Could We Build the Millennium Falcon from 'Star Wars'?
Could We Build the Millennium Falcon from 'Star Wars'?
By Chelsea Gohd, Space.com Staff Writer
With so many incredible, newly developing technologies, could we build a real-life Millennium Falcon? In short, no. But we're getting closer.
In the "Star Wars" universe, the Millennium Falcon is heralded as the coolest ship around. The cargo vessel that Han Solo originally won from Lando Calrissian in the Cloud City Sabacc Tournament, the Millennium Falcon lies at the center of some of the most incredible adventures in the series.
The Millennium Falcon's signature speed comes from its hyperdrive, a propulsion system that pushes the vessel to light speed — though Han Solo has famously boasted that the ship can travel even faster. The hyperdrive functions by using "hypermatter particles" to send the craft into hyperspace, an alternative dimension reached by traveling at or beyond the speed of light. This technique uses wrinkles in the fabric of space-time, or wormholes: pieces of the fabric that fold over to connect two otherwise-distant points.
Now, while the theory of general relativity does predict wormholes, they are still just a theoretical phenomenon. So, because we can't prove their existence, we certainly can't manipulate them for our own purposes. Stephen Hsu, a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Oregon, told our sister site Live Science, "You would need some very exotic type of matter in order to stabilize a wormhole, and it's not clear whether such matter exists in the universe."
Now, there is some excitement in the scientific community surrounding an engine called the EmDrive. This is not a hyperdrive, or a warp drive as some have suggested. But it bounces microwaves around a chamber as a substitute for propellant. Recently, researchers put the EmDrive to the testand found that the thrust it produced comes from some kind of electromagnetic interaction that is likely between the engine's power cables and Earth's magnetic field, according to their study This might not be the end of the EmDrive as a potential, future engine — but it certainly isn't a hyperdrive.
G-Forces
Even if we suspend our disbelief and accept the ship's speed, another issue arises: g-forces. According to calculations from Wired, passengers aboard the Millennium Falcon could experience up to about 12 g's while traveling at the speeds portrayed in the films (though this might not be the case if they are traveling through hyperspace). This is comparable to being in a gravitational field 12 times higher than what we normally experience on Earth. ["Star Wars" Spaceships from a Galaxy Far, Far Away]
At 1 g, we can still push blood up to our brains, but as the g's increase, this becomes more difficult. Twelve g's is about the maximum that jet-fighter pilots can experience before passing out, but this assumes they're wearing g-suits, which squeeze the legs in high-g situations to prevent blood from being pushed down.
So, theoretically, without high-g suits, the human passengers aboard the Millennium Falcon would black out when the ship took high-g turns, even without traveling as fast as Han Solo has bragged it can.
Holochess
At Chewbacca's request, a hologram "chess," or holochess, table was installed on the Millennium Falcon so passengers could play Dejarik, a classic strategy game in the "Star Wars" universe. But while astronauts aboard the International Space Station won't be playing Chewie's favorite game anytime soon, hologram technology is inching its way into modern spacecraft.
In 2016, after some launch difficulties, two of Microsoft's HoloLens AR headsets traveled to the space station to aid crewmembers. Additionally, the innovators behind the Voxiebox have built an early version sort of holochess. You can't feel the pieces or move them with your hands — but this feature is not far off, and researchers have already gotten close.
Aboard most ships in the "Star Wars" universe, and throughout sci-fi stories, deflector shields are a staple security measure. Whenever conflict arises, deflectors go right up, keeping the ship intact despite enemy attacks. But is this just a well-worn science fiction trope? Not exactly.
Back in 2014, ExtremeTech profiled a team of students from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom who considered the possibility of using plasma to build such a deflector. The students took notice of the Earth's ionosphere, a part of the upper atmosphere that contains plasma.
Currently, we bounce communication signals off of the ionosphere's plasma to send them to different locations on Earth. This "invisible shield" around Earth was the inspiration for this team's suggestion that you could use and manipulate plasma to deflect electromagnetic radiation — such as that coming from an energy-based or laser weapon, possibly. Such a shield isn't technically feasible yet, but their general concept to use plasma to deflect radiation is certainly within the realm of possibility.
Additionally,in 2008, Ruth Bamford of the Science and Technology Facilities Council's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in England and her colleagues studied the possibility of deflecting radiation using a portable magnetic shield. While it's not the battle-ready deflector we've seen in Star Wars, it's definitely a step in that direction.
Other than its description as a power source for starships like the Millennium Falcon, the Quadex power core is a fairly mysterious technology. The series never explains how the power core operates, so it is equally possible and impossible that we could build one.
Quad Laser Cannons
Some of the Millennium Falcon's most powerful and most-used weapons, its quad laser cannons are also relatively feasible. The U.S. military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has spent years developing the closest thing we have to a "Star Wars" style laser cannon. It can fit on a fighter jet but is still powerful enough to shoot a 150-kilowatt energy beam.
Additionally, researchers have suggested that a coherent amplification network (CAN) laser, a beam created from multiple small lasers, could get rid of space debris surrounding Earth by vaporizing a thin layer of matter off of the surface of the space junk. This would push the debris downward, where it would burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
Laser weapons may currently be large, dangerous and difficult to create, but they are certainly possible.
Hodgepodge Design
The technologies aboard the Millennium Falcon are not a constant. The ship is an ever-evolving amalgamation of assorted, stolen, customized and found parts. It might seem odd that a highly capable future ship could be assembled this way — but when you think about current spaceflight advances, it makes sense.
The Millennium Falcon has a lot in common with SpaceX's Dragon, whose reusable design is optimized for efficient, sustainable launches. Similarly, the Millennium Falcon's design relies on the reuse of found parts.
With long-term space travel, tech aboard a ship would occasionally break, become obsolete, etc. It might not always be possible to 3D print new items or make repairs with what is already available on a ship. Future space travelers might do what Han Solo has done and repurpose found parts to efficiently survive in the cosmos.
The Millennium Falcon boasts a seemingly endless list of gadgets and capabilities. From its oversize sensor dish to its Gigyrodyne sublight engine, thrust-pressure manifold and sensor-proof smuggling compartments, the tech aboard this ship ranges from highly plausible to entirely fictional.
So, humanity is not quite ready to build a Millennium Falcon. Still, many developing technologies could one day make onboard tech like laser cannons and invisible deflector shields a reality. Until then, we can always watch Han Solo and company zip through the galaxy on one of science fiction's most iconic ships.
Jupiter's Great Red Spot Is Spectacular (and Weird) in This Juno Photo
Jupiter's Great Red Spot Is Spectacular (and Weird) in This Juno Photo
By Mike Wall, Space.com Senior Writer
A gorgeous photo by NASA's Juno spacecraft shows Jupiter as you've probably never seen it before.
"This new perspective of Jupiter from the south makes the Great Red Spot appear as though it is in northern territory," NASA officials wrote today (May 21) in a description of the image. "This view is unique to Juno and demonstrates how different our view is when we step off the Earth and experience the true nature of our three-dimensional universe."
The newly released photo is a composite of multiple images snapped by Juno's JunoCam on April 1, during the spacecraft's most recent close flyby of the solar system's largest planet. Juno took the constituent photos from a distance of 10,768 miles (17,329 kilometers) to 42,849 miles (68,959 km) above Jupiter's cloud tops, NASA officials said.
Citizen scientists Gerald Eichstädt and Seán Doran then processed the raw JunoCam data into the finished photo that was released today. (Anyone can do such processing work; to learn more, go to the JunoCam site.)
The $1.1 billion Juno mission launched in August 2011 and arrived at Jupiter in July 2016. The probe orbits on a highly elliptical path, zooming above the gas giant's poles once every 53 days.
The solar-powered Juno makes most of its scientific observations during these close approaches, gathering information about Jupiter's composition, structure and gravitational and magnetic fields. The probe's data should help researchers better understand how Jupiter, and by extension the solar system, formed and evolved, mission team members have said.
The April 1 encounter was Juno's 12th science flyby of Jupiter. The 13th will occur on Thursday (May 24).
In an attempt to solve the mystery of how a cluster of human cells orient themselves into a front, back, top and bottom of an embryo, a group of U.S. researchers avoided restrictions on using human embryos by doing something even more controversial – but apparently legal … they grafted human cells onto chicken embryos to create a form of human-chicken hybrid. Wait … what? Is this the first step to creating a real Chickenman? Who will play him in the movie?
“No one knew what happens after the ball of cells attaches itself to the uterus.”
Ali Brivanlou, a developmental biologist at the Rockefeller University in New York City, headed the research and is the lead author of the study published this week in the journal Nature. If you’re up on your developmental biology, you’ll remember Brivanlou’s name from a previous study in 2016 when he and a different team grew human embryos in a Petri dish for 14 days, breaking the previous record of nine days. U.S. laws forced the team to destroy the cells at that point, but there seemed to be no biological reason why they couldn’t have continued to grow. The team was frustrated because 14 days was not long enough to see the cells organize themselves into future body parts.
Have we seen this before?
Enter the salamanders.
Brivanlou already knew that the organization was done by special ‘organizer cells’ which were discovered in 1924 when German researchers Hilde Mangold and Hans Spemann transplanted cells from a salamander onto a salamander embryo and watched them grow into a second conjoined salamander. That sounds like the opening scene of a horror movie that could only be made better/scarier if the cells were human.
Enter the chickens.
Brivanlou also knew that chicken embryos mature sooner and grow faster than human embryos. Under his direction, the researchers avoided the 14-day restriction by growing human embryonic stem cells into embryo-like (what would that be?) “structures” called gastruloids that they then attached to 12-hour-old chicken embryos which they claimed are the chicken-equivalents of 14-day-old human embryos.
Enter the human-chicken hybrids.
The human organizer cells in the embryo-like (this still sounds fishy) structure organized the chicken embryo to form a second conjoined chicken embryo (sound familiar?) which Brivanlou claimed did not reach maturity and “hatch.”
Or were they destroyed by nervous or guilt-ridden researchers?
“Once you transplant the human organizer into a chicken embryo, the language it uses to instruct the bird cells to establish the brain and nervous system is exactly the same as the one used by amphibians and fish.”
I told you it sounded fishy. While Brivanlou claims that this is an ethical solution to studying early embryonic growth in order to potentially grow artificial organs or manipulate cells into regenerative tissues to combat diseases such as Alzheimer’s, he still prefers to use the real thing.
“There is no substitute for studying the real embryo. Everything else we do when we try to model kind of oversimplifies it. Human embryonic stem cells and eggs have all the information. Everything else is pushing the first domino.”
They’ve created a human-chicken hybrid. Are the dominoes already falling?
Would chickens falling like dominoes be a cool opening to the “Chickenman” movie trailer?
The search for alien life hasn’t been a fruitful one yet. NASA and other space agencies have greatly improved their abilities to detect new exoplanets, but identifying distant planets is a long way from discovering the first evidence of life outside of Earth. Scientists have identified some signs that a few nearby bodies may have the ingredients necessary to support life, but so far it seems as if we’re all alone in our neck of the cosmic woods.
Still, the search continues for planets which lie in the “Goldilocks zone,” or circumstellar habitable zone if you’re not into the whole brevity thing. This area is the orbital region surrounding stars which is the perfect distance to support life – not too hot, not too cold. Astronomers frequently discuss finding Earth-like planets out of the assumption that our planet must somehow by the ideal type of world to support life.
A “hot” eyeball planet.
However, a new theory proposed by astronomer Sean Raymond at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Bordeaux in France says that perhaps we’re focusing too much on finding new Earths and we should turn our attention instead to discovering what he calls “eyeball planets.” These are a type of tidally locked planet, meaning the same side of the planet always faces towards its host star or planet. Raymond proposes that these orbits can result in two different types of eyeball-like planets in which there is a warmer side and a colder side. On a “hot” eyeball planet, the hot ‘pupil’ of the eye is composed of rock while the cold side is liquid; on a “cold” eyeball planet the ‘pupil’ is liquid while the dark side remains ice.
Raymond writes that the Milky Way “may be littered with wild varieties of eyeball planets” and that the search for alien life “will almost certainly start with these worlds.”
There is good reason to think that the first potentially life-bearing worlds that are now being detected around other stars probably look very different than Earth. Rather, these planets are more likely to look like giant eyeballs whose gaze is forever fixed on their host stars.
Raymond’s argument for prioritizing these types of worlds in our search for life is that “eyeball” planets can exist in a much wide range of circumstellar space than the Earth-like planets we seek out in stars’ Goldilocks zones. Thus, there could me many more of these eyeball planets out there in the universe than there are Earth-like planets, opening up further possibilities for discovering alien life.
The US Department of Defense funded a series of studies on advanced aerospace technologies, including warp drives.
The studies came out of a program that also funded research into UFO sightings.
One report describes the possibility of using dark energy to warp space and effectively travel faster than light.
However, a theoretical physicist says there's "zero chance that anyone within our lifetimes or the next 1,000 years" will see it happen.
Sometime after August 2008, the US Department of Defense contracted dozens of researchers to look into some very, very out-there aerospace technologies, including never-before-seen methods of propulsion, lift, and stealth.
Two researchers came back with a 34-page report for the propulsion category, titled "Warp Drive, Dark Energy, and the Manipulation of Extra Dimensions."
The document is dated April 2, 2010, though it was only recently released by the Defense Intelligence Agency. (Business Insider first learned about in a post by Paul Szoldra at Task & Purpose.)
The authors suggest we may not be too far away from cracking the mysteries of higher, unseen dimensions and negative or "dark energy," a repulsive force that physicists believe is pushing the universe apart at ever-faster speeds.
"Control of this higher dimensional space may bе а source of technological control оvеr the dark energy density and could ultimately play а role in the development of exotic propulsion technologies; specifically, а warp drive," the report says, adding: "Trips to the planets within our own solar system would take hours rather than years, and journeys to local star system would be measured in weeks rather than hundreds of thousands of years."
However, Sean Carroll, a theoretical physicist at Caltech who studies and follows the topics covered by the report, had a lot of cold water to pour on the report's optimism.
"It's bits and pieces of theoretical physics dressed up as if it has something to do with potentially real-world applications, which it doesn't," Carroll said. "This is not crackpot. This is not the Maharishi saying we're going to use spirit energy to fly off the ground — this is real physics. But this is not something that's going to connect with engineering anytime soon, probably anytime ever."
James Т. Lacatski, a DIA official listed as a contact on the report, did not immediately to respond a query from Business Insider.
Where the warp-drive study came from
The nature of this study is still making its way to the public.
What is known is that it's an "acquisition threat support" reference document, which helps the US military anticipate or describe new enemy technologies — apparently including (very, very) notional ones. It was also one work in "а series of advanced technology reports" for something called the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program.
The New York Times and Politico revealed AATIP's existence in December. The outlets said Harry Reid, the former US senator from Nevada, helped organize it and secure millions in secret government funding — sometimes called "black money" — for the effort.
A large share of this money reportedly went to Robert Bigelow, a real-estate mogul who's working to build private space stations through Bigelow Aerospace. Bigelow, a friend of Reid's, has for years funded his own UFO research.
The billionaire formed a separate entity, called Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, to secure the government funding and hired 46 researchers and "dozens of other support personnel," KLAS-TV said.
An anonymous senior intelligence official told Politico that AATIP began mostly to root out the existence of unknown Chinese and Russian military technologies. But after a couple of years, "the consensus was we really couldn't find anything of substance," the official said.
"They produced reams of paperwork," he added. "After all of that, there was really nothing there that we could find."
AAWSAP and AATIP reportedly ran out of funding in 2011 or 2012.
Scientists are also skeptical of UFOs, even after viewing spooky videos obtained by AATIP, one of which shows an undated encounter with "an aircraft surrounded by some kind of glowing aura traveling at high speed and rotating as it moves," The Times wrote.
Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute, previously told Business Insider that after 50 years of reported alien visits, "the really good evidence that we're being visited still has failed to surface."
"It is a little odd that aliens would come hundreds and hundreds of light-years to do nothing," Shostak added.
The larger program that looked into the feasibility of warp drives, wormholes, and stargates is meeting similar scrutiny from established experts.
The physics of warp drives
In the warp-drive study, the authors laid out several well-established ideas in physics.
Those concepts include dark energy; general relativity, pioneered by Albert Einstein, that predicted some bizarre yet real phenomena in the universe, like the warping of space-time and gravitational waves; the Casimir effect, which describes the existence of a quantum "vacuum energy"; and M-theory, the idea that perhaps seven extra dimensions — which a warp drive could exploit — may be wrapped up in the four we're familiar with, including time.
It then mashes this work together to lay out a potential use of these properties that'd circumvent Einstein's cardinal rule: Nothing can travel faster than light in a vacuum.
"If one is to realistically entertain the notion of interstellar exploration in timeframes of а human lifespan, а dramatic shift in the traditional approach to spacecraft propulsion is necessary," said the report, which goes on to suggest that a warp drive might be feasible.
The study includes a table of various destinations and how quickly they might be reached by bending space-time to travel 100 times the speed of light. The way this might work, the report says, is by using a lot of dark energy to expand an extra dimension into a "bubble." Such a bubble would be made large enough to fit a spaceship of perhaps 100 cubic meters, roughly the size of a semitrailer truck.
A contracting region of space-time in front of the ship, plus an expanding region behind it, would then propel the bubble and ship down a sort of space-time tube without technically exceeding the speed of light.
Carroll also says the concept of a warp drive "is not crackpot" — Miguel Alcubierre, a Mexican theoretical physicist, invented the concept in 1994.
"You can't go faster than the speed of light, but what you can imagine doing is effectively twisting space-time so that it looks like you're moving faster than the speed of light," Carroll said. "If you want to go to Alpha Centauri, for example, you can ask yourself: 'Well, could I bend space-time so that Alpha Centauri is next to me, so that it takes a day to go there, rather than tens of [thousands of] years? Can I make the warping of space-time do that?' And the answer is sure, you can do that."
But Carroll says the DIA report goes too far in its analysis.
"There is something called a warp drive, there are extra dimensions, there is a Casimir effect, and there's dark energy — all of these things are true," he said. "But there's zero chance that anyone within our lifetimes or the next 1,000 years are going to build anything that makes use of any of these ideas, for defense purposes or anything like that."
The problems and perils of faster-than-light travel
Carrol said warp drives were so removed from plausible reality because no one knows what negative energy is, how to make it, or how to store it, let alone put it to use.
What's more, the amount of negative energy you'd need to reach a place like Alpha Centauri — the nearest star system to Earth, at 4.367 light-years away — in a couple of years with a 100-cubic-meter ship is truly astronomical.
"If you took the entire Earth and annihilated it into energy, that's how much energy you'd need, except you'd need a negative amount of that, which no one has any clue how to make," Carroll said. "We're not taking the atoms of the Earth and dispersing them like the Death Star would do — we're making them cease to exist."
Then this energy has to be captured, stored, and used with 100% efficiency.
"It's completely crazy talk," Carroll said. "It's not something like, 'Oh, we need better transistors.' This is something that is not anywhere within the realm of feasibility."
The study says its conclusions are speculative, acknowledges the negative-energy figure "is, indeed, an incredible number," and adds that "a full understanding of the true nature of dark energy may be many years away."
However, it suggests that "experimental breakthroughs at the Large Hadron Collider оr developments in the field of M-theory could lead to а quantum leap in our understanding of this unusual form of energy and perhaps help to direct technological innovations."
Nearly a decade on, none of these developments have panned out. The LHC has yet to find any evidence of particles that'd crack the mysteries of dark energy, and experiments have not really advanced M-theory.
But assuming negative energy could somehow be extracted, a planet's worth of exotic matter could be fed into a spaceship's warp-drive engines, and a suitable destination could be picked, the crew might encounter numerous show-stopping problems.
Interstellar travelers may lose control of their ship the moment they start it because of the warping of space itself. Hawking radiation, theoretically found at the edges of black holes and other highly warped regions of space, might roast passengers while shutting down their warp field. And slowing down may be deadly — several light-years' worth of cosmic dust and gas between the origin and destination might turn into a dangerous shockwave of high-energy particles and radiation upon arrival.
"It's possible in the sense that I can't actually rule it out, but I don't think it's actually possible," Carroll said of warp drives and faster-than-light travel. "I think if we knew physics better, we'd just say, 'No, you can't do that.'"
Representational Image YouTube screenshot/ UFOmania - The truth is out there
A video apparently shot from Ireland on May 17, 2018, featuring two mysterious flying objects in the sky is now going viral on the internet.
The video shot in broad daylight shows two creepy objects in the sky above Saint Patrick Cathedral, blinking in regular succession. As the clip went viral, conspiracy theorists soon assumed that aliens have made a brief visit to Ireland.
However, some other section of conspiracy theorists argues that these UFOs are actually secret military crafts which might be using anti-gravity flying technology. Skeptics, on the other hand, clarified that the objects spotted in the skies are mere drones.
"It goes on a fair bit longer and they just disappear. There was a suggestion made that it may be drones, but if you watch the full footage, these objects do NOT land, simply vanish," said dmcresins, a YouTuber who originally uploaded the video.
As the video went viral, xX-EMMA-2017-Xx RAVER, a YouTube user revealed that she witnessed a similar sighting in Sunderland, United Kingdom.
"I have seen this exact same thing at around the same time! No one would believe me! I saw this in Sunderland UK yesterday," commented the YouTuber.
A section of people strongly believes that Ireland, especially Dublin is slowly emerging as a UFO hotspot. In the past two decades, there have been 19 recorded UFO sightings in the Irish capital.
A similar incident happened in England three days back when people spotted a triangular UFO with bright lights hovering in the sky. As the video grabbed public attention, conspiracy theorists argued that these vessels are actually the secretive TR-3B, developed by the US Air Force during the time of Gulf War.
As UFO sightings are dramatically increasing in all corners of the globe, conspiracy theorists are urging governments to reveal the exact truth behind these sightings. Some people even allege that the governments are working hand-in-glove with aliens.

Dino-Killing Asteroid Impact Warmed Earth's Climate for 100,000 Years
Dino-Killing Asteroid Impact Warmed Earth's Climate for 100,000 Years
By Tereza Pultarova, Space.com Contributor
Carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere after the impact of the Chicxulub asteroid, which ended the era of dinosaurs some 65 million years ago, warmed the Earth's climate for 100,000 years, a new study has revealed.
The study, based on an analysis of fossil records, suggested that the Earth's overall temperature increased by 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) over that time.
Scientists have long theorized that after the piece of space rock with a diameter of 6 to 9 miles (7 to 14 kilometers) smashed into the Yucatan Peninsula near today's town of Chicxulub in Mexico, the temperature of the planet first rose sharply for minutes or hours, MacLeod said. After that, it plunged down for months to decades, because the huge amount of dust and soot thrown into the atmosphere by the impact blocked the sun's rays. Eventually, however, carbon dioxide released during the impact led to global warming.
MacLeod's study is the first to present empirical evidence of how long this greenhouse gas-related global warming lasted and how substantial it was.
"We thought that we could resolve this question by looking at fossilized bits of fish teeth, scales and bones from the El Kef section in Tunisia," MacLeod told Space.com, referring to a paleontological site in northwestern Tunisia known for having one of the world's best-preserved fossil records from the period before and after the Chicxulub impact
"This place is known for having a beautiful record across the interval that we are looking at — the so called Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary — the mass extinction event following the Chicxulub impact."
The researchers looked at the concentrations of different oxygen isotopes in the fossils. These isotopes differ in the number of neutrons in the oxygen atom and, according to MacLeod, behave slightly differently from one another.
"One of the differences is, as temperature increases, the amount of the light oxygen isotope, oxygen 16, in a mineral increases relatively," MacLeod said.
"We are measuring the ratio of oxygen 16 to oxygen 18. Every 1 part per 1,000 that the ratio changes correlates to an about 4.5- to 5-degree [C, or 8.1 to 9 degrees F] change in temperature."
The researchers analyzed 40 samples taken from the site in Tunisia: 10 samples from the 50,000-year period before the impact, 20 samples from the 100,000 years immediately after the impact and additional 10 samples from the following 200,0000 years.
"We found that there was a really big difference in oxygen isotopes between these three sets of samples — unambiguous," said MacLeod.
He said he and his team now want to look at fossil samples from other parts of the world and check for similar patterns.
"It's one thing to find 5 degrees [C, 9 degrees F] of warming in North Africa. It's even more impressive to find 5 degrees of warming in North Africa and perhaps 10 degrees [C, 18 degrees F] of warming off the coast of Australia," he said. "That would really strengthen the idea that it's a global signal and a greenhouse gas-related change."
The study, MacLeod said, not only sheds more light on what happened to the Earth's systems after the devastating collision, but it also raises questions about the consequences of current human activities.
"If I were to draw a line under the lessons of this study for the modern era, it would be to contemplate the idea that what we are doing in our lifetimes will affect the Earth for the next 100,000 years, which is pretty daunting," MacLeod said.
Opwarming Beide scenario’s lijken heel aannemelijk. Maar er kan er maar eentje kloppen. Welke?

Do Aliens Exist? The question still needs to be answered | Extraterrestrial Life
Some people say that we all are not living alone in this entire universe. This means Aliens are real.
Some people also describe and narrate their own haunted experiences of aliensfollowing them in their night walks, mostly in the small town yards/fields in America.
All these things assembles our thoughts to think whether aliens exist or not. Also day by day increasing reports regarding the aliens evidence have increased our doubts much more.
Whatever you think you can relate to our thoughts below.
• Scientists are also confuse on the fact that is there any megastructure of alien orbiting a distant star ?
Flickering of a distant star was observed by scientists. Jason Wright, researcher was the first person to observe and suggest that aliens could be responsible for the flickering of the stars.
Tabby's Star
Last year in October new theory was explained behind the reason for a bizarre blinking of that distant star, i.e. Tabby's Star which caused it's light to dim eventualy. The light was being blocked by a huge object called a Dyson Sphere which is a theoretical structure built all around the star in order to harvest its energy. It was claimed that the behaviour of Tabby's Star was caused by a swarm of orbiting cometsthat block out the light or it could be result of complex phenomenon called avalache statistics. Also Read:-
• It is also believed that Alien Life (Extraterrestrials ) living in an ocean on Jupiter's moon
Europa, which is about the size of Earth's moon is believed by scientist that it has an ocean hidden beneath its frozen crust. It might be possible that scientist could find alien organisms if this turn to be correct.
Europa
Earlier it was thought that moon contain huge ocean as twice as much water as Earth's oceans.NASA also said that Europa, best place in solar system to look for present day life apart from our home planet.
They also believed it has found evidence vapour of water plumes becoming active on the surface of Jupiter's moon.
• There have been lots of evidences of ancient times regarding aliens and UFOs It was not easy or rather to say impossible for ancient people to find out the evidences of UFOand aliens. There is one ancient picture of The Madonna with Saint Giovannino which is also called UFO painting.
The Madonna with Saint Giovannino
It is a 15th century painting for which the debates continue till today. It depicts the Virgin Mary, in backdrop of the painting, a man and his dog staring at a disk-like object that is suspiciously familiar (ufo). This (painting) is not only the evidences of alien life in ancient times but the ancient cave paintings and Sanskrit Scrolls are also depicting alien life. It is also in the Bible in The Book of Ezekiel. •From the ancient evidences of aliens one more question rises is : Do the aliens trying to contact us ? Since number of strange signals from distant stars have been recieved in recent years so some of the scientists and experts believe that aliens could be trying to contact us. Now regarding this topic lots of debate gone on air and went off but ultimately none of us can get any satisfactory evidence about it.
Frank Drake
The likelihood of the existence of alien life was estimated by devising an equation by astronomer Frank Drake in 1961. And trust me or not there are around hundreds of thousands of such planets exist (technically). For More Info:
•Coming to the astronomers, many reports have been taken which indicates aliens life There have been many reports regarding the UFOs. Many of the astronomers, who got there in space claims the sightings. Edgar Mitchell, Dr. Brian O'Leary also calimed the same.
UFO
The calims got more stronger when Buzz Aldrin shared his on board experience of Apollo 11when they saw that something was flying alongside them. They thought it was the detached rocket's final stage but the thinking was wrong untill mission control confirmed that it was more than 600 miles away. •There are many several individual experience of aliens and their existence. Several exoplanets have already been spotted which are outside our solar system. Kepler-NASA planet finding Spacecraft, discovered more than 400 exoplanets since its launch in 2009.
According to the reports 216 Earth like exoplanets have been found within GoldilocksZone. Since it is located thousands of light years away they are out of our reach which is turning to be the main problem. Many dwarf planets have been found but still the doubts remained as doubts regarding theexistence of the alien and aliens life. Where they live ? Have aliens visited our earth? Question still to be answered...
That's all from this blog. Hope you like it. I upload this types of blogs regularly and all of us will reveal the mysteries of universe and space.
COUPLE SAW ’40 UFOS’ HOVERING OVER BRITISH BEACH BEFORE MAJOR MILITARY OPERATION
COUPLE SAW ’40 UFOS’ HOVERING OVER BRITISH BEACH BEFORE MAJOR MILITARY OPERATION
The husband and wife, aged in their 80s, who have not been named claim to have witnessed the phenomenal sight over Wilsthorpe Beach in East Yorkshire.
Paranormal investigator Paul Sinclair tells their story in a new book he is penning about the Wilsthorpe Incident, which has been branded Britain’s new Roswell due to the mysterious military activity seemingly connected to UFO sightings.
The couple’s bizarre claims concern the night of September 14 2009 at 11pm.
They lived in one of 30 flats that overlook the sea at Wilsthorpe.
The pair decided to go to bed, however, as the woman went to turn off the lights, she saw a glow outside.
Mr Sinclair said “something told her to look outside” before she opened the front door and looked out to sea where she was amazed to see several glowing UFOs above the coast.
Mr Sinclair said she described them as 15-feet long and eight-feet wide “spaceships over the sea”.
He said: “She said there was a huge circle of boomerang-shaped craft.
“She said there were loads – 30 to 40 and the sea below was bubbling, banging and crashing.
“They were silent, but there was electricity going into the sea.
“Ron (her husband) said it was like a blue and white Christmas tree over the sea. He was frightened and left after ten minutes and put his head under the pillow for the night.
“But, she told me she was not frightened and knew she was never going to see anything like it again in her life.”
She stayed for around half and hour before the objects began to “lift out of the circle in pairs at a 45 degree angle until just two were left which shot off straight up.”
Two Chinook helicopters full of RAF personnel landed at the beach by the remote hamlet.
Mr Sinclair also spoke with a man who runs a bait shop at Bridlington Harbour, who told him his bait diggers had seen “triangle” craft enter the sea in 2009 over the same period.
He said two of his bait diggers had been on Wilsthorpe Beach the day the couple saw the military operation.
They told of seeing “triangles entering the sea” and later “being surrounded by soldiers.”
Separately a man working on a boat at Blythe Park boat compound also confirmed the military presence, he said.
Mr Sinclair submitted a Freedom of Information request to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to find out why the operation took place on September 15.
However, the response he eventually received, said it was just a “routine military exercise” and few other details were provided.
The reply said “no live ammunition was used” and “any explosions heard were controlled detonations of simulated ammunitions.”
The response added that it was “one of a number of regular exercises” as part of work to defend the UK, and new locations would often be used with landowners’ consent.
Mr Sinclair continues to investigate the case and is trying to obtain historic coast guard reports from the period.
He believes it is connected to a high level of reported UFO activity along a 25-mile stretch of the East Yorkshire and North Yorkshire coast from Brandesburton in East Yorkshire to Scarborough, North Yorkshire, between May and September 2009.
High levels of military aircraft flying low and circling near his home in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, were also recorded that September.
Mr Sinclair said the case did not yet prove a UFO presence, but: “I think the military arrived because of the objects.”
In a post on his Truth Proof Facebook page about the case, he wrote: “Nothing found can prove with any certainty the UFOs were over the sea as an elderly couple claim, or that the black triangles entered the sea in September 2009 like the bait diggers described.
“All I can do is stack the evidence for and against, either side of the scale.”
PENTAGON’S OFFICIAL UFO REPORT ON ‘OTHERWORLDLY’ ENCOUNTER BETWEEN F/A-18S AND UFO SURFACES
PENTAGON’S OFFICIAL UFO REPORT ON ‘OTHERWORLDLY’ ENCOUNTER BETWEEN F/A-18S AND UFO SURFACES
One of the most famous and recently talked about UFO sightings occurred in 2004 when an unidentified flying object nicknamed the ‘Tic Tac’ was intercepted and chased by U.S. Navy Hornets. The news was picked up last year when the world found out about a secretive Pentagon program to investigate UFO encounters.
Now, declassified documents regarding the Tic-Tac UFO, composed by the Pentagon’s Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program (AATIP) have been released to the public revealed incredible features displayed by the UFO, as it was being chased by US fighter pilots.
The official report by the Pentagons came to the following conclusions:
The UFO was able to ‘cloak’ itself, becoming invisible visually to the naked eye.
The craft manifested extreme performance but did not have lifting structures or control surfaces required for traditional flight.
The ‘Anomalous Aerial Vehicle’ was of unknown origin and represented technology not currently in the possession of the U.S. or any other nation.
In recent years, a treasure trove of declassified UFO-related documents has been released to the public, and with them, we have learned that our governments have paid particular attention to the study of Unidentified Flying Objects.
Furthermore, it has been proven—based on the declassified documents—that fighter pilots as well as ordinary pilots, have come across flying objects which they believe, display ‘aerial qualities, unlike any known aircraft.’
Tic-Tac UFO—not from this world?
In December of 2017, the New York Times revealed the existence of a secret Pentagon program that investigated the threats posed by possible UFOs.
“It takes off like nothing I’ve ever seen,” retired Navy pilot David Fravor, who was flying one of the fighter jets that day, told the New York Times. “One minute it’s here, and off it’s gone.”
The most interesting was the encounter of an unidentified object with two fighters (with video included).
Now, new reports have been published about what happened.
“The UFO was reported to be ‘an elongated egg or a Tic Tac shape with a discernable midline horizontal axis”. It was “solid white, smooth, with no edges. It was “uniformly colored with no nacelles, pylons, or wings.” It was approximately 46 feet in length. The F/A-10Fs could not obtain a ‘lock’ on the AAV; however, it could be tracked while stationary and slower speeds with the Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR),” the declassified report reads.
Among the various reports analyzed by the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification program, there was a video showing a white, oval object that was being chased by two F / A-18F fighters off the coast of California in 2004.
The encounter, which since then has been called “The Tic Tac UFO,” moved at high speeds and had no apparent means of propulsion.
This report describes how the anomalous air vehicle (AAV) seen by the two pilots was able to of “descending” very fast “from approximately 60,000 feet to approximately 50 feet in a matter of seconds“.
Also, “it stayed floating or remained motionless on the radar for a short time and then departed at high speeds and turns.”
The report also details what are believed to be advanced features of the AAV, which had apparently been detected by an aircraft carrier off the coast of California “three times separately” in the days before it was intercepted by the F18.
The UFO was able to obtain an “advanced acceleration, aerodynamic and propulsion capacity.”
The object was not susceptible to the army’s radar capabilities and possibly manifested some kind of ability to ‘hide’ or become invisible to the human eye or human observation and a highly advanced ability to operate in the sea completely undetectable by our more advanced sensors.
The Report comes to six conclusions in total.
Read them carefully.
“It was obvious there was something out there and the fighters were taking it seriously,” the report reads.
The ‘Anomalous Aerial Vehicle’ was of unknown origin and represented technology not currently in the possession of the U.S. or any other nation.
It featured broadband RF stealth making the use of radar against it largely ineffective.
The craft manifested extreme performance but did not have lifting structures or control surfaces required for traditional flight.
It showed that it has some kind of advanced propulsion capability making it able to go instantly from hovering to very high speed and to make very abrupt course changes.
It was able to ‘cloak’ itself, becoming invisible visually to the naked eye.
Possibly capable of operating undersea without being detected by the most advanced sub-surface sensors.
One of the most fascinating details, witnessed by the Navy pilots was s disturbance caused by the mysterious UFO.
The pilot reported how a “disturbance appeared to be 50 to 100 meters in diameter and close to round” and “reminded him of images of something rapidly submerging from the surface like a submarine or ship sinking.”
“It is possible that the disturbance was being caused by an AAV, but that the AAV was ‘cloaked’ or invisible to the human eye,” the report concludes. “At no time did they consider the AAV a threat to the battle group. Finally, they had never seen anything like this before and never again.”
THIS IS THE WORLD’S LARGEST CAVE, AND IT CAN FIT 4 GREAT PYRAMIDS INSIDE IT
THIS IS THE WORLD’S LARGEST CAVE, AND IT CAN FIT 4 GREAT PYRAMIDS INSIDE IT
There are truly mysterious places on Earth and this supermassive cave is surely one such place. Seeing the footage from inside the cave will surely give you goosebumps.
One of them is a supermassive cave that can fit four Great Pyramids inside it. Its one of the worlds largest cave chambers, and entering it feels like a journey to the underworld.
The cave is located in the mountainous region of Ziyoun County in China. The Miao Room cavern measures 380.7 million cubic feet—10.78 million cubic meters—in volume. The cave system can fit up to 22 football fields and is located around 325 feet below the surface.
Furthermore, the 2,795 feet-long cave chambers can also comfortably fit a Boeing 747.
The supermassive structure is composed of eight main caverns and more than 200 entrances.
In fact, the cave is so big that it is considered the largest cave in the world in terms of volume and is the second largest cave in terms of surface area.
Having approximate dimensions of about nine kilometers, Hang Son Doong has its own underground river and impressive vegetation that forms a dense jungle.
Studies carried out by the group of scientists of the British Association of Cave Research as well as those of the National Geographic cartography team, who analyzed the measurements of the cave system, found that the largest cavity has more than five kilometers in length, it is 200 meters high and 150 meters wide. While the cave itself was first documented by a Chinese-European geology team in 1989, its true size was not determined until 2013.
During several expeditions, the teams also discovered stalagmites with more than 70 meters in height.
But not only does this massive cave system features its own underground river and jungle, it is also decorated with a maze of fossils and crystals.
UFO sightings are a dime a dozen these days, and they have been for a while, but back in December the New York Times released the results of an investigation into the US military’s monitoring of UFO claims and came up with something totally wild. It was a video released by the Pentagon that shows US Navy pilots tracking the movements of a totally unexplainable aircraft. Now, a local news team from Las Vegas has obtained a military report that offers even more details on the sighting, and the story is somehow becoming even more bizarre than it already was.
The report (PDF here) {TIC TAC UFO EXECUTIVE REPORT_1526682843046_42960218_ver1.0.pdf }explains in great details how a US Navy aircraft carrier played a strange game of hide and seek with multiple Anomalous Aerial Vehicles (AAVs) that demonstrated flight characteristics that should be downright impossible to pull off.
The sightings began on November 10, 2004, and lasted for several days. The objects would appear on the carrier’s radar systems for short periods, seeming to hover still, and then fly off at high speeds.
Confused by exactly what was going on, the crew decided to investigate. When the object appeared again a few days later a pair of F/A-18Fs was directed to check out the strange signals. The result is the now famous video showing the “Tic-Tac” shaped UFO cruising along at incredibly high speeds and making rapid changes in altitude.
In the new report, the object is described as “solid white, smooth, with no edges,” and being “uniformly colored with no nacelles, pylons, or wings.” The report says the object was estimated to be about 46 feet long. By comparison, the F/A-18 fighters that were trailing it measure around 56 feet in length, meaning that whatever it was that the Navy spotted could feasibly hold one or more human-sized individuals.
The pilot said they never felt as though the object was a threat, but the report notes that the AAV seemed to react to the presence of the jets, “demonstrating an advanced acceleration, aerodynamic, and propulsion capability.”
Throughout the several days of seeing the object come and go, the Navy says it may have demonstrated the ability to “cloak” and disappear to the human eye. Its rapid descent from 60,000 feet to just 50 feet before disappearing also made officials consider the possibility that it was capable of operating underwater, effortlessly moving from the air to the sea at will.
NEW MASS SIGHTING: Large group of UFOs seen in three USA locations on same day
NEW MASS SIGHTING: Large group of UFOs seen in three USA locations on same day
Details of the sightings have been reported to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), based in the US, which investigates and records such sightings.
One incident happened at 12.45pm in Pasadena, California, when at least five “circular UFOs” were seen.
The unnamed witness said in a report to NUFORC: “My cousin went outside to throw away the trash after we finished eating breakfast.
“He then returns and tells everyone that their are UFO’s outside.
“I thought he was joking but his wife went outside to look first my wife followed and then my kids and I followed.
“I looked up and in the sky I saw shiny dots in the sky. I observed the objects and then returned inside to get my iPhone to document what I saw.
“We continued watching the objects for 15 minutes or so. Everyone else went back inside and I continued watching the UFOs.”
The witness later saw a father and son, and showed them the objects in the sky.
He said: “I asked if they looked like drones. He replied, ‘No Way’.
Groups of UFOs were seen over three US locations the same day.
“I observed planes in the air and compared them to what I saw and the objects were much higher. “The objects seemed to hover and remain still. One was slowly moving as the others remained still.
“I was able to observe the UFO’s for close to an hour.”
NUFORC said: “Seven observers witness a cluster of at least five tiny white objects that hovered almost motionless in a clear, cloudless sky, for approximately an hour.
“High-quality video footage of the event accompanied the written report.
“Our initial thought was that the objects might have been seagulls soaring in upwelling wind, but the objects do not appear to look, or behave, like birds.”
Express.co.uk showed the video to Scott Brando, who runs debunking website Ufoofinterest.org.
He said he believes they were just a group of helium balloons that had been caught on the wind and were slowly rising away.
The second sighting was at 2.30pm, also on January 13, about 90 miles to the south in Carlsbad, California, when five oval or circular orbs were seen.
The witness was testing out new binoculars.
He wrote to NUFORC: “While I was scanning some edges of a few clouds and some contrails looking towards the west over the ocean around 2.30pm, I noticed one very outstanding whitish looking object, between egg and football shaped but sometimes looking more round and other times having more of a top shape.
The cases are being investigated by NUFORC, but Scott Brando says they were balloons and lanterns.
“I had to assume that possibly the changing viewing angle had something to do with shape change although at times the object seemed to either be vibrating or rotating.
“That object suddenly appeared and was very slowly moving towards the ocean and back nearly directly overhead just above where I live.
“As I continued watching I noticed another object moving very slowly, coming directly out of the setting sun direction and moving very slowly in direct horizontal line towards the first object in what looked like a collision course.
“These objects went from a white colour to sometimes a shimmering metallic or reflective mylar look but it wasn’t solid looking when it began shimmering it seemed to flash as if it had multiple surfaces.
“As I continued to view the two objects I watched a third that seemed to drop down from above my focus to an altitude similar to the other two objects and north of them again the three manoeuvred back into a horizontal line with quite a bit of distance between each other.
“After that manoeuvre, they then broke the line and moved closer to form a triangular formation and slowly moved out towards the ocean and then back towards my viewing position.
“After watching these slow manoeuvres for some time I noticed a fourth and fifth object materialising or moving from very high in the sky down towards the other objects and as these other two became about the same size as the others they all formed another horizontal line from north to south, evenly spaced, and kept that formation for a short while.”
Conspiracy theorists believed remains of UFO spacecrafts were stored at Area 51, and that government scientists were researching the remains to engineer the aliens technology
Then, at around 8pm the same day more than 2,000 miles away in Hollywood, Florida, there was another sighting of “numerous orange lights above the coastline,” by a law enforcement officer.
The witness said simply: “Numerous orange lights observed moving slowly above the ocean from north to south.
“All lights disappeared simultaneously.”
NUFORC was also sent video.
It said: “NUFORC is attempting to determine what the wind direction and velocity were at the time of the sighting, in attempt to rule out the possibility that the lights may have been sky lanterns, or so-called ‘Chinese’ lanterns.”
Chinese lanterns are often mistaken for UFOs as they drift in groups before disappearing as the internal flame goes out.
Mr Brando said the second sighting in Carlsbad was likely to be the same helium balloons travelling south.
He believes the objects seen in Florida were Chinese lanterns and unrelated.
According to historical accounts, Menes was the first pharaoh of the first dynasty, with whom the human history of Egypt began; He had been ‘implanted’ directly by the gods, to whom he was supposedly related.
Along with the unification of upper and lower Egypt, this historical feat also brought writing, art, agriculture and craft techniques to the land of the Pharaohs.
Obviously, such processes were much slower than that myth tells us; in particular, the political unification was the final result of long struggles to impose a central power on the decentralism of local communities. The last phase was the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt, that is, the unification of the valley and the delta of the Nile.
The latter was the work of Narmer, a pharaoh of Upper Egypt, who has been identified as the legendary mortal pharaoh Menes. Narmer appears represented crushing his enemies in the famous “Narmer Palette” also known as the Great Hierakonpolis Palette or the Palette of Narmer, found in Hierakonpolis.
The date commonly given for the beginning of Menes’ reign is 3100 BC.
Other major estimates that use both the historical method and radiocarbon dating place it in the range 3273—2320 BC.
This Palette contains what experts believe are the earliest hieroglyphic inscriptions ever found, and it depicts the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the king Narmer.
On one side of the Palette, we see the Pharaoh depicted with the bulbed White Crown of Upper Egypt. The other side of the stone depicts the king wearing the level Red Crown of Lower Egypt.
According to experts, the Narmer Palette provides one of the earliest known depictions of an Egyptian ruler.
In addition to the Narmer Palette, an ivory plaque excavated at Naqada bears both the names “Aha” and “Men” (Menes).
But despite the fact that Menes is proven to have existed, his true identity is a subject of debate, although the general Egyptologist consensus identifies Narmer with the pharaoh Menes of the I dynasty, who is also credited with the unification of Egypt as the first pharaoh. This conclusion is solely based on the above-mentioned palette.
Narmer or Menes?
History tells us they may have been one the same.
If we take a look at the work of Manetho, a 3rd-century-BCE Egyptian historian, we will find that he refers to Egypt’s first (mortal) pharaoh as Menes. Furthermore, the 5th-century-BCE Greek historian Herodotus referred to Menes as Min, and two native-king lists of the 19th dynasty (13th century BCE) call him Meni.
Modern scholars, however, have inconclusively identified the legendary Menes with one or more of the archaic Egyptian kings bearing the names Scorpion, Narmer, and Aha.
According to the Turin Papyrus and the History of Herodotus, he is also the founding father of Memphis—the capital of ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom
Ancient Egyptian priests told the Greek writer Herodotus – who considers himself the founder of history as a scientific discipline – that to build the city, Menes ordered to divert the Nile channel and build a dam.
One of the most amazing details about Menes’ reign was written down by Herodotus who claimed that Menes was responsible for the draining of the plain of Memphis and founding the Egyptian capital there. According to Manetho, Menes reigned for 62 years and was killed by a hippopotamus.
Menes is also believed to have introduced the worship of Gods and sacrifice to ancient Egypt.
If we take a look at the work of Pliny, we will see that he credit’s Menes as the bringer of wiring to ancient Egypt.
By comparing data from the 1st-ever Pluto flyby and a 1st-ever comet rendezvous mission, scientists developed what they call ‘the giant comet’ model of Pluto formation.
When the New Horizons spacecraft swept past the Pluto system in July 2015, it captured this image of a glacial expanse rich in nitrogen, carbon monoxide and methane ices. This is Sputnik Planitia. It forms the left lobe of the large, heart-shaped feature on Pluto’s surface.

The idea of smaller bodies in space sticking together to make larger ones isn’t new. In fact, Earth and the other major planets are thought to have formed in just that way, billions of years ago, after what astronomers call planetesimals – rocklike objects orbiting the young sun – began colliding with one another. So the idea of Pluto forming from a billion comets seems logical enough. After all, Pluto orbits in the outer solar system, where things are colder. The outer solar system is the realm of icy comets, still sometimes called dirty snowballs. Since the New Horizons spacecraft passed Pluto in July 2015, astronomers have had unprecedented data about this planet. That’s how two scientists from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Boulder, Colorado, were able to scrutinize this idea, developing what they call the giant comet cosmochemical model of Pluto formation.
The SwRI scientists used New Horizons’ data to take a hard look at Pluto’s composition. They compared what they learned about Pluto with data from a first-of-its kind comet mission, called Rosetta. In the Rosetta mission, a spacecraft accompanied a comet in its orbit around the sun for about two years.
Tombaugh Regio is the name for Pluto’s heart-shaped feature. Sputnik Planitia forms the heart’s left lobe.

The SwRI scientists looked specifically at the nitrogen-rich ice in a region of Pluto called Sputnik Planitia. That is the large glacier that forms the left lobe of the bright heart-shaped feature seen in New Horizon images. Christopher Gleinof SwRI, the new study’s lead author, commented in a statement:
We found an intriguing consistency between the estimated amount of nitrogen inside the glacier and the amount that would be expected if Pluto was formed by the agglomeration of roughly a billion comets or other Kuiper Belt objects similar in chemical composition to 67P, the comet explored by Rosetta.
He added:
Our research suggests that Pluto’s initial chemical makeup, inherited from cometary building blocks, was chemically modified by liquid water, perhaps even in a subsurface ocean.
For their new study, the scientists also investigated a possible model of Pluto’s formation, in which the dwarf planet formed from very cold ices with chemical composition more closely matching that of the sun than comets. They commented:
…the solar model also satisfies some constraints. While the research pointed to some interesting possibilities, many questions remain to be answered.
New Horizons gave us our first glimpse of Pluto when it swept past the planet in 2015. It also provided information on the composition of Pluto’s atmosphere and surface. These maps — assembled using New Horizons data — indicate regions rich in methane (CH4), nitrogen (N2), carbon monoxide (CO) and water (H2O) ices. Sputnik Planitia shows an especially strong signature of nitrogen near the equator. SwRI scientists combined these data with Rosetta’s comet 67P data to develop a proposed “giant comet” model for Pluto formation.

Bottom line: By comparing data from the 1st-ever Pluto flyby and a 1st-ever comet rendezvous mission, scientists developed what they call ‘the giant comet’ model of Pluto formation.
It’s often said that if you can remember the 60’s, you probably weren’t there. A similar adage may be true about another event: If you can remember seeing the EmDrive work, you probably weren’t there. That’s because the EmDrive doesn’t work, at least according to German scientists who attempted to recreate NASA’s “successful” experiment and showed that it couldn’t have worked because it’s impossible. When in the name of Nikolas Tesla and Newton’s Third Law of Motion did that ever stop anybody?
A corollary to the aforementioned EmDrive adage is: If you can explain it, you don’t understand it. In the simplest of terms, the EmDrive is a conical radio frequency (RF) resonant cavity thruster that was said to create propellantless propulsion by shooting microwaves inside the cone which pushed against the narrow front end and propelled the craft forward … to infinity and beyond. First designed by engineer Roger Sawyer in 2001, it challenged scientists (not to mention Newton’s Third Law of Motion) until 2014 when NASA claimed its Advanced Propulsion Physics Laboratory (Eagleworks Laboratories) had defeated “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” and created measurable propellantless thrust.
“Bull hockey!” (or some form of that) said everyone who believed Newton’s Law was one of the things holding our fragile universe together. ‘Everyone’ includes a team in Germany led by Martin Tajmar of the Institute of Aerospace Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden. They set out to either create their own better EmDrive or prove NASA wrong and Sir Isaac right. According to their paper, presented last week at the Space Propulsion 2018 conference held in Seville, Spain, the researchers followed NASA’s design, built an EmDrive called SpaceDrive, tested it in a vacuum and measured … something. Was it propellantless thrust?
NASA’s EmDrive
Rest easy, Sir Isaac.
“First measurement campaigns were carried out with both thruster models reaching thrust/thrust-to-power levels comparable to claimed values. However, we found that e.g. magnetic interaction from twisted-pair cables and amplifiers with the Earth’s magnetic field can be a significant error source for EMDrives.”
It was the cables! Tajmar’s team determined that what NASA detected and thought to be propellantless thrust from the EmDrive was actually just a reaction between the EmDrive’s twisted-pair cables and Earth’s magnetic field. What is the German word for ‘Gotcha!’?
So German space travelers won’t be flying to infinity and beyond in an EmDrive-powered spacecraft anytime soon. However, the team made sure to point out to their investors and donors that the project was not a total loss.
“At least, SpaceDrive is an excellent educational project by developing highly demanding test setups, evaluating theoretical models and possible experimental errors. It’s a great learning experience with the possibility to find something that can drive space exploration into its next generation.”
