Marsjeep Curiosity vindt organisch materiaal op Rode Planeet dat kan wijzen op buitenaards leven - HLN.be

Marsverkenner Curiosity speurt al bijna zes jaar de Rode Planeet af, op zoek naar wetenschappelijke informatie over Mars. Het ultieme resultaat zou zijn dat het bestaan van aliens zou bewezen worden, aan de hand van onder meer de analyse van bodemstalen. 

Nu is er alvast in een meerbedding organisch materiaal gevonden dat eventueel op het bestaan van buitenaards leven op Mars zou kunnen wijzen. Ooit, in het verleden. Daarnaast blijken de hoeveelheden methaan in de atmosfeer per seizoen te verschillen. Dit gas is op aarde voor 95 procent een afvalstof geproduceerd door levende organismen. De wetenschappers van NASA vinden het nog te vroeg om te besluiten dat dat ook het geval zou zijn op Mars. In dat geval zou er nu nog altijd leven op de Rode Planeet kunnen zijn. De bevindingen worden morgen in het vakblad Science gepubliceerd.

Vandaag is de Marsbodem onbewoonbaar, maar toen de planeet nog warmer en natter was, bevond zich in de Galekrater, waar de Curiosity zijn boringen doet, een groot meer. Uit gegevens van Curiosity blijkt dat miljarden jaren geleden dat meer in de Galekrater alle ingrediënten bevatte die nodig waren voor het leven, inclusief chemische bouwstenen en energiebronnen. Zo vond de Marsjeep in de afzettingsgesteenten van zo’n 3 miljard jaar oud op amper 5 cm diepte drie verschillende soorten organische moleculen. 

Organische moleculen bevatten koolstof en waterstof en kunnen ook zuurstof, stikstof en andere elementen bevatten. Hoewel ze vaak geassocieerd worden met het leven, kunnen ze ook worden aangemaakt door niet-biologische processen en zijn ze dus niet noodzakelijk indicatoren van leven. “Curiosity heeft de bron van de organische moleculen niet bepaald”, verduidelijkt Jen Eigenbrode van NASA. Ook voor het seizoensgebonden methaan bestaan er niet-biologische verklaringen.

Nog altijd geen ultiem bewijs van leven op Mars dus, maar volgens NASA zijn de bevindingen zeker een goed teken voor toekomstige missies om op de oppervlakte en wat dieper dan nu te zoeken naar sporen van leven op de Rode Planeet.

New hint of life on Mars as NASA reveals "seasonal variance" that may be sign of ancient alien life

NASA's Mars-based Curiosity rover collected measurements over three Martian years - 55 Earth months

NASA has revealed that methane present in the atmosphere of Mars appears to vary at different points in the year.

This "seasonal variance" is believed to be due to the fact the methane is released by subsurface water-based crystals.

As the temperature rises and falls during Mars' orbit around the sun, it speeds up and slows down the release of methane from these crystals.

The atmospheric measurements were collected over three Martian years (55 Earth months) by NASA's Mars-based Curiosity rover before being analysed by scientists at the space agency.

"The data reveal that background methane levels on the Red Planet have a strong seasonal cycle, ranging between 0.24 to 0.65 parts per billion, peaking near the end of summer in the Northern hemisphere (end of winter in the Southern hemisphere)," NASA said in a press release.

On Earth, the majority of methane comes from biological processes - such as cattle manure - but on Mars the methane crystals are reckoned to be trapped in carbon-bearing organic molecules that could be billions of years old.

These molecules were discovered after analysing drill samples of soil taken from Mars' surface.

"Tools on board the Curiosity rover extracted the new samples and heated them, analyzing the molecules that were released," NASA said.

"The data reveal the presence of several organic molecules and volatiles reminiscent of organic-rich sedimentary rock found on Earth.

"Indeed, a comparison of these samples to organic traces in Martian meteorites also suggests that the former are derived from larger organic molecules.

Other studies on soil surrounding the Gale Crater in Mars' northern hemisphere show extremely high levels of sulphur which could play a part in preserving the organic molecules for so long.

The space agency has previously refused to rule out that methane present on Mars could be an indicator of ancient alien life.

NASA scientist Dr Paul Mahaffy said in 2014: "We don’t want to eliminate anything and potentially it could indicate life or evidence of ancient methane trapped which could show ancient life.”

Curiosity has been exploring the 96-mile wide, 3.8-billion-year-old Gale Crater on Mars since 2012.

While satellites have spotted unusual methane plumes before, none have been as pronounced as those in the crater.

But some experts cautioned against jumping to the conclusion of life on Mars.

John Grotzinger, a scientist on the Curiosity team, said the detection of methane “is not an argument that we have found evidence of life on Mars, but it’s one of the few hypotheses that we can propose that we must consider”.

The question of whether there is, or was, life on Mars may finally be answered by the second part of the European Space Agency's ExoMars mission, which will land a 300kg rover on the Red Planet in 2020.

Here Are NASA’s Unreleased Apollo Mission Images They Don’t Want You To See

The idea that NASA has encountered Alien life during the Apollo missions has aroused the curiosity of thousands of experts in the field for decades.

Ever since NASA successfully landed on the moon, people have wondered whether or not the astronauts on the lunar surface—and during their trip to the moon—witnessed things they couldn’t rationally explain.

In other words; Alien spaceships and structures on the moon’s surface.

These questions were quickly turned into a conspiracy theory, and people who argue that the Apollo astronauts witnessed inexplicable things during their trip to the moon were called out as conspiracy nuts.

To date, the United States is the only country to have successfully conducted manned missions to the surface of Moon, with the last Apollo mission departing the lunar surface in December 1972.

For nearly half a century—46 years to be precise—space agencies around the globe have avoided going to the moon.

But why?

Was it due to extremely high costs? Risks? Or is it that the moon is simply not an interesting place?

The truth is that today, 46 years after the last successful moon landing we have much better technology than we had 46 years ago.

Money isn’t an issue, for we always find money for things we want and need.

The moon is perhaps one of the most interesting places in the solar system, and numerous experts have claimed it is imperative for humans to establish a colony on the lunar surface.

So, what’s keeping us from landing on the moon?

A man called Bob Dean may answer the above question.

Mr. Dean is retired US Army Command Sergeant Major who served for 28 years.

He has given a number of interesting lectures, providing a wealth of information about not only the moon landings, Apollo missions, but also corroborating what numerous whistleblowers have said in the past.

During the Barcelona Exopolitics Summit, on July 25, 2009, Mr. Dean released a set of amazing images. He also explained the Apollo missions, and what astronauts encountered unlike anyone before him.

During the summit, Mr. Dean released to the public a set of fascinating images supposedly captured by astronauts of the Apollo 12 mission, including an image showing mysterious spacecraft several hundred feet in diameter.

During the lecture, Mr. Dean recounts how on the morning of the 2nd of February 1961, World War III almost began, and a fleet of unidentified flying objects were to blame:

“It appears that on the morning of the 2nd of February 1961, World War III almost started. It was involved in the flyover of large numbers of circular metallic craft, flying in formation, very obviously under intelligent control,” said Mr. Dean during the lecture.

Mr. Dean continued: “They would fly out of the Soviet sector in the Warsaw Pact toward the U.S. in formation at a high speed and at a very high altitude. They would turn north over the English Channel over the southern coast of England and then they would disappear off of NATO radar over the Norwegian Sea.”

“The Soviets went on red alert. The NATO forces went on red alert. Everybody was, you know … fingers on their triggers, thumbs poised above those red buttons. And World War III was just moments away,” explained Mr. Dean. “Within 20 minutes, it was all over. The objects flew, turned north and disappeared off of radar.”

Soon after the mysterious sighting that nearly triggered WWIII, a study of the occurred took place.

Experts concluded how “…planet Earth and the human race had been under some kind of survey or observation going on for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. They concluded, in 1964, that there were at least four different groups coming here, observing us, surveying us, analyzing us, closely watching us, what we were up to, what we were doing. They concluded that it did not appear to be a military threat involved, because their repeated demonstrations of incredibly advanced technology demonstrated to us that, if they had been hostile or malevolent, there was absolutely nothing we could do. If they were evil in their intent and they were hostile toward us, it would have been over a long time ago.”

“…the conclusion was there were four different groups involved,” explained Mr. Dean.

This image comes from the Apollo 12 mission, Apollo Systems 12, roll number 50, negative number 7348. A mysterious object was sighted by Apollo astronauts as they were orbiting the moon.

The image seen below was taken by Astronaut Neil Armstrong. While the astronauts were looking out of the window of their little craft, this cigar-shaped object flew by.

The next image, says Mr. Dean, shows a mysterious disc-shaped object with several hundred feet in diameter. It was snapped while astronauts made their way to the surface of the moon.

The next two images were taken by Apollo Astronauts when they were overflying the so-called Lansberg crater. According to Mr. Dean; “The astronauts in orbit above the Moon were particularly fascinated by the Lansberg crater. They had been given a special designation to take pictures of Lansberg, because the crater, which they named as the Lansberg, had things going on that were very anomalous. There was construction going on. There were gigantic facilities in the crater up there. So they were specifically delegated and assigned to photograph Lansberg to see if they could figure out what the hell was going on down there. While they were looking at Lansberg, this object happened to express interest in them and flew by. Now this line is an artificial line that was drawn to show you the … it gave the direction that this object was going. This is a good-size object flying past the Apollo Lander.”

Are these mysterious spots alien structures on the lunar surface?

Mr. Dean continued showing evidence gathered by astronauts from the Apollo 13 mission. The below image, says Mr. Dean, where taken as Apollo 13 astronauts were traveling to the moon when a number of things began happening. Some strange objects were appearing outside the windows of the spacecraft, so the Apollo 13 Astronauts grabbed their Hasselblad cameras and started taking pictures of what they had seen.

Interdimensional beings, Aliens From “Dimensions” That Coexist Alongside Our Own?

The definition for interdimensional beings or interdimensional intelligence is usually described as a theoretical or ‘real’ entity that exists in a dimension beyond our own.

Despite the fact that such beings are believed to exist only in science fiction, fantasy and the supernatural, there are numerous Ufologists who refer to them as real beings.

The Interdimensional Hypothesis

The interdimensional hypothesis was proposed by a number of Ufologists like Jacques Vallée who suggests that unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and related events (such as alien sightings) imply visits from beings from other “realities” or “dimensions” that coexist separately with ours. Some have referred to these beings as visitors from another universe.

In other words, Vallée and other authors suggest that aliens are real but exist not in our dimension, but in another reality, that coexists with our own.

This theory is an alternative to the extraterrestrial hypothesis which suggests that aliens are advanced spacefaring beings that exist in our universe.

The interdimensional hypothesis argues that UFOs are a modern manifestation of a phenomenon that has occurred throughout recorded human history, which in earlier times was attributed to mythological or supernatural creatures—Ancient Astronaut theory.

What if Aliens are travelers from another dimension? Does that mean we are alone in the universe after all?

But despite the fact that modern Ufologists and millions of people around the globe believe we are not alone in this universe, many ufologists and paranormal researchers have embraced the interdimensional Hypothesis, suggesting that it explains the Alien theory in a much smoother way.

Paranormal investigator Brad Steiger wrote that “we are dealing with a multidimensional paraphysical phenomenon that is largely originating from planet Earth.”

Other ufologists, such as John Ankerberg and John Weldon, who also favor the interdimensional hypothesis argue that UFO sightings fit in the spiritualist phenomenon.

Commenting on the disparity between the Extraterrestrial hypothesis and the reports that people have made of UFO encounters, Ankerberg and Weldon wrote that “the UFO phenomenon simply does not behave like extraterrestrial visitors.”

This Interdimensional Hypothesis took a step further in the book UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse published in 1970, where author John Keel linked UFOs to supernatural concepts such as ghosts and demons.

Some advocates of the extraterrestrial theory have embraced some of the ideas set forth by the Interdimensional Hypothesisbecause it does a better job explaining how ‘aliens’ could travel in space across vast distances.

The distance between the stars makes interstellar travel impractical using conventional means and since no one has demonstrated an antigravity engine or any other machine that would allow a traveler to move across the cosmos at speed faster than light, the Interdimensional Hypothesis makes much more sense.

Are aliens, in fact, interdimensional travelers?

According to this theory, is not necessary to use any method of propulsion because it maintains that UFOs are not spacecraft, but devices that travel between different realities. However, they still need to get from one reality to the other, right?

One of the benefits of the Interdimensional Hypothesis according to Hilary Evans—a British pictorial archivist, author, and researcher into UFOs and other paranormal phenomena—is that it can explain the apparent ability of UFOs to appear and disappear, not only from sight but from radar; as the interdimensional UFO’s can enter and leave our dimension at will, meaning they have the ability to materialize and dematerialize.

On the other hand, Evans argues that if the other dimension is slightly more advanced than ours, or is perhaps our own future, this would explain the tendency of UFOs to represent technologies close to the future.

While all of the above may sound like something coming from a sci-fi movie, there is a peculiar declassified top-secret document in the FBI archives which speaks of interdimensional beings, and how their ‘spacecraft’ have the ability to materialize and dematerialize in our own dimension.

Artificial structure on Mars—three-sided Pyramid—verified in Science Journal

Mars, the red planet, has always fascinated mankind. For centuries have we pondered about the possibility if there is life on Mars, or if there ever was?

Now, the Cydonia Institute for Martian research has released more stunning images of supposed artificial structures on the Martian Surface, which make us question everything we have been taught about Mars in the past.

From Pyramidal structures to enigmatic shapes on the Martian surface that hints at possible intelligent design, Mars may have been the home of an advanced civilization billions of years ago.

Their latest discovery was presented by Founding investigator, George Haas, and geoscientist Bill Saunders who talked about the artificial structures and how SETI researchers acknowledge their findings in a recent interview with coast-to-coast.

A Three-sided Pyramid on Mars

As noted by experts in their study (click here) there is a three-sided pyramidal formation in the Candor Chasma region of Mars.

The formation is clearly seen in five NASA images snapped by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft.

In the study, Haas, Sunders, Miller, and Dale suggest the images from Mars reveal defining aspects of the formations three-sided Reuleaux geometry, exposing a uniform symmetry in its three, triangular faces.

A Pyramid on Mars, the result of intelligent design?

The idea that Mars was inhabited in the distant past by intelligent civilizations has captivated the imagination of countless philosophers in ancient times, and scientists in modern times.

Now, as technology evolves and as we have the opportunity to explore Mars like never before, we are seeing ‘structures’ on Mars that question whether or not we are alone in the universe.

In the study, a geologist and a geoscientist examine natural mechanisms that could contribute to the creation of the pyramidal formation and a claim of intelligent construction is proposed.

An extensive search of comparable regions within and beyond the area of Candor Chasma was conducted and terrestrial comparisons are also offered.

In fact, the Pyramid investigated by researchers from the Cydonia Institute caught the attention of world-renowned astronomer Carl Sagan more than 40 years ago.

Sagan, intrigued by the shape of the pyramidal structure on Mars, decided to present the image at the Royal Institution in London during his Christmas Lecture in 1977.

Furthermore, Sagan also featured the image in his 1980 book and television series Cosmos in which he made the following comment;

“The largest Mars Pyramids have a base width of 3 km and a height of 1 km, so they are much larger than the Pyramids of Sumer, Egypt, and Mexico. With the ancient eroded shape, they could be small hills, sandblasted for centuries, but they need to be viewed from nearby.”

Researchers conclude in their study: “We contend that the structural form of this three-sided pyramid observed within the western region of Candor Chasma is real and exhibits a level of geometry and symmetry that supports a high probability of artificial origins. We recommend that both NASA and the imaging team at the University of Arizona direct the current Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft acquire addition images of this anomalous surface feature.

Les photos de “fossiles extraterrestres” douteux ont été prises par le Rover Spirit de la NASA le 648e jour martien de sa mission (Sol 648).

Le Spirit Rover de la NASA a atterri sur Mars en 2004 et a été actif jusqu’en 2010.

The curious case of Jupiter’s lightning, solved by the Juno craft

Lightning bolts on Jupiter are both similar and completely different from those on Earth, research suggests.

A new paper published by NASA’s Juno mission comes to flesh out our understanding of Jovian lightning. Their existence was first confirmed when the Voyager 1 craft flew past Jupiter in March 1979 — but that encounter also left us with more unanswered questions. Radio emissions produced by these lightning bolts didn’t match the signatures of those on Earth, for example.

“No matter what planet you’re on, lightning bolts act like radio transmitters—sending out radio waves when they flash across a sky,” said lead author Shannon Brown of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“But until Juno, all the lightning signals recorded by spacecraft were limited to either visual detections or from the kilohertz range of the radio spectrum, despite a search for signals in the megahertz range. Many theories were offered up to explain it, but no one theory could ever get traction as the answer.”

Fancy science-speak for ‘we didn’t have a clue what was up’. The Juno mission, however, gave researchers a chance to dig deeper into Jupiter’s lightning. The craft has been orbiting the gas giant since July 4, 2016. Among other onboard equipment, it boasted a Microwave Radiometer Instrument (MWR) to record emissions across a wide spectrum of frequencies

During its first eight flybys of Jupiter, Juno detected 377 lightning discharges, the team reports. Emissions were recorded in both the megahertz and gigahertz range, “which is what you can find with terrestrial lightning emissions,” according to Brown.

“We think the reason we are the only ones who can see it is because Juno is flying closer to the lighting than ever before, and we are searching at a radio frequency that passes easily through Jupiter’s ionosphere,” she adds.

These recordings show that lightning on Jupiter is very similar to that on Earth — but there are also differences.

Most striking of all is how these discharges are distributed across the planet’s surface. On Jupiter, these bolts of lightning flash frequently across the giant’s poles, but never over the equator. This doesn’t hold true on Earth. The reason behind this, the team believes, is how heat is distributed across the two planets.

The overwhelming majority of heat on Earth comes from the Sun. Our equator receives a much larger slice of this energy than the rest of the planet (that’s why it’s the hottest bit), meaning air masses above the equator have a lot of energy at their disposal to move around through convection. This movement is what fuels the thunderstorms which, in turn, produce lightning.

On Jupiter, however, sunlight is much, much dimmer. The giant is, after all, five times farther away from the Sun than Earth. This means the planet receives 25 times less heat than our planet. Most of the energy in Jupiter’s atmosphere is derived from its solid core. However, the team explains, that tiny quantity of heat it does receive from the Sun does heat up its equator more than the poles. The team believes that this difference in temperature is enough to stabilize Jupiter’s upper atmosphere around the equator, preventing gases further below to rise through convection.

The atmosphere around Jupiter’s poles, which receive less energy, isn’t stable — warm gases rising from below drive convection processes, creating lightning.

“These findings could help to improve our understanding of the composition, circulation and energy flows on Jupiter,” said Brown. But another question looms, she said. “Even though we see lightning near both poles, why is it mostly recorded at Jupiter’s north pole?”

The paper “Prevalent lightning sferics at 600 megahertz near Jupiter’s poles” has been published in the journal Nature.

In the late spring and early summer, Jupiter is one of the most prominent objects appearing in the night sky. Appearing vivid and bright on any clear evening, it rises in the east and follows a westerly course throughout the nighttime hours, receding beyond the horizon to the west prior to dawn.

Stargazing apps will find it easily, although the casual observer can hardly miss Jupiter’s bright, off-white appearance (as an added tip, remember when looking for planets that you can spot them easily not only due to their brightness, but the lack of sparkling scintillation stars have from being a greater distance away). And while Jupiter is one of the most impressive features in the night sky, it is bright enough that it can occasionally be viewed even in daylight, if one knows where to look.

Some keen observers have also claimed to be able to see Jupiter’s moons with the naked eye, a claim which, admittedly, would require near perfect visible conditions (and extremely good vision). Nonetheless, observation through a telescope is far more lucrative, allowing the Galilean satellites to become easily discernible as points of light gleaming like a pearl necklace encircling the planet system’s greater body.

Over the years, a number of unique observations have been made of Jupiter’s moons. For instance, in the late 1970s W.E. Fox was first to write about the strange appearance of double shadows cast by Jupiter’s moons onto the planet’s surface when passing between it and the sun; in some instances, even triple shadows were observed. Fox discussed these anomalous shadows in an article for the British Astronomical Association Journal in 1978 while offering no explanation for this mystery.

The shadows cast onto Jupiter’s surface are not the only mysteries associated with Jupiter’s moons. Of all the planet’s natural satellites, Io may be the most intriguing (seen passing before Jupiter in the photo at the top of this post, as seen from the Cassini probe in 2001), due to an unusual illuminative phenomenon it produces in the minutes following a planetary eclipse. Specifically, for an estimated 15 minutes after the eclipse occurs, Io appears brighter after emerging from the shadow of Jupiter.

Writing for the journal Icarus in 1973, astronomers D.P.Cruikshank and Robert Murphy reported on the phenomenon, noting that, “A post-eclipse anomaly of approximately 0.07 mag was observed on two occasions in 1972, while observations of Europa and Ganymede showed no brightness anomaly greater than 0.01 mag.” While a variety of possible causes are reviewed, Cruikshank and Murphy note that, “The observational data and the results from a stellar occultation are in general accord with the theoretical predictions of the stability of heavy gases on Io, while both observational and theoretical criteria are satisfied by a tenuous atmosphere of a heavy gas such as methane or ammonia having a surface pressure ∼10−7 bar.”

There are other theories about Io’s post-eclipse radiance, one suggesting that a “thermoluminescent effect” may be in the works, occurring when Jupiter’s atmosphere excites Io’s terrain that is suddenly heated as it emerges from the shadow, causing a temporary brightening. Another idea involves sulfurous frost that coats darker areas of the moon while shielded from the sunlight, which cause the surface to become more reflective as the satellite emerges from Jupiter’s shadow.

Another anomalous phenomenon associated with Io involves the violent volcanic eruptions it hosts, which are known to eject molten material as high as 250 kilometers. Astronomers and physicists have long wondered about whether there could be an explanation for these violent outbursts, and an intriguing theory was proposed in 1979 by Cornell astrophysicist Thomas Gold, who suggested that the Jovian moon’s volcanic activity might actually have its basis in electricity.

According to Gold, Io in its orbit occasionally “short circuits” the current of Jupiter’s ring system (that’s right, Jupiter has rings, although they are far fainter than those of other planets, most notably Saturn). Gold estimated that Io, when passing through the ring current, could attain an electrical current nearing 5 million amperes, resulting in eruptions on the planet that are actually electrical arcing, rather than purely the result of subsurface heat and pressure.

Jupiter’s prevalence in the night sky is only some of the reasons the planet continues to fascinate us. However, as we see here, a deeper look at its moons (and their unusual mechanics in relation to Jupiter itself) reminds us that there are still many mysteries about our universe we have yet to unravel.

Here’s my third and final article (well, for now, at least…) on how and why we need to be so very careful when it comes to addressing and investigating tales of UFOs that have fallen to Earth. This one deals with a case that has been championed by quite a few UFO researchers, but which may actually have had completely down to earth origins. We are talking about a puzzle that dates back to 1957. It was midway through September of that year when a man named Ibrahim Sued became the recipient of a strange and controversial tale. It dealt with the explosion in the skies of Brazil of nothing less than a circular-shaped UFO. In other words, a Flying Saucer.

As a journalist on O Globo – a Brazilian newspaper – Sued decided to look deeper into the matter, primarily to see if there was any truth to the claims. Or, if it was someone’s idea of a big joke. According to the unknown letter-writer, the location was Ubatuba, Brazil. Part of the letter sent to Sued read as follows. The Flying Saucer, Sued read,  exploded into  “thousands of fiery fragments, which fell sparkling with magnificent brightness… most of these fragments, almost all, fell into the sea. But a number of small pieces fell close to the beach and we picked up a large amount of this material, which was as light as paper. I am enclosing a sample of it.”

Researcher John Harney has taken an interest in the matter of the Ubatuba affair and that intriguing “sample.” He says: “The material was given a spectrographic analysis and the report merely indicated that this showed the presence of magnesium of a high degree of purity and absence of any other metallic element.”

All of which brings us to what was termed the Condon Committee. Of the committee, Micah Hanks writes: “By the mid 1960s, the USAF was getting to a point of being content with dropping the entire matter, should an element manage to come along that would provide a vehicle for cleansing its hands. That vehicle did eventually arrive, in what became know as the Condon Committee, headed by University of Colorado physicist Edward U. Condon (pictured above). For many, Condon and his team’s final report on UFOs was the ultimate death nail in serious UFO studies, with a number of researchers since its issuance claiming that Condon had completely lacked objectivity, and had perhaps even conspired to demolish the credibility of UFO research by scientific institutions altogether.”

It turns out that the Condon Committee, at one point, was given access to a sample of the material which rained down on Ubatuba, and which was said to have been pure magnesium. The committee members reported: “Although the Brazilian fragment proved not to be pure, as claimed, the possibility remained that the material was unique.” It also exhibited a high degree of strontium. This excited the ufologists of the day. But, the Condon Committee was careful to note that finding strontium in magnesium was nothing new. In fact, Dow Chemicals had, as far back as 1940, manufactured magnesium which exhibited significant strontium, and which had nothing to do with UFOs and aliens.

Now, yes, as we have seen from Micah Hanks’ words, the ufologists of the day were significantly suspicious of Edward Condon and his committee. But, the fact is that, in this case, the Condon Committee did investigate the Ubatba incident – their files fully reflect that – but came away positively underwhelmed. That was not what ufologists wanted to hear. But, it’s definitely what they got.

There is another important issue, too, which definitely needs addressing. As ufologist Kevin Randle notes: “…the magnesium samples that allegedly came from an exploding UFO cannot be traced to the beach in Brazil where they were recovered. Instead, they can be traced to the columnist in Brazil who first reported the case in the newspaper and that alerted Dr. Olavo Fontes…the APRO Brazilian representative to the crash. No one has ever come forward, nor has anyone been located, who can corroborate the tale told in the letter to the columnist nor who actually saw the explosion or the UFO.”

In other words, we actually have no proof at all that anything exploded over Ubatuba, back in 1957. We have the words of an anonymous source that no-one ever located. And, we have evidence that the sample was something that could clearly be found right here on Earth. Should we dismiss this strange and enduring saga? Probably, yes.

As a follow-up to my earlier article, “UFOs and a ‘highly classified group,'” I thought I would share with you a couple more stories that demonstrate how very careful we have to be when it comes to the matter of analyzing alleged crashed UFO cases. That aforementioned article suggested that the 1952 story in question may have had far less to do with real crashed UFO materials, and far more to do with a secret program to convince the Soviets – in the early years of the Cold War – that the U.S. Government had recovered highly advanced alien technology. When, in reality, it may well have recovered nothing of the sort. Mind-games designed to confuse and concern the Russians may have been the primary goal.

There is another aspect to the matter of tales of crashed UFOs and how such tales often turn out to be something else entirely. I live in Arlington, Texas, which is about a 130 mile-drive to Wichita Falls. And, I get a lot of stories from people who have had UFO encounters in the Lone Star State. There is a reason why I mention that. More than a few years ago, I interviewed a woman who told me how her father, in the early 1980s, had told her of his involvement in the recovery of a crashed UFO somewhere in the Wichita Falls area, in the latter part of 1960. The woman was only in her teens when she was told of the incident, and much of it was hazy by the time it reached my ears. But, the data available to me suggested that we might have been dealing with something quite significant. In a way, it was significant, as you will soon see.

Over the years, I have taken a deep interest in a U.S. military program called Project Moon Dust (also referred to in some official documents as Moondust). A product of the Cold War, Project Moon Dust was created to secretly recover the likes of Soviet missiles that had gone astray, the remains of Russian space-satellites, rocket-boosters, and more. In other words, it was an operation designed to secure foreign technology for the U.S. military.

Some of the Moon Dust documents refer to UFOs, and the need to recover them. This has given rise to a theory, within Ufology, that Moon Dust was comprised of an elite unit of personnel whose role it was to secretly retrieve the remains of spaceships from other worlds, even their extraterrestrial crews. If, however, you take a good look at all of the presently available documents on Moon Dust (as I have), it becomes clear that the term “UFO” was used in literal terms by the team: objects that, for a while at least, remained unidentified. That is, until they were identified as Russian technology, and in some cases even Chinese.

It turns out that one of the many, now-declassified Moon Dustpapers describes the crash of something which came down at Wichita Falls in late 1960 – which sounds very much like the same story told to me. The date of the document is October 11, 1960. The document was sent to the Director, Special Investigations, Headquarters USAF, Washington 25, D.C. It states the following:

“Reference is made to telephonic spot report from this district office of 28 September 1960, referred to AFCSI-6D, concerning a Moon Dust report in the vicinity of Wichita Falls, Texas, on 28 September 1960. On 4 October 1960, the Assistant Provost Marshal at Sheppard AFB, Texas, Major CARTER O. COOPER, advised that an ATIC Team from the 1127^th USAF Field Activities Group, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, headed by a Capt ALEXANDER had investigated the incident. According to Major COOPER, the evaluations of the ATIC team could not be released at this local level; however, he said he had been informed unofficially that examination of recovered fragments indicated the incident did not come within the Moon Dust category.”

The document continues: “Maj E. J. GALAINI, 4245^th Strategic Wing (SAC), Sheppard AFB, Texas, received a report at 0425 hours on 28 September 1960 from an unknown source to the effect that an unidentified flying object (UFO) had crashed some five (5) or eight (8) miles west of Wichita Falls, Texas. Sheppard AFB Air Police conducted investigation at the scene and also learned that the reported incident had been observed by several civilian police officers of the Wichita Falls Police Department.”

We are further told: “At the scene, miscellaneous charred debris, including shreds of a parachute, reportedly was recovered and maintained in custody of the Sheppard AFB Provost Marshal. Major COOPER, who came to Sheppard AFB from an assignment involving work related to Moon Dust, made a personal evaluation.”

Yes, there was that charred debris. And, yes, there were indeed portions of what was clearly regular, normal parachute material. But, nothing else. Speculation suggested that perhaps a military device had gone astray, maybe even an American device.  So, we have something that, in the documentation, was referred to as a “UFO,” but which clearly had down to earth origins. And, years later, in the early 1980s, one of the team told his daughter a tale of the day that dad was involved in the recovery of a UFO. Which was absolutely true in the literal sense. But, that didn’t make the UFO an alien spacecraft.

Back then, the term “UFO” was often used to describe probable Soviet technology that was still being studied. And, when it was identified, it was no longer a UFO. Ufologists would do well to remember this:  what “UFO” means to us, doesn’t always mean the same for the U.S. military.

Wetenschappers zijn nog steeds bezig de mysteries van higgsboson te ontrafelen, maar kijken ook reeds uit naar een presentatie morgen in Heidelberg. Er doen immers geruchten de ronde dat er in het Fermilab in de VS ook aanwijzingen van het bestaan van een verondersteld deeltje zijn gevonden: het steriele neutrino. Neutrino’s, die geen elektrische lading hebben, interacteren slechts zeer zwak met andere elementaire deeltjes, waardoor ze ook de bijnaam “spookdeeltjes” kregen. Zij kunnen ook oscilleren - lees “van gedaante wisselen” - in drie verschillende vormen, of in het jargon “smaken”: het elektron-neutrino, het muon-neutrino en het tau-neutrino.

Maar er is ook een vierde smaak geopperd: het steriele neutrino. De drie bestaande neutrino’s interacteren enkel via de zwakke kernkracht (een van de fundamentele krachten in het universum) en gravitatie. Het steriele neutrino zou primair met gravitatie interacteren.

Nieuwe theorie nodig

Natuurkundigen van het MiniBooNe-experiment in het Fermilab hebben nu een anomalie bevestigd in experimenten die bedoeld waren om neutrino-oscillaties te onderzoeken. En die anomalie zou te verklaren zijn door het bestaan van een vierde neutrino, het steriele neutrino. De gevolgen zijn zeer groot. Het Standaardmodel volstaat immers niet meer om alles te verklaren, en er is nieuwe theorie nodig.

Het deeltje kan ook een rol hebben gespeeld in het ontstaan van de kosmos, en kan een verklaring vormen voor de mysterieuze donkere materie in het universum. De steriele neutrino’s zijn dan kandidaat-deeltjes van de donkere materie.

Ring of Fire: Guatemala Eruption 'Like Pompeii'

At the moment there are 20 volcanoes erupting around the world, most are concentrated in the Ring of Fire and it seems the situation is getting worse.

Besides that the Merapi and Sinanbung volcanoes erupt in Indonesia, with the on going eruptions in Hawaii, the situation in Hawaii is not getting any better, a USGS time-lapse of the Kilauea summitreveals a 1500 yard section that's 400 yards wide make a significant shift downwards which is a major move.

Meanwhile Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted violently on Sunday, prompting deadly pyroclastic flows which buried rural areas and today the volcano has erupted again.

The death toll from the eruption of the Fuego volcano in Guatemala has risen to 69. The volcano began erupting Sunday, sending columns of smoke and ash 10 km into the air, killing dozens by engulfing them in floods of searing ash and mud.

At least 1.7mn people have been affected by the volcano’s sudden violent activity, with more than 3,200 people forced to flee their homes.

And today the Fuego volcano has erupted again setting off new evacuations and alarm as rescuers continue to search for survivors

UFO Sightings On Gympie

As we all know we are still curious whether we are alone in this universe or not for decades now.

It goes beyond our limit of understanding. The experts and enthusiasts have long debated the existence of UFO. Until now we are still hearing different gossips about UFOs being sighted here and there. For decades the answers to our questions are still unknown.

Gympie is one of the places that UFOs are being sighted. One of the sightings happened in June 2017 wherein an anonymous man claimed that he saw a mysterious flying object high above the town.

The mad said that it was around 11 to 11:30 in the morning when he saw the object. At first glance, it was hard to make out the shape of the object, and its movements were languid and very deliberately.

According to the man, it made a path somewhere around where Widgee would be before going south and back again. When the object tried to turn in place at a certain point, the witness saw its triangular shape and a metallic body with the glowing lights.

The man was not convinced of what he saw. Could this be one of the proof that we are not alone?

Another sighting that occurred in Gympie was on June 2015 when James Loose was annoyed when he captured an unusual purple light with his camera. Then after this picture was posted on Facebook to answer his query, it was later said that the light was a stationary, north-west and twinkling about 35 degrees above the horizon.

For almost three years the source of light that was captured still can’t be determined.

On October 2013, a resident named Wayne Kuskopf claimed that he saw an extraterrestrial after he glimpsed a brightly coloured object in the night sky from his kitchen.

According to Mr Kuskopf, he immediately thought it was a UFO after seeing a circle of red lights with a pale green centre. He said it was hanging above the top of the mountain and remained still for a while before moving westward towards Woolooga and shrinking the whole time.

It was his first time to see things like that, but according to his neighbours, they had seen something similar before.

Witness report:

 I was at work after Prenoitar, (spending the night) in this town (Vila little de Aguiar-Portugal). This morning, we get ready to start the service, changing the advertising panels by the road. While on a break, I took three pictures in the position from right to left, my attention was aroused by a cloud-shaped line by the mountain and below the level of it. In the middle from the valley, I shot 3 to 4 photos. On the last already on the left side appears the object, which I only detected later when I transfered it to my computer.
