Alle moderne mensen stammen af van één enkel stel dat 100.000 tot 200.000 jaar geleden leefde, zo zeggen wetenschappers.

Ze analyseerden de genetische ‘barcodes’ van vijf miljoen dieren en kwamen tot de conclusie dat de mensheid is voortgekomen uit twee volwassenen na een catastrofe waarbij bijna alle soorten uitstierven.

Deze barcodes, stukjes DNA die in levende cellen kunnen worden gevonden, suggereren dat niet alleen mensen, maar ook negen op de 10 diersoorten in diezelfde periode zijn ontstaan.

Wetenschappers analyseerden de genetische "barcodes" van 5 miljoen dieren en 100.000 vershillende soorten

Vraagtekens

De wetenschappers, Mark Stoeckle en David Thaler, concludeerden dat 90 procent van alle diersoorten die vandaag de dag leven, zo’n 250.000 jaar geleden tegelijkertijd is ontstaan.

Ze trekken daarmee de menselijke evolutie in twijfel.

“Deze conclusie is erg verrassend en ik heb er zo hard tegen gestreden als ik maar kon,” zei Thaler.

De onderzoekers hebben geen idee waarom de mens zo ‘kort’ geleden weer overnieuw moest beginnen.

Mensen blijken niet alleen verrassend veel op elkaar te lijken, maar ook op alle andere soorten.

Zo verschilt het mitochondriale DNA van duiven en mensen maar heel weinig van elkaar.

“In termen van cultuur, levenservaringen en andere dingen verschillen we van elkaar, maar als je naar de biologie kijkt lijken we heel erg op vogels,” zei dr. Stoeckle.

Voici quelques images brutes d’un OVNI qui sort tout droit du ciel au-dessus de la Californie cette semaine. L’OVNI brille de mille feux et descend lentement du ciel. Au début, il ressemble à un météore, mais sa chute est trop lente pour en être un. Des images déconcertantes, c’est le moins que l’on puisse dire. Le fait est que deux ovnis existent et se succèdent, donc ils veillent l’un sur l’autre. Une sorte de copilote, comme ils l’ont fait dans l’US / Navy pour les pilotes afin de les tenir à l’écart des ennuis. Manifestement contrôlé intelligemment.

Quelques amis à moi et moi étions assis sur mon porche en train de fumer des cigarettes quand nous avons remarqué quelque chose qui tombait du ciel, au début c’était un météore, mais ensuite nous avons remarqué qu’il s’est arrêté et a commencé à aller sur le côté après avoir plané pendant un moment. Un autre objet est apparu à côté.

Sky watchers often report seeing rainbow colors in clouds. There are various kinds of halos and colored arcs and even true rainbows you might see associated with clouds, but – if the rainbow-like colors are randomly distributed, and if the sun is nearby – what you’re seeing is likely an iridescent cloud.

These sorts of clouds are caused by especially tiny ice crystals or water droplets in the air. Larger ice crystals produce lunar or solar halos, but tiny ice crystals or water droplets cause light to be diffracted – spread out – creating this rainbow-like effect in the clouds.

Our friend Dave Walker in the UK caught another iridescent cloud in 2013. He wrote, “There’s been a lot of very high cloud recently, always a cue for me to look out for more atmospheric optics.”

The best way to see an iridescent cloud is to place the sun itself behind some foreground object, a building or mountain, for example. Other aids are dark glasses, or observing the sky reflected in a convex mirror or in a pool of water. EarthSky Facebook friend Duke Marsh captured this image in 2012 in New Albany, Indiana.

Charles Loyd wrote in 2014: “I was outside and my 9-year-old daughter looked up and asked why there was a rainbow in the clouds … “

Bottom line: You might on occasion see a rainbow-like cloud. They’re fairly rare, but people do spot them, and we sometimes receive photos of them. They’re caused by the presence of very tiny ice crystals or water droplets in the air, which cause light to be diffracted (spread out).

Sprawled out across a portion of the northern Mojave Desert of California, in the United States, is the magnificent yet forbidding moonscape that is Death Valley. This is one of the hottest, most inhospitable places on the planet, boasting the highest ground temperature ever recorded on earth at 201 °F (93.9 °C), and in general a sun-scorched wasteland, devoid of water and pounded by relentless sun and heat. It is so inhospitable that it might as well be the surface of some remote, lifeless planet, and it is not called Death Valley for nothing. Yet, for how totally uninhabitable it may seem there have long been Native tribes living in this extreme land for thousands of years, and it some reports are to be believed there is even a mysterious lost civilization that lived under it all.

The tribe most associated with the Death Valley region is the Paiute, who like many other tribes throughout the world have their particular legends and myths about the land they inhabit. For the Paiute one of the most intriguing is that of a great underground city they call Shin-au-av, meaning “God’s Land” or “Ghost Land.” According to the lore, there was once a great chief who lost his wife to the clutches of death. Unable to cope without her, this chief took a journey to the land of spirits, during which he found himself in a vast subterranean world. In this land he was attacked by horrific monsters, which he barely managed to fend off as he retreated, finally crossing a rock bridge and coming to a peaceful land ruled by a chief called Shin-au-av.

Death Valley

This was apparently a land of lush green meadows, sweeping valleys, and dancing, happy people, and the chief who had stumbled across this magical place realized that is was a land of spirits, possibly even harboring his dead wife. He even asked if his wife was there, and one of his guides said that she indeed was, and that she would be presented to him with the caveat that he whisk her away as soon as possible without looking back. The chief was elated, but after waiting several days she did not materialize. He was about to give up but then she appeared and he did as promised, taking her by the hand and leading her across that stone bridge back to the land of the living, but he broke his pact by looking once more onto that sumptuous realm of green and his wife subsequently faded away once again. The heartbroken chief made his way back to his village, but he was never the same again, and his tale of that amazing underground domain became the stuff of legends.

Whether this fantastic fable is based in any way in reality or not, there have actually been explorers and adventurers who seem to have stumbled across this seemingly mythical place buried under the harsh hellscape of the Death Valley above, and whether connected to this legend or not there have been many who have claimed to have found something quite odd there under the parched earth. One of the earliest such accounts comes from the early 1900s, when two men named White and Thomason were said to have been hiking through Death Valley and one of them allegedly fell through the ground into an old mine shaft at a place called Wingate Pass.

It turned out that there underground was a gigantic cavern that they claim to have followed for 20 miles beneath the earth, where it penetrated out under the Panamint Mountains. According to them, this meandering, expansive cavern emptied out into a vast and ancient subterranean city, which had long since been abandoned but which still held much evidence of its past residents. White and Thomason said that they found perfectly preserved mummies wearing leather clothing and gold jewelry down there in the dank depths, as well as gold spears, a polished stone round table of some sort, golden statues, and just generally gold lying all over the place, as well as countless gemstones. Throughout all of it was an intricate lighting system that they speculated harnessed natural gases, and immense stone doors that seemed to have once been operated with elaborate mechanical systems.

The men claimed to have taken some of the treasure and relics out of there so that they could be studied, but that they had been subsequently stolen by an associate. They captured the attention of the Smithsonian Institute, and promised that they could show them where the entrance to this bizarre underground world was, but the men were unable to locate it again. Considering there is absolutely no evidence of these men’s claims, we are left to merely speculate as to how much truth any of it has.

In the 1920s there was another interesting account when a Native Guide named Tom Wilson came forward to claim that his prospector grandfather had also found some sort of underground city under Death Valley. Wilson said that his grandfather had followed a cave down into the earth, where he had come across a city of fair-skinned people living there underground, who spoke a language he could not understand and were decked out in leather clothing of some sort. This strange race had horses down there, and the whole city was lit up by some sort of lighting system he could not comprehend. Interestingly, Wilson would hear the earlier account of the explorer White and would go on to spend the rest of his life obsessively looking for the lost city without success until he passed away in 1968.

In 1947 the mysterious lost city of Death Valley captured the public imagination when a man named Howard E. Hill came forward with a rather bizarre tale of his own, which was circulated in the newspaper The San Diego Union. Hill told of a man named Dr. F. Bruce Russell and his colleague, an archeologist named Dr. Daniel S. Bovee. In 1931, Russell was claimed to have discovered a complex network of subterranean caves, which were stumbled across completely by accident while sinking for a mine shaft to make a claim on. The two men went on to explore these uncharted tunnels and found a series of spectacular caverns and catacombs down there in the gloom, which revealed some rather startling discoveries indeed.

According to the report, Russell and Bovee came across the mummified remains of three actual giants in the darkness, each measuring a purported 9 feet tall and wearing clothing that appeared to be jackets and knee length trousers made of some sort of unknown animal skin. The chamber that the giants were found in was allegedly full of relics that seemed to be some sort of mix of Egyptian and Native American design, and there were apparently hieroglyphics etched into the walls and ceiling. The men also found some sort of hall that they believed had been used for mysterious rituals, and within this hall were the remains of numerous animals presumably used for sacrifices, including both known and unknown animals, as well as the bones of extinct animals such as mammoths and even actual dinosaurs, as weird as that may seem.

Russell supposedly claimed that the remains were dated to be at least 80,000 years old, and that the whole complex meandered out into the unexplored dark for miles, with no telling what else lie within the unexplored murk. Although the two tried to get interest from the scientific community they were perhaps not surprisingly looked at with quite a bit of skepticism, with all of this talk of giant bones and dinosaur skeletons in an underground city. Yet they were apparently adamant that it was all real and that it was the discovery of the century. The two were finally able to draw some interest, but when they tried to find the entrance again they of course could not. Rather bizarrely, not long after this Dr. Russell and Bovee just suddenly vanished, and Russell’s car would supposedly be found abandoned in the desert of Death Valley several months later with no sign of its occupant.

There have been sporadic reports since of finding anomalous caverns and ruins down there in the earth below Death Valley, and we are left to wonder what it all means. Was there ever an ancient underground city here or is this all just myths and folklore? What of the findings of these explorers who have claimed to have been there? What is the significance of the mummies or the bones? It is a hard case to really get a bead on, and for now we are left to merely wonder if down in the depths below the unforgiving remote desert of Death Valley there is some ancient mysterious city lost to time.

70 metal plates contain the earliest account of Jesus

The discovery of 70 metal plates in Jordan in 2008 describes the earliest account of Jesus, among many other references to the time 2000 years ago. The metal plates have now been confirmed as authentic...

In 2008, the authenticity of the 70 metal plates was questioned, but now the codicils have been analyzed and confirm that they are genuine and 2000 years old. The metal plates have been joined together and represent documents from this period. Particularly striking is the statement that Jesus did not establish a new teaching at all, but that he carried on the teachings of King David as a 1000-year-old tradition.

His intention was not to create a new religion, but rather to represent a God who is both male and female. The metal plates were in a large box made of stone bone and lead. The scientists Roger Webb and Chris Jeynes from the "Nodus Laboratory" of Surrey University tested the plates extensively and found that they were equivalent to a sample from an ancient Roman mine at the excavation site in Dorset. The language to be discovered on the metal plates is Paleo-Hebrew. They also mention the apostles Peter, John, James, and Jesus.

The authors Jennifer and David Elkington have revived interest in Jordanian codicils. They temporarily received the metal plates for further study. They attempted to largely translate and examine the text. They even discovered the face of Jesus surrounded by a halo. Webb and Jeynes also stated in their research that the many blogs that doubted the authenticity of the metal plates withdrew these hasty conclusions because they are now considered authentic. The symbols discovered on the metal plates show a clear correspondence with those of the Temple of Solomon.

The names Jesus and Simon were also discovered. Simon is associated with Simon bar Kokba, who led a rebellion against Rome at the time. The plates are probably from 137, but are probably copies of the originals that were made in earlier times. In addition to the text, there are pictures and symbols, most of which are associated with the temple in Jerusalem. The pictures depict seven-branched candlesticks, palm trees, eight-pointed stars, bowls with templefern and diagonal crosses as symbols of the early Christian period. Links to the secret Kabbalah script have also been identified, esoteric and mystical script interpretations. In addition, references to coded Bible texts about the sealed books of the Bible of Isaiah, Daniel, and Revelation.

Jesus is said to have even known female apostles by his side. Dr. Ziad Al Saad, the former director of the antique collection in Amman, regards the codicil as one of the most important finds of our time. He very much hopes that the codicils will be known throughout the world in the future.

David Elkington is a well-known researcher and says: "The main material is found in nine plates of this book and also describes the beginnings here on earth. The representations are very astronomical in nature with stars. There are three stars on it, like the Sun, which are relevant, with Earth-like planets on it."

He also found the Ra symbol in them. He is convinced that the sun depicted does not mean our sun. "It seems to me as if we were never alone in the universe and we are the offshoots of distant star visitors," he explains thoughtfully.

Dmitri Rogozin gaf tijdens een gesprek met de president van Moldavië, Igor Dodon, antwoord op de vraag of gedurende het Apolloprogramma van de NASA in de jaren zestig en zeventig daadwerkelijk mensen op de maan zijn gezet.

Hij leek het als grap te bedoelen omdat hij grijnsde en zijn schouders ophaalde terwijl hij antwoord gaf, maar complottheorieën rond de maanmissies zijn erg populair in Rusland.

UFO streaking across the sky in front of a thunderstorm in Columbus, Ohio

The witness who reported the sighting to Mufon says that he observed lightning during a thunderstorm in Columbus, Ohio, which was only seen within the clouds. The clouds lit up several times during the video.

He says that he heard no sounds coming from the lightning and thought that it was unusual that the lightning was only seen within the clouds, and recorded the event.

During the recording some type of flying object can be seen streaking across the sky from left to right.

I noticed this object near the rover looks very similar in shape to a snail...like an old fossil of a Mars Ammonite from its ancient lakes or oceans. Here on Earth, Ammonites lived died out 66 million years ago, but lived as long ago as 200 million years ago. I believe that since it evolved on a different planet, its shape was effected by a different evolution involving different environmental influences. I'm confused at why the NASA rover didn't want to examine it more closely, since it was hovering over some rocks nearby for several days. It would be most interesting to have a paleontologist take a look at the object.

This video was taken in a UFO hotspot...Denver, Colorado just two days ago. Whats happening here is a drone UFO is creating a cloud tunnel for transportation purposes. The drone creates the tunnel and for some unknown reason the tunnels keep their shape for hours. UFOs will then use the tunnel to fly to the location s that they desire to go. At the end of the tunnel, where its being created, the object changed direction. 

 

Yes, I personally witnessed four such cloud tunnels (side by side) back in 1989-90 in Rapid City, SD and watched the glowing balls of light appear at the tunnels beginning which just happened to be 1km above my parking lot...everyone going to their cars were staring up in awe. The lights appeared one at a time (3X bigger than a B1 bomber) then then the light rolled increased speed moving from slow to fast, faster, then gone...then another orb would appear in a different tunnel and do the same...there was also a rumbling as it moved...like a wooden cart being pulled over a cobblestone road. Saw over 25 in 20 minutes...before I had to leave to work at Ellsworth AFB flight line. Its a base with hundreds of nuclear silos that it controls, and lots of B-1 bombers which I worked on. No, the UFOs were not USAF. I knew everything going on there, even saw the nuclear attack plans made for presentations since I worked with the base commander. Awesome, but never saw it in the news, even though it was seen by thousands of residence.

Some Youtube comments say it was just a meteor...but a meteor is incapable of changing direction so dramatically. It looks like its headed down into the Rocky Mountains...where there have been hundreds of UFO reports coming from...describing white glowing florescent orbs...that even the local government and police officers have reported seeing.

WHAT IF WE DISCOVERED ALIEN LIFE?

There are around 500 billion planets in the Milky Way alone, and at least 10 billion of them are Earth-like. All these planets, and yet, we’ve discovered exactly zero alien life forms.

But what if we did? What if NASA announced that they found microbes in the oceans of Europa? Or ancient alien ruins on Venus?

What would that mean to our human civilization here on Earth? Would we consider that good news at all?

Aliens? No Aliens?

Since humans began searching for extraterrestrial life within our Solar System in the 1890s, we’re still waiting to encounter an alien life form. But if we did find one, that would be very bad news. Because in that case we might as well be dead.

Obviously, in this case we’re referring to life which comes from a planet other than Earth, not alien residents of other countries. Humans have speculated about alien life for decades, ranging from simple bacteria to advanced species.

Most of our speculation on alien life is based on the simple fact that the universe is huge. How could we be the only life in the galaxy, let alone the universe?

This logic is based on the Copernican principle. Named for the scientist Nicolaus Copernicus, the principle states that the Earth and the Sun are not observers in the universe, nor are they better or worse than every other planet. Everything that applies to other planets applies to Earth… including life.

Scientists have proposed various ‘habitable zones’, where extraterrestrial life could theoretically live. Billions of ‘Earth-like’ planets have been discovered, but very few have been found in one of these zones which meet the criteria for life.

These zones require solvent water, which is a necessity for life on Earth.

So, what if the aliens invaded? It wouldn’t look anything like the alien invasion you might imagine. Nobody would blast their super advanced weapons at us… Hopefully not.

Even if they did, it wouldn’t be that much of a problem. Because by the time we found alien life, we’d already be on our way to self-destruction. All because of the Great Filter. But what kind of filter is capable to kill our entire civilization? And why?

The Great Brita Filter:

Let’s back up a little bit. Basic probability asserts that alien life must exist somewhere in the Universe. If that were the case, wouldn’t we be able to see some signs of life out there? But we don’t. The Universe seems endlessly empty.

It’s this contradiction that has been blowing scientists’ minds ever since they realized that the Universe is very, very big. They called it the Fermi paradox. It also says that all species in the Universe go through the same evolutionary path, no matter where they’re from.

First, the development of life anywhere in the Universe starts with the right star system and a planet that has just the right conditions.

Then organic compounds assemble themselves into self-replicating patterns and eventually evolve into more complex multi-cell organisms. All the way up to the species with the big brain, that eventually take over their own planet and change it according to their needs. Here on Earth, that happens to be us, humans.

Then there’s the last step – space colonization. That could happen for many reasons – overpopulation and the need to spread out to survive, conquest of solar systems one after another, or even simple curiosity. Whatever the reason is, all civilizations will end up trying to colonize space.

Some alien species may have been around for billions of years longer than us. But they still haven’t shown up here on Earth. Looks like something is making it very hard to colonize a galaxy, maybe even impossible. The Great Filter. Yes, the thing that might wipe out all of humanity.

It’s something very dangerous, something that happens to every civilization that is advanced enough to go beyond their planet. One of the steps on everyone’s evolutionary path. Something that takes maybe billions of years to go through.

Having never met life on other planets means that the hypothesized Great Filter didn’t wipe us out. Instead, we might be the first civilization to pass it safely, and the first to reach this level of technology in the entire Universe.

But, just because we haven’t seen them, doesn’t mean they don’t exist, or never existed…. There’s a chance some aggressive alien species might have been on the way to Earth to destroy us all. But since they never showed up on our planet, that means something destroyed their entire civilization before they even reached Earth. The Great Filter?

It doesn’t look we’re going to find anyone as advanced as we are. If there was a more advanced civilization than ours, we’d know it by now. The most we can hope for is bacteria on Mars, or multicellular animals in the oceans of Europa.

Both options would be disturbing, but the worst thing to find would be the ancient ruins of an advanced alien civilization.

Because if they didn’t get past the Great Filter, neither did we. The only difference is that they are long dead, and we are just on our way to self-destruction.

The more complex and advanced the discovered alien life was, the more likely it would mean we’re behind the Great Filter.

Maybe that filter starts once the species take control over their own planet?

AI destroying its creator… Experiments that blow up the whole planet… Genetic engineering gone wrong… Climate change…It could be anything. It might have happened to those dead alien civilizations, and might happen to us, too.

Alien life might sound like the most exciting discovery of our time. However, it may be better for us if the Universe is absolutely sterile, and there are billions of new planets to be discovered and terraformed.

What If Genetically Modified People Became the Norm?

SHENZEN, China — Amy and John Bollinsworth are sitting on a white couch in the waiting room of BabyX, China’s chain of premiere fertility clinics. Two days ago they flew from London with a mixture of excitement and anxiousness for today’s appointment with their genetic counselor.

After a month’s discussion and going through the BabyX’s gene catalogue, they’re ready to pick out the traits of their future baby: a piercing blue eyed, curly-red haired girl with tiny freckles on her face and a gene enabling her to sleep just a couple of hours a night and feel rested.

It is 2070, the year when China registered five million “designer babies” being born, up 20% from last year and expected to continue growing. BabyX, a part state-owned enterprise, is at the forefront on the boom. Developed out of GHealth, a consumer genomics company offering genetic tests to improve fertility treatments, BabyX received the first commercial baby-engineering license in 2030.

“We’re happy to be able to provide a high quality genetic service to our customers coming from over 50 countries across the world,” said Xiao Bao, head of BabyX business operations, speaking at a recent launch of a new product line in Beijing — a gene catalogue of sports traits including increased reaction speed, endurance, among others.

BabyX is one of many companies which sprung up during the genomics revolution in the first half of the 21st century. In 2014 the total sequencing market was estimated at $1.9 billion, with the potential market being estimated at $23 billion. For reproductive testing market, the opportunity was estimated to be close to $2.0 billion annually.

The “designer babies” are created using CRISPR gene editing, a technique that allows genes to be modified at specific desired locations within the genome and that became commonly used in laboratories around the world in early 2010s.

Gene editing is done using a tool called CRISPR-Cas9. CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Palindromic Repeats. The name refers to the DNA sequence within the bacterial system where CRISPR was initially discovered. The DNA sequence repeats itself over and over again with unique sequences in-between the repeating palindromic ones. Cas9 is a protein which acts like molecular scissors, while a guiding piece of RNA (the other molecule essential to life) works as a small tag pointing Cas9 to which area in the DNA it should go and then where it should make very precise cuts. One way to think about CRISPR is as a text editor where you could search the given text of your genome, find the place where you want to edit it and make a change.

The technology has developed rapidly since the 2010s, although it initially ran into heavy resistance. Around forty countries, including China, discouraged or banned the editing tool to genetically engineer germline cells — cells whose change in the genome will be passed onto the progeny.

After publishing the first study on human embryos in 2015, where scientists attempted to modify a gene responsible for B-thalassaemia, a fatal blood disorder, China took the lead from the US in genome editing of embryos.

Whereas in the US, the federal funding of germline gene editing research was prohibited, the B-thalassaemia study was funded by the Chinese government. Within the next decade, technical challenges on the road to designer babies were overcome. One of the biggest challenges was preventing CRISPR going rogue and acting on unintended sites within the genome. This could lead to unwanted mutations such as inadvertently activating a cancer-causing gene or allowing pieces of chromosome to come together in a genomic rearrangement called a translocation, one of the causes of diseases like chronic myeloid leukemia. But by 2025 CRISPR system evolved up to the point where such off-targeting was strictly controllable.

The same year, 2025, China established its Human Fertilization Agency and lifted the ban on embryo genome editing, paving the way to commercializing the science behind it. The role of the Human Fertilization agency was to issue licenses to private and governmental organizations to use embryo genome editing for commercial and research purposes.

This move prompted huge criticism from some quarters, summoning an unusual alliance between parts of the scientific and religious communities. Critics appealed to UNESCO’s Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rightsand the Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights, which declare the human genome part of the heritage of humanity. Others said it violated the altered children’s human rights.

In China, these arguments were brushed aside. “China supports human rights and is a leader in the fight to improve health around the world with use of genetic engineering. UNESCO declarations do not create a legally binding obligations for the countries which signed them,” was the only short statement given from the communications department of the Human Fertilization Agency. After this act, a number of private designer genomic clinics sprung up in China.

The first “designer baby” was born in 2030 in Tianjin: Adam, a boy with purple eyes and golden locks framing his heart-shaped face. Like the Bollinsworths’ future daughter, Adam also had the ability to sleep just a couple of hours a day and feel rested. The activation of this gene enhanced the productivity of the working population by 3 percent around 2070, when the generation after Adam’s began entering the workforce. In the 2030s, though, it initially just meant longer sleepless nights for Adam’s parents.

Adam and other designer babies were born with enhanced intellectual abilities and physical appearances, designed to be more attractive based on population wide polls. However, the superhuman life they were given to lead came at a price.

In the decades after Adam’s birth debates raged from questions of serving genetically enhanced people to the need for different grading systems adapted to designer children’s enhanced abilities. Private schools appeared, offering accelerated curriculum specially catering for designer children. Education specialists warned that designer children could face similar challenges as gifted learners. A 2006 study, reported that 67% of gifted individuals experienced some form of bullying by the age of 14 within the educational system and therefore could face higher rates of suicide and depression.

The rise of genetically-modified people also quickly provoked fear, particularly in the US.

On Time Magazine’s 2040 Person-of-the-Year cover, a 10 year-old Adam stared out under the headline, “U.S. or Them” — just a decade after he had appeared on it under a celebratory one. A month earlier, the U.S. had banned entrance to all genetically-modified people, except in cases where the modification was medical-related.

“We won’t let those monsters enter our country and procreate with our citizens!” Benjamin Jackson, the country’s controversial president, had told TV cameras, as he signed an executive order imposing the ban.

There had also been a fearful reaction in Europe, where France required special visas for GM-people entering. Countries enforced strict border controls where the special visa stamped in the passport contained a barcode with person’s stored genome sequence, allowing immigration officers to see what modifications had been made.

Just five years before that, in 2035 the world had celebrated a milestone together. Thirty two OECD countries had recorded zero new cases of cystic fibrosis. In more than two thirds of cases the difference between suffering the disease or not had proved to be just a single missing letter in a person’s genome.

This disease was just one of many genetic disorders that future generations in developed countries would know nothing about. Progress was still uneven though, while developed nations were making huge strides towards disease eradication, developing countries faced the same problems as in the past: poor medical access and unaffordable prices of genetic engineering. Similar to prices of insulin which soared in 2010s, the price of a genetic modification didn’t depend only on the price of technology. Although the technology was getting cheaper, prices often depended more on the politics around governments and the pharmaceutical companies providing the service. Genetic engineering of embryos came coupled with IVF treatments, which, according to the Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago, in their basic form without CRISPR came with a price tag of $15,000, making them unattainable for populations of developing countries.

But, while throughout the 2030s the world embraced editing embryo’s genomes as a way to eradicate heritable diseases, enhancing the genetic traits of your offspring remained intensely contested.

The EU and the US initially banned any kind of genetic manipulation which didn’t directly aid disease prevention and treatment. Asian and Latin American countries, however — led by Japan, China, Brazil and India — allowed the creation of designer babies under one condition: a designed life couldn’t create life, all people created this way were compulsorily born sterile.

Unsurprisingly, the technology was quickly identified as a potential means of population control, particularly in countries where policies meant to target overcrowding were already in place. The same year Adam was born, China, released a planning document estimating a 1:1 ratio of designer vs. normal newborns would lead to a decrease in the population numbers. India projected that by 2080 a quarter of its births would be designer babies, conducted under a public births program. As the GM-people matured, adoptions also surged.

After half a year in China and two IVF treatments, Amy and John Bollinsworth returned to London expecting a child. Not everyone was pleased by their decision — some friends refused to hold baby Jemima. Many things though were the same for them as any other family — there were still waiting lists for childcare, and the scrambling later to get her into the right school catchment area. Even in a world of genetically-designed life some things didn’t change.
