declassified for release in the coming months to the public.
Answering back at those who claimed they only showed planes, he said that the object came into a near hover state and took off suddenly over the horizon in just two seconds, so it could not be just a plane. He added that it was not also an IR glare or IR fuzz because you cannot lock radar on it.

More than 80 years ago, Chinese archaeologists discovered a cave system with chilling skeletons with elongated heads, a cosmic map, and more than 700 strange discs…
The mysterious discovery was allegedly made in 1930 when Chi Pu Tei, an archeology professor at Peking University and his students were on an expedition to explore a series of caves in the inaccessible mountains of Bayan Kara Ula, near Tibet, which were supposedly carved artificially in a system of underground tunnels and pantries.
According to these events, it is said that professor Chi Pu Tei and his students found tombs with skeletons of 1.38 m (4 ft 6 in) in height buried inside them. The skeletons would have had abnormally large heads and small, thin and fragile bodies. In addition to the skeletal remains, professor Chi Pu Tei and his students discovered countless other items.
It was suggested that these skeletal remains could have belonged to an unknown species of a mountain gorilla, but Professor Chi Pu Tei did not agree and responded: “Whoever heard about monkeys burying each other?”
There were no epitaphs in the tombs, but instead, they found more than 700 stone discs (“Dropa Stones”) with 8 cm holes in diameter at their centers.
On the walls, carvings of the rising sun, the moon, stars, the earth, mountains, and dotted lines linking the earth with the sky were found.
The discs and the cave paintings are said to date approximately 12,000 years. Their whereabouts today remains a mystery.
All of this raised a great mystery: Who were these mysterious beings? What were the enigmatic discs, and where did the star maps carved on the cave walls lead to?
Dropa Discs

Each stone disc, reportedly, would have been inscribed with two thin grooves that spiral from the edge to the central hole.
It is believed that the enigmatic Dropa Discs and other items discovered during the expedition were kept at the Peking University for 20 years.
All attempts to decipher the writing on the Dropa Discs were useless.
However, the discs were examined by Dr. Tsum Um Nui, in Beijing around 1958, who concluded that each groove consisted of a set of tiny hieroglyphs of unknown origin.
The rows were so small that a magnifying glass was necessary to see them clearly. Many of the hieroglyphics were worn out by erosion.
When Dr. Tsum allegedly deciphered the symbols, he revealed how the ancient writings tell a story of an otherworldly encounter where an ancient alien ship crash landed on Earth some 12,000 years ago.
According to Tsum Um Nui, one of the hieroglyphic lines read: “The Dropas came down from the clouds in their aircraft. Our men, women, and children hid in the caves ten times before sunrise. When at last they understood the sign language of the Dropas, they realized that the newcomers had peaceful intentions.”
Another section reads “regret” of the inhabitants of the mountain (tribe of the Ham) because the aliens had crashed their ship and could not build another to return to their planet.
Dr. Tsum reportedly published his discovery in 1962.
However, he would have been mocked to such an extent that he left China in exile moving to Japan, where he would later die.
It is said that the Beijing Pre-History Academy would never have allowed him to publish or discuss his find again.
Furthermore, due to the fact that “Tsum Um Nui” is not a real Chinese name, some critics suggest that the man never existed.
Others claim that Tsum Um Nui is a Japanese name adapted to the Chinese language. In addition to his theories about the Dropa, there is no further evidence that he ever existed.
In 1974, Ernst Wegerer, an Austrian engineer, photographed two discs that matched the descriptions of the Dropa Stones. He was on a guided tour of the Bampo Museum in Xian, when he saw the stone discs.

He said he observed a hole in the center of each disk and hieroglyphs in grooves, partly crumbled, like a spiral. It is said that when he enquired about the discs the manager could tell him nothing, but permitted him to take one in his hand and photograph them. He claims that in his photos the hieroglyphs cannot be seen as they have been hidden by the flash from the camera and have also deteriorated. By 1994, the discs and the manager had disappeared from the museum.
Critics largely rejected the story of the Dropa discs, arguing that it was a mixture of deception and urban legend.
For example, writer David Richie mentions that these stories intrigued Gordon Chreighton, a member of the Royal Society of Anthropology and the Royal Society of Geography.
In the investigation, Chreighton considered the allegations about the Dropa “unfounded,” and detailed his findings in an article for the Flying Saucer Review.
It is not easy to find credible evidence to show that the Dropa Stones exist or have existed in the past.
Defenders of the story claim that it is the result of a social disruption caused by the Chinese Cultural Revolution and a cover-up conspired by the authorities of that country.
However, this goes beyond China; since those who oppose the history of the Dropa, claim that it is a deception of Erich von Däniken.

In 1936, during excavations on a hill in Kujut Rabua, a village southeast of Baghdad (Iraq), workers of the Iraqi State Railway Department discovered an old grave covered with a stone slab.
For two months, the Iraqi Department of Antiquities extracted a total of 613 beads, clay figurines, chiseled bricks and other pieces.
They were dated between 248 BC and 226 AD.
They also found unique terracotta pots, shaped like a vase and of a light yellowish color, containing a cylinder made of a rolled copper sheet, which houses a single iron rod. The container measured 14 cm high by 4 cm in diameter, while the copper cylinder measured 9 cm high by 2.6 cm in diameter. At the top, the iron rod is isolated from the copper by bitumen, with plugs or stoppers, and both rod and cylinder fit snugly inside the opening of the jar.
In 1939 German archaeologist Wilhelm König, then in charge of the State Museum Laboratory in Baghdad, identified the mysterious artifacts as a probable ancient electric battery.
He described his finding in 9 Jahre Iraq, published in Austria in 1940.
Respecters analyzed the alleged batters trying to prove they were really used as such. During one occasion, an electrolyte was placed inside it, connected to a lamp, which eventually turned on. The official report that was written later said that this object behaved exactly like a modern electric battery.
Once he returned to the Berlin Museum, König tried finding more similar items and found cylinders, rods and similar artifacts from Mesopotamia; all of them with thin iron and bronze rods. It seemed to him that these “batteries” could have been joined in series (one after the other) to increase the voltage for a greater power output.
If these mystery artifacts were really batteries, it would change a lot about ancient civilizations, and their capabilities and level of technology.
After World War II, Willard Gray, an electronics engineer at the High Voltage Laboratory of the General Electric Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, manufactured a duplicate of these batteries and filled them with copper sulfate ( although he stated that another liquid electrolyte could have been used within the reach of the inhabitants of Iraq at the time, like ordinary grape juice).

To the surprise of many, the battery operated and generated between one and two volts.
As noted by Dennielle Downs, and Ava Meyerhoff from the Smith College, “There is no written record as to the exact function of the jar, but the best guess is that it was a type of battery. Scientists believe the batteries (if that is their correct function) were used to electroplate items such as putting a layer of one metal (gold) onto the surface of another (silver), a method still practiced in Iraq today.”
Despite the fact there is evidence that the enigmatic objects could have produced electricity, the real purpose of the ‘Baghdad Batteries’ remains a mystery for many scholars.
The Discovery Channel’s series ‘Myth Busters’ built replicas of the jars to see if it was indeed possible for them to have been used for electroplating or electrostimulation in ancient times.
On MythBusters’ 29th episode (March 23, 2005), the crew behind the series produced ten hand-made terracotta jars fitted to act as batteries.
Lemon juice was chosen as the electrolyte to activate the electrochemical reaction between the copper and iron.
Connected in series, the batteries produced 4 volts of electricity.
When linked in series, the cells had sufficient power to electroplate a small token.
Welcome to another edition of “Celebrity UFO Spotting,” where contestants try to figure out if a famous person’s unidentified flying object or ET sighting report is real or a desperate attempt to garner publicity for a new movie, book or album. Today’s celebrity is Kim Wilde. If you said “Who?” or “I didn’t know she was still around,” that’s a point in favor of “Must have a new album coming out.” See how this works?
In an interview in the current edition of Attitude magazine, Kim Wilde reveals that she had her UFO encounter in 2009.
“There were a couple of massive lights just above the clouds, going backwards and forwards in an extraordinary way. Quite a lot of people witnessed them, it made the local papers.”
Well, according to a UK UFO report, on June 26, 2009, a UFO was reported in Hertfordshire where Kim lived at the time. One point for Kim.
“When you see something as extraordinary and maybe extra-terrestrial like that you’re never quite the same. I believe they’re here already or visiting, watching us. I haven’t gone loopy, I just can’t stop thinking about it.”
That’s a common reaction among people who have witnessed UFOs.
Another point for Kim.
“I said to my husband that maybe the captain was a big Kim Wilde fan and wanted to know where I live. I’m worried he’s going to beam me up and I’ll have to sing “Kids in America” to him for the rest of my life. I’m worried they’re going to come back and take me away.”
Oh, Kim, you were doing so well! Getting a plug in for your biggest hit sounds like you’re promoting something. And … she is! Her new album, with her first new songs in 22 years, is called “Here Come The Aliens” and is scheduled to be released on March 16. After that, she hits the concert stage with a European tour called … you guessed it … the Here Come the Aliens Tour. Sorry, Kim, that’s three points to the other side for plugging an album, plugging a tour and referring to aliens in the names of both.
There’s something else strange about Wilde’s UFO story. In an interview in OK! Magazine in 2015, Kim talks about the same UFO sighting, only this time connects it to something significant that happened the day before … Michael Jackson’s death.
“It was 26 June, the day after Michael Jackson died, and me and my mate were in the garden and we saw bright lights in the sky … They were about 20 times the size of an aeroplane … It was so huge, two of them, going zig-zag for 10 minutes.”
Did you think the captain of the ship was coming to abduct you, Kim?
“It was the day after Michael Jackson died and I thought, ‘He is coming back to haunt me!’
That may have been what Kim actually felt if and when she saw the UFO, since she didn’t have anything to plug in 2015. Sorry, Kim … two more points to the other side for changing your story just to plug a CD and dumping a really good about Michael Jackson.

In the Pisces constellation, 100 light-years away, NASA’s Kepler/K2 mission has discovered a Super-Earth eight times larger than Planet Earth.
Super-Earths are extra-solar planets with greater masses than earth. The name refers only to its size, and not to its composition, which could be rocky or gassy. This is far from the only Super-Earth that the Kepler mission has discovered.
Composition helps determine the history of a planet, so this discovery could provide further insights on how planets form, especially since there are no planets of this size in our solar system.
The recently discovered Super-Earth, known as Planet B, is one of three in the constellation, all of which are larger than our earth. At eight times the size of Earth, Planet B represents one of the most massive and densest super-earths found to date. The masses for the other two Super-Earths, Planet C and Planet D, are very roughly estimated to be about two and a half and four times the Earth’s mass, respectively.

By looking at planetary mass and radius, scientists can calculate the planets’ bulk density, which provides clues as to whether they are rocky — like Earth — or gassy, like Neptune. Scientists have found that when planets have a radii about 1.7 times greater than Earth, they are more likely to be surrounded by a gassy atmosphere, like Neptune, while those that are smaller are more likely to be rocky, like our Earth.
And with radii between 1.29 and 2.08, there are both rocky and gassy planets among these three.
Of course, the radii alone is not definitive, as Sharon Wang, one of the Carnegie scientists that made the discovery, cautioned. “More observations are needed to pin down the compositions of these three planets, but they do seem like some of the best candidates to test our ideas about how super-Earths form and evolve…”

It is said that the universe is made up of over 80 percent dark matter. What dark matter exactly is, however, has continued to elude experts. Theories abound, and a recent one suggests an entirely different approach involving gravitational waves.
BREAKING SYMMETRY
For decades now, the exact composition of matter in the universe has baffled astronomers and physicists alike. It would seem that, given the basic assumptions about the origins of the universe, there is still no way to account for the “missing” dark matter that makes up for as much as a quarter of all matter in the universe. That’s why a trio of researchers has proposed a new dark matter theory, which could explain how dark matter came about.
We know dark matter exists because we can observe how its gravity interacts with visible matter and electromagnetic radiation. There is something there, although we can’t yet see it, or put a finger on what it is.
In the new study, Evan McDonough and Stephon Alexander from Brown University, with David Spergel from Princeton University, suggest that a mechanism involving gravitational waves — basically, ripples in the fabric of space and time, first theorized by Einstein and confirmed to exist only in 2016 — could explain how dark matter came to be.
McDonough’s team used a model of the primordial universe that assumed the presence of particles called dark matter quarks, which aren’t the same as today’s dark matter. These dark quarks could have a property called chirality, referring to the way the particles twist, similar to neutrinos. The chirality or “handedness” of these dark quarks could have then interacted with the chiral gravitational waves in the early universe, producing the kind of dark matter we have today.
LIGHTER AND WIMPIER
Supposedly, as the universe settled into a cooler state, the interactions between chiral dark quarks and chiral gravitational waves resulted in a small excess of the former. These condensed into a quirky state of matter called a superfluid, which could still exist as a background field today. What we know to be dark matter are proposed as excitations of this background field, in the same way photons are excitations of an electromagnetic field.
Interestingly, the dark matter particles resulting from such a model would be lighter than what’s known as weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which many researchers believe could make up dark matter. There hasn’t been enough evidence to suggest, however, that this is the case. At any rate, being lighter than WIMPs would mean that dark matter wouldn’t interact with normal matter. “It’s much wimpier than WIMPs,” Spergel told New Scientist.
As such, this dark matter theory could change how we should “look” for dark matter, as it wouldn’t be possible to see such particles directly at all. Unlike WIMPs, these particles would also be distributed more evenly across the galaxy. At the same time, the ratio of dark matter and normal matter wouldn’t necessarily be constant throughout the universe.
Spergel explained, however, that this unique behavior could also provide us with a way to find dark matter. A more uniform, non-clustered distribution of dark matter could spill over into cosmic microwave background — the Big Bang’s residual radiation — and produce a unique signature. It could even affect the formation of larger-scale structures, like galaxy clusters. It could also, perhaps, have an effect on gravitational waves.
“It’s a cool idea,” Stanford University’s Michael Peskin, who wasn’t part of the study, told New Scientist. “Right now, dark matter is completely open. Anything you can do that brings in a new idea into this area, it opens a door. And then you have to walk down that corridor and see whether there are interesting things there that suggest new experiments. This opens another door.”

This is not the world of tomorrow, though. This doesn’t take imagination. This is the world today.

It sounds like science fiction, or even “fake news.” But it’s not. It’s a fact that comes from Juan Enriquez, the Founding Director of the Life Sciences Project at Harvard Business School, and the Managing Director of Excel Venture Management. Enriquez spoke at the World Government Summit. I listened to him, entranced by the eloquent way he discussed how gene editing has allowed humans to become masters of their DNA – the source code of life itself.
This mastery, Enriquez explained, has allowed us to take our evolution – to take our fate – into our own hands. And it’s all thanks to a genome editing technique known as CRISPR. “These instruments, like CRISPR, are allowing us to, in real-time, edit life on a grand scale,” he explained. “We are rewriting the sentences of life to our purposes.” Enriquez continued by discussing what this means from a practical standpoint, saying that we are entering a world of “unrandom selection.”
“Science used to be about discovery, now it is about creation.”
Enriquez described how scientists are already working on altering the genes of plants and animals so that they can thrive in locations where, previously, they would languish. He detailed how scientists are also engineering plants and animals to die. According to Enriquez, we have already entered a time when we can accurately say, “Instead of letting nature select what lives here, I’m going to select what lives here.” He concluded, saying with great gravity, “Science used to be about discovery, now it is about creation.”
But with gene editing, we will reshape far more than just our bodies. We will remake our minds.
We will insert memories. We will delete memories. We will alter memories. We will store them and use them in any way we desire. In so doing, Enriquez says we will change more than how our bodies operate – we will become a new kind of human, one that is malleable and, one that can be shaped and reshaped on a whim.
What will we be when we have the ability to literally write and rewrite our memories?
When we think of ourselves, we typically think of our memories. Or memories, we’re told, are what make us who we are. What will we be when we have the ability to literally write and rewrite our memories? What will we be when we can delete all the memories of a dead loved one? What will we become when we can remove those memories about that horrible thing we did? When we can insert memories about that heroic thing that we really didn’t do?
Will we still be us? Will we still be human? At the present juncture, it’s not clear. But this question isn’t something that we can leave to future generations, it is something that we must begin to answer today. The technology is already here, and this day is on the horizon.
Enriquez continued by noting that we are not just rewriting our own biology – by editing DNA and manufacturing it in labs, we are able to save lives on an unprecedented, massive scale. “You can make the world’s flu vaccine in a week instead of a year. And by the way, this is no longer theoretical.”
“Why would anyone want to do this [altering human DNA]?” He asked. “Because, at heart, we are explorers. We have to take control of our own evolution if we want to even think about getting somewhere else.” Humans, he argued, are designed to live on Earth. Billions of years of evolution on this planet are engrained in our DNA. We cannot so easily leave this planet in the dust. Not without altering our bodies to suit other worlds – to suit the deserts of Mars and the icy lakes of Europa.

A GLUT of supposed UFO sightings near a military base in the US has alien enthusiasts concerned extraterrestrials are monitoring our planet’s war preparations.
UFOs have been spotted near Malmstrom Air Force Base
Alien hunters believe that extraterrestrials are watching the goings on at the Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana after a spate of sightings there.
The most recent sighting of an unidentified space craft came on January 24, when a black object, which was reportedly over “half an acre” in size was spotted near the base.
According to website UFO Hunters – which monitors and collects records of sightings – there was a power outage in the region for around 10 minutes at the same time as the sighting.
The website also shows there have been close to 20 sightings within the past decade, making it a true hotspot for UFO activity.
However, sightings there stretch back much longer than the last 10 years.
One former employee at the Malmstrom Air Force Base claims a UFO shut down 10 missiles in 1967.
Capt Robert Salas said: "I was on duty when an object came over and hovered directly over the site.

"The missiles shut down - 10 Minuteman missiles. And the same thing happened at another site a week later. There's a strong interest in our missiles by these objects, wherever they come from. I personally think they're not from planet Earth.”
UFO hunters believe aliens are monitoring military bases in the US.
A recent map from the US-based National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) was released which shows UFO sightings across the States.
However, it has been suggested the most dense areas for sightings coincide with US military installations.
Alex Hollings, a retired US duty marine, now writes for Sofrep.com, a news and intelligence service provided by former special operations veterans.
He wrote: "When laying that same map of reported UFO sightings over a US map showing the locations of all military installations, an interesting trend starts to emerge.
"Many of the regions that seem to show a high frequency of UFO reports coincide with the locations of military installations.
"For the conspiracy minded, this might mean our alien visitors have taken a particular interest in what our military is up to.
"Others might be inclined to conclude many of these supposed UFO sightings may be nothing more than misidentified military aircraft."
Long-lost wreckage from a mini 'flying saucer' which is believed to have crash-landed in the UK in the 1950s has been found in a tin box in London's Science Museum. How exciting.
The small pieces from the 'Silpho UFO' were found stashed inside a cigarette tin inside a storeroom at the museum.
The small 'copper-bottomed flying saucer' was foundon Silpho Moor, north Yorkshire, back in 1957 and made headlines across the country - with some newspapers calling it the 'British Roswell'.

Tests were carried out on the saucer, which was 17-inches in diameter and weighted 14kg. It was found to be covered in weird hieroglyphics and inside there as 17-page book, made of copper, which had a 2,000-word message which was 'translated' by 'experts' who claim it said 'you will improve or disappear'. So, that's us told.
Dr David Clarke from Sheffield Hallam University saw the pieces of potentially-extra-terrestrial-scrap at the museum after giving a talk on - what else? - UFOs.
He said: "One of the museum staff tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was aware that 'bits of a flying saucer' had been kept in a cigarette tin in the museum group store for decades.

"I was absolutely amazed when later we opened the tin box and saw the wreckage. It was obvious these were the remains of the missing Silpho Saucer that some have claimed as Britain's answer to the famous Roswell incident.
"It's incredible to hear that pieces of this mystery object have been sitting in a museum archive for more than half a century."
But before we get too excited; years back, the remnants were sent off for testing by the National History Museum and Manchester University and it was discovered that the whole thing was an elaborate hoax.

Dr Clarke said: "It was tinkered with and sliced into tiny pieces to be examined by various people."
It's believed the fake spaceship was made from a hot water cylinder and had been planted on the moor to trick people.
Then again, these so-called tests could all be part of a massive government cover-up, couldn't they? I mean, why were the remains hidden in a ciggie box all these years, eh? The truth is out there, guys.

UFO hunters are convinced that they have spotted an alien spaceship taking off at Yellowstone National Park after witnessing a bright, pulsating light which was caught on a webcam live stream.
A video uploaded to conspiracy YouTube channel The Hidden Underbelly shows what appears to be a bright light lifting from the ground in the hills in the background.
The light then moves towards the camera slowly, before veering off to the left of the screen.
Viewers of the video were convinced that the bright light is definitely a UFO, and believe that the authorities have some answering to do.
Somme Bomb posted: “Would love to see them explain that one. You can see clearly the light interferes with the clouds and you can see the reflection in the river.”
Twilights daughter added: “They must have been checking out the geysers and scenery just like the humans were.”
Yellowstone has also piqued the interest of many around the globe over fears that it could soon erupt.
The Yellowstone Caldera supervolcano last erupted 70,000 years ago but a spike in seismic activity around the national park has unsettled nerves.

If the Wyoming volcano were to erupt it would kill an estimated 87,000 people immediately and make two-thirds of the USA immediately uninhabitable.
The large spew of ash into the atmosphere would block out sunlight and directly affect life beneath it creating a “nuclear winter”.

The massive eruption could be a staggering 6,000 times as powerful as the one from Washington’s Mount St Helens in 1980 which killed 57 people and deposited ash in 11 different states and five Canadian provinces.
If the volcano explodes, a climate shift would ensue as the volcano would spew massive amounts of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, which can form a sulphur aerosol that reflects and absorbs sunlight.
Wreckage missing from a mini UFO - which was labelled the ‘British Roswell’ - has been found in a tin box at a London museum.
A mysterious metal disc found on Silpho Moor in a remote part of Yorkshire in 1957 was nicknamed the ‘Silpho UFO’, reports the UK Telegraph.
Newspapers in northern England at the time reported a small “copper-bottomed flying saucer” being found.
The remaining parts of the Silpho UFO, found in 1957, were rumoured by the UFO community to have ended up on a scrap heap or even on display in a local fish and chip shop.

The 40cms-wide lump of metal inscribed with hieroglyphics was similar to the wreckage of the famous UFO found at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947.

After the mystery object was cut open, a book made of 17 thin copper sheets covered in more hieroglyphics was discovered inside.
But when the wreckage was examined by experts from the Natural History Museum in London, it was dismissed as a hoax.
They found no evidence it had any heat damage from entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
The remains then apparently disappeared, prompting conspiracy theories it had been deliberately destroyed by the British government.

But now it has emerged the object was sent to London’s Science Museum in 1963 and was stored in a cigarette tin.
It came to light when journalism lecturer Dr David Clarke was giving a recent talk at the Science Museum.
"One of the museum staff tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was aware that ‘bits of a flying saucer’ had been kept in a cigarette tin in the museum group store for decades," he said.
The North Yorkshire Moors National Park, close to Silpho.
"I was absolutely amazed when later we opened the tin box and saw the wreckage.
“It was obvious these were the remains of the missing Silpho Saucer that some have claimed as Britain's answer to the famous Roswell incident.”
