Weird Norfolk: Abiding mystery of the county’s 1954 UFO sightings

It was the year J RR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings was published, Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile, Winston Churchill was Prime Minister and rationing came to an end. And 1954 was also the year that a series of Unidentified Flying Objects were seen in the skies above Norfolk, just a year after the term ‘UFO’ had been coined by the United States Air Force.

The first major sightings came in the first week of March, as winter’s grip remained in the east with uncommonly low temperatures and snow flurries holding back the onset of spring and sending most people indoors to stay warm by the fire.

But on Alexandra Road in Norwich on March 1 at around 6.15pm, it wasn’t snow that led Mr and Mrs Goreham to look up to the skies: the couple had spotted a “very bright round ball” which moved across the sky, spinning and then forming into the shape of a triangle.

“It had a bright ray of light round the whole of it. It disappeared three times while we were watching it.”

At nearby Lawson Road, Mr and Mrs Cubitt watched a round object in the sky “like a child’s humming top with a white or light-coloured band and blue to green top... it seemed as if the top of the ball was opening like a domed lid.” Both couples sketched what they had seen. Edith Capes of Paston saw a similar craft at 7pm - her description was almost identical: the object looked like a top, coloured blue and green and with a band of light round the middle. Letters to the EDP on the subject led to two further reports, a sighting on March 4 in Lowestoft and another on March 8 in Norwich.

After one sighting in Aylsham in June of a large cigar-shaped craft which roared and was “flaming red” at one end, the reports dried up. Until September.There were six witnesses in Overstrand, North Elmham, Trunch and Norwich who all reported seeing something strange in the sky between September 15 and 21.Mr Rayner of North Elmham reported seeing “flying shapes, one resembling a cigar, the other a saucer. The round thing was as big as a Canberra bomber, the other was like a double-sized Flying Fortress fuselage”.

A day later, a similar object was seen in Overstrand, four days after that there were two sightings, one in Overstrand and one in Trunch.

On September 21, 12-year-old Jasmine Morton reported seeing a green, egg-shaped object moving across Earlham Park. It was the last reported sighting until October 2, when in Costessey, a blue-white square craft was seen, silently revolving with several large and small lights.

There were then four sightings on October 21 from Blakeney to North Birmingham, Smallburgh and Rocklands when a UFO was spotted travelling at “tremendous speed” across the night sky.

In North Burlingham, Keith Watts was cycling towards Norwich when he spotted something unusual: “...a vivid object streaked across the sky, leaving in its rear a brilliant glow for a brief moment.” The object sped towards Great Yarmouth.

At around the same time in Smallburgh, David Coley saw an object travelling at speed which looked like a comet with its “glowing trail”.

Ten minutes later, in Rocklands, Ronald Lincoln saw a bright ball of light apparently drop 600 feet like a stone before stopping and speeding off.

The very last reported sighting came at the end of November in Norwich - as darkness fell at 4pm, an anonymous witness saw something unexplained: “I got my boy’s field glasses and continued watching it from upstairs. It was moving very slowly away towards the south - it was sausage-shaped and aluminium in colour.”

Did the witnesses see top secret military aircraft being tested over the skies of the county? Or did they catch sight of extraterrestrial visitors taking a closer look at the east of England?

Britain’s Area 51 EXPOSED? Group chased by ‘men in black’ after entering UFO centre

FOOTAGE has emerged of the moment a group of blokes were confronted by authorities after entering a site known as Britain’s Area 51.

RAF Rudloe Manor in Bath gained its nickname after secret files were released at the National Archives indicating the site was the centre for UFO investigations in the 1950s.

It shows the four blokes sneaking around the buildings and capturing various bizarre footage. 

But they suddenly become spooked as they hear people approaching them.

Sirens then begin to ring out in the background as the four men rush to get in their car. 

And as they drive off, one of the men suggest they are being followed by government officials.

One of them states: “We are currently being tailed by an unmarked police car, they’ve been following us for 15 minutes.”

Before someone else in the car suggests: “It's men in black.”

Their car is finally pulled over, for what they are told is a routine check, after a vehicle with the same registration had been spotted in London. 

The video was uploaded to YouTube on May 2 and has already racked up more than 100,000 hits.

This Mind-Boggling Illusion Will Hurt Your Brain

I’ve seen a fair share of incredible illusions while surfing the internet, but for a long time have I not seen a mind-boggling illusion like this one.

A Mathematician has created a refreshing optical illusion that will surely hurt your brain.

Professor Kokichi Sugihara is a Mathematician and doctor of engineering at Meiji University in Tokyo, and his ‘arrow’ illusion has left the internet baffled.

He essentially created an arrow that seems to always point to the right.

No matter how you rotate the arrow, it always turns right. Right?

The trick of the eye is one of the many illusions carefully crafted by professor Sugihara.

The arrow which was rigidly mounted on a wooden stand was built with great care to feature this brain-hurting event.

However, this duplicity (always right) can only be seen when observing the ‘arrow’ from above.

Professor Sugihara is famous for crafting mind-bending optical illusions that appear to question the very foundations of physics.

But with careful observations and a bit of time, the secrets are unfolded.

Professor Sugihara took the internet by storm after it was posted on the Instagram page Physicsfun, where it had been viewed nearly 400,000 times at the time of publication.

The post was accompanied by a brief description where the author explains:

“Spin this arrow 180 degrees and it still points to the right – only in a mirror will it point left, and only to the left. A clever combination of reflection, perspective, and viewing angle produce this striking illusion.”

The post on Phyiscsfun’s Instagram page reveals the secret of the illusion. The arrow is shown tilted up which allows the viewer to appreciate its true shape: an oblong with two pointed ends, featuring a number of upward and downward gradients.

And precisely this awkward symmetrical layout is what plays around with your mind. These features are also characteristic of Professor Sugihara’s work.

When you observe the ‘arrow’ from above, the object seems perfectly symmetrical. However, from a different perspective, like the first video of the arrow, the undulations visible from above make the arrow appear as if it was always pointing in the same direction: right.

LUX: THE PARASITIC ALIEN PRESENT ON OUR PLANET

Lux: The parasitic alien present on our planet

According to several researchers, the Lux also known as The Being of Light is an otherworldly being present on our earth that does not need a physical body to enter and move in our world. This being, baptized with the name of Lux, has a small form, made of light.

As ancient scriptures teach us, human beings are made up of 4 elements: body, mind, spirit and soul. In our case, the body acts as a container for the other three elements. But the Lux is formed only by two elements: mind and spirit.

Lux: The parasitic alien present on our planet

Lux is a metamorphic plasma being that parasites about 80% of the population of our planet. The Lux comes from nebulous areas of our Galaxy (impossible for us to determine location) where they find the necessary elements (matter and antimatter) whose interaction is able to generate intelligent life forms without a physical body.

THE EXISTENCE AND THE BIRTH OF THE LUX

To explain the existence of Lux , we must take a step back and understand some of the dynamics of our Universe, still in many ways, completely unknown. Around the 60s of the twentieth century the Nobel Prize in physics in 1970 Hannes Alfven theorized the cosmology of plasma. An expert in the field of magnetodynamics, Alfven argued that magnetic fields had and played a fundamental role in the composition of cosmic structures.

It was he who proved that the Milky Way had a magnetic field that was not the mere sum of the stellar ones and hypothesized that such a galactic magnetic field was due to interstellar plasma motions. The Nobel Prize winner hypothesized that intergalactic plasma also has, with its motions, the ability to generate strong magnetic fields able to overlap with the action of gravity. He also thought that there were huge clashes between matter and antimatter, giving rise to multitudes of mini Big Bang. The common theories on the Universe are based on weak forces (magnetic force + gravitational force) and on the electrical neutrality of matter in terrestrial laboratories, but which can not be applied in the space in which the “Plasma” dominates, ie the 4th state of the matter, where the other 3 are gaseous, liquid and solid.

So this means that the Plasma has as main property that of transporting the electric current, forming “filaments” of energy that follow the lines of the magnetic fields, in fact in the cosmos these filaments are everywhere present. Summing up: in physics and chemistry, a Plasma is an ionized gas, consisting of a set of electrons and ions, globally neutral, but being made up of charged particles, the overall motions of the Plasma particles are largely due to the long range that come to create, and that tend to keep the plasma neutral. As such, Plasma is considered as the fourth state of matter, which is distinguished from solid, liquid and gas. The free electrical charges mean that Plasma is a good conductor of electricity, and that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields.

From a higher perspective, this Alien corresponds to an attempt at the last minute of the Black Demiurge to create an alternative life base with the ability to operate with one’s own will and independence in our Universe. As if it were a cancer, the Lux is consumed in an unstoppable way to exhaust all the available energy at hand. These operations of true energetic drainage are obtained by means of different modes and formulas of parasite or interference, both on the human body and on the extraterrestrial animal and body.

THE LUX AND THE MAN

Once you realize that the matter that generates them has a limit and is unable to keep them alive forever, since once they were exhausted they would also end up existing, they went in search of other sources of alternative energy.

By dividing one’s being from a giant Lux-Mother to smaller, much more numerous and able to take on the most varied forms, they have spread everywhere, in search of worlds in which to absorb as much energy as possible, becoming at the same time same a metastasis. First they began their work of “vampirism” on animal and plant forms present in many planets scattered in the galaxy, then just met intelligence and other sentient forms like them, they gave life to a real parasitic, both subtle and consenting, with the host body.

In this long wandering, as far as the Lux of our galaxy is concerned, millions of years ago they came into contact with the Sauroidi race, which had long since settled among the planets of the stars of the Orion belt.

At first this vampirism began in a subtle and silent way, then when the Sauroidi evolved so much that they arrived to discover their presence, an exchange of information began, up to mutual mutual aid. The Sauroids needed to acquire more knowledge of the created and of the Universe, feeding their voracity of conquest thanks to a greater knowledge, while the Lux found in it an impressive force and a container to live and in which it would be able to draw a lot of energy, albeit for a limited time (here is born the myth of the “Fruit of Knowledge” of which the Serpents are the carriers and who will then also donate to the current Man, or the “knowledge of the Lux”). Writing what happened next would be too long and complicated and I will do it elsewhere,

Found Man on a wonderful planet, Eden or the Earth, (the First Man or the Giants of whom I speak in the Archeogenesis) but realizing that it was not possible to subject him to their will, they decided in common accord with other alien races that in the meantime had joined the project, to create a smaller container, able to contain that energy and then exploit it. Here the current human being appears on the scene, a synthesis of a genetic operation that saw the unification of the alien genome, with that of the First Man and the monkeys. 

All this part is deepened in several parallel studies and analogous to this, but from this reconstruction it is possible to draw many food for thought. The Sauroidi, which in the mythology are the Snakes, grant to man in the Garden of Eden, the “Fruit of Knowledge”, in reality this fruit is what they have been carrying within for a long time, the “knowledge of the Lux”, this entity of light generated by the same matter of which the stars, the Universe and the creators are formed. But Lux in reality, was not and is not only an entity of Light able to know in depth the secrets of the cosmos, but also an intelligent entity that, aware of its mortality, is able to make any gesture and stratagem to survive. and because his very existence is not lost.

For millions of years, Lux has kept the entire humanity subjugated to its will, creating a false mysticism which, acting on the partly animal and suggestible side of man, has been able to direct it towards a certain objective.

He made it possible to spread and multiply the men on the planet, contributing to the development of the various races, then from them were born the countless cultures, the first peoples, the first kingdoms, the first nations, the empires, but above all the religions. On religion he has conducted an intense and systematic work, because by acting on the human psyche, inclined to mysticism, he was able to manipulate the mass of Humans that slowly increased over the millennia; passing his “Fruit of Knowledge” as a divine gift of which Man had become the only universal bearer.

For this reason the parasitic modes of the Lux are ambivalent, they put in doubt, they keep in a continuous state of doubling the man who hosts him, gratifies him and at the same time submerges him with the sense of guilt, because it is the internal divine voice that speaks to you and makes you understand what is right or wrong. His being a vampire is all-encompassing, because the more he leads man in a millennial game of manipulation, the more he feeds on his experiences and his inexhaustible energy source. It continually draws energy from Humans alone endowed with Mind and Spirit, creating contrasts, misunderstandings and wars, and withdraws energy from Humans endowed with Soul, because they are the creatives and those who possess the true divine spark.

A CURIOSITY:

As written at the beginning of the reconstruction, Plasma on Earth, unlike in the cosmos, is very rare, so when the Lux came to Earth at the beginning it was able to move only through approaching and physical contact with others individuals (typical of passages from demonic possession), currently, however, thanks to human technological development, is able to move on the entire globe thanks to electricity and enter our homes with extreme speed and ease, even by a grip of the light or a light bulb.

Ancient Manuscripts Contain Evidence of Planet Nine Claim Scientists

By analyzing ancient manuscripts and data gathered by Anglo-Saxon Astronomers, in combination with modern data by NASA and other space agencies, experts from Queen’s University hope to narrow down the location of elusive Planet Nine.

In the distant past, ancient astronomers spotted countless things in the night sky.

For example, thousands of years ago, the ancient Egyptians discovered a star located 92 light years away.

We have reported in earlier articles how a study by scientists from the University of Helsinki analyzed an ancient Egyptian papyrus and found it is the oldest preserved historical text of naked-eye observations of a variable star located 92 light years away, the eclipsing binary star Algol.

Now, scientists at Queen’s University in Belfast believe how trails of dust and gas in the night sky, spotted by Anglo-Saxon astronomers may provide evidence of the mysterious Planet Nine.

In 2016, astronomers from Caltech published a study reporting the existence of an undiscovered planet, located in the outermost reaches of our solar system.

It is estimated that Planet Nine has ten times the mass and two to four times the diameter of the Earth.

According to Caltech astronomers, Planet Nine has a massive orbit, meaning that it takes between 10,000 and 20,000 years to make a single pass around the sun.

But even before 2016 have astronomers debated whether such a rogue planet may exist at the edge of our solar system.

But despite searching for the elusive world, astronomers on Earth have still not managed to find it.

According to news reports of January 2016, astronomer Michael Brown suggests there is a ninety percent probability that such a planet really exists. Astronomers say that the existence of such an alien world would explain the strange way distant objects in space move.

This is the Bayeux Tapestry and it features a depiction of the 1066 Halley’s Comet. Now, experts from Queen’s University Belfast say that trails of dust and gas in the night sky recorded by ancient Anglo-Saxon astronomers may contain evidence of the elusive Planet Nine.

And since planet nine has eluded discovery, scientists from Queen’s University believe how ancient depictions of comets in the Dark Ages may provide crucial data on the whereabouts of the mysterious alien world.

Experts believe how ancient Anglo-Saxon accounts, together with modern scientific methods could be used to investigate the effects of such a world and spot it in the sky.

According to medieval historians and astronomers from Queens University, we may learn about the enigmatic planet by exploring the Anglo-Saxon understanding of the cosmos.

Experts combine record of comets spotted by Anglo-Saxon astronomers, as well as contemporary images of space objects, including data obtained from NASA and The Northern Ireland Amateur Astronomy Society.

By combining modern data with ancient accounts, researchers believe they could narrow down the location of planet nine.

“This research project renegotiates the meaning and importance of medieval science and demonstrates how medieval records of comets can help test the theory of the existence of the elusive ‘Planet Nine’.”

11 UNUSUAL CAVES AROUND THE WORLD

A cave or cavern is a natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Caves form naturally by the weathering of rock and they often extend deep underground. Because of their uniqueness and beauty, some caves have become very interesting places for tourists and photographers worldwide. 

1. Sea Cave in Algarve, Portugal

This cave in the glacier ice is the result of glacial mill, or Moulin where rain and melt water on the glacier surface are channeled into streams that enter the glacier at crevices. The waterfall melts a hole into the glacier while the ponded water drains towards lower elevations by forming long ice caves with an outlet at the terminus of the glacier.

The fine grained sediments in the water along with wind blown sediments cause the frozen meltwater stream to appear in a muddy colour while the top of the cave exhibits the deep blue colour. Due to the fast movement of the glacier of about 1 m (3 ft) per day over uneven terrain, this ice cave cracked up at its end into a deep vertical crevice, called cerrac. This causes the indirect daylight to enter the ice cave from both ends resulting in homogeneous lighting of the ice tunnel.

The cave is accessible through a 22-foot (7 m) entrance on the shoreline. At the end it tapers to a tight squeeze no more than four feet high (1,2 m). Ice caves are in general unstable things and can collapse at any time. They are safe to enter only in winter when the cold temperatures harden the ice. Even so one could hear constant cracking sounds inside the cave. It was not because it was going to collapse but because the cave was moving along with the glacier itself. Each time the glacier moved a millimeter loud sounds could be heard. [link, map]

3. Devetashka Cave, Bulgaria

link Devetashka cave is one of the biggest caves in Bulgaria but it is most famous for its amazing history. It is also currently home to nearly 30,000 bats.  The man on the floor of the Devetashka cave  link  Devetashka cave is located 18 km (11mi)  northeast of Lovech and 2 kilometers (1.2mi) away from the village of Devetaki. The cave is also known as Maarata or Oknata for its seven different-sized holes in the ceiling, through which sunlight penetrates and illuminates the central hall and part of its two fields.  Old building inside of entrance area  link  The entrance of the cave is 35 meters (115ft) wide and 30 meters (100ft) high. About 40 meters (130ft) after the entrance, the cave widens, forming a spacious hall with an area of 2,400 sqm (0.6 acres). 4. Glow Worm Caves, New Zealand

link Waitomo, New Zealand is famous for one thing. Every year, heaps upon heaps of travelers come here to see the infamous glow worms that line the ceilings of the nearby caves. The glow worms emit a phosphorescent glow that shines from the roofs of the caves like a starry night.

link The interesting thing about the glow worms is that they aren’t really glow worms. They’re fly larvae. And what glows? Well, that’s their waste and snot. The larva glow to attract prey into its threads by making the prey believe they are outdoors as the roof of a cave looks much like a starry night. Hungry larva glow brighter than ones that have just eaten. There are a couple of ways to see the glow worms. There’s the three hour black water tubing trip, the five hour trip that includes abseiling and climbing, or, if you like it easy, a boat. [link, map]

5. Cueva de Arpea, Spain

link Cueva de Arpea is located below the twisted rock layers in Aezkoa valley in northern Spain. That area is home to some truly amazing caves.

6. Minnehaha Falls Cave, USA 

Near where the Minnehaha Creek meets the Mississippi River, a 53 ft (16m) waterfall that freezes during the winter creates a temporary cave behind a wall of ice. Due to the extremely cold temperatures in the area during the winter months, the falls freeze, creating a dramatic cascade of ice that can last well into the spring.

Minnehaha Creek is located in Hennepin County, Minnesota that extends from Lake Minnetonka in the west and flows east for 22 miles through several suburbs west of Minneapolis and then through south Minneapolis. Including Lake Minnetonka, the watershed for the creek covers 181 square miles.

The creek might have been unremarkable except for the 53 foot (16m) Minnehaha Falls located near the creek’s confluence with the Mississippi. The site is not far from Fort Snelling, one of the earliest white settlements in the region. [link, map]

7. Fingal’s Cave, UK

Fingal’s Cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, part of a National Nature Reserve owned by the National Trust for Scotland. It is formed entirely from hexagonally jointed basalt columns.

Its size and naturally arched roof, and the eerie sounds produced by the echoes of waves, give it the atmosphere of a natural cathedral. The cave’s Gaelic name, An Uaimh Bhinn, means “the melodious cave“.

The cave has a large arched entrance and is filled by the sea. Several local companies include a pass by the cave in sightseeing cruises from April to September. However, it is also possible to land elsewhere on the island and walk to the cave overland, where a row of fractured columns forms a walkway just above high-water level permitting exploration on foot. 8. Giant Crystal Cave, Mexico

Cave of the Crystals or Giant Crystal Cave is a cave connected to the Naica Mine 300 metres (980 ft) below the surface in Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico. The main chamber contains giantselenite crystals (gypsum, CaSO4·2 H2O), some of the largest natural crystals ever found.

The cave’s largest crystal found to date is 12 m (39 ft) in length, 4 m (13 ft) in diameter and 55 tons in weight. The cave is extremely hot with air temperatures reaching up to 58 °C (136 °F) with 90 to 99 percent humidity. The cave is relatively unexplored due to these factors. Without proper protection people can only endure approximately ten minutes of exposure at a time.

9. Cenote Ik Kil, Mexico

Ik Kil is a well known cave with no roof, or a sinkhole outside Pisté in the Municipality of Tinúm, Yucatán, Mexico, It is located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula and is part of the Ik Kil Archeological Park near Chichen Itza. It is open to the public for swimming and is often included in bus tours.

This cave is open to the sky with the water level about 26 metres (85 ft) below ground level. There is a carved stairway down to a swimming platform. Ik Kil is about 60 metres (200 ft) in diameter and about 40 metres (130 ft) deep. There are vines which reach from the opening all the way down to the water along with small waterfalls. Mato Grosso do Sul region in Brazil (and especially the quiet town of Bonito) boasts many marvelous underground lakes: Gruta do Lago Azul, Gruta do Mimoso, Aquário Natural. The world famous “Gruta do Lago Azul” (Blue Lake Cave) is a natural monument whose interior is formed by stalactites, stalagmites and a huge and wonderful blue lake.

In Patagonia, South America, General Carrera Lake is shared by Argentina and Chile. But on the Chilean side of the beautiful emerald-green to turquoise-blue waters, there are breathtakingly beautiful marble caves carved into passageways and caverns.

These amazing marble formations were sculpted by erosion into three main marble formations: La Capilla (the Chapel), El Catedral (the Cathedral), and La Cueva (the Cave).

We Now Have A Working Nuclear Reactor for Other Planets — But No Plan For Its Waste

If the power goes out in your home, you can usually settle in with some candles, a flashlight, and a good book. You wait it out, because the lights will probably be back on soon.

But if you’re on Mars, your electricity isn’t just keeping the lights on — it’s literally keeping you alive. In that case, a power outage becomes a much bigger problem.

NASA scientists think they’ve found a way to avoid that possibility altogether: creating a nuclear reactor. This nuclear reactor, known as Kilopower, is about the size of a refrigerator and can be safely launched into space alongside any celestial voyagers; astronauts can start it up either while they’re still in space, or after landing on an extraterrestrial body.

The Kilopower prototype just aced a series of major tests in Nevada that simulated an actual mission, including failures that could have compromised its safety (but didn’t).

This nuclear reactor would be a “game changer” for explorers on Mars, Lee Mason, NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) principal technologist for Power and Energy Storage, said in a November 2017 NASA press release. Just one device could provide enough power to support an extraterrestrial outpost for 10 years, and do so without some of the issues inherent to solar power, namely: being interrupted at night or blocked for weeks or months during Mars’ epic dust storms.

“It solves those issues and provides a constant supply of power regardless of where you are located on Mars,” Mason said in the press release. He also noted that a nuclear-powered habitat could mean that humans could land in a greater number of landing sites on Mars, including high latitudes where there’s not much light but potentially lots of ice for astronauts to use.

Nuclear reactors are not an unusual feature in space; the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft, now whizzing through deep space after departing our solar system, have been running on nuclear energy since they launched in the 1970s. The same is true for the Mars rover Curiosity since it landed on the Red Planet in 2012.

But we’d need a lot more reactors to colonize planets. And that could pose a problem of what to do with the waste.

According to Popular Mechanics, Kilopower reactors create electricity through active nuclear fission — in which atoms are cleaved apart to release energy. You need solid uranium-235 to do it, which is housed in a reactor core about the size of a roll of paper towels. Eventually, that uranium-235 is going to be “spent,” just like fuel rods in Earth-based reactors, and put nearby humans at risk.

When that happens, the uranium core will have to be stored somewhere safe; spent reactor fuel is still dangerously radioactive, and releases lots of heat. On Earth, most spent fuel rods stored in pools of water that keep the rods cool, preventing them from catching fire and blocking radiating radioactivity. But on another planet, we’d need any available water to, you know, keep humans alive.

So we’d need another way to cool spent radioactive fuel. It’s possible that the spent fuel could be stored in shielded casks in lava tubes or designated parts of the surface, since the Moon and Mars are so cold, though that introduces the risk that someone might accidentally bump into them.

Right now, all we can do is speculate — as far as we know, NASA doesn’t have any publicly available plan for what to do with spent nuclear fuel on extraterrestrial missions. That could be because the Kilopower prototype just proved itself actually feasible. But not knowing what to do with the waste from it seems like an unusual oversight, since NASA is planning to go back to the Moon, and then to Mars, by the early 2030s.

And in case you were wondering, no, you can’t just shoot the nuclear waste off into deep space or into the sun; NASA studied that way back in the 1970s and determined it was a pretty terrible idea. Back to the drawing board.

Aliens on ‘Super-Earths’ Might be Trapped on Those Worlds Forever

Of the 3,700-plus planets astronomers have discovered outside our solar system,about 53 have been deemed potentially habitable—they’re made of solid rock and reside in a part of their host star’s orbit that is not too hot nor too cold to allow liquid water to exist. This is encouraging news in our search for extraterrestrial life: The more planets we find and identify in the near-infinite expanse of space, and the more we’re able to determine which of them could be amenable to life of some kind, the more likely we’re able to find at least one of them that is home to alien life—hopefully of similar intelligence to human beings. But if a super-Earth is home to aliens of some kind, we might not ever get a chance to meet them.

Of those 53 planets and counting, about 30 are known as “super-Earths”—bigger than your run-of-the-mill pale blue dot, but still small enough to perhaps sustain life of some kind. Super-Earths generally refer to any rocky planet that’s up to 10 times more massive than Earth. A lot of scientists think they might actually be better targets to study for aliens than smaller planets, since they are more likely to possess a robust atmosphere capable of keeping life warm and cozy and safe from cosmic rays.

But a super-Earth don’t necessarily mean super easy contact with such a civilization; they might act more like a gravitational prison for intelligent life that evolves on such a planet. 

In a new paper, Michael Hippke, a researcher who’s worked with the Sonneberg Observatory in Germany, points out that in order to escape the gravitational force of a super-Earth that’s, say, 10 times the mass of our own Earth, a rocket might need something like 440,000 tons of mass, most of it in fuel requirements. It would need to be 70 percent wider and 10 times bigger itself. For context, that’s about the mass of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It’s an incredibly hefty order—perhaps prohibitively so.

“Originally, the paper was an April Fool’s joke paper,” Hippke tells Observer. “After several colleagues noted that the result is important, I decided to follow-up with a regular paper.”

Rocket science is as complex as well, rocket science. It takes a lot of power for something to overcome the gravity of a planet or moon and make its way into space. This “exponentially terrible influence,” as Hippke calls it, inspired him to start thinking about what spaceflight engineers would have to construct if Earth was more massive. “And, of course, there are many such more massive planets out there, called super-Earths.”

Hippke was unable to find previous literature that attempted to answer that question, so he took it on himself to outline the problem and find hypothetical solutions. He then determined that the “super-Earthlings” might be better off bypassing chemical rocket propulsion entirely, and instead build a space elevator, which is exactly what it sounds like. An elevator moving up hundreds of miles into the sky could be an easy way to negate the fuel requirements of lifting a rocket into space, which is why humans are also considering such concepts. Hopefully aliens on a super-Earth have a better choice in elevator music than our species does.

Of course, as Hippke points out, building something like this would require materials with sufficient tensile strength, and that’s far from guaranteed. Carbon nanotubes could be an option. But even so, a space elevator, which is barely possible for a planet like Earth, would be even more difficult to build and operate on another planet.

Hippke also notes another species could try to launch things into space using microwaves or lasers. Of course, this is also far from feasible. The farthest we’ve ever pushed something into the air using microwaves is just 70 meters. And lasers are an entirely different story too—while they might work in pushing something into space, they might also basically incinerate the whole spacecraft (a big point of concern for projects that are seeking to use lasers to launch probes into space). All of this ignores the massive energy requirements needed to operate such tools.

The most feasible option for super-Earth aliens to get off their planet might be nuclear propulsion—setting off an atomic bomb in order to generate enough force for a spacecraft to hurtle out into space. For those leaving the super-Earth, that’s probably an acceptable plan (assuming they aren’t consumed by the explosion). But for everyone else still on the planet, that’s probably unacceptable.

So we might have to accept that an alien species, even if they’re super-geniuses, might be planet locked on a super-Earth. If they exist, these “arrested” civilizations aren’t going anywhere.

But that doesn’t mean we would never be able to find them or make contact with them. If an arrested civilization was looking to broadcast their existence, they wouldn’t launch probes into space, but they’d probably shoot laser or radio signals into space, in hopes someone else has their eyes and ears peering out. SETI scientists already do this, so it might simply be a matter of focusing our instruments on super-Earths more intensely if we have reason to be believe E.T. is really trying to phone us.

Scientists have a serious love affair with Mars. If (hopefully “when”) mankind sets foot on another planet, Mars is almost certainly going to be the one, and it’s so much like Earth in terms of composition that there’s still a chance that we might find evidence of extraterrestrial life there. No, I’m not talking about a race of Martian “Warrior Women,” but fossils that reveal microbs or other primitive life forms that may have once inhabited the lakes and rivers we believe covered the planet millions of years ago.

We already have rovers taking samples of Martian soil and studying the makeup of the Martian landscape, but we haven’t found anything to suggest the presence (either current or in the past) of life. Monica Grady, Professor of Planetary and Space Sciences at The Open University, says that if we really want to see whether or not Mars once supported some form of life, we’re going to need to be able to study Mars samples here on Earth.

Effectively studying Martian rock samples requires some pretty sophisticated hardware. The newest Mars rovers and landers from NASA and the European Space Agency are incredibly high-tech, but they simply aren’t capable of performing the kind of analysis that is needed to provide evidence of life. For that, we need to bring rocks back to Earth, and we have to do so in a way that doesn’t risk contaminating either planet.

“The technology that would help us to avoid contaminating Mars with Earth microbes and vice versa (if there turns out to be life there) – “breaking the chain of contact”, where a capsule launched from Mars’ surface with a sample could not return to Earth, as it would risk contaminating our biosphere – is also well developed now,” Grady says. But how exactly do we make it all happen?

NASA’s Mars 2020 rover and the ExoMars rover built by ESA are both capable of preparing samples for return to Earth, but that’s only the first step in a very complicated process. The two agencies are already working out the details, but it’s hardly a walk in the park. Completing the handoff would require a Mars Ascent Vehicle to take off from the Red Planet and successfully enter orbit. Meanwhile, a separate vehicle would have to meet up with the orbiter and take possession of the samples before venturing back towards Earth. None of his has ever even been attempted before.

Complicating matters further is the current budget woes of NASA. The agency doesn’t have a lot of money to play around with these days, and even by leaning on commercial launch companies to help cut costs, organizing multiple launches for the purpose of returning Mars samples to Earth will be incredibly expensive. Thankfully, NASA and ESA have pledged to tackle the challenge together, so hopefully the pursuit of science won’t be held up by an empty wallet.

Astronomers Closer to Solving the Mystery of Fast Radio Bursts

Scientists have received mysterious signals from space for the last decade. Are these perplexing signals really E.T. phoning home? Or a scrambled message from a galaxy far, far away? Dubbed “fast radio bursts,” the origin of this phenomenon has remained a mystery — until now.

What Are Fast Radio Bursts?

The latest astronomy research has found the origin of a fast radio burst in a dwarf galaxy some 3 billion light-years away, according to Astronomy. The source of the radio waves, once thought to be extraterrestrial contact, was hard to pin down because the signals only lasted for a fraction of a second.

Since FRBs were first discovered in 2007, astronomers have struggled to understand the science behind the phenomenon. Are FRBs a sign of alien life? Residual signals from a long-ago civilization traversing the vast blackness of space? Or perhaps signs of catastrophic cosmological upheaval?

Finding Clues to Distant Mysteries

The mystery began to unravel when an international group of researchers discovered FRB 121102. Unlike any of the previously discovered FRBs, this radio wave periodically repeated, which allowed scientists to home in on the source, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Thingiverse details how to print a 3-D copy of the radio burst that visually depicts the peaks and dips of the transmission.

In 2012, Arecibo Observatory’s radio telescope was the first to take note of FRB 121102. Then, using the Very Large Array — 27 movable radio dish antennas located in New Mexico — researchers captured a series of nine radio bursts over the next six months. The 8.19-meter Gemini North Telescope, located in Hawaii, confirmed the source of the radio bursts was a dwarf galaxy 3 billion light-years away, Popular Mechanics reported.

Researchers presented their findings in Nature and at the 231st meeting of the American Astronomical Society, delivering an unprecedented level of detail on the elusive FRB, captured at the Arecibo Observatory.

The current theory is that the source of FRB 121102 is a young neutron star — the leftover of a giant star that exploded in a supernova. The neutron star could be engulfed in gas and debris from the supernova. Other dwarf galaxies similar to FRB 121102’s have been found to be home to violent astronomical events, such as “‘superluminous supernovae and long gamma-ray bursts,'” according to interviews with the research team published in Popular Mechanics. The FRB’s don’t appear to be pulsars, or rotating neutron stars that emit radio waves on a predictable interval.

Searching for More Answers

Future research will build on the fact that nearly all of the light from FRB 121102 is polarized (or oriented in the same direction), unlike most other objects that emit unpolarized light in random directions. Emitting polarized light requires the presence of a strong magnetic field, such those given off by massive black holes. Another source could be a magnetar, a type of neutron star formed when a large star consumes all its fuel and collapses in on itself, according to Space.com.

Is it safe to rule out extraterrestrial contact? At this point, it is unclear if FRB 121102 is unique, or if there are other repeating radio sources to be discovered. Astronomy reports that 10,000 FRBs occur every day, so we may have an answer soon.

While astronomers keep looking but have not yet found the rumored Planet 9, and doomsayers still use NASA’s interest in it as proof that their cataclysmic Planet X or Nibiru also exists, two researchers in Ireland think the proof is not in space but on a wall. Wait, what?

The “wall” is in the Ulster Museum where, from May 2 through June 3, the Bayeux Tapestry is on display. This is the first time the Dark Ages tapestry has been outside of France in 950 years. According to various legends, it was either commissioned by Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, or more likely by William’s half-brother, Bishop Odo, sometime in the 1070s. The embroidered tapestry measures 70 meter (230 ft) by 50 centimeters (20 in) and tells the story of the Norman conquest of England from the Norman point of view.

The cloth gets its name from the Bayeux Cathedral in Normandy where a 1476 inventory is the first historical reference to it. The size of the tapestry alone is significant, considering when it was made. The fact that it has survived in such good shape through all subsequent conquests, wars, sackings and moves is even more impressive. (A recent example: the Gestapo moved it to the Louvre during World War II and Heimlich Himmler was planning to later move it to Berlin.) However, that’s not what interested Marilina Cesario, a University of Ulster medievalist interested in astronomy, and Pedro Lacerda, a Queen’s University astronomer interested in the humanities. According to Space Daily, they were brought together by United Kingdom’s Leverhulme Trust which was funding projects that combine the arts and the sciences.

The end result of the meeting of Lacerdo and Cesario is “Marvelling at the skies: Comets Through the Eyes of the Anglo-Saxons,” the exhibit at the University of Belfast where the Bayeux Tapestry is joined by other examples of astronomical images made by Anglo-Saxons during the Dark Ages. The Bayex Tapestry earns its place in the exhibition due to its famous depiction of Halley’s Comet, the first known picture of the comet which visited in 1066 and was a good omen for William the Conqueror and a bad one for England’s Harold II, who died at the Battle of Hastings.

Marilina Cesario hopes the exhibit creates new interest in old astronomy.

“We have a wealth of historical records of comets in Old English, Old Irish, Latin and Russian which have been overlooked for a long time. Early medieval people were fascinated by the heavens, as much as we are today.”

What does the Bayeux Tapestry have to do with Planet 9, Dr. Lacerdo?

“We can take the orbits of comets currently known and use a computer to calculate the times when those comets would be visible in the skies during the Middle Ages. The precise times depend on whether our computer simulations include Planet Nine. So, in simple terms, we can use the medieval comet sightings to check which computer simulations work best: the ones that include Planet Nine or the ones that do not.”

In other words, they’re not looking for woven images of Planet 9 (although finding one would be nice) … they’re searching the tapestries for discrepancies in the timing of the comets’ appearances between the pictures and the models. Those differences may indicate they were affected by the existence of a giant rogue planet.

If Planet Nine data is fed into the model and it matches the Dark Ages tapestries, will 1066 be replaced in the annals of famous numbers by 9?

A new investigation of the Dead Sea Scrolls using NASA imaging technology found scrolls that contain some of the oldest “paleo-Hebrew” writing ever found in the collection of mysterious texts and point to the existence of a previously undiscovered scroll, something not found in the Qumran caves for 60 years. According to Haaretz, the writing found on the scroll was “invisible to the naked eye” and was therefore passed over during investigations before using patented NASA space-age technology. Besides pointing to a mysterious, undiscovered Dead Sea Scroll, the text contains evidence of a changing Psalm, and complaints about how the temple was being run.

The announcement was made this week by the Israel Antiquities Authority. The IAA says that by using “imaging technology invented by NASA,” they were able to decipher writing on the scrolls that had been invisible and unknown to even exist. They found fragments that did not seem to be a part of any of the other scrolls in the collection, leading researchers to conclude that an undiscovered Dead Sea Scroll exists, and it’s probably one of the very oldest written.

Undiscovered scrolls are probably inevitable. Last year, researchers discovered the 12th cave in Qumran, which appeared as if it would house an entire new set of scrolls. It turned out to have already been looted, and no scrolls were recovered. That’s a shame, because, although they have been deciphered and dated, we still don’t know exactly who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Any new scroll is hope for researchers that there may be answers to at least some of the many questions that still surround the mysterious Dead Sea Scrolls.

Part of the new discoveries is a third version of the Temple Scroll, which is a scroll describing either how the temple was run, or how it should be run. The new writing seems to differ slightly from the two other versions already found, mainly in that it was written in different handwriting. This leads researchers to believe that it may have been commentary on the state of temple business.

The newly deciphered writings also contain a part of the Psalm 147 that had previously been missing: the beginning of the first verse. It turns out that it was a word shorter than the version used today. While not exactly earth-shattering,  it’s strange how little that it’s changed since the 1st century CE.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a curious area of archaeology. On one hand, it’s an incredibly intriguing find, and one that, if completely deciphered, could provide some glimmers of answers to some of humanity’s oldest questions. On the other hand, the scrolls are so mysterious and inscrutable that they currently raise more questions than they answer. As time passes since the initial 1940 discovery, there is a real possibility that some of these questions may never be answered, and the scrolls will remain a mystery.

The answer to that question is “No!” The reason I bring the matter up is because it’s being discussed right now at Rich Reynolds’ blog. It’s important to note that the terms “M.I.B” and “Men in Black” were created years ago to describe those sinister characters who turn up at the homes of UFO witnesses and terrorize them into silence. Today, the fact is that – unlike in the early days of Ufology – those terms are far more flexible than they were decades ago. Yes, the Men in Black are still calling on people and intimidating them. But, while the black suit is still dominating, it’s certainly not alone. Even the MIB, it seems, need a change in style now and again.

Back in the 1960s, when they weren’t always wearing black suits and black fedoras, the MIB were dressing in military uniforms, which is a far cry from the image that most people have of these creepy figures. Even U.S. Air Force personnel have acknowledged that fact. When John Keel’s research into the Mothman phenomenon of Point Pleasant, West Virginia was at its height in 1967, he came across more than a few cases of MIB. But, Keel was also given other accounts of strange characters who scared the you-know-what out of witnesses to UFO activity. They acted like the MIB, some of them looked weird – just like the MIB, too. But, they had the military uniform, rather than the suit.

In early ’67, Keel was able to speak to a Colonel George P. Freeman about this strange development. Freeman said: “Mysterious men dressed in Air Force uniforms or bearing impressive credentials from government agencies have been silencing UFO witnesses. We have checked a number of these cases, and these men are not connected to the Air Force in any way. We haven’t been able to find out anything about these men. By posing as Air Force officers and government agents, they are committing a Federal offense. We would sure like to catch one – unfortunately the trail is always too cold by the time we hear about these cases, but we are still trying.”

So, what we have here are cases of what appear to involve the Men in Black – except that they’re not dressed in black. I have a handful of cases of another kind of MIB: Men in Brown. They look just like the Men in Black. That’s to say they are pale, skinny and menacing. Their modus operandi is just the same: they warn, they threaten, and they give people nightmares. But, there’s not a black suit in sight. Typically, the suit is of a very dark brown. I have one case of a light-brown suit, this one from Warminster, England in the 1960s and after the witness encountered a Flying Saucer-type UFO, late one night. I have several cases of MIB wearing black suits, but also wearing largely unheard of (a) striped ties and (b) fedoras with white bands.

Then, there is the matter of the Men in White. In my 2015 book, Men in Black, Rich Reynolds said: “The Men in Black, whom Nick Redfern has documented rather fully in his book, The Real Men in Black, have been with mankind for a lot longer than surmised. They ensued right after the dawn of civilization, if The Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament) and various myths have any reportorial accuracy. The modern-day MIB phenomenon began with Gray Barker’s introduction of them in his 1956 book, They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers. However, those versed in early religious and mythological tales know that Men in Black types have pounced on humanity well before 1956. The difference, which seems to have thrown off MIB enthusiasts, is that those early ‘men’ were garbed in white; Men in White, as it were. The Bible is replete with such encounters: Genesis 18/19: Verses 1 through 29 (in Chapter 19) recounts the visitation of God and/or his angels, telling Abraham about a pending birth and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.”

So, what we have here is a phenomenon that, for Ufologists, began with the MIB – and meaning quite literally strange characters in black and nothing else. Today, however, things have changed a bit. The term now encompasses entities that are MIB-like, but with certain, significant differences when it comes to their clothing. Should those terms “Men in Black” and “M.I.B.” be phased out, and replaced by something that has a broader scope and meaning? Any thoughts on what such a title should be?

WAT PROBEERT MEN TE VERBERGEN OP VENUS? ( VIDEO )

Is het eigenlijk niet vreemd dat altijd alle aandacht uit gaat naar de planeet Mars, terwijl er een andere dichterbij is die ook wel de zusterplaneet van de aarde wordt genoemd? 

Die planeet is Venus en misschien is het wel geen toeval dat er nauwelijks aandacht aan deze planeet wordt besteed die qua grootte overeenkomt met de aarde. 

Iemand die al jarenlang een obsessie heeft voor deze planeet is Tyler, de man achter Secureteam, die in het dagelijks leven, in het echt, te maken heeft gehad en heeft met de zogenaamde men in black. 

Alhoewel hij na de laatste gebeurtenissen behoorlijk was geschrokken omdat dit soort inbreuk op je privéleven toch wel heftig is en hij enkele dagen rust heeft genomen, is hij nu weer terug en dit keer met één van zijn favoriete onderwerpen, de planeet Venus. 

Er wordt zelfs gezegd dat miljoenen jaren geleden het klimaat op Venus heel anders was en er ongeveer qua omgeving zo zo uitzag als de aarde en er ongetwijfeld leven op voor kwam. Het verhaal gaat dan verder met dat er iets gebeurde waardoor Venus enorm opwarmde en de planeet bijna letterlijk ging koken, waardoor het nu de heetste planeet in ons zonnestelsel is met een temperatuur van meer dan 450 graden Celsius aan de oppervlakte. 

In 2010 besloten de Japanners echter om een ruimtesonde richting Venus te sturen: 

Akatsuki (ochtendgloren) (ook wel PLANET-C genoemd) is een Japanse ruimtesonde van JAXA die op 20 mei 2010 werd gelanceerd om de atmosfeer van de planeet Venus te onderzoeken. 

De bedoeling was dat de sonde in december 2010 in een baan om de planeet gebracht zou worden om vandaar uit twee jaar lang metingen te doen. De sonde is hiervoor uitgerust met drie ultravioletcamera's en een infraroodcamera. Verder is apparatuur aan boord om bliksems en vulkanisme te detecteren. In december 2010 lukte het echter niet om in een baan om Venus te komen. Door een probleem in de connectie met de druktanks raakte de motor oververhit en ernstig beschadigd. 

In december 2015 kwam Akatsuki na een langgerekte elliptische baan rond de zon weer in de buurt van Venus en op 7 december slaagde JAXA er wel in de sonde met behulp van de secondaire motoren in een baan rond de planeet te brengen. 

Toen men echter op een gegeven moment één van de zonnepanelen open klapte, was er in de verte iets waar te nemen dat als het ware in de ruimte lag te wachten en toekeek.

Eenmaal aangekomen bij Venus begon de Akatsuki foto’s te nemen en stuurde deze terug naar de aarde, waar men iets heel vreemds ontdekte.

Een vreemde langwerpige gebogen vorm die tot op de dag van vandaag wetenschappers voor raadsels stelt. Het wordt beschreven als een soort mysterieuze golf 

Daarnaast zijn er op foto’s vreemde donkere plekken ontdekt, zoals te zien op de volgende afbeelding.

Dit zijn allemaal tekenen dat er dan misschien op dit moment aan de grond geen leven is op de planeet Venus, maar wel degelijk hoog in de atmosfeer. 

En hoewel men dan zegt dat er geen leven op de grond mogelijk is, hoe kan het dat er dan toch opnames verschijnen van iets dat niet anders omschreven kan worden dan als een solide structuur in de vorm van de letter H?
