Army Of Miniaturized Terracotta Warriors Discovered Guarding 2,100-Year-Old Chinese Prince’s Tomb
A 2,100-year-old pit containing a mini "Terracotta Army" has been discovered in China.
Army Of Miniaturized Terracotta Warriors Discovered Guarding 2,100-Year-Old Chinese Prince’s Tomb
A 2,100-year-old pit discovered in China was found to contain not only chariots and miniature statues of cavalry, horses, watchtowers, infantry, civil officials and musicians, but at its center was a scaled down version of the famous “Terracotta Army.”
“The pit, along with several other archaeological sites, was discovered in the winter of 2007 during construction work” and was excavated by the Cultural Relics Agency of Linzi District of Zibo city. According to an article in Live Science archaeologists from this agency teamed up with researchers from the Shandong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and they published a report journal Wenwu, recently translated into English and published in the journal Chinese Cultural Relics .
A Miniature Force for the Afterlife
The southern part of the pit was found to have been filled with:
“formations of cavalry and chariots with models of watchtowers that stand 55 inches (140 centimeters) high and at the pit's center… 300 infantrymen stand alert in a square formation, while the northern part of the pit has a model of a theatrical pavilion holding small sculptures of musicians.”
The archaeologists noted that the newly discovered soldiers are smaller than those in the Terracotta Army and that the infantry sculptures are between 9 and 12 inches (22 and 31 cm) tall, much shorter that the famous life-size soldiers buried near the tomb of the First Emperor.
The miniatures include cavalry, horses and watchtowers.
Based on “the date, size and location of the pit,” archaeologists believe it might been built for Liu Hong, a prince of Qi (a part of China), who was the son of Emperor Wu (reign 141–87 BC).” Based in Linzi, near the pit, Hong died in 110 BC without any heir, archaeologists wrote in their journal article. The scientists also wrote that “the vehicles, cavalry and infantry, laid out in a square formation, were reserved for burials of the monarchs or meritorious officials or princes” and they suspect Hong’s royal burial might lie undisturbed nearby.
Substantiating their suspicions, older residents in the area reported descriptions of “a prominent earthen mound, some 13 feet (4 meters) high, near the pit,” reports which are corroborated by an aerial photograph taken in 1938 by the Japanese Air Force. However, the study says that “Sometime in the 1960s or 1970s, workers removed the earth and flattened the area in order to widen the Jiaonan-Jinan Railway” and while “There are possibly architectural remains or a path leading from the pit… There is no way to explore the main burial chamber” believing that “the tomb itself may have been destroyed.”
There are around 300 infantry in a square formation at the center of the pit.
What Was The Function of Chinese Terracotta Armies?
This particular form of ritualized funerary art began with the burial of the First Emperor in 210 to 209 BC which is arguably one of the most famous archaeological sites anywhere in the world, discovered by villagers in 1974. According to a Daily Mail article about the latest terracotta findings “The figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals. Current estimates [of the full sized terracotta army at X’ian] are that there were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried.”
Archaeologists know that the specific purpose of the warriors was to ‘protect’ emperors in their journeys into the corridors of the afterlife and they are thought of as of “crucial importance to our understanding of his attempts to control the world even in death.” Second in importance to being protected after death, Chinese emperors, it would seem, also required to be ‘entertained’, a claim which is made evident in the discovery of terracotta “acrobats, bureaucrats, musicians and bronze birds” at the First Emperor’s grave and the “model of a theatrical pavilion holding small sculptures of musicians” found at the new pit.
Terracotta Warrior Wrangle
Over the last decade the terracotta grave warriors have travelled from China and have been displayed in museums and universities in several countries, but these new statues won’t be coming to North America any time soon. And this has nothing to do with current trade wars or political wrangling, but because of the open wound in American - Chinese cause in 21st December 2017 when a 24-year-old American man was arrested by the FBI for breaking off and then stealing part of a $4.5 million Terracotta Warrior.
According to a report on Ancient Origins the Chinese government was pressing for a heavy jail sentence and as of yet the case is not closed, and until such times that it is, no more Chinese artifacts will find their way to American shores.

Alien Abductee's Strange Ecounters With Beings Not of This Planet (Video)
Thousands of people have reported the observation of structured craft that maneuver beyond our technological capability or that of any other nation. They appear to have overcome inertia and have their own gravitational field. Non-human figures have been observed both in the craft and on the ground. Sometimes they appear to be collecting samples of our flora and fauna.
They take samples of our wildlife and leave them with highly unusual properties, to the ground. They have been observed entering our oceans and rising from them into the air, departing vertically toward space. Thousands contend they have been kidnapped by non-humans in association with these craft and returned to their natural environment. Others claim that they’ve had a lifetime of friendly contact.

Ancient Mysteries of Our Time Biggest Secrets Answered via Graham Hancock (Video)
Ancient Mysteries of Our Time Biggest Secrets Answered via Graham Hancock (Video)
Graham Hancock as you’ve never seen before, answering a multitude of questions on ancient origins. Graham traveled to Ethiopia and then to Israel, to uncover the lost secrets of the Ark of the Covenant.
The Sign and the Seal took him to Egypt and opened his eyes to the incredible enigma of the Great Pyramid of Giza, while the “technological” aspects of the Ark had alerted Hancock to the existence of out of place technologies in antiquity.
The stage was now set for his next project – a worldwide investigation into the possibility of a lost, prehistoric civilisation that resulted, in 1995, in the publication of Fingerprints of the Gods, undoubtedly his best known book.
Graham will answer questions of these subjects and many more in this previously unseen lecture.

Egyptian monuments rival the grandeur of our most modern buildings today and have wowed mankind for centuries. The landmarks have been connected to deities and gods since ancient times and the Great Pyramid of Giza is widely seen as one of mankind's most incredible achievements. These constructions were erected by a civilisation that had no knowledge of the wheel and were technologically limited, compared to modern standards. In Netflix documentary “The Pyramid Code”, researchers and conspiracy theorists question the possibility that the Egyptian pyramids were "built with high technology".
However, the show explains that we are taught to believe that we are the ones with knowledge of high technology, something the ancient Egyptians could not have possibly had.
Dr. Carmen Boulter, PHD, claims: “As long as we think that the ancients weren’t able to use high technology, then we're not looking for it.
"And yet, the evidence is right in front of our eyes.”
The Great Pyramid of Giza is estimated to have around 2,300,000 stone blocks that weigh from 2 to 30 tons each and there are even some blocks that weigh over 50 tons.
(Image: Getty)
The pyramid was composed of 144,000 casing stones and it is believed that all of them were highly polished and flat to an accuracy of 1/100th of an inch, about 100 inches thick and weighing approximately 15 tons each.
Evidence of advanced knowledge can be found in the Pyramid of Giza as the centres of the four sides are indented with an extraordinary degree of precision, forming the only eight-sided pyramid.

The Rolling Stones song “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” was recorded 50 years ago this year, but If Keith Richards was born today, or at least during the current week, his signature opening line about a crossfire hurricane (which referred to a World War II German air raid on London) might have been updated to the dark matter hurricane slamming into the solar system and planet Earth as we speak. A what?
“The cosmic weather forecast calls for strong dark matter winds in our region of the Galaxy. The prediction is based on a new study of a nearby collection of stars that are all moving in the same direction.”
In the study “Dark matter hurricane: Measuring the S1 stream with dark matter detectors” published this past week in the journal Physical Review D and summarized in Physics, researchers from the University of Zaragoza in Spain reveal – a little too late – that Earth is presently in the midst of a ‘stellar stream’ that may contain a large amount of dark matter. Let’s break that down and see if we should look up at the sky or bend over and kiss our butts goodbye.
A stellar stream is the remains of a dwarf galaxy that was destroyed by a larger one. In this case, a stream called S1 by the researchers who discovered it last year using the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite is the remnants of dwarf galaxy eaten by the Milky Way billions of years ago. It appears to contain remnants of about 30,000 stars and is traveling through the galaxy at a speed of about 500 kilometers (310 miles) per second. How do they know this? Because it’s blowing past and around the sun and our planet right now.
That in and of itself doesn’t put us in any danger, according to the study. However, what happened on its journey here might. While passing through the rest of the galaxy, S1 has been picking up dark matter and is now bombarding us with it at such a high speed that study co-author Ciaran O’Hare named it a “dark matter hurricane.” (A new song would have to credit O’Hara to avoid the controversy Keith had with Stones bass player Bill Wyman over his uncredited contribution to the opening guitar riff of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”)
Inferred distribution of dark matter (blue) through the effect of gravitational lensing
Since we’re already theoretically surrounded by dark matter, the hurricane itself isn’t hurting us. In fact, it’s helping astronomers and physicists potentially identify what dark matter really is. One theory is that it’s a form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). O’Hara’s team believes current detectors won’t be able to pick them up but future WIMP detectors might. They’re more excited about identifying axion dark matter (theoretical particles 500 million times lighter than electrons) which “should exhibit a broad bump with an additional narrow peak if the S1 hurricane is truly buffeting our shores.”
So, we’re not going to get hit by any of the big pieces in S1 and we’re theoretically in no danger of the load of theoretical dark matter it’s dumping on us. The S1 dark matter hurricane is one of those things that will only give wet dreams to astronomers, physicists … and possibly future songwriters and heavy metal bands.
“Here I am … rock you like a dark matter hurricane.”
It’s an inevitability that when we find extraterrestrial life, despite the funding and civic pride and hope the nations of the world have put into their space programs, it’s going to be a rich dude that finds it. When you’ve got more money than you can count in a lifetime, the reasonable thing to do is hunt for aliens. What else is there to do? Yachts get boring after number 7 or 8, and you’re guaranteed an immortal legacy if you’re responsible for first contact with extraterrestrial life. Russian billionaire Yuri Milner is trying to be that rich dude, and he recently signed an agreement with NASA for their help with his planned mission to hunt for alien life on Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus.
According to New Scientist, NASA is providing concepts, plans, and consulting work for Milner’s mission, which would be the first ever privately funded mission to deep space. From their report:
Agreements signed by NASA and Milner’s non-profit Breakthrough Starshot Foundation in September show that the organisations are working on scientific, technical and financial plans for the ambitious mission. NASA has committed over $70,000 to help produce a concept study for a flyby mission. The funds won’t be paid to Breakthrough but represent the agency’s own staffing costs on the project.
Non-profit is a funny word. Some things are worth more than money and discovering alien life represents an incalculable profit.
The Breakthrough Initiatives were founded in 2015 by Milner and his wife Julia, their board of directors includes Yuri Milner and Mark Zuckerberg. The late physicist Stephen Hawking was on the board of directors, but we live in a world where the Facebook guy is going to discover aliens instead of Stephen Hawking. Let that sink in. Not too deep though, it’s incredibly depressing.
Enceladus.

Breakthrough Starshot is just one of the initiatives that the foundation is undertaking. Others include designing tech like solar sails and there are initiatives to fund both the listening for extraterrestrial civilizations and the sending of our own messages that someone might listen to. Which we can all agree is a terrible idea.
As to why they’re choosing Enceladus, the ice moon represents one of our best chances for finding life outside the cozy blanket of Earth’s atmosphere. Enceladus is cold. Its surface temperature never reaches above −324 °F (−198 °C). Despite its surface temperature, the Cassini spacecraft found evidence of a large ocean of liquid water beneath the ice surface in 2014. Cassini also observed geysers of ice and other compounds shooting into space, shows internal geothermal activity. Enceladus is locked in orbital resonance with another moon, Dione, and the resulting tidal activity in Enceladus’ subsurface ocean seems to be driving that activity. There’s something else too: on June 27, 2018, NASA revealed that Cassini had detected complex organic matter in the ice jets coming out of Enceladus.
Cross section of what Enceladus’ interior probably looks like.
Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
So we’ve got a water ocean, geothermal activity, and complex organic matter being shot into space from that ocean. Yeah, that seems life a fair place to look for life.
We’ll see. The beginning states of the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative will begin next year, as the team begins working through the concepts and planning phases. For all the problems with ultra-wealthy individuals making themselves the standard-bearers of humanity, there is an undeniable truth that money makes things happen. If enough money is thrown at these projects then it’s a sure bet that something will get done. What it is and what we’ll find is anyone’s guess at this point, but it will probably be pretty neat.
The Irish Aviation Authority is investigating a series of unexplained sightings reported by pilots flying over Ireland’s west coast last week. The incident began on Friday, November 9 when Shannon Air Traffic Control received a call from a British Airways Boeing 787 pilot flying from Montreal to Heathrow. Around 6:47 a.m. local time, the pilot radioed in to ask air traffic controllers if any military exercises were taking place at the time after he says his plane was buzzed by a “really bright light” which intercepted his plane before zooming away to the north “at a very high speed.”
Air traffic control reported nothing on radar.
Two other planes also reported witnessing similar objects in the area around the same time. Audio of those interactions between pilots and Shannon Air Traffic Control have been posted to YouTube. A nearby pilot can be heard suggesting that the objects may be meteors entering the Earth’s atmosphere, noting that multiple bright objects were following the same trajectory. A third pilot then joins in, adding “Glad it wasn’t just me.”
In response to those sightings, the Irish Aviation Authority issued the following statement to the Irish Examiner:
Following reports from a small number of aircraft on Friday 9th November of unusual air activity the IAA has filed a report. This report will be investigated under the normal confidential occurrence investigation process.
We could very well never know what it was these pilots saw given the lack of any other evidence. Still, this incident adds to the growing body of recent sightings documented by recordings between pilots and air traffic controllers. Do these suggest some type of high strangeness going on overhead, or possibly that the skies aren’t quite as friendly as they used to be?
I always tend to side with theories which pin UFO activity and anomalous sightings on military activity or new types of unknown or unmanned aircraft. Given the somewhat testy geopolitical climate of today, it could be merely that we’re getting glimpses of things to come: hypersonic and space-based warfare, governmental misdirection, and a whole lot of confused civilians on the ground.
I was checking out the NASA SOHO images from their satellite that monitors the sun. The EIT filter captured a strange shaped UFO near the sun. The object appears to be white metallic with a reflection of yellow over it, probably caused from being so near the surface of the sun. The video is in HD so make it full screen to get a better view. Scott C. Waring
Updated: Made a video analysing the UFO...Video below.
I am searching for some photos of these UFOs. They reported multiple UFOs, glowing flying twice the speed of sound one after another and that just incredible. We have to believe aircraft pilots...we put our families lives at risk when flying with them...trusting them to do their job well. They are trained pilots who have trained for everything...except this. Listen to this audio tape and just maybe it will open some eyes about the existence of aliens. Scott C. Waring
Below you see that I added contrast, which reveals that there are spinning parts of this orb...separate parts which rotate in unison around the UFO. These panels that are seen on the UFO below rotate together and allow this UFO to travel faster than light speed. When the pilots and radar operators saw them, the UFO fleets speed was twice that of the speed of sound. These are built for speed and for carrying passengers across the universe. SCW
News states:
At 6.47am on November 9, 2018, the pilot of a British Airways flight contacted Shannon Air Traffic Control (ATC) to report a mysterious object travelling at high speed, and to ask if there were military exercises taking place in the airspace through which her Boeing 787 was passing. She was told that no military exercises were taking place, and that there was nothing unusual showing up on radar. The pilot responded: “OK. It was moving so fast.” The controller then asked: “Alongside you?” She described how the UFO came up along the left-hand side of the aircraft, “then rapidly veered to the north”. She said it was “a very bright light” that “disappeared at very high speed”. The pilot of a Virgin Airlines Boeing 747 then joined the conversation and said there were “multiple objects following the same sort of trajectory”. Shannon ATC asked if the pilots knew which direction the objects were heading. The Virgin Airlines pilot said it was in his “11 o’clock position” with “two bright lights over to the right”, that then climbed away at speed. The Irish Aviation Authority has begun an investigation into the sighting.

So what is going on here? Inter-dimensional visitors from the Otherworld? Advanced military projects? Extraterrestrials? Black magic? Spirits of the land? We live in a more unusual world than most of us ever really notice. The type of incidents detailed in this documentary occur the length and breadth of our island and planet and have done arguably for as long as we have existed.
This is a classic piece of citizen investigation. Strange lights in the sky, people disappearing, big cats stalking the landscape, werewolves in the woods, fairy folklore, little humanoid creatures, this is high strangeness galore! The veil between worlds seems to be very thin in this area of East Yorkshire.

On the morning of October 23, Exopolitics long-time source JP (a pseudonym) was once again instructed to look up into the sky by a nearby covert operative where he saw a rectangle platform shaped UFO.
He used his camera phone to take five photos of the UFO. He then noticed that he had missing time and when he tried to recall what had happened he had memory flashes of being inside the flying rectangle he had just photographed.
It seems the military use antigravity rectangle UFOs to carry out special abduction and mind control operations!

1942: Is This Original Footage of the Battle of Los Angeles UFO Incident? (Video)
The Battle of Los Angeles, also known as The Great Los Angeles Air Raid, is the name given by contemporary sources to the rumored enemy attack and subsequent anti-aircraft artillery barrage which took place from late 24 February to early 25 February 1942 over Los Angeles, California.
The incident occurred less than three months after the United States entered World War II as a result of the Japanese Imperial Navy’s attack on Pearl Harbor, and one day after the bombardment of Ellwood on 23 February 1942.
Initially, the target of the aerial barrage was thought to be an attacking force from Japan, but speaking at a press conference shortly afterward, Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox called the incident a “false alarm.” Newspapers of the time published a number of reports and speculations of a cover-up.
The spacecraft zoomed within 15 million miles (24 million kilometers) of the sun on Monday (Nov. 5) — far closer than any mission had ever gotten before. And on Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 7), the probe phoned home, telling its controllers that it's in good health and continuing to collect science data.

"Parker Solar Probe was designed to take care of itself and its precious payload during this close approach, with no control from us on Earth — and now we know it succeeded," Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate at agency headquarters in Washington, D.C., said in a statement. [The Parker Solar Probe's Mission to the Sun in Pictures]
"Parker is the culmination of six decades of scientific progress," Zurbuchen added. "Now, we have realized humanity's first close visit to our star, which will have implications not just here on Earth, but for a deeper understanding of our universe."
The probe also set a speed record during its first solar encounter, which technically ran from Oct. 31 through Monday. At closest approach, the spacecraft topped out at 213,200 mph (343,112 km/h) relative to the sun, NASA officials said.
The German-American Helios 2 mission had held both the speed and close-approach records. In April 1976, that probe reached 153,454 mph (246,960 km/h) and got within 26.55 million miles (42.73 million km) of the sun.
The Parker Solar Probe will break both of its new records many times over the next seven years. The spacecraft will make 23 additional solar flybys during this span, getting closer and closer to our star.

The final close approach, in late 2025, will take the Parker Solar Probe to within just 3.83 million miles (6.16 million km) of the sun's surface. During that dramatic flyby, the sun's gravity will accelerate the spacecraft to around 430,000 mph (690,000 km/h), NASA officials have said.
The $1.5 billion Parker Solar Probe mission launched on Aug. 12, tasked with helping scientists better understand the sun's structure, composition and activity. The observations the spacecraft makes during its flybys should help solve two longstanding solar puzzles, mission team members have said — why the sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, is so much hotter than the surface, and how the flow of charged particles known as the solar wind gets accelerated to such high speeds.
Mike Wall's book about the search for alien life, "Out There,"will be published on Nov. 13 by Grand Central Publishing.
The pilots spotted fast flying objects and bright lights in the sky
The Irish Aviation Authority is investigating reports of bright lights and UFOs off the south-west coast of Ireland.
It began at 06:47 local time on Friday 9 November when a British Airways pilot contacted Shannon air traffic control.
She wanted to know if there were military exercises in the area because there was something "moving so fast".
The air traffic controller said there were no such exercises.
The pilot, flying from the Canadian city of Montreal to Heathrow, said there was a "very bright light" and the object had come up along the left side of the aircraft before it "rapidly veered to the north".
She was wondering what it could be but said it did not seem to be heading for a collision.
Another pilot from a Virgin plane joined in and suggested it might be a meteor or another object re-entering the earth's atmosphere.
He said there were "multiple objects following the same sort of trajectory" and that they were very bright.
The pilot said he saw "two bright lights" over to the right which climbed away at speed.
One pilot said the speed was "astronomical, it was like Mach 2" - which is twice the speed of sound.
What could it have been?
Apostolos Christou, an astronomer from the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, said what the pilots saw was probably a piece of dust entering the earth's atmosphere at very high speed.
"It was most likely what are commonly called shooting stars," he said.
"It appears the matter was extremely bright so it must have been quite a large piece of material.
"I cannot say from the pilots' description, but it could have been the size of a walnut or an apple."
The astronomer said November tended to be a very busy month for such activity.
"It also appears there were bits coming off the object and flying past the aeroplane, that is also what you would expect if it was a particularly large rock from space hitting the atmosphere, it would tend to fragment."
"Following reports from a small number of aircraft on Friday 9 November of unusual air activity the IAA has filed a report," the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said.
"This report will be investigated under the normal confidential occurrence investigation process."
A spokesperson for Shannon Airport said it would not be appropriate for the airport to comment while the IAA investigation is ongoing.
Not long ago, we couldn’t see planets orbiting distant stars at all. Now astronomers have captured the passage of exoplanet Beta Pictoris b into the glare of its star … then its re-emergence 2 years later.
View larger. | Exoplanet Beta Pictoris b moving around its parent star, from December 2014 until it disappeared into the star’s glare in late 2016. Then, 2 years later, astronomers saw it re-emerge on the other side of its star. Notice the planet’s position in the bottom right image, in contrast to the others!
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) said on November 12, 2018, that its Very Large Telescope has captured an unprecedented series of images showing the passage of the exoplanet Beta Pictoris b around its parent star. The images are above. They’re amazing on their face, but especially when you notice the location of the exoplanet in the bottom right image – the one from September 2018 – in contrast to all those that came before. In other words, this planet went into the glare of its star for about two years. We couldn’t see it at all then. But now it has re-emerged on the opposite side of its star, as any respectable world moving in orbit would do.
We know worlds in space do this, but to see it! That’s something new.
It wasn’t until the early 1990s that astronomers began finding planets orbiting distant suns. Now – despite the conjecture that there might be some billion planets in our Milky Way galaxy alone – we’ve managed to discover only several thousand exoplanets. It’s finding them in the glare of their stars that has been the challenge. By their nature, stars produce light; planets don’t. Planets only shine with the reflected light from their stars. So spotting them in their stars’ glare was a major challenge to astronomers for decades.
And it’s still a challenge, although – as you can see from this stunning image – the technologies have vastly improved.
Beta Pictoris b is a young massive exoplanet, initially discovered via direct imaging in 2008 using ESO’s NACOinstrument at the Very Large Telescope. Most exoplanets are discovered when they transit, or pass in front of, their stars along our line of sight. But, from our earthly perspective, Beta Pictoris b doesn’t quite transit, so it hadto be found via direct imaging. ESO said:
The same science team [that discovered it] since tracked the exoplanet from late 2014 until late 2016, using the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument (SPHERE) — another instrument on the Very Large Telescope.
Beta Pictoris b then passed so close to the halo of the star that no instrument could resolve them from one another. Almost two years later, after seeming to merge into the image of the star, Beta Pictoris b has now emerged from the halo. This reappearance was captured again by SPHERE … [which] specializes in direct imaging, hunting for exoplanets by taking their photographs. This extraordinarily challenging endeavor provides us with clear images of distant worlds such as Beta Pictoris b, 63 light-years away.
Beta Pictoris b orbits its star at a distance similar to that between the sun and Saturn [approximately 800 million miles or 1.3 billion kilometers], meaning it’s the most closely orbiting exoplanet ever to have been directly imaged. The surface of this young planet is still hot, around 1,500 degrees Celsius [2,700 degrees Fahrenheit], and the light it emits enabled SPHERE to discover it and track its orbit, seeing it emerge from its passage in front of its parent star.
ESO has also created a timelapse video from these images, which you can see here. Enjoy!
Bottom line: Stunning new sequence of images from ESO’s SPHERE instrument, showing the passage of exoplanet Beta Pictoris b into the glare of its star and then, two years later, re-emerging.
Some 4,000 years ago, the Harappa culture thrived in the Indus River Valley of what is now modern Pakistan and northern India. They had big, prosperous cities, invented sewage centuries before the Romans, and established far-reaching trade routes to Mesopotamia. But in less than two centuries, their culture faded and their cities fell — and the main culprit may have been climate change.

The Indus Valley civilization was a primarily urban culture sustained by surplus agricultural production and commerce. They preferred urban settlements and built at least two major cities: Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, which were remarkably advanced for their time.
But things started to change around 2500 BCE. Shifting temperatures and weather patterns all over the Indus Valley caused a gradual dry-up of the summer monsoons, which made agriculture more and more difficult.
Liviu Giosan, a geologist at WHOI and lead author of the new paper, says this is what ultimately brought their demise and forced them to slowly retreat to smaller villages in the Himalayan foothills.
“Although fickle summer monsoons made agriculture difficult along the Indus, up in the foothills, moisture and rain would come more regularly,” Giosan says. “As winter storms from the Mediterranean hit the Himalayas, they created rain on the Pakistan side, and fed little streams there. Compared to the floods from monsoons that the Harappans were used to seeing in the Indus, it would have been relatively little water, but at least it would have been reliable.”
The end of an era
This isn’t a new theory, but evidence for these shifting patterns has been difficult to find in soil samples. So instead, Giosan and colleagues took to the ocean. They looked at microscopic fossils called foraminifera. Foraminifera are primitive “living fossils,” living from the Cambrian (542 million years ago) on to the present. They have a fossil commonly made of calcium carbonate, which means they often fossilize, especially in the environment of the Indus area. However, instead of looking for fossils, researchers looked one step deeper: they looked for DNA fragments.
“The seafloor near the mouth of the Indus is a very low-oxygen environment, so whatever grows and dies in the water is very well preserved in the sediment,” says Giosan. “You can basically get fragments of DNA of nearly anything that’s lived there.”
“The value of this approach is that it gives you a picture of the past biodiversity that you’d miss by relying on skeletal remains or a fossil record. And because we can sequence billions of DNA molecules in parallel, it gives a very high-resolution picture of how the ecosystem changed over time,” adds William Orsi, paleontologist and geobiologist at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, who collaborated with Giosan on the work.
This is an interesting type of indirect evidence: during winter monsoons, strong winds bring nutrients from the deeper parts of the ocean towards the surface, feeding a surge in plant and animal life — evidence of this surge is recorded in DNA sequences in sedimentary layers of the ocean floor. The DNA evidence revealed that winter monsoons seemed to become stronger, and summer monsoons weaker towards the later years of the Harappan civilization, corresponding with the move from cities to villages. It’s not clear exactly when and how quickly this process took place, but it was the end of an era.
“We don’t know whether Harappan caravans moved toward the foothills in a matter of months or this massive migration took place over centuries. What we do know is that when it concluded, their urban way of life ended,” Giosan says.
A lesson for today
This event signifies a very important warning for today. Unlike us, the Harappans didn’t bring this climate change on themselves — the source of this climate change actually came from very far away. A mini ice age settled in, releasing colder air from the Arctic into the Atlantic and subsequently, into northern Europe. In turn, this pushed the cold (but relatively warmer air) of northern Europe around, creating storms into the Mediterranean, which led to a surge in winter monsoons over the Indus valley — it was a remarkable series of domino pieces falling into place and sparking doom for the Harappan cities.
A similar process is happening today, and climate change is setting in motion a complex mechanism that will affect all areas of the globe.
“It’s remarkable, and there’s a powerful lesson for today,” he notes. “If you look at Syria and Africa, the migration out of those areas has some roots in climate change. This is just the beginning–sea level rise due to climate change can lead to huge migrations from low lying regions like Bangladesh, or from hurricane-prone regions in the southern U.S. Back then, the Harappans could cope with change by moving, but today, you’ll run into all sorts of borders. Political and social convulsions can then follow.”
“Gelukkig komt daar langzaam verandering in.
When it comes to the matter of UFOs, there’s one question that I get asked more than any other. Namely, “Have you ever seen a UFO?” Well, in the terms that most people think of UFOs, my answer to that question can only be a firm “No.” By that, I mean I have never seen a nuts and bolts-type object flying in the sky that baffled me. But, I did have one experience that some might suggest (and, indeed, have suggested) should cause me to change my stance. The story goes back more than a decade. Along with the late Rob Riggs (the author of several books, including In the Big Thicket), and several other friends and colleagues, on June 11, 2005 I headed out to Texas’ Big Thicket. It’s a large area of forestland that has a couple of weird legends attached to it: (a) the many and varied Bigfoot reports that have surfaced from the area; and (b) the Big Thicket’s resident “Ghost Lights,” as they have become known.
If, late at night, you have hung out in the Big Thicket’s Bragg Road (or Ghost Road and Ghost Light Road, as it’s known locally), you’ll know it’s very easy to mistake car headlights for something much stranger. But, that doesn’t take away the fact that there are far more than a few cases on record which stand the test of time. My very own late-night encounter in the area in 2005 was one of them. Here’s how I described the brief affair in my 2007 book, Memoirs of a Monster Hunter:
“We were on our way back to the vehicles to grab a bite to eat and some drinks when, as we entered a clearing in the trees, a basketball-sized bright light floated over us at a height of about 35 feet. It was moving from right to left, and sailed slowly, yet, purposefully on its journey. The ghost light was present for barely 10 seconds, but I managed to quickly capture the strange visitor on camera before it blinked out, never to return. Indeed, it all happened so fast that I almost convinced myself it had merely been a dream or the result of wishful thinking. But it was neither. The photograph had clearly recorded the ghost light. And more importantly, several members of the group could be seen in the picture, too, as could the road and the surrounding trees. In other words, I had secured an almost perfectly framed image of one of the Big Thicket’s mysterious ghost lights.”
And that was about it, a brief view of…well…something. So, to return to the theme of this article (did I see a UFO?), it all very much depends on how you, me and anyone and everyone interested in the subject interprets the term “UFO.” What I saw in the Big Thicket in the summer of 2005 was certainly unidentified. I can’t say it was flying, though. It was more like it was slowly, gently floating. And I saw no evidence at all that it was an “object.” At least, not in the way the word is used by ufologists. Rather, it just appeared to be a light. I suppose, something along the lines of the equally-controversial matter of ball-lightning.
In view of all the above, some might say that I really did see a UFO. Others might even go so far as to claim I saw an alien spacecraft (but, if it was, it would have been a hell of a small one!). Me? All I can say for sure is that I saw a fairly significantly-sized ball of light – and for a very short time – that was briefly there and which was then suddenly gone. At a veryconsiderable stretch, I guess I could claim to have seen a UFO. But, I would be deceiving myself. All I can say for sure is that I saw an odd light.
